Solve : Laptop to Internet?

Answer»

I have a windows 2000 Vaio Laptop
I was WONDERING if it could connect wireless to my house connection
Check Device Manager, if any Network Adapters are listed. Since it's Win 2000 = PRETTY old laptop = I DOUBT, it has any built-in network adapters.
If you won't find any, you'll have to use plug-in network card, assuming the laptop has PCMCIA port.To follow up on what Broni said, if your laptop has a PCMCIA Card slot (old laptops USUALLY do), you will need something LIKE this:
http://images.google.com.hk/images?hl=en&q=wireless%20pcmcia%20card&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wii have a 10/100 PC card

Model No.: PCMPC100

Etherfast (Linksys)

is that what i need?Just plug it in, and give it a shot. You'll need a driver, though.

Solve : start menu, tool bar, and icons keep disappearing and reappearing???

Answer»

Hi all, i just started up my computer after being away for the weekend and now i can use programs and the internet, but my start menu, tool bar and icons constantly disappear then reappear like my system is just starting up....any ideas on whats wrong and how i can fix this

thanx gregStart with a full system scan for virus and then run spybot for malware.

Be sure to clear temp files and cookies in IE and or firefox browsers before the scans.

If you need recommendations for antivirus please try Avast or AVG, all of them including Spybot are free. How about let's find out what ver. of Windows what machine and what happened prior to this etc ? ?windows xp and i was on msn messenger and using a webcam, msn messenger froze i restarted the computer and this is where i am atMachine specs i think i included in my question....

But to save time you can check/do the usual housekeeping.
Disk cleanup
Defrag

Then
List hard drive capacity and free space...
RAM
CPUthe problem is i cant KEEP the window open long enough, bc every time the icons go away the start menu goes away including the folders that are open ill try to get the info u asked for i have a toshiba would safe mode help me in getting it to work a little better
So it's a laptop ? ?

Now we're making progress...yeah its a laptop, im sorry im not great with computers, i know that if i reformat my comp it will TAKE CARE of the problem, but i wanna get my photos and such off of here, but everything closes on me before i can get there....i ran the checks and put norton 360 on here still no better

would safe mode help me in getting it to work a little better
only one way to find out.how do i get into safe mode, im not sure, i was told hit F8, that didnt work and i tried to find it on the F2 and F12 menu and still cant FIGURE it outF8 needs to be tapped repeatedly when powering up and before you see the Windows screen...
Let us know how it runs in safe mode but it's not a cure all for what your issue may be.going into safe mode did nothing, do you think someone who knows what they are doing would be able to atleast salvage pics, documents, and a few other items off of here before i were to reformat my comp, bc i was told reformating it would fix this for sureIf you are going to format and do a clean install then get one of these :

2.5" Laptop to IDE adapter...

This will enable you to hook up the laptop HDD to a working desktop machine and retrieve/burn your data.

Solve : XP timeout on install?

Answer»

I would try a totally different optical drive than the ones you have...providing the CD is in good shape.if you can, try installing the OS on the HD using a completely different computer. remove the all the hard drives from the different computer first to avoid accidently formatting a good hard drive. This will rule out the motherboard.I can then move the HDD back to the old computer and it should boot up fine?Quote from: viperx45 on December 19, 2008, 09:47:03 PM

So if I completely install the OS on another mobo/system and then reinstall into the original system it should boot correctly? Or are you saying I should do the install just to see if it works, but I will have to wipe/reinstall the OS when I reinstall the HDD into the original system?

Background: Computer was given to me working (but before I got it). Owner complained of a no boot situation after a night of power surges at home which cause inumerable reboots.

The owner had a suppressed Blue Screen of Death...most likely zapped something.

Quote
Owner REMOVED primary hd (with OS) and sold it, gave me the rest. Took it to a computer shop to reassemble and get it ready for me to install new OS. They reset BIOS to default and gave it back.

...they didn't even test it further? Why am I not surprised?

Quote
Problem: Computer boots from cd and loads the preliminary files to the RAM for starting setup, once I click ENTER to install XP (from the screen that allows user to decide on what type of installation) it then says please wait... on the bottom and times out.

The "Please wait" part is the time where the text mode installer searches for previous installations of Windows and checks all accessible drives. At that point, it could be:

1) Bad hard drive.
2) Bad FLOPPY drive (if ONE is present).
3) Bad floppy disk if there is one inside the drive.
4) Bad CD-ROM drive.
5) Bad installation disc.
6) Bad IDE controller on motherboard
7) Bad motherboard...

Quote
Attempted solutions: Removed HD and installed as slave in good computer (using cable select), ran scandisk, reformatted, and stored a few things on the HD to make sure it accepts them and opens them. Everything seems ok.

Doing this would eliminate #4 and/or #5. Try that next. Will do, going to try to find someone who will loan me one and I'll give it a whirl.
Thanks for everyone's help,
JesseTried a different optical drive and it made it all the way to the partition screen, I decided for 4 gb to partition and clicked begin partition and it went to the status screen and froze up with a black box and an L next to it (again, just a random symbol)...
JesseAt this point i would borrow a known good PSU of the same wattage or greater and swap it in there...
This may not be the issue but it will eliminate a suspect.

NOTE: If you are installing XP that partition size is a bit stingy i would say.

If this produces no joy-joy then i would test the RAM and the HDD in that order.
MemTest for the RAM

Definitely too small. You should go with about about 15 gigs to give you some breathing room, so to speak.

I aint being funny but that answer refers to windows 2000!

I have been having similar problems with my Dell Inspiron 6000 LAPTOP running Windows XP.

I have run a Dell diagnostics and am gradually GETTING to grips with it - if I find a good answer I will POST it.

Yep that's windows 2000; I have XP

Enter the Recovery Console by pressing 'r' when prompted.
Then from the command prompt run "chkdsk C: /r"

chkdsk /r on it there...

Solve : Help dell inspirion 530?

Answer»

Can anyone here help me? I have a dell inspirion 530 (the slender model) it won't start up . It BEEPS continuously when i turn it on and doesnt produce an image on the monitor at all. I have opened it up and checked the wires. I found one (an p4 wire) that wasnt connected at all and i cannot find where it goes. But that may not even be the problem. any ideas?Quote

(the slender model)

Mine went fat. I didn't make it WATCH enough MTV to become obsessed about its weight.
Are there two pairs of P4 wires? In that case your system only needs one. Modern boards MIGHT require two.

First try RESETTING the CMOS by REMOVING the BIOS battery.

If that doesn't work, remove all the hardware not required to turn the computer on and see if it'll boot.
(Only thing that should remain: CPU/heatsink, Motherboard, RAM, PSU)

Solve : Extending a small hard drive.?

Answer»

I have a PC here which only has a 3GB FAT32 hard-drive and that is nearly full of operating system (Windows 2000 Pro SP4) and PRODUCTIVITY software. The plan is this. I want to : -

1) Add a new physical disk and format it to NTFS,
2) Convert the current drive to NTFS.
3) Convert both disks to dynamic.
4) Convert them into one spanned volume.

Is this plan possible, or am I somewhere in cloud cuckoo land?

ThanksI'd get a bigger hard drive and an image program such as Norton Ghost to copy the OS from one disk to another.

If the 3GB disk breaks down (It must be -ancient-) and you do what you're planning on, you'll be in a world of hurt I agree with Raptor as well...and to be honest i find disk-spanning a waste of time and effort.
I just add storage as i need it.Cheers,

I was beginning to think that my plan was a little excessive. Personally, I'd rather chuck the PC and buy a new one. But, I don't call the shots around here.

I'll consider the ghosting idea.

Thanks again Also keep in mind that all drive manuf. have "cloning" tools FREE in their respective drive diagnostics software.Quote from: patio on December 22, 2008, 08:13:45 AM

Yes but what program and where in that program? I've never seen this in their diagnostic software. Do I need something else? In the 3 i mentioned it is under the SETUP New Drive options...I must be using outdated programs. I'll go have a look at it soon.

Does it work properly with NTFS? Yep.

P.S.
I just cracked open a brand new 500G Seagate SATA...5 Year Warranty and couldn't pass up the deal...$44.95 US.

Seems they are now using Acronis Disk Director and it's a freebie with the install CD !

Solve : Having problems with freezing/slow pc?

Answer»

I have been experiencing problems lately with my computer running very slow and an't seam to isolate the problem. As far as I can tell I think it is a virus of some sorts. My friend was on the internet on my computer and downloaded a few virus music files. I had a version of norton that caught them I think and quarentened them all. All was fine until a few reboots later when things started acting really bad. start up was very slow and it seams that even simple programs like windows media player and aim will cause my computer to screech to a halt. I would think it is some sort of memory virus as when i am just running mozilla everything is pretty much fine. it really only happens for about 15 seconds too. like it will freeze up for a couple seconds then go back and freeze again 15-30 seconds later. I have tried running virus scans and ad-aware in and out of safemode. The virus scans come back CLEAN and are themselves unbelievably slow. Normally my virus scan would take me 2 hours or so and now it takes like 15-16 hours both in and out of safemode. i even installed a new anti virus program hoping that it would help called avast, and it did a boot scan before windows was even loaded after installed and it TOOK 14 hours to get to 93% before it froze up. (it said the scan was done, reported 0 viruses and was booting).

If you have any idea what this could be let me know.
I have been looking through hijack this and i don't see anything in there problematic or anything but here is my log anyways

I do not have any problems with it, however I was wondering if there were any programs to download to increase the performance, protect it better, and keep it running smoothly.
Any advice? Thanks.CCleaner is GOOD maintenance tool to use on a regular basis. Visit HTTP://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds and download the Slim version. It's the same as the Standard Build, minus the language pack and a Yahoo toolbar.

I suggest you use both the Windows scan and the Registry scan features of CCleaner. When using the registry scanner, you will be prompted to backup the registry before fixing the items found. Do backup the registry when prompted.Ok, I did that. Thanks.
Any other suggestions?YES, search the forum for recommended programs and Windows tweaks.

Or just search Google for "Windows tweaks"Look at your hardware first, if your RAM is 1Gig or more, that should be no problem. You can use any windows optimized softwares. I have good experience with CCleaner, TUNE up utility, and Regcure.

Solve : Superfluous Administrator?

Answer»

I set up SEVERAL accounts on a machine running Windows XP Professional recently obtained by my family: 2 limited accounts and 3 administrator account. From what I've gathered, the "Administrator" account (as in the preexisting account named "Administrator") should become hidden and remain so under normal circumstances after the creation of another account with administrative privileges.

This has not happened, and, to make matters worse, when the computer is turned on, "Administrator" is logged on automatically: no prompt for password or any other comfortable sign of security is shown.

This doesn't make for the most secure of situations. Any help in rectifying said situation would be greatly appreciated.Bump! I wonder how many PEOPLE actually look at the second page of posts to offer help? I'm willing to bet that not many people do.

There sure are a lot of queries pertaining to MS Windows. Would it kill the os designers to make something more user-friendly?I am not sure I understand your problem. Is it that the machine logs into the admin account without any user action? Or can you not use the other accounts?

All right -- one account should remain Administrator. Decide which account that should be.

Go into the computer under the Admin account you wish to keep.

Please go to Start > Control Panel, and click the User Accounts icon. If you click the option to Change An Account, you'll get a window headed Pick An Account to Change, and all the accounts should be listed, with their current statuses. (You'll see whether accounts are Admin, Limited, and whether they require a password.)

Clicking on an account allows you to change its status from Admin to Limited, and to set a password for the account. Set a password for the Admin account you wish to keep -- something you'll remember, but not easy for someone to guess.

I hope this helps. That's not so much the problem as that there is an account, pre-installed on the machine, that is named "Administrator," which I can't seem to change the name of, change the status of, or delete.

The way I understand the workings of this account, it should not show up under normal circumstances on the welcome screen if there is another account with administrative privileges.

However, not only is "Administrator" visible, but it is also automatically logged in upon startup, bypassing the password assigned to the account and posing a significant security risk. Why'd you quote Stalin? What have you been up to since June ? ?

Check Here
And HereI quote Stalin because the day before I stumbled across that quote, I made the same comment myself.

Since June, I've had no life and have been horrendously busy.

Thanks for those two links, their information should be very helpful. I copied the text from the two sites onto my flash DRIVE, so I'll be able to use it the next time I'm working at that machine. Enjoy the Holidays ! !
Good to see you again.

Solve : reinstall xp -no driversfor hardware?

Answer»

Hi there, I am helping my DAD over the phone (lives in another state) with compaq laptop he bought for $100. System not too bad- got a trojan- we did a wipe and reinstalled xp - no sign of trojan but now syst says drivers not installed for the basic hardware...like modem, usb, video controller etc. But we have no history on this COMPUTER so how do I get the drivers? Can't get it on the internet because modem driver not installed, so can't do a search in device manager.

Any help appreciated!!DLoad; install and run Everest Home...
It will tell you FAR more than you need to know about what's in that machine...
I'd start with the chipset drivers...HP will give you all the driver you need... just be careful of what you download.
another idea is to have an screenshot of your device manager so you have the reference of what you need to install.Quote

Everyone wants to use some "special" software to do the simple fundamental things...I don't get it...CRAPWARE BE GONE...been doing it for 41 years and the simple fundamental solutions are usually more correct..., goto the source get the info...done...IMO

Because Patio didn't notice it was a HP so he recommended the best next step?
And since when is Everest crapware? It's a well renowned diagnostic and benchmarking program.

Wouldn't want to argue someone who's been visiting the HP website for over 41 years, though. LOL
People just have no respect for the elderly anymore...

I could go on and on but here's one more; in case someone's NOT dealing with a HP laptop, it will come in handy to know that they do not need the manufacturers web page per se to get drivers.

It's time for you walk through the park now, paps.
fgdn17, as somebody who has got more posts under his belt than you have on here, can I offer you a couple of bits of advice?

Can the attitude. Your last post is borderline.

Don't get in pointless arguments with dumb kids about who is right and who is wrong. Especially that p***k Raptor. The program was suggested because it works on all machines....who knows maybe the next one he NEEDS the info from will NOT be an HP....

get the model of his computer, goto HP site and put in model ie. compaq 2783 or whatever it is, goto download drivers, download them to your machine, burn a CD, send to your dad, have him install them and start from there...

Good Luck

Thanks fgdn17 - I didn't even think of that! I will try this first and let you know how it goes. I think me sending him a cd is the best option- cuz he has no clue about computers, he just uses it to play on the internet. Thanks so MUCH!

Solve : File association of GIF file in Outlook Express?

Answer»

Hello,

When I click on a GIF-attachment to OPEN in Outlook Express, the following error message OCCURS:
"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel. "

I did actually find the Folder OPTION in the control panel and associated GIF to the Paintbrush program, but I still get the same error message. Strangely, when I COPY the attachments and paste them locally on the desktop, I can open them without any problem. (It was also working like that previously aswell)

Does it nead an expert tweak in the registry to get this fixed, or is it an Outlook Express problem?

Thanks, BurtonTry right clicking a .gif image and select Open With and check "ALWAYS use this app to open this filetype "

Solve : lolcat Screen Freeze?

Answer»

For the past week, whenever I've gone to lolcats, after viewing any two categories, my computer freezes. I can move the mouse, but nothing really responds. The screen stops in mid-load, viewing the Task Manager just causes it to freeze on the screen. I can't "end task". I have to do Ctrl-Alt-Del and end internet connection. I finally read what was included in the "UNRESPONSIVE PROGRAM" report. Here's a COPY. Can anybody tell me what's going on and how to fix it?

Not the reply I was hoping for, but here's the link to lolcats:

By the way, it doesn't usually cause freezing of the screen or anything, so don't worry about going there!Does it happen in MSN Explorer?

Did you try 'last known best configuration' instead of safe mode?i went to last good configuration and nothin //it just started doing it without no knowledge as to whyDo you have virus protection? YES THE COMPUTER HAD VIRUS'S FROM MY SON BUT I INSTALLED A NEW COPY OF XP AND IT STILL DOES ITOk, if you can't be bothered being coherent and minding your style of writing this is all the advise you'll get out of me;

1. Set CD-ROM PLAYER to first boot DEVICE
2. Boot from Windows XP CD
3. Reformat partition C: as NTFS.

sry for the caps im at work we have type with that but i already did reconfig and still nothinIf you reformat the drive and install Windows XP, it should boot normally.

If it doesn't, you're doing something wrong. Why don't you explain to me how you've reinstalled Windows XP, step by step? put in cd hit f8 deleted the partion install fresh copyQuote from: whisper1sbs on December 22, 2008, 02:45:44 PM

put in cd hit f8 deleted the partion install fresh copy

And you choose to format the partition, right?

With the limited and brief information you're giving me, I'm guessing it has some kind of driver issue. Try disabling and removing all hardware that could be CONSIDERED unnecessary (IE: Network card) and see if Windows will boot normally.

If it does, enable it one by one to see which device makes Windows crash. I have installed many times window xp to were i became a pro at it but cant figure out why i can only get on with safe mode with networkingQuote from: whisper1sbs on December 22, 2008, 03:02:03 PM

Solve : sound cutting out?

Answer»

Hi, I'm a newbie, I have a HP Media Center Pc with XP. Whenever I try to play a video on line, I get about 10 seconds of clear sound, and then the voices start breaking up. I've tried everything I can see to do, but it STILL does it. My speakers work fine for everything but with the videos. Anyone have any ideas what could be causing the problem? Plain language please.Any or all video formats? Only online streaming material?

All I can wonder for now is whether your flash PLAYER plug in is current - assuming most vids you'll be viewing will be FLV - YouTube etc.

It would be interesting as a comparison if you could save a vid file of the troublesome format and play it locally - there are TWO or three free FLV players available and quite a few ways to get a save of an FLV.Duh...I don't have any of my own videos on the computer, wouldn't even know how to do it. Just occasionally like to view one online. U tube doesn't work for me, or any others I've tried. I get the picture, but the sound cuts in and out, after about ten sec. Don't understand why if I can get it, why it doesn't stay in all the time and not cut in and out? I don't know what a FLV player is. How do I get one installed? Thanks for bothering to help me, I'm not a computer guru.Well - I was thinking this way as a means to test whether your problem was the streaming video when on line compared with playing direct within your computer.

To ACHIEVE a save/download of the content in YouTube etc ..... do a Google search for something like "saving video from youtube" - and you should find a number of options that will mostly be free and also mostly fairly easy to use.

Likewise a search should easily find an "FLV player" - it is a dedicated player only for these FLV files, which Win Media Player does not yet handle. There are I think now three versions around, if not more and they are free.

If tho this is more than you want to try - let's see if anyone else can chime in with some ideas that MIGHT help.

Solve : No Format Options, XP Pro?

Answer»

I Booted from XP Pro CD to Format & did this.
Read the Microsoft Software License Terms, and then press F8.
Follow the instructions on the screen to select and format a partition where you want to install Windows XP.
The only options I see are Press R for Repair or ESC for a FRESH Install. I’ve tried both & neither give me the Format option.
Also the Format option is grayed out in Disk Management.

The reason I’m doing a Format is because I get a runtime error when trying to open a sub folder.
I did a Sys Restore, last known good configuration, a chkdsk /F & R, Virus scan & ran RegCure that is SUPPOSE to fix runtime errors but that didn’t work.
Is there any other way I can do a Format?
Boot to the CD, accept the license agreement and CHOOSE to install a fresh copy of windows. Now follow this order:
1. Delete partitions (all of them)
2. Create a partition
3. Format your partition (to set up windows on the selected item press enter)If you know how to write a bootable CD from an ISO.

ImageBurn and the Windows 98SE ISO is included in the below link.

I get no option to delete partitions & when this trouble started it also disabled my Laptop key pad & I can’t get that back because Control Panel, Printers & other Hardware, MOUSE where I could enable my key pad gives me the runtime error. What kind of laptop do you have?

You might need special drivers that are loaded during Windows setup initialization (Press F6 when it asks you to).

These can be obtained from the motherboard (or laptop) manufacturer's webpage. Quote from: JJ 3000 on December 21, 2008, 11:39:51 PM

BTW, this is the Laptop that I gave to my girlfriend.
I went to ADD/Remove programs & removed some Game programs then had to do a Restart then lost the ADD/Remove programs option but now when booting from the XP CD I get the option to Delete partitions.
I installed StartupMonitor & told her to always click NO unless it was something like Zone Alarm or Sygate. Removing those Nasty Games in Program Files did the trick & all seems well so far.
Thanks for your help, I must have spent 10 hours with this problem & the fix seems to be removing those Nasty Games in Program Files.

All is ok now accept the WLC not connecting but I’m burnt out & will check that out tomorrow. And thanks again.

What’s the deal with Vista when it says, we are checking for a solution to the problem then spins its wheels for a min or 2 then eventually says, we will close the program? At first I thought neat then after about 50 of these finding nothing on my new Vista bought 11-21-08 it’s really become a pain in the *censored* pop up.Microsoft has been trying to automate stuff that is best done manually for a long time. WLC, Wireless LAN Connection like with a Router, I just bought one & it can run lots of PC's over one DSL or Cable.I'd just refer to them as WLAN routers to prevent any confusion.

Did you try simply rebuilding your network and security? Reset everything to default and start from the ground up. You might need to connect to your router using a cable as not all of them are accessible by default with a wireless connection. Quote from: Raptor on December 22, 2008, 07:17:48 AM

That’s a thought. My original install went easy but now it doesn’t recognize my key num for the 2nd PC. I’ll tell you it’s not easy in this computer world. I can build a house easier than getting around in my computer!!!
Do it quick & dirty like you said & you didn’t know what a WLC was? Yea right!! Keep up the good tips & SHARE them with us beginners.

Solve : Memory stick keeps closing?

Answer»

Ok, here's a weird one. My 512mb memore stick keeps closing. I formatted it and Download some other stuff from my psp on it. Open the vid folder again and bam, does it again. Now my 1gb memory card has no problem and when I open up my vid folder, it doesn't happen. ALSO it said on the error report something about "memory card could not be "read". Also I did a cc cleaner and downloaded the virus scanner they have you download, FOUND nothing. Last thing, if qasf.dll helps, it had that on the error report. Any help is appreciated.

edit: vids on my pc are completely fine and nothing SEEMS wrong or anything.

edit2: heading to bed, if anyone has a solution or any idea on how to fix it I'll reply in the morning. Thank you in advance Does the stick work in other computers?sorry for taking so long to reply, don't know, can't test it sadlyNo one you know has a computer ? ?Sounds like the memory stick is FAILING. That does happen, more often than many PEOPLE realise. They are not suitable as a backup medium for example. Until you can test it in another computer, the assumption must be that the memory stick is broken. Even if it "works" in another computer, if it does not work in yours, it is effectively broken for you. It is unreliable. It has given you a clear sign that it is time to discard it.

Solve : IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL error, please help!?

Answer»

I built a new computer this last week and I booted up and installed WXP service pack 3, I don't have all the updates yet, but I'm getting there. I have the most current updates for my NVIDIA drivers and my bios. I have internet working, currently using it, but I have been having blue screen crashing problems with the error: IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. The BSOD usually occurs when I am heavily using the internet, such as watching Youtube or using Utorrent. A couple TIMES the computer just froze. The "trigger" seems to be either the internet or my USB connections. I have a lot of things plugged into the USB: keyboard, mouse, printer, external drive, and my wireless internet adapter is ALSO USB. Sometimes after this error occurs I fail POST and my computer turns on but doesn't boot. Usually just turning it off for awhile fixes this. I have opened up my computer and checked all the connections and reseated my RAM. Here is a list of the parts that are in my computer:

Also, attached is a picture of my IRQ list from system information. Please help me fix this problem, I think I just need to reassign some of the IRQs but I don't know how to do that or which ones should be moved. I have looked up this error on many other forums and sites but the solutions presented were usually very general or HELPFUL only to those posters. This is my first post on a forum for this problem asking for help. Thank you for your time.

[attachment deleted by admin]Please help me, I am really stuck and this is a brand new computer that cost me a lot to build. The blue screen happened again when my wife was using the internet: she had two pages open at the same time, one was the final screen of an ONLINE purchase that was done loading and the other was the myspace homepage that blue screened in the middle of loading. I took a picture of the blue screen with my digital camera and it is attached to this post. The computer works fine other than this stupid error, I installed Bioshock and have played more than six consecutive hours of it on the highest graphics settings and there were never any errors while playing. Other than Bioshock I haven't installed any other programs for fear of messing up this bug worse. There are programs that came with my hardware setup disks that I have installed, let me know if you need to know what these are. Thanks to anyone who helps me.

[attachment deleted by admin]From what I've been able to find, the wind502u.sys file is related to a Motorola WU830G wireless receiver, which I don't see listed in your hardware. It's also used with some ASUS wireless cards as well.

Any of this ring any bells?Sorry, yeah my USB wireless internet adapter is Motorola, and very old. Should I reinstall the software? Or do you recommend that I just get a new Adapter? Sorry for not mentioning it before, please let me know what you think I should do and thank you for responding!Download an updated driver for Motorola's website.

How do you find (don't know the names) and delete unwanted files. Want to install a program but it can't. (Older version of program found). Uninstalled that one but some files remain. Win XPDid you use Add/Remove Programs to delete that program?
What program is it?

At your desktop press F3. That will open up the search companion. Type in the name of the program and search for files with that name. Delete them.

You might TRY this program to get RID of all of the JUNK on your computer
http://www.ccleaner.com/Go to the support site of the manufacturer ( creator ) of the program. The problem usually has occurred before and they will have an uninstall program.

Sometimes we can REINSTALL the rogue program and then the OS add/remove program will work. Or there will be an uninstall under the start menu.

Run all of your cleanup programs. Start, all programs, accessories, system tools and then click Disk Cleanup.

A rogue entry in the registry might be the block. Use the free MICROSOFT registry cleaner:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/cleanup.htm

Search for a key phrase in all files for the associated rogue program files and then delete. ( be careful not to delete good files. )

Search for *.tmp and then delete.

Search for *.log and decide which ones to delete.

Make sure 15 to 20% if your HD is free

Solve : Explorer.exe Crash?!?!?

Answer»

Hello everyone, I'm trying to help my sister out with her laptop. The laptop is about a 5 YEAR old COMPAQ Laptop (not a business laptop), which has Microsoft XP Home Edition.

Her problem is that whenever you boot up the computer, you are able to see the desktop, but then explorer.exe crashes. I've tried to add a new task by typing in explorer.exe, which will show the desktop temporarily, then 5 seconds later it crashes again. I've even tried this same thing in safe mode, and have no idea how to do anything with the windows keep crashing. I'm thinking it's got to be a virus, spyware/malware, or a trojan, because when I open up the task manager, there are a bunch of things listed that do not seem reliable, but because the windows keep closing after 5 seconds, its impossible to do anything! I asked her if she had any important things on her hard-drive and she said some pictures. So if there's anyway around a re-installation of Windows, that would be best.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!!!

This will load basic drivers and bring you to a black command prompt screen.

It will then ask you for a volume name press Enter for none.

I think I have the answer.
The computer does not have any of the set up necessary to input the win 2000.I think the new dis might be wrong.
I have got 4 floppy disc to input setup. However when all has loaded i have to remove the floppy drive and put in the cd drive.Of course the laptop does not find the cd.
I start in bios f12 use removable device.
Can you get these boot discs on cd?Quote from: parkinson40 on December 21, 2008, 01:18:52 PM

I have no idea what the above means other than to prove you do not have an official Win2K installation CD or you WOULD have been done by now...
Win2K CD's are bootable.
The WinME bootdisk would have worked...why did you switch to the Win2K bootdisk ? ?
Depending on how many drives you have you would have to after formatting locate the CD drive letter...WinME makes it R i believe but you could try typing each alphabet letter unless you can SEE the message during setup which states what drive letter the CDROM is assigned.
The syntax is for EXAMPLE :
At the A: prompt type D: and hit Enter...
At the D: prompt type in dir /p and hit Enter ...this will tell you the contents of the drive you are checking...if it shows directory empty then you haven't located the CDROM drive...
CONTINUE the process til you find the Win2k contents on the CD...
Once you find it : Example R: shows Win2K and a WinNT folder etc. then at the prompt type setup and hit Enter.
Once again the install should start.
Good Luck.

Solve : Computers not responding??

Answer»

Alright so I'm running Windows XP and everything was fine except suddenly it just stopped responding. Yea it just sounds like it froze but it's a little more complicated. When I start up my computer everything RUNS smoothly but the moment I try to access the Start Menu, any of my programs or even click the mouse everything just freezes COMPLETELY. The computer still works in Safe Mode and I did run some scans in Safe Mode but no viruses were found. Does anyone know what's wrong? In safe mode choose Boot with the last known good configuration.

Or

Run System restore to an earlier date

or
Run SFC /scannow

or
shut down and unplug from wall and wait 30 seconds. Plug back in and reboot. ( will reset factory defaults )Well I know that rebooting with the last known good configuration doesn't work, I've TRIED it already. Could you explain how to do the other two? Sorry but I'm just not that great with the technical side of computersWell, I tried unplugging it but that didn't workStart/Run sfc /scannow and hit Enter...
Note the space between sfc and the switch...
Have your XP CD handy.THANKS patio but did the System Restore and now everything seems to be working fine. Thanks for the assistance. Have you installed something before these happened?

Solve : Registry error when uninstalling Symantec Client Security?

Answer»

Back home my BROTHER tried to uninstall Symantec Client Security from a desktop running XP, but was unable to find an easy way to do so. He followed a set of instructions online that had him make changes to the registry. Unfortunately, one of these changes messed something up, and now every time I right-click on an icon in a folder/desktop, an installation wizard for Symantec comes up. The right-click menu will not show up until I cancel the installation.

I've tried letting the installation continue, but it only freezes the task bar. I've also tried downloading Symantec Client Security and installing it again, but the wizard QUITS saying there was an error that did not allow it to finish and gives me no more information as the nature of the problem. Worst of all, this happened a couple of MONTHS ago, and my brother says he doesn't remember what instructions he followed online, so I don't even know what registry entries he changed .

If anyone could let me know how I can stop the INSTALLER from booting every time I right click on an icon, I would be very grateful. I know this might be a tall order since I know little else about what caused the problem other than a faulty change in the registry. Any help is appreciated.find your version here:(using system information may help here)

Solve : Large number of directories - access time (NTFS)?

Answer»

From an archiving operation I have to handle a directory that contains about 80.000 sub-directories (and INCREASING).
The number cannot be reduced or distributed over a larger number of sub-directories.
Consequently, working in the directory is VERY slow, as it re-reads the directory structure after every action.

Is there any way to speed up access to such a directory (e.g. when accessing with "Explorer" or programs such as "Total Commander") or at least optimize PERFORMANCE ?Not sure I can give you a good answer, but might be worth asking whether your hard drive has recently been defragmented. Has it?

Your OS? How much free space (MBytes and percentage) on your hard drive? Also Total Commander hates indexing service and any Symantec products...
Turn off the indexing service and if you have any Symantec products think about replacing them with (FREE ) alternative protection apps...
There's a ton of info for this in our Virus and Spyware Forum.soybean:
The HDD is brand new, the archiving was the first operation done with it.
It's a 500GB USB HDD, the current utilization is about 30GB.
Each archived file folder (out of the 80.000) contains one or more PDF or DOC FILES with about 375kB in average.

The indexing is switched on at the moment, because of the promised "faster search" results.
Can the indexing be switched of just like that or will it affect the data on the HDD ?
(e.g. re-format or such)

I use the USB HDD with several PCs and Laptops running AV programs, e.g. AVIRA on the PC, but "OfficeScan" on the Laptop.
They are all slow when accessing the archive folder containing the 80.000 sub-directories, so I assume it's not a problem of the AV program.

OS is WinXP Home on PC and WinXP Prof. on Laptop.

When you SWITCH off the indexing service be prepared to wait about the same amount of time as defrag or diskcheck takes...

No guarantees here on it speeding things up but in my experience running Total Commander it liked it off.

Your mileage may vary...so I have switched off the "Indexing Service" on the USB HDD,
et voila, what used to be 1.5 to 2 minutes waiting time until the directory was read,
is now reduced to about 9 seconds.
*censored* of an improvement !

Thanks to you guys, I am one happy user now.
Merry Christmas.

BTW: The time needed to work on the HDD/directories/files to change from "Indexing" to "No index" took about 5 minutes.Excellent !

Enjoy the Holidays yourself as well and stop by anytime ! !

Solve : Steam Damage??

Answer»

I was using my laptop to listen to itunes when I was taking a shower, like I normally do. However, this time, the computer started skipping the song, not literally skipping a song and moving on to the next one, but fracturing it, like a broken CD that was scratched. I took it out of the room and shut it down, and when I RESTARTED it the computer was operating way slower than normal. When I LOOKED at the task manager the CPU has been spastically using up to 55 percent of the processor speed when I was on my desktop with no applications running, leading me to believe that the computer's speakers aren't damaged. Does anyone know what's going on and why? The computer has an Intel 2 Core duo processor and is running windows XP.

Thanks for any help,

haha no I'm not that stupid

I did turn it off and leave it in a dry place for 8 hours, that was my initial reaction. However, that has not helped. It's probably simply a coincidence that it happened at that time; I recommend starting a post in the viruses and malware forum, discussing the symptoms; sounds to me like something is hogging an entire core. hmm put it in rice? i herd that putting water damaged electronics in rice helpsQuote from: computeruler on December 13, 2008, 07:18:09 PM
hmm put it in rice? i herd that putting water damaged electronics in rice helps

It doesn't sound like it's water damaged.I agree. It sounds like another process is running in the background that is eating up all the processing power.
This doesn't necessarily mean it was damaged by water.I put out a topic in the virus section, but I followed all of the anti-virus steps and haven't found any malware. They haven't responded to my logs yet so I haven't given up hope, but I'm beginning to wonder if it isn't virus related. Is there anything else it could be? This is just a food for thought question at this point because I still haven't gotten any input from the virus people.

Thanks for any IDEAS,
RobThe Malware Removal Specialists are a bit bogged down right now due to overwhelming demand...i'd be patient and see what they find.Oh yeah I understand entirely. I'm willing to wait, but this is the first virus that has ever slipped past Norton and TeaTimer for me, so I'm just worried the hardware might be damaged and it isn't a virus. Don't take that post as me dissing the moderators. No offense was meant. No offense taken...since it's a laptop you may WANT to consider ditching Norton for another FREE alternative which will free up some resources.
Good Luck.I have had Norton on this computer for ages though, it only started that fateful day while listening to iTunes. Could Norton suddenly go ballistic like that?No not neccessarily...
But you and the machine will run better

Solve : Forced update XP?

Answer»

Anyone know from the top of their head how to disable the forced restarting of Windows XP after an update?

LinkI'd rather not use a tool for knowledge-gathering reasons.

Start - run - gpedit.msc - computer configuration - administrative templates - windows update.
Check those settings, several of them will do what you want. Thanks Calum, that's pretty good of you.

You're welcome.
I ran into the solution a while back, purely by accident when I was looking for something else.
I never have automatic updates on on my own MACHINES, but it's HANDY to know how to disable the automatic reboot for other people.I always wait with installing new updates until the computer forces me or I hold a 'maintenance' DAY. That way I'm sure I won't get any updates that haven't thoroughly tested yet.

The quick way to disable the reboot for the current session is to stop the Windows Update service from running, by executing this command:
net stop "windows update"
It works on Vista, I didn't check it on XP.Quote from: Broni on December 19, 2008, 01:52:04 PM

Solve : Computer periodically reboots help!?

Answer»

I bought a HP desktop computer 2 months ago and it periodically reboots without input. I have screen saver set at 10 mins and even if in the screen saver MODE the computer will reset. HP has always looked for updates could that be my problem or do I NEED to MAKE a change to one of my setting. Other than an occassionally REBOOT the system works fine. Help.

Joe
Corrupt screen saver file ? ?
Is it an addon or a Windows screen saver ? ?
If Windows got to start/run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter...
Have your Windows CD handy as it may ask for it .
When finished re-boot.

If it's an addon screen saver delete it and re-install it.

Go to Control Panel /System /Advanced/ Startup and Recovery and uncheck " auto re-boot on system errors".....

Also review your settings in Control Panel/Power.

Other than that it's still under warranty so you have the option of returning it for satisfaction...

Solve : Avg Free won't leave me alone!?

I want to uninstall AVG Free.
Add/remove doesn't work. Get an error message; uninstall fails.
Revo isn't compatible with Windows ME.
AVG forums tell me my e-mail is already in use;use another address. (don't have one); won't let me sign in.
I've asked around & am TOLD to try to install newer version of AVG, then instead of installing, choose uninstall. Will it work? How long does the install process take--hopefully not a couple hours?

Help ! AVG is slowing up my pc terribly. Doesn't work with ME at all anymore.
Have you tried start>programs>avg>avg uninstaller?what version of AVG do you have?

http://oldversion.com/program.php?n=avg has older versions

I'd try just running the installer and then having the installer UNINSTALL the program. I know it's been suggested already .... it worked for my system, but my system is not the same as your system so I don't know if it'll work for you .... only test is to give it a shot. At worst, AVG won't be uninstalled but nothing ELSE should be AFFECTED.

I don't know if AVAST will support windows ME. But it does support windows 2000 and WINDOW ME seems to just be a "home" version of windows 2000 essentially. Might be worth a try

Last time I did somethiing like that, the AVG installer directly asked about uninstalling from system so just following instructions and it should be good. Otherwise there's something fishy that needs to be taken care of.

Solve : Purchasing a new Laptop -- What to get for under 500??

Answer»

Well "Purchasing" is a lie, I'm really looking for what I want for christmas, but still. First time I'm GETTING a "marginally large" Christmas in the last 13 years of my life... *censored* I'm not even Catholic... But I digress --

I've been researching around... I *Definately* want a Laptop computer... If you've read the last thread I started, you will know why. =D

But I'm not sure who to go with, and even then, what model.

HP makes good computers, but their all overpriced.

Everyone has a dell, but they suck.

You see my dilemma...

So this isn't having you LOOK for a computer for me, I want to know if you have a good laptop PC that you GOT for marginally cheap (500> ), isn't a complete waste of money, has a decent GPU (I don't want to be playing Crysis, but I don't want to be playing Dungeon's and Dragons, EITHER), AND IS STILL ON THE MARKET. I know you might have a good computer made a couple years back still going strong, but it doesn't HELP if I CAN'T BUY IT. Lol.

OH! Please GIVE computer model and maker

and if your computer is a crapbox, you can still help =D

Thanks in advance

Solve : XP Pro will not boot correctly, roll back and cannot boot into safe mode?

Answer»

Hi all,

To start, here are my system specs:

OS: XP Pro SP2
Motherboard: Asus SLI Deluxe
Processor: AMD Opteron 170 dual core
RAM: 1 gig (2 sticks) OCZ
Graphics: XFX Geforce 7800
Audio: Creative X-FI
HDD: SATA WD 200gig and an old IDE WD 120 (old install of XP HOME)
CD: Plextor DVD ROM, CD-RW

BSOD Message (just the codes):

STOP: 0x0000007E (0xC0000005, 0xF630D42A, 0xF79EE1A4, 0xF79EDEA0)

I've got what PROBABLY isn't too odd of an issue, but with some strange caveats. As the title states, the system will not boot regularly. I was able to boot into safe mode immediately after the first occurrence and CHECK a few things (including disabling the auto reboot so I could SEE the BSOD). After a few attempts at correcting the issue with roll backs via safe mode (Last Known option just repeated the error), the system will now no longer boot into even safe mode. This all started after an attempted display driver update.

One of the odd things about this situation is that the system required me to boot from the XP CD (I believe it was a conflict/issue with having the newer XP Pro SATA drive and the XP Home IDE in the same system, but I never got around to wiping everything out and starting fresh).

The second funky thing that comes up from all of that is when I try to do a XP Repair from a direct CD boot, I only have the D: drive (my cd drive) as a repairable option.

My options in and of themselves seem limited I am sure. I know I can just go for broke and do a complete re-install of the system, but will have to dig some irreplaceable stuff from the drive if that is the case (I am sure some guys at my IT dept at work will at least be willing to do that). I have not as of yet done anything in the BIOS, however. If disabling or adjusting anything in there may help, I am all ears. I believe Asus has Phoenix BIOS on the above listed mobo.

One thing I am curious to know, would it be feasible for me to install XP Pro on the old IDE drive (setting that to master somehow) and digging out all the files, etc I want to back up? I know I'm a bit all over the place with QUESTIONS, but definitely looking for any and all advice you may have.

Thanks!Start with HD diagnostic: System Memory: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287

Solve : My computer crashes every time unless I start in Safe Mode?

Answer»

This problem started when i attempted to install Daemon Tools, it requested that I restart the COMPUTER to install it. I did that and the computer seemed to start up just fine, however when it got to the point where it would normally have begun installing the screen goes blue and I get an error message:

"A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error sign restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

(it used to say something about making sure my software and hardware is properly installed, but it no longer says that for some reason.)

check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the Stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adaptors.

check with your hardware vendor for BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching and shadowing.

Technical Information:

***STOP: 0X0000008E (0X0000005, 0X0B6101FB, 0XAA9E1484, 0X00000000)

Beginning dump of physical memory
Physical memory dump complete"

I have plenty of space on my harddrives.
I have tried going into Safe MODE and making the computer start in the Diagnostic start up, but that simply made the computer crash immediately rather than after some drivers have loaded.
I've even deleted the installation file for Daemon Tools in the hope that it would prevent it from installing but it made absolutely no difference.
I would use system restore to reverse the changes, however for some reason system restore has been shut off and I cannot turn it back on in Safe mode and I simply do not get enough time to turn it back on in the normal mode.

There is nothing on this computer that I CARE to lose, so if there's a way to simply revert the entire computer to how it was on Day 1 I'll just do that.

Here's some my system specs in case they might help:

Microsoft XP
Professional
Version 2002
Service Pack 2

Benq Corporation
Intel(R) Pentium(R)M
Processor 1.73 GHz
1.73 GHz, 504 MV of RAMMS denotes this as most likely a driver issue...
Prior to Daemon was there any NEW hardware installed ? ?
If so check Device Manager for any Yellow !!'s and correct/re-install the offending drivers.

If this is not the case then the issue is with Daemon.
My non-technical understanding of how this tool works is it creates a virtual CD DRIVE using free HDD space so games etc. can be run directly from the HDD.
To do so it has to "fake out Windows" into thinking a device exists that really doesn't. This uses a "driver" to do so.

If you are sure you have fully removed Daemon check the following:
Right click My Computer...select Manage and then Disk Management.
Look for a drive that is not a physical drive or partition that you know you have .
Right clik the drive and select Unmount if that option is available.
If that is not one of the choices exit out and repeat the same thru plain old Windows Explorer.
Re-boot the machine.
Run chkdsk /r on that drive at the earliest possible convenience and also defrag.
Good Luck.I checked on the device manager, but i didn't find anything.

I also looked in Disk Management, but there were no extra partitions and only a single disk drive, i checked to see if there was an unmount option anyway, but there wasn't.
I think this may be because Daemon hasn't actually had the opportunity to be installed and therefore create a driver. The problem may be happening at start up when Daemon was scheduled to install.

I defragged both of my partitioned hard drives and also ran chkdsk just for the *censored* of it, and then restarted, but it still crashed.Quote

I also looked in Disk Management, but there were no extra partitions and only a single disk drive,

I defragged both of my partitioned hard drives

This sounds like a contradiction...please provide more info on your drive/partition setupmy total disk space is separated into two different hard disk drives, it's been like that since I got the computer originally.
There were no more than that when I looked at Disk management.and of course i have the one CD driveTry booting into safe mode and re-installing Daemon tools and then re-boot and see if you can un-install it properly...other than that i'm out of ideas other than a backup and clean install.

Solve : CD driver on the fritz?

Answer»

I have a Gateway PC, bought in 2002, with Windows XP. I've used the CD drive primarily to store our family photographs. A few weeks ago, when I placed a new CD in the drive tray, I didn't hear the normal sound of the thing revving up. The message on the screen told me to place a CD into the drive. I thought maybe the drive was defective and used a Gateway utility called PC Doctor. Following the directions I placed a full CD (again, family photos) into the tray and clicked on the diagnostic icon in PC Doctor. The drive whirred away and ran the following tests: linear seek, random seek, funnel seek, linear read, random read; all were successful. That made me think the drive was working, and maybe the software to run it was not recognizing something. I read a fair number of entries in this forum and tried some without success. I went to the Device Manager, opened "DVD/CD-ROM drives" and found this entry just below it: a yellow dot with an exclamation point in it followed by HL-DT-ST CD/RW GCE-8160B. I right clicked on this, then clicked on "Properties" and was greeted with the following message: "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing (Code 39)." I clicked on "Troubleshoot" and tried to uninstall then reinstall, but as I followed the directions I saw that it told me to insert the CD's that came with the computer. My sense of it was that inserting theCD's would produce the original screen direction to please insert a CD into the drive. I've been back to square one a good number of times now. I hope I've been specific enough in DESCRIBING the problem so that some of you MIGHT be able to SUGGEST a solution. Thanks.your solution would be to acquire a windows CD with which to install the necessary driver software.

Or- if your computer was a OEM machine, you might have a i386 directory/folder on your computer that you can direct the installer to instead.Optical drives don't need any extra drivers since Win 2000.

Try one of these:
1. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
or...
2. Download, and run Restore Missing CD Drive patch
Double click on downloaded file, and allow registry merge.
or...
3. Go to Device Manager, click a "+" sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
You'll see two items:
- ATA Channel0 (or Primary Channel)
- ATA Channel1 (or Secondary Channel)
Right click on each of them, and click Uninstal. Confirm.
Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled. Thanks for getting back to me. Broni, I tried the uninstall of the primary and secondary channels a few weeks ago as a result of reading what you advised someone else. It didn't solve the problem at that time. Thinking that I may have done the procedure improperly a few weeks ago, I tried it again this morning - no luck. Your first suggestion, sending me to Microsoft support was my next choice. Frankly, I'm lost with the directions given me there, and there's no indication of what their help will cost. I tried your second suggestion, i.e. download and run Restore Missing CD Drive Patch. I saved, to my documents folder, "cdgone.zip." There are three files: cdgone.reg, EditReg.reg, and Read Me.(I did "Read Me" but it didn't seem to tell me exactly how to proceed.) Going back to your directions, I looked for anything that told me to "allow registry merge," but could not see it. I'm trying to figure out what steps I've missed or what I'm just dumb about. I'm not even sure of what questions I should be asking you at this point. Should I have not "saved" but just "opened" cdgone.zip? At this point I'm thinking I need the kind of directions for a person who doesn't know what he's doing. Love that feeling of inadeqacy!Right clik cdgone.reg and select Merge...
Re-boot.As for M$ page, all you need to do is to perform 4 steps listed at the end of that page.
Print them out, and you'll see, they're easy to follow. Thanks Patio and Broni for your replies. I tried earlier today to right click cdgone.reg and all I found was the standard dropdown list of "open," "cut," "copy," "delete," "properties." "Merge" was not in the list. Still trying to figure what I did wrong with this. I printed that Microsoft page, but it's late and I'm weary, so I'll try what you suggest, Broni, tomorrow. Thanks again and I'll keep you posted. "M$" - that's a proper symbol, that is!The files may need to be extracted from the .zip.
You can view them but the merge option won't show up until you extract them to a folder...just pick a name and make a folder.
Try it this way and see....Greetings and salutations to Broni and Patio - Reading Patio's directions to extract the files from the zip file and then select "merge" worked like a charm. So, again, some raucous cheering for both of you: Broni for the "Restore Missing CD Drive Patch" suggestion, and Patio for clarifying the procedure for me. You both have been an enormous help. Thank you again, and I'll stop gushing now.
Excellent news...and Kudos go to Broni for providing the fix...i just nudged it along a little bit.
Stop by anytime !Here's the craziness now. My most recent CD with photos played normally; thus my cheering message to you. However, when I inserted any of the provious CD's that I made (all photos) I got this error message: "D:\ is not accessible. Incorrect function." With the latest CD, when I insert it, I hear all the familiar sounds of the CD going into drive, the autoplay flashlight scans, etc., and I can view all the photos. With any of my other CD's, after inserting them, I hear a little bit of whirring, the little light flashes a few times, then silence. Clicking on "My Computer," I see that the icon for the D drive has changed to show that a CD is in the tray, but then when I double click on that new icon, I get the error message. Any suggestions for this new wrinkle?I'm glad, we fixed a little
Do you have Easy CD Creator on your computer?
If yes, read here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;315350
If not...
Right click on the drive. Click Properties>Recording Tab
Make sure, there is a checkmark in "Enable CD Recording On This Drive" box.I'm beginning to think that if I EXPRESS my gratitude too much, I'll jinx the outcome! At first I tried right-clicking the drive>Properties>Recording Tab, but I found no recording tab. So then I went to the Microsoft site, downloaded the update, and can now open my other CD's. Everything seems to have returned to normal and I have you to thank for that; I'm glad you're out there. I do enjoy problem-solving but this one was getting me down. Thanks again.

Solve : Dos files?

Answer»

Recently switched to Win XP...when I CLICK on my Desktop shortcut for my Dos
data base program, I receive this message
Window Title: 16 Bit MS Dos Subsystem

C:\Docume~1\owner\desktop\adbm4.pif
Invalid startup directory, PLEASE check your pif. file
Choose "close" to terminate this application.

I am Computer illiterate and do not KNOW the Dos version.
The Properties lists the Program as ADBM4.exe
I'm running Win XP Service Pack 3 HP Pavilion 304w
Thanking you in advance!FIND the executable for the program ...it'll be a .exe extension in the program folder.
Right clik it and select Create shortcut.
Drag and drop it to the desktop and save.
Delete the old one.
Then right clik the new one and choose "run in compatibility mode".
It should work now.

NOTE: If the user profile has been changed from Quote

C:\Docume~1\owner\desktop\
then just start the whole process over after a re-boot.
Ideally this should be setup from the Admin account.Thank-you "Patio"So it worked then ? ?

Yess it did! ThanksStop by anytime...and Welcome to CH ! !
