Solve : Compac Armada Instilation help?

Answer»

Hi I posted before but the help I tried did not work. I am ready to scrap the info on this system and start all over by reinstalling windows 95 I have the instilation CD but I have no way to make this computer boot from CD. I tried a boot disk but if I type in the directory for the CD driver it says dirve has no volume.

What do I do next?

Thankyouhave you tried a boot floppy with CD support?

you have been in the BIOS and there is no option to boot from the CD drive?

As 'Dias de verano mentions',get the bootdisk----->Here

The file you download creates a floppy disk. You will need to make
that disk on a computer with a 3.5 floppy disk drive.

Double click on the file you download and it will say"Insert Floppy To Write'.I tried both the original and the version B;

but NOTHING seems to happend I also tried to use both of them to start up then switched to the Cdrive and tried to boot windows. This did not work either.

You need to run the setup prgram on the CDROM, so why are you switching to the C drive?
I think the cdrom is D:\ but when I switch there and try setup I get nothing if I try typing dir /p I get the message;

Volume in drive D has no label
Volume Serial Number is 205D-14E1
Directory of D:\

Flike not found

466,206,720 bytes free

I also tried drive R results in;

CDR101: Not ready reading drive R
Abort, Retry, Fail?

THankyou

+++++++++
In case this helps this is the message I get after the Version 1 boot disk loads (I thnk it is the same for V2);

Went ahead and tried if for about the 5th time seems to read the CD for the DIR but if I do setup it says CD101: Not redy reading drive R
Abort Retry Fail?

Okay this will not work with the V2 Disk because it seems not to even try to read the CD.

Iam going to keep trying until I can not stand it I will be back on here later tonight. Thanks for the help so far I will let you know what happens after I try this a few hundred times.Back to square one I tried it about 20 different ways before I tried sticking the CD in this computer it has micro scratches on the lable side so what looks like a good Win 95 CD is not....

HHHHmmmm ..... I am willing to go with LINUX or try anything. I guess I am open to any and all suggestions.

Thanks for all of your help in getting me this far.I found it!!!!!

C:\>Windows\System\Iosuwrong <<<<<<< WRONG !!!!

Should be C:\>Windows\System\Iosubsys

How can we change this file name? That is all I have to do and then it will work again!?

I am sorry but I am so excited I am going to post this in the Dos part too to see if I can get something tonight.

Thanks so much for all the help.

Solve : Limewire?

Answer»

Is it ok to ask a question about Limewire? If it is I would like to know if it's safe? As long, as your computer has all security tools installed, and up to date, it's safe.
IMPORTANT! Any file downloaded from P2P program has to scanned with your computer antivirus program. No exceptions! Thanks BroniSure thing i use limewire its cool
make sure you use your common sense and look at things like how big the file is. for example if you are DOWNLOADING a song, make sure its about 4 mb or something. a file that is like 100 kb is not a song, it's probably spyware or something whack like that. limewire is great i've been using it like it very much. Personally I've had nothing but trouble with Limewire and my daughter ended up getting all kinds of #^%$
in her computer as well. I know you should be careful and scan everything you download from file sharing
sites, but downloading ONE song at a time then wondering if it's what you really wanted seems like a pain.
I have been using Easynews.com for 3 years and have never had anything bad happen. You do have to
pay, but it's only $9.99 for 20 gigs of downloads. More SONGS and MOVIES than you would know what to
do with. Hope this was some help. Happy downloading!Quote

You download a whole bunch, when you're done, select them all, right click, and run them through AV program. It'll TAKE 1 minute to scan them all.Quote

Solve : zip code?

Answer»

Can anyone tell me what is the Canadian zip code my mail has been hacked by someone i wanna change my password via my secret question please someone give me

thank you in advanceZip code? I don't understand the question.
Also, I'm pretty sure Canada, like the United States,
has more than one zip code.here we go again... Repeat after me: No help for password cracking.
roflmao Okay, okay...I can do this...no...help...for...pass...word... crack...ing...no help for password cracking...

I was just surprised a person would only think there was one zip code...that must be why the mail gets lost...all those zip codes! Actually, Canada doesn't have "zip codes". It's the USA that has those.

Yes, good point -- I ADMIT I didn't know what they were properly called, but somewhere in the back of my feeble BRAIN, I knew 'zip code' was an "americanism."I am guessing here that the OP is attempting to crack somebody's EMAIL account, they discovered that the answer to the secret question was some Canadian postal code known to the account owner, which is described in the secret question prompt as "the Canadian zip code", and the wannabee cracker THINKS that there is only one Canadian "zip code" (!)

kasrawis, there are about 33 million people in Canada, and I kind of think that the Canadian Post Office needs more than one code to get all the mail delivered...

Solve : 'Delete' permanently deletes instead of moving to Recycle Bin?

Answer»

I deleted a file from Shared Folder on network - \\shared\c$\abc.txt

Instead of putting it in Recycle Bin on that remote PC, it directly deleted - i logged onto that machine(remote-desktop) and found the R-Bin was empty

Both my local machine, and my account on the Remote machine have the
Opt1. 'Do not move files to Recycle Bin. Remove files immediately' option UNCHECKED.
Opt2. 'Display delete Confirmation' option CHECKED

On Local machine,
1. when press 'Del', popup ASKS 'do you want to move file to R-Bin'
2. when press 'Shift+del', popup asks 'do you want to delete the file'

However, on Shared folder
For both 'Del' and 'Shift+del', popup asks 'do you want to delete the file'.. and then permanently deletes
why?

my guess is although Opt1 (above) is UnChecked for My account on the Remote machine, Shared Folders have a different setting..

thanksThis is normal. When you delete files from shared folders they do not go to the Recycle Bin on your computer. They are permanently deleted. You can't get them back except if there is a shadow copy.

Solve : Uninstall HELP?

I am running win xp ro and I have a lot of PROGRAMS I just SAW in my ad remove list.

They all look like I don't need them and they may be giveing me Browser POP Ups.
Can somebody tell me if I can GET ride od these?

marvell miniport driver
microsoft . net framework 1. hot fix
microsoft . net 2.0 service pack 1.
microsoft internationalized doman names
microsoft national language suport download
microsoft visual c + + redistributable
msxmL 4.0 sps kb927978They are drivers, patches and fixes. You need them. Removing them will REDUCE your system security or stability. Removing marvell miniport driver will probably stop your network adapter working. The others are Microsoft security updates and security fixes. Why do you blame them for giving you popups? Just removing stuff at random will damage your system. If you are worried you have an infected system, post in the malware section with details of whatever symptoms you are experiencing.

Solve : Windows Millennium Reinstallation Problem?

Answer»

I have a DELL Inspiron 3800 laptop with a Pentium III and 128K RAM. I am attempting to reinstall Windows ME to resolve a "registry/configuration" error which cannot otherwise be resolved with system restore or scanreg (I can also not load Windows even in SAFE mode). After using my Dell CD to install the files, the system rebooted; however, it never went past the Windows ME splash screen. Is it doing something "behind the scenes", so to speak, or is there another problem? I believed it would load other installation screens asking for my Windows LICENSE number, etc. Any help you can PROVIDE would be appreciated.

Solve : My Music problem?

Answer»

After spending the last couple of DAYS organizing my music library, I've discovered that for some strange reason the My Music icon in the start MENU is now pointing to the music folder on my backup external hard drive, instead of my local drive.

I don't know how this happened, but I would appreciate some advice on how to get it to point back to where it belongs. THANKS. Do you know where your music is LOCATED?Your registry key has CHANGED for some reason.
You can fix it by using TweakUI, or by editing your registry.
See here: http://www.infopackets.com/channels/en/windows/gazette/2004/20040415_change_my_documents_music_pictures_path.htmThat was easy enough. Except the registry change doesn't stick - when I reboot the path is reset to my external (I:) hard drive again. Is there a save option after I make the change that I'm not seeing?Try TweakUI: http://www.download.com/Tweak-UI/3000-2341_4-10002117.html

Solve : Blank screen, unresponsive, even in safe mode?

Answer»

I'm running Win2K sp6 on an older MACHINE. This issue began very suddenly and I can't seem to get a handle on it.

After bootup and logging in, under any account including Administrator, I can briefly see the usual desktop icons and toolbar for a brief while, but then the screen goes blank in whatever the background color for that account is (light blue, for example). There is no response if I try to left-click (to change desktop settings). I have to soft-reset and log out or restart, to get out of this.

This also happens in Safe mode, and with all combinations of msconfig that I've tried so far.

I tried safe mode into command prompt, and tried running explorer.exe from the command window. Explorer starts, shows me the task bar, and the explorer window, but then shuts down by itself, taking the task bar with it. Checking processes with Task Manager indicates that Explorer.exe has shut down. Something is apparently shutting explorer down immediately, and it's happening even in safe mode.

If I do it very quickly, in normal startup, I can usually get one quick task running before it all goes blank. So I've LOOKED at the Startup group (empty), RUN regedit and looked at the usual Run, RunOnce and Runservices groups (nothing different or new there).

It may be that explorer is crashing, but it doesn't give me enough time to get to event viewer to see if there's an error before it goes blank.

An attempted repair of Win2K made no difference

Can anyone point me to a place to start troubleshooting this?

Update
I managed to get into event viewer and found a d'oh! SORT of message in the app log, saying that the SHELL stopped unexpectedly and explorer.exe was terminated (no, really?) with an event ID of 1002.

This was good enough to get me through the KB and discover that the problem was something had replaced shell32.dll in system32 with a version that is vulnerable to certain kinds of attacks. There, the utility of the article stopped, as the instructions for replacing it WILL NOT WORK. Because the file's in use, natch. So there will be a sharing conflict if you try. You need to boot into something else that supports NTFS, in order to do the replacement. I used WinTernals, and grabbed shell32.dl_ from my windows CD. That did the trick. It's probably not the "current" version, but now I'm able to see and operate, so I can go get whatever the correct version is.

If not, here 's microsoft's explains on how to put the recycle bin back on the desktop:

right click on the desktop go to PROPERTIES, click the desktop tab then go down to the customize desktop you should be able to get it back then.

Hi, I have a problem with my TEMPORARY internet folder because it has a 4 gig file in it. I have erased everything in this folder and checked the show hidden file in the options menu but the folder still HOLDS huge amount of data that is nowhere to be seen.

I SUSPECT that other folders in my pc have the same problem. I have updated my avg antivirus and i also have a spybot and zone alarm program running.

I had the same problem before and the only remedy I can think of is to reformat my hard DISK but I don't want to go through the same process again this time.

Hope you guys can help. Its eating up a huge space in my disk that I only have 200mb of free space.Does the folder show to be empty? If so and nothing is seen how do you know it's there? Temporary internet file can be emptied by clicking tools, then deleting cookies and then files including offline content. If you have done this did you click settings, then show files? If so what did you see? If nothing click objects and look there, you will have option of deleting those objects but be very carefull what you delete or you will need to reinstall.Hey... thanks a lot cryhelp... whew!!! i deleted the files including the offline content... I was amazed that it was holding that huge amount of data... i finally got back my 4gig free space...That's GREAT.

Solve : Copying files created today and deleting old files?

Answer»

Hello all. I am trying to use a command to copy a file that is created daily, move it to a folder on another machine and delete all the old versions of that file on the second machine.

Can anyone give me some guidiance on how it can be done on a Windows 2003 box.How about a Batch file?

DEL \\machine\share\old*.txt
Copy C:\path \\machine\share\file.txt

This is what I currently have:

copy F:\sqldata\MSSQL\BACKUP\master\*.BAK "\\172.25.32.6\d$\FEP\FEP Script Backup\master"
pause

I use * because I don't know how to pick then one for the current day. The other problem is I need to delete all the old ones in "\\172.25.32.6\d$\FEP\FEP Script Backup\master".

Pls HELP.Batch code does not do date ARITHMETIC very well. If the file to be copied has the most recent date, this little piece of doggerel should help:

Code: [Select]@echo off
del "\\172.25.32.6\d$\FEP\FEP Script Backup\master\*.*"
for /f "tokens=* delims=" %%v in ('dir /o:-d /s /b F:\sqldata\MSSQL\BACKUP\master\*.BAK') do (
copy %%v "\\172.25.32.6\d$\FEP\FEP Script Backup\master"
goto end
)
:end

Thanks. It worked. I used skip to replace the go to label. I ALSO reversed the list given by the dir command to do the correct delete.

Solve : Screen looks like it's been stretched? Help!?

Answer»

(EXCUSE my NONTECHNICAL knowledge, I am at a loss here so if anyone could help me out I'd really appreciate it!)

I have Windows XP on my Acer laptop - I turned it on one day and the whole desktop looked like it had been stretched out - all the characters were blurry. It extends to everything else on my computer - ie. you know how if you have a box you can drag it so it's larger or smaller, well it's like my whole screen was dragged to make it too big for the monitor. I don't have any adjustment wheels on the outside of the laptop, I've tried adjusting display properties, but nothing works. If anyone has any suggestions, PLEASE let me know! THANK you!Right clik any empty area of the desktop and select Poperties...change the resolution SETTING one clik at a time until it returns to normal.
Some machines require a re-boot each time for the changes to take effect.thanks...I tried that (under screen resolution?) There's a slider you can move from "less" to "more" however I am only able to go from one extreme to the other, it won't let me move it anywhere in the middle. What video card do you have? Also are you running the lastest drivers for it?
Boot into Safe Mode / go to DEVICE Manager / uninstall the graphics/video and monitor drivers / reboot.

Now follow Patio's suggestion.

Solve : Low memory?

Answer»

I have just registered and it is my FIRST forum so please bear with me.

I am Happy Hippo and I am in the UK.

I have a HP Pavillion RUNNING Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition version 2002 service pack 2. It has 256MB of RAM

I am having difficulty because the memory on my C drive is only 21.4MB out of 13.7GB and I cannot do a lot of things through this.

I have tried cleaning up, taking off anything unwanted, defragmenting etc to no avail. What can I do now? I was wondering if I could make use of the oodles of free space on the D data drive which has 16.2GB free out of 19.2GB. What do you think or will I have to buy more memory?C, and D are separate drives, or partitions of the same drive?First off Welcome to CH !
Free disk space and memory are 2 different things...
You have issues in both areas.
From what info you provided you have a 14G drive and a 20G drive.

Xp will gobble up between 2 to 7G of that storage space alone, once you start adding programs it will be gone before you know it.
A hard drive (storage) needs about 15% of Free space to function properly with Windows...you're C drive is well below that and is one reason for the performance issues...

The 2nd factor is the RAM.
This is the Memory part of the equation.
256M of RAM is the bare minimum XP will run properly on.
Anyone including Microsoft who tells you different needs help...

To summarise the best thing you could do right now is add RAM.
Travel to Crucial.com to see what your machine takes and write down the specs and go shopping locally for at least a 512M stick of RAM. You're in luck right now because RAM is cheap.

2nd consideration is HDD space.
Those 2 drives although useful in their day are a bit small; however they may be fine for your needs.
Whether or not to invest in another drive is up to you and what you use your machine for ...and economics of course.

Post back with those DETAILS and we can walk you thru the upgrades...
But the first thing i would do is the RAM.Quote

Anyone including Microsoft who tells you different needs help...
A great big thank you!

I have taken your advice got more RAM memory and an external hard drive that is compatable with my computer. Installed it this evening and am finding the difference amazing.

You were a great help to a novice. Thanks for not finding it amusing. We all have to start somewhere.

But the first thing i would do is the RAM.
Now, you're happy hippo

Solve : jscript.dll error?

Answer» http://support.microsoft.com/kb/189655
I followed Patio's advice and was able to re-install Windows ME. This is just a snag when I re-boot. I just have to press any key and Windows comes up. What does the error say after "A fatal exception 0E has occurred at 0028....."? Any symbols, numbers?
You may have some hardware problem. An exception 0E has occurred at 0028: C006115D in VxD VNETBIOS(01) + 00000B8DDo you have any errors listed in Device Manager?I have a question mark on "other devices" PCI communication device and an exclamation mark on Sound, video and game controllers Crystal Soundfusion. That may be your problem. You need to download, and install network card, and sound card drivers.I just installed a wireless adapter to this computer but I didn't complete the wizard for the connection. That's probably why there's a ? mark there. I'll try to find the drivers for the sound card.Your error is EVEN more likely because of sound card driver missing. When you,re right, you,re right. I tried playing a cd and it get the message there is no sound card or no drivers. I'm doing a driver scan from Driverguide to HELP me locate the proper drivers for this sound cardalthough it may be difficult because of the age of this card. BTW, I tried updating the drivers for this sound card and it APPEARS to have removed the error when booting.
Update. I found lots of drivers but the computer will only accept an INF file. Any ideas?DLoad and install Everest Home form majorgeeks.com...
Run a report and save it as a text file.

Solve : Need Help Badly--Not sure where to post this?

Answer»

I have a HP 4150 laptop with a 10Gig HD, and 128 Meg of RAM, & Pentium II processor. It came with Windows NT, and worked just great.......That is until my son installed (or tried to) Windows XP. Now the computer just hangs up on the "Activation Screen" and when you choose to activate, an ERROR message stating "not enough quota to process..." So I cant even log into windows because it hasn't been activated.

I have even tried to reinstall windows NT, but cannot do it, because I'm told I am trying to install an "older Version" so setup is being cancelled.

My question is this. Is there anyway to reformat the hard drive? Unfortunately I do not have the original 3.25" setup disks, or CD, as I bought this laptop used. I am in dire need of this unit, as my wife is going to use it in her Midwifery classes.

Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated.Travel to bootdisk.com and DLoad the WinME bootdisk...
Use that file to create a bootable floppy to access the machine and format the drive.
You should then be able to re-install your original OS on there...

P.S. How are you going to re-install WinNT on it WITHOUT the CD ? ?Thanks Patio: ..I'll Try that.

I have my original copy of windows NT. I just didn't have the original SET-up discs for the HP. (figuring I'd be able to reformat off of those if I had them)

It just that every time I tried to re-install using the NT CD, I got the error of trying to install the "older Version." OK.. I downloaded the ME Boot disc from bootdisk.com. Had to burn it to cd in order to boot up up because this laptop has removable drives, and when run off a 3.25 disk it couldn't find the cdrom drive.

Booted up..everything seemed fine..I started system in safe mode w/command prompt, when I tried to do a fidisk/format for C: drive, a message saying "Incorrect MS-DOS Version" comes up.

Question: Can I burn the "correct" version on cd and then load it, and reformat C:? And if so, what is the correct version. At this point I'm almost willing to ake the hard drive out of the laptop, and run an electromagnet over it just to "scramble" its brains enough to allow a re-install.

Again, any help or direction would be highly appreciated. Well you could try the 4 disk set for NT from the same site...
The other way you could do it is to remove the drive.

Then grab one of these for about 10 bucks from a computer store...2.5" to IDE connector.
This will allow you to connect the drive to an IDE cable in a DESKTOP machine and you should then be able to format it using Disk Management.

You may also want to start collecting all the drivers for that laptop from the manuf. site before going any further...they will need to be re-installed after the NT install.

My Wife has a Compaq Presario, with xp-xp2 home,19 GB, with quick books INSTALLED. All at once when she tries to open the program, about half way through opening this message APPEARS (qbhelp.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close). Intuit is no help other than wanting to sell me a repair disk. I have run repair on the program to no avail. Ran reinstall on NET Frame just in case. I hate to reinstall quick books since she would LOSE her data. Any suggestions appreciated. Evidently this is a common problem with intuit. It must be possible to backup or export her data so QuickBooks can be reinstalled.
Here is one example of how to backup QuickBooks data, although it may not be ACCURATE depending on the VERSION your wife uses.

1. Whenever I mouseover a folder or a drive it doesn't show its size or length (for mp3 files). Earlier I used to get all details by just keeping the MOUSE over a folder or drive.

2. My clock is SHOWING in 24 hr clock mode....how to change to 12 hour mode...i.e AM PM mode.

3. My drive names is stated as "(C:) Local Disk"...how to change it this way

Some of your problems might be caused because your OS got a lot of TWEAKS that might destoryed some essential windows files, altough I'm not sure about that. However CH policy is not to help with pirated software, so I don't think we can help a lot in here, be free to correct me if I'm wrong.Personally, i would avoid anything with "awesome" in the name, as it probably was crafted by a retarded 13 year old. A quick Google search for "Awesome Edition Reloaded" brings up hundreds of results for "crack" pages which are 99% sure to be full of trojan droppers and malware exploits of various kinds. Also a lot of the page summaries that Google displays mention bugs and "features".

So I agree with Blackberry. No help for pirate products here.

Solve : Is this .bat file correct??

Answer»

I'm trying to create a .bat file that does this:

for any file that arrives into C:/Input the bat file creates a subfolder in C:/Folders that has the NAME of that file, like this:

File XYZ.txt arrives into C:/Input and the bat file creates a subfolder in C:/Folders/ so it APPEARS as C:/Folders/XYZ.txt/

and then COPIES xyz.txt file fron C:/Input into C:/Folders/XYZ.txt/ so it appears like this: C:/Folders/XYZ.txt/xyz.txt

SOMEONE provided this, I ran it unsuccessfully. What am I MISSING? Thanks.

Solve : Computer locks after 30s.?

Answer»

I was playing 'the movies' game last night and went to get something to drink. My machine had locked up and needed restarting. Upon restarting my machine makes it to the log in page and I log in, than in about 30s. my mouse freezes onscreen and ctrl+alt+del no longer works. Same problem in safe mode. Sometimes it won't even log in. Also, if I wait the 30secs. at the log in screen the computer freezes up. Any help would be great.
I have win XP with the latest service packs, and I have not downloaded anything in over a week, so I doubt it's a virus (and I can't run norton antivirus to see). Someone recommended I run disk cleanup and defrag but I don't KNOW if I can as it always (in normal and safe modes) locks up aftr 30s. Some computer info needed: processor speed, amount of RAM, hard drive size/free space.processor speed = pentium 4, amount of RAM =512, hard drive size = 256gb, free space = 60gbIt might be overheating. Try CLEANING it out. DON'T USE A VACUUM!Turn off computer. Open the case. PROTECT yourself against static, and give it a good cleanup with compressed air.
While there, re-seat RAM. Do you have ONE, or more RAM STICKS?
Don't close the case, turn computer on, and see if all fans are running.
Is it on-board video, or you have video card? If video card - re-seat.

So that was fixed, after I really messed things up. Unfortunately Microsuck Microsoft just wanted to make a profit by using "Pay-us-and-shut-your-mouth" support.

Whenever I open a folder, it will say something like:

"C:\WINDOWS. Access is Denied."

What?!?!?!

My permissions are correct. The stupid thing just doesn't let me in!

Knock Knock, it's John! Come on, LET ME IN!

I forgot to create a RESTORE point this month, so I can't use system restore.

So what can I do?Try taking ownership of the folders - see kb308421

Solve : My computer screen going blank?

Answer»

Can anyone help me with this? On occasions (quite regularly) WHILST I am typing my screen will suddenly go blank. When it comes back on after a few seconds, the last few letters I typed are all transposed. It is driving me crazy and slowing me down. Any suggestions. Windows XP. Touch type, so not being ABLE to see what is on the screen is not affecting my typing. WORKING on a lap-top. Someone, somewhere, must KNOW what is causing this!
It's so frustrating! The transposed letters are not typing errors, the screen transposes the letters every time it GOES blank. It does the same whether I am online, sending e-mails or working with the word processor. Help!!!Perhaps the monitor is faulty. Check if plug(s) are firmly inserted. I expect the letters get transposed because you have lost sight of what you are typing.

Solve : windows NT -- trying to backup files to blank CD-R and USB DRIVE?

Answer» HI, my friend has a Pentium 3 desktop computer with windows NT. I'm trying to move emails, DOCUMENTS, music, and pictures over to their new computer, a custom built dell desktop with a 19 inch flat panel display.

Anyways, on to the problem: I popped in the blank CD-R (i shows 649MB free, 0 used) and in a separate WINDOW, bring up the documents that need to be transferred over from the computer. I dragged all of them over and as soon as I did, I got this error: " Access Denied. Please make sure the file is not locked or in use."

So I individually tried a few in the list and NONE of them worked; I got the same error message. I also tried this using my UBS drive and got the same result. I went into properties and the documents aren't locked, ARCHIVED or stored as read-only. I can move and copy and paste the documents into other areas of the computer, I just can't transfer them unto a blank CD-R or usb drive, which is what I need.

Help? Try Thisdl deepburner and try it that wayQuote from: patio on September 23, 2007, 04:31:19 PM

Solve : Missing control panel?

Answer»

Hi! I less than proficient with computers and believe I had a virus etc. which was making my computer have pop up messages from Windows. I reinstalled back to ORIGINAL configuration or so I thought by using the system recovery. I have ALSO installed RegCure. My problem now is I have no Control Panel. I can't find it because it evidently tired and left. I also get this message - RESTRICTION - The operation has been CANCELLED due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator. I am the only one who uses this computer so I am the administrator and I don't have a clue what this is or why! I sure could use some help. I appreciate any guidance you can give me.
Terri1850You said you did a System Recovery. I guess you meant System Restore.
You can do another System Restore further back.

You could try Restore to an Earlier date before this problem started.
Start - all programs - accessories - system tools - system restore.
Microsoft has a Malicious Software Removal Tool (KB890830)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=en

To check on your windows files use.
1. Error Checking- This takes about 30 minutes.
Start - my computer - right click local disk © - properties - Tools Tab -
Error checking section - Check now - check mark both boxes - Start -
This requires a restart to begin.

2. Start - Run - type - sfc /scannow - OK
Don't forget the space between c and /
You may need the Recovery CD if any thing is found wrong
Don't insert unless asked for.

Do a general cleanup.
To clean out unwanted files.

Start - Control Panel - Internet Options OPEN -
Delete cookies, Delete files (select all off-line content) - Click OK to Exit.

Then go to Start - Run - ENTER %temp% - Click OK - Click Edit - Click Select All - Delete.

Start - Run-Type - C:\windows\temp - OK - and select everything except
temporary internet files, cookies and history folders and delete them.
Then Restart your computer.

Then use the Defragmenter.
Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Defragmenter - Analyze and Defragment.

What is the Registry?
The Registry is a database used to store settings and options for the 32 bit versions of Microsoft Windows including Windows 95, 98, ME and NT/2000. It contains information and settings for all the HARDWARE, software, users, and preferences of the PC. Whenever a user makes changes to a Control Panel settings, or File Associations, System Policies, or installed software, the changes are reflected and stored in the Registry.

Before we move on, we are going to make a backup of the Registry.
start, Run,type Regedit, click ok.

go to the file tab export and save it.

now expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, SYSTEM, CURRENT CONTROLSET,CONTROL.

you should see on the right pane that says "WAIT tokillservice" double click it.... now set the value data to 300 than click ok.

Hello..... please can SOMEONE help me with this...??

I used to open my folders with a double CLICK..... no problem. But now, when I double click the 'search' window opens up instead. When I right click I notice that the 'search' option is at the TOP, and not the 'open' option..... I THINK this has somehow moved itself around... Solve : L1 Processor Cache causes IRQL error?

Answer»

Hello, I'm not sure if this is in the right section, if not please move it.

Ok, so, I've been trying to install Windows XP professional edition. Whenever it got to formatting, it would give me an IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL error with 0x000000A. I finally NARROWED the problem down to my processor's L1 cache. I turned that off, and everything worked fine.

However, without the L1 cache, I find my COMPUTER to be extremely slow. Is there any way that I could enable it again without causing the BSoD?

My system:
Motherboard: Asus A7V8X-X (BIOS flashed to version 1013)
Processor: AMD Athlon ~2.1 GHz
Video Card: ATI RADEON 9550
Everything Else: onboard or integrated.

Thanks for your help

EDIT: I didn't post this in the hardware section because I had multiple other OS's and having L1 cache enabled worked fine with them. (Various Linux and BSD distributions). So I am thinking that this is definitely a Windows problem.hi, try this...
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms793589.aspx

goodLuck! spiderThanks for the help, though I've already looked at that link

But, it did work (the part about disabling the cache in the BIOS). My problem is, that I need that cache, otherwise my computer is too slow to work with.If the OS install went fine that MAY be the only issue with the cache...try re-enabling it and see how things run.

i have icons missing in both the control panel and the c drive. I tried tweak but didn't HELP. Also tried other programs and no luck. On the STATUS bar in the control panel it tells me there are 37 objects and c drive tells me there are 73 objects but none are visable. I tried reg edit and there is nothing in the don't load area of the control panel.
it must be something to keep me from viewing the icons but don't know what it is. only proteection program i have is f-secure. PLEASE Helpgo to my computer > control panel > folder options > view > and make sure the box saying "display hidden files and folders" is checked.already did that. i wish it was that easy
re-installing windows me is not an option either because I threw AWAY my me disk when i install windows xp. an then my computer crashed and that is when i found out that my xp cd has a scratch and won't finish at 39%. You will need a Windows CD to do any repairs...
It's unclear what you are running XP or ME ? ?I'm running windows ME for now.

Solve : cannot boot XP?

Answer»

My desktop will not boot into Windows.
I get the system screen up, so I enter the 'Setup', then 'Boot', go into 'Boot PRIORITY' to check the sequence to try to boot from the XP disc.
1st boot device is 'floppy drive'. 2nd is '4M-HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA'. Both 'floppy drive' and the '4M-HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA' are in [].
When I go into 'floppy drive', I cannot CHANGE it to CD - the only options are either of the ones ALREADY mentioned or disabled.
The computer will not boot from the disc. This is the Home ed provided by my computer builder.
Help!!
have you try pressing f9 while the cd in the drive during turning on the PC?then select cd drive.
I do that to my computer first what kind of computer is it. to switch boot seq you need to press the del key to change boot seq. Change to dvd first and hard drive second then floopy. you may have to use the f10 key or the f2 key to get to the bios. to change setting.

Solve : "Windows did not start successfully" !?

Answer»

Update:

I finally just took my hard DRIVE back to the place I bought the computer from. The tech guy hooked it up to his station, and said "Oh, you just have some corrupted files on here. I'll fix it for you." So he said the drive was OK, and said "It should boot up fine now."

I got it home, plugged it in, and it went straight to Windows. Great.
BUT... When I logged in, things started getting weird.

After loading my desktop and icons, it gave me this little teaser of a warning in a pop-up:
"Application Launcher: Unable to load configuration"

Now:
I have NO ACCESS to the START MENU. My only access is to the desktop icons.
I can view my files, but I cannot do anything with them. I can't copy them. I can't drag them into a different folder.
I CAN create a New Folder, but I can't put anything in it.

Note: After READING a COUPLE of other threads & forums, I'm getting a bad feeling that it might be my CPU.
In other news, I can't get the new hard drive I bought working, either. I'll post that in a Hardware thread, I suppose.

Any advice?

Cheers!

see if you can get in safe mode with networking.. if your still having problems with the same issu from the beginning... your OS still may have to be repair or reinstall.

IF you can get in safe mode with networking... go to this WEBSITE... for a free virus scan. http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

I'm successfully in Safe Mode w/ Networking, and it's scanning!

Thanks! I'll post results.

(I'm a little worried from other info I've read that this may end up being my CPU.) Ok, here's a screenshot of the FIRST portion of the scan:

Ok, I hit "Clean Now" at the bottom of HouseCall,
and then scanned everything again.

The Trojan is gone, but the 2 infections of WORM_SMALL.HYN are still there.

Tomorrow, I'll try to look up how to get rid of the worm.
