Solve : computer viruses, keyloggers, all that good stuff. can they be removed?

Answer»

by doing a system restore to the earliest possible date. does a system restore also remove saved data from APPLICATIONS like word, powerpoint, etc, (data that is good)

Try F8 and then select LAST Known Configuration before System Restore.....System Restore will not remove virus. System Restore is registry based, it only resets the registry to an earlier configuration. It doesn't remove new files/folders.No. System Restore will not remove viruses, keyloggers but it will not harm any files that you saved. If you suspect that you're INFECTED please follow the instruction in this link and post the logs in a new thread on that forum.
Edit. SORRY Evil. We must have posted at the same time. Thanks Ill try it, but if its too much work IM just going to backup the non infected stuff and wipe out the rest and do a fresh reinstall.

Solve : Windows doesn't auto load all my programs anymore?

Answer»
I've noticed a strange thing with my Windows XP PROGRAM when I START up my computer. I used to have a whole BUNCH of programs that would auto load, but lately it's been doing SOMETHING different. It will begin to load these files, and then it will kind of reset itself and start over and only load five programs. And ever since it's been doing this, I can't play anything over the Internet in Windows Media Player or REALPLAYER. Is there a way I can get Windows to load everything like it used to?Is it recent happening?
If so, did you try system restore? Thanks for the reply. Yes, it's recent, and yes, I have tried to do a System Restore, but my computer gives me an error every time I try to do the System Restore. It'll go through the motions like it's going to do the restore, but then at the end it gives me an error message saying that it was unable to do the System Restore, so that doesn't work.
Try system restore from Safe Mode.

Solve : Lots of processes!?

Answer»

I currently have 60 processes running (including firefox and windows media player). My grandfather (a computer EXPERT) says that my computer should only be running around 30...I have no idea why so many are running, but which ONES do I need to keep running, because I'd like to lower the amount running (to hopefully speed my computer up a bit). Attached is a screenie of my taskmanager.Nothing is attached.
Your NUMBER of processes is not extraordinary.

Download Process Explorer: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx
Unzip ProcessExplorer.zip, and double click on procexp.exe to run the program.
Click on View > Select Colunms.
In addition to already pre-selected options, make sure, the Command Line is selected, and press OK.
Go File>Save As, and save the REPORT as Procexp.txt.
Attach the file to your next reply.

Solve : file names have changed to include .jpg etc. and cannot be renamed ??

Answer» FIRSTLY I'm a newcomer to this site and to computing in general so I hope this is in the right place and please go slow and explain clearly to me any answers I hope you have.

I've been using this computer on windows xp for quite some time and all my photos etc I have stored in files and I've always renamed the photos simply by right clicking on them then clicking rename and typing in the name I want. This has never before been a problem, but all of a sudden all the photo names have appeared with .jpg or .GIF etc after their names and I'm no longer allowed to rename them or I will no longer be able to open them again.

The WARNING I get when I try to rename is "if you change the file name extension, the file may become unusable"

Anyone KNOW what I've done and how to reverse it Go Start/Control panel;
-launch 'Folder options' if it is in classic mode, or 'Themes' and then 'Folder options' if it is in categories view mode;
-go to View tab;
-scroll down and check the box prompting for 'Hide extentions for known file types'.
*censored* that's easy when you know how . . . like most things

I've spent hours trying to find that

I'm really really GRATEFUL, many thanks

You're welcome

Solve : NEW HARD DRIVE --- PC STILL SLOW???

Answer»

I wondered how you done that.

its just that i thought you were being funny because i made it easy for her , if not i apologise , harry that and that i DIDNT know it could be done as such.ok no problem , harryMom.
I had this problem and didn't realize it when connected on dial up.
After changing to satellite broadband the speed was about the same.
What was causing the problem was the Monitor. After SWAPPING monitors speed was amazing to what it used to be.
I've since ASKED about the problem monitor, but no one can explain why the SLOWNESS occurred.
It might be worth a try.BobI dont think that was the issue. It may have not displayed it correctly.

Solve : install script to detect 32 or 64 bit architecture?

Answer»

Hi all:
I'm CREATING a batch script that I'd like to count on for installing a Help 2 SYSTEM to both 32 and 64 bit architecture. I'm hoping to avoid an architecture CONDITIONAL statement in the script. I'm installing to whateverdrive:\Program FILES\Foo\Help2. For the 64 bit architecture I'll need to install to whateverdrive:\Program Files(x86)\Foo\Help2.
My thinking is that I can use the %ProgramFiles% variable to determine the architecture. For instance:
echo %ProgramFiles% on my PC will return C:\Program Files, WHEREAS echo %ProgramFiles(x86)% echos my input, %ProgramFiles(x86)%. I don't have a 64 bit box to test on yet, will that variable return whateverdrive:\Program files(x86) on a 64 bit PC?
If so I want to make variable based on the echo return, which will act as an architecture indicator without having to actually specify hardware.
Am I out to lunch? Will I need an architecture condition?
Any help greatly appreciated
thanks

Solve : How to make a wordpad doc stay the same when sending it.?

Answer»

Quote from: patio on February 04, 2010, 05:45:51 PM

Why not mail it to them ? ?

It depends on the position he is applying for. If it is SOMETHING that needs computer skills of any kind I would guess they will expect that he should be able to either email or post a resume on-line. The jobs I'm going for are in the outback fixing oil and gas plants, I'm a metalworker, no computer skill required. They dont have addresses, everything is done online these days. I havent had time to do anymore experimenting with abiword or anything yet, I will study BC programmers post again later and try that. I dont have a return button on this keyboard, and not familiar with terms like 'line break',índent' and to me the tab button just moves the cursor or words around to random positions which you adjust using space and backspace. I have a sattelite dish on my roof for broadband as I'm a long way from anywhere, when I've used my monthly allowance it goes slow. Thanks again.the return key is the same as the enter key.Quote from: BC_Programmer on February 04, 2010, 07:56:49 PM
the return key is the same as the enter key.
Both the keys do the same thing: on a Windows computer they will send a CR LF (carriage return and line feed) (or activate the defaulted/selected button) but if you don't have either key (quite strange if you don't) you can use the On-screen keyboard already added on your computer, or you can use another one downloaded off the Internet. Quote from: Helpmeh on February 04, 2010, 08:15:07 PM

No. they physically are the same key.

physically. as in real.

older keyboards labelled the key "Return" because that was the label on typewriters. even modern keyboards bear a mark of this previous incarnation- while they are now labelled "enter", they almost all possess a small graphical array that strangely enough depicts the action of "returning" to the start of the next line.

This is literally the SAME key. the same one. no difference. the only difference is the keycap.

With due respect, you need to change your keyboard habits.
The space BAR is only for putting a single space between words in a document. And after the period of a former sentence. s Avoid using two or more spaces. The tab key is for advance to the next tab stop. The backspace is for a correction. Or use the delete to remove letters to the right. To move the cursor you use the cursor control keys. In a template you ought to use the cursor keys to move around.

A proper DOC file will look good when you send it to a prospect. If you resort to using spaces and tabs together you will find that the document may not be stable if the recipient has a different default font type and size. This may be the reason you have had format problems.

Glad you hear you have a broadband. Now stop d-loading movies and get to work on your resume.

This university has some good POINTERS on doing a resume in a word processor.

Well its been downloading OOo for more than an hour now and it appears to be stuck on 118mb of 150mb, so I might have to press cancel and start again. Before I do, does 'cute pdf software' allow me to save my existing wordpad resumes to pdf? That may be easier for me.

I think you are better off to get out of a niche and get into the mainstream with OOo.

Even if you don't use all the features, familiarity with it will go a long way towards giving you skills you can use on any job.

Try downloading again at a time when it's not internet primetime, or download from another server like CNET's download.com. Even if the version isn't the latest, OOo will offer to self-update.Yes!, I made progress. Just typed one out in abiword, using the enter button to go down a line and those arrows to go up and down and sideways, (never used before, always used mouse to start a new line and space or tab to move across). I saved it as microsoft word doc, and it remained the same when I went to look at it in my documents. I am optimistic now that it will travel well too. I'm thinking if I write in wordpad using those rules it may work there too. When I type my email address in abiword it doesn't go blue and clickable like it does in wordpad. More likely to get a reply if they can click on it. I'll leave that tab button alone till I work out tab stops and etc. ps Geek, I only use the computer for important stuff like this, its facebook and wife who use all the bytes. Quote
your email doesn't become blue and clickable like it does in wordpad

You have no idea what you are talking about.First I want to thank all of you for your suggestions. I've learned a lot, especially about the keyboard. Its the best thing I could have done, coming here. I have just SUCCESSFULLY submitted the expert looking resume I wrote in wordpad today to the employer. They accept .doc, .docx, .rtf, .txt, .htm, .html, I used .rtf. They immediately sent a reply to my email. Now you can all get back to solving real computer mysteries. Good karma to you all, Sound like they can really use your help if they got back to you that fast.

Mysteries like yours is why we are here!

Best wishes with your endeavors.

Solve : passwords on Folders??

Answer»

is it possible to put passwords on a folder?Yes, but without altering the nature of the folder (IE, .zip) you need to use a 3rd party utility.1. If you have Windows XP PRO, you can use Microsoft's Encrypting File System (EFS) within an NTFS partition; although I don't necessarily recommend it. If some helpful person "resets" your password, you may NEVER get your data back.

2. Reference(s):

Solve : Problem with Laptop after reformat?

Answer»

Hi guys,
I've come upon a problem I can't solve. This laptop has been re-formatted before, and with the same procedure, but after this last time, when ever I try playing some online games, it will perform normal and smooth for around a minute, than lag more than my old Pentium 4.
It runs MOVIES well, off-line gaming seems PRETTY good too. So I would guess its now something to do with internet connection, but Firefox runs fast, and comp shows its connection speed is 100Mbps. Is there such thing as internet buffering? It's almost LIKE when I try and play the game, it's all good for a bit, but cant keep up the PACE for long... wireless or wired.
Any help greatly appreciated!
Tried re- reformatting multiple times.

Its a Dell Inspiron 6400
XP pro
2.0 Duo Core
2 GB ram
Geforce Go 7300If it runs well offline, I don't think continual reformatting of your computer makes any difference.

If Firefox can download fast in the same time period that you are having trouble with your game, it is going to be an ISSUE with the games you are using.

Also, I just solved a problem for the kid with a game that was having problems because the AV program was contending with it and using up all the available CPU time.

My recently closed case in the malware section discusses this issue with many games these days coming up as (false?) positives on various scanners.the problem you are facing has nothing to do with firefox I think the problem is in flash player you are using try install the latest version of flash player I think this will solve the problem.

Solve : INTERNET EXPLORER SCRIPT ERRORS?

Answer»

HELP. I recently moved and had to reestablish my internet connection. I have Windows XP operating system and Comcast ISP. Prior to the move my computer ran smoothly and my internet browsing was exceptional. When I reconnected my internet service, my computer began to run sluggishly. Whenever I logged on to my email or tried to browse a pop up appeared:

"INTERNET EXPLORER SCRIPT ERROR"

an error has occurred in the script on this page

Line: 1

Char: 1

Error: 'comcast is undefined'
Codes: 0
Url: Chrome://comcasttb/content/comcast.js
"Do you want to continue running scripts on this page?"

Everytime I clicked through the pop up it listed a different line and url issue.

Line: 3

Url: Chrome://comcasttb/content/comcast Email notifier.js

Line: 18

Url: chrome://comcasttb/content/registry.js

I have tried an AVG scan and another registry scan to CLEAN it out, but nothing has worked. I tried the registry debug in internet option tools, and it had no affect. Does anyone have a solution to this problem. I'm not verse in programming but I can follow explicit directions. It takes me 5 minutes to go from one e-mail to another. It takes forever to connect to a web page because of these pop ups. I'm losing my mind. Does anyone have a solution to this issue. I am willing to try almost anything
that won't cause a crash.See if it helps to - Control Panel - Internet Options - Advance Tab -
Disable Script Debugging (Internet Explorer)
Disable Script Debugging (Other)
Click APPLY - OKThanks, I tried that already, still getting pop ups. I appreciate the reply.Make sure you UNcheck: Display a notification about every script error (same location as above)Thank you Allen, I did that also. What other information can I give to give more of a complete picture about my system, that will help determine the best course of action. I know the more information I give, the more detailed assistance I can get, I just need to know what you need to know> I'm speaking from work computer now. I will be checking responses during the course of the day. Thanks again. Were you with Comcast before the move or is Comcast a new ISP for you since the move? What protections (virus, malware, firewall) are you using?I was with comcast before I moved. I use Windows One Live care. It is a pretty good overall protection system, it monitored viruses, malware and spyware. It performed computer tune ups and BACK ups every 2 weeks. Microsoft is discontinuing this service in July and reportedly introducing a new protection program. A friend installed AVG 2 weeks ago on my computer to try and stop these pop ups and fix registry errors, but I'm still getting them.Quote from: Deborah M on February 04, 2010, 08:17:21 PM

I tried the registry debug in internet option tools, and it had no affect.
I gather you're referring to Internet Explorer's MENU, which has a menu sequence for Tools, Internet Options. Is that right? If not, then to what are you referring? Tools, Internet Options does not have a "registry debug" feature. So, again, what are you talking about? You are absolutely right. The advanced tab under internet options. Where you click "disable script debugging" I'm sorry for the confusion. Thanks

Solve : Windows XP Repair Will Not Finish?

Answer»

I was trying to do a windows repair on xp and about 10 minutes into it it just seems to stop. The screens continue to change and it looks as if it is running but it isnt. There is no HD action or CD action. An hour later it will be at the same progress.

Is there a way to force it to finish or undo the process? I was not wanting to do a clean install.

Thanks
How are you performing this repair? With the windows disk. I see there are other people calling it the 34 minute hickup.Come on - be clear. Are you trying to do a full repair installation? If so, at EXACTLY what point does it stop? The 34 minute hiccup is usually on a new install...
Haven't seen it on a repair install on my end...but i guess anything is possible.
2 things you can try:
1) Remove the CD and clean it gently with a soft lint free CLOTH...don't wipe in a circular MOTION...clean from the center out...
2) If you have over 512Mg of RAM in that machine try removing 1 stick...

Best of Luck.Yes I was atempting a full recovery install. I have tried a few DIFFERENT windows discs one of which tis the original recovery disk.

Is there a way to undo the repair process? If removing the ram doesn't work you'll have to start a new install routine and format the drive before beginning the installation. If you boot to the same cd will it take you to the beginning of the install routine? If so, format. If not, you'll need to either slave the drive and format it or boot to a different OS CD and begin an install, format, then stop remove the cd before the installtion actually begins. There is no way to undo the repair process...at least none that i have seen thru the years. Thanks for the help. I just did a clean install :/

Solve : BSOD loop after trying to reboot in safe mode/now stuck.?

Answer»

Can I use a Dell Reinstallation CD w/ service pack 1a. to repair an HP w/ service pack 3? Will it allow me to open windows as long as all I'm trying to do is repair the drive and not reinstall it?Open Windows? You MAY be able to use it to get to the Repair Console, but that's it. Why don't you tell US what's going on?I am working with an HP pavilion a1430n CPU TYPE: AMD ATHLON(tm) 64 x2
DUAL CORE processor 3800+
CPU SPEED 2000 MHz
CPU L1 CACHE SIZE 128Kb x2
CPU L2 CACHE SIZE 512Kb x2
ONBOARD VIDEO MEMORY SIZE [64M]
Started with Internet Security 2010 virus. I attempted to reboot computer in safe mode by entering Run:\msconfig
and checking safeboot in the boot.ini file. That was a HUGE mistake. If I would have found this site a little sooner I probably could have nipped this in the bud, nevertheless, I'm stuck in THE LOOP. I have, I believe, the same stop code as many others:
STOP: 0X00000050 (0XF7F2E044, 0X00000001, 0X80537009, 0X00000000)

I have been able to run CHKDSK /R it came up with 1 prob, sorry, I didn,t see a code for it. It made no difference, it did not resolve.

Yes!!! I just ran a nondestructive recovery and it says it's successful!!! I'm waiting to see if windows starts.Recovered windows-still have programs that were installed before (AVG, MALWAREBYTES, ADVANCED SYSTEM CARE, etc.) but cannot find any saved user docs. Are they lost, or is there a way to search for them? I don't understand why I have programs but not documents.Did it create a Windows.old folder ? ?
Have you checked Documents and Settings for your old user name ? ?

I've never seen an OEM CD from 1 manuf. work on another manuf. machine so i have no clue what it may have done.No I performed a non-destructive recovery (or so I was led to believe), with the built-in recovery drive. Only, it wiped it clean and left only desktop shortcuts to the previous installed programs. Oh well, have a brand new computer now. I will FINISH here and follow-up with virus and malware protection, as, this thing seems to be loaded with crap before I even have a chance to get protection installed.

Thanks guys, I thought I had it, at least the OS was salvaged. No doubt you are probably missing some drivers as you used a Dell CD to restore an HP...
Double check in Device Manager. If you are still booting to the original OS you almost certainly still have the same malware problem. A non-destructive recovery (whatever that is ) would not eradicate the existing virus. And I'm with patio - I'm not certain exactly what you did.I did not use the dell install disk. I was asking if I could earlier, but I didn't. I went through the F10 function at the BIOS screen and did a recovery, which the system said would safely recover users documents and settings. Once the system rebooted however, there are only fragments of files, ie: a photo used as administrator icon, desktop shortcuts (only) with no actual program files. All actual photos and My Documents are empty and at factory default (sample photos).
If there is some way to retrieve these (lost) photos and documents from the point I am at now, that would be great [I don't KNOW if there may be some retrieval program to do this], but I'm not expecting to be able to get them back. I've searched all the related files I could find with my limited familiarity, so now, I'm focusing my efforts on cleaning out all the factory installed crap that came on this computer.
I am having some problems deleting some of those files/ not all are found in Add-Remove Programs, they seem to be hidden. How do I completely remove these programs that have been factory installed when they're not in Add-Remove Programs? Or, should this question be posted as a new topic?
In SUMMARY, I am assuming I am left with a newly restored computer, so, I'll remain satisfied that at least it has been recovered. All log files requested for virus removal have been submitted in my topic in the virus and maleware section of this forum.
Thank You guys, again, I realize how difficult it can be to understand what's going on, sometimes, when people, such as myself, aren't clear on what has been done, or use wrong terminology. THANX AGAIN.

Solve : toshiba laptop IRQ_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL error message?

Answer»

I have a Toshiba laptop that when turned on in normal mode, right after I pick the user goes to a BSOD with the following error IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL then below says 0x0000000A (oxFF1701F0, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0x804D9B64). The specs on the laptop are Toshiba Satellite A55-S326 Pentium M 1.6 GHz, 512 MB RAM, XP Home SP3. Part of the TIME if I go into safe mode I can get in and part of the time it gives the same error message as when going into normal mode. Does anyone KNOW what could be causing this and how to fix it? Thanks.More often than not that error is the result of bad or conflicting drivers. I'd suggest you download all of the current drivers from the Toshiba website and REINSTALL them (install the chipset driver first). ALSO see if there is a bios update available for your system. Then REBOOT and let's see what happens. He posted already at Bleepingcomputer and he received reply.

Been there done that (see my first post above) . Moreover, from the OP's responses it appears there is only one hd showing in "My Computer".

Okay, somehow I missed the earlier post. A capacity of 15.6 GB seems like an "odd" size. Makes me wonder what else is on the hard drive... (And no, we never really got an answer to those questions.)Post a screenshot of the Disk Management window...Hi again. Sorry, I guess I didn't answer the question before - I checked the C drive - it is the only hard drive that appears in "My Computer." See the FUNNY thing is, I feel like I've deleted everything non-essential. I really don't have very much stuff. And yet my computer is still completely full. I even got extra RAM for it a few years ago. It is pretty old, I SUPPOSE. I think I'm going to try taking all my music and word documents off and reformatting it (again). Thank you all so much for all your help!Check in System Properties - System Restore. If it is enabled, disable it. That will immediately free up a LOT of space.Ok, I will try that. Where is system properties? I tried searching for it, but nothing came up. (If you haven't noticed by now, I am almost completely computer-illiterate)Either right-click on My Computer and click on Properties or go to Control Panel and open SYSTEMOk. I did that and turned off System Restore. It now says I have 1.47GB free. And the program is installing! It's working!!! That's great. Thank you all SO MUCH for your help. You are truly kind people, taking the time to help the computer challenged like me, and I haven't given you anything in return. Really, THANKS!!!You're welcome. Keep in mind that System Restore is now disabled. I STRONGLY urge you to download and use a disk imaging UTILITY on a regular basis (there are a number of GOOD, free such apps from which you can choose). Ideally, the images should be stored on a second hd (internal or external) and updated weekly. Alternatively you can re-enable system restore and limit the space it uses.

Firstly thanks for all the responces

I have done quite an amount of trawling round the internet as you may imagine and im aware that you can kill your motherboard if you dont do this procedure correctlty.

The instructions i was following was the ONES from the mannual that came with the M/board I also have looked on the Asus site to see what they have reguarding instructions or files. I have downloaded the latest Bin file for the Bios that coresponds to my board.IVE also made sure that its the RIGHT file for my PCB version of the board.Ive also downloaded the latest Flash utility. My board is an old board so as you can imagine the support is not that good.

My board is an Asus A7N8X deluxe and the PCB revision is 1.04.The old bios bin file is AW1001C the one ive downloaded is AN8D1009

Just one more thing to add Ive also heard that flashing from WINDOWS is a risky way to do this so I dont concider this an optionThe bios can only be flashed at boot. Any .exe run from windows will reboot the system and then update the bios.Without re-reading the entire THREAD why are we flashing the BIOS anyways ? ?Quote from: patio on January 08, 2010, 04:24:19 PM
Without re-reading the entire thread why are we flashing the BIOS anyways ? ?
It's the second Friday of a new year.Gotcha... If i flash from windows and it goes wrong for what ever reason I dont have a way of recovering my bios "or to my knowledge anyway" If i mannage flash in D.O.S at least i have a way of re flashing my old Bios file BACKI'm flashing the bios because the CPU that Ive acquired needs the bios updating to enable it to function namely an AMD Barton 2.8 Post the link for the flash update so i can read up on it...I would very much appreciate your time and efforts if you would look for me http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us Thanks Generic ASUS DLoad page...i'm not sure what DLoad you're referring to....
Besides...how do you know the BIOS hasn't already been flashed ? ?
I have owned the board from New and have never flashed it also when my computer boots up it shows the bios version.
The downloads are for the A7N8X deluxe board.
Windows XP O/S
PCB version is rev 1.04
My Bios version is 1001C

The files Ive downloaded are AWDFLASH and the Bios file AN8D1009.

Somebody on here must know how to safely do this SORTED IT OUT NOW

And i did this via floppy disk.In my oppinion its the best way (risk free) to do it.
Ive installed the CPU and all is good

Solve : Deleting profiles tip on a network.?

Answer»

Thought I share this tip. In our training class environment, different users are constantly logging into the training PC's. Over time this creates a massive profile list, which over time slows the PC's. I know MS has a program call Steady STATE, but this would not do the trick. Using this program would not allow the computers to receive updates and patches push by the network at night. MS also has a program called Delprof that will delete profiles. This program works great, but it does have limits. The one BIGGEST is you have to go to each PC INSTALL the program and execute it manually each time you want to delete the profiles. This program only deletes profiles, thus allowing Networking to push the necessary updates and patches.

The work around is to install the program and create a batch file saving it in system 32 (or anywhere you want). Once done go to Schedule Task and create the task pointing to where you saved the batch file. This works great because once created you can adjust the time and frequently to run the task. BTW we set ours to run on EVERY FRIDAY at 7 PM.

Hope this helps someone, let me know.

6) then find network.http.maxrequest set it to 10

Restart your browser and CHECK I am sure you will find some differenceAnd if you're not using Firefox?

And btw, this is not for everyone: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Network.http.pipeliningUsers who want better page loading speed can try setting this preference to true, keeping in mind this may break some websites.

Yep, I sure like loading broken sites a lot faster.I've always found that an effective way to increase internet speed is to get faster internet.
Perhaps that's just me. your mileage may vary and so forth.

Obviously in cases were faster internet is simply not POSSIBLE it's helpful, but I mean; for dial-up, for example, you really can't do anything to "speed" it up at all. However, cached images can help a LOT, so it's best if dial-up users avoid emptying their cache.

Solve : Can't get past Windows welcome screen or reload windows XP?

Answer»

Hi,

I know this topic has beeb discussed before, but there are a few issues here that I have not seen in any of the other topics relating to this issue.

My friend has a Dell (dinosaurus) Dimension 2400 that was running Windows XP SP1 (mainly due to a dial up connection never being on long enough to peform any updates). The machine was working fine (if a little slow), but they wanted to try out mobile broadband. So they got a Vodafone dongle on a 1 week trial basis. Unfortunately, it would not load due to the PC not having a minimum of XP SP2. So I used an XP SP2 CD to load SP2. It took an inordinate amount of time before fnially failing to install with one of those "Unrecognized error, sorry for your inconvenience" (yeah, right) messages.

Shut down the PC as was out of time. Came back to it the next morning and on startup it presented me with the setting up Automatic Updates screen that you get when configuring SP2, fine I thought and ticked it to use automatic updates. Left the room to get a drink, when I returned I was surprisd to see that it was at the login screen with several USERS listed. So, I attempted to log in, but the keyboard would not work. So, I rebooted and this time the machine hung at the Welcome to Windows screen. I tried safe mode and got the same thing, I tried Last known Good configuration and got the same thing.

So feeling rather sick that I was heading for a complete disk wipe and re-install (they have valuable data in an application on the drive that I am not all sure I can retrieve even using the drive in another machine), I put a XP system disk in the drive to attempt a repair install. I pressed F12 to change the boot order to boot from the CD, which it did and brought me to the options screen for Install, Repair or Cancel. Unfortunately, the keyboard does not work at this opint either so I can get no further.

I have a feeling of dread that I will have to take out the drive and wipe it before doing a clean install.

Is there please anybody out there who can offer me some hope of another solution?

Many thanks in advance.
If the keyboard is USB you can either switch to PS2 or look in bios for a setting to recognize USB on boot. See if that WORKS.
Thanks for the reply. Keyboard is PS2 and it works at other points, like when selecting from boot options. Don't have a usb keyboard to hand, but can probably get hold of one. This is still leading me towards a re-install though I fear (I do realise there may be no escaping that particular outcome).

Just to clarify my earlier post (and apologise for the typos), the screen upon which it hangs is actually the "windows is starting up" screen and not welcome screen as I originally stated. If there is enough room on the drive, I'd suggest a parallel install. That is, boot to the XP CD and do a new install (DO NOT overwrite the existing installation, choose a new Windows folder). You can then boot to the new install, take ownership of the folders in the OLD install, copy the data you need and then either delete the old install or format and do a brand new, clean install if you choose.

One thing I suggest first though - the system seems to be hanging at the "Starting Up" screen which is why the keyboard isn't working. No harm in doing a FULL check/repair of the hd before doing anything else. Boot to the XP CD and choose the FIRST repair option. That will take you to the Recovery Console. Run chkdsk /r - it will take a while to run, let it finish. Then do the parallel install. Thanks again for the prompt replies Allan.

Unfortunately, there is not enough room for a parallel install and the problem with the data is that it is inside an application (I will research this further as I'm sure there must be files relating to it I can copy and then re-insert after I re-install the application).

Initially and it seems occasionally on restart it does get to the Login screen with the various usernames listed and it is at this point that the keyboard does not work (I realise it will not work when it hangs at the "starting up" screen.

My other problem was that when booting from the O/S disk, I get to the option screen to install, repair or cancel and the keyboard does not work so I can't select an option. Will try with USB keyboard when I get the chance to get hold of one.

Thanks again.....I will advise of any further progress (or indeed lack of).

I was not suggesting a usb keyboard, quite the OPPOSITE. From your first post it seemed your system was not recognizing the keyboard early on, which would suggest a ps2 connection might help. But now I see that's not the case. Switching to usb will almost certainly not help.OK, thanks Allan.

Any further suggestions would be most welcome. I have a sledgehammer on standby.

At this point, if you can't do a parallel install and a repair install isn't working you'll have to slave the drive to retrieve the data needed and then format and reinstall from scratch.

Yeah, that's what I feared all along. I was vainly hoping that there may be a miracle cure I hadn't heard of. Ahh well, bite the bullet and now to gen up on that application of theirs to see how I can extract the correct files containing the data (has to be a simple database of some sort as it stores records on pedigree cattle).

Thanks for your time and thoughts Allan.

Solve : Explorer.exe Freeze (Windows dragged over desktop make an odd effect...)?

Answer»

Hi there everyone. I thought this question would be asked more often, and I did do plenty of SEARCHING, but it seems like none of the issues are related to mine.

So, a descriptiong of the issue: The process Explorer.exe freezes and/or becomes unstable. I GENERALLY notice it when I try to click Start, or try clicking somewhere on my Desktop, or if I try clicking on an Explorer-related window.
Note that I am not talking about Internet Explorer, but regular Explorer.

time and I drag them around, they LEAVE an odd "echo" effect on my screen.

Opening up Task Manager (I use Process Explorer as a replacement for Task Manager) and closing, then restarting Explorer fixes the problem. I noticed that it may happen several times after, but for now things seem to be working fine.

I noticed this started happening several weeks ago, usually while playing a 3D game like any Valve-Source Engine game, and recently a game called Penumbra. If I have any windows up at the All games are 3D, and recently made.

If you ASK me, this isn't a hardware problem. I haven't made any changes to the inner WORKINGS of my computer, and this problem just started recently.

If you guys need any more info or logs, please ask.

Thanks!

P.S. In Internet Explorer this site's message box begins to glitch up, where as I'm typing, after pressing any button it jumps to the line I was just typing on, then it jumps to the top. Makes typing here very hard

Thanks kindly and happy new year. Did your system fail because of adding SP3 or do you have SP3 right now? Quantos: No, my system did not fail because of installing SP3. I had, in fact resisted installing SP2 and 3 for awhile. I did finally put in SP2 and then THOUGHT it was causing problems so uninstalled SP2 and that is what crashed my system. After reparis, I had all updates through SP3 on the system. I am automatically signed up for Windows updates and do all the critical ones. That was actually me who asked you...

Ya, bad idea to avoid and/or uninstall SP2. Install it and keep it.

Solve : removal of HP printer associated programs?

Answer»

I just recently purchased my first HP product, an Officejet J4580. There are two associated programs (1) HP Customer Participation Program 10.0 (282MB) (2) Shop for HP Supplies (260 MB). I don't plan to use these programs and because they are so large I would LIKE to remove them. When I go to Add / Remove Programs and attempt to remove them this is what I'm told; Removal of these programs is NOT recommended if you are going to continue to use any of the following devices with computer --- J4500 series.
What I'm wondering is; is this just a ploy or could some of the other associated HP programs be effected? I realize that I could just remove these two programs then if I did have problems I could reinstall the complete program. But if you could HELP in would be greatly appreciated.
Now should you tell to go ahead and remove them, they also SAY to unplug the device. If the printer is shut off why should it have to be unplugged?

Thank you for taking this question. In my opinion, they sound like junk programs that HP ADDED on... I would probably just get RID of them and then see if the printer still works. I bet it will, but if it doesnt just reinstall everything like you said and fallow their directions.

Good Luck!I've used a lot of HP equipment over the years. A lot of non-pc type test equipment and several HP printers and computers. Except for the cheapest printers, most of the equipment was very good. Their software is a different story.

How could anybody write a 260MB routine to order ink? Thanks very much guys. I'll go for it. Much appreciated.

Solve : System devices folder missing from Device Manager.?

Answer»

Hello, this I a great site. Although I haven’t found a similar issue as mine, I did find a lot of other interesting info. while I was doing searches. Maybe I found the solution, but didn’t know it.

Well, this will be long, but I wanted to show what I have done so far to resolve this. I have a Dell XPS410 running Windows XP MSE 2005. The issue stared approximately 3 weeks ago. After booting up I would get the dialog box saying that Windows had found new software and needed to load a driver. The driver it needed was “Microsoft UAA Driver for High DEFINITION Audio”. This seemed strange as I have good sound and everything seems to run FINE. I checked the BIOS to make sure the integrated audio was turned off since I use a sound card. I tried using the XP disks, MSE2005 disk, the Dell forum, many searches on the internet and Microsoft web site to find the driver without any luck. Microsoft did have a hot fix, KB Article Number: 888111. The e-mail I received with instructions on how to download the fix had warnings that scared me. This was more than just a driver fix. Someone told me to check the System devices in the Device Mgr and it could help locate the problem. When I checked the Device Mgr I discovered that my System devices folder is gone. I can’t help think these are related.

Last night I ran SuperAntiSpyware and MALWARE Bytes and did find 5 tracking cookies which I quarantined. I ran a full system scan with Avast and the Eset online scanner and both came up clean. I deleted all of my restore points and ran the spy ware programs again and came up clean.

Today I ran sfc /scannow with my installation disks and towards the END it prompted me that it needed to load a driver and which disk to put in. The only problem I had was when it would TELL me to put Win XP disk 2 in. I always got the message that I had the wrong disk in even though I had the correct one. Out of desperation I tried the MSE disk and got the same response. To finish I had to keep ignoring the prompts. I copies all of the messages from the Event Manager which told me which drivers were needed and that they could not be copied into the DLL cache with a specific error code 0x800b0100. I did some searches on this and found many results, but none seemed to match.

I am almost burned out and if it wasn’t for the “found new hardware” and missing System devices folder I think I would leave it alone.

Any help anyone can provide will be certainly appreciated. I don’t want to reformat and reload Windows if I don’t have to.

Thank you,
Bill

You're not making sense here. You said you want to use Office to open documents you created in Word Perfect. Please take a DEEP breath and start again. What is it that you want to do?I'm sorry, I don't have office 2007 but i have to use it at school and when i do use it at school and i need to take it home word perfect 12 won't open it. I need word 12 to open office files.Install Open Office at home...it's FREE ...and works with all Office versions.I think you will need to upgrade to version 14 to do that....

OpenOffice.org 3 can open Word 2007 files in the .DOCX format, but it cannot save in that format. So, assuming you want to edit files you take home from school, you could save them in Word 97-2003 format, that is, the .doc format, at school before you take them home. That WAY, you can edit them at home with OpenOffice and save them to the older Word format which can then be opened at school with Word 2007.Excellent point Soybean...

Solve : Restore registry without losing access to encrypted files?

Answer»

I'm in a real pickle here on XP Pro. Unable to boot the system, I restored the registry manually from another installation on another drive. This let me boot the corrupted system, but I can't access my encrypted files therein, since the process of restoring the registry means I can't prove to Windows that I am me! This is my first experience with encryption, and so I didn't think to back up my certificate -- or even know such a thing existed -- until I read about it after the fact (I've since LEARNED how many people fall victim to this oversight).

What I need to know is if it's possible, using some KIND of tool or process from this separate installation, to export my user account info (and/or whatever else is necessary) from the corrupted system's registry files, and import that info into the default registry files, so that when I restore the registry with those default files and am able to boot the other system with them, I'll also be able to access my encrypted files therein.

I've tried restoring just portions of the registry (which meant switching the master/slave ribbon/jumper configuration each TIME... ugh!) in an attempt to determine by process of elimination whether I could boot the system without forfeiting access to my encrypted files; but with no luck there, I'm thinking this "merge" idea might be my only chance. Any help will be appreciated IMMENSELY!As you've learned, you cannot replace the registry of one installation with that of another and expect everything to work. I do not know of any way to access your encrypted files. You might try system restore and see if there's a restore point from before the problem arose. In the future, you MUST either backup the registry on a regular basis (ERUNT) or, even better, use disk imaging software on a regular basis.in order to access encrypted files you literally need to be running as a User with the same SID (basically an ID tag). These are generated randomly when you create a user.

A better approach would be to run a Repair install on the system that is experiencing problems, rather then transplant a entire registry (did you know the registry contains data about the hardware and driver configuration, too?). The basic idea here is to have the registry, but fixed.[urlhttp://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308421&sd=tech]Worth a Try...[/url]

No promises.1. You need to restore a copy of the registry from the original system which contains the correct user_ids, security identifiers, and passwords. Hopefully, you haven't deleted its restore points (from the file system) and/or the initial first registry located "Windows\repair" directory (which should have date-time-group of the original installation).

Do you still have restore points of original system on the hard drive?

Do you still have the first registry stored in the "repair" directory?

If you manually replace the current registry files with the first set from the "repair" directory; the system should boot to its first "virgin" state. Then you use that system to see if you can access the original "restore points".

And no, I've NEVER had to do this...

Sorry, my wording was poor: I didn't attempt to replace the registry with that of another installation, but rather with the original registry (which was backed up by Windows) from the corrupted installation, as described by dahlarbear. I was working from the other installation. At any rate, I'm all good to go now!

Solve : delayed write failed errors,av scans not finishing?

a couple of weeks ago i found a link to secunia.com. adobe reader showed as a vulnerability. i deleted it and adobe.com, adobe acrobat, and adobe air and downloaded foxit reader as per suggestion from secunia.
a day or so later i was online and my screen went black. it didn't shut down, it just went black. i turned it off with the power button and rebooted without any problem or error warnings.
last week i changed residences and had my internet service transferred to the new address. the cable installer put a splitter on and ran the cable down the hallway to the computer room (about 25 feet). from there it is split again to the tv and to the computer. that is when i started having delayed write failed errors (in searching ,one of the 8 causes listed for delayed write failed was the cable being too long but i don't know enough to discern if that's the case).
since getting these errors, my browser changed ( add ons disappeared) and internet explorer opens sometimes when i search.

the event viewer shows numerous errors and warnings.

when i used search to find the device manager, i came up with ad-aware scan logs.

in system information>internet settings>internet explorer>cache>list of objects:

i ran COMBOFIX at another forum and it showed "mywebsearchservice" which i thought i got rid of and i don't want. how do i get rid of it?

my system is running slowly and i have so many questions that i don't know what to ask. i'd just like to get it back the way it was before this all started. any help would really be appreciated. thanks.

For your hard drive model, look here. http://www.samsung.com/global/business/hdd/support/utilities/Support_HUTIL.html

I checked and it lists your model as one of the SUPPORTED ones for the tool.thanks helpmeh. all of this is a bit over my head (to say the least).so i understand it as thus:

1.start>accessories>system tools>back up
run back up or restore wizard
choose "back up files and settiings"
choose "all information on this computer"
wizard only offers 3.5 floppy. is there anyway to back up to cd? if not i'll have to buy
a floppy in the next couple of days.

2.are the links at the bottom of the page for downloading of the hutil?

3.i'll be able to simply follow the prompts in order to complete this diagnostic?

4.when it's done, post LOG in this forum thread?

5.in setting aam, should i choose FAST or middle?

my thanks and appreciation for your help.Quote from: juanabe on February 02, 2010, 09:47:17 PM

1. You can't possibly backup "all information on this computer" to either a single floppy or CD-R. The floppy disk has a storage capacity of 1.44 MB. A CD-R has a storage capacity of 700 MB. You have a 176 GB hard drive.

Only "backup" data you can't afford to lose. You don't have to use the "backup and restore" wizard. You could selectively copy files to a USB thumb drive (flash) or external hard drive. In my opinion, that would be the simplest for you. Others may have their own opinion.

2. I'm going to take a pass on questions 2 THRU 5...

Solve : Stupid Black Screen/ safe mode error?

Answer»

ok here's what happened

everything on my COMPUTER was working just fine until i tried to install the program MorphVOX® Junior onto my computer, for voice changing purposes. I wanted to play with my voice for one of the songs I was recording.

anyways the installization was like 99 percent complete when all of the sudden everything on my computer started freezing up and being really slow.
eventually I lost my patience and shut off my system.
when i turned it back on, the windows loading screen came up for a couple of seconds and then everything went black.

I tried booting into safe mode but it freezes everytime after loading isapnp.sys.

can somebody pleasee help me???

BTW: I know there have already been numerous other threads about the black screen problem but my situation seems to be a little bit different because it seems other people are at least able to access safe mode.

Solve : Copying (graphics) between emails and also between OE & WORD?

Answer»

Is there a willing 'expert' out there to whom I can explain the details, which are a bit complex and lengthy, not to mention paradoxical.post em and we'll see what we can doThere are (received) emails consisting of text plus graphics. If I SELECT ALL and paste into WORD, the text appears, but only rectangles for the graphics. Whether or not I can paste individual graphics into the rectangles, is variable, but usually not. Then paradoxically, there are emails where I can paste graphics from a received into a new email ONLY after pasting first into WORD, then recopying from Word.
I think it GETS more complicated than even that - that is why I listed 'complex' along with 'paradoxical' and that is where I have to owe you further 'detail'.If the original email has the image actually embedded into it you will be able to copy and paste it without a problem. If the image is really only linked to it, then you may have difficulty.

Have you tried saving the images to an alternate location and then just embedding it from there?I am talking about emails in Outlook Express - so emails stored locally, not necessarily able to acces the internet for embedded links. Try this...right clik any image in an email you want to save...select Save As...and give it a destination folder...if it won't save then it's out there somewhere on the web which MEANS you need to have the SENDER re-send it...Patio
Thank you for offering a 'workaround'; my querry was directed to getting a grasp of COPYING, rather than 'SAVING AS' (which I HAVE tried).

Quantos - I had not answered you - but the above is applicable.Quote from: Sebastian42 on January 09, 2010, 06:12:34 PM

In OE, emails are stored locally, but they can contain links to external images.<>
Wouldn't those links be text - 'hyperlinks' - rather than graphics ?
They would be seen as the image rather than looking like a hyperlink though. If the LINK is broken that's when you see the red x in a white square.Quote from: Quantos on January 10, 2010, 02:24:17 AM

Let met get this right - are you saying that emails in Outlook Express, when the PC has gone off-line, can show images that REALLY are only links ?Quote from: Sebastian42 on January 10, 2010, 02:30:08 AM

I'm not talking about images that are stored in a server on the internet, more of a case that they have been moved on the local COMPUTER, and are just no longer where they are expected to be.

I'm not sure that makes sense, I'm tired and off to bed, g'night.

Solve : Can't turn off Windows Search!?

Answer»

Hey, y'all.

I ran a couple of searches the other day using Windows Search (and the little dog assistant thing). Got the answers I wanted, and Xed out the windows. Later, however, when I went to access folders in My Documents, I double-clicked on the desired folder and, Presto! Up pops Windows Search! It pops up every time I try to open a subfolder under My Documents, and I have to resort to File>Open in order to open the folder (whereas I used to just double click on the folder to open it). I've also noticed that "Search..." is now at the top of the File listing, while "Open" is second.

Is there any way to shut the automatic search off or get "Open" back into the default position? I can't find ANYTHING about it in the offline Help files, so I've come here to look for an answer.

Just FYI, I'm running XP HOME with SP3.

Many thanks in advance for your help.I got an answer on this topic at another website, so you can lock this thread or whatever is needed.

For those who might come after me with the same question, here's the link where I got the answer:

Solve : Clean xp install on dell without dell install disc?

Answer»

I plan to do a CLEAN xp pro install on a dell DESKTOP, but I don't have the original installation discs. My plan was to use a copy of xp pro (I have the dell product key) and try installing it that way. My question is will that work? The copy of xp I have is not a dell oem version. Also, I will download the dell drivers from their site onto a disc. Or, I have a another dell PC running xp home and I do have that install disc. Can I install from it? THANK you for your input.

I'd stick with the MS XP Pro CD...some Dell CD's will only install to the specific line of machines they were made for...
The Drivers will NEED to be done manually but it sounds like you have a handle on that...

Just think of all the bloatware you won't have to deal with... Ok, thanks.

btw: I'm on my way to becoming a pc tech and I sure do appreciate all the help I get here!No problem at all...
