Solve : xp will not boot?

Answer»

i have a toshiba laptop every time i power it on i get the screen that says choice of bootup ie..safe mode..normal.. and so on,but to no advail will my system start up it keeps reseting after the alotted 30 secWhat is different since the LAST time the system booted properly (new hw, sw, virus, error, etc)?there is nothing new about my systemPower on the computer and tap F8 immediately until I got to the Advanced Boot Options menu then Highlight Safe Mode and press enter... and it did not boot no matter what option i usedBased on the limited background provided this is the best I can suggest:

1) Boot to your XP CD and choose the first repair option. When you get to the recovery console run chkdsk /r - it will take a while to run, let it finish and then reboot. If still no joy

2) Boot to the XP CD and choose the SECOND repair option and do a repair install.BLUE Screen of Death. If you disable the auto restart, hopefully the machine will stop on a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). Record and post back with the "exact" error message text and/or numbers plus any offending software module it might name.

Use the <F8> function key during system startup to access the Windows Advanced Options Menu. Tap the key once or twice per second as you startup the computer (or immediately after POST completes and screen flashes black prior to DISPLAYING Windows XP logo with its processing bar display).

From the Windows Advanced Options menu, use the up/down arrow keys to select the "Disable AUTOMATIC restart on system failure" and hit .

This item became available with the release of Service Pack 2. It is not on the Windows Advanced Options menu of Service Pack 1.

Solve : my gateway died?

Answer»

My gateway xp died and I get the following error:

press F11 to start recovery
mbr error

Gateway wasn't able to help at all because I purchased it almost 4 years ago. I tried to reload the OS cd, but nothing happens. I'm not sure if maybe the cd is bad or if I'm just out of luck, but figured I'd see if anyone has any advice. Someone suggested going to bios and setting it up so it reads the cd first, but I'm not sure how to do that. Guess I also need things explained in super simple kindergarten like terms.

Thanks for your time!

Well at least you have a wau to get on the internet. Find yyour MODEL number and an more information about what kind of Gateway you have. Somebody here will try to help you with the BIOS settings.

For most Gateways I think it is the F1 key that puts you into the setup.

But my first guess is that just the data cable on the drive needs to be re seated. You just kind of wiggle it a bit and make sure both ends are all the way in. They get a little bit of rust on them after awhile. Of course, you UNPLUG the thing before you do that. And watch out of static electricity. Touch the metal cas with your fingers and avoid touching the exposed things inside.
What's the data cable...more importantly where is it?

Sorry, I'm really clueless on all this.

I have a couple of model numbers on the back:

Gateway
Windows XP
A sticker says MX6128
A gateway label says MA2A

Not sure if any of this helps at all.

Thanks for you time and help!Thinks, i kwill try to look that up.
Some older computers use ide cable. it is often a flat grey cable with 40 wires .
The poser cable has yellow black and red wires.
If either of these comes loose from the back of the Hard Disk Drive, you can get a boot failure. But I an not sure in your case.
Jere a picture of the main board of an old Dell outside of the case with the hard drive for illustration purpose. (It won't work that way!)

I just thought that your "some older computer use ide" was like you were saying ide is from the Stone Age.

Well, maybe I should have said it is from the bronze age.

Anyway, He has a laptop.
I was all wrong telling him to look for and IDE cable! When you first start the machine and before the Windows screen there will be a message at the bottom of the screen "Press ______ to enter Setup"
That key combo is what gets you into the BIOS.
Usually F2, F12, Delete or other.
Re-boot tapping the key immediately.

Once in setup you use the page up...page down and the arrow keys to navigate...
Find the page that lists the Boot device priority...
Using the keys move the CDRom to the 1st position then hard drive then floppy if listed.

Press F10 to "Save and Exit " and answer "Y" when asked.
This will now re-boot the machine.
Have your XP CD in and it should boot to the CD.

Then follow This Link for instructions to use the Recovery Console after booting to the XP CD...

A black console will load...let it finish loading and at the flashing cursor prompt type in fixmbr and hit Enter...
Then type in fixboot and hit Enter...

Remove the XP CD and re-boot the machine...
Good Luck !
Ok. I've gotten to the BIOS and have it booting to cd? I can hear the cd starting to spin (or whatever it does in there), then it stops. I get something saying press "R" for recovery options Press "Q" to quit and boot the OS on hard drive.

R doesn't do anything

Q Ultimatey ends up with

Hard drive write error

Maybe my cd drive is troubled. Is there a way to use a cd drive from another computer and hook it up to sad broken one?

PS. Yes, this is a notebookWhat does it say on this CD ? ? exactly ?

Sounds more like the HDD has ISSUES...not the CD drive.
Can you determine what brand HDD that is ? ?

If so we can run some diagnostics...

But i think you'll be shopping for a new HDD.The cd says Gateway at the top. Mirosoft Windows XP Home Edition
System Recovery CD/DVD
Use this disk to reinstall your operating system

Warning: he recovery process erases all data and files from the hard driveYes ...it will do that.
If you have data you need to save then you need to do a few things first...
Grab a 2.5" USB external drive enclosure.
Remove the drive from the laptop and install it into the enclosure.
Hook it up to a DESKTOP machine with a burner.

Hopefully the drive will run long enough to retrieve the data...

NOTE: Don't try to burn the data...copy it to the desktop machine instead and burn it later...burning taxes the drive more and is a slower process...not good for a failing drive.

When you're done you can try the procedure mentioned before again...

Solve : Pertains to Windows XP and DOS mode?

Answer»

Downloaded DOS version of DOOM(game). Downloaded in Winrar format.Extracted files.Tried to drag-n-drop in my "games"file. --(now during this PROCESS, some of the DOOM files were copied) ----Started deleting the DOOM files. Then this prompt comes up---------"Cannot delete copy (3) of DOOM : It is being used by another person or program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again."----------I went to C: drive search and FOUND the files. They still wouldn't delete. I re-downloaded the game AGAIN, and tried to delete the "copies". Still didn't WORK. So, I think I may have to go to DOS mode(which I know how to get there), and fix the problem from there. Any suggests? Just reboot and then delete the files.Still won't let me delete the filesTry removing them in safemode...
Rapidly press f8 at startup before you see the Windows SPLASH screen...Still didn't work......hmmm...maybe the computer Gods are not looking my way today...It HAS to delete in safe mode. Okay, try this - download, install, and use moveonboot (http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Boot-Manager-Disk/MoveOnBoot.shtml) or unlocker (http://download.cnet.com/Unlocker/3000-2248_4-10493998.html)THANKS!!!!!-- Used the "unlocker" program. *NOTE*-To any more users, do as normal trying to delete the file, prompt comes up with the denial message, click "O.K", then the unlocker comes up. Make sure you highlight "delete" in the lower left box, highlight the item to delete, then click the unlock box. BAM!!! It's deleted!!!Once again, thanks guys!!!You're welcome.

Solve : Windows did not start successfully?

Okay so my lap top accidently shut while i was running the check DISK update thing and it wouldnt unlock so i had to shut it off.
now when i turn it on this comes up:

We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have CAUSED this.

If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose Last Known Good Configuration to revert to the most recent settings that worked.

If a previous startup attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the Power or Reset button was pressed, or if you aren't sure what caused the problem, choose Start Windows
Normally.

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt

Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked) Start Windows Normally

Use the up and down arrow keys to move the highlight to your choice.

Seconds until Windows starts: 30

i have tried all the options but then this blue SCREEN comes up telling me to restart my computer and then run check disk but i can only see the "Windows did not start successfully" screen and this blue one

help!!!also. i dont have the original windows cd either on the blue screen it says

*** STOP: 0x00000024 (0x00190203, 0x8336B4F8, 0xC0000102, 0x00000000)Does chkdsk complete on reboot ? ?

DLoad the Recovery Console .ISO and use an .iso burning app to create a bootable CD.

Set the BIOS boot priority to CD 1st and boot to the Recovery Console.
Re-boot and this will load a command console...

At the prompt type in chkdsk /R and hit Enter...
Let it run to completion.
Re-boot
If that does not work :

Solve : Can't start windows XP?

Answer»

I recently ran a system restore, part of the process involved the computer restarting. When the computer rebooted however I got a BLACK screen with options: Start in Safe Mode, Run last known good configuration, or start windows normally, non of which get windows to actually run. I also TRIED using the f8 trick right after choosing to start windows normally and none of the options on that page worked either. Ive done some searching and it was recommended that I use a Windows XP (my OS) cd in order to run a restore or something. Unfortunately I don't have one, but I do have another CPU with XP on it.

I was wondering if it would be possible for me to somehow use the XP files on the working Cpu to restore my broken one, or if there were any other solutions.

Please note, you haven't explained what happens when you SELECT options from either the Safe Mode or Windows Advanced Options menu (other than it doesn't get Windows to run). Generally, a startup issue either "hangs" or displays a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) with a "STOP Code". The stop code with its parameters and sometimes a short error string or file name is the explanation as to why it is unable to start. Sometimes the BSOD is not seen because the system automatically restarts before you have an opportunity to see and/or read it.

From the Windows Advanced Options menu accessed via during system startup, you should select the "Disable automatic restart on system failure" option in order to stop on the BSOD display.

Solve : Can not close printer wizard, cannot open other programs?

Answer»

Running Windows XP on an IMAC with Parallels 5.0. Was trying to add a printer driver with the printer wizard when at the end of that process Windows XP locked up. I am unable to close that window and am not ABLE to run any other programs. I am able to quit XP and quit Parallels then reopen; however the locked wizard cannot be closed. That is quite interesting that the wizard remains open after quitting XP and Parallels. Parallels must be saving a snapshot of the machine state UPON EXIT. You might check your Parallels options and see if you can turn off snapshot saving on exit.

Also, with XP running, open the Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del) and terminate the wizard.

Be aware also that many printers use a custom install CD rather than the Add Printer wizard.I logged in as another user, deleted the printer then restored to a point at the start of today. That corrected the problem and I am now happily back to where I began. I was using the HP CD for my HP Laserwriter 4600dn and must have fracked something up. A printer was already installed (HP Color LaserJet 8500 PS) and it seems to work OK.

Trying to add a printer now anyway so as to figure out how to do this. The wizard says it does not detect any plug & play printers even though it is on my LAN nor do any printers show up when selecting look for a network printer.

Any suggestions? So do I understand that you have the HP Color LaserJet 8500 PS installed and it is working well, but that you cannot get the HP Color Laserwriter 4600dn to install and work?

Is either of these connected directly to your Mac? Or are they both on the LAN?

If they are on the LAN there are multiple issues to address. I'm really straining my memory to remember what issues I had when having problems with multiple OS's on my LAN. Someone might correct me on this, but it seems, for example, when Vista tells me I can't print to a printer attached to an XP machine on the LAN, that the problem is in the driver installed on the machine hosting the printer, not on the machine that you created the document on.

Secondly, in dealing with a LAN trying to integrate a PC with Macs, there are multiple issues involved. You can read about it more here and possibly find some solutions:

http://tinyurl.com/ybgaxeq

You might find it easier to configure Parallels to share a folder on the Mac partition, save your work there, and then print it with the Mac application. Alternatively, use a "tennis shoe net" by saving your file to a thumb drive and take it to the print server. A driver already existed for a HP Color LaserJet 8500 PS and it happens to work OK with a my HP Color LaserJet 4600dn. I was only trying to install the correct driver for the 4600dn.

I was also attempting to install drivers for Labelwriters to see if UPS labels I am printing on the iMac could be formated any better. Printing UPS labels were printing small and not filling up a 4x6 to it's edges.

All these drivers are now deleted and I am aprehensive about trying again. You know the saying let sleeping dogs lie.I see. It's hard to say what caused the initial problem. Why would the Laserjet driver work okay, and the Laserwriter not? Virtualization is not perfect either, and it could be a factor here.

I suppose it wouldn't hurt to try one more time, and if it doesn't work, just REMOVE the bad drivers again. Start with the UPS label printer. If successful, try the Laserwriter again. If it hangs again, you might have to be satisfied with the working, if not correct, Laserjet driver. Thanks! My pleasure. Best of luck with your computing.

Losing something, which you legally owned, by accident, does not entitle you to steal a replacement. The web sites and networks that you would have to USE to get a "free copy" of MS Office are pirates. Try Open Office, which is free. If you know SOMEONE with the Office CD you could install from there.
You will however need to call MS to register it.

That is if you still have your Office product key.

Solve : Installation and sound problems?

Answer»

Hi my names Winston. The specs of my computer are -

Microsoft WINDOWS XP
Home Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 2

Packard Bell
Intel (R) Pentium (R) 4 CPU 3.06 Ghz
1.5 Gb Ram

1x DVD drive
1x Disk drive with 186Gb capacity, less than half used.
Graphics Card -
Nvidia GeForce 8600 GT

The problem(s) -

If I put a Dvd into my computer to play it, the video plays fine but the sound is like in slow motion. The same happens if I try to play a cd. However, if I rip the cd then it plays fine. The same goes if I download a film, the sound will play fine.

If I try to install a game, or anything for that matter, it takes an age to do so. It doesnt sound like the disk is even spinning. If I try to install a game but have music playing in the background, for example on Youtube, the sound is in slow motion again.

I know that my graphics card was installed properly, I only just started reusing the pc regularly after it had been sitting for a year. I remember not being able to watch Dvds because of the sound being in slow motion but that was the only problem at the time.

Any ideas as to what is wrong?

Thanks

p.s. sorry if this is in the wrong sectionYour symptoms bring a couple of possibilities to mind.

At first the problem has the characteristics of a failing DVD drive. When they start to have alignment problems, they will be able to read any disk which is it burns itself, but has difficulties with reading commercially purchased disks, or disks written on someone else's DVD burner. This scenario is more tolerant of CDs than DVDs.

The symptom that to a different problem is that you apparently do okay with video I/O and only have problems with audio. I recently had a similar problem in which I had to go to BIOS setup and change my defaults from Fail Safe to Optimized. This cleared the sound stuttering problem for me, but similar obstacles can be FOUND in your Windows HARDWARE settings where you can look for the acceleration level selected for your sound card. I leave mine on maximum acceleration all the time, but reading some threads here has shown that this setting sometimes causes system instability, as can the BIOS setting. Thanks for your reply, so replacing the dvd drive would be a good starting point? Are most dvd drives universal? And what kind of specs do I want/need?

ThanksI always prefer trying things that don't cost money and opening up the computer before I go that route. There's nothing more frustrating than buying a new piece of hardware only to find out that it was not the problem and you SPENT your money for nothing.

I'd check the BIOS and Device Manager audio settings first. If you had a friend with a spare CD or DVD to test for a performance difference that would be ideal. DVD drives are available cheap now, so if it comes to that, I guess you really won't be out that much. Just ask for a new one at a computer shop. Just be sure you know whether you have IDE or SATA.Thanks, I would check the BIOS if i had a clue with what im doing but unfortunately I dont.On most computers you enter BIOS by tapping the delete key when the computer starts to boot. Some brands can be a different key.

Once you enter BIOS, the acceleration options are usually in the right hand column of tools.

Don't forget your Device Manager acceleration available right inside Windows.

Solve : Connecting SATA Drive to a IDE System?

I have a system that has no SATA connectors - Just the IDE ones ...

Is it possible to connect a SATA Drive to it ?

If you can't exchange the SATA for an IDE drive, there are companies that make "SATA to IDE adaptors". Search the internet on that phrase.

I've never used one of those adaptors but it appears they plug onto the back of the hard drive. Be sure it's physically compatible with both the "data" and "power" interface of the SATA drive. You also didn't say whether it was a 2.5 (laptop?) or 3.5 inch drive.Quote from: dahlarbear on January 17, 2010, 04:35:57 PM

I believe the controller card is PROBABLY the better choice, compared to an adapter.

Assuming you would get one for a PCI slot, not PCI Express, here's an inexpensive one: SYBA SD-SATA150R PCI SATA Controller Card. More here. And the biggest advantage of an addon PCI card such as Soybean mentioned vs. an adapter is with most they can be configured to be bootable...not always true with adapters...depending on the system setup.

Solve : Lost the cd rom drives?

Answer»

I have no idea how it happened, but my computer LOST the D drive and my external CD burner. When I go to My computer they are not there, and my CD burning software tells me that they are not installed. I need help!!!! Thanks.I assume d: is a cd drive? Did you recently install any new software? No, nothing new in the last weeks.See if this helps:

START - RUN - REGEDIT

Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class

then to: Key: {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Delete All Value Data from UpperFilters and LowerFilters

Do not delete the Key or String Values, only the data values

Exit regedit & reboot.
I got there, but can't figure out what to delete. What is "value data" and "upper and lower filters"? Sorry, but I am a total moron. When you are at that key go to the right-hand pane and double-click on UpperFilters and delete the data. Do the same for LowerFilters. Exit regedit and reboot.

BEFORE you do any of that you might want to download ERUNT and make a backup of your registry.

I'll be offline for a couple of hours starting now, but will check this thread as soon as I return. I look forward to good news You are the man! If someday I meet you in person I will kiss your toes. My daughter is getting married in TWO weeks and I have to burn photo CD's that she is going to give to the guests, she was not happy last night when I TOLD her that there was a problem with the computer. You saved the PROJECT and my life! Thanks!!!Can we negotiate up from the toes?

Happy to help and glad it's all sorted. I will go as far as the ankle...

These will be helpful in diagnosing the issues...Well I just got it PRETTY much rebuilt because the original PARTS to it were 4 YEARS old but I did that so I could get some of the newer parts for it and so it would run a bit better. But since about a week after that it started this.

Solve : Slow running computer?

Answer»

Fault symptoms are black screen @ startup "malfunction during LAST switch off". Computer runs slower after each startup. Info window says ATI PANEL failed to initialize fault "thread stuck in device driver Q293078" .Tried to download driver but this caused a message no driver present. Also tried to install driver from original tools disk supplied during purchase. no better result. Then reinstalled Windows Xp from disk supplied. Worked ok until after switch off. It gets slower after each switch off.

Toshiba A60-165 laptop , Graphics card is ATI Mobility Radeon 700 IGP , Windows XP home OS age about 3years old. Security MaAfee. Ram 256Mb.

Cannot understand how I have a screen display if video driver not present. One driver down load site tested computer & said driver ok. Also turned down Hardware acceleration slider. I feel fault OCCURS @ switch off but I am now out of ideas. Any idea's welcome, Thanks .Quote

how I have a screen display if video driver not present
Windows loads its default driver, not ATI driver, if ATI driver is faulty.

Your main problem is "Ram 256Mb".

Also, some of those A series Toshiba laptops are known for bad motherboards. Thanks "Broni" for your comment's I have learned something. I did'nt know about default drivers. I agree 256MB Ram is small by current standards but this machine has not been modified & is in purchase condition. It has been a problem since new & little used. It belongs to a friend who I am trying to help. Pensioner. Is it still under warranty?I sit still at WEDDINGS and Funerals...You have to see everything, don't you? No its well out of warranty.Yeah, it looks like you may have some hardware problem.
Try to run HD diagnostic: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287#seagate
Since Toshiba don't provide any HD diagnostic tool, try Seagate tool.Tried Broni's Seagate suggestion but no luck on that. Tried reloading windows again & computer runs correctly in all respects until it is switched off. Then it restarts with a brief black background screen & message "recovering from a serious error". It runs slowly after that. I noticed that the black screen had info about alternative startups so I tried "safe mode with networking". It runs at normal speed in this mode. Can anyone tell me what I should try next? What exactly happened with Seagate tool? When I set it doing the various SCAN options the blue box filled gradually but when it stopped nothing happened. No report, nothing. Blank screen below the disc info. Probably my fault because of my inexperience using it.

Sounds like you didn't give it enough time...
It should generate a report whether there are issues or not.
Run it before bedtime...Yes you are correct. It runs so slowly that even the SMART scan took for ever. Anyway I did a full set of scans (5) while working in safe mode today, all were given a "pass". I looked very carefully at the Microsoft tools info but again all looked OK.
Also looked at the Advanced Windows Options Menu using f8 key & enabled boot logging at start-up. A file is supposed to be created called ntbtlog.txt which is found in directory %windir% but I couldn't find it.

I think, you have two options.
Get more RAM, or clean reinstall.
With 256MB of RAM, XP will be slow, and slower over time.

Solve : Duplicate folders and files?

Answer»

Windows XP HOME SP3
Dell Dimension 2350 Computer
Internet Explorer 8
======================

Recently I had a "clean install", using Dell CD #3.

In different dates, I had received from Dell 3 Reinstallation CDs of the Operating System, as per my REQUEST:

#1.-Reinstallation CD - Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Service Pack 1 (it came when I bought the computer from Dell).
#2.-Reinstallation CD - Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Service Pack 2.
#3.-Reintsallation CD - Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Service Pack 3, for Ultra Low Cost PCs.

===========================================================

My question:

How could I remove duplicate folders and files that I found in Windows Explore, after the last reinstallation? I lost about 10 GB in the harddrive of 40GB.

===========================================================

Please advise.

Thank you.

Where are the other 2 CD's from ? ?
Why not just use th 1 that came with the MACHINE ? ?The 3 Cds came from Dell.

I figured if I was using the CD #3 the system would be upgraded.

What duplicate folders are you talking about? And if you ran cd3 as an inplace upgrade then it did just that, but if you ran it as a new install you probably have two windows installations.Hi Allan,

I went to Windows Explore and found:

All Users
All Users.WINDOWS.0
All Users.WINDOWS.1

Default User
Default User.WINDOWS.0
Default User.WINDOWS.1

Owner
Owner.RC
Owner.RC.000

WINDOWS
WINDOWS.0
WINDOWS.1

I also found that the "Current Product Key" is different that the "Original Product Key".

Please help me.

Thank you.
You have Windows INSTALLED twice...let us know where you want to go from here...
But i'd suggest wiping the drive and starting over...Actually it looks like 3 installations. I agree with patio - if I were you I'd backup DATA and start again.
Hi Allan,

Please let me know how to proceed, so I can start from the scratch.

Thank you.

Boot to the XP SP3 CD. When the installation process starts you'll be given the option to format before proceeding - choose that option. Then go ahead and install.Because of #1 CD was the original Operating System that came with the Dell Computer 2350, it would not be better to use it, instead of #3 CD?

Also, please give some tips how to start the "clean install".

Thank you for your advise. If disc 3 is a complete XP SP3 version then that's what you use. Enter your bios and make sure the cd is the first device in the boot order. Then insert the cd and reboot. Thanks again for your valued information.

Have a nice day. You're welcome. Please stop back when you've completed the process and let us know it's all good.I will do it.

My friend has a Hp win XP home edition he was shutting it down with updates and he hit the power BAR and this the computer boots up and promps him wheather to boot in safe mode or normal mode he its normal and the computer began to LOAD and it restarts. I'm not sure I could understand your post even with punctuation -- but let's try, shall we?ok he was shutting it down and it began updates and it was taking too long so he pulled the cord. @ hours later he turned it on It starts up shows the hp symbol and shows the boot system normal screen . He clicks that and the computer boots and then it just restartscould be something WRONG with the power supply unit.no wouldn't it has something to do with corruption of os since he was installing updatesim just adding something that could be wrong, so it uploaded updates and it wont start since, and it asked if it can go into safe mode. hmmmm. When your system boots or restarts again press the F8 or tab key it will take u to the choice screen.
select the last known good config OPTION.
hope it will workI do this and when i hit an option like normaly boot or safe mode it tries to boot but then restarts
I did also what you said it seems to rebout anyway.are you sure the only thing that you downloaded was updates?? because your friend might have a virus. just keep trying while i figure it outtry this website. and if that doesn't work you gonna have to reinstall the OS

Solve : computer problem (windows xp)?

Answer»
ah' okay, tanx a lot! I'll do what you've instructed me to do. Just one more thing, my computer is very new I just wanted to know if it's still as good as new after being reformatted because of a virus?? Does it perform 100% well after being reformatted??After you FOLLOW the instructions, a Malware expert will examine your logs and advise you whether your computer can be restored to 100% health or if you have an incurable virus.
Tanx! Does a virus affect or ruin a hardware of a computer??A virus is a software issue. Incurable viruses corrupt Windows so badly that your Windows SETUP cannot be saved. In such a case your drive has to be reformatted. Then you have to install Windows and all of your software again. A virus cannot survive this kind of erasure. A virus cannot damage your hardware.

Some medium level viruses can be cleaned, but may leave undetectable traces which can pose a low level threat. Your malware removal expert can advise you if the virus DETECTED on your computer can be completely removed or not without erasing your hard drive. So why does my computer doesn't boot at all if a virus is only damaging the software of a computer??? In your own view, what is the main reason why a computer doesn't boot at all???A lot of things are theoretically possible. What has been written here has been in the context of what is likely needed in your case.

Based on your posts, efforts have been directed at helping you. If we take the discussion into hypothetical directions, a computer can fail to boot for a wide variety of reasons. If you search all of the forums here, you will see discussions of problems with hardware failures, corruption of Windows boot files, and malware issues. If the machine is that new i would RETURN it for a replacement.
Yah' your right'. . after the reformat if the problem still occur I will ASK for a replacement. Tanx' a lot for enlighten me with this problem. Hope everything will be okay then. Big thankzzzzzzzzzz . . . . Formatting it may Void the Warranty...check your terms of purchase...

Solve : Taskbar Color Gone?

Hello,

I have recently went into my Administrative Tools folder then Services and turned off a BUNCH of services that i know that i don't need....such as the ones for networking. I am not on a network and never will be at home. I also did this to my mom's computer with no problems. We both use XP Pro.

Now, my taskbars COLOR has changed from blue to white and i don't know how to GET the original color BACK.

Can someone help me with the problem.

Thank you.Go back into services, sort on Startup Type, scroll down to disabled and either re-enable the all of the services or look for the ones you think might be causing your problem. Next TIME, NEVER disable service unless you are 100% certain you understand what they do, their dependencies, and the potential results.Use system restore to a date before monkeying.re-enable the Themes service.

Solve : XP computer can't find it's own hard drive?

Answer»

I'm using an external HD, just going through copying files as I find them. such as FOLDERS containing documents, music, pictures, things I created or collected. At this point I am not worried about program files. I WOULD not expect t see only these Uninstall files and nothing else in the Windows folder. If I were to copy HD to HD I would hope to copy a complete Windows folder. My question is ...is the file incomplete or corrupt? Your old hard drive may be really messed up.Best to start FRESH with new HD. I was hoping to go the easy way out and copy drive to drive.

Thanks for the help.You're welcome

Solve : Want to change XP language from Turkish to English!...?

Answer»

Hey!

We just got a USED computer recently..but the language it CAME in was in Turkish. Obviously, we want to change it to English but don't know exactly know how to with all these weird menus and words. So does anyone know how to do this without getting a new english xp cd? Please HELP.

Thanks in advance! There is a policy Microsoft has about this issue.
If your company is an International Corporation, and if the company has a Corporate License from Microsoft, your company can PROVIDE you with a new XP install CD in English.

Or a special pack that will convert the present installation. Due to the numerous updates that have taken place, the service pack for the conversion may no longer be usable.

Otherwise, as far as I know, the is no quick easy way to convert the entire Windows OS over to another Western language. But you can get applications that work in another language.

But, there is a Turkish Microsoft Windows sold as the Windows XP Pro MultiLingual for $300 and I would think that is NOT what you have and you do not want to shell out that kind of money.

Sorry, I am not much help.
Get English Windows XP CD, format the drive, install Windows.Seconded

The first thing I do, when I get a used computer, is wipe the hard drive. This will give you a clean start.Hello!

Okay...i have reformatted and installed new XP with english on it. Thanks for your suggestions! GOOD

Or like Australia (they may be ATTEMPTING to...I'm not quite sure if they've pulled it off yet...)?The only way I would want the government involved in the managing the internet is for spam, which to a very limited way they do now with criminal percussion's. And a lot of that depends on your definition of free speech. For percussion they should get ahold of Ginger Baker...Oh well, after years of drugs, I wonder if Ginger knows how to use a computer?...or Buddy RICH!

Solve : Ultra DMA not working - HD slow in PIO mode?

Answer»

Hi,

Running XP Pro SP3. I visited PC Pitstop and learned that my hard drive is running too slow because Ultra DMA is not running and that my drive has dropped down to PIO, reducing my throughput from an expected 30 Mb/s to 3.

It said Microsoft indicates I/O errors as the most common cause for dropping out of UDMA. Looking in Disk Manager, I see the partitions are marked "At Risk". Looking in Help and Support, it says this label is applied after I/O errors. It recommends reactivating the underlying disk to reset the partitions to a "Healthy" status.

The problem is, I don't understand exactly what this means or how to do it. I presume it is referring to the physical disk as opposed to the logical disk. In Disk Manager, I can right click the partitions, and there is a Reactivate menu option, but it is grayed out.

Motherboard is Soyo KT400 Dragon with Via Bus Master IDE controller 0571. I have downloaded the latest HyperIon drivers. Hard drive is Seagate ST3250823A, about a year old. I have the correct 80 pin ribbon cable and the DVD slave is ABLE to run in UDMA even though the hard drive cannot. Drive is partioned into 25GB C:, 25GB D:, and the rest on E:

The only odd thing is have C: as the second partition because I was running triple boot, and didn't like the OS running on the first partition. Otherwise Windows runs fine. Well, I shouldn't SAY that. This XP has constant problems with freezing and needing to be rebooted (plus hard START - like a car.... hehe!) I've reset BIOS from Optimized to Fail Safe and it has been quite stable for a couple of days now. Still doesn't recover from Sleep (S3) though. Not sure on hard starting. Need more time to see how "Fail Safe" is helping me.

Note: This is not the same computer that is being helped on the Malware Forum!

Thanks
IDE drive or SATA ? ?
If IDE go to Device Manager...Clik IDE controllers to expand the list.
Right clik and select Properties and make the appropiate changes in there.
Re-boot and double check that the settings were retained.

UDMA if available is the optimum setting...

NOTE 1 very common reason for this OCCURING is when you have 3 or 4 consecutive read/write errors from a HDD...therefore i'd suggest DLoading the diagnostics from the HDD manuf site...follow the info on creating a bootable CD and boot to the CD and run the long test.Thanks. This is an IDE drive.

After a little more poking around I discovered in Disk Management that if I right click on the Disk 0 area at the left instead of on the partition area, the Reactivate Disk menu item is available. Doing that removed the "At Risk" label as indicated in Help and Support, but it did not GIVE me back UDMA on the drive.

So I followed your suggestion and visited Seagate. All I could see is Seatools for Windows, but the program is really sharp. After running it, it told me the same as you, to run the live CD, which is called Seatools for DOS, and also told me that the ISO was included in the installation directory.

After running that, it failed my drive on the short test and recommended the long test for repair and the possibility to get a new status of "Pass after repair" on the retest. 14 bad LBAs were found and repaired, and I did indeed get the new status, "Pass after repair".

This did not, however, return my drive to UDMA. The Device Manager setting is already at DMA if Available, however, the status bar under it says "Current Transfer Mode: PIO Mode"

Any more ideas?

ThanksI ran SiS Sandra to look a little closer into this. Sandra said my drive was already in Ultra DMA-5, but still only benchmarked 3 MB/s. So I Googled this and found two sites which said that once Windows decides a drive is PIO, it won't switch back on its own.

One site listed registry keys to edit out the information that the drives had I/O errors, but the other had a more simple solution to uninstall the IDE interface that was showing PIO mode, reboot to complete the removal, reboot again to complete the re-installation, and then check Properties again.

Worked for me! Drive now showing 53 MB/s and Windows acknowledges UDMA-5.Good to hear you got it...

Quote

So I Googled this and found two sites which said that once Windows decides a drive is PIO, it won't switch back on its own.

Solve : Error Code 2753 and MSI.dot4wrp?

Answer»

Hi, I have an HP All in one with an error code of 2753 and MSI.dot4wrp. It all started when I tried to print a document I worked on for about 5 hours. It printed Backwards, I printed a diagnostic page it worked fine. I tried to print after the diagnostic and still sdrawkcaB! I don't remember where I put my software disc, so I dowmloaded the full PACKAGE from HP, then dumped my software in hopes to reload with a better outlook on printing. I have been to the Set PRINTER Preferences several times in the past and this condition keeps poping up, so I thought I would take the time and fix it right this time. I get to the 5th step in the installation and fall flat on my face, why?OK. There are various steps on the HP site that might possibly help. BUT, my experience of this recently, is that the (awful) HP software needs to be manually removed from your system, registry and files, before it will accept any reinstall. It may work after just removing the files in the system32 folder, that's worth a try.
You may find that these system32 files can't be removed in Windows. I had to boot in Linux and then navigate to my windows32 folder.
Which is probably also the explanation. The install operation made these files impossible for the HP uninstall operation to remove, or the reinstall to overwrite.
Any file starting HPq HPx or HPZ needs to be hunted down and killed. And the registry entries.
HP software is awful!

TerryAfter spending countless hours on the phone with tech support and following everything i already did on the HP support website tbernstein finally gave me a solution that worked. I did everything you said and was able to finally reinstall my hpj6480 printer with all functions. I believe my error code of 2753 and MSI.dot4wrp were due to the recent updates I kept getting from HP for the printer. everytime i downloaded an update my printer kept losing some of its functions. so i decided to uninstall than reinstall but everytime i did i kept getting the stupid error code of 2753. Even after doing the suggested level 3 uninstall from hp I still found all the stuff you said that were in the system32 folder and in the registry. The uninstaller HP RECOMMENDS DOES NOT CLEAN THE SYSTEM32 FOLDER OR ALL THE REGISTRY VALUES. YOU MUST DO THEM MANUALLY IF ALL OTHER ATTEMPTS AT REINSTALLING YOUR SOFTWARE FAILS. I deleted all files starting with hpq, hpx, and or hpz in both areas, rebooted computer, reinstalled software package downloaded from hp and than POW, a fully functioning working printer You did what tech support could not do. they are very good at giving you links to the hp website on how to correct the problem but no ideas outside of that. Any way thanks. It was a long process to get rid of the registry codes but it was easier than being online or on the phone with tech support Hi All
I am having this same msi.dot problem ,,even after uninstallatinon of my NEWc4480 printer I have found these hpq files but should I delete all hpq HPq HPQ etc files/hpz,,,,,,/hpx? the same .
I must agree HP support is rubbish ,and i have spent hours trying to sort this ,when the cd rom should contain all you need !!
I ask this question because Im operating on an Hp laptop and I am worried some hp files belong to the computer!!

Solve : Issues with a Video Game...?

Answer»

So I RUN a game on my computer (Final Fantasy XI), and it usually runs at about 30% CPU and about 80k Memory Usage, and it runs fine until my web BROWSER passes it in usage, then my game drops to 30k Memory Usage and times out (Auto-Disconnect). I don't get why it's being prioritized the way it is. If I don't have the internet open/if it never passes it in memory usage, everything works fine. I've never had this problem until about two days ago. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. 0. Computer Specs:
a. Service pack level of operating system
b. Make, model name and number of computer if brand name; otherwise make and model number of motherboard.
c. CPU type and processor speed
d. Total system RAM (in MBytes or GBytes)
e. Video card

1. PROCESS Explorer. Download and unzip latest version of Process Explorer from SysInternals (now owned by Microsoft). Run the executable.

a. Set Priority. You may right-click a process name from the "Process" column and use the "Set Priority" selection to adjust the priority of the process.

b. System Information. From "View" pull down menu, select "System Information" to open its window. This display will permit you to monitor system memory (Physical Memory) and paging file (Commit Charge) usage.

2. Gaming. Pardon my ignorance, but are you playing this game over the internet? Are you gaming online ? ? it's unclear by your post...
If so what type of connection ? ?

If not close the browser while gaming...Final Fantasy XI is online only, so we can eliminate that one. Thanx...not much of a gamer 'cept for the old stuff.

They did not ship CD recovery disks with new computers.Nothing happens when I do that .The computer starts as if nothing is pressed.I do get the BIOS with F1 or F11. I have tried the alternate access through the program tools and it is not there either. Is there any other way of accessing the hidden partition?I am wanting to try a destructive recovery.Whoever installed XP Pro could have formatted a whole drive and maybe you don't have recovery partition anymore.

Solve : Not Booting Up?

Answer»

Hi Everyone,
For a little while my computer has acted strange when running more recent games. It'll run them fine for a little while, then the monitor will go black and say "No SIGNAL." Today I decided to dust out my computer and make sure my graphics card had enough space to breath since I thought that may help with the problem. Unfortunately now when I boot up up the monitor never gets a signal. The monitor is a new ViewSonic, and the light always stays orange, it never turns blue. If I turn the monitor off and then back on, it just says no signal. Here is everything I did this afternoon:
Dusted using compressed air.
Took out and put back in the graphics card. Nothing was broken or bent.
Here's where I think I got in trouble- I thought I may as well apply a new coat of thermal paste to my CPU, so I took out the heatsink/fan. I applied a new coat of thermal paste and tried to put back in the heatsink/fan. Unfortunately, one of its legs broke a bit, but I got the other three in snug. The actual fan part of the heatsink/fan has been broken for about a year, so I just completely removed the fan from the system.
When I plugged it back in, it wouldn't start up at all. It was kind of like a car that won't fully ignite. The FANS would start for a second and then stop. I tightened everything down again, and now all the fans/lights come on (there are no BEEPS), but the monitor isn't getting a signal. I am completely at my wit's end and not sure what to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Here are my system specs:
PENTIUM 4 2.8 GHz
Intel D975XBX REV 304 motherboard
Radeon 1900 XTX GPU
600W Power Supply
4 GB RAM
250 GB HD
DVD-R/W drive
A wireless card (which I don't use)
Soundblaster X-Fi sound card
I can't remember what heatsink/fan I have.
I have various size fans in the back, front, and side of the case.
Again, thank you so much for reading this, I really appreciate any help!
Talgian...When you replaced the thermal paste, did you remove the old stuff first?

When you were working inside of the computer, did you take anti-static precautions?

Have you tried reseating your video card?

Do you have another computer that you can test that monitor on?

Do you have another monitor that you can use to test with that computer? You apparently have a newer video card than the original one that came onboard when you first got it. Try connecting the monitor to the old video port.

If it works, then the video card is not seated correctly, you shorted it by not grounding yourself to the PC or it passed on...

Solve : error 10F8060002?

Answer»

Hi - I think I have a hard drive problem but wanted to check here before I go buy a new one. My daughter's Toshiba laptop contracted a number of viruses and trojans so I decided to just wipe the whole thing and start from scratch. This is a Satellite M105-S3041 running Windows XP Home. This computer has a SYSTEM reload disk and so I tried running it and selecting the "restore to out of box" CONFIGURATION option. Acts like it's working ok and then after appearing to run through the copy process the subject error message comes up along with "Windows - DELAYED write failed. Windows was unable to save all the data for the file \device\harddiskvolume2\windows\system32\cdfview.dll. The data has been lost. This error MAY be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file ELSEWHERE." I receive this error message for a number of files and then after I click through all of them receive the message "Recovery error. Please press OK to turn off the computer". The computer had been running slowly anyway even before the trojans so that's why I think it's hardware related (plus of course that's what the error message says).

Can anyone provide guidance as to what the most likely cause is and what initial steps I should take? Thanks very for your help.It sounds like your hard drive is bad.

You can try to download the tools for your drive and check for errors. You can get them from the drive manufacture's web site.

Also you can try to clean your restore CD. Just to make sure its being read right.

Last thing I would do is to buy another hard drive.

Solve : Can find start up button?

Answer»

I have Windows Vista. I went to open and when opened could not find start button or desk top icons. I am able to DRAG some of the icons so I can see them. The screen seems to be way to the right. Not sure what to do. When you press the Windows key on the keyboard are you able to see the start menu and/or start button? If you're using an LCD monitor and the monitor has a button on it labelled "Auto", press it.when I press window key I can not see start menu/start button and I also pushed auto on LCD still the same. I did do system restore but it comes up with an error message which says "an unspecified error occurred during system restore."Okay, well right-click on the desktop and choose properties. Go to the Settings tab (is that right in Vista? don't use it myself) and drag the screen resolution bar to the left a notch. Click apply. Repeat until the situation improves.Slighly, in Windows Vista it is called PERSONALISE (peronalize depending on American or UK) and go to display settings and adjust the SCREENS resolution, that seems to be your problem, if not, come back to us, and we SHALL run more diagnostics, if you can try running dxdiag.Try rebooting the computer into Safe Mode, it should reset your taskbar settings (assuming some third party program isn't taking control of it) and once you reboot back into normal mode should be fine.Could it be that the desktop area is set larger than the monitor can display?

I recall running into that before. It was a simple matter of changing the settings in Display in the Control Panel.Quote from: Quantos on June 26, 2009, 07:13:24 PM

This can be the problem try resetting your screen resolution or reset screen size from buttons on monitor."notacomputergeek" seems to be having issues? Hmm. Thats ironic.

Just kidding. I'm just wondering why it happened in the first place. Was everything fine when you last used the computer?FlashDrives, and t_blake07--

Solve : Recovery discs for windows XP (emachines) wont recover!?

Answer»

Hello there. ive had my emachines E4076 (windows xp, media centre edition version 2002) for around 3 years. It became cluttered and VERY slow so im deciding to USE the recovery disks and reinstall the operating system and clearing all personal files.

I used the operating system DISK and rebooted. I got to the menus which asked for disc one of the 2 disc recovery disks i burnt when i first got the pc. this started the recovery process. It then asked for the second disc and continued. at around 50% it then said instalation incomplete please insert disc one . I did and it repeated the process. This went on 8 or 9 times so there is OBVIOUSLY a problem so i quit and restarted.

my C: drive is exactly the same as it was before. no problem BUT now the recovery drive D: has a changed icon (it is now a black chip image and when i open this drive i am presented with 2 files. System restore and a file called PROD which has no icon and is 1kb in size.

added: Details
RECOVERY(D:)
Local disk
File system FAT32
Free space 2.31 gb
Total size 4.65 gb

any advice on re-installing? You could try borrowing an MS XP CD...as long as the versions match and you have a liscense key for the machine this is perfectly legal...

Maybe a failing drive (yet i can burn and play disks without a hitch) and the CDs are perfect. they were burnt around 3 years ago and kept in a case unopened and safe until a few days back. Looks LIKE ill have to try and track down a XP media centre edition disk

Any more advice from peeps would be great!

Solve : I want to wipe XP off and install Vista but need help?

Answer»

I simply cannot get my laptop to work PROPERLY so I have decided to wipe XP
off and install Vista.......can anyone PLEASE walk me through the process.http://www.5starsupport.com/tutorial/vista-clean-install.htm1. Windows XP. If the operating system came "preinstalled" on the laptop and you're using the original hard DRIVE, there may be a "hidden" recovery/restore partition to restore the drive to its "shipped" state. Generally, this would be the operating system as it was "delivered" without any of the programs or data added by you. On the other hand, sometimes the manufacturer permits you to restore the operating system while preserving your user data.

For a nominal fee, some manufacturers will ship you the recovery/restore discs which may also be used to restore the disk to its delivered state.

If they're really nice, they might even be able to provide an OEM Windows XP Pro Install CD (better than recovery/restore discs), that may be used to reinstall the operating system.

2. Vista. Per the link specified by Broni, you should verify the laptop is adequate for Vista before "wiping" Windows XP.
a. How old is the laptop?
B. How much system RAM does the laptop have (among other considerations)? That is all good advice and I appreciate it.........is there a way to wipe the
system clean and still save all the Wordperfect applications and Media
Applications I currently have on it that were upgraded?

I have a Disc from Dell that says its for going from XP to VistaQuote from: wing seeker on January 31, 2010, 09:20:31 PM

...is there a way to wipe the system clean and still save all the Wordperfect applications and Media Applications I currently have on it that were upgraded?
1. If these are applications that "install" on the operating system, you would need to find and save the "installation" package(s) for them.

2. I'm not sure what options you have with that disc. I'll leave that for someone who's familiar with the disc.Dell UPGRADE CD's unfortunately designed to wipe the system and take it to Day One STATUS...
You will need to back up anything important to CD or another hard drive...
Programs cannot be backed up and copied...this will not work. They will need to be re-installed using the original CD's.
You can open the Dell CD in Windows Explorer and see what additional programs if any are included.

Solve : HELP ! "Error Loading Visual Styles" ...?

Answer»

Ok ... Couple of days ago I've installed "Download UXTheme Multi-Patcher" newest version and patched my uxtheme.dll ... After that I can't turn on any theme but "Windows Classic Style" ... Please help ... I've been googling for 2 or 3 days ant nothing ...

Win XP PRO SP3 5.1 (build 2600.xsps_sp3_qfe.090206-1316:Service Pack 3)
If you need my build ...Uninstall that program. How ? It's a PATCH ... Didn't your Uxtheme patcher create a backup of Uxtheme.dll? Mine did. Look in C:\windows\system32 for it. It may have a name like UXtheme.backup. If not, look for the right UXtheme.dll for your OS & Service Pack on Google and download it. Delete the patched file, rename the backup, and reboot.
YES ! FOUND "uxtheme.ubk", COPIED it to new folder, renamed to "uxthme.dll" and used "Replacer" to replace it with the original in C:\...\system32 ... Now EVERYTHING works ! Thank You !

Solve : Installing XP using WAIK from USB?

Answer»

I am trying to build a laptop USING WAIK. Some of the time everything works fine and the build completes successfully others it doesn't.

Cause: Within the diskpart utility the enumeration of the physical disks is fixed. The HDD is Disk 0 and the USB is DISK 1.
However the VOLUME LABELLING is inconsistant.
I need the volume labelling to be consistant because my scripts are reliant on knowing where each volume is.

Question: Is there anyway that I can make this Volume labelling a consistant process?

Any help would be magnificent.
Why not create the volume labels ahead of time ? ?Tried that, it's the order that they are ENUMERATED that is causing me ISSUES. Volume 0 can sometimes be the CD/DVD but other times the USB? I want to force it to be consistant in the order that these are listed.Volume 0 will always be the 1st HDD if there is 1 present...I've found that although logic dictates that Volume 0 is the first boot device, this is not neccessarily the case.

With the USB Stick in, the WinPE environment boots so that it creates RAM Drive X:\Windows\System32> It then runs Startnet.cmd.

This file runs diskpart /s the text file cleans the HDD thus removing it from the inventory and reletters the CD/DVD to T: and the USB to F: (Well that is what I want it to do).

If I look in diskpart and lis vol what I want to see every time is: Volume 0 T DVD-ROM
Volume 1 F FAT32 Partition 15GB Healthy

It's these parameters that keep swapping. I want to be able to guarantee that Volume 0 will always be the DVD-ROM or guarantee that it will be the USB, and not keep switching between the TWO.

1. Do you have access to a windows XP disc/ recovery disc?
2. Is it windows XP home, or Windows XP Professional?Need more information. EXACTLY what happens and at what point during the boot does it happen?

What LED up to this? What is different between the last time you booted successfully and the first time you didn't (new hw, sw, virus, error, etc).
