Solve : Clearing A BIOS Password?

Answer»

Please help us. We have a Dell Inspiron 1501. It only has 512 MB and we tried to upgrade it to a 1GB. When we put it in, our laptop quit working. We were told to run the set up button at time of restart (f2) But it has a BIOS Password and we do not know it. We were told to clear it by finding the dipswitch, but we have no clue where it is. Does anyone know where it is or how to clear the password so we can add more memory please?

[emailprotected]Remove the CMOS (round battery) from the MOTHERBOARD for about 30 minutes...then put it back in.

Make sure the computer is off and unplugged from any power SUPPLY...and keep yourself grounded.

Then reboot the computer. We could not find no round battery. It is There is a long battery and we took it out and put it back in after 30 minutes and it did NOTHING. Solve : Modem question?

Answer»

I recently (now, brace yourself) upgraded my OS from Windows 98 to XP. Now the modem that was installed on my machine back in 2002 was put in there to perform well with 98. it does seem now that my internet connections are not functioning as well as they used to. (Then again, I use a dial-up system.) So what should I do now? Get a new modem? Get a new driver? (Dumb question, I know!) My ISP OFFERS a hi-speed dial-up system that claims to be six to seven times faster than their normal dial-up for $15 a month as opposed to $10. Would anybody recommend that? Or should I take the plunge (being a rather thrifty guy) and opt for a $20 a month DSL?
Thanks for any advice.StickyR,One at a time.If you decide to stay with dial up then because you have changed your operating system it would be wise to go to the site of the modem mfgr. and download the latest drivers for it. They may even be a different driver than was used for Win98.That should optimize your modem back to best dial up performance.I did have an "accelerator" add on when i was on dial up (about a year ago) per the suggestion of my ISP at the time. I found no difference. In my case it was provided at no additional cost from the ISP.But no cost for no improvement is a fair price. Now having only recently joined the DSL world i am an enthusiastic promoter of that service. To me the comparison is when making fire--you can rub 2 STICKS together and eventually you may get fire. However matches are now available and are much more efficient and reliable. I would never go back to dial up.If i were to know what country your in i can make a recommendation to get the most for your dollars vis-a-vis greatest speed ,unrestricted use,and costs. But only if you turn out to be in the same country I'm in. Though i would suspect other countries probably have similar options.truenorthQuote

claims to be six to seven times faster than their normal dial-up for $15 a month as opposed to $10.
This is perfect example of BS.
Dial-up can't exceed 56K (practically less) no matter what. What they do, they cache web sites, you visit often, on their servers, so if you access it again, it'll load faster. But try new web page, and your speed will be same as before.
For 5 more bucks, you can get DSL, and there you'll see the difference.47.8 was the best i ever got on dialup...Good memory, huh? Up to one/10th....LOLThat's cause i spent so much time TWEAKING it i know the number by heart... My personal highest on 56k was 49 but most times it was around 38.My speed on DSL is generally from 29-52 kbps however more than rarely i do enjoy speeds between 200-325 kbps. Is that ever a treat when it happens.truenorthStill recall 14.4k?
I started with that thing, but since it was my first time on the net, I even didn't know "speed" word
The browser was called Mosaic - grand-grand-father of Firefox.
I had that 2 inches thick manual for it.

Solve : need to reinstall xp on my laptop but my dvd rom is broken?????

Answer»

Hi i need to REINSTALL xp on my wifes laptop but her dvd rom has given up. Can i reinstall from an external dvd rom CONNECTED to a usb or will i need to replace the onboard dvd player.
regards Stuart.I don't THINK u can do that, you should just replace your dvd room or check what is wrong like is it damage or something. Anyhow best luck.well depending on how old the bios is, you MAY be able to put a USB device in a higher BOOT priority than the HD. If that is the case, YES! You will be able to reinstall from an external USB DVD drive. If the MBoard doesn't support booting to USB devices replacing the drive is the only other option...

Solve : My laptop won't boot....have to use task manager to access programmes?

Answer»

Basically, when i load my presario compaq, it loads up to my desktop, but doesnt load up the start bar or anything, it just shows the picture background i have.
I can run programmes but only via task manager, it is just irratating that i cant have a normal desktop....
any ideas?
Could it have something to do with a virus or maybe lack of memory?
Thanks very much!Probably not a virus. Do this. from your task manager go to File...new task and type in "compmgmt.msc" Under the Event Viewer look for any RELEVANT errors under the "System" Category. SEE if maybe there is anything referring to a service not starting or a process terminating abnormally. If there are some errors tell us what they are. The easiest thing may be to run a system restore back to a time when you know the computer was working properly.C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\SysEvent.Evt
it says system error records and it TODAYS date, it says it is a system control manager error and is repeatedly seen when i switch on my laptop....
this is all such a FOREIGN language to me!
Any more ideas? amd thanks for the help!
Just out of curiosity is anything at all currently connected to a USB port on this computer? I guess you have already tried doing a hard shut off and rebooting with the same result?it isnt connected to a usb, and is a hard shut off just a shut down, battery out, leads out thing?
shall try that.

Also in ref to the "system restore back to the last known working time", how exactly do i do that from the taskmanager?
Thank you so much!
What Windows version? Does it boot to Safe Mode?computer specs pls
"rstrui" runs system restore.I am back! all probs resolved thanks to safe mode, a virus check, and some major removal of pics and videos to a external memory stick.....not sure what actually resolved the PROB but the main thing is it is AOK!
Thanks to all those who posted!
Nice going

Thanks for posting back.

Solve : Files locked after Canceled folder copy?

Answer»

Ahhhhh...

Ok, so when I was doing the Permission changes, none of the actual Permissions were ticked off. So I had control, but no Permissions. I checked the "Full Control" permission, and SAID OK. Now I can access the files.

That's done it. You guys had the right idea all along, I just didn't have the actual permissions ticked off for some reason. (Might be something that should be added to that take Ownership guide - if you take ownership, but don't give yourself permissions, you still can't do anything.)

Thanks very much to everyone. If you didn't get that message, it means, we're not dealing with permission issue here.
Files may be simply corrupt, so killerb255's advice may be your only option.
This may be a SHOT in the dark, but did you try Safe Mode, or Safe Mode with Command Prompt?Oh, I posted before SEEING your last reply, so....good GOING, man Quote from: Broni on September 13, 2008, 06:30:17 PM

Solve : Programs open up very slow?

Answer»

I am runni ng Win XP, Processor 4400+, 1gb ram, 122gb free space.
When I open a program such as word it TAKES forever to open. I have run scan disk, have defrag but the problem still exists. Can someone help me to clean up my computer or tell me what to do.
Thanks, AndyI doubt the problem is DUE to just slowness. It sounds like a service or something else is hanging up where it shouldn't. Go into your computer management WINDOW (right click on "My computer" and click on "manage") right after opening Word and check the application and system event logs under "event viewer" to see if errors are being noted in there. Also next time before you launch word bring up your task manager (ctrl+shift+esc) and click on the processes tab, sort them by "CPU" (this is done by clicking on CPU once or twice, "System Idle" should be the top process) and see if any one process hogs a PARTICULARLY large part of the CPU during the entirety of the time it takes to actually launch word. Welcome aboard

Was it always like that?
Get CCleaner: http://www.ccleaner.com/Are you runing AVG? If so try disableing it and see what happens with Word - I find AVG very invasive and slows down my system in all respects a great deal.I'm using AVG and I use Office 2003 and I've never had a problem with AVG causing computer sluggishness.

How do Excel and other Office apps work? Is this problem just with Word?Quote from: ianbell on November 28, 2007, 12:08:04 PM

Are you runing AVG? If so try disableing it and see what happens with Word - I find AVG very invasive and slows down my system in all respects a great deal.

This is inaccurate at best and a LESS than factual observation...
Please be careful throwing out generalisations such as the above without any documentation to back it up.

In the last report published there was only one AV that had a smaller resource/memory footprint than AVG and it certainly wasn't a free anti-virus program.

If you need the details PM me.I need a bucket of water over here cause we have a Patio in flames!

Solve : Intermittent Problems After XP Reinstall?

Answer»

I have reinstalled XP a few times in the last couple of weeks on a Philips computer and have had intermittent problems each time.

I think the problem lies with the motherboard drivers but I am not sure.

This is the motherboard.
http://uk.giga-byte.com/Support/Motherboard/Driver_Model.aspx?ProductID=1781

XP installs each time OK. However Device Manger shows that two drivers are not installed. They are showing in ‘Other DEVICES’ and are the ‘Multimedia Audio Controller’ and Video Controller (VGA Compatible)

Each time I have installed the Audio and the VGA drivers from the above link and Device Manager then showed no problems.

Unfortunately the intermittent problems then begin. I get messages about Windows shutting down to prevent damage quoting on different occasions Graphics Card, Hard Drive, BIOS and so on. Each time XP will restart and tell me that Windows has recovered from a serious error. I also get page file and software distribution faults.

Can anyone help?
Have you noticed it not keeping the correct time lately ? ?

Thanks but it keeps good time so I assume it's not the battery! But it's not retaining onboard device info so it could still be the battery. Many thanks. I will replace the battery and let you know how I get on.Changing the battery did not solve the problem

I had to reinstall XP again after I got the standard message that 'a problem has been detected and Windows has shut down to prevent damage to your computer'
Sometimes this message loops and the only alternative I have is to reinstall XP. Sometimes it doesn't loop and I am able to try and find the problem which seems to get harder the longer it goes on

Ths standard messages do not seem to give me a clue on how to solve the problem-the last two quote ACPI.SYS and PCI.SYS.

I found out I was getting a message before XP startup-'Primary IDE Channel no 80 conductor cable installed' I have changed the cable and hope this will sort out the problem.

Am now in the process of reinstalling XP for the SIXTH time

After the last reinstall I did not get any error messages after about five restarts.

I thought it must have been the cable and I had cracked it.

No such luck

I have just switched it on again and got a 'kernel data in page error'

I will now download Memtest and HD diagnostics as you suggest. Many thanks for you help.
Looks like it is the memory. I have never used Memtest before but from what I can see it must be in a bad way

The WallTime is showing 11mins no passes and 205 errors Yep...it's the RAM.
But just in case before you go spend your hard earned memory re-install your MBoard drivers just in case.
Then do a few cold boots and re-boot and re-run MemTest.

Let us know.

P.S. How did the hard drive test come out ? ?Quote from: patio on November 28, 2007, 09:33:06 AM

P.S. How did the hard drive test come out ? ?

I had two 266mb sticks of RAM installed and ran memtest with them both in the computer. As XP can run with 266mb I took one of them out and did the test again with the same results. However when I put the other one in I got no errors

I have not had any problems since then (using the good stick) and have loaded firewall, AV and the rest!

Hope the hard drive test is not now required. I will let you know if it is!

Many thanks for your help and assistance.I neglected to mention running the test with multiple sticks...sorry 'bout that.
That means you can still use the good stick and good job figuring that out on your own.

Thanks for the Crucial tip.....their on-line scanner has told me what I need

This is the third time I have reinstalled XP. The first two times I was able to install without any problems. I have learnt the most with this one but I still do not understand the driver problem.

Is there any difference between Microsoft drivers and Manufacturers drivers? I read somewhere that XP has its own drivers for everything over a year old. Why did I have so much trouble with the motherboard drivers on this reinstall when I had no problem with drivers on the other two installs?

Thanks again for your help....I think the machine would have been out the window by now without your advice When it comes to drivers i always prefer the Manuf. over any others...which is why i never do driver updates thru Windows.
After all we've all seen what they can do with a few lines of code...imagine what a driver looks like after they're done with it.
Glad we could keep that machine from going out the window and best of luck with it down the road.

p.s.s Keep in mind also that the bad RAM could also be responsible for the botched installs so it's nothing you did wrong.

Solve : registry hack?

i was messin around in the registry and i changed something so it changed the am and pm to what ever you wanted as long as it was 8 digits well i dont like it i liked the am and pm better and i looked but i couldnt find it again any ideasSystem Restore.im not that desprite it takes to longThen it must not be that annoying...but its still kinda annoying so if anybody happenes to KNOW tell meAll SYSTEM restore does is reset the registry to the time you choose.

Don't get it confused with reinstalling windows or anything else. It is just rolling windows back to a certain time that you choose. Thats it!System Restore doesn't take that long...yes but im lazy and dont feel like itQuote from: EVILFANTASY on September 13, 2008, 04:53:56 PM

Solve : BSODS?

Answer»

i got 3 i just got one then i restarted got another then booted into safe mode and uninstalled the soundcard drivers for the onboard becuase i have a pci soundcard that was plugged in the whole time but no drives so i just installed those today (onboard was installed aready) it seems that wasnt the prob cause i got another it said
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
Stop: 0x000000D1 (0x00000000, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0xB99B35C0)
cmudax3.sys - address B99B34C0 base at B997D000, Datestamp 477B4627

i thought it was the ram so i did a memory test using that mem86 thing there were no errors after the 3rd BSOD was when i downloaded the iso and BURNED it and then i RAN the mem test and i didnt get a bsod scence this is the blue screen of death and u can't do anything but u have to reinstall windowsi thought about that but i really would not like to i guess ill have to though cause combat arms is stupid and wont work eitherQuote from: NEO on September 14, 2008, 02:06:37 PM

this is the blue screen of death and u can't do anything but u have to reinstall windows

I think you need to spend some time honing your computer background skills before advising here...
This is the 3rd person at least you have suggested a Windows re-install to and there may be others...
Remember this is a Help Forum.
One answer does not FIT all situations.look i told u u can make a repair windows with the CD or u can reinstall it with the repair option u won't loose anything from your computer but with reinstalling without format u will loose only the program with format u will loose everything in the partition where u have installed windows it's your choice. yes patio but if u find another solution tell me ok?Please re-read my post and don't over-react...it's constructive criticism at best. Not all BSODs are resolvable by reinstalling Windows. Typically that'll only resolve OS corruption or if the BSOD is virus-related and trying to remove the virus by conventional means is too time-consuming.

In this case, it's a driver problem:

cmudax3.sys

That's a sound card driver. Most likely to the OP's onboard sound.

I don't think he uninstalled the driver properly. Otherwise, the BSOD wouldn't reference that particular file.

OP: Go back in Safe Mode and uninstall the audio drivers to BOTH your onboard AND your PCI sound card.

If you're not going to use your onboard sound, then go in the BIOS and disable it.

Otherwise, go online and download the latest drivers for whatever sound device(s) you're going to use.

for the thing for the repair they dont work with this copy of windows the repair thing gets rid of my *LEAGLE* key and when i try to reneter it it doesnt work for some unknown reason
and i uninstalled the sound driver from add/remove programs (onboard) and i tried to disable it but there seems to be no option in the BIOS
EDIT
i just googled the cmud thing and that seems to be from the PCI card better uninstall that

Solve : windows update "Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1" fails to install?

Answer»

the title pretty much sums it up.

The little balloon popped up in the taskbar, telling me I had windows updates ready to INSTALL.

So I clicked it and selected custom install, just so I could see what it was gonna do to my machine (always wise when dealing with Microsoft ).

after this, it said "initializing installation...Done! then, installing Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1...Failed!"

after that screen it went to a final screen of the installation, to show that one upgrade had not been installed (Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1).

So now, I have that annoying icon in my taskbar, and there's no way that I can see of getting rid of it. I wen through a couple of KB articles on microsoft support, but NOTHING that I could find seemed to fit my problem.

lastly, this is considered to be a "critical" update, so even if I go to the microsoft update website, I cannot check the "do not remind me of this update" (or whatever that box says, you know what I mean) box. So it will always appear as an update that I NEED for my pc.

Other possibly relevent info:
►Windows xp service pack 2
►no pirated sofware- so my key should be fine
►all other updates have been up-to-date so far, aside from this one
►latest versions of IE, WMP, Microsoft Office suit (2007)
►have recently posted hijack this logs and gone through a couple of known online scanners (LIKE panda active online scanner) and have a firewall and live virus scanner installed- so I don't believe that it would be any sort of malware doing this
►no other issues that I can think of.NET framework can be stubborn to fix.
First see if it is listed in Add/Remove programs if so remove it.
Travel Here for the Windows Installer clean up utility and run it.
DLoad a fresh copy of .NET 1.1.
Disconnect from the web and disable your Anti-virus program and turn off Windows firewall if it is enabled.
Install .NET 1.1I have several listings of microsoft .net framework, i will try to attach a screenshot.

not sure if this changes what I should do or not, so I'll wait for further instructions.

[saving disk space - old attachment deleted by ADMIN]The others can be left as is...the .NET frameworks are not cumulative as the Service Packs are so just remove 1.1...

I have two different computers, one with XP Home, the other with XP Pro. When I plug a USB device into the Home, it installs its drivers CORRECTLY and shows up in My Computer. it says it unable to find hard disk drive

More info would be helpful at this point...well thats all it says, i go to format go through the formatting menu then while the menu is loading it say unable to format because its unable to find hard disk drives. i think this happens because the drivers are mirrored so i mean theres not much more to it unless theres somewhere else i can look for why its doing it. but thats all i see is that part so unless im missing something theres not much more to tell

My main HD (the one I boot from with XP) is only a 15k RPM 17GB Baracuda SCSI as my primary HD (because it's fast) and I have a 300GB SATA (for storage) Can I have all programs store and manage data from the larger HD? IF so, how? I already have a couple of programs that do it but that was accomplished at set-up. Thanks!
RRYou mean install programs on the other drive?

You can do this by changing the FILE LOCATION when you are installing the program.Actually, I meant to have all programs (there are quite a few and would be very time consuming) on the smaller SCSI to store / retrieve and manage their data directly from the larger drive. That way the smaller disk will not bog down as it's doing now due to lack of disk space. I want to use the SCSI only as the Operating System disk and have the programs installed there (they all are already) but have them save and manage all their data on the larger drive. That way it keeps the smaller drive lean and fast. Is there a way to do this in "bulk" or do I have to enter each programs setup utility to accomplish this?I think you will have to uninstall the programs, and then reinstall them.
As for freeing up some space, perhaps this might HELP:

Download and Install
CCleaner.

When it is installed, run it and make sure the following checkboxes are checked.
INTERNET Explorer --> Temporary Files
Internet Explorer --> Cookies (optional)
Mozilla Firefox --> Internet Cache
Mozilla Firefox --> Cookies (optional)
System --> Temporary Files
System --> Empty Recycling Bin (optional but recommended if low on disk space)
You can check whatever else you want but you should know that whatever you check will be unrecoverable.
When you are done, Run the Cleaner.

Solve : Splitting a file on windows and merging on macintosh??

Answer»

I need a file splitter that will let me split a file on Windows XP (PRO) and let me merge it on OSX (Leopard). My 250 GIB external Hard Drive gave up on me today and I do not have a device big enough to carry it (closest is 2 gigs, file is 5 gigs), but I seem to have trouble finding a splitter that fills the needs... Thanks in advance.

SimiTry this: http://www.fouda.de/html/filesplitter/index.htmHmm... never thought of using java...

but anyways -- I figured lastnight in my sleep -- Why do I NEED to use the huge-arse .Rar file? I have the original files... So I'll just do it 2 GiB at a time. Lets hope my device works in safety MODE =P

Solve : Seeing icons under Windows ME?

Answer»

I've been using Win98SE for the past 7 years that's because I've had problems installing WinXP 2002. Anyway I bought a genuine copy of WinME of eBay last WEEK and I decided to give it a go over the weekend.

On Saturday I did a format and installed WinME without a problem but the first time it started up it CAME up with an Browseui.dll error. It said try a restart to fix the problem, I did this several times but the error was still there. Just clicking the mouse on the desktop brought the error back so it didn't work. So I put Win98SE back, old reliable.

My Problem Now.
So on Sunday I decided to give it one more try and it installed without errors and I can use it. The problem I have now is that I'm installing all my software back in and I use Imagedit.exe as my icon and cursor editor. So double-clicking on an icon and Image Preview opens it. Image Preview is neither use nor ornament. So I right-clicked the icon and from Open With and selected Imagedit.exe as default PROGRAM. Going back to an icon double-click on it the icon opened with the editor ok. So I install more software and I go back to look at some icons and the icon has changed on all of them to the Imagedit.exe icon. So I go back to File Types to see what is showing under ico and Imagedit.exe is showing. So I click the restore button to put it back to Image Preview and that changes all the icons to Image Preview icon.

In Win98 you could see the icon as a PICTURE, you just double-click on it and it asks what program you want to open it. Just select Imagedit.exe and the jobs done, you can still see the icon image and Imagedit.exe opens it, what could be simpler.

Does anyone have an idea how I can get Imagedit.exe to open the icons (well I can do that) and also see the INDIVIDUAL icon images? No one has any ideas then?

No worries I've put Win98SE back, so everything works as it should do.

Solve : Random Freezing???

Answer»

Let me know, how dirty it was...I have clean out the computer with compressed air which wasn't to bad (the worst parts were the fans and heat sink) the computer is STILL freezing up and the temp of the cpu socket running at 65.0C. The first time i booted up the computer after the clean it completely froze upon START up and had to reboot.Does this mean i need to replace the main board??Did you re-install the MBoard drivers after your last XP install ? ?
What make and wattage is the PSU and how old is it approximately ? ?
All drivers have been installed after a clean xp installation, the wattage for the psu is 450W (about a year old)

My specs are

Intel P4 3.06Gig (4 years old)
2Gig if ram (4 years old)
2 x 160GB HDD's (4 years old)
Asrock P4I65G Mainboard (3 months old)
Nvidia GeForce 7300 GT 512MB (3 months old)
DVD-RAM Drive (1 year old)

Have i got a wattage shortage??Do a memory test....

http://www.memtest86.com/

Ok i ran the memory test from memtest86.com after about 5 or 6 seconds the test crashes showing half of the screen black and the other half blue with parts of the test?Either the RAM is bad...or it's not SEATED PROPERLY...
As always remove all power sources when working inside the case and take anti-static precautions.

Solve : Only boots in safe mode HELP!?

Answer»

When I tried to boot my PC today it wouldn't get past the start up screen. It loads for about 30 seconds as it normaly does, but then the hdd light stays on. The hdd light was solid for about 10 MINUTES when I decided that it is not going to get any further and rebooted the computer. I tried booting into safe mode with networking which didn't work so I rebooted again. This time I tried safe mode without networking which worked perfectly. Because it worked in safe mode and not with networking makes me think there is something wrong with a networking driver. In safe mode I went to msconfig and checked /BOOTLOG and /SOS. I also looked at event log, but it only listed stuff from my safe mode boot. It did have many errors though. I will post them if you would like to see it. After this I rebooted AGAIN and this time I went to normal mode. Actually this time everything seemed to work until I got to the desktop. The mouse cursor stayed a hourglass and the hdd light was solid so I eventually turned it off.

It has been working fine for about a year and didn't install any new hardware.

Specs:
Windows XP Pro 64-bit Edition
AMD Athlon duel core 3.2GHz
8GB of RAM
2 SATA hard drivesI'd start with opening the case, cleaning everything with compressed air, reseat RAM, and all cards.
I'd also TRY to start with 1 RAM stick at a time.I really don't think any of that will help because I forgot to mention that it works with a Linux CD. It has internet and everything it normally would with Linux. I don't think it is a PROBLEM with the hardware. The problem is with Windows. Will it boot to Windows CD?Yes it does boot to a Windows CD, but if you are suggesting a reinstall or repair then that is not what I want to do. I PROBABLY could have done those things already, but chose not to because I want to fix the problem. Eventually, if it seems hopeless then I might consider reinstall or repair, but for now I want to fix the problem.

The computer usually locks up while booting but occasionally it makes it to the desktop. I decided to replace explorer.exe (made a backup first) with filemon.exe (a utility that LISTS all files being accessed). When I logged in it loaded filemon instead of explorer and it began to list the files that were loading. It locked up when it reached services.exe so that means it is probably a windows service that is causing the problem. I did a bootlog and I will post the results below. I also copied the errors I found in event log and some of them occurred more than once, but I am only posting one of each.

Sorry for the long post.

It looks like last two errors are Windows related, and Windows repair may help.
First two errors seems to be hardware related, in my opinion.
Second one, "atapi.sys" seems to indicate your optical drive.
I'd try to disconnect any optical drives, you have there, and see, if it changes anything.K, I unplugged the optical drives and turned on the computer and it worked. It said I need to reactivate windows in 3 days. I figured I would reboot once more after that to check if it worked a second time. It didn't work the second time. I am really getting annoyed by the inconsistency of the problem. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.As I said before, I suspect system files messed up on a top of optical drives problems.
If you can to Windows again, try running sfc /scannow.
If not, try Windows repair. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I FIXED IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Its been working for about a day now with no problems. The blue screen o' death appeared saying unmountable_boot_volume when I was booting up the computer. So I turned it off, opened it up, and plugged the SATA cable for the hard disk into a different port on the motherboard. That seemed to fix all of the problems I was having. The cable could have been loose or maybe the SATA port wasn't working properly. It's another one of those big problems with a simple answer. Thanks for all the help though!Nice job!!

Solve : Lost EVERYTHING trying to watch a European DVD........?

Answer»

Hey!!
I hope I can find some ideas on how to recover some personal photos and files from my HP computer. I was attempting to watch a DVD from EUROPE and finally decided that it wasn't going to happen. The next day my husband kept getting a program popping up (Windows Media Player?.....can you tell I don't have a clue??!!) The computer eventually crashed and we have not been able to restore it to any point before the 'crash'. Its like it's life has started over after it purged all my photos, resumes...personal files. We run Windows XP and the computer is an HP Pavilion 1626N, with the Windows XP Media Edition (that's what the label says). Help!! I just really want my photos back....any ideas??What happens when you use System Restore?
How far into Windows are you able to boot? Does it stop at some point?
Are you able to get into Safe Mode? The safest way to try and retrieve that data would be to pull the drive from that machine and hook it up to a working machine as a SLAVE drive. Then thru Windows Explorer you should be able to copy any files you need and burn them to a CD/DVD...

This would be a good time to start considering a regular backup strategy for your important data.I have tried to restore to a point just before the crash however the computer will only restore to when it re-started AFTER it went down in flames. Is there something I am not doing WITH the command to restore, like picking an ACTUAL date? The suggestion of removing the drive and running it through a computer that works is a good one that I could try, or am I missing something with the restore points?
Do not be worried about talking to me like I'm 5...I have already mucked it up and deserve to be patronised!!
I am going to try the restore point again...wish me luck!!
patio's way maybe be the only way, but before you go there...
Tell us more about that European DVD. Did you MAKE any computer tricking in order to watch it.
How did your computer crash? What happened?
Did you try to look for your files in some other locations?
Does your computer work OK, lost files aside? It appears my husband has done a system restore which set everything back to factory settings...sigh...oh well. At least I have learned what not to do ever again!! Thanks for all your help
Computer works better than ever!! Windows Media Player kept trying to install, but it looked really weird (very large grainy font) when I had the DVD in. Then it just went to black screen then blue at which pint the husband person hit F10 and apparantly we lost it all (at least thats what the HP tech says on - line help)

Solve : Startup redundancy?

Answer»

mmk. so about a month ago, my computer [e-machines t6412 with windows xp home edition] experienced a major problem.

It would load past the BIOS/Boot Menu Screen and into the screen displaying the safe mode, start up with last known configurations [or whatever] and start normally.

Whichever I chose, it brought me back to same screen. I tapped f8 and got to the advanced start up and each option brought me back to the identical screen, other than disable automatic restart on system failure.

it brought me to a bsod, and ADVISED me, if i was capable of booting, to uninstall anti VIRUS and whatnot,
i'm unable to start up. i read on a topic here, that if I post the error codes someone could help?

the error codes are as followed:

STOP: 0x0000024 (0x00190203, 0x82B7E290, 0xC000103, 0x00000000 )

if anyone can help out, this would be greatly appreciated.
i use that computer for music recording purposes, and whatnot, and it's REALLY got me DEPRESSED, because I can't seem to figure it out.

thanks=]

Solve : System won't Shut Down or Restart?

As of late my pc won't shut down or RESTART. It will clear out of desktop and will display the familiar light blue background with a message stating that Windows is shutting down... But it doesn't.

I have a Gateway PC with Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz; 2.79GHz, 1.50 GB of RAM. Microsoft Windows XP, Home Edition Version 2002, Service Pack 3. I use Kaspersky Security.

Please LET me know if I should post more information about my pc.

added after POSTED: I just spoke to my wife about this and she said hers is behaving similarly. We switched to AT&T wireless internest last weekend. Could that be HOLDING something up?Does Windows shut down in Safe Mode?Yes, it shuts down in Safe Mode. However, I didn't choose Safe Mode W/ networking. All right.

In Safe Mode, I suggest performing a System Restore to a few days before the problem started.

If it is, does it have a hard drive inside it?
Unfortunately, opening a laptop is more difficult then a PC, so it will be harder to tell. Consult your documentation for instructions on opening the hard drive bay. (You can listen for the harddrive as well)

Did it at ONE time have an operating system on it? Quote from: mom123 on November 29, 2007, 08:07:20 PM

There are a few things that can cause the dreaded Operating System Not Found error at boot: There is a disk in the floppy drive that is not bootable, there is a problem with the boot partition on the hard drive, or the hard drive has failed.

.....

Check the BIOS

Once you have confirmed there are no floppies or CDs in the drives that the system might be trying to boot to, get into the computer’s BIOS to make sure the hard drive is being detected. The key you’ll press will vary from computer to computer, but these are normally either ESC, F1, F2, F10 or Delete. Tap these keys continuously when first POWERING up the PC.

Once in the BIOS, LOOK for the Primary Master. There should be a hard drive listed here. If not, we may have a problem with the hard drive.

So, the main question...is your HD listed in BIOS?

i had a damaged profile on my outlook, but couldn't fix it through the normal way of creating a new profile through the control panel.

so i used the XP disk and detect/repaired the program. it fixed it but deleted all my email. is there anyway that i can get this back? when i logged onto outlook after i fixed it, the message popped up saying that the information on my old profile could be transferred.

how do i do this...is it possible? opened up control panel..only has one email profile so where am i supposed to access my initial account? What version of Office are you using, or are you using Outlook Express?

If you are using Outlook, and have Office 2000 and up, you should be able to go to Start> Programs> Find Microsoft Office> Microsoft Office Tools> "Diagnostics" (or some sort of repair option should be in there)

Run that program, it may take up to 15 minutes to run. It should detect office related problems, which the XP detect and repair feature will not find.

Does that work for you?
the easiest THING would be to go in and do a search of your entire hard drive (make sure you specify system and hidden folders too). Type "*.pst" into the search field (WITHOUT the quotes) and if any are found that are larger than 10 or so megs write down the path to it and then go into outlook and click file...open...outlook data file and from there add that "lost" pst file to your list. You will probably also want to set that pst file back to your default mail file. (and for crying out loud back up your pst file if it's so IMPORTANT!!)

...now all that I've told you will help you FIND your file. If your outlook installation or PST file is simply jacked then just do what Zylstra saidhey thanks!! i found all my files (and yes...i'm BACKING them up now).

Solve : Windows ME System Restoration Failure?

Answer»

I was experiencing problems with the computer not shutting down properly and subsequently not starting properly. I have a Gateway machine (2001), 1.3GHz hard drive and Windows ME operating system.

While attempting a system restoration using the manufacturer’s recovery disk, I received the following error message, “Drive 0 (or could be "O" - cannot really tell) is in a corrupt state due to a previous incomplete restore operation. The partition table of this drive must be erased in order for the ImageCast client to initialize properly”. The machine freezes at this POINT and I cannot go any further. I restart the machine by turning the power off, with the recovery disk in the CD ROM it prompts to LOAD from the CD ROM but, then gets stuck with the above message.

Travel Here first and have a look around...
You will need to use FDisk to rebuild the partition table before proceeding.
This guide will show a simulation of all the steps involved.
All that would be required is for you to travel to bootdisk.com and DLoad a WinME bootdisk file. This then needs to be extracted to a clean floppy so you can rebuild the partition and format the drive so the Restore CD will run.

Have a look and let us know how COMFORTABLE you would be performing the above....Thanks for your reply.

I have gone to bootdisk.com and downloaded a WinMe bootdisk to a CDROM. I'm assuming I can put it into the CDROM drive upon turning on the computer and it will read the program?

I have looked around in the "travel here" link per your response but, there are several options which I'm not sure which one applies to my specific issue. Could you please send specific next step instructions?

Thanks again! In the first screen it has the option to Display Partition info...you need to do this first just in case the drive has a hidden partition.
This would contain Restore files from the manuf. and we don't want to touch that.
Post back with that info. When I start up the computer with the WinMe boot disk in the CDROM I get the error message, "INVALID system disk, Replace the disk, and then PRESS any key".Did you follow the instructions to make the CD bootable or juset burn the file to a CD ? ?I just copied it to the CD, didn't know there was a difference. I will go back and try to make it bootable per the instructions. If you use Nero for burning or Roxio there are instructions there as well...

Solve : cmos setup fail-save defaults problem?

Answer»

In attempting to solve a booting problem, I set my CMOS to fail-save defaults and now all I have on screen is a half page of what is best DESCRIBED as a light blue, red and black woven type pattern, bottom half of the screen is blank. I don't KNOW if this is just a screen issue and everything is loaded CORRECTLY behind it or if it indicated that nothing has loaded or booted. Given how fast this screen comes up when I press the START buttom, I'm guessing these is nothing booting behind it. Any suggestions?WELCOME to CH.

Can you get back into the BIOS at all?

What Computer is this? (manufacturer and model number)no, can't see anything on screen except this bluey red woven pattern.
Can't tell you much about the system ( I was trying to fix my son's computer!) other then its from the local computer shop so probably built with various components. All I do know is it's running XP. If it's important, I can open it up and see what's inside.Quote

If it's important, I can open it up and see what's inside.
It may come to that, but first try your monitor on another computer or try another monitor on this computer.
(to make sure the problem isn't with the monitor)It's 2am here in Australia so I'll have to wait until tomorrow to try another screen and computer. I'll come back to you then.
Just to give me something to think about in the meantime, is there some way to reset the bios manually? I understand that a computer can't do anything without the cmos/bios thingie so unless I can reset it somehow I'm really up the creek aren't I?You can try removing the CMOS Battery (on the motherboard) for about 10-20 minutes and see what happens there.ok, should I try removing the battery now or be patient and wait until I can test the monitor in the morning?I don't see any harm in removing it overnight. Just make sure you unplug the computer before doing anything. I'll try it and let you know what happens tomorrow. ThanksAll right, Good Luck and Good Night.

Solve : Disappearing window?? What did I do??

Answer»

Hi Guys,

I found this site surfing for help with my problem. I don't remember how long it's been but I have just dealt with it forever it seems. OK here's my problem. When I open a new window in IE and if I move the cursor outside of the window unless I enlarge the window, it disappears to the taskbar. So when the window is small the way I bring it back up again is to hit Alt +Tab and it pops back up but if I'm not careful and don't enlarge it to FILL screen it pops right off again. Very much a hassle but have been DEALING with it. Does anyone know what I'm talking about. It may be a feature for the blind or deaf or something. I must have been playing around and changed a setting and have had this problem ever since. Now I would love to be able to go back.
Anyone know what I'm talking about or does it make any sense at all?

Thanks,
Robert
(MEGALADONMAN)Maybe, it's your mouse. Did you try different one?Hi,

No I know it's not the mouse. There was some setting because I was playing around and then it started doing it just like that. Thanks for your suggestion though.

Rob I CHECKED both Accessibility Options in Control Panel and also Mouse settings in IE...didn't see anything that describes your BEHAVIOUR...
Any add-on toolbars installed ? ?

Another thing you can try is go to Device Manager and right clik the Mouse and un-install it...re-boot and Windows will automatically re-install it.
Perhaps this will clear up the issue.Go here:

Solve : Videos Appear Brighter?

Answer»

All out of a sudden, my videos appear brighter than they NORMALLY would.

DivX, Xvid, all appear brighter than normal.

I'm using Windows XP SP2.
Pentium IV 2.8Ghz
1GB RAM
7600 GS
I use Kaspersky Internet Security 6.

I don't KNOW why out of a sudden, all my videos appear brighter than they normally would. Videos in game have no problems though.

VLC, Media Player Classic, Windows Media Player, all play brighter than normal. However, when I change Video Output Module in VLC to OPENGL Video Output, the video appears normal...

When I change it back to DirectX Video Output, they appear brighter than usual again.

Anyone please help?

Could it have anything to do with Crysis or Gears of WAR? The problem happened right after I installed these two games.

Could the problem lie within DirectX or perhaps the new NVidia driver I just installed after being pestered by Gears of War?Welcome aboard

Did you try System Restore?I did not save a restore point. Sad.You don't have any Restore Points listed?Ummm... nope.Try re-installing the video drivers.
Try the monitor on another computer.
Double check the settings in Control Panel.Depending on the card and monitor you have, the color heat (kelvin) can be CHANGED from the monitors OSD, and the gamma setting can be adjusted from the cards utility. The monitors brightness and contrast can often help to "smooth" these settings. Since these settings affect all colors, a little tinkering might be necessay to stike a "happy medium". None of these settings should cause any damage, just pay attentention to "what" and "how much". And you can always revert to "defaults".

Solve : desktop background disappears over and over?

Answer»

I'm running XP professional. I was unpacking a file the other day with PowerISO and while this was going on, my desktop background disappeared and then reappeared and then disappeared completely. So I just turned the computer off, started it back up and now the background continues to do this. now you see it, now you don't. you always can see and move the mouse cursor though. if I have a menu or control panel or the my computer window OPEN, then these will disappear when the background disappears, and will not reappear when the background reappears. other program windows will STAY open however, but they get deselected (not sure the right word), meaning, for instance, that if i have word processing program open and am typing, I will have to keep clicking back onto the window each time the background disappears in order to continue typing. I've run McAfee's virus scan, run the microsoft malignant software detection and removal program, and neither of these indicate that I have a virus. I've also checked the device manager for my graphics card and it indicates no PROBLEMS. If anyone has ever heard of anything like this, please let me know because this is becoming extremely FRUSTRATING. I'm sorry if this question is not in the right category, I just had no clue where to put it.
Thanks.Welcome aboard

Was that PowerISO file legal? Where did you get it from?

Restart your computer, and start tapping F8 key....but try System Restore first.

What security programs do you have on your computer? Firewall, antivirus, antispyware...This, unfortunately, is the sort of trouble that downloading torrents can get you into. Most people assume that it's much safer than downloading via P2P software such as Limewire...although it is somewhat safer, it is far from being completely safe. You always TAKE a risk when downloading software illegally. And I've noticed that this particular program is actually often badly infected, judging by user reviews on various popular torrent sites. Out of curiosity, I tested three different PowerISO torrents, and in all three cases, the program came bundled with an infection.

Solve : deleting browsing history?

Answer»

I use Windows XP. How can I delete all my INTERNET browsing history? I have tried clicking on the Internet Options "Delete Browsing History." It deletes my temporary files but later when I go back to check, I still see a bunch of files still listed. I need to know that no one who CHECKS my computer will see my browsing history! I would recommend you use CCleaner it will take of all your browsing history. Just remember to untick the Yahoo toolbar when you install it.Been hanging out at the adult chat rooms again huh....

The history and the temp files are not the same thing. When you click delete history it clears the history of where you have been.

The web BROWSERS also has a temp folder that holds the images and other files that makes up each web page you have visited.

You will need to clear both the IE temp files and the History by opening the internet options and clicking delete files and delete history at the end of your use of IE. Remember that the temp files are added again as you surf the web.

If you open the internet options and than go to advance you will find a check box NEAR the bottom that says clear IR temp files when browser is closed. That may help you also.

Solve : Windows XP/Startup trouble?

Answer»

d**n right it is

I'm in the process of trying to remove it now. There's 1 last screw (the 16th one) that I can't seem to get loose. These screws are TINY. And my tiny screw driver is beginning to strip this one. I just can't get it out. It's holding the top of the case to the motherboard, which is mostly screwed to the bottom half of the case. In order to get to those screws to remove that BOARD and get to the drive under it, I have to get this top off.

Patio, can you give me a link to where you read about that? I'd like to see it to make sure I'm going at this the right WAY.

I've taken laptops apart before, and I've never seen one as difficult to get into as this one.

-=Update=-
Ok, got the screw out.

-=Update=-
Still struggling with screws. Seems the ones in the motherboard are as tight as that last one.The lack of available information on this hard drive has brought me to a terrible result...

It's a Toshiba MK6006GAH 1.8" drive (see picture). The connector is different from most normal laptop drives (I mean the 2.5" ones). Honestly, I think I'm screwed.

As you can see from the connector on this drive, it won't WORK with the 2.5" USB box I have. Any suggestions?

-=Update=-
Nevermind, I found there's an available adaptor for 1.8" Toshiba drives like this one.

[saving disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]Alright, I managed to get a hold of the adaptor I need. The drive is connected to this computer now and is functioning fine, so it must simply be something was screwed up with Windows. I'm running a virus scan now before I start copying FILES. When (or if) I find out what caused Windows to act this way, I'll post it.

...I just hope I can put this laptop back together when the time comes...

Found:
image29.zip - Trojan horse BackDoor.Ircbot.CBB
image30.zip - Trajan horse IRC/BackDoor.SdBot3.VEX
in23[1].exe - Trajan horse IRC/BackDoor.SdBot3.VEX
mcrsvc.exe - Trojan horse BackDoor.Ircbot.CBB

Ok, that's all it found. All of them have been reported as cleaned (actually deleted).Run AVG Anti-Spyware and Stinger on there just to be sure.
You may then want to DLoad and run Hijack This...save the log as a text file and post it in the Virus and Spyware section so our Resident Guru's can have a look...

DO NOT let it fix anything until advised...That won't be necessary. The only files she needed from the drive have already been backed up and the drive is being formatted at this very moment. This computer is tighter than Ft. Knox, and nothing raised an alarm while copying. As soon as the format is finished, I'll begin the wonderful process of trying to put this laptop back together.

-=Update=-

Laptop is back together. Seems to be working alright so far, beginning the restoration of the system.Excellent news QUAXO and you are to be commended for your sticktoitiveness....

Laptops... Well, it's back together and working fine now. No problems at all. Thanks for the assistance!

Solve : problem with the copy command?

Answer»

I added a hard drive as a slave to my computer for sharing files on my home network. I'm just messing around trying to see if I can copy a file from that drive (D) to the desktop of the C drive using the command line and nothing I've tried will work. It either tells me that my "syntax" is not correct, or tells me that it cannot find the specified file or folder.

So far this is what I've tried:

copy D:\path\file.rtf C:\DOCUMENTS and settings\my name\desktop

I've also tried copying while in the D directory and that doesn't SEEM to work either. Right-clicking on the command prompt and running it as Administrator doesn't HELP any, either.

The drive IS available, is SHOWS up in My Computer and in Disk Management, so I know the computer is recognizing it

edit: does it make any difference if the READ ONLY attribute is set on the parent folder of the file I'm trying to copy? The file itself doesn't have the READ ONLY attribute set, but the folder that it's in does.

copy D:\path\file.rtf "C:\documents and settings\my name\desktop\file.rtf"

I'll be damned, it worked like a charm! THANKS

I tried first without the quotes and then with the quotes.

What the deal with the quotes? Why won't the command work without them? The computer reads until the first space without the quotes.....

The quotes tells the machine to read everything between as one thing.....

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, illumination!

According to this:

ASP.NET Machine Account is created when the Microsoft .Net Framework 1.1 is installed onto a Windows XP machine.

Nothing to be worried about. Moving over to Microsoft Windows.Hey Dudeoxide!

I need ur assitance! With REF. to your suggested Microsoft Article, as soon I uncheck "Use USERNAME & Password to use this system" (Run>>Control userpasswords2)& click OK, it comes up with a window with Username of Administrator & asking me to punch in Password(& its confirmation)!!??

Once I have unchecked that option, why does it again prompting me to enter something for Pwd?!

What should I finally do to REMOVE the ASP.Net account from my System? No, don't remove it. It's part of Microsoft Framework 1.1.

As for control userpasswords2, uncheck the box and press OK. If it prompts for a password and you haven't set one, leave it blank and press OK.

Solve : Question on re-installing windows xp?

Answer»

Will doing a re-install of windows XP remove my program files or make them not work?Reinstalling Windows XP will format your Harddrive and will only RELOAD Operating System files. So yes, you will lose your programs. They will not work because they won't be there.

However, if you want to keep your files (pictures, documents, and such) will MUST save them to EXTERNAL media before you begin the installation. External Media may include a USB thumb (flash) drive, CD, DVD, Floppy disk, external harddrive....you get the idea...After installation is complete, you simply reload them.

As far as your programs are CONCERNED, you would have to reinstall them after the Windows XP installation is complete. There's another option actually...
