Solve : reinstaling windows?

Answer»

well were do i begin. I have been having VIRUS problems for about a week now and they seem to have died down(was a WIN32:tiny and others ) but they kept creating new ones and my anti virus software could not get the originals even in safe mode. anyway for some reason the virus got onto explorer.exe and runddl32.exe and my avast deleated them for some reason. I was able to get the explorer back as i copied it from my laptop but it didn't seem to have the rundll32.exe for some reason. so i decided to reinstall windows to fix the HOLE thing but i got a ERROR. C:\$WIN_NT$.BT~\aryjycnk.sys was missing or something and i have been searching the internet but i cant find one thing one the matter that helped me. Could you tell me how to fix this or is there nay other way to get back rundll32.exe?What flavor of Windows is this and how are you attempting to re-install ? ?
Is this a MS Windows CD or a manufacturer's restore CD ? ?
One easy thing you can check in the meantime is to make sure the CD is free of smudges or scratches. Clean it gently with a lint free cloth...
Post back with your other info and we'll go from there. Its microsoft windows sp2 cd. Av been shut out of pc now and only way i can reinstall it is from boot up but its coming up with a file is missing n then restarts pc back up.i got this virus before you, think it's CALLED w32.hakaglan.B?it's keep duplicating you folder >:(then i use avira,it's now fine.about the rundll32.exe,i copy it from another computer, haha, don't know if it's effecting my pc but it's still fine,i even try google it and find it..

Solve : Software/Hardware???

Answer»

Hi everyone – I hope that this does not make everyone as nuts as it is making me; however, I really am uncertain as to whether I am dealing with a software (OS) or hardware problem. Briefly, these are the issues I am encountering: very slow and often very unstable operation regardless of which application I am using; USB ports fail and then just start working without any intervention; ditto for the DVD/CD drives; system locks up and must be unplugged in order to reboot – Ctrl/Alt/Del does nothing, the system only beeps when this happens; attempts to launch and use more than one application – regardless of ap – at a time results in extremely slow operation and system freeze; error messages regarding lack of memory occur when I attempt to launch any second software while running Photoshop or MS Word.

System specs: Dell XPS 400; 3.2 GHz; 4 GB RAM; OS=Windows XP Pro –Service Pac 2;
Software loaded: MS Office Pro; Adobe Photoshop CS3; Adobe Bridge; No games other than those included with Win XP
Antivirus/Firewall: Norton Internet Security with Virus Protection and Anti-Spam; Spy and Ad BOT; Qurb Anti Spam. I perform regular (twice weekly) updates of all this software.

I have attempted the following in my effort to solve these issues: defragmented the hard drive; Ran Dell Diagnostics from the DOS Setup menu – this did not identify any issues. Uninstalled and then reinstalled the OS and application software. None of these actions made a difference in the system performance.

I will very much appreciate any feedback and/or advice that anyone can offer. This is driving me crazy since I really need my computer for my work as a writer/photographer. I am NOT a computer expert, so, please, understand if I seem a little dense about some things! Thank you.

Oh - I'm posting this to both the software and hardware forums. I hope that this is alright.
It initially sounds like it could be a memory problem.

Check all your memory sticks are seated correctly in the socket.

If the problem still occurs remove all the memory except one stick and try it with that. Then keep changing the memory to test one stick at a time. Hop[efully you will then FIND the one that causes the problem.

Try this and LET us know. We will take it from their if this doesn't solve it.nice looking comp. Does the computer start up ok in windows?2 things i would try...
1) Replace the CMOS battery...part# CR2032 about the size of a dime located on the MBoard...

2) Borrow a known good PSU of the same WATTAGE or greater than yours and swap it in there for a reasonable amount of time and take the machine thru it's paces...if things improve you need to replace the power supply.

p.s. Do yourself a favor and don't buy one of those 25 dollar specials...Thank you all for responding and I apologize for taking so long to respond myself - I've been on a job that took two days longer than anticipated.

On the idea of memory being faulty: I have removed both SIMMS and reseated them. I have also removed one SIMM and run on the remaining one and this made no difference. I have also run a program called PCPITSTOP that is supposed to id faulty RAM and it did not find an error. The system does start okay - at least some of the time. Other times it seems to hang up after going through the initial startup process and coming to the final blue screen prior to presenting the desktop screen. When this occurs, I reboot and generally it boots fine into Windows.

Patio - I apologize, but I really don't understand what you are suggesting for me to try. I'm not a PC expert by any means and much of this is beyond my level of comptence.

Anyway, I keep trying to work on this thing and to resolve the issues, but every DAY it seems to get worse. Eeeeee!

Thank you, again.Download, unzip, install and run Everest Home Edition
Everest

Select Computer>Sensor from the left hand screen and check your temps.Actually even if you have never done it these procedures are not very difficult...
Possibly you could enlist the help of someone you may know that has done it a few times to assist.

Here is what the CMOS battery looks like:

As to swapping out the PSU it's a little more involved but not a daunting task...
Just take your time and see where everything is connected. Most connections will only go in one way so if you look carefully it should be easy to do it properly the first time...

As always when working inside the case make sure all power sources are unplugged and take the neccessary anti-static precautions.

Solve : Partion and reformat?

Answer»

Is it possible to make a new partion on my hard drive, move all the files ONTO that partion, reformat the original partition and then move the files back onto it? Yes but you need to be clearer on what your goals are here...
If it is just data files you are concerned with this is no problem at all...
If you are thinking of Programs and an operating system i.e. Windows and everything else on the drive then it becomes a LITTLE more complicated.
There are many options including how you want to do it....or making an image of your drive as is and then wiping the drive and re-imaging etc.
There is also the method of just backing up your data to CD/DVD as well and then doing the same thing...

So let us know in detail what you want to do and hopefully we can steer you in the right direction.

BTW Welcome to CH.It's just data files, no programs or anything like that. That's too complicated. I'd just like to be able to BACKUP my files without having to buy any DVD's, I have a lot of CD's but they aren't large ENOUGH for all of my files. It'd take all day to burn them all to the discs.use partition magic, but i think it's not freeware
or this one
http://www.download.com/Paragon-Partition-Manager/3000-2248_4-10656686.html?tag=lst-0-1You don't have to buy or look for any partitioning software...it depends on what operating system you are using.

XP has a a Disk Management program you can try:

1) To open Computer Management, click Start, and then click Control Panel. Double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Computer Management.

2) For information about using Disk Management, in Computer Management, click Help on the Action menu.

I hope this helps...Free Paragon-Partition-Manager might still be available here..

(With thanks to Patio for his earlier post)Should be available til November... but act quick just in case.I've heard some horror stories about losing data by using partioning tools although I've done it many times myself (LINUX) without a problem.
I'd suggest backing up any data you are not prepared to lose.

Solve : Random Errors popping, Not letting me upload pics?

Answer»

Hey guys, I was just wondering if someone can help me with this problem, Everytime i close any PROGRAM i get an error about it, or sometimes a random error POPS up by its self. I tried running NOD 32 to scan for Virus and Spyware Doctor for Spyware. I have 2 screen SHOTS of 2 random errors.

Also, when i tried uploading this picture to imageshack, or even tinypic, my browser would just close when i selected the picture and hit open. I had to upload this to my website.

any help please?

thanks, Mario.See if there is a new driver for your LAN? Even if there isn't Download the newest version, uninstall the current driver, reboot, and reinstall the driver. Usually the new driver will be an .exe file so if Windows comes up with the new Hardware Found message, cancel it and click the .exe file to install the driver.
It sounds as if the RAM is not being released on the closing of programs...are there any Norton products installed on this machine ? ?How much ram do you have ?

Open up that PC, make sure you are "grounded/earthed", and remove the memory-sticks. clean the contacts with an eraser and blow away the remnants. Reinsert the memory. Restart PC.

If you still have problems, go to http://www.memtest86.com/
and download/run that memtest (preferably over a longer period

This behavior occurs because the operating system does not allocate a large enough buffer for the maximum string length permitted. When the data is greater than the buffer size, the Winlogon service terminates abnormally and your computer generates the error message to resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows XP

Gibberish. RAM is cleared on every restart and shutdown because it can't store data without power, not because the computer actively clears it.are there any other suggestions?Have you tried memtest yet?I love it when we have to re-suggest things...Quote from: patio on September 06, 2007, 06:52:44 PM

Solve : Program shortcut help! XP?

Answer»

XP Is there a way to automatically OPEN a PROGRAM without CLICKING an ICON to open the browser and then another icon to open the program?
Thanks...look under Properties and you can choose the Hotkeys....I first thought of two things... you can use variables/values in the shortcut OR you can make a shortcut but actually through a batch file...

example in a shortcut:
in the target of the shortcut properties
"?:\...\...\hl.exe -console -game cstrike"
or
"C:\Documents and Settings\pc1\Desktop\textfile.txt /iexplore"------------------------
example with a batch file:

@echo off

"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" "C:\text.txt"

cls

Solve : Windows xp running slowly, crackly sound?

Answer»

please, if you can help, please do! I dunno what to do!

Okay, well first of all, I'm 16 and this is my laptop. now, i've been scolded before about the amount of stuff I have on here, but I can't help it! I have a LOT of music files, picture files and video files (amv maker here) I always thought my laptop could HANDLE it since it has a vast vast memory. but a few days ago I couldn't LOG into my account. I started my stopwatch and by the time I was finally on my account and ready to try to get on the internet, 15 minutes had passed. and some sounds COME out crackly and BROKEN, like the log-in chime.

I panicked, and did all i could think of to try and get rid of the problem, I ran the Defragmenter (it took almost all night and most of the next day to do so) and a system scan. both were done and came up clean. The computer still runs slowly and crackles on login.

I tried to use my microphone on it as well and my recordings came out garbled, cut off and crackly as well. it's not the microphone, which worked properly on my parent's computer.

I thought maybe I simply didn't have enough Ram or memory. I deleted a lot of superflous files and programs in the hopes that freeing up memory would allow the system to run better. No luck. My parents refuse to take the computer in to be fixed because they just finished paying for it a few months ago. I've had it for 2 years and it's always run fairly smoothly.

For most of the summer I haven't been properly shutting down, because the computer almost never turns off when i do it properly. the screen stays on the blue "shutting down" screen and doesn't shut off. could this have messed with the hardware or programming?

I'm almost positive I have no viruses. my virus scans have picked up nothing. i've done everything I could think of that would help relieve the problem and it's still there. I'm afraid this may be a hardware issue, some piece that's faulty or something, and if that's the case, I can't get it fixed. if someone could shed light on what may be wrong, please do! I'd really appreciate any help anyone could give me!

I will be needing this computer for schoolwork and research as school resumes, so I need to solve this problem quickly!

please and thank you!

Luckiybeckiy

P.S.

also, Windows Movie Maker opens, but any clip I put on the timeline goes BLACK and doesn't show, then shortly thereafter the program freezes. I don't know if this has to do with the above problem, since I know how unreliable WMM can be, but it's never done this before.Dont worry , just wait for sometime and your problem will definately be solved (a lot of light will be shed ), just dont worry and be patient, the guys will be coming soon. what's you computer specs?OS,RAM,Hard Drive Size?always give 15% empty space in your HD,have you try check your device manager?is everything ok?and doing stuff like movie maker do need a lot of memory. With more specific information about your computer we can help you get that resolved. If I had to venture a guess based on what you are telling me I would have to say it sounds like it could be hard drive. It may be a little too full. But once we get more specific info from you we can better diagnose your issue.

Solve : Win32/Virut?

Answer»

Our family computer is infected with the Win32/virut virus, and its causing some real problems.
Pretty much, nothing can be run in normal mode without becoming infected, and the majority of system files are infected so can't be used (task manager, regedit etc). Also the internet connection has been closed so nothing can connect.

I've been able to run some things in safe mode, Spybot, AVG Anti-Spyware, Avast to name a few, and none have been able to fix the problems, most likely because they themselves have been infected. I've tried Portable ClamWin from a CD, but this doesn't support healing of items, which is a concern as it could be a problem just deleting files with LITTLE means of replacing them.

There are some important files on here, so i would rather not reformat, and as its a pre-built machine the OS is an OEM, so the recovery files, stored in i386 are most likely infected too.

Any one able to help?

Specs are:
Windows XP MCE 2005
1.6Ghz Dual Core Processor
2 Gb RAM

thanks to all who helpI'm not too sure what to tell you for this one. So you've tried to run your programs in safe mode and they still can't clean it? Well I did a quick search on google for you and I came up with these two SITES that claim to be able to help you. I HOPE they can.

Solve : error message (performed illegal operation) when trying to log on to wmconnect?

Answer»

i installed wmconnect on my comp. windows 98. when i try to log on i get an error message(you have performed an illegal operation and the details say kernel32.dll at 0167:bff7al38. i have run scan disk, defragmented, reinstalled program and everything i can think of. deleted cookies, temp files. called wmconnect and everything they told me didnt work. the last piece of worthless ADVICE said i needed higher than ie6.2800, which is impossible because msn doesnt any LONGER support win. 98. please can anyone help.Umm could you please tell us what wmconnect is... because I'm getting a couple of different services and programs when I search for "vmconnect".that is walmart connect. it is a netscape serverIt may be because Win98 came before Wal-Mart...
Did you check the program requirements as to what OS it works on ? ?i dont know what an OS is. how do i check that? i am not too comp. savvy.Sorry bout that...
OS = Operating System.
Read the documentation on the wmconnect software and make sure it will run on Windows 98i have talked to the wmconnect technical people and they know i have windows 98 and they see no problem with that.however everything they have told me to do has not worked. OK if they say it runs on Win98 providing they know what they are talking about then it should run...
Are there any other problems with Win98 at the moment ?
Do other programs create error messages or just this ONE ?

It may be an issue with Win98 itself so POST back and let us know.

Is WalMart your internet provider ? ?i am using netzero right now. dont like it, but it gets me on line. wmconnect is the only program i am having trouble with. i have called them alot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! they have made several suggestions. none of which worked the last one was to update ie from ie 6 to ie 7, which i cant do because no support for windows 98. they gave me a bogus 800 no. for microsoft. i called it for three days straight it was a constant busy signal. the reason i want their service is because my husband likes it and has no trouble with it, but i really cant afford 2 servers. my hubby has windows xp. i am a senior citizen and we live on a limited income. anyway any suggestion would be appreciated. i thought aabout reinstalling windows 98, but i am not too comp savvy and really dont know how to do that or would it even help if i did.If you are considering re-installing Win98 then you have to consider what data you want to save from that machine and how you are going to do it...
Most common things to consider would be text files, photos E-mail content address books etc.
All these will be gone with a re-install so let us know...Have you tried using any other browser? Netscape or any of the Mozilla browsers should work.

Solve : == lost mouse ==?

Answer»

Don't want to sound strange but I still have a 300mhz laptop here Windows 98 that I thought I might just keep alive just to use old 98 hardware/software such as scanners.

The internet has gotten TOO BIG to still connect to such with this so just use off-line.(?)

I broke this thing out yesterday after it had been sitting around a few months.

Seems most all working AOK except a few error messages. The CMOS battery went dead and HATE to try to find it. (laptop) I re-adjusted clock.

My USB mouse's (also ps2) seemed to quit working so had to resort to using touch-pad on unit.

Cleaned the registry with that old JV16 program.

Maybe that was it ??

NOW I HAVE NO TOUCH-PAD MOUSE. (other options read above)

How does one do anything without a mouse.

Maybe SAFE MODE ?? So far pressed F8 when booting and still no safe mode. I get to bios with F2.

QUESTION: Is there a way to operate without a mouse ?? If I want to restore the backup of 'registry clean' anything POSSIBLE ? (I'm not sure this is the problem but...)
You're going to have to replace the CMOS battery in order to fix this thing...

If you're not familiar with taking a laptop apart and putting it back together...I recommend you take it to a tech.Does the CMOS battery matter ??

When the unit is on it does not need the battery (I don't think so) and correcting the time keeps time stable.

I'm no CMOS battery guru but have changed numerous in desktops and no loss of anything.

You guessed right as to changing. Probably 475,685 springs and gadgets and things you need to break to find the battery. Considering the thing has no value maybe I will try. Spend money..don't know....That's true...

I keep forgetting it's main function is just for system time...

You can use your keyboard to navigate...

You'll find yourself using the Alt/Ctrl and Tab keys a lot to move around...it's aggravating...but it can be done.Coltsfoot, you DON'T NEED to leave so many blank lines in your posts. It just wastes space and is bad manners to the reader.

contrex...I must apologize, as WELL, for the spaces I leave...it just makes it a little easier to read...Saviour double SPACED lines like yours are kind of OK, but those lines of coltsfoot's, they drive me crazy!
I'll try to keep them to a minimum...sorry I never thought 'spacing things out' were bad manners. As to 'server costs' it's gotta be zilch. The post about using keyboard 'very interesting'.I've been up all night-it's 8am-gotta get some sleep..

Solve : XP mpeg glitch?

I have windows XP SP2 and it won't PLAY mpeg files. at all. it just says they are 'corrupt or invalid.' As far as i know this has never WORKED, but it may have played them when i first bought the computer (i dont remember). I have K-lite codec pack, Cole 2k media codec pack, and AC3 filter installed on my computer and i suspect this may have something to do with it. Any HELP or suggestions on how to fix it?well,if you very sure you have all codec try scan for a virus maybe.my first thought was codec prob, since you mention it i go for virus
download avira, update & scan.Try downloading VLC and see if that plays your mpeg's.

Where are these mpeg's from?
What are you using just now to try play them?using windows media player 11
the mpegs are off a panasonic digital camera, and they aren't corrupt because I can use 'Any video converter professional demo' to convert the first 3 mins of each clipand I can't IMPORT them into windows movie MAKER either.
I rang up panasonic and they said they couldn't understand it because windows can play mpeg-1 which is what the camera software exports.Quote from: GX44 on September 14, 2007, 01:58:09 AM

i fixed it but thanks for the help. i used the k-lite codec pack codec tweak tool. cheers anyways.

Solve : Installing Genuine Windows XP?

Answer»

Hi,
im planning to buy and install Genuine WindowsXP Pro to my IBM Laptop,
currently install right now is not genuine and i WANT to receive some free update and software online from Microsoft but since not genuine it cann't update. My hard disk space is 12GB only, Pentium3 450Mhz with 384MB SDRAM.
Question are:
1.)is it easily to install the Genuine Windows XP Professional? what happen to currently install OS WindowsXP-NOT GENUINE? is it AUTOMATICALLY delete it?

2.)Plan to install to 12GB Hard Disk the Genuine WindowsXP then maybe soon want to upgrade the Hard Disk from 12GB to 40GB, is it ok and is it succesfully re-nstall the original WindowsXP to new install 40Gb Hard Disk?

3.)is it possibly to install the Genuine WindowsXP in 1PC but the Hard Disk is being replace for additional storage?

anybody can help.....1. You old copy will be automatically delete INFACT every thing on you computer will back to factory settings (yes)

2. yes

3. No sure what you mean For your third question. Are you asking if you need to have Windows XP installed if the drive is only going to be used to additional storage? If that's what you are asking the answer is no. You don't need an OS on any additional drives that are used for storage. All the above can be done...
In regards to your 3rd question all you would need to do when you buy the larger drive is to "clone" the 12G to the newer drive...there are a few methods of doing this but we'll wait til you're ready.

Solve : start menu dissapears right after I log on to my computer?

Answer»

I just got a new/used computer (Gateway media center).I set up my dsl with att/sbc Yahoo-I don't think this had anything to do with my problem-but after a short time of using my computer EVERY time I would log on under any name or guest just as soon as the start menu loads it dissapears.I checked the start menu settings and the hide box is not checked. The start menu is there in safe mode.Does anyone have any sugestions?ThanksIs it only the start menu or the tilte bar that comes with it? If it is the title bar as well it might be hidden just below the sceen or just out of sight of the sides. try moving the cursor around the edges. If that work then drag it back into POSITION. Hope this helps. the title bar, start BUTTON and menu, and icons, all disappear.moving the cursor around the edges dosen't find anything either.thankshi, when you WAVE your mouse where the taskbar should be does it re-appear? If so rightclick on it and select Properties then uncheck Auto-hide the Taskbar.

If that DOESNT solve your issue, have a look here (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q318027)
good luck! thanks-taskbar dosen't appear when I move cursor over it.Still working with the microsoft link.It appears media center 2005 is a little different than xp and xp pro.

Solve : Ghost Images When Printing?

Answer»

I recently installed new drivers and software for an HP printer. At the same time I received an Email and opened it. Ever since the Email text APPEARS whenever I'm printing whether a file or something from the web. Both a the Email text and whatever I'm trying to print result in a superimposed image.

I have since rebooted and shutdown the machine but the DOUBLE IMAGES still appear. Am running XP HOME with a HP DESKJET D1341 printer.

Anyone have any ideas?I would uninstall the printer completely and re-install it, making sure not to have email or any other programs running in the background this time. Thanks mektek,

Reinstalled the printer with no change. Turns out there was a virus, which after a scan and clean the problem disappeared.

Thanks for your time and effort.

Solve : Extremely large fonts in web pages?

Answer»

Hello Forum. Not sure if this is the right forum but here goes. My friend has extremely large(huge) print (fonts)when going to web pages. So big that even a bank statement page won't fit on the monitor. The numbers are 20 times larger than normal. Yet when she logs on all of the desktop ICONS and off-line features appear to be normal size. Screen resolution is set to 1024x768 but it sometimes defaults to 800x600 by itself. ? DPI is set at 96(default). The magnifier is off. The monitor is listed as her default monitor. This all began when she came in and noticed the monitor picture was at a 90 degree angle. Don't laugh but she had to turn the monitor on its SIDE to read it. Is this a software PROBLEM or a hardware problem. She has Windows XP, IE 7 Intel Pentium 4 processor. Verizon DSL. System Restore did not correct the problem. . This COMPUTER is mostly used for business purposes. Invoicing etc. Any help would be appreciated. have u ever try to reduce the text size?
usually its in view, text size..give a try..Could it be the video card that is burning out or is dirty? try cleaning itMaybe it's a problem with the graphics card driver. Do you know what type of graphics card her computer has? Thanks for replies. View was set to smallest! No effect except off-line work. Not sure I know enough about graphics cards and drivers to help her with that. I hoped System Restore would work . No Luck. Spyware? I used AdAware. Didn't find anything but MRUs. Nothing critical. Using AVG Virus protection. All tests show no threats. She did get an AOL notice of corrupt files. Could AOL corrupt files influence font sizes when she uses Verizon DSL?. These fonts are humungous. Set magnifier on 9x . That's what they look like. I am staying with my horse and buggy NetZero dialup. It is slow but at least I get there. Any other insights would be appreciated. Thanks again.Try holding Ctrl and using the scroller on the mouse to zoom out ? Does this problem affect Office documents such as word or XL ASWELL or just web documents?Quote from: Spero-T on September 07, 2007, 04:16:23 AM

Try holding Ctrl and using the scroller on the mouse to zoom out ?

this is the best optionIs Microsoft Magnifier enabled? Thanks all for feedback. Magnifier is off. Control+Mouse scroll only adjusts within 'View' parameters. These fonts are humongous. But only in web pages. I think AOL may be the culprit. Going to try and reload AOL(not for me !) I would delete and use Verizon ISP. But it's not my computer. Again, thanks for feedback.Once you are connected to the internet, it isn't necessary to use AOL, just use IE.

Solve : how to open Quicktime .mov file with Windows Media Player??

Answer»

I WOUND up using Apple Quicktime player to play videos after I bought a Kodak digital camera and the basic software was included, {or linked on the software disc that came with the camera, I don't remember which?}
I have a video that I shot and downloaded from that camera which is in apple quicktime .MOV format. When I try to open this file with Windows media player 9.0, I get a message "windows cannot open the file."
How can I change the .mov format to allow WMP to run the file.
Thanks.
MikeJust download the latest codecs....

Or try VLC media player; it will play any file any time.....

I have an old computer and there is not much space left to add any more programs. I need to keep Quicktime for my camera and seems like Windows is fine for most files I've downloaded from the net.

Thanks for the help!!!No probs but just to let you KNOW, VLC is a very SMALL program takes up very little space and work far better than QUICK time....

Its as simple as quick time and as good as media player....

http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Codec_Pack.htmI downloaded and installed the codec file but WMP still will not open this .mov file. Also, I cannot upload this type file on any hosting site I've tried. I need to re-format the file so I can. It seems like I did this a couple of years ago, but I can't remember how.http://www.download.com/3001-2194_4-10705471.html?idl=n

converter... That will work although I can't afford $25 right now. Maybe next week. Thanks for the link. I have it downloaded and installed, but it will only show a fraction of the file until I register. Ok sorry...

Www.download.com you wont find any full free versions but there is one or two that convert with no time limit or stupid adds....

just type in Mov. Converter SUPER is free and claims it can convert quicktime files to any other format. I say "claim" only because I haven't tried converting a quicktime file with it my self. It has worked great for the formats I've tried.

Solve : Need help Reformatting please...?

Answer»

I started having problems bout 3 weeks ago, comp just kept shutting off on me;didn't matter what I was doing at the time or if I was even connected to the internet or not.It will run for maybe 20 mins if I'm lucky then shuts off, won't let me restart it for 20-30 mins...

I have an emachine T6420 with a AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3400+
Hard Drive is 200GB & it has 1024MB of memory
I run windows xp version 2002,service pack 2
I use McAfee

I FIRST THOUGHT that I needed to reinstall windows xp (have a system recovery CD that came with comp,is only thing that came with it)...so I did (4 diff times)...took forever to do it each time cause it kept shutting down on me.I have tried to restart it in safe mode...when I tried it using windows xp media center edition,it told me that a \system 32\hal.dll file was missing...when I tried it using windows,it does let it go into safe mode, but it STILL shuts off.

I simply want to reformat it,so I can start all over...I'm going to assume it can be done,I just need some help it doing it so I don't mess the comp up worse than it already is...It's useless to me as it sits & I have already lost everything I used to have on it so THAT isn't an issue...getting it back to "normal" is my main concern. The ONLY disk I have for it is a Microsoft Windows Xp Media Center Edition 2005 System Recovery CD/DVD that came with it.

ANY help that anyone has or any suggestions on WHAT I should do will be greatly appreciated...

You may have a hardware problem - cpu, motherboard, PSU, memory. When you say it "shuts off" do you mean it completely switches off, just like if you pulled the plug out of the wall socket?
It sounds like its overheating. Did you check all fans? CPU, PSU, and any other case fans??

-Cheersyes,it shuts off as if u had simply pulled the plug on it...all the fans seem to be working properly,I have took the side of the case off & cleaned them, still does the same thing...I think you will need to take it to a repair place.
You may want to consider replacing the Power Supply...eMachines are notorious for using underpowered cheap PSU's...
But do yourself a favor...don't buy one of those 20 dollar boxes or you will be faced with the same issues.i think that u hvvvv given the time delay of the power options whjich is advanced in nowadays computers , just unselect the option, ur machine wont restart for ever , okQuote from: arummani on SEPTEMBER 09, 2007, 05:34:00 AM

Solve : Windows Me & pop up controls?

Answer»

Hi,
I'm not very computer literate - so please forgive my stupidity!
I have Windows Me and no specific pop up blocker. My PROBLEM isn't that I'm plagued by unwanted pop ups - its the reverse!
Basically, I log into a web page and it generates an additional screen - a perfectly LEGITIMATE screen that I want to view. However, my computer TREATS it like a pop-up and a message comes up down the bottom of the screen (not the top) which SAYS a pop up has been blocked.
I can't find anyway to view these blocked screens. Where do I find the pop up controls??

Solve : unable to access c drive?

Answer»

I'm having trouble with my C and E drive. I use to be able to access it by double clicking on it but now when I do that, a pop up appears and says “c:\ is not a valid win32 application. The only way for me to open it now is to right click on the drive and click “open”.
Is there anyway for me to fix it?You could try this...

Remove any autorun.inf files (may be hidden) from the root folders of those drives which you cannot open. Reboot several times.

i just tried this but it doesn't seem to help. any other ways?Almost certainly caused by malware. See here.

Good luckreally? well thank for the help.
i look though the link u gave me and i am pretty sure it not "a file is corrupt, bad, or missing", "file is not designed for your version of Windows" and "hardware incompatibility" so that only leave "file is a virus, worm, or other malware file'. but if that so than how would i fix it?
someone told me to try CREATING a file named "drive.reg" and put this in it

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell]
@="Open"

it seem like the right solution but it didn't seem to work.

Solve : Boot up screen problems?

Answer»

Hi,

I recently had a fully working PC running xp pro. The other day, I switched on my PC and the boot screen appeared for over 2mins WHEREAS prior to this, it only flashed for 2 seconds whilst counting RAM and displaying spec of computer.

The words LIVE UPDATE 2 appear on the top right corner of the screen which did not appear prior to this. After about 2 mins wait, a black screen appears and NOTHING happens. No CPU flashing at all. I stuck the XP install disk in and formatted PC and installed XP pro again. Everything worked fine until i restarted the pc and the same thing occured!!!

Anyone have any ideas as to how to fix this...?

Kind REGARDS,

MontyPossibly a corrupt hard drive, but I would not act on this wait until another member can confirm I assume you have an MSI motherboard, if so it seems to have stuck in a "LiveUpdate" which is a method they use to update the BIOS, this could be a faulty or damaged motherboard BIOS Chip which has been damaged by an interrupted update, but it is confusing that you were able to reformat and reinstall windows.
if the computer/motherboard is around four years old the battery could be on the way out. which would cause a reset of the BIOS back to the original date of production.
Thanks,

I will buy a bios battery, are all batteries the same dimensions for an msi motherboard? The computer is just over 4 years old. I am confused too that it let me reformat and create a clean install.

I will try a new motherboard battery and hopefully it will solve the problem.

Monty :-)

Solve : Help with my computers display?

Answer»

I woke up this morning and went to check my e-mail and there was all these pink squigally lines all over the screen and i could barley see anything so i refreshed my browsers screen it was okay for about 2 seconds then little pink lines started bloching all over the screen , so i went to google to try and get help and the black print on the letters are barley visible and i can barley make out any words when i try to read the sreen but when i first appear on a new page i can see clearly but its when i SCROLL down that all the letters start getting blurry! for some reason it only gets real bad when i scroll down a screen and that when everything gets blurry and bad.

Also when i try to play a movie in my real player ( or windows player) the video starts corrupting and starts freezing with lines all over the place!

I have tried updating my graphics card driver , i have tried xp's error checking i also tried a system restore but NOTHING is working. I am hoping it is not my graphics card that is broken cause it will cost alot of money , i am hoping it is only some kind of error.

My computer is a pretty much brand new dell with a AMD 64 +3500 bord and my graphics card is a nvidia geforce 7300 le with turbo cache with the latest drivers. Any help would be appreciative!!
It sounds as if the card may be failing or the updated drivers are no good.
First try rolling back to the previous drivers and see if it smooths out.
If not we need to go inside...
Remove all power sources to the machine.
Open or remove a side panel and inspect everything inside.
If there is a good AMOUNT of dust accumulated then you will need a can of compressed air to clean things out.
Use a QTip to hold the fan blades in place when blasting the dust out.

After this procedure remove the hold down screw for the vid card and remove and re-seat the card replacing the screw when done.
Leave the side panel off and replace the power connections and re-boot the machine.
Check to see all fans are in working order. If so shut down and re-boot.
See if the picture has gotten better...if not i'm afraid you may need a new vid card.
Swap the monitor out to another machine to make sure it's not the monitor going bad.

Keep us posted and Good Luck and Welcome to CH !

I searched MICROSOFT and found the info to download and install WUAGENT.exe, did that but I get the message I didnt need to install because it was already installed, the 2nd OPTION was to force install, can anyone explain to me where to copy and paste to force install?
ThanksSome of the updates may not have been installed because they require other updates prior to their installation...

Have you tried running WINDOWS Update and selecting those via Custom instead of Express?

oooo and carbon how could i check if its that my computer overheated?

Remove a side panel from the machine and place a small fan with the airflow blowing into the case...if the symptoms go away you have an overheating problem.hmm when u say side panal u mean the back of the computerOr the case...remember i can't see your machine from here...ahh yes my fault i forgot for a second i thought all computers will built same then i rememed more advanced ones PATIO and carbon have both got a good POINT.

Overheating will definately cause you're computer to shutdown randomly.

However, just out of curiosity, you didn't change your processor voltage through bios setup did you?

overclocking if you don't know what you're doing can be HIGHLY dangerous, and can fry you're motherboard, if you're not careful.

If your computer is overheating, then i suggest you buy a new fan. Quote

Let's keep it basic til we can sort this mess out.
2 threads and 4 days later and no further along.,,let's find out if it's heat related first and go from there.ok so i guess what i will try is removing back of computer with screw drivers and placing a fan therethe fans were not the problem i just removed the side panel and checked all 3 fans were workingQuote

This should be tested for at least a day.what do u mean by tested as in if it turns off anyway with the fan just turn it back up and try again?Basically open the cover of your computer and let another fan blow at it.
That kind of fan we mean is like a tower fan or SOMETHING you use to cool yourself off instead of an air con.

Another thing I should point out, just because all 3 fans are working doesn't mean the motherboard/Hard drive/video cards are cooling down from them....imagine it's summer, and you're really hot. you have no aircon. what's the next best thing?

A fan.

well, the only difference now is, instead of you that's hot, it's the computer.

same concept really. JXY

If you want to help then help out rather asking question to a 14years old boy.
JXY all threads were just confusing.

Boy get a fan and place it facing your computer after removing the side cover. Overload your computer by playing the game TOGEHTER with media player for atleast an hour and it shuts down then get back to us for the next level.

Solve : Excel 97 files?

Answer»

It worked! Using ISOBuster, I was able to get my files off of the CD. ISOBuster ALSO indicated the files were "open session". Subsequently, a neighborly "expert" determined that the CD's had not been finalized.

Why and how? My neighbor RECREATED my previous environment, Win 98 Se 2nd edition and Plextor, Adaptec, etc. He was able to download my backup CD's to an exernal HD. Indeed, my CD drive was controled through Plextor 2000. P-2000 also had Adaptec burner software bundled with it and was my burner software. It did not finalize a CD when saving to it. That was why I was able to use the same CD-R to write additional files to or to update current files and resave. If the CD had been finalized, I wouldn't have been able to do so, and I wouldn't have had to go through all this trouble.

Thanks everyone for their input and to PATIO for turning me on to ISOBuster. A GREAT deal for @$30.00.A CD that is finalised cannot be written to unless it is a re-writeable and is erased...
Depending on the software used every time you burn before doing so you need to check whether session burning or finalising is switched on depending on what you want...
Session burning means the CD is not finalised until you do so.I REALIZE that now. It is just like a regular music CD burner/player. You can record on one side (burner), but can't play it on the other side (playback) unless the CD is finalized after recording. Again, thanks, Patio! You're more than Welcome and stop by anytime...

Solve : computer timeline?

ok heres my problem i have a OPERATING systems timeline report due in a few days and i cant find very much info to answer the 5 questions for each of the 11 operating systems i need so ill write the answers down and someone please post a answer.
who developed and\or created the OS?

on what type of COMPUTER does the OS run on?

what type of interface does the OS provide?

the OS codename used while it was being created?

and what date was the OS released?

i need these questions answered about Windows NT, windows 2000, windows XP, windows 95, windows 98 and windows ME ok if anyone can help me out it would be greatly appreciated.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Windows
ya thx this helped some but not as much as i needed anyone else know the answers? We really don't do homework here asbp92 especially, if I read it correctly, requires 55 answers. no only 30 for these OS come on people ive looked all over the web and cant find these stuff this is my last resort Wow, all I can say is you need to improve your research skills and, it seems, your ability to think logically. For example, every OS you've mentioned is a Microsoft OS. Do you not know this?

And, all those OS will run on a PERSONAL computer, also called a micro-computer.

What type of interface? Would that not be GUI (Graphical User Interface) for all of them?

Re: codename and date of release, you surely ought to be ABLE to find this info. Hint for Windows 95: try search phrase - release date for Windows 95. I can tell you what people called WinME after it came out... google it

hi im running win XP in my system.. i can SEE folder options in my system.. but iam unable to view hidden files and folders even THOUGH i click "Show hidden folders and files" option. Can ANYBODY help me out??What makes you think there are hidden folders where you are looking?i had the same problem do this if you can. read my problem recently.

Go to registry EDITOR by running regedit in the run box.
Go to this key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\
Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced

In the right hand area, double click hidden and change the value to 1.

Now you’re all set to go. Check it in your tools menu if the changes have taken effect. Mine have already been fixed :-)
Like Carbon implies...there might just not be any hidden files/folders where you are looking.

Solve : Computer won't shut down?

Answer»

Ok so yesterday my laptop was having a problem, I would go to try and shut it down or restart it and it wouldn't. All it did was stay at the screen where is says WINDOWS is shutting down. Also starting yesterday somehow all of my things are lost on the computer, a message came up that said "do to security reasons you are not able to get on the administrator page. and brought me to what looks like I just got a new computer. Meaning all of my items I had on here are nowhere to be found. I have XP Home SP2. Any ideas?1. Hit your start button and do as you normally do to shut down or restart, and when it doesn't respond you need to hit the CTRL+ALT+DEL, then go to the Task Manager.

2. Inside the Task Manager you'll see all of your processes running. If not, click the Processes tab to get to it.

3. Once you're in the Processes area, look at the column that says CPU and look for any processes that are showing activity, (meaning that the numbers in that column will fluctuate higher and lower). Click on at least 2-4 processes that are running and "kill" them. After you've killed at least a few or more of them, go back to your start button and try to log off again. Leave the Task Manager running AND on top, just incase you don't shut down as expected.

4. If your computer still doesn't log off or restart, repeat step no# 3. This time, kill a few processes that show NO movements in them. At least 3 or so will unlock/wakeup the computer.

NOTE: There are a few processes you don't want to mess with. They won't harm your computer at all, but you'll make the procedure harder on yourself... and those processes are:

taskmgr.exe It'll close out your taskbar at the bottom of your computer and you'll have no buttons at all.
System Idle Process If you kill this one, you may as well hit your power button because it'll SIMPLY idel the computer in a dormant state, and there will be nothing left to do but to hit the power button to shut it down.
explorer.exe I've noticed that killing this process will make it respond like the System Idle Process.

Other than those 3 main processes, you'll be fine.

Those 3 processes are the main ones not to kill at all.

Ohther than those mentioned processes, just go down the list and kill processes as you go, and then try the Start button again to shut down or so. All of this will take approximately 20 seconds or so.

The point to doing this is to eliminate the need of simply HITTING the power button, which I've done countless times, and I'm certain you have too. This has been 1,000,000,000% effective for me every single time, and I don't hit my power button any more to reboot or shut down, (not unless I ever get the dreaded "blue screen"), and that's been about 2 years now.

The shut down problem is caused by many reasons, and not limited to:
installing software
visiting WEB sites
corrupt files / programs
hardware issues
and a host of other causes,

after you reboot from a stuck shut down, it's best to let it log back on and load everything up, then do a normal reboot again.

The reason is, that after having to shut down from stuck/stubborn shut DOWNS, not all processes will load when you reboot. Some of your normal programs may not load up with windows as they did before. That's the reason for the reboot after the 1st reboot. It'll clear it up real good.

Remember, take special care to NOT have to power down your computer by hitting your power button.

You'll also want to eliminate those unnecessary programs from starting up to begin with.

Click start, run, type msconfig. Click on startup. Un-check every box, except what is absolutely necessary ie. antivirus, antispyware, firewalls.

Then restart your computer.http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=1B286E6D-8912-4E18-B570-42470E2F3582&displaylang=enlet us know how you goI will try these tomorrow and let you all know how it goes. Thanks for the suggestions and help.

Solve : Problems with Spybot S&D?

Answer»

I'm not sure if I'm on the correct FORUM but here goes. Everytime I run Spybot S&D I get three things on the SCAN. They are: MS Windows.IEFirewallBypass, MS WindowsSecurityCenter.AntivirusOverride and finally Spywarebot. I've tried removing Spywarebot but it keeps coming back. Any suggestions?Looks like you have a virus running on your machine, if spybot will not remove it try your avg, or adaware, windows defender, or any other spyware removal tools you may have or are available on the net for free. If these don't help do a search on spyware removal and post our question there. Or better yet just repost your question in the computer viruses and spyware forum below.
Try following this Malware Guide prepared by unlovedwarrior and CBMatt:

http://www.saviour-pc.com/forums/view.php?pg=malware_guideDoes spywarebot have it's own uninstaller or is it LISTED in add/remove programs, if not you may have to remove it manually.
Technically it's not a virus or spyware it's a pup so I DOUBT any antivirus or antispyware programs or will detect it or remove it.If you have TeaTimer running turn it off when you go to remove Spywarebot...
And yes Spywarebot is listed as a rogue program.so you should continue trying until you are sure it is gone...I ran two more scans with Spybot S&D and Spywarebot did not show up so it must be gone. I'm just curious why it would list IE FirewallBypass and Antivirus OVERRIDE. Aren't these legit programs?Have a read...

Solve : monitor trouble, i think?

Answer»

toshiba laptop is displaying a night mode/photo negative screen in every function---helpDepending on the model of the Toshiba...normally this is caused by a defective inverter and should be replaced by a qualified PC Tech.

UPDATE:

In CASE anyone is wondering...I've worked on Toshibas a LOT...it seems the LCD inverter is what causes the problem the OP described...in most cases. HOWEVER, this alone may not be the issue.

Again...a qualified Tech can REPLACE the relatively inexpensive PART (depending on where you obtain it). If this doesn't solve the issue...then you may need a new LCD...but let the Tech decide.Try to get it fixed as cheaply as possible. May i ask what model it is?

Solve : Batch file auto answer?

Answer»

I am trying to make a batch file using the "reg" command which edits entries in the registry. Specifically, I want to automatically delete a SPECIFIC registry entry every time a program boots up. The only problem is that the "reg" command requires you to confirm the deletion of the entry (considering it's a registry entry it's understandable). I also checked the "help" part of the "reg" command, there doesn't seem to be any flag to force the deletion.

So my question is: is there anyway to make an "auto answer" in the batch file so that "Y" is entered in everytime the confirmation comes up?

Thanks. I did a brief search of the FORUM and wiki, and didn't see any answer to this question, sorry if it's been asked before.

OS: WINDOWS XP Corporate Edition.

Specifically the commad is:

Reg delete HKLM\Software\Classes\CLSID\{7E1B4139-3E2A-53A1-62C2-2E973AD18F8B}\MiscStatus /v data

which deletes the "data" value under that folder.
There is probably no way to do it because you risk damaging your computer. That's kind of presumptuous of the coders then since there are many other commands that could damage your computer which allow /y parameters to say "yes" to all, suchas "deltree", this can damage your computer if you delete the wrong tree.

Although this is a bit off the subject, I don't think coders of commands should presume the level of expertise of the person using the command, while it is good to have a failsafe such as a confirmation, if a person is sure that he wants to do something, let him do it, if he damages his computer, then he damages his computer, he chose to use the /y function knowing full well what it does.
Ummm ..., why does this particular registry key keep getting added back to the registry? Quote from: soybean on September 09, 2007, 08:53:04 PM

Ummm ..., why does this particular registry key keep getting added back to the registry?

Please, do not take this as being rude, but does that matter? I know that I want to delete this registry value and I know what it does. My only question is not about the registry value and how or why it is added, but whether or not the "reg" command can have an autoanswer in the PARAMETER field to get through the confirmation.

I would think that it would be a lot easier too just leave the confirmation box activated then cahnging it because there are many risks involvedNot for nothing, yes it is true that playing around with the registry can be dangerous, but that is why you can easily export any key with the simple click of the mouse button. Also, I don't think there should be this divine mystry about the sensitivity of registry values, some registry values simply disable the screensaver, some autoexecute a file on startup, some remove the trash can from your desktop, and so? That's what they do, people who know what they're doing, well, know what they're doing.

If you don't know what you're doing and don't back up a registry key, then, well, that's your fault, and you sort of ask for what happens to your computer. But the fact of the matter, some people do know what they need to do, and I think it is presumptuous for the coders of command lines to think otherwise. Just putting a simple /y option isn't turing off the failsafe for those who may not be sure of whether to delete something or not, but to NOT give the option for experienced users on the assumption that "it is dangerous" is just silly imo.

Thank you very much ghostdog74 that was the simple answer I was looking for and it worked as well.

However, I tried using that syntax using "/force" and it didn't work. In any event, the echo worked, thanks ghostdog.

Because it starts OK in safemode does not rule out hardware as an issue...a minimal amount of drivers are loaded in safemode.
This does not mean that it may be an issue with just software as if for example it was a funky vid card which is hardware it may run properly on Windows drivers but not when it's ramped up in normal mode...
Another example would be if a network card is failing and wonking another pice of hardware as a result which i've seen many times the symptoms won't neccessarily show up in safemode but will exhibit the sickness when booting in full mode...

So stop yelling at me and take the constructive criticism for what it is...constructive.Quote from: championvette on September 12, 2007, 05:38:17 PM

Solve : Please answer as if you're dealing with a 2 year old.?

Answer»

Had a computer with Win 98 on E drive. Got a newer computer with Win 2000 already installed on C drive. Son took old C drive out & installed in newer computer for additional storage & space. Now I have files for both 98 and 2000. I can't believe that this is a good thing & my computer, I don't think, believes it either. Is it safe to do a search for Win 98 files & DELETE them all? I'm a senior citizen and not particularly techno savvy, so please keep your answers simple. Please? Thanks. If you are booting into Windows 2000 (original drive) then it is safe to reformat (wipe out) all the windows 98 files as you don't need them. If you don't remove them then the addition of the windows 98 drive was a waste of time.

Alan <>< I'd have to admit that a 2 year old that can swap HDD's around and successfully install an OS is pretty impressive...OOOOh, but it wasn't I who was messing with the HDS! It was my son, remember?

I'm ASSUMING (we all know what that does), that none of the other programs that I have on my computer need Windows 98 to run effectively? I'm thinking of going to my recycle bin as we speak & taking all the 98's off. I got them as far as the recycle bin a couple of weeks ago, but then, was too intimidated to go any further! But that's a good point: if my entire "e" drive is being used by Win 98, why have it, huh? Thanks so much. You don't know how long I've looked for a site like this one! One final comment/question: How do I know for sure which hd the computer is booting from? Again, I assume that it's the new "c" drive, but want to make absolutely sure.

P.S. Just went to do what I said, i.e., delete Win 98 files. What is a CAB file?To make sure of the C: drive remove the drive that has Win98 and re-boot a few times. Win2K should boot normally.
Then simply re-connect the Win98 drive jumpered as slave and format it using Disk Management...this is providing you have backed up any data you need from there. You can now use it as extra storage.

A.cab file is a method Microsoft used to compress files that came with an installation CD...mostly for Win98 thru the WinME OS's....maybe longer.Patio! You lost me with "simply....". No idea what jumpered, formatting with disk management, etc. means. Let's just suppose for a minute, ok? I'll just assume (there's that word again), that the computer boots from Win 2000. If I'm right in that assumption, THEN is it safe to delete all those Win 98 CAB, and others, files? Just for argument's sake, what might possibly be on the deleted Win98 that I might need in order to use some of the same programs I'm currently using with it installed? That's a little convuluted, so hope you understand what I'm saying! If you get tired of dealing with me, I'll certainly understand, but I do appreciate your input! Wasn't my intention to confuse at all...
If it currently boots properly to Win2K and all your programs operate OK then you can safely delete anything to do with Win98...you don't need it for anything. Is windows booting or trying to boot windows 98 at all?Hi P-P! In answer to that question, here's another one....how could I tell? What do I look for? Thanks.
