Solve : Computer shutting down.. Help? |
Answer» Let me start by saying I'm not a computer wiz so bear with me. For the past few weeks while working on the internet my computer will randomly shut down. The shutdown occurs without warning or error message. I is preceeded by a loud humming noise then just turns into a black screen. The problem occurs sometime during the reboot if I try to turn the computer back on but if I wait 30 min to 1 hr it will work normally until it occurs again. The problem seems to be worse while TRYING to watch videos. Any help would be greatly appreciated.Hi there |

Solve : logkin failure at banking site after loading windows xp? |
Answer» i recently did a clean load of windows xp and now i cannot login to an online banking site. working with the bank we tried everything we could including resetting username and password. using the reset info the bank can access my ACCOUNT and i can access the account from a friends COMPUTER but when i try to use mine i keep getting login failure messages. all other sites i use that have logins work fine, it's just the banking site.I had a similar problem & found that it was simply because I had disabled the acceptance of cookies.Quote from: glendab on March 11, 2008, 08:41:43 PM i recently did a clean load of windows xp and now i cannot login to an online banking site. You reinstalled or did repairs? Is your computer CONNECTED to a router? have you check the certificate of the browser?Have you CHECKED the security options in both browsers? Alan <>< Also in IE you can put the link for the bank in your Trusted Zone under Tools/Internet Options/Security...List the last 6 or so XP Updates in Add-Remove PROGRAMS...In Control Panel/Add Remove Programs the updates or Hotfixes for XP will be listed...list the 6 most recent...Open Add/Remove Programs...scroll to the bottom of the list...write down the last 6 or so and post the list here...Then you need to return to the Windows update site as all your updates are wiped out with a re-install of the OS. |

Solve : Problems with audio/video? |
Answer» Hi all, Hi Jflex, welcome to the forum Thanks for the welcome, much appreciated! No, I'm not experiencing any playback problems with files stored on my hard drive, looks like it's just happpening on videos and audio clips I try to use online. I use internet explorer. My security is minimum, windows firewall, pop-up ad blocker. I had McAfee for my security but that has expired and I couldn't afford to renew it at this time. Quote from: mr_skipper24 on March 09, 2008, 11:04:13 AM Do you have the same problem if your playing a DVD movie or music CD on the computer? you may try it 1st. because if you do have the problem then its a problem on the drivers of the notebook. But if it works fine then its a problem on the connection. Do you have router? Yeah, I think it's a problem with the connection. I do have a router, but it's only being used to hook up my internet to my directv receiver. Now that you mention that I think that's when I started having the problem, when I bought the router and hooked it up to my modem to connect to the directv receiver. Hmm...but what is a solution for that, I still want the router connected to the directv receiver, so I don't want to disconnect it. All you need to do is disable the firewall / NAT and open a port on the router. call the router manufacturer on configuring the router for port and NAT firewall Quote from: mr_skipper24 on March 09, 2008, 01:10:19 PM All you need to do is disable the firewall / NAT and open a port on the router. call the router manufacturer on configuring the router for port and NAT firewall Thank you very much for your help. Guess what, it looks like all I needed to do was update my router's firmware and the problem seems to be solved. At least so far things are running ok.Thats great! Quote from: jflex237 on March 09, 2008, 11:30:13 AM I use internet explorer. My security is minimum, windows firewall, pop-up ad blocker. That's not good. You need security software. There are some great free programs you can get. Try AVG free for anti-virus, Comodo for firewall, and SUPERantispyware for spyware.Quote from: Soviet Genius on March 09, 2008, 02:55:36 PM Quote from: jflex237 on March 09, 2008, 11:30:13 AMI use internet explorer. My security is minimum, windows firewall, pop-up ad blocker. Thank you very much, I will try all of those that you named. Will any of those interfere with any of the programs I have installed on my computer? No, just make sure that you choose only one anti Virus program, two will cause problems. Remember that anti-Spyware & anti-virus are two different things (you can have as many anti-Spyware programs installed as you like, accompanied with one anti-virus program). I recommend that you read this (scroll down to 2nd post). Glad that your problems fixed, but get secure |

Solve : Installing xp on sata drive, can I boot from card reader to install sata driver?? |

Login into the BIOS of your computer and change the 1st boot device to you CD/DVD ROM save then exit It's not going to do this with Vista installed ....Have you not read the rest of this Topic ? ?Quote from: squall_01 on March 09, 2008, 10:11:24 AM It shouldnt preventing him from formating the drive. Like with f-disk or seatools or something. I know that if you forgot the hardware topic. Your testing my patience now...One last question, when I install the SATA/RAID drivers, can I put any sata drivers on (ie are they all the same)? The floppy that I have was included with the discs I GOT with my previous pc. It has 'Promise Serial-ATA Raid Driver G72-PRSA030' printed on it, will it be ok to use these drivers with my new pc, or do I have to download drivers for my specific machine? It's always best to use the ones written by the manuf....the one's you have there may be for an add-on card and may not work properly. Wow, that WENT a lot easier than I expected. I changed the boot order and was able to boot from the xp disc. I pressed F6 when it asked if I wanted to install 3rd party sata drivers but i got the message that no floppy disc had been detected, and there was no option to NAVIGATE to a usb flash drive. I had 2 options either cancel install or continue without installing 3rd party drivers. I chose to continue and the install carried on just like a normal xp install and I was able delete partitions and format the drive as normal without removing it from the pc. Thanks for all the help.Your most welcome. Young Grass Hopper |

Solve : XP pro - sp2 won't start after merging some registry back ups/reboot? |
Answer» .........and nothing I've tried has worked. Including a fresh set of boot disks I downloaded from microsoft. Given what I was up to at the time, I can pretty much guarantee that it isn't a hardware issue at all. I'd put my money on a corrupt registry Quote One time I got as far as the repair console and it asked me for my password, lol. (embarrassingly, I have no idea what it is if even exists. Had it on automatic sign in since my last clean install!!! lol) Repair Console=Recovery Console This is a well documented problem with some versions of XP, the fix is a registry edit but you cannot access the registry. The relevant MS KB is here, unfortunately the 'cure' requires you to access the Recovery Console. Quote I did try to get to the C prompt 1 or 2 times, but that was before I tried the boot disks. Just to see if I could as I don't really have the knowledge to do much if I did get in there. Have you tried Safe Mode? Did you create a Restore Point before merging registry backups? It's possible to go back to a Restore Point from the Command Prompt. Did you fully backup your registry before merging (using ERUNT or similar)? Do you have an install cd of XP Pro? You may have to do a Repair Install. Are there any critical data files on your hdd which you want to backup before a possible/probable reinstall? This is why manually editing the registry can be a dangerous thing... As Dusty stated without a good backup of the Registry you may be looking at a re-install.Quote from: Dusty on March 08, 2008, 01:53:13 AM QuoteGiven what I was up to at the time, I can pretty much guarantee that it isn't a hardware issue at all. Well, this is where I'm at now. My hold up now is that recovery console is asking for a password. I'm trying to use "Windows-KEY-Enterprise". It was in ISO. The machine I have to use doesn't have a burner and so I tried using ISO MAGIC. **Not sure if I did that right!!!** Because of it's size, I knew that I would have to span it over multiple floppies, right? I think that I mounted it to a virtual drive ok. So I just right clicked to add it to a spanned zip file? To which it made 5 of... SO! lol Now I can get as far as recovery console, then select the windows installation that I want to repair ( C: WINDOWS ) , but I can't seem to get it to boot those floppies when it needs to deal with the password issues..... Baaaahhh!!! The boot sequence is: 1:) CD 2:) A:\Windows-Key-Enterprise\disk#1of5 3:) C:WINDOWS At the password prompt just hit Enter... Quote from: patio on March 09, 2008, 07:04:45 PM At the password prompt just hit Enter... That's what I thought too. But it says wrong and makes me try again. Up to 3 times, then says that you've gotten it wrong 3 times and hit enter to restart..... Then it just cycles back again.............since then, I have tried just copy and pasting the contents of the mounted image onto A: drive and it seemed to span it on it's own, without using winzip. Still the same....didn't work.....! lol Quote from: Digit on March 09, 2008, 07:10:23 PM Quote from: patio on March 09, 2008, 07:04:45 PMAt the password prompt just hit Enter... I don't have any gems of info to assist with your current problem. However, with regard to the Recovery Console password, I posted something like this on Jan.22. Quote There are several things I believe should be done when your system is running sweetly, in preparation for the day your system lets you down. Here is one of them: Might come in HANDY for when your system is back to normal. If I were you I'd be getting close to format & re-install Quote
Really? But why? I hope it's not because it's the easiest/shortest way?Quote from: Digit on March 09, 2008, 06:42:09 PM
There just HAS to be some way to get by this little hurdle!!! lolWindows Key Enterprise seems to be a third party utility to set/change the admin password to 12345. The password problem with Recovery Console is not due to any password, and even if you were able to set an admin password Recovery Console would not accept it. The problem is a bug in XP which seems not to go away unless the Registry entry is amended to stop Recovery Console asking for a password. Quote from: Digit Are there any critical data files on your hdd which you want to backup before a possible/probable reinstall? Yes So why don't you concentrate on recovering your files Quote from: Dusty If I were you I'd be getting close to format & re-installQuote from: Digit Really? But why? I hope it's not because it's the easiest/shortest way? Perhaps I was a bit HASTY.... but from my point of view there comes a time when trying to save an operating system is a total waste of time and the recovery of critical data files is surely more important. Without backup of these files there's the possibility, even if it's a REMOTE possibility, that data which has taken a long time to create will be lost or damaged while trying to save an operating system which can easily be re-installed. Good luck with your struggles. |

Solve : Too Many Program Files? |
Answer» I am a software junkie and it appears I have too many programs installed for them to all be viewed from the Start...Program menu. I have XP Home. All of the program files do not show when I click on the program menu, is there a way to fix this or a way to move/group some of these so that I can find them all from the start...program menu? When you click Start, All Programs, does your menu expand into multiple columns, or does it only appear in one column with a SCROLL arrow at top/bottom? There is one column with a scroll arrow at bottom, then it expands into two columns which is not all the programs, with no scroll arrows once expanded.Try going to C:\Documents and Settings\username\Start Menu\Programs and to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs. You should be able to SEE all the programs there and remove enough to be able to see them all in the start menu.Right click the start button, choose Explore and group the program shortcuts into subfoldersYou can also remove some of the programs from the Program menu by right clicking the programs you don't normally USE and choose 'delete'. It only removes the icon, not the program, from the menu. There is one column with a scroll arrow at bottom, then it expands into two columns which is not all the programs, with no scroll arrows once expanded.Hmm, that doesn't make sense. I BELIEVE the menu only works in one of two ways, depending on how your system in configured. It will either show just one column, with scroll arrows, or it will generate multiple columns when one column can not contain all the programs. And, I'm wondering what screen resolution you use. On a 17 inch monitor set at 1024 x 768 resolution, I believe up to four columns of programs could be displayed in my Programs menu. Of course, this will also depend on the length of program names on the menu. Please, when deleting programs, go to the Control Panel and then add remove programs to delete them. NOT from the Programs directory. UNLESS you go to start / programs and see a little arrow beside the program that will open a fly out box with a Remove (NAME of Program) if you click on it, it'll remove said program. But always, always always remove programs with the add remove in the control panel.Quote from: Doug.Gentry on March 13, 2008, 05:35:08 PM UNLESS you go to start / programs and see a little arrow beside the program that will open a fly out box with a Remove (Name of Program) if you click on it, it'll remove said program.Wrong. Solve : XP changes time when I boot up from Linux? |
Answer» I have two hdd's on this PC that are in removable DRIVE bays. * Open up the registry editor by choosing Start -> Run -> Regedit Make sure to create a backup before EDITING the Registry...i use ERUNT.Yep, it doesn't matter how long I'm off. It will show a huge time change. It's almost like Linux is setting wrong time zone or something that carries over to Windows when I BOOT that up... Which is SOoooo strange cause Linux shows the correct time and date. Crazy hu? At first I thought it was the bios but that didn't make sense if Linux was correct. HMMmmm. If the CMOS battery was the culprit it would be off on both OS's i believe... But a new battery will do no harm. What brand of drive bays did you use ? ? Not that it AFFECTS this issue...just curious. |

Solve : computer randomly restarting? |
Answer» my computer has been shutting off and i've been getting a blue screen saying things LIKE "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA" and "DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS OR EQUAL". It HAPPENS more often when i open ad-aware or while it's scanning. I looked up a solution to this and it said to download "vundofix" and search for this vundo thing and remove it. I did but this still happens. Also, usually when i get the blue screen I have to shut off the computer to start it up again. But when i shut it off and try turning it back on it turns on for about .5 seconds then turns back off. I have to wait a while till when I turn it on, it stays on. I took out one of my ram sticks cause the blue screen was saying something about possible memory problems, and this stopped my computer from restarting for about a week, but now its back again. |

Solve : Twisted Pair Cable help? |
Answer» I have a Q/A about Making Twisted Pair Cable?? But this is whare I need help every pair of wires you must Twist and then get the next pair of wires and Twist them. do not twist them more, when hooking up to an RJ45 connector or outlet, try to limit the amount that you untwist. as i stated earlier, they are twisted at varying degrees for a reason.I totally agree with Homer. If you making cables just for fun or for your own desire, cool... If it's for something in the server room.... Buy it.... when that SQL server LOSES the connection because your home made cable wasn't good......You don't want to stand in the VP's office and explain to him that you saved $4.00 But is a good practice to learn how to make your own cables and it actually does come in handy every once in awhile. it seems i was not very clear, when i stated "i strongly recommend not making your own ethernet cable" i meant the actual cable. by all means it is fine to crimp on your own RJ45 connectors. |

Solve : Video Display HELP? |
Answer» I am running WIN xp pro and I do a lot of Video Editting but I have a Q/A about Aspect Ratios and Pixels??? And I understand that 4:3 means the image will be 4 times as wide as it is High. No, it means a ratio of 4/3. For example, 100 x 75 would be an image where the ratio of width to height is 4/3. So, it's 1.33 times as wide as it is high. So, the numbers you got, "NTSC 4:3 Ratio will be 720 X 480 Pixels", are not quite accurate. 720 x 480 is not a 4:3 ratio, close, but not exactly. 640 x 480 would be a 4:3 ratio. 720 x 540 would be a 4:3 ratio. Quote But how does the computer see it as a set pixel size like 720 x 480?I don't know. Someone else will probably have an answer.Full screen NTSC dvd footage is usually 720x480 and fullscreen PAL dvd footage is usually 720x576. This footage is supposed be shown on a 4:3 TV... but these resolutions aren't 4:3 mathematically. The reason for this (I'm simplifying here) is due to the fact that TVs have rectangular pixels and when you show the above resolutions on a TV they will look 4:3. In practical terms it means that when you look at dvd resolution IMAGES (720x480, 720x576) on a PC monitor in programs like VirtualDubMod they do not have the correct pixel aspect ratio so they look a tiny bit squished/stretched in comparison to the way they look on a TV. This is normal. Some programs will correct this when they are displaying the footage by resizing it so it looks right but if you are viewing it with a "Square Pixels" option then it will look slightly wrong. |

Answer» I have a Toshiba SATELLITE laptop and lately when I have my laptop connected to my TV via an S-Video cable the vids don't play on the TV; all I get is black. They've worked for years on the TV- I've noticed as well that when I'm on a site such as YouTube that there vids actually still play on my TV, but all my DOWNLOADED vids, and a lot of STREAMS don't play any longer. As well, all my video games still come up just fine when connected to TV.....if someone can help it would be more than great, thanks. |

Solve : Windows XP-Home won't startup? |
Answer» When I turn on the computer it starts to go through it's startup and when it GETS to windows starting up it restarts the whole computer and does the same thing over and over (occationally SHOW a screen to us the last known working startup) which does nothing. I think it's a hard drive problem (5 YEARS old). My old computer is doing the exact same thing. It is also about that old or older. It will start to boot up and the log on screen comes on for about TWO or three seconds and then it starts to reboot over and over again. I tried to load windows xp again but it won't load.Welcome to CH! |
