Solve : Computer shutting down.. Help?

Answer»

Let me start by saying I'm not a computer wiz so bear with me. For the past few weeks while working on the internet my computer will randomly shut down. The shutdown occurs without warning or error message. I is preceeded by a loud humming noise then just turns into a black screen. The problem occurs sometime during the reboot if I try to turn the computer back on but if I wait 30 min to 1 hr it will work normally until it occurs again. The problem seems to be worse while TRYING to watch videos. Any help would be greatly appreciated.Hi there

Please provide us with more information about your system (see here)
Sorry for not including enough info. The computer is a Toshiba laptop that runs Windows XP, Pentium 4 CPUThats no problem

Which application do you use to watch videos & are they DVD's or files that CAUSE the crashes?

Unfortunately, it could be a number of different things causing your computer to crash. Unless you have anymore information you can think of that you can provide us which you suspect could have contributed to the problem, like the recent installation of software/hardware or any other problems/glitches you've noticed leading up to this problem, then we'll need to go through all the POSSIBLE CULPRITS (which isn't a problem).

First, MAKE sure you have all critical updates installed from Microsoft. Make sure after updates are installed, you check again & wait until you see the 'no critical updates are available...' message.

Then, do some basic maintenance. Download CCleaner & please read this guide for how to use it.

Also, check to see if your HD needs to be defragmented (guide here).

Next, see this guide for security software you'll need to download & also how to post your log files created by that software in the virus section for this forum.

That'll be a good start I think

You reinstalled or did repairs?
Is your computer CONNECTED to a router?
have you check the certificate of the browser?Have you CHECKED the security options in both browsers?

Alan <>< Also in IE you can put the link for the bank in your Trusted Zone under Tools/Internet Options/Security...List the last 6 or so XP Updates in Add-Remove PROGRAMS...In Control Panel/Add Remove Programs the updates or Hotfixes for XP will be listed...list the 6 most recent...Open Add/Remove Programs...scroll to the bottom of the list...write down the last 6 or so and post the list here...Then you need to return to the Windows update site as all your updates are wiped out with a re-install of the OS.

Solve : Problems with audio/video?

Answer»

Hi all,

I'm new to this forum, so bear with me. If this question needs to go to another subtopic, please let me know.
I'm on a dell computer, running on windows xp.

I've noticed w/in the last couple of months that my computer has been having an audio/video problem. Meaning, for instance, say I go to youtube I can watch a video on there for about 30 seconds to a minute but then the audio and video will just stop. My computer doesn't crash or anything like that, I just can't play the video any longer. It happens everytime I try to play a video. And if I want to listen to a song online, I can play it for about 30 seconds but then it will stop.
Now I'm in an irc chatroom and I can talk in there for about 2 minutes and the screen will move and I see people chatting, but then after 2 minutes it stops. And say about 5 minutes goes by and then the chatroom screen will quickly scroll through everything everyone has said in the time will my screen was just sitting there.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

I thought it was a flash player problem, I have most recent version of it. So, un-INSTALLED it and then installed it again, but it's still happening.

THANKS all for any solution you might have.
Hi Jflex, welcome to the forum

Are you experiencing any playback problems with files stored on your hardrive or is it just while you're online?

Which browser do you use & how is your security?Do you have the same problem if your playing a DVD movie or music CD on the computer? you may try it 1st. because if you do have the problem then its a problem on the drivers of the notebook. But if it works FINE then its a problem on the connection. Do you have router? Quote from: neljan on March 09, 2008, 03:11:21 AM

Thanks for the welcome, much appreciated!

No, I'm not experiencing any playback problems with files stored on my hard drive, looks like it's just happpening on videos and audio clips I try to use online.

I use internet explorer. My security is minimum, windows firewall, pop-up ad blocker.
I had McAfee for my security but that has expired and I couldn't afford to renew it at this time.

Yeah, I think it's a problem with the connection.
I do have a router, but it's only being used to hook up my internet to my directv receiver. Now that you mention that I think that's when I started having the problem, when I bought the router and hooked it up to my modem to connect to the directv receiver. Hmm...but what is a solution for that, I still want the router connected to the directv receiver, so I don't want to disconnect it.
All you need to do is disable the firewall / NAT and open a port on the router. call the router manufacturer on configuring the router for port and NAT firewall Quote from: mr_skipper24 on March 09, 2008, 01:10:19 PM

Thank you very much for your help. Guess what, it looks like all I needed to do was update my router's firmware and the problem seems to be solved. At least so far things are running ok.Thats great! Quote from: jflex237 on March 09, 2008, 11:30:13 AM

Thank you very much, I will try all of those that you named.

Will any of those interfere with any of the programs I have installed on my computer? No, just make sure that you choose only one anti Virus program, two will cause problems.

Remember that anti-Spyware & anti-virus are two different things (you can have as many anti-Spyware programs installed as you like, accompanied with one anti-virus program).

I recommend that you read this (scroll down to 2nd post).

Solve : Windows/ Linux?

Answer»

So far so good I am using windows operating system and also Linux operating system.

But some time i am getting problem both operating system. So my friend told me to us only Linus Operating system. Some time I think it is better use of window operating system.

So that please give me right suggestion which one is good.

thanksYou don't have to be limited to only having OS (operating system) installed. You can have both Windows and Linux installed on the same machine. So, do you want to remove one system from your hard drive, or resolve the problem you're having so that you can use both?

If you decide to remove one, I can't tell you which one would be BEST for you to keep. That's going to depend on your preference.
I too use Linux (Ubuntu) and also XP-PRO
Both are good, both has their own little issues.
I find myself MOVING back and FORTH between the 2.

You may like to try out different versions of linux and find the flavor that suits you.

Now days it's really easy to install and also to configure.

SuSe is a good one.
Ubuntu is another very nice one.

I've tried tons of them and find that Ubuntu is the best so far I've ever used.

In fact for all my outlaying crew stations I RUN Ubuntu on those stations.

I can lock it down so the crews can't hose it all up like they just love to do with windows.

Anyway good luck. Also if you choose to try Ubuntu they will ship you up to 10 copies Free...
They ship both a LIVE CD and an install CD.
The nice part about that is you can run the Live CD without installing anything...Also, if you or a buddy have a Broadband connection you can download the dvd.
I downloaded the live cd, when it boots up you'll see an icon on the desktop that says "Install"

If you click that it will install it for you.

Solve : Mouse sticks??

Hello:
At times my MOUSE wants to "Stick" at different POINTS on the screen. doesn't seem to matter what I am doing (On-line, email, Or just doing Solitaire.) I have CHANGED mouse but makes no difference ...
Windows XP
Any Idea please ?
Jim
Do you have an optical mouse or a wheel, in either case check the pads on the BOTTOM side and clean them from any "muck" they may have picked up. If you are using an older track ball mouse, rotate the ball on the bottom to open it up and with a PENCIL eraser wipe the inside rollers and remove the "muck" that has gotten on them. One more thing to try, clean your mouse pad really good.........Good Luck!!

Solve : HDD problem- Vista Vs XP?

Answer»

Hey A while ago, I tried Vista on a SPARE HDD to get a feel for it. After i was done, I tried to put XP back on the HDD but it was having none of it- the HDD never worked again and off it went to RMA.

basically- was that just a REALLY nasty co-incidence, or does Vista have some kind of voodoo effect on HDDs if users want to move to another O.S.?

I have a fair understanding of computers, I dont see how its possible, but stranger THINGS have happened..

Cheers!

KennyAre you asking whether Vista broke your hard drive? No it didn't. What would Microsoft GAIN from breaking hard drives? It would prevent users from installing other versions of Windows and would SOONER or later be discovered and lead to a massive lawsuit.
Vista have gained a reputation as being hard to get rid of once installed but a low level wipe (sometimes also called zeroing the drive) will get rid of anything, including Vista.

Solve : Installing xp on sata drive, can I boot from card reader to install sata driver??

Answer»

Quote from: mr_skipper24 on March 09, 2008, 10:16:55 AM

1. Login into the BIOS of your computer and change the 1st boot device to you CD/DVD ROM save then exit
2. insert the XP CD and boot from the CD/DVD ROM
3. it will start copying the files and on the process it will ASK you to reformat the hard drive. format the hard drive of the computer and after that it will ask you to INSTALL the XP
4. follow the steps and your done.

It's not going to do this with Vista installed ....Have you not read the rest of this Topic ? ?Quote from: squall_01 on March 09, 2008, 10:11:24 AM
It shouldnt preventing him from formating the drive. Like with f-disk or seatools or something. I know that if you forgot the hardware topic.

Your testing my patience now...One last question, when I install the SATA/RAID drivers, can I put any sata drivers on (ie are they all the same)? The floppy that I have was included with the discs I GOT with my previous pc. It has 'Promise Serial-ATA Raid Driver G72-PRSA030' printed on it, will it be ok to use these drivers with my new pc, or do I have to download drivers for my specific machine? It's always best to use the ones written by the manuf....the one's you have there may be for an add-on card and may not work properly.
Wow, that WENT a lot easier than I expected. I changed the boot order and was able to boot from the xp disc. I pressed F6 when it asked if I wanted to install 3rd party sata drivers but i got the message that no floppy disc had been detected, and there was no option to NAVIGATE to a usb flash drive. I had 2 options either cancel install or continue without installing 3rd party drivers. I chose to continue and the install carried on just like a normal xp install and I was able delete partitions and format the drive as normal without removing it from the pc.
Thanks for all the help.Your most welcome. Young Grass Hopper

Solve : XP pro - sp2 won't start after merging some registry back ups/reboot?

Answer»

.........and nothing I've tried has worked. Including a fresh set of boot disks I downloaded from microsoft.

One time I got as far as the repair console and it asked me for my password, lol. (embarrassingly, I have no idea what it is if even exists. Had it on automatic sign in since my last clean install!!! lol)

Needless to say, that's about as far as I have gotten. Left on it's own, it will just cycle threw to the advanced settings partition over and over again....

Given what I was up to at the time, I can pretty much guarantee that it isn't a hardware issue at all.

I did try to get to the C prompt 1 or 2 times, but that was before I tried the boot disks. Just to see if I could as I don't really have the knowledge to do much if I did get in there.....:-(

Anyway, thanks in advance to anyone that can offer a solution to my problem here. Quote

Repair Console=Recovery Console This is a well documented problem with some versions of XP, the fix is a registry edit but you cannot access the registry.

The relevant MS KB is here, unfortunately the 'cure' requires you to access the Recovery Console.

Have you tried Safe Mode?

Did you create a Restore Point before merging registry backups? It's possible to go back to a Restore Point from the Command Prompt.

Did you fully backup your registry before merging (using ERUNT or similar)?

Do you have an install cd of XP Pro? You may have to do a Repair Install.

Are there any critical data files on your hdd which you want to backup before a possible/probable reinstall?

This is why manually editing the registry can be a dangerous thing...
As Dusty stated without a good backup of the Registry you may be looking at a re-install.Quote from: Dusty on March 08, 2008, 01:53:13 AM

Well, this is where I'm at now. My hold up now is that recovery console is asking for a password. I'm trying to use "Windows-KEY-Enterprise". It was in ISO. The machine I have to use doesn't have a burner and so I tried using ISO MAGIC. **Not sure if I did that right!!!**
Because of it's size, I knew that I would have to span it over multiple floppies, right?

I think that I mounted it to a virtual drive ok. So I just right clicked to add it to a spanned zip file? To which it made 5 of...

SO! lol Now I can get as far as recovery console, then select the windows installation that I want to repair ( C: WINDOWS ) , but I can't seem to get it to boot those floppies when it needs to deal with the password issues..... Baaaahhh!!!

The boot sequence is:

1:) CD
2:) A:\Windows-Key-Enterprise\disk#1of5
3:) C:WINDOWS At the password prompt just hit Enter...

That's what I thought too. But it says wrong and makes me try again. Up to 3 times, then says that you've gotten it wrong 3 times and hit enter to restart.....

Then it just cycles back again.............since then, I have tried just copy and pasting the contents of the mounted image onto A: drive and it seemed to span it on it's own, without using winzip. Still the same....didn't work.....! lol Quote from: Digit on March 09, 2008, 07:10:23 PM

I don't have any gems of info to assist with your current problem. However, with regard to the Recovery Console password, I posted something like this on Jan.22.

Quote
There are several things I believe should be done when your system is running sweetly, in preparation for the day your system lets you down. Here is one of them:

On many XP installations you can't start the Recovery Console because it won't recognize any password, even if a password has never been set, and will not accept a blank password either. This registry edit causes the Recovery Console not to ask for a password. This works for both XP Home and XP Professional.

Start | Run | Regedit
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Setup\RecoveryConsole
Set the DWORD SecurityLevel value to 1
Exit Registry and Reboot

Might come in HANDY for when your system is back to normal.

password issues.....

There just HAS to be some way to get by this little hurdle!!! lolWindows Key Enterprise seems to be a third party utility to set/change the admin password to 12345. The password problem with Recovery Console is not due to any password, and even if you were able to set an admin password Recovery Console would not accept it. The problem is a bug in XP which seems not to go away unless the Registry entry is amended to stop Recovery Console asking for a password.

Perhaps I was a bit HASTY.... but from my point of view there comes a time when trying to save an operating system is a total waste of time and the recovery of critical data files is surely more important. Without backup of these files there's the possibility, even if it's a REMOTE possibility, that data which has taken a long time to create will be lost or damaged while trying to save an operating system which can easily be re-installed.

Good luck with your struggles.

Solve : Odd comand for "quick posts"??

Answer»

Hello, I am running Win XP Pro, on a emachine, in which I keep tweaked to the point of obsession, but this is the first time I have not been able to figure out what this thing wants out of me. I looked in the Archives, in 2004 a guy had my same problem. I keep getting this prompt to INSERT CD #1 and it keeps trying to install something called "quick posts"? I put in the last CD I was using but it hasn't helped. I can' t get it to stop trying to install! The other guy never wrote the mod back when he asked him for more details. So here I am..... any help guys. Thanks either way. Peace, Jana

OH I forgot one other big thing is that I keep getting a message saying I am out of RAM and I don't know how to change it. I tried to install my ADOBE Photo and it could not install because of the low memory. I am only using 8% of my HARD drive! How can this be? DUH Extra please now!!! Thanks again. One thing you can try is go to Start/Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter...have your XP CD handy as it will ask for it.
Let it run to completion and re-boot.
Adobe programs use quite a bit of RAM. To fond out how much you have open Control Panel and clik on Help/About Windows...report back with the total RAM.

Solve : share files?

Answer»

I want to share files between my 2 computers in my wireless network. So far i have set the folder i want to share, shared on network, allowed file and printer sharing an exception to windows firewall, and have the same workgroup name. But i still cant view the other computer's files. Like when i go to My Network Places, my other computer doesn't show up, only mine. Is there some free software to share the files to save me the trouble of figuring all this out? What should i do to share files over my wireless network? Thanks Your router may have some firewall settings that need to change also. Are the two computers using Windows XP?

-Aaron
http://www.weknowerrors.com
A free Wiki for error messages and computer problems. It would be best to get file sharing working with wired connections before going wireless to eliminate the wireless configuration as the problem. But I GUESS you can always fall back to that if problem continues.

You don't need alternative software, you need to get yours working.

Operating System. What operating system(s) are you using?

Configuration. What is your network configuration? Do you just have the two computers trying to speak with each other directly using an "ad-hoc" wireless connection or are you using a wireless router to connect them?

Ping. From a command window at each computer see if you can ping the other one using its IP address. For example: >ping 192.168.1.2. If the computers cannot successfully ping each other, you do not have connectivity, and will not be able to communicate.

Show SHARES. If the computers can ping each other, use the Run dialog window off the Start menu to see if you can access the shares of the other computer. For example enter "\\ip_address" in the text entry box of run dialog window and hit enter.

This is discussed and illustrated coherently in the following Microsoft downloads:
File and Printer Sharing with Microsoft Windows
Troubleshooting File and Printer Sharing in Microsoft Windows XP I have two computers. One is connected to a modem, which is connected to the wireless router. This computer doesn't use wireless internet. My other computer is wireless, since it connects to my wireless router.

I tried the Ping THING and it worked out, like transfered or whatever. Uh, yeah so i just typed the ip adress into the run box and it connected me to my other computer. Good, so i should share files by connecting this way?

Thanks.1st you need to network the two computers. make sure you can ping both computer (vice versa) then enable the file and printer sharing on the each computers. I tried to ping the non-wireless computer and it didn't work. A message popped up saying unknown path. In the command prompt, it kept saying "request timed out." I KNOW i have the right IP, so i don't think its just a careless error. And i am using Windows Xp...disable the firewall.
what is the IP address of your two computers?I disabled the firewall which didn't change anything.
192.168.0.101 - wireless pc
192.168.254.2 - other pcyour two computer has two unique IP address and that is the reason why you cannot share the file.
your computer should have an IP address that is in range like PC1 should have 192.168.0.101 and PC2 should have an IP of 192.168.0.102 and make sure the file sharing is enabled. make sure both computers are connected to your router. How do i change my IP address? Do you have a router? if you do just connect both your computer to the router and the router will provide an IP address on your two PC's.

Yes i have a router. Both computers are connected to the router, one by wireless, and the other by wired connection from to the modem, to the router. But how will this give me a new ip?

Solve : Too Many Program Files?

Answer»

I am a software junkie and it appears I have too many programs installed for them to all be viewed from the Start...Program menu. I have XP Home. All of the program files do not show when I click on the program menu, is there a way to fix this or a way to move/group some of these so that I can find them all from the start...program menu? When you click Start, All Programs, does your menu expand into multiple columns, or does it only appear in one column with a SCROLL arrow at top/bottom? There is one column with a scroll arrow at bottom, then it expands into two columns which is not all the programs, with no scroll arrows once expanded.Try going to C:\Documents and Settings\username\Start Menu\Programs and to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs. You should be able to SEE all the programs there and remove enough to be able to see them all in the start menu.Right click the start button, choose Explore and group the program shortcuts into subfoldersYou can also remove some of the programs from the Program menu by right clicking the programs you don't normally USE and choose 'delete'. It only removes the icon, not the program, from the menu.

Hmm, that doesn't make sense. I BELIEVE the menu only works in one of two ways, depending on how your system in configured. It will either show just one column, with scroll arrows, or it will generate multiple columns when one column can not contain all the programs.

And, I'm wondering what screen resolution you use. On a 17 inch monitor set at 1024 x 768 resolution, I believe up to four columns of programs could be displayed in my Programs menu. Of course, this will also depend on the length of program names on the menu. Please, when deleting programs, go to the Control Panel and then add remove programs to delete them. NOT from the Programs directory.

UNLESS you go to start / programs and see a little arrow beside the program that will open a fly out box with a Remove (NAME of Program) if you click on it, it'll remove said program.

But always, always always remove programs with the add remove in the control panel.Quote from: Doug.Gentry on March 13, 2008, 05:35:08 PM

Solve : How change OS? Like to switch from ME to XP (search was overwhelming)?

Answer»

I had some trouble searching on this question. It may just be that I'm not using the right terms for my search but words like OS and ME and XP all give enormous amounts of results... so I'll ask directly.
I'm running Windows ME. Don't pity me yet, the machine was a gift and the ME came with it. I'm very happy with the Outlook 2000 which is on the machine and I'd like to keep that as well as maybe some other programs. Is that possible when changing the operating system? Or would I need the program disk to be able to install it? As I said it was gifted to me, but without the DISKS and permissions", or whatever.

How does one change the OS anyway?

And how do I find if my hardware will run the new OS?
Greatful for any advice, clues, links, etc.

Justin CaiseYou need to post your computer specs: processor speed, amount of RAM, hard drive size/free spaceOutlook is part of Windows so that's covered...
However any other programs you have that are not will be wiped out with a brand new OS (operating system ) installation.
If you are installing XP on that machine you would simply need to backup any data you want saved such as text files, emails if needed, address book, pictures etc.
Then you simply set the machine to boot from the CD first and boot to the XP CD. INSTRUCT it to wipe out the existing partition and re-create it and continue with the XP installation.
To check on XP DRIVERS you can download and install Everest HOME (Free ) and run a report and save it to file.
This report will TELL you exactly what hardware you will need XP drivers for...
You can visit the manuf. site for all these and or post the Computer Summary portion of the report here and we can assist tracking down the needed drivers.
Best of Luck and Welcome to CH !

Solve : XP changes time when I boot up from Linux?

Answer»

I have two hdd's on this PC that are in removable DRIVE bays.
1: Linux
2:XP

when I shut down XP and unlock the drive and lock my Linux drive in, all works fine and everything is great.

I can then logoff Linux and unlock that drive, lock in XP and start it up.
FIRST thing I see is that XP's time is off by 18 hours or so.

I have the correct time zone selected.
I have the DST patch loaded.
I can select the update the time and it will update it to the correct time.

If I lock in Linux again, it will do again.

Linux has the correct time everytime I login.
XP is wrong everytime, no matter how short a time I've been out of it.

I can shut down XP and restart and the time is fine.

Any ideas?Could it be the time that the XP drive is dis-connected or is it 18 hours no matter how long the drive is out ? ?
Below is a regedit to force XP to check it more often if that will help...

Quote

* Open up the registry editor by choosing Start -> Run -> Regedit
* Find the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\
Services\W32Time\TimeProviders\NtpClient
* Select the entry for ‘SpecialPollInterval’ and change the decimal value to a period of time you wish to use. The data value is in seconds, so for example, a value of 172800 will change the synchronization interval to 2 days, a value of 86400 will change it to 1 day, or a value of 3600 will change it to one hour.
* Exit from the Registry Editor, and ensure the ‘Automatically synchronise’ option is ticked for your system clock settings. (Be sure you use ‘Apply’ when you’ve finished making changes to the time setting box for the system clock, so the change there is a permanent one.)

Make sure to create a backup before EDITING the Registry...i use ERUNT.Yep, it doesn't matter how long I'm off. It will show a huge time change.

It's almost like Linux is setting wrong time zone or something that carries over to Windows when I BOOT that up...

Which is SOoooo strange cause Linux shows the correct time and date. Crazy hu?

At first I thought it was the bios but that didn't make sense if Linux was correct. HMMmmm. If the CMOS battery was the culprit it would be off on both OS's i believe...
But a new battery will do no harm.
What brand of drive bays did you use ? ?
Not that it AFFECTS this issue...just curious.

Solve : computer randomly restarting?

Answer»

my computer has been shutting off and i've been getting a blue screen saying things LIKE "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA" and "DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS OR EQUAL". It HAPPENS more often when i open ad-aware or while it's scanning. I looked up a solution to this and it said to download "vundofix" and search for this vundo thing and remove it. I did but this still happens. Also, usually when i get the blue screen I have to shut off the computer to start it up again. But when i shut it off and try turning it back on it turns on for about .5 seconds then turns back off. I have to wait a while till when I turn it on, it stays on. I took out one of my ram sticks cause the blue screen was saying something about possible memory problems, and this stopped my computer from restarting for about a week, but now its back again.

asus motherboard
P4 3.00gHz
512mb of ram (i have two sticks of 512 but i removed one)
ATI Radeon X1600 pro
windows xp pro

Try booting in safe mode then scanning again for viruses...Did you check your computer temperatures? Did you check inside to see, if all fans are running? Did you clean inside with compressed air?I searched for viruses, found an deleted stuff but its still doing it.

I've cleaned out my computer and checked the fans and temps and they seem to be fineBoth errors indicate more of hardware problem, then malware.
PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA may be caused by bad RAM, bad video RAM, or video card itself.
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS OR EQUAL - overheating, or, again, bad RAM.

To eliminate the simplest cause, restart your computer into Safe Mode (keep tapping F8 key after restart, until menu appears), and run it from there for a while.
See, if it'll keep restarting.ok for now i'll try a stick of ram from another computer cause this video card is pretty new and all my temps seem to be ok.Just make sure, you use correct RAM.I haven't been ABLE to get another stick of ram but meanwhile i got another blue screen and under technical information it said,

STOP: 0X0000008E (0XC0000005, 0XF7743A09, 0XF7CF667C, 0X00000000)

SPTD.SYS - ADDRESS F7743A09 BASE AT F7726000 DATESTAMP 4612449B

I was wondering if thats relevant at all

Also by type of ram, do you mean like "DDR"? or does it get more specific than that?I'll bet it's some ram that's going bad.
If you have a cople sticks in there, remove one and then run it for awhile.

If it blue screens again, stop and replace it with the other stick.
Run that for awhile and see what happens.

Check this site out for some info on Memory testing.

Solve : How can I share an outlook 2007 calendar across windows XP home network??

Answer»

Hey all -

I share an office with two coworkers. We're starting a Church, and would like to share an outlook 2007 calendar across our network. We're wireless, with high-speed internet.

My understanding thus far is that it's best done with IIS service installed, but that it only comes with XP PRO. Then, I found that if you have a windows 2000 install disk, you can install the service from there, but I don't have a Windows 2000 disk.

Is there ANY way you guys know that I can share an outlook 2007 calendar, without costing me? Like I said, we're a new Church, and don't have any money right now.

Thanks in ADVANCE for any and all help.

I may not even have time to finish this poHAHAHA!

I know exactly what you meaActually, that article requires microsoft exchange server. I don't have money for that. Is there any other way you guys know of? I have a 'server' on the network, with a shared 500 gb DRIVE, and a 'shared documents' folder.

I'm running XP Home on two computers, and Vista on two computers. The server is one of the Home computers.

Is there any open-source software that would allow for this? Am I simply out of LUCK?

Just to let you know, that what happened to you, is not unusual in any pre-NT Windows version, like Win 98. Some newly installed programs will overwrite particular .dll file with newer version, which Windows will read as incorrect version, giving you an error.
Unfortunately, in Win 98, there is no way to prevent it.

Solve : Sony Vaio -- hit the wrong key?

Answer»

i hit some KEY on my Sony Vaio and it's making a 'u' a 4 and a "k" a 2, for EXAMPLE. The far left LIGHT next to the Caps lock is lit. Help!
look for the key probably in the top right corner..."Num LK" that is what you hit..do it again it will solve your problem. On many laptops, you have to press and hold the "Fn" key then press the corresponding F key (F1-F12) that releases then numlock. This key is labeled "Number Lock", "NumLk", or with a picture of a keypad.

Since I don't know specifically what Vaio you're using, that's about all the help I can provide. If your laptop doesn't have a "Fn" key, CONSULT your user's manual. It will tell you how to turn on and off the number lock or keypad function.

And if you're really still stuck after all of that, try this: Some laptops will respond to an external keyboard's numlock key being pressed. Plug one in, press the numlock, unplug it.Hey quaxo. Where the heck have you been?haha here and there. Been really busy with WORK, my girlfriend's visa, this and that. How is your girlfriend's friend, means, my girlfriend doing?I think I always had to hold the Fn key and then press the NumLk key.

Solve : Twisted Pair Cable help?

I have a Q/A about Making Twisted Pair Cable??

When you STRIP the cable open you have 8. wires and you have to pair them up.
So you end up with 4. pairs of wires I get this.

But this is whare I need help every pair of wires you must Twist and then get the next pair of wires and Twist them.

This is sapost to keep the Data from getting crosed over.

But the whole cable that you did not cu open are the wires Twisted inside ?
And if not why??

PS...
I know I can buy a Twisted Pair Cable I am just a geek
ThanksThe twisted pairs are not twisted around each other in this picture

I think I know what you mean. Are you trying to make you're own lan cables?
If so, this is what I do.

I cut the desired length I need or want.
Make sure you add a few more feet so you can move your PC around when you want / need to.

I then strip back about 3 or 4 inches of the PLASTIC covering so I ahve all the wires removed.

You'll see that they're already twisted.

untwist the wires and then group then in this order.
Holding the wire in your fingers place the wires starting from the left and moving right

Orange / White
Orange
Green / White
Blue
Blue / White
Green
Brown / White
Brown

Make sure they're nice and straight and held firmly between your fingers and cut them so they're about 3/4 of an inch long sticking out of the outter plastic or at least just above your finger tips.

Take an RJ45 connector with the tab on the underneath slide it over the wires and slide the wires into the little slots firmly.

Holding it all securely take the RJ45 crimping tool and CRIMP the connector firmly.
Follow the instrcutions again for the other end.

It makes it much easier to test this if you have a Cable tester.... that takes some of the guess work out when you don't make a connection in the RJ45 or miss wire it.

Check this website also http://www.groundcontrol.com/galileo/ch5-ethernet.htm

i strongly recommend not making your own ethernet cable. why?

because ethernet cable (cat 5) is specifically designed and engineered for transferring data at a certain max speed. the diameter of the copper wire, the insulation around each copper wire, the insulation around the entire group of wires, and the varying degrees of twists around each pair all effect the max speed of the cable.

But this is whare I need help every pair of wires you must Twist and then get the next pair of wires and Twist them.

do not twist them more, when hooking up to an RJ45 connector or outlet, try to limit the amount that you untwist. as i stated earlier, they are twisted at varying degrees for a reason.I totally agree with Homer. If you making cables just for fun or for your own desire, cool... If it's for something in the server room.... Buy it.... when that SQL server LOSES the connection because your home made cable wasn't good......You don't want to stand in the VP's office and explain to him that you saved $4.00

But is a good practice to learn how to make your own cables and it actually does come in handy every once in awhile.

it seems i was not very clear, when i stated "i strongly recommend not making your own ethernet cable" i meant the actual cable. by all means it is fine to crimp on your own RJ45 connectors.

Solve : Video Display HELP?

Answer»

I am running WIN xp pro and I do a lot of Video Editting but I have a Q/A about Aspect Ratios and Pixels???

I always do video to be seen on a TV with a 4:3 Ratio

Now if you capture Video to the computer every program says NTSC 4:3 Ratio will be 720 X 480 Pixels

Now WARE I get lost is if you have a VHS Tape and play it on a 20 inch CRT TV or a 60 inch CRT TV it is still a 4:3 image and looks the same.

And I understand that 4:3 means the image will be 4 times as wide as it is High.
But how does the computer see it as a set pixel size like 720 x 480?Quote

And I understand that 4:3 means the image will be 4 times as wide as it is High.
No, it means a ratio of 4/3. For example, 100 x 75 would be an image where the ratio of width to height is 4/3. So, it's 1.33 times as wide as it is high.

So, the numbers you got, "NTSC 4:3 Ratio will be 720 X 480 Pixels", are not quite accurate. 720 x 480 is not a 4:3 ratio, close, but not exactly. 640 x 480 would be a 4:3 ratio. 720 x 540 would be a 4:3 ratio.

I don't know. Someone else will probably have an answer.Full screen NTSC dvd footage is usually 720x480 and fullscreen PAL dvd footage is usually 720x576. This footage is supposed be shown on a 4:3 TV... but these resolutions aren't 4:3 mathematically. The reason for this (I'm simplifying here) is due to the fact that TVs have rectangular pixels and when you show the above resolutions on a TV they will look 4:3.

In practical terms it means that when you look at dvd resolution IMAGES (720x480, 720x576) on a PC monitor in programs like VirtualDubMod they do not have the correct pixel aspect ratio so they look a tiny bit squished/stretched in comparison to the way they look on a TV. This is normal. Some programs will correct this when they are displaying the footage by resizing it so it looks right but if you are viewing it with a "Square Pixels" option then it will look slightly wrong.

Solve : Audio is not clear?

Answer»

:(I have xp home and RAM is 386 and speed is 1.2

when watching youtube the sound is not good and sort of not very clear but when I adjust the PICTURE for smaller viewing the sound clears up and it is fine. I probably need a better audio codec. Is anyone having the same problem?

takethetime
thefonz Some additional RAM won't hurt the issue...

Assuming you're watching YouTube videos on a cable or DSL connection, there should be no reason your connection can't keep up. Slow YouTube videos seem to be a common problem, with YouTube video loading wait times becoming a problem that Google should be able to stay on top of. Without doing some network forensics to rule out your particular connection as the source of the slowdown, there's one free tool that should help make watching YouTube videos a smooth experience. I recommend installing SpeedBit Video Accelerator for YouTube, which pre-buffers videos and makes them playback in a more reliable way. As an added bonus, if you ALSO watch videos on places like MySpace and Facebook, you should see some improvement there as well.

Speedbit can be found here. http://www.topdrawerdownloads.com/download/104956

I also agree that adding some more ram would be a big help and not just with this. If you added another 512 you wouldn't believe the difference you'll see.

Solve : XP can't find file that shows as being there?

Answer»

Compaq Presario running XP Home for several years suddenly won't boot. I get a Windows alert box saying "Unable to locate object lsass.exe". But when I used NTFS4Dos to check the files on the hard-drive, the lsass file was present in Windows/System32 at the normal size.

Anyone have any idea why Windows SAYS it can't find a file that's clearly there?

We can't boot from an XP cd because like a lot of recent laptops that came pre-loaded with XP, the mfr didn't provide a *boot* CD. They did provide a "Quick Recovery" cd, but that seems to only be able to re-format the hard-drive, which WOULD destroy all personal data since our last backup.

Chkdsk shows that the HD is fine, BTW.

We've been using AVG free EDITION w/ automatic updates, so I'm not overly worried about it being a virus. But stumped as to what the problem *is*. Thanks! It should boot to an XP CD...
Insert the XP CD . power down and re-boot.
You will get a prompt to Press any key to boot from CD...hit a key.
XP will now be entering setup...LET it run.
At the first screen prompt press R to load the Recovery Console.
It will now load the files needed...this takes a little time.
You will next be asked which XP install you are working on hit Enter
There will be a prompt for an admin password if you don't use one hit Enter.
The RC will now load and will take you to a command prompt window.
Type in fixboot and hit Enter...
Remove the XP CD and re-boot.Thanks again, Patio. We're canvassing our friends, and hopefully one of 'em will have an original XP disk. I do want to confirm my understanding that XP computers can boot from any XP disk, as some users have said you have to match version and SP.

Got any ideas re that aspect?Any XP machine will boot to any XP CD...however if you are going to clear the Registration process you will need to install the same version as your liscense is tied to...

Solve : Windows XP-Home won't startup?

Answer»

When I turn on the computer it starts to go through it's startup and when it GETS to windows starting up it restarts the whole computer and does the same thing over and over (occationally SHOW a screen to us the last known working startup) which does nothing. I think it's a hard drive problem (5 YEARS old). My old computer is doing the exact same thing. It is also about that old or older. It will start to boot up and the log on screen comes on for about TWO or three seconds and then it starts to reboot over and over again. I tried to load windows xp again but it won't load.Welcome to CH!
