Solve : Don't know where to start...!?

Answer»

Hey there,

I only realised I have a problem with my PC when I tried to start it as a normal this morning and it went into a 3 stage booting process - saying that the first stage was dirty and it would work through it. After the 3 stages it said it would restart the COMPUTER. It did this and went into the normal WINDOWS XP screen, which after a few moments went back to the same 3 stage booting process. This HAPPENED a few times before I gave up - it seems to be on some sort of loop.

The computer is about 4 years old and I have a new LAPTOP arriving on Monday but I've got a load of documents I intended to save to a memory stick in order to transfer it to the new machine.

Can anyone help - I really know NOTHING about computers once they're on and working!

Also if I do manage to get into the old computer will moving files on to the stick and then onto the new laptop be a problem??

Any help will be GREATLY appreciated.
StephenStephen, please provide more information. Click here.turn your computer on whilst pressing F8 hopefully a selection will come up allowing you to select safe mode

Solve : Nothing works or pops up. Except internet explorer.?

Answer»

My laptop is a Windows XP, and for about a MONTH or even longer, there is some kind of virus on here, that I do not know what it is. My applications on the desktop, like songs, this powerpoint I made, a few other programs, all turned to one type of icon, and when I try to open it, it says to search for the file via INTERNET, which then the internet says it is an uknown file. But I am still able to open, internet explorer, microsoft outlook, but EVERYTHING else says that. Also on the control panel, when I try to do the volume, or add/remove programs it won't come up AT ALL. And I need to update my computer, and take files off that aren't needed anymore.
ANYWAYS, if you could please please help me, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. You may want to start here and post the logs in the Computer Viruses and Spyware forum.

Solve : Annoying popup?

Answer»

How do I stop the popup that says "This version of windows is out of date and needs to be upgraded?"

I have Windows XP Home edition SP1 and I don't WANT to upgrade to SP2.

How can I stop the popup?Bones92 ......... Why on earth wouldn't you want to "update" to SP2 ?

dl65 The only way to stop is to update!! SP2 is good....... Go legit.
There's no REASON to not be RUNNING SP2 as it is a major OS upgrade...not just a SECURITY patch as it's been called since day one.

Solve : Triple Booting?

Answer»

I need to triple boot three operating systems in VMware Server.

The OS are: 98SE, NT 4.0, and 2000 Pro.

My question is: What is the correct order of installation?

Several sources told me that it was non-windows and older versions of windows first, followed by newer versions of windows. Following this, it would be NT, 98SE, then 2K. I tried this, but it did not work.98se is based on ms-dos and therefore "older" technology than NT, so needs to go first.

https://www.ms2.cn/technet/archive/ntwrkstn/tips/ncccrtdu.mspx#EIE

I'm having some major issues with this.

1) I install 98SE first
--I run FDISK and create a 10GB partition, format it using FAT32
--Run 98 setup and everything goes fine

2) I install NT
--This is where my problem is. I get a continuous setup loop. It goes so far, then restarts my computer. Gets to the same spot, restarts my computer. Gets to the same spot, restarts my computer.

How do I fix the NT setup loop?Quote

It goes so far/Gets to the same spot/Gets to the same spot, restarts my computer.

Er, maybe you could tell us where "so far" and "the same spot" actually are?

What install media are you using?

This is a VMWare virtual machine you are installing to? And that's what gets restarted each time?

1. My recollection is there is a restriction on how large the "system" partition can be when installing NT 4.0 from the distribution media. (Or is it the partition where the operating system is installed to?). I believe this is either 2 GB or 4 GB. Probably 2 GByte because I believe you want to format it FAT16.

You loaded Windows 98 SE first onto your primary partition, a 10 GByte partition formated FAT32. This "active" primary partition is now the "system" volume, your "C:" Drive.

A couple of mistakes here. Your system volume is too large. It is also formatted in a file system NT 4.0 can't read (only reads FAT16 or NTFS). Suggest you start over.

2. Recommendation. Suggest the following:

a. Create Primary Partition, 2 GBytes maximum formatted FAT16 to be your system volume, the c: drive.
b. Create Extended Partition to almost use rest of hard drive (leave couple MegaBytes free)
c. Within Extended partition create 10 GByte logical drive formatted FAT32 to hold Windows 98 SE in d: drive.
d. Do "custom" installation of Windows 98 SE to install operating system to "D:\Windows" directory. The system files needed to boot Windows 98 SE (about four files; msdos.sys, config.sys, command.com, ) will automatically install to the C: drive.
e. Create another logical volume within extended partition for Windows NT4.0 installation (Format as FAT16 or NTFS; your choice, but Windows 98 SE can read FAT16, not NTFS). Install Windows NT4.0. Like Windows 98 SE, its system boot files will also automatically install to C: drive.
f. Create another logical volume within extended partition for Windows 2000 Pro (Format as FAT16, FAT32, or NTFS). Install Windows 2000 Pro to this volume. Its system boot files will also automatically install to system volume c:.

NOTE: If you want a "common" data volume, it should be formatted in a file system all three systems can read (i.e. FAT16). Might want to place it after c: volume (as d: volume?) so all operating systems can read it and reference all preceding volumes with same letters. If your operating system doesn't recognize a file system (FAT16, FAT32, NTFS, or whatever), it won't assign drive letter to it.

3. So...

Primary Partition (Active)
C: System_Vol 2 GByte maximum (FAT16)
Extended Partition
D: Data_Vol 2 GByte (FAT16)
E: Win98_SE 10 GByte (FAT32)
F: WinNT_40 ?? GByte (FAT16 or NTFS; probably NTFS?)
G: Win2000_Pro ?? GByte (FAT16, FAT32, or NTFS; probably NTFS?)98SE and NT 4.0 installed fine, but I keep getting an INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE stop error code.Quote from: Alaster on February 29, 2008, 01:34:03 PM
98SE and NT 4.0 installed fine, but I keep getting an INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE stop error code.

When? When you boot Windows 98 SE? When you boot Windows NT 4.0? When you boot Windows 2000 Pro?

Do any of the operating systems successfully boot?

For background information can you tell us how your "simulated" hard disks are laid out? Disk drive number, primary partition(s), extended partition with logical voumes? What is in each volume, formatted with what file system, and what is the size of the volume?

It might be helpful if you post the exact message text and numbers from your stop error code screen. We can do google SEARCHES on "exact" substrings to look for cause and solution.

My virtual machine experience is limited. My Windows NT 4.0 KNOWLEDGE is limited. I just know from research for a classmate that his Windows NT 4.0 installation failure was because his partition/volume was larger than his version of NT 4.0 could handle. Sounds like this was the case for you also. I believe later service packs of NT 4.0 supported larger installation partitions. There is also a patch that could be applied during installation for this (but never tried it).

Solve : System32 File Opening Upon Start-up?

Answer»

My apologies if this has already been covered...I am VERY unskilled with computers and what the search function here revealed did not seem to match my prob.

I have a Dell XPS desktop pentium 4 (windows XP home edition version 2002 service pack 2) and upon turning it on the "System32" file opens up across my desk top. It does this everytime and takes about 5 minutes to do so. The "system32" bar in the bottom left next to the START bar will flash from orange to blue for a minute or two and will finally go solid blue and stay so. If I try to do ANYTHING prior to this file opening and the bar going solid blue the SYSTEM locks up and I'm forced to turn off the computer and start from scratch.

Once it has opened fully and the bar is solid blue I am able to close the file and all is fine from there on.

Both Dell and others have told me this is more than likely caused by a missing punctuation mark somewhere in my registry...but not to go near it unless I know what I'm doing...which I do not.

I have tried 6 different registry cleaning software products and tho they all show many errors and clean/fix them it does not solve this problem.

Dell tells me that the only THING left would be to wipe my hard drive 100% and re-load everything from scratch...which scares me due to my lack of computer knowledge.

Once again, sorry if this is an old topic...

UPDATE:
Thanks everyone.

While awaiting a response I decided to just go ahead and follow the directions I had regarding my registry.

I found several lines which began and ended with quotation marks and edited out those marks...and there seemed to be an extra space between the last letter in one word and the "-" following it which I removed from another line. All is well now after having this prob for a long time.

The directions I had, mentioned fixing any wrong or missing words in the string (like I would know if they were...lol) and then said to remove any null symbols such as ""...
Dummy me I thought by null they meant two quotation marks with nothing in between them...seems they meant ANY quotation marks.

Took my best guess and did it...was beginning to think I would have to wipe the hard drive anyway...so why not give it a shot. And it worked.

Thanks again for the help...just love this site : )

P.S. I'm saving your ideas on this prob to my documents file in case it should begin again. You can try this, go to Start, Run, and type msconfig. Select selective startup, and click the startup tab. Look in the Startup Item list, (first column), and see if the system32 file itself is in the list by name. You will see some things that run under the command column in the system32, but look for system32 in the Startup item list. If it is there uncheck the box next to it and click apply, then ok to restart.

Hope this helps!! You may have some infection....

Solve : scanner and camera wizard?

Answer»

When connecting a camera to my computer the scanner and camera wizard opens. As you PROCEED through the steps you are asked to name the FILES and FOLDER for the pictures you are transferring. The names of old files and folders are STILL there from previous transfers. Is there a way to DELETE these past file and folder names from the scanner and camera wizard. The files have already been deleted from "My Pictures" from my hard drive. The old names remain in the scanner and camera wizard.

Solve : Cannot remote in to server, sudden issue?

Answer»

After months of daily connections I get this:

Remote Desktop Disconneted

The client could not connect to the remote computer.

Remote connections might not be enabled or the computer might be too
busy to accept new connections. It is also possible that NETWORK problems
are preventing your connection.

Please try connecting again later. If the problem continues to occur, contact your administrator.

So thats the message.
Any help would be really appreciated!
You may have open sessions on the server. Is this a Windows server in the Admin mode? If this is the case the machine will only except 2 connections. Take a look at the machine and disconnect one or both of the sessions.

I cannot find how to check open connections. This server was recently set to be our web server and it looks like symantec caught some hack TOOL entries. Could this be apart of my issues?

Update: Yes it is server 2kIt is possible that the machine was hacked and is the reason you are having TROUBLE. Can you reboot the machine? Is the machine local to you? Can you login without a remote session?

Rebooting the machine will FLUSH the old connections.

This may help as well....

http://www.akadia.com/services/terminal_server.html

I did reboot and got a bunch of DOS looking prompts with a weird white bar at the bottom. It started giving me regedit errors as well. The top of the prompts say killER". I have my Symantec doing a full system scan RIGHT now, but if anyone else knows what could be going on?Sounds like your machine has been hacked. I would pull the data you want off of it and do a full rebuild.

Once a machine has been taken over you can never be sure you have cleaned it completely.

Sorry for the delayed reply. I took your advice and pulled off my data and did a full wipe and reload. I appreciate the help.

Solve : Windows ME Explorer Search function broken?

Answer»

Gear: ASUS P3V133 motherboard, 1 Ghz. CPU
1 Gb. memory, 80 Gb. HDD, 1/2 capacity available
Other system components have been in place for some time w/out hints of the problem I'll describe.
OS fully updated, system frequently scandisked and defragged - it generally runs well. Has had Norton Anti-Virus running since first powerup, , essentially never a virus problem. Norton Utilities since powerup, always functioned.
Just a few days ago, I attempted to run Norton WinDoctor and stalled out. Warned of a Registry corruption which WinDoctor couldn't remedy. At about the same time, I found that the Windows Explorer Search utility wouldn't - insert a search parameter and it just sits there. I use Search constantly - could I have worn it out (grin)...
I'm considering a re-installation of WinME - that used to work with earlier versions of OS, also considering upgrading to XP - for various reasons - but will stand by for any and all hints on this subject.
My WinMe disk is the upgrade version, should I be directed to go looking for replacement files. If you need any further info to assist in troubleshooting this mess, please let me know.
dogboy Did you try System Restore?Restore?..I was afraid you'd ask me that...Unfortunately, when the "broken search" symptom cropped up, I was already in the middle of an acrimonious exchange with Symantec (long story), and between trying to ferret out an odd Registry complaint, installing and uninstalling AVG, plus the incumbent cleansing of the system, I'd wiped (I believe) the Restore files which might be of help. At any rate, following your reminder, I attempted a few Restores back to a period which might have the uncorrupted search facility, but no joy: no Restore. Unable. SO:
Since the main use at present for the problem box is maintaining my Quicken files, I'm going to do a backup of Quicken, replace the HDD with a 3-month old clone drive, refresh the Quicken files in that one, and see how it GOES. If that drive runs the Windows search tool (yeah, remember where this all started?), then I'll get organized toward a complete refurbishment of the box with a view toward Win XP-ing it, as I believe I mentioned earlier.
The lesson for me to learn, I GUESS, is to handle one problem at a time, 'cause when they overlap, as happened in this instance, there might not be a fallback. I'm hoping that the Clone option might just save the day.
More comments?

dogboyI wish you luck, and keep us posted.
More comments? Only one...stay away from Norton as far, as possible. The Clone option did save the day - albeit as insurance which wasn't really necessary after all. As previously mentioned, I was employing the problem tower mainly as a host for my Quicken program, as I wasn't too confident that this old program (Quicken 2000 + whatever updates Intuit threw in) would make it in Win XP, and I had a Clone of the main HDD dating back to September. So I did a backup of Quicken (up to the minute), updated the clone files, then back to the primary hard drive, and did a Windows ME re-installation.
All went well - at least I was able to recover the Search function, and there doesn't APPEAR to be any significant change or loss of service in the overall setup. Seems like a lot of trouble, I suppose, but when looking at migrating a host (around 30-odd Gb) of files from slowbox to fastbox, I wouldn't attempt it without the Search ready to hand.
I'm still disappointed that there isn't more information to allow pinpointing the .exe or .ini stage of some of these Windows functions, but perhaps down the road someone will look at the archives and know the answer - and POST. I hope to be at the same email address and username, patiently waiting. Regards to all who had anything to add, as, of COURSE that's what makes these forums work.

dogboy. Thank you for update.

if there anyway i can delete the stuff, plz let me knowHi there

You need to boot then access your bios to change the boot order SETTINGS for your system so that it checks your CD drive first, then the HD.

In order to access your bios, you'll need to press a key before the HD boot kicks in. The key you need to press depends on your system.

Have a LOOK here to see if you can see yours.maybe the lens of your drive is not working anymore... so check it.What Windows version?

I need service pack 2 to download Itunes, Windows Media Player 11 and to play Age Of Empires III.

So i downloaded it off the interent and it downloaded fine. As i tried to OPEN it up, it comes up with a message:

C:\Documents and Settings\Jesse\Desktop\WindowsServer2003.WindowsXP-KB914961-SP2-x64-ENU.exe is not a valid Win32 application.

And that has made me confused as anything....Please Help

I bought AOE for like 100$ and i really WANT it to work.Is this where you downloaded it from?

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/how.mspxyes it is

whys that?
NOTHING to WORRY about, just checking.

TRY updating SP1 with all available high priority updates first from here

Select express & install all updates it suggests. After any installation, re-run the updater again until you get the 'no high-priority updates for your computer are available' message.

Then try to install SP2 again

Solve : monitor screen shrinkage, what the heck??

Answer»

Hello everyone, I'm new here, I've got a problem I can't figure out.
The other morning I started my laptop, I had shut it clear down the NIGHT before because I wanted it to reboot. I'm not SURE if it installed an update of some sort.
When it restarted it the picture on the monitor was about 8 by 10 inches and you can't move the cursor out of that box, there is about 2 inches of black all around the picture.
My screen resolution was SET at 1280 by 768 where it had been for a long time.
All the icons and text is really small. If I change my screen resolution to 1400 by 1050 it FILLS the screen up but everything (text, icons, ect.) is still real small.
I have tried everything with the control panel that I can find, no luck.
I tried to do a system restore but it wouldn't work.
This is a Gateway laptop with windows XP, it is about 4 years old and has been a great computer.
If anyone knows how to fix this thanks in advance.
I am getting a headache every time I try to read anything on this screen.
Mike Try booting into Safe Mode (F8) going to device manager / delete the video and monitor drivers and reboot.

Alan <>< 1. Model Number. What's the model number for that Gateway laptop?

2. Display Properties. What "tabs" do you have on the advanced settings tab of your display properties windows?

Right click blank area of desktop (blank, not black), context menu should appear.
Left click on "Properties" item, Display Properties window should appear.
Left click on "Settings" tab. Settings tab should move to front.
Left click on "Advanced" button, ADDITIONAL window should appear.

Is there a tab similiar to "Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelerator Driver"?

Someone with similiar problem got lucky browsing around in the dusty corners of his display properties settings... See here

Thanks for the replies and the link. That was the same problem.
A dusty corner indeed!

What happened prior to this that you were resorting to an FDisk and what hardware might you have in that machine ? ?

Do have an internal video adapter in addition to your video card. If so pull the card out and see if everything works and then yes it would be your card. Other wise if you have one on hand swap it out and see what happens. yes swap your card will help you what part of your computer is not working that's one FACTOR, and if doesnot work try get some technician it well done.

I have a folder labeled KDS. In this folder there is a huge tree and eventually it breaks down into about 2000 folders each have about 4-20 files in each. There labelled something like this 003443d4.kob. They all end in .kob.

I NEED a way to find every .kob that is 0 KB's. I need to DELETE every .KOB that is in this KDS folder that is 0 KB's cause they cause problems. Can anyone think of how I can find every .KOB that is 0 KB's.

I've tried using Find under the start menu and I can't figure out how to do it. If i set the size to at most 1 KB it pulls up all the 1 KB's and 0 KB's....and then says your search needs to refined cause there was to many results. I GUESS NT has a limit of 10,000 results.

How do I get just the 0 KB'S!? One thing I can think of is to put 0 in the search field. If that is no help then you might try if all the files are not in the same folder, limit the search to a certain folder then use the detail view so you can see the file size and delete them yourself.

Solve : Computer is messed up, PLEASE HELP!!!?

Answer»

okay seriously, my computer is acting really weird, i can get to pages pretty easily online, but when i ENTER a search in say youtube it wont LOAD the search page it just gets halfway and gives up, i try to go to facebook.com and it just doesnt work, but myspace and stuff works fine, its weird, i would really appreciate some help...PLEASEWhich web browser are you USING?

What Security/anti spyware do you have installed?

Have you tried cleaning your system with something like ccleaner?i have firefox and i recently ran spyemergency, i use ccleaner but that doesnt help, and IVE scanned my computer online using trend housecall, i have mcafee and ive scanned with that, no scans came up with anything and ccleaner jsut cleans out cookies and crapHave you tried the same sites using IE to see if it's a browser problem?its not that, i tried using ie, and in a side note, i deleted my original account which was the first one and therefore the administrator, and just moved all my files to another account, i can see how thats bad, but it freed up space which i was trying to do, some things just wont work tho, does anyone know how i can make this account the real administrator... but this issue is more pressing, youtube and other sites just wont load, i have to keep refreshing, and MAYBE the page will finally loadRepair Install of XP

Follow the directions step by step...im looking at the instructions and its sending mixed signals, is it gonna delete my entire harddrive and just have the windows xp like when i bought the computer?READING through it

A Repair Install will replace the system files with the files on the XP CD used for the Repair Install. It will leave your applications and settings intact, but Windows updates will need to be reapplied.

Suggests that it's just windows that gets restored to it's original state.

Solve : any help with retrieving music library pretty please :)?

Answer»

hiya there

yeah SEEM to have misplaced my music files...am sure i have not deleted them as that would take some doing. ( have so many) the folders are still there physically but on opening, the TRACKS come up on the playlist but have a blatant red cross beside them., and or "file does not exist"

found a stack of my music files on a software prog that ive recently installed - WinUtilites. am pretty sure ive used one of this prog's tools and have tempoararily moved them...compressed, archived them or something, as there is a huge list of single tracks, files. but theres 1,000's of them.

as ive a rather large music library that i dont want to lose, as theres lots of music which i havent burnt coz its not my thing...but i love being able to swap tunes so although i have cd copies of most of the music i listen too. would really like to retieve all the folders that i have ripped

have had to restore system b4 so thats an obvious choice, so if i have to do this is there a quick way of simply restoring the folders...without my having to do each folder on an individual basis, when transfering to "my music" as this would take a mammoth session, but will do it if theres no other way. oh have tried restoring and after 3 attempts with differing dates for this month havent been able to restore. i think coz i havent actually created restore date for some while but i will do regulaly form now on.

any help, guidance or remarks concerning this dilema would be gratefully recieved and i promise not to shoot the messenger ... even if its news i dont wanna hear/read

many thanx pple - CHIN CHINHi,
You could try using the Search function from your Start menu, it will give you the option of what to search for, or type in mp3. GOOD luck...I have a rather large collection myself & would have a fit if it disappeared.
Let us know if you find your music.Hello Szpixman

'ON a software program'? what do you mean? do you mean within a directory within WinUtilities programs directory? are the new MP3 files named? do the names match your old/missing MP3's?

Sounds like you have used WinUtilities to encrypt the files. Encrypted files will still be there but not accessable until you decrypt them. I was reading through the WinUtilities features & it does have an encryption utility.

Solve : Retrieving files after system restore?

Answer»

About a month ago I had to do a system restore because my computer was rebooting on startup. Computer is working fine now but I LOST some data that was on the desktop and the my documents folder. (I had assumed that since system restore said it protected data the my documents folder and desktop would have been safest since those were the default locations for saving things by software, but hey, that's what I get for breaking my rule to always read the manual)

So there's two things I'd like to fix. First I'd like to get the contents of the my documents folder back if possible, though to be honest I've already written these off as lost so no big deal here.

Secondly and more importantly, I had about 50 gigs of files that were on the desktop waiting to be backed up and archived on DVDs. While I don't care that much about whether or not I retrieve these (again, I've already written them off as lost), when checking for free space on my hard drive it says about 50 gigs more is taken up then I can find elsewhere on the computer. Thus I'm assuming that it was the files that were STASHED on the desktop. What is the easiest method of either retrieving these files, or getting my computer to acknowledge that they're gone so I can get my 50 gigs back?

And by the way I'm using WINDOWS XP. Quote

I had about 50 gigs of files that were on the desktop
Was it a shortcut to some folder, or...?No it wasn't a shortcut. I had a bunch of files in a single directory that I wanted to archive so before archiving them I created several folders on my desktop so I could ORGANIZE them by simply dragging the files to the new folders on my desktop. The computer crash that caused me to do the system restore occurred before I was done backing up these files so they were all still in the folders on my desktop which now no longer appear to be listed on my computer. I have already tried searching for the files, no results are returned and I have included hidden files in these searches. http://www.recuva.com

Before you spend any amout of time with that, wait for Broni's opinion of the idea.

If nothing else, at least it is free. It's worth to try...Neat program, but unfortunately it wasn't able to solve the problem. That's strange because whenever I restore, my documents remain.

What about trying the 'undo my last restoration' option within restore?

I don't know if a month ago will be too far back, but it can't hurt to try (just get a restore failed message).

If you can do it & the documents reappear, you could back them up externally then REVERT back to your current state.

Create a new restore point, then backup all recently created documents (the ones you have made since the last restoration) just incase.

Then try 'undo my last restoration' within restore.

If your missing files are there, great.

Revert back to the new restore point you just created either way...

Good luck!Quote from: bf1453 on March 02, 2008, 08:52:34 AM

Solve : Why do my desktop icon change positions when I startup??

Answer»

Recently, when I turn my computer on, the icons on my desktop appear in different places than where I painstakingly put them. What would be the cause and how can I eradicate it?

My computer:
XP Pro VERSION 2002, SP2; AMD Athlon XP 2400+ 1.99GHz, 1.5 GB RAM, nVidia GeForce FX 5200, Firefox 2.0.0.11 Try right clicking on the desktop to make SURE everything under "Arrange Icons by" is unchecked.
There's:

Arange Icons By -> Align to Grid
Arange Icons By -> Auto Arrange
Arange Icons By -> Name

size, ETC. It sounds like maybe one of those is checked. Let me know how it goes!

-Aaron
www.weknowerrors.com A free wiki for computer problems.Sometimes, it just happens. I use DIManagerX: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Desktop-Enhancements/Icons-Related/DIManager.shtml
Even, if your icons positions got messed up, one click, and they're BACK where they're suppose to be.Someone told me it might have something to do with my screen resolution. I have settings on the side of my Gateway LCD monitor that are "user", "WEB", "picture", "movie", and a couple of others. If thay change the resolution, maybe that's the cause. If you change screen resolution, icons will be bigger, or smaller, but they won't change positions.

Solve : Really quick fix - margins?

Answer»

Hey there. I'm sure this problem seems really miniscule and unimportant, but this problem with my margins has been bugging the crap out of me. Mostly because I've TRIED relentlessly to solve it, but I must be searching in all the wrong settings tabs. I'm running Word 2003 and the point at which you begin TYPING begins at the top of the page, rather than leaving space. Here's a picture of my problem.

http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg268/ryanfetus/help.jpg

Once again, I'm sure this problem is really dumb to you all, but I'd really appreciate some help with this. Sorry if this has been asked before. Thanks a ton guys! That is a feature of the program. It removes extra unimportant white space like top and bottom margins and the white space after a page break. I don't like it myself until a page break takes out a large portion of the page.
Hover your mouse around the top of the page until you see it change as demonstrated in the attached picture. Double click. That should fix that problem. I had to put the mouse back in myself; it won't look exactly like that. This is with Word 2007, but it is the same thing.

[file cleanup - saving space - attachment deleted by admin]Ryanfetus - Welcome to the CH forums.

I don't use Word but am almost sure that by clicking on the Format tab at the top of the screen you will find you can set the margins to whatever. Seem to remember that Ctrl+F8 also opened the pop-up window for setting margins.

If I've gotten it wrong I apologize in advance.

Good luck.Wow, that was rediculously simple, i fixed it with a single click. That was bugging the crap out of me!! Thanks a ton for your help. You're welcome - thanks for coming back at us to advise of your success..
Hi Ryan

I know you have resolved your problem, but I was wondering why I don't see the left side margin selector on yours? is it stuck right at the top?

It's much easier to just click on the vertical margin slider (works the same way as the horizontal one):

As you can see, when I hover the mouse over the part on the left where the shaded area meets the white area, the cursor changes into arrows to allow me to manually adjust it up/down.The problem was hiding white space, not the margins.Quote from: Yitzach on March 02, 2008, 11:44:42 PM

The problem was hiding white space, not the margins.

Excuse me, but the 'white space' is created by the margin markers.

Hey there. I'm sure this problem seems really miniscule and unimportant, but this problem with my margins has been bugging the crap out of me.
Yes, but he wanted to see the white space, not possible to MAKE it appear with a single click. Margin adjustment is a click and drag. His attached picture was that of an arrow pointing to a cursor really close to the top edge without white space. And I'm PRETTY sure that the hiding white space is not in any of the tabs, else it is not in the obvious locations because the problem was not properly defined in his head. Problem being no margins, not hiding white space.
I will say no more on the subject as the solution has been found, the problem was marginal and unimportant, and this is probably filling his inbox up with unwanted mail.
Whoever can, please lock this thread as no more can be or should be said.

Solve : CD-KEY IS NOT WORKING?

Answer»

I own a small internet cafe in our town, I have all the license required, I'm running WindowsXP version 2002 service pack 2. I think it is a nature of the cafe that you are infected of virus any time. Every time that my computer is infected i reformat and reinstall all the software required, after 30 days i need to activate my WINDOWS. Before i can activate it, but now i can't activate my windows anymore, it say"s "According to our records, the number of times you can activatewindows with this product keyhas been exceeded. Please enter a different product key, and then click "retry". what is that? any one have an idea what shall i do this problem? You'll have to call Micro$oft to get new key.i try it man thak's for the advice...You're welcome The key you get from Microsoft will likely have similar restrictions as the key you already have, or it will be the same key but you can use it for a limited number more times. And then you will have to call Microsoft up again for more rights. Preventing the reinstall is therefore a very good idea because "Micro$oft" will sell you a new key or more copy rights with the current key.
I will admit that I am not entirely familiar with the business of internet cafes and so I don't know how extreme you can go to keep from having sick computers. It is recommended that all computers have a virus blocker/scanner and that the scanner should be ran a regular intervals. If you don't have one and/or don't run it already, there is something WRONG with you. Judging by the use of the singular computer, I'm guessing that this is a company computer for bookkeeping and the like. That computer should be isolated from your costumer computers.
If it is costumer computer you are referring to, I think you shouldn't allow costumers to store data/programs on your computer hard drives. I recommend a program called Deep Freeze. Deep Freeze will not allow any changes to the state of the hard drive whatsoever, with the exception of physically MOVING data around. No settings can be altered and no data stored unless you, the admin, say otherwise. Deep Freeze is made by Faronics.
If costumers want to store data on your computers, you could sell hard drive space on a server that is scanned at very frequent intervals, like on the hour.Thank's for the advice, i have a Deep freeze, i installed it on my computer, but after 4-5 months of used, that said software doesn't work, i EXPERIENCE it many time, i try to store files on my drive and restart the computer, when i open the computer that said files doesn't disappear, why? do you have any idea? the deep freeze is on the "BOOT FROZEN"My only KNOWLEDGE of the software is on the receiving end of program. And the two semesters of Tech Support with my school district. In that 9 months, I don't recall a Deep Freeze failing. And if one did, I was only there for a seventh of the day and I couldn't work on it because I was a student. Call up either Faronics or Emmett Tech Support.
Your long sentence is not exceedingly helpful. I think there are some comma splices and some misused words; my English teacher was not very fond of either of those. If I read it right, it looks like after 4-5 months of use, the program stopped working either by report of a program or discovery of extra stuff. You then moved the files off of the afflicted computer and rebooted. The files did not stay away on the other computer. Sounds like you cut and pasted and that got turned into a copy and paste. I think something lies because the files were restored as a functioning Deep Freeze would do. It is possible that SOMEONE guessed the password right or the admin didn't turn Deep Freeze back on correctly.sorry for the bad English

Having a "NTLDR is missing" error- I managed to get my system back by rebooting from the Windows XP CD Rom and copying across some files to replaced a couple of corrupt files, HOWEVER now every time I start the computer, I keep getting Delivery Service Manager error message - RELATING to KService.exe .
Message reads - The instruction at "0x004cs5f8"reference memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be read.

I'm clueless as to what this means and more importantly, what to do?

Solve : Memory Module??

Answer»

Since you will need to OPEN the case anyway in ORDER to test the modules, I would just go ahead and open it.

Remember to turn off the COMPUTER first and take anti-static precautions before touching any components. You can discharge yourself by touching a piece of grounded metal.Okay.

Please give me a little time for this. I will post as soon as I get things put together again. You just take all the time you need. We will still be here when you're done.Hello, I'm back

Here are my results:

I have 2 memory modules.

I have tested them both, one at a time-

First RAM removed from computer-
Total memory- 128mb
Memory bank 0- not installed (error message still appears when booting up)
Memory bank 1- 128mb
DRAM SPD status- invalid

Second RAM removed from computer-
Total memory- 32mb
Memory bank 0- 32mb
Memory bank 1- Not installed
DRAM SPD status- valid
No error message when booting up

Switching Memory modules places didn't help.
Right now, both modules are inside the computer. I tried to leave the 32mb RAM by itself, but my computer became really, really slow loading my desktop.

What do I do now? Well now you know it is the 128 mb module that's to blame.
If you want to get rid of the error message I think you have to replace it.Hello Deerpark,

I kind of figured that out after everything was said and done. I will replace it as soon as I gain the funds. Thank you, Deerpark and patios for all you help and SUPPORT. I NEVER would have figured this out, if it was not for you guys and this website. Thank you so much.

Solve : behind in my homework!?

Answer»

When you are trying todetermine if your windows 2000 computer can support Windows XP,list the steps to KNOW how much ram is currently installed.

I'm not sure what's worse, that you don't know the answer to that or that it's a homework question in the first place....

Right click on My Computer, click Properties. On the General tab the amount of memory will be DISPLAYED in the lower right hand.
OR
Download BelarcAdvisor from www.belarc.com and run it.
OR
Download Aida32 from http://www.sofotex.com/downloads/d9326.html and run it.Boot up the computer, look at the top LEFT corner of the screen, watch the RAM test, remember the number it stops at.
Please excuse my ignorance, but I am very new to this and this basic computer course will help me upgrade myself to a better job so i can support my family in this computer AGE. Pardon me if I'm being stupid, but (whenever I see a homework question I think this) surely if you are taking a course, they are supposed to, like, "teach" you things, which you "learn". To test if you have learned STUFF, and help you to absorb it, they give you homework. If you have to go on a web forum to get your homework done, doesn't that mean that something is wrong somewhere? The teachers are lousy, the textbooks are bad, or you either are not listening or aren't asking the right questions in class?

Solve : Hard Drive/OS problem(s)?

Answer»

I have an old Arsys machine and the hard drive has been wiped clean. It appears it needs a PS2 keyboard and of course all I could find was a USB keyboard. When I boot it up, all I get is a blinking cursor at a C: prompt. I am trying to INSTALL XP on it from a CD, but it's not recognizing the USB keyboard. I am looking for a little guidance in overcoming this obstacle. Any help WOULD be highly appreciated.Get a PS/2 keyboard or a USB to PS/2 adapter.Do you think I'll be good to go after I obtain the proper equipment? What I mean is will I have to do anything different to install the OS considering the hard drive has been wiped clean? Also when I boot it up I don't get an OPTION to hit F2/F12 to CHANGE the boot setup so that it'll boot from the DISK(does that mean anything). Is there anything I will have to type at the C: prompt to get XP installed, considering I'm trying to install it from a disk? The easiest way will be to setup the BIOS to boot from the disc drive.
Try the keys mentioned here and see if one of them can take you to the BIOS config.
If you can't get it to boot from a disc you can use the XP floppy boot set.
Home or ProAll of this is moot until you have the keyboard...
Start there first.
The other steps will not be that difficult but your keyboard needs to be functioning.

Solve : System Repeatedly Crashes?

Answer»

Hello. I have a Dell Inspiron E1705 running WINDOWS XP Professional. One day, when I tried to turn my laptop on, the following message came up: "Windows XP could not START because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM". Since my computer did not come with a copy of the operating system, I could not turn on the computer in Safe MODE, and system restore was not working, I used Dell PC Restore to completely restore my computer. I reinstalled everything (Windows, Updates, etc.), however the next time I needed to turn the computer on, it WOULD not work and produced the same message as before. I have performed the entire Dell PC Restore procedure several times now, with the same result. The computer works at first (although very slowly), then when I turn it off the System32 error message comes up again and I cannot use my computer at all. Why is this same error repeatedly occurring, and how can I fix it (keeping in MIND that my computer did not come with a copy of the operating system)? This is extremely frustrating, especially since I have restored my computer to "Factory Condition" using Dell PC Restore approximately five times now. Please help!Maybe this will help?

Solve : vista. v xp pro?

Answer»

G'day I am thinking of buying a new laptop and would like to hear the professional view on the pros and cons of the two systems. I have used vista on other PCs but found it to be very confusing can anybody offer any constructive advice please. I am a long time user or xp pro. Thanksyou should probley stick with xp pro it is simple yet secure very strong os vista is not so greatWill you actually have a CHOICE? How much have you used Vista? I haven't found myself recommending to anybody that they upgrade from XP to Vista but I'm inclined to say you might as well get Vista on a new laptop unless you have important software that won't run on Vista. Just make a commitment to learning Vista. You probably have to do that sooner or later anyway, don't you think?Quote

vista is not so great
Are you using it?I'm using Vista myself. I've seen on these forums that Vista uses RAM differently, but I still think that 750 MB of RAM on factory START up without extra anti-virus is a bit much. I haven't heard or seen why the different handling of RAM would make an difference or how the two systems are different.
The only things that I can say for Vista is that it has the best error handling I've ever seen and it looks good, or you can do like I did and make it look like 95, 98, 2000. I disabled most if not all of the pretty graphics as I don't need it and replaced that difference with anti-virus. Mind you, a large part of it is the included 18 month subscription to McAfee.
Most errors, it will tell you what messed up, a possible solution, and the BSOD is an auto-restart. I can't wait to get rid of McAfee because that is the number 1 source of BSOD. But does its job so it stays until subscription goes. I don't like that Ctrl+Alt+Del twice doesn't restart. The BSOD does not include any "USEFUL" information, just a bunch of white dots placed at apparent RANDOM locations. The locations may be useful to someone, but as far as I know, only Microsoft knows what it is all about.
I recommend a system reinstall out of the box to remove 20 something unnecessary processes, but you'll need to know were to get the drivers and other programs you might like first so get those versions and sources before reinstall.
If you get a Dell laptop, pull it apart and put it back together only tighter. I've lost at least three screws, two of which hold the hard drive in and that was all of the screws that do that, and my CPU fan came loose with a drop of a few centimeters and is hitting something.A few of the Major Manuf. of laptops are now still offering XP as an option....
This was because of high consumer demand.
You will need to do some research and price comparisons but i believe Dell is one of them.Quote
750 MB of RAM on factory start up without extra anti-virus is a bit much
Good luck with Vista on 750MB of RAM.
In my opinion, you need 2GB of RAM to run Vista flawlessly, which is even impossible with McAfee installed.I'd say XP as most things coming out on Vista still WORK on XP - or they offer an alternative which works on XP anyway.

Vista is only a filler anyway - Microsoft's newest OS due out in 2009 will replace it.

I mean, heck, I don't even think you can beat win98SE!!

Vista requires a lot more ram, and I personally have had experience troubleshooting both Vista and XP - Vista is a bit more complex.

And hey, its not THAT great. It's just a fancy version of XP, with a few more bells and whistles.

Solve : Recovering files from old primary hard drive?

Answer»

I am using Windows XP and have two hard drives. Until recently I had Windows installed on one hard drive and all my important files (photos, business files, videos, etc) were also on this drive. My other hard drive was completely empty. Suddenly I started encountering problems with Windows and while I was using Windows it would completely freeze. I would pull the plug on the computer and start it again and then it would be FINE - for a few hours - and then it would freeze again. The problem started HAPPENING more often and more quickly after REBOOTING and interestingly I noticed over the course of a few days that the problem seemed to be worse whenever my heater was turned on. I left the heater turned off and didn't encounter a problem again for a couple of days, but then it started happening again and more often even while the heater was turned off. I figured because there seemed to be a correlation with the heater being on and the computer's performance that the fans or the power supply inside the computer were over-clogged with dust. I opened up the computer and thoroughly cleaned out all the dust I was able to and made sure all the fans were dust-free. It didn't help. The computer's condition continued to deteriorate and occasionally when I attempted to re-boot the computer it would completely freeze before getting to the Windows boot screen or it would display the following message.

Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem. Could not read from the selected boot disk. Check boot path and disk hardware. PLEASE check the Windows documentation about hardware disk configuration and your hardware reference manuals for additional information.

Over the next couple of days the computer wouldn't get to the Windows loading screen at all and it would only boot to the point of displaying the aforementioned message.

I took my computer to my friend's house to see if he could fix it. He said that some of the boot.ini files in my version of Windows were damaged or I had accidentally deleted them somehow. Because I was completely unable to load Windows there was no way to do a System Restore so he came up with an alternative plan. He decided to load a new Windows XP onto my other hard drive and use that drive as my master. He said even though Windows was loaded onto the first drive, I would be able to access the files from it with the new Windows in Windows Explorer.

So he did it but then we encountered a new problem. The new Windows works fine but for some REASON I am unable to access the files from the other hard drive. I think this is because my original Windows had a password on it. When I used to load Windows you had to type a password to login as me and access my files. Otherwise you could only be a guest. But now when I try to access these files an Error message comes up saying these files cannot be accessed. It doesn't even give me the option to type a password.

So basically what I want to know is this: Am I able to recover these files from my original hard drive. I really need them for my business and I have five years of family photos on there that are of high sentimental value to me.

Please somebody help.

Solve : xp black?

Answer»

has anyone heard of windows xp black? Yes...
Are you looking to get infected ? ?Maybe he MEANS a black XP theme? I have one myself called Black Mint, it is from StyleXP. I really hate that default Luna theme with the blue taskbar and window decorations; it looks like something Mattel designed for 4 year olds.
[link removed]

I think he means that one.

Is that full of virusses???

Don't know, but it is almost CERTAINLY illegal, and as this site does not encourage piracy or linking to cracked versions of copyright software, you might consider removing that link that you posted...

Yes, I should have, I didn't think that one through.
I just posted it to show what I thought he meant with XP black.
Never thought about the illegal aspect of it, stupid me!
To actually answer the question...

Windows XP Black Edition is a pirated and doctored copy of Windows XP that comes with a bundle of more pirated software. There are claims that it runs a lot better than a stock Windows XP installation (by stock I mean an installation from an authentic XP disc), but from my experience and research, I have found these claims to just be rumors. I actually had a chance to look at it while working on a computer that came through my shop last month (part of that work included removing XP Black and installing an authentic VERSION). While I don't know if the computer was infected because of XP Black or as a result of something else, I suggest steering clear of it.

Regardless of its performance, as was mentioned already in this thread, the Windows XP Black Edition is an illegal copy of Windows. I strongly suggest you do not download it, as with any pirated software. The TEMPTATION of something expensive for free OFTEN gets you more than you bargained for. The majority of people who bring me hopelessly infected computers usually got those infections from downloading pirated or "free" things.thanks guys i'll keep that in mind

Solve : problems installing sp2 after i reformatted my hd.?

Answer»

I bought my computer in 2003 and it is a dell 8200 laptop. Yesterday, I decided to reformat my hard drive and reinstall the original windows xp that came with the computer. Everything work GREAT.. but now windows will not install SERVICE PACK 2. the error message is windows cannot copy locator.exe, it does this for probably 4 or 5 files.

What should i do? and should i install sp1 then sp2 or should i skip to sp3?How did you format and re-install ? ?
If you used anything other than the Dell CD that came with the machine it's likely to be missing either drivers and or propietary add-on software that enables the laptop to update properly.

SP2 includes SP1 so that may be wasting time and energy.
I wouldn't recommend SP3...it's still a BETA and has seperate issues.

Check out the Dell Forums for issues with that model #

Also if you know someone who has an SP2 CD you could try it that way.
Good LUCK.

Solve : my computer restarts after completion of booting?

Answer»

This problem started about a week and a half ago. I don't remember installing ANYTHING new, but that doesn't mean that I didn't...bad memory. I was having trouble closing tabs in Internet Explorer immediately before this started HAPPENING. I would attempt to close a tab and it would freeze the screen for a few minutes. I didn't have a problem closing the whole window.

After rebooting, my computer gets to the desktop and immediately restarts.

My specs are:
Windows XP Service Pack 2
Internet Explorer 7
Gateway computer

I can start the computer in safe mode without it rebooting. The FAQ section said that this means it is a software problem. I'm decent with computers, but I have no experience troubleshooting software.

I would be grateful for any help. Let me know if you need more info as well.
Do you have Windows XP CD?I'm PRETTY sure I don't.It may be overheating (did you check your computer temps? did you clean your computer inside using compressed air), bad RAM (try to re-seat it; if you have more, then 1 RAM stick, try to start computer with one stick at a TIME), video card (if you have separate video card, try to re-seat it)

Solve : stuck in safe mode?

Answer»

Good, if the themes tab is there then it's not in safe mode - I take it you have an attractive looking green start button ?

First lets sort out your display then get onto the applications/printer problems.

Right click desktop > properties > settings tab

Adjust the screen resolution slider towards 'more'

How's that looking? That looks beautiful!!! Thank you I learned a lot from you!!Your very welcome Trisse

Did you manage to get Firefox/YAHOO Messenger/printer working?

Are all other applications working OK?

You might want to try opening all the applications within your start menu just to test them.

Let us know what problems you have...I started a new forum about how I can learn to open mozilla forum and yahoo, they won't open...Ok Trisse, good luck with thatCertainly if you have any idea what is going on with this I would appreciate your help, I just thought this forum may be getting too long so I opened it...but you can help me if you want to.
THANKS Trisse

Solve : Safe mode question?

Answer»

Why do you always tell people to for example SCAN for things in safe mode, what is the difference of scanning in normal windows?

Just curious

ThanxKeep it clean...we have Members of all ages.

patio.I'm not sure what Patio's response means but very few viruses, and other MALWARE, will run in Safe Mode making them easier to detect. Also much fewer system components run making scanning more effective.

Good luckIn safe mode, you get the bare minimum in terms of drivers and file system apps running.

That said, your computer is using very little RESOURCE to run. If you are not running in safe mode with networking, you have no internet CONNECTION which is good for not allowing your computer to get infected.

You scan and it would be a much smoother ride with no heavy duty work required as you now have plenty of resources available and usually in safe mode you're not interested in doing your usual TASKS which takes up resources too.My response means the original post was cleaned up...Aha, guess the OP understood. thanks..

Solve : Google search history?

Answer»

After many years of using Google, I find that my Google search history is populated by things that I haven't USED in many years and have no more use for. But trying to delete any of the history is PROVING to be a frustrating ordeal. The standard way of using "INTERNET options", delete files, history etc only clears my internet explorer and not google. Is there any way? What browser are you using?I'm using IE6.Try clearing forms under Autocomplete.
http://www.updatexp.com/autocomplete-ie6.htmlGoogle history, not your browser's history - right?

Are you signed in on Google? Go to Google's page and look to the top right.
That's where it APPEARS on mine.

You might want to STAY signed out.

Yes, doing the autocomplete thing cleaned it all up. Thank you for your help. You're very welcome.
Be sure to comeback anytime.

On a side note, have you considered upgrading to IE7? If not you really should. It is a lot more secure than IE6 and makes it a lot easier to clear all privacy related information. (Lots of other new features as well.)
Just a friendly suggestion.

Solve : two PC Q/As HELP?

And I whent to e mail a FILE that was 7.96 MB and it could not go.

And Verizon told me to try e mailing it from Outlook Exspress because it's upload file size is 20 MB.

Well it did not work but I want to know even if I use Outlook Exspress to e mail my fil it still is going through Verizon so wont the upload file size still be 8 MB or how does that wwork???Quote from: nymph4 on March 06, 2008, 12:11:24 PM

That makes no sense whatsoever. The upload file size is what it is, period. If he meant to say Outlook Express can upload files up to 20MB, I think that's ALSO false. Any upload limitation is going to stem from your ISP, not OE.

Yes, it would still be 8MB. I suspect that exceeds a limit by Verizon. Of course, they should be able to tell you the straight facts on this, but in the world of tech support TODAY, well ....

Here's an option. Create an account with http://www.adrive.com/ and then upload your file to it. Of course, if you want someone else to get the file, you'll have to give them the username and password for the Adrive account. But, you can change it later, or just close the account if you no longer want it.
