Solve : Can't boot, windows XP?

Answer»

O.K. this might not be a new topic but since I can't find an old topic with a working solution I'm re-opening this issue.

I have a computer that won't boot up with windows XP. It won't boot in the safe mode when I choose it off the boot list. It won't boot from the last successfull boot CONFIG and it STARTS to boot from the cd rom and then stops to give me the same message it gives when trying to boot: "Windows was stopped due to a detected error." I get this message over and over. It doesn't tell me that anything is missing. Just the big blue screen. It does tell me to try booting from the cd rom or running a virus scan which I can't do because I can't boot.Isnt it a hardware problem? I don't know if it's a hardware problem or not. Everything appears to be working correctly. My next thought is to purchase a new hard drive it all else fails.Could you post in the message written when your computer turns blue screen.. If its possible...If its a blue screen it may be a confilt H/w to h/w or s/w to s/w....please do a power cycle..unplug everything other then the mouse and keyboard and restart the system ..in last know good configurationsI disconnected all hardware and REBOOTED, I get the blue screen with the same message.

When I turn the computer on I get the Dell logo and then a black screen that tell me that it can't find my floppy drive: choose F1 to continue, I choose F1.

Then the next black screen says, Please select O/S to start
-Win XP media center
-MS SP Prof

or choose F8.

It does not matter what option I choose, when it tries to boot I get the blue screen with the msg.
"Aproblem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to computer. . . Runc CHKDSK/F to check for hard drive corruption and then restart your computer. "

I can't run any thing at this point. I can only re-start the pc.

You may want to follow the instructions on the message. You should have your O/S installer CD. Configure first your BIOS to boot first on CD. If you've been able to boot from the cd, choose the REPAIR option. Then just follow the instructions on it.I tried running the repair or recovery feture from the cd but it request an "administrative password". We don't have one, nor does anyone remember ever creating one.If you NEVER set a password just hit Enter at the prompt...

Solve : Scanner fails after fresh win2K install?

Answer»

Since the scanner and all other computer COMPONENTS work, I'm GUESSING the problem is Windows setup or a problem with a Windows update...

Had a hard drive failure when scanner was working properly, so picked up a NEW hard drive and have reinstalled everything properly EXCEPT scanner. I have tried installation disk that came with the scanner as well as 3rd party drivers. I have another computer with binary identical drivers/Documan installed files running WinXP that works with the scanner. Cable and LPT1 port works with printer (hooked up in series and stand alone) and there is power to the scanner.

Scanner is ArtiScan 9600Pro-36 with Tamarack Technologies (Documan) software
Win2KSP4 with all MS updates installed
ECP Printer Port has - use any interrupt assigned to the port (although I have tried other selections)
- legacy PnP detection enabled
- no device conflicts listed

The failure of the scanner is a long delay in obtaining an image. The light detector does not physically move. The image returned is either all white or occasionally gray scale stripes. You say you tried the original drivers...why won't they take ? ?
Any error messages ?
I forgot to take a look at the Event Viewer. During the installs there were Information events in the System Log.

No errors were being displayed during software installation. Various events from the source "Windows File Protection" were being created:

File replacement was attempted on the protected system file c:\winnt\twunk_32.exe. This file was restored to the original version to maintain system stability. The file version of the bad file is 1.6.0.1, the version of the system file is 1.7.0.0.

File replacement was attempted on the protected system file c:\winnt\twain_32.dll. This file was restored to the original version to maintain system stability. The file version of the bad file is 1.6.0.3, the version of the system file is 1.7.0.0.

File replacement was attempted on the protected system file olepro32.dll. This file was restored to the original version to maintain system stability. The file version of the bad file is 4.0.0.5277, the version of the system file is 5.0.4522.0.

The protected system file c:\winnt\twain.dll COULD not be verified as valid because Windows File Protection is terminating. Use the SFC utility to verify the integrity of the file at a later time.

The protected system file c:\winnt\twunk_16.exe could not be verified as valid because Windows File Protection is terminating. Use the SFC utility to verify the integrity of the file at a later time. Got o Start/Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter...
Have your XP CD handy...
Re-boot.

Solve : HP Update - missing button to click?

Answer»

Quote

Is it possible your display resolution is set incorrectly; e.g. "768 wide x 1024 high" instead of "1024 wide x 768 high"?
This shouldn't matter, because it's not MONITOR cutting part of the display, but inside part of pop-up window being cut off.I've had the same problem. What's happened, is somehow, the scripting for hp update notifier BOX, is screwed up. It's an un-resizeable pop up box, with no ability to resize, or scroll the larger graphic inside the window to enable you to actually get to the yay or nay buttons.. they are presumably below the horizon on the silly little pop up window that comes. It kind of reminds me of other unmentionably annoying pop up windows with no right click to close. Upon initially having this problem, I simply did the ole ctrl-alt-delete, and killed the "hpwucli.exe" process because you can't even right click their stupid popup notifier to close their popup window. The alternative would be to drag it to the bottom of the screen under the taskbar and just let it sit there BURIED till ya have time to reboot.

So ya can't say yes, you can't say no or cancel.. and you can't prompt it to actually do what it wants to do.. update whatever it said needed updating.

However I did find a LITTLE workaround.. If you click on the window and then hit enter once, it's equivalent to clicking the "ok" button. It's still pretty shoddy programming for HP update to completely miss the fact the buttons are in fact, below the horizon in the little window that pops up.. and that window can't be resized to reveal the MISSING two choice buttons.

I'll add, I've been trying all day to install the recommended 80 mb of nvidia's d**n "software update" and it keeps on abruptly teling me "The download failed.

Anyone happen to run across a good sized hammer, let me know. Otherwise could someone tell me how to change the scripting for hp software update program, to resize their popup window to add about a half inch to the bottom of the height of the window, and be able to press the darn buttons?

one would think it would be in the registry settings, specifying the initial size of the hp auto update box. I just don't know where to look to correct the box size issue.

If my mouse would mouse over like every other NORMAL window, the sides and top could be resized to accomodate the two buttons that are so top secret even HP doesn't want you to get at them.

clicking once and then hitting enter, will initiate a download of recommended software.. (from the auto update website.)

Then again, if the nvidia vga driver doesn't wanna complete installing or even download correctly, then I'm at the mercy of.. well.. another snafu.

I'd kinda like to get an update that doesn't hold me up for half an hour and then decide "not* to install.

I'll *add* here.. don't we have enough "update" checkers running? I thought microsoft was bad.. now I have an oem computer manufacturerer redundantly giving me the redundant definition of redundancy in updating software drivers that microsoft and others provide on their own merits.

I know I have a year's warranty.. but isn't it oddly curious that their own update software is so proprietary even the popup window doesn't correspond to standard rules for normal window display boxes that can be resized or panned so the missing buttons can be panned to press?

The longer I use my laptop, the more useless hp's oem software addons to my windows seem like a giant waste of my screen, ram and hard drive's real estate. And I'm quite sure this problem started when HP, updated it's HP update software about three months after I bought this computer.

Dudes, if it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Quote from: Broni on February 08, 2008, 06:38:51 PM
"Another thing....you can always go Start>Programs>HP>HP Update to see, if there are any updates available."

I would use Broni's advice and manually check for update, and while I was there open the settings. From there you can change how often HP's software automatically checks for updates. I have mine set to never, and periodically do a manual check. This should keep that annoying pop-up from starting.

Solve : XP-explorer shuts down-ran virus, found 2deleted-still issues- 'lxs' pop-up-HELP?

Answer»

Running Dimension E3100 w/ XP professional

Yesterday a pop-up came up stating explorer had to shut down to prevent any damage,etc.etc. I re-booted and did virus scans, w/ both AVG and Norton. I found two;

AngryIPScanner A0055063.exe
AngryIPScanner ipscan.exe

I quarantined the viruses and deleted them. Problem solved? Nope.

Explorer continues to shut down after about 5 minutes, but always let's firefox keep running, which is strange, but good, so I can still get help from you guys! 90% of the time after re-boot, I am unable to use any of the menus past the initial screen...meaning, I can click start and all the options come up, but I am unable to get the next menu to show. The ONLY thing I can think of is that I use Sandboxie when I'm searching for things that McAfee site advisor shows as questionable. I always delete the contents immediately after I'm done, and have only used downloads via a box on a few occasions, but I haven't done that in several months.

Several TIMES, but not all, when I re-boot a screen comes up stating a problem with the "LXS" and how it is missing, and wondering if I want to pick a program or if I want windows to search online. I always choose windows, but the search comes up with nothing.

I am willing, but do not want, to completely re-install xp, but I'd like to try to avoid it if I can. In a moment of frustration, I attempted to re-install via Dell's reinstall CD, but I kept getting a screen not allowing me to do it, saying I was trying to install a later version than I currently had on my COMPUTER, which didn't make sense to me. In any case, PLEASE HELP!!!

Thank you so much,

ChadStart by going through the steps here. It is very likely there's still PARTS of the infection left.

Solve : XP pro self restarts during bootup (similar; but worse)?

Answer»

Hi all,

Please give me some guidance?

My problem is similar to 'josthor', only that beyond his fun bar, the computer shows initially a blank screen, the hard drive kicks in, the screen lights up with nothing on it for approximately 2 mins and then reboots. This will happen all the time.

I have tried to access all of the other operations i.e.
Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command prompt and so fourth.

I have even tried to use 'directory services restore mode'. My C:/ Drive is clean and working fine.

When this whole thing happened I was in Windows explorer when I noticed my Internet ICONS were both lit up. I checked my firewall to see what activity was taking place and what program was communicating with the internet. My computer froze at that stage. This is the first time this has happened. I was forced to restart, and the rest is history.

Note: From Previous other experience, this could be a registry problem. I'm not certain if this is the case, HOWEVER any assistance to allow me to get up to the log in would be appreciated.

Is there a by pass boot up that I can use. I do not want to reinstall. Could I use the repair facility (if any) on the xp installation disk?

From command prompt how would I repair the registry if that was a problem?

i'm not understanding you. Is the screen completely blank the whole time it's on? or does it turn blank when it starts loading windows? were you able to see the boot menu for the safe mode options? if it's always blank, i'm going to guess it's some kind of hardware problem. but if it shows text after you turn it on, it's PROBABLY a software problem.ok so i just fixed mine i dont know if this helps you or anything but i used the system restore to restore it to the day before it started, and it worked it BOOTS normal again. hopefully it will STAY like thatdude your OS is most likely screwed. best option will be to install fresh XP on a clean or formatted hard drive. you can try the repair option or upgrade the OS but if those dont work your only option will be to reinstall xp. if it wont do that then youve got a corrupted hard drive.

Solve : issues with computer?

Answer»

Hi there,

My computer recently CRASHED on me and the only way i could get it back was to reformat the hard drive. After formating the hard drive the computer screen resoloution would not get any BIGGER than something like 800x600. I followed what the help tab suggested and now when the computer LOADS and gets to the log on screen the monitor goes blank and i can do nothing. I can type in my password and the computer seems to load like it always does but nothing shows up except a black screen. I have microsoft xp service pack 1a. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.hello

firstly you really need to tell us about your machine

ok that out of the way you could TRY turning on your computer whist pressing f8 this should give you a menu that will let you load in safe mode.

go into start
control panel
system
select hardware tab
then select device manager
look at displays and see if your video card/driver is mentioned take a note of it anyway

now go to start
programs
accesories
system tools
system restore and select a restore point to just before the problem happened

go through the process and even though the screen size isnt to your liking get on to the internet and do a search for your video card drivers

hopefully this could help

bartrob
After a FORMAT your drivers are wiped out...you will need to re-install all your drivers including Video, MBoard and sound and network controllers.
Did this machine ship with a driver CD originally ? ?
If so use those.Well the computer i have is an older dell 2400 series. if that helps you out. but the problem i am having after installing all of the drivers on cd that came with the computer. when the computer starts up and you see the microsoft symbol and the little bar, after it gets past that, the screen goes completely blank. i am at a loss and don't know what to do. i cant do nothing because i can't see what i am doing. i have tried logging on in safe mode and almost everyother mode i can i have even tried using the load last known successful what ever option. i hope that gives you a little more detail on whats going on. any help again would be greatful. Are you saying you cannot get into safemode ? ?that is correct i can not log on to my computer even in safemode

Are you trying to do an upgrade from another version of Windows?

If so, TAKE a look at this recommendation from Microsoft:

Quote

1. If you are upgrading Windows 98 or Windows Millennium Edition, follow the troubleshooting steps that are described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:
310064 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310064/) HOW TO: Troubleshoot Windows XP Problems During Installation When You Upgrade from Windows 98 or Windows Me
Test to determine if the ISSUE is resolved. If the issue is resolved, do not complete the remaining steps. If the issue is not resolved, go to the next step.

2. Perform a clean installation of Windows XP:

a. INSERT the Windows XP CD-ROM into your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.
b. If Windows automatically detects the CD-ROM, click Install Windows to start the Windows XP Setup Wizard. If Windows does not automatically detect the CD-ROM, click Start, click Run, TYPE CD-ROM drive letter:\setup.exe, and then click OK.
c. Press ENTER.
d. Click New Installation, and then click Next.
e. Follow the instructions on your screen.

3. When you receive the "Press F6 to LOAD SCSI/Raid Drivers" prompt, press F7 to bypass Advanced Configuration and PowerInterface (ACPI) detection.

4. Finish the installation of Windows XP.

Hope this helps...

Answer» OK so i have a little problem,

what happens is the bios load then it shoots to the "windows xp pro" loading screen with the fun little bar with little blue rectangles that go across it then after about 2 or so minutes the computer restarts, bios show, then the safe mode/last good config/normal boot options apear. i choose normal all the time and it starts fine, i chose last known good config once and i have no idea what the *censored* to do in safe mode with it.

i do not want to reinstall xp as i did this 2 weeks ago because of the same problem (it started OCCURING again 3 days after i reinstalled it)

i have no spywear i just cleared it out yesterday w/ spybot

When it goes to Windows, does it stay there, or it keeps restarting?the second time it goes to windows after i choose normal mode it boots normally and goes to the welcome screen where i log in
...and you can use Windows normally?yesWill it boot normally into Safe Mode? (keep tapping F8 key after computer starts)yesIf you have separate video card, try to re-seat it. Clean connectors with eraser. Restart in normal mode. If it doesn't help, try to borrow video card from a friend.
Update video drivers.fixed it, i used the "system restore" thing and put it to the day before it started and now it starts normally again (yay!) ill post again if i get the same problem

Solve : HTML to PDF?

Answer»

Can someone please tell me how to change a publication in Microsoft PUBLISHER from HTML to PDF. I have microsoft XP program. I also have adobe 8.2. how can I combine?
ConnieL!I'm not sure Microsoft Publisher can do this. You may need another program to convert from HTML to PDF. You could try searching for "html to pdf" at www.download.com. I found a free one there ( http://www.download.com/Free-HTML-to-PDF-Converter/3000-2070_4-10792047.html?tag=lst-1 ).

-Aaron
www.weknowerrors.com A free Wiki for COMPUTER problems. You can do this by installing a PDF generator. One such tool is PrimoPDF, and it's free. One installed, it will appear in your system as a printer. To "print" an HTML file, Word file, Excel file, or any other application, to a PDF document, choose PrimoPDF as the "printer". primo pdf is EXCELLENT program. it "printed" all the files i wanted into pdf with no problem and quality is good too.

Solve : Downloaded Ad-Aware 7, now cannot access my Eurdora email - help?

Answer»

Right clicking on Start does not give me, "PROGRAMS." However, right clicking on the remaining EUDORA desktop icon, (which has now changed to a blank white TV screen with a blue strip on top...no longer the Eudora icon), I can then click on properties. Properties gives me: "Target... D:\Eudora.exe"D:\" (hey, there's exe!?) then, "Start in D:|," then, "run, normal windows."

Is this closer?

Where do I find if I have enabled hidden files?

DennisTo enable hidden files, in Windows Explorer, go Tools>Folder Options>View tab, checkmark "Show hidden files and folders".
Quote

Properties gives me: "Target... D:\Eudora.exe"
After enabling hidden files, navigate to D drive, and see, if "eudora.exe" is there, but I doubt, since "no longer the Eudora icon"
I set and applied to view hidden files. That was easy.

Went all through D drive and no Eudora.

?

DennisI'm sorry, but I don't know what else I could advise...Apparently your Eudora is gone.
You can try using undelete program like Pandora Recovery: http://www.download.com/Pandora-Recovery/3000-2094_4-10694796.html?tag=lst-7
Look for eudora.exe, and for any .MBX files.Thank you. You do a good service here and all I can SAY is I appreciate it.

I might try your Pandora just in case. After I set a restore point, (grin).

Otherwise I'll download Eudora and start again. At least I'll have a clean inbox!!!

Should I succeed in recovering anything, I'll post back. Otherwise consider me off again with new Eudora.

DennisIt won't help with your Eudora situation, but I strongly recommend, you install ERUNT: http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/
It's like System Restore, or EVEN better. One of its advantages is, that it backs up your registry every day automatically. You don't have to worry, if you created new Restore Point, or not. I use it on all my computers.Well, the Pandora found nothing; so it only confirmed what we knew. I had hundreds of emails retained in my inbox, (railroad history dialalogue, etc.), but anything I ever saw as critical I either printed physically or saved to disk. I NEVER have anything in my computer I can't live without. Personal, basic mistrust. Biggest loss is convenience and addresses.

Thanks for the note on Erunt; I never heard of it, (I also never download ANY software out of idle curiousity either) I'll try it.

I am sour now on Ad-Aware, and don't know what to replace it with....if I do. This machine lives behind a router, I had used Ad-Aware for years, and use Grisoft AVG, (hate Norton). That's it.

Thanks again; I'll cruise over to Erunt.

DennisI feel for you, but it's a total mystery. I don't even know, if we can blame Ad-aware for it. I can't imagine, how it would totally erased just one program with all its files.
Anyway, now you (like many others, including myself) learned a new word: BACKUP.AdAware will not do this...even in it's most agressive scan mode.
The culprit to this story lies elsewhere....i am wondering .... what happens if you redownload the eudora program and reinstall it? maybe you might be able to run the program again and luckily get all your stuff back like it should. i don't know but you could give it a shot.

be sure you make a backup or a system restore point before you do this in case you find the need to go backwards a bit.

Have you tried using one RAM stick in each slot? You could possibly have a bad slot.Clean off each RAM stick with rubbing alcohol and give them plenty of drying time.
Use a can of compressed AIR to blow out the RAM slots.
Re-assemble and let us know...Any results?you didn MENTION how many ram slots present on your mother board if there are four generally 2 blue and 2 yellow (but not always) this signifies dual channel ram and you must use only 1 channel first befor the other will work
so ensure you put the ram in slots of the same colour or if there not coloured put them in either slots 1 & 3 or 2 & 4

hope this helps

Solve : systray?

hello everyone

i have win xp pro

i have two icons which keep appearing in my system tray and keep warning me about viruses every few seconds

i cannot get rid of them

tried msconfig and regedit, but no luck

ran a complete scan with mcafee and adaware, but no luck

they pop up the very moment that you reboot

please help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

how can i edit the systray and remove them or are they coming from another place and only showing themselves as icons in the systray

thanks very much

Try determing what the program is by moving your mouse pointer over the icon in the system tray.

Locate it in Add/Remove Programs and uninstall it...if it's of no use to you.yep......tried that

nothing appears when i run my mouse over them

when i double click them it opens up a window for virusheat.com and antispykit

i searched for both of these on my c: and did regedit to delete them but they were nowhere to be found
Sounds to me like you may have an adware/spyware infection...but don't hold me to it.

You may want to wait for those who are malware specialists...or ask that this topic be moved to that forum...IMHO.Print these instructions out.

* Close SUPERAntiSpyware.

Restart computer in Safe Mode.
To enter Safe Mode, restart computer, and keep tapping F8 key, until menu appears; pick Safe Mode; you'll see "Safe Mode" in all four corners of your screen

* Click the Scanning Control tab.
* Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
o Close browsers before scanning.
o Scan for tracking cookies.
o Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
* Click the "Close" button to leave the control CENTER screen.
* Back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
* On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
* On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan.
* Click "Next" to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
* After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
* Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
* A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to RETURN to the main menu.
* If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes".
* To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
o Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.

Solve : Creating Batch Print routine?

I have the requirement to print 20 copies (PDF or PUB files) of the same 8 pages on at least a weekly basis. Rather than go throuth the PRINT process 8 times (once for each document) is there a way to construct a batch FILE than when EXECUTED will cycle thru the process? Anyone know of any software out there that could help with this? Are you using Windows XP?

You can drag and drop the files onto the printer to make things a little easier. You won't have to OPEN the files and you can do MULTIPLE files as once.

Solve : Computer Booting?

Answer»

Hey guys, long...long time.

My dad got his laptop reformatted because of some problem or something and now whenever his computer boots, he gets an option of 2 operating systems, both Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition.
Both of them do the same thing.

I checked his boot settings by right clicking My computer and going to the advance tab and this is what I got:

Code: [SELECT][boot loader]
timeout=5
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

I was wondering if I could just delete
Code: [Select]multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetectso the OS choices menu doesn't keep coming up.Yes you can, DELETING the SECOND line will remove the non default boot choice. You should notice though that the two choices are referencing two different partitions (partition(1)/partition(2)).
Are you sure he doesn't have two XP installations here?
Sure looks that way. Who did the format & reinstall?

Solve : Upgrading from Windows Me to XP?

Answer»

I have bought a new computer which came with Vista. My daughter's computer has Windows Me as its operating SYSTEM. Can I replace her Windows Me O/S with my now surplus XP (OEM) and if so, how do I do it?Is it a REAL XP install disc (with Microsoft holograms on it) or a OEM restore disc?
It is a real XP installation disc. Then yes, I believe it is possible to install it on your other computer.
Before you do so you should collect XP drivers for the hardware in the computer though.
By the way, how fast is the processor and how much RAM do the computer have installed? The system requirements for XP are higher than ME so XP might END up FEELING sluggish if the specs are too LOW.

Jordan this is what most PEOPLE call the

Blue Screen of Death

Well since you claim that you can't pause/break when the screen appears, you COULD make a video with your digital camera or video camera if you have one.

If you do, depending on your FPS, Good would be 60-100 FPS for this situation because you'll be able to capture the blue screen.

So turn on your video camera, start to record, turn on your computer, make sure camera is facing your monitor, and hopefully when the blue screen comes you can get it in your video camera.

Then if it does, just rewind it and just pause when it gets to the blue screen and post what it says, well its just what Broni just said about the numbers and letters

I highly recommend you never d/l a game from the internet.

First of all if the game is for free, like you don't have to pay to get the game, (example: Wolfenstien: Enemy Territory), the website of the game will have a download link for where you can d/l the game from.

However if you d/l a game where you have to buy the game with money, (Example: Enemy Territory: Quake Wars) it is very hard to d/l the actual game and the game is working properly, without a Virus.

When I click on the TAB "programs" in the start menu, the program LIST is not entirely displayed: rather, an arrow appears at the bottom of the list, and the whole program list appears only if I click on that arrow. My question is: how can I make windows display the whole program list immediately after I have clicked on the tab "programs" ?

Thx.I'm not sure, if this is what you want, but if you'd PREFER multiple columns, instead of scrolling:
* SELECT Settings in your Start Menu, and then select Taskbar & Start Menu.
* Choose the Start Menu tab, choose Classic Start Menu, and click Customize.
* Turn off the Scroll the Programs menu option, and click Ok when you're done. This is not what I wanted, but this help me to get it (in FACT, it was sufficient to disable "use personalized menu".
Thank you very much.

Solve : Internet setup and something about audio card??

Answer»

hey guys, so i got my computer to format and i installed windows professional. now the hard part is trying to setup my internet connection. my internet was working fine up unitl i formatted, and now it cant even detect the connection. i recheck all the cables and the modem.

The way i have my connection setup is, there is a wire and i plug that inot a wall jack, then theres another wire that goes all the way across my house and into my room, and then i get another short wire to plug from there to my computer.

Im not sure what kind of connection this is , but it STILL runs REALLY fast. WHENEVER i tried to setup the manual connection it asks for name and password. for name i put like my name and my modem is password protected(WEP) and i put that could into password.

so guys, if u can help me, i really like it, oh! if ur going to post some steps, plz be detailed, i dont want to miss any steps.

P.S. installed a game, but i message poped up saying i dont have an audio card installed. no idea what that means and im on another computer in my house. also i installed everything from the Windows professional CD, the extra stuffI just have some questions

Is the wire connecting to the wall jack also connected to the modem at the other end?

You missed out the most important part: where in the setup the modem is connected.

Why? is it because the long wire that goes across your house is not long enough?

Who is your service provider? do you have a setup disc from them? what modem is it?

P.S. installed a game, but i message poped up saying i dont have an audio card installed. no idea what that means and im on another computer in my house.

Well, it could mean a lot of things. It could be that you don't have an actual physical audio card installed (a piece of hardware in your computer) or the install for that game couldn't FIND it or something more technical.

Can you hear anything else on your system? music, online content etc?yes, i know for a fact that i have a sound card, but then someone told me i need a sound driver and a lan driver. when my dad got a new modem, all he had to do was jsut plug it in and it would get the internet by itself, he didnt need to do anything. also i really dont know what a driver is in the first place , so if anybody an tell me.?The LAN drivers will be on the Driver CD that came with the machine...your MBoard drivers will be on that same CDso ur saying the the extra stuff u can install is on the windows professinal CD, i dont have the reocvery CDthe drivers aren't on the windows cd. if your computer came with a cd that said specifically it was a "driver" cd than that's what you install the lan and audio with. also, i'm guessing you have broadband with an ethernet connection from what you said and you don't need a password or username. but i could be wrong and you actually have a dial-up connection which needs a password. if your computer didn't come with a driver cd, download it from a computer with working internet at the computer company's, or ethernet or audio card, site and burn it to a cd to install on your computer. but what we need to know to really help you are the following: type of connection, such as broadband or dial-up, what kind of modem, router, etc, and audio and ethernet card company NAMES. and i'm sorry if this is hard to follow, i typed kinda fast.

Solve : How Can we Disable the windows Security Alert Icon??

Answer»

Hello dear All!

How can I disable the windows security alert Icon through or using windows Registry Editor or using Group Policy (Gpedit.msc)?

Please look at this picture:

I can disable this icon using windows Security Center but i want to know how can I disable it using windows Registry Editor or using Group Policy (Gpedit.msc)?

Please help me because I really need this method of disabling.

Regards
Farahmand!Are you familiar with services?
If you do not use Security Center, you MIGHT consider removing its service. Its simply titled "security center" . You can press the WindowsKey+R and then type:

MSCONFIG

and go to the Services tag, and uncheck"Security Center". If you are not familiar with the computer, write these down in case something goes absolutely terribly wrong and you have to get it back using Safe Mode. It is the exact reverse, you just click the checkbox again.

Now, much as I may dislike pirating, if you did anything to modify the Windows Logon file or disable WGA, whether with good legal reasoning or not, I dont recommend you do this. (Not saying you did, but a lot of people who have had problems "activating" Windows either because they installed it on their new computer, or whatever, have gone the route of bypassing it..)

Note:
Security center happens to be an extremely good program when you need to be yelled at since you are browsing the net without antivirus, or firewall. The only EXCUSE to not have firewall is if your insane. Windows Firewall works great, no matter what many others say. Its built in, for one, meaning directly intergraded, and its FREQUENTLY updated, unlike Sygate and other older but nice firewalls. Even over dialup, basic firewall should be used. As for Antivirus, viruses come in SMALL packages, and get on by only visiting a website now-a-days.

As for Windows Updates:
Though they may SEEM evil, they are important. They fix many bugs and random issues that will/can occur with your system. If you want to keep things running at their best, be sure to install your updates.

Security center is not memory intensive. Its not going to free many resources by doing something as you are attempting.

Wow! I could write that into an Frequently Asked Question article. Hi dear friend!

Thanks for your Explanations.

one of my friends asked this question (How Can we Disable the windows Security Alert Icon using windows Registry?) from me.I am not a hacker and I never use my skills in bad ways.

thanks again my friend.

Solve : Windows XP/SuSe 9.3 bootloader issue?

Answer»

I have Windows XP Pro (SP2) and SuSe 9.3 Pro installed on my computer. The bootloader I'm USING is GRUB. When I TRY to START SuSe nowadays it won't start up correctly and I barely have use for it right now, so I was thinking of formatting the Linux partition on my comp with Partition Magic in Windows. The thing is that if I do that I will lose the boot "section" for XP. How do I recover that afterwards so that I can use XP?
Use your XP install DISC and enter the recovery console.
type fixmbr and hit enter.
This will REINSTALL the XP bootloader, overwriting GRUB.
If your primary partition is FAT formatted you will need to use the fixboot command before fixmbr.

And one other Q/A how do I get that window to be displayedQuote

Is this how long the system will display the Option menu that says SAFE MODE...BOOT FROM CD.....and all the other stuf???

Yes

Quote
how do I get that window to be displayed

Repeatedly tap F8 key as the PC boots

Actually that isn't correct as far as I know. The timeout setting sets how long the boot menu is displayed. The setting have no effect if you only have one windows installation on the computer, since the boot menu isn't display at all then.

EDIT: just tested it. The timeout setting only affects the boot menu not recovery menu.

You can ADJUST how long the recovery menu is displayed by doing the following:
Right click My Computer and SELECT Properties
Select the ADVANCED tab
Click Settings in the Startup and Recovery frame.
Adjust "Time to display recovery options when needed:"Nice clarification, DeerPark...

If you format a partition you wipe it clean, this is the whole point of a format. So what are these files you have been recovering? The old system files from before the format or did something go WRONG during a reinstall of XP?

You're post is very unclear, you will need to PROVIDE a more detailed description of what you've done so FAR.

Solve : web page is too wide for printer?

Answer»

(2000 pro) My web pages are too wide. I must scroll right to read them. My main problem is that the printer only prints the left approx. 80% no matter where the left right scroll is located. Is there some way to fix this? What browser, including version, are you using? For printing, try LANDSCAPE, instead of portrait.right click on DESKTOP and click properties the on the screen that comes up click advanced then set the screen resolution higher and click apply if present. SEE if this solves your screen size problem. Thanks for the replies
The browser is internet explorer. Version 6.0.2800.1106.
Going to landscape does not help.
Could not change resolution per your instructions. When I clicked on settings I got a window that had (archive and index) and (compress or encrypt).
However my son told me how to do it. Right click on the screen background, click properties, click settings and change resolution. This made the left right scroll BAR GO away on the web page but no one told the printer. It still only prints the left 80% on both portrait and landscape.Try Firefox. In IE, go to File, Page Setup, and reduce the right and left margin. That will probably solve the problem.

Solve : Strange scrolling issue in Windows XP with Midisoft App?

When playing a song in Midisoft's Desktop Sheet Music app in Windows XP the screen freezes and the measure counter freezes after about 50 measures but the audio continues. Midisoft's suggestion of no help. The app states it is XP compatible. BTW, this is a Win98/WinXP dual boot PC and it runs fine in Win98. Also there seems to be nothing to changes in this app's preferences. This is the only app with an ISSUE on this PC. Hope someone has a good suggestion. Thanks
BTW, this is a great forum. You guys helped me solve a recent issue when I added additional memory to this same PC. Seems I needed to change the MaxPage line in the Win98 system.ini. Thanks Do you USE any peripherals with midisoft's sheet music app?

(Microphone or some other type of external audio input, etc).

If you do use peripherals it could be an incorrectly installed driver or non-winxp driver. Thanks for the reply. The only peripheral is the same Midi keyboard I use when I am running in Win98. What is so strange to me is the software co. sez this app is compatible with Win 9x, ME, XP. I've never been able to find anyone else running this app in WinXP. There must be someone that runs it successfully. It looks like a fairly older application...although they may say it "runs" in XP it may just not be optimised to do so...

Have you verified in device manager that there are no "?'s"

Also, have you installed the windows xp driver for the midi keyboard? Thanks for your suggestions. So far nothing has CHANGED this issue. This Midi KBD has no drivers, that is to say the only connections to the PC is the I/O DIN plugs, and the analog audio i/o.
I did notice that if I open say a Lotus 1-2-3 window, then go back to the Desktop Sheet Music app window, the display will again work correctly for a while.
Could there be some kind of conflict with memory allocated to the display?
Also, I have been trying to communicate with the company, IDD, but their website doesn't seem to be working. The freezing portion sounds more like a memory issue than anything else.

However, have you tried uninstalling/reinstalling the application? I have not tried reinstalling the application. Seems rather an obvious option I haven't thought of. I'll give it a try, thanks.no problem. Well, I uninstalled this application and reinstalled it. No change, same issue. And now another problem. I am still in the process of trying to rebuild the system, but some programs such as iTunes says I need SP2. no problem, I downloaded SP3, but as soon as I install it the computer loads Bios and wont load windows, just keeps restarting. last known config, normal, SAFE mode, none of them have any effect. in order to GET windows back, I am forced to do a repair install and SUDDENLY stuck with SP1a again. I know this computer doesn't have any virus' because before I put it on line I DL'd AVG, firefox and installed Nvidia firewall from my USB HDD.

Solve : How to change Windows Media Player 11 Video Codec??

Answer»

I've been installing a fresh version of WIN XP Pro and all programs. When I play a video in Windows Media Player 11, there's a purple tinge over the whole screen. The video seems fine otherwise. WMP default codec is "Windows Media 9". How do I change the video codec for WMP?

I use SageTV to record TV shows. Within SageTV, you can choose which video codec to use. I'm thinking if I change the default Windows video codec, this will FIX the problem.

Under Device Manager, Sound & Video Game CONTROLLERS, there's a listing for Video Codecs. Is there a way to change/reinstall?

I've installed/uninstalled NVIDIA video codecs before, but not the Windows default codec.Download: http://www.free-codecs.com/XP_Codec_Pack_download.htm, and see, if it helps...I was finally able to figure out the default video codec.
