Solve : Compaq Presario 1201T Problem...?

Answer»

I think this thread would GO here, lol.

So, I RECENTLY got a Compaq Presario 1201T and started it up.
It loads the red Compaq screen, then it shows a black screen with a LITTLE white thing blinking in the top left corner, then it goes crazy, heres a video to what it does, because i can't really explain it better.

Here's the Video

EDIT: I forgot to mention that it operates on Windows ME.Hmm might be a BIOS problem since the computer doesn't seem to get FAR ENOUGH to start booting the OS.

Try reseting the BIOS settings. You should be able to enter the BIOS config by hitting either F2, F10 or F12 when the red Compaq logo appears.

Solve : dell xp?

Answer»

My HELP backfired. I sent my brother a program to find duplicate FILES and he called to say that he used it found alot of them kept the latest and deleted the others. When he tried to turn on the computer he gets a preliminary indication which turns into a screen that says ntldr needed and can go no further. He has the reinstall cd disk xpwith patch 2 that came with the computer which I had him put in drive and start computer cd light blinks but does not read disk. He like me has limited knoledge so we need help.
What can we do to get the computer to run. If I down load the BOOT disk that I can get on the microsoft site and mail them to him will that WORK. Since he cannot get his to work, I am hoping that with the proper info I can undo my good intentions. I guess that some critical file has been deleted that causes it to fail to boot up. can anyone help me with this? If more info is required I can contact him to get it.
Thanks "Geegee" Geegee.... I see there a several threads on missing ntldr ...you can go to search in upper right hand of your screen and type "missing ntldr"...Hopefully you will find your answer in there!! Geegee, lots of good info. here.http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&q=ntldr&meta=
Quote

He has the reinstall cd disk xpwith patch 2
I assume it's Recovery Disk? It should be bootable.

- Insert Recovery CD into the computer.
- Restart.
- When prompted to press any key to boot from the CD, press any key.

I don't remember, though, if it has "Repair" option.
Anyway, try the above, and post back, what the options are.Broni, I'm quite sure that the recovery disk will not allow repairs. It will wipe the HDD and restore to the original state. It would be important to know what the disk says EXACTLY on it. IF it is a recovery disk supplied from the MANUFACTURER, is it the correct one for that machine? If not and is a Windows CD is it a real one with a hologram on it?

Solve : Loading up XP??

Answer»

Righto..
Well..I have no idea what has happened to my laptop, it was working fine yesterday, then it started to run really SLOWLY, then the menubar thingy at the bottom of the page (blue bar with GREEN start button) dissappeared and I couldnt move to pages (although I could Alt-Tab to move through the pages.)
I left the laptop for a while to see if it would fix itself, it didnt, so I had to manually shutdown the laptop.
When I tried to turn the laptop back on again, it starts to load fine, having the black screen with the Windows XP logo and the loading bar, then it loads to a blue screen that also has the Windows XP logo and wont load any further.

I tried to get the laptop to run through safe mode, but it still ends up stuck at the same point. It is really annoying.

Is there anything I can do to resolve this problem?
Any help would be great thankyou!!"windows won't start even in Safe Mode or has other serious PROBLEMS that can't be fixed with system restore"

Hi, when you hit F8 and you see the computer Startup option....
Hit the "Last Know good configuration"

if that dosn't work... TRy Using Safe Mode With Command Prompt to access System Restore:

once login Type: %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe in the blank, and then press enter key.

after several seconds, the system restore windows appears. Click the Restore my computer to an earlier time button.
In the calendar ... click a day when your Computer was working properly, and then click the next button.

To Confirm your choice, click Next.
The system Restore process begins, Moments latter, your computer automatically restarts itself. When it boots up, Follow the on-screen instructions.

if everything works good, check for a virus even if you think you may not even have one!

get back and Let me know how things worked out.

goodluck! spider have you install anything before it happen?i suggest format the laptop.
kuszmania9999, before you give anyone instruction... I would do some research before

giving that Option! Only because They can lose Important Information that maybe Value to them.

Yes.. this maybe the case but, we don't know that yet and they may need there data.

The trouble SHOOTING I'm giving is correct and I would copy this info for safe keeping..... Just in case someone else is having the same issue in the future.... it could be you or me.

have you install anything before it happen?i suggest format the laptop.

formatting does fix problems as long as hard drive is not broken and that the hard drive can recognize windows.

but you can't always revert to formatting unless you really do have no other option.

So yeah, try last good known configuration, then if no good, reboot to safe mode with command prompt and use the system restore's command prompt option to restore computer, provided there is a restore point you can use.

Solve : help installing windows XP on new computer?

Answer»

I'm attempting to install a official version of windows XP Professional edition on my new computer.

I had mucked around with Fedora (linux) whilst awaiting the arrival of XP.

ANYWAY I used a Windows ME boot disk to delete the linux partition and add a dos partition.

anyway when I try to boot, it says press any key to boot from cd, after pressing any key it says its analysing my system then the screen goes blank, and the windows installation doesn't begin.

Any body have any suggestions, the cd runs fine from my other computer (used to post this msg. (except I need to keep swapping mouse/keyboard/moniter as I have 2 computers and only one set of periphiels)

HELP!Two questions:
1. Does your screen goes black after you press Enter at "Welcome to Setup" screen?
2. Do you wait long enough? That black screen may hang up there for several minutes (15-20).I would say that if it takes that long to analyse the system then traces of the Linux install are still there perhaps...
Did you remember to set the first partition "active" when using FDisk ? ?

Quote

1.Remove native, swap, and boot partitions used by Linux:
a. Start your computer with the Linux setup floppy disk, type fdisk at the command prompt, and then press ENTER.

NOTE: For help using the Fdisk tool, type m at the command prompt, and then press ENTER.
b. Type p at the command prompt, and then press ENTER to display partition INFORMATION. The first item listed is hard disk 1, partition 1 information, and the second item listed is hard disk 1, partition 2 information.
c. Type d at the command prompt, and then press ENTER. You are then prompted for the partition number you want to delete. Type 1, and then press ENTER to delete partition number 1. Repeat this step until all the partitions have been deleted.
d. Type w, and then press ENTER to write this information to the partition table. Some error messages may be generated as information is written to the partition table, but they should not be significant at this point because the next step is to restart the computer and then install the new operating system.
e. Type q at the command prompt, and then press ENTER to quit the Fdisk tool.
f. Insert EITHER a bootable floppy disk or a bootable CD-ROM for the Windows operating system on your computer, and then press CTRL+ALT+DELETE to restart your computer.
2.Install Windows. Follow the installation instructions for the Windows operating system you want to install on your computer. The installation process assists you with creating the appropriate partitions on your computer.

Two questions:
1. Does your screen goes black after you press Enter at "Welcome to Setup" screen?
2. Do you wait long enough? That black screen may hang up there for several minutes (15-20).

to answer 1, I don't get to the welcome to setup screen, I hit any key, then get one line saying Setup is determining your computer hardware for installation (or words to that effect). This is followed by the blank screen.

To question two, I just waited 6 hours and got nothing, It appears to be frozen as the computer thinking light is permanently on.

I was unable to format from the me rescue disk as it advised this FEATURE isn't supported by Win me.

one other point. When I used Fdisk I deleted all partitions and created 1 (primary) dos partition. I get the feeling it wasn't completely UNINSTALLED as not booting from cd (I have no floppy drive) causes a comand prompt program "GNU grub" to begin.Have you tried Active @ KillDisk ?

http://www.killdisk.com/downloadfree.htm

The site recommends there free ISO Burner ,See Below Link.

http://www.ntfs.com/iso-burning.htmThe instructions above will get rid of the bootloader ( which as you see can cause havoc ) and the MBR...
Any version of FDisk after DOS 5.2 will work with this procedure.I didn't think ME fdisk could remove a linux partition, it's been a long time for me (10 yrs) but I thought only linux fdisk could manipulate linux partitions. I was under the same impression...this may be one of those times when MS is wrong about something...

The quote you put up from Microsoft says to use the linux fdisk Patio but the OP said he used the ME fdisk on the linux partitions which I don't believe works.Quote

This came from the same MS page as well.

Solve : problem reinstalling dll file?

Answer»

I wrote a post earlier about a problem with msvcr7.dll and I want to thank those that tried to help however I gave some wrong info so now I'll TRY to correct it. I'm trying to install avast anti-virus and I can install it but can't get it to run because I get this message application FAILED to start because mscr71.dll was not found. Reinstalling the application MAY fix this problem. Someone gave me a site to go to that might help reinstall this file it was www.dll-files.com/. It seeemed to have this file available but it comes in a zipped file and you have to buy a program to unzip it or open it. I don't know anything about zipped files. Is there another place or way to reinstall this file. I have windows xp home edition. Thanks for any help you can give!DLoad and install 7Zip which will handle all types of compressed files....zips are just one of many types it handles.
When unzipping a file you are simply un-compressing it back to its normal size...it's BEST to create a Temp directory for this that's empty so when it's un-comressed you know all the files in that directory belong in the original zipped file.

7 Zip

Choose the first DLoad at the top of the page.

Good LUCK and let us know...Thanks patio for your help. I downloaded 7zip and after a little study on how to use it I got it to work and got my problem with the msvce71.dll file resolved. Once again thanks for your help time and patience.Good to hear you are fixed up...stop by anytime.

I tried getting into DOS that didnt work. I dont have the recovery DISC as these computers were bought through a place that was suppose to provide the support, but went out of business since. My question is can I make another recovery disc from the other computer running the same software??? If so will I loose the information on that is different from on computer to the other? I found this on google. It may help you.
HTTP://support.microsoft.com/kb/324103You're best bet would be to borrow a Win2K CD and run the Recovery Console.

Solve : Can a Windows reinstall save data??

Answer»

My old genealogy COMPUTER crashed this morning. I would like to save the data. The Windows CD has a repair option, but it asks for a password, which I didn't set and don't have.

I put in the System Mechanic rstore disk but I have to ckick a button to start it and I can't click anything.

The 5 restore floppies from the Windows wep PAGE don't do anything without the running the Windows CD as well.

What else can I do to kick start this computer?

SandyThe HDD doesn't have to be able to BOOT to Windows to retrieve the data...the safest method right now would be to remove the drive and hook it up as a slave drive in a working machine with a burner.
Retrieve and burn to CD whatever data you need.
There is a repair method to re-install Windows but the risk of data loss is still there so try the above method first.

Solve : User?

Answer»

Hello,

when i use

@echo off
net user admin_name pass_word /add
net localgroup /add administrators admin_name

to make a new admin account on my pc it only works when im computer administrator and when i try to do it from a limited account it doesnt work..

can anyone tell me why and how i fix this?

ty in advanceI am surprised that you ask this question, when you clearly appear to know the answer.

Quote

it only works when im computer administrator and when i try to do it from a limited account it doesnt work..

Before reading any further, have a little think and see if you can guess!

OK you didn't get it...

"The "limited" in "limited account" means "having limited permissions to alter the system".

Why doesn't it work?

Because only administrators or users with administrator permissions can do those things. Microsoft made it that way. Try to guess why!

If you cannot create a new account on a Windows XP computer, the problem involves permissions. More than likely, you are not logged onto the computer with an administrator account. The administrator account is the initial account that was created when you installed Windows XP. You can also use a different user account that you MIGHT have created later.

How to fix it?

Fix it by either giving the desired user account administrator privileges or logging in as administrator.

Ok Maybe my fault, didn't make things clear.

cant create an account from limited account: general truth

the thing i ask is if any way to create another administrator(privileges) account from a limited(privileges) account.

and the point of all this is if somebody ever LOSE the administrator password can LOG in from another account and create another admin. account.

in my case: i work on the pc in a admin. account(password protected) and i have another limited account on the pc for my roomate. figure out the rest.Simple answer is no. You cannot create an administrator account from a limited account. As far as I know there is no way around it.

However if you use the net users command from a limited account you can change the password of another account without knowing the original password. However I am not going to post how to do that on these forums, that is SOMETHING you will have to find out on your own. It is only to be used on home computers. I strongly disagree with this being used in a work environment as it could result in the loss of ones job.

As far as i know there is no way to do thisi know the net users thingy but i thought it didnt work from limited. i will try itI don't know if that works for creating a user though. It doesn't create a user. it erases the old password.

i tried it and it doesn't work from limited user.. I just saw a list of links to ways of recovering a lost admin password. I wonder if anyone can guess how i found it?
nvm THNX all for the replays i just saw that questions like this are often misunderstood because some people may use them for bad. Let's face it, a system that ***just*** relies on the admin password for protection is wide open. Google will tell you that. We get the schoolkids on here wanting to know how to play pranks, etc, and of course we don't tell them how to do it, but the real pros don't ask "How can I break the admin password" on web forums.

Solve : Absolutely CANNOT get rid of logon prompt?

Answer»

I'm working on my sister's pc--Win ME. Can't get rid of the LOGON prompt when booting up. She's the sole user with no User

Profiles. I've been online all day in almost every help forum (including this one) trying to find a REAL solution to this

problem and hope that someone (hopefully a pc guru) may be of help.

Here's what I've done so far:

Searched for *.pwl files and renamed with .old extension--didn't work

Deleted above renamed files--didn't work

Deleted all *.Pwl files--didn't work

Opened system.ini with Notepad and removed all lines in the Passwords section, then saved--didn't work

Msconfig>System.ini tab>unchecked Passwords box--didn't work

Installed TWEAKUI>Paranoia tab>checked "Clear Last User at logon"--didn't work

also, in TweakUI>Logon tab>checked "Logon automatically at system startup" (with "Clear Last User" setting disabled as
per instructions--didn't work

Control Panel>Network>Primary Network Logon>Window Logon--didn't work

Control Panel>Passwords>checked "All users of this computer use the same....."--didn't work

At Login Prompt, typed a Username, but didn't go near Password box, clicked OK, then rebooted--didn't work

Right clicked for Properties of "My Network Places" icon on Desktop--same thing as Control Panel>Network ("Network Neighbor-
hood" didn't appear on Desktop after format--just "My Network Places"

I realize that I/she can just hit Enter or Cancel to get past it, but it's a pain in the a** when it could (and did) boot

directly into Windows w/o all this happy horse manure. I'm at a loss as to what to do now and hope that someone can steer me

in the RIGHT DIRECTION to fix this. Ain't sceered to mess around in Regedit as long as instructions are detailed. I know

just enough to be dangerous in there even with backing it up first. Any help will be GREATLY appreciated.

HP xe783
Windows ME v.4.90.3000

512MB RAM
Internet connection via cable

Try reading this article from Microsoft.Sorry Saviour. Forgot to mention in my original post that I've been there--done that too. lolForget the previous comment I made here...it asked about Profiles...I see you've already checked that...my bad.

I know you said you've tried the previous link I sent...but did you try this?

How To Cache Your Windows NT Domain Password in Windows 85/98/Me

Couldn't hurt...Saviour, I'll be sure to give your last suggestion an eyeball tomorrow and let u know if anything good comes of it.Hopefully...it'll work...I'll stay tuned...emptypockets62426...

The following link appears to present four simple steps to remove logon prompt on Windows 9x/ME systems:

http://aumha.org/win4/a/nopwdlog.htm

Its instructions per TweakUI differ from your actions. They say 'In TweakUI, on the Paranoia tab, disable the option to “Clear last user at logon.”' They make no reference to any other TweakUI options.

I THINK this link may be helpful... dahlarbearSaviour, thanks for your suggestion about reading the link "How To Cache Windows NT Domain Password....". Unfortunately, that didn't help in my situation.

dahlarbear, thanks to u also for input, but I noticed that blunder too and changed it--didn't work.

Still got my fingers crossed that I can finally master this problem. Just irks me to no end that I KNOW it can be done cuz I've done it before on other Win ME systems, but this one is just trying to be a a**hole (excuse the language) about it, it seems. DLoad and install the PowerToys collection for Win98...they will run fine on ME.
There is a tool in TweakUI that will do just this...Thanks patio, but been there-done that--didn't work. Hoping for a registry hack to fix it. Nothing else has worked.A backup, format and reinstall will fix it...LOL!This might be worth a shot...

* Run the Registry Editor (REGEDIT.EXE).
* Open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ Network\ Logon
* Double-click on the Process Logon Script value, and change the data from 00 00 00 00 to 00 00 00 01Quote from: emptypockets62426 on October 05, 2007, 07:34:36 PM

Are you saying TweakUI did not work ? ? ?A big thanks to all of u who offered advice on fixing this logon prompt prob. Now I won't have to break out the bottle of Jack Daniels (lol) cuz I got a solution that worked for me at CyberTech help forum:

Try this Reg Hack but only if your comfortable doing it.

1. Click Start - Run, type in REGEDIT, then click OK. This will open the registry editor.

2. Click the + in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE - Software - Microsoft - Windows - CurrentVersion - Network.

3. In the Network sub-menu, click directly on Real Mode Net to expose its entries in the right pane.

4. If you see AutoLogon listed, right-click it, then click Modify.

5. Change the value from whatever it is to 00 00 00 00 (all zeros), then click OK.

6. If AutoLogon is not present, right-click an empty space in the right pane, then click New - Binary Value.

7. Type in AutoLogon (exactly as you see it here), then press the Enter key to lock in the name.

8. Do steps #4 and #5.

9. Close the registry editor, then reboot.

On second thought, maybe I DO need to get the bottle of Jack and celebrate. BTW, how do I mark this post "SOLVED" in case anyone else runs into the same headache?

Solve : Problem playing video files(recurring errors >.>)?

Answer»

I keep getting errors whenever I try to play any video in any player I've installed on my computer. Frim BS Player to M player to VLC, they all spout the message:

"X has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

It started off with Windows explorer doing this to me(after browsing through media usually), and now, though it still does, so do all my video files. It's killing me! I'm missing out on all my favorite shows! heh, any help that can be given would be greatly appreciated. Even if its just giving me a media player that works.

I'm running a copy of Windows XP, I have Avast running all the time. I have integrated audio and visual as far as I know. Usually when I get a problem with my computer, I just run Kill disk and reinstall Windows, but now I'm kinda.. I like my computer

Thank you,
Alan "Xero" CInstall HIJACKTHIS, and post its log in "Computer Viruses and Spyware" forum.
http://majorgeeks.com/download3155.htmlOkies, here I go, REPOSTING in the "Computer Viruses and Spyware" forum along with the HijackThis log.

Thank you! When did this problem start?

Does it happen in SAFE mode ? I can't really remember when exactly the problem started, but it started first with BS player and windows Explorer, both spouting out the "X has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." message. Since that first time, I started using VLC, which worked fine, and then WHAM, no media Player worked after that...

No, I can't play media in Safe Mode either. Where are these video files from ? ?no Video File.. well, no AVI files.. I should test out other video types... I don't think MP4 works either, but I'll try that next...

Solve : Key board setting/annoyance?

Answer»

Hey I dont know whether this goes here or not but someone will tell
I have Windows XP SP2, running on a NEC Versa E2000
Im getting really annoyed with the key board because when even I want to use the "~`'. keys I have to push them and then push space bar for it to show up or for speech marks I can continue typing then it will show but to close I must push " key then space bar, then space bar again to make a space.
How on earth do you get rid of this godforsaken feature?
Would you rephrase, because I don't understand what your problem is.When typing to insert a speeck mark I have to press the speechmark key, (nothing shows up) then push the spacebar(speechmark shows up) if i want a further space after that i must push space bar again so how do i make it that when i want to insert a speechmark all i have to do is push the speechmark key, and not the speechmark key then space.Does it do this in all your PROGRAMS?Try another keyboard...Google reveals that the NEC Versa E2000 is a laptop.

Replacement keyboards are advertised in the UK for 69 UK pounds (140 USD approx) plus 17.5% TAX (not payable on exported items)

Has it recently STARTED doing this?

Maybe you have some kind of keyboard accessibility feature enabled. Check your manual.

Maybe just some cleaning is NEEDED. Get a can of compressed air, hold your laptop upside down, and use your compressed air to blow garbage out.Nothing to do with keyboard or dirt, same for anyother keyboard.
Programming somewhere has always done it.
seems to be programmed in the for the speech mark to show you must push space after.

Solve : Sygate Personal Firewall problem ***Begging for help!***?

Answer»

I just INSTALLED Sygate Personal Firewall.

When I visit certain websites, Sygate Firewall blocks FIREFOX from accessing the internet.
Now I have Connection Timeouts. I exited SPF and turned Windows Firewall back on, but I still have the problem!

Anyone who had this problem and managed to fix it?

By the way, the website that was blocked is the document showing me how to unblock it

Thank you in advance.Did you uninstall Sygate? If not, it still may have some services running.Did you click OK when Sygate asked you if it should allow Firefox to access the internet?
You would also have to check the box to tell Sygate to 'remember the setting'.
Same goes for email, IMs, FTP, or anything else that needs to access the net including programs wanting to update.
You only have to tell Sygate once, it has a good memory. Yes, I click 'OK' and 'Remember this setting'.
But after 5 seconds or something like that it just said "Sygate has blocked FIREFOX.EXE".

I remember an article that said Firefox uses ICMP 3 and 4, but Sygate blocks it.I don't have Firefox so I can't comment on that sorry.

Edit: If you right click on the Sygate Icon in the taskbar and select "Applictions' you will see what's going on.The web page is blocked in IE too - with both firewalls off!Maybe the page is down...
Could you give us a link?I think this is it:
http://forums.sygate.com/vb/showthread.php?s=a6d2faf0bbc90ca9a59d209ecfbcc5c5&threadid=12518That link wont work.

Solve : problem copying files to cd-rom drive?

Answer»

I want to put some zip files onto cd's, but I get a message saying the files may be in use, or write PROTECTED. But neither is the case, and I don't KNOW what to do to fix the problem.

Windows 98. 56k modem, if that info is needed.

Do you need any other info about my comp? I'm not on it right now, as I have no internet, so I can't easily get the info, if it's needed. It's been a while since I used Win98 but I don't think you can copy files to a cd. You will need to BURN them to the cd. When do you get this error message? What CD burning program do you use? Check here:

http://www.askdavetaylor.com/how_do_i_write_files_to_a_cdrom_in_windows_98.htmldo you have a cd burner? you can't just copy files to a cd if you are not using a cd WRITER (akla cd burner) and cd-r media. the program you use need to be win 98 compatible and have no problem detecting your cd writer with no problem.

or other option you can do is buy yourself a new cd writer , there are ones out there for around $25, if you are willing to spend a bit of money.
First of all... do you have a cd burner? if not go to www.geeks.com

check them out! goodLuck spider

Solve : no bootable device + lost system restore disk?

Answer»

Howdy, first of all any help anyone can give me would be STELLAR. My PC has been shooting out a "no bootable device" error when I attempt to boot up. It asks for a boot disk but I don't have one. I can't locate my system restore disk at all and i'm not sure I ever received one. The OS is windows xp sp2.

thanksCan you get into the setup utility? If you can, does it recognize your HDD?I can get to the BIOS setup yes, and how can i tell that?
What is your first boot device? Are there any disks in your disk drives? When you go into the BIOS... you might want to SET your Bios back to its default...

or OPEN up your PC and check your cables and see if its connected right..... if you have another IDE or SATA cable, try it out and see if it works!

goodluck. spiderTry changing the primary boot device to ide 0 or ide 1

Solve : Background On Desktop Went Away?

Answer»

I THANK you in advance for any help. I am on a computer with Windows XP.

I have looked for this problem and could not find it.

I am unsure if it even belongs here, so please bear with me.

I tried to change the image on my Desktop, by right clicking an image and choosing Set As Desktop Background. INSTEAD of the image, I am greeted by an empty, white Desktop with a Picture Icon in the top right corner. Even setting the background as one of the images that come with Windows, does not change the background.

The image is only visible for a short time after Start Up or Log In, before the icons appear, and after Shut Down or Log Out, after the icons disappear. It is only a minor annoyance, but I have to wonder if this problem could spread.

So here are my questions, What made my Desktop disappear? And, Is this something I should be worried about?

Thank you in advance for any help or thoughts on this topic.Try System RESTORE...Toboe, that's just weird!

When you right click on the desktop then select properties then select the desktop tab, what picture is showing as the desktop bg?are the wallpaper from the internet?did you save the image in your hdd?
try to save the image in the hdd & then right click it select as background.Interesting..
My son's computer has done the same thing.
I tried to assign a new picture for the desk top but the silly thing will not let me.
I can only change the desktop color....
As kuszmania9999 pointed out, are you TRYING to change the desktop bg to a picture you have saved onto your PC or to a picture on the web?In my case the pictures are saved to the hard drive.

The system acts like the permission for this feature has been turned off...

Solve : System running incredibly slow?

Answer»

I just recently fixed a PROBLEM on my computer, and now it seems that I have another.

I'm using a Dell Dimension 8300 thats about 5-6 years old, and I'm running Windows XP Home Edition, Service Pack 2. It has an Intell Pentium 4 CPU 3.00GHZ, and 512 MB of RAM. I use EZ Armor Firewall and eTrust Anti-Virus, along with AVG Free Version Anti-Virus. I also have Ad-Aware SE Personal version, also free, for catching spyware.

I just recently removed a troublesome driver from my SYSTEM, and it no longer crashes frequently like it used to. However, it's now running incredibly slow and freezing up all the time, for no clear reason. I had a friend of mine come and look at it, and he updated the video card and changed all of the settings for performance over quality, and even that made no difference. It takes the system almost 5 minutes to start up, and it takes almost a minute for it to open a program.

When I open My Computer or Control Panel, it takes about 30 seconds for it to load the things inside it, while it gives me the flashlight graphic. That's never happened before. This computer has gone through periods of running slow before, but it's never run this slow or taken so long to run before. The hard drive is not full; It has 112 GB capacity and is only using 40% of that right now - 67.3 GBs are still free. I've defragmented and cleaned up unused programs and checked for viruses and spyware. I have no idea what to do to make it run faster. I think something's seriously wrong with it.

What should I do?

Running two anti-virus programs at once on the same computer will certainly affect performance and can cause instability.Sounds like my machine. Lucky to get an open window. It has been really bad yesterday and today. I read a lot of the stuff on this site under general troubleshooting. I discovered the prefetch FILE or folder under C/windows/prefetch and deleted all the files therein. Yesterday my net provider said my modem or radio as they call it was junk so they gave me a new one. Just before getting here today to read your post I restarted and pressed F8 right at startup to get to one of the Windows diagnostic screens and selected "start from the most recent time your computer worked". After doing that there was a very significant improvement. I don't think my HD is bad. I'm guessing it's software. I asked at Best Buy/big money for them to work on it/ but he did mention memory going bad and gave me a price on checking it out. I think he meant the actual chip. I'm looking for a way to check it out. I'm also considering that the many programs I have deleted may have left troublesome things yet to be removed. I thnk you can buy software for that. I assume you know about clearing all the temp files and cookies, historys etc. The antiviruses/spyware and registry make the machine slower and slower up to your point. Either reinstall Windows (SIMPLY back the files you need first) or more easily, add a good gigabite to your memory. I bet my girlfriends panties (cleaned) that this will make a huge difference.Have you read the first two entries on this forum? Good stuff!Fresh install would do the job...

Solve : Add or remove programs list issues? Or something more sinister....??

Answer»

I am running Win XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service pack 2 and have a question about the Add and REMOVE Programs screen.
My question is that I seem to have this large blanked out space between the listing of two of the programs. The screen is either blacked out or has alternating wide black/white stripes. I am concerned that maybe something has taken over part of my machine and is HIDING the listing.
Is that possible? If it was caused by something malicious, how do I remove the blanked out part? Or is it nothing to be concerned about?
The computer itself is a Compaq Presario w/Celeron 2.53 GHz and 760 MB ram.

TIA for any help,

No. I have not.If you've updated and run antivirus and antispyware scans and have come up with nothing, then I wouldn't be too concerned. Sometimes windoze just messes up and doesn't know how to fix itself.

Alan <>< Could be a badly coded program uninstaller. For example, AutoCAD is famous for causing this problem, it creates an incorrect registry entry for the uninstaller icon.

You may want to get "X-Setup", and see what it finds. It used to be free, not it's a shareware, but it should be functional enough for your problem.
A lot of good reading here: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/170295-46-remove-programs-empty-spaceOut of curiosity what does the Tools section of Ccleaner show, you may even be able to delete the blank space from there.
If not a quick Google for "add remove" +white brings up plenty of remedies.I just remembered the other APP that causes this Photoshop...Thanks for the tips..
I will try one or more when I get the chance...

Hello
I have a problem during start up! I GET a DLL error message, it says that it cant be found!
How do i get rid of it? I have had it months now. Well, Westy, a lot depends on which dll it is that cannot be found, and as you haven't told us that, helping you is going to be a bit like voodoo or black magic. Why don't you help avoid that by TELLING us?

Sorry i hopeless with computers
C:\PROGRA~1\MYWEBS~1\bar\2.bin\MWSBAR.DLLYou have found out that "free" software often BRINGS hidden costs!

This is from the "My Web Search" toolbar which is downloaded and installed with SEVERAL different "free" products.

Getting rid of mwsbar.dll, or references to it, isn't terribly difficult. The first step is simple: go to Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs... and look for and uninstall "My Web Search Bar".

Restart the machine and see if the problem is gone.

If that does not work, use this link and follow the instructions.

Solve : What A Mess- User Accounts?

Answer»

I had a problem this morning and have spent the last 4 1.2 hours trying to solve it but I am gettng deeper and deeper into trouble. This is Windows XP Home.

Firefox would't come up on my screen. I tried loading it up in Firefox safe mode and Windows safe mode but that didn't help. Task Manager said it was, but I couldn't see it.

So I created a second user account. Funny, but that user account never comes up a a choice, so I tunned on the guest account. I needed to download a program but the guest account had no administrative privlidges so I couldn't load it after I downloaded it. I So I gave the second account administrative privlidges, which removed it from my "real" account. Now the progrm refuses to load in the guest acocunt, and the the real account still won't load windows. You may suggest I use IE, which is what I'm doing now, but what I'm doing REQUIRES another thing that doesn't work on IE, Safari or any other IE related progam. I have tried system restore and that did'nt help, as did not unstalling and reinstalling Firefox.

How can I get administrative rights back on my real account and delete the guest account and the other account that dosen't show?

Sandy
I once had Firefox refusing to run, and I had to delete the Firefox user profile. It survives a Firefox uninstall/reinstall.

It seems to be a fairly common bug.

A profile in Firefox is a collection of bookmarks, browser settings, extensions, passwords, and history; in short, all of your personal settings. These items are stored in a special profile folder on your hard drive. Each user has one of its own.

In Windows XP, it is located as follows:

C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default\

The xxxxxxxx is simply a collection of 8 random numbers and characters, used to ensure that each profile is UNIQUE. Firefox automatically creates this. When Firefox is in use, it locks the active profile to keep other programs from altering the contents or causing conflicts. This lock is normally transparent to the user, but sometimes the profile remains locked when it's not expected.

You may not have to actually delete the profile, you may only need to delete a file CALLED parent.lock which may be in your profile folder.

So I suggest you follow these steps (They may work)

Give your regular user account its admin privileges back.

Log in to that account and do not start Firefox.

Check in Task Manager that Firefox is not running.

Look in the profile folder for that user and see if parent.lock is present. If it is, delete it.

Now try running Firefox.

If it does not run, you could try the scattergun approach of BACKING up everything in the profiles folder (by copying it all to another folder) and then deleting everything. If Firefox starts up OK, then you could copy back your bookmarks.htm file, etc.

Thank you. I now have a workable Firefox but I guess I still don't have installation rights. Setup fatal error: Unable to generate installation log file.

SandyWhat software are you trying to install? Are you logged in with Admin rights?
I downloaded mouse and key recorder and can't load that. But it's worse. I can't move ANYTHING off it to another computer to prepare to formate it and start over so I loose all that - including my genealogy.

I do not have administrator rights and I can't get administrator rights. I gave it to guest and guest wasn't allow to have it. My account is now limited as is guest.

My computer has no administrative rights and I can't network, I can't restore and I can't run System Mechanic.

SandyI don't understand why you cannot log in as administrator. How did you "give" admin rights to guest? Have you set admin password?

Try ThisIt says:

"How to take ownership of a folder Note You must be logged on to the computer with an account that has administrative credentials. If you are running Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, you must start the computer in safe mode, and then log on with an account that has Administrative rights to have access to the Security tab."

I do not have any administrative credentials on that computer.Quote

I do not have any administrative credentials on that computer.

Why not? Every PC has an admin account. I do not see how you could have lost them.

Quote
So I gave the second account administrative privlidges, which removed it from my "real" account.

How did it do that?

PS it's "privileges"

Anyone know how this is done?

It's not always the best way to go. If I have 50 computers in three buildings that I'm trying install Adobe Reader onto, it really isn't very efficient to go to each and every one to click next 8 times. It would take a full shift to do it. And then, when an update is available for Snagit the next WEEK, there GOES another day.

Solve : Log In Window Won't Go Away?

Answer»

Thank you in advance for any help. I am using a Windows XP computer.

I have searched for this difficult question, but have not found it.

I am not even sure if it belongs here, so please be patient with me.

My computer, when it starts, gives me the basic dialog box asking for Name and Password. I decided one day I did not like that...No one else uses this computer. So I went into my Settings to change it from the Log In box to the Welcome Screen, which if the user does not have a password, simply brings you to your desktop. But when I clicked Change the Way Users Log On and Off, a diaologue box popped up, and it READ, "Client Services for NetWare has disabled the Welcome screen and Fast User SWITCHING. To use these features, you must uninstall Client Services for NetWare."

So I went into Services in my computer, right clicked on Client Services for NetWare, which was supposed to give me a DISABLE option. It did not. So, following my own computers instructions, I tried to delete the program. Still nothing. So, following my computers instructions again, I tried to Enable, than Disable, but when I tried, my computer told me this option was unavaliable. As in I can not disable or enable Client Services for NetWare.

So, my computer tells me I need to Disable this program, which can not be disabled, to get rid of my Log In dialogue box. This is a lot of trouble for saving 30 seconds, but I still wonder if this is a problem that could grow.

All in short, How do I turn off my Log In dialog box? And, What does Client Services for NetWare actually do?

Thank you for your thought and help.Double post...TOPIC Closed.

After the disconnect i the computer doesnt respond to my commands and the screen turns off. Im running windows xp.

A program shuts down, or you are playing on-line, and get disconnected, or???It has nothing to do with the net connection. Its the computer that does somthing. Its like it does into a power saving mode but i cant recall it. When i want to start the CUMPUTER and use it again i have to turn it off first.Go to Start / Settings / Control Panel / Power Options. Check and make sure that Standby is not checked and under the Hybernate tab that is also unchecked.

Solve : understanding programmes in con fig system?

Answer»

i am trying to make my xp computer run faster when i go on system config there are loads and loads of programmes that i DONT know what they are - how do i know which ones to delete? and where can i go to find out?You do not delete programs. They should be uninstalled using control panel, add/remove programs. To determine what they are click on start, all programs and run each one. That way you will know which ones to delete. Uninstalling programs will not necessarily make your computer run faster unless your HDD is really loaded to the max. Download and run ccleaner at least once a WEEK. This will certainly improve your performance. Also where do you say you're seeing all these programs? I assume you're using msconfig but what tab are you looking at?I suspect he is looking at services rather than programs.Quote

i am trying to make my xp computer run faster when i go on system config there are loads and loads of programmes that i dont know what they are
This is a very GOOD question.
Yes, the less entries there, the BETTER. Your computer will start faster, and then, while in Windows will respond faster, if you have less applications running in a background.
Unchecking entries in "msconfig/startup tab" DON'T uninstall programs. It only prevents them from running at the startup.
You have to be carefull, though, because, if you uncheck some crucial startup, your computer may not work properly.
You won't damage anything, since NONE of crucial system startups are there, but you have to know what you are doing.
If you wish, you can install "Autoruns" (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/Utilities/AutoRuns.mspx), click on "Logon" tab there, and post a screenshot of it.
I'll help you with telling, which program you need as a startup, which you don't.

Solve : Ctrl key stuck?

My computer thinks the ctrl key is stuck at random times. I am using a Dell Laptop that is only one year old. This computer has a docking station and I use an external keyboard and monitor.

When I type on the keyboard at random times it thinks I am holding down the CTRL key. I am aware of sticky keys and there is nothing enabled there. I have switched out the keyboard but I still get the same problem COME back after a while. Any Ideas?

THANKSIF you are using Intellipoint mouse software this is a known problem. You could try altering some of the mouse button assignments or even uninstalling it completely.

I don't think, it's gonna help you, but you reminded me something.
I used to have that Toshiba computer, where no matter what I tried (including DIFFERENT KEYBOARDS), when I was typing anything in Netscape, or Netscape Mail, when I accidentally hit left CTRL button, it started to type different letters, then I was hitting on my keyboard.
The only remedy was to restart.
I drove me nuts to a POINT, that I simply REMOVED left CTRL button (right CTRL was not giving me any problem).
Well, what do you know about computers....LOLContrex,

Thats for the info. I will remove that software and hopefully this will resolve the problem.

Have you tried restarting the computer? Is there a video card or is this with onboard video? I have a video card in it since 3 yrs ago,I turned the computer on and the manual on my new tv said to increase my resolution for a better screen,So i did and then that is when i lost everything. When i reboot the computer up now all i get is a grn screen with nothing on it.I am able tp right click and click on properties where then i could change the resolution if the properties would open up but it dosen't the mouse hour glass makes a little movement bit then quits, and im back to a plain screen.Thank youIt MIGHT happened when you tried to set resolution up beyond what your video card supports.
Try to restart in Safe Mode (Windows will load only generic video driver), change your resolution to whatever Windows will allow in Safe Mode, and restart in Normal Mode.
How do i start it in safe mode when it doesn't ask if i want toRestart your computer and press the F8 key. You will get a few options of what you want to do. Choose to boot into safe mode.Alright ill try that and let you know what happens,Thank you for your time

Solve : Black log-on screen?

Answer»

My laptop is LOADING up completely fine but when I go to log on there is black screen with a box telling me to ENTER my username and password. I type them both in and my computer goes to log on but before the desktop etc APPEARS it decides to log off, saving my settings and goes back to the black screen telling me to log on again.

When this first happened and I logged on it told me that Windows was replaced and files were missing and I had to enter the Windows SP 2 disk.

Any help without having to use this diskl because I dont want to mess up the computer.

I have tried running the computer in safe MODE also but the same problem happens where there is a black screen asking me to log on and it goes back to the original spot after I enter my details.Quote

This sends up a red flag...does anyone else use this machine ? ?
If so they MAY have re-installed XP without your knowing...

Solve : missing a .dll I can't find (mlmlki.dll)?

Answer»

I GET this error message everytime I start my PC. I think it's from uninstalling a program, but I don't remember which one.

Error Loading C:\WINDOWS\mlmlki.dll

the specified module could not be found

I would insert the error message box here...but I don't know how to.

Please help! Are you sure of the spelling ? ?
Did you have WinFixer installed on that machine ? ?Is it "mllml.dll" rather?Quote from: Broni on October 07, 2007, 01:37:32 PM

Is it "mllml.dll" rather?
That's why i asked about WinFixer...Hi, what you want to do is GO to: Start-Run-type: msconfig click the startup tab on the top right.

Now you will see a list of programs uncheck one and apply and hit ok... it will ask you to restart the computer.

do this until the error stop... that is when you will know which program is CAUSING it!

Note: this will not hurt your PC!
good luck! spiderCould be Vundo. Either way, it's most likely malicious. Go ahead and download HijackThis to its own folder, scan, and post the results here. Don't make any changes until told to do so.

Solve : How do I remove a duplicate XP boot?

Answer»

I recently added an SATA drive to my system and installed XP-SP2 on it. The drive is supported from the mb rather than an addon card. I want it to be my primary boot drive due to the increased speed. I now have a dual boot system with the original XP installation residing on drive C:.

My question: Is it possible to remove the dual boot from boot.ini and remove the XP on drive C:? I'm assuming that I can't FORMAT the drive AFTERWARD because boot.ini lives on C. If this is true, how much of the old installation can I remove.

My bios is set to ALLOW the os to determine boot priorities and it APPEARS that I can't select the SATA as the 1st boot drive.

Thanks. You can edit boot.ini to only have one option, (the XP installed on the SATA drive) following which no menu will be presented, and the system will boot to that XP installation every time. Following that, I believe you can delete everything from the C: drive just leaving NTLDR, ntdetect.com and boot.ini in place in the root folder.

Perhaps it might be as well to do the deletion in stages, moving the files elsewhere first rather than simply deleting them straight away, so that you can correct any mistakes.

Solve : windows start button moved!! help?

Answer»

hi there im using my friend compaq laptop with windows XP and i think i accidently CLICKED SOMETHING when i was looking at some files and the satrt button moved from the botton left hand corner to the top right hand corner, i was wondering how do i move it back as im not very good with computers??, iv tried clicking and dragging/holding it down etc?

thanks !You need some practice, and you need to be patient.
Move your mouse pointer slowly toward the edge of taskbar, until it becomes double-arrow.
Keep dragging until the taskbar will double in width.
Release mouse, click inside new part of taskbar, you just created, hold mouse button, and drag a whole taskbar to the bottom of monitor screen. This had my EX wife foxed for weeks! When I showed her that you can drag the taskbar back with the mouse, she was amazed!

How to stop it happening again: right click the taskbar (when you have it where you want it) and check (tick) "lock the taskbar".

The fact is that there is no "right" place for the taskbar, Microsoft put it at the bottom of the screen by default, but you can have it at the top or on the right or left if you want.

Solve : How difficult is it to replace my hard drive????

Answer»

I THINK if I replace my Hard Drive, I will have less problems. (My HD is full)

ANYWAY, I FOUND some diagrams on google searches which show how to change a HD. It does not look difficult even though I have no clue whatsoever about the inside of a tower. Does anyone know of a super simple diagram? I called Sony and was told to get a 200GB or better but NOT a SATA.

One more thing...Once I change it, do I just load the XP Recovery discs? Will everything just load itself???This is one of the better ONLINE guides.

---->GoHere If you can install the new hard drive as a Slave you don't have to reinstall your operating system or programs. You could move existing data files to the new hard drive to free up space on your C: drive.

Solve : eliminting boot leg OS?

Answer»

..I have a boot-leg copy of windows XP Professional on my comp..(I'm innocent I bought the comp at a garage sale)and it won't let me update anything anymore...I also just got a windows XP Home with the upgrade. Can I use that...do I have to wipe Pro off the comp first? How do I get real? Thanks for any and all help b4hand Well the very first thing you do is backup any data that you want to keep. Then you format your computer and use your Windows XP Home disc to install Windows XP Home. Then upgrade to XP Pro. Then you will need to connect to Microsoft and download all your updates. Which, depending on when your XP Home was created, may be quite a few.Ok do I have to upgrade to Pro..? According to the stickers on the front, This comp came with XP Home on it and last owner changed it for some reason. And thanks for answering so quickly. If you have a copy of the Windows XP Home CD then you can install that and be fine. You don't have to upgrade to pro if you don't want to. That's personal preference really. I mean there are more options in Pro but nothing that the average user would really notice or miss.

But if you backup and then format and reinstall with the legit copy of Windows you will be fine. The updates may take awhile THOUGH. On the CD does it say it has Service Pack 2 included? If that's not included that will really increase how long the updates take. The New one I just got ...is XP Home with sp2 Upgrade...I was worried that I had to have XP Full...not the upgrade. Is that true?
I have a few more ??s if your willing to let me pick your brain some more.
When backing up My Docs..do I have to open a folder of pics or will they all be copied within each folder?Another thing to CONSIDER before formatting...you may want to make a backup with the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard.
This means after successfully formatting and setting up XP Home you transfer your old settings to the new build.
This will retain your Desktop, and any other tweaks you have made. I believe it saves Favorites from your browser and network settings as well. Thanks so much for all of the info hope I do it right...If so I will be back to see you all SOON...well maybe a day or so but wish me luck No Luck involved...just take your time and PAY attention...Also with the SP2 upgrade. That's not an upgraded version of Windows. That's still the full version of Windows except is has Service Pack 2 (SP2) slipstreamed into the INSTALLATION. So instead of downloading it afterwards it is installed when Windows is. I hope everything goes well for you. If you have more questions just let us know.

Solve : Very peculiar issue?

the only option may be to get the expensive video cable. the vga cable may not be able to handle the video card and the monitor.
I have a DVI cable that I bought for $50. It is not that. Another update. I went to the GeekSquad people and after about an hour of a bunch of geeks staring at the glaring case they concluded they do not have the equipment to check it out. Oh my dear holly Molly guys. Is that even possible?
Well so I took it home again and had some FREE time so I figured I would pull out my old CPU from my old computer and replace it for the new one. After about a half hour of TRYING to take off the *censored* Dell heatsink, I discovered, that even though the new mobo is said to be able to SUPPORT P4 CPUs, this one was just about old enough not to be supported. So I had to put itall back and LOST a good hour again. I have another computer with Pendium D CPU so I will try to abuse that one. Man am I glad I am not in the PC industry. My hair would be even whiter than it is now.

Solve : unwanted messages?

Answer»

Hello
I keep getting a MESSAGE that is "junk".
In attempting to eliminate it,I inadvertantly tabbed a legimite mail entry as "junk".
It has to be a simple thing to do,but I've been stymied for three days,so far.
Please help.
FrankWe'll need to know what e-mail client you're using before we could give you the steps to correct this.SORRY,but I'm unsure just what a "client" is.
I have AOL and the problem is in
"IM" instant messenger.
FrankYour basic problem is with email, right? So, what does AOL's IM have to do with this?A "client" would be the name of the program you're using to send and receive e-mail. For example, you could be using Microsoft Outlook or you could be on a browser window to send and receive e-mail through an online service such as Hotmail. Because you're using AOL I'd assume you're using the default e-mail client. Is this correct?Hello
This problem has nothing to do with email.
My AOL offers three types of communication:
"Mail","email" and "IM"(instant messanger).
My problem is with"IM"
FrankYou're providing conflicting information here.

And now you're saying it a IM problem. You don't receive mail via an IM client.Deerpark
Our problem is about semantics.
My problem has always been with "messages";that is the title of the post.
My only MENTION of "mail"was that I inadvertantly labeled an entry there, trying to eliminate the irritating "message"in IM(instant messenger).
My only mention of"email"was that it also was not involved.
FrankFrankie, sorry we were confused. Are you using AIM as your IM?

If it is AIM. To manage who's blocked in AIM or unblock in AIM follow the below steps.

1. In AIM click Edit.
2. Click Settings.
3. Click Privacy.
4. Within Privacy you'll be able to adjust all users who are blocked.

Also if that doesn't help check this link out:

Try this link

Hello
Thanks for your help
I accessed the IM privacy place, and CHANGED my file to "only my buddy list"
That should solve the problem.
FrankKeep in mind also that IM is the newest most popular venue for SPREADING baddies on the web these days so button it down as best you can and practice safe surfing.
By no means open any attachments unless from a trusted source.

Solve : A few problems...?

Answer»

Ok, first, I have a FOLDER on my desktop that I KEEP a LOT of stuff in, like 3.33GBs of stuff in. Well, everything was going good until a day or two ago, I was going to open a picture in windows picture and fax viewer (the default picture viewer) and it takes FOREVER for it to load the picture! but if i put that picture just straight on my desktop, it loads quickly. And also, my computer's fan has been acting weird lately, it's really loud now and it'll go crazy when I just use the scroll wheel on my mouse. What can I do to fix these things? Is thumbnail View turned on in Explorer? ?
If so turn it off.
As to the fan issue you will need to replace it most likely.
Remove a side panel to determine which one it is.
Carefully remove it and bring it with you to a Computer store in your area to match it up with a replacement.

As always when working inside the case make sure all power is removed and take anti-static precautions.I don't have the thumbnail view on, and it doesn't do that in any of the subfolders in that folder. And thanks for the info on the fan.Well there's a reason it's logging the ENTIRE directory instead of only the file you are accessing...
Is Fast User Switching enabled ? ?
What type of backup software do you run ? ?Well there's a reason it's logging the entire directory instead of only the file you are accessing...
Is Fast User Switching enabled ? ?
What type of backup software do you run ? ?How do I check if fast user switching is enabled? and what do you mean by 'backup' software? From the Mothership:

Quote

Enable or Disable Fast User Switching
Note: To enable Fast User Switching, you must also enable the Use the Welcome screen option. This feature cannot be used if your computer is a member of a domain. To enable Fast User Switching:
1.Log on to the computer as an administrator.
2.Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click User Accounts.
3.Click Change the way users log on or off.
4.If it is not already selected, click to SELECT the Use the Welcome screen check box.

NOTE: The Use Fast User Switching check box is unavailable until you click to select the Use the Welcome screen check box.
5.Click to select the Use Fast User Switching check box, and then click Apply Options. Quit the User Accounts tool.

If you don't know about backup software chances are you have none...i highly recommend Acronis True Image.Yeah I have fast user switching, and what does the backup software do exactly?Turn it off and see if access times improve...
There are many types of backup software. I use and recommend Acronis True Image...basically it takes a snapshot of your entire system known as an image.
When things go South as they are known to do you simply restore the image and your system is back to the point when the last image was created...
Beats the heck out of a re-install of Windows and all your programs and data...
