Solve : Windows Vistas XP - Quad Core?

Answer»

I was thinking of getting a Q6700 cpu
I heard that Windows XP does not use all 4 cores and I WOULD have to get Vistas to get the most out of my cpu is that true?In short, Windows XP and Vista does use all the cores. It's the software, not the OS, that will take advantage of the extra cores (unless you have an older OS that can't use more than one core).
Wherever you heard that XP can't use all the cores is lying, simple as that.
Also, I would recommend the Q6600 rather than the Q6700, the latter tends to be a lot more expensive for only a little extra performance.I have the 6600 (had it for almost a year), and consider it to be an excellent machine. I believe most people would be very happy with Vista, and with the 6600, so long as you MAKE sure to get at least 3 gb ram. I agree with an earlier post - to BUY the 6700 INVOLVES a good bit more money for a SOMEWHAT marginal performance increase.Quote

Solve : Windows XP doesn't run 16 bit apps?

Answer»

I have Windows XP SP2 and run it mainly as a limited user. The reason for this is security. I had a major virus attack recently.

I find that as a limited user I cannot run 16 bit applications like command.com, edit.com etc.
If I switch to ADMIN user it fine. EVEN if I add the limited user to the Administrators group, its fine.

Any ideas as why this might be?
Thanks
FrankWhat do you mean you can't run them? Are you getting any kind of error MESSAGES?I think the limited user can't run those utilities because it is a limited user...Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on June 12, 2008, 04:33:53 AM

I think the limited user can't run those utilities because it is a limited user...

I never run limited accounts on my system, but I thought that might be the case, so I created one and tried it. The limited account was able to access command.com, edit.com, and cmd.exe just fine. That's why I wondered if the OP had any kind of error message or such when he tried it.When I try to launch any of those apps (eg. command.com) a command prompt window opens, blank and a windows message:

"C:\WINDOWS\system32\command.com
C:\Ducume~1\Frank\Locals!~1\Temp. A temporary file needed for initialization could not be created or could not be written to. Make sure that the directory path exists, and disk SPACE is available. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application."

When I click on close or ignore the command prompt window DISAPPEARS. This is all I can get. I can create files, delete file and modify files in that temp folder with Windows Explorer as the limited user. I had that folder open in Windows Explorer while the error message comes on - no new file created.
On other machines with limited user, these apps work fine.

Solve : Another Outlook Question?

Answer»

We use Microsoft Outlook 2007 for our business email. We are networked and the problem is as FOLLOWS:
The new office computer we just installed (Dell Inspiron 530, Windows XP) with Oulook installed runs into the following problem. When we open Outlook to view EMAILS sent everything loads up properly however if we open Outlook on any of our other computers the same email account does not show the emails opened in our new office computer. It seems all the computers have the proper settings, am I missing something from the office computer that MAKES the other computers not able to receive those emails opened in the office computer?

Peter Are all these computers supposed to be using Outlook on an Exchange server? Or, do you just use POP mail, or IMAP mail? Who set up Outlook for email on the other computers? What VERSION of Outlook in on the other computers? Have you compared email settings in the other computers to settings in the new computer? I resoved the issue. the new office computer did not have the following CHECKED off on the advanced tab in the account settings:
Leave copy of the messages on the server.

Now all the computers on our network can receive the same messages.

Solve : operating system problem (can anyone help?)?

Answer»

Ok! I am runing Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005

I had a problem with my pc and i thought if i loaded window again it may fix the problem, but the only thing this done was gave me two operating system on the one computer. so when i boot up the computer i get the OPTION of what operating system i want! I didn't want two operating systems on my computer, so i deleted the widows that i had just installed. The only thing was after deleted it, when i booted up the computer again i was STILL being asked for the choice of what operating system i want to boot! I was told by someone that i needed to find what drive the second windows was loaded on and format the drive! Done this and still on boot up, am being asked for the choice of operating system to load!

On the choice of operating system screen, if i select the original windows it boots up perfect and runs without a problem. Now if i select the operating system that i had just deleted i get an error message and the computer re-boots back to the choice of operating systems srceen!

My original windows is on drive C and the windows i re-installed for some reason got insatlled on my E drive(which is the one i deleted)!

Can ANYONE help me in telling me how to fix this problem, so that the computer boots up normally with the original windows and no choice of operating srceen??Getting rid of the boot menu is simple. Start-> Control Panel -> (Switch to Classic View if you aren't already) System -> Advanced -> Startup and Recover Options -> Click Edit under System Startup. Copy the contents and paste them in a post. I'll tell you what to REMOVE. Although it's not related to your problem of booting, could you please explain what problem you had with your computer to cause you to reinstall the OS?haha dual boot have you tried formatting the hdd that your second os is installed on?programming_pat - formating the second drive won't alter the boot menu which resides on the first drive. The boot menu will still display the option to choose the OS, even if it no longer exists.

Here is info that rabmcfadden PMed me.

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Media Center Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

I told him to remove an instance of the repeated "multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Media Center Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect". That should eliminate the prompt to choose an OS.

Solve : Partition XP without reformat ??

I am running XP Media Center

One NTFS Harddrive, 2 PARTITIONS. 280 GB total, 122 GB FREE space on DRIVE C

Can I create a new Partition without reformatting ?Welcome to the CH forums.

There are several THIRD party partitioning tools which claim to be able to do this, I understand Partition Magic 8 is one of them. If you decide to do this PLEASE backup prior to starting the partitioning tool.

Solve : Photo organizing program?

Answer»

When I bought my digital camera, I did not understand how to place a file name with each PICTURE, so each group of pictures had the same file names dictated by my camera. Now I have a mess. Is there a program that will help sort out the pictures so that I can see the duplicates and DELETE extras using size as well as image? I thought I heard of ONE but cant find it.

I MAY have twenty to FIFTY pictures with each file name. I started by going one to one and deleted the extras but hopefully there is a quicker method.

Thanksi dont think there is... what operating system? Here's an idea!

Do a Windows Search for the folder with the pictures only. When the search is complete, sort them by size and delete the pictures with the same sizes. (after you review them)

Woah, look at that large fragmented space. All the red you see in the diagram is all one file. Backup00.bkf.

For the disk to defragment, it must have enough swap space to move that file together.

By any chance do you know what defragmentation does? (specifically)

Solve : I Dont know how I did it?

Answer»

I was installing win xp pro on an older HP Pavilion xe743, 667mhz celeron, 20gbHD, nothing special, origanilly had win98. i also have another similar pavilion system, close to the same specs.
no on to what I did, I fully installed xp pro on the one, the other I had to replace the hard drive, after doing so it would not load from the cd rom. so I tried the first system hard drive (the one that loaded sucessfully) and switched it to the one I was working on. Well i used the working system and tried loading xp pro on the other hard drive. now I have one computer, and a 2 hard drive boot system, did I forget to mention one hard drive is fat32 the other is ntfs, Both are needed for the computer to boot,or it will not boot. does ANYONE know how or what I did?Are we talking about one or two computers with problems?Quote from: hobbiest24 on June 14, 2008, 07:29:54 PM

the other I had to replace the hard drive, after doing so it would not load from the cd rom.

Was this a new or a used hard drive that wouldnt work?
Have you checked your jumper SETTINGS?I was fixing 2 hp pavilions. the first 40gb one already had xp pro but so many viruses it wouldnt let me reinstall the os, the second one 20gb had win 98. the one with win 98 i sucessfylly UPGRADED. i took the hard drive from the other (loaded with viruses) and tried loading a freash xp pro on it while it was hooked up on the secondary ide. I have noticed that both drives are set to master on the jumper settings.
They are attached 20gb fat32 pri ide, 40 gb NTFS second ide,
Under disk management the 20gb says its system, the 40 gb is labled boot
both are considered PRIMARY drives. So you want to install the 40 gig in one machine and the 20 gig in the other one? Is that right?

When you first tried to install Xp on the 40 Gb drive was it the only hard drive that you had in the machine?

Did you boot to the windows disk or insert it after the old O.S. had already loaded?Yes I wanted the 40 in the slightly better machine, and the 20 in the other.

when the 40 was in the original comp it wouldnt let me boot from the cd rom, even with changing the boot in bios.

I think I have them set in some sort of raid format. with it all together it runs super fast for only 667mhz celeron, and only 128 sd ram. That is odd. If you changed your boot order in BIOS and saved changes when you exited your hard drive should have been bypassed and not had anything to do with your boot to the CD.

Did you hear the disk spinning in the drive? If your machine has two CD drives did you put the disk in the master drive?I think the bios may have been damaged by one of the virusesHave you tried flashing your BIOS?no not yet, im still fasinated with how i have the 2 hdd both booting the 1 system, and surprised at how fast it runs. still dont know how its running the way it is.Well if it aint broke dont fix it. If you dont need both of thos computers running then I wouldnt worry about it. Also, you have another one now for spare parts Its only 667mhz with 128 pc100 sdram, and it runs as fast as my amd 4300x2 with 512mb ddr2,
figure that one out?Quote from: hobbiest24 on June 14, 2008, 08:50:40 PM

Maybe you won't see much of a difference with just opening and shutting windows, drawing screen furniture, etc, but I am absolutely sure that if you compare some CPU/memory intensive tasks you will see a difference.

For example Prime95.

Solve : Unable to Obtain Full Administrator Rights on XP Home PC?

Answer»

Recently, I was asked to try to correct a problem with a five year old Dell XP Home machine. The machine has had only two user accounts set up during the entire 5 years of its lifetime. Both those accounts had administrator privileges. I used Belarc Advisor to get an inventory of the machine, and its report indicated the "Administrator" account had never been used. There are a number of run of the mill functions which no user can perform, including setting wallpaper, activating the screen saver, opening certain, but not all, programs, and the list goes on. I set up a new user account, again with administrator rights, and ran into the same problem using that account. In most cases, the problem exhibits in this manner: Go to folder options, click on the button to display hidden files and folders, click apply, and click okay. It appears that this action has been carried out as desired. However, immediately go back to the same process, and the option to display hidden files has reverted back to NO display of hidden files. This same problem exists with respect to many different activities, including inability of one account user to see programs installed by another user, even though both users are identified as having administrator privileges. This very unique problem (in my experience at least) has me stumped. Any ideas out there?Just for kicks and giggles...

Has this computer ever been updated VIA Windows/Microsoft Update? It was up to date until SP3 began to be pushed out a week or so ago - that's when I checked the machine. It's pretty much current. As an afterthought - I should mention this: the only two users (ever) of this machine are a retired couple. The husband never touches the computer; the wife only does internet shopping and email - she is not the type to have ever even been aware of such a thing as a computer administrator, let alone tried to tinker with anything the least bit arcane (to her).Possible malware infection?

Pretty much has me stumped, as well.Quote

Post HijackTHis log.For Broni & Saviour: Thanks for your replies/suggestions. After much research and pulling of hair, I looked at the update history on the offending machine, and found a number of auto update failures. Long story short, SP3 failed to install properly, and I managed to get a Microsoft engineer on the phone. He told me that SP3 is the first update in which the update site completely takes control of the machine being updated, and there have been some problems involving failure to relinquish control of the machine after the update process has finished (or been interrupted, or failed).

A couple of days ago, one of the posters to this forum asked about problems with SP3, and I sent a post that I had updated several machines to SP3 with no problems. Well, that answer appears to REQUIRE a little qualification. The engineer finally advised that the machine should be wiped, and a clean install performed. I've done that, and I'm up to SP2 on windows updates. If I get the same problem with SP3, I'll file another post.Thank you for posting back I would have replied sooner - but had to go out of town briefly. I do plan to look into the HiJack This thingie, and I appreciate your making the suggestion. However, thus far, it appears (not sure yet) that Microsoft's installation of Sp3 and at least one other malfunctioning update may have been the problem.Well - I'm happy to report that, after a clean install of XP, I was able to regain control of the subject computer. In fact, I'm sending this post from that computer, which has now been fully updated thru SP3. Thanks again to all who offered advice, help, suggestions, ETC.We're just glad you have it under control...

Sorry to hear you had to do a clean install, though. Did you lose anything?Well - of course, you lose everything you didn't back up in a clean install. Before the operation, I grabbed all the data, photos, etc., which was of significance to the owner. She had all the installation disks for the 5 or 6 applications of interest to her, and I exported email accounts, email folders, a copy of the registry (for possible reference purposes), IE favorites, etc., to a backup CD. Dealing with a clean install is painful, but I was convinced it was the best thing to do under the circumstances. More importantly, I suppose, Microsoft's rep was willing to try to help repair the thing, but he was not optimistic that a repair effort would be successful. Look out all you not yet owners of SP3 - it might happen again.

This exercise REALLY PROMPTS you to seriously consider hooking up an extra hard drive for the purpose of keeping disk images available for such disasters as this one.You know what I meant...

I tell everyone I know to back up on a daily basis...but do they listen? Noooooo.

Anyway...I have had SP3 installed for some time now. I haven't experienced one glitch...not one.

That's surprising for a Windows-based PC.

Solve : Problems with starting Windows XP Home Edition?

Answer»

Last night, I was uploading CD’s to my iTunes and I was about to attach a USB cable to the computer when it froze. The music which was playing froze on spot and would play the same note in a pulsating manner; I was unable to move the mouse pointer and the would not respond…thus, I was forced with no choice but to do a hard shut-down (which I don’t like to do).

I left the computer off for five minutes before turning it back on. The computer appeared to be coming on normally:

•The E-machines logo came on (normal when turning on)
•Next screen was normal too (can’t describe it)

The next screen was one I’d seen before but this was when I realised there was something wrong. There were five options but only three I remember off my HEAD:

•Start in Safe Mode
•Start using most recent settings
•Start Windows Normally

First, I select “Start Windows Normally” and this is what happened

•The Windows logo came one with a status bar underneath showing it is process/loading up (normal)
•At one point I see the bars going across the status bar pause once or twice
•Windows logo disappears and a blank black screen appears
•Nothing happens after this and I shut down the computer

After 10 minutes I turn the computer on again following the same steps above but this time I select “Start in Safe Mode”

•A screen with DOS prompts and what either looks like commands or file names appear in a long list show up on the screen
•Nothing happens after this
•Turn computer off after 10 minutes

Waited 10 minutes and turn the computer on again and then I select “Start Windows using most recent settings”

•Same thing happens as above when having selected “Start Windows Normally”
•After ten minutes shut computer down

Left the computer off all night and turned it on this morning and followed the same process with selecting “Start Windows Normally” – same results as the night above.

If you have any step-by-step advice/options on how to remedy this, it would be most appreciative.

Best,
DarrinDo you have the Windows Disc handy? You might need it.

Are you sure you waited 10 minutes? The list of code is normal and it sometimes 'freezes' for quite a while before entering Safe Mode. Thanks for responding quickly.

Yes, I waited 10 minutes because I used a timer to ensure, and no, I don't have the Windows disc as it is at home and I at work.

Since writing this, I found out my partner was able to get Windows started again but has indicated we may have lost some drivers (he's a little more techy than I am obviously). Thus, we should be able to start the computer this evening at which time we will back everything onto our external hard drive.

My partner plans to do a reformatting of the hard drive on the WEEKEND which will be a lenghty process as he will do this on a regular basis to ensure the longevity of the HD.

Admittedly, our CPU is old (over 4 YEARS) and is probably DUE for a replacement. If we need to replace it, I hope we can find a CPU which is not VISTA based as we have a number of hardware/software items which will not be compatible with that operating system.

Best,
DarrinThere are no processors that are just "Vista based". You'll probably have trouble finding a processor that will fix your motherboard if it is 4 years old. Most of them now are 775, and probably won't fit in your older motherboard.

Your first job is to backup your files, I suggest you slave/install your hdd in another PC and backup the files which you should have backed up if they are important to you... The importance of backup cannot be overstressed.

Forget trying to repair your operating system until your backup is secure, repairing the operating system can be done later.

Good luck.

Solve : window media player reinstal/down failure....?

Answer»

Acutally, do any installation files work? I have a FEELING it's not just Windows media Player...I surely do not have problem with installing some other software on my PC.

Typically, when u want to install a different wmp player software on your PC,all you have to do is to unstall or remove the previous one you had on your system from the control panel(remove/add hardware).that would should roll you back to the previous version that you had on your computer.I've already done that but It didn't work(I mean it wont roll back)

a friend of mine suggested that it could be from my operating system, that the wmp on it might have been corrupted.. so i'm still unsure of all the SUGGESTIONS since its more of speculation than proven.I found this.

To further confuse this issue, i removed the wusb11 from the computer i am on, typing this post (works), and when i use on my computer, i get the same issue on my laptop that i have with my internal card.
Rebooted 2wire
Reset 2wire
Called all of my wonderful ex coworkers and business associates, they can not get their head around this EITHER. For all intents and purposes my card works great away from my network, just not "in" my network.
Anyone?forgot to add,
i see the network,
connect with limited or no connectivity, PACKETS out, none in
originally thought a dhcp issue, did a winsock fix, but still same issue.
The wireless card was on when i started reformat, could that be an issue?
I did not think to disable etc when i did it.
Have you checked the router? If every things okay on other networks I doubt it's your computer. One thing to check is that both the router and the network card are on the same channel. Also may WANT to double check your other security settings. WRONG settings and no matter how good the SIGNAL you won't be able to connect.i am quite sure it is something that has happened here, the wusb11 from this computer is fine on the network, on mine nope. i just cant get my head around what i have done, and have never done anything like this before, so i am at a loss.
Windows Firewall off, nortons not even installed, havent downloaded AVG yet although i have never had it do anything, at a loss but thank you for your input, you are right, some setting somewhere.
*side note*
dhcp enabled, and a check mark in automatically detect settings.

I know longer have the 2000 startup disk. I have nt & xp pro. I tried using those both but, it keeps going back to the same msg (see above). Ive tried last known config, safemode etc... Is there a WAY I can bypass this or how can I get rid of op system thru dos w/o the disc or erd. Since microsoft doesnt have support for this (Ive gone on the microsoft page) for this. any help u can give me I would APPRECIATE. I am typing this from my blkbry.

Thanx System32 is a folder. Are you sure that you provided the entire error message? here is the enire message.

The top it says starting windows below it is the loading bar

"Windows 2000 could not start because the following file is missiong or corrupt:

WINNT/SYSTEM32/CONFIG/SYSTEMced startup options for windows 2000, press f8. You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows 200
setup using the original setup floppy disk or CD-rom.
Select 'r' at the first screen to start. repair".

That is the entire msg. I dont have the set-up floppy or cd-rom. I have the nt disk & xp. You could try DLoading the 5 floppy set of Win2K from bootdisk.com and run the Recovery Console but i suspect you are going to need to locate a Win2K CD that says Microsoft all over it to repair this problem...Yeah, but getting 2 a diff pc is more difficult. Couldnt I just wipe it clean & reinstall windows? I dont need anything that is currently on there.HI pm,

If you get the error:
Windows could not start because the following files is missing or corrupt
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM or \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG

Insert and boot from your Windows XP CD.
At the first R=Repair option, press the R key
Press the number that corresponds to the correct location for the installation of Windows you want to repair.
Typically this will be #1
Enter in the administrator password when requested
cd \windows\system32\config
Depending on which section was corrupted:
ren software software.bad or ren system system.bad
Depending on which section was corrupted
copy \windows\repair\system
copy \windows\repair\software
Take out the CD ROM and type exit
naresh.techie: The user stated in the first post that the system has Windows 2000. thanx. I have tried doing that but it keeps loading & going back 2 tha same error. The pc is reading the cd, but never GIVES me an option 2 repair the error or install a new os. do u know y? What options are you given? You really have options....

get a copy of W2K CD and use it to repair your system or....

Wipe it clean and do a full reload of the system with a new operating system.

Post the specs of your machine and we can tell you what it would be able to run...

Thanx 4 d reply. How do I wipe it clean if I cant even get into dos 2 remove everything? It will not let me load anything @ all or even give me options 2 do anything.Windows XP will give you the option to format the hard drive during installation.

Solve : kernel_inpage_data_error?

Answer»

So I was online and my computer froze and this MESSAGE came up saying there was a kernel_inpage_data_error. I had to restart my computer and it booted up fine but Im worried it will happen again any advice on what I should do?Without any additional information...it'll be hard to tell. NORMALLY, if you get a BSOD...you'll get some additional information as to why the ERROR took place. This will be a little difficult to do since you didn't provide us with any additional information that appeared on the screen when you got the BSOD.

If it goes by too quickly, you may need to disable the restrt on error...so you can jot down the STOP Error code.

Doing a quick Google search...I found probable CAUSES from anywhere to memory or a particular BIOS setting.

You may want to take a look at this KB Article from Microsoft: KB 913379

Solve : installing XP help?

Answer» HEY all,

I'm trying to install XP on an OLD laptop. I'm using the SAMSUNG recovery cd that came with it. (I've had to copy the cd to a dvd as the cd/dvd drive won't read cd's.)

When I boot to dvd I GET a DOS A: prompt. (This seems odd as the machine has no floppy drive...) I've used fdisk and removed the partition and re-created it making it bootable.

I then tried to format it (A:\format C: /s) but I get a "Invalid drive, or format not supported"

I've managed to copy the i386 folder to the c:\ and when I try to run "winnt /s: d:\i386" I get "Could not find a place for a swap file" and I have to exit the xp install.

Does anyone know why I'm unable to format the only drive in this laptop??

Has anyone seen this XP install error before??

I've done the Google thing and the only answers that came up where "format the c:\ again" which isn't very helpful.

Cheers in advance for your help... (If you can!!)
The reason you are getting this error is because the machine is trying to use the boot device for the swap file and it needs to be writeable which it is not.

You need to build a boot disk that can use part of the hard drive in your system to WRITE temp file too.

Why doesn't the CD/DVD drive read CDs? Have you tried to boot another machine with your Samsung recovery CD to be sure its good?

cheers for reply,

the drive is old, so I'm guessing that it has dual lazers and the one for the cd has failed. the disks working fine as I've copied the data on to a dvd.

As for your explation for why I get this error, it sounds good.

How would I go about creating a boot disk that can use the hhd, without a floppy drive??

Cheers again.

Don't know if this will help - but I know that certain Recovery Boot CDs, such as Hiren's, construct a "RAM Drive" (virtual drive in memory) to write to, just in case the C: Drive is not available for some reason. Of course, the more RAM you have, the better for that purpose.

Solve : java update problem?

Oh yeah,

I am running firefox, version 2.0.0.14 and my current java is JRE 1.6.3

Don't know if that helpsI don't see anything unusual...Better late than never...but I also feel a clean install would definitely fix the issue.

While it is a little time consuming...it would definitely fix the problem. If you can back up everything you want to save...and either get the recovery software...or an operating system CD...do a fresh install.

To be perfectly honest...this is the FIRST time I've ever run across a situation where the latest version of Java couldn't be installed...unless the DOWNLOAD was CORRUPT...the operating system was corrupt...permission settings...or malware related.

Don't worry, though...I'll be attending the services. as well.

Solve : problem with diagonal stripe on moniter after reboot from hibernate?

Answer»

It stops at exactly that point. being the point of startup. Goes DIRECTLY to stand by or no signal input. What is "that point"?It doesnt go anywhere. It starts. sounds good, all fans running, dvd player EVEN lights up like normal. And on the screen it says no input signal, then immediately goes to standby. It doesnt boot. It doesnt go to bios.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I thru a new video card in and it seems to have solved the problem. I'm sorry if I wasn't CLEARER with my info. I'm new at this. I do have one more question. Why would, in your opinion, a video card go out like that. It was fine when i went into hibernate. I loved the graphics on my computer!! I never had any problems at all with graphics. It seems that after Windows
made an error, and it was windows that made the error, my whole system seemed to go right down the toilet, taking my video card with it. I'm just bummed because i couldn't afford a new nvidia graphics card just yet so I had to settle for less. Thanks again for your help. I think the fact that it happened after hibernation was a coincidence. Video cards GET overheated. Semiconductor chips don't like to get too hot. They are famous for that. Maybe you live in a warm place and/or your computer's cooling is not efficient enough.
If this HAPPENS with video card removed, Dias must be right.Cool, THANKYOU!!!!! *computer is back* Now I can get some
sleep. What did you do?

Solve : winXP computer doesnt boot up.?

Answer»

It was okay this morning andit was working fine although very slow. I installed an antivirus on the computer (avira) and then shut it down to restart it. It doesnt BOOT up now, all I get when the computer starts is the initial windows XP splash screen with the logo and then it goes away and I have a black screen with a blinking cursor in the TOP left. And when I shut it down again and restarted it after that, I went through the splash screen and then some windows writing showed up followed by the words "keyboard FAILURE". I DISCONNECTED the keyboard and it still SAYS "Keyboard failure" when I restart. Weird.

I cant even get to safe mode by pressing f8. What doI do
Is it possible that this system may have been experiencing a hardware failure that caused the performance loss and now it has reached its critical point of serious failure.

Is this keyboard a standard PS2 type or USB, and what was the nature of this system leading up to this point? How old is this computermake/model and how much ram, and did you make any hardware changes or upgrades to it recently?

Solve : File recovery?

Answer»

I RECENTLY got a new hard drive after I got a virus so I decided to just install windows on my new hard drive and use my old one as an external storage medium. The old one still had windows installed, but whenever I tried booting off of it my computer went into an endless loop of "press f5 to ENTER recovery mode" so I did and reinstalled WINDOW's system files. I restarted thinking it would work but it kept looping the same text. So I went into recovery mode again, but this time I chose the "make backup and reinstall windows option". Now I have a new windows installed and a folder that says "Backup 11-12-08" (or something like that) with everything that was there before I reinstalled windows. Now it still won't boot and the same loop keeps coming up, but this isn't even the problem.
I can't access any of my files! When I'm running windows from my new drive and I have my old one connected from a hard drive enclosure I can't navigate past my user folder (ex. D:\Backup11-12-08\Documents and Settings\Me\). I can only do so when I boot off of a linux live cd (backtrack) but I still can't delete or change the privilages. The only way I SEE how I could recover all my stuff is to copy it to another storage medium (which I can't afford)(not even dvds since I need to be booting off of a live cd to see any of the files) and format my old hard drive when I'm done. I want to be able to access my files without having to use backtrack every time so my question is:

Is there a way I can GET access to my files while I'm in windows? I've tried using a file unlocker but it didn't recognize the folder as locked]How to Take Ownership of Files in XP

Solve : Thumbs.db?

Answer»

Ok - probably no answer to this but thought I'd ASK - and sorry if has been done before.

Copying load of files or folders to external for backup - part ways thru ...... "Are you sure you WANT to copy Thumbs.db"? ........ that darned dialog that interrupts the flow of a copy and requires intervention to continue! Arghhh! Means having to stay on hand to catch it.

Anyone know of a way to stop that pesky message? I rather doubt it but worth asking. Not even as if I view thumbs in my file listings anyways.turn Thumbs.db off for the TIME being (or for ever):

1. Open Windows Explorer.
2. Click Tools -> Folder Options -> Open the View tab.
3. Make sure that Do not cache thumbnails is checked.
4. Click the Apply to all folders button.
5. Click OK.My thanks!!!

How darned SIMPLE and I had totally forgotten that was in there!

Great - and welcome!

Solve : Can only connect to net in Safe mode?

Answer»

It seems as though something happened overnight and now I can only connect to the internet in Safe Mode.

Things I've tried:
-Using three different browsers
-Ditching the router and going direct connect
-System Restore
-Disabling, repairing, enabling connection

When I start in normal mode, I can connect to the internet for just a moment if I open my browser as soon as it boots up but as soon as everything loads up it WONT connect at all. It shows me as being connected to my network just fine, but wont load any pages.

Please help me out and let me know what you need from me. I'm running XP and have HIJACKTHIS if you need to see a log from that. I did INSTALL a new print a couple weeks ago (HP Photosmart) in case that could mess up anything. Thanks. When exactly did this problem start?
You can connect fine with Safe Mode? (Safe Mode With Networking I presume)

What Operating System is this?

Go ahead and post he HijackThis Log.I just figured it out... it was my Trend Micro Internet Security. Its worked fine until now but I started in normal boot and tried disabling the anti virus, firewall and everything else trend has and it still DIDNT work until I completely closed down the entire program. Then I could connect in regular mode. So now trend is uninstalled and I'm running avast everything is fine. Ever heard of anything like this before?

Solve : \system32\ntoskrnl.exe HELP?

Answer»

All of a sudden i get this message when i turn on computer

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt
<windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
Please re-install a copy of the above file

The day before the computer was working properly
I insert the Windows XP disk and when the options come up
I want to type R so i can go to Recovery mode but
i can't choose any of the options the KEYBOARD is not responding.
I've tried 3 different boards,no help at all.
1 was a USB other 2 were the normal boards.
The boards all work on other computers
Once the wait is over to automaticly choose a boot option, it says
\system32\ntoskrnl.exe is missing or corrupt.
How do i fix this?
Please help me its my friends computer and they dont want to loose
their photos that are on their hardrive
First, try system restore if you have been periodically saving good installs.
Usually, you an boot to your windows CD, and run Windows XP in repair mode... but this could be malware as well.
The computer BELIEVED that this file is corrupt: C:\WINNT\System32\Ntoskrnl.exe
This is often caused by a bad hard drive that is beginning to fail. On some computers it is caused by a defective keyboard. But it can come from any set of corrupted files. Some times it is the boot.ini file

But the problem can be more complicated if your computer came with a Recovery or Restore disc instead of a Windows XP install disc. If that is the case, you are better off REFORMATTING and reinstalling Windows after you save the data... for which you will require a separate disc.
Using a regular Windows XP dis, you boot to the disc, then press the R for repair to enter the repair or recovery console.
Select the operating system, then enter your admin password.
Type: Expand d:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_ C:\Windows\System32.
You should get a prompt asking you if you want to Overwrite the File.
You should enter Y for yes, the press to Overwrite.
If that works, you are probably home free.
To know for sure, shut down the computer, then run a cold boot with the button.
If it starts, correctly, then you are done. Spero-T thanks for the info but i cant use the keyboard to enter the R to go to recovery mode i have tried three keyboards on their computer.
Then tested them on mine and they work.
I even tried to connect the keyboard via usb and they still dont work.
So i cant perform any tasks with the keyboard.
I don't know what to do.
Hope you can help me. Have you tried both ps2 and usb keyboards in the machine ? Yes i have
Thats why its stressing me out, i cant boot from the Windows XP disk because i cant type I am really not sure the only thing i could think of -

Perhaps if you removed the hard drive and put it in a different computer and tried the above adivice....What if i put a new hardrive in their computer and made the old one with the problem the SLAVE and made the new one the master would that work.
Would i be able to at least retrieve important files and pictures that wayHey just try this.

Solve : retrieving data after formatting?

i'm using WINDOWS xp home edition (i'll provide whatever additional info needed... if any)

well, the computer got real funky with viruses and removal programs won't really work so I decided to format it.

the way I formatted was to use the system recovery disk provided by Sony VAIO along with the computer

my hard drive is partitioned into C Drive, in which all the program and application data are stored (obviously), and D Drive, in which all the musics and games and stuff are stored

well, i kinda formatted both DRIVES, but as it turns out, i forgot to save some of my musics (actually, pretty much all of them...) into a back up hard drive

I formatted total of three times because there were some problems remaining after the FIRST two.... of course, I never knew I forgot to save them before I formatted...

my question is, is there ANY way to retrieve those lost files? I THINK I heard somewhere that this kind of system recovery doesn't clear the hard drive entirely...

any help or advice would be appreciatedWell...you're partially correct...

Data can be retrieved on a formatted hard drive...depending on who does it for you...those that specialize in data recovery, usually...and the condition of the hard drive...

However, you've stated you've reinstalled and formatted a total of three times...

If the data was there...you probably overwrote it...and basically may not be able to retrieve it...at all.If you take it to a computer expert they may be able to recover it for you....

Saviour i have a question for you

This program do you think it really works This program download is free it will let you know if you can recover any
files.

why you formated and started over.Quote from: Spero-T on October 04, 2007, 04:43:03 AM

I'm familiar with this program...and the vendor...however, due to the number of times this person has formatted and re-installed...it may be a waste of time.

Oh, btw...it's trialware...and you are limited to what you can do with it until you purchase a product license...just a HEADS up...With these recovery programs usually they must be installed prior to reformatting as opposed to after-the-fact.

Alan <>< LOL...that's absolutely correct...we got a little off topic there...those programs are, indeed, used for installing on a current working computer.

The OP wanted to know...if files were retrievable after formatting...and they can be...if they can find a reliable and reputable company specializing in data recovery.

However...like I said...they've already formatted several times...now there may still be data on the drive...whether or not it's recoverable...now, that's the question. I highly doubt it, though.IF YOU HAVE FORMATTED YOUR HARD DRIVE USING QUICK FORMAT OPTION THEN USE MAGIC RECOVERY SOFTWARE TO RECOVER DATA. IT IS POSSIBILITY TO GET DATA BACK USING THIS.Your caps lock key is stuck...and by the way...they've reformatted and installed probably more than three times...so I doubt any data is retrievable..at all.

Solve : Error Loading Operating System?

Answer»

I have a Gateway DESKTOP that was getting the message "Error loading operating system". The owner of the PC said they were getting a lot of popups that sounded like viruses to me.

I ran chkdsk, fixboot, and fixmbr. Then I got the message "NTLDR is missing". I was able to restore the NTLDR file but not the ntdetect.com. It said it's unable to copy the file.

When I run chkdsk /p it says "The volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems."

So I try to do a repair install and the option isn't LISTED. This is an XP home system but it's saying the file system is FAT. It says 76317 MB USED and 9 MB free.

I tried connecting the drive to my computer and no usable files are listed. The names of the files look like chinese.

I hope this hard drive isn't GONE, because they have some files they NEED off there. She is a teacher and has her grades stored on it, but of course they're not backed up anywhere. It looks like you need to reformat, and reinstall OS.This may be worth a shot

Solve : folder backup problem?

Answer»

hello everybody,

my problem is that i try to back up a folder into a flash drive from my computer and set a schedule for daily backup but the computer would ask me to provide a password which if i just click ok, it will accept it by telling me that I HAVE AGREED TO USE A BLANK PASSWORD but if i check the schedule task, it will tell me at thtimeitought to backup that THE BACKUP DID NOT WORK BECAUSE I DIDNT SUPPLY A PASSWORD.

also if i later SETUP a backup later and put a password during the advance setup, the message i ALWAYS receive is as follow

AN ERROR HAS OCCURED WHILE ATTEMPTING TO SET TASK ACCOUNT INFORMATION. THE SPECIFIC ERROR IS 0x800070005: ACCESS IS DENIED.

YOU DO NOT HAVE PERMISSION TO PERFORM THE REQUESTED OPERATION.

Please help me on what to do to solve this problem as the folder is very very essential to me.Does SYSTEM have at least write permission on the data you are backing up?
Check the permissions, and add the SYSTEM if needed.
My system is the adminstrator, so i dont see why i password will be required before i can backup a folder.

Suprisingly, i created a folder on a different system entirely, set a schedule backup and i STILL receive the same kind of response from the computer.

I want the system to always automatically backup the folder for me instead of I manually backking up the folder.

Please I need a help.First find the Task in the Task Scheduler window...
Right click it and select Properties...
At the bottom where it says Run As type in nt authority\system...
This will ask for a password don't enter one just click on OK and Yes on the No Password warning...

If this does not work delete the task and do the procedure over from start.Hello Patio,

I have already done what you ask me to do. but it is still the same. but a friend of mine did some certain thing on his system yesterday when he was trying to help me to solve the problem.

what he simply did was to go to
CONTROL PANEL-
ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS-
COMPUTER MANAGEMENT-
LOCAL USER AND GROUP-
DOUBLE CLICK USER-
SELECT ADMINISTRATOR-
CLICK ON ACTION FROM THE MENU BAR-
CLICK ON SET PASSWORD-
CLICK ON PROCED AND ENTER A PASSWORD, THEN CONFIRM THE PASSWORD.

then restart the system, you will be prompt to enter a password for the adminstrator when window is loading.

then he set the backup schedule and it works.

you can let others have a feel of this.

thanks Lateef.
Glad to hear that method worked for you and thanx for posting a solution...
Not sure why the other one didn't though.

Solve : Is Windows XP supports DOS??

Answer»

Just came up into my mind about this Windows XP setup. When you install Windows XP, this blue SCREEN woull be the environment right?

My question is if in Windows 98 installing we call as DOS environment because Windows is supports DOS. In Windows XP what should we call that?Windows XP does not have a true DOS. It's an EMULATED version of DOS (Command Prompt).
You can't run real mode DOS-programs and you can't have real mode drivers, as you could in true DOS.

I think, the last Windows version based on real DOS was Windows ME. MS stopped DEVELOP DOS around year 2000.Quote from: Broni on October 04, 2007, 11:47:45 PM

It's an emulated version of DOS (Command Prompt).

What do you mean about this "emulated DOS" sir?A bit of reading on emulation in general:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emulation

And the Virtual Dos Machine specifically: (the emulated DOS XP utilizes)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NTVDM

Quote from: SHENGTON on October 04, 2007, 07:13:45 PM
In Windows XP what should we call that?
What to call it... The Windows XP setup perhaps? emulate = imitate

Actually this emulated DOS has some advantages, compare to REGULAR DOS.
For instance in regular DOS, commands, you typed in, were limited to "8+3" FORMULA (8 letter file name + 3 letter extension). Emulated DOS (Command Prompt) doesn't have this limitation.
That is a filename limitation...not a command line limitation.Quote
That is a filename limitation...not a command line limitation.
Let me rephrase...

Let say you have a folder C:\Program Files

In DOS based Windows, while in DOS window, you can't execute command:
cd C:\Program Files
You have to type:
cd C:\Progra~1

With Command Prompt in post-DOS Windows, you can execute:
cd C:\Program Files

This is what I meant.
Surely, in real DOS, you can't have a file name, going beyond "8+3" rule.

Solve : full screen games freeze?

Answer»

ok, I tried closing all applications and all unneeded processes through task manager before running the game with no luck. thanks for the suggestion though.
I didn't time it but it seemed to run for the exact same time before freezing. I don't understand how they could work perfectly for the first few minutes and just completely freeze out of nowhere.

Thanks for your advice guys

I "inherited" this computer from my brother when he went off to college two years ago and I don't think I tried to play any full screen games on it until the past year. However I know my brother played games like that on it so it MUST've been something I did after I started using it.
I've always had virus protection.
Under device manager/sound video game controllers/ I have listed AUDIO Codecs, Legacy Audio drivers, Legacy video capture devices, Media Control Devices, MPU-401 Compatible MIDI Device, SiS 7012 Audio Driver, Standard Game Port, and Video Codecs. under display adapter it says SiS 315.
I rightclicked each of them and clicked update driver but each one said "the wizard could find no better match for your hardware..."

Try typing the name of your graphics card into google, i am pritty sure you can download the latest drivers there I actually updated the SiS 315 and SiS 7012 Audio Driver yesterday by searching on google and it still didn't work. And the discs are DEF not scratched?

You have tried reinstalling them?
One thing we aren't aware of is the operating system you have installed. I'm assuming it's Windows, but what version?

Also, were these games already installed on the computer or did you install them recently and have been having problems with them since you installed them?

Will wait for a reply...I have Windows XP.

I've had the discs for a few years, but they've always worked on other computers in my house.
I've cleaned the discs, uninstalled and reinstalled them many times.
I've had this computer for a COUPLE years and I can't remember a time when I ever got them to work on this computer, however before I had this computer my brother did and he was able to play games. Its been a few weeks since I got any replies. Can anybody else help me with this?Quote from: tinykitkatgrl on September 02, 2007, 09:44:47 AM

Sure, you might want to update the graphic card drivers, not the audio drivers
Moreover, you might want to provide US the problem, which should be recorded in the windows log: However, I do not remember how to access that file in XP, someone else might know though. Can you tell us the manufacturer's name and the model number of the computer? Is reinstalling Windows an option? Over time Windows tends to degrade... And I DO realize it's a pretty big task to reinstall the OS...

Solve : attempting to run any program asks what do I want to open it with??

Answer» OKAY, my two concerns are listed below, but first just a thought: I am trying to find out if there is any way possible to run System Restore without using Control Panel? If so, that may be able to fix this whole dilemma easily. well, here's my information as well....

* What operating system are you using?
Windows XP

* If you're getting an error what is the error message?
When clicking on an icon in Control Panel:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe
Application not found
When attempting to run a program:
(not an error message) but I get the screen that comes up asking me what program I want to run it with. and I dont understand it, because this started happening while my pc was still running, not when I first started it up....

* Basic details on your computer, manufacturer (Dell, HP, custom built), how much RAM, CPU (Intel/AMD), etc.
manufacturer: Compaq
RAM: I cant find out, because one of my problems is that nothing in Control Panel works when I click on it!
CPU: I really don't remember, and again I can't look to find out, but I'm almost certain that its AMD.

* When did the issue start occurring? Did you recently install a program, new hardware device, or visit a web page?
It started occurring today, after installing PC Tools anti virus: http://www.pctools.com/anti-virus/ which I found 4 viruses with, but then uninstalled to see if that fixed this problem (fortunately you dont have to rely only on Add/Remove Programs for UNINSTALLING a program!) but unfortunately, removing it didnt really help....hrmmm....ok I have had this problem before..maybe not the same as yours? I never had it ask what to open with....I figured I LOST a dll file or it was corrupt..so the application did not run...I tryed restore and it could not restore... I am not sure if you use a registery cleaner but I am sure that is where my problem started!!! I did have my program disc for my o/s system (xp Pro) and this is what I did...it will verify then ask for your disc. So if you have your o/s disc you could try this.

go to start>run and type the following command (NOTE: You must leave a space after sfc or it will not work):

sfc /scannow

Click ok and a progress bar will pop up. Let it run to completion and don't do anything else on the computer while it's running. Then reboot and see how things are running.

this should repair lost system files on your o/s and it did wonders on my system... I actually got my restore back after running this!!!
this is just a thought to try... It helped me!! would welcome any feedback from other forum members!!!
Hope it helps!!!

Start>Accessories>System Tools

the only thing stopping me from doing that is, anything I Try to open from the start menu does the same thing, it asks me what program do I want to open it with....

but RIGHT now I am trying every program possible, that is for the PURPOSE of cleaning registries, none have done anything so far.

does anyone think it might be sypware/viruses, or anything like that? Im scanning for it both right now....I used google to search for "C:\windows\system32\rundll32.exe application not found," and it seems that just about everyone was having the exact same problem as I was.

then, after scrolling down some, I found this link that seemed like it would be the right one: http://www.cybertechhelp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=129368

which resulted in me finding a reply to the users post, that contained this link: http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm

which led me to a place to download a registry file that restores default assocation for .exe files

which fixed my problem in less than a minute!

hope anyone else that ever encounters this problem finds this topic before they do anything else! You may have ".exe" association broken.
Try fix no. 12 from here: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htmWow! We just posted at the very same time, with a very same solution...LOLhaaaaaaaa we sure did! what a coincidence

everyones advice was much appreciated though!I'm happy, you're back in business!!!

Solve : Screen flashes, taskbar goes to the top, unable to click on anything...?

Answer»

Everytime I leave my computer and do not use it for a few hours, I come back to see that the taskbar which is normally on the bottom is up at the top, and the windows that are opened on the screen are flashing. When this happens CTRL ALT Delete won't work, and the mouse won't click on anything. I then have to restart my computer by holding the power button. Once rebooted it works normal, but then when i leave it again for a few hours it happens again. It's been going on for about a month or more. Anyone know what is causing this to happen? ummmmmmmmm, does anyone else use your computer besides you? there are ways to arrange the taskbar so, that it is at either SIDE of the screen, or the top, or the bottom. (click anywhere in it, and drag it to where you want it next, just like you would do with a window).

but this, is unlike anything I have ever heard before. I really dont know how to explain the windows flashing, except maybe something has happened in the window, and you had it minimized? what kind of PROGRAMS were you running, that their windows flashed?

but some advice for the FUTURE: NEVER, EVER, turn your pc off, by holding down the power button!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! this shuts down, without saving data, and is known to be a CAUSE of computers working improperly. did you start shutting down in this way, a month or more ago?How is your SCAN for viruses, spywares, and other nasties? Everything up to date? What are your power management settings ? ?

Solve : Closing Internet Explorer Window and Getting Error Message?

Answer»

I am using Internet Explorer 7.0 I believe. It's the newer one where the tabs for different internet pages are at the top of the screen. This PROBLEM just started YESTERDAY, everytime I close one of the tabs I get an error message that IE has to close and do I want to send an error report. I don't know why this is happening...any suggestions?I cant really say I have run into this error message from simply CLOSING a tab, though IE has given me a lot of them in the past from closing the whole WINDOW. which is exactly why, it is the past, and I now use Firefox: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

while it's not a solution to the issue at hand, I have found it is a much better browser by far

someone who STILL uses IE, and understands its errors and such, please help!!!!!!!! sadly, I don't have the knowledge but to recommend a better program to use. At this point in time it would be great to know what the error message is...

So, your modem is listed as: SiS 7013 Software Modem
You'll find your driver here: http://members.driverguide.com/driver/detail.php?driverid=115501&from_ums=1
You have to sign up for a free membership in order to get it.
After downloading to known location, unzip it in same folder.
Go back to Device Manager, right click on "PCI Modem" entry under "Other Devices", click "Driver" tab, and click "Update button".
Let Windows Wizard find it, or if it has some problems, point Wizard to a location where you unzipped your driver.cheers Broni 100% working
