Solve : virus xoeksmfa.dll?

Answer»

We have enough info here, which is probably even not needed, since you solved most of your problems, already...Thanks BRONI,

Let me know if there is anything else you SEE that i need to do, otherwise i thank
you for the excellent support you've provided in walking me through all this.

You're very welcome
Is there anything else not working?other than the printer, everything else seems to be working just fine.

Once he gets back on the web i'll go and COLLECT all the necessary updates
and things like that but that may be another 30-60 days depending on him.

At least i've got him to the point where he can start clean.

Again, thanks for sticking with me, i'm a bit slow sometimes but i get there.

so unless there's something you need to see, you or your administrators on here
can CLOSE this topic, if something comes up, i'll start a new one.

I will and I truly appreciate the time you have given meDid search-15 items came up but how do I paste this here-I tried and it doesn't work-I AM lost, sorryIf you don't have any screen capture utility installed, get free Gadwin PrintScreen: http://www.gadwin.com/printscreen/I'm really sorry-I downloaded the program you just suggested but have no idea what to do with it now so I can post the results of the searchGadwin manual: http://computerclub.ca/gadwin.pdfplease see the attached SCREENSHOT - and thanks again!

[recovering space - attachment deleted by admin]Yeah, something is wrong here, because my iexplore.exe file in C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer has 611KB, yours, 91KB.

Try this:
1.Click Start, click RUN, type %systemroot%\inf, and then press Enter.
2.Find the Ie.inf file that is located in Windows\Inf folder.
3.Right-click the Ie.inf file, and then click Install.
4.Restart the computer when the file copy process is complete.

Also, give me another screenshot, but do this:

so I can see whole width of "In Folder" columnIt SAYS:
FILES NEEDED
The file 'IEXPLORE.EXE' on Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 CD is needed

Type the path where the file is located and then click ok

Copy files from C:\WINDOWS\in\i386

(I try clicking and nothing happens)Please, proceed to second thing, I asked you to do for me....screenshot.Trouble understanding--my son helped me with first screenshot--I'll ask him to help again soonOK.
I can see correct iexplore.exe sizes here:

611KB, but I can't read a full path, because "In Folder" column in your screenshot is truncated.
Run search again, and write down full path, which starts with "C:\Windows\SoftwareDitribut...."

Then, try this again:
Quote

1. Click Start, click Run, type %systemroot%\inf, and then press Enter.
2. Find the Ie.inf file that is located in Windows\Inf folder.
3. Right-click the Ie.inf file, and then click Install.
4. Restart the computer when the file copy process is complete.

When you approach this MESSAGE:
Quote
FILES NEEDED
The file 'IEXPLORE.EXE' on Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 CD is needed

Type the path where the file is located and then click ok

Copy files from C:\WINDOWS\in\i386
replace C:\WINDOWS\in\i386 with the path, you just wrote down.

but how can i change the page file size

How to manually change the size of the virtual memory paging file

You must be logged on as an administrator or as a member of the Administrators group to complete this procedure. If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may also prevent you from completing this procedure.

1.CLICK START, click Run, and then type sysdm.cpl in the Open box.

2.Click the ADVANCED TAB, and then click Settings under Performance.

3.Click the Advanced tab, and then click Change under Virtual memory.

4.Under Drive [Volume Label], click the drive that contains the paging file that you want to change.

5.Under Paging file size for selected drive, click Custom size, type a new paging file size in megabytes (MB) in the Initial size (MB) or Maximum size (MB) box, and then click Set.

If you decrease the size of either the initial or maximum paging file settings, you must restart your computer to see the effects of those changes. When you increase the paging file size, you typically do not have to restart your computer. thank you for replay i tried &changed it

Solve : Changing XP User Accounts - System froze - Now Doesn't See Hard Drive at Bootup?

Answer»

The subject says it all. Was given a five year old Dell, 1.5 ghz. Added a user account for myself, with administrator rights. Deleted one old account, no problem. Deleted the second old account, and the system locked up. On reboot, got message to press F1 to retry boot, or F2 for setup. Went into setup, and saw that the system doesn't see either the C drive, or either of the CD drives. Used a set of 6 XP Floppy Boot DISKS, which worked fine, but because the system could not see the hard drive, could not LOAD Recovery CONSOLE, or do anything else. Would appreciate any HELP from anyone on this matter.Try unplugging/reseating the IDE cable...
Replace it if this doesn't work... they do go bad. Thanks for the suggestion - I'll try this later today and post the results. Anyone else out there have any suggestions? For Patio: As you suggested, I removed the hard drive, detached both the POWER and the data cables, waited a couple of minutes, reattached the cables and replaced the drive in its bay. Hooked everything back up, and everything booted up as usual. All I can conclude is that there was an electrical surge which resulted in garbage in the data or power path.

At any rate, that problem seems to be solved. Thanks so much for your help.Well done patio, great reply Good to hear it was an easy fix...
I keep a few extra Data cables around just in case...

And Welcome Aboard both of you ! !

If you're lucky, one of your ALT keys is just stuck. Try giving them a few good firm taps. If that doesn't work, try another keyboard. Is it STILL doing that after the virus was removed?i am not pressing any alt key You don't need to PRESS it. They just STICK sometimes.

Press both of them a couple of times and see if that makes it stop.

Also, try a different keyboard LIKE I mentioned before.

Solve : XP Recovery Disk for upgraded (not full installs) XP systems?

Answer»

I have found many sources of help for XP Recovery Disk options - but only for systems for which the user has a full REINSTALLATION disk - as opposed to UPGRADE Disks from say, ME to XP. Would appreciate any info on how to Recover, or Repair, an XP system, rather than simply rewiping the disk and reinstalling.State more clearly exactly what dilemna you are in; what CD's you have and what you want to ACCOMPLISH...if the reinstallation of the xp is for for missing FILE means you can use
Run:"scf /scannow"
& it will ask for xp cd and it will repair your existing system

xp provides another inbuilt applcation which will repair your existing system
i.e.,Run:"drwtsn32"

i know this much only i tried as my level best if your problem solved then
enjoy.........For #groff - Tascii - man yakub: Thanks so much for the info regarding the xp internal commands (about which I knew nothing). I'll check into this right away.

For patio: I'm retired, with no formal education or training in computers, but I do quite a bit of work on computers for friends and NEIGHBORS, etc. Frequently, I conclude that certain computers are so cluttered with unnecessary and possibly harmful software applications, to reformat and reinstall xp would require less time and effort, and be more likely to lead to a more stable system. This is the primary reason for my inquiry. I know little about repair/recovery of upgraded xp installations. I have a repair/recovery disk for Vista, which I consider to be a very valuable tool, and I was casting around for a similar tool for xp. Last night, I downloaded and burned Hiren's BootCD Version 9.5, which may turn out to be of use for xp recovery/repair. Perhaps some forum participants can furnish opinions regarding Hiren's BootCD.Repair Install of XP This is the method i use and have been using for some years....it's better than even Microsoft's method.
I suggest reading it through paying special attention to the warnings.
Then print out a copy for reference.

NOTE: This method will only work with original Microsoft XP CD's.
It will retain all the Data and programs installed if done properly.

If the customer only has a manuf. Recovery CD this method will not work. In this case you need to backup all important data as these Recovery CD's take the machine back to Day One status and all data and programs not originally installed are wiped out in the process.

Hope this helps...Patio: I'm sure this info will BECOME one of the most important reference sources for me. Thanks again for all your help. What would those of us who aspire to learn a little more about computers do - without capable persons such as you.No problem at all...
That RC tool for Vista is pretty handy tool...i could've sworn i had a link for a downloadable Recovery Console for XP but i can't seem to locate it.
I'll post it if it turns up or someone ELSE may pop in here...

Best of Luck.

Solve : How do I reinstall an Upgraded Version of XP?

Answer»

I have two aging XP machines, both Dells. Both were ORIGINALLY built with ME installed, and both received XP upgrade disks from Dell. I have both the ME and the XP upgrade disks. I am INTERESTED in wiping the system drives on both these machines in order to REINSTALL XP. My question is - if I reformat the disks, will it be necessary to first reinstall ME, and then reinstall the XP upgrade disk? Or is there some way to avoid having to reinstall ME?No.
At some point in the installation process XP will look for/ask about a qualifying earlier version... at this point simply insert the WinME CD and the install will proceed...This is exactly the answer I had hoped to get on this question. Do you have personal experience which confirms that reinstallation of the earlier O/S version is unnecessary, so long as the user has the reinstallation disks for both versions?

Thanks very much.Couldn't begin to count how many times i've done it...

PATIO: So you have resolved two of the three issues (and may have resolved the third) I posted yesterday. I very much appreciate your help.Quote from: patio on June 07, 2008, 08:05:20 PM

No.
At some point in the installation process XP will look for/ask about a qualifying earlier version... at this point simply insert the WinME CD and the install will proceed...

If the person wants to reinstall xp and the two dells where converted over to XP earlier from 2000 why put the 2000 disk in when asked if there is a past qualifying earlier version? Why not put the XP in instead? Would this reinstall 2000 instead of what he wants which is XP?

thefonzFor thefonz: I'm sure Patio will likely RESPOND to this himself - but I took his message to mean: to reinstall an upgrade to XP, first boot the XP upgrade disk. Then, at some point during the reinstall process, the user is prompted to insert the original ME disk, simply to confirm that the upgrade to XP disk is legitimate. After confirming validity of the upgrade from ME, I assume the user will be prompted by the system to remove the ME disk and reinsert the XP disk.Quote from: veritasffg on June 08, 2008, 08:38:46 AM

Solve : Reformating XP?

Answer»

I set out to reformat a XP and it seems that all was working well. I got to the POINT where it was downloading XP files and while it was downloading files it was showing you the usual text about the XP and with all the positive implements it was downloading. Then all of a sudden it stopped and gave me an error message that it had to stop to deter any damage to the computer. If you are wanting to know about the error and what it said all I can do is recreate and PUT the xp disk and just wait for it to stop again and I guess right down every word. But I will say this though it was something about the Bios but I know you will PROBABLY need some reference to start with but let me know what you want me to do. I can not do an attachment or a screen print because all that is disabled at that point in the set up of files.

thefonzHey thefone,

I guess you mean reinstalling rather the reformatting, am I correct ? if so please provide some detail information.......that will make the solving process much easier.

Thanks.

CheersThe operating sys had nine or more infections so I was reformatting not reinstalling. Basically with the xp it is easier to reformat then a 98 but still it was experimenting but like I said I finally got to the part where I was down to the THIRTY minutes to go and the computer was downloading xp files so I thought all was fine and I would be finished soon!! Then the error came up. So what I am going to do is disconnect this computer also an XP and reconnect the older xp and just bring it up to that part where it gives me the error.

thefonzQuote from: thefonz on June 06, 2008, 10:34:20 AM

I was reformatting not reinstalling.

If you run the XP install disk and choose to go for a completely new install of XP, that is called reinstalling. I know a lot of people these days call it "reformatting". I wish they would not. There is no difference.

Are you doing something different from the above?
Here is the error as typed from the screen:

A problem has been detected and windows has shut down to prevent damage to the computer.

Bad__Pool_Caller

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If problem persists, disable or remove any newly installed hardware. Disable Bios memory options such as cashing or shadowing. Is this a shiny XP CD with holograms and Microsoft printed all over it ? ?Quote
Bad__Pool_Caller

BAD_POOL_CALLER is a stop error message that is caused because of problems with the memory management. The error is seen when the computer is started up and displays the blue screen of death and gives the following message: “A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer”.

Bad or loose RAM maybe.

Yes, this XP CD came with the XP for the computer I am using.Well, I am NOT going to buy RAM to check out that theory of my problem so I am going to chuck the old disk drive and buy a refurbished newer one if there is such a drive and try this out.

thefonzThere's no reason to buy new RAM just to test it...DLoad and run MemTest on each module...this will tell you if they are healthy or not...let it run a few hours.
Any errors at all and you do have a bad stick of RAM.
Did you try re-seating it as Dias suggested above ? ?Well, wouldn't you know it. She just wants to get a new computer. So, that all she wrote for these threads and I thank you GUYS very much for your advise.

Solve : error copying file from one drive to another?

Sorry if this is a common issue. I tryed the search function with no luck. I have tryed on more that one occasion to back up my wife's files onto my computer (they are networked). Solve : Cannot send attachments FROM Outlook 2000 TO Outlook Express?

Answer»

I can send emails with ATTACHMENTS to anyone EXCEPT those with Outlook Express. They RECEIVE the email but no attachments.

If they reply saying "no attachments" and I "reply" to their reply again attaching the attachments, then the attachments are received!

When I reply to their reply the attachments go at the bottom of the email. When I am sending a new email (which is where the problem is) the emails appear within the text of the email.

I have Microsoft Outlook 2000, on Windows XPPRO.

I have SEEN this problem posted in last couple of MONTHS elsewhere - with no answers!

Any suggestions?it may be a problem with others e-mail clients... not yours. There is an option in settings to disable viewing or downloading of attachmentsRecipients receive attachments successfully from other people.

More info:
(1) The problem is not just Outlook Express, I have had it today with Lotus Notes.
(2) I have found I can "fix" the problem by using "Plaintext" rather than "RTF" - but I would prefer a proper fix so I could use RTF and make my emails look BETTER.

Solve : Problem with DirectX?

Answer»

Okay, this MAY not be the right place for this question, and if it's not, I apologize. I have a problem that is really starting to get on my last nerves.

A few weeks ago, my computer crashed because of a "failing hard drive". Alright, so I take it in to a local computer service center, and they were able to copy everything to a new hard drive and install it into the computer.

But when I turned it on later, an error message came up that said my ATI Graphics Driver wasn't installed. Hmm, that's odd. No problem, I just went to the ATI web site and installed it again. I was back up and running in no time.

Or maybe not. Now the problem is, I can't play any PC games. It would always tell me that it can't find DirectX 9. Here we go again. So I go onto the internet and DOWNLOAD the latest version of DirectX 9 no problem. I try to play a game but it still tells me that it can't find DirectX 9. Really?

So my question(s) is, did I do something wrong? Did I forget to do something? Has this happened to anyone here? Do you GUYS have any tips? I don't really know a lot about computer hardware, as I have come to realize. Thanks in advance.could you POST your computer specs also?

have you tried uninstalling it, and installing it again?..... and did you uninstall the PREVIOUS version (if any) before you tried putting directx 9 on?

Solve : windows updates won't install (fail)?

Dell 530s
windows XP sp2
Internet explorer 7

My computer is very new, less than a month old and when I go to Windows Update, the newest update is SP3. It downloaded fine, but when I try to install it, 2 or 3 seconds and it says that the installation has "failed"
My PC came with XP sp2 and I had already installed sp3, but I downloaded a photo editing software and as best as anyone could tell, it corrupted something to the point where windows would not even begin to startup, couldn't even start in safe mode. It ended up that we used the XP disc that came with the computer and reloaded windows. Everything seemed ok except the failed updates.UPDATE:
about 10:30 last NIGHT while USING my computer, the power in the house flashed off, no storm or anything, just seemed like a normal flash and everything in the house reset. when my computer (always plugged into a STANDARD surge protector strip) started rebooting, it went the DELL BIOS version screen and stopped with a cursor in the top left corner- nothing else. I went in thru the boot MENU and was able to boot manually. not sure if all problems are related but driving me nuts!!

Solve : Spilled Water on Keyboard?

Answer»

Hi,
TODAY I accidentally spilled water on my keyboard.
I cleaned up the spill, REMOVED the battery and the AC ADAPTER, but my screen stopped working. Does anyone have any advice?Umm, let's be perfectly clear on a key point here. Is this a laptop or notebook computer? Sorry, it is a Dell Inspiron LaptopChances are... you're gonna need a new laptop.Place it on a clean DRY SURFACE and put a small box fan blowing on it for as many hours as you can.
Remove the battery before doing this.

Good Luck.I am not as smart as many of these folks, but my daughter spilled soda on two of our Dell laptops at two different times. (don't ask) One keyboard had impaired keystrokes, the other was a total bust. The hair dryer fan solution didn't get it back to normal.
Called Dell and for $20.00 each, they sent two new keyboard pads which were easy to install. Voila, no new laptop needed (alas, we bought another before we found this out). My friend spilled water on his laptop last year and I told him to turn it off, take out the battery and just leave it for a few hours.

The next day, he tried and he told me the keys worked but then he said they were failing one at a time until he gave it to the computer store.

describes Adjust Date/Time having an Internet tab to allow setting time VIA the Internet.

My Adjust Date/Time only has Date & Time and Time ZONE tabs.
How do I get the Internet tab?
Strange, it should be there by default. There is a "Windows Time" service in Control Panel -Administrative Tools-Services that should be started and enabled. I'm not sure what that would AFFECT but wouldn't hurt to check. The internet time tab will not APPEAR when the computer is part of a domain.

Solve : connecting old computer to the internet??

Answer»

Hi I have a comcast scientfic America modem and I am trying to connect to the internet through a usb cable. I am running windows 2000 pro. This is really all I know about the computer. I do not know about the drivers or anything. I tried to connect using the comcast install cd but it would say connection none.
I guess my first QUESTION is do I NEED to install drivers. Which ones? Should I burn them to a cd and then install? I also tried the windows install wizard but it did not work either. Do I need to buy an ethernet card? I will be CONNECTING the computer alone, with no other computers. ThanksQuote

You need a LAN cable. They aren't expensive. It plugs into the router and into your computer.

Rhine, do you know the exact make and model of your router is? (look on the bottom, there's usually a sticker)As a general rule they connect via the same USB cables printers and the like use.The modem is model dpc2100r2

Patio I tried everything windows has to offer. there is one THING, it says enter ip address manually, but I read that will not work. I downloaded everything required on one cd, Winrar unzipped everything onto one screen. I tried to unzip setup.exe but nothing. I will go back and put each download on separate cd. Is there a simple way to down load files to cd. Once I got the files on the d drive I just click write these files to cd-

Solve : Move email (Outlook) from one computer to the other?

Answer»

The PROBLEM is that I have MS Outlook on my computer. I would like to either have it moved to my other computer or somehow be able to view it in webmail.

The computer I have it on now is WINDOWS XP Home Edition.
The other, WIndows XP Media Center Edition.

I you need any more information, just ask.

Thank you If you have Microsoft Office Installed on ONE computer...and have the software for it...you should be able to install it on the other computer...and then perform an export/import.

Or...you can configure Microsoft Outlook to save a copy of your email on your mail server. This way you can view the email locally and through your webmail application, as well.

Just remember...if you delete the email from the mail server (via webmail)...that particular email will be gone for good.

Now...if you want to export any email from Outlook, you can do so...and then import it into the email client you're using on the other computer. It just depends on whether or not the email client on the new computer can import these files from Outlook. If not...then you're out of luck.

The best way...would be to just have any additional email coming in...saved on the server.Quote from: Saviour on June 08, 2008, 12:02:56 PM

Assuming he has a single user license for MS Office, he can't LEGALLY install it on another computer unless he removes it from the old computer.

Sanman, is transferring your MS Office software from one computer to another a feasible option for you?

I have MS Outlook on both computers.

Is it possible to access all of my previous and new emails in webmail? (including my folders [I don't want to organize all of my emails over again])

ThanksSanman...

If you want to view your previous email on the new computer...like I said before...you'll have to export those emails to a FLOPPY and then import them into Outlook on the new computer.

If you want to view your new email in Outlook, as well as web mail...then you will need to configure Outlook to leave a copy on the server.

That's one way of doing it, but my preference would be to just export to a .pst file, copy that file over to the other computer, then import it into Outlook on that computer.

I am new to this site, I am no guru, but I need assistance with the following:
I recently purchased a Majicjac phone connector, when trying to install, I was advised that My OS was not compatible, I contacted the Majicjac Company and they advised I had to use MS XP in order to WORK. I have two computers at home; one has Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional and the other Windows XP Home. I am not sure how to change OS, or if this is the right way to go. I was advised by the Majicjac company that I would be UPGRADING OS -- Is that TRUE? I am not sure if I can use the disc provided when I purchased the XP to my other computer (is that illegal?) Do I have to backup all my files before performing update? Will I loose any files if I do not backup?

Welcome to the forum...

If the company states the device will not work on the computer running Windows 2000 Pro...then, you can either choose to upgrade that computer to XP...or install the software on the other computer already running XP.

You cannot use the XP disc from your other PC. You have to purchase another licensed copy...

The choice is yours to make.Quote from: latindancer1966 on June 09, 2008, 10:59:33 AM

Are you sure you don't mean MagicJack?

As SAVIOUR said, you need to purchase an upgrade version of XP for the Windows 2000 computer or else use the computer that has XP already.

Solve : lost MS works research paper?

Answer»

My 17 year old daughter sent a research paper to her sister's laptop from an MS word file as a yahoo attachment, opened it and started working on it. She swears she SAVED it. When she tried to send it back to her computer to print, she couldn't find the file. She found the 4 new files she created on the laptop to send (table of contents, etc.) but the ORIGINAL one is nowhere to be found in the recent doc. Of course it is the 25 pager. I have looked in recent documents 20 x and don't see the document name, opened the others to see if it got saved in those by mistake. not there.
any help is appreciated. it is due today, naturally.Quote

Searching using these settings:

And, I'd use wildcards, i.e. asterisks, in the search box for "All or part of the file name:". Do you know for sure what the file extension is for that file? Your forum topic title, "lost MS works research paper", says MS Works. But, you've also MENTIONED Office 2007. So, was she using Works or Office 2007? If Office 2007, was she using it on both computers? Since the specific application being used will determine the normal file extension and we have some unclear statements here regarding which application was used, that's why I suggest using search on filename.*, not filename.doc, filename.wps, etc.

And, you may want to use a wildcard in the filename part, too, in case she inadvertently changed some part of the filename. For example, filen*.* would find any file starting with filen, such as filename, filenumber, filenovember, etc. Thanks Soybean, I didn't tell Ejm to put anything in the search bar Hey, ejm: Don't leave us hangin'! Did she find the paper and get it submitted on time?

Solve : New Hard Drive, Now Nothing Works?

Answer»

I bought a new hard drive because my other ONE died. I installed XP on it with the reinstall disc. It seems as though it's working fine, but now my computer doesn't have sound and cannot connect to wireless. I'm sure there are other things not working, too. Any suggestions as to how to fix this? Thanks!what kind of computer laptop or desktop also on some devices you have to INSTALL drivers for them. It's a Dell Inspiron laptop. Where would I find these drivers? i would go to the dell website and then download the correct drivers for your model laptop. Try this: Click Start then Run and type in Devmgmt.msc

This will take you to Device MANAGER. You will see all of your devices listed here. If you see a yellow"?" or red "!" then you need a driver for that device.
go: to http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen
and enter your model or service tag (your service tag should be on the sticker on the bottom or side of your computer) and look for the drivers you need. If you download and Run the files it should fix your problem

Also, when you bought your computer, it should have came with a bunch of disks. Look through all of the CDs that came with it. The original drivers disk should be in there. It might say something like: DRIVERS AND UTILITIES. It is easier to install the drivers from this disk.

P.S. After you fix all of your drivers the next thing you should do is go to microsft update and download and install all of the updates for your machine.I installed the drivers/utilities from the disc - managed to get my sound back. I still can't get my WiFi to work, though. It keeps giving me a message that says, "Net adapter not available in system," or something like that. And finally, my computer will no longer hibernate or go into STANDBY, even though I enabled hibernate. Any more suggestions would be appreciated!

I'll do to the Dell site now and see what I can find there. At Dell's site enter your service tag # that's on the machine and they will list all your drivers.
Whenever an OS is installed all drivers are wiped out and need to be re-installed.
Start with the MBoard drivers...these should always go first. All fixed now. Thanks guys!

Solve : Problem after Rebooting my laptop - Dell XPS m1330?

Answer»

Alright guys, i have a little problem that causes a HUGE effect.

Well. there was alot of crap in my laptop so i decided to reboot it.
(first time in my life )
After rebooting it. I found that after i downloded vista, the screen looked kinda blury or "out of focus" So i looked it up in the manual...it told me to go on:
Control Panel -----> Appearance and Personalisation ----> Display settings --->Reselution

Well i tryed every single dumb "setting" and the screen is still blury.
Before i rebooted my laptop. It was fine. i could see perfectly. Also i noticed when i click my computer, i can only see the hard drive. before i could see the hard drive and some back up thingy.

I am geussing that i didnt reboot it properly?

This is the the cd's i got:

1) I already saved all files on a flash drive (just incase)

I have 3 cd's:

"Application" (for resinstalling Dell mediaDirect on dell xps computers)
"DELL Drivers and Utilities" (for resinstalling DELL XPS m1330 computer software)
"Operating system" (reinstalation DVD Wnidows Vista home permium 32 Bit)

ok, so far your with me? right!! i hope

Erm.....if you can solve the resulotion thing..id be happy
Or....If you told me how to reboot properly... ..that wud make my day!!!

Starting to get worried =( i need to get it fixed fast..please help out

thanks...oh yh...keep instructions (if given SIMPLE and easy as im only 15 years old thanks. "waiting desperatly for an answer"

Your post is KIND of jumbly.

"After rebooting it. I found that after i downloded vista." What do you mean? According to your software it originally came with Vista, right? What was on it before?

Have you tried a clean install of Vista (you said you saved your stuff to a flash drive)?

BTW - profanity isn't APPRECIATED...even if you did spell it wrong. Just a reminder

Alan <>< Some terminology...

Re-booting is simply restarting a machine
Re-installing is when you are replacing your operating system as it sounds like you have done.
When you do this it reverts the machine back to Day One status and all your data and PROGRAMS are gone.

If this is what you've done then to correct the resolution ISSUE is you need to use the Driver CD and re-install all the drivers...motherboard/chipset drivers should go first....

Solve : auto restart after splash screen?

Answer»

I am working on a computer for a friend. The computer is a Compaq Presario 5300NX. They thought the mother board was bad so they put in a new motherboard and used their existing processor, RAM, etc. When the computer is turned on, it shows the splash screen, then RIGHT before it should begin to show the desktop, it flashes a blue screen for a split second and then restarts the computer. The computer will not go into safe mode, when that option is selected after pressing F8 during boot, it begins to try to load, but never loads the desktop, right before it should, it restarts. I have ran chkdsk /r , fixboot, fixmbr, and repaired Windows XP. After the repair, It loaded to the point of being able to pick which user to log in to windows. I picked one and it loaded the wallpaper and froze. Then i booted into safe mode successfully, but it was extremely slow (took almost 10 minutes). Then it was back to the way it was when they BROUGHT me their computer. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

ChrisUnfortunately that is a normal condition when you change the motherboard in on Windows XP You need to do a windows repair. The system is trying to run the new hardware with the old drivers. Insert your windows xp DISC, boot from it, hit enter at the first prompt, then the installer should see you installation, hit R to repair the windows XP installation.
Here is some more help from MS:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/doug92.mspxI have already done that. And ? ?It was done before my inital post, and it didn't change ANYTHING.Have you re-INSTALLED the motherboard drivers ? ?
They will be on the Driver CD that shipped with the machine...I installed them in safe mode. I now have the computer to where it will boot into Windows, it just takes a very long time to do anything. It takes abou 5 minutes to load the desktop and icons after selecting a user. Once that finally loads, it is still extremely slow. I looked in the system properties and there is no hardware with a yellow exclamation mark or anything next to them.

Solve : taskbar isn't behaving?

Answer»

This is relatively minor I suppose. I'm running Windows XP. With ONE slip of the mouse, my quick LAUNCH disappeared. I managed to get the quick launch back, but now the taskbar that spans the length of the screen no longer shows the buttons representing the running programs. The part of the taskbar to the far right of the screen is there and working. But, for example, I have Internet Explorer up and running but there isn't a button on the main taskbar (to the IMMEDIATE right of the start menu and quick launch). Please let me know if you NEED clarification, it seems that this is much harder to EXPLAIN than I thought it would be. Below is a screen shot in case it helps...

Thanks

[Saving space - attachment deleted by admin]you could try locking it... right click on it and select lock the taskbarTry 'messing around' and adjusting these (before locking the task bar as Pat suggested).

Solve : booting to DOS without CD or Floppy drive?

Answer»

hey all,

I've got a laptop that I'm trying to install XP on.

The laptop has a broken CD drive and floppy drive and I don't have a external CD drive .

I've tried booting from the 'removable media' option in my BIOS but with no success. (with xp recovery CD copied to a USB key with hidden files/folders included)

I'd like to try and make a 'to DOS' bootable USB key (if I can) so I can see if I have another option.

any ideas how???

Cheers in advance Why not remove the laptop drive and use an adapter

that allows you to hook it up to a desktop machine.

Copy the i386 folder to another partition then replace the drive and run setup from there ? ?arh, ok.

so I remove the hdd.
slave it in to another machine
format it
create two partions
copy the i386 folder to one of them

and the bit I don't get;

run the install.

How can I get to a DOS prompt on startup to start winnt.exe ??

cheers for the reply.Sorry...i mis-read your Post.
I didn't see the floppy was not WORKING also.

What OS was originally on this machine ?
Is there a reason you can't replace the floppy/CD drive ?i can't replace it cos my company is cheap.

I will if nothing else will do, but I'd rather get it done today then wait gods know how long trying to get hold of a drive.

turns out, the drive is only not reading cd's, so I'm currently MOVING the data to a bootable dvd.

fingers crossed....right,

I've burnt the recovery cd to a dvd and made it bootble.

I've managed to boot to it and it's given me a command prompt at the A: drive.

A quick 'dir' shows that the A: has THING that you'd expect to see on a bootable floppy. I'm guessing that the recovery dvd has created a virtual floppy drive and loaded a dos bootable floppy disk.

There is LIGHT at the end of the tunnel.

what the *censored* do I do now???!!??

If I try to format the only drive C: it tells me 'Invaild drive, or format not supported' (format C:)

If I try to start winnt.exe it tells me it can't create a swap file.

Any ideas???

Cheers again! How exactly did you create the boot DVD ? ?
Whose Recovery CD is this and what ver. of XP ?it's samsung's own recovery cd, I copied all the data from it and made abootable dvd with nero 8.

not to worry, I found a brower.exe hidden in one of the folders on the dvd. it won't run from dos so i boot back to XP and it started a auto recovery suite.

NICE!!

cheers for your help guys.

and is swap needed if i run with 4 gig ram?The areas of RAM that are not used by XP over 3__G are reserved RAM addresses and wouldn't get used anyways even if you turned off your PAGEFILE...swap is always needed. Solve : System Restore and System Recovery Problems?

A few days ago, my anti virus software run out, so i went and bought new software to put on my laptop. In order for me to install the new software,i was prompted to REMOVE the old, so using Add and remove programs, i removed the old anti virus software, which then seemed to have removed a lot of functions from my computer. Even though the computer still had everything on there, i just could not access them, eg. When this happened, i went to do system restore, but the folder said empty to where the option should have been.

I then restarted my computer in Safe mode, in the hope that i could access the System restore function, but no joy. I then started up my computer as normal to try and run the Restore function through the RUN option on my start menu. Again no joy.

Reading through my computer manuel, i then saw a page about how, my laptop has a partitioned hard drive because all the system recovery stuff is stored on the computer, so i started up computer using the F11 button on start up as it said in my manual, and the one thing it did emphasise is that it recovers the system to its original factory settings but it WONT DELETE OR REMOVE DATA files that the user would have created. Now System Recovery seems to have allow me my normal functions again, my wifi access is working again etc, but all my original documents is not accessible. All the software must be still on the computer but just not accessible, I say they must still be on there because the same amount of MEMORY remains on the computer as to what i was left with before all this trouble started, i created a new user on the recovery procedure using the same name. Now i am searching all my computer for these files, when i click on whats labellled as Pams Documents when i go through the options of My Computer, Local Disk C, Documents And Settings, I then end up with a selection of all the users that would have been registered to my laptop. So when i click on Pam which would have been the original folder before all this trouble started it says ACCESS DENIED.

I am at a loss, as i really need these documents. I BEG YOU, PLEASE HELP, or GIVE me some IDEA of where i may be able to get the answers.

Just a few things. Its a COMPAQ Prescario 300 series Laptop RUNNING with Intel Celeron M off WINDOWS XP MEDIA CENTER
Try This...Thank you very much for that, i have now got all my files back.

COULD YOU TELL ME IF THE SAME SORT OF THING WOULD WORK FOR SOFTWARE,BECAUSE A LOT OF MY FILES WONT OPEN COS THEY NEED MICROSFT OFFICE WHICH DOES NOT SHOW UP ON MY NEW USER LIST OF SOFTWARE.

Solve : deleted too many services through MSconfig?

Answer»

trying to boost the computer I have TURNED off stuff through the msconfig inclue services. then the computer start, showing the desktop walpaper with no icons, and then log off. as much as I try to log in windows either through administartor or through my regular user, it is immidiately log off.

any help? I am desperate!!!Can you try it in Safe ModeI forgot to mention it happened ALSO when I try safe modeWhat Operating System is this?

Can you try 'last known good configuration'?I did try that as well, actually tried every thing which is on the safe mode menu... UNFORTUNATELY nothing workedWhat Operating System

Do you have the Windows Disc handy? I think you're going to need it...so far I failed to open the CDROM reader. but if I do succeed, then what should I do?It is XPPut the Windows XP CD into the drive, restart the computer and boot from the CD.
Then I would perform a repair install. Can you open Task Manager by pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL at the same time?unfortunately not. when I try the task manager it brings the screen which enable user selection for the windows, and then immidiately log off after showing for a second the desk top walpaperHave you tried a System Restore back to a point before you did this ? ?

You may be looking at a repair install.

MSConfig is NOT the place to turn services on/off. It should only be used for testing purposes...

Are you trying to Copy or Move the files?

Can you copy the files on another computer?

Is there an error message when you try to copy them?If you are using an adapter check the read/write switch

I find the switch gets moved sometimes when I slide an SD CARD or adapter into a camera or card reader.

Solve : Windows XP Media Center update rollup 2?

Answer»

Hey everyone. I have a Dell xps 400 with windows media center 2005 edition. I also have an xbox 360. I have had them connected before using the media center extender. After about 3 weeks of not using it, I went to USE it again. It didn't work. The computer didn't DETECT the 360. I used the correct security code, reinstalling the extender, the whole 9 yards. I think it might have to do with the update ROLLUP 2. I try to update to this but it always encounters an error and restarts the computer. I don't know what to do and I'm at my WHIT's end trying to FIGURE this out. Assistance would be very helpful. thanks in advance.Do you receive any type of error code when trying to install this rollup from Windows Update? Or does it just come back telling you that the update failed to install? It just tells me it failed and it is going to restart the computer.

Solve : Windows reinstall stuck in safe mode?

Answer»

My computer was having problems so I set it to turn on in safe mode using msconfig in attempt to fix it. Soon after that it went into a reboot-no.option.work cycle. I had had this PROBLEM before so like before I threw in the 6 Windows boot disks and reloaded Windows XP Home from the CD.

My problem is - since I am in msconfig safe mode Windows can't load because it can't can't load in safe mode and I can't change the boot option because I can't get into Windows.

As a last ditch approach I could scrub the drive and start from scratch but then I lose all pictures (may lose them anyway) and my movie downloads and partial downloads and bookmarks.

Any suggestion for a fix in this situation?

Sandy in FL

Hello!

Try doing chkdsk /r from the windows recovery console.

Goodluck and keep us posted! I RAN the 6 boot floppies again and this time I picked R for Recovery. I did a bootcfg / list and then a bootcfg / change (or something like that) and changed safe mode to a SIMPLE fastdetect. Now Windows is completing its load. I wonder what I'll have left to work with once it gets loaded. I'm glad I have mre than one computer. THANKS for your concern.

Sandy

Avoid it in the future. If Windows has some corruption, you often end up stuck in Safe Mode.Cool!
And nice tip, Mr. BRONI!

Solve : Slipstreaming of Multiple Svc Packs for XP Install Disks?

Answer»

I understand that, if I wanted to reinstall XP from the original XP disk (issued before Svc Pack 1), and if my current installation included Service Pack 1, I should either UNINSTALL Svc Pack 1, or slipstream my original disk to include Svc Pack 1.
That seems to make sense to me - in order to prevent the reinstall being blocked by the message that a newer version of XP is on the disk.

But what if the current installation includes Svc Packs 1 - 2 & 3, and the original install disk didn't include any Svc Pack?
Would the choice then be to either uninstall all 3 svc packs, or slipstream the original disk to include all 3 svc packs?

I suppose my question relates to whether svc packs are cumulative; i.e., can svc pack 2 be installed without svc pack 1 being installed? Can svc pack 3 be installed without either of the FIRST 2 svc packs? My advice, if you were to reinstall, would be to slipstream SP2 and SP3. SP1 is not necessary for SP2, but SP1 or 2 is necessary for SP3.
Alternatively install XP with no service packs and then install SP2, then SP3.
I've never had any issues with INSTALLATIONS being blocked because I have a newer version installed, although I always install by booting from the disk.Just use your original disk to reinstall and then go to microsoft update to get the service packs. Thanks to the two previous posters. I DECIDED not to bother with slipstreaming, and just did a clean install of XP. I immediately checked in with Windows Update, which bypassed SP1, and went straight to SP2 to download. No problems thus far - I'll probably get SP3 tomorrow. I think I agree with JJ 3000 - it's probably just as easy to go get the UPDATES as it would be to slipstream (at least on clean installs).
