Solve : Cannot boot from cd but everything works fine.?

Answer»

Hi, about a week ago my HD crashed and i sent it in for the warranty so it's still gone. But in the mean time i got another HD and decided to install windows today but the cd didn't want to boot. The cd works fine because it was used only a month ago on the other drive. The bios detects the cd rom and the NEW HD.
When i insert the cd the bios POSTS the the white "_" with the black screen just blinks. When i MESS with the bios sometimes i get no op sys found once i got the pxe-e61 error,i never got the hd failure or cd rom failure mostly just the blinking screen.I never got the press any key to continue either.
My computer is an acer 5672. Thanks. What is the boot order set to?I've tried cd rom first,hd first, only cd rom etc but no errors or anything come up.I reformatted the hd and tried to boot but i don't even get no op sys found.I think i have more problems the HD or cd rom.I got my moms hd thats works fine, put it in a external drive and it tried to load but went to the BSOD and crashed.I tried to start it again and it just sat there with the blinking screen.I think it COULD be the motherboard. If your swapping hard drives from one machine to the next you are going to have issues.
Anything after WinME is not designed to do this properly...this is intentional.

If you tried all 3 options in the boot order and it wouldn't boot to the CD there are 2 possibilities:

The CD drive has a problem...swap it into another machine to see if this is the issue.

The CD you are using is a copy of an OS CD or is not bootable. But if i have a blank Hard drive shouldn't it say "operating system not found"?Anything i tried i couldn't get it past bios. This is probably just a shot MOBO right?

Solve : video ram help?

Answer»

I have 128 MB of onboard ram on my Nvida Video card what is this for??

When does the video ram come into PLAY and why is 128 MB batter then 8 MB?

If I play a DVD does videoo ram matter?

I don't know what is going on.The RAM stores information. It can be very quickly accessed. If you have less, you can't store as much information, which will make the graphics card slower. 128 MB is plenty for WATCHING DVDs, you NEED more if you WANT to play new games.

Solve : xp start up problem?

Answer»

hi,
When start computer up, it comes up with screen which SAYS:

Intel UNDI, PXE-2.0 (build 082)
Copyright (C) 1997-2000 Intel Corporation

For Realtek RTL8139(x)/8130/810x PCI Fast Ethernet Controller v2.13 (020326)
PXE-E61 : Media test failure, check cable
PXE-M0F : Exiting PXE ROM.

Reboot and Select proper Boot device
or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a keyHas this machine been moved recently ? ?
If so remove a SIDE PANEL and double check all connections especially the cables going to the hard drive.

Make sure to remove all power first. No computer hasn't been moved recently. I was using it in evenings and shut it down. next day evening turn it on and it came up with that message, as above. computer was fine before and GAVE no problems etc. Check the connections anyways...it sounds as if the hard drive is no longer being recognised and may have failed...was it making any noises ? ?listening to hard drive, it seems to have a buzzing sort of noise from it Go to BIOS. Make sure, that the boot order reads: floppy, CD, HD
Disable Boot from Network (wording is different on every machine, may say Integrated NIC, Network, PXE-xxxxxxx)

Solve : what would windows be like without the registry??

Answer»

i wonder if it would help if microsoft got rid of the windows registry in FUTURE O.S. releases? Linux and MacOSX don't use them and they seem to be ok.

I read some people saying that Microsoft's windows still waded in "DLL *censored*" or "registry *censored*" (sorry for using the word *censored* here)Neither good or bad.

It would be good if they got rid of the registry because some uninstallers FORGET to remove the registry keys. And if you go into REGEDIT and accidentally delete something important, you'll have to reinstall Windows.

But it would be bad because Windows uses the registry to store your settings, and if instead of using the registry they would use files and put them in the WINDOWS folder, someone COULD just COME along and delete the files, whereas somebody without any knowledge with editing the registry wouldn't be able to do this at all.

Solve : Boot disk???

Answer»

All of a SUDDEN my computer is asking for boot disk to inserted in drive a and when I do I get a message that the HARD drive is not found. I am using windows XP what sould I do?First i WOULD check to see if there is a floopy disk in the drive, if so take it out and restart.

Also, have you made any recent HARDWARE CHANGES?Check your BIOS to see if your hard drive is seen there. This may be an indication of a couple of things...hard drive failure / boot sector failure.

Solve : Windows error message.?

Answer»

Hi again!

My computer sometimes freezes (for example today when i exited the game F.E.A.R, the SCREEN went black and when i reseted the computer and it logged on to windows a message SAID that windows has returned from critical error, or something like that (my windows is not in english) now i clicked "show the erorr reports technical info, and here is what it says:

D:\DOCUME~1\Fille\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER04b2.dir00\Mini031608-01.dmp
D:\DOCUME~1\Fille\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER04b2.dir00\sysdata.xml

What is this? can i FIX the problem?

Thanx in advanceHere is what someone on another FORUM did to fix the issue...

* Deleted all the files in the c:\windows\minidump SUBDIRECTORY
* Deleted the whole c:\docume~1\(your
logon)\local~1\temp\werl.tm.dir00\ directory (ie the file(s)
*and* the directory itself.
* Defragmented the hard drive (someone else said this helped; if
anyone can explain why, I'd love to know, but maybe just do it
because I did and the problem went away).
* Disabled hibernation (probably nothing to do with the problem,
but I did it anyway)
* Ensured the (ACPI) power switch on the PC was configured to do
a shutdown (rather than Ask, Standby, etc).
* Shut down the PC

Try is and post back.

Solve : dwwin.exe?

Answer»

I keep seeing this error message when shutting down my computer (dwwin.exe). This has been happening for a while now and it doesn't happen every shut down. Does this ring a bell with anyone?

Info on my SYSTEM... HP Pavilion a330n, WINDOWS XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 (build 2600), 2.15 gigahertz AMD Athlon XP, 960 Megabytes Installed Memory.

Thanks in advance for your help! It looks like Adobe Acrobat Reader conflict with Dr. Watson. Read here:
http://www.anetforums.com/posts.aspx?ThreadIndex=61323Thanks for the info Broni. I un-installed Adobe Acrobat Reader and replaced it with Foxit Reader 2.2 which is much faster than Adobe Acrobat Reader. So far the message has disappeared when shutting down. I'll update this thread if a few days to let everyone know how it goes. Good move I still get the same message every now and then but for the most part it's GONE. DLoad and install CCleaner and use the "issues" tab to clean out any remnants of Adobe...Good advice patio.....I'll do that and see how it goes. Thanks! Patio your suggestion on running CCleaner to get rid of the remnants of Adobe did the trick. I've restarted SEVERAL times and haven't had the error message once! Thanks for your help patio and Broni! Good going

Solve : "Forgotten" password problem in Windows XP Pro Recovery Console?

Answer»

Desktop Specs (this system was built for me in 2005):
Motherboard: Asus a8v Deluxe

CPU: AMD 64 3200 (Winchester)

Boot disk: WD Caviar SE 160GB

Add'l disks: WD Caviar SE 160GB, Maxtor DiamondMax 21 (IDE-320 GB), Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 (IDE-250GB), WD My Book Essential (External USB-500GB)

OS: Windows Professional SP2 - 32-bit (OEM)

Optical drive: LG GSA-4120B (A115 update)

I am the only person who ever uses my desktop; the PATA, and external disks I added on later without a hitch.

This mess began last night when I flashed my desktop's mobo BIOS to the 1018.002 beta upgrade, which I did from the ASUS upgrade utility on Windows. Once I rebooted, I went into the CMOS and changed the onboard controllers to turn off Promise and pick up my SATA drives from the VIA controllers. The BIOS found those (and the PATA, optical and external drives) just fine.

Rebooted and got the NTLDR error. Set up CMOS to reboot from Optical drive, put the CD in, rebooted, F6'ed at the blue screen, put in the VIA controller update from the floppy and all went well. The recovery console found my SATA drive where the OS is installed and prompted me to enter my password.

I entered the password I've been using at login for the last few months. No dice. Twice. No. Three and I was out. I am fortunate to also have a laptop or I would be absolutely livid right now. I've googled for help to no avail.

What are my options? Thanks!

You may want to READ this

Error message when you log on to Recovery Console in Windows XP: "The password is not valid"

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308402

What prompted you to flash the BIOS to begin with ? ?I was attempting to burn a DL disc first in Nero 7 Ultra and then in IMGBURN - both faulted with a write error.

The IMGBURN site said that when that happens, if the burner's driver is updated (which it is), then it's probably a fault of the mobo BIOS being out of date. I checked against the Asus site and in the CMOS, and the BIOS on the mobo until last night was 1005. So I flashed it to 1018.002, I thought successfully.

I'm now hunting for my old XP boot floppies to see if rebooting that way will work, but I think those may be Pro SP1, I'm not sure.A BIOS flash should never be used unless specific issues with the MBoard exist...i certainly wouldn't take a software vendors word for it.
The boot floppies will only let you get to the RC and you may still be prompted for a password.
Try the link posted above first. The Microsoft article I linked to above says an updated boot disk set MIGHT be a solution

Quote

The Setup disks have been updated to correct the problem that prevents you from starting Windows XP
Problem solved!

In order to flash the BIOS, I first had to make my optical drive my secondary master IDE drive. My normal setup is SATA 1, SATA 2, optical drive primary master, CD drive primary slave, IDE HD secondary master, IDE HD secondary slave.

What I'd forgotten is that in order for XP to see my SATA drive after the flashing, I had to put the drive configuration back to what it was. I did so and BINGO! No boot disks necessary. Duurr...

So what have I learned?

1) Put things back the way they were when you're done with them.
2) Don't work on fixing things so late at night that you end up tired and forget number 1.

Thanks for your responses, Dias and patio. It helped me to think things through for myself.Glad you got it sorted and Welcome Aboard !Now that you've cured your problem you should try to enter the Recovery Console again. If you cannot get past the request for a password read on...You may want to enter the Recovery Console some time later...

On many XP installations you can't start the Recovery Console because it won't recognize your password, neither will it ACCEPT a blank password. This registry edit causes the Recovery Console not to ask for a password. This works for both XP Home and XP Professional.

Start | Run | Regedit
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Setup\RecoveryConsole
Set the DWORD SecurityLevel value to 1
Exit Registry and Reboot

Solve : Quad core in xp?

Answer»

Hello! i dont remember from where i heard this, but someone wrote/said that xp does not support quad core PROCESSORS, that it can only use 1 core?

Is this only bull**** or is it true?

I'm pretty sure that mine recognices all four, because when i run some cpu stress tests and open everest it says that all four cores are running at 100%, i just want to be sure.

ThanxXP SP2 (doesn't matter if it's Home or Pro) supports both dual and quad core.
I have heard though that Vista handles multi core processors better since it was written with multi core processors in mind.Ok thanx for the info! Quote from: Deerpark on March 15, 2008, 07:22:12 AM

Just curious - what about pre-SP2 ? Good question Willy...
There were performance issues with dual cores that was corrected with SP2.

That's interesting.

I see it also says:
Quote
... Additional updates are available to optimize performance and behavior on computers that are running Windows XP SP2. Without these updates, computers that are equipped with these power management-capable, mobile, dual-core processors may experience decreased performance or unexpected behavior.

and it looks like "Download the WindowsXP-KB896256-v4-x86-ENU.exe package now." is what that refers to.

OT side note:
I see ANOTHER link there:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909944/
"Game performance may be poor on a Windows XP-based computer that is using a dual-core processor"
that looks like info that would often be useful to the gamer folks that frequent CH.

Thank you.
Just to clarify http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909944/ refers to a problem with 64 bit XP. 64 bit is actually a completely different codebase than 32bit so this problem is likely not to be applicable for 32 bit.

Nothing to see here, move along.Quote from: Deerpark on March 15, 2008, 12:33:07 PM

But the article is pretty OLD and the performance issue only occurs if the game programmers use a special function to calculate timing.

Solve : xp??

Answer»

I recently purchased a sony vaio at a garage sale..didn't take LONG for my teenagers to crash it..I do not have the original disk's that came with the computer...what would happen if I used a restore disk from a diffrent computer and then just installed the correct drivers from the sony website? We won't know until you try it and tell us. I would not be at all surprised if a different manufacturer's restore disk would boot, check the BIOS and then IMMEDIATELY stop with a message like "Wrong machine ID", but maybe not.

It really is kind of strange but it seems like it is working...wouldn't you think the manufacturer's would PUT some kind of block to this?
I'm sure glad they didn't...I can let my teenagers live for another week...

Solve : Dos program slowing down windows?

I am running windows Xp home edition on a new AMD pc. I noticed whenever i run a DOS program, it slows down the performance of my system dramatically. For example, if at the same time im running Windows media player, when swtiching to the next song, there is a lag. Please tell me why? How do i rectify this problem? It doesn't.
The only DOS left in XP is the emulator used to run 16 bit DOS applications. The cmd is a command line shell with a DOS like syntax written for XP.
The emulator isn't very good by the way. This is why projects like DOSBox have appeared to provide a BETTER DOS emulation.Yeah -- I noticed the current DOS emulator doesn't support a lot of the old DOS command options / switches from the good ol' days...

I had some trouble with this one. I hope i did it right. I apologize for my ignorance but i am not sure where the HJT directory is. I changed the name like you asked but i changed it from my list of programs. When i right clickd it after i changed the name, i didn't see an option to move to desktop so i dragged it there. It didn't look right so i took my program on the desktop and changed the name there to.I wasn't clear enough. I wanted you to go to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis folder, and rename HijackThis.exe file, but it doesn't matter, because your HJT log is CLEAN!

One, non-important entry we want to clean....
Open HJT, and checkmark this entry:
- O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C8B2A36-3DB1-42A4-A3CB-D426709BBFEB} - (no file)
Click "Fix checked".

Now...
Download, and install CCleaner: http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds. Get "Slim" version.
Read CCleaner instruction here: http://www.jahewi.nl/ccleaner/ccleaner.html, and run CCleaner

Let me know, how the computer is doing. Its doing great:) Thanks again for all your help.
I am not sure how a site like this exists for free but i sure am glad for it:)
Super!

BTW...it's not free...the bill is in the mail!

...just kidding...LOL

Solve : Cannot login?

Answer»

Hi,

I am on Windows XP Pro and I am a user, not an admin. I was TRYING to work on getting rid of a spyware that was hard to get rid of. And, I followed instructions from online help. It asked me to GO to safemode. I could not get it to work with F8, so I changed it through msconfig.

After rebooting and getting the logon menu, it keeps telling me I am not recognized. I, also, SEE that there is no option to pick a network. This is a work COMPUTER and don't want to ask for help on this.

Does anyone have a solution, I am in dire need!

THANKS,

Solve : Please Help - I'm about to Switch to a Mac?

Answer»

Help. Doesn't it bother anyone that Microsoft, the big chip-makers, the big MB makers, and others in the business can't get their act together and actually fix the billions of problems that result from their products and the interaction of their products? I've tried to be LOYAL for years- at the age of five I used my dad's old Radio Shack TRS-80 and then a few Tandys, and I've been using PCs since... but I'm about to throw in the towel. The only way to convince these companies to start fixing their problems and start talking to each other is to decrease their market share and effect their earnings. Alright, sorry for my rant. I'm done now.

ANY help on these problems would be wonderful.

1) My computer (WinXP SP2, AMD processor, HDs w/ RAID 0, 1 GB RAM, Nvidia v-card) is extremely sensitive to static. Computer is off the ground, inside desk, closed in case, and apparently grounded (proper power cable to wall)..... however, about 1 out of every 8 times I approach or walk away from my desk, the computer drops to the blue screen of death, with CRITICAL errors in key windows files (usually winsys.exe). I don't even touch the computer. Is there anyway to insulate the motherboard further? Is there any solution other than buying a new motherboard? (I already tried buying new RAM and other components, didn't work.)

2) MS ACTIVESYNC periodically and randomly just stops. Mobile Device still sitting in its USB cradle, not touched. REMOVING and reconnecting the device usually connects it again. Tried updating and/or reinstalling ActiveSync - doesn't solve it.

3) Now (and I admit this is a insignificant problem), some of my small icons in various programs are just not appearing, randomly! The little printer icon in Word, when you go to the print menu; the icons along the top of MSN Messenger window; occasionally icons within explorer; etc. But its not even CONSISTENT- its just now and then!

Any ideas? Thanks.I don't know about the other two but the first one sounds like your not grounded. Do you use a surge protector? I would never plug a computer right into the wall with out one.

Also keep in mind that surge protectors wear out over time. You may need to replace yours if its over a year old.

That is a SERIOUS hardware issue, and not likely the fault of any of the big chip makers or Microsoft. I wouldn't even bother trying to fix any of the software issues until that is taken care of. Repeated system crashes are going to make a mess of things. What make/model is the PSU ? ?
I'd also look more at your electrical situation before assuming MS is the culprit.that is scary.... but like Patio dont blaim MS.

I will think about it in the mean time to me its one of those technology problems that hit you and make you stumble.

Solve : Funky Text Cursor Thingy?

Answer»

I have been getting a weird cursor in IE7 (XP Sp2). When I am typing, I don't GET the usual flashing "|" thing, I am getting a "|" with a small black triangle at the TOP on the right.

I've even got it as I write this message!

What is this & why is this?Control PANEL > Appearance & themes > Mouse Pointers (on left) > Pointers (at top)

Check that 'Windows default' is the selected scheme then 'apply'.

If this doesn't fix it, double click on 'text select' cursor & select 'beam_l' (I THINK that's the right one).It didn't work. Just so you know, the cursor thing is only in text boxes in internet explorer (7). Everywhere else, it is the proper flashing | eg notepad, word etc
Tools>Internet Options>Advanced tab. Click on "Reset" button.when i turned my COMPUTER on today it was gone. very weird.

thanks anyways.Restart cures many things.....

I sometimes use Winamp, albeit an older version.

When you click Add Dir, it will pop up a pick list. Notice that you can only 'drill down' to directories (or folders, if you prefer that term instead). You cannot select an individual file. You can select a directory, and Winamp will add all the music files in that directory at once.

You should also see a checkbox that will tell it to recurse sub directories.
If you have that on, it means that in addition to the seleced directory, Winamp will also search all directories below it, and add all music files it finds.

When you click Add File, Winamp again will pop up a pick list, but this time you can can choose files. ONE at a time, or multiple files if you hold down on Ctrl or Shift.

Your best bet is to EXPERIMENT with it for a few minutes, and you'll see the difference in the two functions, and in the future you'll know which one suits you best at the moment.

Good question. I don't know. It will be interesting to find out.

http://www.winamp.com/plugins/details/74076

I have not tried it, nor gone beyond seeing:
"A directory watcher and automatic playlist enqueue plug-in
Watches your music directories for changes and adds new files to the end of your playlist."

If there is more to read there, you should - before attempting to install it.

But it sure does sound good, doesn't it?

So we can pick a winner!!! Seriously, I'm not sure what you mean...Operating systems aren't designed to run at the same time and can't WITHOUT virtualization software/hardware.I wonder if EJJones left a 'not' out of his or her post?

my gf changed my password on my COMPUTER..............i have windows xp............can i get around this and delete it or do i have to buy windows and reload the ENTIRE system?

i appreciate any help.............she obviously doesnt live here anymore.lol

peace everyone...................AlaskajeffI would take some GUESSES at what she would have changed it to....try some nasty names also...depending on how the relationship ended...but you might have to reload windows from the original DISK that came with the computer if you have it...good luck...Or, do you have a sticker on the computer with the Windows XP product registration number? You may be able to borrow a Windows XP disk of the corresponding flavor for a reinstallation (whether XP Home or XP Professional) and perform the installation with the borrowed disk and your LEGITIMATE product key.

We don't advice here on password cracking. Girlfriends may be costly, sometimes.Contact Microsoft...they love girlfriend stories.Quote from: patio on March 07, 2008, 07:01:34 PM

Solve : wmpnscfg.exe?

Answer»

Hi all, trying to disable wmpnscfg.exe

disabled all services related wndows emdia player and media center, disabled it in msconfig,
was told i should go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\P references\HME and find the DisableDiscovery key and set it's DWORD value to 2, however I don't have that key, was told however I could create it

could someone tell me how I create the key? i also need to know the key's binary dataYou want to disable it as a startup?
What happened when you disabled it in msconfig? And why do you want to do this ? ?wmpnscfg.exe is used to alert users when a new media device is found on the network. If you are not sharing files on a network you don't need it. It is a file associated with Windows Media Player 11, and it is often CALLED "the program that will not die". You can do these THINGS I list here but afterwards you just start WMP11 and it is back, RIGHT?

Disable it in MSCONFIG
Check it is disabled in SERVICES.MSC
Run Hijack this! to detect and remove wmpnscfg.exe
Delete wmpsncfg.exe and wmpnssci.dll from the folder C\Program Files\Windows media player

The fix, as you have found, is to either modify this value which is a DWORD

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Preferences\HME\DisableDiscovery

so it has a value of 2

Or, if it does not EXIST (yet), create it and set the value to 2.

[insert standard warning that fooling with the registry can screw up Windows here]

1. Start Regedit
2. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Preferences. Click the + sign next to the name to expand the subkey tree.

If you do not see a sub key called HME under Preferences in the left hand pane...

3. Right click Preferences in the left hand pane
4. Choose New, Key.
5. A new key icon (like an opened folder icon in Explorer) will appear under Preferences with the name highlighted for editing.
6. Make the name read HME and hit the ENTER key

If it is there already...

7. Highlight the HME key by left clicking once

If DisableDiscovery is not in the right hand pane

8. Click in the right hand pane and choose New... DWORD value
9. Edit the name from New Value #1 to DisableDiscovery and click away from it or hit enter.

If DisableDiscovery is there but has a binary value different from 0x00000002...

10. Right click DisableDiscovery and choose Modify (The topmost option, in bold)
11. Change the value from 0 to 2
12. Click OK
13. Exit Regedit
14. Restart computer

Solve : AGRSM.SYS?

I started my computer and got a blue SCREEN message saying that there had been a problem and the problem seems to be in the AGRSM.sys file.

Looking at this website: what-is-exe.com I learned that there is a file called agrsmmsg.exe, but that spyware and adware try to immitate names. How can I find out what exactly agrsm.sys is?Quote from: Starwind51

Solve : Windows XP running too slow?

Answer»

Hey guys, I bought a Toshiba laptop in mid 2005, has Windows XP, 1.5Ghz processor, 512mb of RAM and 40gb HDD. It was a good computer and I've never had any problems until 2007. I messed up the computer after I accidentally downloaded a virus, doing some BAD registry fixes and probably a component overheat, and proceeded to take it to a shop and have someone look at it. They suggest I should reformat so I left the computer at their hands, not knowing they were going to use a pirated version of XP to reformat it. After I took my laptop back home I tested it by opening many programs at once, and saw a significant decrease in speed.

After a few more reformats during that year, here I am with a very slow laptop at my hands. It would take 5 minutes to boot up to the welcome screen! After that, everytime I want to open up an application, say Firefox, the mouse would lag and other programs would come to a brief standstill until Firefox opens up. And I could only run about 5 to 6 WINDOWS at once without making the computer come to a standstill. But my computer has only 36 processes running (a LOT less then the 50+ processes when I first bought it), and only about 9 or so STARTUP items.

I am considering a good clean reformat of a real Windows XP copy, but I'm not sure it would fix the problem. So if anybody could help, I would really appreciate it Quote

I am considering a good clean reformat of a real Windows XP copy
It should be your first step. What if that does not fix the problem? We won't know until we try.
If I was you, I'd do very same thing. Its usally caused by programs that haven't fully been unistalled or left BEHIND. Malware an spyware could cause this as well if you dont want to reinstall xp.Well I run weekly scans with AVG 7.5 and Ad-Aware Personal and never had any bad infections since the reformat this year. I use CCleaner and defrag too but still they don't CHANGE anything.

Could a component overheat cause the problem? I've had a few crashes because of the laptop overheating but now I use a notebook cooler pad.Well, having said that, I think you should do good clean reformat of a real Windows XP copy...Okay thanks guys I will go ahead with the reformat. I will let you know if the problem is still there after that Good luck!!!

Solve : Built Computer and cant install windows??

Answer»

Its a asus A8V the chipset is VIA K8T800Prook ...I have the manual ,but I have to go out for about 45 minutes ....... I'll be back then .

dl65 sounds good take a look at that ill be back in the morning..Your still here ....I was a bit longer than I thought.ok i am back have you noticed anything i could of done wrong?i do also get this ntldr missing error could that be the problem? And that happens only when i wait to long to press a bottomPress a bottom what?Sorry guys for butting in but don't you have to install the SATA drivers first with Windows XP?
As I seem to remember, the standard XP system does not RECOGNISE SATA drives. For starters, XP doesn't recognise SATA drives.

NTLDR is the remnants of when XP was the mainfrome Windows called Windows NT - it means NT LoaDeR. That appears when there's no operating system on the drive. I know DOS is supposed to be extinct now, but there's a tiny remnant of it underlying XP. So.

1.) Download the right SATA drivers for your hard drive. This might mean visiting ain INTERNET CAFE.

2.) Make sure the disc, whether floppy or CD, is bootable

3.) Install the drivers. Make sure the first drive to be looked at is the drive where the bootable disk with the drivers on is. If it's on a floppy, you'll have to change the startup sequence in BIOS to read the floppy first.

4.) Once the SATA drivers have been installed, remove the drivers disk you just used for the installation. Restart the COMPUTER. IF you have to change the sequence in BIOS so the CD-Rom is found first, do it now. If you've done a sequence change, put the Windows CD in the drive and restart the system.

5.) Touch wood (I pat my head), it SHOULD start installing Windows now. If not, try the following:-

Download a DOS startup disc. This'll be a floppy, you can download it from Bootdisk.com. There's other sites, too, Bootdisk I think is charging these days. It shouldn't be! Anyway.

Once you've got the startup disc downloaded and set up (hallo Internet cafe again!) then startup your system using it. You should get a C: prompt (Or maybe an A prompt. If you get the A:, then just tyhpe C: (no space) and press ENTER.

On the hard drive, create a directory called Windows. (MD Windows. There's a space between the MD and the Windows. MD means Make Directory. You physically type in the word Windows after the MD.

Change to that directory (CD Windows.) That will get you into your new empty FOLDER.Then create a directory called I386. Go into that. (MD I386, then CD I386.)

On the Windows disk, you'll find a whacking great folder called I386. Copy that into the O386 folder you're in on the hard disk. The one you've just created.

When it's copied over (it might take awhile) you'll find a file called Setup. Double-click on that. Because you're on the hard drive and everything else is now on the hard drive, it should recognise the hard drive and start setting Windows up. I386 is the main setup directory, you see. It might need to access the Windows CD-ROM for a few things, but it'll set most of itself up automatically.

Tell me if all that worked. If no, I'll tell you another way of doing it! But it should do, because it's ON the hard drive now!

Yours in friendship

Solve : XP & Vista?

Answer»

Well my friend decided to "PLAY" with my laptop, and "accidently" instaled windows XP onto my computer. I had already had Vista instaled, and was in the process of getting ubuntu. When he gave me my computer back, i put ubuntu on it, and noticed a seperate partition.

When i booted grub, i had the "Windows Vista/Longhorn loader" option, but when i select it, it boots xp. I have confirmed that Xp and vista are on diffrent partitons. I just need to know how to boot them seperatly.

Thanks. If I were you, I would start by slapping my "friend" in the head. LT if you could post more info on how the partitions are laid out including the Linux one it may be easier to assist...
Also a copy of your boot.ini file from the XP install would be good.
To have it listed when in XP go to Start/Run and type in msconfig and hit Enter...click on the boot.ini Tab and copy and paste it here.sure thing, just need to switch to windows, my network drivers arnt working on xp so ill have to get the data on a removable drive then access it from ubuntu

errm

basicaly:

HDD 0:

Partition 0: Windows Vista (NFTS)
Partition 1: Windows XP Home (NFTS)
Partition 2: Ubuntu (EXT2)
Partition 3: Swap (Ubuntu)
Partition 4: a random floating section of hdd space? only 54 mb?

ill update in a bitboot.ini ? ?
Why do you have an Ubuntu swap drive ? ?
Was this your friends idea as well ? ?\
Also post the sizes if you can...I thought most Linux distros like having a swap file...

Not disputing you, Patio, just my limited experience...apparantly so... im kinda pissed cause im the one tht was fixing his computer, and let him use MINE while i was doing it, sice it was only for a day, hes like "btw i instaled ubuntu and xp but dont wory there on seperate partitions"...... ill have tht info file in a bit, i have to run out right now

heres my boot.ini data:

Code: [Select][boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition"/noexecute=optin/fastdetectYes, that was a large leap to make...presuming to install a whole 'nother operating SYSTEM on a computer which was kindly on loan.

Ubuntu is a great version of Linux which I would recommend; however, not under the circumstances which you were introduced.no, dont worry that
Ubuntu is a great version of Linux which I would recommend; however, not under the circumstances which you were introduced.s laptop (my primary) had been giving me troubles, so i backed up, and formatted. I had ubuntu 7.10, vista, and a *cough* unix based os thats not meant for pcs *cough*

i guess he thought he was doing me a favor reinstalling ubuntu, and i always complain about vista, so i guess he meant well with xp too.

back to the point, anyone have any SUGGESTION?im not one to bump topics, but i still cant boot windows vista.

anyone have any suggestions?Quote

You have OSX on your PC??!!

I don't know enough about multi-booting to be constructive, here...
(or pretty much every other thread... )You can give Vista Boot Pro a try...
It's able to fix an existing Vista BOOTLOADER and also has an option for adding those other OS's to the boot menu.
Otherwise you may have to use the Vista DVD to repair ir.

Solve : banana.ani?

Answer»

when i try to recover my window xp it said it couldn't find banana.aniA COMMON problem. One reason could be if you are using a bootdisk from bootdisk.com where the CDROM is actually CALLED banana, which causes a filename clash. You would need to make a new bootdisk with a different VOLUME name.

If you are getting an option to skip the file, then do so. You don't need it. If you get lots of file copy errors, HOWEVER, it could mean you have RAM troubles.

Solve : Blue screen on Start Up?

Answer»

I have a blue screen issue on startup. Here is the info for the blue screen:

The problem seems to be caused by the following file: redbook.sys

DRIVER_UNLOADED_WITHOUT_CANCELLING_PEND ING_OPERATIONS

I have looked around on the forum here and can't find any related problem. I do not have the reboot disk and even when I try to run virus scans in safe mode and reboot normal, it gives me the same message. Is there any thing that I can try or is this too far gone?

Thanks for all your help in this matter.

Hi there

What security do you use? have you tried scanning for Malware? apparently, some malware disguise themselves as redbook.sys.HereWe use Nortons and no I haven't looked for malware. Is there a good program to use for this in safe mode? Thanks. You might WANT to check what Neljan had posted....

Solve : XP vs Vista?

Answer»

XP Quote from: Jek Hawkins on February 24, 2008, 09:28:20 AM

OK well here are my two BITS...

ALL OF THIS IS IMHO

Of the 3, Mac OS is the most reliable and the most powerful: I have not used X Leopard, but I have used other versions of X, all of which are tremendously reliable and next to impossible to kill (100% bulletproof), something that Windows systems are not

NOW, you must realize that Apple builds its computers to be PERFECTLY in harmony with the software, something that is not so easy on Windows-base machines, since there are so many combinations of hardware in any single computer build...

As such, given an option, I will say MAC OS X

The original question was XP or vista, so I will address this-again all IMHO

XP all the way-because I like to be in control of my computer, XP far beats out vista, which is substantially more (and far FAR too much IMO) automated than xp-similarly, I've found that xp machines are tremendously more reliable than vista machines, probably owing to the age of the OS (more time, more revision) and to the fact that vista just takes a bit too much too quickly

let me explain

ok, so vista is nice looking and all, and the sidebar is a cool addition but did you ever take into account the amount of POWER the features take? A number of CS and SE majors at FIT have seen repeated crashes of the vista window-graphics generator so that they are left with horrid-looking window appearances that cannot be rectified-to make matters worse, the problem happens often and sporadically, so one moment the windows are nice and clean, then the next they are BLECCH

sidebar, LIKEWISE, cool idea, TRYING to mimic the mac dashboard, but failing miserably since even a few applications in the sidebar is enough to take better than half of an average computer's processor power

but let me get to the point, since i could continue my rant forever...

MAC > XP > VISTA

bottom line:

MAC:

easiest to work with, most reliable, USER HAS TREMENDOUS CONTROL

most expensive bc macs are built to the OS

XP:

features games that MAC doesn't have ** just a note, EXCELLENT RELIABILITY compared to vista, looks decent and takes much less CPU power overall, very compatible, portable across many many systems, mixes automatic and manual functions well

might be too common (high risk for virus?), of the 3 it looks the worst

vista:

looks great, almost EVERYTHING automated, very idiotproof

vexes fans of actual computer CONTROL, horridly unreliable, like 98 1st ed. fragile as heck, my laptop ran out of power 1x, completely and utterly ruined the OS, still fixing problems and discovering new ones X.X

Some of this may be interpreted as accurate...mostly conjecture and opinion though.
What are you running now ? ?

How long have you had Vista ? ?Quote from: patio on February 27, 2008, 04:20:55 PM

Some of this may be interpreted as accurate...mostly conjecture and opinion though.

How long have you had Vista ? ?

Yeah, I was sure to put IMHO for that reason.

I am running:

Windows XP Professional SP2
Vista Ultimate x64 (one of the reasons I HAD to put IMHO) SP1
Windows 98 SE

all separate machines, though the XP Pro DOES have Virtual PC with Win98SE

I've had Vista since June of last year, when Ultimate only came in x64 and NO computer manufacturer ALLOWED a choice between Vista and XP (I am pretty sure of this because I went to a number of websites to look for a manufacturer with XP, but couldn't find any-since then I have seen that most manufacturers offer a choice now )ok thanks everyone!!

i did my report 25-50% on what you guys said, i didn't copy and paste, i added quotes, and my teacher is very fond of this site, he likes it, but won't tell me his username of this site!Probably street...LOOOOOOOOOL

Solve : System files deleted, not sure how many... what can I do??

Answer» HI, I'm new to this place so I hope this is the right section to be posting. I have an annoying problem on my hands and I have no idea how serious it is. ><

Basically, I was LOOKING around for some programs to optimize my computer today (I use Windows XP Home Edition - Service Pack 2 with the latest updates) and while visiting a site that listed a bunch I found to be useful, I downloaded something called EasyCleaner by ToniArts.

The link is here: http://personal.inet.fi/business/toniarts/ecleane.htm

Anyhoo, the program has various options involving cleaning up unwanted stuff on your computer LIKE temporary files you're no longer using, stuff like that. One option is to search for duplicate files that are taking up space and deleting them... well, I was uncertain at this point but thought it wouldn't harm anything to scan. So scan I did, and it listed all the duplicates it found and, having had a good experience with the rest of the programs the person on this site recommended I... did something stupid... and deleted these duplicates. well, instantly I got some messages popping up telling me this is a system file yadda yadda yadda, unwise to delete and so-forth, so I decide yeeeah... maybe I won't delete them after all. But it turns out these messages were telling me what I had done, not warning me against doing it. Damage done.

So here's the results... I wasn't sure what to expect, so not noticing anything wonky or not working properly, I rebooted to see if any error messages would pop up so I could maybe see what needed fixing. Well, the first thing that seemed wrong, was everything was in the old style windows theme (no silver window frames or anything, and the option to have Windows XP Style stuff in Display Properties is not even there anymore - only the Windows Classic setting remains). Also, I couldn't create new shortcuts on the desktop anymore (although I fixed this problem by getting a new DLL file). Another thing, the System icon in Control Panel isn't even there any more and I dunno, I noticed these things as I ran into them and am wondering just how much stuff is missing and how or if I can GET it back. Honestly, I feel really dumb and hope I haven't damaged anything beyond repair.

Is there at least any way I can check what was deleted or changed in the last little while?

P.S. I tried a system restore to a point in the same day, just before doing the duplicate file deletion thing (cuz I had misgivings) but it did nothing and I no longer seem to have any restore points at all on my computer, not from today or any other day.

P.P.S. I keep up to date on the latest anti-virus updates (AVG 8.0), spyware (Spybot - S&D 1.5.2.20), and scan daily.

Thanks in advance to all those who offer any advice. Deleting duplicate files can be dangerous system wide as some files are located in more than one place by design...
System Restore may not always work to fix this depending on how good/recent your restore points are so it's a false sense of security at best.
One thing you can try: Go to Start/Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter.
Have your XP CD handy as it will ask for it. Let it run to completion and re-boot.

Good Luck and you may want to check in next time before running any app that advertises better performance.
Some work...some can cause havoc.Yeah, if I'd known about this site earlier I definitely woulda checked.

In regards to your advice, the machine I'm using is made by e-machines and didn't come with a Windows XP disc. All it came with was an e-machines restore DVD, which the scan thingy you told me to do doesn't recognize (says it's the wrong disc). Any other suggestions? xP

And thanks again for helping me with this problem.oh and one more thing i noticed... i seem to have no anymore sound on my compie o_oIf you know someone who has one i would borrow an XP Home SP2 CD.I'm on it, thanks!

Also, I got the sounds working again... this is gonna be a long, arduous process, I can tell xDIt may take a Repair Install...let us know how it goes.
