all of my scans come up clean now but that is my only PROBLEM nowcheck for a hidden file called autorun.inf in the root folder of your C: drive and remove it if present.
already did thatIf (and ONLY if) you are Ok with editing the registry you could try this, but please don't blame me if you screw the PC up worse.

1.
Open the Registry Editor (Start - Run - regedit) and check the following:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows NT/Current Version/Winlogon

The parameter Userinit in the right window should have the following value

C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe.

Any additions should be deleted.

2.
Delete the following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Explorer/MountPoints2.

This step should be repeated for ALL users on the computer including the built-in Administrator account.

3.
Reboot the computer

Solve : Subject of updates?

Answer»

I read a few post to the original post from Savior back « on: June 26, 2007, 11:19:00 PM »

It is interesting IMHO how the subject CHANGES over time...although this post itself is not the place to open up to an unrelated, new subject commenting on THAT subject; i wonder if anyone here has ever wondered how and why "subjects" morp more often than not into something that can in short order have nothing to do with the original post (subject)? For instance are you wanting to comment on this subject? Notice that i say that this post: " ....is not the place to open up to an unrelated, new subject...." yet i spend more time talking about this "unrelated subject" than the subject of computer maintenance

So lets see if i can talk about Saviour's advice to leave MS updater on.

I keep my MS updater off. Here's why: If i leave it on, it endlessly reminds me that there is a program that MS wants to install on my computer. i do not want to install this particular "program", but it NAGS you like a spoiled child or a demanding spouse or anyone who tries to control you by being pushy and even relentless in manipulating you to do what they want you to do. But since i have not found a way to just tell the updater to only notify me of all other UPDATES, fixes, and so on, i turned it off and go to the MS site and do my best to get everything else that it recommends. But if this isn't just a bad dream i'm pretty sure that the download page is noticing that i haven't allowed this program to be installed on my computer and is making it hard to get other things such as maintenance updates.

If someone knows a way to tell the updater to stop reminding me to download this spy on my PC; please tell me.

One more thought about the subject of updating. i tried an experiment with two "new" "reformatted reinstalled OS" computers. One, i updated every update that was being recommended. The other I did minimal updates. The one i did the least with was noticeably faster than the always updated one. The updated one needed constant attention ( like that child i mentioned above ) the other one was just a pleasure to be with...so i called that computer "Mistress" Now that's an easy metaphor to understand how one can drift off subject; isn't it?

Sunshine came softly through my a-window today
Could've tripped out easy a-but I've a-changed my ways....What update or 'program' is it?neljan,

An unexplainable thing happened after allowing my automatic updater to be available to notify me when updates were available. The first and only update that seemed to be available for the longest time was the one I mentioned and didn't want: an MS program that wanted to monitor, download and install updates automatically. I did not want to install and THEREFORE grant " I accept...." MS that much authority. ( is it any wonder that there is such a conflict between MAC and PC users??? )

I would like to choose what gets downloaded and know as much about the program as I can from forums such as this one ( Thanks for a great site!!! ) or other basic searches with Google or other search engines and from user groups which I joined and go to on a regular basis.

MS continued over time making it impossible to get other updates unless one allowed this BOT program to send what I considered to be TOO MUCH INFORMATION about me to them just to get a few updates that would in theory make my PC experience better...updates that I might desperately need or want but in a way I was being hindered by MS's scheme to allow this bot to monitor me and gather information to send back to MS. Inorder to get other things that I may need or want MS was holding me hostage demanding that I download and install this program in order to get others.

In the cyber-cafe something happened once I changed the shield from RED to YELLOW. I did not chose to download that program. But somehow it must have downloaded itself. Things that were not so good before are worse now. However I was given a list of updates, and important updates at that..7 of them of which I chose 6.

The program I did not download is IE 7.

As I mentioned in another post, at the cyber-cafe where that bot downloaded itself I started getting that message every time I tried to turn my computer off. IEexplorer.exe is running and needs to be shut down before turning your computer off. ( it doesn't use those words exactly but in essence that is what it is telling me. It also says that if I chose "END NOW" I may lose unsaved information. Than you very much for reminding me about that but NOTHING is open and in need of saving before ending that program and message. What troubles me about that is that I've been using firefox instead of IE6 except to look at the downloads ( MS reminded me when I went to their download page that I needed to be using IE in order to look at and download updates. And every since I used it that one day at the cafe' I can not shut down my computer without having that IE message. And BTW, I have to hit "END NOW" 4 to 6 times before the computer will finally turn off.

If I have to END NOW 6 times before my computer will actually turn off then I wonder if there is more than 1 IE.exe running in some way on my computer even though I do not use it. That is why I did not want to allow that program to be downloaded on my computer. It's ironic isn't it that the suggestion from Saviour was to update and now the update is cause problems that didn't exist before?

KKKryptonite

I know what you're saying & I fully understand your reasons & agree with your principles for not wishing to be forced into this 'upgrade' but if it were me, I'd have to just save myself a little bit of agro & upgrade to whatever MS wants - Afterall, it is a Microsoft system that you're using & obviously everything is intergrated together in some way.

Hopefully someone will know a way in which to help you. I know there's more to Microsoft than meets the eye, it probably is some kind of spybot, but unless you're doing something bad then I'd just play nice with them.

Or, you could always change your O.S...?Sorry it took this long to answer. The worst part of taking this long is the lost piece of paper with the exact name on it.

In the mean-time i found a way to download other updates that were kept hidden in a manner of speaking until i downloaded AND Installed this MS program that "gathered information". If it sounds paranoid not to want MS to install anymore than is already "in here" Gathering and reporting back. It's not even necessary to be a fan of SciFi to realize that once permission is granted to such a device (program, instruction) who's to say how malicious such a thing can be\come if hacked or worse yet, be taken over in the name of "National Security".
We "the people" of the USA are IMHO much for vulnerable now.....our "rights" under the Constitution ( for all the yanks and visitors as well to this nation country which i went to war over.

Unless you have lived in a country that is always watching every move you make it's perhaps more DIFFICULT to appreciate real "freedom" to do what you want as long as it does not break the law.
When i heard Mary Ann from Gilligan's Island got bused for possession of 3 joints after a wire tape found out that " she is a user " i realized that THEY really ARE listening to every thing and reading this post too.
And so it goes.....

There is no Operating System installed, or what?is there an os on it or are you UPGRADING to a better version?no os, this is a new comp. built from scratch. the error message i get is: IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUALIRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL error would indicate either overheating (new build? I've updated windows, and all the drivers I can think of. everything is firmly attached inside as well, so I'm at a loss for an explanation. Was thermal paste used in assembling the CPU/heatsink ?

Solve : Windows won't even start-up in safe mode anymore!?

Answer»

Hi,

I apologise in advance if I have posted this in the wrong forum.

Anyway, yesterday a blue DOS screen suddenly appeared saying that it had intervened to prevent further damage to my computer. It displayed the error message :

STOP: 0x0000000A (0x41F9458C, 0x00000002, 0x00000001, 0x80669158)

and said that it had dumped all physical memory.

I re-booted in SAFE mode, ran a virus scan and removed the 3 items which were infected. This seemed to sort out the problem and the computer ran normally for the rest of the day.

Today, however, the same thing HAPPENED and the same blue DOS screen appeared. Again, I re-booted in safe mode and ran a virus scan. This time the virus scan was unable to complete due to an error so I downloaded another virus removal tool from the McAfee website. When running this scanner the blue DOS screen appeared again. Now I am unable to even start up in safe mode (it just FREEZES on the DOS screen or loads Windows, only to instantly display an error box informing me that an error occurred and it is going to re-boot).

I am running Windows XP on a 3GHz Dell PC with 1GB RAM and a fully updated version of McAfee Internet Security Suite 2008.

Please help!!

IainHello!

Have you installed software/hardware recently?

Do you have your XP cd?Are you sure that error message is TYPED correctly ?Hi,

1) I have not installed anything other than a new wireless printer (about 8 days ago with no problems)

2) Yes I have still got all the original system software

3) I did type in the error message correctly, BUT I have since realised that the numbers in brackets change with each new error message.

Do you think I'll need to re-format my hard drive? (I have installed new hard drives before, so should not be a problem. Just a bit of a pain!)

Thanks for your feedback.

IainIt's most likely a driver issue:
See Heresame thing happened to me and that blue screen also made me the computer unable to boot. I still the problem until now. And even post a topic here asking for suggestions. I manage to boot by disconnecting two of my hard disk and boot again when disk boot failure appeared at start up. Im doing it EVERY now and then when the blue screen appear. I am planning also to format and install a fresh windows but i am not sure if that is really the solution because i just reformat and install windows last week.Hello kardels!

Please start your own topic and include your computer specifications so that it will get complete attention of members.

Solve : Uninstalling Explorer with Dos command??

Answer»

Hi, anyone:

My laptop started kicking me off of Explorer, so I reluctantly went in and downloaded all of the updates I'd been avoiding -- all of them except Version 7, which believe it or not "BROKE" my HP scanning software on my desktop (which is why I stayed with 6 on the laptop). Anyway, I wasn't surprised to see that a windows VERIFICATION tool was one of the updates being installed, figuring that was probably why I'd been getting kicked off.

However, after the installation, 0not only will explorer not open, neither will AOL.. That's all I've tried re getting to other programs. I can't even get the control panel open. It won't even send an error report, and I can't access my wireless network either.

My original thinking was that I could uninstall explorer, then use AOL dial-up to either REINSTALL explorer or just GIVE up and go to MOZILLA. Now, that's out of the question. I can, however, get to a c: prompt. Does anyone have any idea how to uninstall explorer from the c: prompt, whether that would actually be a good idea -- or what else to try instead?

Kind regards,
Jan
[emailprotected]It is not possible to remove internet explorer, it is a core part of windows.
AOL will not work if internet explorer does not work.
You can not send error reports without a working internet connection.
The windows verification check is required before you can download updates.
The fact you can not enter control panel leads me to belive there is something wrong with your system files. You may be able to access it from safe mode (boot while pressing F8)
What kind of wireless device are you using? USB, PCMCIA, or internal? Are you using the wireless software that came with the device? Do you have other computers connected to the router that are able to browse normally? Is encryption enabled? Answers to these questions will help us to solve your problem. Wireless internet problems are generally caused by incorrect software or configuration.

Solve : Just formated my pc and only somethings seem to work?

Answer»

If you would like to run a diagnostic scan of your hard disk(HDD) download this free program

http://www.download.com/-1-TuffTEST-Lite/3000-2086_4-8596189.html

If the your computer has an unusual CLICKING NOISE chances are the HDD has failed. They usually start at about $80, installation can be much more DEPENDING on the laptop.

If the HDD tests good, then more info would be useful. Are you using restore CDS, a recovery partition, or a windows CD? Was the computer having PROBLEMS prior to formatting? Where are your drivers located?

A chkdsk/r from the command line shouldn't hurt either.

Solve : Installed New Motherboard and now computer wont work?

Answer»

My father in law gave me a computer of his because he couldn't get it to work. Apparently he had been have difficulties with it and had someone install a new power supply and mothereboard. And now it wont start up. Someone told me that we no longer have a operating system installed if we got a new motherboard. I have tried writting the hard drive to zeros before running the XP restore disks.
The computer is a T2200 e-machine. It has an AMD Athlon XP processor, 100 GB HARDDRIVE and 512 MB DDR. The new motherboard is a 741GX-M from ECS EliteGroup. I NEED HELP and have no idea what 2 do now!!
I can provide any info you need that I haven't given (at least if you tell me where 2 get it from )

Any ideas would be greatly appricated!!!how many watts is the power supply and is it sufficent for your computer?where would I find that on the power supply?power Supply

AC Input 115v/230v 10a/6a 60/50 Hz
DC Putput {+3.3v} {+5v} {+12v} {-12v} {-5v} {-5vsb}

400w Max Combined Watts

{28a} {30a} {25a} {1.0a} {0.9a} {2.5a}

400 watts

That's everything on the power supplyThats a normal PSU ...... you have to make sure all is clipped into your board , i personally think something like this is near impossbile to solve over the internet ........ go to a trust worthy shop and they will get it all up and running for you ......

If it doesnt turn on its been plugged in wrong or you havent plugged everything in.... i dont think anythings at fault other than a few out of place wires...i'm sorry I didn't mean it wouldn't turn on. The power comes on and first it takes like 10 min to dectect the IDE drives and then it runs through some system info and ends up saying

"System Boot Error, Please insert system disk and press enter"

we've done that and ran a XP restore disk through and it said it was done and to restart the computer and when it restarts it does exactly the same thing. Ove and over I can't get it to do anything ELSE OK theres your answer .... how many times have you actually tried reinstalling x-p ..... do it again ...... and make sure your set to boot from cd and also make sure you choose the longer format rather than the faster way....... also check in BIOS your new motherboard has been set up to boot from your primary harddrive .... you can do this by pressing F8 or f2 rapidly upon boot ..... you cant just install a new mobo and think everythings going to work its a bit more tricky .... make sure all settings look ok in BIOS ..... dont change anything your not to familar with .... once done ... reboot....

have a read of this as well > http://www.basichardware.com/howto_install_a_motherboard.htmlshould the restore disc work because someone told me if you change the MB then you need to purchase an full XP disc retail and can't even use the retail UPGRADE discsorry change the MB i dont quite understand? what did you change ....The motherboard and the power supplyBorrow a full XP install disk and try it, if it works then go & buy one.

Solve : MS Outlook Express password?????

Answer»

Hey all

Im a bit of a pc novice so forgive me.

Ive set up my MS Outlook Express to comunicate with AOL and everything is fine.I've NOTICED though that you dont really need the AOL password to read the e-mails through Outlook. As my pc is used by people other than myself,is there anyone that knows if I can set a password to ACTUALLY LOG on to Outlook???

Cheers
WillYep, you can do'er. Stroll over to http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/community/columns/passwords.mspx and scroll down to Identity Passwords.

The other solution, if you're using Win XP, would be to CREATE a separate user account for other users and password your account so that only you can use it.

Solve : Windows XP Drag/drop & downloader virus problem?

Answer»

hi,
i hv a dual booting system with win xp & win 98se.
recently in Win xp my norton antivirus 2005 has started DETECTING "downloader" in windows system 32/i.it tends to remove the threat but sometimes it again crops on restarting the system.also i am not being able to cut ,copy, paste, drag, drop after connecting to the internet.
i DOWNLOADED the the latest AVG antispyware & antivirus & ran them after booting into Safe Mode.but the above mentioned problem is persisting.i also ran the blaster worm check by running the symantec tool but blaster was not detected.i do not want to format the system.please help if possible.
When you ran your scans in safemode did you turn off system restore ? ?
Warning: You will lose all your restore POINTS doing so.
You could also DLoad and RUN Stinger and see if it removes it.i agree with patio with trying other anti VIRUS and spam programs. You might like to try system mechanic. It cleans your computer of everyhting. tmps, malware, spyware and finds lots of nasties. It repairs any files which are infected.

Solve : Laptop works.... laptop doesnt?

Answer»

With a failed FLOPPY drive you usually get an FDC error. In this situation I'm LEANING more towards the HDD. Are you able to boot to safe or is it the same result? It doesnt even start up and show any errors. I think it is the floppy because that is the first thing that comes on and it turns off STRAIGHT away. No fans or cd drives come on. HDD doesnt turn on either. I have removed it and tried to start it up but it does the same thing. Is the floppy light on all the time ? ?
If so the data cable is hooked up backwards.
You could also try unhooking it completely and see if the machine boots properly...
If so the drive has failed and needs to be replaced.Quote from: programming_pat on August 26, 2007, 04:50:09 PM

I have rung the gey who sold it to us and he said he will look at it next computer swapmeet in Ballarat.

I would actually wait to see what this guy has to say about it...since he did sell it to you. Any more "monkeying" with it...may, in fact, void the warranty...if there is still a warranty on it.

To be perfectly honest with you...you bought a second hand machine...it's running a PIII and only has 128MB of RAM and a 6GB HD.

I can pretty much guarantee a hardware issue...and since you tossed it on the couch...there's the strong possibility you damaged the HD you currently have installed in it.

There's probably other issues going on with it as well.

Mind if I ask what you paid for this...in US Dollars?I paid $170 Australian dollars. I dont know what it is in us. He gave us a one month warranty. My mums friend hasent had a look at it but i have rung the guy who sold it to us and he said that he will have a look at it. I have called up the guy who sold it to us and he said that he would look at it at the next Ballarat Computer swapmeet fo us. Good...I hope he fixes it for you...free of charge.he should, i am going to borrow a laptop from one of my friends in the meantime.

Much appreciated,

Here's the message from my grateful mom:

I think you're on to something here.

You COULD ask admin why it's being blocked and ask them to fix it.
You could go and get it through a proxy.
You could find the file from a site that's not being blocked.
You could get the file via an different isp.
You could get a third party to download it and then GIVE it to you.

Lots of POSSIBILITIES here. Quote from: patio on September 16, 2007, 06:33:13 PM

Solve : Windows 98SE won't install?

Answer»

OK, I tried to install windows 98 on my PC because XP was giving me big problems. And everytime I install it nothing will boot I'll wait at the boot screen forever (literally). I then read an article that Windows 98SE doesn't support anything more than 512MB of RAM, well I've got 1024MB. Is there any way to get around this without pulling out memory sticks? (I've had really bad problems with RAM before and I don't want to mess this PC up.)Will it boot into safe mode? The article is misleading.

Win98 will run with up to 2G of RAM...however you may need to get back to 512M for it to act properly enough to configure it to handle your 1G.

Re-install with 512 and see if it starts....if so here's the info from MS:

listed above contains more than 512 megabytes (for example, 768
megabytes) of physical memory (RAM), you may experience one or more of
the following symptoms:
You may be unable to open an MS-DOS session (or command prompt) while
Windows is running. Attempts to do so may generate the following error
message:
There is not enough memory available to run this program.
Quit one or more programs, and then try again.
The computer may stop responding (hang) while Windows is starting, or
halt and display the following error message:

Insufficient memory to initialize windows. Quit one or more
memory-resident programs or remove unnecessary utilities from your
Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files, and restart your computer.
CAUSE
The Windows 32-bit protected-mode cache driver (Vcache) determines the
maximum cache size BASED on the amount of RAM that is present when
Windows starts. Vcache then reserves enough memory addresses to permit
it to access a cache of the maximum size so that it can increase the
cache to that size if needed. These addresses are allocated in a range
of virtual addresses from 0xC0000000 through 0xFFFFFFFF (3 to 4
gigabytes) known as the system arena.

On computers with large amounts of RAM, the maximum cache size can be
large enough that Vcache consumes all of the addresses in the system
arena, leaving no virtual memory addresses available for other
functions such as opening an MS-DOS prompt (creating a new virtual
machine).
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, use one of the following methods:
Use the MaxFileCache setting in the System.ini file to REDUCE the
maximum amount of memory that Vcache uses to 512 megabytes (524,288
KB) or less. For additional information about how to use the
MaxFileCache setting, click the article number below to view the
article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
108079 32-Bit File Access Maximum Cache Size

Use the System Configuration utility to LIMIT the amount of memory
that Windows uses to 512 megabytes (MB) or less. For additional
information about how to use the System Configuration utility, click
the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft
Knowledge Base:
181966 System Configuration Utility Advanced Troubleshooting Settings

Reduce the amount of memory that is installed in your computer to 512 MB or less.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft
products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
MORE INFORMATION
Vcache is limited internally to a maximum cache size of 800 MB.

This problem may occur more readily with Advanced Graphics Port (AGP)
VIDEO adapters because the AGP aperture is also mapped to addresses in
the system arena. For example, if Vcache is using a maximum cache size
of 800 MB and an AGP video adapter has a 128-MB aperture mapped, there
is very little address space remaining for the other system code and
data that must occupy this range of virtual addresses. "

BTW this cracks me up everytime i've read it because if you have over 512M of RAM on Win98 guess what the machine tells you ? ?

You guessed it...an "out of memory " error message !!Hi I am having the same problem. Getting the windows can't initialize not enough memory crap. I went into the system.ini and didn't see a maxfilecache setting at all but them I saw a Vcache area with nothing under it so I just added the line maxfilecache=524,288 and of course nothing worked. I also really really don't want to mess around with my memory. Any other suggestions about how to get this working?

Many thanks
kildich...

We can answer your question in another thread.Sorry I've been gone. I don't really need it anyways. I'm using Ubuntu and Wine for those oddball apps that don't have a linux equivalent. But a small install would be nice for DX9 support for video encoding and games.Did you read the article above ? ?
It can be done..."Use the System Configuration utility to limit the amount of memory
that Windows uses to 512 megabytes (MB) or less."

I do it that way.

There is 576M of ram in the Win98 computer, but Windows reports 512 now.

I ran it without that setting for ages. For an experiment, with an INTERMITTENT problem that I never did track down, I tried limiting it to 512. Didn't fix the problem. But I left it that way anyway, as I could see no difference in performance.
During all the time that I ran it with all the memory enabled in Windows, I never had a problem that I could specifically attribute to having more than 512M.

Solve : Right-click default action on drives?

Answer»

When I double click on the local drives or removable drives, it will always open in a new window.
If I right-click on the drives, the action list shows Auto, Search...,Open, Explore.
How do I revert it back to the default setting where "open" is the default action?
Thanks.
hmm..i don't see this as a THREAD
I'm not sure bout this, but i think it's auto depending on what inside the removable drive. What you mean you don't see this as a thread?

On my computer at home, the actions are: Open, Explore, Search...

The computer in my office shows: Auto, Search..., Open, Explorewhat type of drive is this happening on. Autoplay only appears on flash drives and cd/dvd drives.Quote from: Michael on September 12, 2007, 11:33:34 PM

i didn't google this problem but what i know are it's depending on what kind of data inside your removeable drive.Like my ipod, when i just format it,i just double click it to open,(because it's empty) but when there are files like mp3's,it will be autoplay with winamp.
1. Go to save mode
Note: to go to save mode press F8 before windows shows loading screen

2.open start menu open RUN type CMD go to spacific drive E.g D: HIT Enter

D:\>attrib -h -s

do this to all your drives and open every drive from start menu Run e.g open run and type D: and hit Enter then delete only a file ( Autorun.ini ) and do this to all your drives
restart your computer in normal mode then double click on your drives it will be open in the same windows
forgot to tell you that your system is infected with rose.exe it always makes a autoplay ini file whenever you try to open the drive it will be open in a new windows or it will show you openwith windows if you didn't understand what i write for you just download and run this http://www.techsupportforum.com/sect...isinfector.exe i hope it will be ok Quote from: kasrawis on September 14, 2007, 03:44:36 AM

There is no file named Autorun.ini but there are autorun.inf , autorun.PNF , and a suspicious Auto.exe

Based on the info given i'm surprised it could so easily be determined you are infected...
But carry on and follow the advice given...
kazwaris where do you get this info from ? ?While the link given by kasrawis does not work, I searched on the internet and there is suggestion to look for the rose.exe in the processes list but I do not find one in mine.

ugh. i nothing supports Fujitsu model C2210!
i hate this.
i think this laptop would be more useful as a door-stopper.

Are you saying they had no drivers AVAILABLE ? ?pretty much! i can't find any!
Yeah it happens with Mozilla and IExplorer.
I can't tell if it happens with MSWORD bc I don't have that installed on this computer.

I've been searching for a Fujitsu Lifebook C2210
nothing shows C2210!
it says it's a C2000 Series
the C2210 is the Reg No.
Product No. FPC03070AK

nothing is available that I can find.. You havent replied in a while. How are you going with it?sorry, i didn't see the second page. It's not the software so it must be a driver or hardware problemQuote from: uhhuhukno on September 12, 2007, 10:23:43 PM

Ok, first thing is the drop down lists. They are at the top of this page, there are 3 of them. What you have to do is select your product. So you want to choose Notebook Series from the first drop down list. Then you want to select the series. So you want to choose C Series from the second drop down list. Then you want to choose the model. So you want to choose C2210 from the third drop down list. Then click go. Scroll down to XP compatible drivers and there you go. Second last one is the video driver, which I believe is the driver you have been looking for.i downloaded but it didn't work right....i guess ILL try again tomorrow though..thank you!PROBLEM SOLVED!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Couldn't have done it without you guys! THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Solve : Windows Xp ,Desktop P4,can not shut down?

Answer»

I can not shut down my computer.

OS : Windows Xp
RAM : 256
Processor : P4

Whenever i try to shut down the computer RESTARTS.

Can any ONE help I have a few things you can try!
1. click on start-run-msconfig-startup tab- clear them all.. after all there the programs that run in the background. This will not disable the program from working when you want to really use them.... all you have to do is start them up yourself.

warning:donot go into the service tab at all!

2.click start-run-regedit-Hkey_Local_Machine,system,current controlset,control.
and on your right side of the pane it will say "waittokillservice..double click it and set the value data to 300

3.this is to make sure your PC doesn't restarts or at least it shouldn't.
right click my computer-go to properties-click on the advanced tab-startup and recovery tab and uncheck automatically restart and click on OK.

let me know what happen and good luck
spiderClear everything in msconfig ? ?
Have you done this in the past ? ?...if so what were the results ? ?what programs run in the background of your computer. What happens if you close these before shutting down?Quote from: spiderlucci on September 16, 2007, 01:57:33 PM

Bad idea to uncheck them all. Let spider try it first and post back. Be sure and uncheck them all. I have done this in the past and it work FINE.
when you start windows you'll notice the system clock tray.. with all the programs next to it.

if your not using it at the time.. why turn them on besides This will not disable the program from working when you want to really use them.
if you want to make yourself feel safe... you can do a few programs at a time.
I really don't think you'll have a problem anyway... let's say you disable the programs from the start-up tab from Msconfig and you want to use you norton or what ever antivirus you use .... just go to your programs and turn it on.... no problem at all.... Just make sure you don't go into service tab.

as for the rest of my tips... your fine with that.

ohh yea, all my programs from the start up tab are disable and I am fine.
Your OS will loadup faster too!

good Luck!

"I will break this done in english... why it was a good idea to do what I said.
this is why I always go into msconfig which will not hurt your computer or the programs at all.
even if it's XP compat.... some programs just fight each other.
nature of the beast... that all I can say... but, here is more info".

"there is no wrong way.. The info I gave you above was just a short cut to ease your pain and make it quicker"

Shutdown problems in Windows XP are most commonly caused by what is know in computer circles as legacy hardware - old technology components and peripherals that are not Plug and Play (PnP) devices - and software-compatibility issues.

If your computer was shutting down, but all of a sudden it won't shut down properly, or it restarts during the shutdown, if you installed any new software or drivers, remove the software via Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel, or use the ROLL Back Driver feature in the Device Manager (right-click My Computer, click Properties, click the Hardware tab, and find the device, double-click on its entry and open its Driver tab) to restore the old driver. If you discover that a driver is the cause of the problem, try downloading and installing the latest driver for the device from its manufacturer's site. If you installed any new hardware immediately before the problem occurred, obtain the latest driver file available for it in the same way. If the device still causes the problem with the latest driver installed, try a different make and model.

Goodluck!
spider

Although this method may help temporarily with his/her shutdown issue it won't help determine what the actual problem is...well, he can always go into msconfig and click the service tab... which I was trying to make sure he stay alway unless you know what your doing. check hide all Microsoft service and disable one at a time to find out which program is doing it.... also remember which ones you disable so you can set it again.

I hope this help
spiderThe problem is you are giving this advice regularly without knowing the user's level of expertise...what happens when they are unable to boot ? ?

Besides it is not a cure-all for Computer woes and should only be USED to diagnose a problem...not as a Band-Aid.Patio Do you know my expertise and are you helping
no, instead you trash me

The infomation I'm giving ... if he or she follow my instruction right..... it won't have a problem and it won't have a boot issue either.
if it does... then there is other issue going on ... big issue and it won't be my fault.

All I'm trying to do is narrow it down ... that's what most tech do.. and you can't tell me they don't.

This is not a band-aid either.... you start out with the simple things and work your way...if someone had a HD that said when booting up the computer..."NO BOOT DEVICE AVAILABLE" What would you do change the HD?... I heard some of the guys on line say.."change the HD and you would not believe who said it... but, I'm not going to talk or trash him or her.... I would at least try to repair the MBR.....now that is simple and the right protocal to do.

There is one thing I did forget to tell him/her.... check for a virus.
I seen issue like this that happen and these are the correct info to narrow it down.
Patio, what do you have... some kind of ego or you just hate me.

You should know better to ask about Msconfig....startup tab will not hurt the computer.
I guess my computer is going to have problems now
at least I'm helping

Solve : Adobe Reader programs?

Answer»

I just uninstalled Adobe Reader 8..appears to be a clean uninstall. However, when I did an "Adobe" search for files, it seems I have Adobe 6 and 7 still in my computer. I uninstalled 8 because I couldn't get it to work. Am pretty sure I don't need both 6 & 7, but wonder what is the best way to get RID of one of them. I don't know what the problem is with me, but I never seem very successful when trying to read PDF files. Usually, when I try to open them, it's just a lot of Asian-looking symbols and I can't seem to convert them. I went to the Adobe site, no help, and searched here, but didn't find what I NEEDED. Can anyone help with this? Thanx. kAdobe does provide some uninstaller tools for their products...
Here is a link to their Forum with someone with a similar issue...
Hopefully this will help.

P.S. DLoad and give Foxit a try...smaller and faster...and i believe it's still FREEP_P: You are, indeed, a genius! I just got through reading that entire Adobe uninstall forum and, like 90% of those in the forum, am scared to death of dealing with the registry. I'd nearly be willing to pay for you to come to my house and "just do it"! But I do sincerely appreciate your response. Maybe when my son COMES home next, he can do it for me.If you're going to use Adobe Reader, I would uninstall all versions and then install version 8, the latest version. What do you mean by "it seems I have Adobe 6 and 7 still in my computer"? You don't know for sure whether they are installed? How can you not know?

Do you see them on the Programs menu? Do you see versions 6 and 7 listed in your Add or Remove Programs panel. If so, then remove them. Then, run CCleaner [decline the option to install the Yahoo toolbar]; run it's Windows scan and it's Issues scan. When running the Issues scan, backup the registry when prompted. Then, tell CCleaner to remove/fix all items.

Now, try installing Adobe Reader 8.I had this nearly typed & hit the wrong button ~ disappeared! In answer to your ?'s: There are no Adobe programs in "Program"; nor are there any Adobe programs in "add/remove programs" panel. But, after I uninstalled Adobe 8 and ran a "search files & folders" for "Adobe", there are numerous files that say Adobe 6 and Adobe 7. I don't know whether to just go ahead & delete those & then start with a clean install of Adobe 8 or what.

Where do I find CCleaner? You skipped over the best advice you will ever get...
Quote

P.S. DLoad and give Foxit a try...smaller and faster...and i believe it's still FREE
http://www.foxitsoftware.com/khill75462, I agree with the others' recommendation to get Foxit Reader. It's a good PDF reader and trying to solve your problems with Adobe is going to be difficult since we can't actually see what's going on with your computer. For example, when you say "after I uninstalled Adobe 8 and ran a "search files & folders" for "Adobe", there are numerous files that say Adobe 6 and Adobe 7", that really doesn't make sense. So, Foxit Reader should provide a quick and easy solution. Oh, but I did go to Foxit & couldn't find the program. I did, however, send them an email asking if it was still available. Got an auto-response, so guess I won't hear until Monday. By way of further explanation re the Adobe 8 uninstall: After I uninstalled it, I wanted to make sure that it was, indeed, uninstalled. So, I did a search in files & folders for Adobe and that's when I saw all (many, many, many) files that all seemed to be related to Adobe 6 and Adobe 7. Adobe 8, though, had been uninstalled and was no longer there. I'd be more than glad to copy that particular folder/file and let you see what I'm talking about....but be warned, there's a lot! Thanks. You can get Foxit PDF Reader here: http://www.download.com/Foxit-PDF-Reader/3000-2079_4-10313206.htmlSoybean, thank you for the link. I went there & was ready to download, the thought I'd better ask you one more question: Did you understand my last post about the search & finding the older Adobes? If they are still in my computer, will Foxit/Adobe conflict? The Adobe files are not in my start programs, nor in my add/remove programs. What do you think? I certainly don't want to make matters worse! Thanx.Foxit will not cause any issues that i know of...it is a seperate program and needs nothing from Adobe to run.
All it enables you to do is view and edit PDF documents. As patio said, you shouldn't encounter any Foxit/Adobe conflict.

On a separate note, I suggest you go ahead and install CCleaner and use it; it may remove some of the remnants of older versions of Adobe Reader you seem to have in your system. And, that's worth doing, whether you ever use Adobe Reader in that computer again or not.

CCleaner is ALSO a good tool to use for regular maintenance of your computer. It really has two main functions; it's a disk cleanup utility and also a safe registry cleaner. So, you can think of it as a computer tune-up tool. Using it regularly will help keep your system running well.

CCleaner home page is at http://www.ccleaner.com/. The standard installation includes a Yahoo toolbar but you will be able to decline that on a screen that appears soon after installation. And, we generally recommend making the choice; in other words, opt not to install the toolbar.

Once CCleaner is installed, use it's Windows and/or Applications scan to remove unneeded files from your system. And, use the Issues scan to clean Windows registry; this procedure will prompt you, at one point, to backup the registry. Do so.Thank you both so much. I've installed CCleaner and am WAITING for another download to install before running it. kThe fox-it has been installed and is working great! Thanks, all.Excellent !
Good to hear it worked out for you and thanx for letting us know...

Solve : Command Line to Restart Workstation with Yes/No?

Does ANYBODY know a COMMAND line to reboot a workstation but DISPLAYING a menu with a "reboot now" OPTION or later?

I know about the SHUTDOWN - R command, but this doesn't give the user the option to cancel the reboot if need be.

I basically want to add this line in a batch file that installs an application, then asks the user if they want to reboot now, or they can do it MANUALLY later.

No Download Manager either. Internet Explorer =/Bumped because I updated the post above this onehelp is here:
ok.. what you want to do is go to start-run-msconfig-startup tab and disable one at a time or you can disable all of them. Note: "donot go into the service tab at all" after that hit apply and ok and restart the computer... after it restarts you will see a BOX.... I forget what it says... at least word by word anyway..... there will be a little box... put a check mark so it won't display this message again.. While your OS is starting up none of your programs will load that was in the startup tab... which will make the computer load FASTER!

Let me explain:

After you sign on, the system finishes loading the system shell and then begins to load the startup programs that you have INSTALLED and also some that you have not. Often when you bring home a new computer it is filled with extra software that you do not need to be startingwhen your computer, starts up. One example of this kind of software is windows messenger.

This will only disable the programs from loading when you start up your computer.... if you need to use a program ...after you login.... lets say you have norton.. Just click on it... it will be ok!

let me know what happen

GoodLuck!

The application's vendor is indicated in the error screen.

Solve : no load of ntldr?

Answer»

I had a hard drive to crash, so I pulled out a hard drive I had never used to load the operating system onto, and I am using a different drive to load all my program files like Office, etc.

Well, the frst time I had to restart the computer during loading of Windows XP, I got the message that the NTLDR file is missing. So I went into recovery and copied the NTLDR to C: DIRECTORY. I then continued the boot and the computer booted normaly.

The second time I had to restart the PC, I got the NTLDR file is missing again. I went into recovery, copied the NTLDR to the C: directory, overwriting the NTLDR I had copied the first time. I continued the boot and the computer booted correctly. One THING that was strange is that the recovery app showed Windows loaded on the C: drive and E: drive which there is not a copy of Windows on the E: drive.

To make a long story short, every time I turn off the computer, and restart it, I have to reload the NTLDR file even THOUGH it is present.

PLEASE HELP!

Any and all advice will be greatly appreciated...

DavidNTLDR can be 'missing' for more than one reason even if the NTLDR file is in the root. See here.

Thanks for your reply.

I did a search of the forum before I started a new thread and found that post.

I tried all the FIXES posted in that thread, all to no avail.

Any other ideas?

Solve : bypassing anti-spyware?

Answer»

Ok, I have this ongoing issue with KEYLOGGING. I have ActualSpy, which is a very good program. But now, my husband installed an anti-spyware program. So now when I bring up my program, the info AUTOMATICALLY gets wiped out. Anyway, is there any way around these anti-spyware programs without changing any options directly. He would then know I messed with it if that were the CASE. But is there some way to bypass or perhaps there is a program to OVERRIDE the anti-spyware?Maybe you should stop spying on your husband instead.

Solve : Adding to a Registry Key?

Answer»

Hi there, does anybody know of an easy way to append the registry entry for a system variable?

I would like to create some sort of BATCH file or .REG file that will KEEP what's already in the system variable, but just add an entry to the end of it.

IE:
OLD PATH: %SYSTEMROOT%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem

WOULD LIKE TO ADD: O:\ORANT\BIN

NEW PATH: %SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem;O:\ORANT\BIN

Is this at all possible? Without having to manually add the path through the Control Panel - System - Advanced.....

Thanks alot,
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310516

Not to sure but that MAY help ! you can add through the registry. here's a vbscript.
Code: [Select]strKeyPath = "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment\Path"
Set objShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
strPath= objShell.RegRead(strKeyPath)
strPath = strPath & ";c:\temp"
objShell.RegWrite strKeyPath,strPath,"REG_SZ"
WScript.Quit
also, you can use reg command. type reg /? for usage.VB Script works perfectly. Thanks...

Solve : System restore issue?

Answer»

How can you do a system restore and not have an .exe program get removed? I have just INSTALLED a spyware program and don't want those to disappear like they did before. I had to reverse the restore today to get that program back, but still want to do the restore again. Is it even possible to do that-omitting certain programs such as the spyware program?Rather than restore your whole system just check your antivirus and ANTISPYWARE programs and restore your spyware from there.
I know exactly what you're going through. It's not anti-spyware, it's ActualSpy 3.0! Unfortunately, I'm having some issues with my husband. He did a system restore last night and my brand new program got removed. So I undid it today to get it back. However, the computer(desktop/wallpaper) looks as it did before, so that's why I need to do the restore once again! All of this is really quite sad, I know--but I must find out some things and need help with this.Restore it to where your husband left it then concentrate on getting your actualspy installed without it being detected.
Having 2 threads on the same problem (sort of) is going to get very confusing once a few more people jump onboard so I suggest you dump this one and stay with the other one.
I'll lock this one if you tell me to.I know it's confusing-sorry about that! That WOULD be great and pretty simple, but I would have to pay all over again to install-it's not a cheap program. There are plenty of keyloggers for free, the last one I had (just to test) was free and it was indeed invisible to antivirus and antispyware programs.Yeah, every one I looked at either only had 40 MINS of record time(for the trial) or wasn't completely invisible in one WAY or another. Maybe there is just no way around this.......I'll try and remember/find the one I tested for you.Can you not put the file on disc then wipe the computer and put it back on ?

Or... Up load it to the net then download it after wiping... ?

I am having such a bad time on the computer these days, I have "stmgr (MSXML.DLL), Runtime 53, Helpctr (MSXML.DLL), MScoree.DLL and Kernel32 errors that are preventing to even attempt to fix my computer. I have gone to sites to SEE if I can get help and when i find a site that looks good for downloading something that MAY help the Microsoft window appears stating it has incountered an error and will now shut down leaving me with an option to send error or don't send and to restart IE. I have never been so helpless as now. I can't even reinstall IE6 or even go to any help sites on the web or even on my computer help files are inexcessable.

If anyone out there can please help me I would be seriously grateful.
Thank You.

SparkyairPerhaps you should try the Firefox browser and/or reinstall Windows?
First of all, we know nothing of what operating system you are using...or any of your other PC specs...

You might want to take a look at this guide:

Malware Guide

It's a good place to start to check your system for infection and other problems. Please...read the guide carefully and if you have any questions, please post them here.

First of all, we know nothing of what operating system you are using

On the contrary, we know from the THREAD title that the OS is Windows ME ("Millenium Edition", a jazzed up version of Windows 98 from the LAST century)

See what happens when you don't pay attention...SORRY about that.

Nice description of Me, too.C'mon guys....overall it was a pretty good Century...

We just have no control how MS treats it.

First you may want to try RegCleaner.

IEradicator is an option but, I have never used it so..

Solve : opening files?

Answer»

I recently had to do a system recovery on my computer. There are a few files that I am unable to open. I get the following message:

Works cannot open........The file MAY be in use by another application, the file format may not be supported by any of the installed CONVERTERS, or the file may be corrupt.

Any way of open this DOCUMENT. Or is it gone forever!!!I would say you have corrupted the file with the system restore. WINDOWS does not do a good job of keeping backups and restore points. Were the files important?me too, could be corrupted ???for BACKUP try norton ghost / norton goback

Solve : Master Boot Record Error?

Answer»

I was trying to clean-up a Compaq 6000 2.4 512 which was showing multiple signs of having been infected. When I ran the original restore disk I got a BSD. Upon restarting the computer I got a black screen with "Master Boot Record Error - Press a key" When I press any key I get "PRESS A KEY TO REBOOT". Pressing any key then reboots the system and the same sequence starts over again.

I can access the BIOS and reset it to default. I replaced the Bios Battery with a new one. During each bootup process the indicator lights on my CD Drive and Floppy Drive flash on and then off. I am unable to get the system to startup from either the Restore CD or a Bootup Floppy. I am unable to get a dos prompt. I have played with the Device Boot Sequence in the Bios to no avail. H E L P ! ! !The problem may be a defective hard drive...or at least a damaged boot sector of the hard drive.

Do you have one you can swap for the one that is currently in this computer?

Please give us a shout back...O K - I just swapped another HDD into the box. The Bios immediately recognized and itentified the new HDD but all I can get now is a blank screen that sez "Press return to Reboot". I still cannot boot to the CD or Floppy Drives. There also is one other change, and that is that I now see the COMPAQ logo the first few seconds of the powerup which did not appear with the old disk drive in place. While waiting for another suggestion I am going to try another HDD from a working computer and see if that does anything different. The HDD I just put in has been laying around for a couple of years and I can't remember what's on it, if anything. Are these working hard drives? You may have them setting around for a reason...

If you had the makes and models of these hard drives and the data on them wasn't important...I'd go to the manufacturer's website and look for diagnostic software that would allow me to zero-fill the drive(s), partition, format and then try the clean install. Remember...you'll lose all data on the drive(s).

Keep us posted...ok.. help is on the way! ...
Repairing the master boot record on a Windows XP system takes less than 15 minutes
Here's How:
Enter Windows XP Recovery Console.

When you reach the command prompt (detailed in Step 6 in the link above), type the following and then press Enter.

fixmbrThe fixmbr utility will write a master boot record to the hard drive that you're currently using to boot into Windows XP. This will repair any corruption or damage that the master boot record may have.

Take out the Windows XP CD, type exit and then press Enter to restart your PC.

Assuming that a corrupt master boot record was your only issue, Windows XP should now START normally

Good Luck!

spiderSAVED BY THE SAVIOUR .

I have never had a HDD go bad on me before as I have always upgraded all my computers with high-capacity drives before any problems DEVELOPED. This has been a new experience for me and I appreciate the RIGHT-ON and quick response which helped me solve my problem.

THANK YOU
Grumpy, did you lose all your data? You're welcome...

Did you end up replacing or zero-filling, PARTITIONING and formatting?SuperDave

Didn't lose a thing. I've been around long enough to have learned the hard way to always backup everything before I start tinkering or notice any sign of trouble.

The Savior

The old 20GB drive that I put into the box was so old it still had WIN 98 on it. Anything of importance had long ago been transferred to a new drive so I just reformatted it and will instal the OS maybe later tonight or tomorrow. I don't know why the 1st used HDD I tried did not work, but sometime in the near FUTURE when I have the time I'll play around with it a little bit and see if I can get it to work.

The original drive (40 GB) belongs to a friend who asked for my help when problems started to appear. She is elderly (70+) and uses the computer only for playing word games and e-mail. It was only using 26% of the total 40 GB so replacing it with only a 20 GB HDD is no problem for her. Again, sometime in the near future I'll have more time to take a closer look at her original 40 GB HDD. I noticed your website and might be communicating directly with you at that time.

THANKS AGAIN

If only EVERYONE did as you just stated...the computer repair business would ne a nicer place...

If you tinker with your computer every day...you should be backing up daily.

And you're more than welcome...

Solve : locked out of computer?

Answer»

I have my a computer that was my DAUGHTERS and we had it unplugged for about a year. Well we tried to start it up the other day and when signing on it will not except any of our passwords.
Does anyone know how we can get into the computer? I can't even get on with my administrator password.
What i think has happened is that we had it unplugged for so long and all the passwords have expired.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Are you using Windows XP? Are you sure that your passwords are correct? Did you write them down?Quote from: Comp Guy on September 05, 2007, 11:04:16 PM

Are you using Windows XP? Are you sure that your passwords are correct? Did you write them down?

I am using win 2000 pro. I have always had the same passwords, and YES i have wrote them down.I am using win 2000 pro. Yes i have tried all passwords that I have wrote down. I have always used the same passwords.

Was the computer once part of a network and trying to log back into it?
Is caps lock on? Or should it be on? What about num lock? Are there numbers in your password and num lock is off? For a local machine I don't believe your password would expire, that's USUALLY a rule that is setup for a network. Do you have recovery console setup on this machine? The computer was never part of a network. the num lock is on and should be. cap lock is off like it should be.
i don't think that that computer has a recovery console SET up on it. has anyone else used the computer? does anyone else know the password?

EDIT: OOPS!
hmm... sorry lolonly my daughter and I have used the computer and have the passwords. I am pretty sure the passwords have expired. i need to know how to get into the computer when that happens.

thanksApparently they are set to expire by default after 42 days in W2000 stand alone machines according to the following article. It does not give a solution to expired passwords though.

http://www.answersthatwork.com/Download_Area/ATW_Library/Win2000/Win2K___2-Changing_Logon_Passwords_settings.pdf

A possible trick to try might be to go into the BIOS on start up and set the date back a year to see if it unexpires your password. The only thing i could suggest if this doesn't work is to reinstall W2000
Well I guess you learn something new everyday. I didn't know that about the passwords.

There are programs out there that can bypass the password, however with the password being expired I would guess they may not work. As it's as though there isn't a password setup. Is it prompting you to enter a new password? If it's not prompting you for a new password, try not putting in a password at all.Well I tried this and it doesn't work. So I guess off to the computer repair place I go.

Thanks to all .You could remove the hard drive and put it in another computer. Then take the files you want off it and reformat it. password expired
can it be

Solve : Video/graphics card not working???

Answer»

wasn't sure what kind of problem this was so i put it in Microsoft Windows, i have XP, and everytime i try to play a game a message pops up SAYING either, plugin not ready, or video graphics card not detected, no hardware acceleration found, or check your video/graphics driver.... something like that.
I checked Run: Dxdiag and it says
the display device is N/A,
the main driver is vga.dll
version 5.01.2600.0000,
mini vdd: vga.sys,
VDD: N/A,
DDI version: unknown.
the three directx features (____ acceleration) are Not available.
Any ideas what could be wrong and how i can fix itYou could DLoad and run a program called EVEREST Home...have it run a report and save it to a text file.
This program will tell you exactly what hardware is in the machine.
Then copy and paste the video info here and we'll help you track down the drivers.
It sounds like corrupted or missing drivers which is not too tough to fix...

Let us know. Here are the canned step by step instructions.

Download, unzip, install and run Everest Home Edition
Everest

Select Computer>Summary from the left hand screen.
RIGHT click in the right hand screen & select Copy All
Paste the details in here.what kinda hardware do you have in that case ?
What video card are you using ?

The more info the better on finding out the crappy windows error remarks, was this a problem before ?

Solve : window xp pro installation problems.?

Answer»

ok i had WINDOWS xp HOME install on my computer but then i decided to install pro. so i switched hard drives before installing pro. i tried multiple times and kept having failures, so i swiched back to my original hard drive. it still doesn't want to install on old drive. i tried about 5 different cds. then i switched CD rom drives. still don't work i turned off bios shadowing/cacheing. it partions fine no problem. copying files i GET some errors like failed so i retry and then it goes.... I get through that then it boots up to device installation. sometimes it gives me errors and it completely stops. sometimes i try different disks it works farther, but gives me errors farther on.

what else can i try? from what your telling me.... it might be the cd itself

if you setup xp pro right by formating it and all. it's got to be the cd.

contact Microsoft about this problem and if I'm right they will send you a new cd for free.

goodLuck!
spiderTest your RAM
http://www.memtest86.com/download.htmlOn top of the excellent advice above it sounds as you have also made some changes to the BIOS...try re=setting it back to it's default values after FOLLOWING the suggestions above...

Solve : Resinstalling OS from Manufacturer's disk?

Answer»

Please help...my old COMPUTER died. I purchased another computer-used. The used computer had its hard drive wiped clean. All of my prior systems have been new and came with Windows (whatever version) already installed. I have all of the prior manufacturer's RESTORE disks from the older/dead computers. I also have all of my Windows documentation/certificates of authenticity from my previous computers.

I would like to install my COPY of Windows from my deceased computer (Compaq) onto this new computer with the wiped hard drive (Gateway). Everytime I try to load the disk onto the Gateway, I get an ERROR message stating that "this is not a compaq computer".

Is it possible to just pull the OS off the Compaq Quick Restore disk and install it onto the Gateway? I have formatted the hard drive and partitioned off new drive space. After that, I'm at a loss. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!!! AFAIK no. WITHOUT a restore partition on your hdd the restore disks you have are no good. Think you will have to procure a full OS cd.

But wait, others may be able to assist you.so,you want to have your stuff back again uh?try make the older hard drive as a slave?have you?The manafacturers disk you tried has been programmed to only work on the brand of computer that it came with. i agree with using the other hdd as a slave. It also adds extra storage to the computer you are currently using
