Solve : Please help me fix this.?

Answer»

I have a Dell running XP and when you turn it on only the backround picture comes up. There is no start button for desktop folders just the picture. I can get to the task manager but do not know where to go from there. I will try to search the forum for this same question with any answers to it but wanted to post incase I don't find any.
ThanksCan you TELL us when this started happening? Did you download/install/remove anything before it started to malfunction? Can you start in safe mode?I keep getting this error on my screen on my EMachine Computer and I have Windows XP with 2.60GHz and 40GB and 256Mb capability. The error says :"Cannot determine capture window resolution. You must run the configuration program to set the video settings". I have tried running a configuration program and it didn't help. What can I do to fix this error?Quote from: Motherof3 on September 02, 2007, 02:12:44 PM

If you get to the task manager, Click File, then New Task. Type in explorer.exe and HIT enter. That will get your start button and taskbar up.

Then go to Start, Run and type regedit.

The value for this key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Should be shell="explorer.exe"dbroghammer,

It's usually best to start a new topic so your problem can recieve the proper attention.
Trying to SOLVE 2 different issues in one topic just gets confusing. Thanks for answering I was not able to get back on the computer until now.

Before the problem started my younger son was restoring the computer to a different date. He did this quite a few times for about a week or so and sometimes a couple times a day. I don't know if this caused anything but that's the only thing I can think of. He was having trouble connecting to a game he plays online.

I tried what was written above and the start menu does not open, I can get to my documents but when I try and open anything after a minute or so it say not responding. I cannot get to the start menu or open much at all.

When I turn on the computer it says select user then it says loading then the backround picture comes up and then nothing.

ThanksCan you get the start menu and desktop icons to come up with the explorer.exe command? No, I can get to my documents but when I try to open most things I get either choose a program to open or cannot access.

I don't know if this helps or not my system is
Intel Pentium 4 processor 3.0GHZ
512MB DDR SDRAM at 400MHZ
128MB DDR NVidia GeForce FX 5200 graphics card
80GB 7200 RPM Ultra ATA Hard Drive.

I tried to start in safe mode and restore to last known WORKING point and it did nothing. System restore opens a white screen nothing loads. My son SAID he shut down and restarted the computer and when it started up the start up and desk top icons were gone. He swears he did nothing to it before shutting it down. But I do know he was restoring it a lot before this all happened.

Thanks

Solve : Change computer model?

Answer»

I LOST my recovery disk for my laptop (toshiba) I got a new one from toshiba but it was for a different model, they dont have my model as it came from the USA. Is there a way of making my computer think it is a different model?
Thanks for any feed back.
David Look HERE for your model and see if you can find ANYTHING useful. They may have sent you disk for a model sold only in Japan.I got my laptop in USA back in 2004 while I was over there for work but now that I am home in Australia. The model I got was not sold here and Toshiba Austraila sold me a disk for a different model when I told them about this they told me that I would have to ring Toshiba in the US, I have been able to find an email for Toshiba USA.What model Toshiba do you have?satellite A65-s126Contact Toshiba

I'll also see what I can find as far as recovery MEDIA GOES...UPDATE:

You may run into a little trouble when it comes to finding recovery software for your Toshiba...due to its age.

A recommendation would be to decide what Operating System your computer can handle and install it.

If you have problems finding drivers for your computer, you can locate them here.

Good luck! Thanks for the help. I am looking at getting an OS from ebay.

Solve : I LOST ABOUT 8,000 EMAILS FROM MY OUTLOOK EXPRESS?

Answer»

Ihave windows xp. I was left with about 1,500 emails and all my sub files were left in tact..

the computer GUY cannot find those emails ANYWHERE!

There does not seem to be any sign of corruption that he could see..also the emails were from various years..not just from say 2007.

Any ideas welcome, or any links where I can find out very specific instructions to do my own search would be GREAT. I know my guy has done his best, and he is baffled.

thanks
AJD24If you think the data has been deleted or corrupted, you could try one of many data recovery service PROVIDERS. Here's one that looked good: (search for data recovery services)

XP Pro + SP2, IE70, MSN 8.1, Sygate, AVG both, 4.2Ghz, 2048RAM...Spybot, SUPERANTISPYWARE....(give a clean machine...) but I have keyboard and mouse as remote controlled... If it's wireless try replacing the BATTERIES and moving your cordless phone to a new location...
If it's not try replacing the mouse...no change in behaviour...the extra is that after a LOT of ringingsounds and oscillating websites, the IE70 says goodnight...and the MS message comes: had to cancel ETC etc, please REPORT...useless

Using Win2000. Any ideas of what's causing this & how to correct? Thanx. It's from an invalid path to that application. Are you scheduling it to run a shortcut? If so check the path to make sure it is the correct one to the application itself.Run a shorcut? You mean from the desktop or SOMETHING? No, it's just under the routine systems programs, task scheduler. I don't know how to check the path. The task manager runs my other tasks fine ~ it's just the two. I had 3-4 pages of the same thing that I showed as errors. I had it scheduled to run at a certain time for several months! Never checked back to see if it did until YESTERDAY. Apparently, it didn't, huh? Even when I try to give the command for it to run "once", as in right now, it won't run. I'm very, very techno ignorant, so if there are 10 steps, can't assume that any idiot knows the first 4 and start with 5 in explaining. I use my computer mainly for FUN, but do try to keep it MAINTAINED. Any further instructions? Thanks. KWhat you can do is go here and see if they may know why their product won't run in the scheduler. Also, can you run Error Smart manually? Can you just DOUBLE click on the program and have it run? Try the same thing for the Regclean as well and let us know if they do run or not. That way we can narrow it down to a scheduling issue.

Solve : Hardware profiles/User accounts?

Answer»

My questions are pretty simple.
Exactly what do hardware PROFILES and user accounts govern?
It's not something I've messed around with very much so excuse my ignorance please.
For example: If I had TWO hardware profiles, call them A and B, and I booted up with profile A and installed a driver for a mouse, if I then booted with profile B would the driver for the mouse still be installed for that profile?
And user accounts: some programs have an option during setup to install for only one user. If they don't, is there a way to uninstall it for user C but still have it installed for user D?
Settings: are all the settings global, ie across hardware profiles and user accounts, or are they all independent?

I hope these questions make SENSE, and I hope that someone can clarify the situation for me.

Thanks in advance.
Calum. Can't answer all your questions but I can give a few of them a shot.

Not to my knowledge. When you install a piece of software for "all users" it just means the shortcuts will be PLACED in the All Users folder, making them visible to all users.

Depends on the setting ... I believe all the settings that have to do with look and feel of windows is on a per user basis. While others such as the ones in the Group policy editor can be global. The settings for your NIC are also global as far as I know. The mouse should work in bot and if it doesnt you would have to install it again for that profile i think...?OK, it looks complicated.
And if I don't know exactly what will change between profiles, I can't be bothered to spend all my time finding out what changes and what doesn't.
Thansk for your help guys, I think I'll just stick with my 1 hardware profile and 1 user ACCOUNT.

Solve : Error message when trying to open email message in Outlook Inbox?

Answer»

I was working w/ my email earlier, and got an error message saying Outlook couldn't open the email message already in my Inbox, and that I should quit all email applications and restart Outlook. When I tried to do that, I got a message box saying,

"Outlook could not open the file containing the folders used to send and retrieve email messages, create appointments, and open the address BOOK. Please select from the following options:
Create a new personal folders file
Open an EXISTING personal folders file
OK Cancel"

I use Microsoft Office 2000 Professional, if that MATTERS. Any ideas what to do? Thanks for any help! I don't want to have to reload Microsoft Office if I don't have to!Read this ARTICLE http://discussions.virtualdr.com/archive/index.php/t-181240.html

Solve : Can't Find .mbx file - help please?

Answer»

Hi

I am using Windows 2000 and this Site's online help tells me to backup my Outlook Express messages by locating the .mbx file and backing it up. I did a search and one doesn't exist.

Specifically, I am about to upgrade 2000 to XP and I wanted to keep all my messages and folders and address book intact. Is there a way to do this? I have already backed up the address book.

Thanks!

Jeff???My first post and no "WELCOME" or even a reply with answers

gfOh, sorry! Welcome! Congratulations on waiting about 2.5 hours before whining that nobody answered.

Let me clue you in on how this forum works. People post questions which are read by other people, and if ANYBODY (a) knows the answer and (b) feels like answering, they do so. Very often people who do not satisfy CONDITION (a) will answer anyway. Sometimes nobody at all will answer a query for days or weeks or ever. Sad, but there it is. One way to minimise the number of helpful answers and maximise the number of wise-a*s replies (like this one) is to come over all whiny and moany.

I can tell you that there is a very simple reason why you cannot find any mbx files. A little light Googling will tell you that reason.

Thanks for showing me how impressive the members are here at this Site.

Thanks for showing me how impressive the members are here at this Site.

We AIM to please. For those interested in an answer:

Open Outlook Express
Tools menu
Options
Maintenance
Store Folder
Copy the url LINK and paste in a browser.
All of the hidden Express files will be there for your backup pleasure (except for the .wab address book)

To backup address book, simply open up the Outlook Express Folder in Program files and it should be called Default

That's it!

gfIt's only Outlook Express 4 in Windows 98 that used mbx files - the version in Windows 2000 used dbx files.

Solve : Started w/a trojan, now i'm in o'er my head?

Answer»

I'll start at the beginning.
Compaq Presario 2200 notebook (2231US)
Windows XP SP2
Intel Celeron 1.3Gz
1Gb ram

Started to have problem w/ it running real slow/almost frozen.
TaskMgr showed qttask.exe at 99%

Googled and found a supposed answer.
INSTALLED trial version of trojan hunter, which would stop it, but It would come right back on the next start up.

Twice it froze when norton was trying to scan 550 outgoing emails that weren't mine. I'm assuming this is the job of the virus that HIT me... a MASS emailer?

Ran Hijack this and clicked fix for the like qttask.exe at boottime. That worked once.
Installed Kapersky 6.0 & ran, which found a *censored* of a lot of threats (alot I think were already in a dir quarantined by norton)

Now it's worse. Comp won't restore (restore window comes up for less than 1 sec & disappears) and now taskmgr shows AVP.EXE ranging from 75 to 99% and qttask.exe is no longer in the list.
I found that avp.exe is part of Kaspersky, but has it gone ROGUE?

Was thinking about starting over with a complete wipe & reinstall, but windows still boots & runs until it gets slowed to a freeze.

Any advice as to what my next move should be would be appreciated beyond words.Update: I shut down Kaspersky and about 2 MIN later the AVP.EXe went away and taskmgr showed usage at near 0%. Still can't restore and I'm assuming that the AVP.EXE was being kept busy by something and not the real problem.

Just in case It'll help I've included a Hijack file:

Also clicked fix for the hijack files that matched the string(s) that were pointed out by the prev post and the info on the symantec site.

I also found and deleted the registry entries that matched those strings.

Are the lines O3 & O4 okay? The first seems to be connected to the Adobe updater, but then the file I took out seemed connected to the symantec entry.

Oh, and any idea why I still cant open the restore window? Once everything is straightened out I would like to set a new restore point.

Is there a registry cleaner that will reset my prev values before this issue, or is it particular to my machine and its apps?

Again, a thousand thanks for your opinions, experience is everything!Have you backed up the registery previously. It would be a lot easier to format and do a clean install of windows, rather than trying to get rid of the viruses.03 and 04 are matters for you to decide on but I like to keep them to a minimum.
http://hometown.aol.co.uk/JRMC137/hjttutorial/tutorial.htm
It looks like you are running 2 antivirus programs and if this is true then disable one of them as they sometimes conflict.
BTW, AVG Antispyware will stop realtime protection after the 30 day trial period.
Ccleaner Slim is a good safe and fast registry cleaner, give it a try.
Run the cleaner and also scan for issues.

Solve : Can't move icon in dektop OS XP?

Answer»

can any one HELP me i can't move desktop icons i'm using OS XP
they are block when i try to move the i con from 1 direction to anther the sign of the pointer is BLOCKED

thank you in ADVANCE...!!! Are you trying to move them from one spot on the desktop or to another folder? If it's to another folder, do you have the permissions to write to that folder? Is this a home computer or a work computer?Kbm has a point there... and I in case you're at a home PC... are you trying to move the icons to a folder in another device/volume?

why don't you try CUT and PASTE instead of MOVING/DRAGGING?If he doesn't have the write permission it won't make a difference. Kasrawis, you need to clarify where you are trying to move these icons. Once you answer our questions then we can help answer yours.i'm admin of my PC and i have full permission to everthing i just want to move Icons from one spot to anther in desktop they are locked i can't move them
it is only being delete and copy cute but can't move them its not the problem of auto arrange i was checking a web site suddenly it happens and no spyware of virus infected cos i have AVG professional with MS anti Spyware they are full updated i know if i restore my system it will be normal back i want to fix it without restoring my PC

thank you

guy for your replies Right click active desktop uncheck lock desktop items... i did check active desktop everything is ok any salution ?

can anyone tell me the spacific cure ?Can you tell us exactly what's HAPPENING? What exactly are you doing with these icons?finally i restored my PC and now everything is working i can move all icons anywhere to my desktop now i just wanted i salution with out restoring

thank you GUYS anywayI hope you did a backup of everything that you wanted to keep. Was it that important to move your desktop icons that you had to do a system restore? You should have given us a little more time, that way we could have potentially found you a solution and that would go to helping anyone else out that may experience this problem. However, it's good that you have it fixed and that everything is ok now.

Solve : XP Freeze Up?

Answer»

I am PRETTY much a Computer Idiot but I try Real Hard. Bought a 1993 DELL Dimension 2200 that a guy was having trouble with. It was slow slow. It came with no Disks. I reloaded XP using another XP Disk I had. Man it ran like a new computer. Got on net through MSN but it wouldnt let me do some things, MUSIC, videos. Said I needed SP2. Downloaded all updates and SP2. Now it powers on and starts up Great. Works for about 2 minutes and FREEZES up. Looks great but cant do a thing. Opened it in Safe Mode but really didnt know what to do to help myself. I am afraid that I am learning just enough to be dangerous. This is my back up PC as I have another Great Dell that gives me no problems. I run a small Ebay Biz and occasionally need a 2nd PC. Any ideas ? ThanksDoes it freeze in Safemode? Have you run any scans for viruses and spyware? Thanks SD No it did fine in Safe Mode and it wont stay unfrozen long enough for me to run anything. It doesnt have any Anti VIRUS on it, or doesnt seem to although we had put Norton on it last week before I dumped Windows.Quote from: ZeeMan on September 09, 2007, 06:12:54 PM

Thanks SD No it did fine in Safe Mode and it wont stay unfrozen long enough for me to run anything. It doesnt have any Anti Virus on it, or doesnt seem to although we had put Norton on it last week before I dumped Windows.
I'm a bit confused. Did it or did it not freeze in safemode?Sorry, it did fine in Safe ModeQuote from: ZeeMan on September 09, 2007, 06:21:26 PM
Sorry, it did fine in Safe Mode.
Great. If it didn't freeze in safemode did you try running a scan with Norton? This is the first step to determine if your computer is clean although it's probably not your problem. Did you just load XP on top of your existing OS?I didnt really know what I could and couldnt do in Safe Mode. I am going to go and try that and see if I even have Norton still in there. I ran a scan two days ago after installing Norton and before I reinstalled XP and it said it was clean. In addition it doesnt tell me that I have two operating systems and it appeared to do everything great after I reinstalled . There wasnt a problem until I installed SP2.Protection Package:

AVG Free or
Avast
(choose only one of the above )

Spybot Search and Destroy

AdAware

AVG Anti-Spyware

CCleaner

All the above are FREE and will offer excellent protection.
And they can all be run in safemode...I have found that sp2 has had a lot of problems and bugs and errors. You've found wrong. We have installed sp2 on our desktop computer and it stuffed it up. I have answered lots of questions about problems with sp2 and in most cases they can be fixed with patches. Microsoft are bringing them out every few monthsIf you have XP legit and SP2 and all updates available on the web site and you have problems after a fresh install, it's not a Windows problem.Quote
You've found wrong.

I'm in 100% agreement with soybean here, SP2 fixes a lot more bugs than it causes, if it causes any. That's what it was meant to do.
Ok Guys,

I will remember that next time

Solve : Using If to bypass processing in a batch file-not working?

Answer» ENVIRONMENT Windows Server 2000 SP version 5 service pack 4. I need to check if a FILE has data. If not I want to bypass sending the file to print and backing up the contents. I tried code from example in ch000754 but it's not working for me. This is what I've tried. I want to bypass the processing between the IF and :PDFTP.

IF DallasPrintFile.ps equ 5 GOTO PDFTP
.
.
.
:PDFTP

5KB is the filesize if there is nothing to print in the fileIF doesn't work that way. it compares STRINGS. Nothing else. The only thing that will ever "equal" "DallasPrintFile.ps" is "DallasPrintFile.ps", or a variable that expands to that value.

Read ch000754 again. Note the section about FOR.

I must say that help section is rather poorly written. It talks about "a file equal to 0" when it is discussing a file whose size is equal to 0 bytes. Maybe that's where your confusion arose?

Any suggestion as to how I might accomplish my goal or is it not possible? If the filesize is 5kb I want to bypass all processing of itI just told you. Read ch000754 again.
I failed to mention that I tried the For also and it didn't work either. This is what I used

for /F %%A in ("DallasPrintFile.ps") do If %%~zA equ 5kb goto PDFTP
.
.
.
.
.
:PDFTPQuote from: tonibooker on September 11, 2007, 11:57:44 AM
I failed to mention that I tried the For also and it didn't work either. This is what I used

for /F %%A in ("DallasPrintFile.ps") do If %%~zA equ 5kb goto PDFTP
.
.
.
.
.
:PDFTP

OK I'll go through it step by step.

First of all we need to find out the file size of DallasPrintFile.ps. So we use the ~z feature of FOR to get the size. We will put it in a variable called fsize. We will use the /a (arithmetic) switch with the SET command. That way we can do a size comparison.

Quote
for /F %%A in ("DallasPrintFile.ps") do set /a fsize=%%~zA

The file size is given in bytes.

e.g. now we could do

Quote
echo size of file is %fsize% bytes

Did you mean the file size is exactly 5 kb? And is that 5 K binary, i.e. 5 x 1024 bytes (5120 bytes)? Or 5,000 bytes?

on the properties it list the file as
size 4.19KB(4,299 bytes)
size on disk 8.00KB(8,192 bytes)
Looking at file in windows explorer size is listed as 5KBLet me get this straight. The filesize is exactly 4299 bytes if there is nothing to print? Always? Never more or less? You're quite sure?

I want to get this right.

Yes it will always be that size if there is nothing to print.Quote from: tonibooker on September 11, 2007, 03:38:35 PM
Yes it will always be that size if there is nothing to print.

Try this...

for /F %%A in ("DallasPrintFile.ps") do set /a fsize=%%~zA
if "%fsize%" LEQ "4299" goto noprint

REM code to be executed if there is
REM something to print
goto end

:noprint
echo nothing to print

:end

Thanks for you patience, I give it a tryWhen the FOLLOWING line is executed in a batch file. The message "missing operand" is generated. I'm not familiar enough with DOS commands to troubleshoot this. I've searched for the format and all the results look like this is correct but obviously something is not quite right.I've coded it with a LOWERCASE 'a' and the uppercase 'A' after the 'do set...'
Could you tell me what the missing operand is?

for /F %%A in ("DallasPrintFile.ps") do set /A fsize=%%~zA

The following returns nothing before 'bytes'
echo size of file is %fsize% bytesDoes the file exist? Is the filename exactly as shown? Is the batch being run in the same folder?

Yes the file exist and the name is exactly as written. It is not being executed from the same folder. I tried send a screen shot but it didn't work

Quote from: tonibooker on September 13, 2007, 09:59:36 AM
It is not being executed from the same folder.

That is why it isn't working.

If the DallasPrintFile.ps is not in the same folder as the batch file, then you need to add the drive letter and full path like this...

Don't copy this, substitute the proper drive letter and path!

for /F %%A in ("D:\Folder\Subfolder\Another Folder\DallasPrintFile.ps") do set /A fsize=%%~zA

Solve : Bad sound quality.?

Answer»

I have a Windows XP and my sound quality is bad. I never remember it being this bad and I don't know how to FIX it.
I use iTunes to play my music, and surround sound speakers. The speakers are Durabrand model HT-3915.
Everything, no matter how quiet I TURN the controls on the speakers, my computer, and iTunes, it's fuzzy.
Edit: My computer is custom built... that's all I know.are you using sound card?have you ever update your windows?have you try the speakers ANYWHERE just to make sure the speakers alright?
if you using sound card, update the driver. If your computer is custom built what's your current sound card , and is your on-board sound card disabled in bios that can actually cause interference , find your current sound card by right clicking my computer going into computer management , and going into device manger there you will notice a few things , you what to make sure you toggle down to sound .... once there find out your current sound card , once you have pin pointed out yours be sure there isn't ANOTHER sound card enabled , if there is disable it ...... or post back with what you have SEEN and i will tell you if it is or isn't...

Tony Could it be the quality of the music. It should be pritty high to use surround sound speakers

Solve : I'm not sure what causes this?

Answer»

Ok, every now and then my comp will stop letting me sign into anything at all, steam, yahoo, msn, WARCRAFT, etc, however my internet still works. I have tried scanning it with webroot, avg, mcafee, norton, and some others I don't remember. Nothing has fixed this problem so far, I would appreciate some help, so as I won't have to end up rebooting it periodically, thanks for anyone help.what do you mean by your internet still works?
guess you using xp,download avira
http://www.free-av.com/
and superantispyware
http://www.superantispyware.com/
update them and run in safe mode.scan.
Make sure you didn't make little mistake like forgot to input the DNS,Ip address & etc.
Ok usually when you cant sigh into programs it usually means your I-P is off-line , a lot of people don't GIVE the troubleshoot button a 2nd glance , when you sigh into msn , click the troubleshoot button when it errors you , you will notice your i-p is off-line click repair ....... it should clear it up for a while .... ive noticed when this has happened to me i have actually mange to log on and had a brink in the actually connection , windows firewall or any firewall for that matter can cause this , make sure all on-line applications you want on-line are in the firewalls addecption list ....

Tony Well, actually by what I mean the internet still works is that it will let me surf on any webpage I don't need to log into. I've scanned with a bunch of different things in safe and regular mode, and it wouldn't be that firewall would be intercepting it since it logs in beforehand with same configurations. I looked through the trouble SHOOTER for warcraft, steam, msn, and yahoo, and none of them helped me a single bit. Everything works fine except for things I need to log into to do. I already re-booted the computer so the problem is gone for now but it seems to like to COME BACK a lot and is a real hassle. Are you the only user on this machine ? ?
If not are you sure you are logged on in the Admin account ? ?
Have you ran any off the wall registry cleaners recently ? ?No, yes, yes.Well that's what we look for here...tons of info.Did you change any permissions in IE explorer?Oh I'm sorry, it was yes, yes ,yes, but yeah I have not changed any permissions and it's not just with online web pages. It is with all programs that require signing in, not just online.

Hi! I have a Dell Inspiron 8600 running XP Professional. I have plenty of memory (M), plenty of available hard drive space (50 GB) and a non-working system RESTORE feature. No matter which highlighted DATE I select, I GET the same response. I've increased the memory space for it, I've tried manually creating restore points--always the same response. HELP!!!

ok read this.......
Re-Enabling System Restore
One of the tips that was widely circulated on the net when XP Professional was first released involved disabling System Restore via Group Policy Editor. It certainly works, but a problem arises if you want to re-enable System Restore at a later date. There is no option to re-enable it again. To do so:
Start the Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc)
Navigate to Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/System/System Restore
Set Turn off System Restore and Turn off Configuration to Disable
Right CLICK on My Computer and Select Manage
Navigate to Services and Applications/Services
Navigate to System Restore Service and DOUBLE click
On the General tab set [Startup Type] to Automatic using the drop down list
Click the Start button to start the service
Close the Computer Management console
Return to System Restore in Group Policy Editor and configure both to Not Configured
Close Group Policy Editor and reboot the system.
After the reboot is complete, right click My Computer, select Properties and the tab for System Restore will have been restored. Configure it to your individual needs and satisfaction.
8bamboos, Thank you very much for your fix! I tried it out and it seems to work! On the system restore calendar, it is like the program just woke up! Thank You!I fround the following on google if it helps-

• Your computer uses an Ultra Direct Memory ACCESS (UDMA) hard disk controller, and the following conditions are TRUE:
• You use a standard 40-wire connector cable to connect the UDMA drive to the controller instead of the required 80-wire, 40-pin cable.
• The basic input/output system (BIOS) settings are configured to force the faster UDMA modes.
• The file system is damaged and cannot be mounted.

At the command PROMPT, type exit, and then press ENTER to restart your computer. For additional information about how to use the Recovery Console in Windows XP, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058/EN-US/

This should help ya ! Again Spero-T you fail to address the OP's question.

Why don't you have a XP disc anymore? Did you loose it or was your laptop not shipped with one?Sorry sir wont happen again I lost it. I already determined that there is a file system error. I just dont know how to fix it without a startup disc!can't you ORDER a startup disc from your computer maker? This site claims that the error message is usually caused by a corrupt Boot.ini file and has some suggestions for a cure.

If you go here and download/unzip/burn the .iso file for Windows XP Emergency Boot CD then boot from it you might be able to boot to Win on your hdd then rewrite the Boot.ini file.

Good lucklet us know how you go pls

Solve : MBR problem?

Answer»

Hi, I had 2 os Win 98 in C: & Win XP in D: , i formatted C: and installed UBUNTU, but There was the MBR, so it was erased...when i rebooted the computer my win xp is not detecting only ubuntu is detecting and when i TRIED to install a fresh copy of XP , it says SOMETHING like this
" To install Win XP on the partition you selected, setup must write some startup files to the following disk.

However this disk doesnot contain Win XP compatible partition."

I tried different partitions to install and i tried FIXMBR, FIXBOOT & FIXBOOT D: , but nothing happens, pls help i am really stuck in this case can i use a bootdisk?? It is a Linux partition now since you installed Ubuntu...i believe you need to use UBUNTO to remove the partition and then re-create it to a Windows partition with the XP CD...

Solve : Need to copy file from Windows XP disk?

Answer»

Hello gents.

I'm needing to copy the vgaoem.fon file from my windows XP disk. I'm using the following command line in the repair console:

expand D:\i386\vgaoem.fo_drive:\windows\system

The problem is that it can not find or recongize this directory. Placing the windows XP disk into another computer and SEARCHING through the disk I find that there is in fact a I386 directory and also the file I'm needing to replace. Any suggestions?Quote

expand D:\i386\vgaoem.fo_drive:\windows\system

is that exactly what you typed?
YesExpand is looking for a FOLDER NAMED D:\i386\vgaoem.fo_drive:\windows\system and of course there isn't one.

Try expand D:\i386\vgaoem.fo_ c:\windows\system

Note the space between fo_ and c:

Good luck

Solve : kdojf.exe??????

Answer»

Using my Trojan remover 6.2, I get a kind of info that the software can not open the .exe......I do not know what this kdojf does or stands for...is it a trojan file itself? Found the kdofj.exe file in C:\windows\system32\

have XP(SP2 and all updates done), IE70, Sygate/AVG..both, 4.2Ghz, 2048RAM

and yes I googled first...nope nothing..Many viruses/trojans/etc creates executables with random file names. Considering the filename and the placement I'm leaning towards this being malware.
Have you scanned it with AVG?
You can also try scanning it with a whole range on AV programs by UPLOADING the file to this site.

Result=Troan...lol....but incredible that both Windows and AVG DO NOT find this bugger!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH.....wish the machine this website uses was a software....

Currently, there is not any solution that offers a 100% effectiveness rate for detecting viruses and malware.

You may want to scan your computer with an online virus scanner and see if it picks up more of this infection.
I would suggest Kaspersky or F-Secure since they both detect it.yes i MIGHT...have been using AVG for so long and earlier on I used the norwegian version of F-Secure for many years but they became unaccurate, so I skipped it...but well, hey they might have developed too or Kaspersky, which sounds more like a name from a James Bond Movie...lol..thanks again for your great advise...cool show... The ones Kaspersky found were in the C:\system Volume Information catalogue, a catalogue I can not access it seems...how do I get those trojans out of my system? I've replied to your PM so check it for instructions.
To anyone else that might be interested, to get rid anything in the "system Volume Information" folder you have to clear your system restore points.

Solve : my computer display?

Answer»

hey all! i would appreciate your help on this annoying little issue i've suddenly come across. whenever i use to click on 'my computer' the WINDOW would open and show me the icons divided into their categories like:

* hard disk drives
* removable storage
* other?

i NEVER really paid attention to what the headings were, but they divided my hard disk drives from my removable storage drives, and divided the 'My Documents' icons from all that under another heading...

but today after doing nothing really spectacular or different, when i clicked on 'my computer' it DISPLAYED all my hard disk drives, removable storage drives and everything else just like you would see in your average folder. like they were all displayed together, not divided up like they use to be.

i've been clicking around with 'view' options but to no avail... any idea on how to bring back that division of drives?

any help will be greatly appreciated it's something little, but it's something i've grown use to!

ta!

- rrb

Just right click in blank space > ARRANGE icons by > categories.ahhhhhhh!!! thank you!

i had to click on 'show in groups' after right clicking the blank space and going to arrange icons...

ahh that seems to easy, i FEEL like such a dork haha

THANKS AGAIN!
No problem at all. Glad to help.

Solve : Windows XP Deleting Troubles?

Answer»

Hello all. This is my first post, and I'm feeling RATHER desperate. I first encountered this problem a while ago, but thought nothing of it. Here goes:

It says that there's something in my recycling bin (as indicated by the icon showing paper in said bin.)
I right click on it, and hit "Empty RECYCLE Bin".
It says there's 14 files in there.
Then, it says "Cannot delete Dc242: Access Is Denied. Make sure the disk is not write protected and that the file is not currently in use."
I do not understand this, as I don't even KNOW what "Dc242" is, it was that LONG ago. Also, you're not able to PUT THINGS into the recycle bin when its "write protected or in use", which is also interesting.
As for the other supposed 13 files, nothing happens to them, either, as it just stops after the error message.
If I go into the recycle bin, there's nothing there, even though I have "show hidden files and folders" turned on, and such.

Any help anyone could give would be greatly appreciated.Reboot and press F8 to boot into safe mode. Log in and delete the files. What seems to be happening is that Windows is seeing that file as a running process, so you can't delete it. Chances are it's not going to run in safe mode and it will delete. Also while in safe mode run an anti virus scan just to make sure. I'm not 100% sure but I think that file is associated with a known virus.

Solve : Keyboard not working after Bios screen...?

Answer»

So basically I started to get tons of errors on my computer randomly one day so I restarted my computer and it took way longer than usual to load and when it did finally load it went VERY SLOW. It didn't even load everything it just had the little hour glass thing and and kept loading and loading. I tried to reformat and when I got to the screen after the Bios screen that says "Click any key to boot from CD", I try to click and nothing happens. I have tried other keyboard and still the same thing. My keyboard works on the Bios screen but, not on the screen I mentioned. When my computer loads it takes me to the screen where I can choose safe mode but none of the KEYBOARDS work on that screen. So, I just have to let it load and my hard drive just restarts and loads again. It does this over and over again. I have tried different hard drives, and keyboards and I still get nothing. As I said before I can use my keyboard on the Bios screen but, not on any screen after it.If your keyboard is USB...try using a PS/2 keyboard instead...Some BIOSs have a setting that enables the USB keyboard. If you can find it (sorry, can't show you as all BIOS's are different), and ENABLE it if it isn't already, you can probably use the USB keyboard from there. I SAY "probably" because I've seen computers do odd stuff.

Good luck.Your Bios could be corrupt....

Try the above use a old ps2 keyboard if possiable

Solve : Windows XP Pro install (please insert disk error)?

Answer»

ok i got alot of reasours (other old computers) so i can try everything

I am installing windows xp pro. i put the disk into cdrom drive start computer up and wait for press any key to boot from cd message. first it don't come up . TURN comp off turn on this time it find cd but it took for fricken ever like a good 2 minutes loads most file then i get and error saying cannot find a certain file.

first does it sound like a cd drive cd or bios setting that is causeing my problem?

if you need more info i will give you it asap.
then i tryed letting it boot up to windows xp home

do it that way it gave disk error or something can't remember now i go to finish installing xp pro and it gives me a message saying please insert disk labeled xp professional sp2Check the CD first for greasy smudges and fingerprints and clean if necessary.brand new not a spec of dust or single scratchDid this machine have any issues prior to the attempted XPPro install ? ?
Post alot more info on the machine in question and what happened prior...If the CD is good then it SOUNDS like the CD player is having trouble doing the reading. Do you have a spare CD player you can try in its place?well with windows xp home it didn't want to burn a few disks but i think that was it i trying a different ide cable now repluged everything in 233mhz processor 192mb ram 4mb graphics just a crappy sever computer is what i gonna use it for. and right now i trying it in a different machine. should i use a lens cleaning cd or disk i have ONE on order it is and older cd drive so that might be it
If the cable doesn't solve it then the CD player is the next thing to lookat.

I have resurected a COUPLE of players that didn't burn or read properly with a CD cleaning disc in the past.

With the low price of CD-rewriters these days though i tend to replace them.well the cable didn't work and the different computer didn't work so i guess it's toast ... i'll try cd lens cleaner before i toss it might as well save a few bucks...

Solve : Making second tower for secondary hard drives.?

Answer»

Is it possible to use an older tower to BUILD a basic slave drive tower. And if so how and what do I need to complete said task. THANKS for the helpHello.

That is quite a novel idea! That would sure make things roomier, EXCEPT for one complication: You need wires to connect the slave drives to the motherboard, along with the Master drive(s), just as if they weren't in seperate boxes. While I'm sure you can EXTEND the IDE/RAID cables to make this possible, note that you'll probably have to keep the two boxes right next to each other, making any bonus from doing this minimal (unless you're really pressed for box space).

It may be simpler to buy a LARGER box for your equipment, or run a server with the other hard drives in separate towers. But that can run a rather large price tag and takes quite a bit of know-how that I don't know if you possess or not.

Solve : Problem Opening File?

Answer»

I was typing up a document on Microsoft Word on this old Windows 95 computer. While the program was still open, I turned off the computer manually using the power button. When I turned the computer back on and attempted to open my file, a message came up saying that "The document name or path is not VALID". I opened up the properties window for the file, and although the general information was the same as most working documents, the summary and statistics were blank. I turned off the computer, and re-started it, this time doing scan disc. Sure enough, an error message came up. I forgot to write down exactly what the error message said, but it was something along the lines of "The file (myfile).doc has an error. The first part is still working, but recent changes could prevent you from opening it. Fix this problem?" I clicked YES, and rather then fix it, it created a new file with the same name as my old one, except the first 2 letters were REPLACED with "~$". I tried to open it, and it said I needed to install some language decoder, and it appeared as a bunch of little rectangles instead of letters. I also saved the original file to a disc and tried it on a newer computer (the Windows XP I'm using right now), but the same "missing path" error message came up. Help! i believe your file already corrupted
why u used a 95 instead have xp,xp much more better & can save files even you do that kinda instant shutdown..yes I concur the file is corrupt I only use the Windows 95 for typing. Sometimes it's useful to have an extra computer around just for that purpose, even if it is a really old one (I'm in high school... I'm typing out labs and essays every second day). So about this corrupted file, is there anything I could possibly do to rescue it? It does sound like a corrupted file. Were you saving to flash drive or local hard DISK?The file is probably gone since you shutdown Windows without saving it...It had been saved previously so it's still there, it just won't open. It was about 2 PAGES long, and I had only added an additional line or two before turning off the computer without saving it. Is there any possible way I could recover at least part of the document?

Solve : Microsoft Dumpflop Utility?

Answer»
Where can I find this SOFTWARE on my XP Pro or where can I download it to view dumpfiles after a crash?http://labmice.techtarget.com/troubleshooting/memorydumps.htm

it should have solutionDumpflop will not LET you view anything. Dumpexam will create a file which you can view but whether the INFO is of any use is questionable.

Some info:
Interpreting dump files
Three files located on the Windows NT Server 4.0 CD-ROM in the \SUPPORT\DEBUG\I386 or \SUPPORT\DEBUG\ALPHA subdirectories (depending on your platform) assist you in your efforts to groom and analyze your dump data. The three files are: DUMPCHK.EXE, DUMPEXAM.EXE, and DUMPFLOP.EXE.

DUMPCHK.EXE ensures that your files may be read by a debugger.

DUMPEXAM.EXE basically creates a text file that contains pertinent information from the Memory.dmp (crash dump) file.

DUMPFLOP.EXE is, as the name implies, a utility that you can use to write a dump file in segments to the floppy disk. This utility compresses the information so that it may be placed on as few floppy disks as possible. Access to symbols is not required.

Good luck.

well, if you are already wishing me good luck I think I'll leave this problem

What is the best way to find out why windows suddenly crashes and restarts without a blue screen?
What is the best freeware to analyse and REPAIR the problem? I have TuneUp Utilities installed but I think it needs something more powerful to get down to the problem.

In the device manager there are no errors showing except for a deactivated audio controller that has been there a while. So I couldnt find any IRQ-ressouce conflicts at first view.

I think this has to do with a software conflict so where do I start?

Do your Event Logs give any problem indications?

Here's a pointer - another poster experienced a problem where a blue screen flashed then the system rebooted. The problem was defined as being "A single bit ram error in a location used for an important kernel pointer."

His system ran Win 98, 98se and Linux without problem so the defective bit must have been outside ram used by those systems or in a much less sensitive location.

I suggest you d/l & run Memtest86.

Also suggest you disable the Auto Restart feature in order to view the blue screen detail - R.click My Computer>Properties>Advanced Tab>Settings in Startup & Recovery then uncheck the Auto Restart box. (Note: The foregoing is used in XP Home, Pro might be slightly different).

This is not good. Go to the run command and type ipconfig look for the reference to this file and uncheck it / reboot into Safe Mode & run your AV & AS software.

Alan <>< 10X Alan, but as I am UNFAMILIAR with abbs, what do AV & AS stand forAV= Antivirus
AS= Antispyware
I would suggest that you take a look here. (for free AV and AS)

Jonas i noticed ale52 had a typo......i believe he wanted u to go to Start/Run/msconfig....not ipconfig ......Hi guys... I hope there is another way round this 'cause I couldn't even log on in Safe mode....Any ideas??....10Xyou should still be able to access msconfig in real mode. Hi aga...the notebook is caught up in a restarting loop and would not go past the F8 screen. If i select any or none of the safe modes, it would CONTINUE to restart no matter what??..Can't get a pin on this problem!!..Any suggestions?...Well what happens?
Do you get a blue screen?
Are you able to read it or is it to fast?

Jonas Hi jonas,
thanx ofr ur reply....Yes , I am getting a bllue screen, and it is too fast. Nevertheless, I managed to freeze it @ the blue screen through the option in f8 saying ''Disable auto restart on system failure'. ..Anyway, the blue screen says,
****STOP: {0X00000024, 0X82E9CEF0, 0XC0000102, 0X00000000}.

By the way, my OS is winxp Pro, not Home edition.

10X agn man,..Looking 4ward to hearing from all you guys. This error is caused by a seriously fragmented hard drive or an actual physical problem with the drive itself...

If you are unable to start Windows normally you may have to swap it into another machine to run both chkdsk and defrag on that drive.

I would also visit the drive manuf. site and DLoad and run their diagnostics to see if the drive is getting ready to fail.

When you move it to another machine make sure it is jumpered as slave and DO NOT TRY to boot it in the other machine...

Solve : Computer will not boot up.?

Answer»

Help needed!

I'm running an old Pentium 4 Gateway and last night I ran a program downloaded from PC World that could recover deleted FILES or permanently delete files. This is the app: http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,23108-order,1-page,1-c,alldownloads/description.html

I had the program permanently delete all the files it could recover from my recycle bin. Well I left it on overnight since it was a lengthy process and when I came back to the comp in the morning, it was sitting on a black screen with "Operating System ERROR" in the top left corner. Now when I ATTEMPT to boot the computer, it will not go any further than the Gateway Logo bootscreen. I cannot enter safe mode...and the only button that I have found to work is F1...which is supposed to take me to "Change System Settings" but just takes me to a black screen that I cannot type anything on.

Any Idea on what I did this time?!? and How I can fix this? Anyy help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
RobCan you even get to the menu where you SELECT Safe Mode, and have you tried a system restore?

Sounds like a reinstall may be in your future. What flavor of Windows are you running ? ?

And do you have a shiny CD that says Microsoft all over it ? ?XP.

When I insert the XP Home Edition CD, nothing occurs.

well I waited a couple of hours and powered the computer back on with the XP Cd in it....it is now running windows setup.

Hopefully this is all I will have to do.

Solve : Help! A Child played with my laptop and now I can't find wireless signals!!!?

Answer»

Help! I have an HP Pavillion laptop running Windows XP. A freind's child was over and got her hands on the keyboard, OPENED a TON of windows, and now we cannot pick-up any wireless signals. I know the wirele4ss in the house is ok because I am writing this with the other computer.

Is this as SIMPLE as she somehow shut off an ANTENNAE?If your wireless connection is located on the taskbar...lower right...near your clock, you can right-click the icon and select Repair.

Otherwise, find the icon in your Network Connections and do the same thing.

If neither of these work, try restoring your computer to the time before the child got their hands on your keyboard. Many laptops also have a switch on them to turn the wireless receiver on/off. Try looking for one and make sure it's SET to on.Thanks to Deerpark for keeping it simple and solving my problem!Glad to hear it fixed your problem. Children are the bane of electronics.

My problem is that my computer likes to crash randomly. It crashes whether it's plugged in or not, on a cooling pad, or with supports so the fan isn't touching anything. My first thought was over heating, but it doesn't get hotter than normal, and the fan is working fine. I've had this problem for a while, and I think it is was caused my hard drive to crash. Now with a new hard drive, it still does it. So I thought maybe it had something to do with the adapter, so I got a new one, still the problem is there. I've tried looking for driver updates, but I can't find any for the 6600, only 7800 and 7900. Recently(just 5 minutes ago) I was told I should check into the BIOS for anything and lower the AGGRESSION of the computer. But when I went into it, the computer shut right down. This is a new thing. Normally it takes a moment before it shuts down on me, but when I go into BIOS I have about 5 seconds to look at the screen before it crashes. I've tried with the laptop plugged in(I've checked to make sure it works) and I've tried with it unplugged and a little less than full battery. Also, if it shuts down and it was plugged in, unless I unplug it when I try to turn it back on, it will flash a quick error message saying:

"the application failed to initialize properly (0Xc0000142). Click on OK to terminate the application."

Then it will start going into a continuous loop of rebooting itself until I unplug it. Please help, the computer I use now it a piece of CRAP and I can't take it anymore! ><

antivirus & antispyware protection / service packs installed / when did it start happening / did it ever work right / installed any new software / is it the same application that crashes each time / tried booting into Safe Mode & does it crash then / tried turning off all applications starting with 'msconfig'?

Alan <>< I don't have antivirus or anti spyware because I haven't had the chance to put it on again and now the disk drive won't work so I can't install it / How do I check the service packs? / This started happening about a week after the warrenty ended in feb. And I also think this may have been the cause for my hard drive crashing / It worked perfectly fine until about 5 or 6 months and then the CD drive started acting up and being choosy about reading DVDs/ I have installed a vew games and such, but nothing out of the norm / It crashed randomly, but I can use it longer if I don't run anything to big, but I recently found out that it crashes real quick when I try to get into the BIOS / It shuts off when I try to get into safe mode too / How do I turn off all applications?

Also, today when I went to put in a CD, the computer folder didn't even find a CD drive. I have had this happen a few times, and when I just reboot, it corrects itself and everything is fine. But when I rebooted this time it came up with a blue screen that said:

Stop: c000021a {Fatal System Error}
the windows Logon Process system terminated unexpectedly with a status of
0x00000402 (0x00000000 0x00000000)
The system has been shut down

So I just rebooted and it started normally again with the exception of the Disk drive being there. this is the first time I've seen this message. I can't figure out how to get my disk drive back.

Also, I am not too worried about losing any data. It's pretty much still clean from the new hard drive. Sounds like either a motherboard/RAM/power supply issue. The only way to isolate the problem is to replace each. In this case the only one you can replace it the RAM.

It's really tough with a laptop and there are no "shortcuts" on this one.

You might try CONTACTING the manufacturer and ask for grace from them. Sometimes they are forgiving and will cut you some slack. The only way to know is to call.

Alan <><

YUP, I've thought about it and decided I'm just going to save up and buy another. Thanks for your help, I really do appreciate it!

When I boot up my grandma's computer ( windows XP..that's all I know), all that shows is the desktop background picture. That's it. I can't right click on it to see if it is being hidden and if I go through control panel (using task manager to open internet explorer then using it to get the desktop), I can't change Taskbar and Start menu options. It is non responsive when I click on it.

I'm not a computer expert, so please try to make any hel as simple as possible, thanks!Have you tried restarting your computer?Yes they have..

Have you tried booting into safe mode by tapping F8 just before Windows loads? Does that work?

You could also try typing sfc /scannow in a Command Prompt Window.

Any recent hardware / driver / software / updates that may have caused this?Quote from: starNthabunch on August 18, 2007, 05:38:29 PM

As FAR as I know, the LAST thing she did was defrag. You said you could get explorer to run? Now you can't? I'm ASSUMING in your previous post you meant explorer, not Internet Explorer.

How did you make a new user? Control Panel? How did you get there if you can't start explorer.exe?

What happens when you try get into safe mode.

To run 'sfc /scannow'. Simply type that into the new task window in task manager..Quote from: DeltaSlaya on August 18, 2007, 05:46:33 PM

'sfc /scannow' didn't work. With explorer, when I type explorer.exe under new task it says: explorer.exe is not a valid WIN32 application (someone had suggested that to someone with a similar problem). I made a new user going through msconfig. Sorry if I'm confusing.oh, and safe mode just doesn't show up when I press F8 at startupWhat do you mean it didn't work, what happened?

Well then you're not pressing it at the right time. You have to press it BEFORE Windows starts loading. Just tap it once a second, it will get there.I got into safe mode, nothing was different, except instead of my background picture it was just the black safe mode background.Well I can't really help any further, I think you just need to let 'sfc /scannow' take a look.

Can you start cmd.exe from the new task? If so you can type the command in there.

Solve : New computer install of Windows Xp troubles?

Answer»

Hello every one I shure do NEED some help here.I just built a new computer and am trying to install windows XP-----it only goes as FAR as to see my hard drive and just stops, no beeps no screen nothing. I tried a few things in bios but all the same. I once got it to go as far as to format the hard drive---and when it started to load the files----it stopped.
ASUS P5N-E SLI BOARD
Pentium 4 3.20Ghz 800MHz
1 g of ram
evga card pci-express
120 g hard drive
OEM virsion Xp sp2---from tiger direct

What do you mean by 'stopped'?

What hardware is visible in the BIOS? What did you try in the BIOS? Did you change anything prior to trying to install windows XP?

Have you tried setting it back to default or fail-safe to diagnose the problem?

and, obviously, double-check and recheck all connections. You didn't mention your power supply wattage / manufacturer either, that may be of concern as well.Use the utility's CD that shipped with the HDD to partition/format it and be ready for the OS install...make sure to make the partition active.Power supply is new 550 w
I put the bios back to default
I changed some things like
Changed pci---to pci-express
Bios see's all that is in the tower---ram----hard drive---
It just shuts down----Like you pulled the cord-----all connectors are good-----it will run in bios forever-------Cpu temp is only 60deg--cell
Will the hard drive cd work with no O.S. installed?
This is mt first windows install---I have done alot of linux ones But never a Windows
Thank you allTried the hard drive cd----did every thing right on-----tells me to pu in my o.s. disc----I do--gets to where I have to agree to user agrement-----and just shuts down-----no screen---no beeps----nothingThe '-' key is not a substitute for space ' '.

Now, I'd suspect the hard drive, possibly PSU? or RAM. Have you run RAM tests? www.memtest.org

60°C is an alright temperature, though in the BIOS thats probably a bit high, once you start RUNNING thats going to shoot up when it starts doing something like read / write operations? Have you installed the CPU correctly?

You could try installing linux I don't know? You may have a faulty disc but I don't know why it would crash like this.Tryied 2 new hard drives, but the ram in different slots, I got it to go as far as to format the drive and that took about 45 mins. And after that it started to down load files. I could see the disc drive was busy, but after about 2mins, It just shut down again.
I use linux now love it. But I need to run some windows usb stuf that linux cant handle.Did you run memtest though. What about checking CPU?

It could be the motherboard, I assume you still have a warranty.I'd be concerned about the 60C while sitting in bios too.
Fans, heatsink, thermal paste, cpu voltage?
Quote

Have you installed the CPU correctly?
Found one thing, the cpu fan was not fully seated. First time I used this STYLE>
Temp down to42 c nowYAY I was right I was right! Yes LGA775 is a bit different, easier but if you're not used to it you mightn't get it on correctly.

And did that fix any problems?Thank you all. It was the cpu temp. Reinstalled the cpu and the fan. I got the temp down to 42 c. I was afraid with this socket that I might break the board by pushing down on those locks. It is loading nice now.
Bless you all, job WELL DONE
TOM Yay I solved something!

Yea you have to press down pretty hard to get the heatsink on. For once it wasn't Microsofts fault!?

If the motherboard stands are screwed on right you won't break the board easily.

Solve : PC won't boot even in Safe....?

Answer»

I have an older Dell (not sure on the model) running windows XP. Computer was working fine until LAST night. I shut the computer down because we were having an electrical storm. When I tried to restart the computer it looks like it will boot normally you get the black windows screen with the moving load bar at the bottom....then you get a flash of the "blue screen of death" flashes to quick to read it. Then a black screen with a cursor then it goes to "power was intrupted do you want to boot in SAFE mode" screen. IF you try to boot in any mode it looks like it loads certain files then the same thing as above happens and your back to the safe mode screen. You can get to the system setup screen if you hit the F2 key.

Any ideas whats wrong? I thought about reloading windows but I need to be sure not to lose any info on the hard drive if POSSIBLE....

Thanks in advanceTry this. Keep pressing F8 as the computer is booting up and choose "disable automatic reboot on system failure" or something like that. You should then be able to see what the BSOD says. Post the error code here and hopefully someone knows how to fix this. So,what type of online service do you have?

Solve : Microsoft Word 2000 with Windows XP??

Answer»

On my windows 98 that I used I had microsoft word 2000 installed on my compaq.

Now with my windows XP emachines computer there is open office, well needless to say I don't like open office. I would like to use my MW2000 again.

MY QUESTION Can I install MW2000 on my emachines windows XP ?

MW2000=microsoft word 2000The obvious question, do you have your Office 2000 CD? You need it; that's all there is to it.Quote from: liliesplace on August 18, 2007, 11:24:08 AM

needless to say I don't like open office.

Why "needless to say"? I think Open Office is fine for many users. I know a small business that uses Open Office apps very successfully. Above all, it's free.

To contrex:Quote

I could use it for certain things,I have to get used to it,what is better than free. I would most LIKELY use it for certain app's but I need MW for my job,it is a requirement to have MW2000 and no other processor.

To soybean: Quote

Yes I have the cd,I just wanted to ask first before I installed it because I thought maybe there is a MW just for windows XP,I didn't know if installing it would cause a problem since the previous os was w98.

Thanks to you both. I am new to this windows XP OS used W98 for so long. I will have both computers running soon,my windows 98 OS compaq computer needs an Ethernet Adapter as it doesn't have an Ethernet Port. Shopping around right now for a good price. Another problem I have is the plug to my compaq printer burned up I mean that literally smoke came out of it. I am having a hard time finding one to replace it. I guess I will try ebay,or you know when I can either of the two items mentioned above at a good fair price let me know. Thanks again.

Sure, you can install Office 2000 with Windows XP. However, installing it on two computers, unless they are a desktop PC and laptop/notebook, is a violation of the software license. Can you just remove it from the Win 98 clunker?

Quote

Violation? Both my computers are desktop. And as soon as I get the ethernet port for my W98 I will have it up and running again, actually I like W98. One computer for me and one for my husband. Why would I go out and buy MSword 2000 again if I have the cd,and want to install it on my WXP too. The MWord program came with my compaq.

I don't get the point of your last post. I'm saying, if you have a single user license, which is surely what you have, then you can only install MS Office on a single computer. The exception to that, which I believe applies to all versions of MS Office since Office 97 or earlier, is that can install it on a desktop/tower PC, i.e. non-portable computer, and a laptop or notebook, i.e. portable, computer. What part of this am I not making clear to you?Quote from: liliesplace on August 18, 2007, 01:34:09 PM

Again, what's your point? Are you implying that since "The MWord program came with my compaq", you can do whatever you want with it? Sorry, that's not how it works.

I believe what you have there is an OEM version of MW. So, it probably can't be legally installed on any other computer. But, read the license agreement to be sure, or you might call Microsoft on this.

Look, I'm just telling you the legalities of the software license agreement here. Do what you want, but don't expect members of the forum to support your position that you can do whatever you want with it. We can't advocate illegal installations of software here in the forum.

Is the sermon over, Reverend? I think that if Liliespace deinstalls MS Word from the Compaq, she should have every right to install it on another machine. If the EULA forbids that, I'd like to see what a court would have to say about whether it is unduly restrictive.

Anyway, it all depends on which jurisdiction you live in. I know it surprises some people, but is a weird fact that not everybody in the world lives in the USA. The USA where people seem to tremble at the thought of doing something "illegal" with their own software that they paid for (how crazy is that?).

Come to Europe folks, where we still have freedom.

Doesn't matter what you think. The key point here is the legalities involved. If she had purchased MW as a retail product, i.e. purchased separately from her computer, she can transfer it from one computer to another. Being an OEM version, I'm not sure about the legality of transferring but I have serious doubts about it. Here's an article on this point: Should I buy the OEM version or the Retail version of software?

Is the license agreement for Europeans any different than in the USA? I really don't know but I would guess it's not.In the UK we have a law that says that unfair clauses in contracts are NULL and void, and that courts can strike down such clauses or the entire contract. In particular, software EULAs which are deemed to come into force when the packaging is opened are frowned upon.

Even in the USA, the judge, in the case Adobe vs Softman heard in the Central District of California, has RULED that consumers can resell bundled software, no matter what the EULA says. Specifically, the ruling decrees that software purchases be treated as sales transactions, rather than explicit license agreements. In other words, consumers should have the same rights they'd enjoy under existing copyright legislation when buying a CD or a book. They can't make copies, but they can resell what they own. So I reckon that Liliespace should be OK.If she can sell it she can use it how she likes.

Solve : Windows ME??

Answer»

Hello all. I just BOUGHT a used comp off of my BIL and it is an HP Pavilion Windows ME. It is very slow, and has a lot of programs installed on it that I don't need/use. I was wondering if it is possible to just scrap everything on here, get RID of any viruses, and upgrade my windows to something that is STILL supported? ALso, for right now, how do I stop all the programs that just popup(ICONS) on my taskbar next to the VOLUME icon?

Thanks
Mande A clean wipe of the HDD and a re-install would be best in this case...

Solve : Question about where to save my photos to from my floppy disk?

Answer» I have WINDOWS XP (emachines computer)I always had windows 98 on my compaq and had a software program from a previous camera that I saved my photos to.

I use a different camera now that I bought used without the software, this camera uses a floppy 3 1/2 disk.

I go to my computer and open the disk by clicking on 3 1/2 floppy so I can view my photos, the photos go directly to the photoplus program. On windows 98 I did the same thing except when I clicked on a photo a browser would open and I right clicked the photo to "saveas" and it went right to the software I used for my previous camera. Which was fine cause I could save them and the pictures went to a photo program to view later.

Is there a program on windows xp that I can save my photos to or do I need to download a program from the download website?

Paintshop photo plus is a trial software that came with my printer, and I am not interested in buying it after the trial PERIOD. If windows XP doesn't have any program on it for me to save my pictures to, do you know of any free programs I can download to save my pictures to?

If there isn't alredy, check your My Documents folder for ANOTHER folder CALLED My Pictures. If there isn't a folder...create one and save all your photos there.

The only thing you really need to do is to associate a program already installed on your computer to handle those file types.

Your photos...can you tell us the file types? Are they .jpg, or some other file type?

Windows XP has a program called Picture and Fax Viewer. Just right click on your image and select Open With and then select Picture and Fax viewer...if it is installed on your system. All Windows XP systems have a Windows Picture and Fax Viewer that can be using for viewing pictures and running slide shows. But, freeware programs are available and INCLUDE Photobie, Paint.Net, and IrfanView.

Solve : realy slow comp 2000/xp? HELP?

Answer»

ok my comp is really slow everything takes for ever to load up. the comp says on the side windows 2000 but it runs on XP. i have 10GB of hard DRIVE left and carnt understand why it is so slow. does any one know any SOLUTIONS to solve this?
thanks nathanThere is a good chance that your computer is infected with viruses, malware, spyware, etc. What protection programs do you use?So, the computer was originally Windows 2000 but was LATER upgraded to Win XP, right? And, you have 10GB of hard drive space left out of how MUCH TOTAL space? How much RAM do you have? What's the processor speed?

Did the slowness start suddenly or has it been getting gradually slower? Did you make any hardware or software changes about the time this slowness started? You said, "my comp is really slow everything takes for ever to load up", but that's vague. Can you give some examples of load up times? And, answer Soviet Genius' question.
