Solve : Error Message, See Below?

Answer»

Hello,
Am sorry too, for the delay, the black screen that appeared, the first couple of times, after I did what, you suggested to do, does not appear anymore, when it did appear, I still able to start my computer, and WINDOWS comes up, and my computer runs, but the other day, it rebooted itself again, and brought up Windows fine, then too, it froze-locked up, had to turn it off the hardway again, and re-started it, Windows came back up fine. This is my only computer.

Thanks.

verylost.Hi,

I guess the first thing I would recommend is backing up any personal data that you have on that system next time you're able to get into Windows. At this point you never know when you'll be able to get it again.

Windows has an event log that should log what is happening when it freezes. Here is a link on how to read it.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427

That log may give us an idea of what is causing the system to hard lock up like that. It's quite possibly the processor just isn't able to handle a large number of processes anymore. Or it could be that some software is over-taxing it.

You may also want to do some basic maintenance on the system such as defragging the hard drive, cleaning out OLD, unused files, clearing temporary internt files, etc.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314848

Can you PM me with the service tag of your system? It's located on a sticker that's attached to EITHER the side or back of the system. Depending on what model you have it may have a front ACCESS door to USB ports and it could be in there. I'll pull up some specific information about your model in our system and see how BEST to help you.

Thank you,

Todd

Customer Advocate
Dell, Inc.I want to say Thanks, DellCA, for your advice, and I also want to say Thanks to all, on their advice, I have met to post earlier, but kept putting it off, until now, I am very sorry about that. My computer is working great now, I am not sure what I did to it, to make it work great again, but without any of your suggestions, I would of not been able to do whatever I did, to undo my computer problems, and once again, Thanks alot. Hopefully no more computer problems, but if does, then I will be back here for help again.

Thanks again.

Enter Start>Run then type DRWTSN32.EXE in the dialog box and hit OK, Dr Watson should start. Make sure that the Visual Notification box is unticked.

At the top of the window you will see the path to the Dr Watson logfile (Something like C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\ALL USERS\APPLICATION DATA\MICROSOFT\DR WATSON) from which you might get some info as to what is causing the problem.

It might be of HELP to you to read the Dr Watson Help file (click Help in the Dr Watson window).

Capitals are for emphasis only.

Good luck.Thanks. I'll GIVE it a try. Before I do, is Dr. Watson a software, is it ORIGINALLY installed with computer. I know I don't have this software, if indeed it is a software. Not sure!Yes, Dr. Watson is a piece of software, it is part of Windows.

Solve : How to undo Safely Remove Hardware?

Answer»

I have a ton of stuff on my EXTERNAL hard drive, which happens to be my E drive.

I somehow managed to click safely remove hardware, thus removing my E drive.

I went to Hardware Manager to try and recover it and GOT the following meg;

Windows cannot use this hardware device because it has been prepared for "safe removal", but it has not been removed from the computer. (CODE 47)

To fix this problem, unplug this device from your computer and then plug it in again.

I have not rebooted or anything yet.

How do I restore this drive w/o losing its contents...?

THANK you very much.

Have you tried this?

Safely removing hardware only allows you to disconnect the device...it does not delete the contents of that device.Thank you for your help everyone. Have a GREAT day.

Solve : Sony Viao laptop DVD drive will not open?

Answer»

I was RECENTLY conducting a system restore wth sony Viao resotre discs and the power went out. Now my computer will not boot all the WAY and my DVD tray will not open. I can PRESS F2 to get to the Bios screens, but can find nothing that will open my DVD tray.
Please help. There must certainly be a way to open the DVD tray as the computer is starting.
Thanks. There should be a little hole on the outside of the CD tray, take a paperclip, bend it so it's STRAIGHT and push
it in the hole. The tray should pop open.If this is one of those rare occasions where the CD drive doesnt have a hole:

Your drive might just be busted. Be glad (I know, its hard to be glad) that it didnt get the REST of your computer.
There should be a keyboard combination that you can try, by pressing the FN key, and the key, and while holding that down, press the other key somewhere on your keyboard that has a picture of a CD-ROM drive.

Solve : Computer will not start!?

Answer»

Hello. I returned home from work yesterday to find that my computer (windows XP) had a blank screen with only a blinking cursor in the upper left hand corner of the screen. Ever since then, it will not start or do anything, but return to that sreen with the blinking cursor.

Any ideas what is wrong? Can I fix it? Is all of my information of the hard DRIVE lost?!?

Any help would be great! Thanks!Your data is porbably not lost.
When you first turn on your computer try and get into the BIOS. NORMALLY by tapping and F-key or Del but every computer is different. If you can get in then check to make sure there is not BIOS level password set. If you cannot get to the BIOS try to get to a recovery drive. normally it will tell you how to get to it at the same time as the BIOS. If you cannot get your computer to start at all and cant get it past this you may need to do a CMOS wipe which and unexperienced user should not do without experienced supervision. If you do KNOW a little about hardware and how to install Hard Drives try putting your harddrive into a different computer and getting the information off of it that way. before you try taking out your hard drive or wiping CMOS try making a boot disc.
http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/#download
that is where you can download a boot disc creator that will make your OPERATING system runable from a CD. when you make this boot disc turn on your damaged computer put this disc in then restart your computer then barts OS should run from the cd. you can access your hard drive that way to check if your hard drive is ok if it is ok you probably have a mother board error or incompatibility which you should take to a repair shop about.restart press f8 rapidly when or if you to the screen that says safe mode etc GO down to last known good configuration and try that.Quote from: darkfire on August 01, 2007, 02:21:44 AM

Not sure what you mean here...he has a machine that won't boot and you're sending him into setup and then telling him to wipe his CMOS...
That's probably the last thing i would have someone try to recover from an unbootable drive.

There isn't a CMOS password issue either because he would have a password prompt onscreen if this were the case.

And lastly all of a sudden it may be a motherboard incompatibility...not likely on a machine that had been working fine.

Please give it some thought before throwing out suggestionsThanks for the advice. I was told by a friend to take the hard drive out and put it into a usb converter and see if the data is still good by plugging it into my labtop. Good idea?Actually if the drive is exhibiting any problems at all it's best to hook it up internally jumpered as a slave drive to try and rescue the data.
USB connections can be finicky at times and a troubled drive just multiplies the issues.

The jumpers to set it as slave are by the power/IDE connectors.
If the jumper settings are not listed on top of the drive visit the drive manuf. site for diagrams.

Obviously you want to do this in a known good working machine preferably with a burner so you can save your data.

After that post back and we'll walk you thru possibly fixing that drive if it's still serviceable.

But again at this point let's focus on retrieving your data...Update: Attached this drive as a slave to another computer and it seems to be fine. Must be the motherboard of the old computer. Guess I'll be doing some shopping now!

Thanks for the help. You have checked the data only.

May some problem with OS, did you check the safe mode option & last good configuration I agree, sometimes pressing f8 and choosing the last know configuration that worked does the trick. HuH ? ? ?

Usually RAM errors result only in:
Your computer not starting up at all
Or
Blue Screen of Death (or other variant errors)

Though, I do believe that a reinstall of Windows can solve anything..it is the ram i had to replace it and do a clean install and all my data was goneQuote from: seanbond on August 20, 2007, 02:55:51 PM

How would a RAM error result in this?
I think what you had was something different, but that can be decided later.
The issue seems to be resolved for now, are you sure you know what RAM is?

Solve : xp upgrade from windows millenium edition?

Answer»

i don't know if this is the right spot on the site to ask questions but i will anyway irecently upgraded from me to xp on a gateway computer with 17gb hard drive and when it was finished i installed norton internet security then i started getting a message from windows telling me that i didn't have enough virtual memory to run the system properly my question is how can i expand the virtual memory and make the system work properlyFirst of all...congratulations on your decision to go from Me to XP...wise decision...

Next...can you tell me how much memory is installed on your computer?

XP actually compensates for programs that use a lot of memory, so there is really no need to adjust your virtual memory settings, however, you may want to read below...

You may want to rethink your decision to use Norton Internet Security. I used to be a firm supporter of Norton products...and although they do the job, they are certainly memory resource hogs. In order to for your computer to function properly, after installing a Norton product, you'll have to purchase more memory in order for your PC's performance to improve. This is especially true after installing any Norton product.

My recommendation would be to find other alternatives to your decision to use Norton. There are free products out there that perform as well, if not better than, Norton products.

For example:

Antivirus: AVG Free Edition

Spyware: SpyBot SEARCH and Destroy

Firewall: Comodo

With the above in mind and your answer to how much memory you have installed on your computer...we'll be better SUITED to assist.

I hope you have found this INFORMATION useful...Virtual memory is stored on your harddrive, so, you'll need to free up some space. I used to have XP installed on a 20 gig drive, but to KEEP it comfortable I would place everything else on a seperate, larger drive.Quote from: Anodoin on August 11, 2007, 08:45:24 PM

Good point...

Another recommendation would be to just buy a larger hard drive like Anodoin recommended and do a clean install of XP on it. Hopefully you also have the Me CD, just in case the XP installation is looking for a previous version of Windows.

Solve : ***PLEASE*** Help me find a lost/hidden file.?

Answer»

Hi,

I need to find pornographic material that is deep in my Sony desktop PC.
(Purchased in late 2003) It has Windows XP. (Sorry, I am NOT computer savy) These files were originally found back in mid 2005, but
can no longer be found. (I thought they were spam, but after further knowledge,
I have found out they are NOT spam) They were strategically placed so they could
not be easily found. They were in yellow folders that were numbered, not named.
No one buy myself has had access to this PC so I know they have not been erased
or removed. I brought my PC to Best Buy to have the 'Geek Squad' have a peek but
they only open files that were in plain sight. (No help at all) I need these
pictures, files and websites for a court case. Because this matter contained
"Teen Porn", I will not allow my ex-husband see our 3 year old daughter. He says
he will not pay child support until he sees her. Anyway, what can you suggest I
do on a single, at home-mom budget with no child support? I do not have hundreds
of dollars to spend. Any and all suggestions will be very much appreciated.

*A concerned mom*

God bless & stay safe.
You might have problems finding the files, if the computer has been used for a while before they were deleted, but nevertheless:
http://www.recuva.com/
Free file recovery software.

If you really cant figure it out, dont use your computer, you are overwriting the files as we speak. You might want to find a file recovery business in your local area, call them first and find out how much it would cost to recover files that are not on a damaged disk, but have only been deleted from the recycle bin

(While you are at it, check the Recycle bin on your desktop) They were not deleted. They are just very, very hard to locate. I have had friends who are more computer savey try to find them but they have no luck. The FRIEND who found them, found them by accident after hours of searching. She has also moved very far away, so she can't help me. Best Buy found files that seemed very full but had a zipper on them. They tried to open them but the PC said they needed a password. My friend found them without a password so I know they are visible without one. Any other easy advice I might be able to try???

THANKS SO MUCH!!!!
Backup what data you need. format, and do a clean install."Back up what data you need"..... ??

I do not know what data I need cause I can not locate any of it. As far as the format & clean install... I am not sure I want to clean install anything. Sounds like I may make stuff disappear forever.

I am not that technical, guys. Please bear with me.

Anyone else have any THOUGHTS on how to find these files?Double click 'My Computer' and then go to Tools>Folder Options>View ans select "Show hidden files and folders'. ok ok etc.
Then go to Start>Search>For files and folders and see if the files can be found.
Do you know their names?Yes MomNEEDShelp try what Fed suggested. If you don't know the name of the files you can try and do searches for specific file types. You can try searches such as
"*.jpg", "*. bmp", "*.png" for different types of pictures.
Or "*.avi", "*.mpg", "*.mpeg", "*.wmv" for VIDEO. (note do the searches without the "".)

This way you'll probably get a lot of files so you'll need to look out for ones with suspicious names.

You could also try a pornography scanner like this one.
http://www.contentpurity.com/scaninfo.htm

I have no idea how effective it is but it seemed like something worth trying.

Oh and ignore Zylstra and patio's advices. The guys usually give great advice but I think they've been infected with a virus (or maybe they just need sleep). Thanks Fed & Deerpark.

Before I try any of this, are you all sure I won't delete anything? Again, I am looking for yellow folders that are numbered, NOT named. (About 14 files with thousands of XXX pics)

Can anyone be sure the Contentpurity.com website will NOT erase anything??

Sorry, I do not know how/where to start to do searches by jpg, bmp, pmg. These deeply hidden files are not going to show up by just opening files. (I don't think) Best Buy geeks and friends have already tried.

I think I am going to be successful with you guys on my side.

Keep up the good work & please try to answer the above questions I have.

Can't thank you all enough. No Contentpurity.com will not erase anything, you can be sure of that because it's the erasing part they want you to pay for. But I just had a chance right now to try it out and actually I don't think it will do you much good. It stops after only scanning a small number of files and then want you to pay. So just skip this scanner.

Searching for files are not going to erase anything and I think you should try this method. You never know what others might have missed.
If you try a search make sure you select "all files and folders". And under "More advanced options" make sure "Search system folders" and "Search hidden files and folders" are checked.Ok, Deerpark ....since you are so savey... )

Do I follow FEDS lead with:

Double click 'My Computer' and then go to Tools>Folder Options>View ans select "Show hidden files and folders'.
Then go to Start>Search>For files and folders and see if the files can be found.

Will I still be able to pull them up if the are not named? If you don't know the name of the files/folders the best way to find them would be to search using file extensions. Just use *. and type in the file extensions. If these were files that were downloaded from a porn site, it would be a good bet that they are pictures or movies. Deerpark listed some file extensions in a previous post. If you set up your search to show all hidden files you should find something quite quickly. After all, it's a hard drive, not the proverbial needle-in-a- haystack. Thanks Dave.

Can someone give me steps to get to the point where I can search for those files by extenisons?

(When I sviewed them, they looked like stamp size xxx pics probably from websites)

When I search thru these file extensions, how can I see the pics.....not just the address to it.

Tip: There are NO OTHER pics in this pc, if that helps anyone. Right click on My Computer and choose Search. Choose "Picture Music and Video" under the "What do you want to search for?" on the left pane. Check Pictures and Photos" and/or "Videos". Click Search. Quote

When I search thru these file extensions, how can I see the pics.....not just the address to it.
Choose Thumbnail from the View menu.

For hidden files choose "Use advanced search options" on the same pane under the "What do you want to search for?" option. Then "More advanced options" and check "Hidden folders and files".12,570 files appeared, but none were what I am looking for. (It was all sample pics, bullets, lines, logos and other crap that must have came with my computer) PC's hard drive is almost full. Can I delete them?

Boy, when I saw that large of a number for found files, I thought I was gonna owe you a BIG KISS!

Please guys, don't give up on me. I know what I am looking for is in there SOMEWHERE cause I saw it all with my own eyes. Hundreds of small sized xxx pics. If I can find this, I can show a JUDGE and keep this freak away from my baby. Without it, its just my word vs. his!!!!

PS: Not only was there xxx straight porn, but tranny porn & 100% gay porn!!! This man is SICK!

Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!Download CCleaner and run the cleaning section of it to clean out your internet cache, this is probably where most of those files are.

Then try running the search again.

Solve : Explorer.exe Won't Start?

Answer»

I am using a desktop with Windows XP SP2 with a Intel Celeron Processor.
RAM: 256 MB
HP Pavilion 520n
10 gb hard drive
OTHER INFO: It has worked before, this is not what happened RIGHT after installing the OS.
Whenever my computer starts, it starts with no desktop. No start menu, no programs, nothing. I hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete, create new task, and type in explorer.exe and it starts then immediatly closes. I have searched my computer for viruses, and spyware and found nothing. I have tried system restore and it did not work. I tried booting in safe MODE and the exact same thing happens. I tried booting from the last known good configuration, and the same thing happens, I can not start explorer.exe. Not to get confused, this is not Internet explorer, I can start internet explorer fine and browse my files through there but it would be a lot easier if I could get my desktop to start. I NEED to know if this is a problem with my registry or system files. I also need to know if there is a way to fix this without re-installing the operating system. If you need any other info, just ask.
ThanksFor starters, you have insufficient memory. You really need to upgrade that. While in safe mode, see if you can run msconfig. If so, stop any programs that load at startup (under the startup tab). You then need to stop any unnecessary services from starting. Interesting.I guess I must have overloaded my system (I kept hitting create new task, typing in explorer then hitting enter till it was up to 100 processes), but I got explorer.exe to open for a couple of minutes and I got a buffer ovverrun error. Explorer stays open until I close that error. I found a pic of it on the internet.

I cant remember the last time it worked, but from what I have been searching I believe I got hit by a massive hack. Run all your protection programs in safemode and then post back with a list of which programs they are.I ran AVG anti-spyware, and found a couple of things that I deleted. I ran AVG anti-virus, and it found nothing. I also ran ZoneAlarm Security Suite and searched for any spyware and viruses and it found nothing. My computer still doesn't work, and I searched the internet and found nothing on how to fix my computer with the problems that I have other than re-installing the OS. HELP I got some more info. I started my comp, and it has the Win98 theme. I tried changing it, but the only theme there was the windows classic theme. My internet connection also went dead. I looked at my connections, and I had no connections there. I tried to create a new connection and the connection wizard wouldn't open. I have to use a different computer to use the internet and post here. It would really be nice if my internet would work...Sounds like a wipe and reinstall to me Backup everything first.

Solve : Monitor Will Not Display Anything...HELP!!!!!?

Answer»

I have just recently been having this problem. I have about a 5 year old Dell computer, using Windows XP, and now, for some REASON, my monitor no longer displays anything. It is plugged in and attached to the computer, and the light shines green for about 5 seconds for the "No Signal" message to COME up, then the light turns amber. I have switched monitors so I KNOW that the problem must be in the computer, not the monitor. Solve : winXP Pro: move everything from drive C (5GB) to D (32GB)?

Answer»

Drice C (5GB) is 90% full and i do not EVEN have all the programs i would like. Drive D (32GB) is 90% free (have my pics on it); how do i switch or even combine? I tried moving Windows (using expolrere command) and it wouldnt move. Tried moving and even installins some programs on D but then they would't work. As i do not have a Win XP Pro install CD I am being CAUTIOUS as to not defunk my whole computer. Can anyone help me make better use of all the free space on D? thanks, TazThe programs don't work because Windows is looking for them in a specific location, and you moved them away. For the same reason you can't simply "move" the Windows directory, you'll have to reinstall. In the meantime though, install all your programs onto the D-drive, move any personal files you have (music, photos, etc.) to the d-drive, to free up space on the C-Drive.so basically i need to get a Win XP Pro install CD w/ COA (it didnt come with my pc) and install to OS on D. Then can I delete Windows from C, MAKING D the default drive?Quote from: tazblue68 on August 11, 2007, 07:58:19 PM

Tried moving and even installins some programs on D but then they would't work.
You should be able to install programs on D. What programs did you try this with and have trouble? I presume you're doing this via a normal installation procedure. When you start the installation, which will normally show a screen showing drive C as the drive on which the program will be installed by default, you must change the path, i.e. change C to D, and then proceed. Is that what you're doing when you try to install on D?I think an 80G HDD would be a good idea for you.
You can use the manuf. utilities that ship with a new drive to "clone" your existing C: drive to the 80G and plenty of space left over.
Then you can wipe the old drive after checking that everything is in working order and use it for storage space...

p.s. If it's Windows it likes to be on the C: drive anyways.I thought as I installed programs I had designated D but maybe I can try it again. Thanks to everyone who has helped.Quote from: patio on August 12, 2007, 08:47:01 AM
p.s. If it's Windows it likes to be on the C: drive anyways.

Not really true. I think this myth arose because most people seem to install Windows on the C: drive. Often because it's the only one they have. Usually when you buy a PC with Windows preinstalled it's on the C: drive or PARTITION. But it's not compulsory. When I installed XP in October 2001, I was already running Windows 98 SE from my C: drive. I had a second hard drive, and XP gave me the choice of installing over Windows 98 or of making a dual-boot install on drive D:. I chose the latter, and ran XP quite happily for 3 years until I got a new computer. Even when I abolished Windows 98 and made the C: drive a data drive, I never had any problems, except a few badly coded program installers whose writers obviously just assumed that everybody uses drive C:. Most apps read the registry or the %ProgramFiles% system variable and realised that D:\Program Files was the place to go.

Yes, earlier versions of Windows had to be on C but Win XP does not need to be. I don't know about Win 2k. i bought my pc off ebay and it already had Windows XP Pro installed and did not come with an install cd. i suppose my best option is to save some money and buy a Windows install cd. then i can install windows on D and use a wipe program to clean C and then my drives will be swapped.Having a Windows CD would definitely be a good thing. However, here's a suggestion for moving your OS to the larger drive without having a Windows CD. Can you backup the pictures on the larger drive to a CD or other external media so that you can format, i.e. erase, drive D? Hard drive makers have software tools to copy the full contents of one drive to another; such software is often put on CD and packaged with new hard drives. For example, Western Digital's Data Lifeguard Tools can do this, at least for Western Digital drives.

If you can use such software from one of the hard drive makers, you could copy your OS to your larger drive. Then, make it master, or C, and the smaller drive could then be used as a slave drive, i.e. D. thanks for all your help man. i will check out your suggestion.

Solve : Windows delayed write failed?

Answer» EVERYTIME i connect my external HD it works for like 5 min, then it gives me the following error: " windows - DELAYED write failed. Windows was unable to SAVE all the date for the file e:\Series\friday night lights. The data has been lost. This error may be caused by failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elseware." And another pop-up appears that says "could not find the specefied file - Make sure you specify the correct path and file name."

What must i do?All this means is that your usb connection is flaky. It happens to me all the time, what I usually do is just pull all all the cords restart the external hard drive a few times and try plug it into another usb port. It usually fixes it, but apart from that theres not much else I can suggest. But i have done that, but it still happens all the time? I have a new motherboard so the usb ports should be fine? Can it maybe be the casing it's in? Quote from: Annat on August 26, 2007, 03:59:04 AM

Solve : Safe mode boot.?

Answer»

Win XP Home SP.2.

I want to set up an unattended boot into Safe Mode but have been unable to FIND INSTRUCTIONS on how to automatically select the Administrator Account and respond Yes to the Safe Mode/System Restore options.

Any ideas please edit the boot.ini file and add /safeboot to the end of the first operating system line.Quote from: michaewlewis on August 20, 2007, 09:26:00 AM

edit the boot.ini file and add /safeboot to the end of the first operating system line.

Yes thanks, all that is already understood but still requires the Admin account to be selected and Yes on the Safe Mode/Restore WINDOW as Safe Mode boots.

What I want to do is for those two to be automatically selected and the Safe Mode boot complete without user intervention. Not sure how that could be done easily. I guess you would have to know a bit about programming. You could probably write something with visual basic or c++ that the autoexec.bat file calls before it STARTS anything else up, which would somehow bypass, or tell windows to not load the login screen.

Just out of curiosity, why do you want to do this?
Hmmm!! Autoexec.bat in NT

I can claim some proficiency in programming in C++, VB6 and even lowly Assembler but I don't have enough knowledge of the boot process to know what to attack.

To satisfy your curiosity. I often have the need to swap in and out of Safe/Normal Modes using different options in both modes. I have set this up using desktop icons which speeds the process (just one click, no Start>Turn off computer>Reboot press F8 etc) but get hung up on booting to Safe Mode because intervention is ALWAYS required. Hope this clarifies it a little for you.

Thanks for your interest. I don't really know a whole lot about the boot process either, I was just speaking theoretically, I guess.
Perhaps a good place to ask these questions would be the MSDN Forums.
What version of windows are you using? What kind of app are you developing?

Solve : Sharing & Security?

I'm really stumped. I have a folder that has SECURITY set so everyone can READ the files but can't save anything to the folder.

If I move a FILE from this folder to another folder where someone can read or write to the folder shouldn't the file pick up the security settings of the new folder?

I don't find that it is and I have to go in and manually set the new permissions for that file. I can't keep doing that because the NEXT move includes over 65,000 folders. What am I MISSING? What should I be looking at?

Solve : Messed up clicking?

Answer»

Hi all,

I am new to this question thing and am also fairly computer illiterate. Please be simple with me!!!

My problem is my mouse and clicking. When I use my back button, I go back two screens almost everytime. Then I use the forward button and go forward two screens. I do this back and forth until it works or I start again. I am clicking slowly, fast, waiting a few SECONDS, and I also have sped up and slowed down my mouse just incase this was the problem? Any ideas, this is driving me crazy. Another click problem is when I am in mail and wish to delete an item, it usually takes the item above or below with it? When I open mail and click out, often times it takes me back to desk top? Do I need a new mouse?
Thank you in advance for any advice. I really appreciate this.
RedwingGo to Control Panel/Mouse and make the neccessary adjustments to your double-clik speed...from what you have stated you want to slow it down from where it is now.I had EXACTLY the same thing with a Genius Webscroll optical mouse, after I had owned it for about 6 months. I only had to touch the left button and it would PRODUCE about 4 or 5 clicks. I did what the other person here suggested, and fooled around with double click sensitivity, that brought 5 clicks every time I touched it once, down to only 2 or 3. The final solution -- wait for it -- was to BUY A NEW MOUSE.

A BRAND new optical mouse that cost me £4.99 in UK money, $10.00 in DOLLAR$. Don't be a cheap skate.

Solve : HELP!! Blue Screen then laptop reboots, sometimes...?

Answer»

Ok, I, every now and again, mostly when I dont need it to, have a problem with my laptop shuttig down. What will happen is my screen goes blue and says a full screen worth of stuff. It bleeps on so fast then shuts down before I can read it. My computer will then reboot, sometimes. What I mean by this is that sometimes will reboot, and others take me to the safe-mode, etc OPTION screen. I can try clicking "safemode" "reboot normally" or "reboot last normal*(or something like that) screen" I am bout the stupidest computer guy ever! If it can go wrong, will happen to me. Any help would be awesome. OHH yeah, btw, sometimes at that safe mode screen when one works, it will say

"Windows could not start because of error in software
Please report this ploblem as: load DLLs for Kernel
Please contact your support person to report this problem"

Does that help any?

I have two other threads as well cause I have 2 other pc's and they are messed up to. Pls give them a look too.I think I have figured this one out. I had Norton and McAfee installed together and Norton said there was a problem and McAfee said all was good. Half way through the scan on Norton, that would happen. So...I uninstalled Norton and was good for a bit. Then it happened again. I have a 2003 Acura RSX drag car with Hondata Kpro on it, I can operate my car from my computer with this via USB. The Hondata was made for Windows 2000 and logo testing not made for XP, so I have deleted that and all is great. I just have to reinstall Hondata with the proper XP procedures. I have 2 other post threads and desparately need help on them, on is about how to uninstall Brave Sentry wo hooking up to the internet.Well, problem not solved, still does it. I have noticed when the laptop GETS a lil warm, it will do it, so I prop it up and it still does it sometimes. When I do a scan, bout halfway through it, it will shut down. BTW when I did a scan and deselected ANTIVIRUS, it ran all night and into the morning without shutting down. Anything guys?Well, since nobody else has an idea, MAYBE I can now help you if this occurs to you. I have found that when we put the laptop on our laps or couch or sit it flat, after awhile it will do this, then I found it was really hot. My fan doesnt come on all the time, and I think something is wrong with the fan. Anyone know how to change or reinstall one, or anything?Yes computers can do strange things when they get too hot. A laptop should always be sitting on a hard and flat surface when turned on by the way. Else you risk overheating.

Since you mention this is an older laptop it sounds likely that a fan is failing. If you tell us the make and model of the laptop someone might be able to give you instructions on how to change it.You should never have 2 Anti-virus applications on one machine...anti-spyware/malware are a different story.
What tends to happen is the 2 AV apps bang heads and cancel each other out or throw out a bunch of false positives because they are detecting each other.
There are many instances where one AV program will see the other as a threat and cause problems...
Pick the one you prefer and dump the other one.

Personally i'd get rid of both and grab AVG Free or Avast.
You're machine will thank you as they are both a little bloated by nature.

Solve : Adding Registry Key?

I can't add the registry key Control Panel to the this string; HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer. After running System File Checker the string now reads; HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions. I can add the key Control Panel to any key expect Internet Explorer. I can add a key with any number of characters to Internet Explorer as long as there is no space after the seventh character.

I have full control and I'm the administrator.

I'm thinking IE7 may have something to do with this, or perhaps McAfee or Spy SWEEPER is blocking this, I'm not a programmer.

Fresh install WIN XP Pro, SP2, all updates current
McAfee Security Center
Spy Sweeper
Trojan Hunter
Spyware BlasterWhy do you want to do this?I have a tweaking program call XP Smoker, http://www.xp-smoker.com/ , and it needs this key for the IE tweaks to WORK. I have CONTACTED the author of XP Smoker and he hasn't figured it out YET, and this is the first report of this problem. Had no problems with XP Smoker until the reinstall of Win and all the related updates.

I use Firefox 99.999% of the time, I would just like to know what is causing this and I have run out of ideas. They have a Help Forum...have you tried there ? ?

Solve : Computer repeatedly restarts itselfs?

Answer»

Hi,

I was playing on World of Warcraft and listening to iTunes, I was lagging really bad so I shut down all programmes, I was still lagging so I pressed Ctrl+Alt+Delete and found around 20applications running in the back ground. So I ran anti virus, it found no problems, so I restarted my comp, and now it wont turn back on.

I've tried starting it in Safe mode, last GOOD configuration, safe mode with network and the others, also I tried system recovery and my comp froze on the background of my desktop (no icons), it gets to the windows bit with the LOADING bar, a blue page flashes on, for like 0.5seconds, flashes off, and the computer RESTARTS. I've tried reinstalling windows but every time it FREEZES.

Anyone help please? Anyway of getting it onto desktop to do a system restore or anything?

Thanks in advance

Chrissounds like the hard drive is dieing.
put the hard drive into someone else's computer as a slave drive and backup all your files.Weird, its a not even a year old and I dont really use it much.

Thanks for your helpDoes your computer have a warranty? You might look into getting it fixed or replaced. What brand/model is it?
Sometimes bad components get missed at the factory and get sent out anyways. It doesn't really make the computer or manufacturer bad, it just points out that humans are running the plants.
problem could also be memory..... or power supply (but not likely that)
You could try a reinstall of your operating system and see if that CLEARS it up, also. Before you decide it's the HDD DLoad and run the diagnostics from the drive manuf. site to make sure...
Post back with the results.

Solve : Skipping during videogames?

Answer»

Any advice is welcomed by me, but how do i do a "video diagnostics" thing you were talking about? The problem still pursists here, and it seems to almost be worsening. I cleaned up my PC, i uninstalled the Halo trial, and tried a WWII flight simulator (IL2) that always worked perfectly fine before, and it still does the skipping thing.

But here's wierded, anyone played that "falling sand" game, it even skips on a game that simple. It does on an EMULATOR too, for SNES i tried running Super Mario World (i own the actually copy, i just did this to test) and it not only skips, but the frame rate plumits too...

I don't know what to do, i've cleared my PC of hundreds of old FILES, uninstalled dozens of unused things, a Defrag, and cleanup has been run, as well as spyware and virus checks.

Someone out there has to know what to do, i'd ask microsoft directly but the jerks charge money for help (go figure...)Quote from: lil_falco on August 10, 2007, 07:08:44 PM

I believe ram is your problem. End even though its the trial of Halo... ITS STILL HALO.

it's not the ram DUDE halo runs fine on my comp with 512mbOK i not very experience but i have to agree with the people that said it was the drivers... cuz something isn't working like it should... i would update ur drivers... to do this go to the manufacturer website i would go to ur graphics card manufactures website FIRST. i think that the problem because urs is better then mine and mine runs halo fine. i really don't think it's the ram......Ok, 1 again, i uninstalled halo and cleaned my PC up a bit anyway, and can't even run simple FLASH GAMES...... well they run, but the skipping occurs... 2, i tried updating my drivers, i went to control panel -> System-> hardware -> Device Manager, and right clicked everything and hit "Update driver..." only one needed it, and it wasn't Graphic Card related.....that still didn't FIX it....

This is driving me absolutely crazy, like out a window kill myself crazy! If no one knows, can someone at least direct me to someone who will?ok little update, things are STILL happening, and i've updated the graphics card driver itself, straight from their site, i tried using "end it all" before playing a game to get it to work, no such luck.

and guess what, no it does this on photo editing software such as paint.NET....

i'm seriously lost here people, i'm thinking of backing up my important files on a disk, then just doing a factory restore.... anyone else got any better ideas?

I work for a PUBLIC library that still has quite a few Windows NT 4.0 workstations. We house all of our children's video games on them, and we also have an administrator account and an account for the internet. Here's the problem....

Starting 4 days AGO, we received CALLS from our other branch libraries that their computers weren't working. I went to check it out, here's what's happening.... The computers will let you log into accounts, but then explorer.exe doesn't load. When you try to load Task Manger to load explorer.exe, Task manager doesn't load. So, all you get is the desktop background and nothing will load. I've tried doing the same thing in Safe Mode and it does not work either. We are in desperate need of HELP. I appreciate the advice in advance. Thanks!!Computers? more then one computer with the same problem. ? are they running off the server. Check the server. Update on more details. Yes, computers. This has happened on 5 computers and counting. It doesn't seem to make any sense. The computers are not connected to a server. They are just plugged up (out through) to the internet. I did notice that one computer seemed fine (the computer had been unplugged from the internet forever), but when I plugged it in and it got online the same thing happened to hit a day later. There are malware that shut down both Explorer and CONTROL Panel...what type of protection programs are run on these machines ? ?It very well could be a form of Spyware. We were running AVG Antivirus on the machines. Two were constantly plugged into the net and were working fine, but both started messing up on the same day. If I could at least get into the system I could do some snooping around, but explorer.exe will not load, and neither will Task Manager.Run the following in safemode with ( if you are using it ) system restore turned off:
Spybot
AdAware
AVG which you already have...
Stinger
AVG Anti-Spyware.

Shut down and re-boot each machine and see if Explorer is back.

Let us know. Here's the thing...I can't get explorer.exe or task manager if I'm trying to do a normal boot, or in safe mode. My plans were to check for spyware/malware in safe mode, but It is doing the same thing for both safe mode and normal.Quote from: patio on August 16, 2007, 07:49:24 PM

After doing this go to Start/Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter...you will need the appropiate XP CD and you will have to do each machine manually...

Operating system / antivirus & antispyware protection / service packs installed / when did it start happening / did it ever work right / installed any new software?

Alan <><

Thank you for responding.

The OS is Winxp.
AV antivirus software is installed.
ItThe XP was installed about a month ago; the problem has been there ever since.
Earlier, I was operating on Win98 and would inevitably face the "blue screen" after a few minutes. Now, after INSTALLING XP, normal work on the computer is ok. The problem surfaces ONLY when I go to the internet. I have tried IE, Opera and Firefox, but that has not made any difference.
Other than normal software like MS Office, Nero Express, Bitware, I have not installed any new software.
"I was operating on Win98 and would inevitably face the "blue screen" after a few minutes". Did you do a clean install of XP or did you do an upgrade?

The mistake you made is not resolving the problem you had before you installed XP. Now you've compounded the issue by installing another OS.

Alan <>< Thank you for your comments. In fact, when Win98 was troubling me, I had the entire hard disk formatted, loaded XP and also Win98 as a STANDBY. Now, when I work using Win98, the problem does not surface; however, in XP, I cannot use the internet for more than a minute or two.

Incidentally, In Win98, I am unable to use IE but only some other browser like Opera. Is your ISP dialup ,or DSL ETC...?It is a broadbank cable connection.Have you talked to your service provider ?

What internet browser?
Do you receive any error messages?
A link to the web page would also be helpful.I can't open a wepage. What could be the cause?

HilfieWelcome to the CH forums.

Google showed the following:

When you try and send pictures through e-mail, you should normally be given the option to make them smaller.
If this option is not available, a DLL file may NEED to be registered.

1. Start
2. Run
3. regsvr32 shimgvw.dll

Good luck

Solve : txtsetup.sif file corrupted... can i rebuild manually??

Answer»

I have WinXP home edition. Ive spent this entire weekend trying to fix this problem. "txtsetup.sif is missing or corrupted status 14" This error comes up in the boot process before i have a chance to f8 into safe mode. Last thing I did before I started getting this error was running an anti virus program.
I have a boot utility disk that allows me to view files and edit them. So i was able to verify that this file exists but I am guessing it got corrupted by deleting a virus attached to one of the files within the txtsetup.sif file. Any suggestions? Know of any bootcd / utilities that could at least get me into safe mode so i can try to utilize a restore point? Anything would be appreciatedHi edcorral.

You obviously did not bother to read my response to dnoonkest's post in the Dos forum in which you posed the same question here.

Here are a couple of extracts from the url I posted. (Here it is again.)

"List as much about your computer as possible. This includes operating system (what version of Windows you are using), service packs, computer make/model, RAM, hard drive, sound and video cards, current adware/spyware/virus programs being used on a regular basis, do you have a "real" Windows CD, etc."

and -

"You cannot give too much information. about the system. Withholding information seldom solves a problem quickly, if at all. Please don't expect us to drag information out of YOU to solve YOUR problem."

Also would like to know if your hardware includes a floppy drive and which anti-virus scan you ran and the name of the virus which was detected and which file was deleted.

We await your response.I have a sony Vaio PCV-RS520 , running win xp home sp2. 512 ram 160 gb hd partitioned into 2 drives. I use AVG and AD-Aware often. I do not know the name of the virus as I routinely delete any type of virus and really will only note it if it said it was untreatable. I use AVG and Ad-Aware. Since then I picked up Fix-It Utilities 7 because of the booting capability. This is how I am now able to at least edit and view files. My computer was preloaded with windows and I do not actually have a win xp CD. Although I have one from my Dell laptop and was able to get into the boot repair SECTION from the CD, but was unable to achieve anything.OK. The problem is most likely hardware RELATED and the likely suspects are ram and hdd.

If your 512mb ram is in multiple STICKS (say 2x256's) then remove one stick and reboot. If booting is not successful then swap the sticks and boot again. If again booting is not successful then replace the removed stick.

Take all precautions against electric shock and static discharge while working inside the box.

If your ram is just one stick then goto the Memtest86 site here and download the zipped iso file, unzip it and burn the iso to disc. Boot from the disc and let Memtest run for a while. If your ram fails to pass any test then it must be replaced.

To test the hdd goto the hdd manufacturers site and download/install/run the appropriate diagnostic software. Again you will have to burn this to disc. If your hdd is a Seagate or Maxtor the software can be downloaded from here.

If you have critical files on your hdd which have not been backed-up you might consider slaving the drive on another pc to copy those files for backup.

Good luckIll try that when i get home from work, I was thinking that it wasnt hardware related for the reason that it was working fine until I rebooted after my virus scan. But Ill give it a shot. There is no guarantee that the problem is hardware related, the file on disk may be corrupt, but hardware is a good starting point. Some instances of your problem have been cured by unplugging external peripherals such as usb drives. For some unexplained reason the boot process has been KNOWN to treat an external hdd as a floppy. The same error message but with a different status code has been displayed while trying to install XP using what turned out to be a defective cdrom. The causes/cures seem to be endless.

Here is just one discussion on another forum, you might like to read the many suggestions for a cure.

Good luck

Solve : Internet Options/Security/Restricted Sites?

Answer»

I have several websites in my Restricted Sites zone that have appeared from nowhere. I have been unable to remove them after highlighting and USING the Remove button. The site has a high security LEVEL, which is best, but I cannot alter it to see if the webpages can then be deleted. Most of the websites can stay but there are a couple I would LIKE to remove. Is there a setting that I can alter in Internet Options Advanced? I have Windows XP, SP2 and Zone ALARM.

Solve : slow downloading?

Answer»

I have a Dell computer runing XP, My connection is satalite dialup broadband, ( oxymooron) I show a sat. dialup speed of 49.2 Kbps and a connection speed of 100Mpbs. my system is pentium 4 2.4 ghz and 512 meg of ram. When I tewst my connection it says my download speed is 42.0 Kbps and upload is 300 Kpbs. The PROBLEM is that in fact the best I can achieve is 6.2 Kbps download. Prior to SOMEONE else mucking with my system while I was gone several months I was gettin about 19.5 Kbps . What6 is WRONG it is driving me crazy since a news vidio can take the better part of a day to download. Who mucked with it ? ?

Have you contacted your ISP and had them do a feed test ? ?You could take a look around on this site and it's forums.

http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks

Just run the test and choose the appropriate options and it will diagnose your SETTINGS and make recommendations. PERSONALLY it helped make my connection a bit faster. It also supplies applications to make the necessary changes. But as always, you should still contact your internet provider.

EDIT: woops, it says no satellite connections. You could look here though: http://www.dslreports.com/faq/satellite

Solve : Kernel Unable to initialize heap (Error message)?

Answer» HEY everyone, I got a laptop a bit back that I was trying to think of an operating system for it, and now none will install. I've tried the following operating systems: Windows 98, Windows 98se, Windows 2000pro, and Windows Xp Pro Sp2 and None of them worked! (I sort of suspected it with Xp because its not a good computer).

I'd LIKE to just install 98se on it but everytime after it says: "Copying files needed for Windows Setup" I get the "Kernel: Unable to initialize heap" error. I'm not sure what the problem is but if anyone can help me so I can finally use the computer I'd appreciate it greatly.

The Laptop:
Ibm Thinkpad I series 1452
Machine Number: 2611 452
Processor: Pentium II 366mhz (Celeron)
Hard Disk: 8063mb

Thanks,
Mike
Something odd is going on with my laptop and I have a feeling its going to be a hardware problem. Everytime I try booting 98se now I get a different error during Scan Disk..I would visit the MANUFACTURER's website & try to find a tool to test the HDD with.
You could also test the RAM with Memtest but I think the HDD may have a problem. The odd thing is we just purhcased the Hard Drive from a shop, so If it TURNS out its not WORKING we'll go ahead and return it. I'll go test the hard drive and ram now

Solve : Please Help Me (I don't know how to describe this problem)?

Answer»

Allright guys/girls, heres my problem.....

I purchased a dell dimension 8200 about 6-7 years ago
Its been through EVERYTHING, I use to take my aggresion out on it, but it never affected its performance. I kept it pretty clean using avg virus protection, ad aware, and spybot search and DESTROY. So internet garbage was never a problem. About a year ago, everytime I would start up my computer I would recieve two messages(These might not be word for word)
1. Your system cooling fan is not functioning properly
2. Your system battery is low.
I never went out and bought a new cooling fan instead I just placed a stand up fan behind my whole computer and it kept my computer running fine. Eventually my computer wouldn't turn on at all. I went to radioshack and purchased a new system battery and I got my computer to turn on again. The weird thing was the power button light on the front of my computer would have to "charge" almost. It would flash yellow, STARTING from a weak amount of light to a strong amount. None-the-less once the yellow light peaked my computer would turn on. About a week after I got the system battery though my computer quit turning on again. It still goes through the yellow light process and rarely it attempts to turn on but then immediatly shuts back off and starts the yellow light process all over again.

If anyone knows what the problem is please help me or if you need some more INFORMATION let me know and i'll do my best to describe it.

THANK YOU!Well understandably, because of it's age this computer is dying. I'd say the motherboard and or CPU have kicked the BUCKET. If you can't even get POSTing or see the BIOS there isn't really much you can do, aside from:

Cleaning and buying a new computer.Try swapping in a known working PSU of the same wattage or greater and see if things improve...The PSU is the power supply correct? My friend builds computers and he was telling me it could because of the power supply...Unfortunately he was also telling me because I use a dell that I would have to buy one directly from dell and it would run around $200.He would be wrong...yes you probably need a Dell unit but no it won't cost you $200.00

Solve : Windows XP Installation won't install/boot from HD?

Answer»

This has been one of the most frustrating two days I’ve had in a long time. My current installation of Windows XP Home has been moving slow and I decided to reinstall the software. Everything is backed up safely on my large internal HD and my external HD.

My computer: P4 3.0 Ghz, 1 MB RAM (dual channel), Gigabyte 8kN….(forgot exact number) Seagate SATA 160 Gb, Maxtor IDE 80 Gb, and Seagate IDE 300Mb, Genuine Windows XP home SP2

Essentially, my system won’t boot from the Hard Drive. I get either “cannot find OS” or CURRENTLY “NTLDR is missing” The details of what I’ve already tried and how I’ve gotten to where I am are listed below. Beware it’s long!

I unplugged the two older IDE drives which hold my back up data and proceeded to install XP to the newer SATA drive. This is the same drive that was my C drive with the same software for the last 6 months. After a few fits and starts I GOT through the main part of the installation and into XP. I started LOADING the chipset drivers from my Gigabyte MB. After these were done, on the last restart of the system, I plugged in the two other IDE drives so I could move files and install some of the backed up software.

This is where the real fun started. Upon rebooting the computer BIOS detected all my drives and just before windows is supposed to load, I got a “Cannot Find OS” message. Hmm, OK so I’ll just do the Windows installation again.

The problem was that I cannot get it to load again. I go through the same steps, it partitions the drive again, copies the setup files, and then it prompts me to remove any floppy discs and the computer reboots to finish the installation. But it never finishes! It starts the same process all over again.

I’ve tried reformatting, using the Seagate tools, wiping the MBP with various utilities, booting from floppies but I’m stuck in a loop. It never takes me to the info screen to set up the time, or input my name and product key etc.

So I go to sleep.

In the morning I decided to make the Maxtor IDE drive my boot drive. It’s always been a back up and never a boot drive. The SATA and the other 300 Gb are connected. The Windows installation goes smoothly and I’m in windows. I install my Silicon Image driver and the SATA shows up. I install the GigaRaid drive and the 300 Gb shows up. I can access files on both drives.

I rebooted the system without the windows CD in the drive (after changing the BIOS boot order back to HD >CD>FDD) and guess what? “cannot load OS” I put the disk back in went to the recovery console. I tried the following: “fixboot”, “fixmbr” Seagate tools to write 0’s to the boot track, another tool to erase the MBR. Each time I’ve tried to reinstall windows, I get either "cannot load OS” or in the latest attempt “ntldr not found” (I’ve tried to copy the file from the CD to the root directory with the same result.)

I’m at work now and have the CMOS battery out for my next round of tries. If you’ve made it this far, I’d appreciate any thoughts you might have.

Solve : my computer take hours to boot!!!?

Answer»

Hi, I recently upgraded my Hp Pavilion from windows ME to windows xp after I had restored it to factory settings in order to fix previous problems. I have done this routine before, but this time after I had reinstalled windows xp the computer has been having booting issues. It now takes SOMEWHERE between a hour to two hours to load xp. Although once it has loaded it works fine. Any help would be appreciated. I am at my wits end.
ThanksPost alot more info on the machine and what steps EXACTLY you did to upgrade it to XP and the posse will be along shortly.Ok, here I go. My machine is a five year old hp pavilion that originally had windows ME as an operating system. When I got it i upgraded it to xp and it worked fine for many years until it started to get slow then i used a hp recovery disk to reset it to factory settings and upgraded it again to xp and it worked fine. Well then another couple of years go by and i do the same thing again. Only this time after i got windows xp installed and restarted the computer wont boot properly. It gets as FAR as the hp screen then it just goes BLACK. Sometimes it boots but only after a couple of hours and sometimes not at all. Although once it has booted it works fine. Hope that helps. Thankstake that freaked out hard drive and REFORMAT it* just my opinion....

Solve : Computer screen flips out?

Answer»

Hey guys, if I'm in the wrong forum - sorry, I'm new. But I think Windows is causing this problem.

my boyfriend's laptop (an alienware, a few years old - don't remember the model) froze up randomly. Now, it wasn't being touched at all, but its screen would suddenly go into white/grey lines and boxes on the screen. I have a HUNCH this happened when it was transferring over to a screensaver - though it has only happened twice, and it's gone in and out of the screensaver fine most TIMES. It also displayed this screen for a moment when it was coming out of the screensaver today, though the other times the screen would freeze like that on its own with no imput. Anyone have similar experiences or advice? What Operating System are you using?
Could you tell us the GRAPHICS details?
(Click Start> Run> Type in: dxdiag )
(Wait for it to LOAD, and then click the Display tab, and tell us whats there)

When you move the laptop lid (screen) when this happens, what happens? (Just move it back and forward a few times, see if anything CHANGES)

Solve : How can I block Windows/MSN Live Messenger from my kids?

Answer»

Hello

We have three computers in our house, all three are HP and have Windows XP, one is a Pentium 4 and the other two are Pentium D. All three have Nortons 2007 antivirus program. The PROBLEM is that no matter how often I try to block programs like Windows/MSN Messenger and Live Messenger on the parental control section of Nortons, my children are still able to log in. Its very frustrating because I want them to get on with their homework but they are so sneaky and are still able to log on.

Can anyone suggest any other ways to block these programs.

Thank you.Can you set a password for norton? If you can, set the FIREWALL to black communications to/from msn messenger and then set a password that your kids can't guess, like "wb289r#jfn&[emailprotected]".
If you don't have the norton firewall with the antivirus, make windows firewall block access for msn messenger by going to the network connection properties. Open Control Panel -> Network Connections -> Local Area Connection -> Properties -> ADVANCED Tab -> Windows Firewall Settings -> Exceptions Tab. Once there, uncheck Windows Live Messenger.
If you have another firewall program, you'll have to figure out for yourself how to block programs. Hi Michaewlewis

Thank you for the advice, I will try to set the Nortons firewall to block it now and see if its successful when they come home from school today.

Regards Missy
Hi

Not sure if anyone will read this or not but anyway,

I clicked on my Nortons 2007, then "tasks and settings", then "change advanced settings", then "firewall protection settings", then "firewall program rules" which shows many programs which can be allowed, blocked etc. Anyway, for the program "Microsoft Windows Messenger" I set it to "block" however, my son was still able to just easily log in last night.

What does anyone think about this?

Missy
You'll probably have to block Windows Live messenger as well. How old are you're kids?

Has it occured to you that maybe they know more about computers than you and that they've anticipated you're every move?

Maybe they KNOW how to unblock messenger and live messenger from windows firewall or norton.

If i were you, i'd remove their ADMINISTRATOR priviledges, uninstall windows live messenger and the like, so they won't be able to re-install it.

However, they can always use webmessenger.msn.com

i don't think there's a way for you to block it if you're kids are smart.

But you could of course as a precaution TURN on pop-up blocker and use you're internet security settings to block webmessenger.msn.com

Solve : Deleting (unauthorised) locked files?

Answer»

Hi

Can anyone help me. My teenage sons are always one step AHEAD of me when it comes to installing games, programs, etc., when they should be doing their homework. Each time I work out how to delete or prevent them,my sons come up with something new to install and protect them.

For example, they have installed a program called 1st Security Agent and when I tried to delete it in "Add/Remove Programs", they have set a password so that I can't delete it. Can anyone tell me how to bypass this password in order to delete this program?

Also, when I did a "Search" for this program "1st Security Agent" and found it in C drive, when I attempted to delete it, a message came up saying its in a folder called "newlock.exe" and that it couldnt be deleted. So, I did a "Search" for the file "newlock.exe" and after I found it and attempted to delete it, again it said it was locked and I couldn't.

Please can anyone help me, I am really frustrated.

Thank you.Moveonboot from here is free..

Set up accounts without admin privileges for your offspring, see Limited Accounts here.

Good luckHi Dusty

Thanks for your help however, I am still having a little problem, would you mind helping out again.

I installed MoveonBoot and dragged the 1st Security Agent address from the "Search Results" into the MoveonBoot bar. It said that it would delete this file on my next boot. Anyway, I shut down the computer and then started it up again however, when I had a check the file was still in Add/Remove Programs. When I tried to remove it in Add/Remove Programs the same box came up saying "enter password". So it didn't work.

I tried another Search on this file and when it came up I again tried to delete it but the same box came up again saying "error deleting file or folder", "cannot delete newlock.exe:, access is denied", and "make sure the disc is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use".

The thing is, there is no disc in the computer and I am not currently using the file

What to do?

p.s. is boot the same as shutting down and then starting up again?

Yep, starting up is booting.

Have never heard of Moveonboot failing but here is another freebie which claims to unlock files.

Good luck with this one.

Hi Dusty

Thanks again for your help, its been excellent. ACTUALLY today when I checked, one of the locked files had GONE and I was easily able to delete the other one. So maybe it just NEEDED a couple of boots or something, I don't know, but anyway, their gone and its all thanks to your help.

Thank you.

Thanks for coming back at us to report your success Missy.

Just for future reference were you successful when using Moveonboot or Unlocker?

I agree CBMatt however, small problem. They are all (three of them) over 6 foot and I am just past 5foot 3inch so.... Maybe you could come over and sort them out for me!!

Besides, they are always one step ahead of me, ie. unlocking, locking, hiding, deleting, bypassing, etc., you name it they can do it. Its a constant battle between us to see who can get to the computers first and get the upper hand by UNDOING everything that the last person has just done.

But hey, you guys are my new weapons now, so they've been warned!

Hi Dusty,

Yes, it was the Moveonboot, I hadn't actually installed Unlocker yet. I was just about to when I thought I would have one last check and try, and it was successful with the Moveonboot. So, I'm thrilled!

Thanks again.

I have seen two different messages. One i cant remember and the other that says "Could not load VFD.FXD. Please run setup again. SYSTEM HALTED" Can anyone tell me wat that is that would be greatCan you BOOT in safemode ?You need to write down and post the entire error message...at this point it would be sheer guesswork.
More info on the machine and what happened prior to this would be good also...no i can not boot in safe mode.... i seems the other message is gone so the only one i get now READS " While INITIALIZING device VFBACKUP VFBACKUP could not load VFD.FXD. Please run setup again. SYSTEM HALTED"I'm sorry i made a mistake it is not VFD.FXD it is VFD.VXDCould be the HDD going a bit flakey or maybe the CMOS battery is flat

When you start your computer, you may receive the following error message:

VFBACKUP could not load VFD.VXD

CAUSE

The error message can be caused by one of the following:

•SCSI controllers

•Controllers that incorrectly assume maximum total physical memory of 16 megabytes (MB)

•Controllers that use their own DMA controller (as OPPOSED to one of the pre-defined DMA channels on the system board) and whose BIOS lacks support for Virtual DMA Services (VDS)

•A damaged or missing Vfd.vxd file in the Windows\System folder

RESOLUTION

Follow these steps to enable double-buffering support

1.At the MS-DOS prompt, type attrib -r -s -h c:\msdos.sys, and then press ENTER.

2.Type edit c:\msdos.sys, and then press ENTER.

3.Add the line DoubleBuffer=1 to the [Options] section of the Msdos.sys file, save the changes, and quit MS-DOS Editor.

4.At the MS-DOS prompt, type attrib +r +s +h c:\msdos.sys, and then press ENTER.

5.Restart the computer.

If following these steps does not resolve the behavior, repeat steps 1-5, and change the line in the Msdos.sys file to DoubleBuffer=2.

If the Vfd.vxd file is missing or damaged, extract a new copy from your original Windows disks or CD-ROM to the Windows\System folder.

have you got a boot floppy?

I would try to turn the machine on and let it sit with the error on the screen for about 1 day. Than do a reboot.

The error is because a system battery has lost its power from sitting un-used for a long time. Let it charge and than try to do some of the fixes listed here....

CMOS batteries charge ? ?

That's a new one on me....im not sure if i have a boot floppyTravel to bootdisk.com and DLoad the WinME bootdisk package...get the one with CDRom support.
Then unzip it to clean floppies and you should be good to go.

Solve : Bios Flashing on Dell Precision M70?

Answer» WELL apparently when they installed my new motherboard they did something wrong and my computer's bios reads lattitude 810 version a02 (I talked to one of the tech guys over the PHONE and they use the same motherboard for multiple latptops).
Anyway you can see how this would cause me problems (mainly video card issues), Ive downloaded the new bios but it wont let me run it or /forcetype it SAYS NOTICE!! RUNNING on an UNSUPPORTED system.
Occasionally I'll be able to boot up just fine but I cant run any games or anything that stresses the video card, and sometimes when i boot up it will be a mess of colors and lines and ill barely be able to see anything, and those times i cant even load into normal mode.
I dont have a floppy disk drive, i do have a cd burner and flash drive, is there anyway for me to get this bios to run?
Windows xp pro btw.If Dell messed up I can't see why you should have to fix it. Call them and demand they fix their mistake.
I would not recommend you flash that BIOS if the upgrade tells you the system isn't supported. I don't think that would go well and it could leave you with a very large paper weight.

In short, their mistake, their problem and keep on hassling them till they give in.

Solve : NEED A REGEDIT VARIABLE FOR THE DRIVE LETTER THAT THE OS IS INSTALLED ONTO..???

Answer»

IS THERE A VARIABLE I CAN USE WHEN I MAKE A REG FILE THAT SPECIFIES THE DRIVE LETTER THAT THE OS IS INSTALLED ONTO..

SOMETHING LIKE THIS:

Code: [Select]Windows Registry Editor VERSION 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"SYSTEM"="%SYSTEMDRIVE%\\SYSTEM\\SYSTEM.EXE"

BUT THE VARIABLE %SYSTEMDRIVE% REPRESENTS THE DRIVE LETTER THAT THE OS IS INSTALLED ONTO..
IS THERE ANYTHING LIKE THIS THAT I CAN USE...??Why would you need this? What is the problem you are trying to solve?

is there a way to do this or no,
need to install on many PC, use a variable just in case the OS is installed on a different drive other than C:\gumbaz, glad you found the caps lock key at last!

sorry for caps, i tend to write all my batch files in caps, and forget to turn it off after.

so is there a variable to do this or not..??what, you mean a variable like %systemdrive% ?

You surely know how to list all the system variables, why not do that on your own machine, and see if there is one that might be what you are looking for?

I just manually entered in the reg entries from the regedit..
I tried both %SystemDrive%\batch.exe and %HOMEDRIVE%\batch.exe
and they never startup the C:\batch.exe file when i log off and back on or Restart the PC..??
the batch.exe files code is just Code: [Select] start calcand calc never opens so what am i doing wrong, or will those variables just not work in regedit..??

No, system variables don't work in Regedit.

You could write and run the regedit file from batch using the %systemdrive% variable though.

I wasn't. Files that alter the registry are curious things to write for a hobby, aren't they?

Solve : Problems with MSVCRT.dll, flash9D.OCX?

Answer»

Okay, I am new here and I have to first say that I LOVE THIS SITE. It has helped me out a lot. I am having TROUBLE with opening certain web sites, like Yahoo, and Pogo, I get the "iexplorer has blah blah blahed MSVCRT.dll, it will now close" error every time. But last night I could access Yahoo and Pogo no problems. MySpace gives me the Flash9D.OCX error.

What could be going on? I have Windows ME. Thank you!!Add another one to the list

OLEAUT32.dll - happened trying to access elderscrolls.comDo you have MS Office installed on your machine?

One thing you can try is to check for updates from Microsoft...these errors are from OLDER DLL Libraries. Microsoft PUT out some updates to help prevent these errors.
