Solve : no array is defined - no hard disk detected?

Answer»

whilst unplugging an ethernet cable from the back of my machine I JOGGED the power cable which fizzed twice and turned off the machine.

Upon rebooting I received a message:

"scanning IDE drives.....
No Array is defined...
Press to enter FastBuild(tm) Utility or Press to continue booting"

after I press Esc I get a message saying "No Hard DRIVE is detected".
I've taken the harddrive out and had a look and a smell and i don't think anything has burned out. I only have one hard drive.

please help!Liam:

You may want to have someone with the technical expertise USE the FastBuild utility. The instructions are here:

http://help.nec-computers.com/eu/pib.asp?second=on&platform=instr_fastbuild_utility&layout=1411

And here are more links:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=%22FastBuild+utility%22&btnG=Search

As an alternative, you may want to contact NEC support for assistance in using the utility.

Regards,
Docthanks for the help. I FINALLY figured out that SOMEHOW my bios had been changed and had to change the RAID setting... strange stuff!

Solve : Bad colors?

Answer»

I am currently having AP roblem with Windows 98. Basically my colors are all garbled. Ordinary pictures look like they have been grayscaled in Photoshop and given an effect. The box that I'm typing this in right now has tons of dots. How can I fix this..because it's really getting on my nerves.First check your display properties by right clicking on your desktop and selecting properties. The click on the settings tab and check to make sure you aren't sitting on 16 colors (which is what it sounds like you are at at the MOMENT). If it is, drop the MENU and select a higher quality (16 bits, 32bits). If these options aren't here, you MAY have accidently uninstalled your video card drivers. In that case just go to the manufacturers WEBSITE and download the latest drivers.

Solve : windows xp oem?

Answer»

alryt i got a amd sempron 2200 BAREBONES system from frys. it had 128 mb ram, 40 gig hard drive, and a cdrom, all for 99 bucks. and the operating system "linspire" on it. i think it's linux. but yeah i wanted windows xp, so i bought a windows xp oem version disk from walmart. i tried to install it, but when i try to boot it up with it, it detects it, then asks if i want to boot from cd, then i get a blank screen. i tried to put my other computer's restore cd's and the windows xp one installed it, but then it wouldnt boot up with xp, it said there was a problem. so i know it can boot up. iduno what to do with this disk tho. or is it linux? do i need to delete stuff? this is the first computer i'm buiilding so it's very frustrating.
thanks for the helpp.Im pretty sure you're going to have to reformat the hard drive first, but you might want to wait for someone else to confirm this.Dale Salem...Well , it doesnt sound like you have any data stored on this pc ...so I would wipe the Hard drive clean and then do a clean install of Win XP .
Does this pc have a floppy drive ?

let US know

dl65 Looks like you may have to delete the old partitions with wxpboot.exe and then make new ones booting to the XP CD.

Is the XP CD GOOD and clean? I wash them in luke-warm water with a DROP of liquid soap and a soft sponge and then dry gently with a clean linen cloth to prevent there being any read errors when installing.

128Mb of RAM is a bit low for XP which really needs a minimum of 512Mb to perform properly.

Solve : Hard disk disappearance?

Answer»

I really really hope someone can help me with this because I'm lost for anything else to try and it's making me supremely depressed.

Okay, I run Windows XP. I have two hard disks, one 30 gig, which Windows is on, and one 60 gig, which I use for storing pretty MUCH everything (digital pics, music, my stories, my colored drawings, etc.).

I had to format the smaller drive recently because the viruses, adware, etc. were getting rediculous. Everything seemed to start after I did this, although it could be a coincidence.

My larger drive started to spontaneously go missing. It would be there, working fine, and then the next time I turned on my computer, it would be gone. I had it last night, so I did a bunch of DIFFERENT scans on it, but in order to try Scandisk, I was told to restart the computer, and when I did, the drive disappeared again. I've shut down and restarted a dozen times since then, but I can't get it back anymore.

It's being detected on startup, and when you enter Device Manger or Disk Management, it IS there; it just can't be seen in Windows, or ACCESSED through command prompt.

When looking at it through Disk Management, I found that it wasn't online, and was also showing "Unallocated". I simply right-clicked and chose the option to turn it online, but there was no option for "Allocate", no matter how hard I looked. Putting it "online" did nothing. I still can't find it. A friend of mine told me that the "Unallocated" thing is probably the problem, but I've searched and can't find any help as to how to allocate.

I was also told that the disk probably just needs to be formatted, but I just can't do that. There are GIGS of files on there that are absolutely IRREPLACEABLE: digital photos of relatives who have since passed away, art that I spend hours digitally coloring on the computer, books that I'm in the process of writing, not to mention many other random things.

All I want is to be able to get the drive up long enough to backup the most important files, but no matter what I try, I can't get it to come back again. Is there anything at all that I can do???what make is the 60 gig?? have you downloaded SP2? re-boot pc... now type sfc /scanow in the run box..it may work??is the 30 gig the master drive or is it the 60 gig...The 60 gig drive is a Maxtor 6Y060L0. I don't know what you mean by sp2. The 30 gig is the master drive and the 60 gig is the slave, but the 60 gig is where all of my files are. I'll try the sft/scanow thing and get back to you.Naw, it didn't help. Tracey Clarke..... "I had to format the smaller drive recently because the viruses, adware, etc. were getting rediculous. Everything seemed to start after I did this, although it could be a coincidence. " I can't understand how this situation can occur with all the good virus scanners and spyware/aware scanners ........
particularly if you have a lot of data which may not be able to be replaced......and no backup done. Moving on ....there are several things you might try .....If you are certain that your drive containing your operating system is 100 % virus free I would try using the system restore feature...... Start / All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore
Set the resore date to just before the problem started .....if that works .....then immediatly back up the info you dont want to loose.
The other thing you can do is ......remove the storage drive from that pc and install it in a friends pc as a slave .......make backups of your important data on that drive . Another thought just popped into my head......have you checked to be certain you don't have a loose or faulty IDE cable that connects to that drive . I also wonder if you have checked in the bios to be certain the drive in question shows up in there ?

let us know

dl65
Believe me, I know my own stupidity. Although, in my defense, I have a newer version of Norton, plus a copy of AdAware and Spybot, and my computer still managed to get infested with nasty things.

Negating my own defense, I'm one of those stupid people who never imagines that anything bad will happen to her files, so it never ever occured to me to make backups of anything. I am, in fact, a moron. -_-

That said, I tried the system restore and it didn't help. I can't install the drive in a friend's computer right at this moment in time, but may try it later this week. I did check to make sure the cables weren't loose, but I would have no idea how to tell if they were faulty. And lastly, the bios, disk manager, drive manager, etc, all show the drive as existing; I just can't get into it. >_<

If I can't get it working by the end of the night, I think I'm going to suck up my pride and head to Soundafex. There's a guy there who is a total computer genius. Maybe he can save my files somehow. -_-Hey, I just thought I'd let you guys know that when I turned my computer on this morning, the D drive had returned. I'm assuming that the thing is dying, so I am currently backing up everything that's on it in case it disappears again the next time I reboot. I'll bring it into the shop to find out if it's dead or what. Thanks for all the help though. ^_^ I'll know where to come next time I have an emergency.

Solve : WindowsXP-Total Freeze?

Answer»

On my other computer, Windows XP will boot but than it freezes totally. "Control, Alt, Delete" won't work. All I get is the hour glass when clicking on anything & nothing happens. I can't even do a normal shut down.

I went into safe mode and performed "last known good configuration" but that didn't help.

Is there anyway that I can get my files before I throw this thing in the garbage? What do you want to throw to garbage? Maybe I'll be there to catch it
Start in Safe Mode with NETWORK support. Copy all the things you need on the other computer.
I suppossed you have the 2 computers in a network.Do you have antivirus protection? It sounds like a virus to me...

[glb]Flame[/glb]Maybe you should REPAIR your installation of Windows XP.Also, start it up before you go to bed. When you wake up next morning, it should be ready. Then try to defragment your hard drive. What is the capacity of your hard drive? How much RAM do you have? You need 128 AT LEAST to RUN it, however, 256 RAM is suggested... I have 896 myself...

[glb]Flame[/glb]unplug pc from the net>>...then on boot hold the f8 key.and scan for bugs../spyware etc..something a spy program is trying to ACCESS your pc...when its attached to the net??disable system restore and then scan...Who cares about RAM if it is the same ammount as mine. I've got a GIG! I'm planning to get 4GB!Yes you can get to the files on the hard drive by taking it out of that computer and hook it to another one that boots up and connect it as a drive just like you would any CD drive you then can search that old drive to FIND any files you may want to keep or burn to CD. You can even print out any files that are on the drive. This is handy to know if any hard disk does not boot up, you will never lose data from a non bootable hard drive. Just connect it to another computer. People who do recovery do this and CHARGE heaps for the service.

Solve : windows-xp startup/shutdown?

Answer»

I have an hp laptop (512mem/1.7 processor).
When I startup, it takes about 2-3 minutes to get me to desktop, and about the same time to shut down.
When working or surfing the internet, the speed is good enough. How much RAM do you have?

[glb]Flame[/glb]512Put it into hibernation instead of shutting down/booting up every time it saves lots of time.

Right click on properties, click on screensaver, click on the power, then hibernate and advanced...How many programs START when you login to Windows after turning on the computer?

[glb]Flame[/glb]Hello how are you? When you had newly install your windows then did it ask you to "Activate" windows?
If yes then I think you ignore this message.
And now the trial periode of your installed copy of windows has expired. Try to buy new copy of windows XP from the market and install it from scratch.
I also have the same problem with windows XP Home Edition.

Hope this will solve your problem. Take care of you and others and be happy.
Bye...
Dur-E-Wahabhi all, and thanks for your answers.

The xp-pro, that I have on my laptop, was pre-installed on the laptop when I got it.(with service pack-1).
After a while I downloaded service pack-2.
I don't remember asking me to activate anything, but my program is registered, If that's what you mean "activate".
The MEMORY is 512mb, and the microprocessor 1.6.
I don't know how many programs are running, but when I go to the system configuration utility to fix the programs, I REALISE that I don't know what to do.
What I know for sure is that NORTON(antivirus, internet SECURITY & goback), are activated.
When I put it to hibernation, It switches "off" fast, but still takes time on starting-up.

Solve : cant copy data to dvd drive e?

Answer»

cant copy data to dvd drive e. iam using xp home, when igo to doc and setting and right click to send i find drive e(which is a short CUT )which i know is wrong. then it promps as E:\is not ACCESSIBLE incorrect function. what did i do wrong.pgj?i just checked in drive c, to send. when i open drive e.and display the properties it has e:\ as the target. the error message then says e:\ in target box is not vaild make sure the paths and files are corect?pjgIs this a DVD recorder you are trying to write to?
If so, are you not using your DVD recording SOFTWARE?It would help if you listed the drives on your computer:

A: Floppy
B: Floppy
C: Boot drive
D: Logical drive (partition)
E: Logical drive (partition)
F: Logical drive (partition)
G: DVD drive
H: CD-RW drive

And so on.

Type sendto in the run menu and see if there is a problem there.

I take it that your E: drive is for a DVD Burner?A: Floppy
C: local 13.9 g
D: local 92.8 g
e: cd ROM asuscd-s400/a
f: dvd pioneer dvr-106d
H: dvd sony dvdrw
i ran tosend it worked find, i put short cut of all the disk diver in the send menu(e,f,h) stlll get same message
e:\ in target box is not vaild make sure the paths and files are corect
i used to be able to right click any file sent to f to be copyed?Looks like you just need to change the target path from E:\ to F:\ or H:\. It should work just fine after that. I believe you've just been POINTING it to the wrong drive so just change the path and you should be fine.If you right-click the CD drives and open Properties which one(s) say(s) recording?

Are the Properties set properly?

Solve : fixing system restore?

Answer»

could some one tell me how to fix system restore on my computer? windows xp sp2 I have turned it off , then on again to no avail. there are no restore points, and I cannot create any either. I have no idea what could have caused this to happen.
thanks, KathyKathy_R.... Please read the following , it will explain .

If you manually turn System Restore off on the system drive, all restore points are deleted, and you receive the following warning message:
You have chosen to turn off System Restore. If you continue, all existing restore points will be deleted, and you will not be able to track and undo changes to your computer.
Do you want to turn off System Restore?
Yes No

If you manually turn System Restore off on any non-system drive, all restore points on that specific drive are deleted, and you receive the following warning message:
You have chosen to turn off System Restore on this drive. If you continue, you will not be able to track or undo harmful changes on this drive.
Do you want to turn off System Restore on this drive?
Yes No
When you turn System Restore on again on the system drive, it immediately creates a System Checkpoint. When you turn System Restore on again on a non-system drive, it does not immediately create a restore point on that drive, but monitoring resumes immediately on the drive.

What has occurred that requires the use of system restore ?

Let us know if you need more info .

dl65
Honestly, I do not REMEMBER disabling it in the first place. My computer was freezing up (still does) so I thought I would run sytem restore to try and fix anything that was causing the freeze ups. There were no restore points. I am running a virus program.
I was told to turn it off by unchecking the box, then restart pc, then GO back and check the box. nothing changed. It's like system restore is totally gone.Kathy_R .... First of all .......In my opinion , XP with SP2 is a very stable platform . If it is freezing up ......that suggests to me that something is wrong.......It could be a non compatible bit of software or a trojan ( which your anti virus may not identify ) , It may be some malicious bit of spyware or adware ........ It may be a 3rd party driver which isnt compatible ......
Are these freezes related to any particular app or just random ?

Now as far as the advice you were given re system restore .......as soon as you turn off system restore .......ALL RESTORE POINTS are deleted ............
In other words there are none .......simply turning the pc off and then restarting it and then turning back on the system restore points ........WILL NOT MAGICALLY bring back the restore points which where there before you deleted them .......They are gone forever ....... What does happen is once you enable system restore ....It creates a check point ( a starting point if you will ) then for example .....say tomorrow , when the next check point has been created .......you would be able to revert back to that exact time and date .
Unfortunately people SEEM to think that system restore will fix things like viruses , trojans and other infestation of pests .........This isnt the case .........
Perhaps you could list the apps you regularly run to control ..........
Viruses .........
Spyware .......
Adware ........
Trojans.........
Hijackers .....

Again ...to the best of my limited knowledge there is no one utility out there which will look after all those pests.

We may however be able to suggest some apps which will assist you in keeping your pc running smoothly.

let us know

dl65
KATHY:

DL is right. Also (this happened to me once) if your hard drive (or one of the logical drives on your hard drive) is running out of space, System Restore will not have enough room on the drive to store data. This may also explain the diminished performance.

To check if this is a possibility, double-click My Computer, right-click Local Disk (C:), choose Properties, and tell us the size of the Used Space and the size of the Free Space.

Regards,
Docno need for system restore........f8 on boot chose last good config........it replaces system restore......or the/reg/ sfc/scannow cmds......in the cmd prompt.....or more info here onm system restore>http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_restore.htmOn my local hard drive C I have 22.0 GB Used and 52.4 GB free space. Quote

On my local hard drive C I have 22.0 GB Used and 52.4 GB free space.

Sounds like an 80Gb drive with 74.5Gb of usable space all in one partition.

You should use 512Mb of RAM or more for XP and you should be running anti-Trojan scans with AdAware SE, SpyBot SD & be using SpywareBlaster to protect your system.

It would be better to partition the drive in my experience. I have a 10Gb drive C: and place the My Documents and Email folders on the D: drive, the Music on the E: drive and use the F: drive for Archive material.

If you look at Kathy's Korner you may find tips on repairing System Restore, but the best safeguard is to have a drive image to restore to, hence the smaller C: drive recommendation.

So why the hanging? Too little RAM or a program fault? If you run the anti-Trojan scanners you'll soon see if there is a problem.

You could also try cleaning up the drive which might help.

If you run Disk-Cleanup first of all and then install and run CCLeaner you will already remove a lot of obsolete junk files.

Then, if you unhide hidden files and folders you can also delete all of the $NTUninstaller$ files and CAREFULLY remove their entries in Add-Remove programs.

Then remove the following:

The contents of the C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Installations folder.

The contents of the C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download , folder.

And the contents of the C:\WINDOWS\Temp folder.

To make some more room. then run chkdsk and defrag.

You might then consider using a Partition resizing program to shrink your 80Gb drive down to a reasonable size to make it easier to maintain and to image.Found this on the Elder Geek's site:

Re-Enabling System Restore

One of the tips that was widely circulated on the net when XP Professional was first released involved disabling System Restore via Group Policy Editor. It certainly works, but a problem arises if you want to re-enable System Restore at a later date. There is no option to re-enable it again. To do so:

Start the Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc)
Navigate to Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/System/System Restore
Set Turn off System Restore and Turn off Configuration to Disable
Right click on My Computer and Select Manage
Navigate to Services and Applications/Services
Navigate to System Restore Service and double click
On the General tab set [Startup Type] to Automatic using the drop down list
Click the Start button to start the service
Close the Computer Management console
Return to System Restore in Group Policy Editor and configure both to Not Configured
Close Group Policy Editor and reboot the system.

After the reboot is complete, right click My Computer, select Properties and the tab for System Restore will have been restored. Configure it to your individual needs.

Elder GeekMac, I downloaded CCLeaner, however I did not run it.
It appears that it wants to delete almost everything. How do I set this up so that I have not completly wiped
everything out?

Solve : IE pop ups?

Answer»

Hi..

My friend came to me, with his laptop, and when you opened IE, it was just loads of junk pop-ups, and impossible to close them all!!
(He just looks at all things indiscriminantly cos he is not too hot on computers!! - and therefore picks up loads of crap)

So I downloaded an alternative BROWSER, and spybot and adware etc and service pack 2 (he is running XP home edition).... and also an up-to-date antivirus software.

I ran them all a few times, and they each obviously picked up lots of problems. So afterwards, it all seems to be running ok, with the new browser, but if you open IE, you still get alll the same weird junk (virus?) pop ups.

I was thinking of deleting IE, and maybe downloading it again or something... would this help at all?

And if not... what would?

Many thanks for any replies posted.
Kop442000If it isn't picked up by adware then it probably has an uninstaller. try going through ad remove programs and removing anything with tool bar, hot and xxx in the name or anything he doesn't recognise and you know isn't important (you seem like the kind that can do that)

good luck and tell US how it goesThanks for the reply!

I will have a check, but off the top of my head, I do REMEMBER some kind of toolbar that I didn't recognise in the programs list.

Thanks again!
Kop442000By the way. If you did DECIDE to unistall IE and REINSTALL it it wouldn't make any difference to your current problem. i would however recomend having your friend use mozilla firefox as his main browser, keep IE installed as some programs still like it.

Solve : Can't Wake my system up in Sleep mode?

Answer»

-----------------Help- -Help- ???Help-------------------------

My computer is in sleep mod, i can't wake it up because the mouse and the keyboard DONT work.

I tried to put in a new keyboard and mouse but it still dosn't work. When i put in the new keyboard, the keyboard tells me that it's a sleep

----------Any Help Will be greatly Appreciated----------------Montiro:

Does this happen every time you turn on your computer? Does this happen immediately, or are you able to use the computer for awhile before it goes into sleep mode?

Regards,
Doc

No, I am not able to use my computer. it goes off to sleep mode instantly. I don't have anything on the screen. the button to turn on the monitor and the pc is orange. Indicating that it is in sleep.Montiro:

Try this: Restart your computer and listen to the hard drive. When it stops making noise, Windows should be done loading. Then, push the power button on the monitor to turn it off, wait 10 seconds, then turn the monitor back on.

Let us know how it goes.
DocI tried what you suggested but that didn't work. I think that there is nothing going to the computer. Everything works, but i think the mother board is not reciving a signal. From any of the componets.
Montiro:

Were there any changes made just prior to this happening? (For example, did you add a new video card or other expansion card? Did you install a new program or new device drivers?)

Have you tried adjusting the brightness and contrast on the monitor itself? (there should be buttons or dials to allow you to do this).

Have you checked that the DATA cable and power cable are both connected firmly to the monitor and to the computer?

Do you see the memory test and other information appear on the monitor when you first turn the computer on (before Windows loads), or does the monitor STAY black with no white letters or numbers appearing at all?

Does the computer give any beep tones? (normally, it will beep just once if no problems are found, but more than once if there is a problems with a HARDWARE device).

Do you have another monitor that you may try to use with this computer? Or, do you have a friend who has a computer who will let you try your monitor with her computer? (If another monitor works on your computer or your monitor will not work on another computer, then you may have to replace your monitor).

Solve : Initial Cold Boot Screen Resolution Error?

Answer» HELLO out there!
On intial cold boot my system appears to load fine, however the screen resolution sets to 640 x 480. If I shut down and restart again the resolution corrects itself to 1024 x 768. If I try a hot boot the resolution does not correct itself. Any ideas as to why?
I've tried investigating the config.sys file and BIOS but I cann't see anything displaying an error.

I'm sure it will be something simple, but it's only easy if you know how!

Much obliged if any one can help! run a test on the GRAPHICS card and drivers......type dxdiag in the run box........does your KEYBOARD //movse play-up......also check the cable from the tower/desktop......to monitor....it maybe loose..*caution when playing with this option** esd**Thanks for that.

Checked all cables; monitor is hardwired and screw fixed connector to the tower unit is secure.

Running the dxdiag shows a note on DX Media FILES tab...file iac25_32.ax is a beta version, which is unsupported and could cause problems...
No problems found on any other tab. The test DIRECT Draw & Direct3D work fine.

Could the iac25_32.ax be the source of the problem?what directx version are you using........have you tried updating your graphic card drivers.....You can bet on this type of failure being due to a bad connection. If you have checked everything, reseated memory modules and call cards, it is likely to be a cold solder joint on the mother board. In that case it is non repairable.OOOOPS! This not where I meant put this. Sorry!Direct X version is 7.0 (4.07.00.0700).

I have reloaded the driver from the disk in the past, but it has not made any difference. I think the driver is ATI2DRAA.DRV. I could not see ATI listed on the driver listing page?

A short repeat delay means the computer will not wait long before repeating a character when you press and HOLD down a key. That does not appear to be your problem.

You wrote, "when I'm typing...my cursor hesitates which causes missing characters." What exactly do you mean by "my cursor hesitates"? Do you mean you press a key and the character does not immediately appear on the monitor? If this is what you mean, then does this happen with just certain characters, or with every key you press?

Let us know,
DocHi Doc,
Thanks for replying. It happens with every key. For example, while I am typing now, every key I press shows up on my screen... but during the hesitation the screen won't catch up to the keys i've pressed and will kick in maybe 5 or 6 keystrokes later but won't include the keys I was pressing during the hesitation.

For example, below i repeated typing the same words over and over again "do you see what i mean". Look at the last LINE, the characters 'an do' of the sentance are missing. They were typed but did not show up ... this is when the computer/cursor was hesitating.

Here's an example:
do you see what i mean do you see what i mean do you see what i mean do you see what i mean do you see what i mean do you see what i mean do you see what i mean do yo see what i mean do you see what i mean do you see what i mean do you see what i mean do you see what i mean do you see what i mean do you see what i me you see what i mean

I might add, i've just bought this computer.. a Compaq Presario and it's been happening since I bought it.

ARGH!Laurette:

Three things we may check: Accessibility Options, keyboard drivers, and the keyboard.

To check Accessibility Options, open the Control Panel and double-click the applet with this name; select the Keyboard tab; MAKE sure "Use StickyKeys" and "Use FilterKeys" are not checked; if they are checked, remove the checkmarks and click apply and OK.

Regards,
DocHi Doc, Thanks for helping me.
Well, i went to Accessibility options and nothing is checked off.

Could it be a program doing something in the background every 3 or 4 minutes?

Argh! :-/read more>>near the bottom of the link>>http://goinside.com/03/2/3015.htmlLB:

Two questions:

Has this keyboard ever worked without any problems?

If it worked before, what has changed just prior to the problem? (Did you spill something on the keyboard? Did you install a NEW program or new expansion card?)

Solve : Partition Corruption?

Answer»

Ok Its fairly simple to explain and im wondering if you can help me get back what I "lost"
The thing is :

I have a Pentium 4 2.8 HT chip with 1 Gb RAM and 200 GB WD HD that I build myself and used without problems until windows stated acting kinda weirs( the search only showed the little dog and NONE if the options andf other minimal stuff)

I created on my 200 GB HD a 60Gb partition with partition magic 8 It created it and the computer recognized it as another HARD drive (G:/)as its supposed to

I placed very important stuff I needed in that partition and to make sure they worked I used those documents from the 60 Gb partition (G:/) and they worked I heard the SONGS I worked on some Designs (Im a graphic artist)from the G:/ partition. The thing is I reinstalled Windows XP on the original (C:/) drive becaused it had some problems. When I installed windows I selected to install it on the C:/ partition it started then it ran a check disk on the (G:/)drive and it "recovered orphaned files" it took a long time for that then it continued to install windows the thing is when it finished installing windows I went to check the data on the (G:/) partition and it still there, all the files, all the songs, the pictures, the text files but they dont work its like all the data became corrupt.

The only thing it opens are the simple text files everything else is corrupt the pictures dont work, the songs do not run, the program installers I placed on the partition dont work and everything has the same size in Mb or Kb but its like all the data (except for the simple text files) went bad
and I can navigate thru the folders in partition (G:/) and see al the files but as far as ACCESSING the data is all for NAUGHT the pictures dont have previews the html documents are all filled with strange characters nothing is usable I need help What do you recommendArmando:

Have you tried to copy some of the files to the C: drive?

Solve : slaving passworded hard drive?

Answer»

hi my name is mike and i'm a dumbass. i recently moved to ontario from bc and brought my hard drive with me to salve into a buddy's comp. i can't access my documents and settings now because i had a user password on my comp. i can't use it as a master drive because i didn't bring my xp copy home with me. anyway to START xp form a slaved drive or acess the admiistrator tools from a different window xp. please and thanks[size=48]Banzaiii![/size][/b]

Aaaaah, Sorry. I had a John Belushi flashback for a moment, there. Something about a Samurai sword splitting a BSOD in half with a satisfying smash and flames. I'm OK now (i THINK).

I'm not sure what you're trying to do, Bob. You may not be an unintelligent mule, but you are an unintelligible one.

Do you mean to say you want to add your hard drive to a friend's computer as a slave (with his hard drive as the master) so that he will be able to copy your files to his hard drive?

Let us know,
Doc

hi:

yes, that is what i am trying to do. i have HTE hard drive slaved in now, but cannot access my documents and settings folder because it was passworded.

thanksSamurai:

I'm not sure what you mean by the WORDS "pass worded." When your friend boots to her desktop, does your hard drive show up in My Computer?

If so, describe what happens when you double-click on it. If you are able to access the drive, then what happens when you navigate to your My Documents folder and try to open it? If you get an error message, exactly what does the message say?
Did you mean you tried to access data in your profile from your hdd? E.g Documents and Settings\"your profile"?
If you have choose to go private while the hdd was still in your puter before you moved then you'll have to bootup with your hdd using your own login and password, copy your data out of your profile to a folder in C:\ root then you can try slave it in again. Cigarman:

Exactly! any folders that are encrypted will not be accessible from any other computer.

I'm guessing that this is really what our Canadian friend means when he says the hard drive is password protected.

Solve : Files that are copied from cd.......?

Answer»

Hi there! I had a question that I hope someone could help me with.

I have a large amount of files on cd that have filenames in lowercase, except for the first letter which is capitalized.

Now, when I copy the files from the cd onto the computer the entire filename is capitalized.

For example:

File on cd: "SHIN megami tensei nocturne gameshark codes.txt"

File on hard drive after being copied from cd: "SHIN MEGAMI TENSEI NOCTURNE GAMESHARK CODES.txt"

This may be trivial to some people, but it's just really annoying for me and kinda hard on the eyes to see everything in capitals. Is there anything I can do to fix this so that files that are copied appear exactly as the original? (I can take the easy way out and just rename them, but this can be a huge time consumer).

I have Windows ME 850MHz, 128MB SDRAM. HP CD-Writer+ 9100b

Thank you!Are all the files on your hard drive showing upper case or just those copied from the CD?

If you rename them does it stick or revert back to upper case?

Does it happen when you copy from all CDs or just this particular one?

How are you copying the files?

Are you sure the files on the CD are actually in mixed case and it is just not the "presentation" of the files that makes them appear to be mixed case?

Here's the answers in order of the questions:

1) Just the ones being copied from the cd to the hard drive are being capitalized.

2) If I rename the files, it sticks.

3) It happens with all cd's.

4) I copy the files within windows, and just drag them onto the desktop or any other place I put them on the pc.

5) I don't quite understand what you mean by mixed case. If you mean it looks like: "ShiN mEgAMi tEnSEi NoCtUrNe GaMeShARK CoDeS.txt", then no the filenames do not look like that on the cd. They look normal (lowercase), with usually the first letter in the filename being capitalized only. Quote

4) I copy the files within windows, and just drag them onto the desktop or any other place I put them on the pc.

Just a quick addtion here. I have a windows explorer window open, or I double click "My Computer" on the desktop, and select the cd (drive) and then the folder on the cd with the contents I need to copy. I then just drag and drop the files needed to be copied. Quote

3) It happens with all cd's.

I just rechecked this and this is incorrect. The cd's this is happening on are CD-RW's that are used with Direct CD. The files on the cd's that are copied to the hard drive are having their filenames fully captitalized upon being stored on the pc. I did a test with a CD-R that was CREATED recently and when I transfer a file with that, the filename stays the same and isn't fully capitalized.

Further, let's say I have a folder on one of the CD-RW's and there is a file in there. If I copy the folder over, the folder's filename will be fully capitalized upon being copied to the hard drive and the file's name in that folder remains normal. But if I just copy the file itself, then upon being copied the filename is fully capitalized when reaching the hard drive.

I hope I haven't confused anyone. Good answers by the way.

What software are you using to create the CD-RWs?

I'm using Adaptec Direct CD. I can drag and drop files onto the cd this way as opposed to having to use a cd burning program to write over the cd only at one time.Is that an old version of Adaptec or a new one that Sonic produces for them?

You need to CHECK your options in the CD writing software to determine things like file system, MODE, etc.

It's Adaptec DirectCD version 3.0.And I don't use cd writing software for the CD-RW's, so there aren't any options to alter at all. I format them using Adaptec Direct CD v3.0 and then just drag and drop files onto the cd using windows explorer. What results do you get if.You open the data cd<right -click on cd disk > with something like notepad..........wordpad.....word..etc. .you could edit them.........and them send them to say my documents>>etc...Well, I tried that and what ever the original file is named as is EXACTLY as it is saved to the hard drive. So that METHOD DOES work, but is impractical for multiple files if you have to save them all that way to prevent the error from occuring, and I have a cd FULL of .txt files and that would take ages to fix that way.

Also, for files that cannot be opened by notepad such as .zip, .rar, .exe etc you couldn't use the above method, but just a similar one specific to the files themselves, I suppose.

Solve : Anyone use Windows XP Media Center Edition??

Answer»

Hoping someone familiar with Windows XP MCE can help...

I'm looking to buy a new desktop that has everything I want, BUT... it comes preloaded with Windows XP MCE -- which I'm not at all familiar with. So, I did some searching online and through Microsoft's site, but couldn't find ANSWERS to two specific questions that I had.

1. I keep READING things like "the only difference between Windows XP Pro and XP MCE is that with MCE you cannot connect to a corporate domain." I've also read complicated stuff about MCE and wireless networking. What I want to know is: Can I still use my LinkSys wireless card to connect an XP MCE machine to my wireless router (which is CONNECTED to the internet via a cable modem)?

2. If for some reason I just don't like Windows XP MCE, can I just re-format the DRIVES and install a copy of XP Pro? I mean, I know I can, but can anyone foresee any complications that I might encounter, perhaps having to do with XP Pro support for a TV tuner or other things which would come standard with a "media center" PC?

Thanks for any help or ADVICE you could offer.

Sincerely,

~ Ryan S.

Solve : going into safe mode or last known?

Answer»

I TRIED to delete a file that is giving us viruses and popups. Ever since I did now I can't get back into windows. It just keeps restarting. I have tried going into safe mode and last known, but it STILL will not work. What else can I do?Holly:

More information, please.

What file did you delete? What OS does your computer have installed?

DocI have an XP Laptop. The file I was trying to delete was some program my roommate was downloading offline. It seemed like it was some XP word/excel thing. There were like 10 different programs in the add/remove section.Holly:

Do you have an anti-virus program installed on the laptop?

Docyes, and it would not recognize any problems with the program I tried to delete. I have the new norton antivirus. Is there a better one?Norton is one of the best, but anti-virus program catches them all.

How did you know you had a virus? Did Norton AV detect it?

DocHi Look up Stinger on google and down load it to a floppy and then reboot with the floppy in it usually works it is a virus checker and cleaner, sorry forgot where to go to get but google will find it. By the way I suggest you change your antivirus checker to AVG free or Professional.Norton did not detect it but some programs were not WORKING and my roommate was on a spam website trying to get cheat codes for the program above (xp things). How do I get into my windows screen? Is safe mode and last known the only ways to get in? I am sorry but this has never happened to me.Holly:

It looks like files that Windows needs to boot are missing or corrupted. My suggested TREATMENT is to reinstall the operating system, as this Microsoft article explains:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315341

The steps to follow are also here:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/doug92.mspx

The steps are:

1. Configure your computer to start from the CD-ROM drive.

2. Insert your Windows XP Setup CD, and restart your computer.

3. When the Press any key to boot from CD message is displayed on your screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.

4. Press ENTER when you see the message To setup Windows XP now, and then press ENTER displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen.

5. Do not choose the option to press R to use the Recovery Console.

6. In the Windows XP Licensing Agreement, press F8 to agree to the license agreement.

7. Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in the box, and then press R to repair Windows XP.

8. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete Setup.

For step #1 you might have to change the BIOS settings. But first, start with step #2. If you see the words "Press any key to boot to the CD..." then you don't have to do step #1.

Let us know if you need help.

Good luck!

Solve : ANTI VIRUS SOFTWARE HELP PLEASE?

Answer»

I've recently been having extensive trouble with my legitimate and up to date copy of North Anti Virus 2003 and its Internet Protection program. It's recently been interfeering with my MSN and Yahoo Messangers, and constantly gives me a 'security alert' POP up window informing me that 'virus protection is off'.

In an attempt to resolve the issue, I unistalled the programs and reinstalled them but the problems have remained. I can not ENABLE the virus protection as I've deleted the shortcuts from my START menu and have failed to open the program up. When I did manage to load the program up, and use my supervisor account to enable the protection, the setting wouldn't stick on a system restart.

I'm at the point now where I want to unintall the program and go with another anti virus package. However, my start menu icons are still deleted, and on going to 'add/remove' in the control panel, I'm told I need to run the program from the start menu, and log in to my supervisor user account first.

I've search with my computer to try and find an icon which will load the program, but i've had no joy.

Please help, Thanks. My Norton AV is running out at the end of March and I'm going with AVG which is free and ranked higher than Norton for AV programs.SuperDave:

Have you tried turing off virus scanning of messenger in the Norton Anti-virus options?

Solve : Saving video settings?

I'm running XP professional and have changed the video setting to the larger setting but when my daughter logs on to her sight she wants to make it smaller. Does anyone know how to save these SETTINGS as we have to keep adjusting them at log on as they don't seem to save them in each profile. It also moves all the icons around each time we ADJUST the video setting.
Thanxeastcoastfun.....Well probably the best way would be to CREATE a user account for your daughter......that way she can have her desktop set up as she wants it ......You of course would be the administrator and your desktop would be as you WANT it to be .......

Go into control panel and select USER ACCOUNTS ....then set it up from there .

Hope this helps you

dl65 Thanks but i tried that ALREADY and it still doesn't save the video display settings. I guess when you change the resolution settings there is no way to save it to your user account.

I'd never recommend refilling printer cartridges, but that's just my own opinion. If you do refill them, make SURE you get the correct type of ink for your printer (the inks come in different DENSITIES), so stick with a supplier you know & trust.

Also, people in the know tell me they should never be refilled more than three times.

How many times have you refilled this one COLOR cartridge?

Solve : copying saved system to a new pc?

Answer»

Hi Thanks for the great help!

If I have a saved image file of a c: system partition (XP)and I got another pc, could I format the c: drive of the new pc or create another partition on it and then restore the system from the other pc?

If the drivers are different between the TWO pc's won't
XP update them during the boot?

I can't REALLY help with your particular problem (never PARTITIONED before - I don't think it's worth splitting up my 3GB drive...) but can you not just yank out the HDD and fit it as a slave in your new one?

You'll then be able to access the files on both, and if you wanted to reformat that drive you'll have extra space (perhaps it may be useful as a backup drive to keep the important stuff in case the new one DIES?)

It's what I'd personally do, but bar that I can't be of much help.

Sorry 'bout that.

Solve : installing window xp?

Hi I am trying to get my computer to read my windows disk. I cant seem to get it to boot up and go into it. Have changed the SETTINGS to boot up with CD. What do i have to type in with dos to get it to go into it or does anyone have any other suggestions thanksHi,

what do i have to type in DOS - u can try c: to go to your c directory. Then u can type dir to list the files n folders in it.

any other suggestions - what is the problem u encounter? cannot boot is quite general, whats the error u see. The general solution to windows error is to press F8 during windows startup, choose Safe Mode and do some troubleshooting in Safe Mode.

Cheersthe hard drive dosnt have windows on it I am trying to instal Have it set up to go to cdrom on startup but goes into dos I would like to FORMAT it too what do you type in to format and what for getting it to load the windows cd It is an oem disk so should read it on start up but dont know why it isnted rissling.......does your pc have a floppy drive ....if so put a win 98 boot disk in the floppy and at the A: prompt type format C: and press enter you will see the message ......warning .......all data will be lost ( or something SIMILAR ) Do you wish to continue ....... Y or N answer Y it will wipe the hard drive and prepare it for the o/s install ...... reboot with the boot disk still in .......it will load the NECESSARY files and generic drivers .....when it finishes loading and displays the A: prompt ...... type D: and enter .........now put the cd in drive D ( assuming thats your cd drive ) and type setup and away it goes ........

dl65 When do you partition or is this it?

ed rissling.......does your pc have a floppy drive ....if so put a win 98 boot disk in the floppy and at the A: prompt type format C: and press enter you will see the message ......warning .......all data will be lost ( or something similar ) Do you wish to continue ....... dl65

don't format from the 98 disk. After you boot to your win98 disk, type fdisk then enter, choose delete primary partition, then when it has deleted your primary partition, tell it to create a primary partition, and when it asks if you want the entire drive, tell it an amount (like 50% or a set size) when it has finished creating that primary partition, you remove the 98 floppy & reboot to the cd and it will format the c drive and install xpHi, ed.

Your answer to two questions will help me know what to tell you:

* Is there any operating system already installed on the computer's hard drive? If so, what is it? DOS? Windows 98? A previous installation of XP?

* Have you checked your BIOS settings in the CMOS to see if you are able to change it to boot to the CD-ROM drive first?

I'll wait for your reply.

Solve : Windows Xp and a second 400 GB HD?

Answer»

I have a 40 GB drive which is where my system resides. I want to put a 400 GB HD in bay # 2 to use for RECORDING video only from my cameras. Will XP allow me to do this?

PLEASE advise.

ThanksIf you computer will accept it and your Bios will recognize it. Windows XP will be glad to have it.

What BIOS will work? Is there a paticular version I should be looking for?The BIOS is the (Basic Input Output System) on your computer's motherboard. When you start up your system you see a message for a short period of time something like "Press F2 for setup". This system recognizes things like cpu, memory, keyboards, HARD drives, CD ROMS, etc. and loads them before the Operating System even STARTS. So it has to know what to do with the hardware before the operating system does.

If your computer is not too old then this should not be a problem for you at all.

Put the drive in the computer properly, the BIOS should pick it up. Windows should then be aware of it but won't be able to do anything with it until you format it.

Solve : Random crashes bugcode-usb-driver?

Answer»

Hello everyone. I;ve always built my own systemsbut this is driving me mad-- I'm suffering from strange crashes-sometimes EVERYTHING is fine for hours-sometimes it crashes every 2 mins. A blue screen flashes up with something like -bugcode usb driver- on screen for a second then a complete "warm" reboot ( ie no memory check). Ive tried reinstalling the usb drivers that came with the card-no change. Cant find drivers for the card at drivers.com or anywhere else for that matter.
I've even tried cleaning the power supply & all the cooling fans/heatsinks just in case it was heat related, but it hasn;t helped.
Any suggsetions will be gratefully recieved.PLease help
NotlobUpdate!--not usb card -removed from system only got GFORCE fx5200 & sblive on system now. Still REBOOTS spontaniously- but no blue screen now.Totally at a loss so I'm going to check Mains connections for BROWN outs. Any suggestions still most gratefully recieved
Notlob sounds hardware related for sure.. would check memory chips

Solve : Win 2k sleep?

Answer»

Recently LOADED Win2k Professional.
Idled computer begins sleep process, and at some point can't awaken it. Need to kill POWER, and reboot.

Believe that the "standby" mode is the problem.
Would guess this is a registry problem, but would like some ideas.Do you want it to actually go into standby?

If not go to control panel, power OPTIONS and change the settings. What buttons are you pressing to wake it up? Have you tried the Esc key?

Solve : network passwords?

Answer»

I have a network between my house's two computers to share files and dsl. ONE computer (mattroom) is connected by a wire to the router. The other computer (lvngroom) is connected wirelessly to the router. They both run XP PRO SP2, and I have Trend Micro Internet Security 2005 on both. I can access the shared files on mattroom from lvngroom, but mattroom cannot access the files on lvngroom. When I click "view workgroup computers" on mattroom i can see lvngroom, but when i click on it i am prompted for a username/password. I have tried many username/pw combinations, and I am stumped. What username/pw do I PUT in this box?Where are thse files located? They SHOULD all be in your Shared folder...

[glb]Flame[/glb]mattroom cannot access any files, not even the ones in the shared folders. lvngroom can see mattroom's shared files, but lvngroom seems to lock me out. what do i do to set up a username/pw to access lvngroom?Try setting up a USER account, password optional, on the lvngroom machine that the mattroom computer can USE.

When the mattroom computer is prompted to logon, use the account username that you setup.

Hope this helps.

Solve : Anti-virus protection?

Answer»

My Norton anti-virus subscription is running out at the end of this MONTH( March). I found this FREE AVG PROGRAM on the net and I was wondering if anyone knows how efficient it is. http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/http://www.consumersearch.com/www/software/antivirus_software/SuperDave....If I am doing a format on friends pc , I always install "AVG" on them before going on line to install Service Packs or upgrades ....... Seems to do a good job ......
** The thing I like about Norton ( despite the fact that its a bit of a RESOURCE hog ) is the fact that it auto updates .

dl65 Thanks. Commando, It looks quite good. It even has automatic updates. I think I'll give it a try. What have I got to lose except my computer.
