Hello Vladimir, It is not too clear what you mean by "it only allows me to install updates or another OS".
Do you have a full version or an update version and is it XP Home or XP Professional?

In any/all case(s) does it have either the SP1 or SP2 service pack?

If it is an upgrade XP CD what is the previous Operating System you were using?

Solve : KeyPress macro in MS Word??

Answer»

Does anyone know how to write a macro for a Word template (a form) that would allow me to determine what happens when a particular key is pressed? I have checkboxes in the form but don't want the arrow keys or pageup/pagedown to SELECT the boxes. I can skip those form fields by using a tab order with macros but I cannot figure out how to give the pageup/pagedown and arrows keys a different function when pressed so they don't select the checkboxes in the form. I hope I made myself clear? thx!

code I'm using to determine tab order:

Sub ExitFieldName()
   ActiveDocument.Bookmarks("NextField").Range.Fields(1).Result.Select
End Sub
You can use the VB key constants to trigger a keypress event and then trap the keys.

vbKeyPageUp              PAGE UP key
vbKeyPageDown            PAGE DOWN key
vbKeyLeft                   LEFT ARROW key
vbKeyUp                  UP ARROW key
vbKeyRight                 RIGHT ARROW key
vbKeyDown               DOWN ARROW key

I hope this is what you wanted.  That sounds like it could be what I need...but how do I implement it? Is there a SPECIAL way to add it to the general declaration with my other macros? sorry, I am a VB newbie Thanks for your response! When a key in a form is pressed, VB runs a keypress event. You will need to setup the event for each control (ie: Checkbox) on your form.

Example

Sub CheckBox1_KeyPress (KeyAscii As Integer)
If KeyAscii = vbKeyPageUp Or _
            KeyAscii = vbKeyPageDown Or _
            KeyAscii = vbKeyLeft Or _
            KeyAscii = vbKeyRight Or _
            KeyAscii = vbKeyUp Or _
            KeyAscii = vbKeyDown Then
KeyAscii = 0                                           ' nullify the key action
       Beep
     End If
End Sub

The above code CANCELS the action of various keys. Just cut and paste into your own keypress EVENTS. Naturally you can replace the logic with your own.

Just an idea: You can also setup a key mask to disable keys.

Hope this helps.  Excellent, does it matter if the checkboxes are running an enter macro to make them exclusive, or if they are in a frame? My checkboxes are in a frame with an enter macro on each that will only allow you to select one (like a radio button). Unfortunately I'm not getting any reaction at all when I use this code in the document. :(

I tested the code against a regular text field in the form, and this doesn't seem to work either...no reaction at all when I press page up:

Sub TextField_KeyPress(KeyAscii As Integer)
If KeyAscii = vbKeyPageUp Then
MsgBox "hey"        ' test key action
  Beep
End If
End Sub

Any ideas?Confusion reigns . I was able to get your macro to work, but I'm not sure if we're talking about the same situation. I created a form with a text box using the Word VB editor. I then coded a keypress event attached to the textbox. I also coded a AutoOpen macro (tools-->macros) to show the form when the document was loaded. When the textbox got focus,  I pressed the pageup key and the message box appeared.

This is the technique I've always used in Excel. Apparently it works equally well in Word.

I also tried this with form fields, but couldn't figure out how to attach the macro to the control.

If you explain your design, I'll try to find a solution.

Bingo. That's exactly the problem I'm having. I am working with form fields in a Word doc ONLY...I have not created a User Form in VB. It's an employee review form, and each section has 5 checkboxes for ratings...if you tab through the document to fill in comments etc, PRESSING the up/down arrow keys or the pageup/pagedown keys will still move you through the checkboxes as well as the other form fields (regular text fields). This is a problem, as it selects each checkbox as you move through it. I can see someone mistakenly marking a checkbox this way, instead of specifically clicking on it with their mouse. What I'm trying to do is ignore the keypress event when on any of the checkbox form fields....but as you said, I can't figure out how to attach the code to them in the document. The code does not show up as an available enter/exit macro for the form field in the Word doc. If you find anything out on this please let me know, I really appreciate the help!I was unable to find out anything you don't already know. Unless you create a VB form, formfield macros can only be executed when the field gets or loses control; hardly what you need.

The link below may give you some ideas.

Sounds like the drive has gone. I had the same thing happen and had to fit a new drive. (The old one was a 7,200 rpm 60Gb Maxtor Quantum Fireballp with a 2 Mb drive-cache.).

I ended up fitting a 7,200 rpm 80Gb drive with an 8Mb drive-cache which allowed defrag to run four times faster when using Windows ME.)

You'll need a specialist to recover any data on the drive platters, I tried the freezer METHOD but had no luck there, although some have done so.

Apparently it is CAUSED by a microchip overheating. The use of the freezer is to drop the temperature sufficiently to give a longer time before the chip OVERHEATS again and, hopefully, to give just enough time to copy precious data.
dang that really sux...so do u guys recommend i take it to a computer store or what?Well, if you need a specialist, then yes... The computer store would be the place to go... Good luck!

Solve : Windows me symevnt.386 error?

Answer»

Hello,
I have a sunbook flat 800 computer under Windows me (millennium) and Norton Antivirus 2004 PROFESSIONAL antivirus.
After the computer started to display the messages a) Auto-Protect is unable to start, Symevnt.386 is not loaded. You may need to reinstall Norton AntiVirus to correct the problem." b) Windows protection error. You will have to start your computer. System stopped (under the electric blue screen) I decided to reinstall windows me using the reinstallation cd rom without success.
The installation process goes well (installation, files copying (25 min), boot) up to the peripherals configuration point. After that, the same message displays:  Auto-Protect is unable to start, Symevnt.386 is not loaded. You may need to reinstall Norton AntiVirus to correct the problem. I press a key, the installation proceeds only to display the same message some seconds after
I consulted the Symantec site and they say that I should have to uninstall Norton 2004 professional under Normal mode to solve the problem (while I have only access to safe mode!!!). I turn around without finding a solution.
Moreover, I do not know how to access the scanreg/restore command under MS DOS (option unavailable under windows me) in order to restore the register to a previus date

Does someone can help me?
Many thanks in advance
LoisLoida:

Try this:

Boot to Safe Mode and use the Add/Remove Programs applet in the Control Panel to remove Norton Antivirus and any other Symantec software (such as Live Update or Norton System Works).

Then, reboot your computer to normal mode.  It should then be able to boot normally.  Once back at your desktop in normal mode, you should be able to put in the Norton Antivirus installation CD and install it again.

Regards,
Doc
Hello and thanks for your reply.

I was unable to uninstall Norton Antivirus 2004 professional from the control panel. When I press the key add/suppress the the prompt is "the installation programme has detected that Windows was in safe mode. You should restard your computer in normal mode. The installation (while I want to uninstall it) will be stopped.

When I restart in normal mode the message is always the same : "Auto-Protect is unable to start, Symevnt.386 is not loaded. You may need to reinstall Norton AntiVirus to correct the problem." b) Windows protection error. You will have to restart your computer

Moreover, I have no access to internet.

Is there another possibility to fix this ?
THANK you very much in advance

LoisLets see there Loida. If you are wanting a fresh install of Windows ME the best way would be to boot from the CD (You shouldn't see windows booting up). You can do this by just inserting the CD into the CD-ROM drive and then restarting your computer. It should give you a message similiar to: "To boot from the CD press any key". Press any key and it should start windows setup.

From there, Norton should have no affect on reinstalling Windows ME as it doesn't even touch your present installation. Just follow the on screen instructions. I would also recommend switching to AVG Anti-Virus. Their website is located here (www.grisoft.com). Best of all, it's free.

Also, have you previously uninstalled an older version of NAV? Depending on your answer I may have other solutions. Thank you very much for your reply.

I started reinstallation of Windows Millennium (ME) from CD rom. Message under blue COLOR (…)  if you proceed with the installation your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT will be replaced by the basic version of those files, “leave the installation (recommended)” or  “continue and replace the present operating system”. Last week I tried the two options only to obtain the same message (…) Symevnt.386 (…)

Before the present Norton Antivirus 2004 Professional CD rom installation (on two computers, the one I am writing you to and the one with these problems) I had signed an annual Symantec subscription whereby the antivirus updates were automatically downloaded.

It is pleasant to feel that there is someone out there in the net to hear my computer ordeals ...

I look forward to your reassuring reply.

Lois
It's not a problem at all. I'm glad you find my replies helpful. You can also try (this is a reach in the dark) to go into your system.ini file (explained below) and just add a ";" to the beginning of symevnt.386 and it should stop the error so that you will be able to uninstall Norton Anti-Virus (assuming the file is actually there).

In order to do this, you need to head into safe mode (that's your only way of getting into the computer correct?) and click on Start>Run. Type in either "msconfig" or "sysedit" (not sure which command Windows ME uses). That should bring up a new window in which you will find a tab named "System.ini". Click on that. You should see the Symevnt.386 file sitting all comfortable in there. Just simply add a ";" to the front of the file name. That should rid you of the error.

Like I said, I'm not sure if this will work but it's definitly worth a shot. If it does work, you should be able to uninstall Norton and switch to a more user friendly if you feel as you need to. Again the link to AVG Free Edition is here (http://free.grisoft.com). Also, a good Anti-Spyware program can be found here (http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx) It is free as well (Yes, I know, Microsoft offering free software, it's wierd yes?).
And last but not least, a nice free firewall, which can be found here (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp?lid=staticcomp_za).

Hope this helps.I dumped nav ages ago........is causes more problems than what it is worth.. the personal addition anvir from majorgeeks.com found more than nav and does not nick drive space and slow down the pc..imhao add ends........where are you now.....in windows....or in msdos.....if you are in windows go to the c:\windows\options\cabs folder.........scroll down the list till you come across an icon called setup......next to scanreg......if you clicked this icon......it will re-install winme...where are you??Hello,
And thanks again for your reply.

In safe mode I clicked start, run, msconfig, system.ini and I did not find any  Symevnt.386 (there was a file called 386Enh which I LEFT as it  stood).

I clicked start, research and looked for the word symevnt and suppressed the following instances prompted by the search:
System (windows)
User (windows)
Read e, navap.VXD, sevinst, setup, navins95.dll,.dll (c windows temp Norton antivirus nav 9XME
symkrnll.dll (x windows temp Norton antivirus nav9XME rescue

symevnt.386 c: program files Norton antivirus c program files Symantec
s32EVNT1.dll (c: program files/symajntec
symkrnll.dll (c program files Symantec rescue

Then I start in normal mode, prompt asking to insert the drivers cd rom, message : “windows cannot find the drivers software”, A:\ lights up while D:\ hold the cd rom !!!

Then I try to install windows millennium with the cd rom, all goes well up to 70 % of the installation, the following message is prompted “SUWIN caused a general protection fault in module verx.dll CLOSE"    or    "IGNORE or SUWIN : an error has occurred in your application. If you choose ignore, you should save your work in a new file. If you choose close, your application will terminate
Application error, suwin caused a general protection fault in module verx.dll at 0002:24AE

Then I tried to start in safe mode and the following message appears: Explorer has caused an error in kernel32.dll, the explorer programme will be closed.

To sum up, the Symevnt.386 message went off to be replaced by another one. The safe mode is no longer available (I have a grey screen cornered by the words “safe mode” with no icons at all, I cannot access the computer).

Kindly help me with this matter.
Best regards
Lois
Are you sure you booted to the CD-ROM setup and never touched Windows ME? If so, I've never seen this happen. I'll will do some research on this and see what I can't find for you. I've never really liked norton but it seems it goes beyond that. Let me see what I can find. In the mean time, please list your system configuration if you can. It may come in handy. Hopefully it won't take too long to figure this out. Here ya go, this should do it. It looks exactly like what you need. (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;888555) Looks like we both learned something new today. Just follow the instructions on Microsoft's webpage. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. You can also reach me on AIM if you have access to that.Loida,I fixed the same problem by going to Safe Mode, opening Norton A.V. via keyboard. You should see 3 boxes.Using the spacebar uncheck the auto start and auto run boxes and reboot. If you don't see boxes right away click options on top of Norton program.Hope this helps.
teco2Hello and thank you very much UsseryT for your always efficient and quick help,

I have just tried to follow the Microsoft instructions with the installation CD rom I have without success, I suppose it is not the MS dos floppy disc they require.

Where can I get an MS Dos floppy disc?

Thank you Teco 2 but my safe mode is now a grey screen without any "start" option.

I look forward to your kind reply.

Solve : XP Continuously Shuts Down?

Answer»

Hey
I'm going to try to describe my problem as in-depth as possible, because I can't seem to find anything similar anywhere around the internet.

I have Windows XP on my laptop.  I keep it up-to-date with ANTI-viruses and the new spy-ware program released by Microsoft.  Just about two weeks ago, Windows Update installed an update that required me to shut down (not restart) my computer to install it.  This is the last time my computer worked properly all the way through.  Once I started my laptop back up, it went to the login screen and I clicked my Administrator account, but as soon as the music began to play the laptop shut down abruptly as if I had pulled the plug on a desktop.  I tried again, with the same results.  So, I use Safe Mode to try to find out the problem, because that runs just fine.  Anti Spyware tells me that MSConfig.exe has a new entry in my registry or something like that, so I tell it to block it.  Ad Aware notices the same thing and I tell it to block that too.

If you can help with what I've said, please let me know.

ThanksDid you notice if the Windows Update was a Critical Update or a Driver Update?  Anyway, have you tried System Restore?  WinXP automatically creates a Restore Point prior to installing updates.Muten......On  April 13th .....M/S released 5 or 6 updates through ......auto updates...... ( THATS the date I received them)  this may help you establishing a restore date as suggested by Computer_Commando

dl65  I've tried Sys Restore too, but those didn't help the problem.  It would tell me that it was successful and that'd be about it.  I'd still have to use Safe Mode to get my computer to fully START up.How made the laptop?  And like Computer_Commando have ask, did you download a driver update, or a Critical Update? It's a Compaq Presario, one of the newer models I bought it at the beginning of the school year.
I'm not sure if it was a driver update or critical, but what kind of update would require you to shut the computer entirely down to install it?Muten:

Try booting to Safe Mode and uninstalling the Windows update(s)--that is, if you know which one(s) to uninstall.  DL may be able to tell you which ones to remove, as i have not added the latest updates.

To remove the updates, click Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs.  Then click Change or Remove Programs, select the first update to remove and click Remove.  Do *not* try to remove any Service Packs.

What if SP2 is the only thing related that is available to uninstall?I would not say that doing that would be safe...

[glb]Flame[/glb]boot laptop and HOLD down the f8 key.......chose last good config......what are your power settings....??did this happen while on battery power?/Muten:

I agree with Flame that it would be safe.  My SUGGESTION not to remove the service pack(s) was due to the fact that they usually are thoroughly tested by Microsoft and rarely contain bugs that would cause the problems you are having.

Solve : Windows Explorer Toolbar freeze-up?

Answer»

G'day.

I can't work this one out, or find any info by search or elsewhere.

OS=XP Prof +SP2.

Problem = Often, but not always, when I'm on-line with my dial-up connection, the Windows Explorer toolbar will freeze up.  The application - either Firefox or Pegasus email - still works and I start applications via the desktop icons but the Quickstart toolbar and the tray don't respond to mouseclicks and icons with graphics like the networking icon and Zone Alarm's traffic register freeze.

So I can't disconnect via the networking icon but have to do it through by calling up  networking properties via the dresktop "ISP connection" icon.  The  connection disconnects OK (I can tell from the leds on my external modem)  but the networking icon in the tray stays up for several minutes.  Then I'll get a chain of responses to any toolbar clicks I've done as though a buffer is clearing and everything is OK.

I can trigger the 'buffer clearing' - if that is what it is - by using task manager to kill a 'svchost.exe' process being run by System, but if I kill the wrong one Windows takes offence and closes down!

I've both Pest Patrol and Spybot up to date but they report no adware or trojans aboard, and an anti-virus scan produces nothing.

My dial-up connection, though, is sometimes 'hi-jacked' by something.  I'd guess it is an application with an auto-update facility taking over the connection although I've turned off all the auto-updates I can find.  When it's happening Zone Alarm doesn't report any unusual programs on line and I can't see any 'strange' processes running in task manager.

I"ve reached the point where a re- or repair install of XP seems the only solution (see my post 'dynamic disks' in the 'computer hardware' forum, but that's a last RESORT.

Any ideas?  And in particular is there any way of tracking down the application I think is interfering with the connection when it's up, and which I think might by causing the freeze-up if something in the system is awaiting a response that doesn't come?

Desperately yours,

FalstaffHave a look with http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/procexp.shtml
You will need to scroll down to the bottom of the page to get it.G'day.

Thanks for that Fed.  I tried Process Explorer, but the only thing that struck me as odd when the problem occured was that  I was running 5 copies of svchost.exe  -  one of which was linked to the Windows Update .exe app.

Now as I have a slow dial-up connection I don't want any auto-updates taking it overand so have all I can find, including Windows Update, turned off, which makes it odd that  its app should appear to be running.

Today I had a problem in that although I could right -click the networking icon in the tray and get the menu, clicking 'disconnect' didn't work - the connection stayed stubbornly up although no data was passing.  If I tried clicking the IPS connect icon on disktop I couldn't get that up either, so had no way of  disconnecting.  Had to turn the modem off physically.

Odder and odder.Just to convince me you don't have any bugs, download, install, update & run 'ewido' & 'windows anti-spyware beta' programs. Both are easily searched & obtained.
In addition, do an online scan here http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/ and we'll see where that lands us.
G'day Fed.

I'm confident I'm clean.  AV is up-to-date, I downloaded and ran the Windows Antispy (thanks for that) which came up with nothing, as does eTrust's Pest Patrol and Spybot.

I tried the Panda Software thing but it wouldn't work for me.  I think it needs IE and I used Firefox.

But here's another oddity in my system - when I dug IE out of the basement to give Panda a try IE wouldn't connect at all, and when I tried to check out Internet Options under Tools  it told me - "this operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer.  Please contact your system administrator" - which is odd as my working account is an administrator account.

So I logged on to my pure admininstrator account and I could access IE's internet options perfectly well, although it still would not connect.

It might be that I have two ISP accounts - one dial-up and one satellite -  only one of which can be set as default, so if IE always looks for the default connection and I'm on the other one perhaps it doesn't see it.  Dashed if I know.

Have a look at this
http://www.wilderssecurity.com/archive/index.php/t-29250.html
It's not very heavy or long.
Then try procexp again and right click on each 'svchost' in the TOP screen, choose properties then services.
See if that will tell you what's running.
BTW, when I'm connected (dialup) with IE open (like now), I have only 2 instances of svchost running.Let's leave your other oddity out of this equation for now.  G'day Fed.

Thanks for that.

Can't say I fully understood it, but interestingly the IPv6 helper service was running on my machine too, although it wasn't switched on in any network connection.  I've turning it off and will see what happens.

I have 5 svchost processes running on my machine even before establishing a connection,  but they all seem linked to  bona fide applications.  Of course whether or not I actually need them is another matter, and beyond me.

I have a suspicion now that the culprit might be my email app.  I use Pegasus, and the problem seems to occure when it's running - tho' not every TIME.  According to Process Explorer it is the only app. that runs, but sometimes there is data passing over the connection, but Pegasus' own mail downloads seem to have hung, and it is using 100% processor time, which seems a lot for a mail app.

I'll try using anothe mail app for a time and see if that helps.

Ta.I'm still not fully convinced you don't have a virus.
I'm on W2k but I'm sure it's the same for xp.
Connect to your server & open IE at say, google and wait until it fully loads the page.
If you have a small pair of monitors in the bottom right hand side of your taskbar, right click on them and select 'status'.
You should then be able to see the 'sent' and 'received' bytes.
Watch them for a short while and see you are sending or receiving any traffic while your traffic should be idle.
Another little trick is to create in your email contact list a fictitious email address in your contact list like
[email protected] causing any nasty programs that are using your email list to try & send to that address.
This in turn will trigger a 'mail undeliverable' response from your ISP and alert you to a problem.G'day Fed.

Thanks for that.

I don't use IE or Outlook.  My browser is Firefox and my email Pegasus which doesn't use the Microsoft contacts file so even if viruses get into my machine hopefully they starve to death.

I had the following reply from Tech Support at Pegasus:

"...the SP2 package does a lot of strange thing to
winsock applications.  I would really look around and see it if you can turn off
some of the more redundent checks.

This almost sounds like a packet size problem.  The packets are getting fragmented
and lost so there are a lot of RETRIES and hangs.  This can increase the data flow
significantly.

I would also try using the -z 1024 commandline option to shift to blocking sockets
to see if this helps.

1024      Use blocking sockets; may be needed for some
defective WINSOCK implementations."

I don't want to start turning services off unless I'm really sure what I'm doing, which I don't.    I don't understand the 'blocking sockets' bit either.   I guess I  could try to search MS support  for it, but if you can explain in simple terms I'd be obliged.

Thanks

Then if you have a small pair of monitors in the bottom right hand side of your taskbar, right click on them and select 'status'.

Solve : cannnot access files through their icon?

Answer»

Hello All,

I am currently ahving a problem with my file access.  I click on  my desktop icons for a specific file and my computer locks up.  When I click on the icons for my programs it's fine.  the only way to acess the files is by opening it up with the specific program used to writ it.
Also the only way to unlock teh computer without turning it off is to go into task manager and ending aprocess called drwtsn32.exe.
Does anyone know what MIGHT be causing this and how I can remedy it?

Thanks for time and consideration.    dragon:

The drwtsn32 executable is the Dr. Watson UTILITY, which Microsoft describes thusly:

"Dr. Watson detects information about system and program failures and records the information in a log file. In the event of a program error, Dr. Watson starts automatically. ...To open Dr. Watson, click Start, and then click RUN. In the Open box, type drwtsn32. Dr. Watson cannot prevent errors from occurring, but the information recorded in the log file can be used by technical SUPPORT personnel to diagnose the problem. For information about using Dr. Watson, click Help in Dr. Watson."

Once you enable it, the only way to DISABLE it is to edit the registry:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;188296

CAUTION: If you edit the registry incorrectly, you may be unable to start Windows until you reinstall the operating system.

Solve : Boot worries?

Answer»

Hi everyone,

My computer usually BOOTS ok, but sometimes (and it seems to be getting more frequent lately) it will not boot properly.

For example on the first black screen on boot up, when it check memory and stuff, it sometimes gets stuck at the point where it says "checking IDE drives" and sometimes I have to leave it for a couple of hours then it will book ok. I am just worried that one day it is going to get totally stuck unless I take some action now.

Can anyone think what is wrong, and how I can combat it?

Many thanks for any replies posted.
Kop442000The first thing you may want to try is to make sure the cables connecting your hard drives to the controller card or motherboard are properly seated.  Also check the power cables to the drives.

While you are INSIDE the computer just check that all the cables are securely attached to their respective devices.
Cables can become loosened over time, believe it or not, just because of turning the computer on and off.  REMEMBER Physical Science from school, heat expands cold contracts?  It can actually loosen parts of your system over time.

You might also have a hard drive or drive controller going bad, but I would work with the simple stuff first.  BTW, a poorly seated cable can make a drive go bad.

Thank you.

Will give that a shot!

Solve : Probelm after problem?

Hello,

I recently installed a fresh windows XP after formating my hard drive. Now every program seems to freeze all the time and stop responding. Also theres this little search BAR in the bottom right hand cornor of my screen that pops up and theres a crazy number of pop ups all the time. i went to add remove programs but theres nothing there that shouldnt be. Any help WOULD be much appreciated.

EdenSounds like you have been infected with spyware.

You may want to install, update and run.  MICROSOFT Anti-Spyware
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=321cd7a2-6a57-4c57-a8bd-dbf62eda9671&displaylang=en
or some other anti-spyware program.
Also make sure your anti-virus software is up to date and functioning.  A good deep SCAN would be advised.

[pay me] A good antivirus is Panda 2005 which now comes with spyware scanner, a firewall AND some fancy coding that detects threats before they are known as virus'... its fancy. and cheaper than Norton [/pay me]

Solve : computer won't boot-up?

Answer»

I hit the power button, computer goes on like usual, then in a few seconds I hear a series of 3 or 4 beeps, then an error sound.  That's it.  The computer doesn't even get to the point of the boot process where it turns the monitor on.  Then it just sits there, still on, but not doing anything.  So I have to hit the power button to turn it off, and turn it back on, etc.  At first, I would only have to do that a few times before it would boot up.  Now, it doesn't want to boot up at all.  Once it does boot up, the computer works great, no problems.  Its only on restarts and when I turn it on.  Any HELP would be greatly appreciated.Often a series of 3 or 4 beeps is indicative of a video problem, check the cable connections to your monitor 1st.I disconnected the monitor from the computer and tried booting up, but it didn't make a difference.  If I have a video problem, should just disconnecting the monitor have a difference when booting up? or do I have to do something else.  Thanks for the help.Video problems indicated by BIOS beeps are not due to the monitor, they are due to the video CARD (inside the computer)How do I figure it out for sure?  Is there a cheap video card I can buy that will allow me to see if that's the problem?  Thanks for the help. How about some information on your computer?
Brand?  Model? Motherboard? Video Card? (on board video or via video card).

Open the computer and reseat the video card to start.  Might even want to blow some of the dust out of the slot too.You are right Gussery, because I'm sure I've had the beeps from an ill fitted video cable before I disconnected my cable and tried it... no extra beeps.
Maybe it varies with whatever MB is being USED, this was quite a few years ago.
Anyway, I guess we wait for a more detailed response.
BTW, I managed to loose all my drivers by booting up without a monitor connected.   All is right now.It may very well be different with different motherboards Fed.  Now that you mention it I seem to vaguely remember an old Packard Bell 386 or 486 that did that.  (Of course it could just be the voices in my head playing tricks on me.)

Schizophrenia MEANS never having to eat alone......   Sorry its taking me a long time to post replies, the nearest computer now is at the library, so I'm having to go back and forth from my house to the library.  Anyway, the computer is about 4.5 years old, its an HP 800mhz model 8360(?? not sure on this, I will double check)....I want to say the video card is an   nvidia(??)....once again tho, I'll have to double-check on that.  What does the video card look like inside so I can try and pull it, get rid of the dust and try again?  Thanks the help and I'll try to post replies a little sooner.....unfortunately this has been finals week for me in school, just about the worst time for my computer to take a crap.  Well, I have finally given up and scheduled an appt. to get it fixed by a professional.  I just don't have the time to attempt to fix it myself.  Thanks for all of your input though, I really appreciate it.  I'll post what the problem was after I get it fixed (hopefully) tomorrow.  Thanks again.

Solve : Windows 3.1 Printer problem?

Answer»

I'm having trouble installing a new printer in Windows 3.1.  I have VERY little experience with 3.1...  The old printer just got old and died, so I installed an HPDeskjet 895Cxi, but it keeps printing random characters and won't print charts and graphs from the only program on the computer.  I installed the 895 driver, but it doesn't seem to be recognizing the install.  It doesn't have the 895 listed in the available printers, nor will it let me add it as a new printer.  (The driver is installed, but it doesn't seem to recognize that it is a driver.  It can't seem to find it on the disk, although I know it is there and the drive is working fine).  Can I remove the old printer's driver and replace it with this (or rename this and overwrite the other one?)  If so, where is the driver located?  Thanks for your help!Did you install the proper drivers?  Drivers for Win3.11 are the ones you want.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?product=59306&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&submit.y=7&submit.x=9&lang=en&cc=usI'm having trouble remembering c. 1993, but Commando may know better than i if it is true that every program you install in DOS with Windows 3.x has its own INI files that point to the printer's drivers.  That is, the applications do not access the printer through Windows 3.x.  Hence, installing a new printer with Windows 3.x may be a daunting task as the INI files for *every* program MUST be edited to use new drivers.  Some programs may even require their own drivers (i think).

A pure Windows program would use the printer as it was installed in Windows without any additional effort, a Windows front on a DOS program might or a pure DOS program will require printer drivers installed into the program itself (program specific printer drivers) or printing generic directly to the lpt port.

Hopefully I am not giving away my age (maybe that should be experience) here. My first computer was a Vic 20.  It had 20 kb of memory.  Most calculators have more than that today!

Still, i'm sure some of these young whiper snappers might learn something from a couple of old geezers like us!

=======================================

[size=10]"The glory of young men is their strength, but gray hair is the splendor of the old." (Proverbs 20:29)[/size]I know I have the right driver, I got it from the same link as provided above.
When I click to add new printer in the Control Panel, mine is not listed, so I go to"Unlisted printers" (first on the list), and it asks for the disk.  the driver is on cd, so I browse the cd and find the directory, but it pops up saying "the file oemsetup.inf COULD not be found".  I did some searching on the 'net, but I'm unable to find any info.  Also, I when I choose a different directory on the cd (not the correct one), it goes through, but then restarts and asks for the location of the driver (back to square 1!!!).  I appreciate all your help with this.

Just to note, the generic print driver WORKS fine for plain text, but I can't print the chart I need.  It's always worked on the older printer, so I know it can happen.  Jimbo:

This might be what you need:

... It's always worked on the older printer, so I know it can happen...

I'm sorry, but your ASSUMPTION is incorrect.  It's a different printer with different drivers.  You can also try one of the included Win3.1 HP DeskJet drivers:
I see 4:
HP DeskJet
HP DeskJet Plus
HP DeskJet 500
HP DeskJet 500C

I still have an old 80486SLC-50 notebook computer that runs Win3.1.  It has no floppy disk drive and no CD, but does have Windows for Pen Computing and a touch screen.  No color, 9" grayscale.  Ruggedized ALLOY case, impossible to damage.  Still very cool.

Can anyone help me with my computer. I have been having problems because when i play a action game my computer just refresh and i didn't pushed nothing on my computer box or i haven't "click yes" on the turn off computer.  I want this reboot stop. Can anyone help me.Wow.  So many words used but no info given.  Read the sticky called Read This First then repost.Well, you have to enter in Safe Mode, read what events (error events or other) you have in EVENT Viewer.
Your restart is caused by a setting in Windows XP (I SUPPOSE): when your computer crashes (BSOD -- fatal error it means) it will restart automatically; if it doesn't restart by itself, you can't do MUCH, but to read and note (and post here) the error code.
So... Try to enter safe mode, check there the Event Viewer, change video SETTINGS and so on... And "LET us know"

thanks for the help Since you provided zero information in your first post it's difficult to know exactly what the problem is. The more detail you provide, the better we can assist.

1) Is this an attempt to do a brand new, clean install (are you booting to the XP CD and trying to format first)?

2) At EXACTLY what point do you get the error?

3) WHY are you doing a new install?

4) Are you using an original, retail XP cd?

If you think it's ram, here's how to check:
download memtest (http://memtest.org/). Burn it to a cd using a dedicated .ISO burning utility (http://www.petri.co.il/how_to_write_iso_files_to_cd.htm), make sure the cd drive is at the top of the boot order in bios, then boot to the newly created cd and run the utility.hey here is the  info..sorry  had a bad day with it.....it happens on install.  when *installing devices * i get that  BSOD

I use photo bucket all the time.  You should be able to just copy and paste the picture  like so.    Copy the image code and just paste to your post don't use the"insert image"

If it is generating the same BSOD during installation as it was before you formatted, it's a hardware problem. Could be ram, hd, mobo, cpu, or anything at this point.thanks guys..it was ram(got new ram) ..but now after i did a fresh install i now get it  restarting  on its own ...with a BSOD  this was in the last line    ndis.sys  ....i cant even download updates on it(note i am on a different pc) i did use a flash drive to up  the chip set and some other DRIVERS  off the hp site

pc with the problem is

hp pavilion a1630n
windows media center  sp2

ndis.sys BSODs are usually related to a bad NIC. Try DISABLING your network interface. If it boots in safemode with no problems then it is likely that this is the problem.ok so  i got a on bored nic card and one i am about to  put in ..how do i disable the on bored one

hp pavilion a1630n  ok so  now i updated the nic card disable the on bored one  and still have the restart prob but runs good in safe mode with networking  ugh i don't get it
Good evening krytos2004

With all the helpful you have received so far this may help you as well.

If you have not done so yet I would uninstall the NIC driver for the on-board NIC and I would also disable the on-board nic in the BIOS not just in windows. To navigate thru the BIOS this is from HP for your PC http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=bph07110&tmp_track_link=ot_recdoc/c00007682/en_us/bph07110/loc:1&cc=us&dlc=zh-hans&lang=zh-hans&lc=en&product=3245027#N1033
If the old / bad driver is there it still can cause you an issue.

Now for the atapi.sys error you very well may have 1 of 2 things that may be the issue.
#1... The CD may have scratches or imperfections on the windows disc. You can have a bad windows disc even if it is retailed.
#2... The CD drive may be bad also. If the CD drive is bad it will not cashe all the files correctly during the windows set up so you can and will get odd messages / errors or increased installation time etc.

Please let us know how you make out, Mike

ok so  now i updated the nic card disable the on bored one  and still have the restart prob but runs good in safe mode with networking  ugh i don't get it

Does the BSOD always say ndis.sys or is it sometimes different? I know you mentioned atapi earlier, but that was resolved, correct?well now no  BSOD show up .just a restart  .. You would generate the specific or other error codes the next time it restarts by disabling auto restart -> http://pcsupport.about.com/od/tipstricks/ht/disautorestart.htm copy-paste the caused driver and error codes on your next reply.

Solve : CD rom wont read CDs!?

i recently began having problems.  my CD-rom wont read cds.  device manager says cd rom is working PROPERLY.  my external cd burner works, but not my internal cd rom.  any suggestions??  thank youCan you see the drive in My Computer? Have you tried cleaning the drive and making sure it is connected correctly? As NEIL suggested try cleaning it.

My method is to open up the CD-ROM drive case and blow gently to get rid of any dust.

Also when the case is fully secured try shaking it just a little if you hear something loose then you might want to buy another CD-ROM drive, possible a DVD-ROM drive.

(WARNING: DO NOT OPEN CASE UNLESS YOU ARE WILLING TO LOSE WARRANTY AND USE PROPER SAFETY RULES)Reinstall any drivers for that drive from the manufacturer of your drive..... Try their website...

[glb]Flame[/glb]when you load the cdrom disk?? click the left side of your MOUSE??now does windows see it!! some cdrom drives are not that >>instant yet? Also look at your CD-ROM drive and check and see if a light is blinking. Another indicator is if you hear your CD-ROM drive spinning a CD-ROM. These things MEAN it is reading the CD. Which i'm sure you probably already know.

Solve : Sound chipset disappears on laptop?

So this is my sad story.

I have a laptop with windows XP home, i tried to run featherlinux off a CD to TRY and get a feelfor the linux GUI and such. I played around, enjoied it. WENT back to XP to finish my work and now i have no sound. no sound at all. The device manager says everything's ok, the chipset is WORKING properly. If i run winamp, it just hangs. anything just doesnt play the sounds.

I've tried:
-Uninstalling and REINSTALLING hardware.
-Reinstalling drivers.
-simple volume issues.
-reformatting the entire drive.

Nothing works.

The only suggestion ive gotten that i havent tried was change the bios to allow sound but theres no option in my bios for that.

Please, i'm at wits END here, ive lost all my programs from formatting and im spending all day re-installing them all again.

Solve : Keyboard Dramas?

Answer»

Can anyone help me out with a problem Im having when I boot my computer up. I am running Win XP and have broadband ADSL internet running via ethernet and sometimes when I start up and get to the log on screen asking for password, the keyboard doesn't work and I have to reboot. The only way I have been able to get on is by using the F5 key on boot up and requesting to use the last known good configuration as a start up.
Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Soemtimes when I start up the keyboard works fine. Is this a configuration problem or a hardware issue???Is this a woreless keyboard? Also, do you have an antivirus program installed?

[GLB]Flame[/glb]First always check (even if you think it's okay) the keyboard input into the back of the computer (assuming it's not wireless) and if it's wireless, make sure that the receiver is properly plugged in in back.  90% of these types of problems are wire issues.

Otherwise, simply try another keybaord (you should try the most basic keyboard you can get -- perhaps only $9.00 for a basic, simple keyboard).

DOUBTFULLY is it, but possibly it is, the PS2 connector on your motherboard if at some point the keyboard was plugged in or taken out in a forced manner.  But that's something you'll find out if other keyboards don't work.  Also, there is an "on-screen"keyboard.  See if that works.  All these things should narrow down the problem.do you have any problems with your mouse..and does the num lock light on the keyboard stay on??have you changed your  graphics card?It is a packard bell SK-2315 keyboard and connects via USB

I have changed graphics card but some TIME ago and things have worked ok.

I have recently installed XP from MEhttp://support.packardbell.com/uk/mypc/?acquire=search&keyword=SK-2315%20keyboard%20%20winxp%20driverTry using a USB to PS2 converter and going into your PS2 port on your computer.  See what that does.  Packard Bell?  I thought they went out of business...but apparently they operate in other countries but no longer in US.  Hmmm.  Interesting.

Solve : Re: erase hard drive?

Answer»

You might want to boot up off a Win 98 disk, after that when the computer is done booting, type format c:/s this should format the drive.  HOpe this helps. If the ME system is still operating go into the Control Panel, Add-Remove components, START-Disk and, using ONE formatted floppy, make an ME bootdisk.

Leaving the bootdisk in the A: drive re-boot the computer and allow the bootdisk to load. At the choice page choose "Minimal boot" and press Enter.

At the prompt type: A:\>fdisk and press Enter. Answer Yes to "Do you want to enable Large Drive Support?" and see what drives are there. DELETE all the drives you see, following the on-screen instructions, in this order.

Delete any logical drives in reverse alphabetical order.

Delete any EXTENDED DOS partition.

Delete the Primary DOS partition.

Decide on how you WOULD like to partition your drive.

Make a Primary DOS partition.
Set the Primary DOS partition Active.

Make an Extended DOS partition.
Make Logical drives in the Extended DOS partition. (Maximum of three.)

When all is done press Esc to exit fdisk until you see the message asking you to re-boot and format.

When you  see the choice screen choose "With CD-ROM support" and press Enter.

At the prompt type: A:\>format c: and press Enter. Then format any Logical drives one at a time.

At the prompt type: A:\>scandisk /all /surface , and scan all drives to ensure there are no drive faults.

(This will take approximately 1 hour per 10Gb of drive-space.)

When the scan is finished put in your ME CD and start the installation.

I use a C: drive partition size of 4096Mb (4·0Gb) to install ME to as it makes the drive easy to maintain and to image.

(Has MS produced a service pack for ME yet do you know?)

Solve : delete an emule temp file?

Answer»

i removed emule from my computer using the uninstall option.
but there is still a file in the emule\temp directory that is about 700 MB when i try to remove it manually i get a message that the file is USED by another aplication.
how can i safely remove that file? You can safely remove the temp files by booting into safe mode, this make sure that no other programs are using it causing the lock.

Since you have uninstalled emule and you no LONGER plan to re-install therefore there is no reason to keep it.  You are giving that option if you later re-install emule, the temp files contains all the parts completed or not completed down loads from the net. if you did re-install, emule resummes with the temp files so you don't have to start from scratch again.

If you still have PROBLEMS in deleting the temp files, re-install emule and select Tools-Open incoming folder and delete all the files.  Now in the main interface select "shared files" and click on reload, this clears any memories of the files marked as shared, by default emule automatically SHARE all files from the incoming folder.

Solve : USB recognition?

Answer»

Hi all,
"USB device not RECOGNIZED". I have been trying to solve this problem for a week now. I have an XP system less than 8 months old which has been working really well up till now. Have TRIED uninstalling root hub drivers etc to no avail. Have checked al my devices and all ok. On plugging them in, the new device message appears followed by new hardware installed and ready to use message, then followed by USB device not recognized. Could it possibly be CAUSED by a recent windows update? Any help greatly appreciated.Have you tried on the manufacturere website for a uptodate driver?  This sounds like a driver issue.Yes, all hardware drivers are current. I GET the feeling that it is maybe windows drivers, but i'm not certain. I would really like to avoid a re-install of windows, particularly as i'm not sure it would fix the problem.

Solve : Set resolution too high?

Answer»

I set my resolution to high for my video card to handle and now every time i turn the computer on the monitor just displays a black screen. how can i fix this problem?Which operating system are you using? Have you tried "Last known good CONFIGURATION" if using XP?Yes i have tried last known good configuration, safe mode and all those other options and nothing seems to turn the screen back from black.A shot in the dark. If you turn your computer off and then disconnect the monitor. Start the computer with the monitor disconnected and stop it again. (PRESS the shutdown button on the keyboard if you have one.)

Re-connect the monitor and see if it will re-install on the next re-start.I tried that but it didnt work.. thanks for the idea though.Tyler:

When you start your computer, do you see any white letters and numbers displayed on the black background?

If so, does the display GO COMPLETELY blank after, or before, the white rectangles appear near the bottom of the screen?

Do you hear any BIOS beep codes? (Usually one beep means everything is OK but more than one beep means there is a hardware problem.  If you do hear more than one beep, how many do you hear?)

Do you see the Starting Windows XP color display at all?

Also, Safe Mode uses GENERIC VGA drivers (not your video card's drivers) to render a display.  Please describe what steps you took to enter Safe Mode.

What version of Windows are you using?  Can you get into Safe Mode?  If so, you can access your Display settings from the Control Panel and change them to a lower setting.  Then Reboot the computer.

Solve : System Restore Error Messages?

Answer»

Running XP SP-2.  I recently installed a new hard drive and made the old hard drive a slave.  I tuned up the new drive with Norton System Works.  Cleaned out the spyware and trojans. All seems to be operating well except When I attempt to use System Restore I recieve the following message:  "System Restore  Application has encountered a problem and needs to close."  When I attempt to check out  the application I recieve the following:

An exception occured while trying to run
"C:\WINDOWS\system32\shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL
"C:\WINDOWS\system32\sysdm.cpl",System"

Would appreciate any help or advice.fredg:

Please check the Application and System nodes in the Event Viewer for any error events.  Write down any error event ID numbers and desctiptions and POST them here.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&sd=tech

Regards,
DocThanks Doc.  For applications and system there are many many errors.  I assume you want me to post all of them, which will take quite a while.  I am putting all in a notepad  doc to post. Many errors is *not* a good thing.    But it may not be an extremely bad thing, either.  So, don't worry too much, yet.

LET us try narrowing it down.  Just post any that mention System Restore.

Once we take care of that problem, you may want to start a different discussion thread concerning one of the other errors (especially one for any of the other programs or Windows components that is giving you trouble).

Regards,
DocDoc, thanks for your interest.  I must be having a senior moment as I am not sure where you want me to post the informatioin.  The link you provided has no provisions that I can find for POSTING errors.  Do you mean to post them here in the Forum.  I won't post all, just as you said pertaining to System Restore.fredg:

Sorry, what i meant was to write the error numbers and descriptions down, then leave a post *here* at this Web site.

However, if you want to simply check out the knowledge base articles yourself, you may click on the link that appears when you scroll down to the bottom of the error description.  It's the link following the words: "For more information, see Help and Support Center at ..."

In fact, if you want to save yourself some typing, you may highlight just the links (the blue, underlined text) then press the CTRL and C keys on your keyboard at the same time to copy them to the Windows clip board.  Then, when you reply to this post of mine, just right-click in the Message text box and select Paste.

Then we will be able to click on the link and view the knowledge base article REGARDING your error ourselves.

Regards,
DocDoc:

I think we are on the same page now.  Following are the two error messages that I found about System Restore in the Event Viewer:

Event ID: 104
The System Restore initialization process failed.
Event ID:  7023
The System Restore Service service terminated with the following error: The system cannot find the path specified.

Each of them gave  http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

I've clicked on that and it doesn't help much.

The "many errors" I mentioned before don't appear to have anything to do with System Restore.  I now believe most of them have to do with my BIOS not being up to handling Windows XP SP-2 and  SP3 files that were downloaded  and installed automatically, and the new Maxtor HD.  I have ordered a Flash BIOS upgrade and am going to wait until that is installed to see what problems I have then.

I thank you for all your advice and trouble, and will post back here when I have some more information or can solve the problem.

Fredg

Fredg:

It looks like you installed Service Pack 1 (SP1) and then tried to restore your computer to a restore point prior to the installation of the SP1:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;329441

Is this correct?
[size=48]?[/size]

If so, then what you are trying to do is kind of like having your dog fixed and then putting him out to stud. It won't work!

Regards,
DocHello Doc,

No, I didn't try to restsore to a point prior to SP-2.  Sp-2 was installed last year, and I had no apparent problems after installing it.  I don't think I did a system restore after it was installed.  In March, due to my hard drive getting the death rattles, I installed the new Maxtor, and there were some anamolies after that, such as lost shortcuts, and some of the applications not loading properly.  I used the tools in Nortons Utilities to check the registery, and everything seemed back to normal except the shortcuts to my Microsoft Office programs were not in the programs list, but I could open the programs by going to the exe file using explore.  I thought I would use system restore  to re-set it back to before I had installed the new HD.  But when I clicked on the System Restore I got the error message that it encountered a problem and would close, so I was unable to do a restore.

After reviewing and researching the event errors, I find that many of them do have to do with system restore, more than I knew. So that is where I am now.  So the quest continues--

Thanks
Fredg33

Fredg:

You are correct that the SP is not the cause.  The situation is similar, though, because your system cannot revert back to a time prior to the new hard drive. This dog still cannot breed!

You may test System Restore by restoring your computer to a time *after* the new hard drive (like yesterday).  It should work.

To get the icons back, you may have to reinstall Microsoft Office, or you may manually create them yourself.

Doc
Hello Again

Cannot do as suggested.  That is the problem.  System Restore will not launch.  When I go to Accessories, system, system restore click on it I get the message that it has encountered a problem, and must shut down.  If I go to My Computer and try to launch it or do anything with it, I get the message previously posted.

Just before making this post, I tried to launch it in the normal way, and when it closed down I immediately went to the Event Viewer  and here is the error:

"Faulting application rstrui.exe, version 5.1.2600.2180, faulting module srrstr.dll, version 5.1.2600.2180, fault address 0x00009826."

The Help and Support page perhaps info can be obtained if I sent the report to microsoft, but doesn't indicate how to do that.

My whole system is unstable.  Booted up this morning and
after logging onto the ISP, my browser(s) wouldn't load.  Finally went back to the Last Known Good Configuration and that is where I am at this point.

The Saga  continues

FredgWouldn't hurt to try and run the System File Checker.

Click Start, Run and enter

sfc /scannow

then click OK.

More detailed information on the System File Checker can be found here.....
http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.htmlFredg:

The srrstr.dll is part of the System Restore core (which is also made up of Sr.sys, Srsvc.dll and Srclient.dll).  The rstrui.exe *is* the System Restore program.  In short: either System Restore or one of the drivers it uses (most likely srrstr.dll) is corrupted.

I agree with Gussery.  The system file checker may be able to replace one or both of these files.  I'd suggest booting to Safe Mode to run SFC.EXE.

If that doesn't work, you may be able to use the Expand command from the command prompt to replace the srrstr.dll or the rstrui.exe files.

Let us know how it goes.

Hello Gussery & Doc

Booted into Safe Mode.

Attempted to Run SFC.exe, and was told that there was no such file.

Did a search while in Safe Mode for sfc.exe and sfc.scannow and was told there was no such file.
Rebooted to Windows.

Sfc.scannow or sfc.exe would not launch from Run.

Went to the Command Prompt and launched sfc.exe and halfway though scan received the insert Disk window.  Copied the I386 folder from XP disk to the HD and changed the registry entries to show the path to the I386 folder, rebooted, and then did a complete scannow from the C prompt. Attempted to launch System restore and it gave the same old message, about needing to close, and would not start, and the event viewer showed the same message as always.

Searched the HD and all the files that show up in the error messages are there and were modified last year when SP-2 was installed.

I am now at impasse.  I haven’t FIGURED out how to use the Expand command as Doc suggested.

Thanks for all your advice and help.

Fredg
Fredg:

This is an easier way (if it works).  You should have a good copy of the srrstr.dll file and rstrui.exe executable in the i386 folder that SP2 created on your hard drive.  Replacing the current files with these good copies  *might* do the trick.  Try this:

1. Disable System Restore, then reboot to Safe Mode:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;%5BLN%5D;310405

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/boot_failsafe.mspx

2. Use Windows Explorer to navigate to the C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 folder.

3. Use Windows Explorer to open a second window and navigate to the C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder.

4. Right-click the taskbar at the bottom of the desktop and select "Tile Windows Horizontally."

5. In the i386 window, right-click the srrstr.dll file and drag it to the system32 folder and select copy.  When asked if you want to replace the srrstr.dll file, choose yes.

6. In the C:\WINDOWS\system32 window, double-click the Restore folder.

7. In the C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 folder, right-click on rstrui.exe and drag it to the C:\WINDOWS\system32\Restore window.  When asked if you want to replace the srrstr.dll file, choose yes.

8. Restart your computer to normal mode and enable System Restore once more.

9. Restart your computer to normal mode, again, and try to open System Restore.  If you do not receive an error message, try to create a restore point in System Restore.

Let us know how it goes.

Solve : what in *censored* is going on here?!?

Answer»

ok i'm on my friend's pc.  if any of you read my older pc, a few days ago, something happened to it and now i get a blank screen.  i'm suppose to start it up in Safe Mode and give it enough time to see if it does or doesn't.

anyways, i'm using my friend's pc here and everything was fine.  i only downloaded this secure shell client from my university's page, and then deleted all the icons it created, deleted the secure shell client, and then went under control panel, add/delete software and deleted it.  stupid i know, should've just went to delete it from the list first.
anyway, and then i ran Live Update on the Symantic Antivirus.  thing is, i exited out of that after it was done and lo and behold, there are ONLY THREE icons left on the desktop!  all my hws are gone, the shortcut to IE browser is gone, AIM's gone, IE Window thing is gone, all my scanned jpegs are gone, Dr Scheme is gone.  i mean, wth is going on here?!
i'm so freaked out right now.  i right clicked on Symantic on the lower right corner... and uh it refuses to open up.  i restarted this thing twice.
i'm getting beyond frustrated now.

what am i tell my best friend NOW?!err, i just discovered it won't run Symantic Antivirus either.  i'll click exit for it, and it'll tell me that the program is not responding.
none of my scanned stuff or MS Word docs are here, it starts looking for 'em.  yet, i was able to search and find a few programs like MS Office.
what in *censored* would eat up all the icons like that?  Can you run the Trend Micro Housecall on-line anti-virus scanner using Internet Explorer?

I would notify your University of your findings. It sounds like you are infected with a virus... Do as Mac said, and maybe we can pull something together...

[glb]Flame[/glb]Mac--i've downloaded the ssclient before w/o any problems and had it on my pc.
when i just turned this one on a few min's ago, Symantec displayed a LITTLE message box, only the message wouldn't load since it stopped responding.  so who knows what the notification was.
thought i'd try scanning c drive again with Sym. antivirus but now under Scan and  Scan computer, the only option is 'My Computer'.  there is no listing whatsoever of the C drive.
Mac--i will run that trend antivirus now and post the results.  thanks to both of you for help/suggestions.
i'm so frustrated, when 2 pcs are going thru freak stuff within a week of each other,  ok, not any viruses found at all.  any other virusscans i should run?
i was running the FREE Symantec Antivirus from their site, i had to terminate it halfway (had to go out for the day), it did detect 9 'threats' i think, and i saw something about 'Spyware.Marketscore', 'Adware.180search'. 'Adware.NDotNet', Sypware.Quicksearch, Adware.Minibug, Adware.Ezula.
so sounds like spyware, except what does Adware.Minibug mean?
I'll run it again and let it run thru this time, and copy n paste what it says here, if that is ok?  if not, RESPOND and let me know please.  here's what the free antivirus on Symantec website detected:

Virus Status: Infected!
Your computer is infected with at least one known threat.

//
note: i tried copy n pasting this directly and it pasted stuff that the original page didn't say.  weird.  i edited it and above is what i see.  any tips?

You should first get rid of any adware, spyware or viruses found.
You may also like to do a google search for "shelliconcache" for later on.That is some infection you have there. I missed as to which OS this is.

I like Trend Micro http://housecall.antivirus.com

And hate having an exclusion list in 'some other antivirus programs'. So make SURE you don't have any exclusions listed.

Another good tool from Trend is SysClean http://www.trendmicro.com/download/tsc.asp

And I always to this...

In Internet Explorer, Tools, IE Options, Advanced, Uncheck:

"Activate install on demand" [Other] , and, "Activate install on demand" [Internet Explorer]

How do you know you have this thing?

well i noticed that when i'd start up my computer my id for yahoo would be there but my password would be gone and i always have it save my password/id so i thought it was a lil WEIRD but didn't think anything else of it. then when i'd log on, it was like a message was popping up and then disappear immediately. well i was going through my archive one day and found this:

This ID Hacked by : Magic-PS v1.5 SE++ ===> USER=sugar_n_spice50144 PASS=***** (only my real password was there)

and then he imed me and said he wanted me to "show" for him on cam and i wouldn't do it so he signed on as me on his computer which kicked me off, then changed my password AND the info that is needed to request a new password, so I couldn't get back on. I have lost 7 accounts b/c of this. and i guess he sends messages to the ppl on my list. he sent them a link. like today, i had just gotten an account last night and then he took it today. i didn't even have it 24 hours.

i NEED to get rid of this thing.Try this online scanner http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/sugar_n_spice19
Here's some info on this trojan ......and where you can look for it ......
A lot, and I mean a lot of people are infected with Magic PS. Especially with Magic PS 1.5 Second Edition. If you don't know what is Magic PS. Magic PS is a trojan, simply a program that steal your Yahoo! Messenger 5 or 6 user name and password to the sender. Magic PS 1.5 SE no longer show itself in the Message Archive, so checking there won't help.

If the sender is stupid enough, he/she would sent you the file "sender.exe", DO NOT accept it because it is the default name for a MPS created file.

Check your computer for certain files such as these:

regsvr.exe in c:\Winnt or c:\Windows ; depends on version of Windows

MsAgent32.exe in c:\*Win installed folder*\system 32

Perflib-Perfdata in c:\*Win installed folder*\System32

PIF in c:\*Win installed folder*
NTMSJRLN in c:\*Win installed folder*\system32\NtmsData

Sender.exe

MPSmmtask0.exe in c:\Documents settings\*User Name*\Local settings\Temp

The sender.exe (can be any name) file may also contain a text string "UPX-Scrambler RC1.x -> ©OnT®oL". You can see this by using a hex editor, etc.

MPS 1.5 SE hides the (sender/hacker) Yahoo! ID in the sender.exe file, it is SCRAMBLED so even with a hex-editor, you still cannot view it. To reveal the (sender/hacker) Y! ID, simply reverse-engineer the sender.exe file.

Be warned that Magic PS 1.6 will be release in the near future. Keep an eye out on the file that whoever sent you, you'll probably be safe.

Something else we can try ........go to .......  http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html    and download HIJACKTHIS V1.99.1
once you have it installed .....run a scan , and save the log file and post it here for us to examine .
In the meantime .......stay off messenger as much as possible until we get rid of the trojan .....and most important avoid any online contact .......with your stalker .........

There is another one which is almost EXACTLY the same ...
that will run on ME .......but I have to dig out the name ...but will do and post it for you .

dl65  Spybot S&D should be in the must haves.AdAware SE, SpyBot SD & SpywareBlaster will all WORK with ME and are all free.

I use AVG Free Home Edition and have used Zone Alarm free home edition firewall successfully on ME.

You should also download HijackThis and install it to the Programs folder. Do a scan and save the Log then post the log on a SPECIALISED HJT SECURITY forum for analysis.

Don't install to a TEMP folder as HJT needs to make backups just in case you delete something important.

Solve : ie favorites can only been seen in safe mode??

Answer»

I'm running WinXP Pro and have all the updates for IE, but somehow my favorites FOLDER has gotten corrupted - again!  I can't see anything or add to it unless I'm in safe MODE.  I've run sfc /scannow and it doesn't seem to find anything wrong (it just disappears when completed).

This is the second time this has happened.  Last time I had to   create a new log in identity and transfer all my settings over!  What a hassle!!

My bookmarks are FINE in Mozilla Foxfire  - it's only IE that keeps screwing up!  Any ideas on how to fix it?  Being OK in safe mode suggests to me that something (bug) is loading in normal mode and screwing up your IE.
Have you tried running any anti-virus/spyware/hijacking software?I typically run SpyBot and LAVASOFT's AdAware on a regular basis.  I also have McAfee VirusScan Enterprise loaded at start-up.  I keep it updated and scan my pc daily.  I also loaded Microsoft's AntiSpyware and keep that running in the background as well.

I've run HiJack This and had my log files analyzed.  I removed some minor start-up things, but nothing that sounded too serious - and nothing has fixed my favorites problem.

Any more ideas? This should keep you busy until something better gets suggested.    http://www.ewido.net/en/

I formatted my harddrive and then installed Windows Me on my other computer ( same harddrive though ) because for some reason i wasnt able to install it on this one and when i put the harddrive back in this computer it would start up but all i would get is just a flash of the WinMe start up screen and then it reboots, it does the same thing in safe mode. I've ran scandisk and scanreg etc... in DOS mode and everything checks out ok. If anyone has any suggestions they would be much appreciated.  ThanksIn general, installing an OS is more than just copying and unpacking files to the HARD drive. Many files are assembled on the fly based on your hardware configuration. My guess is that you have some serious hardware conflicts that are preventing you from booting.

Try installing ME on the machine you're going to run it on. If you run into problems, get back to us. There are many knowledgable people in this forum.

Hope this helps.  Thanks for the reply Sidewinder, I've installed WinMe and other OS's plenty of times and even on this computer ( which is the one i wanted to put WinMe on )  but for some weird reason it just wont start up. I kinda DOUBT that there is any hardware conflicts cause like i said , the computer im on right now is the same one i wanted to put WinMe on , its just a seperate harddrive that i wanted to install WinMe on. I even DISCONNECTED my other 2 drives so that i wouldnt have any conflicts with them also i set the jumpers on the drive so that it was no longer a slave drive. Grrrrrrrr im lost...LOL. Ive done everything i could think of there is no reason why it shouldnt work (that i can think of ) so if you or anyone else who reads this have any ideas please send them my way. Thanks  Ill accept anybodys help...lol    PLEASEReformat and try again?Already did... a couple times. Quote

the computer im on right now is the same one i wanted to put WinMe on

I'm confused. From your posts, you want to install ME on a system that already has an OS on it?

The only thing I can think of is that the partition that CONTAINS ME has to start within the first 2G of the physical disk. Other than that I cannot think of a reason why a fresh install would fail.

Can you supply more details about your setup and what you are trying to accomplish?

Get back to us.  ok my first post when u install win on a computer and then chenge it to a diferent one w a diferent motherboard  win don't like that very mouch and resets it's self each time u try to boot even on safe mode what u wanna do is try to repair the same windows on the comp u will be using it on is this winme disk an install disk.......or a recovery disk..
did you fromat the har drive and fdisk it.....with the winme f/d boot disk? more info on system used...may help....

Solve : cannot view "my pictures"?

Answer»

I am having issues.  Earlier today i was able to view all of my pictures and now when I try, the computer basically freezes.  The only thing that I have done since was change  my display settings (MAKING my computer more COLORFUL).  I don't believe it is related but I don't know anything either.  My only alternative is to PRESS ctrl+alt+delete.  If anybody can throw some suggestions my way, I would appreciate it.  I am risking losing about 6 gigs worth the pictures.  THANX, AustinAustin Rey..... What operating SYSTEM are you using ?
If your problems started immediately after changing setting , have you set them back to the way they were ?

Exactly which settings did you change....Be specific .

Solve : HOSTS file popup help?

Answer»

Being PARANOID about running extra programs that use resources I decided to use the HOST file to block popups.
As a starting point I installed the spybot popup list with very good results.
My popup problem is now down to this site
http://www.news.com.au
There are 2 random popups there, one for Telstra and one for Match (dating service).
Can someone look at the site and suggest a blocking address for me to use?
So far I've tried...
#127.0.0.1       ad.au.doubleclick.net
#127.0.0.1       adserver.news.com.au
#127.0.0.1       adsrv.news.com.au
#127.0.0.1       newsinteractive.match.com
#127.0.0.1       server-au.imrworldwide.com
#127.0.0.1       adsfac.net
#127.0.0.1       m.doubleclick.net
#127.0.0.1       ad.doubleclick.net
#127.0.0.1       creatives.doubleclick.net
#127.0.0.1       bs.serving-sys.com
#127.0.0.1       adsmax.com
#127.0.0.1       Match.com.au
#127.0.0.1       News.com.au
...with no success. (without the #s)

Maybe someone's aftermarket popup blocker will give the CORRECT blocking address?

Note: The popups seem random so you may NEED to browse the news a little to get one to activate.

Many THANKS guys.No popups for me.  I use WinXP-SP2, Yahoo Popup blocker, Spyware Blaster.

Solve : Help and support Service to be started where??

Answer»

My help and support service apparently isn't starting but i cannot find it in the list of services to start? any ideas?
bump!?have you disabled it in msconfig....type msinfo32 in the RUN box.......what error message is given if any......info>http://www.theeldergeek.com/help_and_support.htmI get "windows could not start help and support because thwe help and support service wasn't enabled. to fix this problem start the service "help and support"

I looked in admistrators tools It isn't there. will check MSCONFIG now.

--Edit--

there are no services disabled in Msconfig either. and no help and support service listedYou checked adminstrative tools, then services?yeah FIRST place i checked, no service called Help and SupportWhat version of Windows are you running? It could be named or placed differently depending on your OS. Let me know and I'll see what I can do to help.I'm USING XP home edition with SP2I believe I have a solution for you. It seems there might have been accidental deletion of the registry key, or some kind of virus or malicious code has deleted it intentionally. Here's the solution: DOWNLOAD helpsvc.zip from this location (http://windowsxp.mvps.org/reg/helpsvc.zip) and unzip the contents. Extract helpsvc.reg to your desktop and then double-click the file to have it merge with your registry. Then you should be a ok to run Help and Support and it should now SHOW up in your Services. If it doesn't start after that, just go back into services (which it should show up now) and set it to automatic.

Let me know how this goes. If it doesn't work I'll look for another solution for you.

P.S. (http://windowsxp.mvps.org/helpsvc.htm) I found this information here.nope. still no effect.Try going to command prompt (Start>Run then enter "cmd" and press enter). Enter the command "net start helpsvc" w/o the quotes (you probably already knew this, just making sure). See if that helps.hold down the f8 on boot ......chose last good config.....and see if it fixes it.......if not go to cmd prompt.....c:\........and type reg...........options are shown......like reg/restore etc......have you had any other problems?? besides this?this is the only problem. it isn't really that big a deal. just an annoyance. I think i will leave it for the moment. i've had bad experiences with last known good configuration and don't want to use it. besides; i'm sure i can survive till long horn... however long that may be....

When I start up the computer the desktop comes up and get my browser but can't get anything to come up using the address block. Keep getting the error message send this error report in. :-/yata, yata, yata:

Please explain what you mean by "10 cd full recovery disk" and "address block."

Also, please write down the error and tell us every word of it.

Docwill check that out tonight when I get home and send it to you. SEE yaHi doc, I've been busy and just getting back to you. More details yes. Well the 10 disk set is HP reboot full recovery disks I got from HP. Works well but won't get RID of virus's. found out that I have w32.wallz and DOWNLOADED from Mcafee the latest patch for getting rid of virus's and put it on my desktop. I need to run updates after that. Started to run it last night but computer crashed again before it was down scanning. will try again tonight when I get home. I'm i on the right track here? thanksYata:

The w32.wallz worm (AKA Net-Worm.Win32.Small.b) is relatively new as it was discovered in Feb. 2005.  To remove it, you should follow these instructions:

1. Disable System Restore (Windows Me/XP).
2. Update the virus definitions.
3. Run a full system scan and delete all the files detected as W32.Wallz.
4. Delete the value that was added to the registry.

Detailed info. is found here:

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.wallz.html

IMPORTANT: Do not skip step *any* of these steps.  If you do not feel comfortable editing the Registry (step #4) let us know and one of us will explain it to you.

Blessings to you!

Solve : hit by lightning!?

Answer»

My computer will not turn off.  It just keeps blinking.  Nothing on the screen and no peeps when I put the plug back in as I have to pull the plug to shut it off.  :-/ :-/  Did lightning actually hit the HOUSE or nearby?  Was the computer on when it hit?My computer was turned off but plugged into the WALL socket in the other room as I was on my other computer but was not on-line, luckily nothing happened to it.  Other neighbours who were on-line they got sapped.  It SOUNDED as though lightning hit my steel roof.  My girlfiend took her computer in to get fixed as it wouldn't turn on as mine won't turn off. When computer is plugged in, it's in standby, same as your TV.  If TV wasn't in standby, remote wouldn't work, would it?

Your computer might be fixible, if it's just the power supply.  If anything else, it's not worth fixing.Well thanks I did learn something today about "standby" but no my T.V. wouldn't be able to turn on with the remote as I do not have a remote.  Just  bush cable meaning channel 08 and 11   I also have hope that I will be able to fix this computer I just thought I would ask as this is a good site and I have been on it a long time but this is the first time that I have posted anything.  thanks again!Get a UPS for your computer.  It's provides surge protection and power brownout protection.  UPS comes with free insurance, if your computer is ever damaged by lightning.
http://www.apc.com/products/
http://www.apc.com/support/service/equipment_protection_policy.cfmIt isn't really clear. Can you get to the desktop at all? Is it just that you need to enable APM?

Are you getting an "It's safe to turn your computer off" message, or is it as blank as you say?

Can you get into the BIOS to see if there is anything there?NO Mac I can't get anything!  The computer light just keeps blinking.  I can't even turn it off.  I hold the power button for 30 seconds and still nothing.Nancy... As Computer_Commando said, this problem might be able to get fixed... When/If you fix this issue, save yourself a lot of grief... BUY a standard surge protector! UPS is also nice, but if you aren't looking to spend that much money, you can always go with a decent surge protector... This should be the SECOND lesson that you have LEARNED from us...
