Solve : erasing hard drive?

Answer»

How do I erase my hard drive & start over?  At the C:\>
PROMPT, I have typed "formatc: /s but all I get is bad command.  Do I have to UNDERLINE format?  If so how do I do that? You need to do a C:\>format /? to SEE the commands, but C:\>format c: will format the c: partition or c: drive. Do you have an installation disk to reinstall the system?Don't know what OS you are using or want to delete but it's most unusual to format C: while it is in use, like having the OS commit suicide.  More usual to use a bootdisk in A: and format C: from there or use a bootable cd then go on to reinstall the OS.Did you type it like you posted?

Quote

"formatc: /s "

If so, at the least you need a space between "format" and "c:".  That would explain the "bad command"

Solve : Defrag freezes it up!?

Answer»

Every time I try to defrag my win 98 it freezes up....any ideas?Cathie....You might try shutting down and rebooting into safe mode and then try defragging .

dl65  disable screensavers...run aso............from majorgeeks .com....how much ram have you GOT??or rub the defrag command from the msdos prompt..in the safe mode .........>F5 key on boot...I believe you are suposed to hit the "F8" on boot, not F5. UNLESS I am wrong, I believe that was a TYPO.That's right actually.... It is F8... Good catch.... It's just a typo...

[glb]Flame[/glb]Hi,Cathie,i have found the best way to defrag is to go into"System Configuration UTILITY",in the start up menue, untick all the boxe,s exept,"System Registry, andScan Registry, then close down, restart, then defrag, when done go back into"System Configuration Utility"in "start" tick all the boxe,s you unticked earlier, then restart.I hope this will help you, best wishes,Jeffg321.

Solve : Lost ability to "make pictures smaller"?

Answer»

When right-clicking on a picture saved on our computer and GOING to "SEND to", it used to bring up another window where you could make the picture smaller so the EMAIL attachment wouldn't be huge--now it just goes to the outlook message as is, which means the outgoing email is the full size of the picture. All of the troubleshooting and help features have been searched to no avail; any idea on how to get this small but very IMPORTANT feature back?

Thanks

Solve : Looking for a little help?

Answer»

I have just formated my hard drive as I want to install windows xp. I have to reload my win 98 2nd ed as my win xp home disk is a upgrade. this is the FIRST time doing this and was wondering if there is anything I need to do or any tips that you can give me??First, I strongly recommend not upgrading to XP from 98.  I THINK you'll encounter issues later on.  If you still plan to then the install should be fine.  Install your 98 as usual then upgrade.Actually, there is no need to install Win98 first. Just install the XP disk; you will be required to prove you have an upgradable product, put in the Win98 disk at this time, and then the XP install will continue as normal.

Make sure you have GOT the drivers for your devices. You're better off getting them from the manufacturer's website rather than Microsoft. Install all your antivirus and antispy programs before you even think of getting online.

Once you get online, go to the Microsoft Update site and download all the high priority updates, use your discretion for the OPTIONAL updates. After that you should be home free, and you can install all your software.

Good luck. If you run into any PROBLEMS, get back to us. There are many people here who can help. Thanks for the info Sidewinder.  I wasn't aware that an XP upgrade was a full version.

Well.... The whole point of REINSTALLING is to erase everything... If you need drivers, then look on the internet, OR install them from the recovery CD(s) that your computer manufacturer has supplied you with.

Solve : Task manager processes confusion?

Answer»

On my laptop running WINDOWS XP Home it TAKES forever to BOOT up.  When I BRING up the task manager to see what's running there has to be a COUPLE of dozen processes going on very few of which I recognize so I am suspecting I could end a good portion of these processes without creating a major problem.  Unfortunately I don't know which processes are critical and which are not.  Anyone know where I might find such a list.  Thanks for any help.

Dan.A couple of dozen processes is not a large amount by any means, nor is it at all uncommon.

You can check each process to determine exactly what it is at....

Solve : Nothing left but windows explorer?

Answer»

I caught SOMETHING nasty back on Feb. 11th which I believe I have finally removed.

The only THING I have left is windows explorer!

No:

system restore (the calendar is missing)
internet explorer (I had to download Firefox)
run line (I have to open tasmanager)
desktop icons (mostly) don't work
start menu "programs" are gone
many other features are gone

Any advice other than re-install?

Yes,  Re-format and re-installIs it possible to take the file "system restore" uses and burn it to a disc.  Then reinstall windows instal the BURNED "system restore" file and go back?

I have one particular program that registers itself by dialing into the company which is now bankrupt.  So I would never be able to use this cherished program unless I continue to limp along or somehow fix windows.

I ordered the SP2 pack via CD in the hopes that it nmay restore some files that were corrupted.

Is all HOPE lost? Why don't you just reinstall by RUNNING repair of your OS OjasHow do I do that?

Solve : converting 6 xp floppies to cd?

Answer» HI, Once again I'll go fishing here and see if I can catch anything. Here goes:

I bought my pc with xp already installed on it. I do not own a xp install cd.

I want to use xp recovery console for formatting, diskpart, chkdsk and fixmbr.

But I don't want the hassle of the six floppys to load.

Would it take rewriting software to get the recovery console on cd's?

Where is the recovery console on the xp system stored?
Can't that file just be burned to a  bootable cd?

Solve : mouse won't click right or left side?

Answer»

i had pc reformatted because of mistakenly messing up password.  anyway, WORKED around that..reinstalled windows XP..now i can't get ISP connection. i THINK it's because when BIOS and password fixed they were set back to factory settings and we had to install a new modem once and i think the modem wasn't being detected. worked at that and now receive message 'new hardware found..generic  modem" and the darn mouse lets me click and moves, then freezes up and i can't open control panel to get modem set as default to get ISP connected..!!!

any ideas? all knowledgable help would be fully

APPRECIATED.. If you have re-installed the system it should re-installled modem/graphics/vid/drivers..factory settings do not stop net connections..unless you have used a different modem from them?.........is this an winxp upgrade from win98?/first. let me say thanks for responding...no it wasn't an upgrade.. i got stuck after an automatic update from windows and tried to reboot and clicked on wrong thing and lost my NTLDR files and unwittingly messed with the password in BIOS utilities and had to have the pc fixed. but, lin the process since we had installed a v.92 PCI FAX MODEM Value , i'm assuming it wasn't being detected. and the NEXT time i tried to check which modem it was trying to connect to..there was the balloon box saying 'New hardware found'..and the NAME of modem , the cursor on mouse froze and i couldn't click on anything to see what was going on with the new hardware or anything else. i couldn't even get the tower to turn off  without turning the power off at the power strip..i give up!! :-/

Solve : what is the difference between disk types??

Answer»

Hi all,

I just GOT a usb disk and plugged it into the usb port on the BACK of the pc (not the ones on the front)

It comes up as a "basic" disk.

What is the difference between a basic disk and an "external" disk.

thanks!basic disk is attached to the pc via an ide cable........internal..the rest answers it self..// what your problem.........is just a query...and dont add to much to your pc..??no problem with your question..and i would have always..to hand a usb flashdisk...........[PORTABLE] and is far better the a mecanicial driven device...(hard-drive) when are you going the abyss..What is an external attached to the pc by?

I got an 80g basic for $100. Much more space and less money than a flash, don't you think?

Thanks for the help!maybe usb..........popular/or Infared? liitle used?..my  personal approach..........to this problem is (1) what is the storage for......gaming personal use>>could not really CARE -less if it go up the swanee........(2).or for serious use..it all boils down to moving on in the tech/word...or (3) to impress your pals/mate...........just tell em........and save your cash......and dont tell me this 80gig is a maxtor?.......the days of the hard-drive are numbered......its now getting on to twenty-years.........sad really .......well behind the binary times..it maybe posssilbe to have a laser/hard drive//like the cd/dvddisk...powered by the motherboard
Who knows.........get a motorbike and feel the real world...thanks for the reply...go easyYes it is a Maxtor by the way. The cost of flash USB is too high, even though more high tech and faster. It all comes down to economics... The hard drive is economical thats why its still around.

I saw solid state disk drives (memory only) with EMC years ago but way too expensive.

If it were economical why not just have memory. It would all transfer at electronic speeds not mechanical. But way too expensive.

Thanks for the info.

Solve : Assistance Required?

Answer»

My problem is this:

Upon starting up Windows XP Professional, the PC Monitor will not display anything after showing the Win XP loading bar screen. It is as though the Monitor has switched off, but is still recieving a signal from the base unit, as is indicated from the LED.

It is evident that Windows is still loading up due to the PRESENCE of audio and the ABILITY to shutdown using keys, but there is no visual display. Safe Mode is operational which indicates that there is no problem with the monitor itself.

ASSUMING it was a result of a driver problem or virus (despite having Norton) the PC was reformatted YESTERDAY. Despite working perfectly for several hours, this problem has returned.

Any advice would be extremely gratefully received.
AdamHas someone turned the monitor...........display settings?/is this a laptop..chck serial cable pins...have you changed graphics card/video card...>>>>one day the terminollogy maybe altered....i await..thisNo, all of that has been covered. The monitor itself is fine, as it is working perfectly in safe mode and has been tried on another PC.

Is it possible that this is a hardware problem? I find this unlikely due to the fact that during formatting the monitor was fully operational.
Thanks for the reply
Adcheck the graphics card......ports.......for seating. Quote

...I find this unlikely due to the fact that during formatting the monitor was fully operational....

Not necessarily.  During formatting and installation, monitor is set to default VGA resolution, 640x480 60Hz.  On boot-up hit F8 and select VGA resolution for Normal Mode.  Once in Windows, try and CHANGE it.
That sorted it mate, superb. Thanks very much for the help.

I also have a PERSONAL firewall, when i put the anti virus onto my computer i had a worm that had REPLICATED over a thousand times in files and had dropped several other 'things' in it's process! I cant remember the name of the worm, but if it will help i can go through the scan logs! I was thinking that maybe it was the worm that was messing up the pc, as it wouldnt shut down before i did the virus cleaning and now it does! lol, thank you!

Solve : Connecting to the Internet/DLL error?

Answer»

I am attempting to connect a computer to the Internet after it had been formatted. However, I need help doing so.

It concerns a V.90 56000BPS Voice/Fax/Modem (Internal) of either Rockwell or Motorola (I am not sure, I could not find a name on the PCI expansion card)

I am not quite certain if the original CD is still present. The 'diskette' that seems to have the drivers that the (incredibly) small installation GUIDE refers to seems to be the CD.

The CD is called Computer Assocaties CTR21) and it comes with software, drivers and a manual.

I believe I managed to install proper drivers, but I know nothing about MODEMS and do not know how to connect to the Internet.

I have been given software from Wanadoo (Dutch) and it WORKED before the computer was formatted (Barely, actually). However, once I attempt to install the software I get an error that says

Code: [Select]OLEAUT32.dll version to old for this application. Please update your Windows OS with DCOM95 V1.3 or higher

This error occurs when I attempt to install PC Wizard 2005 as well.

The OS is Windows 98 (First Edition)

If I missed anything, please let me know.

Thanks in advance.
hey. Ok i think your problem is this  "DCOM95 V1.3"
If you cheak out this webpage it may help.  From what i gather "DCOM95" is a Windows 95 thing.

If that web adress does not help i think the only thing you can do is reformatting the HDD agian.

http://www.microsoft.com/com/dcom/dcom95/dcom1_3.asp

But i wouldent yet. Wait till one of the clever guys like FLAME or DL65 answer this.

I doubt if i helped much

[glb]R0SS[/glb]

Thank you, I have downloaded DCOM Win98 1.3. But I can not tell you if it will work or not until tommorow.

I could also use instructions on how to install a modem and identify the proper drivers. I do not know what the name of this modem is.

Quote

V.90 56000BPS Voice/Fax/Modem (Internal) of either Rockwell or Motorola

The drivers I have on the CD show a name that does not correspond with the one described above.

Ok cool.

A V.90 i think thats a Dial up one that goes on hold evry time a phone call comes through.

To install a modem go to the control panel
the phone/modems options.

then advance and click add if it does not show in the list.

Hope this helps
R0SSwait SORRY.

Not advance. click on the tab "Modems" it should say somthing like AZTECH V.90 modem Attached to COM3.

If it doesnt then click add and follow the instructions.

R0SSI need the correct drivers in order to do so, won't I? I have tried adding modems with certain drivers from the CD, but they did not seem proper.

Is there a guide on using Windows 98 to connect to the Internet through a dial up modem? You really really really really need to determine the brand and model of modem you have and then get the correct drivers from a disk or the modem manufacturer.

Everything else is wasted time until you know you have the proper drivers.

GaryI believe it concerns a Motorola SM65 internal modem. I have E-mailed Motorola for advice and drivers.

Thank you for your time.
I found the correct drivers and the modem can now (attempt to) dial in.

However, I am still uncertain of how to properly configure Windows 98 in order to allow me to dial into the Wanadoo (NL) Network.

I have tried checking the Wanadoo website, but they do not need some to have any details on how to configure Wanadoo Free.

Also, I (accidently) installed an update on the Internet Connection Wizard (1.4) and it prompted me to insert the Windows 98 CD, I did this and it could not locate any drivers. The second time I installed it again, and this time it did locate drivers.

However, after the damage had been done I continiously get an error stating that the device Nwisdon.VXD is missing from an .Ini file during startup.

How do I prevent this error from occuring?

On a side note:

When I attempted to access a DOS command prompt by using Windows (Either from Run or Accesoires) a blue screen of death came up, I did not write down the error report and I am not sure if it will return (I can not check at the moment) What could have happened?

Solve : DOS won't recognize my CD-ROM drive so I can insta?

Answer»

Hi,

I want to format the C: drive to erase all information on it because I'm selling the computer.  How do I do a QUICK format rather than a complete format so I don't take the risk of losing my CD-ROM drive, which I need for the re-installation of Window Me?

I've originally did a complete format of the C: drive using the DOS INSTRUCTION 'format C:' - this seemed to erase my CD-ROM drive.  I think this because when I opened in DOS, using the Windows Me boot disk, I can't move from the C: prompt to the D: prompt - it indicates 'INVALID DRIVE'.  To change to the CD-ROM drive, at the C: prompt, I tried typing both; 'cd D:' and just 'D:' but DOS indicates that this is an invalid drive.  I've tried doing the same thing, looking for an E: drive.  I have to get to my CD-ROM drive so that I can run the 'setup.exe' file to install Windows Me.  Maybe I deleted the CD-ROM drive when I did a complete format of the C: drive?

I got out of the problem by using the Windows XP rescue disk that I got with my new computer.  Now I have to delete Windows XP and load Windows Me in its' place on my OLD computer.   Now I have to delete Windows XP and load Windows Me in its' place on my old computer, because Windows XP is not
REGISTERED for use on my old computer.
itineran..... do you have a floppy disk drive on the pc in question ?

Let us know

DonDownload a bootdisk from Bootdisk.com and boot from it.  This will install a driver for your cdrom drive letter R:.  Run format from the A: prompt then put your cdrom disk in the slot and enter R:\SETUP to install your OS>

Good luck

Aw shucks - why didn't I think to ask if you have a floppy drive - real sloppy of me!!!

Solve : Please, please help me!!!?

Answer»

Help me, please i’m in a pickle!
I’ve got a problem with my pc and I don’t know enough about them to cure it.
I installed a 90 day free Mcafee trial. Once the 90 days were up I tried to uninstall it but it wouldn’t let me. I looked on the Mcafee website and it had instructions on how to manually remove it. I restarted the pc in safe mode and followed the instructions on which files to delete and then restarted it which seemed straight forward.
I then tried to go back online, but it wouldn’t connect. I thought that it may be because I had just installed a Sygate firewall program and it wasn’t allowing me to connect to the internet. I tried to uninstall the program using add/remove program but it said that it couldn’t uninstall because windows installer components where missing of that it was in safe mode (which it wasn’t). I assumed, maybe, that I had accidentally deleted something from the windows installer when deleting the Mcafee files.
I then tried to re-install windows xp in the hope that it would replace the missing files. It finished preparing to install and then restarted the computer. However, when re-booting an ERROR saying unable to install windows when in safe mode appeared, with only an ‘ok’ box to click. If you click ‘ok’ then it restarts and continues to install windows xp, but the same dialog box appears when it reaches the same point. I can’t seem stop windows xp installing and break the cycle. I’ve tried booting up from the resource cd but it continues to install windows. I COULD restart in DOS mode but I wouldn’t know what to do if I did. If I could, I would like to stop installing Windows and break the cycle. Can anybody please help by telling me how to do this.
You can't restart in DOS mode as there is no DOS in XP.  Have you taken the CD out of the drive after installing?  When you re-installed XP did you format first? No, I didn't. I only hoped that it would replace the lost files. I have taken out the cd but it doesn't make any difference.

I want to stop the re-installation of Window XP. Do you know how I could do this? I think the main problem is that the Pc thought that it was still in safe mode, not that files where missing. So, as to not lose anything off my c: drive i'd rather stop the re-installation and TRY a recovery (or something?) to an earlier date. Please help.It seems to me that this happened to me once on a Dell here in the office.  I had to call SUPPORT and they had some Hex value I could enter and clear the install.  Is yours by any chance a Dell?Yes, it is a Dell. Can you help me further or should i call Dell support? THANKYOU for helping me out.http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/repair_xp.htm#How%20to%20Repair%20Windows%20XP%20by%20Installing%20Over%20top%20of%20Existing%20Setup:Hi everyone,
I’d like to thank you all for the help you’ve given me. I’ve managed to sort the software out and everything is fine now. I decided to cut my losses and format the hard drive as I didn’t have too much personal data to loose.

I used the Dell PC Restore will restores your computer software back to how it was when you first received it. It saves you having to re-install the operating system, hardware drivers, and Dell software that were all pre-installed. It only took 10 minutes to reset the operating system and might be worth knowing. It only works on Dell computers bought after 15th July 2004.

If you’re interested:

1. Power the computer on.

2. When the Dell screen appears press and hold the Ctrl key on the keyboard, press the F11 key, then release them both at the same time.

The Dell PC Restore by Symantec window appears.

NOTE: Only press the keys one time, if you press them more than once you will receive a keyboard error and will have to start the process over.

3. Click the Restore button.
A caution message appears advising that all data will be lost.

4. Click the Confirm button.
The progress window appears.
When the restore is complete the message The system recovery process was successful. appears.

5. Click the Finish button.
The computer will restart.
Your software is now back to the way it was when you first received your computer.

Merlin_2, the link you gave may have work, but I did it before I saw your message. I’ll remember that for the next time I mess my system up!

It makes you appreciate sites like this when Dell software support wants to charge £21 just to say hello.

Thanks again.

Solve : deleted Test?

Answer»

I stupidly deleted the "test" segment of my computer, thinking I was getting rid of something useless. WRONG! Very important part I learned. Not only did I erase all my pictures, stored in "my documents/test", I have also lost my complete address book and all my favorites, etc, etc, etc. Is there any way to recover this? I did a system restore and though it changed it back somewhat, it did not bring all that stuff back. Anybody have any ideas?!!!!You MAY try O&O Unerase. But I don't guarantee that you will revive your files
Did you also empty Recycle Bin?  If yes...then, Good Luck!Well, I wouldn't really CALL Windows components "useless"... They all have some reason for being there....

Solve : Typing/Word Processing Problem?

Answer»

Hi,

I recently bought a secondhand laptop from a friend and am CURRENTLY running windows Xp. When typing in a program such as Microsoft Word the cursor moves throughout the page -  meaning I am constantly typing letters/words into areas that I have already finished. It quite often deletes previously typed information and SOMETIMES jumps into other opened windows/programs, which is very frustrating.

I also have the same problem when typing in other programs and using the internet to type into cells, URL's or search terms.

I am new to XP (ALWAYS used Windows 98) so if anyone can enlighten me on why this keeps occuring it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

ChrisSounds like you are inadvertantly moving the mouse by brushing against the touchpad.  At least that is where I would start, assuming it has a touchpad.  You may also want to test disabling the touchpad and using a regular mouse to see if the problem goes away.

You are IN LUCK! I had this problem, and know howto fix it! What is happening, is that ONE of your drivers for your touchpad are missing or corrupted... What I want you to do is this... Look for the recovery CDs that your computer manufacturer supplied you with, and tell me the names or lables on each of them... I will then tell you with CD to use...

[glb]Flame[/glb]control panel ..........mouse/pointer settings??Thankyou for the replies.

Unfortunately I do not have any recovery cd's and my friend is not sure where they are. If you know of any other WAY around it I am open to suggestions.

Thanks.Contact your computer manufacturer for new recovery CDs, or for the driver(s)...
