hello

currently i do simple drag/drop backups for my desktop PC using 2 portable hard drives which i rotate to remote locations.
while this is simple and basic as we all know the issue here is doing this with consistency.

i am looking for a simple way to keep a another drive connected to the desktop and have it backup any new or modified files automatically with regularity.
i am only interested in my current/working files and dont care about previous/older versions. a complete backup/copy of the hard drive option would also be nice but its not my priority.

i know there are various options out there. i am not interested in cloud/remote/subscription services at the moment.
i see windows 7-10 has a backup utility but i have never used it so dont know if its an unreliable nuisance.
i also see some external drives come with backup software but again i dont know if that's difficult or unreliable.

just looking to keep it simple without cloud subscription services
thanks in advance for any advice. I bought the Seagate Backup Plus Hub a year ago and have found it to be totally reliable to backup my files on a daily basis. The included software only backs up new files or files that have been changed after the initial total backup. (You pick the directories and files that you want backed up.) It comes in different sizes up to 10 TB.
I'm running Win 10 and have found the Windows backup to be very UNRELIABLE. When I was trying to use it I had to manually hit the backup button in settings more days than not. I quit using it when it backed up every file in the backup list giving me 2 duplicates of every file after a Windows Update. As far as Win 7 goes I cannot comment on its backup reliability.
I use Macrium Reflect free for backups for the OS and FIND it to be totally reliable. I like Macrium Reflect. It has options that might suit your needs. It is software and MOSTLY free. Use your own hardware. You need a drive larger that what you sue.

As usual, I use manual copying of important files to external HDD, but now also looking for some tools that would allow to make a copy of all software installed to avoid re-installation as it is extremely time-consuming.

i was curious on how to verify the integrity of files, and the download page for a specific file ALSO has a CODE signature certificate. how do i verify this if i am supposed to do so? i've earlier used powershell to GET the other CHECKSUMS for the file, and i know i can see the certificate in file explorer, but i don't know how to find some of the information in file explorer that they GIVE. can i also use powershell here?

I know there's a spyware plugin for websense that provides network level protection against spyware, but before spending $11,000 on that plugin I was wondering if anyone else knew of an alternative. It has to protect the whole network, be supportable and work decently well.

i have been experiencing some problems displaying video thumbnails on my file explorer this happens to mkv and WEBM files and sometimes to mp4 files this happened after i installed a new ssd and reinstalled windows 10 pro on my laptop

basically what happens instead of showing the thumbnail it SHOWS the vlc or the pot player logo

note: most of my webm files are stored on a flash drive

The VLC logo is cause it's the APP ASSIGNED to open them...
To change this rite clik whichever file...select Properties ...and change icon...select from the drop-down list and select savei TRIED to do that but the customization tab in the properties menu isn't available when i click on video files

Both computers are older Dell units, one a desktop and the other a laptop.

I have one partition on each unit that has my DATA stuff. Documents, Music, downloads and that kind of thing. Both are drive E: om each machine.
I have often used Sybc toy2.1 ** to make the laptop E: drive have an exact copy of the contents on the desktop E: drive. I use XP on both for the job.

OK, today I used it and got a lot of failures. Mostly files. Over 1500 files con not be overwritten. This is the first time ever I have got so many failures.

It came to my MIND that as human male voice frequency is around 140-180 Hz so let say i am recording youtube audio and i want to block all other frequencies other then my frequency range then how can i do it audacity, or adobe AUDITION etc Do you fully understand how the human ear receives voice information?
Research meany, many years ago by Bell labs established that the range need for humans to understand the human voice. It is about 300 to 3000 cycles. Above or below is less important to comprehend what is being said.

Can you provide more information about the environment? Perhaps their may be a simple way to reduce the noise level in the vicinity of the microphone.

EDIT: A quick Google shows most answers are about post processing. That is not what you want, - right? A noise cancelling microphone close to your mouth is the best tool available.What you are looking for is EITHER a band pass filter to keep only frequencies within a certain range or use a combination of high and low pass filters to only keep the certain frequencies you are looking for. However, this will almost certainly not have the desired effect you are looking for. While the majority of human speech is within that range, there are still frequencies outside of that, if you restrict the frequencies to that range, you're going to end up with very muffled/muddy sounding speech which will likely be unclear and difficult to understand. This will also not eliminate background noise, any background noise within that frequency range will still be there.

When I deal with audio for my YouTube videos, the only equalisation I do to the audio is to apply a high pass filter to exclude frequencies below around 100Hz as this stops my voice from "booming" and improves clarity, I'd never cut out any higher frequencies as this will just decrease clarity and make everything sound worse. The solution to your problem doesn't lie in fixing the issue of background noise after the fact, it lies in the recording itself. Try and record in as quiet an environment as possible and use a decent quality microphone that is close to you. For my videos I use a lavalier microphone clipped to my shirt. A microphone built into a laptop or camera will usually be too far away from you and will therefore pick up a large amount of background noise. Keeping the microphone close to you will mean that it can pick up more of your voice in relation to the background noise.

Software such as Audacity do support noise reduction effects which will analyse a portion of the audio without speech and use this "noise profile" to remove it from the rest of the audio. This can work as a LAST resort in situations where an issue with the recording is only discovered after it has been recorded and there is no chance to re-record however it is no substitute for getting a good quality recording in the first PLACE.

When install Scratch 3 on Windows 7/8.1, requires windows 10 only. and is there a way to run scratch 3 on windows 7/8.1?If you have a system that is Windows 10 you can install it and then copy the Scratch 3 folder contents to a thumb drive and then copy/paste that folder into the Windows 7 system and get it working I have heard, but haven't tried.

I ran into a similar issue with software that dropped support for Windows XP that would refuse to install to XP, yet i could install the software to a Windows 7 system and then copy the folder contents of it to thumb drive and copy paste that to the Windows XP system for the 32-bit version of software.

RUNNING it on Windows 7, if it works, would be at your own risk for projects getting corrupted or crashing.

How do I calculate monthly averages over a year to a know amount?

I know I have to install 7300 computers over 12 months. How do I add each MONTH to a TOTAL and calculate each months % towards the total?

The 12 months are not even divided same. (7300 / 12 = 608 computers a month) but what if I did 3 computers ONE month and 1200 another month? I need to calculate each month towards the 12 month total of 7300?

If I UNDERSTAND your concern correctly, it should be pretty straight forward.

COLUMN A = Month
Column B = Manually Enter, number of computers added
Column C = Running total of added computers (so, Cn=B1 + Cn-1)
Column D = Remaining installs (not necessary but maybe nice to know?) (so, Dn=7300-Cn)
Column E = Percent complete (=Cn/7300)

I own a digital disc repair machine that is no longer supported by its manufacturer.
It uses an Advantech TPC 642 SE - CE Panel PC with touch Screen.
I am told that the Software that runs the machine was pre installed by Advantech.
The unit used a FLASH Card to install updates.

I am working with an owner of a like machine ( down for different reason ) to get access to a working Panel PC screen unit with working software. (A)
I have found a Advantech TPC 642 SE - CE Panel PC with touch Screen Clean. (B)

MY Question: If I have one working unit with Installed Software (A) and ANOTHER working unit with NO Software (B) , Can I copy the software from A to B ?? You need to find more people who have a similar problem.

Seems any code supplied can be backed up to CF card and restored to another machine. See PAGE 36.

Also check the CF card for any registry files. NORMALLY *.cpp files.No matter whats been stated apps cannot be copied/moved to another device...it needs installed.

I had purchased a new laptop recently and a new PC about a year ago. Both have the latest Windows 10 and neither will play some DVDs I had recorded. I'm having to send back the laptop because the manual button won't open the drive. HP support was fine with that and while I was at it, I thought I'd better check out the DVD drive itself. The problem is as a lot of you already know is that Windows 10 did away with Windows media player. I downloaded VLC and what I thought was a Windows 10 media player software to find out it was not any better. The player on both the laptop and PC will not play the DVD I recorded on a Liteon recorder. It was on a DVD-RW and thought some of you might know of a free media player software I could download that might work.Most free Media Players work on most systems. If that were not so, there would be a lot of information about how the do not work.

Was wondering if there are any suggestions on Remote Access Software that is secure?

I have used CrossLoop, Teamviewer, RealVNC, and RDP in the past to connect to my home computer remotely. Real VNC however I had a system get hacked due to password exploit many years ago where someone Black VNC hacked my one system with no password required. Real VNC has since fixed that issue, but not sure if its the best out there or not.

RealVNC and RDP worked great for remote access to the computer that was hosting the service with port forwarding configuration on router, but not sure how good those are these days to avoid people hacking the computer with those services discovered. With RDP I moved the port to an unknown port number in an attempt to make it harder to hack because a port prober who would discover the port wouldn't be able to FIGURE it out by default port identification.

I like free solutions that are secure, but if I need to pay money to have a secure remote connection, I would go with that.

Later this year my job is going to have me on the road and while sure I can just bring my data with me, some sensitive data I don't like the idea of it travelling with me, but I would like to be able to access my computer at home and have access remotely to sensitive data that I don't want to connect directly to over a hotels potentially shady complimentary free wifi.

Was thinking of building a spare computer up clean just for this remote access to home data which would run just when I tell my wife or daughter to turn it on for remote access and it would be open to remote connections with correct authentication. I was then thinking that wife or daughter connect a USB stick to my home computer and this would have all the authentication and other sensitive data on it that I don't want to be travelling with but I need access to.

The information like passwords would be protected from a monkey in the middle packet sniffer because I would just connect to the remote computer at home and open up a text file on the USB stick that my daughter PLUGS into it. I then copy/paste remotely the information into the browser at the home computer of which none of this information should be passing from the clipboard buffer to the laptop at the hotel but it could be pasted into the websites that I need to have access to in order to properly authenticate and check on things and pay bills etc. Then when I am done I simply tell the computer at home to shutdown. This will clear the clipboard cache from the last saved piece of information that was copy/pasted.

Instead of just putting this computer out there ready for a connection with Real VNC I figured I'd check to SEE what suggestions people have for the best remote access software that is out there to connect to a computer and not likely to get hacked easily.

Additionally screen capture data between myself in a hotel and home I wouldn't want anyone being able to see the content of my accounting stuff while away and so I am being really careful with this vs assuming I have a good method of doing this.Since it is work related eventually and sensitive what do your IT people have for suggestions ? ?Set up an IPSec VPN. The reason you want this is because connecting via a VPN means you can access services restricted to LAN without actually connecting from your Home LAN, and without opening those services to the Internet- eg no port forwarding. By way of example, my work uses it for our Servers- I have to connect to our VPN which includes a pre-shared key as well my standard username/password, once that is established I can use a Remote Desktop Connection to connect to our servers, access our Postgres databases, view the Internal Wiki, and so on; even though nothing is port forwarded and only allows LAN IP addresses to connect.

The only caveat to this is that you would need a static IP address. Or at least a way to make it reasonably static so the IP you need to connect to isn't always changing.

Patio... Its to connect to my Home PC from when on the road to access sites that I don't want to access from the unknown of hotels free wifi, so no IT Help from IT Department. Work doesn't help with safe methods of bill paying and checking on account balances remotely. Fortunately some bills I am able to pay over the phone to avoid having to use a website but there are others that have to be paid online etc. And unfortunately my wife or daughter I don't have paying my bills etc as for the last TIME I did that it turned into a big mess. Long story short of extra money I keep in a checking account that is not listed in my ledger, that I know is there to never ever bounce a check, was discovered and spent because wife thought I had extra money to spend. We have separate accounts for money management reasons where I don't have it burning a hole in my pocket and she does at times. we almost divorced over poor money management problems. There was once a time when she handled all the bills and I paid into one account, but lots of problems with lots of money being wasted and so we now split the bills and have separate accounts and it keeps the peace at home.

I have Outlook 2019 on Windows 10. I suddenly am having a few problems with Outlook. FIRST, I can't DELETE an email from the send file. Second, every time I try to close Outlook I get the "exit WITHOUT sending/exit" box. Third, when I start my computer Outlook automatically OPENS now. I OFTEN copy and paste a graphical object (from screen capture with Snagit) into Microsoft Paint. Noticed a sudden OPTION change. After pasting an object I typically see it at the upper left corner of the screen. Then, I would drag and drop the object. This has continued to work for larger OBJECTS (in size). However, for a small object (e.g., pasting a Greek letter), I place the curse over the object but the CURSOR no longer changes to a "drag mode" (READY to drag). I stay at "resize". I hope I am making this clear. Please help. Or, is there a way to reset all option to default. I am using Windows 10.

JeffIs this a laptop/all-in-one with a built in display or is it an external monitor? That slider only works for monitors built into the computer, with external monitors you can adjust the brightness using buttons on the monitor itself.

I am part of a team DEVELOPING an application using C++ with SDL and OpenGL.

On laptops when the application is ran the DEDICATED graphics card is not USED and the GL context fails to create because the integrated graphics card does not support the version of GL we want.

I have a feeling that this problem is specific to the laptop in question and not something we can solve through code. But, if anyone knows if there is a solution that'd be great.What laptop is in question and hardware specs?What Graphics device is made available to an application is at the whim of the driver for the dedicated card.

The "proper way" to do this would be to add your application to the AMD and NVidia Application profiles to use the dedicated card when installed. Nvidia has NVAPI.DLL for accessing and setting that info (They've moved and changed how that info is saved more than once so it's not reliable accessing it directly).

The "cheat" way is to just export specific symbols from the main executable:

My computer stutters (especially on boot and in games like CS:GO). I ran bunch of tests that didn't determine much, so I thought it might be a hardware issue. My problematic drivers appear to be the NVIDIA kernel driver, NDIS, and the ntoskrnl drivers. I tested this with LatencyMon and when I did a clean boot it was even worse; I get stutters in games and FREEZES after booting up.

My specs:

CPU - I7-8086k (i7-8700k)GPU - 1080TIPSU - 750W PlatinumMotherboard - Asus z370-fCooling - Corsair H115i RAM - Corsair 16 GB Vengeance 3600mhz SSD - NVME M.2 970 EVO

All drivers are from Asus and are up to date. I also use the Nvidia driver 430.64 because it works better for me than the newest one.

I bought an MX500 SATA SSD because I thought my M.2 wasn't working; tested my RAM several times with different tools; tested my CPU with Prime95 and also did UserBenchmark and 3DMark a while back; I also brought the PC to my local computer shop and had it tested and reassembled. They said it ran fine - not sure I believe them though because I showed them the stutter in their store...

My PC has many different symptoms:

Stutter when a game launches and throughout the play session.

On bootup it freezes for 1 second in the beginning.

If I have Chrome open with a YouTube video on my second monitor and then launch CS:GO, my second monitor would freeze until the game started. I would still get the audio from the YouTube video, but the FPS would drop significantly.

When I enter BIOS my PC goes into an infinite loop of restarting and shutting down IMMEDIATELY - it will boot and then the power will just cut off. This will go on until I power down my PC and start it normally.

My BIOS is extremely laggy; when I click a tab (like Advanced Settings) the pictures freezes for 1 sec.
I tested four games with these results:

CS:GO - Stutter in the beginning and sometimes my client-side VAR jumps to 2-3 and there is some input delay.Minecraft - At launch I get insane stutter and then just occasionally. The mouse movement is a lot more choppy than in CS:GO.League of Legends - I get a little bit of stutter when opening the shop for the first time.PUBG - INSANE STUTTER when first going into a match. Getting better with occasional stutter LATER on.I also get some weird lightning effects when running Heaven Benchmark on the buildings etc.

Things I've tried:

I am at a point where I am pretty sure that my problem is hardware related or something is really messed up inside my PC.

In LatencyMon the drivers above 2ms are NVIDIA kernel driver, NDIS and the ntoskrnl drivers. Whenever the NVIDIA kernel driver hits above 2ms the interrupt to process latency goes up as well. It is strongly recommended that you run only one antivirus PROGRAM at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts and false virus alerts. I use MSE on all my computers and recommend it.there are plenty of independent comparative AV test sites you can also visit to see real-world results in protection, removal and resource USAGE of all the major players.
I ditched Nortons years ago and have solely used Defender on all my PC's since then.
I'd personally put a cautionary word against using AVG or Avast (same company now).They have a LOT of annoying pop-ups and phone home a lot of personal 'anonymous' details.

We have a problem with downloading PDF's on Chrome with Windows 10. On my WIFE's Acer computer there is no problem downloading a PDF which ends up in the Download folder as expected. But the title of the file has a big E and when we open it, instead of opening as a PDF offline it opens on Internet Explorer. My own Acer computer PDF download works fine with the same conditions. i don't know what to do with hers so that we can save a PDF and use it offline from the download folder as expected.I would install Acrobat Reader Chrome Extension from Adobe on the computer having the issue. Then file association should default then to Adobe Acrobat Reader as the handler for PDF files. Best of all the Reader is FREE. Note: I would uncheck the optional offers of McAfee software that they TRY to bundle with the reader.

For example, the part I cut away is suddenly there again and the video keeps repeating LITTLE pieces, like it's just really stuck the WHOLE time! And there's not a single problem with the audio, this one seems to play just fine and in the right way.

GOOGLE DRIVE QUESTION: For certain FILES that I try to access via File Explorer (mapped Google Drive) I get an access denied error and the files seems to not even exist at all when i try to access it, even though the file name is listed. However, if I go to Google Drive via Google Chrome and access the file, I have no problem at all. After that, if I return to File Explorer, I now have access to the file. How can I fix this for many files without access each one individually?UNINSTALL the Google Drive software and install fresh after a reboot. It will force the system to create a new index for all files and this should fix it.

I ran into a similar issue with a laptop that I had where somehow the index got messed up a few months ago. Uninstalling the software and reinstalling it forced my computer to create a new index to the files at Google at my 15GB of cloud storage. I am not aware of any repair method other than removal of the Google drive from system and reinstall of Google Drive Software.

Be sure to back up your data that is locally at your computer's Google Drive local storage to an external drive or to another area of the C: drive to protect from data loss through this process as it deconstructs the local Google Drive folder and for if my memory is correct, it wipes the data from this location as part of the uninstall.

When you install the Google Drive software again, I would have it sync the data from the cloud to the C: drive ( assuming you have plenty of free space on the C: drive ). This means the data is all downloaded from Googles Google Drive to your local computer, so it downloads everything to MAKE a the local drive space match that of what you have on the cloud. This worked, thank you. It took me a while to get up the nerve to delete Google Drive but I finally did and it went pretty good. In the process I "unlinked" my Google MAIL from Outlook which was a pain to REDO, but i got through it. Thanks Again.Awesome!

I was cleaning out PC because my new motherboard had came in, I just wanted to see if the new mother board would fit in my case, put the old one back in once I was done and it’s completely dead? All cords are plugged in I triple checked. Please help! ( I think power supply died)

First off with keeping it simple, did the rocker switch on back of power supply get accidentally bumped to off POSITION. *Yes this happens and it has HAPPENED to me before with a switch that is always in on position accidentally GETTING bumped to off position after messing with the computer.

Others who have had this issue found that its usually a missing cable that needs to be plugged in like 12V CPU power 4, 6, or 8 pin molex or that the board was damaged in the process of removal or installation. *** As well as front panel connections can be placed onto the wrong pins making it act dead because the push button to boot the system is on the wrong pins like the reset and power switch pins the connections getting swapped or staggered across wrong neighboring pins.

Seen boards dead because screws that mount the board are overtightened cracking and crushing the board layers, a slipped SCREW driver can wipe out a trace killing a critical signal that the board cant function without. As well as if the board came out hard and was flexed it can break internal traces or open up cold solder joints that were connected barely prior. *I'd also unplug and replug all connections to make sure they are good connections and inspect the pins in the connectors before plugging them back in for damage.

Power supply failing during this process is just about unheard of. I have a Windows 10 Toshiba Laptop, but this is not REPAIR or error related. Question is: Can someone know/track whether or not I am using a macro on my OWN computer, on their website? The macro is called the Automatic Mouse and Keyboard, by Robosoft, version 5.3.2.6, it is one of the more popular mouse and keyboard programs available. I do not intend to use the macro for any ILLEGAL purposes, but rather to fulfill the function that my fingers normally would on the website {which is a trading exchange platform, in website form}, during irregular hours. P.S. there is no spyware or connection between them and my computer as such, they just operate the website. Looking online I found out that this player is a MP4 player that requires a AMV file format and so it wont run .MP4 encoded files and requires videos to be converted to .AMV … more on AMV format here if curious about that format, and its really GREAT that this format is a Chinese Proprietary Format from what I read online and no documentation exists for it however "Documentation for this format is not publicly available, but Dobrica Pavlinušić reverse engineered the format[1] to produce a Perl-based decoder[3] and Pavlinušić, Tom Van Braeckel and Vladimir Voroshilov produced a version of FFmpeg that works on AMV files." : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AMV_video_format

I might just send this thing back and get a refund, but if converting the MP4 files to AMV isn't troublesome I might keep it and just convert files for it and run it with AMV files, that is if I can find a way to convert them successfully.

I found online information about FFMPEG and an instruction line that someone used that is a 2 part conversion, where the MP4 is converted into an AVI file and then AVI file converted to a AMV, but haven't been able to get it to run properly. I added wildcards of * through the instruction in hopes that it would convert all files within a folder, but it errors out.

When I'm using one controller, the other is plugged in and charging until the battery goes low, then I SWITCH. Only when using 1 of the controllers do I get notifications like I've plugged in a mic. In the top left a window appears with my name, avatar, and battery level, then I get the message 'Microphone switched to USB' or SOMETHING ALONG those lines. This happens after the controller has been on and in use for a while and I don't even have a mic plugged in.

When I'm using one controller, the other is plugged in and charging until the battery goes low, then I switch. Only when using 1 of the controllers do I get notifications like I've plugged in a mic.
