Solve : how do i run memtest??

Answer»

i RECENTLY assembled a PC to use for temporary until i can get the keyboard issue solved on my "new" computer. the PC is a 950mhz AMD duron, with 512mbs of PC133 SDRAM, Nvidia MX 100 32mb 64b AGP 4x GPU, 54x mitsumi CD rom drive, 20gb maxtor ATA100 HDD, D-link 54mb/s PCI wireless card, a promise ATA100 PCI to IDE controller to run the CD-ROM because the onboard IDE will not pick up any optical drive for some odd reason, and a 350w rexus PSU. the computer is running windows XP SP1, and is actually pretty stable aside from the random and unexplained crashes. i believe one of the 128mb sticks i have is BAD, i keep getting BSOD's. so, i downloaded memtest, however i havnt got a clue how to run it. anyone care to explain how exactly i run memtest?Put memtest on a floppy and boot from the floppy. And let it run for a few hours...any errors at all MEANS scrap the RAM.all i have is memtest.bin, rawrite.exe, and install.bat, when i put it on a floppy and attempt to boot from it it does nothing.Run the install.bat from your computer & have a FORMATTED floppy ready then boot from the floppy that memtest creates.

Solve : How can I recover a file deleted from a USB flash drive??

Answer»

I was wondering if it is possible to recover a file that was deleted from a USB flash drive. A few DAYS ago, I carelessly deleted a microsoft word document from my Sandisk flash drive because I thought I didn't need it anymore. However, I realized I still needed the document but it was too LATE. I searched the web for undelete programs to recover my deleted document, but all the programs I used failed to recover the file. Interestingly, the programs recovered FILES that I deleted months ago, yet it did not find my document that I deleted just days ago. So now I am out of ideas and really desperate right now. Is there any way I can recover my file, or is it just impossible? Don't write to the USB disk anymore and google, download and install "PC Inspector". I installed and ran PC inspector, and it recovered files I deleted a few weeks ago but it didn't recover any files I deleted a few days ago. Do you know why the program won't recover RECENTLY deleted files? If the recycle bin is global (same setting for all drives) it might be in there. Also check in the hidden RECYCLED folder. You might get lucky.Quote from: windowsguy89 on April 21, 2007, 01:39:41 PM

No, I can't tell. I'm guessing you didn't configure PC inspector properly, I find it to be quite a difficult tool but I know it is capable of recovering any file that you deleted under Windows OS. Try rerunning the scan for deleted files and try some of the other options too. Quote from: Raptor on April 21, 2007, 03:15:34 PM

Solve : WinAVI Ipod/PSP/MP4/whatever you call it?

Answer»

I don't get this. This too stopped working. Every time I try to convert a file to a MP4, it just won't do anything. The FPS rate stays at 0 and no progress gets made. It used to not be like this but something has gone wrong and I don't know what it is. I tried uninstalling, reinstalling and that don't WORK. I got the latest version of Quicktime and that too isn't working. What happened before this started?
And can you give us some info on this program, maybe a site link?
I'm not inclined to GO searching Google to find it, especially when there are MANY similar programs so I wouldn't know which was which.I already said it, I don't know how this started. I don't know what happened or anything. I have the latest version of this and the latest version of QuickTime. It is also TELLING me that I need to have QuickTime when I already have it.

Their website is www.winavi.com.Quote

I already said it, I don't know how this started. I don't know what happened or anything.
No you didn't, you said something had gone wrong. What happened before it started is a different question altogether.
Uninstall the program, then reboot and clean all folders related to it, and use CCleaner to remove junk and registry entries related to it.
Reboot again, then reinstall it.

Solve : rthdcpl.exe?

Answer»

This COMES up when I log onto my computer. The system DLL user 32.dll was relocated in memory. the application will not run properly. The relocation occcurred because the DLL C:\WINDOWS\system 32\HHCTRL.OCX occupied an address range RESERVED for Windows system DLLs. The vendor supplying the DLL should be contacted for a NEW DLL.

It all started when I defragged my computer. Next I ran the scan disk. When the computer rebooted it wanted my password but WOULD not accept it. I had to go in on Safe Mode and turn it off. The computer is running fine but this error message keeps coming up when I boot.
I don't know what it is for or what to do about it. I read some on the Internet and it is a Realtek file. This is a known glitch in the latest hotfix from the Mothership...

Click Here for the FixThank you! That worked great. No message on start up anyway. Now, this isn't new, this was GOING on at the same time, when I shut down I get the message PTAWIA has encountered a problem and has to shut down. What is PTAWIA? What can I do with it?

So if I use Norton as my main firewall, but scan with it and AVG, am I pretty much safe?

Thanks for all the help.Well, you'll be safer. You MIGHT want to get another backup scanner. In your case, I'll suggest Windows Defender. Go ahead and throw in Ad-Aware (for adware/spyware).

Now...about those files that Kaspersky keeps picking up... First of all, they're not in your sounds folder; they're in a system folder. That "Volume" doesn't refer to audio. Those files are in the subfolder _restore, which is for your System Restore backups. Go ahead and disable System Restore and run another scan with Kaspersky. Your next log will hopefully be clean, but if not, post a copy here. You can probably just ignore that Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine\15790FB3.htm, as it appears to just be an infection that Norton quarantined. Or you could have Norton delete it if you want. Shouldn't make a difference. If your log comes up clean, go ahead and turn System Restore back on and create a new restore point.

I think the reason why AVG didn't pick up those infections is because it probably doesn't have access to the SVI folder. I don't know of a way to GIVE it access (if anyone knows a way, feel free to chime in), so that's why I recommended Windows Defender, because it should be able to scan those folders/files. Or you can stick with the Kaspersky scanner, since it seems to be able to scan them just fine. The Kaspersky scanner can detect them, but not remove them. So, I don't think it would be an option for me to use.

I did disable system restore, then enabled it again as you said.

I will do another scan with Kaspersky LATER on tonight and post the log.

I actually do have Windows Defender, Adaware, and Spybot and use them regularly.

Thank you all very much for your help.Quote from: SpitefulKitty on April 18, 2007, 05:52:01 PM

Good, good. Those are all very good programs to have. You also update them on a regular basis, right?

This is why I had you disable System Restore. That should delete the files. You could gain access to the files and delete them yourself, but this is safer and easier.

Oh, and you're quite welcome. It's our joy (or at least my joy) to help out others.I did another scan, and here are the results. Only one virus, and only one infected file. They both seem to be the same thing, which is the Norton file mentioned above.

Alright, looks good. Like I said, that Norton file should be fine. Just something that Norton quarantined. You could, of COURSE, remove it if you're unsure about it. Other than that, I'd say you're good to go. Just make sure System Restore is turned on now. It looks like you've already done that, but I think I should say it anyway, just in case. Heh.Didn't this topic start out about how Norton wasn't activated (or something)?

Weird.
It's like the Simpsons. And not a single recipe either. The recipes were fun. Was it only the topic by goodnaturedog that had recipes, or were there more?Quote

The simpsons sometimes start with one objective/quest/storyline and then it changes to a completely different objective/quest/storyline, like some posts throughout CHIn our defense, we stayed within the topic of viruses the whole time. No recipes or smite wars.

Solve : Media test failure.(on system startup.)?

Answer»

I have a Toshiba Tecra M1 computer(1.6Ghz and 1024MB RAM) with Windows XP PROFESSIONAL (SP2).
At home I have a wireless connection.
Always when I start my computer it TESTS the connection:
I get a Black screen with white letters(like DOS) it contains:

Intel (R) Boot Agent GE V1.2.03
Copyright 1997-2002 Intel corporation
Attempting to establish link...

It always says error:Media test failure I think its because it test the LAN connection.
Sometimes my computer totally blocks at that application.
Than I can only shutdown with the button.(cold shutdown)
Can I remove that function?
Or can I update it sow my computer doesn't block anymore?Do you have access to BIOS settings that control this?Sounds like it's trying to boot to a PXE network card. Do what GX1-Man RECOMMENDS. In the BIOS LOOK for the Boot option and turn off the 'Boot from Lan' option.

Alan <>< Thanks for the advice.
I've entered my BIOS but I didn't found any options about LAN.
Except for the LAN connection himself.

but the doc or any ppt appears like
there is no softwere instellad
Hi

If you are running Windows 10 and an older VERSION of Office after the recent windows updates you will NEED to re do the file associations for Doc and ppt.

Have a look here for how to do this https://www.howtogeek.com/fyi/microsoft-broke-windows-10s-file-associations-with-a-botched-update/thank you for responding to me

acutely i have windows 7

and the when i OPEN theses file its open ....
do you mean file associations work fine but icons are not what you think they should be?i explain every things in this image

Yeah, That's what I thought you meant. File associations for the office files work fine, but the icon looks broken.

I would TRY to rebuild the icon cache.

Check out this tutorial here, see if it helps. Good luck.
https://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/49819-icon-cache-rebuild.html

FYI. Any icon shortcut takes very small amount of space. NOTHING to worry about.

Solve : Issue about CPU activity Logging Software??

Answer»

Hi , all I'm Robert.
Was wondering if anyone knew of any software that monitored CPU usage and when CPU usage goes over a certain % of use it would log a date/time of when it reached that threshold and then when it went back to normal idle log date/time then too.
ทางเข้าfun88
Thinking a service or program running sampling the CPU could be written that keeps an eye on CPU usage, so that the program doing the monitoring doesnt cause itself to detect itself as a false positive, but thats beyond my programing abilities as for I am not sure how I would import CPU utilization percentage value. I looked to see if there was any open source system monitoring code out there to use sections of someone elses code on how to monitor utilization of CPU, but none found. Tools out there that monitor CPU's just show real time and no logging.

I put the brakes on with coding up my own solution for this and figured I'd ask to see if anyone knows of a way to do this if some software or code already exists before I reinvent the wheel. If anyone knows of some code to achieve this to point me in the right direction if it needs to be coded up as a service that would be cool too if software doesnt exist to do this or writing up code to do it MAKES more sense vs buying a product that does the same etc.

Trying to figure out how long PROCESSES take to complete that when the process completes it stays running, so its not as easy as putting an executable into a batch file and WRITE the date time before the start of the EXE and then at then end of the EXE. Because the EXE is always running it will never GET to the end time written to log of a batch. For processes that run and close when done its easy to track how long a process took to complete, but an EXE that I dont have source code to adding logging to and I want to know how long its running against a CPU heavily for, the only way I can see this achieved is by monitoring CPU utilization and when the CPU goes over 90% to then log when this happened and then when it drops below 90% to log that date/time as well to know how long a process is taking. Check this here out. It might work for what your trying to do.

Quote

Process Monitor can do that for you.

You'll first might want to enable collection of profiling events:
Then, simply collect data for as long as you want (you may want to set up filters and enable Drop filtered events if you plan to collect for extended periods of time). Then go to Tools -> Process Activity Summary:
You'll now get a list of all active processes you recorded, with their activity over time.
You can then open the details for a single process (by double-clicking on it) and inspect the timestamps for certain events in the graph:

Solve : Can't update Windows 10 - 0x80070643?

2019-01 Update for Windows 10 Version 1803 for x64-based Systems (KB4023057) - Error 0x80070643

Windows Update, Update Orchestra, Update Remedy, BITS, CryptSVC are all enabled services.
They are working on it.
Use your backup to return to a stable machine.
Eventually Microsoft with fix it. Soon.

A recent report here:

Quote

It looks like Windows 10 KB4023057 has been re-released and the update appears to be causing unexpected issues on some machines. We have come across some isolated reports from Twitter and Reddit which revealed that Windows 10 KB4023057 installation fails
Don't hold your breath.
Sounds like you have a corrupted windows store. This would cause updates not to run. This happens a lot more often than you would think. FYI, I am a professional computer geek - I fix problems all day for users. I have seen this and fixed a corrupted windows store many times on Windows 10.

There's a bunch of things i would try -- these steps take some time to run, all will help in fixing this problem.

OPEN This Computer, right mouse click on the C: drive, choose properties. Run the Disk Cleanup. I suggest running it twice (depending on what version operating system you have you may only be able to run it once). First time I would run it to clean up general files. Once it's done run it again and let it clean up the System Files. Delete everything. It might take a real long time to run if you have never run a cleanup before.

I would also reset Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer is a key component of Windows, even if you don't use it as a browser. Open Internet Explorer, go to the Advanced Tab, click on Reset (at the bottom).

I would also reset winsock and flush dns (these are NETWORK components). To do this: go to the start BUTTON, type command prompt, right mouse click on it and choose run as administrator, make sure to run as administrator, it will not work if you don't, then type:

Type ipconfig /flushdns then press Enter.
Type netsh winsock reset catalog then press Enter.
Type netsh int ip reset reset.log then press Enter.

Reboot.

Test. If it still doesn't work. Again open command prompt as administrator. Type: sfc /scannow. This scans all your windows system files for corruption and REPAIRS them. This also will take some time. Reboot.

Test. If it still doesn't work, run the windows 10 update troubleshoot utility. You should be able to find it if you search the computer for troubleshoot updates. Make sure to click on advanced (on the left I think) and make sure the option to repair automatically is checked. Reboot once it's done.

Test again. If it still doesn't work. Try going to the start button and type wsreset, right-click the result and choose Run as administrator. Run all the test and reset everything. You might need to download/install from the app store, with all the versions of 10 I can't keep track of which ones have it and which ones have to go get it. This is the window store reset utility, fyi.

Reboot. Test again. It should be working by now.

Solve : Getting Rid of Startup Programs and Identifying what NOT to get rid of?

Answer»

I have ANYWHERE from 80 to 87 Processes going at any one time on my computer and it has slowed down my computer considerably. I assume that everything I have a Desktop ICON for is on the Startup. I have a Lenovo Ideacentre, 1 T hard drive, 6 GB RAM, Windows 7 Pro, 64 bit. There is very little space used on HD C. I found directions for stopping some of the programs from loading that I know are not essential, however, when I typed in "misconfig" at the Startup it went to a window that was not the one that it was supposed to go to in which one of the choices was STARTUP. Finally, I just typed in System Configuration at Startup and then it finally went to the correct window where I could click on the Startup tab and view the programs that were loading on startup. There were nowhere near the number of programs on the list that are listed as running Processes on the Task Manager. Programs like Amazon Music, RealPlayer, Windows Media Player, 4K You Tube to MP3, Corel, The Print Shop, Epson Printer, Coupon Printer Service, Sony Camera and Flux, were not on the Startup List. I am somewhat mystified as to where these programs are RESIDING so that I can stop them from loading. I have at times done End Process on Task Manager, but some of them just load right back up again. Anyone have any suggestions as to how to get these programs to stop loading? Thank youQuote

I assume that everything I have a Desktop Icon for is on the Startup

Programs that are shown as desktop shortcuts are not necessarily "loaded" at system startup. A desktop shortcut is there for your convenience in case you want to run the programs without having to hunt for it in the Start menu.
The most common cause of slow response is from Hard Drive FRAGMENTATION and lack of free space.
Here is an article from the CH archives:
My computer is running slow, what steps can I do to fix it?
Maybe that might help.
Use Autoruns to temporarily or permanently stop processes from loading. You can Google any process with which you are not familiar before unchecking it: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/autoruns Thank you, Allan, for your suggestion, however, not being a really savvy computer person, I was totally lost by the second paragraph. I had just assumed that when I finally found where all the startup programs were listed that the ones I didn't want to load on startup would be listed there, but they weren't. Very few were on the list, yet I have over 80 that are listed on the Task Manager. My physical Memory use was way up in the 60+%. Quite by accident, I ran across a suggestion to use a Flash Drive to take on some of the overload from the RAM on my computer. It is a program called ReadyBoost and I had a 128GB Flash Drive that I plugged into a USB port and it did drop the Physical Memory usage down to 40-50% and the computer did speed up somewhat. The Disk Defrag was at 2%, and I use CCleaner at least 2X a week, Malwarebytes nearly every day, SpywareBlaster 2X a week, and I run a Norton Full Scan about every other night. I do try to keep my computer running healthy within my limited knowledge parameters. 1) Did you download autoruns and look at the various startup items?

2) Please post a screenshot of the processes tab in task manager. For whatever reason, I could not do a screenshot so I did a Snipit file instead. The list is so long I had to do it in 2 files. Here is the First Task Manger fileIf you click on the USER NAME heading at the top, it will sort by Owner and System. The one's you are interested in are the processes loaded by the OWNER (you) and they mostly seem to be related to Real Player and Amazon Music (plus the others you mentioned above). Assuming you want to keep those two apps or services, you'll need to look in their settings for how they load or what they load at startup. And as my previous post SUGGESTED, you can use Autoruns and look for those specific processes and uncheck them if you want to. If you don't need them, go to Programs & Features and uninstall the associated apps.

BTW, why do you assume these processes are slowing your system? You should keep in mind that the more physical memory (ram) your system uses, the more efficiently it is running. The old adage is: "unused ram is wasted ram". If your system is not performing as you would like or expect, please tell us EXACTLY what is slow and we'll see if we can figure out where the problem is.I would suggest doing a few things:

First, click on the start button and type: task scheduler. It might take a minute to open. Then click on Task Scheduler Library (the top folder not a sub folder). This will show all the Tasks or Processes that run. On the right side of this window, where the list is - delete all. DO NOT remove the sub folder or the items in them on left side. Close the window.

Second, click the start button and type msconfig. This shows everything that runs on your machine. Click on the startup tab. In windows 10 it will redirect you to the task manager, startup tab. This everything that automatically starts when your computer starts up. VERY CAREFULLY go through what's in here. Whatever you uncheck, when you reboot, won't run automatically. DO NOT uncheck any microsoft processes or drivers. 3rd party programs can be unchecked. But again be very careful what you uncheck here. Also look in the processes tab, click hide microsoft processes. Also be very careful here. Anything you uncheck will not run the next time you reboot.

You can also download and install something like WhySoSlow -- https://www.resplendence.com/whysoslow which can help you pinpoint any further trouble. It helps analyze any problems and I would also let it look at the event viewer and see what is happening there.

I would also suggest to make sure you're computer is up to date with latest drivers - both windows and drivers. Driver updates are always best to get from the manufacturer not Microsoft. A lot of manufacturers have their own update utility (Dell has a great one - Dell Command Update).

Solve : batch function - need to add filename at the end of each paragraph?

Answer»

Hi, I have a bunch of text files I need to add the filename at the end of each paragraph to. There's a lot of paragraphs in each file. Ideally it would have a dash, space, then the filename (without extension) so it would LOOK something LIKE this: line with text - filename

Its data that i am going to port into excel, but i WANT the filename after each paragraph so when i have all the data in excel (I have a few hundred files) and sort them, i know what file it came from. Originally I should have created tables in word for the data, but there's so much data there now it would take me weeks (maybe longer) to convert everything into a table, ADDING the filenames manually. So I thought if I could add the filename at the end of each paragraph I could batch import it into excel, into one file, making it easier to track.

I am not sure what the best way to do this is. thanks.
May I make a suggestion.
Your are into using Excel for yer project, so use tools best suited for Excel.
You will find that most often the too used is some form of:

Tutorial:
Getting started with VBA in Office
Quote

The Office suite of applications has a rich set of features. There are many different ways to author, format, and manipulate documents, email, databases, forms, spreadsheets, and presentations. The great power of VBA programming in Office is that nearly every operation that you can perform with a mouse, keyboard, or a dialog box can also be done by using VBA. Further, if it can be done once with VBA, it can be done just as easily a hundred times. (In fact, the automation of repetitive tasks is one of the most common uses of VBA in Office.)

It may take yu some time to learn it, but after that you can do things much faster and better that using batch programs.

VBA is also found in Office Suites from other software companies. It is the de facto standard for programming in Office STUFF.

Or, yu could learn Python.

Of course, you can do it in DOS batch. If you wish, somebody will be here shortly to help you. But be prepared to make a very clear definition of your task.We need more details of the "text file" format. Is each line terminated with an LF or CR+LF, or is each "paragraph" one long (wrapped) line? Is the marker for end-of-paragraph a blank line?

Do you mean you want the text appended to the last line of each paragraph, like this?

Filby became pensive. "Clearly," the Time Traveller proceeded, "any

infirmity of the flesh, which I will explain to you in a moment, we

which we call the three planes of Space, and a fourth, Time. There is,
however, a tendency to draw an unreal distinction between the former
three dimensions and the latter, because it happens that our
consciousness moves intermittently in one direction along the latter
from the beginning to the end of our lives."

"That," said a very young man, making spasmodic efforts to relight his
cigar over the lamp; "that . . . very clear indeed."

"Now, it is very remarkable that this is so extensively overlooked,"
continued the Time Traveller, with a slight accession of cheerfulness.
"Really this is what is meant by the Fourth Dimension, though some
people who talk about the Fourth Dimension do not know they mean it. It
is only another way of looking at Time. _There is no difference between
Time and any of the three dimensions of Space except that our
consciousness moves along it_. But some foolish people have got hold of

I would like it to look like this:

They are regular paragraphs with regular paragraph markings. There's only 1 regular line in-between each one. Nothing fancy at all.

Thank you!!!

Those are not paragraphs; they are lines.

Solve : Media Player 10 no tools?

Answer»

Every time media player 10 starts sound is at lowest level. There is to be a tools menu I believe but I can not find none. Also FOUND "The tools OPTION is available on the menu bar, but by default it is not shown in Windows Media Player. You need to go to the player library to start the process. When you reach the player library section, locate the “Organize” icon and search for “Layout.” From “Layout,” click on “Show Menu Bar.” That’s all there is to it. With tools you can customize your media player to perform in a way that works for you. You can add, delete or change information and control all the DATA that is included in your media players’ library." can't find player library or no tools in it.Hi! Maybe this help you!?

Switching to the Now Playing View Mode:

At the top of WMP's screen click the View menu tab and then choose the Now Playing option.

If you don't see the main menu tab displayed at the top of WMP's screen, you can easily enable this feature by holding down the CTRL key and pressing M.

If you like using keyboard shortcuts then a quicker way to switch to this view mode is to hold down the CTRL key and press 3.

Enabling AUTOMATIC Volume Leveling:

Right-click ANYWHERE on the Now Playing screen and choose Enhancements > Crossfading and Auto Volume Leveling. You should now see this advanced option menu pop up above the Now Playing screen.

Click the Turn on Auto Volume Leveling link.

Close the settings screen by clicking the X in the top right-hand corner of the window. An aside to this...since Media Player is no longer supported you may wanna consider an alternative...such as VLC...still Free.

Hi this is really interesting, Sorry I got FIXATED on the internet causing the lockup and Patio was right about it being anytime.
The speccy reports shows TEMPS and voltages are correct so you are not over clocking. So we are left with the windows reports or an under rated power supply.

So more questions sorry.

What power supply are you using? was it new?
If you assembled the computer yourself is it possible it received static damage.

Here is a program to view windows events and there is the option to copy the whole log to a txt file or parts you are not sure about.

Await your reply
The power supply is a corsair cx550 80 plus bronze new. Yes there is a possibilty that it got static damage but i tired to keep my self grounded most of the time. Here is the list of events. Sorry about it being so long.

But again that's with very little understanding so I very well could have missed something. Please let me know if you find anything that I probably missed. Thanks so much for all your guys help with this so far as well. I tried a new motherboard, same model, and it still froze.Hi
I would try it for a few days using the motherboard graphics with the RX570 GPU card removed. If no problems then try it with a higher wattage, good QUALITY power supply with the RX570 in. Was the Corsair a new power supply with this build?

Solve : Add server-side certificate on Windows?

Answer»

I imported a P12 certificate file to system on Windows 7, on which a Tomcat WEBAPP is running. I try to retrieve certificate with following code:

Code: [Select]private KSPrivateKeyEntry getKSPrivateKeyEntry(final String alias, ProtectionParameter passwordProtection) {
KeyStore keyStore = getKeyStore();
try {
if (keyStore.isKeyEntry(alias)) {
final PrivateKeyEntry entry = (PrivateKeyEntry) keyStore.getEntry(alias, passwordProtection);
return new KSPrivateKeyEntry(alias, entry);
}
} catch (GeneralSecurityException e) {
throw new DSSException("UNABLE to retrieve key for alias '" + alias + "'", e);
}
return null;
}
Certificate not PRESENT in output and I am not sure, how to USE alias for a certificate in a proper way.

Solve : Citrix causing problems with Outlook .... need to know how to resolve?

Answer»

Can anyone help?
I have a strange issue that I do not know how to resolve.
I loaded Citrix on my PC to LOG into work from home.
But it appears to have conflicted with Outlook. Let me give you the scenarios under which it does and does not work.

I USE an XP machine with MS Office Outlook 2003.
I am currently using 3 user accounts on the machine.

After I log on initially or restart the PC my outlook account works FINE and as it should. Even if I log out of outlook and back in without logging off my user profile i can send and receive mails without problems.

If I log off my profile and into another persons profile on my machine then open outlook, I cannot send/receive on the machine and receive an ERROR that relates to not being able to identify the server and to contact the ISP. I already know the server there is fine! The simple test was restarting the PC and logging back into the second profile and then outlook works as above.

so the problem appears to occur whenever I log off the INITIAL user account. I have done the system restore (to factory restore) and reloaded everything (initially without Citrix to test if system works fine). To my dismay it does not! Still the same problem. Subsequently have loaded citrix back on.

Can anyone help?when did this start happening

did it work fine before installing critix?Quote from: Ren on April 14, 2007, 11:11:46 PM

Can you laborate? You formatted the hard drive and reinstalled Windows. Is the right? And then, you re-created the three user accounts? And, Outlook behaved the same way?

Solve : Word shutdown/file loss. HELP!?

Answer»

Hey guys,

I was working on a paper in MS Word on my NOTEBOOK. I walked away from the PC for about 10 minutes, came back, and saw that my comp. had restarted. I figured, no biggie, AutoRecover should have saved the .doc. I open Word and...nothing. I searched for .asd files, I searched for .temp files...nothing.

Is my document lost?! Can someone please help? AutoRecover was set to 10 mins. and this file was open for hours...could it be totally gone? That's why you always save files every few minutes

I REMEMBER once my computer crashed and I had to restart so I lost my work on word.
All I did was get the search BAR up in ms word and typed 'recover file' and then there were a list of documents and I got my recoverd file back.

The search bar for me is to the left of the close button at the TOP of the screen
I typed in "recover file", but I got a bunch of help links ("About document recovery," etc.). Is there some other search function I'm missing out on?You might want to check out this sight:

That might help a bit.

Solve : GIF Image Trasbparancy. Use whitem bit black.?

Answer»

I have had this issue for years. I must be ignorant about GIF transparency. I set white as the transparency color and then somehow it goes to BLACK.

Do you understand whet I mean?

My photo editor lets me pick a color for transparency. I pick the white background.
But later on it gets swapped to black instead. Why?
Some features in windows do not honor the transparency and SHOW my image on a black background, which not what I intended. Why?

What am I doing wrong? The only thing that works predictable is to not use transparency at all. That way at LEAST the white stays white.

Is there a real solution?
Typically a bright magenta is used as the transparent color in a GIF.

If a colour is transparent than the background shows through. But that relies on whatever is drawing the GIF to be aware of this. Some software may be simply drawing the image onto a new image "canvas" which would usually be ZERO'd out (black) which would result in transparent areas being black. Thanks BC,
I will try that.

UPDATE:
YEA! That works!
I set the background to withe and transparency to white and it works.

Solve : Photoshop Contrast - Please help?

Answer»

Hi,

Does anybody know exactly what PHOTOSHOP does to an image when you reduce the contrast suing the contrast adjust toll. OBVIOUSLY the difference between the darkest part of the image and the lightest part of the image is reduced but is there an equation which would let me quantify this reduction.

Any help or tips would be really appreciated.

Thanks,

Witch OS do you use?
Is it adobe photoshop?,Witch version?
It doesn't matter what OS it is, Photoshop as an executable has the same action for contrast on all OS's, because the program itself doesn't change. As for an equation for the contrast, I don't know exactly, and I think you might struggle to find one, but what it does is average out the total of all the greyscale shades (as if your image was in grayscale), and then gradually applies the grey total to the colour image you are lowering the contrast of. Effectively you could do the same thing by creating a layer of the average grey above that layer, and then adjusting the opacity. 1% opacity = -1 contrast, 70% opacity = -70 contrast, etc. Hope that helps. Thanks for the replies. That's exactly what I needed to know.

GillNo problems, glad it helped.

Solve : Slow Windows load even with SSD?

Answer»

Some 2 or 3 weeks ago I started having this problem. The Windows loading screen, which did not take 5 seconds before, now takes several minutes. Once logged in to OS, everything works fine.

I do not know if it has to do, but worth mentioning: I changed my 1TB HD (many bad sectors) for a 240GB Kingston SSD (SA400S37240G) about 1 year ago. As I'm not spacious use it just as storage device. I had NEVER had an SSD before, so my experience was one of the best, I do not know how I GOT so LONG without.

I've run benchmark tests (Data LifeGuard, CrystalDiskInfo, and CrystalDiskMark) on the SSD, and they've all looked healthy and perfectly functional. I've run around several antivirus and antispyware (ESET, Norton Rescue Tool, CCleaner, SUPERAntispyware, Karspersky and Windows Defender, of course). They found one or another suspect or allegedly dangerous file, but they did not SOLVE the problem. I also ran Defraggler to see the level of fragmentation (17%) as a curiosity, since as far as I know, fragmentation, for an SSD, makes no difference.

Everything indicates that SSD is not the culprit, but I do not know everything and I'm here because of it. THANKS for your help.

Solve : Embarrassing . . . can't get Photoshop text to work . . . .?

Answer»

My text tool for CS2 has gone on strike. When I click where i want to PUT text, the cursor turns into a small solid dark box. I type but no text appears EXCEPT it renames the layer with whatever I am typing. Layer is on top and not locked. It must be somewhere set in my preferences because it only does this on my home version; not when I'm using CS2 somewhere else. Please HELP!Have you checked Photoshops website for a solution?

ALAN <>< This wouldn't happen to be slightly rectangular, and at the start and bottom of where the text would be would it? Because if so, that HAPPENS every time you try and start to type the text in CS. It's a way of showing you where your text starts. I had a look through CS and couldn't get any other sort of black box to appear, so as far as I can tell, it would either be a program glitch (in which case I would re-install, that doesn't take too long anyway), or you cannot see the text because the text colour is White against white background, black against black background, etc. It's not the regular "text-starts-here" box . . . just a little solid square, no blinking cursor or anything else. I checked the color also . . . tried different colored text and backgrounds . . . nada. I think you're right that it's a glitch . . . . gonna keep tweaking, though, before I reinstall. Thanks for taking a look.No problems. If you need any further help though, with this or any other photoshop problem (whether technical or general) gimme a hollar, otherwise good luck.

Solve : OSX and DOS together on single disk and working!?

Answer»

Hi!

Last TIME I was looking for solution how to use DOS, Windows and OSX on single harddrive.
All replies on this forum were that's impossible.
Now - I can say only: It needs only bit of patience to get it work!

How I created single disk with working OSX and DOS?
1. take one empty disk
2. install there DOS
3. create or get boot floppy for DOS
4. insert disk into other computer and make disk image of DOS partition
5. insert that disk into computer for use with OSX
6. insert OSX install DVD into DRIVE and boot
7. on disk by Disk Tool create new partition table and use 2 partitions: MacOS Journaled and empty space - fit them by your wish
8. insert disk to other computer and restore image to empty space defined in OSX partition table
9. insert disk back and install OSX
That's all!
Now to boot into DOS it needs only boot from floppy.

If is anyone interest, I can provide details.

Used OSes and hardware:
OSX86 10.4 Tiger 32-bit
MS-DOS 7.10 and Windows 3.11 for Workgroups
notebook HP Compaq Evo n1000v with floppy and DVD drive

possible alternatives:
external floppy drive
other OSX86
maybe earlier DOS version

Please don't crucify me for use OSX on non-Apple hardware.
Thank you all for each help to get this work!
I can provide details about all, but please leave for me patience for missing free time.

MiroYesterday I added Windows XP Service PACK 3 and created startup floppy. Now booting to XP too...

Solve : Visual Studio 6 installation failed - now impossible to start it again?

Answer»

Hi!

I have installed Windows 10.1809 x64 Pro and used VS6Installer to install Visual Studio 6.
Installation failed and I tried it again - problem is that it starts at point where it never reached - offers me to install InstallShield.
But all parts before were not installed.

I cleaned all known from VS6Installer, checked traces by SoftOrganizer, reboot but it is not possible to start VS6 installation from scratch.

I know that it is easy to use restore point, but I don't want to do it 'cause it is rare when is system correctly recovered.
Can anybody help me to clean traces where I searched not?

Thank you for each help.
MiroYou may have to use a special program to get rid of the things left over.

You should know that Visual Studio 6 is an old PRODUCT and shouldn't installed on a newer system. But it can be done. Carefully. This links says so:

VS6Installer is tool to help installing VS6 on Windows 10 - nothing more.

COULD I have missed a step in the download/installation? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

i no i sound like a retard wen i ask these really stupid questions, but im having sum trouble with a batch file. anyways, im taking online lessons for batch files a this site called allenware.com. it is set up to teach batch files for windows 95/98/NT, and of coruse my os is xp, anyways for lesson 3 is TALKING about the errorlevel, and since its set up for 95-NT, its differnent on my computer. since its different, they have a downloadable lesson that sends a batchfile called rcode, all it does is MAKE an easyer way to the errorlevel, but in the lesson that comes with it, it says i have to type rcode choice, it will show the errorlevel but then it says that it could not find choice.
so if any1 could, i could use some HELP either figuring out wat im doing wrong, or just help me learn ERROR level, that would be greatR Code Tutorial

This may help...thxFor the Allenware Batch Course lesson 3, I'm guessing you need a copy of choice.exe which does not ship with WinXP.

You can download a free copy Here

Good luck with your lessons.

The download is a zip file, why I don't know, the program is only 5239 bytes to begin with.thx, this has been bugging me for the last like week

Solve : A Quck MP4 toMP3 converter??

Answer»

Instead of searching Google, I thunk it would be easier to just ask.
I have a NICE CONFECTION MP4 music clips. I wood like to put the audio on an iPod device. Either MP3 or WAV. It should not hard to do. Right?
Does anybody know of a quick easy WAY to do this? ffmpeg
I like to use xmedia recode to convert between different filetypes. It's fast, free and just does its job.

Of all the various filetypes that it can support and convert into, mp3 is one of them.To make an mp3 from every mp4 in a folder

This is at the prompt,

for %A in (*.mp4) do ffmpeg -i "%A" -b:a 192K -vn "%~nA.mp3"

In a BATCH script double up the % signs so % becomes %% like this...

for %%A in (*.mp4) do ffmpeg -i "%%A" -b:a 192K -vn "%%~nA.mp3"

Makes an mp3 with the same NAME as the mp4 so

Song Name.mp4 ---> Song Name.mp3

Where it says 192K that is the bitrate of the output mp3, could be 64K, 128K, 320K etc

Thank you. I will use it right away.

Solve : keyboard works until operating system loads?

Answer»

I have had this problem for a few months. I have a toshiba satellite a45-s150 and I am using windows xp pro. When I first turn on the laptop I am able to input the hard disk password. After that my keyboard will only type a few keys...f - find, h - history, m - enter key, etc. I reistalled windows a few times, CLEAN installation, and since the keyboard doesn't work this was a problem. I kept pushing keys until I finally got the windows install started. The product key would not type so I went back to the languages menu and added dyvork and them removed dyvork and my keyboard let me type the product key...... but after windows was installed and loaded the keyboard still will not work, even if I go to control panel and REPEAT the steps i just mentioned. I finally downloaded a virtual keyboard called IMG My T-Touch. For whatever reason if I open this program my keyboard works perfectly FINE. But I only download the demo copy and now I have to open this program in safe mode for the keyboard to work. Otherwise every few letters I have to reopen T-Touch and it is very frustrating. Does anyone know what I need to do to fix this? I am pretty much ready to throw this laptop out the window.. Please help!At some point, you configured the laptop to work with the wrong SET of keys. I suggest you read the manual.

Solve : Outlook2003 keeps sending sent messages, also tries to send something I dont see?

Answer»

I am running WinXP SP2, Office 2003 with Outlook 2003. I am the only user and I run under full administrator rights.
This is what happens:
First part : When I send an email, sometimes it STAYS in the "emails to be sent" folder and keeps being sent until I delete it.
SECOND part: Even with the "emails to be sent" folder empty, the outlook shows that it is sending some two emails all the time, I have no idea what is it trying to send. It always shows an arreor mesage at the end. My guess is it has some information stored somewhere that there are emails waiting for being sent, but I cant find that...
All help will be very much appreciated. Thank you. It's possible your machine has been compromised.

Outlook has no "emails to be sent" folder unless you created it. It does have an Outbox folder. Do you mean the Outbox?

If you go to Tools, Options, Mail SETUP, is the box for "Send immediately when connected" checked? Are these just text mails or large files with attachments? It may fail to send them and is waiting for you to fix the problem but it'll keep RETRYING.. How about some error logs? The light grows dimmer...

Solve : what to delete or not?

Answer»

In control PANEL programs & features ; so full of STUFF, what to delete or keep ? Not even sure what some of it is ! And AVG-I deleted this program, yet it seems to be here yet. How do you get rid of any program that doesn't seem to LEAVE ?1) Unless your hd is full (or close to full), there is no need to uninstall anything.
2) Unless you have another anti virus installed, why would you delete AVG?
3) When you say you "deleted" a program, may I assume you ACTUALLY uninstalled it?If AVG was uninstalled properly then it should be gone. Only seen the problem with it remaining when someone has gone to the INSTALLATION location and manually deleted the program without uninstalling it in the control panel.

I also am wondering why you uninstalled a program that would protect you from malware/virus infections. Without it your system can get infected with malware or a virus.

If you have the system recovery media, it might be a good idea to backup whatever important data you have to an external drive or cloud storage and then perform a clean reinstall of the OS so the computer is like new from factory. If this computer is a custom built system then back up data to external drive or cloud storage and then wipe the system clean and perform a clean install to undo whatever problems you created by removing programs that should be left alone unless you know what they are and what your doing.

Solve : Publisher printing error?

Answer»

Every time I try to print a particular Publisher file, I get a blue screen with: PCL XL Error; Subsystem: I/O; Error InputReadError; Operator: EndPage. Then my computer automatically RESTARTS. I am desperate for help! I need this every WEEK, and it did not start until my Windows 10 computer updated. Anybody?? I have tried everything. OH - this file will print on my small desk printer, but not on our big printer. That sounds like an upcoming HDD failure to me...

DLoad and run the free diags from the HDD manuf. site....follow the guide to create it on a bootable USB stik.Patio, I have no idea what that means! All hard drive manufacturers have Free diagnostic software for checking the health of the drive...

Find out what brand it is and visit that manuf. site for info...Thank you! I did find the manufacturer (I think) but not knowledgeable enough to proceed. Scared I will make it even worse if I don't know what I'm doing. Thanks for your help!Find someone who knows a bit more about PC's to assist and teach you...

It's not quite as hard as it sounds....

Best of Luck.

BTW run the Long test for brst results.
Is it only the one file that is a problem? Everything else prints okay?

It does not sound like a hard drive issue to me. First thing I suggest you try is to roll-back (uninstall) the recent update. I remember several years ago a very similar issue was caused by a Windows Update.
To roll back you have two easy methods:
1) Go to Control PANEL - Programs & Features. On the left side click on "View Installed Updates". Find the date of the problematic update and uninstall it or

2) Use System Restore to return to a time prior to the update.Good ideas...
However I/O errors generally are caused by hard drives acting up and/or cabling issues.
I wouldn't think that printing a file would cause a PC restart...which is what FLAGGED for me.

Solve : Mozzila Firefox> Favorites?

Answer»

I can easily find the Favorites file in Microsoft IE, but not in FIREFOX. Knows anyone where is it hidden?? There are no favourites in Mozilla Firefox, however, there are bookmarks. They should be LOCATED in C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\profilenameAnd they will be called bookmarks.html too.Click on Bookmarks in the main MENU at the top of the BROWSER page...Quote

Favorites file
Seemed to me that they were asking where the bookmarks file was, rather than where to find the bookmarks themselves.I'll tell what I did:
Under menu > bookmarks > Organize > file > export,
I made a copy (bookmarks.html) in a file and sent a shortcut to the desktop. Why not just view them the regular way, from the browser menu?Firefox can inport your IE favorites, making them available from the bookmarks tab.

Solve : Help withAudacity to split track in two.?

Answer»

I forgot how to use Audacity.
Here is where I am in the manual.
https://manual.audacityteam.org/man/audacity_tracks_and_clips.html
I have some voice tracks that I would like to split.
EXAMPLE; A selection is ALMOST 17 minutes long. I would like it to be about half size. I can find a place where it takes a pause and I can put a marker there. Now how can I simply BREAK it into two? Each half about 8 or 9 minuets.

Say the track was named
News-Mar19.wav

I would like it to become
News-Mar19A.wav
News-Mar19B.wav

Is there some way to automate part of this? I could find the pause and put a mark there. The I would like to just hit a special key and it wold finish up the work.

Any ideas? If you use Edit->Split, you can double click one or the other side of the split to select that section. You can then use File->Export Selection to save that section to a file. I don't know of a good way off-hand to automate the save/names after doing the split, though.Thais, I will give it a try.

Solve : Computer kicking me off internet after 10 minutes - latest of many problems?

Answer»

I have a three year old Compaq Presario and a cable modem. For about a year now, every time I start the computer, an error message reads: “Invalid BackWeb Application Id “1940576””. This has never really been an issue, but it might have SOMETHING to do with the numerous problems I’ve been having recently. About a week ago, I noticed my graphics “flip”, i.e. all the graphics would turn into the safe mode format for a second, and then they would flip back to the normal format. Also, the sound on my computer would randomly stop working. All this would go away after rebooting, only to return later in my session. I downloaded those MICROSOFT Updates and installed Norton Antivirus. After those two operations, my computer went into a reboot loop, requiring a trip into Best Buy, where they told me that I did not have a virus and that it was probably a software problem, requiring 120 dollars worth of investigating and possibly a wipe of the hard drive. I promptly said goodbye and tried fixing it on my own. My computer was no longer in a reboot loop, so I did a system restore (getting rid of Norton in the process) and a defragment of both the C and D drives. I also re-installed the Microsoft Updates. Then my latest problems came up. I no longer have sound problems, but a few minutes into my session, I GET an error message (besides the one mentioned earlier), saying: “Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close.” Also, my computer kicks me off the internet 10 minutes into my session. A reboot cures this, only to kick me off the internet after ANOTHER 10 minutes.

Any ideas as to what’s wrong?
Sounds like a reformat to me. what's a reformat, and how do i do it?Well, you take the Windows XP CD, insert it upon boot and choose to reinstall Windows.

Unless you want to spend a lot of time on telling us details and us giving suggestions that may or may not work in the end I think it'd be prudent to start over with a fresh installation. Solves a lot of problems. Just MAKE sure you back-up whatever you wish to keep first.

Solve : Rules Wizard Not Always Workingin Outlook 2002?

Answer»

I have recently decided to add my wife's email account to our Outlook 2002. She was using Outlook Express before this. I set up multiple inbox folders; one for each e-mail account. Then, I used the Rules Wizard to send emails to the different folders, depending on who they were sent to.

For a reason I have yet to figure out, when I try applying the rule to my wife's email, nothing happens. The rule is run but the emails stay in the main inbox, and are not moved to the specific inbox I NAMED for her.

The only reason I can think of that might be causing this is I've made her email the default, because she doesn't want to have to remember to change the SENDER in 'options' when she's SENDING an email. Is the fact that her account is the default be the reason behind the rules wizard not functioning properly for her?

Solve : ActiveX component can’t create object runtime error 429?

Answer»

I'm used to answering questions here and not usually asking them, but this one really has me stumped. And I am ready to accept that this program just won't run on Windows 10.

I'm trying to get a very old program running. Something that is probably 15+ years old. The program has worked fine for this company up through Windows 7, but for some reason Windows 10 just won't run it. When attempting to run it, it gives the error "ActiveX component can’t create object runtime error 429".

Knowledge of the program is limited. The company has been using it much longer than most of its current employees have been here. Attempts to find the original programmer or the company that created it have failed. I don't even know what the proper name of the program is.

Here's what I do know:
1. The executable and installation PATH both indicate the name is something along the lines of "prodrpts". The installation path is ...\Prodrpts\ and the executable is called prodrpts32s.exe.

2. It works fine on Windows XP, 7, and Server 2008. The error only occurs when trying to run it on Windows 10.

3. It was a specialized program used in the wiring harness industry.

4. The error happens on Windows 10 WHETHER running it locally or from a network share.

I have seen suggestions relating to the error, but not SPECIFICALLY this program, that recommend using /regserver to register the program, but this has not helped. There are no DLL or OCX files indicated in the error or present in the installation folder.

Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?Sounds like it was a Visual Basic 6 Program. As you've found the error messages are not helpful.

I presume that you did, though you did not mention whether you have tried running as Administrator? Not sure why it would need it in 10 and not 7 but hey who knows.

I found some stuff Here About it. OLEVIEW looked the most promising but I wasn't able to figure out how to use it to view the references- It wouldn't open any VB6 executables I tried. Perhaps you will have better luck?

Another perhaps more accessible idea is using a tool like Process Monitor. If you start capturing events, run the program in question, and then stop capturing events, You should be able to capture the appropriate event where the program is LOOKING for a specific dll, executable, or ocx file and failing to load it. (There will be a lot of events but you should be able to filter it by using right click to exclude other processes or other operations.BC! Good to see you again, mate.

Yep, did try it logged in as an administrator, ran as administrator, and even tried compatibility mode for everything all the way back to XP. I'll have a look at OLEVIEW and Process Monitor. Maybe I can track down what's making it not want to work.

I think you're right about Visual Basic though. Seem to have come across a couple references to that in my SEARCH for an answer.BC! Thanks for a nudge in the right direction.

I was able to identify the OCX and DLL files it was looking for, regsvr32 all of them, and it bloody works!

Thanks for the help, my friend!I get the same error in XP Mode. That's a Win XP with SP3 VM. This runs on a Win XP SP2 VM, is there potentially something in SP3 that would have caused this to occur? Or is it just a fact of it being XP Mode?Quote from: Brooke741 on November 30, 2018, 03:29:17 AM

Solve : Need help with HP Notebook PC?

Answer»

So, my sister wanted me to fix her HP notebook laptop. It was Windows 10. I can't fix it. It started as not able to click on the ICONS, or access the START menu. I tried to do a restore, (maybe it was an update) didn't work, among other things under the troubleshoot menu. Nothing was working, it KEPT saying "failed." So as a last resort, I tried to reset the PC. Still said it failed, so everything was as the same. Suddenly, I got a black screen saying "boot device not found lease install an operating system on your hard drive."

I've hit the F2 key and did a hard drive check, the quick one says that the SMART Check passed, but the short DST failed. Then on the extensive one, I get the same information. SMART: Passed Long DST failed.

I don't know what to do now. Thanks!Replace the HDD and do a clean install of Windows...save any data from the old drive before it gets worse.
