I have a vp=eye brand webcam and have screwed around with it before making little videos and whatnot......The videos used to play using the mmvem player provided with the software. By accident I changed the program the player used to play the .vem extension. Of course winamp couldnt play the FILE and I switched it back to mmvem and it hasnt worked since! I tried uninstalling and REINSTALLING EVERYTHING.....I have a few homeade vids I want to see but I cant access them. Any ideas???

oh and when i TRY to open them I get an error msg SAYING error cannot open (folder name) .vemLets try a System Restore... Before I go on, which operating system are you using?

A few months ago both Griff & quaxo had reccomended Free Download Manager to solve my over-the-limit MB download problems. It worked just ducky and when I got my new computer up and running I downloaded Free Download Manager again, however, when I went to the Microsoft Updates page and clicked on the Download button to download over 200MB of security & program updates, the Download Manager window didn't pop up so that I could schedule the download for between 2:00AM-7:00AM. Consequently it download over 200 MB of updates and when that HAPPENS it cuts my internet connection to just barely moving for a period of 24 hours. Has anyone else had that problem with Free Download Manager not recognizing Microsoft's downloads? If so, is there a way around it? ThanksFDM only allows you to download files directly from the Web, i.e. through a web BROWSER or using FTP.Thank you for answering but I don't understand what it means? I was on the Microsoft website using IE when I clicked on the Download Button and the download started immediately instead of going through FDM. I haven't had the problem with other websites when I've gone there for downloads. What is FTP? I went to the Microsoft website today and turned off Automatic Updates and chose to have them notify me of available updates instead. Recently I purchased an Asus Essentio CG5270, desktop with Windows 7 Home Premium, which I upgraded at the time of purchase to Windows 7 Professional, 64 bit SYSTEM that and I believe it also has 32 bit. When it boots up it gives me a choice of opening in Windows 7 or Vista. I am assuming the Vista is running on 32 bit. It appears to have a partitioned HD, C for .exe files, and D for Data which is presently empty. Before my Windows XP computer crashed I had backed up all my data and pictures files to an external HD. I am running dual Acer flatscreen monitors on the Asus.

On the OLD XP computer I had been running Quick Books Pro 2008 which will run on Vista, and Print Shop 22 that will run on XP. (I believe I will have to upgrade to a Print Shop version that will run on Windows 7 & a 64 bit system in order to open up the files I have saved.) I also have quite a few .doc files that were generated on Microsoft Office 97 that I would LIKE to access with Open Office. My questions are: If I bootup using the Vista choice (which I haven't done as yet) can I install Quick Books running Vista? Can I download Open Office while running Vista? I checked and it doesn't appear that there is a version of Open Office that will run on a Windows 7, 64 bit system as yet.

I haven't been able to get any sound from this computer. I have Altec Lansing speakers that I've had since 1997, that have worked on Windows 95, 2000 & XP. They are really nice speakers so I've never bothered getting NEWER ones. There 6 choices on the back of this new machine to plug in speakers. So far, I've tried two of them and the speakers still aren't working. They are not showing up under the Devices & Printers, if that is where they are supposed to appear. Any suggestions as to what the problem could be?

Recently I bought a new computer, Win 7 Pro, 64 bit system that many of my programs would not run on. One of these was Quick Books 2008 so installed QBs on my Vista laptop, downloaded the backup FILES I had on my external HD for QB to the laptop and managed to open my files. Great so far. A week later I had to make address changes to QBs, forgot that it was on the laptop and tried to bring up the files on the Win 7 Pro. There were QB files on the Win Pro machine because I had downloaded everything that was on the external HD to the new computer. Of course they weren't opening when I tried and I got a window that kept asking me what program I would like to use and I was looking through the list but couldn't find QB program (FORGETTING totally that it wasn't on that machine.) I stupidly tried to open them a couple of times and after the third time of closing that window...........all my QB files turned into .pdf files! I have no idea how it happened. Now I am afraid that if I do get an updated version of QB that will work on the Win 7 Pro computer, it will convert the QB files to .pdf. It changed all the QB files on my external HD to .pdf, too. Hi, I have MICROSOFT picture it that a friend had MADE a copy of for me(just being honest) that I used on my previous pc with win98se. It WORKED, but with issues, her original didn't give her any trouble.
I now have a new pc with win xp and installed the picture it. The problems have increased to the point that I can't even print anything as the software just freezes up. I use this program for my home-based child care business and really LIKE it. I also have Printhouse, but I couldn't import pics from online etc...so I didn't like it as much. I have also used Adobe, but found it kind of complicated compared to the ease of use with Picture it.
Can anyone tell me how I can fix this problem? And if it can't is there another program that someone could recommend to be like it? I don't think Microsoft is making picture it anymore??Correct...
Microsoft stopped support of it around 3 YEARS ago...
Here is a security patch for it released awhile ago that may get it running again but no guarantees. Just DLoad the patch to the Desktop and run it from there...re-boot before trying Picture it.

A few other image apps that are FREE would be Irfanview and Gimp.

My wife uses as one of her computers an O/S of Win ME with all the updates provided up to the support cessation in Sept. 2006. A problem has arisen in the past 2 weeks that is as follows.
1.When connecting to the internet via DSL her home page in IE does appear and remain so.
2.From the google link on her home page she can access a google search result.
3.however when she tries to access any link from the resultant page it almost immediately goes to the Microsoft warning that "IE has encountered an error and must close,etc,etc".
4.If she tries to access ANY URL address either directly or from one of her desktop short cuts it immediately displays the warning.
5. Therefore any attempt at research on that computer for solutions is impossible.
6.As is any attempt to install any other browser or anything for that matter.
Now what i have done to try and REMEDY the problem:
1.I attempted a repair (from add/remove programs on the IE version 6).No change.
2.I tried a "return to original configuration" from add/remove programs. Result removed IE 6 and returned to 5.5 .However problem remained.
3.Outlook Express is unaffected and continues to work as designed.
4.I was able to change her home page (to Google) and the same sequence of events occur from that page as well.
Any solution that requires the use of another computer to download and install something to correct this will need to be able to do so via a USB flash drive process.
We do have the original win ME operating system disk. So if something is suggested that involves that please be specific as she does NOT want to lose years of accumulated photos and data that are on that computer.
For those of you that may be tempted to use this post as a rant against Win Me please try to resist. She has been using this O/S for 9 years and this is her 1st ever problem. Half the marriages don't last that long. 3. But what(in my opinion ) becomes interesting is that the message i received from IE 6 about the problem it was having was "IE has caused an error in flash.osx. IE will now close--etc.etc.
4.This smells like a "flash player" issue to me.

Just recently my Microsoft Outlook has been keeping any large emails in the Outbox & not going to the SENT items even though the email has been sent. It continually sends the email while in the Outbox. I am still able to SEND small emails with no problems. I am also able to receive large files. The following error comes up: SENDING report error (oX800421oB) The operation timed out WAITING for a response from the sending SMTP server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet Service Provider.

I Exported my Adress Book as .TXT File from my OUTLOOK Express.

Then my computer whent down.

Why did it let me Export as TXT if it can't see it???

Every web site I go to Firefox make a little Tab right under the address Bar so if you want to go to it you can just click on it.

And I know you can close the Tabs by hand but can you stop Firefox 3 from making Tabs under the Address Bar?

When I have GOOGLE home page up I go into Firefox Options and click on SHOW Home Page.

Then under that I click on Use Current Page.

But what ever web page I was on last befor cloing Firefox 3 that will be my Home Page?

I have installed deep freeze on my client's pc workstations. The client's PCs are running under domain server. The PCs are used by staffs and everytime it takes a considerate AMOUNT of time (5-10minutes) to enter windows after entering their login SCREEN. I am guessing that it is because the deep freeze program that always erasing their profile after shutdown/ reboot.

Is there a way to solve this problem???
I need the deep freeze to be installed as I don't want any changes takes PLACE on the system/ c DRIVE while on d drive is free to do so.

Is there anyway to speed up roxio easy media creator 10. It takes almost 2 minutes for the program to load. In video wave it also takes 30 seconds just to add one transition. I am running it on a windows vista 64bit desktop.

Are there any free programs out there for something like thiscomputer 10, A COUPLE of points (though it will NOT address your quest for a "free editing" solution). I have had many VERSIONS (though not 10) of Roxio and Nero and have dumped them all. In part for some of the same issues you are stating --but also many others. I am now using a program by "Magix' called "Movies on Cd & DVD". I believe their current version is ver 7. It has 3 separate components to it (all with editing functions) 1=Photo manager 2. = Audio manager and 3.=Movie manager. It is a marvelous software program which i can highly recommend. If you go to their web PAGE i believe there are "free" limited time use of the software. So you can try it and see what you think. Anyone use CutePDF to convert MS Office DOCUMENT to PDF? I have some hyperlinks in these office documents and I want to retain them when converting to PDF so that I don't need to do it manually in Acrobat. Can anyone help? I haven't used CutePDF. Sorry I am a real computer novice so please bear with me.

Both Spybot and Superanti spyware were installed on my PC. Since running a scan in both applications my PC is running extremely slow. Types of problems range from when I FIRST open Mozilla it takes a long time to open, navigating WITHIN Yahoo or even searching within google.

I tried to uninstall both programs via add or remove programs believing that this may rectify the problem unfortunately it hasn't.

I then tried to do a system restore to an earlier time but again this does not seem to have resolved the problem.

Can anyone please advise as to what may be the problem and how I should go about this.

From what I can gather there was just general stuff found like cookies. No major threats. My virus protection is AVG and I run regular scans. Having not used spybot before I can only guess at to what I am typing, but the items that were found were "treated" (not sure if that's the right word).

Once my laptop BEGAN to slow down my friend then removed spybot by uninstalling it.

I'm not sure if they did the right thing as now that I'm beginning to look into it shouldn't they have gone back and somehow reversed or taken those items out of quarantine (if that's how they removed the cookies) before uninstalling the program???

As there was no improvement in speed once the program was removed I myself went back and performed a system restore to a previous date when it was operating perfectly.

Ok, I have tried Repair and everything known to man. Nothing works. So I have now installed a new clean hard drive and tried installing WinXP Pro on it and hopefully transferring the files to it from my old hard drive. Guess what? I cant get the O/S to install. It goes fine until Windows has to reboot then the black screen comes up and says to HIT enter to boot from CD. If I hit enter it starts to reinstall Windows from the start. If I dont hit enter it tells me there is a read error and Windows is not installed. I will add that all non-necessary hardware is unplugged.
Any idea how to over come this?

I'd send the other drive in ASAP for a free replacement...most drive warranties start at 2 years minimum and go up from there.good to hear! I echo Patio's advice regarding a free replacement.

Some HD's escape the factory with severe flaws- usually during the Quality Assurance break period, where they replace the skilled Quality assurance testers with a few monkeys with hammers. Not the brightest management decision. Then again, I'd be hard pressed to find a bright management decision at most companies .

I have the new SATA drive with WinXP O/S installed and working fine. So I HOOK the problematic drive (the original one with the original issue) to get the files from it. This drive is actually 2 SATA drives hooked in RAID. Now when I boot Windows loads the O/S from the proper drive and recognizes the two drives, which is good. However, it wont read them. I assume its because they are in RAID with no RAID drivers. Any idea how to get those drivers from my floppy diskette into my machine ? Or any ideas what else can be done?why do you have them in RAID?Do you know what the driver is and where it is installed?

What was I thinking? Anyway, everything is finally good. All my files are transferred and I am going to get rid of the RAID setup and make them two separate drives. The guy who built the computer set up the RAID for some reason and thats why they were in raid :/

Playing some DVD's will also take some effort in installing the PROPER tools as well.....Must be some day TODAY....Installed vlc , did't work with DVD.

Have vso convertxtodvd v2.2.2.256. Simple and easy no thrills program.
It recognises the new dvd+r/w, converts the avi file and writes to disk. But when l check the disk there's NOTHING on it! I then run the disk through actives cd/dvd eraser program which says the disk is not empty and when l attemp to erase it, it just keeps going on and on and has to be manually rejected.
I've also tried a newer version of VSO (v3.4.7.121) but the same THING happens.
I'm not sure where the problem lies, programs or disks, but somethings not right. Can't be all faulty disks (philips) surely?
Any ideas, are there better conversion/burning programs.

After inserting a couple of disks into the dvd player and nothing was being played, returned the disks to the pc, went into my computer, right clicked on drive icon, and selected explore. This works for all my disks, except recently.
At the MOMENT, l've deleted all references of VSO and reinstalled another version (v2.2.3). Am currently doing another burn to see if this works.
Will keep you posted, unless of course you come up with any ideas.

I have a HP/Compaq nx9030 laptop that am I trying to reload the operating system. I have formatted the hard DRIVE numerous times but when XP starts loading the setup files I get an error that says: File cannot load/copy. It usually starts with Kodak.dll then there are several more errors before it finishes with the setup. I have to hit the escape key to let it PROCEED to the next file and finish the setup. I even tried a quick format but to no avail.
If I let the install proceed I eventually get the BLUE screen of death before it finishes. Yes, I have tried several operating disk's and even changed the hard drive.Any ideas?
Note: This laptop had a nasty virus when I started.This actually sounds like it may be an issue with the optical drive itself...how old is this machine ? ?Its a 2002 laptopTry an external CD Drive.
Does the floppy work?
I used a CD to clean the drive and after a couple tries was able to load XP. I'm not sure that this is the BEST way to clean the drive but it did allow me to load the XP. Thanks for the suggestions.
Unfortunately a REPLACEMENT optical drive for that is probably worth more than the machine itself...

I was playing GTA4 and got pissed at the 16 fps, so I installed GTA VC. The mouse is really messed up. When I leave the settings at default, the mouse is too sensitive, but when I lower the sensitivity it only affects the X axis. They Y axis is still at the default RIDICULOUSLY high sensitivity. Google searches turn up a BUNCH of PEOPLE with the same problem, but there are no solutions anywhere. Apparently this affects Logitech mice, and it is solved for them by removing their DRIVER and using the GENERIC windows one. I have a microsoft mouse, and I removed the Intellipoint software for it but that didn't fix it.

A process error can mean the wrong method was used.

I am trying to compile an index for my collected travelogues. My intention is to have the Main Entry contain the NAME of a country and the Sub Entry contain a place in that country (eg England/Canterbury). From what I can determine it doesn't seem possible to SET a default Main Entry (eg England) and then mark sub-entries (eg Canterbury) so that each time I mark an entry it automatically becomes a sub-entry of the main entry. It seems to me (and I'm probably wrong) that compiling an index for a 124 page document will be very time consuming as I will have to manually enter the main entry and sub-entry each time I want an item to appear as a sub-entry of a main entry.

Does my post MAKE sense? A summary of what I want is:

MAIN ENTRY: England (default so I don't have to keep typing it in)
SUB-ENTRY: Canterbury (entered by Word when I mark it)

I compiled an index for another document some time ago in the same style but can't remember what I did.There should be an option to have a default entry in tghe main filed. Or some way to do an auto fill on a blank field.

Bu, If you can do that, you might consider using a keyboard MACRO thing.

You would set it up so that your main entries would be on keyboard shortcuts. Or even sub entries. This reduces the number of keystrokes you need, and cuts spelling errors.

It's minor, but still an issue.

I select the program to Remember my Username and Remember my Password. But then eventually the data will still erase. It's quite annoying

I've had a home network between my laptop and desktop computer that's been working just fine. Wednesday however I upgraded from IE 7 to IE 8. (It's possible that at about the same time I received an AUTOMATIC download from Window XP.) From that point on, whenever I try to ACCESS my network, I get a request for a password. Since no password was ever set up for the network, obviously I don't have one and can't access my other computer. At the same time this happened, the "shut down" box that I see when I go to shut down the system and the box the comes up when the system REBOOTS were changed. And rebooting the system now also requires a password, though simply CLICKING the "OK" box gets past that.

I don't have any viruses. I've uninstalled IE 8, and am now using FIREFOX. And when I try to set up the network again through the network Wizard, it won't allow me to do it. (It requires a CD to be made, which it won't make because it claims I don't have a removable drive, which of course I do, one that still works perfectly.) I'm clueless, a technical idiot and would appreciate any suggestions.

hi all...im trying to get photoshop to my new computer from my OLD one...i've copied the adobe folder from program files onto my external hard drive and transfered it to new computer....when i CLICK on the photoshop icon...it starts to load the program but says ...

"could not complete your request because of missing or invalid personalisation information"

You need to re install Photoshop from the install media (CD-ROM). You cannot move software like you tried to do.

I am stumped!

I bought MS Streets & Trips a few months ago from MS. They sent it to me in the little plastic case with the Key attached. It worked for a while, then when I did a clean install on my laptop, it would not reload. I tried it on my new built DESKTOP and it got the error 1305 reading from file.

I tried again a few days later and now it causes my machine to shut off and reboot. I can’t FIGURE out where to go. I have not found a friendly avenue from the MS support website.

What do you think?

Flash and Javascript is usually the required combination, you don't need Java to VIEW sites that require Flashplayer (Java is not the same thing as Javascript).

Download the Flash uninstaller and the latest version of Flash as standalone download. Close your browser (very important), run the uninstaller, then run the installer. You may need to reboot afterwards.

What i would recommend is the browser Opera it works really well on my 2000 and it does a lot of things that firefox wont do. And it works a lot better with the new flash.

I have an SLI arrangement with 2 GeForce 8800 GT cards.

Brightness is not an issue with normal computing. But when it comes to games like Fallout 3 and Defense Grid: The Awaking, the display is always quite dark. I've accessed the games' video options of course.

I have also accessed the nVidia Control Panel but to no avail.

I am RUNNING 1024x768 resolution with 100MHz refresh rate on a ViewSonic P225f monitor.

Now let's get more serious. I've also maxed the gamma.

Obviously there are dark areas in any game. But the darkness EXTENDS to 90% of the screen in Defense Grid to the point where you can't really see anything.

Did you recently update the driver? If so...did you have the same problem before you updated the driver?The driver was updated 3-4 months ago. I think it's current.

I did notice that on the Device Manager screen that the monitor was set to Default. I tried to install the Viewsonic drivers but that failed and I had to do it manually.

Interestingly when I rebooted the Device Manager now listed the Viewsonic and also a Default monitor. Previously it had listed 2 Default monitors. I deleted the Default monitor.

When I RAN Defense Grid the brightness was up a bit. At least I can see more. I have yet to try it with Fallout 3.

But why does the system keep putting up two monitors in the Device Manager? Is it because of two video cards?Onboard and separate card.There is no onboard video card, only the two I installed.

If there are two monitor listings to represent the two cards, then shouldn't both be Viewsonic or is it OK if only one is?

i often run video conversion software to CONVERT movies or tv shows to mp4 so i can wath on my ipod. i have over a period of time used several different programs, like videora, kongfusoft i think, 3gp, etc. i used to not have this problem, but: over the past month of two, whenever i run the program it frequently shuts the pc down entirely! then after i re-boot, if i run it again it generally runs WITHOUT the problem the second time. this happens with a bunch of different programs; i tried to switch the prog when the problem started and it kept happening so i switched a few times.

someone suggested that it might be some kind of virus, OR that i might have more than one program that is trying to use some resource at the same time. i have un-installed each prog as i used the next one, so don't know about that, but ANYTHING is possible i guess. anyone have any suggestions on how i could possibly figure out what about a video converter causes my pc to simply shut off in the middle (it doesn't shut down, it simply turns off, all of a sudden)? i dunno if there's some virus my software missed, or if the idea of resources being over-used is possible. any thoughts, by all means lemme know! since it didn't ALWAYS do this, something's changed, but i can't narrow it down to a specific time and date to tell what i might have added or something. MAYBE i haven't un-installed the other progs correctly...?

What PLAYER are you using ? ?I'm using media player 11. And to elaborate a little bit, we have movie maker 2.1 and vista uses 2.6. Theres no in between version, converter or update that I have located yet.

I'm trying to help a friend with her new system
She has a SATA internal DVD\cdrw BURNER
It plays DVDs and Cd's with no problems. The problem is Nero doesn't recognize the DVD burner at all. I've had her UNINSTALL her Nero as it was ver 5 and install version 6.3 but still not finding the burner. I've also had her try several other BURNING software and no help. I have done extensive research and everything keeps talking about a setting in bios to make the system think the DVD player is ide and not sata. Has anyone else had this problem and\or does anyone know how to fix this? Thank you in advance for the help.

When i burn a movie (avi file) it works just fine HOWEVER when i play the movie on my dvd player there is a timer running (clock). Is there anyway to prevent this from APPEARING? is this BURNED ALONG with the file or is it something to do with the player im using to watch the dvd?Did you do it this way?

I'm very new to HTML coding. I taught myself how to do things and have had some excellent results. However, when I use someone else's computer, things are too large to fit on their screen. For example, I programmed things on my screen, which is 22" wide and the other computer screen is only 17" wide. Is there any way I could check on the physical size of a screen when I PUT a cd or memory chip in and adjust things at that time. I hope I explained things right.

Can anyone suggest free software that I can use to record from my cassette deck to my PC which is simple.
I have tried AUDACITY but frankly I haven't a clue as to what the various adjustments are SUPPOSED to be for and also I keep getting messages that audacity has a problem and needs to close and then it does!!

I have tried "Spin it again" which is dead easy and happily recorded the first side of a cassette but the free version doesn't seem to permit creating a CD by adding the second side to the first - or if it does it is beyond me!

I just want software a mutt like me can use to copy an audio cassette to my PC and then record to a CD without the need for a sophisticated brain.

line in?Judging from what you said, you already know that your cassette outputs have to be physically connected to the Line In of your PC's audio card.

I would very highly recommend Audiograbber, the only freeware you'll ever need for this purpose. Use it to encode the music being output from your cassette deck to the PC.

Once you install this software from: http://www.audiograbber.com-us.net/ open the software and click on "MP3" after checking the box below it. Set the slider to the MP3 quality you want. It used to be that you had to explicitly place a Lame Encoder file in the directory, but I believe this is now automatically done during the installation (if you find that the higher bit rates are not showing up, drop me an email at: musicollector at gmail dot com)

Go to File | Line In Sampling.

Click on Mixer. Set your output volume such that the VU meter reads at the border or below the red section. Give it a name in the window.

Cue up the song, hit the Play button (the triangle). and start your music Your music will start encoding.

Once you complete this, install a very good software for burning CDs. I recommend CBurnerXP FOUND at:

Once installed, you can use it to burn the CD. I recommend using two separate software for encoding and burning.

No, STUDIO - Pinnacle Studio Ultimate 12.1

My preview is still pixilated and "blocky". But if I render "upcompressed frames", I get VERTICAL lines but everything else goes away. If I render DV, then I get some blurriness, but the lines go away.

I guess I can only have it one way or other other and not both. VideoGirl, I am COMING late to the party.I have read all the post and indeed there seems to be little that has not been suggested or tried.As i understand it the only commonalities to this ongoing issue is the monitor and the cables connecting it to the computer.Everything else has been changed.Therefore my suggestion is:given that you purchased a new version of Pinnacle (at the time of the new computer/graphics card purchase) i think it is time to recall Pinnacle and get them to step by step lead you through their software. If at all possible i would urge a telephone conversation as opposed to an e-mail route unless you have the patience of Job. However this still leaves me puzzled as to why 1. This "suddenly" occurred. 2.That you have problems with video that was created before the issue arose and was not a problem then but is now (Pinnacle should have no affect on that video now). The more i think of this the more it seems logical that it is the monitor somehow.Except that the "repair shop" monitors ALSO displayed the same result (whereas at that point the commonality was the computer).Ouch! Is there any difference in the video quality when it is played on one/any of your computer based software programs on the computer's monitor as opposed to burned to a disc and played on a remote optical DEVICE?Kudos foryour perseverance.truenorthTo anyone interested to know the solution to this problem, I still do not know. BUT the support at Gateway (which is rather good) sent me a driver to install. I did, and that helped a lot. Along with adjusting the settings on my graphics card, my video is now acceptable. I am currently working on my project, and will pursue other options at a later time. The video is still not perfect, but it will do for now.

In the meantime, if you come up with any genius ideas as to what could be causing the fuzziness/flickering still present, I am open to trying anything!
