Solve : Installing An OS?

Answer»

Hey all, I ran into a problem. I formatted a harddrive using GDisk which just wipes the entire harddrive. I previously had Linux 9.0 and Windows 2000 SERVER (Eval). I want to install W2k Pro but after the GDisk, the pc will not load any floppys or CD's. It will keep saying that no OS is found. But when I put the copy of XP home which came with my laptop, it went directly to setup. Anyone got any advice or tools? Thanks in advanceYou may need to use a Bootdisk. Obtain a Bootdisk at http://www.bootdisk.de.

Why not format again using the just the Format command? I donot think you require a tool to WIPE your hard drive unless you have had files installed you want no one to retrieve..I created a partition on the harddrive and also formatted. There were additional utilities on the disk to do that. But I still can;t get an OS to load on the disk, Same situation. I can't load w2k but I can load XP. I can not even get a dos prompt. Every boot / start / CREATION disk I inserted into the floppy, I get a non-system disk error. I put in a 98, 2000 boot up disks and also tried to install DOS but will not take it. If I can get a dos prompt things will be easier. The reason I did not format and fdisk is because the harddrive was used at school and we installed w2k server and linux on it. When I put the hard drive into this machine, linux would load and Windows would freeze so I just decided to clean it all up. does the MBR get installed by the OS or does it always have to be present on the harddrive?
You will have to set your Floppy Disk Drive as the first boot device in your BIOS.

Why can you not simply format your Hard Disk Drive? Why do you require the use of a tool?

As for your MBR question, this may provide you with the ANSWER you are looking for: MBR - Master Boot RecordI did set the Boot sequence to floppy first when I tried to boot from floppy and vice versa with CD. I am just going through the steps one more time to make sure. What format am I suppose to use if I can't even get a DOS prompt?http://www.windowsreinstall.com/install/win2k/installw2k/index.htmHave you tried different Bootdisks? Perhaps the one you are currently using is flawed.

Solve : Wow, what did I do and how do I undo??

Answer»

About six months ago I switched computers and OS from Windows XP [32 bit] to Windows 7 [64] bit. On the old machine I had several documents that were written and stored on Microsoft Works. I haven't had to use any of those files so I did not try to install Microsoft workson my new machine, until this morning. I needed to retrieve some of those old files so I dragged out the CD' for Microsoft Works and tried to install the word processor and the spreadsheet of MicosoftWorks into my new machine. It didn't take. What is worse, the Word and Excel programs that were in my machine from Office 2000 didn't work now either. . . . So I tried to use system restore and got the message that "System restore" did not restore successfully. So then I tried to undo the restore, got the same message. So then I tried to re-install Office 2000 but the installer will not work.. Now I am afraid to try anything. Does anyone have an idea what is going on?? How can I get out of this mess? Thanks ahead for reading and for any advice that you may haveSomewhat confused but let me see if i have it right.
1.2 computer involved. one XP the other win7.
2.Some data created on the "old " computer XP in MS works.
3. Tried to install MS works and Excel on Win 7 computer.
4.Have lost computer with Win 7 on it.
If you want to access the data on the "old" xp computer what is preventing you from doing so?
On the Win 7 computer can you access "safe mode" And when you try to boot the Win 7 machine what are the screen displays, beeps.lights, whatever? truenorthThanks for the comeback Truenorth.

All of my data was transfered to the new computer last Oct. Some of it was created by MS works but I didn't have need to access it so I did not try to install MS works on the new machine. Istead I installed MS Office 2000 and have been using that the last few months. After I had transfered all of the data from the old machine I cleared out the hard drive and got rid of it.

This morning I needed to access one of my old files on the new machine that was created on MS works but it wouldn't open because MS works was not installed... So I tried to install it using the old installation CD's that I had used to install it on the old machine. HOwever, it did not work. NOt sure why. Maybe the program was not compatible with Windows 7. I tried to activate the compatibility wizard with no success. HOwever, at that time, I discovered that Microsoft Word and Excell from Office 2000 were no longer working. Then I tried to use system restore to get back to when they were working and I got the message that "System Restore" was not successful.

The new machine seems to be working in all other aspects except when I tried to re-install MS Word and Excell, it freezes up. Doesnt go blue screen, it JUSTS sits and (who knows what?). I have considered trying a Windows 7 recover but I will loose a lot of programs if I do..

Thanks again for the comeback. Hope this INFO was helpful. JIMTruenorth... I didn't finish my response did I? The machine boots up fine. I can open any file on it except those using Word Or Excel. Haven't tried SAFE mode yet. I never know what to do with it when I do..I suggest installing CCleaner and running its scans, including the registry cleaner. This is a situation where a registry cleaner may help solve a problem and CCleaner is a very safe registry cleaner. I suggest getting the Slim version of CCleaner here: http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/builds. Once you run CCleaner's file cleaner and registry cleaner (these are two separate actions with CCleaner), try opening Word and Excel files. If they still will not work, uninstall Office, run CCleaner's two scans again, and then reinstall Office 2000.

If you have Service Packs installed in Office 2000 and want to get them back after reinstalling Office 2000, you'll need to reinstall them by downloading from Microsoft.

Regarding MS Works, what version do you have? I imagine it's older than version 8. If so, it's not compatible with Windows 7. See http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/windows-7/en-us/Search.aspx?l=en-us&type=Software&s=Microsoft%20Works

But, are you sure your old MS Works files can not be opened in Office 2000? I'm sure some versions of Excel can open files from some versions of MS Works. In fact, here's a reference on this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315757
Soybean: Thank you. I'll get right at it. Will let you know how it comes out. I have always been a little leery of CCleaner because it gets rid of so much stuff, most of which I know nothing about..... Thanks again JIMSOYBEAN: OK I tried using Ccleaner then uni-nstalled Office 2000 and re-installed it. Evrything seems to be working ok with a couple of anomalies. [ 1) While trying to install office 2000 Disk 1 the computer became inactive (hung up) at about 60% of the way thru the installation. After waiting about an hour, I used the Task Manager to "END the Task" the installation. At that point WORD started working but not EXCEL. So I tried to install Disk 2 of Office 2000 but it would not do it because "some other installation was in progress".. So I reset the machine and Disk 2 installed OKAY. 2) While EXCEL is working OKAY, when I try to use it it gives me the message: "One of your object libraries(stdole32.tlb) is missing or damaged. PLease run Setup to install it. At which point I tried to re-install Office 2000 and again it hung up at about 60%. If I double click OK on the message, EXCEL kicks in and seems to be working . What is object libraries(stdole32.tlb)? Getting back to part of your original objectives. Trying to access the data that you transferred from the XP computer to the Win 7 computer created in MS Works. Do you have "word pad" available from "accessories " in your programs? You should try that if you have it. Now as to the installation of the original programs that you had not and could not install (MS Works). Have you checked as to whether the version you have on disc is compatible with win 7 ? Have you checked to see if an upgrade (free/maybe not free) is available if it isn't? Is your installation of Office 2000 now working as it should (i,m unclear about where that is)? truenorthTRUENORTH: You are right. My MicrosoftWorks is vs 4 which is not compatible with Windows 7. I keep forgetting compatibility issues now. After I ran Ccleaner and re-installed Office 200 my WORD and EXCEL seem to be working with one small glitch. When I try to use EXCEL it gives the following message "One of your object libraries(stdole32.tlb) is missing or damaged." But if I click OK twice it opens up and works fine. How do you figure? ? ? ?

Anyway, I can live with it now. I have to find out what stdole32.tlb is and what to do aboout it. Thanks very much to you and to SOYBEAN for your help. You guys have pulled another fish out of my fire. I am most appreciative.. Have a good day and God Bless. ....JIMSounds good but to answer the question of your error message as to what it is and what you can do about it . Try this site (note the included supposed fix file in .zip) as part of the "solution. Thank you for the kind words and good luck, truenorth

Solve : DVD to Digital File Converter so I can watch my movies on portable device????

Answer»

I am looking for a FREE tool that will allow for me to copy movies that I own to an electronic format such as avi's or any other common video format so that i can play them on my sony PORTABLE walkman which has a screen to play podcasts and a wide variety of video formats that I can download to it. I havent been able to FIND a FREE version so i figured I would ask here to see if anyone knows of one? I tried using HANDBRAKE, but the video's converted are scrambled pixelated or jumpy with mis-timed audio and video. Maybe there is another that someone knows that works.

Was thinking the other day its too bad there isnt like an iMovie like iTunes that can convert your legally owned media to digital format for playback on portable devices. Would also be neat to have a play list to play movies at random as a portable HBO sort of on your device (given you have the storage capacity to hold multiple movies). It depends on what device you have.
You can search Google and find at least half a dozen free ones. Maybe more.
Here is a good one to try.

Solve : HELP PLZ LOST PAPER ON A FLOPPY?

Answer»

OK heres the DEAL i have been writing a paper for about a month now and have been saving to my floppy disk the whole time and then working off the floppy. When i go to get my papaer today it says that the disk is not formatted or may be formatted for a mac. WHAT?!! this does not make sense since i have already been using it for a month now. Can someone plz shed some light on this for me and plz tell me how to get my paper back. PS. i have tried this disk on 3 different computers all with windows xp and still the same formatt problem.Floppy disks go bad, just like hard drives. Could be the floppy drive is bad. Have you tried other diskettes in the floppy drive?

Alan <><

Q: Why save & work off the floppy disk only? Why not save to the hard drive 1st, then copy or "Save As" to a diskette? That way you have 2 locations for the data in CASE one takes a dump on you Try this: PC Inspector File Recovery but bear in mind that floppies are prone to failure and not a good medium for storing your only copy of something. What is the file format shown on the disk (right click and properties)?

Was this disk formatted in the machine you have been using it on?

Alas, floppy disks die, but I would be interested in the answers to these questions. This happens all the time at work, we get students coming in with exactly the same problem.

We usually use a very OLD laptop with Norton Disk Doctor on it but it can sometime fail and you will generally then lose the work. However if you can get your hands on a Windows 98 or 95 PC then you should be able to get your data of the disk.

Save it to that PC, and on another floppy disk, disgard your original as it is useless now. Then go buy yourself a USB flash drive. Put the floppy in an XP computer and save the file on that and the USB flash drive.

Solve : Tragic Data Loss?

Answer»

I work for a real estate company and we recently had some employees leave the company and take some of our database records with them, and delete ours.

Yes, I did make backups, but.... I stored them in a shared location on the company network (My Mistake), and one of our employees deleted them.

Does anyone know of an undelete utility for MS Acess Database (.mdb) records?

I have most of the records, but they deleted all of the new clients, the ones we don't have recorded elsewhere. You won't be able to roll back Access to an earlier version, but you may be able to recover the deleted files. If this is mission critical for you, you MUST IMMEDIATELY take the drive in question OFFLINE. I cannot emphasise this enough. Install PC Inspector File Recovery on another drive and then plug the offline drive in as a secondary drive. You can then run the file recovery program to recover *.mdb files on the secondary drive.

PLEASE consider porting your databases to SQL. MySQL is free and provides much more robust data storage.

PLEASE review your security procedures. It SHOULD NOT BE POSSIBLE for ANY EMPLOYEE to delete your mission-critical databases.

I know this is shutting the stable door after the horse is bolted, but hopefully you can learn from this painful experience and avoid future disasters.Thank you for the Idea, I will do my best for recovering my files. I realize what I did was a mistake. I have already taken the hard drive offline.

Thank you for your help.

Have a nice day.No problem; we'd be interested to know how you get on.

Good luck!Well... My BOSS said there was no chance in "heck" that he was going to fire me. He knew when I started that I wasn't someone with a lot of experience. I used the utility you recommended, only to find that the files were corrupted. I did however find some .ldb files that I will look into, maybe as proof of who stole our files to begin with.

I appreciate all of the help, and it is likely that I will use this site in the future. The ldb files would only give you locking information - i.e. who was using the database at the time it went walkies.

Can you cope without the data? If not, there are some other options, but they tend to be expensive. The data that was deleted was the data for new clients that haven't been put into houses yet. My Boss is very upset because we just spent about $5500 in advertising, and about 1/4 of the clients they stole were brought in by those advertisements.

How expensive are we talking. for the other options? You'd need to get a quote from a data recovery expert - and because they need physical access to the drive, you'd have to look for someone in your area, really.

Are you sure that the mdb files were corrupted? Did you have no hard copies of the data? No, I didn't have any hard copies of the data, I feel like an idiot. I will attempt to see if there are any data recovery experts in the area.

Thank you for all of your help.Hey, no problem. It happens to everyone once. You're only an idiot if you let it happen again. The PAIN will pass soon enough; then you've got another I.T. war story to tell over a beer.

I once had a server hard drive die on me (in fact I accidentally killed it). I had backups of everyone's work - EXCEPT for my boss's. Oops.

Solve : view folder names?

Answer»

Some of my folder names in certain files went away in the thumbnail mode. They show when I mouse-over, but not otherwise. In other files, the folder names have remained visable in the thumbnail mode. I have compared all the settings for those WORKING and non-working and they appear to be identical. I want my names visable again. They are all on my HD.

Example: I have a file named Graphics with individual folders in it for Angels, bears, cats, dogs, etc. These names (angels, bear, etc.) all show under the folders when I have the file open in thumbnail mode. I ALSO have a file named Webdogs with folders in it named Funny, Companion, etc. One day in this Webdog file all the names were just GONE from under them. I have to do a mouseover to read what it is when in the thumbnail mode.

As I said, I compared all the settings and can find no differences. HELP!! I have as many as 40 folders in some of these files and this can really slow down work.Perhaps selecting a smaller icon size will allow Windows to show the entire filename without you having to hover your mouse over them?I made new file folders with new names and copied and pasted the folders over from the old 'broke' ones. Took awhile as was over 20 gigs. Anyway, the folder names were restored and they are back to normal. That still does not explain why they went away in the first place.

If they vanish again I will try your SUGGESTION. Thanks.

What drives?? You need to worry more about the HD if you want to recover files/docs. Remove the HD from the laptop and use an EXTERNAL converter adaptor to attach to a working computer and copy there all files needed to retrieve.Quote from: jason2074 on January 18, 2011, 09:34:43 PM

How do you open the files and on what machine or method?ok, what's your os? for sure, most COMMERCIAL data recovery software can do this, only if your files couldn't be overwritten.
you know only the files in Data still exist there, it is possible for you to restore it
you may also find many and many recovery software from searching engine,
recuva is good, free one, but only for deletion recovery, so maybe data recovery wizard is good for your problems, EASY and stable one

Interesting posts from Fields Data Recovery (Aka Rapid Data, Dataphoenix) staff who are well known for posting fake reviews on behalf of their employers.

I have ample proof that they are doing this all over, Xom Reviews, FreeIndex, TrustLocal, Trustpilot, the problem is that they are getting away with it because as soon as the review site admins realise whats going on, they either request that their listing is removed, or it is removed by the admins.

But if you Google the company you will see floods of negative reviews, read these before you use this company.

If you are interested, please watch this video about the scams they perpetrate:

Solve : Is recovery disk enough to install OS on a new HD??

Answer»

Quote

I installed the new HD, the first thing that showed up after the gateway logo F2 bios MENU F10 Boot Menu screen was the PXE screen, Pre-boot Execution Environment. After it checked something it said it couldn't find the media and said to insert it into a boot drive FOLLOWED by a prompt to press any key. When any key was pressed it started over again searching for whatever. I can't seem to get past this screen.
If you can't go to BIOS set-up to change default settings from PXE media failure, remove the CMOS battery for a minute to reconfigure then reinsert it. Double check all connections RAM, cable, connectors are firmly SEATED to avoid certain failure. Then complete the installation suggestion if everything goes well.Quote from: BC_Programmer on February 28, 2011, 11:17:17 PM
You have to boot to the recovery disk. That is not happening. Double-check the Boot order.
Just to clarify - you have to do this in the biosSuccess!!!! (but for how long?) I'm still kinda weary though, I feel like the NEXT computer problem is right around the corner.

I tried a second time right after the first with the disk in the drive and it worked. I wish manufacturers would be a little more specific. This HD makes a lot less noise. The previous one SOUNDED as if it was going to take off.

Only two questions remain: What do I do with the old HD? Electronic recycling center?

And

What in the world am I going to do with 1000 Gigs? I don't think I could fill that from now until our next comp purchase.

Thanks for your help everyone.

Solve : Copying windows shortcuts?

Answer»

I need a clever copying software.
I need copy a special folder containing windows shorcuts to ANOTHER files or folders in my pc's.
So when the copying program scans this folders and find a .lnk file copy the corresponding real file or folder associated.

It's possible ? Do you know a software or script for this purpose ?

Best Regards

You realise those shortcuts will only work on the machine they're on....correct ? ?I am afraid i have not explained correctly. Excuse my english.

I try to explain better now :

I have a folder to copy to another folder (folder 1 to folder 2)
Folder 1 contains files shortcuts and folder shortcuts.
In the copy process i wish in folder 2 :
a) substitute any file shorcut for the file pointing to.
b) substitute (copy) any folder shorctut for the folder pointing to.

In other words : Folder 2 don't contains shortcuts.

For me is USEFUL too if I can copy the folder 1 in folder 2 and after select the shorcuts to transform in the files or folders they are pointing to.

I think this is a difficult program to make in the full version because may exists circular processes and scan a shortcut folder that may contains other shortcut folder or shortcut files . Or even a shortcut folder inside the original folder pointing exactly to that folder.....

I am not a programmer but in autohotkey or autoit language the only command seems to be : FileGetShortcut()

So the clever soft may need decide some things before make the copy from folder 1 to folder 2.

Suppose my second real case : I use an image inventory of all things of my house. First I photograph everything by room. Every room is a folder. Then I classify by themes : books, kitchen, textil, or even combined criterias. And use shortlinks to those images . The real things comes complex if I tell you that the photos are taken ordinarily by date and are saved in my imagen hard drive.

So :
I have my images in the O: disk of images
Folder for my rooms in the Y: data disk full of shortcuts pointing to the original images
Folder for my themes in the Y: data disk : books, videos, cd collection, wine bottles, etc full of shortcuts pointing to the original images.

Now I want to show my inventory system copying the inventory folder (containing the folder for my rooms, and the folder for my themes) to an EXTERNAL disk, usb pendrive, cd or dvd.

That is one of the reasons I would like to know a script to transform the windows shortcut in the file is pointing to.

P.D. And the miracle of the clever copy process would be that the program decides where put soft-links again. By example : put the original images in the rooms folders, and in the themes folders put shortcuts to the rooms folders.........
But I hope we can make simplier and in the easiest way.
A more simple script for me would be :

Once made the usual folder copy (folder 1 to folder 2) select the shortcuts in the folder 2 (one by one or better multi-selection) and then transform in the original ones.

I think you also asked this in other forum, which I answered with a link. Just in case you haven't visited that forum again, here is the link that you might find interesting: http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsxp.general/msg/f2e8cac8e7870625?pli=1

Solve : Wireless connection drops when opening DVD drive?

Answer»

I have been having an annoying problem on a computer I recently built. I USE a usb wireless n Linksys network adapter to connect on my network here at home. HOWEVER when I plug in another usb device into the tower or open the dvd drive the connection will drop and I have to reconnect to my wireless network. Any ideas on this? What you DISROBE has the symptoms of a power quality issue. Not to say the PSU does not have ENOUGH power. Instead, the poser is dirty or gets dirty when you use the DVD drive. First choice is to try another DVD drive. Or check out all the power connections. Or you motherboard may have some dry capacitors.(Electrolytic.)

Solve : Cannot instal lcopying software?

Answer»

This first happened after I formatted, I ATTEMPTED to Install Alcahol 120% but it kept crashing when trying to detect my CD PLAYER/Writer

Now I try to instal Nero, all goes well until I actually try to burn something. It will not even enter the menu.

I could not shut down either programs, I am forced to restart.

Someone told me I had to update my ASPI drivers, so I did. Didn't help.

Windows XP
1. CD-ROM Reader/Writer 48x12x48x (Trustlink)
1 52X Max CD-ROM Reader

ASPI drivers: (For what it's worth)

ASPI32.SYS 4.71.1
WOWPOST.EXE 4.6(1021)
WINASPI.DLL 4.6 (1021)
WNASPI32.DLL 4.71.1

According to the tool I used to view the ASPI driver versions before I INSTALLED them, they were non-existant.

What else can I do? I have very little knowledge concerning CD Writers. Barely use them.what software came with your cd/rw drive?sound like a software conflict/ nero alcohol. and other one ...like roxio in windows media player? did you unistall roxio?Alcahol 120% was installed very early on, it crashed when attempting to detect my CD-drives. I removed it, cleaned registry a few times in between, etc. Now I tried installing Nero (Did not come with my CD-writer) and it also crashes when attempting to enter the 'burn' menu.

However, these programs used to run fine before I formatted. The problem immediatly showed when I reinstalled Windows XP. I never bothered to look into it until now, now i have to use my CD-writer.Raptor - I had a problem with Nero & EasyCD on the same computer until I discovered this article on Nero's helpsite. Nero does not play nicely with other burning programs installed.

http://www.nero.com/en/helptool/170.htmI first installed Alcahol 120%, it kept crashing. uninstalled Alcahol 120% then proceeded to work without a CD-ROM Reader/Writer for quite a while and decided to install Nero. Same story. Keeps crashing when it
attempts to scan the CD-drives to see wheter they are there or to check wheter they contain a CD or not.

No other copying software has been installed when I tried both Alcahol 120% and Nero. It worked fine before I formatted, but one I reinstalled Windows XP the problem immediatly STARTED.Is the CD rom reading ok? Try updating the drivers for it. I don't like NERO, had problems with it not seeing my CD rom so I installed Roxio and it works great. What kind of drivers would I install for my CD-ROM drive? I updated my ASPI drivers.

Except for the fact that the CD-ROM Reader/Writer makes more noise than the CD-ROM Reader it can read CD's properly.

I find it strange that this problem immediatly started after I reinstalled Windows XP.

Solve : Alarm Clock?

Answer»

Does anyone know a program I can use for an alarm clock, that I can edit, ie. add the song to use etc. besides musicmatch jukebox?KirbyAlarm from the website is a decent cron application, freeware.Any other good ones, that I can use MP3's onWhy not use Kirby Alarm to call your media player to play the mp3?
http://www.kirbyalarm.com

Set up an alarm to run a program at the required time and pass the mp3 name to it on the command line.

For example..

  • To get winamp to play a playlist. eg "C:\Program Files\Winamp\Winamp.exe" "C:\my music\myplaylist.m3u"

To start the windows media player and get it to start playing a sound file.
    eg "C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe" c:\mysound.wma

To start the windows media player and get it to start playing a playlist..
    "C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe" /Playlist myplaylist

To start the windows media player and get it to start playing an audio cd
    "C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe" /Device:AudioCD
A real round-about way but SOUNDS good.http://www.dirfile.com/easy_mp3_alarm_clock.htmI use Kirby and it's pretty good. Merlin's post LOOKS promising and easy to set up/use too.Merlin, is there no am/pm on your's? Or can I just not find it?maybe its set to a twenty-four HOUR clock...like 07.00 is the morning time and 19.00 is the evening time... just like pc time?ok...

Hello Andrias, Totally unfamiliar with this package so I resorted to "The Pointdexter's Friend" Google, preliminary homework reveals it's ranking is equal to an abscessed molar, it is intended to run on a LAN, it is not clear whether or not it's dependent on a pre existing installation of "My SQL" or if the database engine is included in the package.

For install purposes apparently it is internet dependent, was not intended for distribution outside of Australia and apparently the only support available outside of Australia is via Email. Publishers site: http://www.ialda.com/

This just seems like a bad choice, especially if it is going to play a "Mission Critical" role in education. While chasing answers two possible alternative resources received accolades in free school management software.

http://www.thesuntech.com/SchoolImages/Setup.exe http://www.edvisions.com/custom/SplashPage.asp

Another resource I have had personal experience with is www.opensuse-education.org/ however this is not a Windows based system, in my estimation a good system however in general perception it is regarded with APPREHENSION
and considered as "too difficult" I have often found just the opposite to be the case. The interface is just as intuitive but different, there is a learning curve and some additional administrative effort is initially required.

The thing here is how vested your school's infrastructure is in Windows applications, why walk across the street for a fight when you can get to where you want to go staying on your side of the street.

Relax, take a seat with a pad and pen, define the parameters of what you requirements are, what you expect in a
management system and what your future needs may evolve to.

Technology has given us eons of collected wisdom with a click of a finger, the real challenges are learning what to do with it and determining the right questions to ask.

Well Andrias, wish we could have solved this quagmire in one stroke but now you've got a BIT of homework,
our community is here to help and support and were happy to, once you decide on a direction please feel free
to visit any time, your free to leave me a PM anytime, also when you do.. please tell us what version of Windows

Did this occur following a failed upgrade to windows 7 attempt? I have a sneaking suspicion there’s more to this story and the missing details are giong to be a major factor to it's successful resolution. If you would like to pursue this with us please supply the HARDWARE specs and the rest of the tale

Windows 7 has much more demanding hardware requirements than XP and the failure modes description falls within what one would expect if the hardware failed the minimum performance specs.

Below is the Microsoft help link RELATED to my suspicion, also Ubuntu's 32 bit download and Suse 11.3 32 bit download....
There both good solid ALTERNATIVE systems, both with about the same learning curve, a slightly different interface, their both full GUI and friendly. excellent documentation in both.....

You have a few decisions to MAKE, if your going to dual boot Windows first be sure to defrag before
installing the Linux distro of your choice, try the live CD's first, they will be slow off of the CD but when
installed will perform well, Good Luck

Solve : Bearshare and SP2?

Answer»

Has anyone ELSE had problems running BEARSHARE or kazaa, or any p2p networks for that matter with SP2, and is there a way to patch the problems, because I have heard that SP2 limits connections to open ports, or something like that, I forget exactly what. How about turning off the Firewall that is automatically turned on when installing SP2?

And get RID of the P2P programs, they are nothing but a hazard to your privacy/security.Kazaa = bad
Azerus = good

Go with the BIT torrent system of getting files. It's fast.Azerus?....I googled it and only came up with some band.....but bearshare has deicded to work...just not as fast as before...My bad.. Azureus. There are lots of bittorrent clients out there. I think Raptor USES BitTornado or something like that.

http://azureus.sourceforge.net/That's right, BitTornado.

I tried Azureus, didn't quite like it. I went back to Bit Tornado a few minutes later on.

Solve : Access webcam thru LAN?

Answer»

How can I access my webcam from a different computer than the one it's hooked up to, through my local AREA NETWORK? maybe there's a free program that let's me do this? thanx.I DONOT believe that would be possible. I know this may sound strange, but people tend to want to sit behind their webcam whilst operating it.

If you are looking into keeping your computer secure, you may wish to LOOK into other types of security? Two possible solutions:
1. Download and install VNC for windows
2. Get an IP camera and simply view it with your browser.I THINK you access the camera as if it was a shared scanner on the LAN, you have to have file and printer sharing up before you can do it. Check with the web cam maker's software package on this.

Solve : Could not format or delele files on my Usb stick?

Answer»

Hi ,

I have a Kingston USB stick, recently when i copied some files on it i breached up the process of copying files and it seems that "write protection" have been activated on it.

I TRIED to FORMAT it from Windows and also from DOS but it was not working the files from stick are still there, also i tried a special software for this called "JetFlash OnLineRecovery" but was UNABLE to see my usb stick...

I want to remove that "write protection" setting from my usb stick, and start use it normally like before.

Please if you have an idea about this give me a hand !

Thanks !
Which model? There is a tiny slide button on the case of the stick that turns on write protect. Thanks a lot for posting... It has 8 Giga , and its model is DataTraveler 101.

Thank you very much for posting.

HP Drive Key Boot Utility
Flash Memory ToolkitHi ,

Thanks for posting.

I tried both of this products , first of them did not worked on Windows 7 , and the second one , was unable to format the stick (also windows 7 was unable to format it), i believe now that it is burned, even if when i plugged it in usb , its name occurs in my computer place and its used memory space is DISPLAYED in a red progress bar.

All the best. Does Kingston have Lifetime Warranty in your country?Nope, only for 5 years.

Solve : looking software open to specify homepage on internet startup ??

Answer»

Hi..

I want open my homepage for every time i connected to internet via phone or broadband. My homepage will be display after users open the internet browser such as Internet Explorer, Mozilla, Netscape and etc.

As example, after i connected into internet and open the internet browser then my homepage (baharin.com) will be display on the first screen. The default homepage which set on the users computer will be continue later or else.

What kind of the software I can used or how could i do that ?

Thank you, Go to your Browsers Menu BAR, Tools, Internet Options(IE) or Options(Mozilla) and CHOOSE your preferred Homepage. Click Apply. I don't quite understand why you need a software to do this unless I am missing something.Hi..

Thanks for your reply.. it is not like that..

Actually, I want to setup a wireless on my cafe, so every time my customer connected to my wireless, my homepage will be display on internet browser from our customer computer as the first screen.. How could i do that ?..
Try this link --> http://www.hotspotsystem.com/en/hotspot/free_hotspot.htmlSounds like youre looking for a package to CIRCUMVENT the users selected home page and stuff your page in place of their choice. I'm not saying it's impossible but EVEN with a dedicated LAN server I think it a pretty ambitious task.

You'll have to disable their chosen browsers home page preference, this sounds like something your IP provider may be able to ASSIST with, but it's going to make your clients jump through a few hoops. Having them "Sign on to a LAN" (Local Area Network) and giving each one a unique ID before they can gain access to the internet.

Hmmm receipt# I see the wheels turning, stuff a fancy 404 page at them..your number please.. I like it,
could be an interesting project. Before getting carried away here definitely check with your IP provider there's
no use reinventing a wheel that might already be on the shelf...just my nickels worth. Please pardon my thinking
out loud here in the dialog box but now I understand..Thanks! I'm sure some other folks here will have some great input too now that the lights finally on. Good Luck.

Solve : Home Seach Assistent?

I have recently been having a lot of pop-ups on my computer even though I have a pop-up blocker. The only reason that i can come up for this problem is the programs "Home Search Assistent", "SearchExtender" and "Shopping Wizard" that were somehow installed on my computer. I can't uninstall SearchExtender and Shopping Wizard. When I click to remove them from the Add/Remove Programs window, they all come up with this:
Unable to open "http://looking-for.cc/uninstall/SearchExtender.html."
Unable to open "http://looking-for.cc/uninstall/ShoppingWizard.html."
Unable to open "http://looking-for.cc/uninstall/HomeShopping Assistent.html."
I have tried running Ad-aware, Spybot and McAfee Virus Scan but the programs are still there. Is there anyway to unistall these programs because they are not only CAUSING unwanted pop-ups but also causing my IE browser to crash?

Solve : I have created my site with:?

Answer»

Hello,

With Web Easy Pro:

Would you have a better tool to advise me

thank youYes. Many are better.
I will assume you are a novice. Please go to
http://www.mywot.com/
and read over the information there.

What does this have to do with Web Hosting? There are some very bad people out there that will rob you blind. Bad web site hosting is one of the scams they've used . No, they do not really commit a felony, but they go as far as they can ton rob you without you being able to get justice.

Using the WOT tool first, then search Google for 'best hosting for beginners' and the WOT will gibe you a red spot for the bad guys, green for the harmless.

Example:
http://top5hosts.ipage.com
Is OK. But there are a lot more that offer free site building tools. But I think you do not have to pay $5 a month. Look AROUND mad find it for $2 a month. And yes, they all have good free site building tools. Look for a feature called 'Fabtastico', a collection of ready made site tools. You might like to use free WordPress for a blog. Or SMF.

Greetings, carbone113.

If you HAPPEN to be interested in free hosting, check out www.doteasy.com. We've been using them for about 5 years now, with never a problem.

I'm a newbie on this site myself, welcome to the community, As far as web authoring packages my preference has been "Kompozer" it is a free open source utility that’s powerful and friendly ad available by download.
Kompozer is available for Windows, Mac and all distros of Linux, simply GOGGLE "Kompozer", I would also recomend goggle "The site wizard" he has many resources in addition to video tutorials as does you tube.

I believe you will be pleasantly surprised by how versatile and friendly Kompozer is,

Happy Authoring and Cheers!

Solve : VM Ware Player?

Answer»

Hi all. I got this problem wit the VM Player. I downloaded it and installed it on my laptop and when I open the Player it opens. That is not the problem. The problem is when I try to launch UBUNTU, it says guess operating system has disabled the CPU and the VM Player has to be suspended or powered off. Has anyone else every seen this? My specs are on an HP tx1210> 2 GB of Ram, dual core AMD's running at 1.9 GHz, Nvidia 6150 graphics chipset, and I'm running the 32 bit version of Windows 7 Ultimate. Is there any way to fix this?I have 2 ideas, I don't KNOW if either of them will be the answer.

This is 32 bit Ubuntu, right? If it's 64 bit Ubuntu, you can't have a 64 bit guest on a 32 bit host.

If you migrated an existing Ubuntu installation from another laptop or from a dual boot, then the problem MAY be if Speedstep was not disabled before migration (when the OS was copied into a VM). In this case, run Ubuntu natively and disable Speedstep, then migrate again.

http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=101

It a 32 bit version of Ubuntu. I'm not migrating anything. I think I figured it out but I don't know if it means anything. I got the Ubuntu iso from another website to be used to create a bootable Ubuntu flash drive. I don't know if that matters, but I will open the VM Player and just download a distro from the VM Ware site. Thanks anyway.

Solve : file extentions?

Answer»

does anyone know what the extension .SFV is on a file? i have a rom pack i downloaded for mame ending in that and i have no clue what it is.SFV stands for Simple File Verification.

Some of the downloaded files in the Net come bundled with a file that has an extension of .sfv -- this file is simply a verification file for the downloaded file itself.

SFV is basically a mathematical short checksum number based on the original file. When user downloads the original file and the .sfv file, user can USE dedicated SFV check programs that use the SFV data to check the status of the downloaded file. If the SFV's checksum data doesn't match to the data that the VALIDATION program gets from the downloaded file, it typically means that the downloaded file is not complete or that the downloaded file has been corrupted during the TRANSFER and needs to be downloaded again.makes sense. i was downloading a TWO part file that was 88 megs big. thanks for explaining that to me.

Solve : VB write not putting file to disk until app ends?

Answer»

I'm gonna apologize for terminology errors right now - I've been an RPG/COBOL programmer all my life. This is my 1st excursion into PC programming.

I'm on a project to get an electronic signature done on a Topaz Device up to the iSeries as a *PAGSEG. I've got all the pieces working and am now trying to incorporate a .bat file into my VB app instead of doing TWO separate remote calls from the iSeries to the PC. The VB app gets a signature from the Topaz device and writes it as a .tif file. It was created in Visual Basic 2008 Express. It's running on Windows XP. The .bat file converts the .tif file created by the VB app to the correct format and FTPs it to the iSeries. I put Shell("C:\batfile.bat") into my VB script after my WriteImageFile("C:\signature.tif") command. It works, but is always transferring the signature done on the prior execution of the VB app instead of the current execution of the VB app. It's behaving as though the .tif file isn't being put to DISK until the VB app ends. I know how to solve this on the iSeries so believe there must be some way to solve it on the PC. I'm hoping it's as simple as overriding some system value as the VB app runs. Can someone please offer a suggestion? Thanks everyone.Corry,
I have been a PL/1 programmer all my life and found the same type VB symptoms.
For example:
I found that if you want to Draw a Bitmap to a Picture Box and then do some "other" things after that, is seems to do the "other" things first, and finally Draws the Bitmap into the Picture Box.
I found also that VB seems to do the same for writing a Picture or Bitmap to an output file as the last THING.
VB will do things in the right order, but just seems to complete that Drawing or Writing as the final thing within a Do Loop or Function or Procedure.
You could monitor this behaviour by inserting Beeps and Debug.Writeline.

I have no suggestions how to solve that problem.
It is one of those things you have to get used to. This wound seem to be a problem of DELAYED execution. The programmer must insert some code that ensures that process B does not start until process A is done.
One method is to check for the pretense of and old object, delete it, the create a new object. Then verify the new object is present before going on to some thing else. Thanks Geek-9pm. I guess that means PCs don't have a "force write ratio" attirbute equivalent. Given that, what you suggest makes a lot of sense. Since my VB education and knowledge is limited can you give me an idea what the code would look like, or help me understand what to search for on the internet that would give me some kind of an example to play with?
Rather than to attempt doing the code for you I am giving you a link. In a simple case all you need to do is just give a close command for the flie. But real life is not always simple. You may be in a database environment where you have limited ability to close the file. Notice the problem these guys had. (Has some VB code.)
http://www.tek-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=1365082&page=10Your link gives me thoughts on other possible alternatives and things to research that might help. I think I need to read it again for it all to soak in. If my HEAD doesn't explode by Monday from all the extra PC stuff I'll let you know if I've been able to mkae it work and what I've done. Again - thanks a lot. :-)Yeah, if you are doing SQL or anything like that, it gets kinda heavy.

Western Digital
Not that it is necessarily going to solve the problem but try removing it and temporarily connecting it to ANOTHER computer. Configure the pins to reflect it being a "slave" if not already so. See if you can access it that way.You don't have to actually INSTALL it in a bay just connect the cables. truenorthdone connecting it to another computer same problemSorry we can not help you.
Could you please tell us how OLD the drive is and where you got it? And is the drive part of an external USB enclosure or is in an internal drive for a desktop?
We have noticed that some people are reporting problems with WD drives and just curious about your experience. The first thing to do is to check the disk for error. Run chkdsk.exe utility that comes with windows for a start. Open the command prompt (if you are running Vista or 7 with UAC enabled, open with "Run as administrator"), then execute: "chkdsk e:".

Although chkdsk might not be able to repair the problem, but from its report perhaps you will get a clue what the real problem is (e.g. bad sectors).Quote from: Luthfi on February 22, 2011, 07:00:39 AM

Running checkdisk without the repair SWITCH is useless. It serves absolutely no purpose.

The correct command is chkdsk e: /rQuote from: Allan on February 22, 2011, 07:15:15 AM

Correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't chkdsk stands for check disk which means its MAIN purpose is to check disk for possible errors? The repair option is added. That's why you have to specifically add the /r switch. So what is your ground stating that without /r chkdsk serves no purpose?I believe the answer is that, without /r, chkdsk merely provides a report but does not fix any errors. Still, some users may want to just run chkdsk to get the report first. Correct, running checkdisk with no repair switch does nothing to fix any problems it may find. It serves no useful purpose. If you want to fix potential problems you run it with a repair switch.Quote from: Allan on February 23, 2011, 06:16:20 AM

Respectfully disagree. You could say it makes no changes, but provides a report. However, it does have a purpose. Yes, running chkdsk without any witches is of limited use. This utility does work the head across the platter and the user may note sounds and activity that may or not be normal. That could be enough to find an error. So the error might even disappear after the head has worked across the surface of the disc. And that is not as rare as you might think. Drives are designed to behave that way.

Solve : thunderbird Email problems?

Answer»

Hi there,
I use an Acer desktop and Advent laptop with EXACTLY the same Email settings, and up until the time the hard disc was replaced in the desktop I had experienced no problems,
Since mydesktop was RETURNED to me I now find that I cannot send emails. I have contacted my ISP and they say all is fine at their end.I have TRIPLE checked all thunderbird settings and they are the same as the laptop. Receiving mail is fine, I can order items on the net. My O/S is windows 7 and I use Spyware DOCTOR with anti virus.
I keep on receiving the following Msg.
The Msg could not be sent using SMTP server relay.plus.net for an unknown reason. Please VERIFY that your SMTP server settings are correct and try again or contact your network administrator.

I would be very grateful for assistance,

Regards

Syd RowsonTools / Account Settings / Outgoing Server at the bottom....enter the proper SMTP settings...My SMTP settings are correct, like I said they are exactly the same as my laptop and I have no problem sending any email

Why not export your email account from your laptop and import it to Thunderbird on the desktop?

Solve : Google Earth alternative?????

Answer»

I do like Google earth with all its stuff.

But the images are REALLY very OLD. Some 3 - 5 ears old

So, Is there any alternate software like Google Earth that updates at lest once in a year?

Please suggest other alternatives also.I use Wikimedia.. it is similar to Google earth. You can check it out which may help you.I think I found it myself. It was NASA's Worldwind 1.4

Not much popular but very informative.
WORLDWIND 1.4
http://downloads.sourceforge.net/nasa-exp/World_Wind_1.4.0_Full.exeJust a note re Arjun Ar's suggestion. It may require an UPDATE of Directx to a current version and that is no small program. It is over 500 MB in size. truenorth
Edit: As an addendum to the above note. After installing directx at aprox.1.25 gb the Nasa program still COMES up with an error message re directx and will NOT run. All to be removed .

Solve : Automated Video Strobe Software needed for kiosk projection?

Answer»

I want a software (to make, buy or find) a software I can use in a nonprofit educational demo. It's a video special EFFECT, a way to make kids go "oh cool!" and little more. But, we have a budget

What we want is to set up a camera and projector in a hallway/passage. At REGULAR intervals, or when someone walks past a certain point, the camera will capture them walking, freeze framing about every 1/3 SECOND, and putting SILHOUETTES of that image on the screen. We want each image to stay there, basically CREATING a trail of "freeze frames"

Can anyone help? [contact info removed; that's not how we operate—CBMatt]. Thanks!

Solve : deleted soundmax?

Answer»

Okay, I was trying to clean up my computer by removing things that I didn't think I need. I deleted SoundMAX without knowing that when I did, I wouldn't be able to play music. I've been trying to download SoundMAX but there would always be a message saying that I was missing a component, what should I do?Fully remove all Soundmax related software. REINSTALL the drivers from the driver CD and then look for updates.

Or CONTACT Soundmax technical support if it still provides you with the same error. Tell them the exact name of your soundcard and tell them you wish to install drivers.

I take it Soundmax are the drivers for your soundcard, and not a program to play music?

I went to add/remove software and removed it. I don't know where the CD is so I can't do the first option.

Where do you find the name of the soundcard??

And yes it's not the program to play but is the driver.I'm really sorry if I'm confusing you, but I'm only 15 and trying yo fix it so my dad won't get mad.what operrating system are you having problems with...msinfo32 in the run box it will list all of the pc system...Windows XP I dont know what the msinfo isGo to Start -> Run and type MSINFO32

You can find the name of your soundcard by going to Device Manager and search for Audio & Game controller and then double click to expand the menu.

You can also open the case to see if there is a name printed on the soundcard.

I suggest you check with Windows Update to see if there are audio drivers listed with the driver section.Okay im on the msinfo thing there isnt a thing that says game and audio controller so i went to control PANEL and opened that and clicked sounds and audio devices now Im a bit lostI'm just going to give up and ASK my dad to get a computer guy to come and fix it or something. I'm too confused sorry for wasting your timeIt is a problem that can be easily solved once you have obtained the name.

Cheaper, too.try and use system restore...to get your sound driver back....or have a look by exploring the cd-install /RECOVERY disk for audio drivers or in the run box type this command dxdiag...
