I have never had a problem with MICROSOFT Word until now. I can use Word fine on my computer. In the past week or so, however, when I send Microsoft Word documents to people, sometimes they say they can open them and sometimes they say they can’t open them. It depends on the person.

On some of my e-mail clients (I have multiple e-mail accounts), I can open the files I send myself (i.e. I will send an e-mail to my multiple e-mail accounts and I will attach Word documents to that e-mail. On some clients I can open the files I send myself, and others I can’t...

I did a check disk /r (checkdisk repair) on March 9 and it fixed the problem. I could send Word documents and everyone could download them and I could send Word documents to myself and download them via AOL Mail, Yahoo, and everything. And then the problem came back again.

When I click on the file in the mail client that doesn’t read the documents correctly, the attachment comes up as saying that the mail client interprets the .doc file as being related to Notepad (specifically listing Notepad as the program it wants to open the file in), not Word. Then when I try to open it (either straight from the e-mail or after downloading the file back to my hard drive), it tries to open in word and gives me the converter message.

When it was working for a little while on March 9, the way I knew a Word document would work correctly even before trying to open a file is that AOL.com Mail would list it as being a Word document. Every time when I click on the attachment and see that it interprets it as a Notepad document, I know that it's not going to open:



Now, as I write this (the morning of March 10), Yahoo is doing the same notepad error. Lavabit and Gmail still open it as Word and it works fine. Yahoo wasn’t doing the notepad error yesterday, even when AOL Mail was. So, what I’m saying is, up until this point, AOL Mail was the only e-mail client that seemed to be giving me (I can’t speak for other people I’ve sent the documents to) a problem; now Yahoo is giving me the problem, too.

A family member bought their desktop computer together with mine at the same time from the same place, and they also have Word 2003 like I do, and never had a problem opening documents I sent them (and could open them yesterday when this was working again). When this is not working (now), this is what that family member sees when they try to open a Word document I send them.





Another person gets this message when they try to open the files in Word 2007:

Word experienced an error trying to open the file.Try these suggestions.*Check the file permission for the document or drive.*Make sure there is enough free memory and disc space.*Open the file with the text recovery converter. And on the same dialog box it has a BUTTON there for help

I was able to open all but the one at the end of the first line (test doc.etc). They seem to be word documents, Two I had to click run program, but then it came on the screen.

And yet for other people, the documents open perfectly fine, no problem.

One family member, when receiving documents I send them via e-mail, notices that the files don’t have Word icons, but when they try to open the files, they open fine as Word documents. They just look weird in the e-mail itself. This did not change even during the time when it was back working yesterday. Even then, they were still seeing these non descript icons:



This person until this started has never had these non descript icons appear when I would send them Word documents. They always used to look like regular Word documents in the e-mail itself.

I’ve probably done like 20 System Restore operations in the last few days trying to get it back to a working point, and nothing other than that chkdsk repair worked and now it’s back to giving me problems again.

I can’t reinstall office or Word because I don’t have the CD anymore.

I want to be very clear that this problem has only started recently, in about the last month (or perhaps even the last few days). Previously, nobody ever reported a problem opening documents I wrote. I can't figure out what has changed just recently that is making people now have problems with documents I make.

I saw this in the event viewer last night under Load Perf (which was listed in the Source column): "The performance counter name string value in the registry is incorrectly formatted. The bogus string is 2460, the bogus INDEX value is the first DWORD in Data section while the last valid index values are the second and third DWORD in Data section."

and

“Unloading the performance counter strings for service WmiApRpl (WmiApRpl) failed. The Error code is the first DWORD in Data section.”

I don’t know what that means.

Virus scan and Malwarebytes didn’t turn up any evidence of a problem relating to Word.

I have created a WinZip file at http://www.megaupload.com/?d=DB3TDOGW. It has some Microsoft Word documents from my computer. March 10, 2011 was made today and so was Documents to Upload. If anybody is willing, please download this and try yourself and see if the files work. I also included a sample Excel document and PDF document, as some people reported problems opening those when I sent them to them, though they’re no longer reporting problems with Excel or PDF. Maybe if you actually see files themselves from my computer, you can figure out what’s going on. I’m not sure; I’m not an expert at computers.

Everything else on my computer (Windows XP 2002) works fine. I just want it to go back to the way it was working about a month ago.

I’m in Philadelphia, PA, so if anyone who reads this is in that area and wants to take a look at it, let me know.

I’ve noticed that when I get the notepad error, that’s only in Firefox. I can e-mail myself the exact same file via Internet Explorer and it works.

And what does octet stream mean?

I run Windows Me. My hard drive does not power down
in the Power option. I tested it at several times (3 min-5 min etc) but the disk KEEPS running. I built the system myself. System works fine otherwise. Something MUST GAVE changed. It used to shut it down. Any ideas? THANKS!

Whenever I sync Ipod with Itunes, it renders the Ipod unusable, and then I am unable to to VIEW it as a device in Itunes. I've reinstalled the firmware onto the Ipod again several times with another computer, but every time I CONNECT it to the first computer and try to sync my music, it MESSES up the Ipod.

Can anyone HELP me please. I bought the above software with the intention of copying some of my VINYL collection onto CDs for easy use, storage etc. Can I get the thing to work? Can I blazes!

I copy the tracks to the hard drive saving them to the desk top. However everytime I try to play them BACK on the PC I get nothing but silence.

The progress bar moves as the track is playing however no sound.

When the track is playing on the TURNTABLE through the amp I usually always get sound through the PC speakers however when I try to play back, no sound.

Can anyone help please?

TommyWhat format are you saving the files in? and what player are you using to play the files? Have you checked the volume control settings in systray or Control Panel? When you are playing from the LP you will be using the 'line in' volume, playing the RECORDED track will be using the 'wav' volume - are you sure the latter isn't muted? Can you play normal Windows sounds?

We use Office Communicator here at work quite a bit and it's good but one thing I would LOVE to be able to set up is for it to pop to the top whenever I receive NEW communication from someone (whether it's a new conversation or just new text from an existing conversation). Since there are usually numerous items on my desktop, I often don't SEE the conversation window. There is an 'Always on Top' option, but don't want that - don't want to see it unless there is something to see. There is an option to 'play sounds', but I use a HEADSET plugged into my laptop for my softphone and I don't keep it on unless I'm actually on the phone, so normally won't hear the sounds. The ICON flashes on the task bar, but it's subtle enought that I don't see it unless I look for it.

I cannot find an option to do what I want, so seeing if anyone knows something I'm missing, or to see if there are any add-ons or fixes to do this.

I'm running Windows 7 with MS Office Communicator 7 Version 2.0.6362.137 - I think (seem to remember) that OC used to do something like this but it is not there in Windows 7 (if it was ever there).

As for the list.. I would only trust Svchost.exe. I have never seen the rest, but they could be related to programs you have INSTALLED. You failed to mention what programs are installed and could possibly run in the background.

I recently installed a 500 GB HDD to go along with a 250 GB that is running Win XP. I cloned XP to the 500GB drive and installed Ubuntu on that same drive. Both O/S's are running OK on the new drive but I'm concerned when I look at the PARTITIONS. I've attached a snap shot of of the current partitions. The first two Win partitions appear OK, but it's the other three that concern me. I allocated 6GB for the swap and 8O GB's(Ext4) for Ubuntu. Anyway,in total I should have approx.700 GB and what shows is less than 500 GB.

That would be the case. Windows doesn't natively understand most Linux file systems. There are a few third-party filesystem drivers but they seem to be for EXT3.

I have a 320 Gb external hard drive almost full of movies that I paid for/downloaded 2 years ago from a site that I won't mention (since I attempted to access that site a couples of days ago and got a message about that site seized by law enforcement). I have no interest in piracy ect. I just want to be able to save the files for future viewing. I don't need to transfer or burn to disc ect. I've got $, but not a lot.

MikeIt is not clear what you want. You have lots of movies already on a hard drive and you want to keep them. That should not be a problem. It becomes a problem if you distribute the IMMATERIAL in any way.
But why keep movies you have already seen?
You can get an account with Net Flicks and watch from a library of several thousand POPULAR movies. It appears to be legal. They openly advertise on TV here in the USA.

Merry Christmas I started to experience the same type of error message while running IE whenever I have 6-7 tabs (including Yahoo! mail) open in one EI window and one other particular site is runnig. That site features a Log-IN function, where I need to enter username and password. After I log in SUCCESSFULLY, there is a link which I need to click to display another PAGE for me to use for my work. I want for this page to be open in the same browser window next to the original log-in page. To do so, i usually hold down the Ctrl key and click on the link whereupon the NEEDED page opens in the next tab in the same IE window. All windows work fine for about 15-20 min but then DEbug Assertion Failed message COMES up...

When this error message appears the tab with site in question and Yahoo! mail tab are no longer responding when I click on them. Sometimes entire EI window with all 6-7 tabs freezes, regardless of what button I choose, Abort, Retry, or Cancel.

Since Win'95 days, I have been an Outlook Express e-mailer. Have no problems with it whatsoever. However, the inherited machine does not have Outlook Express. I'm under the ASSUMPTION that it could be easily downloaded from the internet. or purchased, but am wondering if there is advice out there as to whether I should just make use of the Outlook 2002 (10.2627.2625), or stick to the familiar. I recall, seems like years ago, that there were Outlook problems with the Microsoft empire. I'm presuming those are fixed now.

thetimothEither will work fine. You can get Outlook Express SP1 by download from the Microsoft site. It sounds like you have a copy of the other.Much as I hate to contradict my esteemed colleague, Outlook Express is rubbish. If you have full BLOWN Outlook, use that. If you don't, use Thunderbird (FREE).

If you have a Windows machine, you DO have Outlook Express. It's been with Internet Explorer up until the release of the latest version of Internet Explorer, version 7. It may not visible because it needs to be "installed". To "install" it, go to Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs, Add/Remove Windows Components, find Outlook Express, check the box for it, and proceed.

Having said that, this might be a good time, as Rob recommends, to switch to Outlook.Thanks. I'm planning on moving up to Outlook, I guess, based on what you've said. Which brings me to another question, possibly a stupid one:

How does one maintiain the address book and mail collection from OE when switching to Outlook? I'm sure it's simple. Possibly self-evident. But just in case it's more stupid not to ask, I'm asking.

Compaq Presario PC running Windows ME. Drive is Philips CDD4801 CD-R/RW. About a month ago, STARTED having a problem WHEREBY the drive can successfully read Audio CDs, but when a data CD is inserted, the PC hangs. Need to power cycle the PC to recover. I don't believe this is a hardware problem because the drive can read the audio CDs fine.Does it hang with any CD? If so, your CD ROM drive either NEEDS cleaning, or it has died. CDRW drives tend to have shorter lives than other drives and are very dirt-sensitive.Rob:

i am being urged by a professional computer expert to DOWNLOAD free versions of Regfix and C/Cleaner or other similar utilities to clean up the registry etc and wonder if anyone has experience of any of these and their uses and what result they found. they SEEM to claim abilities to REPAIR or fix many faults or computer crashes. thx in anticipation. walter.CCleaner is very good and is SAFE to use; I use it. You'll see it often mentioned in a positive light in this and other computing forums. I'm not familiar with Regfix. Ditto Soybean. I set up CCleaner on all my clients BOXES and for personal use I use Registry Mechanic.

You could TRY a data recovery service if you want to spend a LOT of money. Other than that I would consider it gone forever.

I WOULD like to place a ballot within a web page DESIGNED by Front Page 2000. It would be a yes or no question and voters would be able to see the result as soon as their vote is cast. I have just started USING the JOURNAL in Microsoft Outlook to keep track of things i do each day as i need to log what i do each day into our DATABASE. After a hectic day it can be HARD to remember what i did.

Outlook does a good JOB of tracking microsoft programs but i want to know if i can add in other non microsoft programs to track my activities.

Does anybody do this or know of any way to do this?

Yes, I have. Goes along fine until I get to the point where I am to click on the "Edit" button. I left click on the button and nothing happens. Nothing. However, I will TRY it again. Thanks. jb

Sounds like it's dead then. Have you tried it on a different machine?I Agree with that fact that it could be dead, but it is almost acting as if it was not mounted or DISMOUNTED properly from the systems USB port. If the system hasn't yet been rebooted, I would removethe pen drive and reboot the system, then after all services are up and RUNNING plug the pen drive in and SEE if you can access it now.

Also agree with trying it on another system, BUT Beware.... Viruses can travel on these pen drives and if your pen drive is infected you could spread the problem.

I have also SEEN where Windows 2000 Pro is buggy with some pen drives, especially if it is not SP4. And if Windows 98 or Me that opens another can of worms or problems with the pen drives from my experiences.

Using Vista Home Premium 32bit on a Dell. Shortly after a power outage we find a completely blank screen with a cursor at the top left. We do a control-alt-delete then at the dell screen tap on F12 then use the arrow keys to choose the working hard drive (which is the designated boot drive) hit enter and then choose "start win normally" and system loads properly and all is well till next time. AVG says we have no virus, and went BACK 2 wks for a system restore, also tried the last known good. Nothing has improved. Googled this and tried suggestions none of which has worked. Any ideas will be tried. Left on overnight almost every MORNING we are looking at a blank screen again.

Hello- I have an email account (that is about to be terminated) that I access via Microsoft Outlook Web Access (2003). I need to "forward" hundreds of messages from that account to a new account that I access via Microsoft Entourage (VERSION 10.0.0 for Mac)- all on a Mac PowerBook G4. The messages on Outlook are not saved on my computer- just on a server that I will soon lose access to.

I WOULD very much appreciate anyone's help! The "help desk" people at two different major UNIVERSITIES told me that I have to forward the messages one-by-one.... which could be fatal.... to me.

Being as you have not STATED which country you are in, i cannot check the forms, but i was always under the impression that downloaded forms were to print off, so that you can fill them in and post themTIFF files are image files. If you got a form in that format, to enter text and figures into the blanks you would need to use an image editor. Paint which is supplied with Windows has a text tool and can do this. But read the instructions on the form carefully because they may state that you must use a pen, and may even specify the colour of the ink.

I've created a single slide presentation on my MacBook to be used as a poster in Microsoft PowerPoint. I created several charts in Excel that I COPIED into the PowerPoint slide. The charts are bar graphs with the values represented. Every TIME I change the font size of the bar values to 24 font, the file changes them back to 10 point whenever I close it and REOPEN it. This happens to all the data values in the all the charts. The font on the x and y axis stays the same, 24 point, and does not SHIFT back to 10 point, nor do the font sizes in the rest of the slide change. I downloaded COMODO Free Firewall from their website today. During installation there was an option to download "GeekBuddy" which is supposed to be a program used for technical help, though it did mention something about speeding up my COMPUTER. After installing it, the Firewall program ran just fine for about 20 minutes with no sign of the GeekBuddy program running. Then a pop up in the bottom corner of the screen asked if I'd like to Optimize my OS. I clicked OK and it started doing whatever it is computer things do. When it finished, a log of "Cleaned" registry entries popped up. I thought nothing of it and closed it out.

Now the problems arise. I can't run many programs: If I try to it has an error message that reads "(file name) The pipe state is invalid." This message also appears upon attempting to install/uninstall anything. I cannot restore my computer to a previous date because all of my backup entries have mysteriously disappeared. Also, just after start up a massage appears telling me that “Host process for windows services stopped working and was closed.”

Please not that i cannot uninstall GeekBuddy, Or COMODO Firewall, or anything for that matter, backup, or restore, nor can I install any uninstallation programs. I also don't really want to mess with my registry unless whoever is instructing me knows EXACTLY what they are doing. I want to fix the problem, not make it worse.Never, NEVER use optimizers or registry utilities. NEVER.

See if that program has an undo function. If not, depending on your OS you can try a Repair Install or sfc /scannow

In the FUTURE you should use disk imaging software on a REGULAR basis. Create an image on a second hd on a weekly basis, keeping the 2 or 3 most recent images, and you'll always have a SAFE haven.I fixed the problem.
I simply wen to system restore on bootup. All my missing restore points magically reappeared, allowing me to restore to an earlier point. Also I discovered that if you VERY QUICKLY open task manager you can end the 2-3 processes associated with the program. Though that really didn't help the problem.

So, If anyone else is having this problem, just tap F8 on startup And you most likely will find the system repair tools nessecary to restore your system.

I've used Comodo for a good while now with no problems.

When downloaded, it installed geek buddy, i went to Comodos' site, read about it. Googled it, read some more, then come to the conclusion that i wouldn't use it and let it expire.

In November I purchased an ASUS U43Jc laptop at Bestbuy. I was given a free webware anti virus program from bestbuy, and relatively recently the file became corrupted.

When I run my computer not in safe mode it almost always HANGS after being on for a few minutes, but every now and then it runs FINE. I am unable to remove webware from my computer, but I have also not DETECTED any viruses through AVG.

I also cannot reformat because I neglected to backup my computer when I purchased it. Any advice on how to remove webware/get my computer to function on normal mode would be MUCH appreciated.

Sometime later,I downloaded The Sims 2 Body Shop. And all of the sudden that too went green.

It seems many Nvidia cards suffer from this problem, I believe its a driver issue.

Go to www.nvidia.com and download the latest version of their unified driver and install that. Note that you need to go to ADD/REMOVE Programs in Control Panel and uninstall the old driver if listed and then reboot before installing the new one.

If you have the latest driver ALREADY then you may want to try an older video driver such as the Detonator 44.XX series of driver.

You may also want to update your DirectX to 9.0b or c from Windows Update or Microsoft.com

dvds play correctly if i tell the dvd player to not use hardware acceleration, (use software) is there a syntax to add to the target to do the same? As to play in a window it is "-w" (without quotes) direct play is the dvd navigator in direct x 9 series. The game will not load if hardware acceleration is off, need it to ignore it, or something.


You can adjust the Hardware Acceleration of the card if you go to Control Panel -> Display -> Settings - > Advanced -> TroubleShoot. However this can have the adverse effect of slowing down your cards performance. While in the Settings, you may want to change/modify the 3D/overlay settings of the Nvidia Card.

Try completely uninstalling your Videocard drivers and The Sims 2. Then run a program such as Advanced System Optimizer V2 to remove unused registry entries. Once you have done that, you can reinstall The Sims 2 and your videocard drivers. Then see if that solves the problem. If that does not solve your problem, you can follow the same routine but this time also uninstall your videocard from the Device Manager.

Or contact Nvidia if you are certain this is occuring on more Nvidia videocards. (You may need to wait for them to release new drivers?)

ThanksSo, you've used Outlook Express as an intermediate step in transferring your messages from Eudora to Outlook, right? This seems to make sense, since OE has an option to import from "Eudora Pro or Light (through v3.0)", while Outlook does not have an option specifically for importing from Eudora. And, OE has an option to Export, which exports to Outlook or Microsoft Exchange. Or, you can open Outlook and Import from OE.

Did you view your messages in OE? Did they look OK there?
YES I viewed in OE & the message had changed into the format described above, so it seems the migration to OE is where the problem occursI found this reference, which looks very good: Outlook XP/2003 for Windows: Importing Eudora Email and Address Book. PERHAPS you should study it to see whether your procedure was the same as in the reference. Hello! My mouse has gone crazy since yesterday. For some reason the SCROLL increases/decreases the volume and doesnt work for scrolling pages down. Clicking it mutes the volume *censored*?! Oh and the forward/backward buttons dont work too, nor the zoom ones. The only ones that work are Left/Right button. I have a software for the mouse (Hama M1130) and its saying that all buttons should do their normal functions (you know, scroll - scroll, forward button - next page, zoom - zoom etc.). Thanks!I'm presuming that you mean the background in an image, not the picture on the DESKTOP, right?

There are masses of ways to do this - some of which, depending on what version of Photoshop you have, may or may not be possible. Some techniques are also better on certain situations than others.

If the background is predominantly in a single colour (a clear blue sky, for example), the Magic Wand tool is what you need. Just click on the background you want rid of, it will select everything of that colour - all you need to do is hit delete. You can adjust the tolerance of this tool to suit your needs: the higher it is, the larger the range of colours are selected.

There's also the quickmask tool hidden away. It's a little more complicated, but it's a lifesaver at times. Once this is selected, you just paint the areas you want selected in BLACK (it'll actually come up a transparent green or red) and then switch the quickmask off again. Anything you painted in black is selected and you just need to hit delete to get rid of it. Just paint in white to get rid of any areas you didn't mean to select.

There's also a range of selection tools, although getting accurate results this way is really quite hard. Remember to save the original FILE and do the editing on a copy.

If you need more info, have a look in the manual - you're looking for the stuff on selections.

I notice you need to add a background. To do this, you need to use anotheer lifesaving feature in Photoshop (and nearly all image EDITORS) - layers.

After you've selected the background you don't want and deleted it, you need to go into the Select Menu and go to "Invert Selection". You'll then need to go into the Layers menu and find an OPTION called (something like) "Promote to Layer".

This gives you two layers: the background and you're selection. After that, you need to go back into the layers menu and select "New Layer". You need to then put this layer below the layer you made earlier, and then paste in your backgroud pic.
