Solve : Power Point issues? |
Answer» I recently started working with Power Point and I have a few QUESTIONS regarding this program.
Thanks in advance.Bump.A bit silent, not many PP users I guess, must admit I tend to use just the default settings so never bothered messing around much with the rest. Anyway - I don't know about previous versions of PP, but for PP2003 you can use different language packs as set in Start/Programs/MicrosoftOffice/Office Tools/Language settings. This will apply to all Office programs. Not too sure what you mean by Dia, so can't help there. Size of 'paper' is set the same way as other Office programs - File/Page setup - measured in cm Hope this is what you mean. RegardsMuch obliged, Tallyman. I am not quite certain how I would translate 'Dia'. I am talking about the pages you create with Power Point. In Dutch they are called 'Dia's'. I have GOT another question about the Spell check option, it seems to check only for English spelling errors even though, after following your instructions, the Dutch language pack is installed. To insert a new slide (Dia), press ctr+m or click on the insert menu, then click new slide Click tools, language and select the language you want. Power Point will use the dictionary of all languages selcted if they are available Quote To insert a new slide (Dia), press ctr+m or click on the insert menu, then click new slide I would like to insert a slide I created earlier on but is stored as an individual file. I fixed the spelling issue, thanks, I had to set Dutch to the default language.Don't know if this will be much help, but in PP2003 you can choose 'insert/slides from files' which lets you choose to add existing presentations as part of a new presentation. No idea in which version this was first available.Once again, very much obliged, Tallyman. That was the option I was looking for. |

Solve : Microsoft Word 2003 nightmare? |
Answer» I have never had a problem with MICROSOFT Word until now. I can use Word fine on my computer. In the past week or so, however, when I send Microsoft Word documents to people, sometimes they say they can open them and sometimes they say they can’t open them. It depends on the person. They all opened fine for me. Thanks for letting me know. They had normal icons, too? Thanks.I was going to take a look at the files but I can't figure out how to download from http://www.megaupload.com/?d=DB3TDOGW Quote from: soybean on March 10, 2011, 11:12:35 AM I was going to take a look at the files but I can't figure out how to download from http://www.megaupload.com/?d=DB3TDOGW Hi soybean, thanks for your reply and willingness to help me out. When you click on that link. In the bottom right corner, it will say "Please wait [number] seconds." After about 40 seconds, a link that says "Download" will appear. Click that button when it comes up, and it will download the file.Quote from: Loochery on March 10, 2011, 11:00:42 AM Thanks for letting me know. They had normal icons, too? I opened all files on my laptop using Office 2007. They all appeared normal. The icons associated with the files were all correct, just as Salmon Trout posted.I am afraid that I think there is a hardware problem - RAM or hard drive I suspect. Follow-up: I compared the source message source (with all the HTML, etc.) of an e-mail where the Word document worked and an e-mail where the Word document didn't work? I looked through all the HTML and everything and it was pretty much all the same. The only thing that was different was that the e-mail where the document did work said Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="eleven o 9.doc" Content-Type: application/msword; name="eleven o 9.doc" and the e-mail where the document didn't work said Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="hi.doc" Content-Type: text/plain; name="hi.doc" So, the difference seems to be that in one e-mail, the file is being interpreted as application/msword, and in the other it is being interpreted as text/plain. So, if anyone knows how to make it so that it is always interpreted as application/msword, that's what I need.one solution would be to not use webmail for attaching binary file types like word documents. Some of them might have an option to at least transfer as a standard octet stream. Either way, the reason some people get different results is because some E-mail clients will use the MIME type (the Application/msword Content-Type) to determine which application to open it with; if it is application/msword, then those mail clients will either find word installed and associated with that mine type, or fallback to simply using a standard content type (notepad) if it's assigned text/plain, then those e-mail clients will default it as a notepad document. Another set of E-mail clients probably do neither, and merely download the file and execute it and let the system figure it out. (via filename associations). Thing is, when attaching, it's up to the mail client to decide what the Mime type is. Some of them recognize word documents, some don't. but either way downloading a word document as plain text will corrupt the file. Short story: This isn't a problem with word, or any copy of word on anybody's PC (except the one who doesn't get any icons at all, that might be an issue on their end) but rather with the various mail clients. Thus, the problems with other file types. I'm kind of under the same impression. I’ve noticed that when I get the notepad error, that’s only in Firefox. I can e-mail myself the exact same file via Internet Explorer and it works. Also, the first time I ever saw the phrase "octet stream" was about five minutes ago. I sent a file from Internet Explorer and it read it as a Word doc. Then a minute later I e-mailed the same file in Internet Explorer and it read it as application/octet stream (it still opened in Word). Here's a photoshopped image. I just cut the three attachments from each of the three e-mails and pasted them into the same image: Lavabit read the file the first time (When I sent it from Firefox) as a text/plain file (see the first image). Then I e-mailed the same file from Internet Explorer and it read it as a application/msword (the second image). Then I sent it again a minute later from Internet Explorer and it read it as a application/octet stream. The last two (When sent from IE), it opened in Word (both when I tried to open it from Firefox and from Internet Explorer). Why when sent from Internet Explorer would it send as a word file one minute from IE and as an application/octet steram the next minute when also sent from Internet Explorer? And what does octet stream mean? It's such a crazy coincidence that as far as I know, I read that phrase for the first time a few minutes ago and then you just happened to mention it. Thanks again for your insight. I sincerely appreciate it.Quote from: Loochery on March 10, 2011, 10:56:17 PM I’ve noticed that when I get the notepad error, that’s only in Firefox. I can e-mail myself the exact same file via Internet Explorer and it works. Here is a point of confusion; really, you are e-mailing with the web-mail interface of some service; for example, Hotmail, or AOL mail, etc. This means that when you attach a file it has to go through the browser (which may decide to upload it in some specific fashion) to the webmail interface (which may have been told by the browser that the file is something (such as text) that it isn't, depending on browser settings- for firefox you can manage the defined applications (which contribute to the various Application/ entries FF can understand) in Tools->Options, in the "Applications" area.). This on top of the fact that the webmail service may also interpret the file to try to determine if it understands the type. Obviously, the ideal circumstance is that nothing in the line understands what it is, and it is given the type Application/Octet-stream, or, something understands it and it gets the appropriate Mime type (application/msword for word, application/pdf for pdf files, etc. At some point in the line something it is recognizing the word document properly as a text file; my first guess would be firefox's "Applications" area has been corrupted or inadvertently changed during usage, and Firefox has been "told" that .doc files are all plain text documents; so it uploads them as such, and the webmail service in question thinks "oh good, the browser already knows the type, no need to investigate it myself" and gives it that same type. Of course downloading a binary file format such as a word document as a text file means that large quantities of the file will be lost and so trying to open it in word afterwards will confuse the poor thing. (thus the various dialogs, depending on the file; sometimes enough of the file remains intact for word to see that it's probably a word document, but it airs on the side of caution and tries to use the old Word 6 converter (which you, or whomever took the screenshot, didn't have installed... although it wouldn't have worked anyways.) or it falls back to the worst case scenario and assumes it's a text file that you want to import. Quote And what does octet stream mean?a stream of bytes. (a byte is 8 bytes, thus a byte is an "octet" of bits). No idea why it would show it differently, but Application/msword pretty much just means octet stream (but with a bit more info that it's a word document) anyways. Application/msword isn't a "standard" mime type, to my understanding, but Application/octet-stream is. |

Solve : Office Communicator - Have Conversation window jump to top when receive new? |
Answer» We use Office Communicator here at work quite a bit and it's good but one thing I would LOVE to be able to set up is for it to pop to the top whenever I receive NEW communication from someone (whether it's a new conversation or just new text from an existing conversation). Since there are usually numerous items on my desktop, I often don't SEE the conversation window. There is an 'Always on Top' option, but don't want that - don't want to see it unless there is something to see. There is an option to 'play sounds', but I use a HEADSET plugged into my laptop for my softphone and I don't keep it on unless I'm actually on the phone, so normally won't hear the sounds. The ICON flashes on the task bar, but it's subtle enought that I don't see it unless I look for it. |

Solve : Partition concern? |
Answer» I recently installed a 500 GB HDD to go along with a 250 GB that is running Win XP. I cloned XP to the 500GB drive and installed Ubuntu on that same drive. Both O/S's are running OK on the new drive but I'm concerned when I look at the PARTITIONS. I've attached a snap shot of of the current partitions. The first two Win partitions appear OK, but it's the other three that concern me. I allocated 6GB for the swap and 8O GB's(Ext4) for Ubuntu. Anyway,in total I should have approx.700 GB and what shows is less than 500 GB. It is OK.That would be nice. If possible I'd like to know where the 200 GB went Also now when "Disk Imaging" this drive, is what I'm presently seeing, what I'll get? Thanks, Geek. overthehillQuote ... would be nice. If possible I'd like to know where the 200 GB wentRather tan give you the right answer - Pick from the following: 1> You will get the 200 MB back after you fill your tax return 2> The 200 MB loos is from IEEE definition. 3> The vendor gave you such a good deal he kept 200 NB. 4> Some space is lost in hole in the middle of the disk. Give up? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gigabyte There will be a pop quiz tomorrow... Quote from: Geek-9pm on March 09, 2011, 08:03:26 PM Rather tan give you the right answer - Before I can take your quiz, lets try this again. This is taken from your link. This means that a 300 GB (279 GB) hard disk is indicated only as 279 GB. As storage sizes increase and larger units are used, this difference becomes even more. So now. If 300GB is actually in reality 279GB. How can 500GB result in 232.87 GB?. I realize that the bigger the drive the more that is lost (as above). But consider this, if you look at my png.file, my 250GB drive totals to 232.89GB ,fair enough. But for my 500 GB to only realize 232.87 GB (this is less than the 250 GB drive), something is just not right. If it is ,according to this logic , remind me not to buy a 2TB HDD. Be lucky to end up with a 100GB. overthehill Consider: Code: [Select]1024 ^3 = 1073741824 1000 ^3 = 1000000000 -------- 73741824 This means for every GB you lack about 74 MB Wait! That can't be right! HELP! We need help here! Who has a calculator!Quote from: overthehill on March 09, 2011, 08:47:01 PM So now. If 300GB is actually in reality 279GB. How can 500GB result in 232.87 GB?.It doesn't. Looking at the image I see one 500GB drive being listed as 5.59GB+74.50GB+152.78GB+230.42GB+2.46 =465.75GB. There is only one physical Hard disk drive being detected and shown by disk management. the 250GB drive is not there. the near 250GB partition is the result of you cloning the 250GB to this 500GB. No idea what you did with it after. Either you removed it (in which case you are silly for thinking that you can remove it and still use it) or you didn't swap about the new drive with the old properly. Connect the 250GB as a slave drive. It will still have the same data as before. You can wipe it however since it is now cloned to the new drive. Quote But consider this, if you look at my png.file, my 250GB drive totals to 232.89GBNo. Your 250GB drive is not even in disk management. only the 500GB is. each physical drive is shown as a separate item. (Disk 0, Disk 1 in my case for my two physical internal hard drives). You only have one. the 232.89GB partition (NOT drive) is the result of when you cloned XP from the 250GB. Wither the 250GB is I don't know. As I noted you may have removed it for whatever reason, or it could simply be connected improperly (I'd bank on the latter). Quote But for my 500 GB to only realize 232.87 GB (this is less than the 250 GB drive)All of the listed partitions reside on the 500GB drive, a total of 465.75GB. No 250GB drive is in the disk management image; there is a 232.87GB partition on the 500GB drive, but that doesn't magically give you extra disk space, nor does it have anything to do with the 250GB; which doesn't even show up in the upper list so is not being detected by the computer/Windows to begin with. Thanks once again BC_. Sure glad you CAME along. That makes perfect sense. I'll blame it on a "seniors moment" when I posted this. Yes, there's no way that I can have my cake and eat it too. With the 250GB disconnected ,how could I have possibly expected to see it in "Disk Management". I GUESS what threw me is; when I look at "My Computer"(photo attached) is appears almost exactly as it did before I did all this magic. While I got your attention, is the reason that I don't see the EXT4 partition because I'm looking at it from Windows?. overthehill [recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]Quote from: overthehill on March 09, 2011, 09:41:47 PM While I got your attention, is the reason that I don't see the EXT4 partition because I'm looking at it from Windows?. overthehill That would be the case. Windows doesn't natively UNDERSTAND most Linux file systems. There are a few third-party FILESYSTEM drivers but they seem to be for EXT3. there are separate applications you can use to read EXT4 from windows if you really need to, though: http://www.soluvas.com/read-browse-explore-open-ext2-ext3-ext4-partition-filesystem-from-windows-7/Quote from: BC_Programmer on March 09, 2011, 10:03:32 PM That would be the case. Solve : reputable site to download movies to HD, (legally-paid only) & best price?? |
Answer» I hope this thread is in the right forum. I have a 320 Gb external hard drive almost full of movies that I paid for/downloaded 2 years ago from a site that I won't mention (since I attempted to access that site a couples of days ago and got a message about that site seized by law enforcement). I have no interest in piracy ect. I just want to be able to save the files for future viewing. I don't need to transfer or burn to disc ect. I've got $, but not a lot. It is not clear what you want.I want more movies on my 320 Gb external hard drive, downloaded from a legitimate movie download source, and after the 320 is full I want to start filling up other Hd's I have, and on, and on. Bless the fine work of the hard drive guru's for the ability to store unlimited amounts of data. . Quote You have lots of movies already on a hard drive and you want to keep them.Correct. Quote It becomes a problem if you distribute the immaterial in any way. That's not the issue here. I have no intentions of distribution other than a few family members, and/or some friends viewing these movies at my house. I'm aware of the policy concerning non legal/--- information on this forum. I've been here since 2006 and caused some headaches, but non due to any illegal, shady, piracy ect. Quote But why keep movies you have already seen? Because I like to see movies i like more than once, or twice, or three times - heck, 13 times for "a particular John Grisham flick" and more times than that for.... Quote You can get an account with Net Flicks and watch from a library of several thousand popular movies. It appears to be legal. They openly advertise on TV here in the USA.I'm aware of Netflix. I researched their site, contacted online customer service and talked to Support live via 1--866.... INetI tried to create an account with Netflix but they don't accept prepaid debit cards so I have an account on Hippo-movies.com So far I've downloaded several movies with no problem other than slow download speed (usually ~100-400 KB/sec)(My connection speed is 100Mb/sec). Some movies give download options of iPod, DiVX, DVD, 720P HD, or 1080P HD, but most have LIMITS on these options. I guess I'm happy with it though. Selection is pretty good: "Hippo Storage" = * Movies: 7648 * HD Movies: 2332 * HD Online: 1772 * Storage: 36366 GB thanks Geek-9pm. I've run into a problem 3 times now when downloading movies. The download stalls. And if I try closing the download window, it won't close and other open windows ALSO will not respond. The computer will not restart either. Everything becomes unresponsive. I have to disconnect the power supply cord and remove the battery in order to restart. What's going on here? Not sure. There has been speculation about - Internet Service Providers limiting large high speed downloads (Google that) Quote It shows how to battle ISP's throttling bittorrent speed, optimize download ... And MSN is not designed for SENDING such large files - just imagine if the file ... It can do wonders on torrents with high seeds and can give high speeds .... However, if you need to limit your download speeds, right-click the utorrent ...(Found in a Google search) ISP limits may exist, but even if so, I would not think this would create a situation where my entire PC becomes unresponsive? And my ISP is cable 100Mb/s. As I posted earlier - why is download speed only "~100-400 KB/sec"? When the download finally stalls, the last download speed displayed is less than 50Kb/s. |

Solve : Drive can read audio CD, but not CD-ROM? |
Answer» Compaq Presario PC running Windows ME. Drive is Philips CDD4801 CD-R/RW. About a month ago, STARTED having a problem WHEREBY the drive can successfully read Audio CDs, but when a data CD is inserted, the PC hangs. Need to power cycle the PC to recover. I don't believe this is a hardware problem because the drive can read the audio CDs fine.Does it hang with any CD? If so, your CD ROM drive either NEEDS cleaning, or it has died. CDRW drives tend to have shorter lives than other drives and are very dirt-sensitive.Rob: |

Solve : Am I being hacked or something?? |
Answer» Hi Guys, I'm back again... So I have two issues. One is: I get emails with my son's email address but it's just a link. Now he may be using a phone to send them. The thing is, I never open any of them because, well, I just don't open suspicious mail, not even from my two men. But tonight I DELETED four of these emails and when I checked my deleted box. only one of the pieces of mail was there. The one piece I KNOW my son sent. Am I being HACKED or something? Issue two: I think I need to upgrade from IE7 to at least IE8, the thing is, you all know how squimish I am about downloading things. So, if I click on the download button for IE8, will I have to do anything else, or should I get a Microsoft TECH to help me? Oh, I never tried again to do the HJT so that you guys could look at my programs and stuff. Thanks Guys. Thanks guys. Thanks for redirecting the topic Allan. I'm trying to think if I left out any info. I also had a couple of emails from my other son who denies sending me the same type of email. Just a link. My sons usually greet me and stuff, and so this type of mail with their address sent up flags. Is someone reading my outgoing mail, then using the addresses to damage my girl here.? About Twitter... they are always doing something in there. Right now they have what's called THE NEW TWITTER. So I click it to be in the new Twitter, but when I leave Twitter, the next time I go there I'm right back in the old Twitter. They post help info about upgrading your browser if you have certain problems. So, I'm trying to do that. But I don't want the hassle of download problems. What's with the bold type? Tell your son to change his password and security question. This should stop whoever is using his email. The link probably directs you to some kind of advertising or spyware. |

Solve : Outlook 2000 link failure? |
Answer» Be gentle, this is my first time. I am running Windows 2000, with IE, Office 2000, and Outlook 2000. None of the links in my incoming emails work! The links have WORKED perfectly for years but, for the past two months, they no longer take me to the url of the link's address. Makes no difference if it is an http: address or an imbedded address of a picture or statement. The http address changes colors when I left click on it but nothing happens. Well, sometimes "my documents" box appears. I think that it is looking for a browser when that happens but, I could be wrong. Mouse works fine elsewhere. Work around is to copy and paste in the browser address box but that is a pain and doesn't work with pictures/statements. And, most importantly, I cannot click on the addresses to stop spam emails. Bummer. Have tried to INSTALL OE per the instructions in another thread but, I think, it is not there. The byte size of OE is shown as 0.0! I have tried to install it twice and nothing NEW is in the "Program" list when I finish. I USED OE for several years before installing Outlook two years ago and had both until about eight months ago. OE and all of the saved emails just disappeared. Hope that this is enough explanation and you can help. jb |

Solve : Blank screen w/cursor? |
Answer» Using Vista Home Premium 32bit on a Dell. Shortly after a power outage we find a completely blank screen with a cursor at the top left. We do a control-alt-delete then at the dell screen tap on F12 then use the arrow keys to choose the working hard drive (which is the designated boot drive) hit enter and then choose "start win normally" and system loads properly and all is well till next time. AVG says we have no virus, and went BACK 2 wks for a system restore, also tried the last known good. Nothing has improved. Googled this and tried suggestions none of which has worked. Any ideas will be tried. Left on overnight almost every MORNING we are looking at a blank screen again. Left on overnight almost every morning we are looking at a blank screen againYou may be using a power saving option or using EITHER hibernate or sleep mode... Jason...Thanks for the tip, will give it a try. R CReset those, did not MAKE a differance when changed. Also tried to reset the boot sequence on startup and the screen shows that it is in the first position in the LIST. But when I try to reboot screen now says cannot boot from floppy. When you say, reset those, did you set all the power saving and hibernate options to none? |

Solve : forwarding from OE Web Access to Entourage? |

Answer» Hello- I have an email account (that is about to be terminated) that I access via Microsoft Outlook Web Access (2003). I need to "forward" hundreds of messages from that account to a new account that I access via Microsoft Entourage (VERSION 10.0.0 for Mac)- all on a Mac PowerBook G4. The messages on Outlook are not saved on my computer- just on a server that I will soon lose access to. Unfortunately, I cannot connect to to the old account via EntourageCan you connect to the new account with Outlook? |

Solve : I know Tiff formats can made editable online but I don’t know how?? |
Answer» Hi, I have downloaded Tax forms from a site but they are in tiff format and I need to make some changes and enter new numbers in these forms, they are not allowing me to do anything because tiff format. I know Tiff formats can made editable online but I don’t know how, I am SURE in this platform some one would read about my faux pas and respond by pointing me in right direction. Thanks in advance. But read the instructions on the form carefully because they may state that you must use a pen, and may even specify the colour of the ink. Yes, i went to the UK tax site and there was a 'online form' to fill inQuote from: reddevilggg on March 02, 2011, 05:10:49 AM
Where I work we download P46 forms from HMRC in PDF format and print them off double sided on a colour laser to send to new recruits along with our own forms for their contact & bank DETAILS. I think it's a waste of money personally, black is just as good, but it's not my money. Like you say I reckon a DOWNLOADABLE TIF must be for printing off and filling in by hand. Go to www.onlinedocumentconversion.com upload your Tiff forms, convert them to rtf & then EDIT with your numbers!. If you want U.S. federal tax forms, you can download them from irs.gov in PDF and view and fill-in using a PDF reader. Quote from: reddevilggg on March 08, 2011, 07:09:54 AM For a price I already posted how to type stuff into a Tiff using MS paint; that poster (vijeta negi) is a spammer, either that or they can't read. |

Solve : PowerPoint Problem - Changing Fonts? |
Answer» I've created a single slide presentation on my MacBook to be used as a poster in Microsoft PowerPoint. I created several charts in Excel that I COPIED into the PowerPoint slide. The charts are bar graphs with the values represented. Every TIME I change the font size of the bar values to 24 font, the file changes them back to 10 point whenever I close it and REOPEN it. This happens to all the data values in the all the charts. The font on the x and y axis stays the same, 24 point, and does not SHIFT back to 10 point, nor do the font sizes in the rest of the slide change. Does anyone have suggestion on how I can stop the file from altering my font? It's very frustrating b/c 10 point is way too small to read on a giant poster Your input is much appreciated. Thanks. What version of PowerPoint are you using? Since version numbers of PowerPoint and MS Office are different for Mac systems than for WINDOWS, do you know Windows version, e.g. Office 2003, Office 2007, Office 2010, your Mac version is equivalent to? |

Solve : Free Firewall program major issues.? |
Answer» I downloaded COMODO Free Firewall from their website today. During installation there was an option to download "GeekBuddy" which is supposed to be a program used for technical help, though it did mention something about speeding up my COMPUTER. After installing it, the Firewall program ran just fine for about 20 minutes with no sign of the GeekBuddy program running. Then a pop up in the bottom corner of the screen asked if I'd like to Optimize my OS. I clicked OK and it started doing whatever it is computer things do. When it finished, a log of "Cleaned" registry entries popped up. I thought nothing of it and closed it out. |

Solve : Mouse going crazy? |
Answer» Hello! My mouse has gone crazy since yesterday. For some reason the SCROLL increases/decreases the volume and doesnt work for scrolling pages down. Clicking it mutes the volume *censored*?! Oh and the forward/backward buttons dont work too, nor the zoom ones. The only ones that work are Left/Right button. I have a software for the mouse (Hama M1130) and its saying that all buttons should do their normal functions (you know, scroll - scroll, forward button - next page, zoom - zoom etc.). I googled it for an HOUR maybe and didnt found a SOLUTION, can SOMEONE help me?OKAY I found a solution Pressing the dpi button for 5 sec makes it that way. What kind of a twisted mind would put that funcion in a mouse and not mention it! |

Solve : Gmail backup methods? |
Answer» Gmail’s e-mail LOSS last WEEK gave me a bit of a scare and made me realize I actually don’t back my e-mail up that much. I used Thunderbird in the PAST and there’s a bunch of Windows-based back-up programs available, but I’m a mac user. ALSO made me think about whether to choose about cloud-based backups or local backups. What do you think?Quote Gmail’s e-mail loss last weekI have a gmail account but I'm not aware of that. What happened? How are you using gmail? Do you have it enabled for POP mail and use an email client on your computer to retrieve email? If so, then you have your mail on your hard drive.
