Solve : CPUID HW Monitor - Just how accurate is this??

Answer»

Just recently installed a new graphics card so I was running CPUID HW monitor to make sure the temps looked good. Everything was running fine. I started to download a game off of Steam so I walked away for awhile to get something to eat. By the time I came back the computer had been idling long enough for the screen to go into power SAVE mode. Moved the MOUSE and the first thing to appear on my screen was the CPUID PROGRAM DISPLAYING a horrible temp change, although it wasn't my graphics card that was the problem.

It was the CPU. The temps were reading in the 70's to 80's!!

Now normally a question like this would be filed under hardware, but a few things don't add up. First of all every time I add/replace a piece of hardware I always do a quick "spot check" around the PC. Making sure all wires are secure, etc. etc. One of the things I checked was the heatsink for the CPU, which was on as tight as ever.

The other odd thing is that those high temps were only on there for a second. Before the words "holy sh--" could finish coming out of my mouth they dropped down to the 50's, then the 40's. Finally, nothing has changed with what I was doing on the PC besides bringing the monitor out of power save mode. I didn't stop downloading the game or anything. And while the temps now are still reading in the safe 40's, it still lists the highest temps read in the 70's/80's. It has only done this with the CPU temps. Everything else is running consistently cool. Heck the mobo doesn't go above the 20's.

I'm still planning on going through the USUAL routine for such high temps. Check them in BIOS to see if they match up, open up the case and double-check the heatsink, maybe even reapply the thermal paste. But the whole situation just seems odd.

So I'm wondering if CPUID has any history of giving screwy CPU temps? And is there possibly a better/more accurate temp monitor someone can recommend? Thanks. Specs listed below;

Mobo: EVGA nForce 680i SLI
CPU: Intel Quad-core Q6700
GPU: ASUS GeForce 210
PSU: Corsair 850W
RAM: 4G OCZ Gold
OS: Windows 7 64-bitYou could cross-reference to check on the difference by using another free software.
Speedfan, SIW, Coretemp. From my experience, HWMonitor readings are off about 20 degrees (up).

Solve : software Removal?

Answer»

hey, guys

does anyone know of a way to remove something like VONGO from my compter have uninstalled it but it is still on my SYSTEM.

thanks for any helpSo, you uninstalled it via Add or Remove Programs, right? What evidence do you see it's still on your system?Google has some info, as always:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=vongo+removal

You may want to visit their site as well:

http://www.vongo.comQuote

So, you uninstalled it via Add or Remove Programs, right? What evidence do you see it's still on your system?

when I do a serach for vongo about 20 different instances show. from short cuts to reinstall.exe'sI suggest you download CCleaner and run it. Run all the scans (Windows, Applications, and Issue). For info on using CCleaner, see http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour/Thank you GX1_Man
If anyone else has a PROBLEM here's what I found a cnet.com, GX1_Man sent me there.

I've written HP for info on removing or uninstalling vongo: this is what they say to do, (haven't tried it yet, but I will)

Uninstall VONGO Software:

1. Restart the Notebook and keep Tapping F8.
2. Select Safe Mode and press ENTER
3. Click on Start, select Run, type "msconfig" press Enter.
4. Click on Startup tab and uncheck the check box besides "isuspm"
5. Click OK and restart the system for the new settings to take effect.
Kate: Note: After you restart the machine you may receive a dialogue box stating 'System is running using Selective Startup', Check 'Don't show this message or launch the system configuration utility when Windows Starts' and click OK.
Kate: Now, restart the Notebook again and go into Safe Mode by tapping F8. Click on Start -> Control Panel -> Add Remove Programs

Locate the Vongo Software and click on Remove to uninstall it.

If this does not resolve the issue, you may have to manually DELETE the files.
Kate: To do that:

1. Double click on My Computer
2. Double click on C Drive
3. Double click on Program Files
4. Select the Vongo Software folder and press Delete.
5. Close the Window
6. Right click on Recycle Bin folder and select Empty Recycle Bin

This will remove the Software.
Kate: Now, run the Windows Installation Cleanup Utility, this will remove the registry entries for the Software.

You can download the Utility from the given below link:

http://download.microsoft.com/download/e/9/d/e9d80355-7ab4-45b8-80e8-983a48d5e1bd/msicuu2.exe

Note: Please do not click on the link. Copy and paste the complete link in the address bar of the Internet Explorer.

The Windows Installer CleanUp Utility does:

• Provide a dialog box where you can select one or more programs that were installed by Windows Installer. You select the programs on the Installed Products list in the Windows Installer CleanUp dialog box. After you make this selection, the utility removes only the Windows Installer configuration information that is related to those programs.

• Remove the files and registry settings that make up the Windows Installer configuration information for programs that you select.Sometimes it is easier not to install something than to get rid of it.

What did you think about the Vongo service after your experience for future reference.seamanken, that lengthy procedure starts with the normal program removal procedure of going to Add or Remove Programs to remove the program. I had asked you whether you had done that, and your reply implied that you had done so.

That procedure you copied from a website appears to be a thorough procedure and may indeed be necessary but I'm still inclined to think CCleaner might be a good alternative and an easier way to get the job done. Anyway, wouldn't hurt to try CCleaner.Quote

Solve : No Messages showing up under my Inbox within Windows Live Mail!??

Answer»

Hello There!

This ONE is really an SOS. Please help me! Suddenly, all my messages from within the Inbox have disappeared.

Iam using Windows Live Mail-XP edition. My MSN account has been configured to it. "SENT" items are intact.

Today, when I first opened the WLM, it even prompted 1 New message!..but, Inbox is still empty!??

Junk folder do not contains any message.

Under "View" Menu, nothing seem SIGNIFICANT, related to this issue! Any ideas??So, you have an MSN email account that's been set up in WLM, right? Is it set up as a POP account in WLM? Do you have it set to leave messages on the server?

Any other accounts in WLM? Have you recently changed any settings in WLM? Have you recently made any software changes to your computer, such as antivirus or anti-spyware programs?

Can you access your MSN email online, i.e. via web browser? If so, do you see any messages are there? Yes Dear Soybean!

My MSN account has been configured within WLM. Its a POP Account. Secondly, I don't remember if WLM had ever ask me to allow leaving messages on the Server!?
But then yes, my maibox is empty, when accessed using web browser(the usual method).

The only other account I have within WLM is the one offered by my ISP. WLM picked it up by default, I SUPPOSE through Outlook express!

No changes with respect to Antimalware utilities have been made.

Just a sec., let me scour through my ISP A/c. mailbox. I'll also try sending a mail to myself.

Will get back to you SOON....!Quote from: Saurabhdua on March 30, 2011, 01:42:43 AM

But then yes, my maibox is empty, when accessed using web browser(the usual method).

This would mean the issue is within the mail service. You should contact Microsoft about it.

Solve : MS Works?

Answer»

Since I am all set-up with OpenOffice and the free trial edition of MS 2010 Office, I thought I would be clever and uninstall MS Works. Now I can not open documents I created in Wordpad. I went to the MS web site to download Works but don't know which version I UNINSTALLED.

What is the best way to regain access to my Wordpad documents? Thanks.

Update: I found and used the HP Recovery Applications tool to reinstall MS Works 8.0. It said MS Works was reinstalled successfully but it isn't there. Please help.Quote

It isn't where? Where did you look for it?It isn't listed in the Control Panel or Start>All Programs. When I try to open a Wordpad document with Wordpad, I get gibberish. I can open it with MS 2010 Office but I can't with OpenOffice. When I try OpenOffice I get a dialog box ASKING me to select a filter and I don't see one for Wordpad.

Wordpad is still on my computer. I have WinXP. Can I have Wordpad but not MS Works?

Can I have Wordpad but not MS Works?
Sure. WordPad comes with all Windows systems. MS Works does not and it is not free, although it may SEEM so since it's sometimes installed on new computers by the manufacturer.

Ok. How can I recover the MS Works that I stupidly uninstalled? Why is my HP Recovery tool telling me it reinstalled MS Works when it didn't?

I am assuming that the absence of MS Works is why I can't open my Wordpad documents. Do you THINK this is the case?Quote from: artbuc on March 28, 2011, 04:56:44 PM

Exactly how did you go about trying to reinstall MS Works? I'm not familiar with how MS Works might be separately installed from an "HP Recovery tool". I have a Compaq laptop. If I use the Recovery partition on the hard drive, it will restore the system to exactly the way it was when the computer was new; it will not allow me to pick and choose what gets installed. I would have guessed your HP Recovery tool works the same way but your comments indicate otherwise. So, again, please explain your attempted procedure step by step. Perhaps someone else will be able to assist.

Quote from: artbuc on March 28, 2011, 04:56:44 PM

No. The usual format/file extension for a Works word processing file is .wps. For a Wordpad file, it's .rtf. What is the file extension on the files you are trying, but unable, to open?Ok. So I did create the documents in Works because they are wps files. That must be why I can not open them with Wordpad.

Reinstall Process I used:

StartChoose "Application Installation"
Highlight MS Works 8.0
Click Install

After installation is finished, I get message confirming MS Works 8.0 was successfully reinstalled, BUT it isn't!!!
well, I don't know why Works does not appear to be installing for you. So, as an alternative solution, I suggest you use http://www.zamzar.com/ to convert your Works, i.e. .wps, files to WordPad or Word format. Thanks. I did a Google search and found another person who had the same experience with HP Application Recovery trying to reinstall Works.

I downloaded a converter from MS. You can convert wps files to Word which I can then open with OO. I don't have too many wps files so it isn't a big deal.

Thanks alot for your help and interest. OK, sounds like you found a good solution. I see that works to Word converter mentioned at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315757

Solve : How to extract and import Outlook 2003 data from?

Answer»

How do you extract and import data from Outlook 2003 on a system with a crashed Windows XP OS, but you can access the data by plugging the HD in as a Slave drive to navigate through the files and folders that are all accessible?

The OS is swiss cheese after adware and virus's. I got rid of the problems and now need a way to copy the data over from one hard drive to the now healthy laptop waiting to have the outlook e-mail, address book, contacts, etc imported to it. BTW: The virus did not penetrate through e-mail it was free downloaded junk that was a download trojan.

Looked for an Archive.PST, but it appears as though the user did not have autoarchive enabled...

-- If I could load or launch the Outlook 2003 off that Hard Drive, I could probably do the Export to File and Import from File, but I know that this wont work, because of the lack of registry keys tying my OS to the Outlook 2003 on this other hard drive.

Thanks for your help on this one... DaveHow about backup.pst or Outlook.pst? Thanks for your help ... but oddly there are no PST files. I searched the entire hard drive for *.pst with no matches... So I wonder if there is another extension used that I am unaware of... :-/

DaveHey everyone, I came up with a work around, but still WONDERING why there are no PST files. I built a spare P-III system up and installed Outlook 2003. Then took that hard drive and connected it through a IDE to USB converter device to avoid file in use problems. I then copy and pasted overtop of the new Outlook 2003 install to bring everything over and have the registry keys match up. Took the hard drive then and put it back in the P-III box and fired it up..

I was then able to run Import/Export from Outlook to create the Backup.PST to my pen drive.

I then imported the Backup.PST to the healthy laptop..

MY GOD ... What a hoakey fix to get the data I needed out of Outlook 2003.
Still stumped why there was no PST files :-/
...Without a PST, where are all the data stored?? :-? :-? :-?

Well I am happy that I got the data for the client to make them happy ... 8-)Thanks for sharing that work around procedure with US. Glad to HEAR problem solved.Just to ask the obvious - were you searching hidden files and folders?Hey... I actaully missed the advanced search function in the Search to Specify that Hidden files/folders be added to search criteria, but still no matches to *.pst ... Convinced it must be some other format possibly.. Just no info out there on it and I dont WANT to blow away a support call with MS on this, since it is resolved, and probably something stupid.

Below is pasted screen clips of the Search and the Properties to include Hidden Files/Folders at both locations .... VERY STRANGE !!!

I am going to mount the drive from the laptop that has the blown Windows OS and connect through the IDE to USB converter to and perform a search again. Maybe the hidden files didnt get copied over when selecting everything to copy over to my C:\didi folder. Maybe with the search set to regular vs advanced to search hidden files, it was missed. Will post what my findings are... :-/On XP, the folder containing the Outlook datastore is USUALLY Microsoft\Outlook under the hidden folder, Application Settings within the user's profile folder. Sometimes it appears under the Local Settings folder instead.

Solve : Restore from Backup to Dissimilar Hardware?

Answer»

First of all - this is NOT a request for assistance. Instead, it is what I hope will be positive news and encouragement to any readers of this very helpful forum who, like me, have long wondered whether it really is possible to backup a computer, and restore that backup to a completely different computer.

I have a customer who uses a 5 year old Dell Precision M90 Workstation Laptop, running XP Pro, to operate his professional tax service business. It doesn't require much effort to imagine the crunch he's in right now. Well, yesterday, he brought the laptop in with 9 years of tax software, customer records, emails, etc., residing on the machine's original hard drive, which had just refused to boot. I determined the hard drive had to be replaced. The customer said he could not wait the 48 hours it WOULD take to get a replacement hard drive. Using Acronis True Image 2010, with Plus Pack (Universal Restore), I made a full backup of the non-booting, but still accessible hard drive. I HAPPENED to have a refurbished Dell 2400 Celeron- powered 6 or 7 year old desktop which was available. I STORED the desktop's original drivers on a folder on the same external hard drive I had used for backing up the inoperative laptop; and, within a couple of hours, using Acronis' Universal Restore capability, had a working copy of the laptop's installation on the old Dell 2400's vintage, but thoroughly checked out, hard drive. Everything worked perfectly, and my customer will be using the replacement machine for as long as necessary to get the laptop up and running.

If I had not personally participated in this process, I would not have believed it possible. I have made many, many Acronis backups; and restored many of those backups to the same machines, frequently using new hard DRIVES; but never from one computer to a completely different hardware platform.

I hope this will serve as a useful approach to consider for any of you out there who, like me, may have had DOUBTS about its feasibility.Acronis introduced this function with either the 2009 or 2010 version of True Image. As a long time True Image user I've had this capability but have yet to try it. Nice to hear it works as advertised.I've had similar success with Symantec (Norton) Ghost Enterprise (DOS) version.

Solve : Windows Stuck running a Hard Drive Image??

Answer»

I actually don't know where to put this...

I am TRYING to clean a friends computer which is badly infected. (It infected itself in the master boot record).
The problem is every time I start windows, clean stuff or change anything and restart the computer. Everything gets loaded as it did if nothing happen.

I manage to fix the first one by running windows recovery and using fixmbr. Now the problem is getting windows to accept changes I made.

If I install programs and clean the computer up, The software installs, the computer says stuff are clean up, but when the computer restarts the application is gone and the infection is back where it was located.

Has anyone ENCOUNTER this before?

I moved the hard drive and plugged it into another computer and it manage to clean 2 things out, but when I plug the hard drive back into this computer. Its the same image and when I run a2 or malwarebytes it still shows 8 infections as well as the cookies and temp that I thought I deleted?

I don't see any programs that would indicate that the computer is running off of an image. If anyone knows where to look or where to start I greatly appreciate it. I can't seem to make any permanent changes to itWhat makes you think the MBR was infected ? ?When you turn on the computer you see the things you normally would see. Then suddenly this angry red and orange screen would pop up and say warning something about boot record infected, please hit enter for more information and Y to continue. If you hit Y it ask you if you are sure.. Then sometimes it would LOAD XP, sometimes the computer would just restart and you get that red message screen again.

That screen says its from Trend Micro and a link on it says please visit antivirus.com for more information.

That is suspicious to me because they don't even use Trend Micro. They brought a version of McCrappy Total unProtection just one month ago, when there computer got infected. Not an MBR infection...it's happening after Post...Well I used Windows Recovery consul and used fixmbr and that red and yellow screen disappeared. XP seems to boot just fine now. I also thought something could have corrupted the Bios and was going to flash/ upgrade it. However I don't see any system performance problems so I will just leave it alone.

I did finally managed to figure out why the hard drive was not allowing any changes. A while back I installed Microsoft Steady State on the machine because they seem to be catching so much viruses, and they use the computer for typing documents, checking email and sometimes shopping. I installed that software so that when the computer restarts any viruses or nasty stuff would be deleted. Apparently sometime when I installed it to the time I got the computer. Someone improperly deleted the steady state. The registry was still there and they did not turn off the hard drive protect and restrictions. ( long story short) I managed to get the program reinstalled and turned off the Hard drive protection as well as restore all settings. Took me a while to figure out, but now the drive is editable and I am now just clearing up the infections and installing the windows update. (I still have a copy of windows steady state 2.5 even though they discontinue and its not available for download anymore) It was a great software to bad they discontinue it. It was a deepfreeze alternative and it was free )

I have no idea how they keep catching these nasty infections, at least this time I managed to convince them to put a password on there wireless network, so hopefully that will solve some problems. Also going to recommend that they put passwords on the administrator accounts. I might create a power user and tell them to use that instead of just always logging on as an admin. They should log in as an admin only if necessary.

They just recently brought a mac as a backup because they are so tired of catching viruses and having there computer getting serviced because of some virus. I am going to clean up this machine install any windows update that is needed. Also going to install and dual boot Ubuntu as a second operating system if they catch a virus in Windows again.

They brought McAfee Total Protection and they called support and they did a remote scan and said the computer was "clean" unrealized when the computer restarts it all came back, so they were somewhat pissed because they paid for the all in one security suite and it did not do the job as it was suppose to, plus the tech said they could find nothing wrong with the computer and the computer should be fixed after whatever scan and whatever they did when it was remote accessed.

Just curious is there any software I can install to supplement there current protection. We know that even with paid software they don't exactly do as GOOD of a job as people expect it should. I was hoping for some freeware I can install with their "total" protection. I have firefox withe no script and adblock but everyone in the house seems to use IE because it is just so use to it. I don't know any adblock software that is free for IE and maybe that would help?

They caught this virus apparently with one of those popups that says do you want to scan your computer for infections and they clicked on the X box thinking it would close out. Anyways another long post that no one will read, probably just SKIM through, hopefully all that is left is a straight forward virus/malware removal. Update all the necessary software like windows update, flash, java, adobe reader, etc... all those good stuff.

Also anyone know a free software alternative to norton ghost that allows a person to clone an image of the hard drive and saves a partition to the computer? I think I want to do that also, just to save future headache. If they caught a nasty virus again just recover the partition as it was once it was clean and updated as best as I could at the time. I installed a second hard drive on the comp and they are suppose to put all documents and stuff there in case they need to reformat windows or something like this was to happen. Again they didn't use it (sigh) This time McAfee provides backup through mozy. So I just set the computer to just backup the my documents folder. Worst case computer needs to be wiped at least they have a copy of there stuff online..Quote

Also anyone know a free software alternative to norton ghost that allows a person to clone an image of the hard drive and saves a partition to the computer?

Fraps is out of question - it lags my PC as if it was a snail on ceisure or smth...

Tahnks in advance If you have an S-Video, dual video port, or hdmi available on your video card that is not being used, you could always send this signal to a digital recorder and have NO LAG at all...only problem is that you also need to capture your audio which your video card does not output, so you would need to add a Y-splitter or send the audio directly into a digital recorder device (DVR) and then edit it later etc. Any software or hardware added to the system will USE resources which will degrade performance. I have captured games before by use of S-Video port and a phono type headphone to RCA audio cable to get video and sound. I then can edit it and burn a DVD of the material which I then can place into my computer and edit it further by converting the DVD to a digital video MP4 or AVI etc.

This cost me just $20 in cables to do this, since I already have a DVR.

FRAPS is a resource hog, especially on older systems. If your running a Pentium 4 3.2 Ghz and tried to use FRAPS, I am surprised you didnt have 90% lag. I own a copy of FRAPS and I would suggest that a true Dual Core System with at least 2 gigs of Ram be used and not a single core with virtual second core that the 3.2ghz probably as if its the P4 3.2Ghz HT (Hyperthreading). Also the hard drive should have plenty of free space available or you could run out of space quickly with FRAPS as for it writes directly to the hard drive without COMPRESSION, so a 5 minute video capture could be as insane as 20GB in size until edited and compressed/encoded into say an AVI that is 300MB. FRAPS is mean on hard drives, the HD led will be pegged solid when capturing, which could be abusive to IDE drives while SATA drives would handle it better.Quote from: DaveLembke on March 11, 2011, 08:42:29 PM

Heavier games may need more cores to keep up. I'm able to use FRAPS to record Fallout 3 gameplay at 1440x900 with absolutely no slowdown at all (surprisingly). Of course at that resolution, the files grow rather quickly.

A lot of contiguous free space helps; this is one of the few scenarios that I personally would ever consider forcing defragmentation with the utility.

Quote
which could be abusive to IDE drives while SATA drives would handle it better.
ATA-7(133 mbps) hasn't yet been saturated by consumer level hard drives... Either way, he hardware is the same with either drive so wether the drive's logic board happens to be IDE or SATA doesn't really matter. Usually the throughput of a drive is well below the 133mbps saturation for ATA-7; the possible burst rate might exceed it but at the same time Bursts are short, usually a few seconds; recording a video via FRAPS usually pegs I/O DPCs for quite a while.

On that note, it's faster to write the data uncompressed then to try to save space "on the fly" by compressing it, unless you use a very simple codec, or if you have lots of spare cores lying around; otherwise it just means even more work and will usually even in the best of cases result in dropped frames.

Another possibility, depending on exactly what the game is and what you need the video for, is that many games allow for "demo" recording. You could record the gameplay in this manner and then play it back with an appropriate capture setup at a later time; some games even have built in AVI recording for Demo playback, which results in completely smooth video (since the program can takes it's time on each frame without skipping/dropping any)

1. I don't have any recorders
2. I don't have ANY money to spend on PC pimping Could try Camstudio. Never used it myself.

I don't think it'll work very well; FRAPS is probably the more performant recording software (it works better then Camtasia for me, performance wise, certainly not feature wise)I'll try that, thanks You can have a try on FlashDemo Screen Recorder http://www.flashdemo.net.You can have a free-trial but only 15 days..

It works really good but need money to buy if expired....Thanks, i'll try it

Solve : Anyone good with BART PE custom CD creation?

Answer»

Hey... Has anyone here worked with Bart PE to know how to add Norton Antivirus to its build? If you dont know what Bart PE is you might not be able to answer my question, but here is what it is in case it is new to you and of interest; it is a tool to make Live Bootable CD's of Windows XP. So that the system can be booted from the bootable CD or DVD like a system emergency boot disk, but with write protection.

The tool is supposed to allow you to add PROGRAMS, grab them, from your system and build a working live CD for your hardware that boots off the CD or DVD and allows for read-only data access from CD or DVD.

I've tried about 4 burns without being able to get the Norton Antivirus to work on it. You can see it in the Start, Programs, Symantec Norton AV, but when selecting it, the CD spins up and nothing....

Maybe I am missing something, but Bart PE website doesnt show any Red Flags for Norton AV being incompatable etc...

Maybe I should try a different AV Utility due to an incompatability with Bart PE and Norton AV, since Norton is meant to be run from a hard drive and not a virtual space in RAM which acts as a Hard Drive.

BTW: I have 1GB of RAM, so it should be PLENTY...

http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/

Thanks... :-? :-?I would try AVG and ditch Norton in a heartbeat...

Avast has a free AV as well but i prefer AVG.I think a for a program to work in PE it has to be somewhat portable... that is to say the program will work without being installed or you can copy the installed failes and it happens to run(not likely 1-100)... you should read more about it in help there is a lot of help.... also there is alot of half installed programs that you only need to download specified files and add to certain folders for them to work....

Alternatively you can make a simple PE cd and use a flash drive or usb hdd with portable programs...Below is the plugin to add AVG Free to your build...

HereThanks for all the help ... will add AVG to the build and see if that works vs Norton [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Solve : Programs will not start?

Answer»

Thanks. I have installed AVG 7.5 hopefully more successful than AVG7.1 that let something nasty through and did not find it! I already had AdAware
Spybot, CCleaner and have downloaded Ewido (which is now called AVG Anti-Spyware). Still don't know what to do about a decent firewall so am USING Zone Alarm again.
There are many different variants of baddies out there that can hit you so don't jump the gun on blaming AVG...
This is why we suggest a well rounded protection package in our Knowledge Database.
For example any AV program not just AVG is a little WEAK on detecting trojans...which is why Ewido is suggested as it specialises in that variant.
But Ewido's strong suit isn't spyware which is why Spybot is suggested etc. etc. etc
You get the picture.

patio. 8-)I UNDERSTAND what you are saying Patio, though I did have other security on my computer as well as AVG 7.1. I now have:-
AVG 7.5
AVG antispyware
Cyber Hawk
Spybot
Spyware Blaster
Spyware Terminator
Ad-Aware
RemoveIt
Win Patrol
Zone Alarm

and use Advance Windows Care2 and CCleaner.

All these are checked for updates daily and run daily. I am using Win XP Pro on dial up, but will shortly be switching to broadband. Is there any other security it would be wise to install?
Also Zone Alarm installs as stealth in internet zone and MEDIUM in trusted zone. If I put trusted zone up to stealth will it cause problems (for me!)? I have posted that question elswhere and RECIEVED one answer, but would like to be sure.

Solve : media center 11 and WINtv pvr 2....compatible???

Answer»

I'm in need of product knowledge. When I purchased my compaq in August,06. They recommended Wintv pvr2 to run with Media Center 11. I downloaded the product and after 2 days of running tv and recording programs (only 4 hours) the computer crashed(2nd time in 3 months) (I also run my DTV thru both programs)

Is there a conflict in running wintv and media center? are they like minded products ( do the same job)? should I just be running my DTV thru media center and forget about adding the wintv?

maxDo you have a built in tuner card if not i would sugest that rout . My card is buit in and not problems I record over 15 hours a day.
You can never have too much GOOD TV And you have time to watch TV 15 hours a day?It would be great if someone would actually give some advise and not be flipant about someone's problem. I thought by coming to a forum someone would actually help.

As you can see I'm not the one watching 15hours of tv per day. I just want to know what can be done to fix my problem or if someone had some experience with this situation.

Obviously this is a forum to criticize people and their problems and not help.

Thanks for your ignorance, better help the next stupid PERSON in line wating to use this "no help forum"

Solve : Excel/Openoffice: How do I rearrange/reorder 100s of fields without manual drag??

Answer»

How to rearrange the order of fields in Excel/spreadsheet?

For example, the order I currently have:
Name:
Phone:
Email:
Address:
Fax:
Website:

But I want:
Name:
Address:
Phone:
Fax:
Email:
Website:

The problem is there are MANY entries in that order, and I CANNOT manually change/drag rows one by one.You can do it with cell references. I am testing this right now, but first please confirm that your data is in rows like this

I have TESTED it. But I await your confirmation as requested above.
Judging by the deafening silence, I expect the OP has worked out how to do this; it is really very obvious, but just in case ANYBODY else is interested, here is how I did it...

Using the first 6 rows which form the set of information about 1 person, in the 2 columns to the right (C and D), I entered formulae to display the contents of columns A and B in the order desired.

(1) Formula view

(2) Values view

Next, I highlighted from C1 to C6 and copied to the clipboard, and PASTED down to the rest of COLUMN C. Then I highlighted D1 to D6, copied them and pasted to the rest of column D.

Then I selected the entire columns C and D, copied them to the clipboard, selected cell A1 of an new worksheet, then "Paste special", values, OK.

(3) Final result

Solve : How to edit scan English documents in USA??

How to edit scan English documents in USA? Please suggest me.Your post makes little sense. If you mean what I think you do, the answer might be "With with a scanning package that has OCR capability, linked to a word processor application." What you mean by "English" is not clear, and NEITHER is "in USA".

"edit scan" also makes no sense. What do you mean? Do you want to edit or do you want to scan? Quote from: soybean on March 26, 2011, 07:13:33 AM

I saw it as something that non-native speakers do a LOT; confusion of verb and adjective (i.e. scan and scanned) and READ it as "How to edit scanned documents". Of course I MAY be wrong. Who can tell what he means?

Solve : Loading favorites or bookmarks into Firefox?

Answer»

My computer crashed recently and along with it my BOOKMARKS. Fortunately I backed them up into a file I called bookmarks. When I try to IMPORT them from the file into the program, it doesn't work. I have been to the Mozilla knowledge base and what they instruct to do there doesn't work. I have tried to load them on IE so that I could import from there and that doesn't work, either. I renamed the file to bookmarks.HTM and that doesn't work either. I have googled the net to see if there's software out there that will convert the file to an html file and I haven't found anything. I can open those bookmarks anywhere but in Firefox. Is there a SOLUTION to this problem? No, but if you ever get them back there is a free program to backup Firefox bookmarks (and Thunderbird mail). It works great.

http://mozbackup.jasnapaka.com/Quote

I renamed the file to bookmarks.htm and that doesn't work either.
What was the original file name? The file should be bookmarks.html and a .htm file can be renamed with the proper extension. Use the search function to locate the EXACT folder where Firefox has stored the bookmarks. Rename or overwrite the existing file with your bookmarks.html file. Be certain that the file you saved can be opened with Firefox before doing this. To do this, highlight the file name, hold down the shift key and right click. Select 'Open with' and then choose Firefox from the list. If Firefox successfully opens the file, you should be be good to go.The file extension info would be helpful at this point...Patio, have you tried MozBackup?Yep and i love it...

Solve : Please help. I am going crazy?

Answer»

My computer is frustrating me to no end. This morning I woke up to find that Microsoft Word would not open. Every time I tried to open it, it tried to install Microsoft 2000 over and over and over again. I tried to reboot the computer but it did not work. I tried to restore to an earlier time when the known settings were working, it did not work. I tried to set the computer back to yesterday and it told me nothing had changed.

I tried to talk to HP techs. First they told me to restore, and defrag. I did both. Then they told me something else. Next they told me that I must be mistaken, never had the software and it was a sixty day trial (I've had the computer for two years and I have the disks :-?.)

So I googled and I could not find any information on the problem. I thought uninstalling all of my Microsoft programsL publisher, works, and 2000 would be a GOOD idea. Nope. Now the link beeps at me and tells me Word is not installed. I cannot uninstall anything with the microsoft name because it all tries to load Microsoft 2000.

I can't figure the glitch out at all and it is driving me crazy. I swear my computer is being possessed by Bill Gates.

I am running Windows XP on a Hewlitt Packard computer. I did download INTERNET Explorer 7 on the 19th and on the 27th, I added Family Tree Maker and GenSmart. I have since removed Gensmart because I thought maybe it was the culprit. I had Family Tree Maker 9 for years so I don't think that is messing it up.

Please help. I am a WRITER and a MOM of a little girl in school and we depend on having word there for us. Thank you.Are you sure you are free of viruses and spyware? That is the first place to start.

Is there a listing in Add and Remove Programs in Control Panel to remove Word (or all of Office if that is what you have)? If so remove it totally and reinstall.

If there is no listing there, just try a full reinstall. Sometimes that will help you remove it first. If so,do that. Sometimes the SIMPLEST solution is the best.

Post back your findings. That was the weird thing every time I tried to uninstall any microsoft program from ad/remove it would just try to install microsoft office 2000 ove and over and over again. I finally wound up doing a safe reboot and turning off a bunch of useless junk in the startup file. Then I ran chkdsk and rebooted. That found a ton of errors in win/sys32/igfxrheb.lrc. Whatever the *censored* that is. It fixed them and fixed a bunch of spaces too. That took about an hour. Then I used Microsoft Works Cleanup to completely remove that because that was giving me a fatal error. Reinstalled office, downloaded Works Cleanup and ran that. Rebooted, reinstalled works and all was good.

It took me to 3 in the morning but it was well worth the lack of sleep! And Bill Gates has been excised from my computer once more LOL. Thanks for your help!he'll be back when you update your computer

Solve : PVR's - Secondary Audio problem?

Answer»

With the PVR software I have tried (InterVideo, Beyond TV, Neo TV, ArcSoft) I keep having the same problem when it comes to audio.

When watching channels 27, 32, 36, an audion message says that I'm listening to the secondary audio of the channel (and to change my settings to ENGLISH), or the audio is in Spanish.

I use InterVideo right now. When I changed the audio setting to mono instead of STEREO, the channels play normally.

We don't have this problem when watching regular TV. Why does it happen on the computer? Is there a way to fix it so I can use the stereo setting?

Thanks - Kimberli

Solve : WD Back-up software?

Answer»

I was looking at external WD harddrives today. Noticed that they have built-in software (SmartWare, I think) which automatically backs-up files as soon as they are created or changed.

Will this back-up software interfere with an imaging back-up software? Do I even need an imaging software with the WD software? Thanks.Never mind. I just read a boatload about Smartware and I am not touching it. Guess I'll look at Seagate products. Thanks anyway.

Edit: Ok, now see that I can get a LOWER end WD Elements model w/o Smartware. Consumer ratings look very good on this basic model.Hope you make a good choice.
Make sure you are buying a CURRENT model of any external hard drive from any maker. Awhile back there were some serious problems with certain models. The problems were later corrected.

Check out the warranty and return policies. Some local stores in your area may have higher prices along with a more liberal return policy. In the USA you want to check Best Buy, Fry's, Stables and Wall mart. Being able to INSTANTLY rerun and item can be worth the higher price.
Best Buy carried only the upper end WD's with Smartware. Walmart didn't have much. Amazon had the 320GB WD Element for $58 plus free shipping. I buy alot of stuff from Amazon and they have a great hassle-free return policy. I only need 30GB. Thanks for your help.

PS I was shocked to see the overwhelming and virtually unanimous negatives on SmartWare. I don't know anything about it, but I WOULD guess that WD is in trouble on this one. This is typical:

http://www.complaintsboard.com/complaints/smartware-c387444.htmlYeah, that is rather negative.
There are many good External and Internal HDD choices.
http://reviews.cnet.com/hard-drives/
In the above link, you have to search o find WD at the bottom of the list. Yet there are some happy WD customers out there.

Solve : Which OS is more used??

Answer»

I hear porting games is a a very good alternative to emulation.I like Win98SE, but there is no point in putting it on new hardware, plus its no longer supported by MS for critical patches. Its best to match OS with Hardware of its time and GAME of its time, less likely to have problems.

Like I have a Pentium 1 MMX, 200 Mhz running dual boot Windows 95B/98SE for older gaming like STARCRAFT, DIABLO 1, WarCraft II, and the stack of Sierra Games that require older hardware for sound support on the Sound Blaster 16 ISA Card. The 3 games listed actually run fine on newer hardware as long as it is a 32-bit OS, but I've heard about gaming troubles with 64-bit OS.

Ever since Windows 2000 Pro, I have switched over to NT OS for security and reliability. Stinks though that MS will be canning support on Windows 2000 Pro/Sever in January 2007 from what a friend told me.

Solve : TIP: Adobe Reader Direct Download?

Answer»

OK. I admit it. Adobe Reader seems to have lost a lost of weight since I last used it. It still feels a bit heavy but it's not a lumbering behemoth like it used to be. (Or maybe I just have a faster MACHINE).

Anyway, the only lingering annoyance is really the same as with Flash; you NEED to download some download "MANAGER" thing, which in turn downloads Reader.

Turns out they actually have a standard MSI that you can download directly, it ESSENTIALLY amounts to an "offline installer" of sorts, and can be helpful for getting Reader onto machines that are not and/or cannot be connected to the internet.

When I plug it in to my PC (Windows XP) it gives me the( "index.html" broken or not in usable format ) error box. It doesn't matter if I use the USB cable or plug the card into my printer still get same error box. I first used system restore, it did not help. I then uninstalled Fine Pix Viewer and put CD in and re-installed with no change. I am hoping someone can steer me in the right direction.
Regards, Jeffmemory flash card might be bad.... Try reformatting it. It should mount as a drive say letter G: or something like that in "MY COMPUTER" or Windows Explorer.

After formatting, place back into camera, make sure camera has a fresh charge or SET of batteries, and try it out..

If you were using the camera under a low battery condition, data could have been written back incorrectly to the flash card.

DaveThank you for the reply! I guess I should have stated that the camera will download on my wifes computer with no problems. I will try what you suggested but like I said it will work on my wifes.
Thanks, again.
Regards, JeffIf you open My Computer with the camera attached and switched on, does it appear there under Devices with Removable Storage? Also, does the Safely Remove Hardware icon appear in the Notification Area when you attach the camera?

Is that sfc (space) /scannow?
Thanks for the prompt reply.
Regards, JeffYep...don't forget the space.Since you've mentioned a possible Registry issue, I suggest you download CCleaner and run it. Be sure to run the Issues scan; that's the Registry cleaning part of CCleaner. No gaurantee that this will make any difference but CCleaner is very safe to use and is a good computer maintenance tool.

If you want to learn more about CCleaner before you use it, go here: http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour/. But, I suggest you download it from the above site rather than CCleaner's site. The full download from their site includes the Yahoo toolbar, which I suggest you avoid. However, if you download the full installation file from CCleaner's site, you can elect to not install the Yahoo toolbar; the option APPEARS on screen soon after starting the installation.First off a Big Thank You to all who replied!

I did the scannow thing and a WINDOW came up with "Trapped EXCEPTION in TPKCOPYFORM::fCopywDelete" I have no idea what it is but I just restarted comp and went from there.

I got my pics to download but not like it used to do. I now have to go to My Computer - FinePixG - DCIM - FUJI100 then my pics show up. From there I right click on pic and select "open with FinePixViewer then I can drag and drop pics into FinePixViewer and do my resizing and saving. Like I said not the way it used to be but I can live with this! Thanks again so much for the help I've been fighting this since summer.

Thank You Again!
Best Regards, JeffGlad to hear you are all fixed up....and stop by anytime !

Solve : Help with .phw files please?

Answer»

Hi everyone.

I have some files on a dvd that have the .phw extension. When i looked this up on the net i find that they are PhotoWebber files. I cannot find any way of OPENING theses files. Has anyone come across them or does anyone know how I can open them? I don't have the program PhotoWebber. I have tried changing the extension but no program can read them. The files are quite large which makes me think they are video, but changing the extension to .ave etc doesn't work. One file is 641,520 kb. Can anyone please help me to open these .phw files? Best wishes, RayThe app works with Photoshop files....it may or may not be able to view them however.Hi thanks for your reply. I have tried to open these .phw files with photoshop, but it doesn't recognise them. Any other ideas? I'd be grateful for any help to open these files. Thanks, RayMaybe do a Google search for a free\trial download of PhotoWebber. It APPEARS to be the only program able to view the .phw files. When I have this type of problem, I usually open the file in a hex editor and look at the first two to three bytes to determine the type of file. You can then type those letters into google and find out what the file is.

You can get a free hex ed here: http://mh-nexus.de/en/hxd/The file type has already been determined here...Quote

Yes, but I don't think the right type was determined. It doesn't SEEM right that a photo program would produce a 641MB file. How do you know ? ?
It could be a slideshow presentation...if you've ever worked with Photoshop files you'lld be aware of some pretty large file sizes...Quote from: Linux711 on March 23, 2011, 11:42:02 AM
It doesn't seem right that a photo program would produce a 641MB file.

Why not? That is a ridiculous thing to write. Anyhow, Photowebber phw files are "session files". These are project files containing many images. The project files are a lot like *.WMM (Windows Movie Maker) files, in that they both are project files that can be converted to other file types in the host software. In other words, you would open a WMM file in Windows Movie Maker in order to compile that project file into an AVI or whatever FORMAT you want. It's the same with Photowebber, only instead of compiling a video format, it converts the project into a web page. So the final web page might be quite small but the project file containing the original media to be processed could be a GOOD deal larger.

Solve : SCANNER SOFTWARE problem?

Answer»

I am using (I was using) HP4570 scanner. It will not let me remove the software (error 2343) and reinstall from disc. HP fix of loading old 4070 software to get rid of removal problem does not change anything. I am guessing it is the recent IE7 download that has screwed things up as I have heard bad reports of this kind of thing from others. Any experience of this kind of thing? Do I have to reload the operating system (and maybe go back to IE6) to eradicate the problem? Read the below website.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/fastFaqLiteDocument?lc=it&cc=it&docname=bps05728&product=15195&dlc=itIE7 strikes again? Thanks, Microsoft. Thanks gentlemen - I was given the registry option by HP by I have never been into that side of computers before and FEAR I may screw up THRU misunderstanding the instructions or because of some unforseen glitch. After all, removing software and reinstalling is pretty basic and scanjet screwed up with that operation which is why I am in this pickle. I am leaning towards grabbing my essential stuff on USB removable media (my DVD WRITER is refusing to recognise my blank disc too (more IE7?)), then reinstalling the operating system - supposing no glitch OCCURS in that operation in which case it may be Russian roulette with a full clip for me.
Thanks again for the advice.A reload of Windows would DEFINITELY solve the problem, whatever it was. make sure you back up first

Solve : Media Center Receiver Service HELP ME!!!?

Answer»

This is my first time on this forum.

This computer is only 2 weeks old and im running into a problem that happens every 30 seconds it seems. I get this LOVELY message.

"Media Center Receiver Service has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

I click Don't Send and it reappers. I Sent it 100 times. Still happens. Help me fix this. I want to throw my LCD screen through a window because of this thing. I cannot enjoy my new computer because of this.

HELP ME PLEASE!!!I would hope you got a warranty with that. I would recommend UTILIZING that before any monkeying around with it, and certainly before throwing it. Return that machine for a replacement with XP installed instead...Media Center has known issues.well it's ready for the new Windows, and I have a copy coming when they get released. IT is Windows XP, but just with the media center since it has a tv tuner. I think i got a warranty, not a long one tho. :sigh:I have Media Center it works great the only thing is its not like power point, wnen you watch tv it will go into screen saver mode (I find it takes about t double the time you set), but it does. My only complant. I love it.

I LIED one other. it can sometimes freez up if I have a LOT of tv stored and it is trying to find the LINKS for them all so I can select them, but I think that is because I only have 1 gig. of ram and i work my computer too hard.

I there a way that i can hide a column but still keep the VALUES in a bar chart?

I have created a bar chart, but the x-axis was MADE from values in cells that are not in the chart table (the table has 10<20 and 20<30 etc, but the bar chart just need 10, 20, 30. Solve : music/ video??

Answer»

i'm a little compused. I've got many mp3's, those are music files, and i've got som mpg files, those are films+ right, because they show them selves as films, but what's the difference between mpg and mpeg? i've got som Mgp files, that are supposed to be videoes, but when i play them, they pley as if they were musicfiles, but they're not, and theres no music.. so is it because the files are distroyed? or dont i have the right program to run it? i've got winamp and windows mediaplayer, the latest version. please help me.. Go into Winamp properties and make it only play .mp3 files........ then change the properties of Windows Media player to play .mpg and .mpeg files......

as for the different between .mpeg and .mpg....... I don't THINK their is one.....

What
I would try out my first suggestion, if that doesn't work..... check the mpg files by going to the open menu in WMV (windows media viewer) and opening it manually. If that doesn't work.... your files might be CORRUPT.... what kind of icon is above the file?

and you said that you had some Mgp files? was that a typo? because if it was not.... they are not in the correct format and need to be RENAMED to .MpgMPG may be some kind of format that you require a specific codec for..

See this article for INFORMATION on MPEG.Don't quote me on this, but I think MPEG is the name of the group who created the standard for playing both videos and sound on a PC (and other digital formats) and MPG is the shortened version, used in the filenames ie "video.mpg". Go to Start > Settings > Folder Options, click on the View tab and de-select "Hide File Extensions for Known File TYPES" and you'll see what I mean.

As I say, it's just a reasoned guess. I'm pretty sure it's a similar situation with JPEG images - JPEG stands for Joint Photographic Expert Group, the folk who invented it, and JPG is the file extension because some OS's limit the length to just three letters/numbers.

So, basically, they're exactly the same thing, but totally different...

...

I'll get my coat...

Solve : GTA Vice City Unhandled exception?

Answer»

Hi,

I recently BOUGHT Vice City for the PC and after I installed it, I was pretty pissed off to find that every time I try to start a new game it would go to the first screen then stop with a window popping up in the background saying:

Unhandled Exception c0000005 at address 004103bd

I'm currently running a Athlon XP2600+ on XP Pro with 256mb of RAM and a 128mb Geforce4 440MX graphics card.

What on earth is this unhandled exception and how do i fix it?? I have all the RECOMMENDED hardware requirements the game asks for!!!!

Thanks.This may be related:

How to fix a fatal exception error

I suggest you contact Rockstar technical support or search for a dedicated GTA forum.typical winxp gta runs ok on winme...this may help>http://www.gtagaming.com/installmods.phpGTA 3 and GTA : Vice City work fine on Windows XP Home here, Merlin..Hi,

I've tried that Mod manager and that just to see if it would work but ALAS I still have the same PROBLEM. I've done MANY a search over the past few days and it seems like a common error. I received a 512mb stick of RAM today to take my total system RAM to 768mb so see if that helps at all when I get home later.

I really hope to get this game going. Another thing that I found strange though was that I tried to install the v1.1 patch but when you run it to change the .exe file in the Vice City folder it says that the gta-vc.exe file is invalid or something (I can't remember the correct word) and that the patch was not installed. Strange. I've got the original game disks and that. Hmmmmmm...........

Thanks for your help so far. Any more ideas?Visit a dedicated Vice City forum.

Solve : HDD activity monitor?

Answer»

I would like to know if there is a software program that will let me know when my hard disk and memory are being used. I would like this on my desk top, similar to what's on windows 7.

My COMPUTER is running XP PRO sp3. The light on the front of your pc will TELL you when the hd is active. Task Manager (performance tab) will give you INFO on memory usage.Quote from: dusterdriver on March 20, 2011, 03:58:55 AM

Aren't both of these "being used" the whole time the OS is running?

Well, the hard drive is continuously running but I don't that's what we mean by "activity" here. I think we can define hard drive activity to mean some read/write activity is taking place. So, that should normally not be happening all the time. I realize that I can look at mt CPU to see the flashing light, varying in intensity according to the activity. That's been the case since my 386/sx16
What I WANT is a ON SCREEN monitor so I don't have to get down under my desk and open the cabinet every time I wish to check. Also that doesn't address the volatile memory ( RAM ) monitor either.
Thanks for the help.Quote from: dusterdriver on March 21, 2011, 04:36:03 AM
