Solve : Fatial error of unknown cause, my computer cannot boot.? |
Answer» Well my computer, an Acer Aspire 3680 running Windows Vista Basic SP2 and a while back, it that's bad but how would *that* do *that*.If you must know, it is called 'delayed write failure'. Normally Windows must write some information to the hard drive before shutting down. But this information is often delayed for technical resins. If it fails, windows can not start up again. The failure may cause the a fatal change to a directory. You fix it by starting up the repair tool from the install disc.I got an acer recovery disk i got in the mail, i never used it because MSDOS and everything else refuses to access the C: drive period, i'll try it. Quote is there a dos command to copy and paste everything to the C: drive? If you need to copy your files, make sure its externally backup for the hard drive may be corrupted as in the repair loop symptoms. Us a Linux bootable disc to copy your data outside of windows. See this 2 page tutorial link on how to recover files from windows.OK new situation, i used a USB booter to boot Linux Lucid Puppy on my misfunctioning computer, and i found that a drive called sda2, is my C drive, i can access everything fine and dandy, but my computer normaly cannot. does this clear anything? can someone help me based on this information and the info above? When a failure happens in windows, some information is lost or mixed up. The Linux OS works with different code to rad the same stuff. Sometimes Linux will read files when Windows can not. Using Puppy, you should be able to copy important files to a USB stick or even an external HDD. I don't remember much about Vista. Maybe the repair disc can fix the problem. Maybe not. Try to get copies of all your personal stuff, unless you already have backups. Worse case the HDD will be formatted again and anew copy of Vista will be installed.Ok 9pm, I didn't get a install disk with the computer, i just got the computer, so i need to work around that, i'm looking into formating the harddrive and installing windows 7Are you telling me the computer was not licensed for Windows 7? If so, the moderator will close down this thread. Here is what you can do. Install a free copy of Linux. Whatever you like. Puppy works for me, others like Linux Mint. Of course, Ubuntu is very well SUPPORTED now. If Linux works well, your hardware might be alright. And you would consider installing windows again. At this time you can get an evaluation version of Windows 81. in either 32 or 64 bit. It is call the 'Enterprise' edition. You have to be a MSN member to get it. It is good for 90 days, at which time you either have to buy it or replace it with something. I have found in a few cases that a hard drive just can not be used again as a boot device. I am not sure why that happens. (I don't have the equipment or the energy to run tests.)Alright, that's what i'll do i guess, forget windows. |

Solve : Computer is having the BSOD and has been these past few months.? |
Answer» At around maybe June or July of this year my computer started to become slowly UNUSABLE until I had to wipe the whole hard drive because it couldn't even load past the windows loading screen. After the wipe it was fine until it happened again around 2 months LATER, then after that 1 month, and it seems to be cutting the time in half every time as it has only been 6 days and I am getting BSOD. The only problem that could fix this I can think of is that the hard drive when I re-install windows it says the disk will fail soon now but it didn't before. Wondering what I should do. Will update with info on the BSOD when PC RESTARTS from it. when I re-install windows it says the disk will fail soon Replace the hard drive |

Solve : Can't factory reset...? |
Answer» I'm in the process of trying to do a factory reset on my PC (an Acer w/ Windows 7 64bit) but during the process it just sort of stops. The screen displays a window which says it's "Installing Office 2010" but is STUCK on step 10 / 29. No matter how long I run the computer it remains stuck on this step. The only other message on screen simply informs me that my SOFTWARE is being installed and I shouldn't turn off the computer. Any assistance would be most appreciated.I'd contact Acer for a restore media set which is either a Disc set or a Flash drive to rebuild computer from. It sounds like the RECOVERY FILES are possibly corrupt and its failing in a permanent loop during the decompression phase of the reinstall back to factory. This happens if the restore DATA becomes corrupt or the drive becomes damaged for a portion of it where the important recover data is located.Thank you very much. I've contacted Acer. The disk is on the way. |

Solve : Is MS Office 2007 still any good?? |
Answer» Hi, Commercially licensed software has its advantages, too—it comes with all the benefits of the company behind the code. Microsoft relies on the sales of Office and other software applications to remain profitable, giving it a strong incentive to offer the features, support, and interface that will make its software attractive to users and competitive in the market. Microsoft has built a vast pool of talented developers, a mature platform, and polished user interfaces, and the success of Office has provided it with a large user- and support base. But the choice is always yours. Quote from: Geek-9pm on December 09, 2014, 01:31:45 PM MS support for the 2007 product has ended.Hmm, I have MS Office 2007 installed on a desktop system (Win 7) and my laptop (Win 8.1) and I still get updates for Office along with WINDOWS Updates almost every time Windows Updates OCCURS. In addition to minor updates, Microsoft releases special/major updates, i.e. "service packs", for MS office, just as they do for Windows. I suspect that edition of Office you found is an original release of Office 2007; in other words, it will not have any of the Service Pack (SP) updates. If you get the Office disc and install it, the Service Pack UPDATE(s) might appear in Windows Updates. If not, you can download any of the Service Packs, i.e. 1, 2, or 3, from http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=27838. The logical thing to do is go directly to SP3. By the way, the Publisher component works fine. |

Solve : Java broken - Will not even run "Verify Version"? |
Answer» Something is hanging around my Windows 7 system that has messed up Java. I cannot even run the "verify version" on the Java Web site. When it runs it gets an application error: "Class not found exception", jreverification.class I've seen other similar problems, but this is the simplest way to demonstrate the problem. I have removed all of Java that i can, ran JAVARA and jxpiinstall and that did not fix the problem. perhaps there is something in the Java class path, but I don't know how to find that or perhaps there is a access privilege problem to fix. I also searched this site for help. |

Solve : Privitize VPN? |
Answer» Recently I've been getting this warning saying," Do you want this program to make CHANGES to your COMPUTER?" and the program listed is Privitize VPN. I clicked yes and no, and NOTHING happens; it just closes and everything is fine, but I really want to get rid of it. I think my little sister tried to download some movie or something, but she said she cancelled downloading it. I'm not sure how to get rid of it. Can't find anything on my computer that says Privitize VPN. Please help. ThanksFor what it's worth when i tried to do research on "Privitize VPN" and then from the google search clicked on what appears to be the company web site my Avast virus software immediately stated a trojan infection attempt had been blocked. Therefore i would recommend that you run your virus protection program and after which also run Malwarebytes as well. If doing both doesn't remove the appearance of the window then i would suggest going over to the CH "virus/malware" forum and posting your issue there and the experts on that forum will be glad to assist you.truenorthThat program is the UAC (User Account Control) prompt. Clicking Yes allows the program listed to have nearly unlimited access to your computer -- this includes files, programs, and many windows system settings. In the future, if you see this message and don't have a clue what the program in question is, don't click Yes. If it is indeed a virus (and this one appears to be), clicking that Yes button makes it EASIER for the virus to do its nasty work Thanks you GUYS. Hopefully my virus protection software gets rid of itYou're already infected... |

Solve : Using Excel as a database? |
Answer» This is my first post, I am sorry if I have got it wrong. I need some help with EXCEL. I have a spreadsheet of 66 columns and about 400 rows. This is to identify species of timber ( the rows), from their attributes ( the columns). I tick the column that an attribute is present, then another column where an attribute of the same species is present. Up to 30 attributes may be present for one row, but scattered over the columns. Is there ant way of getting the software to identify the row to which all the ticked attributes apply?Excel has some database capabilities but you would be much better off importing your spreadsheet into Access which has much easier to use querying capabilities. Thanks for your suggestion. I have considered using Access but I am much less familiar with that and there will be a learning curve. I would also take a long time to ENTER all the data. However a friend of mine has come up with the solution, which is to use the Filters tool in Excel and that works. Many thanks to everyone who has read my post and considered it, especially to Thank strollin. As far as importing data into a database from excel, if you saved your data as a csv you could import it to access, but you would need to learn how to create the structure of the database layout for the data to be passed to it. Thanks for your suggestion. I have considered using Access but I am much less familiar with that and there will be a learning curve. I would also take a long time to enter all the data. However a friend of mine has come up with the solution, which is to use the Filters tool in Excel and that works. Many thanks to everyone who has read my post and considered it, especially to Thank strollin.Glad you got something working. Just remember that old saying that says "When the only tool you own is a HAMMER, everything looks like a nail." Aside from importing the data into Access, you could also link Access to the data in the Excel sheet and use the Access query engine to query the Excel data. Thanks very much again. Both the last two replies are helpful. I don't think I want to spend the time learning the SQL systems. However, the suggestion I link Access and then use its search function is great and seems to me well WORTH doing. That should help me to do what I want to do. Thank you everyone, I much appreciate it. I have taken the message about hammers and nails to heart. Quote from: DaveLembke on November 01, 2014, 03:51:09 PM If I was having to import the data to a database from excel I would create a csv file and then edit this csv file with instructions on how to place the data contained inside it into the database. Then once this is done, run it and it very quickly would populate the database values into the database.I would probably take a different approach. I would format the data in Excel with column headings for each column, if that was not already done, and open Access and import directly from Excel. In Access 2007, the External Data command is used for this. Select External Data and then select Excel, and proceed. |

Solve : Can't view right side of page in resized window? |

Solve : program file (x86) error? |
Answer» When I try to update my iTunes I get this Program File (x86) error sessage that won't allow me to up date iTunes. Any ideas on what I might do to fix this? What is the exact error message? And you might want to post on the Apple support forum as well. The exact message is "Program File(x86) contains invalid character" Quote The exact message is "Program File(x86) contains invalid characterSounds like maybe corruption with iTunes itself. I have had to in the past, with a drastic version difference with a laptop that was dug out of the closet and turned back on that needed an update after a bunch of updates happened in between the last time I used this laptop and that point that it was turned back on REPORT there was an update and error out when trying to apply, and I assumed it was because the update had to happen in a chronological order and due to it being like 2 or 3 years since it was last connected to the internet, there was no longer an update path that would go from a few versions back to the latest. And it was an issue where you COULDNT just jump from say a 4th version to a 7th version for example etc, but had I kept this laptop ACTIVE and updated it along the way it would have gone from 4, to 5, 6, and then 7 WITHOUT problems. *The numbers here do not indicate specific versions, its just to describe how a computer can lose the upgrade update path by falling behind of the times with a update system that might have to happen chronologically, otherwise uninstall old and reinstall new or try to find all the updates in between if they exist to patch it forward to make it compatible with the update that is current. My fix was to uninstall old version of iTunes and reinstall iTunes latest version on that laptop.I can't uninstall the older version 11.1, I've tried. If I'm mistaking, I get the same error message when I try to uninstall iTunes. Try to uninstall using Revo Uninstaller (http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html)Is that site safe?Yes. We're not GOING to have you do anything that isn't safe.LOL! Thanks. One last question, will my music and movies be lost when I uninstall iTunes? NoThank you very much! You're welcome. |

Solve : Looking for Win 7 64 bit MSE? |
Answer» I have tried to find a 64 bit VERSION of MSE without luck. I have a win 7 64 bit machine. I am looking for a good software program thats free. Anyone have any ideas? I have zero issues with MSE on 2 PC's running 24/7... I was running MSE for years with no infections myself, but hearing about this last year, I decided to jump ship from MSE to avoid the potential for infection since their product was not catching problems that other free AV's were catching. So I decided to move to AVG Free edition because I didnt want to take any chances. Below is a link to more info on why I LEFT MSE after years of using it. http://www.howtogeek.com/173291/goodbye-microsoft-security-essentials-microsoft-now-recommends-you-use-a-third-party-antivirus/Have ALWAYS been using, recommending MSE eversince and so far no issues. http://securitygarden.blogspot.com/2013/09/sensationalist-press-got-it-wrong.htmlI also use MSE on all my Win computers and have no issues. As far as where to get the 64-bit version, see this link: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5201. Once you hit "Download", it will give you the choice for 64 or 32 bit. |

Solve : Understanding MemTest86? |
Answer» Downloaded v5.1.0 but when I booted-up on the disc, it said v4.3.7. The MemTest website says older versions are automatically booted on systems that do not support UEFI (whatever that is, lol). Is that what happened to me? The older version does not boot-up to a configurable screen. It automatically starts running. It identified two CPU's which I assume reflects my dual quad processor. It wasn't clear to me that it was checking both CPU's because it indicated it was checking just one. I thought eventually it would start testing the second CPU but it did not even after a couple hours. So, with v4.3.7 and a dual quad processor, can I assume everything is ok if I have no errors after two hours of testing? Update: I found the configuration screen. I have to type "c" after the test starts and I can select various options. One is to test both CPU's in Round Robin mode. Don't understand what some of the options mean, EG should I enable or disable single PASS? |

Solve : Macrium Image Verification Process? |
Answer» How does this work? I ask because it would be convenient for me to verify the image on a different desktop. Let's say I image the C drive on Computer A and store it on an external HD. Can I now connect that external HD to Computer B to verify the image? I assume no because I am guessing verification involves comparing the image to the C drive, but I do not know. Thanks. No, of course not. Just verify the image at the time it is created. Sorry for being dense but I do not understand what you mean. Do you mean of course you must verify on the same computer? For me, I always immediately verify on my own machine. However, when I am doing a back-up image for my S-I-L, it is inconvenient so sit around for 30-45 mins waiting for verification. It would be much easier if I could just take the external HD with me and verify her image at my house.I always verify when i create the image... After all if verify fails the image is worthless...so why wait. Sometimes i do my images late at nite and just let it run...creation with verification...but that's me. Quote from: patio on October 18, 2014, 08:57:34 AM I always verify when i create the image... Yes, I know you must verify. That is not my question. I am not sure how to MAKE myself understandable on this. Once the image has been created and stored on an external HD, can I then connect that external HD to another PC which has the same Macrium software and verify that image? From the link I posted earlier, it appears that everything needed to do the verification is contained on the image so the C drive which was imaged is not involved or necessary. Maybe I will try it and see what happens. Thanks for your responses. Quote from: artbuc on October 18, 2014, 10:07:05 AM Once the image has been created and stored on an external HD, can I then connect that external HD to another PC which has the same Macrium software and verify that image?I believe so, using either the Macrium Reflect user interface or the command line tool called verify.exe which you can run from an Administrator command prompt, specifying an image file or set of files. As far as I can see you can run the tool either on the original PC where you created the image, or you could plug the external HD into another PC which has verify.exe. I do not know if the tool is part of a default Macrium install, but if it is not present (probably in the Macrium program folder) you can download it from their web site. It will return a report as follows: Verify Success The file contained no errors. Verify Failure The file could not be verified successfully. Try the verification process again using the Macrium Reflect user interface. This may give more information on the problem. Backup set is incomplete. At least one file may be missing This message is displayed if the --set command line switch is used and at least one other file required to restore this file cannot be opened and/or located in the same folder. Password Error The backup file is password protected and/or encrypted and the supplied password is not correct. F you do not already have it, get it here, and read the instructions: http://kb.macrium.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50176.aspx Quote from: Salmon Trout on October 18, 2014, 11:17:33 AM I believe so, using either the Macrium Reflect user interface or the command line tool called verify.exe which you can run from an Administrator command prompt, specifying an image file or set of files. From the link I posted earlier, it appears that everything needed to do the verification is contained on the image so the C drive which was imaged is not involved or necessary. Maybe I will try it and see what happens. Thanks for your responses. I really don't understand. If you verify it when it's created there is no need to "re-verify" it. Quote from: Allan on October 18, 2014, 11:29:52 AM I really don't understand. If you verify it when it's created there is no need to "re-verify" it. I understand. He is imaging his sister-in-law's computer at her house and then taking the external HD back to his house. He said that rather than wait the extra time that verification imposes he would find it convenient to do it later after he is back HOME. I agree that generally you might as well do it at image creation time, for one thing you are on the spot if there is a verification problem. If there was one, it could be caused by something on the PC being imaged, like bad RAM, or bad leads to the drive, or else corruption on the image storage medium. If you take the image away and get a failure on a different PC, you have more possibilities to sift, and you will now have to go back to the location of the imaged PC to investigate. Okay, thanks for the explanation ST. Personally, I'd still do it at the time of imaging - but so be it.I generally have my backup images on drives that are (semi) PERMANENTLY connected to my PC. I do disk imaging because I am aware that hard drives can fail. If I am imaging onto another hard drive then it follows that the backup drive might fail as well, so I have two backup locations - a NAS drive sitting on my home network, and also a large USB external drive. I make sure that no image is more than 3 days old, and I alternate the locations. I have a feeling that a USB drive is going to be most reliable if it is not often plugged and unplugged, and not transported around. Just my thoughts. Quote from: Salmon Trout on October 18, 2014, 11:49:35 AM I understand. Thanks ST.....you got it. Not interested in hanging around any longer than I absolutely have to. BTW, over the last 2–3 years I have imaged my HD DOZENS of times and never had a single verification issue. Answer» I have a charting software called Market Analyst, I want to be able to generate charts using free 3rd party data from Cooltraders. i have successfully downloaded end of day data and Market Analyst says the data is there and it is in a supported format,[Metastock] but I have been UNABLE to get a chart of the data, I think it may be that I have to get the data entered on a STOCK by stock basis but how to do It?
