Solve : Malwarebytes no longer free...but it is.?

Answer»
I have used this forum a few times to help me and friends.  I recently referred it again to someone and decided to go through clean up steps on my PC.  When I got to the Malwarebytes step, I could not FIND it on my PC and downloaded it again.  After installing, it announced that my free trial had expired and that I needed to buy the premium version.  I have been RUNNING it periodically for years.  Are you going to replace it with another free utility?

Thanks,
JimMalwareBytes most certainly DOES still have a free version
https://www.malwarebytes.org/lp/lp4/02_r/?gclid=CLT7z_uh4b8CFU4F7AodMy0AbQThis is the 4th time I have uninstalled it and downloaded.  First using the link in the Malware forum, then following Google Search and now your link.  I just got the same your trial has expired but this time, hit scan and it started to scan.  Clever way to get you to buy the annual subscription.  Screen shot below:

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]They give you a free trial period of full-time scanning. After the trial period has run out, you NEED to initiate the scans yourself.I remember now why I deleted it.  I get a pop up window every day saying the database is out of date and after 5 or 6 clicks to update now it finally went away. I just did the same thing. I counted two clicks. Scan Now, and Update Now. "Scan Now" told me it needed to update the database stuff, and I clicked Update Now. When it finished it started the scan.

As I recall the "Trial" stuff is either a checkbox in the installer or when you first launch it opting to initiate a free trial of their Premium version. And to correct whats been said there are no annoying popups sayin database is old...only when you invoke it for a scan...
I'm seriously considering changing the Topic title because everything stated is inaccurate at best.I agree  that it is still free.  The free trial expiration banner did throw me for a while until I noticed that I could still scan anyway.  I did delete it because I kept getting a pop up window that after repeated clicks to update the database would not go away.  This was not when I initiated a scan.  That did happen again after reinstalling and after 5 clicks went away and has not as of yet reappeared.

I was an IT professional for 25 years so this post is not from you average doesn't pay attention customer!  I got concerned because I recommend your anti malware service to folks and when one of your MAIN tools behaved differently then in the past I thought you all should know.

Thanks for what you do, it is a great service.Your more than Welcome...and Thanx to you for spreading the word...I Don't think anything about MBAM has changed ,except that it now has a ridiculous User-interface that makes it look completely scammy. They have always offered a premium version. However, what changed I believe is that it now defaults to a Premium trial, rather than the free version as it used to.

If anything the change to the UI is possibly of more concern. MBAM is now visually indistinguishable from the myriad of completely scam "Anti-malware" programs that are available. I didn't use it right away after they changed it myself and when I ran it the first time I thought I had contracted some trojan that was attempted to hijack MBAM in some way. That PAIRED with the pre-checked "Premium" option starts to edge MBAM into the 'scammy' territory, I think.content deleted by allan

What lucky customers - I can't think of a better person to be dealing with my computer than someone who seems happy to install pirated software on it...

We do not support or condone this here and this is certainly not a good first impression of you on this forum... Unlike you, most of us actually buy software if we want it rather than stealing it!

Have to agree BC. I was stumped when I first saw the new UI. It's extremely generic, corporate and unnecessarily designed to appease to new users. It looks like shocking software such as regedit and it's ilk.
With the added check box for premium services added to the installation process I fear it's just a matter of time before we see toolbars etc added. Quote

Solve : Something like Shelves for Windows?

Answer»

So I have two computers and an android tablet. On the android tablet I have an app called shelves and I love it. I am able to search for whatever movie or tv show and add them by clicking on the NAME. Like if I wanted to add all of 7th Heaven(11 season) I just type in 7th and search then click all the seasons I have. The down to this is there is really no good way to back it up or look the information up if I do not have the tablet with me. So I was wondering if there is something like that for Windows.

Here is a link to google play shelves https://play.google....miadzin.shelves

The latest Chrome build includes number of other improvements, most notably a visual cue to find tabs that are autoplaying video or audio, but the biggest feature for PC users is Chrome OS on Windows 8. Google doesn't call it that, of course. Instead, the company coyly describes the new feature as a "new look" for Windows 8 "Metro" mode—a description that completely ignores the similarities between the modern Chrome app and Chrome OS itself.

Solve : Excel 2010 won't fill down?

Answer»

I've got Excel 2010 on a Mac running Mavericks.
I have RECENT upgraded an Excel file from 2003 to 2010 and it works fine.  However, I wanted to make a change to the file and cannot get it to work.  Several odd things are happening.

1. When I TYPE in a function like "if" it does not change it to capitals though it does recognize it as the Formula Builder gives me a correct result.
2.  The formula does not place the result in the cell, but leaves the formula there, though the Builder gets the right result.
3.  The formula will not fill down.  Fill Down does not increment cell rows.  I have checked to see that "Calculate Automatically" is SET and that enable fill handle is set, though I have tried all other ways of filing down and they don't work either.
4.  FINALLY, the expression "=(address(row(),Column(m1),,,"Entry Form")" doesn't work, The Formula Builder shows all the correct values, i.e., 1,13,null,null,"Entry Form", but won't put an address in the cell.

I think these are all related, but have checked every OPTION I can think of or find and can't get it to work.  Since it doesn't work right after startup of Excel and on a brand new file, it must be some setting or something like that.
Help!!I recommend you to reinstall Excel 2010.

Solve : Opening downloads?

Answer»

I have Vista 7, Internet Explorer, Service Pack 1.
I can usually download programs, Ad-aware for instance, but then I can't open it. I'm asked how I want to open it and a box opens with options like Internet Explore, Windows Pictures and other programs,  PDF, etc. None of them work. Where do I find a program that lets me open these downloads? I used to be able to but no more. Thanks for any HELP you can give me. It depends on what format the files you are trying to open are saved in.  Often files DOWNLOADED from the internet are compressed in some manner and will have an extension such as .zip or .rar.  You need to find out what  compression UTILITY was used to compress the file then get that utility to uncompress the file.  For instance, a file that has the extension .zip can be uncompressed using the utility 7Zip or WinZip.  If you have Win 7 or Win 8 as your OS then you should be able to uncompress zip files from File Explorer.I took the liberty of moving your POST here...

Solve : Cannot Uninstall Software?

Answer»

Hello. I installed Rome: Total WAR, but (for some odd reason) the HDD that it was installed to, stopped working. And I cannot uninstall the game. When I try to reinstall/uninstall it, I get the ERROR message "There is not enough free space to perform the requested operation." with 40GB left on my primary HDD. I USED CCleaner and IOBit Uninstaller, clearing registry stuff, and still NOTHING. Anything else I can do?Are you running this HDD in compressed format to squeeze as much as possible on it?

This installer requires a drive that is uncompressed to install, OTHERWISE it will fail to install.Try with Revo Uninstall or Total Uninstalled..
Revo Uninstall Has option to force uninstalled and you can browe with Revoe to the path that you want to uninstall.

Solve : Which CD burning software is default on my computer??

Answer»

I have a medical MRI file on CD (file system CDFS) that has CD software already included on the disc (CD Viewer). Apparently it runs the software from the disc rather than installing it on my computer since I can't find CD Viewer in the All Programs list, nor on the Add/Remove Programs list. I need to make an exact copy of this disc. How do I do it? OS is Win 7 Hm Prem x-64. I don't know what software I have installed to do this if any. How can I find out which software to use or whether I need to download software?
Thanks in advance!

[recovering disk SPACE, attachment deleted by admin]I would say the easiest way to do this is to use a neat, tiny program called LC ISO Creator.  Unfortunately it seems the authors' website no longer exists and I'm struggling to find a LEGITIMATE download of it.
You could as an alternative use IMGBurn - http://www.imgburn.com/ - select "create image from disc" and that'll save an ISO file to your hard DRIVE, this can then be burned to another disc as an image to create an exact copy.

Hope this helps.I don't feel comfortable downloading the file from this website, but it is linked from the imgburn website (1ST mirror)

But I don't yet know which is best for me.  How about you?
Ah yes Explorer alternatives. Is it that time of year already? Every couple of years I TRY some of this type of program out, then I uninstall them all again. The only one I bothered keeping is Explorer++ because it can show folder sizes in Details view, and it has a wildcard filter tool. It doesn't see much use. Either they last about 2 minutes, because they are so annoying, or I give them a try until a crash or freeze occurs, or I find that they can't do something that Windows Explorer can. An issue with these programs is that they are usually the effort of one person, and they generally include all the geeky-nerd gee-whiz type features that a 15 year old working in his MOM's basement thinks are cool. Quite often what you get is really a beta - some of those in Geek-9PM's LISTS have not been developed for years. They tend to have features that I want like access to network drives or my Android phone "coming soon" (the guy wrote in 2012, and nothing but a deafening silence since then).

By the way, Geek, on the topic of fonts, if CAPITALS are the equivalent of SHOUTING, then your frequent use of italics is rather like whining in my ear, and equally annoying. Quote

Solve : Backed up computer. Now what? .WIM files??

Answer»

Hello all,
So I have my files backed up to a DVD + R.  I PLUGGED in hard drive to my friends laptop and did all of that, and will put hard drive back into original laptop and reformat with factory settings.   Problems:

1) They are all in .wim files.  So I can't tell what's what and if I have everything. How do I open or view these in their original formats?
2) I don't have all my files on the DVD's.  Some files it gives me a message saying: you must be running this on original administrator account.  But I can't. I'm using my friends laptop because original doesn't work.
3) How do I check if my "NOTES" were backed up too?  I am talking about the little DESKTOP notes you could add on windows 7.  I need those badly.

Thanks all!

There are many volunteers here that want to help you.
Do NOT format a drive until you are ready.
Please clarify what you want to do.
Are you trying to help a friend whose system failed?

The Windows file format you NAMED is explained here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Imaging_Format
Quote

...unlike  other disk image formats, a WIM file contains a set of files and associated filesystem metadata. However, unlike sector-based formats (such as ISO or VHD), WIM is file-based: The fundamental unit of information in a WIM is a file.
The primary advantages of being file-based is hardware independence and single-instance storage of a file referenced multiple times in the filesystem tree. Since the files are stored inside a single WIM file, the overhead of OPENING and closing many individual files is reduced. The cost of reading or writing many thousands of individual files on the local disk is negated by hardware and software-based disk caching as well as sequential reading and writing of the data.
What the article does not make clear is that system files from one computer may not work on another computer. Even if both computers had Windows 7 and both were HP laptops, there are important differences for different model numbers.
The purpose of the backup method is to help restore programs and data to the original computer.

At this point, I am not able to give you much help. Please indicate what kind of computer you have and what kind your friend has.
Hello,

Solve : How can I convert PDF to RTF??

Answer»

Let's say the PDF file is very simple.
Some photos, normal text and fonts. Nothing very fancy.
Now can I  convert said PDF into a RTF DOCUMENT. The current version of RTF.

The OFFICE suites I have do not have a conversion.
Is there something I can download?
Thanks.

I use Nitro PDF, it offers all sort of conversion options, but it's not free.

If the document is shorter than 70 pages you could try http://www.pdfonline.com/pdf-to-word-converter/. It gives you word file which can then be converted to RTF.miloske, thkanks. That lined worked good.
In the process I found I did not have a proper render for RTF. Only an old version of MS word properly read the RTF.

It seems WordPad does not work well for images inside RTF.
OPEN Office did not render CORRECTLY, but did show images.
So in the futures I will have t o use Word for RTF with  embedded images. The version of WordPad in Windows 8/8.1 seems to work fine with RTF files containing images.  But, I gather you're using an older version of Windows and WordPad.

Are you still using Windows XP?  It's what your forum profile shows.  Quote from: soybean on July 05, 2014, 09:35:34 AM

Solve : Windows 7 logon password?

Answer»

I have no idea why but I am now unable to logon to my windows 7 laptop.
I type in my password but the following message comes up:

The User Profile Service service failed the logon.
User profile can not be loaded.

How can I solve this?

ThanksBoot in safe mode.
Log into the Administrator.
Does that help any?Profile is corrupt from the sounds of it. You may have to perform a repair installation if the info geek provided doesnt help.

One other method that might solve this is if you had a Linux bootable disk with NTFS support to mount your HDD or SSD and you manually go in and delete this profile so that upon boot of Windows it has to create a new user profile since one does not exist.... *** I would copy this profile to an external drive PRIOR to deletion as for your pictures, videos, and all data in my documents as well as on the desktop will be gone when deleted and you will need to add these files back manually.

The safest method is a repair installation. If the safemode trick doesnt work. Thanks Geek.

I booted into Safe mode and it logged me in ok.
Should I delete the profiles and re-create them? It's F8 for safemode...tap repeatedly at powerup. Thanks Patio... any idea what I should do now?I booted into safe mode and logged in.
But then when I tried booting in normal mode I had the same problem.
What should I do once booted in safe mode?In safe mode you  create a new account with administrator level. You need that to repair the corrupt profile. This is documented on the MS website.
One you have the new user name, you reboot and select that user. Then go to the MS site and find the instructions.
This is for Windows 7.
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/fix-corrupted-user-profile
read the instructions CAREFULLY.  Also, now is a good time to set a restore point.
I've logged in with safe mode, gone to User Accounts, clicked on 'Manage another account' but nothing happens.
It won't let me create another account.
Any ideas?try enable your administrator account by typing secpol.msc then local policies click on administrator account then enable, restart & log into administrator account then try to create a account from that account...hope this helpcan you please explain how to do this in more detail please.
Where exactly do I type secpol.msc etcStart - RunAllan, I did that..
Clicked Start and then typed run in the area which says 'Search program's and files'
All that came up were 4 options
1. Run programs made for previous versions of Windows
2. View recommended actions to keep Windows running smoothly
3. Show which operating system your computer is running
4. View running processes with Task Manager
5. Review your computer's status and RESOLVE issues.

I also tried simply typing secpol.msc DIRECTLY into the white area but nothing happens.
I also tried typing cmd in the white area and when the command prompt came up I typed secpol.msc but I got a message 'is not recognised as an internal or external command.....'
you dont need to type run.. just type secpol.mscHwrddrn... Where exactly should I type run.
I typed in the white box after clicking start but a list came up (see previous POST)

Why are we selling Windows 7 PCs in a Windows 8 world? The answer is simple: choice. We like giving you the option to get the computer that’s exactly right for you.
If you want to make the most of a touchscreen and Windows 8.1, we have a complete line of computers, from desktops and all-in-ones to laptops and tablets.
If you still want to run Windows 7 on your computer, we can help with that, too. And you can instantly save ...

Stop listening to people tell you Windows 8 is what you want. The choice is still yours.
BTW: Windows 8 trial is still available.  Try before you buy.

It's just like when Vista came out and you could still buy computers running XP - This will however stop once MS stop selling licences for Windows 7.  This date is currently set at October 31, 2014 for all versions other than Windows 7 Professional for which a date is not yet decided (Source: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/lifecycle).

My big issue with this is thinking down the line - People will obviously jump into getting Windows 7 machines after their friends have claimed that Windows 8 is "bad" in some way - Down the line they will have to upgrade to something newer which will be even more difficult than moving onto 8.1 now as it will be even more different - Then we have another exact case of the issues that currently surround people still using XP, but this time it will be Windows 7.  I can already imagine the screams of "How dare Microsoft drop support for Windows 7, I gave them $99 for it 10 years ago, they should GIVE me support for it for as long as I want". Quote

As long as you want either Windows 7 or Windows 8 Standard, apparently. IF a company is going to go on about how they offer consumers a choice they really should actually give a real choice. What if I want Fedora Core? Why would MS wanna offer Fedora Core as an option ? ?
Makes no sense.

Right. This thread is about choices for Microsoft OS.
There are some major makers that do offer Linux to special customers. But that is another topic. (in 2012 HP invested ted money in Barcelona for Linux)

Right now the  choice for a Microsoft Intel Desktop  is Windows 7 or 8.

Microsoft doesn't manufacture PCs. HP is the one offering this, and DELL has offerings that include Linux.

I agree, it would make no sense for Microsoft to offer Fedora Core as an option. Microsoft, however, is not involved here. HP is the one offering the choice between Win8 and Win7. My point is HP saying "it's about giving a choice" is a lie, because it's still a case of "you can choose anything you want as long as it's one of these two specific options made by one software vendor" and I don't think I would call that a choice.
BC, I don't get want you are ranting about.
HP has long been a contributor to Linux and open source software.
HP said they offer a choice. A choice can be from a set of two or more possibilities. Nothing in HP's advertising says you must only use Microsoft on a HP. Many major makers offer Linux, but not always on the same models.
Here is a bit of information:

Myself, I have XP, Windows 7 and 8 on my computers. And I hare a large collection of Linux CDs I can install when I want to.
When I am ready to buy a new computer I might chose Dell. Or HP. Or maybe something else.
If I do it this year I can have a choice of Windows 7 or 8 if I want.
IMHO Microsoft with do a sp-2 of Windows 7 professional next year which will extend support for Windows 7 Professional.
But by then I might want to go with Windows 8. If I buy a touch screen desktop.
I have a choice.

Let me be more clear. HP's quote is:

"Why are we selling Windows 7 PCs in a Windows 8 world? The answer is simple: choice. We like giving you the option to get the computer that’s exactly right for you."

This is NOT what they are doing. Because they are only offering TWO options. Sure, two options are a choice, but it's not going to facilitate much in getting somebody the "computer that is exactly right for them". What grinds my gears here is the fact that they are saying that the reason they are providing Windows 7 is to make it possible for people to get the computer that is exactly right for you. Call it wordplay pedantry, but Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1 are not going to be the only two OS's required for every single possible customer to get the "computer exactly right for them" so it's disingenous. The reason they are offering Windows 7 is because that way people who are scared of Windows 8 will buy from them instead. They aren't providing it because they approve of providing choices, they are doing it because they like people to give them money and that was the way they decided to try to do it. If it was about "choice" they would be offering more than a OS provided from one Vendor.

They offer a choice between Windows 7 and Windows 8. They claim that this decision to provide the choice was motivated because they want to provide the choice to allow people to get the PC exactly right for them. But that isn't the reason. If it was, they would have provided a Linux distribution as one of the choices. The reason is really "We want to get people who are still afraid of Windows 8 to buy from us instead of the competition, and we don't want to sacrifice the ability to load the system down with USELESS crapware to subsidize it".

Solve : Icon Image Questions?

Answer»

While I know that there are software utilities out there to create your own icon images for applying to programs etc, I am not sure if there are any tools out there that allow for you to capture the icon image used to apply to a different file if that is even legal or not, for personal use and not for using it on something that is shared with others?

Or if there is a good web site out there that I can use that has free icon image's to apply to specific executable files to look through and download those images?

I downloaded a free application and it has what looks like a pile of colored books for its icon and thought that that icon would go well with an archive application I have instead of the boring default windows icon for executable that I am using, but not sure how I can copy that icon image to my program to give it that icon appearance.Resource Hacker can do that.

Most Icon Editors can extract the icons from a dll, exe, or ocx file as well.

If you want to change the icon used for the program itself you'll likely need Resource Hacker though. Icon Programs that do allow changing of executables after editing icons will usually lose other information from the program's resource table. Quote

Wasnt sure how the icons were bundled to the file. For all programs I have written, its always been whatever the default is. I figured people after they wrote their program compiled the program as an EXE and then used a icon utility to wrap icon image info to meta space of a file etc. This is a very grey area that I dont understand well and I am sure it shows in how I am wording all of this.     With other icons changed for programs and batch scripts etc, I generally used the ones available in the Windows\system32 location where there is a dll with a limited list of icon images to use such as a star or green arrow or a tree or CD ROM image or network image etc. Then applied one of those to the EXE or Batch file that I want to have that icon appearance on the desktop. I don't do much Icon Editing, Axialis Icon Workshop is what I use but it's not (usually ) free. It definitely allows reading icons from executables. I believe IcoFX, another Icon Editor program, which is free, also is able to read icons from executables and files.

Icons are part of the resources of a program. Typically compiled directly into the program. Most Development software let's you simply choose an icon and it get's compiled in. I've forgotten how it determines which icon to use for the Application icon (that is, what icon the program gets as a shortcut or in Windows EXPLORER). But I think it uses the first Icon resource in the file for that purpose.

The resources get compiled separately at a low level. if you have to use the base-level tools you would use RC.EXE, The Resource Compiler, and compile a Resource Script. This compiles into a .RES file that can be included as part of the build. Higher level (or, better) development tools typically just let you create a resource script and provide a UI environment to add, remove, edit, and change various resources (Strings, icons, etc). And then automatically includes the resources in the executable.

of course dll files are really the same format as executables, so they have their own resources. Windows includes a few resource-only dlls, one of which is specifically for icons, "moricons.dll".

To experiment and confirm what I mentioned above regarding the first icon being used as the application icon, you can rename moricons.dll to moricons.exe (of course, do this with a copy). And... boom! it changes to the MS-DOS icon. The .DLL icon is always the same because it is setup that way in the registry. (it points directly at a icon in shell32.dll) but .exe files are associated such that they use themselves as the source of their icon, and the extraction defaults to GRABBING the first icon. It's even possible to make all executable programs show the second icon in their resources, though this makes everything look really stupid.

Resource Hacker is immensely useful, it only works for 32-bit programs and has been abandoned, but still serves a good usage. You can pretty much grab any data you want and even change it inplace. I "customized" Visual Basic 6 by editing vb6.exe using Resource Hacker and was able to edit the References dialog to be larger to use more of my screen space. I also embedded a Styles manifest, which is basically an XML file that get's embedded with a specific name that XP and later know about to check that a program "knows" about new styling stuff. XP and later check that to see if they should let a program use THEMES. If the program doesn't have it is assumed it doesn't know and it doesn't get themed to make sure it doesn't break.

Thanks BC for the info with details on how it all comes together etc.

When I get home from work tonight I am gonna see what I can do.

Solve : Recommendation Needed: File/Folder Sharing?

Answer»

I am collaborating on a project with some folks, and I'd like to set up a shared drive (or even a folder with subfolders) . Only requirements are:
- Anyone with the password can have read/write privileges
- Files can be accessed whilst offline
- Need to share MS Office (Win/iOS), MS Project, JPG,PDF files

Pretty simple, RIGHT?

I'd love to set up Dropbox - it seems perfect. Trouble is, I already have a personal Dropbox account, so I can't set up a second one on my machine. (I'd have to use web access only, which is in conflict with my second requirement.) (So a fourth requirement would be "Must coexist and not share with existing Dropbox account"!)

I can't quite tell if Google Drive accomplishes all of that - I read the DESCRIPTIONS of sharing and collaborating one way, and then I read them in a totally opposite way. (eg, Do I have to earmark each file that I share? Do I have to be signed on (thus online) to open any files?)

I am also, for another project with another set of people, going  to need to install BOX. So, again, if that is a preferred alternative, I would need to be able to maintain two accounts on one machine.

I've also heard of TeamDrive, but don't know anyone who's used it.

So, I'll through it to y'all, CH Forum members, What's Your Recommendation?Google Drive is great - and the first 15Gb are free.I can't imagine CRASHING past 15GB.

Is the interface essentially a "shared folder" type - like a Network folder (or Dropbox)?

Thanks

(I noticed when I DL'ed Google Drive, it also DROPPED shortcuts for Google Docs, Google Slides, and Google Sheets... Not nice, Google.)

OK, it appears that I can't share the entire folder with others, I have to individually pick-and-choose which files?

So is the solution then, create a "dummy" Google Account, where everyone on the team shares credentials, and then they can get into and out of the same Google Drive ("GD", heh heh) folder?

Which means if they need to get to their individual GMails or anything like that, they'd need to sign out and sign back in each time... Correct?

Solve : Can you set up an automatic daily email containing content from a folder??

Answer»

Howdy to all who graciously help on the forum because Google can't turn anything up.

I am looking for an application, a software download, a work around, a tweaking of the settings or SOMEthing to do this task.

(using OS Maverick) I have a folder that has LOTS of quotes, inspiration tidbits, pictures and I want to automatically rotate 5-10 of these images, words or phrases, on a daily basis viewable via my email inbox. There are some really impactful words to live by in that folder, but they don't help if they sit in a file to be read every couple years.

Let me know if there is anything that NEEDS to be clarified. Thank you to any who can break through my dead end.  Just realized after typing this all up, that you stated:
Quote

(using OS Maverick)

If you have a Windows XP or later computer available to run as a email creation server off to the side, the info below applies as a method to pull this off. The Mac computer can then open the e-mails created from the Windows computer just as you open other e-mails from PEOPLE who send you e-mail from Windows or Linux systems ETC.

This would be so much easier if you made a website to visit when in need of looking at this info. As FAR as what I am reading you want to spam yourself with this info on a rotation if I read this correctly. While this can be done, its far more involved than a simple website with a java script that reads in the day or uses a random generator for content to display and applies a picture etc to the web page etc.

For this to work via e-mail for FREE you would need to do some programming because I dont know of any other way around this as for I dont believe you will find a software on the market that is an install and leave computer RUNNING to e-mail you to another computer etc.

Do you have any programming experience and if so what languages and to what level?

Best Option below for Windows computer e-mail creation only:

The most simplest method I can come up with would cost you about $69 by use of this software here: http://www.jitbit.com/macro-recorder/purchase/

Basically you would have to have a computer running 24/7 just for this purpose of sending yourself e-mail. You then create a macro that constructs the content you want to be included in the e-mail running through all the motions of what would normally be necessary to send an e-mail with attachments etc, and send it to yourself. Then end the macro recording and compile this to an EXE. Then save this EXE such as Monday.EXE, and then create other macros that e-mail with attachments for the other days of the week etc, and save them here in this same folder. So you now have 7 EXE's Then you create 7 individual scheduled tasks to windows scheduled tasks to trigger to run the EXE of this macro at say 1am. At 1am the schedule task runs and with you maybe sleeping your computer comes to life with mouse pointer moving on its own and logging in to your e-mail and doing everything that you originally did, and then sending the e-mail. Then when you open your e-mail later that day you have an e-mail to yourself to open.

Now you probably would want to not have every day of the week predictable. And to do this you would want to randomlze it. So you could if you know how to program start a random e-mail lottery program that picks out a random e-mail to send and so you can rename the e-mail macros that are 7 days of the week to 1.exe, 2.exe, 3.exe, and so on for as many different ones you want. So say you have a pool of 10 different e-mail makers now and the random number from 1 to 10 is 4, it will run the 4th one at 1am, and then the next day its 6, and then the next day its 1, and then the next day 9, and so on and unpredictable.

I really like this macro recorder because its very very handy for making something happen that would otherwise be complex and many programming hours to pull off a far easier task to pull off in little time with some creativity for redundant tasks.

Here is the software that is pretty easy to use. You need to have the Pro version for $69 in order to make EXE's, and you would need to have a 2nd computer that runs 24/7 that sends the e-mails out or if run on this computer if its a laptop that you take around with you, your computer would have to be on to send the e-mail to itself at say 1am etc.

http://www.jitbit.com/macro-recorder/Happy Fourth of July to you DaveLembke

Thank you for your in depth response. Sorry you went down the Windows trail for a bit.  My programming skills at the moment are nil and I am only familiar with the names of the programing languages. It's a skill that I intend to develop in the future.

That macro recorder program looks really nifty, though my idea is not enough of a problem to invest $$$ into.

I suppose I can just set my self periodic calendar reminders to go look at those files.

I have to set up a universal price list for my office, which cannot be easily modified without permission. It will be a relatively simple price list, but there's GOING to be around TEN to twenty thousand items over a dozen brands.

I'm thinking of USING the office's Dropbox account as a distribution channel.

Is there a better way to do this? Or will this work fine?

THANKS for any advice. We have LOTS in our office, we have them as locked Excel spreadsheets kept on a server. This works fine for staff on site. Is remote access definitely required?

Solve : Windows Live Mail pictures not included when sending?

Answer»

I rarely get INWARD email where the pictures do not open in Windows Live Mail, but when sending (or rather, forwarding) emails with pictures in them - I get a message to say "One or more of the pictures in this message could not be found. When you send this message, these pictures will not be included. As you sure you want to send this message"?

How can I avoid this happening - is it a setting? How large are the picture files? I have seen this before with large images that are like 25MB etc. This PARTICULAR email I'm talking about has one picture imbedded (its a SORT of joke email) - it wont let me save it anywhere.  I shouldn't think it would be big.   But sometimes  I get jokes with about 6 cartoon type pics, and when I forward it to someone else, it gives me the message (as above)

Quote

"One or more of the pictures in this message could not be found. When you send this message, these pictures will not be included. As you sure you want to send this message"?

It is  ok if I insert and ATTACHMENT - never happens then, only with jokes or cartoon pics in emails.

JudySave the pics you want to send in a folder....Then you can forward them or include them in any new email message. It isn't worth it PATIO - they were only jokes I was forwarding on, not photos.

But thanks anyway.

Solve : Can I Upgrade My laptop??

Answer»

Hello FELLOW friends, I have a question for you. I have a:

Toshiba Satellite L745 LAPTOP
Intel Core i3-2310m CPU 2.10 GHz
64 bit - WINDOWS 7
RAM 4.00 GB
Intel HD Graphics Family

I was wondering if I am able to install a new Graphics Card (If that is possible).
And if I'm able which would be the best for my Laptop for optimal or moderate gaming experience.
Unfortunately you cannot upgrade a video card in a laptop other than on perhaps a couple of very specific MACHINES (which yours is not ONE of) and even then the choice is strictly limited.

If you are looking to game on it your only real option I'm afraid would be to replace the entire machine, you could always sell your current one for a bit of money to put towards a new one.
Okay, thank you for your help!

Solve : AppLocale not working anymore?

Answer»

OK, this is probably going to be a long story, but PLEASE BEAR with me.

So,  a few months ago I started playing/reading a JAPANESE Visual Novel that did not need Japanese Locale. Sometime  after that, I tried to install another VN, but I couldn't do it even if I used AppLocale (a little program that lets you run an application with a specific locale without having to change your whole computer to that locale), so I had to change my system locale to Japanese. This is where the problems begin.

When I tried to continue reading the first VN again, it would crash immediately, and I found out that it was a registry issue caused by changing the locale. So I fixed that, and it ran, but the text would overlap, which means it was UNREADABLE. I thought that maybe it was the Japanese locale that was causing that, so I tried running it with Chinese Simplified locale and it worked PERFECTLY (AppLocale only lets you choose Chinese, Japanese or Korean), which was great.

But the day after that (today), when I try to run it with Chinese locale, it doesn't run at all. No error message, nothing. I tried running it with Korean Locale but it's the same thing. What could have happened? I didn't install or change anything between then and now.

BTW, I have Windows XP SP3 (old, I know). Any other information that you feel might be relevant I will gladly give.

Thank you in advance.

Solve : Problem with programs when not connected to the internet?

Answer»

When i'm not connected to the internet, every program and file that i try to open takes a very long time to finally open and sometimes wont open at all.
This even happens in programs that dont even need internet connection to work properly. I ask here because i really dont know where to start looking for the cause.
I have thought about reinstalling Windows but since i dont have a CD and the key propably wont work because Windows was preinstalled when i bought this computer.

Here is my PC's specifications:

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (6.1, build 7601)
Manufacturer: Acer
Model: Predator G3610
BIOS: Date: 10.31.2011 Version: 04.06.04
CPU: Intel Core i7-2600 3.4GHz (8 CPUs)
RAM: 10240MB (10GB)
DirectX 11
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 Ti

Here is list of programs currently installed on my system: http://pastebin.com/YkTYA7UK Exported with CCleaner Quote

I have thought about reinstalling Windows but since i dont have a CD and the key propably wont work because Windows was preinstalled when i bought this computer.

This statement sounds fishy.....

This system is an Acer Predator G3610, and should have a product key label on it that has the genuine Windows 7 product key.

Are you the original owner of this computer? If you are the original owner the key on the computer will allow activation without any problems as long as it is not flagged as pirated by microsoft activation servers.

If not the original owner, has this product key label been removed by prior owner ? ( to be used for a duplicate installation of the same key on more than 1 computer maybe )

** The Good news is that if you have owned this system since it was brand NEW from purchase unopended box from a retail outlet, you have nothing to worry about. However if you bought this computer second hand and the prior owner skoffed the key off of it for their own system and sold this system to you, it means that you will run into activation issues which may require you to buy a new copy of Windows 7 64-bit to have an unused ( unpirated key ). If this system was bought new and you know that your key has not been stolen or misused but is damaged to where it cant be read, you can use a program like Magic Jellybean to read your key according to the systems INSTALL. Then create a restore set of this system if you dont already have a restore set created, and then install clean and use the key just as reported by Magic Jellybean and you should be ok.Yes i have owned this PC since it was brand new. There is a sticker on the case with the key on it. I did some research on the net and came to the conclusion that the key will work. I have DECIDED to reinstall windows and see if that fixes my problems. Thanks From your list of installs i suspect a nearly full HDD...which dramatically affects performance...I forgot to add my HDDs to the spec list: 1TB drive for Windows and another 1TB for data and Steam games. But i reinstalled windows now and now everything is smooth!  Quote

Solve : Google Drive Level Permission.?

Answer»

Hi all!

I was hoping that you COULD help us with an internet cloud issue. Some of our company's documents are on Google drive, for the SAKE of easy collaboration. We intend to work with some part-timers, and we would like the part-timers to have access to CERTAIN files on the drive, but not all of the files.

We were wondering if there was a way we could set the permission at different levels. For example: Those with level 1 permission can only view basic work documents. Those with level 2 permission can view the previously mentioned documents and advanced work documents.. Those with level 3 permission can view the previously mentioned documents and the admin folder. Those with level 4 permission can view all folders and docs. This is just an example, it doesn't have to be 4.

Basically, we want to know if there is a ways to RESTRICTS access for documents on Google drive, without having to go through the documents and changing the permissions for each Google doc one by one.

If google drive can't do this, are there any other method or software?

Thank you,
JeffI was involved with a similar situation where a freelance employee needed access to some files, but not everything. What we ended up doing is creating another Google Drive account and placing the files that they needed access to into that alternate cloud space. Then there was isolation as to what they could access and the files that they have no right VIEWING etc.

Solve : Firewall to prompt when program tries to connect to IP ??

Answer»

Hi,
I've been looking for a firewall with specific capabilities for a long time and so far I haven't been able to find one.
I have ProgramA that is not a popular program and does not have a digital signature. It is designed to connect to internet.I'm looking for a way to control whether to allow ProgramA to connect to a specific IP or not.For example, it tries to connect to 1.1.1.1 IP today.I want to allow it and make a rule to PERMANENTLY allow connection to that particular IP.If it tries to connect to 2.2.2.2 then I want to get a popup box again to allow/deny/create a rule for that specific IP.And so on...
None of the major firewall makers that I've tried offers this flexibility.I've tried Kaspersky firewall,TinyFirewall,OnlineArmor,PersonalFirewall,Windows Firewall,Comodo.
The way they work is when the program tries to connect to NET, you either allow it or not but you can't control connection to specific addresses. With Kaspersky it was possible to switch the Application Control to "manual" mode but then it would ask so many non-internet related questions(popups about allowing the exe to run, allowing the GUI to open, allowing it to access registry e.t.c) that it's not practical to use it.
Do you know any firewall that offers that flexibility?
Thanks !

Do you expect to get it free?

Thanks for the link.
I can't install Norton or Sunbelt(Vipre) because they require installation of the internet security suite but I already have an AV so I don't know how to do in that case.YouTube video reviews don't seem to show any advanced firewall settings.Outpost seemed to have some nice features on video even THOUGH not the ones that I'm looking for so I tried to install it for testing purposes but it crashed the PC then didn't properly uninstall itself so now when I try to reinstall it it says I have to completely uninstall the previous installation.Rebooted, removed junk files, all leftover files but still won't install.I don't really want to pay $ for a product like that to be honest.

The other ones were either tested or they require proprietary hardware or a different OS.If anyone uses Norton or Vipre, could you please give me a hint whether your firewall has the features I'm looking for ?I have also tried PC Tools long time ago and Zoner firewall yesterday.
Paid or free, doesn't matter as long as it's priced reasonable for a home user.
Any suggestions?
Before you install anything, set a restore point and reboot. To fully remove all bits of a program, use  one of the free uninstallers.

Solve : Word document empty?

Answer»

I had a document in Word 2003 which I saved to desktop - now when I open the said document, it is blank - yet it had information on it when it was saved.   Is there any way I can retrieve this document?

JudyActually, I did a search for *.DOC and have discovered  not one of my Word documents have anything in them.    I changed the default from  Kingsoft writer
to Windows 3 one or two days ago.  I went into Kingsoft writer, and opened up a few documents - they all opened OK.  When I tried to open the original missing document, it said something about disable macros - so I did, and the document came back.    Can any one tell me what/why it happened, and what do macros do?macros store a sequence of commands and let you run a macro to save time. For example, I have a macro in Word 2007 which executes Paste | Paste Special | Unformatted TEXT, by merely using keyboard shortcut to run the macro or by adding a shortcut icon to the Quick Access Toolbar and linking it to the macro.  I have on icon on the Quick Access Toolbar to run the macro.  So, by clicking on the icon, I accomplish Paste | Paste Special | Unformatted in one click instead of 3 which would be NECESSARY if I were to go through the Paste | Paste Special | Unformatted sequence.

And, by the way, having the macro mentioned above in Word does not affect my opening and viewing of Word files.  So, I do not know what is going on in your case. Quote

And, by the way, having the macro mentioned above in Word does not affect my opening and viewing of Word files.  So, I do not know what is going on in your case.
I don't know what happened either, but I got a message to SAY something like disabling macros, and now I cannot open new documents or pdf docs.

Could someone please show me how (in easy steps) - because I can't understand M/Softs "help".     I am very FAMILIAR with a lot of things in computers, but macros have me stumped.PDF files should open in a PDF reader.  Are you saying you can't open PDF files in a PDF reader (Adobe Reader or whatever PDF reader you have installed)?  The pdf files open ok - I was talking about word docs.   They are set to open in Word 2003, but open up as an empty document.
This is because I thought I was doing the right thing when I was prompted to disable the macros.

If I save the docs. I can then "Open with" and choose Kingsoft Writer, where they open OK, but I shouldnt have to do this.  I prefer Word 2003 anyway. For macros to exist in Word, they have to be created by someone using Word.  I gather you did not knowingly create any macros since you knew nothing about them.  Does anyone else who might have created a macro use your computer?

Deleting macros might be a solution.  See http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word-help/delete-macros-HP005189419.aspxSorry I've just noted this message, I am on laptop at the moment, so which do what you say on my desktop tomorrow.

I am the only one who uses the desktop - I did answer a question where I was given the choice of disabling or abling - the message just popped up - so I clicked on "disable" thinking that was what I had to do.I went into tools macro - and it was blank.

It says Macros in (and the option selected) was All active templates and documents)
Under that is Macro created 11/6/2014 by owner

.... I'm thinking that is where the error lies - should the option be normal.dot )global temmplates)I'm thinking Kingsoft may be the culprit here...So what do I do?  lol      Delete Kingsoft?Check there for your missing docs... Quote

As I said in an earlier message (above)

There are no missing documents as such.   It's only if I open docs in Office 2003 that the site  is blank, but  if I open "with" Kingsoft, the documents are there.Patio, as I said - I CAN access the docs in Kingsoft, but I am really wanting to fix up this macro problem.

My preference is for Word 2003.Ok - I'm marking it solved.

I would like to monitor CPU temperature on my old HP desktop running Win7. Just read a post that said thermal paste can dry out on old PC's which raised my curiosity. What 3rd party app do you folks recommend?    Did you KNOW you can send a final document as a PDF attachment that everyone will be able to open and view, but which people who need to will also be able to open and edit? The document that can do this magic is CALLED a “Hybrid PDF”, and anyone can make one using open source software. LibreOffice (and related packages like OpenOffice.org) have been able to make these editable PDFs for quite some time. A Hybrid PDF is a normal PDF file that any PDF reader can display, but with the added benefit that the original source document is also embedded in the file. Any suitably advanced office suite, such as LibreOffice, is able to retrieve the source and allow you to edit it.
For more information, just download the Open Office documentation and read it.

Solve : Windows 7 Pro Right Click Issue?

Answer»

For some time now I've been having a problem when I go into Documents and Right Click on a FILE or Folder in order to either, Copy, Delete, or Cut it.  I will Right Click to bring up the Menu that includes those choices and it takes sometimes over a MINUTE for the Menu to show up.  I've had computers since 1994 and I've never had this problem before.  I have a Lenovo Desktop Idea Center, Windows 7 PRO, and I've installed the Home and Student version of MICROSOFT Office.  I can Right Click in other areas and the Menu will pop up immediately.  For instance if I wanted to copy a paragraph from a Word Document, it will work just fine, but will not load immediately when I Right Click on a File or Folder.  I can't say exactly when this problem started but it is a real pain when I want to Copy FILES or Folders to my external hard drive to back them up.  Has anyone out there had this problem and how did you address it?  Thank you.....

Sounds like the winzip method here.... winzip had a free trial that many people used beyond the trial terms.

While it would probably work to use the trial to create a restore image, use of applying the restore image beyond say the 14 days would require  .... cant state the trick here     ... but if no orphan REGISTRY entries are left behind from it to prevent what I cant state here, it could be used for free once or twice a year as a system recovery back to image is needed etc. I havent tried this trick with true image that I cant state here to know if it protects itself against such tricks.

Solve : Best programs to unzip files.?

Answer»

I did USE some of these, but don't remember what OPTIONS they have.
Which of these programs should I use. Are they all the same?

7-Zip.
PeaZip.
IZArc.
WinZip.

Which have command options that let me do a whole cirectory of Zio files.
Whaich have command option to RENAME the output file.

Thanks

I went from years of Pkunzip (DOS to Windows 98 SE ), to Winzip ( 98SE to Vista ) and then moved on to 7-zip when a friend suggested it with Windows 7. I was probably one of the few people who actually paid for a license of Winzip back in the day when so many were using an extended use trial of it.

Both Winzip and 7-zip support directory/folder compression with all contents contained in it. Both also give options for output path of the decompressed files/folders although I rarely used that as for I usually just decompressed the contents to the same location of which the .zip file was located.

I prefer 7-zip because its FREE and works well. I haven't found any problems with it yet. Its able to open files ZIPPED under other zip utilities etc. Quote from: DaveLembke on May 06, 2014, 05:30:10 PM

Thanks. I will go with 7-Zip.
I use PowerArchiver, myself. In the early days of DOS I used the ARC compression utility, then along came PKARC with better performance and better compression.  ARC then sued PKARC for name infringement so PKARC became PKZIP (PK = Phil Katz, the dev) and the .zip extension was used instead of the .arc extension.  Not long after, ARC withered and died.

I used PKZIP for quite a few years but then migrated to Winzip and now use 7-zip.  I believe 7-zip will do all that you need and, as pointed out by DaveLembke, it's FREE.I've used 7-zip for as long as I can remember, never had a PROBLEM with it.  It's lightweight, free and does everything I've asked of it.I've used 7-zip for a while now and have had absolutely no problems. I can't tell you much about the other programs, but 7-zip has served me well so far. Thanks all.  I went with 7-zip.

Solve : Microsoft Office 2003 task pane formating?

Answer»

Hi, I have a problem in office 2003. In the creating new document tab in task pane the hyperlinks have changed color in green instead of blue and I don't know how to reverse it.
1. I did an office repair,
2. re-install office,
3. changed the style in hyperlinks.  But nothing happened.

and that happen only in the creating new document tab in task pane of all office programms.

Does anyone know any other solution?

Thnx in advance.Sounds like an orphan registry key that is not reinitialized when office is uninstalled and reinstalled. But generally you can go in and change the color to whatever you want similar to seen here: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/powerpoint-help/demo-change-the-color-of-hyperlink-text-HA010243430.aspx

To get rid of the issue you can MANUALLY uninstall office 2003 and then search for the orphan registry key for office 2003 and remove it, and then reinstall clean..... or perform a clean installation of the OS and Office 2003 in which it would definately be the default of blue because no orphan data would carry back over from previous install.Thank you for your response. I will try first to change the color and if that won't work I will try to delete the registry. I will write the RESULTS. Thanx again.Just wanted to mention that you cant just delete the registry, it has to remain for Windows to function. One tool that has worked well for me in the past tracking down Orphan Registry entries to remove is Karens Registry Pruner, but it can be a dangerous tool in the wrong hands. One wrong move and you could have a system that no longer operates properly. So be careful. This tool is good at POINTING out orphan entries, so if you find an Office 2003 Orphan entry then that may fix this.

http://www.karenware.com/powertools/ptpruner.asp

Quote

Clean up your Registry's SharedDLLs key. Orphaned entries can cause install and uninstall programs to misbehave. And can even trigger bogus Registry Corrupted error messages. The program can also removed "ghosts", entries in the Control Panel's Add/Remove Programs LIST that remain even after a program has been uninstalled.

Note: This tool was CREATED many years ago and has worked for me with older OS. I havent tested it with 64-bit OS yet, and unfortunately Karen passed away a few years ago due to diabetes complications. Her brother is still keeping her site and programs live for people to use, but her projects are frozen from updates and eventually they will no longer be compatible with future OS's.

Ditto.I am answering your PM here.  Do not PM for support, you won't get it.

Don't use them because they don't work and they usually make a mess of the computer.Registry utilities cause problems, they don't cure them. The best registry utilities are benign and do absolutely nothing. The worst of them can leave your system useless.

Good AdviceI voted with other, which is to manually remove unnecessary services etc to remove wasted resources and clock cycles. Did this a while back with a Windows XP computer using BlackViper's info here: http://www.blackviper.com/service-configurations/black-vipers-windows-xp-x86-32-bit-service-pack-3-service-configurations/ And then created a ghost image of this system after going through this as a clean optimized baseline for my prior gaming rig.

After all, a clean installation of Windows is what services etc, Microsoft Believes you need, and there are features you probably dont need that are enabled that can be dumped from automatic service start to optimize a system.

Newer systems will probably not see much of a gain from removing unnecessary common Windows services, but the single-core Athlon XP 2800+ 2.08Ghz I was running saw a good gain removing unnecessary services and remving the bloatware that came with the Compaq from factory. I transformed the XP installation from clutter of unneeded services and programs to as clean and optimized as can be without removing important services etc. I also saw a great gain in performance by running this system without Norton Antivirus on it. I installed a removable HD bay and made an 80GB optimized drive and then used the sytem recovery CD's to make a 40GB drive to build as factory with antivirus running etc which didnt need to be optimized, but needed to be secure. Would swap hard drives and boot system up for whatever purpose I needed, 40GB for slow and secure, or 80GB for fast and at risk only if I downloaded anything without testing it first from the 40GB build. *Never got infected and the system ran nice and fast on that 80GB that was clean as could be.

A long time ago I used Norton System Works and it caused problems on my systems registry. Since then if I want to optimize my system, I will manually do it, and create a registry backup copy first before making any large changes that are not as simple as flipping a 1 to a 0 etc.I was SEVERELY dissapointed when MS REMOVED hardware profiles feature after XP...
It was the most efficient WAY of testing DIFFERENT service setups.

But since the Topic isn't really about services i'll add my 2 cents and state i wouldn't recommend any of the products listed above...Period.Thankyou very much for the advices. By the way I did not really use any pc tuneups (i just installed them), but it is good to hear all this advices. Where can this "Delete" program be found?  Just curious. No matter where it can be found i'd bet a cheeseburger Tuesday that remnants of those apps will still be lurking afterwards...The "Delete" program is a application installed with the antivirus 360computer guard. But it is a application in China and somehow it cannot work in other countries maybe because of connection. But one of it's function"delete" is still USEABLE so i took it out from the app. It is pretty useful as you can delete a bunch of files(for example, all zip files, and ,any more deleting functions)I've never heard of an app that wouldn't work depending on what country you are in...nor would i trust it.
