Solve : Getting Back to Normal Mode Completely?

Answer» This has to do with computer mode and since I'm still not comp savvy I put it here.

Problem: My comp was in left in Safe Mode by a tech who was disconnected during a remote control. I had forgotten how to exit Safe Mode so I just restarted my computer, then shut it down completely.

My problem now:  My computer WORKS like it's in Normal Mode but it has a negative look to the toolbar (meaning black is white and white should be black.)  I tried a couple of steps in search to remedy but neither worked. One said to reboot and while doing so hit the F8 Key. It didn't work because the screen stayed up only a second each time I tried.

I also used the Windows method of START, MSCONFIG; ENTER; BOOT TAB on SYSTEM CONFIGURING MENU; then UNCHECKING SAFE MODE (it wasn't checked); OK; CLOSE; REBOOT.

There is no Normal Mode prompt in there. Go figure!

Would someone please advise me on how to get my computer to look normal.  Thanks!
Sounds like High Contrast is enabled!
(I am running Windows 8.1 so Windows 7 instructions will be in "" )
1: Right click the Start button "Left click the Start button"
2: Click (Control Panel)
3: Click (Appearance and Personalization)
4: Click (Personalization)
5: Click on one of the non-High Contrast backgroundsThank you for your reply. My background screen on the home page is Blues Like sky blue. Are you saying If I change it to one darker that should solve my problem?

Ok let me further say. Not onlly is the black white and the white black in the toolbar but when a window is opened it has like a border. Like it's pastyed onto a sheet of cardboard from elem school. You know! Also, WHENEVER I click to open utility windows, like a window that has OPEN, OPEN IN A NEW WINDOW, REFRESH, PROPERTIES etc... they have sections in them when before they didn't.

If I go to SAFE MODE shouldn't there be a click in there to RETURN to NORMAL MODE.  I have no idea why Window left that command out of the BOOT TAB.

Anyway, my comp ia using Windows Vista SP2 Home Premium.  I hstitate to ask for the steps to go to Safe Mode by my self. I read a lot of threads in search about Vista users who went to SM and had a problem getting back.

Any instructions for 7 work with Vista, because they are nearly alike Are you talking about logon screen?
I am talking WAY different.
I'm talking about themes!I'm talking about my working page with the top and bottom toolbars. the desktop is fine, it's this page that displays everything.  SEE before, a window would have just a straight razor's edge. Now they look like paper pasted to a bulletin board. They all have small border.

I wanted to screenshot this to show what I mean. I hope it comes in.

I did ss only once so... The OP could create a new user account and sign into it.
This is a diagnostic to see if the issue is superficial or is a system error.
The new user should be normal. If not, something is very wrong.I didn't make a new act but I did change into one of my others. Same results.  What does Very Wrong mean Geek-9pmHere are two snap shots.

First  is after setting the display to high contrast. Windows 7
Second One is of a new user screen in Windows 7.

Does that look like what you have?

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]How do I get a screenshot to post here?  You're showing the startup pages. To me they're fine, it's my work page that's screwed.

I saw how to get into Safe Mode but upon getting out, what should I click... I found this help online for someone else trying to exit Safe Mode.

"
It should have the option to boot windows normally, safe mode, safe mode with networking and safe mode with CMD prompt.  "

If Vista shows me those options which should I take. Wait...that looks like someone trying to enter safe mode not exit.
Crap!   Tired my migraine is thumping me. Thanks guys...

Solve : Getting rid of an iso?

Answer»

Hello! How can I get rid of the windows iso that automatically appears when I start the computer ?

THANK you!

[RECOVERING disk space, attachment deleted by admin]Remove the DVD from the drive and re-boot...I do not have a physical dvd in the drive. I keep ejecting it, but whenever I start my computer is still there. I know, I am not that tech savvy ...Where did you get the ISO from?
What the OP has might be a kind of Malware.
Otherwise, somebody did a virtual drive, which is part of Windows 7.
EDIT: My bad.. Yoou have to get it fro a download.
http://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-releases-tool-to-mount-isos-for-windows-xp-vista-and-7
Microsoft releases tool to mount .ISOs for Windows XP, Vista and 7

Did the OP use that tool?

It's a Windows 8 install disk image. It looks like a torrented file. To the OP: if you got this file by Bit Torrent, it is illegal and may contain malware.

Solve : Video fullscreen issue?

Answer»

I have an HP Pavilion g7 NOTEBOOK PC I bought last year.  I upgraded to Windows 8.1 a couple of months ago and I have had problems EVER since.  The issue I am trying to solve now concerns online videos.  When I am watching videos streamed online in full screen mode, it will pull out of full screen without me touching the keys or mice.  I have noticed sometimes the bar at the top of the browser screen flashes, as though another program is trying to open.  I just took it in to a computer REPAIR shop and they said they removed several viruses.  They advised me to download avast and malwarebytes, and I did.  Then I started a video, and about seven minutes in it popped out of full screen.  I never used to have this issue.  I would like to know what could be causing this, and if there is a setting I could find that would stop a new window from taking a video out of full screen.  It happens on many websites, and I have tried using Internet EXPLORER and Google Chrome.Do you have HP's software tools such as HP Utility Center, HP Support Assistant, etc. installed?  I believe this software is normally installed on all new HP computers.  So, you should have it unless you removed it.

I have an HP Pavilion g6 Notebook PC and I've found their software to be helpful in updating device drivers.  Perhaps driver updates, such as the driver for your Display Adapter, might be helpful in resolving your issue. I do have HP Support Assistant.  I have tried reinstalling drivers, reinstalling all programs, even took it into a repair shop.  The shop removed viruses, but I still have the issue.  I'm wondering whether accidentally touching the touchpad might be the cause of this.  Do you know how to disable the touchpad?  Try disabling it and see whether the problem continues.

Solve : Characters In DOS or Windows?

Answer»

I use Lotus under DOS and Excel under windows what I WANT to KNOW is there any way of making the characters displayed on the Lotus under Dos to display the same way in Excel? These characters are from the same spreadsheet.

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]θϕ÷

I couldn't find anything exactly like the second one but it looks like it might be a serif-style lower-case Phi, so I went with that.I presume you mean, can it be done without manually changing characters in one file or the other?  I'm not absolutely sure but I doubt it can be done.

Why not TRANSITION all your spreadsheet files to Excel and be done with your very OLD VERSION of Lotus?

Solve : Stereo mix refusing to cooperate!?

Answer»

I want to be able to watch videos in a skype call and have the other person hear the audio. I noticed that my computer didn't have stereo mix, so I installed the latest Realtek audio DRIVER from the Asus website.

So now I have stereo mix, but I absolutely cannot get it to WORK. The ONLY way it works, is if I unplug my headphones, which doesn't work for me. I need to use those. But, it DOES work when I do that. I have USB headphones so I'm not using the headphone JACKS. I saw a fix regarding the headphone jacks but obviously that didn't work for me. Even though I just downloaded it, I uninstalled the audio driver then reinstalled - still won't work.

The green bar beside the stereo mix icon just doesn't go up and down. Nothing is muted, levels are raised. I know all of my settings are correct, in theory, because of it working when I unplug my headphones.

Help! You need to know that programs like Skype change behavior when the headphones  in. This is by design. With headphones in the software runs the thing ia a special half duplex mode. In other words, it is not the same as a telephone conversation. In   half duplex you are not supposed to have background music or noise of kids talking.

The solution is to
- not use headphones.
Or
-  not use a laptop.
Desktops can have more sound options.

Sorry I don't have a better answer. Full duplex conversion is only AVAILABLE on a regular land-line telephone.

Some programs other than Skype will LET both users wear headphones and enjoy ** full duplex. That is the only way to enjoy  background sounds.

A duplex communication system is a point-to-point system composed of two connected parties or devices that can communicate with one another in both directions, simultaneously. An example of a duplex device is a telephone. The people at both ends of a telephone call can speak at the same time and simultaneously each be heard by the other at the same time

Alright. I am on a desktop computer. And my skype buddy is on his desktop computer, and he was able to let me hear his audio. It did mute his voice but that's fine. His pc is brand new, so he didn't have anything special installed, just Realtek audio drivers like me. I googled my problem for a couple hours last night and plenty of people got this to work, but my stereo mix is just not working for me :/I think my issue is that I have a USB headset. It DOES have headphone and mic jacks, but the reason I bought a USB headset was because the jacks don't work on my pc, for whatever reason. It's a custom made pc and I asked the guy who made it, but we couldn't figure out what was wrong. He had a mic that worked, but mine simply wouldn't (although it did work on my laptop, so the headset was fine)....

So I NEED the USB headset. I suppose my skype buddies worked because he has a headset with the jacks, not a USB headset?

Stereo mix works just fine for me, IF I unplug my headset and just play through my speakers. But that doesn't work for me, because I have a roommate, and I don't like listening through my speakers if I'm right in front of my computer. At least, it LOOKS like it works fine, although the volume levels aren't normal, they only go up about 2 bars, in accordance with my speaker volume?

Solve : Burn PDFs?

Answer»

HI
I have burnt to a disc using Ashampoo burning studio 14 several PDFs. I am using windows 7. They open up fine and can be read. I then put it  in another computer which uses windows xp and they read fine. No problem. But when I gave the disc to a friend to test on his work computer he insists that it does not work. I sent him an PDF from the disc by email and that was fine but I have now burnt 3 discs and each ONE does not work on his system. He deal s with PDFs regularly due to his work and they open with out a problem. Please can anyone advise what is wrong.

Thank you.
RodMost LIKELY his optical drive then since i'm sure he has PROPER PDF readers as you stated if he works with them all the time.

I've seen CD/DVD drives from different PC's do this...rare...but it happens.I AGREE with PATIO.  Since the disks can be read fine in your machine and the XP machine but not in your friend's work machine the odds are that the drive in that machine is the issue.  One other thing to ask, is your friend sure the drive in the work machine a DVD drive?  It might be only a CD drive.

Solve : Do I Need to Keep Donwloaded Files?

Answer»

I always wondered about this. When I download/install 3rd party software, eg WinZip, the download files are SAVED in my download folder in Win7. Is there any reason to keep these saved files? I do not need the HD space but just don't like keeping unnecessary stuff on my PC. Thanks.No. Most down load files will continue to be available.
Example, Open Office might be about 200 MB. So deleting the installation download can save some space.  It will continue to be around for years. But you could just burn it to a CD-R if you like to save things.

However, THEE is no proof that keeping them hurts anything. They are not active.
My personal solution is to keep significant stuff  on a 8 GB SD card.

As for disk space., the big space HOGS are the AVI movies. These can take from 600 MB to 18000 MB each. But now that I use Netflix , I have no need to keep them.So I pruned my collection down and now have some empty  hard drives I can use for other projects.
Short answer, no.

The only reason to keep them would be if you think you would be re-installing them for some reason.  I have a number of computers so I download INSTALLERS like that to a network share.  That way when I want to install that application on another computer, I don't need to download it again.  This can save lots of time if it's a large file.

Thanks! Quote from: strollin on March 07, 2014, 10:54:39 AM

Given that by that time, there will probably be a newer version, why bother? I used to keep things, now I don't.

Solve : Java 7 ver 51 not installing properly?

Answer»

Hello,

I tried several times to install Java fo IE7, Firefox and CHROME, but I always get the Java sanddial turning for a Long time, then ClassNotFoundException. I tried to REINSTALL the earlier Version 45 but no success and I dont have a win7 restore point that I can use because this issue also HAPPENED on certain Websites with the previous ver45. I even CLEARED the files and registry with piriform CCleaner.

The Java verify Website says "Java installed and recognized correctly" but the grey box below doesnt show any Animation!? I also tried deactivating my Avast antirus scan without any improvement, but not the Windows Firewall yet. I also tried the offline Version.

Any ideas how I can get Java to work in a browser? In the "Internet Options" there are also no Java tickboxes to select under the advanced TAB, which I think was previously available?

Thanks, Burton

p.s. I also ran a virusscan with Avast! but nothing found.I dont know why, but I just restarted by browser and it worked.

Problem 4: It says something like that:

Solve : Pictures cut in half when saved??

Answer»

Alright, I have a problem with saving images from the Internet to my 'my images' folder. This never happened before a few days ago. Whenever I save images, they are cut in half. I have no idea how or why, but they simply do. It never happens if I save images from for instance Google Images, but only images that I save directly from a website, and only when they're not clickable. That is, images that can for example be enlarged in my browser are always cut in half, but none others are.

Below is a typical example of such a picture. To get it like it is now, I just searched for 'circle' on Google Images, picked ONE of the images, and it LOOKED like this (before it was saved).

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/0e/Ski_trail_rating_symbol-green_circle.svg

Obviously, the green circular area is supposed to be just that - circular. Which it is not. And it's not supposed to look like this, which is what it looks like when saved on my computer:

My computer is an Acer Aspire E1-572, and it has - like I said - never had this problem before. Thank you so much for Your help! I really need it..The image is too large. Or it is not a format that can be represented as BMP , JPG, GIF or PNG formats.

green_circle.svg is in the SVG format.

Look here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Green_circle.svg
But how can it be too large? Here's a screenshot of what I see in my 'my images' folder:

[img=http://s27.postimg.org/a9q0gddof/What_ISee.jpg]

The image I have 'selected' in my screenshot is supposed to be a symmetrical national flag. However, like I said a part of it is missing. Instead of the whole image like I found it on the Internet, there is just a white border on the bottom and the right, but I guess you can see that yourself . The green circle is obviously the one you sent me a link to, which was SVG. The flag, however, is a PNG. It's clear that more of the image could have been displayed, but it just isn't - so how can it be too big? Is there no way to get around this? Also, thanks for your help so far OK, I was wrong. Solve : Two oporating systems one PC advice?

Answer»

Hello folks, I'm new on this forum.

I've recently picked and ordered all the parts I'll need for my first gaming PC build, but I feel I MIGHT need to get another older oporating system in order to run those older PC GAMES I'd like to play sometime. I believe Windows 8 backwards compatibility mode isn't always reliable, and I may go as far back as DOS games.

I just wanted some advice on what other oporating system I may need to make sure I have less problems running older games.

This is a new build so I don't think I have to worry about backing up any files and such. Thanks in advance. Windows XP is suitable for running most old DOS games. The advantage of XP over olde versions of Windows is that XP is still being supported. But that will end soon.

Using a suitable tool, break your large hard drive into partitions My personal prefer ace is two primary partitions s and  a extended partition.(About 20GB for XP, and maybe 80 GB for Windows 8.) The extended can have two or more logical drives. These can be used for projects, data, videos and backup. Actually, you can even install an OS on a logical drive. You have choices; but avoid TWO  OS inside a single partition!
Install Windows xp first. get it to work good, then install Windows 8.
Nota bene:
Once you install Windows 8, doing a fresh install of Windows XP is not a viable option.* So get  the XP right and make a backup.

* not impossible -- but don't ask.  Quote from: Geek-9pm on January 05, 2014, 02:57:52 PM

First of all Geek -- USE A SPELL CHECKER

Second, there is no limit to the number of logical drives you can create (other than letters in the alphabet)Patio Allan ,   corrections made.  Fantastic Geek, thanks a lot for your help, much appreciated. I forgot to ask before I get Windows XP. Seeing as its to help with older games, should I go for the 32 bit version?

My Windows 8 will be in 64 bit. I think installing XP is a bad idea. First of all, Microsoft is about to stop supporting it. Second, Windows 7 has an XP compatibility mode that works just fine. If I were you I'd install the 32 bit version of W7.Hm I see, what happens when Microsoft stops supporting XP, just that no content will be created for it anymore? I will only be using XP for running older PC games, I'll use Windows 8 for the newer ones. Most popular DOS games now have Windows Ports. Some examples being, Doom and Duke Nukem 3D, Rise of the triad, Commander Keen, and Quake.
For other games, you can use something like DOSBox, which is pretty much a DOS Emulator.

Some folks will stop me here, and say "But I don't want to emulate DOS to play DOS games".

Well, if that's the case, you can't really use XP either. XP, like any NT-based Windows OS, runs DOS programs using virtualization. DOSBox is just a much better approximation and is built to different standards- NTVDM (the DOS Emulator XP and 32-bit Vista and 7 uses) is built for compatibility with boring old business DOS programs. DOSBox is built for compatibility with DOS Games. Because DOSBox is a software emulator rather than a virtualizer, it also works on 64-bit Windows. Not to mention allowing a wider variety of games and programs to work successfully on XP.

Add in the fact that XP support is being dropped and it's 13 years old and you are setting yourself up for problems from both fronts. Newer games will not run as well on a 32-bit platform, and DOS compatibility is mediocre at best, almost entirely because of our current hardware. DOS games under XP will be virtualized which means they will be talking to your hardware, in a manner of speaking. The problem being that modern graphics cards aren't exactly tested to see how well they wrun in 640x480 with 256 colours or other lower resolution graphics modes that games use. Some simply don't work at all with those video modes or display garbled screens. Since DOSBox is a full software emulator, there is no virtualization, the GAME will interact with the devices the emulator uses Windows Graphics capabilities (OpenGL and Direct3D) to display what is happening. So even if your latest and greatest graphics card doesn't work with VGA's undocumented 320x240 Video mode that is used by some games, DOSBox does work with it.

DOSbox, I'll remember that thanks, but what about games that use Oporating systems after DOS, can Windows 8 handle those ok or should I still consider XP? Very large list of games that play in DOS Box

DOSBox is a DOS-emulator that uses the SDL-library which makes DOSBox very easy to port to different platforms. DOSBox has already been ported to many different platforms, such as Windows, BeOS, Linux, MacOS X...

DOSBox also emulates CPU:286/386 realmode/protected mode, Directory FileSystem/XMS/EMS, Tandy/Hercules/CGA/EGA/VGA/VESA graphics, a SoundBlaster/Gravis ULTRA Sound card for excellent sound compatibility with older games...

You can "re-live" the good old days with the help of DOSBox, it can run plenty of the old classics that don't run on your new computer!

DOSBox is totally free of charge and OpenSource.

DOSbox, I'll remember that thanks, but what about games that use Oporating systems after DOS, can Windows 8 handle those ok or should I still consider XP?

Most of the older games from Win98 or so work fine on my system (Win7 x64)- The Need For Speed (the first one) works in DOSBox; Need for Speed IISE works (and so does the non SE version). the Software rendering has some glitches but those are present with XP as well. I resolved them by using a Glide Wrapper, which let's me play NFS2 using it's Glide Version which also looks better and is a higher resolution. Need for Speed High Stakes (I believe it's known as "road Challenge" in the UK and Europe) Works as well, but I 'enhanced it" with some aftermarket additions which fix some of the issues. Of note? Those same issues occured with XP.

Age of Empires had some graphical issues running under Windows 7 x64, but those were due to a bug in Windows Explorer; terminating Explorer before launching the game (I used a batch file) fixes it. Additionally, the bug in Explorer was fixed with Windows 8, so the game actually runs better under Windows 8. AOE2 has this same problem, but AOE2 was also re-released as AOE2 HD (which is actually QUITE a bit better overall).

Some of the Early C&C games suffer form the same bug in Explorer, but that's an easy fix (and, again, fixed in Windows 8). I haven't encountered a game that I haven't been able to get to work yet.

EDIT: disabled smileysBrilliant, a slight glitch now and then don't seem so bad. I think I'm all set then, thanks all for your help again.

Solve : Save a .MOV file????

Answer»

Hey there. I use a DRIFT HD camera and had a motorcycle accident last week and the camera hit the FLOOR hard and managed to disconnect the battery terminals so the power just died and the MOV wasn't finalized. The file has the time and date and a file SIZE of 0 bytes. I have tried a MOV file header file fixer to try and fix it but it doesn't recognize the file type. Is there a way to fix the file or to be able to read the file frame by frame or is there no hope at all?
Cheers!
DeadQuick edit, I have checked the amount of space on the SD CARD it is stored on and it does have roughly the size the file is in used space so there must be some data there...

Solve : Malwarebytes + Avast antivirus vs. Norton antivirus which pakage is better ??

Answer» Malwarebytes + Avast antivirus vs. Norton antivirus which package is better and why?

I often think that Norton has earned reputation by giving world class security in term of various services like Norton antivirus, Identity Theft, Norton identity etc. but i wonder why people recommend me to go for free Avast antivirus free addition + Malwarebytes free addition instead of Norton.

Are you able to give me the following answer below---

1. Norton has auto protect feature over Avast then why Avast is better?
2. should avast be used with Malwarebytes? there will not be any conflict running two antivirus app?

3. Reasons why Avast is better than Norton?
4. how Malwarebyte is different from any other antivirus scanner.?
5. Which package of antivirus + anti malware is better.?

I am running Norton antivirus over 3 year till now on my windows 7 pc but today i have run Malwarebytes for the first time on my system and seen the result
that there were 23 objects detected by Malwarebytes.

I am wondering why my latest updated Norton antivirus did not do such job as did by Malwarebytes. I suspects that Norton antivirus does not work well.

Please give me suggestions what should i choose?

First, one point needs to be clearly stated.  Malwarebytes is not an antivirus program; it is an anti-malware program.  And, Malwarebytes, at least the free version, does not run in the background.  So, that fact that Malwarebytes found undesirable objects does not mean that Norton isn't doing its job well.

Quote
i wonder why people recommend me to go for free Avast antivirus free addition + Malwarebytes free addition instead of Norton.
Most likely, the reason is simply that they just prefer to AVOID paying for antivirus protection if they can GET free protection.  And, regarding the use of Malwarebytes free edition with avast, I, like many other users, would use Malwarebytes in combination with any antivirus program.  Again, Malwarebytes is not, per se, an antivirus program; Malwarebytes and other malware detection/removal programs such SuperAnti-Spyware or Spyware Blaster can, and should, be used in conjunction with antivirus software, regardless of what antivirus software you use.

NOTE: Keep in mind free versions of any program are usually limited to personal, i.e. non-business use; using them on computers used for business purposes is a violation of the software license agreement.

I have avast Antivirus Free and Malwarebytes free edition on my laptop.  The laptop came with Norton Internet Security and I thought Norton was quite good.  But, when the trial PERIOD expired, I elected to remove Norton and install the free version of avast, which I was already using on a desktop system.  Again, the choice is a matter of preference.  You generally do get some FEATURES with paid versions of software that are not available in free versions and some users, like me, feel comfortable using the free version.  So, since you like Norton, I see no reason to suggest switching to some other antivirus, whether its free or not. Thanks for your response,

As you said you have also used Norton antivirus on your system. Kindly figure out  that what is difference between Avast and Norton both antivirus.

Would you like to explain about the features of Avast which is better than Norton and also let me know
why Norton recognizes some files as bad even though they are not bed and used by many user on the PLANET like Adw cleaner.

any response shall be appreciated. Quote

I can't comment on details of differences because I only used Norton for that trial period which ended around the end of April or beginning of May, as I recall, and I can't recall enough details about it to comment on differences.

Same response as above.  A Google search on comparison of antivirus software will yield numerous reviews.  But, since their results vary widely, I am skeptical of the value of some of them.  For a thorough list of antivirus software and comparison of some main features, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_antivirus_software

When an antivirus program does that, it's called a "false positive".  Norton is certainly not the only antivirus program that occasionally finds a false positive.  I suggest you post that question at https://community.norton.com/.  Or perhaps someone here will can comment.  You can probably open some screen in your Norton control panel and tell Norton not to treat Adw cleaner as an infection.  You can probably confirm this feature by visiting the Norton community forum. Great advice and I can only add that Norton, among others like AVG are resource hogs. What is the model of your equipment, connection speed, and how much memory (RAM) is it equipped with? That make's a difference when selecting an anti-virus provider. I run several computers, my main being an HP laptop with 4Gb memory, and Windows Security Essentials and it does fine for me. Note - that I watch out for suspicious temptations for what I click on when surfing the internet,
I installed Malwarebytes (lifetime protection) 2007, and SuperAntiSpyware (lifetime protection) 2009 on my machine and I've had no issues with any virus, malware, spyware issues since.
Also I would like too confirm the great advice already given here - Only run 1 antivirus software program and also only run 1 firewall software too.
I hope you get it going well. You've come to the right place for excellent help.

yea you are right but you are running more than one protection. can you tell me how you handle them on your system?
completely different programs for one system do not conflict each other? No, these do not conflict. I have automatic updates and scans set for different times on both. Multiple different malware, spyware software can be used, and each of these (Malwarebytes - SuperAntiSpyware) target some different types of issues. The problem with running multiple protection software only exist with 'anti-virus' software and 'firewall' protection. So be sure your antivirus sofware is the only antivirus software installed on your system. If you have 2 antivirus programs then un-install 1 of them, and likewise with firewall protection.
I hope this helps. Happy new year!

With regard to Norton, I can say it was not a resource hog when I had it on my HP laptop (Win 8, 4GB RAM).  By "resource hog', we mean a program that slows a computer.  Norton seems to have come full circle on this issue.  I used it way back in 2002 and it was not a resource hog then.  But in some later years, it became bloated and got a reputation for being a resource hog.  But, Norton (parent company is Symantec) recognized the issue and seems to have done a good job of resolving it.  I noticed no resource usage issue with my laptop. That's good to know. I haven't used Nortom (Symantec) in several years. I may try this protection again. I was very happy with the protection provided years ago which was way better than MSE other than the resourses it consumed. So I may go try it again.
 Thanks for the info soybean!

Solve : How can I ge rid of Linux mint.?

Answer»

I had a friend install Linux mint on my machine as an alternative OS.  HOWEVER, I FIND that I am not doing well with it at all.      It is not compatible with dozens of documents that i have stored in the past with Word and Excel  and I need to get rid of Linux.  My friend, who installed it, is not available.  I want ot get back to where I only have one OS, Windows 7.  Do I need to reformat my drive C?   Help please. See http://lifehacker.com/how-to-uninstall-windows-or-linux-after-dual-booting-508710422 for a guide to removing a Linux OS from a dual boot system. Do you still consider him a friend ? ?
Soybeans link should solve your issues...
If not consider a WIPE and a clean install at worst...SOYBEAN:  Well I followed all of the instructions up to the point where it says "insert your windows recovery disk (or recovery USB drive) and boot from it."  At that point  the machine will not boot.   Each time I try to boot, I get the message "error: no such partition"     "group rescue" ..
I have tried repeatedly pressing F2, F8. F10 and F12 each time with the same result.   The only disk that I havae is the original Windows 7 installation disk and a Windows 7 repair disk.  But the machine won't boot to either of these.    I guess I deleted too man partitions,, (two) but what do I do now??

PATIO;  That's a chuckle.    Fortunately (or not) he sold his house and moved away so I guess I won't be seeing him anymore..  All joking aside...do you still have a Win7 DVD ? ?
If so i would run a startup repair...Linux normally breaks the Win bootloader which is what this sounds like...
Don't panic...your OS and data are probably still intact. PATIO:  Thanks for the comeback,,  Yes I still have my original Windows 7 Installation DVD but the machine won't boot with the DVD in the reader. ?     Set CD/DVD to Boot 1st...

After following the steps press F10 to "save changes and exit".....the PC will re-boot with the new settings.
Then you will see a top SCREEN prompt "Press any key to boot to CD"....hit a key.
It will now boot from the win7 DVD...
From that menu select Repair My Computer...select Startup Repair and let it run to completion...
Do NOT interrupt it...even if it seems to hang...it'll re-boot after completion and you should be good to go.PATIO:  Thank you.   Well I  went thru the procedure as you said until it tried to restart.  Then the machine shuts down and tries to restart but the screen says "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD. . . .
But it does not respond when a key is pressed.    Should I go back to the BIOS an change the boot order to the hard drive, or what?   What exactly does this Win7 DVD say on it ? ?
PATIO:  It says:
Licensed for distribution only with new PC         64 bit software
For product support contact the manufacturer of your PC
Do not lend or make illegal copies.
DVD  (Key code no.)
WINDOWS 7
Home Premium.

I  bought the software from Newegg when I assembled my computer about 4 years ago.
Well judging by the info it should boot properly and do what we need...
Do you have another Optical drive you can try ? ?PATIO:   Yes I do.  will try that tomorrow.  Have to cut it off for tonight.  Thank you for all your time and efforts.  Will get bacak to you.  JIM   No problem...
I wish you success.
Let us know.PATIO:  Well I have three optical readers and I tried all three with the same result..  If I hit a key quickly enough it tries to do something but finally displays a blinking cursor (not a  prompt) in  the upper right corner.    This also happens if I set the boot drive back to the original hard drive.         If I take too long to press a key, it responds with the same message : "error: no such partition"     "grub rescue".     What do you think?  Do you think that I need to completely reinstall Windows 7?    I have all of my important data on a separate hard drive which I can disconnect before I do.    If your important data is backed up i would say yes...by all means.
The only proper way to run Win and Linux to me is seperate HDD's...there are many here who may chime in and state it can be done but i screwed enuff around with it to come to my conclusion...

That being said i would check the Win7 install just to make sure you haven't FORGOT to back up anything important...then i'd proceed with the Nuke and clean install...

My printer is HP Photosmart all-in-one C4400 printer/scanner/copier, PC is HP 6715B running Vista professional X86.
I'm TRYING to print some simple text FLYERS I CONCIEVED via Notepad and I have it all just like I want, but I don't want that page # (Page 1) printed at the bottom.
What to do?
As always, thanks for any help!
MikeEasy...

With notepad open...

File ---> Page Setup... ---> Make Header and Footer Fields blank and SELECT OK ( *Note you didnt want page#, but I am assuming you might not want the header info on there too to have a clean print. If you want the header then just blank out the Footer to remove the instruction to add page number. )

Now you will have a clean print without header name and page number at bottom.

Thanks #1 on the Google hit is: http://www.fortiumtech.com/patronus_dvd-anti-rip-copy-protection.aspx?gclid=CNvSur-lrrsCFbA7MgodnXUAvQ

I have never worked with protecting media from easy duplication, I have only worked with writing programs requiring activation keys to function and those too are not IMMUNE to cracking with DETERMINED software crackers.

Biggest problem is that this DVD copy protection still does not protect from someone USING a program such as FRAPS to capture the audio/video of this and having a copy of this, or AV capture device over HDMI etc to make a copy!

Otherwise, look at Western DIGITAL or Seagate web sites.

The most frequent cause of computer failures is operator error.

Solve : How can I get PDFlite to work?

Answer»

I am running Windows 7, when I call up a word file and then GO to "Control P" then scroll down to "print to PDFlite" it is suppose to convert the word file to PDF.  However when I try to do that, i get          "GPL Ghostscript 9.09:***  Could not open temporary file".       What  is that all about and how do I work around it?          I have DELETED my old PDFlite and downloaded a later version.  Same result.  I am trying to convert a dozen documents to PDF so that I can email them to people who don't have word.  I also would like to combine all 12 documents into one PDF file.   Any suggestions?  Or am I just FANNING the breeze?   I believe this problem occurs when the PDFwrite engine cannot write files into the Windows temp/tmp folder. Do the obvious things: e.g. check that it exists and is writeable, that there is sufficent free space on the drive where it is located,  and try deleting any temporary lock files (created by the PDFwrite engine) in that folder and reboot.

Salmon Trout:  Thank you - thank you - thank you.   You are just great and I am grateful.   I didn't have the slightest idea of what you were talking about but I went ahead and found C:\Windows\Temp and there were a lot of temp docs (not files) but they were all empty.  So I deleted them all and crated a C:\windows\temp\temp file and it worked perfectly.  You guys aerea always pulling my fat out of the fire.  Thanks again to you and all you colleagues.   JIM    Will PDFlite combine all 12 documents into one PDF file?  If not, I believe other tools are available to do this. I didn't try to combine them with PDFlite.  After I had converted all of them I used a program called "PDFmerge" to combine them.  Worked fine.  I will checkout PDFlite to see if it will do that.Btw, which version of office are you using? Office 2007 has a free addon from microsoft which  allows you to SAVE docs to pdf. And office 2010 has that feature inbuilt. Solve : Unable to Open .NEF files.?

Answer»

Hi,
Because of a memory card ERROR, i was unable to ACCESS my raw(.nef) and Jpeg files. i have managed to recover them using stellar and other software.
But, the files don't open anywhere. I have tried - stellar, irfanview, viewfx, picasa, PS6 and other small softwares. No luck.

Error message - " could not complete your request because its not the right kind of document " (PS6) AND " Decode Error. Not a valid RAW file " (Irfanview)

Please help Perhaps the following reference will help: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/fileextensions/f/nef-file.htmIt is possible that the files which were supposedly "recovered" are in fact corrupted. When the file system on a flash device such as a memory card is damaged, then important information can get damaged or destroyed. Often some information remains - the starting location and the file size. Most recovery programs just look at the starting location and the size of the file and SIMPLY copied that many clusters in a ROW from the start. This works fine if the files are stored in a single, contiguous block (i.e., defragmented), but if they were fragmented, then their blocks are spread out around the DISK or memory card and the program has absolutely no way to know where/which ones to use. Most of the corrupted recovered files will have at least one cluster's worth of correct data, but then contain whatever happened to be in the subsequent clusters that used to belong to other files. This means that the original files are effectively lost. Having said that, some people have had success with a program called PhotoRec, which searches a bit more thoroughly for file fragments, but even so complete recovery of all files may not be possible.

Solve : Front page 2000 broken hyperlinks?

Answer»

Hello:
I need some help fixing a few broken links.
I'm using FP2000 & Windows 8.
The Views-Reports option in FP shows some broken hyperlinks (see attachment “All broken links”), which shows= ”_themes/sandston/blhomep.gif”  - and a few others like it plus= “formrslt.htm” - which is related to a feedback form on the “CONTACT THE ARTIST” page.

When I go to the = “edit hyperlink” box (see attachment: “themes - edit hyperlink”), I cannot figure out what to replace the hyperlink with or anything else, so I go to = "edit page" (see attachment: “themes - edit page”) to fix the broken hyperlink = “_themes/sandston/blhomep.gif”, but I cannot determine what is broken there or how to fix anything!!!

Regarding broken hyperlink= “formrslt.htm” (see attachment: “form - edit hyperlink”), I cannot determine what to do in the options box and when I go to “edit page”, (I am not allowed to POST any more forms!), I am led to the “CONTACT THE ARTIST” page and have no idea what to do to find or fix any broken hyperlink in there.

I have been able to find and fix most other broken links in my FP site but not those mentioned above so……….

Thank you for whatever help you can offer on these issues,
Jim

Have you used FP 2000 before? are you familiar with how it handles local and remote web pages? Does your website have the FP extensions enables? How do your publish your website? Normally, Front Page does it all automatically. You get into trouble when you try to  FTP something yourself.

Also, windows does not care about upper and  lower case.  But servers do. Even Windows servers.  So on your local machine you might have a link like this:
/images/redface.jpg
which refers to a picture named 'redface.JPG' in your local images directory. And that will work on your local windows machine. But on the remote website it will not work unless FP changes it to lower case.
Make sure all image reverences are lower case.
Hello Geek-9pm.

Jim: I have tried a few other attachment methods and am getting no better results so I have no idea how to demonstrate my issues for now.  Any ideas?

The links are relative links.
Jim: what does that mean?

Have you used FP 2000 before?
Jim: Yes, for many years now.

Jim: What do you mean?

Does your website have the FP extensions enables?
Jim: Yes.  Our site is at: www.rainbowsedgefineart.com

How do your publish your website?
Jim: I publish with Front Page Publish option in the File menu.

Normally, Front Page does it all automatically. You get into trouble when you try to  FTP something yourself.

Jim: Most of the image references are upper case but I've never had any problems with the "case" thing.

Below is another attempt to show the "Edit hyperlink" box that I have mentioned before - not much better though!   How can I demonstrate the images I need to show everyone that come up in FP after the "broken links" information?

Yours,
jim

OK,it looks like you lost some files. or they got moved.
The css contains reference to a gif file. That file is no ,onger at that location.

You can not repair a link if the file is missing. Front Page should replace a missing file when you publish again. Front Page takes inventory when you publish. If a file is on you local machine, it nwill send it to the remote if NEEDED.

Under the FP way of doing things, yuo have a "web" on your local macine whichnis duplicated non the remote server.
Example:
I have a website  at
http:/www./help9pm.com                   <--remote base
and on my local machine in have
D:\Mydocuments\MyWebs\help9pm     <--local base
FP considers that directory to be like a server.
FP assigns the directory 'help9pm' extra chuff that is needed to UPDATE and transfer files to the remote server. Some are:
_private
_vti_cnf
_vti_pvt
images
index.htlm
The directories with the underscore _ are peculiar to Front Page. These directories must EXIST on both the local and remote server.
You are using the Themes option of Front Page. It creates the CSS files needed to help organize your pages so all pages have a familiar look and style. All the GIF files needed are together in one place and Front Page makes the right relative references.
Relative reference means that the full URL is not given. That is because the full URL for your local machine is not the name as the remote. So it has to be relative to the base address.

A broken link means the either the link is wrong or the file moved.  Either yon or somebody moved to removed some files needed for the themes.
Files used in themes are not usually files you update often, unless you are doing something dynamic, like chaining the nook of all pages every day.

If everything is good on the local machine, ask Front Page to publish everything again. That should fix the broken blinks.

When I find a problem non my local machine, I just copy all my pages and images to a new directory and tell Front Page to create a new local web and install the theme I want. Then publish to the remote site.

If your local themes got damaged, Install Front Page again.

Hope this is of some help.

Solve : Windows Photo Gallery-Can't save scanned items-System cannot find file specified?

Answer»

When I try to scan a document, I am PROMPTED to name the FILE and get the following error, which prevents me from saving the file:

The following error occurred while importing image.jpg: The system cannot find the file specified. Try again. Skip this file. Skip all files with errors.

I think the problem started when I had a trojan virus that was TOUGH to get rid of (I am hoping I have removed all the remnants--all virus scans come out clean) and moved the entire shell "Pictures" folder to an external hard drive to protect my photos. I realized afterwards that I should have just moved the individual files. I tried to move the entire Pictures folder back to C: drive where it was, but I don't think that worked in maintaining the associations it had, namely with Windows Photo Gallery. How can I get this working again?

My system restore doesn't work either anymore, so that will be of no help. I am trying to avoid reinstalling Vista at all costs.

ALSO, when I click on the start button and get the drop down box with the programs on the right side and links to folders on the left (see below), the Pictures link no longer works either, which I think is related to moving the entire folder and trying, unsuccessfully, to move it back. How can I fix this related problem?

Thanks so much.

I'll have to start a new topic on the fact that I also can't open or download any files in yahoo using internet explorer 9.0 only (works in FF and Chrome) or download .exe software files in IE9? Just thought I would mention in case the issues are linked...

This means when you created the document you only made a link to the pic...instead of copying it into the doc itself...
Now the file path/location has changed and that's exactly what the scanning app is telling you.
When moving them back it most likely created a new Pictures folder...which path's location is different.
You will have to do it manually i'm afraid.

P.S. This behaviour wasn't CAUSED by the trojan.

Are Windows Program Mgr and File Mgr available for newer platforms?  The last time I used it was on Millenium.a2little, How old are you?
Have you been asleep for 13 YEARS?1. Today, Program Manager has little practical USE BEYOND compatibility with pre-Windows 95 programs. However you can install it from one of these installation CDs: Windows 2000, XP Original Release or SP1. Expand it by typing this at the command prompt (replacing D: with the CD-ROM drive letter):

expand -r D:\i386\progman.ex_ %Windir%

2. To run File Manager natively under Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 or Windows 7 you need COMMCTRL.DLL and other necessary DLLS. You can download an MSI installer that installs these and a modified version of Fileman.exe here:

Yes, That is how I found a torrent thing. So I installed a torrent package I trust and did the torrent and got a clean copy of the LibreOffice Installer.

It was hard to find a DECENT download link. I tried several, they would either fail or push stuff I did not ask for. Yes, the pushed stuff with no opt-out options. Including one that started a registry scan, so it naiad, I had to stop it with brute force. This was on a recent install o0f XP.

Hard to believe. Somebody bought a domain to phish with.
I am phish ed off.For someone who knows better you took a bad route to a DLoad that probably will cause way more ISSUES than if you had simply followed my advice above...
I give up.Patio, In really did try. I was not able to do a direct download from the official site. We are a family that basically trust other people. It is increasingly hard to adapt to the growing hostility we find in areas that we used to trust. One example, as you now, is the CNET download site.
Yesterday my wife  got a strange call from somebody that claimed to be part of the credit card department of out bank. He wanted our checking ACCOUNT routing number  to pay down our credit card.
Unrelated? Isolated?  No, they are ball a bunch of crooks.

Really, organizations like the Libre Office people are doing a lot to promote advancement of technology. Sad to say that so many want to use their REPUTATION to defraud the unsuspecting.

Please don't give up on n me and fools like me. I am learning.

Another example.  Softronic claims to have the download, but the don't. Or maybe they do. Google list sSoftronic about three times. So you have to sort them out and find if any are real.

Download free software from Softonic. Safe and 100% virus-free. Discover apps for Windows, Mac and mobile, tips, tutorials and videos, and much more. The website ..
I don't believe that is true.

Again, if you get a clean copy of Libre Office, it is worth it.
Don't give up!What about using a portable release of it. I haven't tried the LibreOffice Portable yet, but with other open source and free apps and software out there, avoiding an installer can avoid bundleware and toolbars etc from being installed or asked to install.

I am still using Open Office 3.3, which is out of date, but it does what I need and I dont need any additional newer features or support for newer file types etc.

Half the size and it is portable. I will give it a try on my laptop.

Solve : Windows Outlook 2000 is malfunctioning?

Answer» HELLO!

I use Outlook 2000 for my EMAIL.  For no reason the links on my incoming email no longer work.

I went to the Detect and Repair tab under help, but every time I run it it asks for the disk, loads some information and then stops midstream and times out.

Any idea how I can fix this?

MS Windows XP  (sp3)
Geforce 8800 GT x2

ThanksAssuming you have HTML enabled and not disabled in Outlook 2000 with links still not working, I'd export your e-mail to a file and uninstall and reinstall Outlook 2000 clean, then import your e-mail back to the account. I'd make BACKUP copies of your archive.pst FILES as well to avoid them getting wiped out from a reinstall of Outlook. The .pst files can be rejoined to the clean install of Outlook 2000 after install. Two questions:

How can I tell if I have HTML enabled?  I've looked at the help listings but could find nothing for this.

To rejoin the .pst files, do I simply need to copy them into the Outlook directory?

ThanksTry setting IE as your default browser if it is not already. How do I do that?

I looked at XP help and they said to pick Search and then Change Preferences.  But there is no Change Preferences option in the Search window.

Internet Options - Programs Tab - Make DefaultStill lost.

Where do I find Internet Options?Control PanelOK, thanks!  For some reason, that seems to work.

But I don't want IE as my default browser and Firefox used to work there.  Any idea on how I can get Firefox back online with Outlook?Just use Firefox for everything else. Quote from: Allan on December 07, 2013, 03:36:11 PM

Solve : Suggestion about VMWare?

I want to run certain software in vmware , need about 10-20 VIRTUAL pc
but currently i use 6 win xp in vmware with 128 ram and 1 core.
My pc Spec , Core 2 Quad Q6600 with 4 gb ram , and it takes 92% of my 4gb ram.
Is there any way to run that software with more ightweight OS ?
the closest example i can give is running ccleaner in 1 pc, and i want to run it in 10-20 pc

I read VMWare SERVER , VMware vcenter , vsphere, but don't know how that works
Hope someone understand this question  What is the host OS?

Why do you need 6 win xp in VMware?

How many VM (virtual machines) do you need, or think you need, to run at the same time?

What does the following sentence mean?:

Do you mean your host OS, running alone, consumes 92% of memory?  4GB of RAM is a rather low AMOUNT of physical RAM for what you're trying to do.

I could be wrong but I believe you would need to install CCleaner, or any app, in each of the VM's.

My host OS is Win 7
If possible i need about 10-15 Win xp in vmware .
And yes i only have 4gb ram ,
install ccleaner in each vm is the example , i and my friends want to  test some PROGRAMS that we create ourselves and it's light weight as ccleaner only
so it's not possible with 4 gb ram ?

at first we try with sandboxie and the program itself is conflict with each other, so we use vmware, and it works great but it consume more resource than we expected  Quote from: lucius100 on December 05, 2013, 09:57:48 PM
If possible i need about 10-15 Win xp in vmware .
Do you want to run all of them at the same time?  That will either work very poorly or not at all.  Back in 2011, I had a VM for Linux Ubuntu installed on my old Pentium 4 with 4GB of RAM and running even that one VM would get a bit sluggish if I simultaneously had several programs, including a browser with multiple taps, open in WINDOWS 7 and then switching back and forth between Win 7 and Ubuntu.  So, if I wanted to mainly use Ubuntu for awhile, closing open programs in Win 7 worked best.

So, if you're thinking of running 10-15 Win xp in vmware all at the same time, I'd say forget it.  I'm sure you will have to limit the running of VM's to 1 or 2 at a time, for all practical purposes.

Solve : Can't Uninstall Bitlord 2.2??

Answer» HEY guys
So im trying to get rid of Bitlord, however its installed on an external hard drive; It wont show up under add/remove programs, other 'uninstaller programs' CANT seem to FIND it because they only search my C: disc. I eventually got fed up and tried to just shift+delete the entire folder (i know thats bad) but it wouldnt even let me do that. It says that the action cant be completed because Bitlord is open in another program (Bitlord Files), yet that is a subfolder within what i was trying to delete. I tried to download a NEW installer to try and uninstall it, and it wont even LOAD that because it says 'bitlord is running.' I cant find anything through task manager, can someone give me some other suggestions on how to get rid of it please?More information is needed.
Is it only one file in a subfolder or are there lots of other files like dll files etc supporting the application? Have you tried with booting to windows safe mode and try delete the file? Alternatively, if it's only one file, use malwarebytes File Assassin program to delete file(s) with such errors.

Solve : Adobe problems and more?

Answer»

Hello, I've been having more and more problems with my computer after downloading a Celtx software. I WENT through and finally DELETED it and a few other programs I figured I wouldn't need. That seemed to make my computer go a bit faster. Then I updated my mozilla firefox, and now when I attempt to watch any VIDEOS the screen says I need to update my adobe. So I do, and right after it says I have downloaded it I try to watch a video, and it still says I don't have the proper updates. I've had problems with my adobe program for over a year now. FIRST it wouldn't let me download pdf files, and now it won't let me watch videos. Also, when I try to make google my homepage it never saves the change, my mozilla fox will randomly close on me, and my computer will even fall into sleep mode as I'm working on it. Thank you for the help! I need it :/ Did you restart firefox after updating flash? Uninstall mozilla firefox and adobe flash player from add/remove programs (windows xp) / Programs and features (windows vista and above). Download fresh and latest copy of firefox and install. Then download fresh and latest copy of adobe flash and Install.
For your laptop sleep problems,
1) check the power settings in control panel if you have by mistake set your sleep options to 1min or less. Set to minimum 5minutes.
2) If the above option is all right, next time it goes in sleep mode when you are working, check if the power led is going off and coming slowly? That indicates if it is going in sleep mode or not. The point here is to check if it is going into sleep mode or is the screen going off / back lit off problem. Thanks, I will check these things out now. You said delete adobe flash player....so I can delete this and reinstall it for free? Thanks for the help! Your advice solved a lot of problems. I uninstalled Firefox, redownloaded it, and was successfully able to download adobe flash player! Now I can watch videos woo hoo! I checked the sleep mode option, and yes it was set to go into sleep mode after an hour. I changed it to "never". Thanks!Great. But did changing the power setting to never solved problem? If it was EARLIER set to 1 hour then it should not goto sleep while working!!Yes, I'm back because it's going to sleep again! What the heck, I don't know what to do....Also, I noticed flash playing saying it crashed and for a few minutes it wouldn't play videos but now it's working....I don't know if it will do this again.Oh my goodness as I was on here, my computer closed Firefox, logged out and shut down....is this a virus problem?I don't know why I assumed it was a laptop. My bad. Is it a laptop or desktop? You're right; it's a laptop.Ok, do you feel the bottom /base of the laptop is getting too much hot?? So much that it sometimes gets difficult to keep on your laps??
As far as virus is concerned you can download Malwarebytes Antimalware  install and run a full system scan.It does get quite hot, I actually always put it on the table or couch so it's not on my legs. As for antivirus, my grandmother just gave me Norton to download, so I will try that.It may be a good idea to state what "CeltX" app this was that was installed...I'm not sure which Celtx app was installed....I was advised to download any free one I could find and I did.
I just turned on my laptop to download the norton and very soon after turning it on heard this terrible noise from the fan location.....is it an old fan that needs to be replaced?Your laptop needs to be serviced from inside. I.e- to make it free of dust. The noise may be of hard dust particles stucked in fan or fan needs lubrication. Will you be able to take your laptop apart?Hello, yes I think I may need to have it serviced. I looked online how to clean my fan which I did the best I could. I also read things about lubrication and I have no idea how to do that...I'm thinking I may need a specialist aw man. After cleaning my fan I turned on the laptop and heard the noise again.

Solve : Apache server issues?

Answer»

I use an Amazon-ec2 linux computer and I have just installed Apache and opened ports 80 and 443 in the security groups and started the server. but then whenever i go to connect to try to see whether it worked or not I can not connect at all (the server does not respond in time) and I double and triple checked my ports and they are fine so i am wondering if anyone can please help answer what I MIGHT be doing wrong. all the commands i used to install and set it up will be pasted below.
thank you
Code: [Select]sudo yum update -y
sudo yum groupinstall -y "Web Server" "MySQL Database" "PHP Support"
sudo yum install -y php-mysql
sudo service httpd start
sudo chkconfig httpd on
chkconfig --list httpd
httpd           0:off   1:off   2:on    3:on    4:on    5:on    6:offI have run into issues with ISP's blocking servers. I have had to run my apache servers on ports like 8080 and 8077 etc instead of port 80. Also instead of 443 I have had to use alternate port numbers as well when having FTP etc.

Can you view your web page locally through the apache service at 127.0.0.1? If you can not view it locally, then there is a problem with it and it may be in the httpd.conf or local firewall blocking etc. If you can view it locally through browser thru apache service to local, then it is either ISP blocking it or you need to set up your port forwarding to allow passthrough of specific port traffic to a specific IP in your router. If your port forwarding is not configured and enabled then your router will not allow access to the apache server system from other computers.I will try what you said to do as soon as Amazon Web Services stop giving me an error 400 BadRequest lol. I wonder if it is possible a problem with Amazons end of this (unfortunately i do not have a web browser on my Amazon Linux-AMI server and I do not have direct contact with the server since it is in the cloud.) thanks for the advice though I will still be changing the port numbers as soon as I can get on the AWS interface. Quote

Didnt realize this was on Amazon Cloud, you have very limited access to server then. I'd contact Amazon ( AWS ) tech support directly and have them assist you. You do not need to mess with changing ports or port forwarding in your router. I thought you were running your own server and were an amazon merchant with a store front that was self hosted or something like that branched off of an amazon store front.

Did you ever get Apache to work yet without adjusting the httpd.conf file for supporting server side scripting languages and features? I would verify that you can get to the default Apache Home page of the server before enabling the modules for features. Then once you know that the default Apache setup is working you can then EDIT the httpd.conf ( apache config ) to REMOVE the # hashes to enable features and edit parameters that require modification from the default such as SSL enabled etc.

Looking back at your initial post I see mySQL and PHP, so you will need to enable those modules by removing the # before  them in this config file. I am not sure if mySQL has a module or if there is a passthru of communications directly from PHP to the servers mySQL service, but I remember PHP requiring a # removed to enable that module to support PHP scripts.ok I will try to call them(they might not be able to answer today because of it being thanksgiving), Also I do not know where I might find the config file is it maybe SOMEWHERE in the /var/www directory? http://commanigy.com/blog/2011/6/8/finding-apache-configuration-file-httpd-conf-location

Solve : upgrade from CS3 to CS6?

Answer»

Can anyone tell me the software I need to buy so I can GO from Photoshop CS3 to CS6 ?   I have a Mac 10.6.8     .......( I don't want Creative Cloud)

Thanks,  Frank http://bit.ly/199sSrNI don't think disguised "Let me Google that for you" replies are the way to win yourself FRIENDS around here, Google. Or get you a rep as a serious helper.

Frankw, from looking at Adobe's upgrade chart, the only upgrade path to CS6 that qualifies for upgrade pricing is from either Photoshop CS5 or CS5 Extended.

Maybe not, but that is what the original poster should have done. I found the answer to his question in the third result after searching. Quote from: Google on November 29, 2013, 01:15:41 PM

It is not your place to tell him that. Such posts damage the forum. If you thought it was so appropriate and clever, why did you disguise the link?

If you want to help the OP by answering his question, that's fine. But it's not your - or OUR - job to tell someone he should have used Google rather than post here.As odd as this sounds written down - Google, PLEASE don't just post links to Google.  This has been discussed before when many helpers thought it was appropriate to post links to "let me Google that for you" and similar sites, and as Salmon says it's not appropriate or helpful.  If you'd like to discuss this further, please feel free to PM myself or ANOTHER mod.

Edit: sorry Allan, posted at the same time as you NP Calum. We're on the same page.
