Solve : can not print from paint? |
|
Answer» Greetings, Is there something different about paint in Win 7?Not as far as this technique is concerned. It should work. Sorry, I do not know what the problem is. However, you could use the Snipping Tool in Windows 7. You can find it in Accessories in the Programs Menu. It's a very handy tool for capturing screen prints. You can save the image from Snipping Tool. Snipping Tool is more flexible in selecting selecting the area you capture. If you still want to crop or modify the image, you can open it in Paint to do that. Quote from: Chrisxs5 on November 18, 2013, 09:28:45 AM You are probably pasting a picture to large for canvas size. Try pasting in Wordpad to see if you get the entire picture.I don't believe canvas size is an issue here. Paint should accept any size screen print regardless of the size of the canvas when Paint is opened. Actually canvas SETTINGS have a lot to do with it. Canvas settings for the program can vary depending on individual machines and Windows install builds. Also Paint does not ask any canvas size questions when pasting from the clipboard, it assumes that you have already set the size in which you need and then places your paste into the top left corner. Other programs such as Paint.net do not make these assumptions and ask if you would like to adjust during a paste. Lets say the default canvas setting is 800x600 and the users screen setting is 1920x1080, when pasting the full screen would not fit into the canvas. Now the easy way to test this before moving onto other solutions, is to paste into Wordpad which by default reduces any clipboard object to fit within its pages. Allowing us to make sure we are getting full copies to the clipboard. REMEMBER this would be a troubleshooting process.Chris, I hear your reasoning and it's logical but Paint simply does not work that way. I presume we have the same concept of the canvas; it's the drawing area when you open Paint. You cannot use any of Paint's drawing tools outside of the canvas area. But, when doing a screen capture, Paint accepts the image pasted into it, regardless of how large the image is, regardless of whether that image is larger than the canvas size when a new Paint window was opened. In other words, Paint enlarges the canvas to fit the pasted image. This adjusted canvas size is temporary. If you save that pasted image to a file, close Paint, and reopen it, the canvas size reverts back to its size before that pasting of a larger image into it. Quote from: Chrisxs5 on November 19, 2013, 06:25:24 AM Also Paint does not ask any canvas size questions when pasting from the clipboard, it assumes that you have already set the size in which you need and then places your paste into the top left corner.Think about what you just said, Does it make sense? In effect, you're saying that the user must determine the size of an image before pasting it into Paint to be sure that part of their image does not get cut off. Fortunately, that is not necessary, as I explained above. Quote Canvas settings for the program can vary depending on individual machines and Windows install builds. No, it does not. The default canvas size is, I'm sure, the same on any new Windows system with default settings. But, even if the size on new machines is varied for some reason, it is irrelevant to the issue here since Paint accepts whatever size image is pasted into it, regardless of the canvas size immediately before the paste action. Thanks for the responses (sorry for the delay). The size of the image on the screen is really not the issue, what I want to do is simply print a screen shot (regardless of the size of the image on the screen at that time). I know that there are plenty of programs, ways ect. print a screen shot, but I really wanted to paste this image into paint because I wanted to add a word balloon to the image. The problem is properly printing the image. The method to print the image that I described in my first POST has worked for me for years ( I know on XP but i'm not sure about win 7). Thanks and Cheers !Let's clarify a point that I thinks clarification? Are you talking printing on paper? If so, what size sheets? |

Solve : 7-zip Cannot Compress? |
|
Answer» I have got the first billion digits of pi in .txt FORMAT. It is 1.5 GB big. I'm planning on sharing it on the internet, but I don't want to put a 1.5 GB text file up there. So, I tried to compress it using 7-zip. Unfortunately, 7-zip failed to compress it...it came up with a message: "system cannot allocate the required amount of memory." Is the nonobjective speed or size? The objective was reduced size, for web sharing. Time taken to compress is not, I think, an issue. This approach might be fun: With curl.exe http://curl.haxx.se/ you can download a range of pi digits so if you want to examine them you don't even need the billion digit file to be stored locally. Store the first 10 digits of Pi in pi-10-digits.txt (the start character is 2 because the first character of the file is the decimal point) curl -o pi-10-digits.txt -r 2-11 http://stuff.mit.edu/afs/sipb/contrib/pi/pi-billion.txt result: 1415926535 Store the 50 digits of Pi starting at the 70th digit in pi-50-digits-from70.txt curl -o pi-50-digits-from-70.txt -r 71-121 http://stuff.mit.edu/afs/sipb/contrib/pi/pi-billion.txt result: 406286208998628034825342117067982148086513282306647 Salmon Trout, you are beyond brilliant! How do you find such things? Are you riving inside of Google?Came back, and saw all these great, helpful replies.....thanks very much. And Salmon Trout, the curl.exe was very INTERESTING! Thanks! You can use curl.exe to get a range of bytes (or in this case, characters) from a local file. You have to convert the file path to a file url starting file:/// and using forward slashes instead of backslashes: From the local file D:\Pi\pi-billion.txt, create a text file with the first 10 digits of Pi (the start character is 2 because the first character of the file is the decimal point): curl -o pi-10-digits.txt -r 2-11 file:///d:/pi/pi-billion.txt Thus you see that curl.exe can be used as a local file splitter. I found a pi calculator program for Windows by Fabrice Bellard http://www.bellard.org/pi/pi2700e9/tpi-0.9.3-win.zip I calculated the first billion places of Pi on my home PC (AMD Phenom II 945, 4GB RAM, Windows 7 64 bit) and it took 1 hour 4 minutes. I chose to limit RAM usage to 1 GB and also to store some of the intermediate results on disk rather than keep them in RAM. If I had gone for the all-RAM option it would have been a lot quicker but the PC would have been quite slow at doing other tasks. I compared the first million digits of my CALCULATION with the first million of the MIT billion digit file and they are the same. Next: compare the full billion. Of course it won't prove that either set is "right"... Pi' are round... |

Solve : Blue Lines on left side of emails - how to remove? |
|
Answer» I RECEIVE emails with blue lines on the left side. They seem impossible to remove. One person thinks they come from AOL. Does anyone know anything about this? Quote I receive emails with blue lines on the left side.Blue lines where, in the email?I belong to a few informal groups that forward jokes etc. to other members. MANY of the emails I receive have blue lines on them. On the Left side. I have spent an inordinate amount of effort trying to get rid of them and they won't go away when I try to forward the email. Should I include one? I presume I can add an attachement here. You mean vertical lines, right? I THINK you'll find your solution here: http://forums.cnet.com/5208-6638_102-0.html?forumID=15&threadID=267150&messageID=2601575Thanks, Mr/Ms. Soy. However, I use Outlook and cannot find a similar link/checkbox/option to the one in the Cnet forum thread. I wonder where these blue lines come from? How do they get there? Are they table or section borders? Thanks. Those marks get there due to SETTINGS in the senders email client. For example, with Windows Mail (Windows Vista), this setting is shown in this screen print: Outlook Express has the same setting. I found a setting in Outlook 2007 that would enable the feature. Apparently, the default setting upon installation of Office is Disable. If you WANT to know where the setting is in Outlook, let me know. I have Outlook 2003 on another ccmputer. Quote Are they table or section borders?I'm not sure of the exact technical classification, but I see I can remove them by going into the Source view in Windows Mail and removing some code lines. On AOL, to rid your e mails of the blue lines on the left side do this: Go to "SETTINGS " on your AOL toolbar at the top of your screen. Once you have clicked into settings, click ok " A to Z, " or " Show ALL Categories. " Click on " e Mail Settings. " A screen will come up. Look at the very bottom of that screen. The last option. There are 3 options, with three circles. Click the CIRCLE that says " None. " Then click " Save." Log off of AOL. Log back onto AOL. Now, when you forward an e mail, the blue lines will be gone. This works on ALL Versions of AOL. Now, if you could only get everyone else on AOL to do the same thing, there wouldn't be ANY blue lines. Hope this helps. ~S~They haven't been back in 5 Years... |

Solve : Sync Toy problems? |
|
Answer» After having my computer in MALWARE removal in December, I decided I needed to get serious about backing up my data. SyncBack offers a Free version...worth a looksee. I'm only a little late getting back to you! The reason is that I found Windows Live Mesh met my needs. But when Live Mesh was discontinued, I didn't want to use SkyDrive as they intended, so I went back to your SyncBack suggestion. I did use it for a while. Live sync is not available in the free version. I used it successfully in the mirror function, but that was not as useful because if I had to do something in the secondary computer, it wouldn't pick it up in the primary computer. So I had to do a workaround to save it in the public folder and manually pick it up when I went back to the other computer. I switched to FreeFileSync now, which is nearly the same user interface, but is completely free with all the features. I just installed it, so we will see how it works out. |

Solve : DOS based data to Windows 7? |
|
Answer» I am trying to export or somehow transfer customer history from an old DOS program called CMS (Contractor Management Systems) into a new business software (As yet to be decided). Any suggestions on how to do so without hiring someone to do time consuming data re-entry? I have been told to re-enter all the data into EXCEL because then that should import easily into the new software. The problem is that we have customer HISTORIES that go back twenty years and that includes every service we have provided over the years. Is there a fast way to export the DOS programs data in to EXCEL or will we have to have someone manually re-enter the data into EXCEL?Will the old CMS program export to any type of file such as text (.txt) or CSV (.CSV), or any other? Excel can import a variety of file types. The problem I am having with the DOS based CMS program is that I can not find any place in the program with the option to "Save As", or "Send To" or anything of that nature. It is completely odd to me that there doesn't seem to be any way to take any of the CMS customer files and save them or send them anywhere. The company which designed the software went out of business back around 2001 so I can't even find a contact to ask about this situation. I wish I could find out how to save the database as .txt or as a csv file for Excel. What is the name of the DOS-based CMS program? There are database programmers out there who might be ABLE to do this, for a fee.The program, CMS, stands for Contractor Management Systems. It's a business management software that has been used since the early 80s by the company I just began working for. They want to get a new software to manage the business and I was given the awesome task of choosing one. Now I have to figure out how to get 30+ years of customer service history from CMS to whichever new software I decide upon. The business had CMS running on 3 office computers with 1 of those computers being the primary. That computer hasn't worked for a few years so they have been running CMS off of the other 2 computers. The whole situation is a mess. I know that we can have someone do time consuming data re-entry into Excel and then transfer those files into a new software without trouble but I don't want to commit to doing that tedious process until I have exhausted my SEARCH for a way to export the info out of CMS.Can you browse files, VIA Windows Explorer or a Command Prompt screen, in the directory(ies) where you believe the CMS data would be stored? If you could identify the data files of CMS, you could try opening or importing them with Excel or Access (database). For this purpose, copying the file to a different location and using the copy for testing might be advisable. If all else fails, could you print the database and OCR the sheets?Or change the MS-DOS program's printer from LPT1: to a file (.PRN type probably) and print the database? BTW nice Breaking Bad reference I thought it was the best thing on TV and it was, but now it's over I am watching Mad Men (I am up to Season 2 episode 7) Quote from: jupiterzeus on November 14, 2013, 09:30:02 AM The problem I am having with the DOS based CMS program is that I can not find any place in the program with the option to "Save As", or "Send To" or anything of that nature. This isn't surprising, most Business software didn't have such features integrated into it- eg. My company has a ancient THEOS-based product that has been used since the 80's as well, and is in fact still active. We are only now moving to a Windows-based system in order to "modernize" the product (and move away from THEOS). It has no export capability in the original software, we had to write the appropriate export/import to get started on the Windows version. In your case, The program might use a standard format; but it's also possible their data files are in their own format. If you are very lucky, they might use ISAM database files- if so there are numerous products that can read the data and import it into other database formats. Quote It is completely odd to me that there doesn't seem to be any way to take any of the CMS customer files and save them or send them anywhere. This didn't become a common feature until much later. Programs typically tried to avoid making it easy to switch to any competitor product. Quote I wish I could find out how to save the database as .txt or as a csv file for Excel.I would suggest not using Excel. Excel is not a database program- it is a spreadsheet. If you have 20+ years of data it might not work anyway. The bigger problem is that even if you export the data from the old system to some general format, or even a modern database, it still isn't very useful, because it's unlikely that the new system will understand the layout of the database, so there would still be extensive rework needed to move it to the new format. The vendor you choose for the new product may be able to assist with this. Quote from: jupiterzeus on November 14, 2013, 12:16:45 PM I did find a feature in the CMS program that allows you to use a copy window to paste portions of the screen to a windows clipboard. That is a feature of Windows, actually. Basically, here is what I would suggest: 1. Find out where the program is STORING it's data files. 2. Determine what kind of files they are. If you share some of the filenames you find, we may be able to help determine the format being used. 3. Cross your fingers that it's not proprietary. Some products used completely undocumented data file formats that only the company knew the details of. 4.If it's a format that is interchangable, such as ISAM, which was a common database format for DOS programs, you should be able to find a importer or exporter that can move that ISAM data into another database. If it's proprietary, you're in a pickle. You'd need to get something custom programmed to convert from that format. It might be possible to analyse the database file format e.g. in a hex editor and see if it can be exported, but that is paid-for programmer territory really. One thing - old MS-DOS machines don't last for ever - it might be wise to back up the database to a hard drive made in this millenium or at least one set of DVD-Rs Oh how I wish that were possible Salmon. The computers the company has CMS running on are from before the days of DVD-R, and they barely have CD-Rom. One of the computers is operating Windows 98 SE and the other is running Windows 95. I can't believe they let the system get this far behind and are only now thinking about updating to this millenium. Since they have tasked you with this project i think it's time to present the alternative solutions that have been suggested...and ask them to open their checkbook... Quote from: jupiterzeus on November 14, 2013, 01:05:22 PM Oh how I wish that were possible Salmon. CD and DVD burners work on Windows 95 and 98. (or, at least on 98). So which is more important- the data, or the $40-$50 a DVD Burner would cost? |

Solve : LARGE LETTERS/NUMBERS? |
|
Answer» hello all, ALL the LETTERS and NUMBERS are the size of;...size of what?the size of the leters/numbers when you are in "safe mode". or maybe i should say LARGE "font size"...Do you mean the resolution has changed? Everything changes "size" on different resolutions. In Windows 7, you can right click the desktop, and choose Screen Resolution in the menu. Mine has a "Recommended" resolution of 1920 x 1080. If not that, do you mean just the desktop icon size? In Windows 7 you can right click the desktop, and hover over the View option in the menu. It lets you choose Large, Medium or Small desktop icons. Hope this helps! Quote the size of the leters/numbers when you are in "safe mode".That's normal in safemode as the native resolution of a GPU chip or dedicated card will only run or is available in normal mode. Solve : Virtual PC 2007, no longer working in Windows 7 Home Premium? |
|
Answer» This is kind of interesting to me, because I installed Virtual PC 2007 to this Windows 7 Home Premium system a while back and it was running fine. I remember a blat that this is not supported for Windows 7 when I first installed it and got around this by installing using reverse XP COMPATIBILITY mode. Then ran it with no problems for months. Don't know what "Reverse Compatibility mode" is. Nor am I familiar with these "blats" that are evidently a core part of Windows..http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/10436/using-program-compatibility-mode-in-windows-7/ Quote Anyway, Windows Update probably installed "Windows Virtual PC" for whatever reason. The "blat" (by which I assume you mean the "This Program is blocked" dialog) only shows when Windows Virtual PC is installed. You can remove it through programs and Features. You will have to actually uninstall it from the "Installed Updates" feature. I manually installed Virtual PC 2007 SP1, and forced it to install via the compatibility mode in Windows 7 when originally it did not want to install. Sometime between the last time that I used it and attempted to use it last night it seems as it broke and my assumption is that a Microsoft Update broke it with no proof to point the finger at Microsoft for breaking it, but its an educated guess GIVEN the nature of the failure and message. Blat = Message is "Virtual PC 2007 is not supported on this version of Windows" and gives me a check online for a solution option. To where there is no solution for Windows 7. Patio I was thinking I was going to have to go with VMware or VirtualBox, however from what I have read they do not play well with VHD's created under VPC2007, and I would probably have to create new ones. Was hoping to not have to recreate them, but if thats what I have to do, then thats what I have to do. I do have a Windows XP Pro machine that can run these VHD's for testing, with no problems and maybe from now on, I will have to run the already created virtual environments on that lesser powerful dual-core with just 2GB RAM vs my more powerful Win 7 system with the Athlon II x4. Quote from: DaveLembke on March 22, 2013, 06:17:13 PM BC_ProgrammerI know what Program Compatibility Modes are. I am unfamiliar with "Reverse" Compatibility Modes. I was part stabbing at the fact that there is no such thing; I had an idea what you meant but clarity is always a bit important... If Windows Virtual PC is installed (and it was pushed as part of WU at some point), you will get that message from Windows when you run Virtual PC. |

Solve : Excel 2010, increasing multiple formula areas? |
|
Answer» I am working with an Excel 2010 file and am not sure how to approach my problem. Example: Pretend that cells B4:B12 and C4:C12 are not empty. They already have data in them that I just do not want to have included in the formula yet. Oldun; I tried your formulas, but either they are an extension of what TechnoGeek and Salmon Trout were saying, or I am missing something. If this formula can accomplish what I described above, let me know and I will play around with it some more. Thank you for all your help!As you are expanding the range based on the current month, try this: 1. Select Define Name, enter a name for column B (e.g. ColB), and in the Refers to box, enter: '=OFFSET($B$1,0,0,MONTH(TODAY()),1)' without quotes 2. Repeat 1 above for column C, changing the name (e.g. ColC) and the formula (change $B$1 to $C$1) 3. In A1 of the worksheet, enter: '=SUM(ColB)' without quotes. In A2, enter: '=SUM(ColB)' without quotes. That looks good! But is there a way to lock the date in place? Each month I need to have a saved copy with data up to that point that won't change if I open it later.Instead of MONTH(TODAY()), use MONTH($R$C), where $R$C is a cell you choose to contain the date in question. |

Solve : AVG vs Mcafee vs Norton vs Kaspersky? |

Answer» I tried many ANTIVIRUS and today i want to see everyone else's opinion on what is the best antivirus out of them You can draw your own conclusions by reading this.kaspersky is my favorite. AVG REMOVES all the .exe files.Clearly you can ignore the above post by janimanMy Vote is "Other" for myself... I have been using Microsoft Security Essentials without any problems on NUMEROUS systems. But if a corporate network etc, I'd go with Norton, since if your the guru of a corporate network and the company has plenty of money to pay for protection, you might as well buy licenses with Norton for all systems. I wouldnt want to be using MS Security Essentials on a corporate network for free and having to explain to my boss why it didnt catch a zero-day attack, and Norton may have caught it sooner etc and even though we saved $15,000, now we have a greater mess potentially in excess of $15,000 in damages. |

PLEASE help !All software or just one? It's Linux app from what i can see... Actually, it's a Linux distro, not just an application. It's meant for security testing. Movarind, did you download the 7z archive (VMWare version) or ISO version of Backtrack? What is your intention with it? Do you understand what you've downloaded and what it's meant for and how to use it? What are you trying to ACCOMPLISH with it?quaxo yes i do i know little of c++ HTML python java m using this to learn on computer hacking so why doesn't it want to open its not only this program Quote from: movarind on November 15, 2012, 05:27:45 AM using this to learn on computer hacking Sorry, red flag there. Answer» Which is the program I should work with? Is my main question. Have you ever used AutoFilter? (In libreoffice I think it's Data -> Filter -> AutoFilter, something similar at least). I also heard rumour they don't even have a developper for Base, at present. Finding it at the local library seems unlikely, as a web search didn't show any existing books on Base. Maybe I should consider switching to OpenOffice - in fact, I'll search right now whether they have better documentation on their version of DB-software (I don't know what one would call programs like Access, Base etc) Quote from: straffetoebak on December 07, 2012, 10:43:22 AM I looked at that address before; there's books on all LibreOffice things except for Base... I can capture the image without running sysprep, REDEPLOY it and it run just fine. I checked in the registry and the image state say complete which indicate that the image has been sysprep before, EVEN though I did not run sysprep on the image. Solve : Java installed but doesnot show...? |

Answer» Tried to reach my bank which is using java applet. But the applet doesnt show....checked bank ID, no java??!!!! Checked C:\ and yes java there....uninstalled and re-installed, yes I have java and no cant get into my bankaccount...have this jre1.7.0_09 and you state being "guru"? dont come with the first obvious, please, give some credit to my intelligence...the problem is on my PC, thats why I ask the experts here because, nobody else good give a helping hand, thats why you guys call yourself "HOPE"... It's always disconcerting to me when people looking for help all of a sudden decide to adopt a condescending and negative tone towards people that are trying to help... All of us here are Volunteers and give up our TIME and expertise for nothing although the sentiments of gratitude we get sparingly as they are make it all worthwhile. For your information truenorth's suggestion was not only valid and a good idea it was also what i would have suggested to check first had it been me... Reason being on secure websites if they make a change to their webpage they arent going to publicly post that info ....nor are they going to contact you buy e-mail as Banking Instutions will NEVER contact a customer via e-mail...they simply don't do things that way for security reasons. So bottom line here is if you find the assistance here lacking or inferior to your standards there's a whole web out there to explore...feel free to do so... BTW After a quick check i see you had the same issue 2 Years ago...and pretty much somewhat the same attitude... Here... Best of LUCK finding a solution. patio. Installing Java does not usually install the Java Plugin for all browsers. It also doesn't install to the root directory of C:. Solve : I updated Java but checking the version on the site doesn't work (FireFox)? |
|
Answer» I just updated Java to Version 7 Update 10 on FireFox 17.0.1 I suppose the problem could be either the firefox browser or the Vista O/S. Have you considered using another browser and trying the Java upgrade? That might point to the source of the conflict.truenorth No because I like FireFox.OK,truenorthAnyone else? I don't want to get virus just because Java isn't working with FireFox on my desktop computer. Quote from: AlwaysScrewed on December 19, 2012, 03:51:01 PM Anyone else? Java not working or being disabled decreases any possible attack surface. You are quite a bit safer with Java disabled in your browsers than the other way around. Is there a specific reason that you want to have Java enabled and working, or is this just a case of thinking it is a good practice to do so? Personally I don't use any sites that use Java, so I typically have it universally disabled in all my browsers, or simply don't install the plugin. If you want to get Java working in your browser, though, you should try uninstalling all Java items in Add/Remove, then install Java from here. Most web searches for installing Java from what I can tell lead to Java.com, but it wants to install using some weird installer thing and I have no idea what it does or does not contain. What you want is the Runtime environment. If you are running a 64-bit system, you will want to install the 32-bit version first. Firefox doesn't have an official 64-bit version so you need a 32-bit Java installation for it to use it. Hmm... well... I haven't had any issues so far since java isn't working with my browser now. Okay. I'll just live without it until either the next java update or until I come across a situation where I actually need it. I may either create another new topic or just bump this if this ends up being the case. Thanks for the help though. Quote Java not working or being disabled decreases any possible attack surface. You are quite a bit safer with Java disabled in your browsers than the other way around.THANK you BC. I'm sure this is not news to people in the know, but I've read so many times that you should always keep Java updated and when you update Oracle tells you "(EXPONENTIAL)Billion devices use Java". One gets the impression that it is necessary to stay connected.I keep the Java plugin disabled unilaterally, and I don't recall any instance where it stopped me from using a website. Java Applets have been mostly replaced by improvements in the rest of the web, such as HTML5, Javascript, and so forth, which can largely replace the functionality of a Java applet. Of course on the flip side, we do have the Java runtime itself, which is used by some desktop applications outside the browser. I do have that installed; It's just the browser plugins I keep disabled. Not really for security reasons but more because I find it to be a pain in the *censored*- the security improvements are a nice side-effect, though. Quote from: BC_Programmer on December 20, 2012, 07:09:17 PM I keep the Java plugin disabled unilaterally, and I don't recall any instance where it stopped me from using a website. Java Applets have been mostly replaced by improvements in the rest of the web, such as HTML5, Javascript, and so forth, which can largely replace the functionality of a Java applet. Definite agreement here. I actually keep Java (and also Unity Player) disabled. Java is rarely used on the web anymore, and when I do need it (again, not often) I can just go re-enable it. All the media-related plugins I have enabled are Flash (so ubiquitous it is necessary to keep enabled), Shockwave (for a certain online CLASS I'm taking) and the Chrome PDF viewer.I just got the Java update to Version 7 Update 10 after reading this discussion, even though I just installed Version 7 Update 9 two days ago. But, I thought I'd test this on my laptop running Windows Vista and Firefox 17.0.1 since you have the same OS and version of Firefox. Just before updating, I opened Firefox and went to http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp and clicked the button for Verify Java version. It confirmed I had Java Version 7 Update 9. To get the update to version 10, I opened the Java control panel from Windows Control Panel and initiated the update. I then opened Firefox and went to http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp and clicked the button for Verify Java version again to verify. This time, it simply would not confirm that I had Java installed. I clicked on Tools (on Firefox menu) and selected Add-ons. Next, I selected Plugins on the left column since it was not already selected when I opened the Add-ons panel. I saw that the Java plugin was disabled. So, apparently, Firefox or Java disabled the plugin during installation of Java Version 7 Update 10. I enabled the plugin, CLOSED Firefox, reopened it, went again to http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp and clicked the button for Verify Java version. This time, the verifcation procedure confirmed Java was working in Firefox. However, I'm going to disable it since, like other forum members have said, I rarely encounter a website that uses it. Also, the Firefox panel for plugins shows a warning in small gold text above the Java plugin; it says "Java (TM) Platform SE 7 U5 is know to cause security or reliability issues." Next to this text is a link title "More information". It leads to https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/blocked/p134. That link refers to update versions 6 and below, so I'm not sure why it would be displayed in connection with later update versions. |

For example, if I click on a cell to START to Copy a block, the formula in the cell comes up. If I press Enter the formula disappears and I can then click on the cell to carry out the Copy. Another example, I clicked on a cell then Cut, another cell then Paste. The Cut worked but the Paste did not. |

Solve : Office 2007 key doesn't work with 2010? |

Answer» Hi, I just got a new laptop and I need to get Office. My FRIEND has an extra COPY of Office 2007 and he sent me the product key. I have a 2010 free trial, but since the key is for 2007, it doesn't work. I can't find a download for 2007 on Microsoft's website. Is 2007 still available? If so, where can I get it? You could try eBay..I already have a key (yes, it's legit) , so I don't really want to spend LOTS of money on new software. This is clearly indicated by the fact the key didn't work for you when you attempted to USE it with the 2010 free trial. You can't just take a product key from any version of Office and use it with another version. If your friend does not want to do that, then I'd say they don't really have "an extra copy". Quote from: Cheezey on December 10, 2012, 09:50:35 AM ... so I don't really want to spend lots of money on new software. Then, then try the free LibreOffice. Well stated soybean... Solve : JitBit Easy Macro Creator - Playback faster than recorded keyboard/mouse? |
|
Answer» I have been using this JitBit Easy Macro Recorder http://www.jitbit.com/macro-recorder/ for about 6 YEARS now on slower ( Pentium 4 -> Core 2 Duo ) computers to run quick to create and use automated keyboard/mouse routines. BUT I thought there should be a real-time timer that should keep it all in sync no matter the speed of the computer. Many years ago before real-time timers the faster the computer the faster the program executed such as games that would start and Pac-Man ghosts would immediately catch Pac-Man upon starting an 8088 8-bit DOS game on a 486DX33Mhz.That wasn't quite how it worked. the original IBM PC did have a rather accurate Real Time Clock. Obviously the main flaw of it being that it was reset; but the timer was still accurate and didn't differ between systems. It is actually an issue with how the games were programs. Programmers usually only testedo n one machine, so if it was too fast, they just stuck a loop that executed an arbitrary number of times until the speed was reasonable. Of course on later machines, those loops were often inconsequential, and the entire thing ran far faster than desired. eg. even then the programmers could have programmed it to only ever run the game at a maximum of, say, 30 fps, but instead they designed it to perform, say, 50000 empty loops each game "tick". This worked to make the game playable on the machines they tested it on, but new machines executed all instructions faster and those 50,000 empty loops that cause a 50ms "delay" to make the game playable would become shorter and shorter until within maybe 2 CPU generations it was essentially gone. However, turning to this programs issues. Normally, the way a recorder of this sort would work is typically to record Actions, and then play them back. This is naturally kind of obvious... but the way this works is dependent on the Win32 API Function, SendInput. SendInput basically takes a group of events. These events include information, such as the specific time of the event. HOWEVER: One caveat of the API is that, while many "Recorder" programs seem to think so, the SendInput API does not "delay" any input. In fact, Every single message is posted to the active WINDOW or where needed (faked mouse movements, keyboard information, etc) the "time" information is send as part of the message, but very few applications really care about that. To add to that, a lot of Recorder Programs use a direct offset (for example, their first input might have 0 as the time field, the next 500, etc.) but the time field is actually the complete time of the event. Depending on the program, playback might be faster because the application is using the older "idle loop" method, and was really only tested on one or a few machines on which it works properly. Thanks BC for the info. I remember adding loops in Basic many years ago to slow down some feaures of games etc where you wanted to see the transition of movement vs a flash across the screen etc, so that for example my first game I ever made in 1987 called Lunar Escape showed an "A" as a ship land on a moon made up with a bunch of "*" in a circle formation to be as simple as can be as ASCII before I learned how to play with sprites etc when taking Basic in high school in 1990 and tapping the teacher foreverything they could share with me on Basic until I exhausted everything they could teach me and moved on from there to my own research to learn more. Digging online I found some interesting info regarding timers and multicore CPU's such as: Quote On Windows machines you can use QueryPerformanceCounter() and QueryPerformanceFrequency() to get accurate timing. Note that on dual-core AMDs you will also need to use SetThreadAffinityMask() or risk getting some strange results. from: http://cboard.cprogramming.com/cplusplus-programming/128902-keeping-program-running-constant-speed.html My CPU is an AMD Athlon II x4 620 2.6Ghz .... so the mention about "Note that on dual-core AMDs you will also need to use SetThreadAffinityMask() or risk getting some strange results." Was rather interesting as for all other systems I have used the software on in the past have been Intel CPU's or single-core AMD's like Athlon XP 2800+ and Sempron 145 But as far as Real-Time Timers, it was my understanding that programmers used for time sensitive programs like games etc starting in the mid to late 1990's, what were almost like checkpoints in the programming in relation to system time in seconds to keep programs at bay to run at what could be perceived as a constant to the eye with dynamic cpu cycle wasting loops (or) dynamic sleep duration timers that can be adjusted to ms precision on the fly so that the same game runs at the same speed no matter if its a C++ created program run on a Pentium II 450Mhz or a Core i7. ( But eventually, I could see you reaching even with a dynamic delay a limit to how much you can continue to slow a program among ever faster hardware, especially as the OS will continue to move forward to support the hardware and eventually you would reach a point of incompatability for lack of supporting DLL's etc. ) I suppose what program was ever intended to last forever...LOL ( Maybe Real-Time Timer is the incorrect statement for programs that run at the same rate among different hardware...) I am going to contact JitBit and see what they suggest to keep it running at the same rate as recorded if the XP compatability mode doesnt cure it. And until the rate of execution can stay at a constant and not run faster than originally recorded, I do have an older 2.4Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo that it runs fine on and can use that. Quote from: DaveLembke on November 27, 2012, 03:36:36 AM Thanks BC for the info.Yes. That is what I mean. And, to be honest, that is the wrong way to do it, and it was the wrong way to do it then as well. a better way would be to implement a delay. for example, we could have this one. This is probably not runnable since I don't 100% remember everything about the old BASIC. I'm not sure if the older BASIC supported SCREEN 13 (320x240 with 256 colour) either. Code: [Select]50 CURRX% = 0 75 CURRY% = 120 80 SCREEN 13 100 REM --START OF GAME LOOP-- 150 CLS 200 CIRCLE (CURRX%,CURRY%),80 300 CURRX% = (CURRX%+1) MOD 320,120 400 REM Fake 'Timer' to slow down 500 I=0 600 IF I=1000 GOTO 100 700 I=I+1 800 GOTO 400 This (probably doesn't work, but let's assume it does for the sake of argument) would move a circle from the left side of the screen to the right side. The actual rate would be timing dependent. This is, basically, Wrong. You won't see anything at all on anything faster than a 8088 with that delay, so you would either need some sort of freaky database to find out how fast each machine is, calculate it using some weird algorithm, or just give up and let your programs remain unrunnable and open the market for products like MoSlo. Alternatively, you could use TIMER: Code: [Select]50 CURRX% = 0 75 CURRY% = 120 80 SCREEN 13 100 REM --START OF GAME LOOP-- 150 CLS 200 CIRCLE (CURRX%,CURRY%),80 300 CURRX% = (CURRX%+1) MOD 320,120 400 TIMESTART=TIMER 500 IF TIMER-TIMESTART > (1/20) THEN GOTO 100 600 GOTO 500 Again, untested, dunno if it works, etc. Basically this just uses the TIMER function, which uses the computer's built in RTC. maybe 10 percent of games written back then actually used this approach; most of them, sadly, used the "just have an idle loop" method. Others took the idle loop method and have weird algorithms to get the delay to something that will work on the machine, these often crash with Divide Overflow errors on faster machines, since they usually rely on getting the time it takes to perform a certain number of iterations and use that as a divisor, of course on fast machines the difference can actually be zero. Quote My CPU is an AMD Athlon II x4 620 2.6Ghz .... so the mention about "Note that on dual-core AMDs you will also need to use SetThreadAffinityMask() or risk getting some strange results."The problem is a result of some Power Management feature of the Athlon. I'm not 100% and this is mostly a guess (educated or not, take your pick ), but the process for using the function is to use QueryPerformanceFrequency, and then use QueryPerformanceCounter. However, it's possible that the program/thread is running on a core that is "speedstepped" down (or whatever the AMD tech is called); this results in the Frequency being lower, since it's clocked down. But then in the meantime, the program might be switched to the other core after a context switch, so QueryPerformanceCounter() is run on the other one; this results in odd results, because you are practically trying to compare the timing and clock frequency values for two cores, and they aren't necessarily running at the same clock speed. I don't think this is a problem for later AMD CPUs or Intel CPUs. Quote But as far as Real-Time Timers, it was my understanding that programmers used for time sensitive programs like games etc starting in the mid to late 1990's, what were almost like checkpoints in the programming in relation to system time in seconds to keep programs at bay to run at what could be perceived as a constant to the eye with dynamic cpu cycle wasting loops (or) dynamic sleep duration timers that can be adjusted to ms precision on the fly so that the same game runs at the same speed no matter if its a C++ created program run on a Pentium II 450Mhz or a Core i7. I know you mean this in jest, but the "It works now" attitude is actually the reason for a lot of problems in the software industry. For example the original decision to use only 2 digits in the year was made when the year 2000 was the distant future. Quote ( Maybe Real-Time Timer is the incorrect statement for programs that run at the same rate among different hardware...)They run at the same rate because they use the System's RTC. Rather than waiting, say, 1000 iterations, they actually wait 1/20'th of a second (or whatever). For example, you can run the DOS version of DOOM on a modern PC (booting into DOS mode), and it will not run faster than 30fps. The game is capped to never run faster than 30 fps, and if it runs slower than 30fps, timing still works; eg at 15fps gameplay isn't half speed, but rather you simply have fewer frames per second. Much like games today. (well, most games today). Quote I am going to contact JitBit and see what they suggest to keep it running at the same rate as recorded if the XP compatability mode doesnt cure it. And until the rate of execution can stay at a constant and not run faster than originally recorded, I do have an older 2.4Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo that it runs fine on and can use that. If you are using a multi-core machine, you might try disabling any power saving CPU features. That is what causes the issue (I think) with the AMD CPUs mentioned, so it might still be a problem with modern machines. Thanks BC for getting down to the specifics and taking the time to code up old basic for example purposes. I very rarely work with old Basic anymore as for C++ for stand alone programs and perl for quick scripts has been my current choice of language or scripting. Going to try the disabling of the power saving CPU features and see what happens. I know this is enabled because I have a desktop gadget that shows the CPU status of cores, memory use, and clock rate and it doesnt run at 2600Mhz all the time, but speed-stepped to slower to like 800Mhz when idle with Win 7. For the fact that the stepping changes on the fly from 800Mhz, 1200Mhz, 1600Mhz, 2600Mhz ( or some similar stepped rates ). I never even thought about the speed-stepping as part of the equation that could influence the execution of the macros timing. Was thinking that if it calls for more processing power it gets what it wants without starving for CPU cycles or being fead too many. Just like the other processes on the fly get what they need for processing power to get the job done quick and then go back to a processing crawl until summoned again to crunch something else. In the meantime I created a quick macro in relation to that game on my netbook running Atom D510 dual core 1.66Ghz with 1GB Ram and Windows XP Home SP3 and everything is running at the correct speed in relation to the rate at which it was recorded at. The only thing that was almost a problem was accessing everything within that small 10.1" display without adding scroll up/down to the routine. Found a position that worked and marked an index card to the browsers scroll down slider bar position of Firefox for proper alignment for the next time the macro is run, the point and click routines line up with the objects on the screen in the game that it has to select/target. While some people would probably just move to another computer that behaves such as the netbook. I am still going to see if shutting off the CPU power saving features fixes it in case there is an application that needs the more powerful CPU in the future, I might then have a solution for it in which it behaves. And then when the project is done, re-enable the power saving CPU functions so its not running idle at 2.6Ghz and creating unnecessary heat and power consumption. |

Solve : MyMailList - ?Changing Font size on Mailing Labels? |
|
Answer» Recently I installed MyMailList & Postage Saver Delux program on my computer, and I've been trying to figure out how to change the Font size that actually prints on Small Mailing Labels. I can get it to change the Font & Font size in the Data form, however, that information doesn't seem to transfer to the label that gets printed. It looks LIKE it is about a Font size 8 or 9 which leaves plenty of room on the labels for a larger size that would be easier to read. I've looked through the book that came with the program and I can't find anything. I tried going on line for help and apparently the program needs JAVA, which I have, but apparently it isn't recognizing it and keeps trying to make Internet EXPLORER my default browser. I use Firefox. Thank youI'm not familiar with MyMailList & Postage Saver Deluxe. So, I'll ask, do you have Microsoft Word on your computer? Yes, I've got Office Home & Student 2007.Well, you can create, and save, mailing labels with Word. To open a template for labels, open Word and click the Office Start Orb (the round icon in the upper left corner) and click New. In the New Document panel that OPENS, you'll see a list of templates in the left column. Click Labels and then click Mailing and shipping labels. Make the appropriate selection on the next screen and proceed. If you have a label package such as Avery 8160, you can choose a template that's designed to work that product. |
