I don't really know what's going on, I don't have a graphics card so that may be the reason for this happening but I'm not really sure. I'm needing it for school though so anyway. The Silverlight plugin keeps crashing and I don't know how to figure out why. I'm trying to find something on here but no forums contain info that I can find. I'm also looking in the silverlight page and still nothing. If anyone can help please do!Are you trying to use it with IE (Internet Explorer) or another browser?  If IE, what version?

http://www.microsoft.com/getsilverlight/Get-Started/Install/Default.aspx shows a SYSTEM requirement of 512MB of RAM.  So, adding RAM might solve the problem. Another thing might be that your processor speed is also below the minimum requirements. Try using the version 2.0 in this link INSTEAD - http://www.oldapps.com/silverlight.php which your current hardware meets the minimal system requirements.

Solve : word perfect lightning?

i am running a WORDPERFECT X5 program for my word processor. this version comes with a pdf viewer called word perfect lightning.  most times everything goes as planned and i can VIEW the content without problem.  sometimes though, i small box APPEARS saying the site is "password protected" and wanting me to type a password.  well, i have no idea what password it wants, as i am only TRYING to open a restaurant menu for christ's sake.  has anyone ever experienced this problem?  and what do i do to either avoid, or solve this problem??Try it with a freebie called Foxit Reader...lightweight but very good app.

PS: I just thought of something...pdf's have the optionof password protection...are you SURE lightning isn't a pdf editor ? ?
That would trigger a password prompt.

At any rate DLoad and try Foxit.It could be it's asking you to type in the password per-emptively if you want to edit it. I would say go for Foxit, it's a great reader. I would disable the browser plugin it asks to install, a lot of drive-by malware is delivered through PDF now.i have another idea. if i change my default pdf viewer to adobe, then the problem is solved. right?  if i wanted to keep word perfect as my word processor and change my pdf viewer from lightning to adobe, how would i do that?Right clik a PDF file in Explorer...
Select Open With...then point it to Adobe Reader in the dropdown list...
Then check the box "always use this app to open this filetype"...

Solve : I can't uninstall Vidalia?

So I was trying to uninstall Vidalia today and now I'll probably never be able to uninstall it.

Because some things popped up from my Comodo Firewall and it said something about malware activity so I freaked out basically and kept hitting "Block" on my Comodo Firewall.

Now... I can't uninstall Vidalia. Whenever I select and attempt to run the Uninstall.exe for Vidalia it says this:

"NSIS Error. Error launching installer"

Is there any way to fix this so I can uninstall Vidalia or am I properly screwed now?

I'd really appreciate any help with this.

That seems a little ridiculous IMO.

Is there another way to uninstall it?Sounds like all that firewalling broke the uninstaller or a dependency in some way. Remove all entries in comodo's firewall that block vidalia, and try it again. If it still FAILS you can try re-installing vidalia to fix the uninstaller. Revo does a good job of cleaning up leftovers from uninstalls, but the free version won't fix a broken uninstaller (if that's even possible).It seems that Vidalia is associated with Tor Project : https://www.torproject.org/docs/faq.html.en

I'm not really entirely sure how to do that either though. I suppose if I don't have any other choice, I'll install that program and uninstall it that way.You could also try booting to safemode...turn off Comodo...re-boot and try and uninstall it from safemode.Alright. I'll install that program and uninstall Vidalia that way. Doing it this way is a pain in the you-know-what, but, like I said, I obviously don't have a choice.

Why? Installing it once already MADE me worried that it would screw up my computer. Should it just show up in revo uninstaller?

Did you try my method in Post #7 ? ?Alternatively, you can try Revo's "Hunter Mode"If it doesn't show in revo, then it's not stuck in the add/remove programs list. I'd just go to msconfig if it is an autostarting app and disable it, then delete the files in program files. If you want it 'nice' you can then go in regedit and go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER, software and look for Vidalia (or company name) and delete it. If it's not there, then go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE instead, then do the same as above.

After all this, you can also run a reg cleaner, although many people will advise against it. It really isn't necessary.

I am running Win 7 Enterprise on a network with a local file server that runs Win Serv 03. I have REPORTED this to the local helpdesk, but unfortunately I am on a military installation, and they are clueless.
In one of the many folders on the servers, viewed with Windows Explorer, I could see about a dozen folders. There was one that was empty and not needed, so I selected it, and clicked the 'delete' key. A quick popup message said 'deleting 2.12 GB...', and now they are all gone.
I have looked in the recycle bin and they are not there.
I have done a 'search' for some of the missing subfolders on the network drive where they were; none found

Any ideas how I can GET my folders, and the files within, back?The files were probably hidden.

In the Recycle Bin, click Organise > Folder and search options > View > Show hidden files, folders and drives. Click Apply, Ok and then refresh the page to see if they're there.thanks for the try kpac, but no joy.

just tried it...the site is blocked on this military base. Can't access it.

Seems to be one of the few programs that offer recovering files deleted on shares.I can get to the server, log on as administrator. I can search on google, look at the weather channels, etc, but certain sites (websites) are blocked by the Army, including that recuva.

This diskeeper site requires money...hahaha, not a chance....the data isn't worth that. Its a different situation working IT on a military base

Before you find out the problem with your computer, you need to backup your data so that the deleted files won't vanish thoroughly again...Try AthTek data recovery, it will help you with that.

Alright, so my Mom has a COMPAQ laptop that she uses for her normal stuff, checking email, weather, solitaire, the little things. But my nephew and nieces often come over and use it.

Well, she tried to sign herself in (Her account is PASSWORD protected) and what'll happen is she'll type it correctly, it'll say Welcome, and then a few seconds later say "The RPC Server is unavailable", shortly after it will actually reboot her system and bring her back to the sign in stage.

Shes RUNNING Windows 7 Home Premium. Does anyone know a fix for this problem?Have you NEVER heard of GOOGLE?

Because you know, everybody who logs onto a help forum looking for help knows what to do exactly, and has the knowledge to navigate a computer as much as you do. I'm also sure they want your attitude when replying. Well, I did a Google search, and I can't say that anything exactly leaped out of the screen at me. After a bit of sifting through results to do with networking, I found these steps:

I appreciate this type of thing may not be something that a non-techie type of person would feel like trying, and I would think that a visit to a computer repair place could be the safest solution. if your mother has files she wants to keep, make sure they try the above first and don't just reinstall Windows.

Does anybody have any ideas for a help desk ticketing program that is either free or comes with a trial period? Another place has suggested help desk software from IssueCentre and another thought Kayako's would be best. Would any others suit my needs?Only one I am familiar with is Intuit's Track-IT. I used this at my last job to manage our IT departments management of about 30 servers and 300 workstations at 6 sites and IT employees assigned to work orders etc. Track-IT has a neat tool that allows for you to run a hardware audit on hardware and keep a profile so that you can quickly locate which systems are at the end of their life cycle or could be an issue with roll out of a software package such as in our accounting department that required 1GB Ram minimum and we had Pentium 4 ( 1.5Ghz to 3.0Ghz )workstations RUNNING XP Pro SP2 at the time on 256 and 512MB Ram. So I had to perform a Ram upgrade on about half the systems by pairing up 2 x 512MB sticks from 2 systems to 1 system and then upgrade the other system with 1 x 1GB Ram stick to save money VS buying like 8 x 512MB sticks to upgrade 8 systems at 512MB to 1GB.

Track-IT use to have a 30 day trial period, but it comes at a cost to keep it. We had Enterprise Edition which I think was $3500, they have cheaper less featured/licensed EDITIONS that are cheaper, but I think the cheapest version is like $500.OTRS is the one to go for: http://www.otrs.com/en/

This is related to a project that I posted about in Computer Programming, BUT a seperate issue that wouldnt have fit the linearity of the initial INFORMATION request so I posted this here as a seperate issue. The purpose of this function is to read in from the schedule sheet the start time and OT designation and code 1 thru 20 to add rules that would be later used in RELATION to the other post. Was not expecting the escape character to fail to work, so I figured I'd post here to see if anyone can point out what i am missing. On the Schedule sheet C5 is populated with *. I tested this bu CHANGING * to X and changed ~* to X and it reported back with 17. Tried * by itself as "*" and it didnt like it, so I set it back to "~*" and figured I'd post here.Not sure what you're trying to do here and I'm too lazy to look up the LOOKUP function right this second, but you may be able to use VLOOKUP instead. VLOOKUP takes a range of data in the worksheet and uses that as the lookup table. I'll check into the LOOKUP function and see if I can figure something out.The point of this is to assign a code such as 17 to a cell on sheet 3 if at sheet 1 in C5 there is an asterisk in that cell. Makes for making the rules easier with IF the value is 17 do this ELSEIF 18 do this etc. Will make another part of this project easier by looking for numeric values vs string matching. So its like casting a string into an integer I guess, but the escape character ~ tilde is not working so it cant find * when using ~* as "~*"

Was thinking that LOOKUP function was going to be easy in that it would AVOID having to use a lengthy IF statement chain to assign a value to a cell based on the targeted string info.

Was hunting around in google search and found this and thought of how much easier it is to assign a different value to a matched value so if you had A, B, C, D and 1, 2, 3, 4 and the cell on sheet 1 at C5 was populated with B the cell with this formula on sheet 3 would show a value of 2

This may be part of your problem. Also, I've never heard of ~ being an escape character before, so I searched and found this article. The way I understand it, the ~ escapes those characters only in excel's filters and searches, but not, say, the LOOKUP function (which uses regular expressions).

Solve : How do I get around the win2 error message to download new programs??

I've been trying to download itunes and skype, but when I try to run it I get the "this is not a win2 application" error message. I saw that this could be caused by me having an older version and windows and it not supporting it but I wanted to know if there is a way to get around this. Thanks.

There are many different reasons why you are getting this. You stated you are using windows 7 but what bit version 32 or 64 bit. The biggest reason for getting this is from downloading a program / software for the wrong version of windows here is some info from MS for you on this.

Getting the error: Not a valid 32-bit application can have many causes:
I have listed some of them below.

File is corrupt, bad, or missing.
- If the hard disk drive is corrupted or bad it can cause working programs to fail either because not all the data can be read from the hard disk drive or because the program has become corrupted while on the drive. Run scandisk and defrag on the hard disk drive to check for any potential ERRORS.
- If you're running the program from a shortcut on the computer, verify that the program is still on the computer. In some cases if the program is no longer installed on the computer you may get this error.

File is not designed for your version of Windows:
- If you're trying to run a program that is not designed for your version of Windows you may get this error.
- Although many older programs designed to work in older versions of Windows will work with new versions of Windows, unfortunately, not all programs will work.
- If the program is an older MS-DOS program or early Windows program you may get this error.
- If the program is designed for a 64-bit version of Windows and you're running it in a 32-bit version of Windows, it will not work and generate this error.

File is a virus, worm, or other malware file.
- This error can be generated by a file that is a virus, worm, trojan, or other type of malware file. Often, this will be caused because the virus scanner installed in the computer will not allow the file to be installed or run. Try scanning the file to verify it is not a virus and/or infected.

Hardware incompatibility.
 - If you're getting this error during the installation of a program it's also possible that the CD-ROM drive or the drive you're installing the program from is not compatible with Windows or has drivers that are not compatible with Windows.
- Download the latest drivers for your CD drive or other drive from the computer manufacturer or from the hardware manufacturer. (Microsoft does not make driver for other hardware)

Solve : Java is bugging me!?

I am having a big problem with Java. Each time I try to open a Java applet, the applet goes grey and I cant even open it.

I tried uninstalling java and then re-installing it. I also tried JavaRa. On the software end, everything looks clean and software is the most recent ones. When I try running the applet, all I get is a grey screen and a Error saying : jreVerification.class

When I click the Deatils button, it says

So does someone get any ideas as to how to solve this? As for browsers, I have tried Chrome, MOZILLA, IE, Rocketmail, Safari, Opera just to get the same resukts. I have also tried both the online and OFFLINE download version, and the same thing happens.

Just a heads up: I use Windows 7 - and also, I am kinda noob at these
Also, I did try the Java verification, and it shows a 'loading' animation with a grey box below reading 'Error'. Its when I click that I get, jreVerification.class

Please help Download the offline version instead here http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp and make sure to remove old versions using JavaRa.

I did everything I could including turning off firewall, disabling UAC and everything, but none worked so far.

All browsers are showing the same errorThis looks like a bad applet, or your computer isn't properly downloading the jar or class file. What website is this you are accessing? Actually I am sure the Applet looks good because It worked till YESTERDAY night. Then I slept and after I woke up and logged in, it wont work.
It should be a problem with my computer because for everyone else the applet works. I just now did that and restarted my browser. I now see that the error has changed BACK to jreVerification.classAre you logged in as an administrator? I saw a mention of not having admin rights sometimes being the problem. If you are logged in as an administrator, I'm not sure what else could possibly cause this problem.  Yes, there is only one account for my laptop and that is the admins

I have tried to uninstall java on my computer.  When looking in the control panel, java is gone.  However when I look under the start menu and search for files two java files appear.  When I try to delete it gives me the following error:

Then you can download the whole java installation package from here http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/sunjava.html#.UEvsElLg2Co when you are the site scroll down and look on the left side of the page to download it. After you have java installed update it to the newest version to do so open the java control panel and then click on the update tab and you will see the update button.

In the website for Fototagger, http://www.fototagger.com/, one sees OBJECTS linked by lines to TAGS. In an EXAMPLE in TOUR : http://www.fototagger.com/home_users/product_tour/tag_image/, the lines are shown to have blue squares at either end. In THAT photo, those squares are quite useful. When using the software, the squares show, whether appropriate as in the TOUR picture, or INAPPROPRIATE as would be in the website picture. 'How to remove those squares ?' has been asked in the Fototagger forum, years ago, with out an answer. Solve : unable to print photo from MS Outlook email attachment - help??

I have another question: Last week I set up MS OUTLOOK for Mom, GOT her email back, and now she got a photo of our great niece as an attachment (I believe) in her LATEST email from my sister, and Mom wants, she tried to print this photo out, she even used her Lexmark 8300 inkjet printer's desktop interface (it even has a shortcut on her desktop, I think its a suite for different things that you can do with this printer) but she got a dialogue box wizard to install a fax, and then she got a message that says to install the printer, but the printer is already installed, otherwise it would not be printing documents (TEXT) which it already does.

How do I get this printer to print out MS Outlook email photo attachments?

This is normal when you or she RUNS the MS fax and picture viewer for the first time. It is not really installing a printer it is setting up a add-on / plug in that all.

The steps to set that up is different on what operating system you have. But really you just run through the couple of windows and you are done with it.

Hi, I was wondering how I could record my own voice to be repeated back to me (I'm revisin for a french SPEAKING exam, and want to learn it, they say listening to it repeatedly helps) DO you need to DOWNLOAD anything? Have you got a microphone? For language work a headset (headphones with a microphone) are a good idea.

i can see what you need is a voice repeater to repeat the RECORDING that you make instead of a recorder that can only record your voice, am i right? Thus the windows built-in app can not help...
As for me, i use AthTek voice repeater to learn my SPANISH, it can change the playing speed and repeat your voice. It IS a useful tool for me to learn Spanish. I hope it can help you to learn French...

Solve : how to delete itunes duplicates??

id really like to clean up my itunes library, but ive got a stupid-huge amount of music. using the "display exact duplicates" option, i have in the thousands of duplicates. My total library is far too large to effectively "backup" as apple recommends, so im a little hesitant to use some of these scripts that are available. As for the physical music location, some of it is "track" duplicates from itunes, but others are actual file duplicates. All the duplicates seem to have been added at virtually the same time, so i cant sort the library by "date added" and simply delete half of it. Does anyone have an idea of how i can get rid of some of these other than doing it ONE by one?

EDIT: is there a way to maybe uninstall itunes for good and re-import everything? I did the simple uninstall method before, but when i reinstalled it itunes still had all the duplicates so somewhere it seems its saving its library information. i have far more "track" duplicates than file duplicates it seemsIf as you say you can bring up the list in a manner that allows a large sequential grouping, Can you not by holding your cursor over the 1st one to be deleted and while still holding your left mouse key down continue down the list as far as the consecutive individual items are until you reach the last one you wish deleted thereby highlighting them all? Then using you delete key on the keyboard delete them to your recycle bin (which you should then empty the recycle bin). Have you tried that method? If the DESIRED to be deleted items are spread out you can use that process where they are grouped. truenorthGood evening kamikaze33 and welcome to CH

What truenorth posted should work and maybe this might work for you also if you have say mutli lines of songs (in a row) etc to delete.
 
You CLICK on one to highlight it and hold down the left shift button don't let go of the shift button and then click on the say 10 duplicate / consecutive songs down and all items will be blue / selected and then delete them?

If you need to skip ones in-between instead of using the shift button just use the control button (ctrl) and click on the ones that you want to get rid off.

Apple recommends sorting them by "date added," thereby effectively splitting the list in two, enabling one to SHIFT+CLICK and delete half the library. Unfortunately, these doubles were all added at the same time virtually so i cant really think of any other way to DISTINGUISH them to select half of them at once Unless you can by some parameter group the ones you want to delete (maybe in multiple smaller groups) i see no other way than the tedious route. You let things get out of hand and now you will have to pay the piper.Good luck,truenorth

Solve : DirectX unable to install?

So Battlefield 2142 tried to update directx, then it said error make sure you have the latest directx installed.
So I went to microsoft and GOT the directx web installer, and it downloaded the update from april 2006 but when it tried to install it said error check the direct x (something something) log (something) and (something) directx (something) (some file extension) in the windows folder.
I did and the dxerror says this:

So whats the PROBLEM?It sounds like you are installing a old version. I would uninstall direct X from your system and then install the newest version.

Longest Post of the Month Finalist...I agree with Spoiler that it looks like you should uninstall the directx first, but i am not sure if 'the latest version' means the newest version or some other version. In case you need to rollback directx or undo it, try to use a third party software, let's say, Reinstall DirectX EZ. It super annoying to see the directx errors shows again, isn't it !

hey guys
i just built a new desktop in the last few days and i splurged and got 3 monitors. Im trying to set them up on amd's Eyefinity and am having a heck of a time haha
i can get eyefinity to recognize all 3 screens, but its only letting me create a display using 2?
Also, under control panel, windows wont have anything to do with the third monitor. It also shows up, but cant save the settings for a 3-display setup.
2 of the monitors are connected via DVI, and the third is hooked up to displayport.
I can MAKE any combination of a 2-monitor display i want, just not 3.

heres my system specs:
intel core i5-3570K CPU 3.40 GHz  3.80 GHz
8GB ram
64 bit OS
ASUS HD7850 series
(am i missing anything else?)

That's a special graphics card, note it has 2 DVI outputs & 1 Display PORT, & takes up 2 slots.  What kind of card do you have?  Most have a 1-VGA, 1-DVI, 1-HDMI on 1 card.  When they are on 1 card, you can use only 2 of them.  I think it's an issue of no more than 2 monitors on 1 slot due to bandwidth limitations of the PCI-e slot.

I see your AMD reference & the minimum for that series is 3 displays.

And yes it can be done on your video card, if windows / AMD Catalyst is seeing all three and if the display adapter is active cable. Is the cable one piece or are using a cable and a adapter to make the connection.

They just have to be set as display #1 and then combine them if you want to use them all as one big monitor is that what you want to do?

i got it all working today! turns out my displayport adapter was passive. Solved it by picking up an active adapter for $3 more! absolutely loving the 3 screens now!

PS: commando, for future reference, i guess things have changed a bit since you tried? to confirm, im now running all 3 screens, 2 via DVI and the third via the ACTIVE displayport adapter, from one card and everythings working great!

OPENING a word doc in any OS makes no difference. You just need the correct version of MS word. If you need to read a doc that was created in word 2007 if you do not have word 2007 then you can get the converter pack that MS offers so you can read but you will not be able to edit them you can get it from here http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=3

If the doc was created in word 2003 or earlier you need to have that version of word to read it.

Anyways, no. that will NOT work correctly. If it does work, it has to do with how Office files are handled. If you can't open a docx file because you don't have that version of word, changing the file extension won't do anything.

Recently, I downloaded a file called EZVID onto my laptop. I did my research and neither norton nor virustotal detected anything weird. So i went ahead and installed it. Its not that, i cant physically move the mp3 files off the hardrive or add them to itunes off the hardrive. I get a permissions error, only some of my music files are marked as encrypted, those without the encryptions i can move,copy and add to itunes fine, its just the ones that are 'encrypted' i can do sweet FA with. Anymore ideas, did itunes do this to the files on my old computer?If the files are encrypted there's nothing you can do.Can I not access the certificates somehow, i have the hardrive from the old computer in an enclosure are then not stored in there somewhere?

Hello everyone I need your help!

I have windows 7 and have just tried to install a program (disk drive) which is used for helping with passing a driving theory test. As the program was loading the COMPUTER then started shutting down to add an unrelated update. Once the computer was back on the theory test icon was in programs. It open up though and you can see it wasn't fully installed. It is just writing, no colour and most of the links do not work. I would REINSTALL the program, but when I go into 'control panel' and 'uninstall a program', the program is missing from the list. There is also no uninstall option when I go into the program folder through the 'start' menu. I need help please Reinstall it...it will overwrite the incomplete install...Or just remove the remains where ever you can find them. Windows is FULL of junk that never gets uninstalled, you don't KNOW the half of it.I agree with Raptor.

I have a user with Outlook 2003 and on an Exchange 2010 server. Emails do not come into the inbox until a send/receive is done. Mailbox otherwise is ok.

Checked send/receive settings and all seem ok..deleted the local profile and reconfigured the Outlook profile but it makes no difference.

Then found out that Offline was enabled somehow... OOPS... Re-Connect and deal with the pile of eMail that built up without me knowing.

None of this has anything to do with an Exchange account.

And to answer your question, Exchange uses an .ost file, not the .pst file used by pop accounts. Have you spoken with the Exchange Administrator?Hi Allan

You don't know what you're talking about. Exchange uses push, not pull and the .pst file - OR the NUMBER of accounts - OR which one is the default account has nothing to do with anything. Mailbox is definitely NOT offline and connected is in the bottom right hand corner.

Detect and repair did not make any difference and there are no add-ons or disabled items.

Allan..no i haven't spoken to the Exchange admin but this is the only user affected by the issue so i was assuming it's some sort of issue on the local PC/User. I don't know of this affecting anyone ELSE in the company!!
No harm in checking with the admin. He may have to enable a permission for you.

Ok, Basically I'm LOOKING for help with Voice recording when using ASRock Game/Sound BLASTER.

Basically, when MAKING videos with fraps I have found my voice to be extremely quiet, it was not like this on my old system using the same headset so I believe that this is an issue of ASRock Game/Sound Blaster. I have tried a few things such as MIC boost, noise reduction and echo cancellation and none of these seem to work, my voice either distorts or goes extremely quiet with these settings.

I'v also tried turning off the THX Trustudio Pro with no avail.

OK 1st do you have a good back up of your data.

Use F8 key during boot to get into the Advanced Boot Options menu.
From the Advanced Boot Options chose the Repair Your Computer option.

Click Next and login to your administrator account on the computer. Your administrator account is the account CREATED the first time the computer was turned on.

Click Dell Factory Image Recovery and DataSafe options and follow the ONSCREEN instructions. Please keep one thing in mind the DataSafe should work for saving your data but nothing beats have good reliable back up's that you know are good.

If this is not what you are talking about please let us know using this method will restore the PC back to factory condition.

     For most Dell PC's there is not really a restore Disc. There is a Windows 7 Disc and a DRIVER / program disk. If your VERSION of Windows 7 is say Home premium 64 bit you can use any windows 7 HP 64 bit disc and use your COA (25 digit lic number) this will be 5 groups of 5 letters and numbers to install windows 7. But your COA can only be used with what ever version of windows 7 the key is for.

It means the hard drive is failing. You can try Dell's advice here:

It is hard to say,

#1... The burner drive it self my be starting to fail.
#2... There may be to many programs running in the back ground. Shut off nonessential software from msconfig
#3... You could have ended up with a bad batch of disc's
#4... TRY using another program instead of windows DVD maker try LIKE NERO etc. If it still fails than it may be a bad DVD drive
#5... We don't know your PC spec's so maybe it is lacking in system resources.
#6... If the DVD drive is quite a few years OLD because some older DVD drives didn't like minus (DVD RW-R or DVD-R) disc's

Please let us know if there is any other questions that you may have.

      What version of nero do you have maybe I can find a walk through that may help you. But honestly nero is one of the easiest CD burning software. My self I like version 7 and version 7 I am not that crazy about.

     Just as Patio said that you can put them in a password protected folder. You can use a small program like this that works very well http://download.cnet.com/My-Lockbox/3000-2144_4-10789387.html. Just keep one thing in mind once you put a password on it don't forget it. If you forget the password you are stuck

Solve : Microsoft Outlook - Help recovering corrupt PST file?

Hello, I have an 8gb PST file that is corrupt and I'm unable to recover more than 20% of the emails on it.

The file was created in Outlook 2007. I copied it onto a Kingston 64GB flash drive, then reset my PC to factory settings (because it was very slow and had been infected by viruses over the years). After I reset my PC, I copied my files from the flash drive back onto my new configuration. Everything was fine except the PST file. When I try to open it, Outlook tells me it is corrupt or cannot be opened and suggests running scanpst.exe. When I do, it does recover some emails (about 20%) but these are old emails - nothing from the past 2 years.

I have tried lots of 3rd party utilities and none have been able to recover the most recent emails.

Any helpful ideas? Is it possible that the flash drive may have been corrupted when I formatted it from FAT32 to NTFS in order to accept files larger than 4gb? When I right click on the folder that contains the PST file on the flash drive, the properties say "read only". I uncheck and save but when I go back, I still see "read only". Is it possible that the corruption of the PST is related to this perhaps?

Any, any ideas? Would be so appreciated!

I do have a couple of questions for you

My OS is Vista 64-bit. The version of Outlook I had before factory reset was 2007 32-bit. The version of Outlook I have now is 2010 32-bit.

No, I haven't tried scanost.exe because I don't think I have Exchange on my PC. I use Outlook on my home PC so I don't think I have Exchange..but I'm not entirely sure.

I didn't check permissions.. don't know what permissions are. I dragged the Outlook.PST off the flash drive to the folder where Outlook archives and saves PST files (used to be in users/PC/local/Microsoft/Office before factory reset but my new Outlook version seems to save in Documents/Outlook). This resulted in error (file is corrupt, please run scanpst). Since then, I've tried every other possible way of opening the file.. 1) Outlook/File/Import 2) Outlook/Open 3)create a copy of the file on the desktop, then create new Outlook profile and point it to the desktop file 4) import or try to open off the flash drive. All of these give error messages.

I have since found this out. I did spend about a day preparing for the transfer and trying to avoid any issues but none of the Microsoft documentation mentioned the likelihood of issues with larger PST files. Had I had any inkling,I would have archived, created smaller PST files, etc, etc

It's just so impossible to understand why I have all this data here but I can't open it.. how can Microsoft not have a TOOL to open data created in their own program?Good afternoon gc11530 and welcome back

You were not sure that if you had a exchange on your PC, don't worry more than likely you don't most exchange servers are for companies and not home users pc.

How many times did you do the scanpst.exe some times it has to be done (scanning) 3 to 4 times until there is no error, cant hurt to try it.

Now just in-case when you tried changing the read permissions on the PST just follow this:

To resolve this issue, copy the .pst file from the thumb drive and save it to your hard drive. Then, remove the Read Only file property. To do this, right-click the file, click Properties, click to clear the Read Only check box, and then click OK. The Import process should now finish successfully then try importing the pst's instead of comping into the directory that you did if this doesn't work you can try the steps below.

If that doesn't work you can also do to take ownership of the .pst file? In the Window for changing permissions there's an Advanced button towards the bottom click on that. Then click on the Owner tab, then click on the Edit button, then double click on your account name in the "Change owner to" box. Then click OK to exit the dialogs.

Hopefully that will work if not try the steps below.

You can try these steps and maybe it will work. Maybe just maybe it will help (I know it sounds crazy but it may work)

    Start Outlook 2010.
    Click the File tab in the Ribbon, and then click the Info tab on the menu.
    Click Accounts Settings, and then click Accounts Settings again.
    Click the Data Files tab, and then click Add.
    Under Save as file, select Outlook 97-2002 Personal Folders File (*.pst).
    Accept the default name, and then click OK again. Outlook now creates a new .pst file that is based on the earlier .pst file and maintains the ANSI formatting for that .pst file.
    Click Close.
    At the bottom of the navigation pane, click Folder List. In the navigation pane, you now see the new .pst file.
    Drag the information from your existing Outlook 2003 or Outlook 2007 or Outlook 2010 folders to the new .pst file. You can also use the Import and Export Wizard on the File menu to move the information from your existing Outlook 2003 or Outlook 2007 or Outlook 2010 folders to the new .pst file.

    How to Import and Export in Outlook 2010
        Click the File tab on the Ribbon, and then click the Options tab on the menu.
        Select Advanced, and then click the Export tab. The Import and Export Wizard opens.
    In the navigation pane, right-click the new .pst file, and then click Close " file_name ".

The above steps will just copy the PST's so don't worry it should not affect your original ones.

I tried it numerous times. I ran it once but it only recovered a portion of the emails. I then ran it repeatedly until it said 0 errors left. Still recovered just 1/5th of the emails. My original PST file is 8gb. My recovered file after running scanpst (until it says 0 errors) is 1.5 gb. That seems to indicate that about 6.5gb wasn't recovered even after scanpst says 0 errors.

I did this and it didn't work. The strange thing is, after I uncheck the Read Only box, select Apply and then Save, when I go back it still says "Read Only". However, this is the case for every folder on my PC (and every folder on my flash drive) - I've checked a couple. They all say "Read Only" when I right click but I seem to have no problem modifying the files inside these folders.  Maybe this is a global setting that has to be modified for the entire system instead of for each individual folder? But it doesn't seem to have any effect on other folders.. I can open, save, modify files in all other folders that have "Read Only" attribute.

I did check the ownership - it says that Everyone has access and that my current profile is Owner.

Under Save as file, select Outlook 97-2002 Personal Folders File (*.pst).
Do you mean choose the corrupt file and Save as 97-2002 format? I tried that and still get the same message.

I also tried creating a new .pst file and choose the 97-2002 format. I do see the new .pst file in the Folder List, and then I try to import the corrupt file but get the same error message.

I don't necessarily need these emails in the Outlook format. Basically, I need to have access to the content because there was information there that I need to access. Do you think it might be possible to convert this PST file to another format LIKE Word, or Excel, or CSV?why to write all this story if reolution is simple , find repaire pst file in programe files , that takes some time but repaires the pst file .

     OK I have some bad news I have found nothing else to help you, all PST tools are 50-250+ dollars. I know that you said you had bought some and tried them too with no luck. I have a feeling that the virus you had "(because it was very slow and had been infected by viruses over the years)" damaged the pst's.

Have you found any PST repair program that looks promising? I've tried about 6-7 of them without getting more than 20% of my emails. Didn't you already buy some software to try and fix the PST's or was the software just trial software. Just in case you don't know if you all ready have one to fix the PST's most of them will only give you like 5 email & or 20% recovery with out buying there product is this your case with what you already bought? which ones have you tried so I don't bother with them.

Thanks a bunch Mike   These are the ones I've tried. From the information on the website, they are saying that the preview shows ALL the emails that will be recovered. The content of each email is not made available before purchase, but the individual emails and folders to be recovered are shown in the preview. Maybe this isn't true for all of them because I haven't read the instructions carefully:

Also installed Windows Service Pack 2 as I had only SP 1 after the factory reset; didn't make a difference.

      The "gave me a line 52 error" is a Bad file name or number. I think that it is possible the thumb drive may have corrupt the PST. I don't mean this is a mean way as I am not trying to be a wise guy  where did you buy that thumb drive I know that there are cheap knock off's (Like of e-bay) and if this is the case I really don't think you will get any of it back.

The outlook tools you have listed I have used many of them and they normally work great and work magic.

Because i was going to suggest some of them. Because if ones like Kernel & Stellar & Recovery toolbox are great UT.

Maybe some one else on here may have an idea and they will pop in and give there 2 cents.

Your ISP or some online service such as Gmail or Hotmail?Mike, I bought the flash drive from Staples for $70! and I called Kingston and gave them the serial number on it and they were able to verify it.

I get email through GoDaddy and they do save a copy of emails on the server but you have to check off that OPTION and I didn't have it checked off.

   Both ST & Allan are correct and have valid points. In my opinion I have always been happy with 3 different ones depending on the person needs. Avast (free version) & Vipre Internet Security 2012 (paid version) & Malwarebytes (non active scanner & Free). Avast mainly for customer support because even the free version of Avast has one nice feature "Remote desktop" so on PC that have Avast and if they ask for HELP I can remote into there PC and help them. For over all protection I have always liked Vipre. Vipre full suite is one of the cheapest per lic & per year than any other AV suite and it protection is 2nd to none.

    For Kaspersky I know of people that have it and love it. Most of the people that I know of do not like McAfee & Norton but just like in the other post it can be a preference my self I do not like either one. If money is a cost just remember that a free AV is better than not running anything at all. This depend on what you do on-line and how safe you are.

There are a couple of things you may not be aware of using java based chat rooms / java based web sites.

#1... For windows 7 there are 2 different versions 1 for 32 bit and 1 for 64 bit for Java

#2... Go to java to update your java http://www.java.com/en/ if you can not update your java it can be installed from a stand alone java installer http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp be-careful when installing java it will want to install the ask toolbar etc just take that check mark out and continue with the install

#3... If you are still having issues after updating. Then java temp jars may be corrupt. Go to control panel and in the box TYPE java and when the list is complete click on java in the list. Then in the java control panel on the main tab look at the bottom for temporary internet files and click on the "settings" button then look for "delete" files and then you can close all boxes. Then restart your browsers so it can take affect.

Also another bit of info there is java PLUG in / add-on it just depends on what browser you are using so even if you update the java in the control panel you still may have to update the java plug in for Firefox and then check your other browsers.   

99% of the time one of the steps above fix the issue. IF the issue is still there it may an issue with the sever that you are trying to join in so you will need to contact the web site admin, Mike

Solve : Cd burning by dragging?

I have been using the following method for some  time  for burning pictures from my computer (transferred to computer from my digital camera) onto a cd but today it WOULD not work and I would very much like to have advice about where I am going wrong -- PLEASE!

The method:-   1. Insert blank cd in tower  (cd-R not a cd- RW)
                         2.START > MY COMPUTER
                         3.START > MY PICTURES

This is the point where I get stuck as in order to go to MY PICTURES I have to close the window opened at (2) above.

Usually the window headed MY PICTURES pops up obscuring the window headed MY COMPUTER showing the wording MY COMPUTER in faint type.

This is not happening now.  Why?

Usually, I would be able to drag down the window headed MY PICTURES to reveal the icons on the window headed MY COMPUTER.

I would then drag all the pictures to the CD icon and then get a window headed CD DRIVE (E) and sub-headed "Files Ready To Be Written To The CD"

The NEXT step would be to right-click on the icon marked CD DRIVE (E) to reach a dropdown menu where you chose the wording "Write these Files to the CD" to get a window headed CD WRITING WIZARD.

From there the rest was easy.

How have I messed up the whole thing?

Try these steps:

1. insert blank cd
2. start -> my pictures (skip my computer for now)
3. find the pictures you want, and select them like you would to drag, but instead:
4. on the left hand side, click burn these pictures to cd (it may be under a 'picture tasks' menu)
5. if asked, select the cd drive (e) from a list, and click ok, yes, ETC. if necessary
6. start -> my computer
7. right click the cd drive and 'write these files to a CD' like you did before, and finish the process.

These MIGHT not work perfectly and I may have forgotten a step; I haven't used XP for a while. but these should be very close to working.

As to why you are having the problem, sometimes window sizes and locations of my computer, my pictures, etc., get messed up or changed in weird ways.Good evening Guzeppi and welcome back to CH

The OS may look different in this Video because it was done with Vista and not XP. I believe your OS was XP but the steps will almost identical for you.

Solve : original Dell Drivers and utilities cd and a new hard drive?

my hard drive is broke with a 0146 error. so im GOING to buy a new hard drive from dell.if i buy a new one and i have a drivers and utilities disc that came from the computer can use that to get my operating system from the disc to the new hard drive.. or does the operation system come PRE installed on the new hard drive?

Solve : Downloading McAfee...?

Answer» Yep, me again. So I'm trying to download McAfee (haha, thanks now LET's get some help going) and I won't load beyond maybe 46% or so then it posts the  UNABLE TO CONTINUE DOWNLOAD MESSAGE. Reason given ERROR 12152.  I'm sure you know what that is but just in case...

Yes, I have a slow speed but last time I loaded McAfee it took about 6 hours or less. this time it's telling me it will take 99 hr+ to load.  And the time left keeps going from 99 hrs. to less than an hour then back to 99 then little more than 2 hrs. In other words it fluctuates. I'm not sure if that is due to the number of products coming in or it's hitting a snag often.

    If you have a slower internet connection I would go to local store and purchase McAfee or buy it online. The download time that windows tells you will vary and the time will change and go up and down. Just because it may say x amount of time that will change.

The error you are getting is McAfee telling you it is timing out on the download.

Thanks for your reply... what I'm going to do right now is try the remedy for 12152 ERROR. I think it was the Norton Security Scan in my programs that was the stopage, so I uninstalled it. I'll let you know how it goes either way. Mike I have always had a slower modem even on my first download of McAfee, but it didn't take more than 5 or 6 hrs to load the suite. This one is 131937.85KB and I started loading it at around 11:30 yesterday. It never got halfway.

Now even when McAfee scans my comp of its more than 266000+ files it takes only about 9 hours. Anyway, I've gotten rid of NSS and now I'm going to my restart and back to the download. Let's hope it works. This is really wearing on me.

Personally I think not being able to download any McAfee products is a positive, not a negative. They are, in my opinion, awful products and if I were you I would use ANYTHING else.Thank you Allan, however, there are advantages to even what appears to be a disadvantage.

Now, I did indeed uninstall Norton Security Scan from my Programs and Features as indicated in the ERROR 12152. As a result the download went without event and is now complete.

If I may I would like to say something and hope that you guys can tell me why it is.

AOL users are or should be quite familiar with that little pop up asking us if we want to stay on-line, YES or NO. (and that awful notification noise). If you leave your comp unattended for maybe 45 mins or so, it goes off, and some time later if you don't select YES you'll be booted from on-line.

Well I have found that if you open TWITTER (and there must be other SITES) you can leave the comp for as long as you want and that pop up will not come in.  I'm thinking maybe it's because The Twit always has some activity, but can you guys tell me why that is.

    I think I know what you are talking about it is a timer for AOL customers on dial up service if I remember right. Why twitter would affect this I have no idea. Is your AOL account associated with twitter that may be why and see's that as activity.

    I do know that years ago there used to be a little program that took care of the AOL timer and I don't remember what the name was and I think it worked with AOL 6.0 or 7.0 possibly but I am not sure if it will work with the newer versions of AOL.

Hope this helps. Mike      Yeah, the AOL Idle Timer. They say it's associated with the Child Guards and it can't be turned off. Also that it is because so many people are online or trying to come online the phones are always tied up with day long users. Okay, but I pay AOL to be on-line as long as I want without them prompting me whenever I leave my comp for 30 minutes or so.  Plus, I have no child guards on; I have no CHILDREN in my home.

So AOL refuses to turn the darned thing off even with constant complaints over the years; they say it can't be turned off. I say, anything that can be activated can be deactivated.

Is The Twit associated with AOL? I have no idea. I did a quiz about the Twit and I never saw anything about it being associated with AOL. Maybe in the last year as my quiz went up more than a year ago. How would my AOL acct be tied in to The Twit? I can ask someone Twiter if they're under the AOL umbrella.  I'm gonna experiment with a few other sites that have constant posting. I still like learning how and why.

Solve : songs are messed up !!?

hello, i recently was brwsing internet and , downloaded a software GDT3, that had a very peculiar function, i think i WITHOUT fully understanding that, played with it, what it did was it allowed me to lower or increase the sound of frequencies of NOTES that are played in a song, in order to let me  hear only those notes that i wanted to hear and not hear those that i didnt want to hear, so okay i kinda used it couple of times , software is still installed, but since then none of my songs plays properly , like in some i can only hear one instrument playing, or the sound of guitar is replaced by that of keyboard, some dont sound at all, or voice of the singer is coming frm very far (is very LOW), or voice of the singer  is replaced by keyboard ,or some sound really noisy,  no matter in what software i play the song , WMP, vlc ,  , urgent help needed .. I’m attempting to set a cell’s value as follows, I have columns B and c either one (and only one) will contain values. Once I determine which column has data, I need to INTERROGATE it and set values as appropriate.

Pseudo CODE:
If B13 not equal spaces and b13 <= 10000 then set value to 32
else if b13 not equal spaces and b13 &GT; 10000 then set value to 64
else c13 not equal spaces and c13 <= 10000 then set value to 32
else if c13 not equal spaces and c13 > 10000 then set value to 64
 
Tried various iterations such as (to no avail):

Solve : windows media player error C00D11B1?

Ever since I got a new laptop, music ripped from CDs to media player will not play and I get an error message that says 'wmp encountered a problem trying to play this file.'

I have sought advice on windows help and forums etc. and have checked that audio drivers are up to date. Troubleshooter said I have configuration problems - I assume this meant with the internet so I changed it to 'automatically detect settings' but none of this has made a difference. I also don't see how internet could be an issue - when ripping cds I have been able to get album info through wmp's connection to internet.

Please note: this error is the same for ALL ripped music. Downloaded music plays fine.

What are the file types (extensions) of the music files that won't produce sound? What program was used to "rip" them? In your audio controls do you have anything muted? truenorth
P.S. Doing further research on your behalf i have found the following Microsoft site that deals extensively with this error in WMP. While it states to deal with the issue in win 7 it also MAKES references to other O/S so have a look at it to see if anything might work for you.
By the WAY has this audio situation that won't work now ever worked for you? Are your sound card drivers the most CURRENT? Do you have any yellow asterisks or question marks in your device manager particularly related to your sound card?

1) the files were ripped in windows media player. I presume they are therefore in wma format? The properties tabs for these files do not say what format they are in.
2) I have always had this problem with wmp. It is a relatively new computer (c.6 months) and I started having this problem from the first time I ripped music to the library.
3) In my device manager there are no flags on the sound device panel and I have already tried updating all drivers but they were already up to date.

I have followed your link to windows help and may try the advice there for reinstalling all the sound drivers. Their page on the error I'm experiencing 'C00D11B1' I have already been through with no luck/change.

Thanks xPS - I know that the files are playing in VLC because the time bar moves as if it is playing but no sound comes out my speakers. NB - my speakers do work IN GENERAL i.e. sound on video content over the internet, DVDs and other music files.Very much sounds to me that the problem is emanating from the "ripping" with WMP.I would suggest that you install and try another ripper there are many free ones. truenorthIf you want to solve the issue with WMP then you need to go to Add or Remove programs in control panel. There on left SIDE, you will find an option " Add/Remove Windows components" click that and choose accordingly. You can repair WMP. But you need that Windows Disc.

Solve : itunes/music sorting?

hey guys
so ive GOT a LOT of music, some doubles, some improperly named, etc. I was about to start CLEANING out itunes (im on windows, thats why i didnt put this under "Apple"), but figured itd be better to just edit the actual files where they are stored on the computer. I figured id do this because im going to be getting a new comp soon anyways, and id just have to redo it then too.

Im wondering however, if i moved itunes to the same harddrive where all my music is stored, if that would be better? Currently itunes i son a separate drive than my music, and if THINGS crash/whatever, i always have to reimport/change the name son itunes.
Ive NOTICED that having certain programs installed on this external hd (where my music is) lets me just plug-and-play on other computers. Would this work with itunes?Makes no difference whatsoever.

Solve : taking control of slave hardrive?

I've recently taken my old hard drive out of my dead laptop and put it in an enclosure, it works fine except that I cant use the files because apparently I dont own them.
I've done all the things that I think I should, properties>SECURITY>ADVANCED>owner>changed it to my new user name>ticked the LITTLE box about OWNERS on subfolders
THEN come out and go back to PERMISSIONS>change permissions> add 'EVERYONE' and then my user name and tick the little box about inheriting subfolders and such like

AND THE SWEET FA happens, I have a load of new names in the settings but I still cant access anything due to not having permission!

Any help much appreciated.

Did you try taking ownership of them? and once you take ownership you do have to close out the boxes and then re-open to see if your changes took affect
