Bought a Dell Inspiron 660s desktop with WIN 7 Home Premium 64 bit and

am getting Error 1303.  My ACCOUNT has Administrative rights.

Error 1303.  Microsoft Works cannot be installed to the selected drive.

 Type or select another drive, such as drive C or drive D.

During install, it defaults to the following install location:
C:\PROGRAM Files (x86)Microsoft Works/

It has only one HD, and I've installed Works 9 on NUMEROUS XP and Vista

machines w/o a hitch in the past.  If any other INFO is needed, I'll be

glad to furnish it.

Any ideas out there?  Thanks.

I SEEM to be having problems with Adobe SHOCKWAVE Player in GOOGLE Chrome. It seems to keep crashing for no reason, and OFTEN when I'm trying to stream or download a high-quality video.

The latest version of java seems to not be working for playing games on Pogo. I remember a list of previous versions you can download but I can't find it. Can someone guide me on how to uninstall the latest version and reinstall the previous version.

Nice simple one here. I've recently noticed that whenever I copy a piece of text from an internet source Word decides that it should automatically reformat the text to match the previously typed text. This sounds all well and good but it aligns the previous text to the newly inserted text EVEN if I am only copying a single word.

So for example: If I have a paragraph of text in black size 10 Arial and I paste in a word from a title of a webpage that happens to be blue size 24 Calibri Word will helpfully change the entire paragraph to be blue size 24 Calibri.

As you can imagine although funny at FIRST it soon gets tedious. How do I stop word doing this?

Weird my copy of MS Word does not have any other options other than: 'Paste', 'Paste special' & 'Paste as hyperlink'.

Finally worked out that you meant the pasting options that POP up after you paste something, which I can't see and forgot about because I disabled it... Oops. I want word to always ignore source formatting though as I have yet to encounter an situation when I want to keep the source format.

I accidently found the pasting options under: circle button/word options/advanced. So Problem solved.

*Edit: Thanks for the help btw, I wouldn't have found the option had I not been confused by the advise and trying to find the "About" button to make sure I was stating the correct version.

Just decided to try to image my Windows 7 Home OS computer and found out that the Image Utility built into Windows 7 is only for the more featured Pro, Ultimate etc versions as referenced here: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/4241/how-to-create-a-system-image-in-windows-7/

I own 6 licenses of Ghost 2003, but it doesnt play well with Windows 7, and I dont want to buy a new copy of Ghost with lack of features.

Anyone have any suggestions on a Good Way to Image Windows 7 Home to spanned DVD's which might be a free solution?

I like the ease of a bootable disc and pushing clean image build to any drive size like Ghost 2003 offered back in the day with Windows XP Home/Pro, Windows 2000 Pro, etc. Hoping I can do this without having to upgrade to Windows 7 Professional to get the Microsoft Image Feature. From prior issues with Microsoft Backups, I am cautious about going the path of their backup image solution.

I also looked into DD, but all I see is references to cloning Master to Slave drives with DD. No burning bootable spanned images to DVD'sI regularly USE Acronis True Image for my image backups...however it is not Free.
For a Free solution i suggest Macrium Reflect...not a ton of prep and very User friendly.
I SPENT quite some time testing the Free options out there on my benchtest rig and that is the one i settled on.
After installing it 1st thing to do is create the bootable Macrium CD...then test it.
Then you create your image file ...then under Tools make sure to verify the image...takes a bout as long as creating the image but well worth it for peace of mind.
You can then burn the image to CD/DVD media...there is an option in this step to select the file sizes for spanning.
NOTE: I also use my own file names for each image as the default name is a bit cryptic...however includes the date which is handy.
The restore process is a breeze as well and you can usually be back up and running in less than 40 minutes depending on the image size....

I've recently had this machine cleaned by Superdave, what a star, but I'm still getting reasonably regular random re-boots and the occasional BSOD. The re-boots are totally random, sometimes I'm not even at the machine, sometimes I'm clicking onto a different page etc, etc, etc.. The machine will just turn off and immediately turn back on and leave me at my desktop with all progs closed!
This can happen 2 or 3 times in an hour and then not for a week or two, there is no pattern what-so-ever.
I've tested my hardware, as best I can, using MemTest86+ and Windows Memory Diagnostic and everything seems to be fine.
Maybe it's a software issue? Superdave recommended posting here, so I have.
The last two BSOD's were on Oct 24th & Nov 2nd.
Oct 24th gave me the following fault code;
0x00000001 (0x004D0052, 0x00000002, 0x00000001, 0x806E7A2A0)
Nov 2nd said BAD_POOL_HEADER and was fault coded;
0x00000019 (0x00000020, 0x88EF0000, 0x88EF0768, 0x88ED12F8)
Not a CLUE what this all means, but it's driving me mental.
I know you guys are the best, just wondering whether or not anyone would be kind enough to help me.

The BSOD points to missing or corrupt drivers.

 You can also download the ISO image for Seatools, WD DataLifeGuard or Drive Fitness in my signature and burn the image to a CD using IMGBurn also in my signature and boot off of the newly created CD and run the Quick and Advanced tests on the HDD to test the INTEGRITY of the drive.

I have a .pdf file that I would like to edit and I checked on the internet to see what free programs were available that would do that and came up with this one:  PDF Editor 9.0   Are any of you familiar with this program to know whether it is first,  a safe download, and secondly, how well does it work?  Or do you have one that you have FOUND that works well.  It is so seldom that I'd need to do this that it really isn't feasible for me to get the full Adobe program to do this.

So i was cleaning up some old files the "efficient" way and accidentally shift+deleted a bunch of important stuff (...kill me now thanks).
Is there a way to recover them?Check to see if they kanded in Recycle Bin where they can be restored from...but i believe with that method they don't ...and you are prompted when pressed "are you SURE you want to delete ? "

What do you have currently backed up ?If you have no backup of the file(s), you can try using a tool such as Recuva to try to recover the file.they were video and not backed up. ill try that recuva!

• I see that whenever I setup a new email address using IMAP it makes a new PST file, however ideally I'd like to combine all the IMAP addresses into the one PST - is this possible?

My original hard drive failed without warning after I put it into hibernation for 2 days and I am trying to set up a temporal hard drive of 20GB just to utilize for internet access and other things. At first I managed to set it up, but I couldn’t access certain parts of Windows such as Control Panel or even My documents. This was when i had not even installed MS Office or anything else. I then decided to re-install and then the following happened:
When I begin the setup it loads the Win7 files until it gets to the point where the screen goes blue (background) and says ‘setup is loading’. Then the entire laptop goes off. I have checked the hard drive for errors, according to the program HDtune (the free version), there are none. At first I had a USB hub and a wireless mouse hooked to the laptop, so I removed the two thinking the problem came from there. It went off again. So I decided to format the partitions (1 is 100MB and says ‘System Reserved’ fully (NTFS) and try again, to no avail. I then downloaded HDtune PRO which told me I had a problem with the re-allocated sector count (whatever that means, but there was a warning sign next to it) and that 6 sectors were faulty/damaged. (The scan HOWEVER shows me nothing).
Also, I have another laptop T41p which when I start it up gives me absolutely nothing, no BIOS, or IBM splashscreen, fan assembly is running well and it does not shut down. The only issue is the DVD-ROM/CD-RW slot, which doesn’t seem to work.
My SPECS are: IBM Thinkpad T40p, Pentium M, 1GB RAM
The 20GB HD is probably toast that you are trying to use. Each hard drive has a reserved space to use for reallocation of sectors, but if you have used up all this reserved space and still have bad sectors, the best thing to do is get a new or better used hard drive. A good test for that laptop to see if it will stay running or is shutting down for some other reason is burn a CD with Knoppix or another Live Linux Distro and remove the hard drive. Boot the laptop up with this bootable Live Linux OS CD and once its completed with its load process, surf the web, open up Open Office etc and maybe even try out a could bundled games. If the laptop has not shut down by now on its own and is running ok, then I'd say that hard drive was causing the issue with a swap space memory crash causing your system to shutdown or some other GPF which caused shutdown.

The other laptop, i'd plug a VGA monitor into the VGA output and see if you are dealing with a bad laptop display. If still no video try reseating RAM with battery out of laptop and laptop unplugged from power supply. AD as far as bad optical drive you will have to replace that if you plan on using it. You might just find if you have a monitor around that the IBM that appears to be black screen actually works fine with an external monitor, but optical drive is bad. You can then maybe find a similar laptop on EBAY to buy for a parts swap for good display etc or check amazon.com for good used parts. Amazon has come in helpful for lots of used or new oem and non-oem parts.Thanks for the help Dave, I might try out the Linux alternative you mentioned, but I guess that HDD is fried too. It's pretty old. I was only planning to use the 20GB for a couple of months during which I will ready myself for a completely new laptop. This kind of took me by surprise, so I'll have to go for the new one earlier than I thought.

I'm not SURE how to explain this. I HOPE I'm going about it correctly. I've used Nero for years now. Never had an issue until now. I'm running Windows 7 OS. I upgraded to Nero 12 Premium from Nero 11. I noticed that my Movie Files are very different. Some are showing a PREVIEW of the video, others are showing a generic icon like it's not associated with anything. I went into the association options and tried to change them back, yet when I chose the Nero option. I get the same generic thumbnail. I have since emailed Nero with all the info, yet I'm not very CONFIDENT about them helping. I'm wondering if anyone here has any thoughts on how to solve this. I know it's the registry but Not too sure how to go about it, without whiping out my computer. I found a page that seems to list this same issue, Not sure if it's good or not. I am trying to deploy a software to some remote users, I would like to be able to send them a .zip FILE with a .msi file as well as a .bat file. I am trying to create a self extracting zip file that will LAUNCH the batch file within it (which will then install from the msi file). The goal here is to have the user put FORTH as little effort as possible installing this software. Any HELP will be greatly appreciated.

Dload and Run the Flash installer TOOL from their SITE...then re-boot and DLoad and install the latest version from the same site.
Sometimes older versions installed will CAUSE this issue.

I have a Compaq Presario computer with Windows XP pro 32 bit.  I installed a legal COPY of Office 2010 office plus. When I create a new ACCESS database the titlebar on the top has Access 2007. I don't have Office 2007 on the computer. The problem I have is that I can't save a mail merge document in Word using my database. The error message tells me to go to the trust center but with no further instructions. I googled my problem. The solution told me to uncheck all of the boxes and I could save the document. That worked but it only prints the first line in the database. If I don't save the document I can print the whole database.Was Office 2007 installed on that computer prior to installing Office 2010?  If you open Programs and Features, do you see Access 2007 or any Office 2007 components listed there? Office 2007 was on the computer before. When you go to programs it is not there anymore. I removed it when I installed 2010.I think I would uninstall Access and then reinstall it.  See Install or remove individual Office programs and components for guidance on the procedure. 

Edit: My reasoning is that you MIGHT have inadvertently not selected, or unselected Access 2010 when you installed Office 2010 and, therefore, Access 2007 was retained from your previous installation of Office 2007.  And, in the same vein, you might not have fully removed all Office 2007 components when you installed it. Just wanted to mention that I have seen similar issue with an HP Pavilion computer a while BACK with a different piece of software which was Roxio Easy CD Creator 4.0, in which I had an orphan registry entry cause havoc when trying to install version 5.0. The problem was that the HP image that came with that system and restore discs had orphan registry keys for Roxio version 4.0 when version 4.0 never came with that low end Celeron when bought new. ( I guess HP decided to improperly remove Roxio 4.0 from a different build and make that the system image for this lower end model to have this happen. There is no other likely cause for this orphan key issue. ) I had to fix the flawed registry which was part of the HP system image into order to get my CD-Burner to work with Roxio 5 that came bundled with it.

If you find that Access 2007 is not installed and it still thinks that it is... you can try Karenware Registry Pruner http://www.karenware.com/powertools/ptpruner.asp  She created a bunch of neat programs before she passed away and her brother is keeping her site online. This one saved me from hours of headache. I was able to find the problem and remove it, then install newer Roxio 5 to my system and be able to burn CD's

I have backed up my blackberry items with their software onto my computer.  It is save as an .ipd file. 

I would like to find a safe and good software that will convert this type of file, so that I can open it and sort the and save the DATA on my computer.

There are many that I FOUND through Google but I am not SURE which are safe and which are not.

Has anybody tried any of these, and could make a good recommendation?

1. the size is same
2. modify date and time is same
3. the name have same string although not same at all

n many more filter that i forgot

so it just detect any same file with the ATTRIBUTE same or exactly like u select from filter setting. so if u have several same image with same name in plenty of location like in my document, in my local disk d, external drive, then it okay to use this program. but in case u have many picture that u thought are same, then it will became more frustrated in result. but many program offer u preview function that will let u see if the image is actually copy or just another image with same name like if u use digital camera the name always have the camera name n follow by some number right. that will be tricky.

so here i will give multiple choice of what i test n tried before. but always check the file n not just select the duplicate n delete, cause u will sorry after tat. always check the result before select and delete.

Does anyone know of SOFTWARE that will clone one external hard drive to another hard drive. I have tried by attaching both external hardrives  to a computer but Acronis will only find the destination drive and not the source drive. any ideas would be great OjasWhat kind of data is on the HDD ? ?

If not you can hool up only the HDD you want cloned and have Acronis create and save the image to your internal for now...then power down...UNHOOK that external...and hook up the blank external...power up and clone away.

I work for a construction COMPANY where we use SharePoint 2010 as the basis for our document management.  We give named user accounts to subcontractors, owner reps, etc.  What we want to do is create a subsite to house documents for bidders.  We want to create 1 generic username in active directory for these USERS but have some way to track each specific PERSON each time they VISIT the site.  Is there some way to achieve this?  Maybe a form that requires users to SIGN in with their name and company name and date every time they visit the site? Does anyone have any ideas?

I am trying to export my Outlook Express address book (WAB) to a reformatted hard disk on a different COMPUTER. When i try to IMPORT the WAB file from the newly installed Outlook Express on the new computer by navigating to the WAB file on the ORIGINAL hard disk, Outlook Express does not recognize the WAB file. when i copy and paste the WAB file from the original hard disk to Program Files/Outlook Express on the new hard disk the WAB file seems empty but when i boot from the original hard disk on the original computer the address book is in tact when opened. When i try to MOVE the original WAB file to the desktop of the new hard disk the WAB appears as just a short cut.

I'm at a loss as to what to try next

bob Resolved: I first had to export the address book then it became a file named Address book and that file could be imported into the new OE.

Things to look for that can be moved are movies;pics etc. that usually take up a good deal of SPACE...

Hi there. I'm new here so didnt't really know where to put this but here goes. I recently bought a new PC (3.0ghz, 1tb HDD with 8gb RAM). I didnt buy an operating system with it because I was sure I had a disc laying around from my old PC with VISTA on it. I now cannot find this disco so am left with a PC with no operating system. I have Windows 7 on an external hard drive so is there any WAY I could boot that operating system from the external hard drive. I turn it on and all I get is command prompt as expected telling me to boot my operating system. If this is not possible will I be better just burning the iso to a disc then trying it that way? Hi, I seem to be having a issue with a programme I use frequently, it was working like 5 days ago.. and since then it's been weird, I changed no settings that I know of, basically, it's just a normal .exe downloaded from the internet.. it's from the legit site it was created and like I siad it's been working for ages until now.. it just randomly STOPPED.

Basically when I open it.. it runs.. and everything says it's RUNNING.. like the icon on the task bar, (I can hover my mouse over it to see the programme in action), press alt+tab to select it.. But.. it's not on my screen anywhere.. like it's hiding or something? how can I fix this.. this is the only programme THATS doing it.. it doesn't install, it's just a file you download then RUN and it opens.. I've tried downloading a fresh copy and opening and still does the same.. and older release of the programme works fine, no problems, and even though this release I want to use is a beta... it's been working fine before.. so that can't be the reason for it not working.

This is not much proof to go on to show it's open and running, but it's all I could think of.

Hello EVERYONE thanks for reading...  I created a compressed zipped FOLDER so I could password protect some files (under 1 gig... OS is XP home)... I had no idea long this would take... Anyway, I input the password and leave for a while... When I come back I have an error message stating I have damaged or corrupt file... A small percentage of the files are password protected, most are not.  When I try to set up a password for them I get a message that the folder already has a password.  When I try to remove the password I get an error message... When I try to extract everything in it I get an error message.  When I try to move everything out of the compressed folder I can do it for some but not all... When I try to delete what is in the compressed folder I get an error message (The compressed zipped folder is invalid or corrupt) and I can't!

What is the best way for me to fix and or start over?...

Thanks for any suggestions... What version of Windows do you run? What program are you using/how do you compress the files? Please be explicit when explaining your situation as it helps us diagnose and find solutions to your problem.

If you just want to prevent somebody from accessing your files, you're probably better off encrypting them. ZIP encryption is notoriously easy to crack/break and makes the files hard to use and index. I would suggest TrueCrypt (truecrypt.org) for the job.Thanks for responding ninjatex, I did mention the OS is XP home. 
As for program, I created the folder with whatever is on my computer... I went to new folder and one of the options was to create a compressed (zipped) folder... I checked under "All Programs" and add/remove but can't tell what the program is... I am a techidiot ... any thoughts?Compressed folder becomes corrupted when larger than 2 gigabytes

Also XP's ZIP File support will compress more than  65,536 files, but extracting will only extract the first 65536 files.

Also, adding a password requires you to compress the file first, and then add the password. If it FAILED half-way trough the initial compression, it won't have a password.


I think the second part might be relevant. If there are enough files, it might be passing that limit. You can use a third party Archive Program (WinZIP, PowerArchiver, WinRAR, etc) to extract the files properly.Thanks BC... Thanks Soybean.  Yes they are in the chrono order as shown.  The percentiges are results of calculating one days data as compared to the next days data.  After I sent in this inquiry asking for groups that are < and > 10%, I realized it will just be a never ending series of groups unless I specify a time frame such as monthly.  I need to rethink how I want my data to look.  Thanks for responding.  Daytona

I have discovered some old .pxn files on my PC.  I think that they may be graphic files associated with Kodak software.  Does ANYONE know how to open these?They were indeed related to a Kodak app KNOWN as PictureWorks...

I had a copy of EasyShare which I have already loaded.  This didn't help.  I have installed some viewers from the web but most of these didn't open the files.  There was one, Universal VIEWER, that let me open a file as a binary dump.  This displayed a lot of seemingly random text with chunks of old emails dotted about.  The .pxn files I was trying load came from a file recovery run on my PC.  Can anyone offer an explanation about this? I would try this...pick one file and move it to a folder...
Then use a graphics app of your choice to convert it into a well known format such as jpeg ...
Then see what happens.

The other day I was at a friend's house trying to fix her printer (HP deskjet 3653) her PC has XP Home (32-bit). Beyond this I don't know rest of its hardware specs (maybe have to run PC Wizard on it next time I see friend), but when doing the driver reinstall (after having uninstalled the old instance of this same driver prior to doing the reinstall) the driver installer starts out good enough but when the "searching for new hardware" dialogue box comes up (with the "connect your printer" message) and I plug in both the power and the printer's USB CABLES onto the rear of the printer (after having ran the installer a couple of times already with both of these cables disconnected from the printer) nothing happens, I keep waiting for the installer to DETECT the printer but it seems like it does nothing but HANGS (this "searching for new hardware" dialogue remains - no CHANGE).

What do I do to make the installer detect the printer?

I have this Anti Virus SUITE and every time I boot up my PC, a "CA EVENT MANAGER" program kicks in and SLOWS down my PC by sucking up all the memory. I tried the Computer Associates ONLINE Help and they re-installed the program but still getting the same issue. Is there a way to turn this to only be on MANUALLY?

I'm TRYING to uninstall Java (TM) 6 Update 3 from my Programs. Failing each time.

I am looking for a program that will convert PDF format to XPS format.   I can find plenty that work the other way around!   Can any of yous guys point me in the right direction please?    File -> Print... select 'Microsoft XPS Document Writer'. This should be present on Vista and later, but I know you can download it for XP (and maybe older operating systems too).

This method of 'printing' to XPS WORKS for just about any program capable of printing.Thanx here mate, but I don't want to print out....... Is there a way to get the  the two headed arrow that allows me to increase or DECREASE the screen perimeter to function on a DOS Command Prompt screen?  I can PULL the screen up or down but I cannot widen it. If I maximize it fills the screen vertically but fills only one half of the screen horizontally

I have some data and a CHART using excel 2010.
The data the chart pulls from, strings to 2 pages( page 2 and 4 when printed).
I would like to have the data on one page. The problem is, when I move the data to one page, I can't get the chart to have one continuous line ( as it is now).

I CREATED 100+ worksheets, many of which have custom margins. Recently, I got a new computer and also UPGRADED to Office 2010. Now those worksheets have the margins changed (but not back to NORMAL) but only on my computer. When someone ELSE opens the worksheets, the margins are as I wanted them. I've had others try with both Excel 2007 and Excel 2010 and everyone works fine except for my computer. And on one worksheet that I checked, my margins are the same as my coworker but my page breaks are differentt than his. My scaling is set to automatic and 100%. Any help would be appreciated.Could try to uninstall excel and reinstall it which will set it back to default to SHOTGUN the problem and force it back to default config.

I have EXCEL 2007 running on a 64bit windows 7 desktop.
I can not get more than 65536 rows in a worksheet.
If I TRY to import data from access, I only get the first 65536 rows.

I read in another FORUM that this limit applies to a 32bit system. The only thing I can think of is that I have also got excel 2003 INSTALLED on the desktop - could this be interfering?

when I am in animation SHOP, I sometimes NEED to EXPORT a frame into my corel paint shop pro. It wants to go to paint shop pro, but not Corel PSP, where I want it to go. Is there some way for me to TELL it where to go?

However, now, all of a sudden, SUPERANTISPYWARE won't load up and the icon doesn't appear in the taskbar on startup.

I can still get the icon to load and the program to load by double clicking the icon on my desktop.

I have already scanned using SuperAntiSpyware and nothing was found except for tracking cookies.

Does anyone know what's going on and how to solve this problem?

I have Avast (free), Comodo Firewall (free), SuperAntiSpyware (free), Malwarebytes (free), and SpywareBlaster (free) as stuff protecting my computer.

You can't run both MSE & Avast, both being anti-virus.  If you're happy with Avast, keep using it.

I would recommend MSE as you could always remove free Avast anytime.

I have found a number of references to problems with Java on the forum but none that have a resolution.  I have emailed Java twice about it and had no reply.  Is this a common problem?  It seems to be, so why won't Sun sort it out?

Anything on the net that USES Java for it's graphics gives me the same problem including Java's own test.  The circular dots of the java logo GO round and round for ages until eventually an error message appears.  It is always the same: ClassNotFoundException, though with a different class each time depending on the site (applet?).  I've followed every instruction I can find from the ones Java gives on it's Help pages to those on here.  Nothing works.  If I've a virus, Agnitum Outpost Security Suite Pro can't find it, nor can Malwarebytes nor SuperAntiSpyWare.  Can anyone help me?Sounds like you NEED to completely un-install and then re-install java.I have already tried doing that.  The problem persists.  I've done the same with the add ons on Internet Explorer.  I had an external hard drive and i want to encrypt only a part of it, lets say only one folder and all its sub folders or if this is not possible to put a password on a folder so that i can stop access to that folder and all its sub folders. This should work regardless any pc (operating system) the external hard disk will be plugged in.

Interesting point.  There are a couple of different schools of thought here.  A closed source solution could theoretically make use of a private encryption key, layering encryption over the top of the user-level encryption.  This could provide certain cryptographic advantages.  But as we've seen in the the BluRay world, these private keys have a habit of being leaked eventually.

Again in favour of the closed source model is the security-by-obscurity argument.  As any security professional will tell you, that's not true security, but when combined with other security approaches, it can enhance the security of a particular product.  A software company selling its encryption product has a vested interest in protecting its reputation by producing good quality (reasonably unbreakable) security products.

On the other hand, experience has tended to back up claims that TrueCrypt is one of the best products of its type on the market.  The fact that the code is open source, although it makes it possible for crackers to attempt to detect code vulnerabilities (e.g. the volatile memory problem), also makes it possible for other interested parties to audit and improve the code.

Personally, I would always use TrueCrypt, but that's only because it is not currently known to be seriously vulnerable in any meaningful way.  This product, like any of its type, will continually come under threat from crackers, security professionals, governments, etc., and you should always assume that eventually any security model will be defeated.  (TrueCrypt provides a plausible deniability feature to somewhat alleviate this problem.)  Unless TrueCrypt continues to be developed and improved, it will almost inevitably become obsolete eventually.  Where's the incentive for TrueCrypt development to continue, if there is no commercial reward for its production?  Altruism can come to an end, or the lead developer could go AWOL or worse.

For the above reasons, I would recommend keeping all security options open, including closed source solutions - they may well overtake the open source field at some point.  Never place a philosophical commitment over a practical reality.
