Is it POSSIBLE to copy files and programs on a VISTA laptop across to a new one with 7 installed? I have some FAVORITE old programs I don't have the ORIGINAL discs or keys to anymore and I don't want to lose them. I back up with NORTON Ghost on the old one.Programs cannot be copied and expected to run properly...they need to be re-installed.

I have to forward a few pages out of a PDF file.
Any suggestions?You have a PDF file and you want to send just a few pages to an e-mail. The entire document is much too large.  Is that  RIGHT?

Some PDF readers may allow you to do that.  If not, you can print just a few pages to your default printer.

Some word processors will allow you to work with PDF documents. But the file may be write-protected to prevent unauthorized emendations.

There are FREE programs the replace a printer and make new PDF pages. Bear with me.  www.dopdf.com/

Here is a workaround if none of the above works. Assuming the document is not too complicated , this can work.There are free programs that divert print output to a PDF print. What you do is print the  document selecting a range of pages. Then select the printer to be the virtual device that writes a new PDF file instead of actual printing.

I clicked on open with notepad by accident, and now all my .EXE files open with notepad. How can i fix this? I've tried



1. Open Command Prompt by typing command in RUN dialog box.

2. Now provide following command:

cd\windows

3. It'll activate Windows FOLDER. Now provide following command to open Registry Editor:

regedit



NOTE: If you can't open "regedit", press CTRL+ALT+DEL keys and open "Task Manager". Now click on "File" menu and HOLD down the "CTRL" key and click on "NEW Task" menu. It'll open a Command Prompt window. Now provide regedit.exe command and press Enter. It'll open registry editor without any problem.

4. Now go to following key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe

In right-side pane, change value of Default key to exefile

5. Now go to:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command

In right-side pane, change value of Default key to:

"%1" %*

6. That's it. Now exit Registry Editor and RESTART your Windows. Now you should be able to open EXE files without any problem.

I am looking for a program that can help me unzip zipped files in zipped folders....My mom recently sent me a bunch of photos, each in a .zip archive, each in a .zip folder. There are about 50 folders. To go through each one and unzip the contents is very time consuming. This is how she has organized her photos to "Save space". I have spoken with her.

Is there a way to do this? I already have WinRAR, but it does not unzip all the ARCHIVES, only the main one (The folders, not the files inside the folders, unless selected individually.)
I am told there is an organizational scheme, and do not want to move the files unless I have to.

To show, it goes like this

Folder 1.zip
    >Photo 1.zip
    >Photo 2.zip
    >Photo 3.zip etc.
Folder 2.zip
    >Photo 1.zip etc.
Folder 3.zip etc.

And so on. When I extract the folders, the photos inside are still zipped individually.

In your case, it should be able to grab any image files that are inside zip files which themselves are inside other zip files. It shouldn't overwrite or delete any files, but I don't want my program to be responsible for a DATA disaster so please make backups first

IndraIt is more useful to know the operating system you are running to help you. There is a way of running dos BASED programs in all of them.

This one is for XP

Many older computer programs MAY not run correctly if you just click on the program's EXECUTABLE file in Windows XP; this is particularly true of older game programs. There can be many reasons why. Perhaps the program uses DOS calls that XP does not know about. Perhaps there are GRAPHIC hardware considerations. Perhaps...who knows.

Indeed, some older DOS-based programs, in order to speed up the display, wrote directly to the computer's hardware. These, Windows XP will not allow to run at all. In order to run these you will have to find a computer with an older operating system or a good emulator or virtual computer (see below).

For those in between, there is some hope in using Windows XP's Compatibility Mode.

Open Windows Explorer and navigate to where the program is located. Then...

•Right click on the program file (the .EXE or .COM file).
•Select Properties from the menu that pops up.
•Select the Compatibility Tab in the dialog.
•Change the options so the program opens in Windows 95 or 98 compatibility mode. Note the other options in the dialog as you may have to experiment a bit and change some of them as well.I have done as you mentioned in this thread but nothing would happened. You may have a virus that pretends to be from adobe. You have to run a good virus SCANNER to make SURE you don't have it.

I just took the computer back to factory settings and all drives are not showing up in my computer.  The flash drives are not, but they are installed and I found out by RUNNING this command. wmic logicaldisk get name  Could you please help?  Thank you.

What happened PRIOR to this ? ?I used Gateway Recovery Management.  It restores from the hard drive.  I have no cd.

What caused me to restore the computer is I was downloading hacks for the Sims games and had TROUBLE with the awesome mod.  Pressing Ctrl Shift C didn't bring up the cheatbox anymore and I tried getting rid of everything.  I even deleted the C:/Program Files/Electronic Arts/ and reinstalled all my games and expansions over and that did NOTHING.  Taking it back to factory settings fixed the Sims 3 problem.

Gateway thinks a driver didn't install properly, but the drives are  accessible they just don't show in My Computer so how is that POSSIBLE?  Thank you.

MichelleTo update the info I took the computer back to factory settings again and the same thing happened.  I downloaded Advanced Systemcare Pro and the SystemInformation/drives sees the drives, but Windows My Computer doesn't.  I have no idea what the problem could be.  How come Advanced Systemcare can see the drives, but Windows my computer can't?  I have no idea what to do and I have no idea where to begin, because it looks like they really are there.

They are also in device manager.

I am very much a beginner with computers, but I have a problem with my FILES. I dont know how it happened but ONE day all my files on my computer and external harddrive starting breaking down the files. My music files in the beginning had the song in the correct folders for the artists. Now when you open the files for each artist each song is listed but then the album art is in a separate icon below it and sometimes a desktop ini icon is below the album art icons. Its very hard to find music when over 3000 songs are broken down to miniscule bits. Can anyone tell me what I did wrong and how to fix it? I've tried to uninstall Publisher '97 from my laptop which runs windows 7 and has office 2010 (but no publisher)
I had an old cd with publisher 97 so I DECIDED to TRY and use this version but it is not as good as the 2010 version.
So, I uninstalled it (at least that's what I assumed happened) but when I tried to install publisher 2010 it SAID that another version was already installed so it was unable to install 2010.
I've tried to search for any old publisher FILES (I found three dated .../.../96) so I tried to delete these but they could not be found in the same location (very strange as they came up in the search).

Can anyone help me get rid of the old publisher 97 so that I can install the 2010 version.

In any EVENT, if you're stuck, reinstall Pub '97, then use something like Revo Uninstaller (the free version) to get rid of it thoroughly.

I have been using In House Accountant since 1989, it is a basic ACCOUNTING program that I know inside and out. I am willing to PAY the first person who can help me undo something I did to reverse over 3000 transactions when I flipped my year end and forgot to back up the last year.  I can give further details if anyone thinks they can help.  IHA is out of business and I have tried everything I know.  I do not know how to GO into the program to undo the year end and go back to a few days earlier when all my transactions were visible.  All I have now is totals.  I am freaking out.

If thins is really important to you, you may have to employ a data recovery service to find files that were marked for erasure.
What they change is hard to say. Ask among your contacts for a service that know of in your  area. Otherwise, you need to contact a expert service and ship the drive per their instructions.

OK, so I purchased a new desktop PC with Windows 7 installed, but 2 of my software applications PLUS my scanner will not run under Win-7 (64-bit). The scanner manufacture has not written a new driver for the scanner - I prefer to run the software, so downloaded ORACLE's VmVirtual Box. Upon installation, it asks for the original install disk.

My problem:
My old desktop had been running Windows 98, and I purchased a copy of Windows ZP Home Edition (upgrade) when the upgrade disk is inserted during the Virtual Box installation, it is not accepted, and asks for the original install disk?

SECOND problem: After installation on my new computer, the Office 2003 programs default to an Activation Wizard, and when I attempt to register the software, it tells me that I have activated it the maximum number of times. Are there any solutions short of repurchasing ($$$$) the software?What version of Windows 7 do you have?  "Using Windows XP Mode, you can run programs that were designed for Windows XP on computers running Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, or ULTIMATE editions."

If your version of Win 7 is not one of the above, then you could buy a Windows 98 disc on ebay so that you can use your Win XP upgrade disc.

Re: Office 2003, call Microsoft.  As long as they know you have removed Office 2003 from a previous installation and, therefore, would not be in violation of the license agreement by installing it on your Win 7 computer, I believe they will assist you in resolving this. Called another number and told him about the XP situation on my new PC running Win-7, and he told me (in a heavily accented voice) that I would have to "upgrade" to Windows XP before I could install the Virtual machine?!?!

Doubt that I will do that. An upgrade disk, whether it is being installed onto a physical PC or a virtual one, looks for a qualifying product ALREADY installed, and if it is not there, asks for a qualifying product's install disk. An XP upgrade disk will not install XP onto a bare machine, virtual or otherwise, unless you show it a qualifying product, e.g. a Windows 98 install disk. If you do not have one, you must buy one.

In the future, NEVER use registry cleaners. The best of them do absolutely nothing useful. The worst of them can leave your system unusable.Here, take a look:

600 changes to my registry!!

Hello everyone! I really need your help! I tried to recover files from my external  2 tb drive that I accidentally unplugged from my computer while the computer was scanning it. Recuva found every file that was missing. Those files also had the green dot next to them, showing they should be easily restored. The thing is, when I press restore, it restores files for 15 minutes, but only a portion of my files. The rest of files that weren't able to be retrieved, are then listed with " the system cannot find the file specified." next to each file. I'm so close to retrieving my data. Please tell me what I need to do to fix this error and get my files back. It would serve you well to consider that ALL who chose to respond to posts on the CH forums are volunteers and within their knowledge and experience generally do their best to assist. If the OP has the need to obtain information that is not available in his area, there are ways of getting such information without the need for the Internet or the Telephone. If he has a PC of almost any kind, he  can read information stored on very SMALL chips. The chips cm be transported by  normal means and do not burden limited resources.

Streaming TV shows squanders  enormous bandwidth and is a poor use of resources in a developing country. But on YouTube, a 1/2 HOUR show is in about 10 parts and it gets tiring after a while. I use a dongle which is supposed to work at 72MBps- but actually is nowhere as fast. I live in SL, and yes it is a developing country, but most of the stuff available in India can be accessed here as well.

Let me assume the OP wants English language TV shows. He may like to CONTACT the British Embassy in Sri Lanka and find out how they get TV  shows. There may be a subscription service available of a private microwave network.

May I ASK why the OP has not considered  files managers for digital PHOTOS? Perhaps he does not know about the bunch of ideas or software others have created to organize digital photo albums.

To specific. my ISSUE is this:

I have a survey list(oil well surveying) that goes some what like this:

I have FORMULAS that will intepolate(find new values based on the known) every 5 meters between the survey stations(between 30 and 60) at for example depth 35,40,45,50,55. At this depths I will CALCULATE new incliantion, azimuth,tvd,Northing and Easting. I just dont know how to arrange this. The surveys are always taken every 30m/100ft. When I import the survey I would like excel to create automatically 4-5 cells in between the surveys stations(between 30 and 60) in the raws next to it. In these cells  I will have the formulas to calculate the interpolated figures. If any one has a better way of arranging this, I will be more than happy to hear.

My Dell Inspiration laptop will not boot up past the initial windows loading SCREEN. For a little while it had been getting to the login screen, but not now. 

Half the keys on the keyboard do not work, WHOLE right half.  So, EVEN when it would get to the login screen I couldn't type in my password.  We plugged in an external keyboard and that worked fine, until it stopped booting past the loading screen...

The CURSOR is erratic.

The speakers are making a clicking sound occasionally like the dilophasaurus in Jurrasic Park. USUALLY on start up.

I did drop it last night but not from very high up. Could be a virus maybe?  I don't have any antivirus right now because I was stupid... I was in the middle of switching antivirus software.

Is there anything I can do at home to help it?  It is brand new, only a couple months old, no warrenty though because I got it refurbished off Ebay.  Windows 7 operating system.

For office 2003 not sure about anything later, in the tools MENU, options and on the General tab there is an OPTION for "At startup, open all files in".Your version of Excel? truenorthThere are plenty of programs that allow you to mount a disk image as a virtual CD or DVD. WinCDemu is one which allows you to mount a number of different disk image types (ISO, BIN, CUE, MDS, MDF, NRG) as well as VHD virtual disk images.
Sorry i didn't provide accurate info, I'm working with a few files from a CD and i don't want to make an ISO (or any other disc image) just to test the minor changes.
I also CANT just edit the ISO directly cause I'm modding a PS2 game(translating it), witch will cause many problems.

the whole point is to avoid rebuilding the disc image as that will take time and space

and before someone says "piracy is bad and against the rules" i own the disc so its not piracy If you put the files on a USB thumb drive, does that not give you sufficient CD-like FUNCTIONALITY?  (I.e. Windows will see at as a removable drive, for starters.)

DVD 5 and DVD 9 are the size of the DVD not the region. I have a SPREADSHEET that that has several sheets (around 10) on it. The first sheet is a Data entry sheet and it puts the INFORMATION onto the second sheet. My problem is I need it to put the information entered onto a particular sheet depending on what is entered into the first box. EX. if A is entered I need all the information to go to the sheet marked A, if B is entered then I need all the information to go to sheet B.

I have a HP Pavillion computer with XP as the OS. My computer will not automatically reboot or shut down. I have checked and there seems to be NO virus, spyware, or malware on the computer.

Do you have a license to install the same software on multiple machines?This leads to the QUESTION of software sources. The vendor of the software may have some provision for rapid install if the software is purchased by an educational institution.

An alternative is to find SUITABLE software that is portable.

Such software does not need installation in Windows, It just runs 'as is" and a shortcut can be placed on the desktop. This is often the case for free software  under  GPL where  the authors doe not want monetary tribute. (But require your RESPECT.)

(This is not the same as cross-platform software.)

Is there a fairly cheap program that I could access their laptop to solve easy problems that the have on almost a daily deal. I live 500+ miles away. While visiting or being visited there is no PROBLEM. EVEN though they write it down in own language, they have problems DAYS later.TeamViewer...

I just recorded 5 videos with my Kodak Playsport, and oddly enough, three of them recorded with perfect sync between audio and video, but in two of them, the video is ahead of the audio.  It looks as if the video were recorded at a faster frame rate or something, so as the clip GOES on, it gets exponentially out of sync with the audio.  I am hoping this can be fixed, as it is some real funny footage. I'm trying to edit in final cut pro (running macos), and for all six of the files, it says vid rate is 29.97 fps, H.264, audio rate is 48.0KHz. Is there something I can do in Final Cut Pro or COMPRESSOR to make this sync or is there another program? I'm hoping this is fixable because EVEN the original file is out of sync, even when I play it back on the Kodak Playsport.This camcorder is very highly rated by reviewing sites. Have you tried talking to the Kodak people re your issue? I ask this because this is a very specific piece of technology that PROBABLY not many members are familiar with (including me). When you say recorded i take that to mean on the camcorder. From which you want to put them on your computer. Right? It is the resultant video on the HDD of the computer that is out of sync. Is that correct? Is it a proprietary software program associated with the camera that you are USING for the transfer? Have you tried any other software to do the transfer? I had also problems with installing\enabling HP quickweb. It got stuck with creating the partition- it never INSTALLED quickweb

Here is how it functioned for me (after a lot of tries and errors)

1. Enable Quickweb in BIOS (see somewhere else for this)
2. Do not have an extra partition along your SYSTEM partition (where Windows is installed).
3. Create a new partition, with FAT32. Not more than 10 GB. I named it HP_tools, just in case
4. download the latest Quickweb files from HP
5. EXTRACT them in the new partition HP_TOOLS
6. run setup (it never questioned me where to install). it installed in HP_tools
7. restart your pc
8. I activate my quickweb through a button (I have HP 4530s)

Question: I installed a new, larger capacity HD as the MAIN one is making strange noises.  I'd like to transfer the data from the old to the new and tried with Quickmirror.  The transfer never works, saying some files can't be transferred.  Is there a better program for this task?

I have a Toshiba laptop, running Windows 7 Basic.
Everything was working fine, then all of a sudden my applications started behaving strangely.
If I had anything running in FULL screen mode it would minimise after a few minutes (VLC media player, windows media player and games)
When playing games, not in full screen mode, the game would suddenly pause as if you had clicked away.
And now I cant get my Vodafone software for my 3G to open correctly. It keeps looping and does not open all the way.

I know that this sounds LIKE a virus, I've run full scans using Kaspersky and Malwarebytes and they both report 0 THREATS.
Any advise is more than welcome. Do a clean boot. See if the problem persists.

If the problem doesn't happen in the clean boot state, start enabling items until you find the culprit. Here are complete instructions on doing what is suggested above:

Open msconfig and on the General tab choose "selective startup" (uncheck all three items) and reboot. Does the problem still occur? If not, start adding items back to msconfig one or two at a time, rebooting after each change, until the problem reappears and you'll have identified the offending process. This is clearly a time consuming procedure, but it is the best way to DETERMINE if some process loading with the system is the CAUSE of your problem.

After you've isolated the cause, do not use msconfig to permanently disable the process. Instead, if it is a service go to START - RUN and type: services.msc (then press enter) and disable the service OR, if it a program, you can download & run a simple app such as Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml) to enable, disable, or otherwise manage startup programs.

I've been trying to install turbo TAX and keep getting stuck on the .net 4 framework part, I've uninstalled and reinstalled, and followed the recommendations from some BLOGS they REFER to, but still hasn't installed, running vistaDLoad and install a fresh copy of >NET 4 framework...I did that a few times, and the the disc still gets hung up on .net during installation.  I have not contacted the company yet, though that is still an option.If you have the PRODUCT Code on the CD i believe you can also DLoad a fresh copy of the App...
