Solve : Windows shortcut target commands?

Answer»

Hello, so I've been looking into GTA4 not running on my friends computer and we've encountered a few commands that had to be written down in the game's shortcut TARGET (-availablevidmem or -norestrictions  for example), although I believe these particular ones are SPECIFIC to GTA4, I wonder if there are any USEFUL "universal" commands I could use in SIMILAR fashion on other games/programs? Or maybe even these same commands are universal ?Does GTA4 run properly now with those operational parameters ( switches ) set?

I had a stuttering bug with GTA4 which I resolved with a patch for the game. Have you performed all patches?

In regards to your QUESTION... tagged on operational parameter options also known as switches are generally specific for an application such as the following:

Solve : Excel+PowerPoint 2007?

Answer»

How can I insert in PPT presentation numbers from EXCEL file, which can be updated if I change data in this Excel file? Thank youIf you place a hyperlink in your powerpoint that points locally to the XLS, you can have it where it is selectable from within the power point presentation and then when it opens you then have your Excel document with graphs etc.

For the fact that powerpoint if copy/pasting a graph or content from excel to powerpoint is no longer further associated with the original excel spreadsheet, to keep information fresh from the excel spreadsheet, its best for powerpoint to reference the current excel spreadsheet via hyperlink to the file locally or on a network share or even on the web.

The above hyperlink is the method I have used in the past with presentations for referencing data that changes frequently.

Here is another method involving macros to update the content, but I have never tried this myself, found this on a GOOGLE search for "dynamic xls content in powerpoint ", your xls is dynamic since its ever changing: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/37b4f6e7-25b3-40bc-8eb5-7d4a8a748769/powerpoint-dynamic-link-to-excel?forum=officeitpropreviousDave is exactly right.

I've done so many presentations where I needed to refer to excel and data collected. A hyperlink is your best bet unless you want to go in and change all the information on your powerpoint before you give the presentation or distribute it (but I doubt that you want to or have the time to do that). Thank you. I have done that. The LAST thing in this presentation is: on each slide there needs to be date (right up) and page number in the bottom (MIDDLE). How to do that? If I open Header and footer, it shows that and it makes just footer and nothnig in header:

http://shrani.si/f/3S/l3/1HnhFkmW/untitled.png

Thank you very much. BestThe Date/Time box needs to be checked as for without it checked its greyed out - disabled, then click on apply to save this change.

Unfortunately I have not used this FEATURE before to help with placement on the powerpoint, but I would think that it should allow for you to place it where you want it as a normal object similar to how a text box or image can be moved.

I also dont have Office 2007 or PowerPoint 2007 to be able to play around with it at my end. The last version of Office I bought was 2003 and since then I moved over to Open Office and then Libre Office which are free and plenty of features and cross file compatible with MS Office formats.

Solve : Screen shaking at lower resolutions...?

Answer»

Hello everyone! I am very new here and I have a question that Google has no answer for, as I do not know how to properly describe the PROBLEM, so please bear with me.

I have an HP Compaq 6000 Pro All-In-One pc that works great, but has a small, yet INCREDIBLY annoying issue. When I updated my drivers after reinstalling Windows 7 32bit, my graphics card driver installed AMD Catalyst Control Center and since then, my screen will always malfunction when a lower resolution (NATIVE being 1920x1080). At the lower resolution, my screen will duplicate the original image it is trying to show. While the image is duplicated, my screen shakes, which renders any reading on the multiple screens incredibly difficult. This was not an issue BEFORE I updated my driver. Not updating the driver makes it so that I cannot use the native resolution. Can ANYONE PLEASE help? This has been plaguing me for weeks! Quote

...reinstalling Windows 7 32bit,
Why? A re-install of Windows 7 is justified in a few cases. What did you do? Did you have a reason to not save the drivers?
Please look at your user manual. If you did a re-install by the book, it would not be necessary to update the drivers.

But I am often wrong. Maybe somebody else knows more.

Is this the computer you have?
http://css.sdhc.k12.fl.us/SharedDocuments/HP_Service_Guides/SG_6000pro.pdfDid the video driver come from HP ? ?
If not remove the one you installed and use the HP one.I am downloading the driver from HP now. How do I install with these drivers even though I have the other one installed ALREADY?

Solve : Video freezing/lagging when playing MKV files?

Answer»

I need some help, for some reason some of my videos/movies in the MKV format the video image would lag or completely freeze for seconds at time, its REALLY annoying and ruins any movie I'm trying to watch at the time.

It doesn't seem to happen to all the MKV format FILES I have, some files playback very smoothly and others I constantly experience video freezing/lagging. The player I use is VLC 0.9.9, I experienced similar problems with MKV format files on my older dell computer, but everything is much faster on my current computer, I didn't think I would experience this problem again. can ANYONE tell me where there can be a problem causing the video lags?

my old dell computer:
2002 dell dimension 4500
windows xp home edition sp2
Intel Pentium 4 single core 1.993 ghz
512 mb pc2100
nvidia geforce fx5500 256 mb APG4x with some overclocking done with rivatuner.

my new computer:
2009 custom built
windows vista home premium 64 bit
Intel i7 920 2.67ghz quad core with ht
MSI x58 platinum motherboard
G.Skill 6GB (3x2GB) triple channel DDR3 1333
EVGA nvidia GTS250 superclocked editionYou can try some MKV players INCLUDING VLC, Windows Media Player, etc. Or you can compress your large MKV in 1080p to a smaller file size. It may solve the video lags. This is a old DEAD thread from 2009. Reason why it never got an answer is because the movies are probably illegal downloads.

Solve : Winows 8.1 - Restoring overwritten file?

Answer»

Greetings everyone.

I have a rather delicate issue. Here it goes: I had a Microsoft Excel 2013 file that I had been working on for 8 hours TODAY. When I was done, I wanted to overwrite the old file, which was on a USB drive, with the new, updated one from today. Due to my incredible stupidity however, I overwrote the new file with the old file from the USB drive instead, leaving me with 2 old versions of the file and 8 hours of work lost.

I tried two things:

- Win8 File Restore: You save your older versions of files on an external hard drive to prevent such things from happening. Unfortunately, the next older version is the one from a couple weeks back, although I had been saving the file multiple times during my work today. I suspect that this is due to the file simply being overwritten by the one from the USB drive, which had indeed not been changed for weeks. So where's my older version of the file saved on the LAPTOP, but stupidly overwritten by another one of the same name and content (apart from the progress I made today)?

- System Restore: Unfortunately, my last restore point was yesterday, which was when a program was last installed. And yesterday the file was in the same state as those couple weeks ago. I need a version from today before my overwriting the file though. Is there some genius way to do this?

I can handle many software issues, but I've run out of ideas on this one. If anyone has an idea, I'd be immensely grateful.System restore wouldn't HELP. If the file exists, you can try Recuva: http://www.piriform.com/recuvaIf the file was on your local hard drive, you might be able to use the Previous Versions feature. I've used it to recover from bone-headed mistakes myself as well.

It looks like that particular feature was removed from win8 though; here is an article that shows how to enable it and perhaps find the previous version information.

Thanks for the input guys, but both didn't work. I've also tried EASEUS Data Recovery, as well as Recuva, as well as Previous Versions feature for Win8. An older version simply does not exist.Try some of the Office file recovery tools then...

Solve : Toshiba HDD recovery?

Answer»

Hi, I'm trying to restore my computer to the original factory default state but when I PRESS F8 the Recovery Utility is not an option anymore.
I read all the others posts about Toshiba HDD recovery but I'm so confused!

To check if my hdd PARTITION was deleted I follow some steps in a tutorial and the screen in ADMINISTRATIVE tools show me that I have 3 partition (C:, D: and Recovery partition with almost 2GB)

My QUESTION is how can I access to that Recovery Partition and restore my computer to the original factory settings?

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]It may be F10 to start the factory recovery...Thank you for your help.
I tried F10 but then it goes to a screen like the one I'm attaching and I don't know what to do (or even if it's possible to do something)

The screen says:
Quote

Edit windows boot options to: Windows 7
Path: (...)winload.exe

Partition: 2
Hard Drive: (...)

[/NOEXECUTE=OUTPUTOUT
(and here I can write something but what??)

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]I took a look and is actually F8...

See Here...

You may have to tap F8 repeatedly immediatly at startup instead of just pressing it once.
Let us know...I already saw this tutorial and as shown in the picture is suposed to appear the option to «TOSHIBA HDD RECOVERY» but in my computer it doesn't appear anymore.

Thank you, once again

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]Then something has happened to the factory restore partition...
1 option is to order the CD's from Toshiba which are a minimal charge + shipping...

Solve : Security apps for windows 7, Need Suggestions.?

Answer»

Hi and good day to everyone, i was curious about zone alarm, are there any other free softwares that offers the same features of zone alarm? if it's not a hassle to your parts, some suggestions will be appreciated. Thank you.Is there a reason why you dont want to use zone alarm or are you just curious as to all the options out there?

In the past I have used Zone Alarm, however these days my software firewall is just the built in Windows Firewall.

I installed AVG to my one system the one day and it gave me a trial of the firewall that AVG has, but I had to disable the AVG firewall because it was never intended for exceptions to be added.

The problem I had with AVG Firewall is that I have a cross over cable between 2 systems ( Gaming System and a Regular Workstation ) to transfer large video files created with Fraps on the one gaming system to the other workstation system that processes these large 20+ GB files and turns them into small like 700MB AVI files to post on Youtube for our guild events. This way the workstation can crunch out the large files while the gaming sytems CPU is free to continue gaming etc without the CPU trying to game and process video files at the same time into AVI's. AVG Firewall had no options at all to add an exception to allow these 2 systems to communicate through this trusted cross over cable. So I had to disable AVG Firewall.

Zone Alarm I used mainly years ago with my Windows 2000 Pro Pentium 166Mhz workstation so that I could somewhat safely use it online. Windows XP was the first OS to COME with built in firewall and prior to that you had to install Norton Security, Zone Alarm, or some other firewall to protect a system from port probes etc such as back in the days of dial-up when without a firewall people could find your system if it had a vulnerability and mess with it.

I stopped using Zone Alarm when they came out with a newer version and DROPPED support for Windows 2000. I then moved on to XP with its built in firewall, and then 7 with its built in firewall.

These days THOUGH of broadband internet if you have a router between your modem and your computer your pretty well protected through the hardware firewall as long as the default password was changed on the router so that someone cant get into it and make it wide open. Your post only mentions firewall but your title implies a broader spectrum of security apps.  This should include apps to protrect against viruses and malware.  I'll suggest avast antivirus free and Malwarebytes AntiMalware and SUPERAntiSpyware.  Quote from: DaveLembke on May 10, 2014, 01:43:31 PM

Ok i understand sir dave, i will trust my router and my built-in firewall, thanks for this. will research more about security in windows 7, in regards to video editing, are you using adobe after effects? or maybe one of these such as sony vegas pro, 3ds max, adobe lightroom and illustrator? Solve : how to install office 2007 on servce 2003?

Answer»

pls help am using server 2003 i want to know how to install office 2007 or 2010 on it You can always create a VM on the 2003 Server to run as a Virtual Workstation within Server 2003 and install it to the virtual workstation that is running say a Virtual Workstation of Windows XP SP2 or newer OS within it.

Years ago I use to use Virtual PC 2007 to have a virtual XP Pro SP2 workstation that I could launch from a 2003 server. Here is more info:

Virtual PC 2007 Supported OS ( Server 2003 = YES ) http://support.microsoft.com/kb/831461

Here is link to Virtual PC 2007 download http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=4580

All you need is like an available license of XP to install to the Virtual PC 2007 to make a Virtual Hard Drive and then you can launch the Virtual XP ENVIRONMENT within Server 2003. Then while in that virtual environment you can insert the Office 2007 Disc and install directly to the virtual system.

You can then with the virtual system turned off, you can create a backup copy of the virtual system. For XP I think the clean virtual system of just XP Pro fully patched was around 4 or 5GB in SIZE.

*** NOTE: Virtual PC 2007 will request an allocation of physical RAM for the virtual machine. I have run XP on virtual machines on as little as 128MB, however for Office 2007 to meet the minimum system requirements you will want to allocate at least 256MB RAM. You will want to allocate more if you use other features etc... see this link for memory requirements and notation: https://wiki.csuchico.edu/confluence/display/help/Office+2007+-+Minimum+System+Requirements

The virtual machine will basically remove an allocation if memory from the servers physical memory as its own, so you dont want to take too much away from the real physical server, but find an amount that works and doesnt starve the server in memory from the other duties that this server has.

Lastly... you can run multiples of the Virtual PC 2007 virtual systems at the same time. Once I wanted to see how MANY virtual systems I could run at the same time, so I made duplicate copies of the virtual machine and then fired them all up. I was able to get 9 instances of XP all running at the same time on 192MB of RAM each on a Pentium 4 2.8Ghz HT with 2.5GB RAM which lagged it out badly with the CPU CORE(s) pegged at just about 100% to try to keep the juggle. I then deleted the 8 of the 9 virtual machines after since it would not have been legal to use 9 of the same license. It was just a test to see what would happen, but could not remain after the quick test due to legality reasons.

Solve : Strange dialogue-boxes in Word 2007?

Answer»

Hello

I am getting a series of strange MS Word 2007 dialogue boxes that pop-up (please see attached screenshots), beginning with 'Word cannot open the EXISTING file', then 'Saving auto recovery, then 'Word cannot save....' , then 'Word cannot Save As...', then a final box that tells me that 'Changes have been made that AFFECT the global template, Normal dotm. Do you want to save those changes' (I always say 'no'.

I have had these before, and so uninstalled then reinstalled Word, but the problem has not gone away.

What is causing these dialogue boxes, please?

They occur when I try to upload a Word document - any Word document - to a Web site.

Thanks.

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]Apparently, you been making changes to Normal.dotm.   Please tell the whole story about that.  Hello soybean

Thanks for your reply.

I was not aware that I had made changes to it - there's no reason for me to do so. Maybe I have clicked 'Yes' instead of 'No' at some point, but it would not have been intentional.

How would I rectify this problem?

ThanksI had a user once who got hit with a macro virus that messed with the normal.* files. Here is more info.... btw, do you have an up to date antivirus and have you had any infections prior to this happening?

Thanks for getting back to me.

I have Malwarebytes, MS Security Essentials, and Superantispyware. Occasionally, I also run TFC.exe and Spybot. MS Security Essentials is running in the background all the time, and once or twice a week I run the others. I haven't got Norton or McAfee (or want them!).

NONE of these applications have picked up anything other than malware.

It may be, however, that a virus in the past has changed the default template normal.dotm because this has been GOING on for months.

The link you kindly posted refers to the type of problems I am experiencing every time I open and close Word, but that is not the case with me. It happens only when I upload a file. For example, a Web site asks me to upload a Word document. I click on 'Browse', navigate to my file(s), select one and that's when I get the first dialogue-box popping up, followed by the other boxes whose screenshots I attached.

It only occurs when uploading files.

Thanks again.

Having a separate download manager allows on e to close the browser and go do something else.

Solve : Software for reading scanned text?

Hello,
I am looking for software that I can install to be able to read text from a scanner.. NOTHING elaborate or complicated.... but on occasion would like to be able to do it.. for home use...would appreciate any suggestions..

Larry WollerWhat you want is called OCR  software.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Optical_character_recognition
Many commercial programs are available. Many are packed with a scanner.

Mulch-Function printers made by Brother, Epson and HP are examples.

Some free OCR software can be downloaded. Here is a limk I think is good and free of virus:
http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-ocr-software.htm
Does that help?

Hello,
Yes, you were a great help and thank you!... will CHECK out the link further when I have time to do some serious browsing.. BELIEVE it may be of a great help!..

Again, thanks and have a great day!!

LarryYou are welcome!  i knwo that some scanners already have OCR BUILT into them as a function and providing the font is clear enough they can scan straight to word/pdf FORMATS.

I have a video camera that uses an SD card.  When I transfer the video to a disc, I have to actually "play" the video from the camera through the computer to disc.  Time consuming.  I have a card reader and would like to cut the transfer time.  Is there an "app for that" or program I can use that would read the card, store on drive, then burn quickly "quicker..." To the DVD? ThanksWhat file format is the video?HTTP://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD_Flick

About DVD Flick
DVD Flick aims to be a simple but at the same time powerful DVD Authoring tool. It can take a number of video files stored on your computer and turn them into a DVD that will play back on your DVD player, Media Center or Home Cinema Set. You can add additional custom audio tracks, subtitles as well as a menu for easier navigation.
Worth a try.
Warning. Some sites 'piggy-back' this download and try to put junk in your PC. Sorry about that. It is a great program if you can find it.

File format is .MP4.  FAT32 shows up also I think that's the hard drive. When you say you "transfer" the video to a disc, do you mean you start with an .mp4 in the camera, and end with a DVD disk? By that I mean a video disk that will play in a regular ordinary DVD player? In other words you have software on the computer (possibly it came with the camera) that does this for you? Is this absolutely essential? Most DVD/BluRay players, even low end ONES can play mp4 directly, either on a disk or via a usb PORT, so you could possibly put the card in a card reader on a PC and burn a data disk with one or more mp4 files on it, or copy the mp4 to a pen drive, or plug the card reader in a usb port on a DVD/BluRay player. I find I am burning fewer and fewer disks these days.

Probably the format of the file SYSTEM on the camera's memory card.
Sounds like the File Association for MP4 is setup to play with your camera or something like that. Weird that it would only play through the camera though because you should have software on your computer that can play MP4 files.  Pretty sure Windows Media Player does. Mine does (Windows 7 SP1)
When I say I'm saving it to a disc, I am using our computer to record a DVD from the SD card that is in the camera.  I have to use the camera as a "player" and then send it through a "Dazzle" converter which is connected to the computer.  The main issue here is that I have to play the video from start to finish, at regular speed, to transfer to disc.  Ideally, if I could remove the SD card, not an issue, and plug it into our card reader, also not an issue, download it to say, the hard drive temporarily, and burn it faster than regular speed, I'd be golden.  I've never tried it that way, don't know if one of the programs on Windows 7 can do that, like media player, or whatever,.....Why don't you give it a shot? This is how I transfer video from my camcorder to my PC. I don't use the USB lead that came with it, I remove the SD card and insert it into a card reader. Then I just copy the file or files. I also do this with digital still cameras.
What you are doing is a wasted step as the vid is playing while copying.
Do as Salmon suggested...select the file...copy it to HDD...then burn it to DVD using the app of your choice.Even at 4x burning speed, I would think you are going to transcode and burn a 90 minute DVD in less than 90 minutes, and at 8x or 16x the gain will be greater.
Thanks, I'll give it a try. Quote from: earmic on April 21, 2014, 10:58:40 AM

Have you tried AppGeeker DVD Creator? you don't need to PALY the video from start to finish when "burn" your camera videos to DVD. All you need to do is extract the video from camera and save on your computer, then use the program to burn it onto disc.

I generally have pretty good results with that. Give it a shot.

Solve : Help - Setting up Gmail within Thunderbird?

Answer»

Operating System: Win 7
Mozilla Thunderbird: 24.3.0
Platform: Pc

Hello forum and more experienced elders. I am having problems with syncing of GMAIL in Thunderbird. I am missing some fundamental understanding and searching for my problems seems to give me different results which don't seem relevant. I'll try to summarize my questions below.

1) Can i have my Gmail Web-mail folders sync to Thunderbird using POP3 settings? I don't wish to use IMAP settings, is this possible?

In Thunderbird i have used the "Get Mail" option, I am using POP3 settings, i have emails dating from 2011 - 2013 however
am missing the remaining more up to date emails. Is this because the inbox is full?
Also my sent & inbox mail are all together MIXED in the inbox of Thunderbird.

2) How can i import my Gmail folders as they are in webmail into Thunderbird?

3) Within "Gmail Forwarding and POP/IMAP settings", I have the option "Enable POP for all mail (even mail that's already been downloaded)",   "2. When messages are accessed with POP" selected to "deleted Gmail's copy". "Disable IMAP"
How can I return to Gmail web-mail so I may start from the beginning and delete my Thunderbird account without losing my data and do things properly. Assuming that i should export Thunderbird mail back to basic Google web-mail?

Your SAMARITAN interest is deeply appreciated.

Cos  Did you already read this Mozilla article?
http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/thunderbird-and-gmailI hadn't seen this article. I will have a read thank you.  For any sort of syncing between you and Gmail you need to use IMAP (Is there any reason you have to use POP?)This might be the best reference: http://email.about.com/od/gmailtips/qt/How_to_Import_Mail_from_Mozilla_Thunderbird_in_Gmail.htmGmail account setup in TBird is easy...
However i think you're confused as to how email WORKS...
If you have another e-mail account there's no real reason to merge them...they are seperate accounts...
For example my TBird has 4 accounts on it...1 for my main server account...1 for my Yahoo account...1 for my GMail account and 1 for my disposable SPAM /signup account.
PS> BTW if you have that gMail account setting to delete from server your old emails may be GONE...sorry to be the bearer of bad news...Thank you to patio, soybean, camerongray and Geek-9pm for your threads and advice.
Your tips have been very helpful, i have solved the main problems.

I have switched to IMAP. Originally i wanted POP3 as i believed i could send and receive emails anonymously as my files would not be stored online. However i am not pursuing this route any longer as it seems more trouble than it's worth.

I am awaiting more information to "http://darkmail.info/", this service promises to be very secure.
My goal is to be able to send and receive anonymous emails.
I am not involved in any illegal activity; i want to use secure and trusted sources.
I hate that our personal information is always at risk,  the finger seems to point in the direction of the NSA time and time again.

Thank you and sorry for the extremely late response.

A footnote.
Just now, a few days ago, Google said they were doing some work on encryption to improve email security.

Solve : Dynamic versus Basic Disk?

Answer» HELLO Folks,

I am trying to get a multi-OS system going on my computer.  The OS selector
software tells me that it doesn't like the dynamic disk I have SET up (although
I had no idea Win 7 had partitioned my disk as dynamic), and it doesn't deal
with dynamic disks.

1- For a regular user, is there any advantages in using dynamic disk configuration?
2- Would converting from Dynamic to Basic cause any disadvantages/deficiencies?

Thank you

ziloo
Unless you know the answer already, you should start with BASIC disc.
What are basic and dynamic disks?
Quote
Basic disks and dynamic disks are two types of hard disk configurations in Windows. Most personal computers are configured as basic disks, which are the simplest to manage. Advanced users and IT professionals can make use of dynamic disks, which use multiple hard disks within a computer to manage data, usually for increased performance or reliability.
The above says essentially what I  just said. If you don't know, go basic.

Very simplified THEORY: In professional scenarios,  there are disparate programs, users and demands placed on a computer system. The dynamic disc can optimize performance by improvement of SPEED in real-time.
Does that help?Thank you very much Geek-9pm

On another note using another browser, I got a message
that says:

"Sorry ziloo, you are banned from using this forum!

This ban is not set to expire."

Can somebody explain to me what is going on
What have I done to deserve such condemnation

ziloo

ziloo. can't help you with that.  What Forum and what ban ? ?Well Patio.....I just logged in and I wasn't rejected !!!!
Don't know what happened but whatever it was, I am glad
it was resolved (I HOPE!  ).

Solve : Is Synctoy limited to 32 GB??

Answer»

I have to similar desktops PCs running Windows XP pro sp3.
Running a current version of Is Synctoy it seems to be limited to 32 GB.
Is this true?
This link is not clear to me:
error in SyncToy. MS Social
Is the a 32 GB limit?

What version are you using. It was my understanding that there was a limit of 2TB partition that it can handle, so the 32GB seems really small.

Some info from here below: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=15155

SyncToy Installation Notes:

UPGRADE:

- If upgrading from an earlier version of SyncToy (e.g. SyncToy 1.4 or SyncToy 2.0), it is **CRITICAL** to ensure that all folder pairs are fully synchronized using the previous version before running SyncToy 2.1 setup. Not following this guideline can lead to unintended behavior and partial data loss when running SyncToy 2.1 for the first time after upgrade. All folder pairs must also be fully synchronized at least once right after the upgrade is done.

Installation & Uninstallation:
- Both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of SyncToy2.1 are available as a single self-extracting archive executable which runs all of the required setup components when launched. The 64-bit version is targeted to 64-bit versions of Windows, e.g. Windows XP x64 Edition, Windows Vista 64-bit editions and Windows 7 x64 Edition.
- The 32-bit version may be installed and run on a 64-bit version of Windows as well.
- Simultaneous side-by-side installation of the 32-bit and 64-bit versions on the same machine is not recommended or supported.
- SyncToy 2.1 supports quiet installation by an Administrator user on the target machine. The steps for this are as follows. Please download the self-extracting archive executable and save locally. Extract files from the archive to a target directory. You'll notice 3 MSI files in the set of extracted files. Each of the 3 MSIs can be run in quiet mode using the MSI command line utility (msiexec.exe). The order in which the MSIs need to be installed is: Synchronization.msi, ProviderServices.msi, SyncToysetup.msi.
- SyncToy 2.1 DEPENDS on components of the Microsoft Sync Framework 2.0 which are included in SyncToy setup. Installing SyncToy along with these dependent components requires the USE of an account with Administrator privileges on the target machine. If the Microsoft Sync Framework 2.0 components are already installed on the target machine, SyncToy can be installed from a non-administrator user account.
- The SyncToy application will stop working if any of the dependent components are uninstalled, which can be fixed by re-running the full install PACKAGE on the target machine.
- If SyncToy 2.1 is installed using an account which is different than the one that was used to install previous versions of SyncToy, then the previous version will not be uninstalled. In this case, it is recommended that users uninstall the previous version using the previously used user account before installing SyncToy 2.1.
- If uninstalling SyncToy 2.1, the same user account must be used which was used for installation. DaveLembke, Thanks.
It is 2.1 and it works now.
The problem was me.
Glad you have it fixed

Solve : Software used for Reconstruction?

Answer» HELLO guys,

On TV sometimes is shown a reconstruction of how an accident could have happened, for EXAMPLE, how a car overturned or an aeroplaned crashed. It is usually animation type.

Any idea what software is used to come up with such reconstructions?

Thanks in advance. I guess this would require video editing software.  Does that sound right to you?  Hello soybean,

Thank you the the feedback.

I am afraid not. Maybe if you provide a little more information. Video Editing would entail I already have video's right? In this case my INTEREST would be like to create "dummies" of, for example, showing how it may have overturned.

Thanks. Well, I'm really not familiar with the software in this area.  Perhaps someone else can chime in.

You might also peruse the FINDINGS at https://www.google.com/#q=video+creation+softwareHere's a Bunch...High-end physics simulators, much like the ones used by engineers for wind-tunnel experiments, which simulate things such as lift/drag, temperature, torsion, etc.

i would take loads of photos at the scene then use some 3d modelling software to match up the positions and angles of the photos to reconstruct the scene as i saw it. many things can then be DEDUCED from pen and paper physical calculations or with inbuilt physical simulators in the software.

Solve : converting any file into pdf?

What is a good pdf file CONVERTER pref free, I am a bit doubtfull at downloading any on offer because of the the risk of downloading stuff I do not want or need. Some of them have opt out causes for the software you don't want but a soon as I say no the download stops. I USE doPDF7   http://www.dopdf.com/

No problems, free, and works well. * Just not sure if it has any opt out check boxes or not that by default are checked to install everything you dont want + the program you need. So many these days are trying to push McAfee, AVG, or a Yahoo Toolbar to you etc, INCLUDING Adobe itself which is sad for a company that big to become added to the list of sneaky bundleware installers.

It is part of a standard workstation install where I work (financial branch of a large legal organisation) and I use it every day.
Alternatively, if your need for conversion to PDF is rather limited, a few online conversion SERVICES are available.  One I like is http://www.freepdfconvert.com/Am I right assuming that if you convert a jpeg file into a pdf file I can edit it. I am trying to clear some old post cards (funny) from picassa and put them in a slide show using power point in order to save them. The one I trying to manipulate has three elements two sets of text and one photo I wish to break these elements apart and place them where I want on a slide. I am using office 7. I know that picassa has it its own way of doing it, but I need a project to keep me occupied and also re-learn the software, syndromeThe PDF converters we have been talking about are not editors. For that you would need either Adobe Acrobat or one of the other PDF editors available, and in any case if you wanted to cut elements of a Jpeg image and rearrange them you would be better doing it prior to PDF conversion, using an image editor such as Picasa or Microsoft Paint which is installed with Windows.Thank you salmon trout, all the time I have had paint I did not know you could do that with it. You have tought me something new and I am very greatful.

Do you actually mean you are using MS Office 2007?  I'm not aware of any product called office 7.

If you are using Word in Office 2007 then it has the ability to save documents as a PDF.  You could create your document, assembling the pictures and text arranged how you like, then save it as a PDF.  If you also save the document as a Word DOC file then you would be able to open it later, edit it, then save as a PDF.

Solve : Converting a Dynamic disk to Simple, and formatting from external tool?

Answer»

I bought a Lenovo G700 laptop almost brand new that came with Windows 8 pre-installed but whose previous owner installed Windows 7 Home Premium on it.

When I EXAMINED that laptop I found two for me estrange things:
1.    There is a 100 MB partition, with 60 MG used only and without letter.
2.    Instead of primary and logical partitions, its 500 GB disk has SIMPLE volumes. That is, it's a dynamic disk; first time I see that.

I've read a lot about and LEARNED that the 100 MB partition is required for recovering operating system, something that my desktop, where I installed Windows 7 upgrading from XP one year ago, has not. And I also learned that dynamic disks are better than basic ones, but for reasons I don't understand and I don't plan to use. I PREFER to keep using basic disks and primary/logical partitions.

Since I already got very familiar with the Windows 7 installed in my desktop, I want to get the laptop as much equal to my desktop as possible. In order to achieve that I need to convert dynamic disk into basic, so that I can make System Image using 'EaseUS Todo Backup', and I can manage partitions using 'EaseUS Partition Master' like I've done for years.

However, for reasons I ignore, sometimes that laptop takes about 3 minutes to start up, and I suspect that
•    Something was wrong when Windows 7 was installed instead or on top of Windows 8, and that,
•    Maybe, partition in point 1 above is good to recover Windows 8 only but USELESS with Windows 7. I just changed its letter —it had a hidden E and I changed to Z— and nothing changed in the laptop operation; so I put back the E letter.

So, if something goes wrong when changing dynamic to basic, I'd like to format the disk and proceed to make a Windows 7 fresh installation, but I have some questions about.

1.    What program, resident in an external media —CD or pendrive—, could I use to format the disk?
2.    Should I keep the supposed recovery partition? I repeat: In my desktop I upgraded from XP to Windows 7, and disks remained basic, and no recovering partition was created.
Sounds like quite the mess.

As far as changing partition types this is generally handled by default by the installation ROUTINES of the OS Disc when installing to a bare HDD or SSD.

Two suggestions I have are the following after backing up any important data you may have on this system:

#1 - If you want Windows 7 to run clean on this correctly, I would use a program such as jellybean to figure out the key that was activated for this Windows 7 install and write down the key. Then use the Windows 7 installation disc or an XP installation disc and boot off of it and at a point in this process it will allow for you to delete partitions that are detected and it will show details about the partitions. After deleting all partitions, if using Windows XP disc to delete partitions, you can remove the disc and then place the Windows 7 disc into the drive, and then hold the power button to force shutdown of the system. Next boot the system up and boot off of the Windows 7 disc and perform a clean install. Windows 7 will build the necessary partitions clean. When done with Windows 7 install you will have the key to activate with from what jellybean provided for you. *As long as this is a legit key and it hasnt been activated too many times or flagged as a pirated key it should activate with no problems.  (**** Another method of partition deletions is to use a bootable Linux disc to wipe the partitions and make the drive bare... but its best to use XP or 7 bootable original OS disc instead of the Linux method, especially if your not familiar with Linux. )

#2 - Contact the manufacturer of the laptop to obtain the system recovery media for some day when you want to install Windows 8 to it. This might come at a charge of around $35. ( * Do not tell them that this computer is second hand, tell them that you are the original owner.... have experienced issues with ownership that was not original ownership and had to place a second call with a different support specialist and lie to state that I was the original owner when asked  to get the media I needed and still had to pay $35 for )

Solve : Renewing McAfee?

I have had McAfee Total Protection for my laptop and PC for the past YEAR.  It will cost me $22 to BUY McAfee Total Protection for 3 computers through AMAZON.com.  The McAfee website says it will cost $59 to renew.  Will it be easy for me to use the McAfee I buy through Amazon to continue my virus protection?  I've read about the use of free virus protection recommended by the experts on this site and I understand the value; however I am older and am really asking for what is going to be the easiest for me to continue to protect my computers.  I've accidentally turned off my virus protection and gotten viruses before.  I've accidentally let my virus protection lapse.  I really just want something that's almost idiot-proof and easy.  THANKS for your help from a computer-challenged older person. You need to check out Avast Anti-Virus.  It will allow you to customize it based on services that you require.

It's also free and almost idiot proof.
A second vote for Avast Free Anti-Virus.  NOTE: Even though we're talking about a free version, they still require an ANNUAL registration renewal.  They will alert you when the registration needs to be renewed.

Solve : Why are they still making 32 Bit??

Answer»

Hi, I was just wondering why is 32 bit still a option for windows 8 or any windows for that matter.
I'm not 100% educated about operating systems and the 32 bit and 64 bit. But it seems that 64 bit is so much better I just don't understand why they still make 32 bit.
If there is a actually reason I would love to know.

Thanks...Well, many people will keep using 32bit because:
A. ) New hardware costs money.
B. ) Even if it was free some would never change.

As for the memory advantage, some older PCs do not have 64  CPUs. But hey do have the PAE feature,m which allows more memory  if the OS supports it.

Windows 8 32 bit supports PAE. So it is possible to have 6 GB in an OS theat only directly reads 3 GB of memory.
Override the 4GB memory barrier on 32-bit Windows 8.1 systems.
Quote

Although the 64-bit transition period has come and gone, there are a surprising number of active installations of the 32-bit Windows operating system, particularly in industrial or business environments. One plausible explanation is the fact that backwards compatibility with older 16-bit Windows code is not possible on 64-bit Window
My laptop is 32 bit and I an not ready to  toss  it out.

XP had 64 bit. Vista had 64 bit. Windows 7 had 64 bit and XP mode for LEGACY applications and I have no idea why Microsoft continues to placate the community on Windows 8.
Apple made the transition to 64bit pretty quickly. While 32bit is certainly on its way out, there are still some 32bit CPUs that are still usable today - I'm thinking particularly of Core Duo CPUs in laptops.I have read more than 1 rant on various forums where some USER is outraged that his shiny, new, 64-bit Win 8 computer can't run some PIECE of SOFTWARE that he's been using since 1990.  These rants condemn MS as being scum and pirates for leaving consumers hung out to dry. There is no shortage of old computers that run 16 bit software.
Before  Intel introduced the i386, all IBM PCs were 16 bit computers. The original have a 8 bit data path. Then it went to a 16 bit data path with a 20 bit address. Anyway, 16bit computerizing should be put to rest. It was mistake.

Or mount the drive in a DESKTOP PC.
The file system shouldn't matter...the files should either show up or not.
What happens if you look at the drive in Disk Management ? ?
Right clik My Computer...select Manage...then Disk Management.
Then right clik the drive and select properties...

Solve : sprtcmd.exe Error (help)?

Answer»

If this is in the wrong area then please move it to the correct area. Thank you.

I'm getting a strange error. It doesn't effect my computer and it doesn't pop up in my problem reports.

It's a red "X" pop-up error that says "sprtcmd.exe - Ordinal Not Found. The ordinal 3873 could not be located in the dynamic link library LIBEAY32.dll"

I tried googling "sprtcmd.exe" and it says it USUALLY comes with Dell Support Center, which I have because my computer is a Dell. It also said I could simply uninstall Dell Support Center to stop the error.

Or is Google wrong? How do I fix this error? Will uninstalling Dell Support Center fix the error? If not what can I do to stop this error from showing up. It only seemed to happen when I was listening to music but it popped up on computer startup on me today.

Is uninstalling Dell Support Center safe? Will my computer be okay if I do this?

If I uninstall Dell Support Center, should I MAKE a system restore point just be safe?

I'd really appreciate any help anyone here could give me with this.

Thanks.

P.S.: My operating system is Windows VistaYou can try re-installing or do a repair install if possible. Also you can check for updates of dell support center on dell website from the page from where you dowmload drivers. If it still bothers you, you can safely remove dell support center. There won't be any problem. My warranty on this Dell in question has been expired for a LONG time though.

So what do you think I should do? Try to update it or just uninstall it?First try Update (if new version available). If you still experience problems, uninstall it.Drivers are FREE...whether your warranty has expired...or not.Where do I go to find if a new update for it is available then? The Dell site. Can you please be more specific? Like a link or something? Please?Really ? ?The error doesn't seem to be damaging anything.

I guess I'll just deal with it.

Thanks for all of the help though. For a link to dowloads, we need your laptop model no. Other wise goto dell.website under supports and downloads, find place to enter your service tag. Your laptop's service tag can be found under your laptop where model no. is written. Enter the service tag in the website and  chose your operating system. It will list all the supported drivers and softwares for your laptop.the ordinal 3873 in the libeay32.dll has nothing to do with Dell. It has also happened in mine which I assembled myself. This is a Windows problem like so many other problems microsoft has laid upon us. If Linux supported so many softwares as microsoft I would have installed linux which has a much better kernel.

This may be due to a corrupt dll file or malware. It does no good to install a new libeay32.dll since the problem leads to the registry, and that is something beyond my current knowledge, except that you have to be very careful when messing around with the registry.

If you have a previous restore point USE it. The problem may go away. Occasionally some new software you installed may have caused the problem. If this were the case, uninstalling the your most recent software and then REINSTALLING it again may be a solution. And I say MAY BE.

Regardless, perform a full scan of your laptop with Malwarebytes, plus whatever antivirus you may have installed. You could also try running sfc/scannow from the command prompt (run cmd) as administrator. There are is another better antimalware program but it's tricky to install.Or from a command prompt type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter...have your Vista CD handy as it may ask for it.
Re-boot afterwards

Solve : Thunderbird e-Mail Issue after its been open for an hour or so??

Answer»

So I have been using Thunderbird for the last 5 months so that I have my many e-mail's accessible to one LOCATION to check on. This includes 3 yahoo e-mail accounts, 1 gmail account, and 1 ISP e-mail account.

Up until about 2 weeks ago Thunderbird worked flawless, but recently when I launch Thunderbird and check e-mail it works at the beginning. Then if you leave Thunderbird open for a period of time and then create a new e-mail to someone say 2 hours later and then click send,  it appears as though its going to send the e-mail and then you see a message box showing its attempting to communicate with green status BAR. It then times out and states SOMETHING about the password may be incorrect for the e-mail address.

When this happens I save the e-mails that I want to send as drafts, and then close Thunderbird and then launch Thunderbird again at which point any new e-mail I receive upon reconnection with the mail servers and I can click to send my e-mail from the drafts bin, and they send with no problems.

Anyone SEEN this issue before to point out the cause?

One thing I am going to try is to see if I can extend the time before timeout, but I have doubts that this will fix this issue. I have broadband internet and everything happens quickly when downloading and uploading data etc, so a 16k in size e-mail shouldn't time out and then suggest that I may need to reenter my password.

LOL  Yep, I would.  I used it for quite awhile before switching to Outlook.  I would too, Thunderbird has been working fine for me though. I USE two E-mail clients to separate some of my personal accounts from my work accounts, so I use Outlook for work and Thunderbird for my personal accounts.

Solve : Windows 7, HP Pavilion DV6-5105ea start up problem?

Answer»

Hi,
I am having problems with my HP Pavilion DV6-5105ea.
When i turn the laptop on, it goes past the HP logo, then i am greeted with the windows error recovery window. If i let windows START normally then it goes to load up, but then restarts without actually loading up properly. After automatically repeating this process 2-3 times it will EVENTUALLY load up but with a buzzing noise. After no longer than a minute it will then go to the blue SCREEN (i think its the system error screen) but there are multiple screens in two columns, then the process starts again.
Can anyone help?
THANKS in advance

Solve : internet explorer breaks down?

Answer»

when I download from a particular website which does calculations and CONVERTS to a pdf     internet explorer breaks down on windows 7   on my old nec laptop XP it works okay and converts the pdf okay  but not on my windows 7

question.    is it due to programs on my computer making too much demand and breaking it down and would removing some programs fix the problem.

how do I find out which programs are causing it.?What is the app that converts the data to a PDF ? ?it breaks down on windows 7 before it gets to the pdf part of the process it doesn't access the website and do the calculation.  the program is one I wrote in conjunction with assistance from a PROGRAMMER. it is in perl.   I have the IMPRESSION my computer is not powerful enough to cope with the request.  on the Vista computer it reads the calculatrions and brings the output up on screen but does not process to pdf  I can print from screen to get the output.   The old NEC xp laptop does it all.

my thoughts are  is it something overworking my computer that causes it to BREAK down. if so where should I start looking.
If it's a Win7 PC it likely has more horsepower than the XP PC...
We need the site info and the name of the conversion software app to assist any further.

My workplace uses MICROSOFT EXCHANGE emails, & we use microsoftonline office365 server instead of housing email servers ourselves.
However, I'm required to set up a email user account on a desktop that has neither MSOffice SUITE or internet ACCESS,
so have to resort to OUTLOOK Express. The thing is Outlook Express has only POP3, IMAP, or HTTP configurations, not Microsoft exchange

So are there any alternative Email software that I can setup a Microsoft exchange email user with? No, you need Microsoft Outlook for use with MS Exchange.

Solve : JASC Paint Shop Photo Album?

Answer»

I use JASC Paint Shop Photo Album, which I received included with JASC Paint Shop Pro 8, to organise and edit my photographs. In addition I use it to make image notes and comments etc.  I have been doing this for years and have spent ages annotating older photographs which I have scanned in.

Anyway, I recently did a clean install of Windows 7 to REPLACE XP which I was using PREVIOUSLY.  I backed up all my files etc.  However, having reinstalled Pant Shop Photo Album from the disc, it now works fine, and I restored image information from the backup file, but all my painstakingly made notes are gone.

Can anyone confirm for me whether these notes would be included in the image information back up file?  If not, where is that data stored?  How do I get my notes back?A quick search for notes was fruitless...i'd double check the directory structure in your BACKUPS...other than that they do have a FORUM...maybe some answers there...

Solve : Can I fill in a form by converting it to PDF??

Can I fill in a form by converting it to PDF?
This is not about sailing in an online form online. Instead, it is about downloading and filling in a form I got off-line.
This form is not to be submitted through website, but rather it is to be delivered in person or by mail. So I WANT to get the form off of a website, convert it to a PDF, and then fill in the forms on screen and then printe again as a completed filled in the form that I can mail to the proper agency.

Now, then, I have NEVER done this. Am I going about this the wrong way? Is it practical to get a form and then converted to PDF and then fill in the form using the PDF editor? Any suggestions welcome.
Why not convert it to PDF...make a few of them without printing...fill it in on the PC and then print it.

Use the extras for spell-check errors. What type of file is the form on the source website? Some forms I found are in PDF format

IF I can fill out the form right, I can go to the local recorder and have it filled as an official document. But if I were to hire somebody,. it can cost hundreds of dollars. I just want to save some money and do it myself.

I have not yet tried to edit it. Will Foxit  work, or should I use the Adobe program?

Solve : Don'gt build, just borrow a template.?

Some users come here WANTING a full blown program to do something that has already been done many times over.
    Like this:

      • find the best way to drive in the snow.My job
      • to make a MODEL of World War for class project. II.

No, there are templates by the scores.

Solve : need help with organizing folders on certain dates?

Answer»

Hello everyone,

I tried looking around the net but cannot find what i am looking for. I NEED a program that activate folders on certain dates.

For example

i run a restaurant that changes its menu cycle every month. the staff need to know what the menu specs are currently active for that month. All menu specs are PUT in folders for each month. Is there any program i can use that the folders can automatically trigger itself to show on the desktop while archiving the previous month untill that month comes along again? it has to been simple program that the folders activate itself. please help

thanks

Some detail please.
Is this an application you wrote? A costume application?
Or some method s normally used in you business model?

The windows explorer open folders on your desktop. But how to schedule it is unknown to me. Maybe others here know how.

But and alternative is  a browser to d read  HTML  files. That is m ore versatile and often there is a way to schedule  HTML files to start on a certain day.

I'm not sure about a 3rd party programs but it is possible to automatically open a folder with dynamic name, that represents the current month, by using Windows Task Scheduler and a batch file.
Assuming that you have a folder on Desktop named "Menu", WITHIN that Menu folder, create subfolders named 01,02,03,...,11,12 that will represent each month and put the restaurant menues in those folders.
01 is for January, 11 is to November ... you get the idea.
In the same "Menu" folder, create a text file and copy/paste this in there
CODE: [Select]echo off & for /F "tokens=1-4 delims=/ " %%A in ('date/t') do (
set DateWeekday=%%A
set DateMonth=%%B
set DateDay=%%C
set DateYear=%%D
)

set CurrentDate=%DateMonth%
%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe "C:\Users\YourUsername\Desktop\Menu\%CurrentDate%

In this code, replace the word "YourUsername" with the ACCOUNT owner name so the path will be correct.
Now save the changes, close the file, rename it to Menu.bat (no txt extension anymore).
This is how your Menu folder should look like.

Test it to make sure it opens the folder that you need.If you double click on Menu.bat it must open a folder named "03" which represents March.Next month if you double click on
it it will open 04 folder , e.t.c. you get the idea.
Now you have a batch file that you can run with Windows Task Scheduler automatically so you don't have to manually double click on it.For example, if you want the folder to open every time you power on the computer then schedule a task as described here
Start button> in search bar type Task Scheduler and open it> on the right side of the Task Scheduler window click on Create Basic Task >name it "Menu" or something that you will recognize easier in future > Press Next>
This is the most important part. When do you want Menu.bat to be executed(when do you want to open "03" folder) ? In this example I'll assume
you want to open the "03" folder every time you power on the computer and type in your password to log in.Choose the "At log on" option and
press Next. The default selection is "Start a program", leave it that way and press Next. Now you must specify
what program/script you want to execute.Press the "Browse" button, locate the Menu.bat file(which is in this case located in C:\Users\Yourusername\Desktop\Menu folder , but you can put it anywhere you want). Then press Next. Then press Finish. You will notice the new task named "Menu" in the central part of the Task Scheduler window. If you double click on it you can customize it to run regardless whether the computer is on battery power or plugged in,start the task if the computer is idle or busy or regardless of state. The "task" here means running the "Menu.bat" file which will open the folder that represents current month.
If you want to run this every day at a specific time, double click on "Menu" task to open the settings window, click on "Triggers" tab ,press Edit.Next to "Begin the task"
you can choose the schedule.Or you can even run it when another program is executed.

I don't take credit for writing the batch file above. It was "ripped" from Google then modified to work better in this case.
This file will work properly if your computer date is in this format MM/DD/YYYYMaybe what the OP needs is some kind of thing like a time management program. On certain dates a task will start. Some of this is included in a Calendar app.
10 Best Calendar Apps (Tom's Hardware)
The OP may want to review info about the windows task Scheduler.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Task_Scheduler
That is all I can think of for now.

Solve : anyone know of a program/facility that can do flow charts as web pages??

Answer»

Hi all. I want to be able to create a flow-chart type of process of questions and answers, but as a series of web pages rather than the traditional flow chart diagram.    So you WOULD start at a page which has the initial question, and then the possible answers would each be links to the next page, which would then offer further conditions/questions etc, etc etc.

I just need to create a real simple decision-assisting online process that would be very smartphone/tablet-friendly.

Does anyone know of an application or program that can create this?  I have spent ages searching online, but because I don't really know how to describe it formally, it's hard to know what to actually search for. I basically just keep coming to flow chart software, and although it's the right process, it isn't the 'LOOK' I require at all.

many thanks!

billyd

There are a number of ways to do this, even going to the extreme low tech of just basic HTML with Hyperlinks as well as if you really want to make for a user interface, a hyperlink mapped image via use of a tool called Mapedit to select an x,y grid area to be sensitive to click/touch area by user. Mapedit would allow you to make a user interface with MSPaint to create your image. This image would have the button look that you want. You then use Mapedit and select the area for the buttons that will be active to pointing to a hyperlink. Then you save changes and upload this to webserver. Then when you go to the site you have a user interface that looks like its backed by a more complex programming, but instead its just a very creative HTML trick with Mapedit.

I was introduced to Mapedit many years ago when in college. It came bundled with a HTML book I had and I installed it and played around with it. It allowed me to make a HTML video game that followed a linear flow from beginning to end. Sort of like a HTML point and click Myst Type of game where you had to solve puzzles etc. Upon successfully following the correct route out of the loop you progressed to the next puzzle. Mapedit allowed for this interface to be created as well as ability to take images that were mixed together with photoshop too look more professional than MSPaint and make for a better play game with effects. For animations in the game, I PERFORMED GIF overlays etc for running water or other objects in the game that moved to move both interactive and non interactive details on the screen, or simply didnt have to use a GIF to perform turning a virtual light bulb on or off by use of a mapedit hperlink mapping for on-click change of a picture such as light_on.jpg switched to light_off.jpg when clicked to make for interactive effects that look ADVANCED but are not really that advanced when looking at the HTML code to make it happen.

The most important detail would be knowing your viewing area for these devices so that a user is not scrolling up and down and side to side etc.

Knowing the view area of the devices that will connect to this webpage you then can have buttons that are interactive. Attached is a  sample of an image created with MSPaint that you could add to a HTML webpage to display, and map the interactive X,y coordinates with Mapedit so that the entire button area for the colors when tapped or clicked will send the guest to the next webpage with more interactive content that can follow a flow chart that is a static chart.

NOW... If you want it to be dynamic content included, that is they enter their name and that info is then added such as a welcome display with their name, then this is best done with PHP or another scripting language for HTML. You can do it either way static or dynamic, its all up to personal preference and mainly if the content interactive is static ( always the same for all users ) or dynamic ( names change, or other info that is different based on user ) * Although if you had way too much time on your hands you could create the ability for a user to follow a static flow to enter their name such as BOB in which they select B and then O and this then sends them down the path that includes BOB, Bonnie, Bow, etc and upon tapping or selecting the following B it then states a confirmation if your name is BOB and if it is it runs to the main HTML content beyond the static route name madness, however if the name is wrong they can be routed back to index.html which starts back over again with entering name.

BTW: The attached image is just an image. In order for it to be interactive you would need to call this image within HTML to display the image, and then open the HTML file with MAPedit which would display all image links contained within that HTML file. You then select the image file you want to map and then you fairly easily select an area similar to cropping and then specifiy that this is going to be hyperlinked to the next page that this button selection would pass a user to. When all buttons are mapped you have a fully functional low tech method of an interactive flow chart.

Here is a link to Mapedit that I have used in the past: http://www.boutell.com/mapedit/

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]Dave, thanks very much for such a detailed and comprehensive reply!

I think that simply just building it as a series of pages with hyperlinks probably will be the way, and the idea of just having simple images with mapped hyperlinks is a really good one. You can actually assign mapped areas directly to an image from the image properties dialogue box in dreamweaver, so I probably wouldn't need to use mapedit but thanks for the info about it anyway.   And yes, top tip re understanding the viewing screen size. I will start from that and then work out the plan thereof.

Thanks again mate, much appreciated. What is the real objective?
A nice interactive presentation of diagrams and text?
Are the diagrams crisp sharp lines like art work by a draftsman or nice photos done by a photographer?
If photos, use HTML and JPG
Otherwise use some kin of Adobe product or something like it.
Look for Interactive PDF pages on web site.
Here is one of many:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kckzlt_Luc0
Of course this is a video. The actual pages look batter.
It is a very useful idea. No, the objective isn't really about the appearance, nor indeed pictures or prettiness. I am needing to create a set series of questions and options, so that the user can arrive at the correct decision for their circumstances. So it is exactly a flow-chart-like procedure, but rather than the flow-chart approach of rectangles, lines, diamonds etc, it's a series of smartphone pages that the user is taken through, each with the next question/options.  So, yes, it could all be done perfectly easily just with html, simply building each question as a page and hyperlinking them together. But that seems rather a hack way of doing it.  My guess was that actually this is a pretty standard sort of requirement so there must surely be a bit of software to automate the task. But maybe not...

This is the way to do it without HTML Hyperlink smoke and mirrors

You need a WYSIWYG for Mobile App development ...
