Solve : Outlook Rule help?

Answer»

Hi,

I would LIKE to flag a message if there is text in the BODY (what text does not matter, any text).

The reason behind is that I receive a lot of meeting replies (I send out a lot of meeting requests). I forward these replies to a separate folder. However, if someone has written something in the meeting reply I would like a rule to detect this and flag this reply with a flag or something.

Best Regards
Stefan

Solve : Looking for a free conversion tool please?

Answer»

Hi Everyone,

Just got a new computer a couple of months ago.  The files on my old computer were saved from a crashed hard drive.  I have MANAGED to get a lot of them back into working order but I have some files from old programs that I can't manage to convert and was wondering if anyone KNEW of some free software that I can convert these files.

The files in QUESTION are Lotus 123, Lotus Wordpro and Corel Quattro Pro files.  I really don't WANT to have to spend another $150.00 to purchase Microsoft Office just to convert these files.  Also, I have a few pics in Bitmap format.  Any ideas there would be greatly appreciated about conversion.

Thank you,
Kaderina   Kaderina....  you might wish to look at this link .... it shows you some alternatives.

convert lotus 123 ......
http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Business/Word_Processing/ABC_Amber_Lotus_1_2_3_Converter.html

Hope this helps you.

dl65  Thanks dl65,

I'll give those sites a try.

Kaderina Kaderina....what software do you have installed on the new machine that will handle text editing ?
Do you have any photo editing software installed ?

dl65  Hi dl65,

The machine has Microsoft Works.  It did have a trial version of Microsoft office but you had to purchase it to get the extra conversion tools.  Thats expired now.  My old version of Lotus won't install.  Just too old as it's a 95 version.  I'm downloading the copy of OpenOffice right now.  It looks promising.  I can let you know how it works out if your interested.

As for the photo's, I have Adobe Photoshop 5.0 but it can't seem to open the files. I lost a few pics with the failed hard drive.  It may be that they are corrupt.  I just don't know?  Back before the Microsoft Office expired, I tried to open them with Microsoft Office picture manager but it couldn't open them either.  I have a feeling they are unrecoverable.

Anyway, thanks for your assistance.  I really appreciate it.

Kaderina  You could just download OpenOffice.org, which is the free full office suite, which can open many different formats of file.Hi dl65 and Guru,

I downloaded the OpenOffice.  I have been able to open the Lotus 123 and Bitmap photo's using this program.    This program is unable to convert the Lotus Wordpro and Corel Quattro Pro files.   :-/  Thanks for your HELP.  I appreciate your time.

Solve : Trouble Running PSP7?

Answer»

I'm having a bit of trouble running Paint Shop Pro 7 on my profile, even it works just fine on someone else's. I HONESTLY have no clue what the problem is.
If I pull up my processes via the task manager, it shows up, but it doesn't show up under applications. I've tried accessing it from shortcuts, program files, its original folder, and other PROFILES, but it just won't run. Its not allowing me to open any pictures with the program, either.

Its been acting up for about a week. The original problem occured when I was trying to export an animation frame to PSP7, and my computer locked up. The system isn't infected with a virus or anything, and I've tried restarting and shutting down the computer. The strange thing about it is, that the program works everywhere... except on my profile.

Can anyone help? Blasphemy.....  You havent PROVIDED a lot of info ....however , try creating a new user account for yourself and see if you can utilize PSP7 on your new user account .

dl65   Quote

Blasphemy.....  You havent provided a lot of info ....however , try creating a new user account for yourself and see if you can utilize PSP7 on your new user account .

dl65

I'm sorry. I really don't know what information to provide. I created a new account, and it runs fine. It runs on every account on the computer, except for one (the one I'm on now.) Blasphemy... ok ...thats good. Do you have access to everything in your problematic (old)user account .....in the new user account you have created.

If the answer is yes .....then simply delete the old user account and use the new one you have created .

dl65  Yes, I have access to everything. And I thank you very much for your assistance. However, (and I don't mean to question you) this seems like an awful lot to go through just because one program isn't running. Is this the only way to resolve the problem? Should I provide you with more information?LOl ...there's nothing wrong with asking questions......... It's just that in your situation , it's probably much quicker to create a new user account as you have done as opposed to LOOKING for the actual cause of the issue.

dl65  I'd prefer to find/know the actual cause, though... In case something like this HAPPENS again. That way I can fix it myself. It feels like I'm just buying a new bike instead of fixing a couple of loose bolts. But I don't know how to find the cause, or where to begin in terms of fixing it.

Solve : OE6 compacting messages nag box?

Answer»

This is probably an ez question for someone to answer, but I haven't found it myself so here goes:

When I use OE6 and then when finished with all my emails, then close OE6, a nag box immediately pops up that reads:

To free up disk space, Outlook Express can compact messages. This MAY take up to a few minutes. OK or Cancel.

I always hit Cancel cuz I don't want to compact any messages. I've been all thru Tools>Options and can't find a button to turn this off. Annoying as all get out.

Thanks in advance for any help with this.

“You can't remove the prompt. There is a registry edit that you can do to SET the counter to zero so you won't see the MESSAGE again for another 100 closings.”

“Compacting your folders periodically is a must to keep OE functioning well and at some point, you may lose all your saved messages if you don't. When you delete messages, they are only marked for deletion and the space they had used, remains until you compact, or the space is eventually overwritten.”

“Just get this marvelous little program called OE Tool. Wonderful thing to have. It's free too!  Button 14 will compact all folders and reset the counter to zero. This works better than the compacting in OE through Tools/options. You need to compact when OE gives you that message.  Button 10 is great also. It clears the TIF OE files that are dumped there that otherwise are not cleared ever. I had over 9000 in there when I first got OE tool!  I just checked again now...I hadn't used the button in awhile and I had 3589 files in TIF from OE that only will be cleared by this tool. I just LOVE this tool.”

“OETool is great and I use it. However, anyone using an English version of XP/SP2 should make sure they have all critical patches, (at least), at Windows Updates, and then download this one that will also reset the counter to zero, as well as back up the dbx files when it does.”

Here is the site for the OE Tool:

I have not used it so use at your own risk

Alan <><  Why are you not allowing IE to compact your messages?  Go ahead and do it.  It's a good thing.  And, that's the obvious way to stop the prompts.  Compact, and then the prompting will stop.

Solve : Canon i9100 print preview not showing?

Answer»

2 of my 3 PC's will drive my Canon i960 or i9100 PRINTERS with no problem. The 3rd PC prints fine, but will not preview on either printer. Even though I always request preview...

...on this PC only, either printer just fires right up without a preview... very frustrating.

I've reloaded drivers and generally wasted a bunch of time on the obstinate machine for weeks/months now, and am actually considering replacing the PC over this problem. (A user on another forum posted a similar issue with a Pixma printer last year, which he told me he only fixed by replacing his PC. )

The good PC's ... a Dell Inspiron 4150 P4M 2GHz XP PRO SP2 1G RAM, and an unbranded desktop P4 2GHz W2K SP4 1G RAM.

The bad PC ... an ECube AMD Athlon XP1700+ 1.46GHz XP Home SP2 480M RAM with no onboard CD drive (I replaced with a 2nd HDD for Ghost backups and Gigastudio instrument FILES). Reloading OS would be a pain (can I even do that from a network CD drive?).

I won't say I've tried everything, but I've certainly tried a lot. Since I have Ghost backups of my C drive, I felt safe just uninstalling software down to nearly nothing (I messed up Gigastudio in that process since it WIPED out D drive files too- my bad...  ). Anyway, when there was nothing left but ACDSee and Fotoslate (which I use for photo handling and printing) I STILL got no preview.

I guess it's worth it to me to start from scratch and reinstall everything (have to install a CD drive first?)... but only if it fixes the problem, and I don't have a lot of faith it would.  :-/   Maybe I have to replace the PC after all?

Any ideas, anyone?   Thanks.

Do you have the same applications installed on the problem PC as the other two PCs?  If you open WordPad, type in something, and click on the Preview button on the toolbar, it does not preview?  Is that right? On all PC's I print from Fotoslate 4 and sometimes ACDSee 5. Neither has a preview function. I rely on Canon's print preview instead.

I just tried Wordpad. I typed in a few words, did Wordpad's print preview (which worked fine), then did "Print" (from preview). It gave me the Canon i9100 preferences choices as usual, I checked "Preview before printing" as always, and hit OK. No Canon preview, printer just started printing.

Canon tech support has tried without success to help me (kind of nice since i9100 is way out of warranty, and I wasn't even the original purchaser). Maybe they'll come thru with a fix eventually. Meantime I'm shopping for a <$100 PIII 1GHz desktop here in Orlando- found a few possibilities on eBay.  :-/

Edit

Select Computer>Sensor from the left hand screen. You didn't give us any info about your mobo and/or chipset, how are we supposed to advise :-?

Did you read any info on the Speed Fan site here... :-?

This is an extract..
"First of all, you have to identify which temperature sensor is which. SpeedFan strictly adheres to available datasheets for each sensor chip. Please remember that hardware monitors are chips that do have some pins (small connectors) which should be connected to some additional hardware (temperature probes, thermistors or thermocouples) in ORDER to be able to read temperatures. Only a few hardware monitor chips do label their connectors with "CPU", "System" and the like. Most of them use labels like "Temp1", "LOCAL" or "Remote". The hardware manufacturers connect available pins to different temperature sensors basically according to the physical placement of components on the motherboard. This means that the same chip, an ITE IT8712F, for example, might be connected to a sensor diode measuring CPU temperature on Temp2 and, on a different hardware, it might be connected on Temp1. If you have a "Local" sensor and a "Remote" labeled one, this usually means that "Local" is the temperature of the monitor chip itself and "Remote" is the temperature read from a "remote" probe.
When you have properly identified which temperature sensor is which, try to lower the speed of each fan and look at reported speed and temperatures. If you do not allow SpeedFan to change any fan speed and set all the speeds too low, then SpeedFan won't be able to avoid overheating."

Solve : CD labels software?

Answer»

Windows XP

I'm transferring LPs to CDs and am in need of CD labels software.  If FREE, much better.  Thanks in advance for any assistance.  :-?Stick on labels can make CD's inherently un-balanced and DAMAGE your burner...invest in a Light-Scribe burner instead.

It will cost you less than a label package and two CARTRIDGES of ink.proph, you use your PHONOGRAPH through your line-in and record with programs such as Audacity and then transfer to CD-R.  Very simple.  Thanks for your assistance.

patio, I've heard that about the labels on CDs before but have NEVER had any problems.  I do have Lightscribe but, will it write to any media, or do you need Lightscribe's own?  Thanks.  :-/The media has to be LightScribe in order to burn a label to it...

Solve : DirectX 9.0c help installing?

Answer»

Hello, I'm new here and I was wondering if SOMEONE could help me install directx 9.0c on my computer.

My computer is a Dell Dimension 2400 with WINDOWS XP on it... I have downloaded the DirectX components but now i cant install it. When I try to install it this is the error message I get: A cabinet file necessary for installation cannot be trusted. Please verify the Cryptographic Services are enabled and the cabinet file certificate is valid.

I went to GeekSquad but it turns out that they want $79 for their remote access help and I don't have that money to spend for 10 minutes of help, if that. (I'm still a minor )

So, if someone could help me fix this problem it would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT: I went to control panel > administrative tools > services > cryptographic services and made sure that it was on automatic... so that means that the cabinet file certificate is messed up.From the mothership:

Solve : Installing Game Problems?

Answer»

Well, i get my paycheck, and pick myself up a nice NEW game. battlefield 2142, to be exact. I pop it in the CD drive, start installing it, only to be stopped at the very end with a message saying that it does not have the WINDOWS logo, therefore it will not CONTINUE installation. I checked the driver signer under system in the control panel, set it to ignore if it is windoes verified or not, yet this problem still occurs. Then another message pops up saying that directx could not be installed. when i try to launch the game, it tells me that d3dx_29.dll is missing. so, my friends, how can i fix this problem?

as well, when i try to reinstall directx entirely, it tells me that windows is not activated, therefore it cannot be verified, and cannot download it. but iknow for a fact that this windows is activated, and that its a legal version. Can you get updates via the Windows Update site?

It sounds like you need to call Microsoft to start solving this dilemma. You might want to check the game maker's web site to see if others have reported similar issues.

Solve : Switching between accounts in Outlook Express?

Answer»

Initially I have one account with one identity set up in my Outlook Express.
Now that I ADD another new account, with the initial account set as Default, how can I switch to the second account after running Outlook Express which loads the first account by default?
Thanks.I'm not sure if I understand you correctly.

Click on File -> Switch Identity and choose the other identityThere is only one identity, but two accounts.By SWITCHING, do you mean for retreiving EMAIL or sending email?  At the top of your OE, you should have a BUTTON called Send/Recv on the toolbar and it should a drop arrow on it's right side.  To receive email from an account other than the default account, click on the arrow and select the account from the list.

You can also set any and all accounts to be included in mail retrieval any time you open OE or click on Send/Recv button.  To do this, go to Tools, Accounts, select the account, click on Properties, and check the box for "Include this account when receiving mail or SYNCHRONIZING".

Solve : Problems with Powerpoint presentation?

Answer»

I have a Powerpoint presentation which, on some slides, advances to the next slide immediately after the last animation has finished, so no-one gets a chance to look at whatever is animated, for example they can't read the text because it disappears straight after it appears and goes to the next slide
This doesn't happen with all of the slides, about 8 out of 11 or so, which is quite strange
The presentation was created on MS Powerpoint 2003 and Powerpoint in Office XP (not sure which version that is)
I did open it in Openoffice Impress on my computer straight after I created it on Powerpoint 2003 at school, and realised that I couldn't use Openoffice because it didn't DISPALY correctly, everything was in the wrong place (this is apparently a known problem and cant be solved until MS make their file formats open source, according to OO.O help)
So I just used Impress to correct a few spelling mistakes and re-saved
Then over the next few days I ADDED to it with Powerpoint, then I had a look through it and the above problem occurred
Unofrtunately I have no idea when this problem started creeping in, so it could have been caused by Openoffice or Office XP
Does anyone have any ideas why this would be happening?
By the way, I've already checked the MS help site, and couldn't find anything helpful there, and I've checked that no slide timings are set or anything like that, all slides are set to advance on mouse clickBased on your info, the most probable cause seems to be modifying of the file in Open Office.  I'm inclined to think you might as well open a blank PowerPoint window and start over.  Hopefully, you can copy and paste some of the content from your existing file.

As FAR as using both PowerPoint 2003 and PowerPoint XP, I don't know WHETHER that would cause any problems.  Next time, be sure to keep backup copies of the file before you open and/or modify it in ANOTHER version of PowerPoint or some other slide creation program such as Open Office.I thought it was most likely to be Openoffice rather than something I clicked or using Office XP, I just wanted a more informed opinion
I'll try and remember to keep a backup of it next time, I just didn't think about it
I was just wondering if it was a documented problem, the other strange thing is that although it displays wrong in Openoffice, it works perfectly - all the animations are fine, the slides behave themselves, and so on
Never mind, I'll do it again over the weekend using only Powerpoint
Thanks for the helpif you want you can zip it and i can look at it just remove any personal info..Thanks, but it's not that important any more, I've already done it again
Only took me about half an hour
Next time I'll just be sure to keep a backup
Thanks anywaynpCan't you just select the don't move onto the next slide without a mouse click option? :-?I already did, that was one of the first things I tried
That's why it was confusing me
Thanks for pointing it out anyway

Solve : Accessing CDRW?

Answer»

Maybe this is more hardware related than SOFTWARE but will try here first...

USING Win.XP Home SP.2 and Nero 5.5 I burned a folder and six files to a cdrw.  At a later time I added a further six files in one session.  The first seven items are accessible using XP but the others are not visible when the cdrw is opened or when Dir is run at the command prompt using the same cd writer.  Also tried another two pc's and a laptop all RUNNING XP Home with the same result.

However, using a pc running Win.98se all files are accessible.  Just to CHECK it out I swapped the original cd writer into the pc running Win.98se and was able to access all files.

Visually the cdrw appears to have an area where data has been burned then a "gap" then a further burned area.

As you'll appreciate this is not a problem as all data can be or has been recovered using Win.98se, I'm just curious as to what circumstance(s) might have caused XP to falter.  No other multi-session cdrw's burned both before and after this one have caused any problems.

Thanks.

Edit: To add to my confusion I burned a copy of the cdrw and all files were burned and accessible on the copy....Chances are the CD was never "finalised in the BURN process...the fact you were able to later add files illustrates this.
DLoad and install ISOBuster which can read a non finalised burn then move your files back to the HDD and re-burn the project the way you want to and remember to finalise the CD

Solve : Outlook Express-can't delete?

Answer»

Hi,
I am using OUTLOOK Express and while I can receive and send e-mails, I can't delete any messages I receive.  Nothing I do will work and the only message I received regarding this OCCURRED when I tried to delete more than one at a time and that message said "unable to delete selected message(s) an error has occurred".  One thing to note, I was able to delete messages yesterday except for one e-mail I received from eBay that I receive daily (Daily selling status) and when I clicked on this one, my OE locked up (and still does today).  I would APPRECIATE any help or suggestions.  Thanks!
I suggest you read this: An Outlook Express basic repair kitThanks for your response!  Still not a complete fix but it's heading me in the right direction!Better yet, ditch the softwate prostitute Outlook Express that invites all and sundry to romp about in your computer, and instead install >Thunderbird<.  You won't regret it.Thanks!  I've never HEARD of it but then I don't know a thing about computers (I'm just a silly eBayer).  I'm gonna try it now.  I sure HOPE I don't kill my computer.

Solve : Cleaning Up New Computer?

Answer»

I have a new HP Pavilion a 1410n that we got from Circuit City a couples of months ago.  I need to clean it up and get all of the add stuff and other stuff that they put on them that I don't need.  I have uninstalled some of the things like the HP Games but some of the stuff I don't know what it is or how to uninstall it because some stuff does not come up in add/remove programs.  I live in S. OR.  Circuit City wants $95 to clean-up my computer.  If someone can TELL in detel what I need to do or tell me someone that I can take it to in my area that would not cost so much that would be great.
Thanks for any help you can give
C.K.What sort of stuff is it that needs cleaning from your computer?
Programs can normally just be uninstalled through add/remove programs, but you said some of the stuff doesn't show up there, so I'm curious as to what that would be?
I do know how you feel, new computers seem to come with so uch junk these daysDownload CCleaner, install it, and use it's Uninstall feature.  It will often show proprams that do not appear in Windows Add or Remove Programs list.  I also suggust you use all the features in CCleaner, the Windows scan, the Applications scan, and the Issues scan.  I would also contact HP and see about getting a real WIndows CD in case you need to reload in the future(without all of this annoying stuff, of course). It may be the best $20 you ever spent.AOL adds and then there is stuff in the add/remove programs that I have no idea what it is and weather I need it or not.
I really do not know very much about computers.

Programs can normally just be uninstalled through add/remove programs, but you said some of the stuff doesn't show up there, so I'm curious as to what that would be?
I do know how you feel, new computers seem to come with so uch junk these days
Where do I get that from?
Thanks

Download CCleaner, install it, and use it's Uninstall feature.  It will often show proprams that do not appear in Windows Add or Remove Programs list.  I also suggust you use all the features in CCleaner, the Windows scan, the Applications scan, and the Issues scan.
Oaky, Thanks I did not know that I could do that.

I would also contact HP and see about getting a real WIndows CD in case you need to reload in the future(without all of this annoying stuff, of course). It may be the best $20 you ever spent.

No, it won't remove programs unless you tell it to.  Here's the actual website for CCleaner: http://www.ccleaner.com/.  It has more info on what CCleaner does.  It also has a link for a Quick Tour of CCleaner, and I SUGGEST you go through that before you use it.  The reason I did not direct you to their CCleaner site in the first place is that the full download from them includes a Yahoo toolbar, and I was trying to steer you away from that.  The download source I posted in my previous post gives you the slim version; it's the full version of CCleaner without the Yahoo toolbar.

Even you do download the full version, you can elect not to install the Yahoo toolbar.  You'll see that option soon after STARTING the installation. Quote

Solve : Outlook 2003 "Hide when minimized" not working?

Answer»

Running WIndows XP Pro with OFFICE 2003 Pro...

Right clicking on the Outlook 2003 icon in the systray and checking the "Hide when minimized" does not check or work.
Outlook 2003 still SITS on the taskbar.

I TRIED reinstalling Office and even deleting and recreating the profile.

I went to the registry... HKey_current_user\software\microsoft\office\11.0\outlook\preferences and made:
MinToTray   REG_DWORD    0x000000001 and it still isn't working.

Seems like Outlook is not communicating with the registry.

Any thoughts would be most appreciative.

Thanks

Solve : Outlook 2003 Profile Question?

Answer»

I am using Outlook 2003.  I am a contractor inside of BP and I have a BP email address and my company's email address.

Both have been set up in Outlook 2003 in seperate profiles (both are on NETWORKS).

My problem is managing both (ESPECIALLY the calendars).

Any ideas / suggestions?

Thanks
OGDo you now have two separate calendars in Outlook or are you asking how to do that?  Do you want to share calendars with other Outlook USERS on the network?  I don't think I can help you with the latter but another forum member, who is more familiar with using Outlook on an Exchange server, may see your question later today and have some COMMENTS for you.Yes, I have two seperate calendars in Outlook which is the problem as I have to log out and check the other one, before I can confirm a meeting request.  Yes, I want to share calendars if possible.

Solve : MS Office Prof 2000?

Answer»

Recently downloaded trial version of MS Office 2003 and when trial expired, my orig MS Office 2000 Prof will not work properply: Scripting and debug message error when trying to send docs via attachment/email.  I have uninstalled the trial version and my orig version and resintalled orig, MS Office Prof 2000 but nothing helps.  When reciepient opens attachment, there is nothing there; when I send attached docs to myself, I can't open and says " install a language pack in Korean" and says "Runtime error, do you wish to debug, Line 1, syntax error" Well, you obviously created a mess for yourself.  Whatever you downloaded was not an official edition of MS Office 2003; MS Office 2003 simply is not distributed that way.  You have to buy it on CD.

I'll suggest an initial procedure to try to resolve this; it may not work, but I suggest trying it and then, if it does not work, other measures will have to be taken.  Uninstall MS Office 2000 Prof again, download, install, and run CCleaner.  Use all the scans in CCleaner, the Windows scan, the Applications scan, and the Issues scan.  When CCleaner asks whether you want to back up your Registry before removing items found in the Issues scan, reply with Yes and do the backup.  Then, REINSTALL MS Office 2000 Prof and see whether it works.  cCLEANER DID NOT WORK, STILL GETTING SAME ERROR MESSAGES. Quote

I'm back up and running again and most definitely learned a lot through this process.  The only thing my ISP could tell me was to reformat my hard drive and reinstall windows!  So I took off a week from work and spent 7-10 hours a day working on this system because I KNEW there was something that could be done to repair what had happened with this spyware.

I am still of the opinion that a good format and reinstall would better serve you in the long run. The problems just seem to go on and on....To GX1_Man:  You are certainly CORRECT in your ANALYSIS and protocol for a clean install.  But the more that I work with computers, the more I learn and this process certainly does pose quite a CHALLENGE some days.

To Soybean:  I uninstalled MS Office 2000 and ran the ccleaner again...this time, it worked!!!!

Thanks to ALL for their expertise!!

Carry on my wayward son.........Glad to hear problem solved.  KEEP CCleaner installed and use it periodically for disk cleanup and Registry cleaning (the Issues scan).  It's a good maintenance tool to help keep your computer performing at it's best. Quote

Solve : Is Firefox 2.0 a dud??

Answer»

Is Firefox 2.0 a dud? Are users better avoiding it and waiting until a future build? Are too many of the new features buggy and incomplete and is the browser overall more unstable that previous versions? What about Firefox on Vista?
The future for Firefox has to be that it (and Opera) MUST all run in protected mode, but for now Firefox doesn't Having used Firefox 2.0 for a few days I believe that some of these claims are quite justified, while others are highly exaggerated or based on user preferences. But if someone tells you that it's a bad idea to use Firefox on Windows Vista, do yourself a favor and listen to them because they are telling the truth.

Firefox 2.0 has been out for a week and the download counter is already well past 2 million. But a vocal group of Firefox users have generated quite a long list of gripes and grievances regarding this latest release. Some are even saying that upgrading to 2.0 might not be a good idea.
So what's behind all this? Here's a quick short list of the most popular Firefox 2.0 gripes:
[ch61623] Random freezes
[ch61623] Poor antiphishing technology
[ch61623] Confused Options dialog box
[ch61623] Bulky, inconsistent theme
[ch61623] Incompatibility with extensions
[ch61623] Memory leaks
[ch61623] CSS issues
[ch61623] Buggy history bar

I have to admit that I wasn't all that jazzed about Firefox 2.0 when it was released. IE7 had just been released and that was such a huge evolutionary step for Internet Explorer that it almost completely filled my requirements for what a browser should be. However, that didn't stop me downloading Firefox 2.0 and taking a look.
Some of these gripes come down to a matter of taste. Personally, I don't think that the new Firefox theme is all that bad but then I'm not all that fussed about how my browser looks - it's a window onto the Internet, not a piece of art. If people don't like the default shipped theme, there are PLENTY of others to choose from. I can't see how the Mozilla team is going to be able to please everyone all the time. I also don't find the Options dialog box too bad, although it is suffering from the developers trying to cram too much in. Despite this, it remains quite usable. As far as CSS goes, I think the PROBLEM people are seeing are sites built for Internet Explorer that aren't happy being displayed in Firefox.
I've not noticed a problem with the history bar, but it's possible that I've simply not looked closely enough.
However, some of the complaints are very valid indeed. The random freeze issue is apparent to me on two systems (both where Firefox 1.5 had previously been installed and behaved well). Session restore helps to save the day, but that's no excuse. The crashing is such a problem that it's just easier for me to use IE7.
Memory leaks are also present, and actually seem worse under Firefox 2.0 than under 1.x. I was hoping to find these fixed and I'm disappointed to find they aren't.
On a more serious note, complaints that the antiphishing filter is weak seem justified. I've thrown a number of dodgy phishing sites at Firefox 2.0 and its detect rate is appallingly low. Some people claim that any antiphishing filter is better than no antiphishing filter, but I disagree - at best this feature seems to offer users little more than FALSE hope and at worst a false sense of security. By comparison, the antiphishing filter in IE7 seems a lot better and was able to flag as suspicious all the phishing sites I tested it with.
The claim that Firefox 2.0 is incompatible with a lot of popular extensions also seems true, though it has to be remembered that the Mozilla team have nothing to do with most of the extensions out there. They are third-party applications and require the developer to offer support for newer versions. However, extensions are one of Firefox's most compelling features and seeing a whole raft of disabled extensions, especially those that are well-used and loved, is going to put off a lot of existing users from upgrading.
Do I believe that current Firefox users should not upgrade to the latest version? No way. If you stick with 1.5.x then you're going to be at risk from unpatched vulnerabilities. The only way to go is up to 2.0 and keep downloading updates as they become available.
So what's my issue with running Firefox on Windows Vista? It's that it runs in standard user mode and has full access to the system. Internet Explorer 7 on the other hand runs in protected mode. Under this mode, Internet Explorer, along with ActiveX controls and add-ons such as toolbars, have only limited access to the file system and the registry and it's very difficult for a code to leverage a vulnerability and allow takeover of the system. Compare this to a vulnerability in Firefox which would give an attacker full access to the system. The future for Firefox has to be that it (and Opera) must all run in protected mode, but for now Firefox doesn't, and that represents a serious risk to users who use Windows Vista.
I can't help but feel that Firefox is a victim of its own success. The more users they have, the more masters they have to satisfy. More and more Firefox users see it as just another browser and feel that they are owed something. Too many of them don't see the work that goes into the product behind the scenes and instead choose to nitpick and exaggerate each small issue.    :-?honvetops, thanks for your post.  This is the kind of objective, detailed assessment that can be very helpful to anyone wondering whether to upgrade to Firefox 2.0 from a previous version.  I not concerned yet about whether it will work well with Windows Vista because Vista hasn't been released yet and, even if it were, I probably won't be getting it for quite some time after it's official release.

I confess I used IE exlusively until only about a month ago when I downloaded Firefox 1.5.  Since then, I've used Firefox 1.5 a lot and I like it.  I also downloaded IE7 right after it's release and like the improvements in it.  I think I'll hold off for awhile on Firefox 2.0.I have used Firefox 2 since it was released
Personally, I think it is a vast improvement over Firefox 1.5 (not that Firefox 1.5 was at all bad, again just in my opinion), it's much faster and seems to leak less memory
I didn't like the new theme though, so I got a classic theme to make it look like 1.5
The close buttons on all the tabs annoyed me too, I much prefer to just have one close button on the right (again, like 1.5)
However, once I'd sorted these annoyances out I was off
I do think it's a bit cheeky how they seem to have stolen some of the best extensions made for Firefox previosuly and incorporated them into the browser, but I must admit it's useful to have the functionality "out of the box" rather than downloading quite so many extensions
Still, I think it's fantastic, although I do have a thing about IE (I hate it)
Then again, that's just meFirefox 2 works quite well here and I like the changes they added. They weren't necessary at all, since it was a great browser before and it is an even greater browser now, but they're a welcome addition.

The only odd thing I ran into was when I tried to open a word document from the Internet, it just shut down my browser and did nothing at all. Several retries resulted in the same behaviour. However, this wasn't done on my PC and I haven't tried other word documents on the Internet.

What a load of unproven crap, all my extensions worked fine and when I downloaded the browser a day after the release updates were immediatly available. I use popular extensions and less popular extensions. Including, but not limited to, Noscript, Mouse Gestures, DictionarySearch, Tab preferences and Flashblock.

The theme is fine, it's a bit more flashy than it used to be, but not much has changed. Besides, who the *censored* gives a *censored* about the theme anyway? Only hippies do. And you are sounding like one to me right now! The theme has had some minor changes, nothing big. It still functions the same it just looks different. Big deal. Does that make it a bad browser? Shallow thinking.

I had a random freeze or two, but it resolved it self real soon and I'm still not sure whether that was due to Firefox or due to my Windows XP installation having screwed up all my TCP/IP settings for no obvious reason.

I also like session restore, even when you keep the browser open and restart the PC it gently puts back everything. Tabbed history is BRILLIANT and I was looking for such a feature.

Anyhow, all in all, I've had some random freezes, but like I said, don't know whether this was due to Windows screwing up as I was experimenting with my router/modem and I noticed that it just shut down when I tried to open a word document on a PC, however, that could also be Windows screwing up as that PC is never in use by me.

So, anymore IE fan boys that need proving wrong or are we all going to become real masculine in the next few seconds?

By the way, the added spell-checker is another excellent innovative feature.. Quote

Perhaps stealing wasn't the right word, what I meant was that the extensions have been incorporated
I didn't mean to give the impression I thought it was bad or wrong, only that FF2 now has several useful features that were previously only available via extensions
Re-reading my post, I agree it doesn't really say what I wanted it to say, sorry
Hopefully this clarifies my meaning a bitCalum, my child, you have seen the light.  You are spared ten years in purgatory. You i have to say, i do prefer the one i had before 2.0. I also find that wit the 2.0 version it has to end it self alot, it comes acorss 'errors' and has to be shut down.
Also can i ask what a memory leak is, i never have asked but its something i see a fair bit.
Thanks

ChrisMemory leak is typically used to indicate that a process is gobbling up memory indiscriminately.  Firefox does sometimes seem to go through RAM like there's no tomorrow.Elephants.OK, I've got a lot of extensions. Let's see how many make it across. Will edit this post in a minute... \

EDIT:

The following extensions were not compatible (with the versions I had):

Modern Pinball (Theme)
SpiderZilla
Smiley Xtra
ImageBot
HTML Validator
Page Title Eraser
CSS Validator

The following could be updated for 2.0: All of them, though I had to manually reinstall my theme. I know what Raptor said about themes, but I like my theme. Ahhhh ok, thanks for that Rob.

Not true. Well I guess it's true that the term is used to indicate that, but not quite what the term should mean.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memory_leak

Programs request memory from the system to store their junk, then they have to release the memory once it has finished using it (not necessarily only at program end). A memory leak occurs when the program "forgets" to release memory when it is no longer needed. (pun - sorry couldn't resist). The Wikipedia article shows a good simpe example of a memory leak.

Here's a simple, bit more relevent example I made up. (OK disclaimer, I'm not  a browser programmer so don't complain if this isn't right - it's for example purposes only!)

You tell your browser to view a webpage. The browser requests enough memory from the operating system to display the page. Now you click a link for a new page. But the browser was poorly programmed and does not free up the memory already used by the old page, but forgets it is there. So basically the old webpage is stilled loaded in your memory, but it can no longer be used! The program has lost its references to it, so it can no longer access it anymore, and the operating system cannot reallocate the memory to another program or indeed the browser because it is still marked as in use. If you were to close the browser, assuming that was the only program running, your available memory would be less afterwards than before. On the other hand, the amount of free memory you had before running a program should be the exact same after closing down the program. (Of course this seldom happens on modern computers because of all the junk running in the background).

If you continue looking through websites, the amount of claimed but no longer usable memory will increase. If you go back to a previously visited website, then the browser will simple store again that website in memory again! If you frequent that page regularly, you'll basically end up with lots of clones in your memory. Eventually the computer will run out of memory and crash. Boom.

The important concept is to realise memory inefficiency is not the same as memory leaks. I could, for example, make a program that requests 1024MB of memory from the computer, and doesn't do anything with it. As long as my program keeps track of the memory, and frees it after the program has ended for reusage by the system, then this is not considered a memory leak. It's considered a stupid waste of memory, but not a leak!

When people hear memory leak, they often think "that program uses up too much memory", or to reword it more technically, they could think "that program requests too much memory from the system". In reality the oppersite is true! The correct thing to think is in fact: "that program does not free all of its memory back to the system after usage." So memory leaks are to do with memory freeing, not requesting

Whether or not Firefox 2 has memory leaks I have no idea. But the point is simply using a lot of memory inefficiently is not in itself a memory leak. Bad programming, but not memory leak As long as Firefox 2 frees up all of its requested memory after it has finished with it, then it lives in Leak-Free-Ville. (Not to be confused with Leek-Free-Ville).

Phew. My wrists deserve a rest.

PS. Elephants. Quote

Solve : Word help please?

Answer»

Hi all,

I am hoping that someone here can assist or POINT me to an online RESOURCE that can assist with what I am looking to create.

I am looking at creating a word document where when opened a macro will run asking a number of questions and tick boxes. Based on these tick boxes word will then call in other associated word documents to create a tender document. ie

The macro will ask for information such as: Company name, contact details etc it will than have tick boxes asking if the client wants product A, product B etc. Based on these question the macro will then call in the other relevant word documents and populate with the company name etc to create the final document.

I hope this makes SENSE. If someone can point me to a resource that may assist me I'd be greateful.

Thanks in advance.Take a look at this: Positioning the Cursor in a New Document.  It talks about making a specific macro automatically run when Word is opened, but I'm sure the technique described there would apply to any Word macro.  The key is to name it AutoNew....and to rename the file .wiz

Quote

...and to rename the file .wiz

:-?  You're joking, right?
Nope.  .wiz is the extension MS uses for Word Wizard documents.  It ensures the CORRECT associations for that KIND of template file.

Just a question what do yall think is better?

INTERNET Explorer v 7

I have both at the moment and am gonna delete ONE but i dont know which one!

and another question please read.!!!!!!!!!!!!!   On ie v7 the internet bar where you type things in keeps disapearing and i have to move my mouse to the top for it to come back! is there any way i can change this?

please help! You cannot (and should not) delete Internet Explorer. You might possibly be able to REVERT back to an earlier version, but not remove it completely. Well OK some tools can but it is not recommended. For example, some websites can only be used correctly in IE. What would you do then?

Is there any particular reason why you cannot have both installed on your computer?cool ill keep them both!

but why is this?

On ie v7 the internet bar where you type things in keeps disapearing and i have to move my mouse to the top for it to come back! is there any way i can change this? Ditch IE7 by only using it for Windows Updates (Basically, IE is just an update service for Windows with way too many options).

Firefox rules.Do you have IE7 Beta perhaps ? ?
Or the newest release that isn't supposed to be SCREWED up ? ?i fixed it hopefully! That's not an answer... Quote

You can download an extension for Firefox that allows pages to be viewed in an IE tab under Firefox.True, and that is akin to putting Mother Theresa in bed with Adolf HITLER.  Very poor taste, I've always thought.

Solve : DVD-Writer problem?

Answer»

Hey everyone. I'm new to the board, and I have this annoying problem with my DVD-R. I had the same problem with my old CD-R's and I never knew what caused it.

Here's the thing, the writer works just fine until all of a sudden it starts working slower, the data rate while reading drops drastically, the buffer while WRITING keeps going up and down throughout the burning process...which TAKES an INSANELY long AMOUNT of time btw, and it keeps doing that until I format Windows.

Now I know this isn't a hardware problem because when I format and reinstall Windows, everything's fine and dandy, that means it has to be something on my PC. Some new virus maybe that my AV couldn't detect? But then what explains the fact that this used to happen to me all the time before?

Anybody got a SOLUTION for this? DOUBLE POST

Really, only 1 is necessary and more makes it confusing. Thanks.

Solve : Printing schedule/Trackin tabs in Outlook?

I would like to print the Schedule and TRACKING tabs in MS outlook Calendar 2003.
However, when i try to print whilst one of these tabs is on screen it just prints out the DETAILS of the MEETING.
Is there anyway i can print this information out without having to do a SCREENSHOT, as i do invite a fair few people to the meetings i set-up so it's not always very practical (if ever) to screen shot as it's sometimes longer than one page.
And ideas let me know.

Thanks.

GWeird question, weird.  Why would you want to print the Tracking panel?  Is that supposed to PROVIDE relevant info to your meeting attendees?  The Outlook report you're complaining provides the info they would need.  What's the point of giving them the actual Tracking panel?

Solve : RUNDLL ??????

Answer»

I ran SPYBOT - Search & Destroy the other day and it removed unwanted stuff. (I run it often, this not being the first time).

But since this last time when I boot my LAPTOP this appears when I log into Windows:

What can I do to fix this??

PLEASE helpeasy way: start/run/msconfig/startup tab. Uncheck anything related to myweb. Reboot
Best way: CLEAN the registry of all references to myweb. Search the HD for anything myweb and delete. Reboot.Thnks. I took the second option. WELL the first one I couldn't find it in startup....

So I cleared the registry and that fixed the problem.

Thanks

Solve : Outlook Help :(?

Answer»

I'm just starting work on Outlook, and have been thrown in at the deep end.

I need to create a new form. For appointments, But incorporating an Excel table, Which has formulas in it. All on the first page, i've been looking for a while, and can't work out how.

Any help WOULD be greatly appreciated.Do you have any REFERENCE which says this can be done?  I found this: Tutorial: Creating and distributing custom forms with Outlook, and it says nothing about Excel.  I'm skeptical that you can use Excel in creating a form in Outlook.

Why were you wanting to use Excel?  What would the formulas do?I'm not sure about Excel either,

I'm wanting the formulas to calculate VAT automatyically. Which I can do with Forms, But then the printing order GOES wierd.

Perhaps there is a way to CHANGE the way things show up on the Printed Sheet? At the moment it comes up:

Mobile Number,
Price
Name
VAT Price
Total Price
etc

As you can see, not the right order :/I really haven't designed forms in Outlook but have been looking at it since reading your POST.  I'm now more convinced that you can not import something from Excel.  Concerning that problem with the print order, I just haven't worked with Outlook forms enough to know the answer.

If I can find some time to look at it more today, I'll post back again.  If you figure out how to make it work, please let us know.Thank you, I will post any updates, Lets hope it can be resolved. Thanks again :]

Solve : AOL files?

Answer»

I am running Windows XP and use AOL 8.0.  I have used 75% of my C Drive and am looking for things to delete to free up some space.  Also, when I defrag, it seems I have about 2500 fragments from an AOL/Oraganize folder.  When I use Windows Explorer, I SEE there is a Cache folder in the Organize folder with about 250 files.  They all have the same name as my AOL user name along with some numbers.  I don't know what these files are for and would like to delete them.  Is this a good idea? Before you start deleting AOL files you may want to check with AOL. I would recommend just deleting these.

You might want to download and run CCleaner (free at www.ccleaner.com) to get some junk out, but specific program files are another story. Quote

GX1_Man, did you intend to say, "I would not recommend just deleting these."?
Google, download & install CrapCleaner.Yes, I meanat to type NOT, but I was having a wangming moment.  The AOL cache files that he is talking about, does anyone know how to deceipher and read these files?

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

tcarThanks for the input.  I did find an AOL fix at AOL one-click fixes that removed the content of the Cache.  I still am trying to figure out if it is OK to delete another file in the Organize folder.  The name of the file is my screen name and it is 167MB.  Seems rather large.  In properties under type of file it just says "file."  I don't know what that means but it would be NICE to delete such a large file if it isn't needed.  I think there are 2393 fragments in that file, too, after I run defrag.

I did download and run Crap Cleaner and deleted 347MB of junk.  Imazing how much dust accumulates after a few years.  Your best bet would be to dump AOL and all it's garbage...but i'm sure you've heard that before.

Solve : media player is auto starting?

Answer»

hi,
i have genuine windows XP home sp2, media player 9, on a desktop with logitech ACCESS keyboard.
if i press any key on right side of keyboard media player launches. i have disabled media player using the control panel but it still launches. my only recent change was IE7 install. system restore has not solved probem and i am now back with IE6. VIRUS check TODAY reported no virus found.

as i am typing using on screen keyboard and mouse any ideas gratefully received.

the fool.I suspect the real problem here is your keyboard, not WMP.  You might try uninstalling the Logitech software and driver associated with your keyboard and then reinstall it.

Another troubleshooting step would be to try another keyboard.  Do you have an old standard keyboard LYING around?  Try it.

If the problem is, indeed, a keyboard issue, then you did not need to uninstall IE7 and I suggest you reinstall it.  Or, get the Firefox browser and use it.  Either way, I would not continue with IE6.  Did you install Logitech software for it?Thanks, soybean and Raptor. Raptor got it right. I installed a new hard drive in the summer but didn't install the Logitech software. Done it now and everything is fine. Point taken - when all else fails try the supplied software!

I will reinstall IE7 now soybean.

Thanks again,

Solve : MS Paint has lost its Help File?

Answer»

I was using MS Paint today and attempted to access the Help Topics file and could not.

I would click on the option in the Help menu, see the HOUR glass for a couple seconds then it would disappear and no help file would appear.
All the other features appeared to work fine.

I have a fairly new computer so don't remember WHETHER or not I have successfully used the help file in Paint before today. I can access it on my old computer with no problem.

Restarting did not help.  I have XP Professional.  Not sure what other info would be helpful.

Should I try to reload the program SOMEHOW?

Any help would be appreciated.  Thank you.Go to Start / Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter...

Have that shiny MS CD READY as it will ask for it.

Be patient let it run til it's finished

Re-boot and you should be good to goThank you, patio for your suggestion.

I did type in type in sfc /scannow and let it run.  Took awhile and never asked for my CD.

Unfortunately, it also didn't seem to make any difference.

What I ended up doing is uninstalling Paint and reinstalling it in the control panel and it's all there now.

I'll think about that first next time.

Anyway, I do appreciate your assistance. No problem and Welcome Aboard...

Glad to hear you got it SOLVED.

Solve : cant burn cds please help?

Answer»

I cant burn cds; I've tried many programs, and there seems to be no answer. I'm sure someonet knows something to try. Please please help, it's extremely frustrating.hi hbeelner,

could you please state the programs you have tried?

i am familiar with windows media player 10, i will give you a walkthru on how to burn a CD using that.

1. open songs you would like to burn in windows media player 10 (WMP10)
2. on the right hand side of WMP10 you should see the "now playing list". if not, enable it by clicking the < icon just below the butterfly.
3. click the song on the top of the list, then scroll down to the bottom of the list and hit shift + left mouse button. the entire list should now be highlited.
4. right click on the now highlited list and select "add to" then "burn list".
5. select the "burn" tab on the top of WMP10. the songs you SELECTED should now be under "burn list".
6. on the right hand side of WMP10 you will see a drop down menu bar. (above where it says insert a blank cd into the drive".) select whatever drive your cd burner is on.
7. insert a blank cd
8. click the "start burn" icon above the burn list
9. your done!!!!

P.S. make sure you are using a CD-R or a CD-RW.
P.S.S. if you are using a CD-R, make sure it is brand new, once a CD-R has been copied to, nothing more can be copied to it. it "locks" itself.
thank you, however I know how to burn cds. My problem is that my computer wont complete burning them. I have already wasted about 50 cds also many brands, so I know thats not the problem. I have also tried lowering the speed, however it did not do anything. Do  you know a bigger problem that could be affecting this?
what are you trying to burn? audio, video, or games?

^this is an important question. If you have tried many different media brands and several different programs, deductive reasoning suggests that the issue is with the burner/interface itself.

Download Nero InfoTool. It will tell you the exact model, firmware version, supported read/write features and MODES of your drive among other things.
It will also tell you if ASPI is installed and working properly. You should also check the manufacturer's website for firmware updates.Sorry Homer, I didin't see you had asked that in the first reply. I
am trying to burn audio.  JPH, thank you for the program, however I dont know what to do even though I have these answers. The ASPI is not installed. Could you tell me how to install this if this is important?
Thank you.Can you please post the exact model of your burner and firmware version?hmmm audio cd's not wanting to burn. have you EVER been able to burn cd's? from the sounds of it, it might possibly be a defective burner. Quote

Can you please post the exact model of your burner and firmware version?

We still need this...What do you hope to FIND out by knowing the firmware version?  :-?I was looking for the model # ...i'm still not convinced he has a burner. Is it possible to try to burn a CD with a normal CD-ROM drive and then end up no longer being able to use them?

Solve : Microsoft Outlook annoying language problem?

Answer»

Hi All,
When using outlook or word I find that when I am sending an email or document that was created by a user who is using a US-English language setting it will open in that setting on my PC despite the fact I have Australian-English set as default. This is ESPECIALLY annoying with email as I go to bash out a quick reply to someone and the AUTO correct is knocking words I've spelt correctly back to the US version of the spelling.

Do I have to grin and bare this or is there a setting I can use to change it.

Thanks

MichaelOne other thing: I find a button "attach as Adobe PDF" keeps showing up in my outlook menu bar regardless of how many times I remove it from the customizable menu setting.

Any ideas appreciated.

Thanksah a further thing that might help anyone with an answer:

I notice that the changing language problem occurs even when I have sent a message (i.e. using Australian English), other person replies, when I reply to that message the language setting is always US - English. Only time I hit reply to a message and it comes up Australian English is when I reply to a text format email?

wierd and annoyingWhat OS  ? ?
Have you in fact installed any Language packs on this build ? ?
Windows XP Pro fresh install done recently and I SPECIFICALLY installed only the Australian language throughout XP install language options (deleted default US English languange option during install) specifically to avoid this problem.

However problem remains as it has on any install I've ever done of XP.

Thanks for your interest, hope to find a solution to this one.Have you checked the MS Knowledge Base site to see if others are seeing the same issues as you are ? ?I wouldn't know where to start or what I was looking for. It seems a somewhat OBSCURE problem. I have put a post on an official microsoft site, seemed to be a user help forum. No joy as yet. If you think knowledge base is the way to go please advise the best way to approach it.

Solve : itunes and ipod update problems?

Answer»

There's a new software version available for my ipod but when I CLICK to UPDATE it says:

It cannot be updated because the firmware file COULD not be found.

I UNINSTALLED the ipod and itunes and reinstalled but it still doesn't work. I try the restore but that gives me the same problem.

Can anyone help?

I tried the Apple site but I can't seem to find help.

I don't own an iPod but i believe any firmware file would exist on the unit itself...did you have it connected when you RAN the software ? ?

patio.  8-)Yes, it prompts me to connect the ipod when I install the softwareSounds like it is trying to do a version check on your IPod's software (firmware), but can't find the file that contains version info.  That would be an issue with the player itself, not ITunes.  I would find out what kind of warrenties are in place for your hardware (either through the place you bought it or from Apple) and discuss with them the possible causes and fixes for your issue.  It is most likely that your issue is something they have seen before and can either fix or replace, depending on the status of any warrenties.

Solve : MSN Messenger forever signs on?

Answer»

Ok, so now my MSN has started to act up.

What will happen is that i'll try to sign in and it will go forever without actually signing on. I can log on on someone elses computer, and infact i can even log on on another SIDE of my computer, just not on my side of it. Yes of course i've uninstalled and installed it back on a few times but that does nothing. The thing is though that you know how with the new msn how when you log on once it remembers your colour scheme and display pic and shows it to you as you log on? I still get that even after i've uninstalled it and installed it back on which means that somewhere it must be hiding a file which could be the problem. Just one other thing that i'll mention is how if i'm signed in on another side of the computer and then try to sign in on my side it will log me off as if it has logged me on, but it hasn't of course. I've asked other ppl and they say they don't see me logged on at those points either so it's not just that it's not DISPLAYING it to me.

Anyone have any idea how to fix this?

EDIT: oh and one other thing i should mention. I thought that it might be being blocked so i put msn on my trusted sites and it put a * beside it, i don't know if that means something ELSE is blocking it or what, but it's the only one on my trusted sites that has that. When you uninstall use a cleaning program to clean traces left behind, including your user data
Try http://www.ccleaner.com and clean the registry with it after you uninstall, removing all MSN Messenger related items
Also, delete the MSN Messenger folders in your user data and program files folders
Then install it again and see if it works
Hope this helpsOk, so i ran ccleaner after i'd uninstalled, and deleted the file from program files (which i had actually been doing already), but still didn't work. And still it remembered who i was which still isn't making any sense.Try deleting this FOLDER - C:\Documents and Settings\(user name)\Application Data\Microsoft\MSN Messenger
I think this will clear everything, including custom emoticons etc
Hope this helpswell this time i managed to get it to forget me, but it still didn't sign me in...What version are you using?I'm using windows live, I would change versions, but that seems to be the new standard now when downloadingDoes it freeze or simply try to log on without success? It doesn't freeze, it will just keep on signing in without ever actually getting onAre you routing it through your firewall?if you mean do i have a firewall installed then yes, it should be allowing it through seeing as i checked that though. I have a bunch of programs that could be blocking it though even though i've tried shutting them down and allowing msn through on themAnd did that have any success?shutting them down? no, it still just tries to sign in with no success.Did you use the registry cleaner on CrapCleaner as well after uninstalling?

I'd try to run the program from safe MODE with Network Support, see if you can log in (If MSN Live works under safe mode, that is), restart, and then use 'normal' Windows to see if it functions again.. Bit far fetched, but perhaps you get lucky.

Solve : Access - possible to automate converted macro??

Answer»

Microsoft Access - with a macro named as "autoexec" we can automatically save a report in the pc.

Per the Access's menu - have converted the macro to visual basic.

Have tried to automate the converted macro so as to automatically save a report but not successful. Is it possible?, If possible wonder whats are the steps?

Thanks.

I think your message is confusing, but maybe that's because I haven't used macros in Access.  I believe all Office macros are recorded in a Visual Basic file.  So, what do you mean by "converted the macro to visual basic"?

In your first sentence, you said, "we can automatically save a report in the pc."   But, then you did this "conversion" and then you could not automatically save a report in the pc.  Sure seems LIKE a contradiction.  And, based on what you've said, why do the "conversion" if it causes the "automatically save a report in the pc" to not work?Don't know how Access savvy you are but it is kind of strange to do what I am understanding you to do in the AutoExec.  Generally, the AutoExec is used to RUN code to initialize the database, set security, connect to an SQL box and/or then open the main form of the database.

What it SOUNDS like what you want to do is automate the generation of a certain report that, I'm guessing, takes a LONG time to run.  What I generally do is do this through the Windows Task SCHEDULER.  You have it open the database and execute what you want it to do at a time when LAN/WAN resources are the least taxed.

I would start there if I were you.

Solve : itunes "dominating" the desktop.?

Answer»

other than the issue that itunes uses more ram than anything else on my system, i have two issues with the programs lust for dominating your desktop.

1. Whenever i'm uploading files to my IPOD, I generally minimize the itunes window so I can do other things. How do you stop it from RETURNING automatically every 2 minutes? I've tried the taskbar icon option and that doesn't cure it.

2. Whenever a dialog box comes up and tells you what the program is doing/gives you the option to cancel it, it goes through 30 second cycles where itunes will automatically move "On top" of other applications (therefore if you were typing something on a website/msn etc at the same time and hit the "enter" KEY, then the OPERATION on itunes gets cancelled, and you have to start again). Again, how do you prevent this?nobody?

(i guess there isn't an answer; this software is so useless.)

I also found an easy way to delete all my music from my ipod; just CONNECT it to my PC and start itunes; it automatically starts deleting them files. :| Quote

(i guess there isn't an answer; this software is so useless.)

I didn't want to say it.  haha. Well as soon as ml_ipod supports video, photos and podcasts, then i'm off back to the smart side of the road.
