Solve : Trouble Running PSP7? |
Answer» I'm having a bit of trouble running Paint Shop Pro 7 on my profile, even it works just fine on someone else's. I HONESTLY have no clue what the problem is. Blasphemy..... You havent provided a lot of info ....however , try creating a new user account for yourself and see if you can utilize PSP7 on your new user account . I'm sorry. I really don't know what information to provide. I created a new account, and it runs fine. It runs on every account on the computer, except for one (the one I'm on now.) Blasphemy... ok ...thats good. Do you have access to everything in your problematic (old)user account .....in the new user account you have created. If the answer is yes .....then simply delete the old user account and use the new one you have created . dl65 Yes, I have access to everything. And I thank you very much for your assistance. However, (and I don't mean to question you) this seems like an awful lot to go through just because one program isn't running. Is this the only way to resolve the problem? Should I provide you with more information?LOl ...there's nothing wrong with asking questions......... It's just that in your situation , it's probably much quicker to create a new user account as you have done as opposed to LOOKING for the actual cause of the issue. dl65 I'd prefer to find/know the actual cause, though... In case something like this HAPPENS again. That way I can fix it myself. It feels like I'm just buying a new bike instead of fixing a couple of loose bolts. But I don't know how to find the cause, or where to begin in terms of fixing it. |

Solve : Cleaning Up New Computer? |
Answer» I have a new HP Pavilion a 1410n that we got from Circuit City a couples of months ago. I need to clean it up and get all of the add stuff and other stuff that they put on them that I don't need. I have uninstalled some of the things like the HP Games but some of the stuff I don't know what it is or how to uninstall it because some stuff does not come up in add/remove programs. I live in S. OR. Circuit City wants $95 to clean-up my computer. If someone can TELL in detel what I need to do or tell me someone that I can take it to in my area that would not cost so much that would be great. What sort of stuff is it that needs cleaning from your computer?Where do I get that from? Thanks Quote Download CCleaner, install it, and use it's Uninstall feature. It will often show proprams that do not appear in Windows Add or Remove Programs list. I also suggust you use all the features in CCleaner, the Windows scan, the Applications scan, and the Issues scan.Oaky, Thanks I did not know that I could do that. Quote I would also contact HP and see about getting a real WIndows CD in case you need to reload in the future(without all of this annoying stuff, of course). It may be the best $20 you ever spent.Quote Where do I get that from?Apprarently, you did not notice that CCleaner was a hyperlink in my post. Just click on it. It will take you to a download source. Oh, thanks I did not notice that when I was reading it sorry. Thanks again Quote QuoteI do not know a lot about computers. So I have another ? This Cleaner PROGRAM says that it removesunused programs. So with this being a new computer and we have not used the Mircrosoft Office that is on it will it delet that and other programs like it that has not been used yet, or ones that do not get used very often.Where do I get that from?Apprarently, you did not notice that CCleaner was a hyperlink in my post. Just click on it. It will take you to a download source. Sorry to be a bother and thanks for the help. Quote QuoteNo, it won't remove programs unless you tell it to. Here's the actual website for CCleaner: http://www.ccleaner.com/. It has more info on what CCleaner does. It also has a link for a Quick Tour of CCleaner, and I SUGGEST you go through that before you use it. The reason I did not direct you to their CCleaner site in the first place is that the full download from them includes a Yahoo toolbar, and I was trying to steer you away from that. The download source I posted in my previous post gives you the slim version; it's the full version of CCleaner without the Yahoo toolbar.Where do I get that from?Apprarently, you did not notice that CCleaner was a hyperlink in my post. Just click on it. It will take you to a download source. Even you do download the full version, you can elect not to install the Yahoo toolbar. You'll see that option soon after STARTING the installation. Quote I would also contact HP and see about getting a real WIndows CD in case you need to reload in the future(without all of this annoying stuff, of course). It may be the best $20 you ever spent. I'd do this and then format and a clean install.... |

Solve : MS Office Prof 2000? |
Answer» Recently downloaded trial version of MS Office 2003 and when trial expired, my orig MS Office 2000 Prof will not work properply: Scripting and debug message error when trying to send docs via attachment/email. I have uninstalled the trial version and my orig version and resintalled orig, MS Office Prof 2000 but nothing helps. When reciepient opens attachment, there is nothing there; when I send attached docs to myself, I can't open and says " install a language pack in Korean" and says "Runtime error, do you wish to debug, Line 1, syntax error" Well, you obviously created a mess for yourself. Whatever you downloaded was not an official edition of MS Office 2003; MS Office 2003 simply is not distributed that way. You have to buy it on CD. I'm back up and running again and most definitely learned a lot through this process. The only thing my ISP could tell me was to reformat my hard drive and reinstall windows! So I took off a week from work and spent 7-10 hours a day working on this system because I KNEW there was something that could be done to repair what had happened with this spyware. I am still of the opinion that a good format and reinstall would better serve you in the long run. The problems just seem to go on and on....To GX1_Man: You are certainly CORRECT in your ANALYSIS and protocol for a clean install. But the more that I work with computers, the more I learn and this process certainly does pose quite a CHALLENGE some days. To Soybean: I uninstalled MS Office 2000 and ran the ccleaner again...this time, it worked!!!! Thanks to ALL for their expertise!! Carry on my wayward son.........Glad to hear problem solved. KEEP CCleaner installed and use it periodically for disk cleanup and Registry cleaning (the Issues scan). It's a good maintenance tool to help keep your computer performing at it's best. Quote Carry on my wayward son......... There'll be peace when you are done... |

Solve : Is Firefox 2.0 a dud?? |
Answer» Is Firefox 2.0 a dud? Are users better avoiding it and waiting until a future build? Are too many of the new features buggy and incomplete and is the browser overall more unstable that previous versions? What about Firefox on Vista? IE7 had just been released and that was such a huge evolutionary step for Internet Uhm, since when is lagging behind an 'evolutionary' step? Everything featured in IE 7 was allready featured in many other browsers way before.. How do you all know it leaks memory? What the *censored*? Is everyone suddenly a programmer? Just what the *censored* is a memory leak and can you describe to me how Firefox 'leaks' memory? Quote I can't help but feel that Firefox is a victim of its own success. The more users they have, the more masters they have to satisfy. More and more Firefox users see it as just another browser and feel that they are owed something. Too many of them don't see the work that goes into the product behind the scenes and instead choose to nitpick and It's just a friggin' upgrade, they added some features and removed some people didn't need. It's not a whole new browser.. Quote I do think it's a bit cheeky how they seem to have stolen some of the best extensions made for Firefox previosuly and incorporated them into the browser, but I must admit it's useful to have the functionality "out of the box" rather than downloading quite so many extensions How can you 'steal' open source SOFTWARE? The authors of all those extensions would probably love to see their extensions incorporated, that tells 'm they had good ideas and I am very certain that is why they made those extensions. Quote The claim that Firefox 2.0 is incompatible with a lot of popular extensions also seems true, though it has to be remembered that the Mozilla team have nothing to do with most of the extensions out there. They are third-party applications and require the developer to offer support for newer versions. However, extensions are one of Firefox's most compelling features and seeing a whole raft of disabled extensions, especially those that are well-used and loved, is going to put off a lot of existing users from upgrading. What a load of unproven crap, all my extensions worked fine and when I downloaded the browser a day after the release updates were immediatly available. I use popular extensions and less popular extensions. Including, but not limited to, Noscript, Mouse Gestures, DictionarySearch, Tab preferences and Flashblock. The theme is fine, it's a bit more flashy than it used to be, but not much has changed. Besides, who the *censored* gives a *censored* about the theme anyway? Only hippies do. And you are sounding like one to me right now! The theme has had some minor changes, nothing big. It still functions the same it just looks different. Big deal. Does that make it a bad browser? Shallow thinking. Quote However, some of the complaints are very valid indeed. The random freeze issue is apparent to me on two systems (both where Firefox 1.5 had previously been installed and behaved well). Session restore helps to save the day, but that's no excuse. The crashing is such a problem that it's just easier for me to use IE7. I had a random freeze or two, but it resolved it self real soon and I'm still not sure whether that was due to Firefox or due to my Windows XP installation having screwed up all my TCP/IP settings for no obvious reason. I also like session restore, even when you keep the browser open and restart the PC it gently puts back everything. Tabbed history is BRILLIANT and I was looking for such a feature. Anyhow, all in all, I've had some random freezes, but like I said, don't know whether this was due to Windows screwing up as I was experimenting with my router/modem and I noticed that it just shut down when I tried to open a word document on a PC, however, that could also be Windows screwing up as that PC is never in use by me. So, anymore IE fan boys that need proving wrong or are we all going to become real masculine in the next few seconds? By the way, the added spell-checker is another excellent innovative feature.. Quote How can you 'steal' open source software? The authors of all those extensions would probably love to see their extensions incorporated, that tells 'm they had good ideas and I am very certain that is why they made those extensions.Perhaps stealing wasn't the right word, what I meant was that the extensions have been incorporated I didn't mean to give the impression I thought it was bad or wrong, only that FF2 now has several useful features that were previously only available via extensions Re-reading my post, I agree it doesn't really say what I wanted it to say, sorry Hopefully this clarifies my meaning a bitCalum, my child, you have seen the light. You are spared ten years in purgatory. You i have to say, i do prefer the one i had before 2.0. I also find that wit the 2.0 version it has to end it self alot, it comes acorss 'errors' and has to be shut down. Also can i ask what a memory leak is, i never have asked but its something i see a fair bit. Thanks ChrisMemory leak is typically used to indicate that a process is gobbling up memory indiscriminately. Firefox does sometimes seem to go through RAM like there's no tomorrow.Elephants.OK, I've got a lot of extensions. Let's see how many make it across. Will edit this post in a minute... \ EDIT: The following extensions were not compatible (with the versions I had): Modern Pinball (Theme) SpiderZilla Smiley Xtra ImageBot HTML Validator Page Title Eraser CSS Validator The following could be updated for 2.0: All of them, though I had to manually reinstall my theme. I know what Raptor said about themes, but I like my theme. Ahhhh ok, thanks for that Rob. Chris Quote Memory leak is typically used to indicate that a process is gobbling up memory indiscriminately. Firefox does sometimes seem to go through RAM like there's no tomorrow. Not true. Well I guess it's true that the term is used to indicate that, but not quite what the term should mean. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memory_leak Programs request memory from the system to store their junk, then they have to release the memory once it has finished using it (not necessarily only at program end). A memory leak occurs when the program "forgets" to release memory when it is no longer needed. (pun - sorry couldn't resist). The Wikipedia article shows a good simpe example of a memory leak. Here's a simple, bit more relevent example I made up. (OK disclaimer, I'm not a browser programmer so don't complain if this isn't right - it's for example purposes only!) You tell your browser to view a webpage. The browser requests enough memory from the operating system to display the page. Now you click a link for a new page. But the browser was poorly programmed and does not free up the memory already used by the old page, but forgets it is there. So basically the old webpage is stilled loaded in your memory, but it can no longer be used! The program has lost its references to it, so it can no longer access it anymore, and the operating system cannot reallocate the memory to another program or indeed the browser because it is still marked as in use. If you were to close the browser, assuming that was the only program running, your available memory would be less afterwards than before. On the other hand, the amount of free memory you had before running a program should be the exact same after closing down the program. (Of course this seldom happens on modern computers because of all the junk running in the background). If you continue looking through websites, the amount of claimed but no longer usable memory will increase. If you go back to a previously visited website, then the browser will simple store again that website in memory again! If you frequent that page regularly, you'll basically end up with lots of clones in your memory. Eventually the computer will run out of memory and crash. Boom. The important concept is to realise memory inefficiency is not the same as memory leaks. I could, for example, make a program that requests 1024MB of memory from the computer, and doesn't do anything with it. As long as my program keeps track of the memory, and frees it after the program has ended for reusage by the system, then this is not considered a memory leak. It's considered a stupid waste of memory, but not a leak! When people hear memory leak, they often think "that program uses up too much memory", or to reword it more technically, they could think "that program requests too much memory from the system". In reality the oppersite is true! The correct thing to think is in fact: "that program does not free all of its memory back to the system after usage." So memory leaks are to do with memory freeing, not requesting Whether or not Firefox 2 has memory leaks I have no idea. But the point is simply using a lot of memory inefficiently is not in itself a memory leak. Bad programming, but not memory leak As long as Firefox 2 frees up all of its requested memory after it has finished with it, then it lives in Leak-Free-Ville. (Not to be confused with Leek-Free-Ville). Phew. My wrists deserve a rest. PS. Elephants. Quote QuoteBite me, whippersnapper.Memory leak is typically used to indicate that a process is gobbling up memory indiscriminately. Firefox does sometimes seem to go through RAM like there's no tomorrow. I tend to choose my words quite carefully. Quote QuoteMemory leak is typically used to indicate that a process is gobbling up memory indiscriminately. Firefox does sometimes seem to go through RAM like there's no tomorrow. Did you somehow think that "gobbling up memory indiscriminately" was intended to be a precise technical definition? That said, I still fail to see which part of my statement is "not true"... But, whatever... |

Solve : Firefox vs Internet Explorer? |
Answer» Just a question what do yall think is better? cool ill keep them both! Are you talking about the box for the web address, the search box, or something else? Quote You cannot (and should not) delete Internet Explorer. You might possibly be able to revert back to an earlier version, but not remove it completely. Well OK some tools can but it is not recommended. For example, some websites can only be used correctly in IE. What would you do then? You can download an extension for Firefox that allows pages to be viewed in an IE tab under Firefox.True, and that is akin to putting Mother Theresa in bed with Adolf HITLER. Very poor taste, I've always thought. |

Solve : Burning folders in Outlook to CD? |
Answer» Can anyone tell me how to back up saved email messages to a CD? I have folders for past months i.e. September 2006 and September 2006 Sent, etc., and I want to save these folders to CD due to sensitive information that needs to be backed up for future reference. Any assistance will be GREATLY appreciated.File, Import and Export, Export to a file, select the type of file (I suggest .pst), click Next, select the folder(s) and decide whether to check the box for "Include subfolders", and proceed. On the next screen, you can save to the default location or click on the Browse button and change to location. You might TRY saving DIRECTLY to CD and see whether Windows will let you do that. If not, then save to your hard drive and then burn to CD as a separate action.Thanks...I will try that. W |

Solve : AOL files? |
Answer» I am running Windows XP and use AOL 8.0. I have used 75% of my C Drive and am looking for things to delete to free up some space. Also, when I defrag, it seems I have about 2500 fragments from an AOL/Oraganize folder. When I use Windows Explorer, I SEE there is a Cache folder in the Organize folder with about 250 files. They all have the same name as my AOL user name along with some numbers. I don't know what these files are for and would like to delete them. Is this a good idea? Before you start deleting AOL files you may want to check with AOL. I would recommend just deleting these. Before you start deleting AOL files you may want to check with AOL. I would recommend just deleting these.GX1_Man, did you intend to say, "I would not recommend just deleting these."? Google, download & install CrapCleaner.Yes, I meanat to type NOT, but I was having a wangming moment. The AOL cache files that he is talking about, does anyone know how to deceipher and read these files? Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. tcarThanks for the input. I did find an AOL fix at AOL one-click fixes that removed the content of the Cache. I still am trying to figure out if it is OK to delete another file in the Organize folder. The name of the file is my screen name and it is 167MB. Seems rather large. In properties under type of file it just says "file." I don't know what that means but it would be NICE to delete such a large file if it isn't needed. I think there are 2393 fragments in that file, too, after I run defrag. I did download and run Crap Cleaner and deleted 347MB of junk. Imazing how much dust accumulates after a few years. Your best bet would be to dump AOL and all it's garbage...but i'm sure you've heard that before. |

Solve : itunes "dominating" the desktop.? |
Answer» other than the issue that itunes uses more ram than anything else on my system, i have two issues with the programs lust for dominating your desktop. (i guess there isn't an answer; this software is so useless.) I didn't want to say it. haha. Well as soon as ml_ipod supports video, photos and podcasts, then i'm off back to the smart side of the road. |
