I don't know why you started playing with partitioning software, but it is a bad IDEA for a novice and can get you just these results. Why did you think you needed such a thing? Having the two large partitions on there as when you got it is an excellent long term SOLUTION. You really don't need add on software and without a genuine XP CD you cannot partition with that restore set.

If it's 2 days old i would be exercising the Full Warranty...they don't need to know that you hosed your own system playing with powerful tools not COMPLETELY UNDERSTOOD by the user...

I have a Dell Inspiron 8200, XP, 512 RAM. I have had it for 4 years and it suddenly developed some serious problems. Windows boots up and runs. Internet explorer also runs. But I am unable to open Outlook, Word, Office, Adobe. I get Error25090. Office setup encountered a problem with the office source engine, system error -2147024893. Please open C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\1033\SETUP.CHM and look for "Office Source Engine" for information on how to resolve this problem.

I have this model of TV/monitor and i cannot set the resolution any higher than 800X600 when connected VGA.  If I do i get out of range message on my screen...PLEASE HELP...I searched for drivers on acer.com and there is NOTHING...They consider it to be a TV...any work arounds?  I am also using NVIDIA GE FORCE 6600LE graphics....that driver is up to date as well....Well, according to http://www.pcw.co.uk/personal-computer-world/hardware/2147766/acer-at2001, the native resolution, when used with a computer, is 800 x 600pixels.  So, perhaps there's nothing you can do about it.

I just recently ordered a computer from newegg, in which i put together myself.  My problem is, when i plug my moniter up to my graphics card it says "no signal".  I have a ASUS m2n4-sli board, 7900gs g-card, amd 2.4 ghz DUAL core proc, 2 gigs, and a 250gb HARDDRIVE.(dont know why i said that, figured it might help) So this is the only thing holding me back on my BIOS update, so now i have a 1200 dollar comp sitting there going to waste..but on another note, would i have to find a plug and play g card, because my g-card does require a drivers update disk.  this is my first time ive built a comp. from the ground up, so ill take any tips.

Are you positive everything is connected correctly? I'm not, especially as this is a first time to build a system. What kind of power connector do you have for the graphics card? How many connectors are going from the PSU to the MOTHERBOARD?

hello, here I am again. Solved my .EXE problem....was a trojan (downloader.agent.uj...lol) and after that my w2k thanked me by going haywire: my keyboard is not Norwegian anymore and when i change it and need to reboot, the W2K startwindow (how to start with W2K) appears which I havent seen since I installed it for many YEARS ago...lol...my IE changes form without me asking for it, my Outlook Express (which i dont use) all of a sudden asks for my mailattention etc etc...

have: W2K, IE60 (all updated up to yesterday), Sygate, AVG (both the antivirus and th antispyware) Spybot, Spysweeper, regcure and msn 7.0..............

What now....?Did you happen to start W2K in Last Known Good Configuration as part of trying to rid the trojan?nope.....lol.....maybe W2K felt itself "lost in space"? But the IE thing comes every time I start up W2K, strangely enough and the keyboard thing is like a flashlight, on out on out on out

I have previous posted about the Windows threat ‘Trojan.downloader.uj’ and that I have build a removal help tool for it.

I think it would be best for all if I post here some removal steps for this special threat which is really tricky, since it is a trojan but uses userland rootkit techniques.

Here are the steps:

Download the file "rmdlagentuj.exe" from following location: http://fileserver.ewido.net/public.cgi?id=20845
Execute the file "rmdlagentuj.exe" if it was SUCCESSFUL you will get a message dialog where you will be asked to reboot
Reboot your computer (Important!)
Execute a complete system scan with ewido anti-spyware 4.0 ( http://www.ewido.net )
It's hard to kill Win2000, but after enough time and insults it may be time to reinstall and start anew. A good format and reinstall solves all Windows problems for a while.  I agree, it sounds like this 'tool' has reverted your W2K back to the Windows defaults or last known good configuration.
Is there any way you can question the guy who made the tool?

There are a ton of errors with ‘cdrom’ as the Source, saying:
The device, \Device\CdRom0, has a bad block.
There are a few from ‘UPS’ saying:
The UPS service could not access the specified Comm Port.
There are a lot of recent ones from ‘Service Control Manager' saying:
The ScRegSetValueExW call failed for Start with the following error:
Access is denied.
And the most recent ones are Warnings, not Errors, from ‘Tcpip,’ stating:
TCP/IP has reached the security limit imposed on the number of concurrent TCP connect attempts.

Because of the Times of the Tcpip Warnings, I wonder if they have anything to do with a sound that started coming from the computer only about an hour or two ago. It was so loud it woke me up. I recorded it by mic:

I opened the case to record it, and it sounds like it's coming from the lower back of the tower. Might that sound have something to do with the reboots?

I could be wrong, but I believe it's a software conflict because it doesn't look like it's the temp or a virus/trojan, because I checked for both with trusted programs, and I haven't made any changes to the hardware. If it could be hardware, [highlight]is there a particular piece that would most likely be at fault when it comes to random reboots?[/highlight]

I do netwinner ( http://www.netwinner.com ) and Firefox BEGAN dropping the graphics at the top of the page and a submit that comes up PERIODICALLY and needs to be CLICKED.
I downloaded Gran Paradiso thinking that might SOLVE the problem but it didn't.

So what's with this MOZILLA problem of dropping graphics?

Ok, i have a Dell Inspiron 1200 laptop. i have an an HDTV with a VGA port. i can connect it to my laptop, but when i close the screen it still shuts off. I tried GOING to my BIOS and changing it from default power off, but my laptop dosen't have that. is there a TYPE of softwware i can install to do this?


PS: i got this idea from when they did this same thing with a sony VAIO on MTV's Pimp my Ride.

Try Control panel --> Power OPTIONS --> Advanced.
Options are there for what to do when you close the lid.

I need to get a karaoke thingy (descriptive, huh?) up and running.
I figured the best/easiest WAY would be to use my PC and speakers, and get some software to cancel the voice a little.
Has anyone here had any experience with this sort of software?
I need to download a program that can play the music, display the LYRICS and turn the vocals down.
I know this is possible using different programs, but I don't know of a program that can do all three.
It also needs to be free - it can be a trial as I'm only using it for one day.
I searched Google, but I wanted to ask you all before I started downloading random things.
Just thought of something else - would this be possible using plug-ins for, say, Winamp?
If so, does anyone know of any plugins that would do this job for me?
I did search the Winamp site, but I couldn't find anything.
If you need more info then let me know.

I found out that it's hard to REMOVE vocals, so I'm leaving them in.
I got this plugin for Winamp to show the lyrics too.
It's pretty cool.

It was the first thing I tried.
I'm not very proficient with Audacity though, I'm just adequate, so maybe it could've been ACCOMPLISHED, but I couldn't do it.
That plug-in worked fine anyway, Winamp is surely an awesome media player.

What would be a decent FREE reg cleaner?I've been using one called Regcleaner and it hasn't been updated for a while.This cleaner was free and it still works(or it did the last time I used it).I basically used it to get rid of remnants of deleted files.I've HEARD of one called Regseeker but downloaded one yet.Thanks.I'll mention two programs.  One is CCleaner, a disk cleanup utility and Registry cleaner.  The other is Eusing Free Registry Cleaner

You should always BACKUP your Registry before using a cleaner.  Creating a WINDOWS Restore Point before running the cleaner is also a good idea.I'm going to consider that reg cleaner.I have ccleaner.However i have a regcleaner it's called Regcleaner 4.3 and it's not listed in add and remove and i don't see it in all programs.I do see it in my docs.Is it safe to delete from there?Did you actually install Regcleaner 4.3?  Or, are you simply saying you have the installation file that you downloaded?  If the latter, then, yes, you can just delete it.  

I do have the program.It is in program files as well.I can still use it but it's obsolete.Shouldn't it be in the places i mentioned above.However i never checked the registry.So, you're saying you did install it, right?  One way to do a proper removal would be to reinstall it, thereby getting it on the Add or Remove Programs list, and then remove it via Add or Remove Programs.I reinstalled and it still wasn't in add & remove.So i went into it's functions and found a uninstaller there.Thanks for staying with me on this.Do you use this reg cleaner you mentioned?

I have downloaded mp3gain to help regulate my MUSIC files HOWEVER all of my music is in acc FORMAT on itunes. I've downloaded accgain as SUGGESTED but I can't get the two programs to WORK together.

My menu bar is gone. All I SEE is my SEARCH engine bar?Need more INFO, what is your OS? what is your INTERNET browser?

This is the situation. We have two computers. Both computers are sharing internet via a router (both are behind it). We also share files and a printer (printer is connected to computer A). The network is secured. Computer B (my computer) is a brand new pc. Both are running Windows XP.

As I mentioned somewhere in this thread, my CPU was being eaten away. This was an understatement - it's eating my CPU (Computer B's) to crashing point (> 100%). The same occurs with Computer A. I've checked all my running processes using the ctrl-alt-del and a Startup Manager program and none FOUND were harmful. The CPU is not ALWAYS at 100% - just now it was at 10% and suddenly jumped to 60%, back to 40%, up to 100%, etc. It's average is at 50% right now.

When I pulled the routerplug, disabling my internet and network, CPU usage dropped to below 10% on Computer A, possibily and most likely also on Computer B (which I will check in a minute). CHECKED: It made very little difference on Computer B.

Additionally (which was my original thread's topic), on Computer A, the software LimeWire, iTunes and Winamp will not load. On Computer B, the system tray ICON for Networkstatus (the one that shows the connection speed etc.) would not load. My theory on this however is now: the lack of CPU prevents them from being loaded.

No viruses or worms were found on Computer A using Panda Antivirus - No viruses or worms were found using McAfee on Computer B. Hijack This proved to be clean. I have manually checked the pc for several worms as well (svchost etc. acting weird), but this turned out clean as well.

After resetting the modem and router, things seem to be a little bit more stable, but it still far from perfect.

Main browser: Internet Explorer (newest version whatever it is)

iTunes, Winamp and Limewire have only one thing in common, and that's their ability to play media (or music? I'm not sure what Limewire and iTunes can do exactly, not very familiar). I just don't understand why, or what my Netwerkconnection Status has to do with it.

Also, my CPU is being EATEN by something(s). 65-90% of my 2,8 ghz dual core, which is quite unusual...Well all the apps you mentioned do phone home to check for updates etc...Closing down McAfee made no difference..What browser are you running ? ?Firefox.

Please read my original post, I have editted it now and the problem lies not specifically with the software not loading, but with lack of CPU capacities, or so my theory goes. Anyway, the CPU problem is of much more importance than iTunes and co not working. Have you stopped any unnecessary services and programs from loading at startup? Indexing service is a primary culprit. It is a CPU and memory hog. Go into msconfig and disable as many programs as possible from loading at startup. If you don't use them immediately or often, start them when needed and close them when finished. All those programs loading at startup are also extremely hoggish. All programmers want their crap loaded at startup, and if you allow all of them, they will crap your machine.Even a load of crap running at startup shouldn't do that to either of those machines, especially the dual-core.
Disable unnecessary services and programs as suggested by 2k_dummy.
I personally think this is a virus problem, possibly contracted through Limewire.
Try loading in safe mode - does your CPU still get "eaten"?Sorry I didn't reply before, was unable to due to heavy workload.

I did all that. Disabling startup items made no difference. I CLEANED up my entire pc. Since my last post somehow stopped jumping to 100%, but can still easily jump to 70% at random times.

I uninstalled McAfee (fully, deleted everything it left behind as well including registry keys), made no difference (but I was sick of McAfee anyway so it's okay).

I of course checked with virusscanning, Spybot, AdAware, HijackThis. Nothing was found.

What I do notice now is that whenever I hit ctrl alt delete to check my CPU usage, I can see the CPU being abnormally high, like 80% as it was just now, but it immediatly jumps back to 1 - 15% after that, as if it's hiding its excessive CPU usage for me.

The only eating processes I have running is Azureus, Firefox and Explorer and I hardly think they can do this to a 2.8 ghz dual core. I've checked my running processes countless of times and nothing weird is in it. The total amount of running processes cannot do what happens to my CPU.

So something weird is going on. Could it be my LAN, something wrong with configuration? I'm attempting to virusscan with Panda now.

The other pc is doing fairly well, I think, it still has some CPU usage but that somehow kinda solved itself. It still is very slowPost a screenshot of your running processes....

Next in line would be a Hijack This log.

I recently CREATED a publisher file on my laptop via Microsoft Publisher 2003. When I TRIED OPENING it on another laptop using Microsoft Publisher 1998 it would not open DUE to it being created on a newer version. Is there a way of opening the file on the OLDER version ('98)

I don't know if this is possible, but I want to edit a sound file I recorded, and remove a sound that's drowning out the voice. I know about the Noise Removal tool; trouble is, I can't FIND a piece of noise without the voice.

Allow me to EXPLAIN. I was playing a game (I'm sure you've heard of Crimson Room; it's all over the net. Well, I was playing "Viridian Room", the sequel) online, and encountered a strange sound. It was... bizarre. That's all I can think to call it. However, I noticed it had the earmarks of a voice -- reversed!

Using Audacity, I captured the sound. I then reversed and sped up the voice. I am able to discern the first sentence, but after that, a very odd sound drowns out the voice. I need it removed. Is there a way to do this?

I'd actually never heard of it until you posted this.Yes -- Quite freaky. I think it's supposed to be a sentence when reversed. By that, I think he MADE the "satanic" voices by recording himself, mixing in a weird sound, slowing it down, and reversing it. If anyone can make any progress, let me know. I've botched it about 20 more times. I've not got anywhere with it yet.

Using W2K (SP4), IE60. 1024Mb RAM.....Sygate Firewall, AVG antivirus, XoftspySE, Spysweeper and Spybot and AntiTrojan remover...AMD ATHLON 64, 3200+, Radeon 300SE...

Lately my explorer.exe gives that stupid message: X(which means all the software that needs explorer.exe).exe had generated an error and will be closed etc etc....
No virusses, no spyware, no trojans, my Western Digital Guard says my 3 HD's are clean and ok, registry SPLENDID (although this message doesn't appear after restart, for a while that is...)all W2K updated....even defrag is ok....problem is of course when I try to find something and want to use the HD search, it works for 5 seconds before that message comes again...

Tried to find a Google answer, but nope....and HijackThis shows just normal procedures...

Maybe you guys and gals have some enlighting answers to this problem....( I hope...)Does this happen in safe mode?No idea.....it happens when I use the PC...lol....To enter safe mode, reboot your computer.

When you first TURN on the computer keep tapping the "F8" key until you get a menu, one of those options will be to enter safe mode.  Select it and hit enter.

The computer will boot into safe mode, this could take longer then a normal boot up.

Try and see if you get the same problem in safe mode.yup, same procedure here too...the message comes here too

I tried to restore my comp, reinstalled Works and even deleted and REPLACED the mswkscal.wcd file. All to no avail. I'm thinking that ANOTHER file/prog that it NEEDS to run got taken out. I was wondering if anyone knew of any software that would allow me to block certain websites during specific times of the day.

The Reason for this being that my Children are homeschooled and I would like to block them from using myspace or facebook while they should be doing schoolwork, however I would like them to be able to use it again later on, without me having to go to the computer and disabling Content Advisor, every day. Basically I need to block these sites from 8:00-3:00 every weekday, but they should have access the rest of the day.I took a fair amount of time looking into some solutions.  Unfortunately everything I found either blocked all internet access on a schedule (but not specific sites) or could block specific sites but not on a schedule.  The sites were either blocked or not blocked.

However...

Almost every commercial parental control package SUPPORTED reporting.  So once a week (or as often as you like) you could view the log of every SITE you child visited and at what time.  While this won't prevent them from going to the site, it will let you know if they went at a period of time you told the kids they couldn't.

Thank you for all your input.I would also highly suggest setting up a user account for the kids. You can block them from installing, DELETING and generally wreaking havoc on your machine while you are hard at work...

This is a Win95 OS, on a fairly older computer.
After installing a game on a friend's computer, it SHUT down and restarted, and then you had to enter password, desktop came up showing only 2 Icons, the rest were blank.  Also, the mouse and keyboard would not work, nor could you open the CD container.  It was like it had turned off.  We pushed the reset button and it did the same thing.  Now, of course, I am to blame for crashing her computer.  
Could this be a resolution problem CAUSED by the game install?
Or could I actually have changed something in the registry by installing it?
My friend's husband can't play his Pogo games and this might result in tragedy!!!

After you get into the machine, you probably want to remove the offending software.

Note: before attempting to install stuff in the future, try to ensure that the prereqs are met.

usually, system requirements are listed on the box, in the install instructions.  failure to meet these can often result in unexpected results.

Was recommended to this forum by the instructor at PARKLAND Junior College Champaign, Illinois. My PROBLEM; I'm TRYING to install software for a Palm Z22 into my wife's desktop PC. It is a HP Pavilion a735w with Windows XP. The drive is a CD/DVD combo. I put the software in the the drive and the PC acts like it wasn't even there. I have successfully downloaded the software on my Laptop(which ALSO has Windows XP), a Packard Bell PC which was purchased before 1998 and my wife downloaded the software at work.  I know the drive on the 735 works because I downloaded software before and after I tried the software for the Palm. I also know the software works as well as the Z22. Appearently the 735 has an issue with the software. I have contacted both Palm and HP support and no help from them.
I have tried everything I can think(keeping in mind I would be considered a BEGINNER at this) and am at a loss so far.
If any of you out there can be of any help, this ole Marine would be grateful.

If that is like the ONLY cd that does not work in that one computer, it is likely something as simple as a variance in quality in the CD or something silly.

I have had the odd CD that my CD drive could not read over the years.  It is really rare but can happen and not worth worrying over unless it becomes a regular problem.Thanks for your reply. The 735 is between 4 and 5 years old and appearently there is something in the PC's software that will not allow it pick up the cd. When I was checking for sources the letters UK kept coming up so maybe that had something to do with it. What ever the issue it was over my head. Anyway, did get the link dowloaded wouldn't download on RUN but did download on SAVE ok so my wife's Xmas present is online and up and running and everyone is all smiles this morning!!

Is anyone FAMILIAR with, AlternaTIFF a web browser add-on (ActiveX control or plug-in) that displays most of the common types of TIFF image files.

Unfortunately, I don't, when I was rich, I had a software prescribed or reccomended by the USPTO, since then, they have changed their system,
and now are offering the above. I have located what looks like a download from
a computer search, and have results showing a mess of files for Active X, do you care to discuss and inform, I am not sure what I getting myself infor and if it is loaded it does not seem to be working ?  
Well I checked out AlternaTIFF plug in and it seems legit.  McAfee site advisor gives it a green light and the downloads contain no viruses or spyware or adware.

The software page does say you have to register it before it will work.  Have you done so?This link is a test page for the plugin, it has LINKS to advice based on what you can see on this page.  Check it out.

JpI do not know what files you are trying to delete, but I would advise, at least for now, not to delete anything.

Do the test page and follow the advice there.

If that does not work you can try installing the software again, there is likely no NEED to delete anything first as this is just a plug in.Will do.

hola folks...just bought an older version of a Broderbund/Learning Company program for my son.  It's called Kid Pix Deluxe 3.  I can't get it to work properly and have tried to contact the company, but played the clickthelink runaround (grrrrr).  I get an error when I try to use several important tools in the software.  I have WindowsXP(counterfeited)  and,  in trying to solve this software issue, have discovered that I'm having QuickTime and Windows MediaPlayer problems...I am at a loss.

I know this is vague - does anyone have any help to offer.  Will give more info, when needed.A pirated version of XP causes all sorts of problems.
I think the best solution would just be to buy a legal version, otherwise we could go round in circles forever and never get ANYWHERE with it.

When i said tht my burned dvds skipped, yes i did mean when i played burned dvds, and as i have stated it wasn't only nero i was having this problm with, it was roxio, and no the movies are in avi. File Format. And no matter how i approch burning tht dvd, The preview of the dvd on the computer, and the burned dvd it's self both skip!

If it helps any, in roxio, there is an option to text you graphic to determin wether the rendering should be done by hardware of software. Now, when i do that it automatically switches it to software "Due to the know capabilities of my hardware" but then playback is even worse! it just goes nuts jumping!! so i have to manually switch to hardware and then i get jumping every few seconds.c_starrs......  Sorry to be presistant , but I believe I asked you 5 questions....and you sort of answered the first one........ the answers to the other are just as important ...... and I would like to add one more .

I have windows XP PROFESSIONAL with SERVICE pack 2 on my computer. I'm using Office professional Edition 2003 (Academic Edition) on my computer as well. I just want to reinstall Outlook 2003. When I load the disc to reinstall I get a message from "Windows Installer" That says, "THE INSTALLATION SOURCE FOR THIS PRODUCT IS NOT AVAILABLE. VERIFY THAT THE SOURCE EXISTS AND THAT YOU CAN ACCESS IT". Can anyone TELL me what this means, and MAYBE how to fix it so I can reinstall Outlook??Leave the CD out of the drive, you may or may not need it on hand however.

Double click add/remove programs

Find Microsoft Office 2003 and click "CHANGE" not delete.

Choose "add or remove features" and follow the WIZARD to add Outlook to your installed office programs.
Well, if it were my computer I would try to completely uninstall Office 2003 and reinstall it after with the options I wanted.

If you try that be sure you have your office CD and your key code before you do.

If you still get the error there is the Microsoft Windows installer cleanup utility which may help.  You should carefully, carefully, read the instructions from Microsoft before you use it, and if in doubt about anything, ask first.

Kids were in OUTLOOK and I ENDED up with this preview view.

Please help - how do i change the view back to the default....?   :-?

Drag the from and SUBJECT boxes back to the BAR with all the other fields.  Or go to View-->Arrange by and untick "show in groups".

When i create a form in outlook, when users complete it, i can view the response to the dropdown box they select, but i cannot view any FREE text they enter. It's not an issue with wordmail. does ANYONE have any ideas? i'm using outlook 98 on NT 4.0

Hmm so I've been having some problems with my computer recently (ironically the day after the warranty expired)

Long story short + $$$ later everything's fine...except after a day i have problems watching any type of video. No matter the player, Quicktime, Windows Media, VLC, etc. whenever video is played they slow down my computer to a crawl and only play audio. I disabled video acceleration in WMPlayer, just tinkering around, that helped with how slow my computer would go but it still wouldn't display the video.

Right before all this started happening I formated my hard drive and immediately put antivirus protection on...scan brings up nothing so I doubt it's a virus...yet.

Help plz? I wanna enjoy my brand new ipod video haha

What are you using for virus/spyware protection?Ok...well previously (before the reformat) my computer would freak out if anything larger than a 512mb mp3 player was hooked up to it's usb drive, and would instantly shut down, (it would still shut down with everything else just about 5 minutes later) GIVING me an error caused by aluria software. I hadn't had aluria security installed on the machine for months. So I reformatted the HARDDRIVE to try and fix whatever was wrong so i could use my ipod. Yes i used the emachines restore cd (that was a pain in the *censored* as well, the first time i try to use the dvd burner on this machine it breaks, when I'm trying to copy all my music to a dvd writable i had, so it was a 1/30 chance it would read the restore disk)

And it didn't do this immediately after format, about a day afterwards.

I'm using avast! security, with 512mb ram. Windows xp service pack 2, with all the current updates downloaded.Does your Device Manager show a clean bill of health?  What driver does it show for your display adapter?  Try running DXDIAG and run the tests on the Display tab.  Does it pass all tests?  Well I scanned for hardware CHANGES on my entire computer...nothing came up afterwards so I'm assuming that means it's all good?

oh and an update about my vid card, i'm using a nvideo geforce 6200 the other one was my onboard one apparently.

Can't install QuickTime on my computer. When I try to install it I get a message that says it is UNABLE to OPEN the following KEY:

"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Apple Computer, Inc.\QuickTime\Installed File Types\3g2,3gp2"

and it tells me to verify that I have sufficient access to that key.

I was wondering if anyone knows how to fix the problem. Try and KEEP the answers as simple as possibel because I am not that advanced with computers.if you have itunes you can download a newer copy and install it and quick time COMES bundled in that.Yes, but if he does that, every .mov file he opens will have iTunes open as well. For this, I hate iTunes.

If you just want to copy the music to your hard drive, you can use something like iTunes, WMP, or Winamp.
Then you can mess around with the sound files using the free Audacity program.
Without knowing exactly what you want to accomplish it's hard to give ACCURATE advice.

KuweekeeHas your email host changed any settings, perhaps?  We (I work for an ISP) impose a 15 SECOND delay on all email sending, to slow down the spammer.  (I.e. the first email takes 15 seconds before transmission starts - all others in the queue go immediately.)But, that would not affect simply having multiple message windows open and switching between them, would it?  He didn't mention sending, just viewing.I'm not that familiar with Outlook so I don't know, but he did SAY this:

Did you recently incorporate any antivirus software?  Almost all of the time...depending on your brand of software...the antivirus program will cause a delay...particularly if it scans your outgoing email.  Norton is famous for this problem.

Hi, all.  Kind of a newbish question here...

In another folder Fed is helping me straighten out the MATTER of a BOTCHED DRIVER replacement job I did.  We've determined that I need to install a unified driver from Nvidia, but the installation hints say that I need to disable Norton (my anti-virus program) and also my "download accelerator".  Thing is, I can't QUITE work out what or where the download accelerator is.  Is there a way to locate it, or even determine if I actually have one?  I've just sort of vaguely been assuming that I do.

Have a look in your control panel .... add/remove programs and see if you can see any listed there ......( they should be)

There is a new Hp-laptop (with dual processor, 80G HDD, 1GB RAM & DVD/RW) with Windows XP loaded. How to create a recovery disk onto a DVD?You will have to get instructions from HP to do that if they did not SEND you a restore CD set, if that is an option. Check your documentation.

Otherwise you will need to BUY a copy of Acronis True Image or something similar.

I recently recieved an update for the security CENTER, version 7.1. Now, when I turn my computer on I have no internet connection. I have a cable connection that needs to be reset every TIME I turn the computer on. Once I reset it, everthings fine. But once I turn it off and back on, no internet. Is it possible that the update has something to do with this problem? I haven't changed any other programs and I've already changed the modem. I'm not getting any error messages, other than a non connectivity error when I open a browser. I'm running windows XP. I've used previous McAfee products with no problems. Has anyone had a problem like this? Any help WOULD be appreciated. Thanks.
                                              JoeYou need to look into the setting for McAfee.  Somewhere in there should be settings for letting applications access the network / Internet.  Sounds like the update changed something to not let you get out.

I have noticed it only happens when the computer is off for a prolonged period, for example, overnight. If I turn it off and turn it right back on I still have internet access. Best part about it is that its cheap and no management is NEEDED. All e-mail exchanges are handled by the registered domain service like godaddy. at www.godaddy.com

Exchange 2003 is complicated to set up. I havent installed one by myself yet. I have HIRED these tasks out to MCSE's, but its expensive. Once its up and running, with a good backup routine and parachutes its easy running.

But for companies with less than 25 mailboxes I leave it up to a cheap monthly service. Its also easy to point your outlook express or MS Outlook (any version) to the mailboxes at say Godaddy.

The last one I set up was $25 a month for the domain registration plus mailboxes, which works out to $300 a year. In comparision to the setup, maintenance, and expense of MS Exchange. Its WAY cheaper to have an outside service handle it.

BTW: Setting up a Server 2003 box is a smart idea. Be sure to enable Shadow Copying, it protects from accidental deletion/ corruption of files.

I am still using Server 2000 and now upgrading as my clients wallets permit to Server 2003 for the Shadow Copy feature as well as all the other benefits over 2000.

Also...some options to keep the price down for Mail Exchanges are to go the route of Linux is you are familiar with Linux, to use one of the many Free Mail Exchanges. They all have pros and cons, the cons usually being limitations, the pros being bells and whistles that one may have over the other.

In a Word table I have a single column of words that I'd like to convert to text as a horizontal string of words each separated by a comma and a space (as FOLLOWS):  

alaska, bolide, camera, digital, etc

When I do the "Convert Table to Text" and request it to separate the text with a comma, I get a vertical listing of the words with no comma or space (as follows):  

alaska
bolide
camera
digital
etc

What simple thing am I missing here, and how might I solve this one?

DennisI don't think you're missing anything.  It simply will not work the way you want.  

If this is something you need to do on a recurring basis, you could record a macro that will speed up the PROCESS of adding a comma at the end of a word, hitting the space bar, hitting the DELETE key to bring the word below up on the same LINE, and then moving the cursor to the end of the next word to start the sequence again.  I would assign a keyboard SHORTCUT to the macro so that you can run it by simply hitting the right keys.  Use search and replace (Ctrl+H).  Search for ^p (that's the code for a paragraph mark).  Replace with a comma followed by a space.  Job done.

I have a Dell machine RUNNING Word 2002.  After working on a document #1 saving it and leaving it open, you CREATE a NEW document and save Document #2 as a new document> Instead of displaying document #2 the system displays document #1.  Both documents are on the task bar at the botom of the screen though.  Does anyone have a idea why this is happening?  Under a tight dealine to get this FIXED.

What i am looking for is a program that will hide my window at the bottom bar and when i use a key command it will show again. I googled it but the one i found came with ad aware.Windows has this built in...right click on the taskbar and select auto-hide...this hides the bar until you mouse over it.I think he means hiding a program from appearing on the task bar. Not SURE how to do it, though.Things like keyloggers are programmed with this type of capability, but I'm not CERTAIN how you'd be able to hide anything else unless you programmed it yourself.I have seen programs with this built in, the one that springs to MIND was a feature called "boss key", part of an adware-loaded add-on for MSN that I unknowingly installed which I used a long time ago when I still used MSN Messenger rather than GAIM.

I am replacing my pc shortly and would like to transfer all my software and settings from my old "C" drive onto my new pc but not xp (I am getting a new xp so as to GET a voucher upgrade to the new Vista or maybe it will be a better idea to run the xp from my old pc and buy Vista as it comes out!!)
Can this be done and if so what software do I need.

The software will need to be reloaded from the original CD's for a correct installation. Windows should be installed when you get the new machine, whatever it is. Just copying that over onto new hardware seldom works. Data files are easily BURNED to a CD/DVD for movement. Special instruction are availabel for easy transfer of e-mail, IE settings, addressbook, etc.Here are a few ways to copy ur data and preserve settings...

Well the first part is partially preserving a windows configuration with nLite. With that u can make ur own personalized Windows Installation CD, but it's got it's limits.

After that u can copy data and settings. The problem here is I've only found software that u need 2 pay 4, that can do this
My 2 favourites are Genie Backup Manager and Acronis True Image. They both can copy settings and data onto a medium of ur desire.

But if u've got two computers with a windows installation on it u can use Windows own functin to copy ur stuff. START-->All Programs-->Accesories-->System Programs-->Assistant to copy files and settings.

Are there any BACKUP that will copy the OS?

Such as if you have a hard drive crash and install a new hard drive is it requred to install the ORIGINAL ( XP Home ) disc  first in order to USE the backup to replace your files, programs, etc.

I am really trying to find if Acronis 8.0 will work as that is what I have installed.
Have copied a full disc of my hard drive into Acronis Startup Recovery Manager and checked the image, report ok.

Removed the master and slave drives ( which are working fine ) installed a new hard drive, shut down, installed the Acronis Boot disc and clicked on restore image, it ASKED for what do I want to restore. The disc I copied only has the "C" partition, so I entered C:\ , it would GO no futher.

At this point I am lost, can you help?
