I tried to do a windows xp reinstall yesterday but a message came up and said that the version I wanted to install was older than the one I had now. I think this is because I have windows XP SP2(I think).
What should I do....leave it ALONE or try the reinstall anyway?

The reason for the reinstall would be because I think I deleated a couple things  I don't think I should have ( I got a little cocky, thought I KNEW what I was doing).

Is the XP cd you have a MicroSoft issue with SP1 or is it a copied cd ?


dl65  Not SURE I can answer what you asked....However..I have the disk that I purchased. It is from Microssoft. What I wanted to do is put the disk in and re-install it, so that anything I may have deleted by accident, will now be back in. Since I now have XP SP2, the version I was loading said only XP. Can I still do it, and then re-download SP2, or is there a way to see what i am missing and then ask for only that to be installed.
I hope someone knows what I mean. My computer runs fine and I don't want to mess it up, but I would like EVERYTHING to be there if I need it and I do get occasional messages that say I need this or that to do this or that.ok, here we go.

Split or HDD (that is create extended partition)  and install  OS over there.
After set that partition primary and boot in from there.
and finally delete XP SP2.

As for creating partitions : don u have any utility able to do that?
If no, i'd recommend Disk Director.
This utility can split/merge partitions.
Besides, it has OS selector feature.

How can I convert mp4 FILES into other type?
Which program would you reccommend? please give me SERIAL No. as WELL.....

i was using Bitcomet 0.6 and it worked fine until i bought new computer and used bitcomet 0.8 and it sucks .... the download speeds are very low .... can the client be the reason ? what bittorrent client do u recommend ?

It really is AWESOME, I use it (only for legal stuff I hasten to add).

I just GOT an Apple IPod Shuffle and I have download ITunes and have transferred all my songs to my ITunes libary. How do i transfer some of songs into the IPod and not all of them. I did not check some of the songs and PRESS "Autofill" and it transfer all the songs in the library to Ipod. I got the Ipod as a GIFT and it did not have any manual. I would LIKE to have the user pick a column heading value and enter it into a cell and pick a row heading value and enter it into a cell.

I would like Excel to pick the value at the intersection of the column and row and enter it in a third cell.

Consider a combination of IF + AND + LOOKUP.
I used to work on similar situation but I'll need sometimes to look for the workbook I did.This is BASED on your table, if it's just that simple.
But if you have unlimited number of rows and columns, you'll need to do some TWISTS and turns.

I remember using the shockmachine back when I was a kid and id love to go back to playing the games I havnt played for such a long time. So I found and downloaded shockmachine 2.0 but when I TRIED to open it I got a message SAYING it needs shockwave player 8.0 and if I click okay itll download it. I click okay and it takes me to the adobe site where I can download shockwave player 10. Which must be a better and newer version. But after downloading and installing it I GET the same message. Also I noticed there was no save when I right-click on a shockwave game so I couldnt even download the games. Doesn't shockmachine suport newer versions of shockwave player? If not how can I get 8? I have Windows XP and Internet Explorer for my main browser. I want to download a VIDEO from this address: http://www.wwltv.com/holidaygrunch2.htm    (The 12 Yats of Christmas). How can I download  this video and BURN it on a DVD  in my RW DVD DRIVE?I believe it can be done this way.  Play the video in Windows Media Player (WMP).  While it's playing, click on File and then on "Save Now Playing List As ...".  When it's finished playing or maybe while it's still playing, click on Burn and select it from the Playlist.  Now, start the burn.  

I haven't actually done this, but my WMP appears to be ready to allow me to burn to CD (I don't have a DVD BURNER) that video after saving to the playlist.  I'm using WMP 10.hhmm...here's my idea..

Try and download the videos with a download manager (I recommend Free Download Manager) with the links to the videos either

Sorry for such a basic question, but I cannot find any help in the Excel "help" section.   My worksheet has column headings of A,B,C, etc. but I'd like to change them to meaningful names. How is this done?   Also, can the same be done for row headings (1, 2, 3, etc)?

Thank you in advance!No, you can't do that.  Excel does allow using numbers instead of LETTERS for column headings but does not allow any custom or text LABELS to be used.   And, it does not allow changing row indicators from anything other than numbers.  

REALLY, there's no need to do that anyway.  Just USE row 1 to type in your column headings.  Likewise, you can use column 1, or any column, to type row labels.  By doing it this way, you really have sorting options that you would not have if Excel allowed what you wanted and you did that instead of doing what I am suggesting.

Shoved two cds into a cd-rw driver and now it wont burn and it wont read my cds eather.

Laser probably damaged and drive will need to be replaced. No user servicable parts.in order to troubleshoot the drive you must first remove the metal case around the drive, leaving the tray and laser visible. you will need to turn on your pc with the cd rom drive attached to see if the laser is working and to see if it is moving (the IDE/SATA cable does not have to be attached, only the power cable). be very careful while the comp is on. if the laser moves up and down once the cd tray has been ejected then closed (laser is attempting to read cd), then the gears are not the problem, the laser is. and as GX1_Man previously stated, it will need to be replaced.

Hurts the wallet though.Dragon naturally Speaking works well most of the time, HOWEVER if you have a cold it fumbles words. It also does not like background noises. I had a client who I installed this for. Works well 99% of the time, but when your voice changes, it fumbles the words.

I was RECENTLY invited to UPGRADE my AVG (or Ewido, I can't remember which) programme and I duly downloaded the combined version AVG 7.5 antispyware and antimalware - all ok.  I've since seen in "My Documents" that the Ewido set-up and Ewido programme icons are still there (I thought these might have been deleted as part of the amended new programme).  Can I now delete these WITHOUT problems?

Another query - I've also got other set-up icons there (ITunes, CC, Google Earth), a couple of them more than once - I suppose I must have been confused about the download process.  Do I need to keep these set-up programmes?

Another query (sorry about this) - can the same program be downloaded more than once (by mistake, say) so that the  programme is duplicated on the computer, or WOULD that be detected and an advice window inform you?

Thanks for any advice.1st query - The setup PROGRAMS can be safely deleted if you have already installed the program.
They are just there to install it, and serve no useful purpose after installation.
You may have just left them there after using them, most programs don't delete their setup programs after installation.

2nd query - as above.

3rd query - the same program can be downloaded and installed more than once, but generally running the setup once will install and the second time uninstall the program.  The same program cannot normally be installed twice.

I have a DELL Latitude D800 Laptop running Windows XP Professional and Microsoft Office 2002 Professional.  Whenever I click on the "Send/Receive" button to download my emails I get the error message "Operation Failed".  However I can successfully send a test message.  This PROBLEM showed up only recently - prior to which I had no problems.  No settings have been CHANGED. Repeated UNINSTALLS and re-installs have not FIXED this problem.  Any ideas ?

I've tried looking in ms config but it says its activated for start up. I've tried opening the application directly but it just doesn't do anything.

I am trying to save a big batch of JPG pictures from my hard drive to CD or DVD. Anyone has to good way to save them so that they can be shown on any DVD player as a slide show.  Right now I can see them in a slide show on the computer using Irfan View.  But the vertical ones (PORTRAITS) are sideways.  What is the fix for that?
PaulYou need to rotate the pictures using an IMAGE PROGRAM and then save them with a new file name...

As to creating a slideshow there are also freeware solutions out there as well...visit majorgeeks and hunt around.I know my window XP has this Windows PICTURE & Fax viewer that can rotate pictures and save it automatically. I cannot find it in the start menu. How do you launch it?Are your photos in the My Pictures folder?  If so, just open it and double click on a photo to open Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.  You also rotate the photos within My Pictures, without opening Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.

Anyone have any SUGGESTIONS for creating a Ghost Image or any System Recovery Image for a 64-bit OS? Tried installing Norton Ghost 2003, but its 32-bit software and wont install on the WINDOWS 64-bit OS. I want to create an Image of the system to DVD-R's to have as a backup instead of having to go through a full rebuild at some point in the future...

I do have a Hard Drive duplication station for cloning drives, but I'd hate to have to buy an additional 250GB drive and clone the 250GB drive and save it in storage until needed, and then clone the primary drive that gets hosed eventually off of the 2nd drive that was cloned initially with the harddrive cloning workstation through Digital Loggers Inc ( http://www.digital-loggers.com/128u.html ) that we own.

BTW: This drive duplication workstation is great for rolling out "like" systems. We use it for our POS Cash Register Upgrades, that also have 3 partitions on the drive in which Ghost wont work with it to create the virtual swap partition for cloning. We are able to upgrade 1 POS system, clone the single drive to the other drives and have the upgrade completed quickly on multiple lanes saving lots of time!!!

Any suggestons??? I'd really like to burn the image to DVD-R's or even to an EXTERNAL HD in which the image can be burned to DVD-R's if the imaging software does not support DVD-R burning.

Today, out of that 100 ... about 10-20 of them are light blue in color ... rather than in black like they usually are.

I am working on this "maintenance schedule" that is currently sorted out into tabs that are organized into the 12 months, jan, feb and so on.

I have to write either a command or a program that would be efficient enough to easily convert these monthly data in weekly ones.

So the command would have to convert those "jan, feb, mar... ...dec" tabs into "week 1, week 2, week 3... ...week 52". (prefably by linking them up some how)

Does anyone have any suggestions on how i go about doing this?Check out the VBA function DatePart. By using "ww" as the interval parameter, you can place a date into a specific week of the year.

The fourth entry is where everything breaks down; there is no date. Why is it on the October worksheet? Who put it there? Is there a piece of information not shown in the sample that indicates this entry belongs on the October worksheet? By the fact that it's current home is on the October sheet, the macro could narrow it down to the four or five weeks in October...but which week?

Without knowing the rhyme or reason as to how and why entries were posted to each months worksheet, you might need to resort to ye olde copy/paste method.

I have recently come across a freeware utility which checks browser bookmarks for duplicates, and lapsed LINKS. It's called AM-Deadlink, found at and is very useful. It got me wondering it there was something similar that could be used to check for DUPLICATE files. I'm sure that I have put the same file in a couple of folders, but it's tedious to check individual files.

What I'm looking for is a utility which will check for files of the same name in DIFFERENT folders, and if they are of the same size, created on the same day, will report them. Does anyone know of such a utility?

I cannot SEND the e-mail by foxmail. The MESSAGE I get says "servern cannot be reached".
The firewall is disabled and I have ALREADY checked all the settings (smtp server, and so on ).
I have also UN- and re-installed the program but the risult is always the same.
Outlook Express function as normal like all the other programs.

we want to attach a draft email for our boss to review and send out.  so we attached the draft email through the "attach - item" function.

but for some reason we can't send the draft email.  the "send" button is grayed out.

I'm starting to use CRM software for work, and they have just started planning using Vtiger, with the Vtiger outlook plugin.

Unsure of Vtiger release, but think it would be 5.02 too. (Would make sense they're using the same plugin release as program release EH? lol)

A few problems have come up, and I tried posting on their forums, but got no replies, so thought HOPEFULLY some of you might know about it.

The main problem is, all the EVENTS on the calender, when you sync them between outlook and the main CRM package, they sync okay, then when you go to sync again, they All say they should have been done on 1st January 1970.

Any help on that is the main thing i need.

Ok I have Windows XP. I am not very computer literate so I don't know how much help I can give you.  It says that I have Service Pack 1 but I went in an downloaded a bunch of updates.  I am trying to play a NEW video off of fox16.com and when I open it it plays the sound but cuts up the video or does not play it at all.You need to install service pack 2. That is the minimum required for XP support from Microsoft currently. Why didn't you install that already, he wondered quizically? What virus and spyware protection? Has it ALWAYS been this way? If not, what has changed? Etc.?When I did all of the updates it said that I was installing service pack 2.  I have Norton AntiVirus protection.  Here's the deal.  I haven't had this computer hooked up to the internet very long.  I have a friend who is a cop and I wanted to watch a video that he was in.  I couldn't watch it until I downloaded WMP 10.  I GOT on my computer, did the windows updates and downloaded WMP 10.  I still cannot watch the video and when I try to open a URL in the actual media player it says "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. Windows service pack 2 SHOULD include movie maker 2.1, the latest version of wmm, but my version is still the old 2.0. this would be okay, unless the old one wouldnt crash almost immediately after starting wmm. I tried it out a several times, and this DOESNT occur with only some video formats, but with everything you do with wmm. The problem is, as i already have service pack2, i cannot upgrade to 2.1. ive tried everything, from redownloading the old 2.0 to getting the new 2.1 (which all failed, of course.) I love to do amvs, and in my desperate situation i tried downloading other programs too, but none of them suited me as well as the old GOOD wmm did. (most of them never worked, and some were just too bad. (i missed the old drag n DROP) So i have decided not to GIVE up on wmm. you guys are my last and only hope. please help me fix this!

After a couple of minutes, wmm first freezes completely, then crashes.

Theres nothing wrong with my computer (i think). it was just recently formated, and before it, the wmm 2.1 i had at that time worked perfectly. Am i missing something...? Optical drives either work or they don't.

Well there really is no big problem, it's just when I use my d:DRIVE, which is my cd drive, It sounds as if it is struggling to SPIN. Is this NORMAL or am I just being paranoid. Other than that, the drive works fine. Thanks

Help - Installed UPDATE (9.0) to 7.5 and now having video problems.

I uninstalled 7.5 and that did not help.

When I try to start an app in 9.0 I get error messages regarding "An unhandled exception, etc" and the "Insufficient video resources to launch app".  Also my COLOR quality SETTING gets changed from 32 bit to 8 bit.

My video card is up to date and supports DirectX 9.

The exact error MESSAGE, your version of Windows and service pack, the video adapter, etc. would all be helpful things to know.

Based on what little pertinent information you gave, I would say reinstall the video drivers.

Whenever I load firefox it GIVES me the "Problem LOADING page" UNABLE to connect error. As if I wasn't connected to the internet, but Internet Explorer and my internet are fine. I reinstalled it, but nothing changed.

Any ideas?

Reason i ask is i've seen these symptoms and that is what was causing it.I uninstalled it again to see if it was installed twice or something, but it's still not working.

This method will LOSE all that data.

Remove FireFox in ADD / Remove Programs.
Now using Windows Explorer go to Docs and Settings/User Name/Application Data and you will find a Mozilla folder...Delete it.
Empty the recycle bin and re-boot.
Re-install FireFox and it should runproperly.

You will need to do this for each user if there are more than one.

My monitor ( came with my Dell 4700 computer in 2005) has been turning off completely lately in the last 2 DAYS.  Even if it's set to not to turn off, it does.  I have to SHUT the whole system down before I can get back on. I've tried to turn just the monitor off and on before turning everything off but, it doesn't help; it STILL doesn't come back on.  Does anyone know what's going on?  Is there an internal battery that I'm not aware of?
Any help is GREATLY appreciated  TRY it in another wall outlet.

Double check your settings in Control Panel / Power Management.and if possible, test your monitor in another computer and see if it does the same thing.I contacted the company (DELL) and they have asked to run the self test on the monitor.  Which, means disconnecting a cable or two.  Will let you know how it turns out.  Good Luck to you...let us know.

I'm not sure how much more info I can provide.  I first noticed the problem about a week ago during a restart.  I did have a power failure during a thunderstorm recently while I was playing Civ City: Rome, but I couldn't say for certain if that's when it began.  I can't think of any other trouble.  I haven't noticed any problems running software.  My mouse buttons are FUNCTIONING a bit differently during the game.  Other than that nothing noticeable is wrong with the system.  The message comes up in a tiny box at reboot and there is are no further details provided.  Just "Error:  Hook Load Failed."  I close the window and proceed without problems.

Beyond that, if there is a problem with any of my software, I haven't found it yet.  If there's something pertinent I've left out I'll be GLAD to respond.

Program asks me to press F5 to refresh drives this does not work. Help if you have overcome this difficulty.      My Computer is a Wintergreen Systems with a 2.53 GHz intel pentium processor. It has PC2100 512 DDR memory (ONE stick). It operates with Microsoft XP Home. It has a 80 Gig harddrive UDMA. I have broadband internet and a WINTV card. I have two BURNING drives (which "My Computer" recognizes.) a DVD+R Drive and a CD Drive (I'm not sure of their pin placements)Master, slave or ? which comes first? I suspect the WinTv card and software so, I am going to remove them. Nope that didn't work.Much more information about and history of the problem is needed. \


See below.Take out the WinTV card and see what happens. It has no beariung on master slave, so pick one for master and one for slave. Just to be safe, put the one on the far end of the cable as master.

Have you reviewed your email account settings in OE?  Does Wow high Speed internet have any support info for POP mail on their site?  I took a look and did not see anything.  Might be time to find another ISP.  Even the small ISP (serves about 8 counties in Ohio) my mother uses has this: Outlook Express Setup.

I purchased sys. mechanics 6 Pro. and activated DRIVE cleaner now my cpu stats in what appears to be DOS how ever I know nothing about this. I read a few forums and tried "WIN", "win", "exit", "EXIT" i even started to "win:\>" and nothing. I simply get Bad command or file name - "WIN" or "EXIT".  Please help i know to some this is funny, HOWEVER my college work is extremely important and I'm much too close to finals to be laughing right nowNo telling what you have done and those handy dandy programs CAN be dangerous. Reboot the machine and tap f8 several times before the WIndows logo appears to get to safe mode.

From there reboot and see if it starts normally.

If the same errors happen that you mentioned then go back to safe mode and try a system restore to a point before you installed that product.

However, I can't help but to worry about the competitiveness involved in this line of work and the necesity to maintain your knowledge up to date. I am slightly familiarized with the IT field, due to one fo my good frineds serving with me in the navy. He has explained some basics for general understnding, this being where I discovered my interest in computers past their normal everyday use. I need to copy single or individual tracks from SEVERAL of my CD's  (ie favourite tracks ) to make a compilation CD to play in the car.

I used to use Easy CD Creator Platinum 5 because it had a facility called "Soundstream" which ALLOWED me too copy individual tracks from a number of different CD's DIRECT repeat DIRECT to the Disc that I was using as my FINISHED compilation CD.

Since Roxio messed everything up and now have made that incompatible with Windows XP/SP2 I cannot use it anymore.

MY question  therefore is ..........does anyone know of any reliable CD Burning software that will allow me to do just that again , that is :-

Copy individual tracks from CD's direct to another Cd ,that is without loading it on to the hard Drive first.

Hope someone can help. Thanks in advance.This is not a good idea.  For HIGHEST compatibility, you need to burn single session CDs - i.e. everything in one go.  You can't do that with tracks from multiple source CDs; they need to be stored on your hard drive temporarily.

I have 533 mhz computer with the creative 32x cd-rom and have the mscdex and sbide.sys files, but it will not LOAD as no device found. I know it WORKS because when inserting xp cd it starts to load. It seems to say in documentation you need the [/p: port address, irq number, secondary port number ] SWITCH.  I know some of the choices but not all does anyone know an example of this address? I may also may have setup not correct yet as I have only a master drive and no slave drive I seen somewhere that a cd-rom will connect as a hard drive would.
