Solve : Bypass Cyclic Redundancy Error??

Answer»

I really hope I put this question in the right SECTION...

I currently have been experiencing problems with a game on my computer. I attempted to fix this problem through the use of uninstalling the game and then reinstalling it. Unfortunately, the game stops uninstalling due to a cyclic REDUNDANCY error. I then attempted to delete the game manually but end up with the same error.

I have searched on the internet for help but this problem usually is related to burning and not deleting.

Essentially what I am asking for is a program that will allow me to bypass this error and delete the file anyway.

Thanks for any replies!Welcome to the forums.

Please read this..

Well I'm using Windows XP and the game is downloaded on my hardrive (ironically to avoid problems like this :-/...). If there is anything else you need to know please ask. Hope I'm following the rules so far. Quote

Solve : RegDatXP v2.0: Confused on Restoring ntuser.dat?

Answer»

Hello & Thanks for taking the time to read this post!!!

Every time I log into my regular profile I am told the profile is corrupt and the system then proceeds to log me into a "temporary" profile.

I did a lot of searching on the internet for ANSWERS and am now at a point of repair where I cannot find anything to guide me during the "surgery".

What I have learned & done:
First off, most posts (including Microsoft) refer my symptoms to a corrupt ntuser.dat file.
This file cannot be accessed if it is currently loaded by the system, nor accessed using another profile that uses the same windows partition for its loaded files.

Second, I found many references to using RegDatXP as an excellent tool for restoring a "corrupt" file from the "systems" backup directories or from a manual backup I might have made. ( My last backup is 2 months old.. yes, yes.. stupid me )

Third, I bought RegDatXP and following its Help files, I now have slaved my original HD to a temporary HD.

Fourth, I'm a beginner at working in the Registry. I know you can mess things up quickly & permantly if you are stupid enough to change things you don't understand or aren't sure about what you're doing.

Fifth, I'm smart enough to pick up on things by reading manuals or help files as long as the authors aren't expecting a base knowledge above my level.

My Situation:
RegDatXP's help files regarding the repair process are above my knowledge level. I'm confused on how to repair the ntuser.dat file that is located in the profile of the slaved drive. I don't want to mess things up further by being ignorant & too stubborn to ask for help.

My Computer Specs:
The original HD was running XP Pro SP1.
The temporary HD happened to have Win 2K Pro loaded.
(If I need to be slaving to the same OS then I can immediately install XP Pro)

For anyone who takes the time to post a thought-out & well-written SET of instructions for me to follow, investigate or tryout, I Thank You Very Much In Advance!!!Since you bought RegDatXP, I would contact them for detailed instructions in it's use.

It seems like backing up your data files and reinstalling Windows would be easier than all of this.

You are correct that mucking about in the registry can complicate your life, but you may be beyond that point already.I had that once, but it fixed it self. Like I knew it would, otherwise it'd be a one way ticket to the reformat-belt.Thank You GX1_Man & Raptor!!

I really appreciate the time you both took to reply.

I didn't contact the author of RegDatXP because I felt he had only sold me the program & not customer service with it.  He had provided Help files that told alot but in some CASES were beyond my experience level.  So I didn't feel it was his fault if I didn't know how to properly use the tool.

And you are SOOOO right!!  It would have been easier to reinstall.  The reason why I didn't is because I really want to learn how to solve things without just saying, "Reformat & Install Time!"  LOL

Anyways, I almost did what you two suggested.  Here is the crazy ending to this situtiation which you'll both laugh:

The temporary HD had W2K on it and I was using it to boot up on.  After not finding any effective solution other than to reformat I decided to have some fun with it.
I have the image program HDClone.  I decided to image just my OS partition from my problem drive onto the OS partition that had W2K on it.
After it finished, I booted from that same master drive & SURPRISE!!  I can now boot into my profile that I couldn't on the other HD.
So, I powerdown, make the original drive my Master Drive & Viola!!  I can now boot into my profile.

Never would have guessed this weird ending.  I sure wish I didn't have to be a computer geek to have smooth running systems that never had problems.. LOL

Thanks again you two!! See you in the next post!!So a Win2K reg.dat file allowed you to boot into your WinXP profile that was corrupted ? ?

That's one for the record books.

But if it works ? ?

Solve : Windows Media Player 10 Help please!?

Answer»

Hello. I was wondering if someone here could help me solve my problem.

I've been wanting to play several mp3 songs from this site: http://www.disney-dreams.net/mp3.php and it usually works in my other computer. But on this laptop that I'm using right now, I always seem to get this error MESSAGE whenever I try to play one of the mp3 songs on that site above:
Windows Media Player cannot play the FILE. If the file is on another computer, verify that you are connected to the network. If you typed a path, verify that it is correct. If the problem persists, the server might not be available.
So I clicked on "more information" on this error message and it gives me this:
C00D1197: Cannot play the file
Windows Media Player cannot play the file. You might encounter this error message for one of the following reasons:

Your computer is not connected to the local area network (LAN) or to the Internet. Connect to the network or Internet, and then try again.
The path to the file is not valid. If you typed a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) in the OPEN URL dialog box, verify that the file name is spelled correctly and that the path to the file is correct, and then try again. If you clicked a link on a Web page, the link might not be valid.
The server is not available (for example, the server is busy or not online). Try again later.
Some network protocols in the Player are not enabled. Enable all network protocols, and then try again.
The proxy server settings for the Player are not configured properly. Verify that your proxy settings are correct, and then try again.
To enable all network protocols
On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Network tab.
In the Streaming protocols area, select all the PROTOCOL CHECK boxes.
To verify your proxy server settings
On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Network tab.
Verify your settings in the Streaming proxy settings area.
 Note

If you do not know what your proxy server settings should be, on the Network tab, select a protocol, click Configure, and then select Autodetect proxy settings or Use proxy settings of the Web browser (available for HTTP protocol only).
Error ID = 0xC00D1197, Condition ID = 0x00000000

----

I followed the above instructions and yet I still get the same error message over and over again. What do I do?Are these songs streamed?I just visited the site.  First thing I saw:

"Yes, I do realize that most of the songs aren't working right now.
My mp3 host changed servers, which means I'll have to re-upload all the music files.
Don't panic, I'm doing my best to get all the mp3 files online ASAP."

I see this is not streamed music.  It's music downloads.  I tried to download two songs. Nothing happend.

Solve : BSOD during XP Install?

Answer»

I keep getting a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD)
Stop Code: 0x00000024 and "partmgr.sys"
everytime I try to re-install windows XP on
this "Gateway" Model 700XL
The HDD is a Western Digital 120GB
CPU = Intel P4
MOBO = E210882
RAM = 512MB PC800 rdram (rambus)
I have changed out all ribbon cables, I have
removed every PCI card (except VGA Video card)
I have run memtest86, microscope v12 & many Hard Drive tests and they all come up fine!
I've set the BIOS to "Default".
I have tried to re-install over 10 times so FAR!
The BSOD happens the same spot everytime during the
copying files part.
Can SOMEONE please tell me what I need to do to finish
this re-install??? I'm about to lose my mind!!

Thanks,

RobFor how long did you run the diagnostic tests?

You should boot with minimum hardware installed, see if the problem still occurs.

(1 RAM stick + CPU/Heatsink + motherboard + videocard)I ran the diagnostic tests for a very long time...many many passes.

As I stated in my plea for help...I am running the minimum hardware already.

Thanks!Reset the CMOS to its default settings, insert a known working good RAM stick, videocard and CPU and retry.

Still happens? I THINK you then pretty much narrowed it down and need to replace the mainboard.

To be certain: You are using an original, nearly neat copy of Windows XP?I'm waiting to hear if it is a real or bootleg XP CD as well...  Fixed the problem!
I removed the Rambus MODULES and used an eraser on them and ran the re-install again
with NO PROBLEMS!!

Thanks for everyones help though!

Oh, by the way the XP I have is GENUINE!! Thanks for asking though!

Solve : Projects that utilize idle PC's to do work?

Answer»

Several years back, I had a FRIEND who participated in the SETI home project where you installed a program that downloaded data from radio telescopes, let your PC crunch the data during its idle time, and then sent the results back to the WEB site.

I have always thought that utilizing the power of all the millions of PC's sitting idle at any given moment to do something productive was a great concept, but although the search for EXTRA terrestrial life is an interesting venture, I wished that there was some project that I could play a part in that would be more beneficial to mankind.

Does anyone know what I am talking about and are there any current projects such as this?  Or with the advancement of processors over the past few years, is this type of project a moot point, as any individual machine could do just as well to crunch the data?

Solve : Unable to open applications such as winamp?

Answer»

hi im new to this forum and ive got a problem. im not exactly able to pinpoint how this problem started but i am unable to open applications such as WINAMP and vlc player. i reformated after much frustration, and this problem still occurs. what is strange is that everytime i open a program, cmd prompt (the dos window) would open up a blank screen and then close, and its as if the program never opened at all.

i've tried opening it from the program directory, from start windows, and nothing WORKS, its as if cmd prompt "took" over my computer lol. another thing i've noticed is that when i start up my computer, as soon as loads my desktop, 2 dos windows appear and disappear.

anyone may have a solution for me? thanks! What version of Windows ? ?

actually ive discovered that its just not my winamp and vlc, its basically happening to almost every application i have such as MIRC, bittorrent, creative volume control. What service pack is installed and what Internet security do you have ?Can you get into safe mode at this point ? ?

If so insert your XP CD and re-boot into safe mode (tap F8 repeatedly on startup before Win logo comes up).

Then go to Start / Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter...

Let it run til it finishes. Remove the XP CD and re-boot normally and see if this improves things.

patio.  8-)i dont believe i installed a service pack, computer was just reformated couple days ago.
anyway regarding to patio's post, i tried what you did,
it wouldnt let me snownow under safe mode. said "specific error code 0x000006ba [the RPC server's unavailable]"
so then i tried doing it on normal mode, and it worked, but no changes were made to my problem

ive also noticed that rundll malfunctions on my startups. the error window says that run dll having troubles running apllications or somethingAnytime you re-format and re-install you also need to update and install your Service packs...SP2 can still be ordered on CD from the Mothership if you are bandwidth impaired but you will have to grab all the updates that have been released since then...

BTW the error message you POSTED is probably related to SP2.

patio.  8-)i dont mean to question you but ive actually had a lot of experience reformating and i do it quite often (2-3 times a month) and this problem has never really occured beforeOk Great then we'll switch gears...have you ran all your malware scans...in safemode...with System Restore turned off ? ?

Did they turn up anything ? ?

patio.  8-)how do you turn off system restoreStart right clik My Computer and select PROPERTIES then System Restore...

i scanned with adawareAVG Free
SpyBot Search and Destroy
Ewido.

These are all free.
Dload and update each one before running the scans.

AdAware serves it's purpose but offers little in the way of real protection. Add these to your arsenal...keep them updated and scan regularly.

Solve : Register Cleaner?

Hi Folks
Can any of you recommend a good register cleaner- optimizer?
There seems to be plenty of free downloads on the Internet with free trials but they all seem to GIVE different results,
some find 10 problems some find 800 problems probably just PLUGGING to sell their product as a more though but my computer doesn't run that bad to warrant 800 problems +.
Which one do you use?
EagleDownload, install & update...

Ccleaner
(During install, uncheck the Yahoo TOOLBAR option)
(After install, SET Options>Advanced> 'Uncheck the 48 hour box')

Run the cleaner and also scan for Issues.
Ccleaner is safe and will not harm your computer.

If you want to be a little more adventurous Easy Cleaner from Toni Arts but be carefull with the Duplicate Files button.

Top of the Registry Cleaners IMO is Registry First Aid but the free version will only remove a small number of entries at one time. (That's if it's still available free)
Running Ccleaner prior to Registry First Aid would help.RegCleaner is somewhat useful as well.

Solve : Camedia program just disappeared?

Answer» HI everyone,
Newbie, so thanks in advance for any advice.
Running XP pro for a while now, with SYGATE Firewall, nothing fancy, but works fine...
Installed my Olympus DIGITAL cam program (Camedia) over a year ago...
All working fine, lots of pics loaded into the program.  Have been using this program since installing on a regular basis... Run installed and online virus programs regularly to try and keep out the crud, and keep my firewall updated!
Boot up today, program is gone!  No shortcut, no signs of program at all... Like it had never been installed?
For whatever reason, System Restore will not work, even though there are several restore points/dates to try, but tells me S Restore is unable to restore to whatever date I try?
So, does anyone have any thoughts on where I might look to see if the program is hidden somewhere, or if it was uninstalled/overwritten by mistake?
I have LOST and recovered data in the past, but never an entire program...
Thanks again for any suggestions.

I realize a mistake can be made, but to uninstall would be melicious... Although not ruling that out EITHER.
I am just looking for some way to see for sure if it was uninstalled, or just moved and hidden or something?

Anyway, so thanks for any suggestions

Windows ME crash back a few years ago.

You really shouldn't use Windows ME. Either use Windows 98SE or, preferably, something newer than Windows ME.

Also regularly copy all your important files to CD so you don't have to worry about losing data.

If you want to get your data back, stop using the Hard Disk Drive and install PC Inspector File Recovery immediatly.

The more you use this HDD, the more chance there is that you will overwrite the files you are looking to recover.

Solve : failed to connect message- Verizon?

Answer»

Recently, when I first start my computer and go to my e-mail at Thunderbird, I frequently get the message "failed to connect to server  incoming.verizon.net." If I go to Firefox and than back to Thunderbird, it works.

I have changed Zone Alarm from High to Medium and that works, too, but I am concerned about the safety of that. The local area connection on the task bar shows that it is connected.

When I check my account at Verizon it shows that "incoming.verizon.net is my incoming connection.

Does anybody have the answer to this or a comment about the safety of Zone Alarm on the medium setting?

Thanks.

I haven't used ZoneAlarm for a while, can you make a screenshot of the high/medium setting and post it here for me?I tried to print screen at the ZA Alarm site by PRESSING Alt and Print Screen at the same time and separately, but nothing happened.

So here is the information I have copied:

"Internet Zone Security

High - Stealth mode.  Your computer is HIDDEN and protected from hackers. Sharing is not allowed. This setting is recommended for the Internet Zone.

Medium - Visible but protected mode.  Computer can see your computer but cannot share its resources.  Incoming Net BIOS is blocked.  This setting is recommended for temporary use in the Internet Zone."

I don't UNDERSTAND why I am having this problem because I didn't have it a week ago.

Hope this helps.

Thanks.Just for future refrence buddy to do a printscreen jsut simply press PrtSc, no other buttons are needed to make one, just that one. Also did you make any changes to the firewall that could be blocking Thunderbird?! Weried how it would work second time though.

But... it loads the active screen into RAM then you have to open a paint program and then paste it in. It's the same with the whole screen.
Then save the file & upload it for display in here. Quote

I tried to print screen at the ZA Alarm site by pressing Alt and Print Screen at the same time and separately, but nothing happened.

Thanks.

Solve : Botched ICA Client Installation Causing Freeze UP?

Answer»

Hello,

If anyone has any advice for me, I would appreciate it.  My Wife and I just purchased a new Compaq Computer approx 2 months ago.  She wanted to log into her work network from our home computer, but apparently needed an ICA Client to do so.   I think something happened during the installation of this ICA client which caused it to unsuccessfully install.  Ever since, our computer freezes up after about 10 SECONDS after startup.  The first thing I did was removed the ICA Client from the Add/Remove Programs...but I noticed the same problem.  When I ran a search on my computer for all items containing ICA...I was surprised to find that several items were found in various places, even after I had removed the program.  I didn't want to start deleting stuff without knowing for sure what I was doing.

I think what is happening, is there are still components of this ICA Client whcih are trying to install on our computer, but in doing so, they are causing the computer to freeze up.

In the meantime, what I did was went into the System Configuration Utility and changed the settings from Normal Startup to Selective Startup and De-Selected the "Load Startup Items" option.   Even to do this...I had to be very quick, because after approx 10 seconds the computer freezes up .  But this is only a temporary fix and I would like to get all of the components of this ICA client off my computer so that it doesn't freeze up in normal startup anymore.

Any advice on how to correct this ?

Thanks

That doesn't QUITE work.

You should go into SAFE mode and manually remove any entries related to this program. Are you sure you FULLY uninstalled it? You should look for rogue parts in the following areas:

  • Start -> Run -> Services.msc
  • Start -> Run -> Regedit

Don't disable or remove anything unless you're absoutely sure it belongs to the program.

Download CrapCleaner and MAKE certain no entries remain in the start-up list. Also run the registry cleaner

Solve : MS outlook, how can I link a signature to an accou?

Answer»

Hi, I use MS outlook 2002 and I  have several email ACCOUNTS, for each account I have a different signature, each time I want to change an account, I also need to change the signature. It would be really handy if, when I change and account, the signature changes automatically, or visa versa, (as I often forget ) from looking around at other FORUMS etc it appears that this is possible and I need to assign a signature to an account, wonderful, but I'll be stuffed if I can work out how to do that. Any HELP would be greatly appreciated.

Timbo
Open up Tools / Options and you should see a tab for signatures...you can assign a different one to each account.

patio.  8-)Doing some testing here.  I can assign signatures to email accounts but when I open a new message panel, the signature that appears there is the one for the default email account.  I can change the account from which the message will be sent by clicking on the Accounts button and selecting the account, but the signature assigned to the default Account still appears in that message.  So, I then have to remove that signature and insert the correct one.

Again, whichever account is set as the default account determines which signature will appear in a new message panel.  And, changing the Account at that point does not automatically remove the signature associated with the default Account and insert the one for the selected Account.  Am I missing something here?EXACTLY, so do you think it's possible to have the signature change when you click on the account button to change the account? Or do I need to do it manually?

I can't even assign a signature to an account, if I go tools/options/mail format tab/signature button, then all I have is an Edit, Remove & New Buttons, even under Edit there is no mention of assigning the signature to an account, where do I do this?

Thanks

TimboAs far as I know now, it's not possible to have the signature change when you click on the account button to change the account?

You can assign a signature to a account in the panel opened at tools/options/mail format tab.  Don't click the Signature button unless you want to Edit, create, or remove a signature.  Of course, you must have multiple signatures before you can selectively assign a signature to an account.  At tools/options/mail format tab, you should see a drop down arrow for "Select signatures for account:".  Select the account in that box.  Then, select the signature you want to assign to it in the box below that one.  Click Apply, and OK.

Thanks Soybean, it appears that I have a version of Outlook which doesn't have those drop down boxes! Anyway it can't do what I want so I will contine doing manually.

Cheers.

TimboWell, I have Outlook 2003, but I found this reference which states the menu seqence for Outlook 2002 and it IS the same as 2003.  Outlook 2002 Tips and Tricks.  So, I think you do have those options.  You just aren't finding it.

Solve : Mixing software needed - free/trial??

Answer»

Hi
I'm doing a project with some friends and I need to mix some tracks
Does anyone have any recommendations on software I could use for this?
Preferably free software or ONE with a trial period - I only need it for this one thing, maybe till the end of the week
Don't really know the details of what I'm supposed to be doing yet (need to confer with other team members) but it involves three tracks and a total time of about 1 MINUTE (so not full tracks)
Any ideas?Well with no more details than you have provided, try a look here:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=free+mixing+softwareI already Googled it, just wondering if anyone knew any good programs before I started randomly downloading things
Do you think Audacity would be any use?
I do have it already but it seems a bit complicated, not really used itAudacity is good, but there is a learning curve to all of these.OK thanks Quote

As an extra comment:
Audacity is pretty simple to use...
It wont take to long to get used to it. Just make separate tracks, and import what you want to mix (or record it)To be honest, if your just doing basic STUFF then most (Audacity, Adobe Audition, etc...) audio editing software will do you.

In my personal opinion, audacity is great. It didn't take much to work it out from nothing. I would THROUGHLY recommend following the tutorial on the audacity website. Thanks guys
Meant to post yesterday but GOT tied up doing other things
I've done what i needed to do using Audacity
Took me about a 1/2 hour to get used to it, then it was easy
ThanksAlways check the software FAQ first.

Solve : Attaching exe. file to start data cd?

Answer» HI,

I am working on a fundraiser which involves a data CD.  What file(s) can I attach to that, when burned to the CD, will start the CD when the purchaser puts it into the CDROM?  I've been told I need to attach an exe. file.  Is there software I may purchase that has established exe. files that one can ADD to their CD's?   The CD will be in PDF format so that purchasers do not need any special programs to RUN the CD, but there has to be something I can add to the data that will automatically start the CD with INSTRUCTIONS for the user?  This area is NEW to me and I need any input anyone can provide.  Thank you so much.If it is pdf file, then you will have to make sure Acrobat or some other reader is installed and install that, if necessary. Then you have to get that to open the file.

Personally, if someone gave me a CD that wanted to install ANYTHING - Acrobat, QuickTime, etc. it would quickly go out in the trash.

But that's just me.  You shouldn't make an auto-run CD unless it has a decent Flash MENU or the like.

Never allow a CD to try and auto install something unless you want to make the users very nervous.Hi,

OK, that's 2 responses from learned folks that say NOT to put an exe. file on the CD.  What would you recomment?

A little background - The purpose of this project is to create a CD that has recipes (cookbook part) and stories and pictures (Katrina survior part) to sell with as much of the proceeds going to a couple of organizations who are helping residents on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.  This is a grassroots effort and is strictly on the up and up.  I am trying to cover all costs myself so creating the final product will be very cost efficient.  I don't want one cent from the sale of the CD nor do I want any reimbursement for that which I am spending to make this project happen.  But I most definitely need input on how the CD will work and what I need to do.

When someone puts the CD in the drive, what will trigger it to be read?  What do I need to do so it is safe and yet functional?   Putting a exe. file on it what I was told I needed to do, but this obviously is incorrect.

I truly appreciate the input so far, but would really appreciate suggestions on how to handle this.

Thank you so very much. Quote

Windows will ask what to do with the CD-ROM if you use conventional burning software such as Nero.

I'm not sure what you'd need to make it professional and get an autorun menu or autoinstaller, I'm guessing that's going to take some very good programming skills.

Solve : Unstable date....?

Answer»

Win 98se - Intel Celeron-A - A-Trend ATC-7100m mobo - Award Modular Bios - just 64mb PC133 SDRAM

Much of the above is probably not relevant to the problem which is that  at each cold boot the date has changed, all other settings remain STABLE.  The date is random, no pattern has been observed, and it is not changing to the default value.   Time obviously changes but is spot-on where it should be.

So far have reset the date in Win, Dos, and bios and updated the bios to the latest & greatest.  Have also installed a sparkling new Cmos battery ensuring that the contacts are clean.  Reverting to default settings then re-setting date/time makes no difference, on the next cold boot, even on the same day, the date has changed.

Any ideas what to try next please :-?Perhaps your CMOS chip has had it. Which could mean that you're going to have to look for a new mainboard.

Thanks for the response Raptor.

WOULD problems with the CMOS chip just affect one of the settings?

I used to have an old mainboard that would forget the time but otherwise function perfectly fine. Dummy2K, if I remember correctly, suggested replacing the CMOS chip, but I never found one.Replace the Cmos chip - now there's a project for relatives in the Ham Radio game.

Thanks again

V...Ham radio game? Quote

Ham radio game?

Oops, terminology got to me again.  Not Ham Radio game as in pc or XBox game, meant it to convey Amateur Radio enthusiasts altho' some of the relatives concerned are professional electronics technicians.

V...Does it change after you do a cold boot in safe mode then shutdown for a 2nd cold boot in safe mode?
This is indeed a strange one. :-?Fed - I hadn't thought of trying that but did so with same result, date changed on each cold boot.   Also tried cold booting into Dos with same result.  BTW warm boot date does not change!!!

Yep, sure is an oddball...If your new battery wasn't connecting properly & you were ALSO running some sort of time synchronising program that corrects it from the net then that could account for it.
Are you sure of a positive connection of your battery and no time synch programs? Thanks Fed.

I think that because only the date setting goes haywire that the battery connection should (must) be fine. :-?  Can't find any indication of a large drain on the battery.  A cold boot just 30 seconds after a shut-down showed the changed date as did a cold boot after 1, 2 , 3, and 5 minute intervals, and overnight,  although all other settings remain stable.

The pc is not connected to the net so the time-synch question doesn't arise.

Raptor's suggestion is becoming more and more credible.  He said he has had a similar problem but with just the time affected.  Unfortunately, considering the age of the mobo, I doubt if the manufacturer would even respond to any query EXCEPT to SAY get a newer model.

Thanks again - I'll just have to accept a wierd date until either the mobo goes to mobo HEAVEN or I can source another.

V...What's got me thrown is that it's only the date & not the time that's changing. :-?
I used to have a computer with no battery at all, my kid broke the battery clip.
A cold boot would put both time & date out, but a cold boot after only a few seconds (5 secs) it would retain the settings.
It was because of the capacitors discharging slowly & keeping the bios alive long enough to retain the bios memory.
I really can't add anything to this, I'm stumped. :-/Your MBoard Manual

I could be off base here but i'm wondering if flashing the BIOS correctly would help.

I had a link years ago for an EPROM source but i have yet to find it....give me some time.

patio.  8-)Thanks Patio - I already have the manual but it doesn't give me any clues to fix the problem.

As for Eprom, I'm not sure I would want to get into reprogramming, my technical knowhow is probably not up to that.

I have 'resolved' the date problem by creating a .bat file which is called in Autoexec to remind me that the date has to be altered.  Not a cure but at least now I don't get the chance to forget...

As to the date problem...just ask the first person you see everyday "Hey what's todays date?"...

Have you scanned for viruses and spyware?

How has the problem happened?Ha ha.  But of course you are right.  I am just squeezing the last bit of life out of my poor old computer.
I do not know when it happened, I became aware of it a few months ago.  Perhaps when I loaded the Shaw Secure program - but I am not sure.Check your OE>Options>Security...
Is it set to Internet Zone & are you allowing it to open attachments?
BTW, clicking on links in emails is dangerous.Yes it is set to Internet Zone, and I am pretty sure all the SETTINGS are right.  It is more of an irritant than a huge problem.  Why shouldn't you open a link from email?
My problem at work is more serious because I cannot read any text at all in the emails, nor open attachments.    I had to reset my computer there to an earlier date because it was severely messed up.  I might have some sort of virus there, because we only have a free virus scanner.
Thanks for your suggestion.Hmm... be sure that the SENDER of the email with the links is on your safe list... if its not, the links shouldent work (for your own good, actualy) Quote

Because it is popular it should be made more safe before releasing it. Whatever way you put it, it's still Microsoft's fault.

Internet Explorer 6 for 98 / ME is not the same IE as it is on Windows 2000/XP..  Another good reason to use Firefox.

Solve : Loading Operating System on Twin Computer?

Does anyone have any idea how to CORRECTLY LOAD the operting system on the duet computer...one tower that runs two keyboards, two mice, two monitors, doing separate operations.  I have all the CDs, O/S, motherboard, and twin software, but no instructions. One OS cannot be RAN on 2 machines simultaenously...what are you trying to accomplish ? ?

patio.  8-)"The duet computer"?

:-?Actually, it is called a "Magic Twin".  It has one hard drive.  I don't understand how it works, but it does.  One SCHOOL in our district purchased some for their computer lab, so our school purchased 10 (for 20 workstations at a little more than half the cost).  If you do a search on google, you can find out more, but I have not been able to find out more about loading the operating system or trouble shooting issues.  They apparently are unable to handle the Windows automatic updates.  One came up with the "blue screen"...beginning dump of physical memory.  So I thought I would do a repair.  It is too different...Technical support is $75 an hour.I haven't got a clue, but I think it would be best to FIRST buy one computer when a new scheme is involved and test it. Now you're stuck with 10 PC's and very expensive technical support.

Which is strange, considering you're still under warranty?More Info

Interesting...But it looks like it definitely needs their Software to make WinXP work properly...i'm assuming it needs to be re-installed as well as the OS.

Solve : I need help with Netscape 7.1 browser?

Answer»

:-?Does ANYONE know how to prevent others (especially the kids) from deleting the history & block chat, im & e-mail with MySpace under the Netscape 7.1 browser? Our teenage kids have figured out that they can go on Netscape to get AROUND our parental controls. We aren't wanting to prevent them from accessing MySpace, but we do not want them to have a MySpace account. Also, they have been able to create e-mail accounts without our permission with Yahoo, etc. We have on the main computer IE, ATT browser & Netscape.  Parental controls have helped with these 4 issues on IE & ATT, but Netscape is not supported with the content & block features of IE.  The computer they log onto is a Gateway, Windows XP & DSL. I don't want to uninstall Netscape, because I use their feature of the master password to manage all our usernames & passwords to pay our bills online.I don't know for sure but I'm thinking you might be able to block the kids from using Netscape by setting up limited user account in Windows.  I know a limited user cannot install programs but, again, I'm not sure whether they can be blocked from using certain programs that were installed by an adminstrative user.  Perhaps you should see this: Applying the Principle of Least Privilege to User Accounts on Windows XP.

If they can not be blocked from using Netscape via a limited user account, then I think I would uninstall Netscape and figure out some other way to manage your passwords, using IE or another browser that does not CAUSE the same issue as Netscape.  And, put a password on the adminstrative account so that the kids can not logon as an administrative user and install software.  They must use a limited user account.Norman has got a virus scanner that can also be used as a parental control device. Obviously, it's security is much HIGHER than that of any STANDARD Windows setting or browser.

Solve : Msn messenger conversations?

Answer»

Without going into to much DETAIL just over a month ago I was involved in a car crash, the consequence of which is legal action (as i take it many of you will understand)

My question is this,

Does msn messenger store a hidden log of conversations after they are closed, as a CONVERSATION I had on msn a few DAYS after the accident WOULD be very valuable in court if i can find a way to retrieve it.

many thanks in advance

MattNot unless you have set the program to do so. All INSTANT messages are stored in RAM if not saved to a log (Must be set by the user) RAM is volatile, which means that once it's powered off, it forgets evertyhing and it can't be retrieved.

So you're out of luck unless you activated the log option. But perhaps the person you were speaking to has done so and you could ask them for the conversation log?

Solve : OE 6.0 files aren't in the identities folder?

Answer»

Hi,

A few weeks back my bf found 2 trojan horse viruses on my comp. He deleted the viruses and then took his own hard drive/motherboard, etc and gave it to me, with my old c (main) drive becoming my secondary. When he tried importing the outlook express files from my drive onto his, he couldn't find them in any folder -- he did a system search including hidden files and there was NOTHING. But he did find the address book. He then thought that maybe if he ran the operating system off my drive that somehow he could get them back -- when the computer restarted, the screen kept rolling and nothing would run, so he switched the main drive back to his. I have tried looking/searching everywhere for these files -- when he deleted the viruses could they have somehow deleted my o.e. files too? If so, is there any way to somehow recovery them??

Thanks Windows doesn't always comply when being placed in a new PC. Can you tell us the exact steps that have been taken with both HDD's?Hi,

This is what my bf has said about the work done on my comp. HOPEFULLY you'll understand since I don't

Computer 1 - Removing HDD and using it as a slave in new computer. I will
label this HDD-1
Computer 2 - I will label this systems primary drive HDD-2

1. Ran virus scan on Computer 1, cleared out viruses and spyware from HDD-1.
Dissassembled system, placed HDD-1 in Computer 2 as a slave.
2. Booted Computer two, checked BIOS settings, everything was fine. Booted
WinXp
3. Ran virus check again on both drives. Both came up clear.
4. Copied personal files from HDD-1, to HDD-2 (primary).
5. Ran Outlook Express from HDD-2, tried and failed importing contacts,
emails from HDD-1.
6. Tried to copy and paste HDD-1 Outlook files into HDD-2 Outlook folder.
Nothing.
7. Ran Windows Recovery.
8. Rebooted, everything running fine. Tried to import files again, no luck.
9. Rebooted with HDD-1 as master now, wouldnt boot. Kept rebooting half way
through sequence.
10. Removed HDD-2, leaving HDD-1 alone as master. STILL wouldnt boot.
11. Switched Drives back to original. Booted no problem.
12. Removed HDD-1, tried the same thing in another system. No luck booting
HDD-1 as master.

Thanks.
I'm a little confused  :-/...which for me is pretty normal    Are you looking for both Outlook (.PST) and OE (.dbx)?

Solve : Outlook 2002 issue?

Answer»

I am currently experiencing a problem with the way new mail is hitting my inbox. Mail is received via an Exchange 2003 server. New incoming mail won't appear automatically in my inbox. In order for it to appear some other action in Outlook needs to take PLACE first, such as clicking on another folder in the folder view, a toolbar BUTTON or even something as stupid as merely moving the scroll wheel on my mouse.

I have tried setting an automatic send / receive to occur EVERY two minutes, I have deleted and recreated the Outlook profile in the mail applet in control panel and  even re-installed Office XP Pro. None of these steps worked.

Help! :-?The send/recieve command might be too short. Try setting it at 10 minutes or so...

patio.  8-)Thanks for the reply. I probably haven't explained the problem very well. For other users in my office (who are also all using Outlook 2002) mail (particularly internal email) will show up in their inbox a short time after sending. These users do not have automatic send/receive enabled. This is just a step I tried because I was short on ideas.

I also TESTED the auto send receive function on its default setting of five minutes to no avail. All i want is for my newly received emails to show up in my inbox without having to manually provoke them, as it were.

Sorry if this doesn't make a great deal of sense.I suspect you have a problem with the MAPI subsystem.  This could be caused by many different things.  Has this ever worked correctly for you?  If so, can you go back to a restore point when everything was hunkydory?  If not, you may wish to consider a repair installation of Windows.

That is BS that they don't give you the OPTION to revert back to the old way.  The new way is terrible!!!! Wait 'til you see Office 2007!!!OpenOffice seems to do that as well. I never thought of it as being ABSENT..

Sure,   blame the schools.

Solve : MS Word - Grouped TXT boxes don't print?

Answer»

Using MS Word 2000.  If I group 2 or more text boxes together, the contents of those text boxes do not print.  This happens if I group the text box with an image also.  Particular image in question is in WMF format when inserted.

One of the text boxes is a black fill with white lettering.  It prints all black when grouped with another text box that is no fill with black lettering.

Actual document I am working with is one of the default templates accessible via....

File - New - Publications - Brochure

On top page far right column, I deleted the default image and text.  Added 2 images (Company logo and another clipart image)  Two Text boxes as described above.  One (black fill) simply has phone number in it sized at 20pt, the other (no fill) has the web address.  The one with the web address slightly overlaps on top of the one with the phone number.  The text doesn't overlap, just the lower tip of the box for formating purposes.

Again, when I group these two boxes or I group them with the images above them, it will not print the text, just the images.

When doing a print preview, it shows the text like it should print it just fine.

Any help in solving this issue is appreciated. One minor correction.

The black box didn't print the text, but the no fill box did print.

On another part though, a no fill box grouped with an image doesn't print. Are you using a laser printer by any chance? Quote

Are you using a laser printer by any chance?

Yes, HP Laserjet IV using the Laserjet III DRIVERS, I haven't tried with the laserjet IV drivers, they cause issues when printing anything that is even just a little complex.  That has something to do with WinXP sending the full document to the printer all in one shot and the printer doesn't have enough memory to handle it.  When we ran the printer off a Win2K machine, Win2K gave the printer only what it could handle and kept the rest in the spool until there was free memory and then sent the rest of the data.

Not sure why WinXP does that on the Laserjet IV drivers, but it doesn't do that on the laserjet III drivers.

Still trying to figure out why it WOULD matter when print preview shows it just fine.Update:

I've tried it on a HP Deskjet cheapy printer and it doesn't matter if it's laser or inkjet.  Same problem both ways.

I've FIXED one....

Found out I did have a fill on one section section I thought I didn't.  I guess it defaults to white fill instead of no fill.

If there is truely NO FILL, everything works hunky dory.  If there is any fill, once I group a text box with anything else, it doesn't print what is in the text box.  Although it does show correctly in print preview.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Sent private message giving link to file...

Posting other information here for benefit of others.

I didn't see a need to do a repair since it does the same thing on all 7 computers and 4 different printers.  2 printers being the same Laserjet IV, one being an Inkjet, also HP, and the last a photo printer.  All doing the same thing.   Hmmm. (scratching head) I wounder if it could be an HP thing.  All the printers here are HP.  I wouldn't think so, but hey, ya never know.
Okay.

I don't have an HP to test here, but like you, I think it's unlikely to be the CULPRIT.  More likely is that you may have hit a Word 2000 bug.  I printed the page in question on a Brother laser printer, from Word 2003, and it printed correctly.  I don't have a 2000 installation to test this with.

You could always just leave the boxes ungrouped, annoying though it may be that the problem can't be fixed. Quote

Thats what I figured, just looking for clarification.  Right now just grouping to move as a group then ungroup them again when in place.  UGH!You could just hold down shift and use the select tool to select both boxes at once...?

Incidentally, have you installed all the Word 2000 SERVICE packs?

Solve : songlist in Multimedia Builder?

Answer»

Salam all,

I am trying to make my own mp3 player using Multimedia Builder 4.9.6a ..I am using a bitamp
of my own that includes my buttons and songlist menu..i am having a problem with the songlist.
As in MMB ,you must include their songlist that has no transparensy OPTION ..I mean it is
impossible to blend the list with the background nicely..It has a color of its own that will
ruin the look of the mp3 player..is there anyway to create the list of the songs(i need only
the name of the song to appear in the desired list box and if possible ,to scroll horizontaly along the two borders of the list) WITHOUT messing the whole image..

thanksI am not sure what you mean, because I've never seen this particular piece of software, but most media players allow you to choose what skin you want to use. Check their homepage for instructions.there is nothing in their homepage Raptor"obviously"..i think i explained my point well...i want the name of the songs to appear in a certain place like in winamp list and the song that is playing,i want it scrolling along the list..like in winamp,it has a playlist in which the names of the songs appears in,my player has this list and i just want it to act the same as winamp..?? Can't help you there. If this piece of software doesn't do it, just use WinAmp? Solve : Print a list of Personal Folders in Outlook?

Answer»

Is there a way to print a list of all the Personal Folders/Subfolders you have in Outlook?

Thanks for your help~Not that I know of.  Why not just open Outlook and do a Print-Screen?

Alan <><  Print Directory from the link below...

http://www.karenware.com/powertools/powertools.asp

Kudos to Karen !

patio.  8-)I think the Print Directory UTILITY from KarenWare.com might not work for Outlook's internal folders. Can you locate them via Windows Explorer?  I have not found them.  That's why I'm thinking it may not work. The only way to find out is to try it...i don't use Outlook...never will.

patio.  8-)Thanks very much to all- I did think of a print screen- just looking for an easier way- no- you can't see them in Windows Explorer- tried with a SIMILAR product- FolderScavenger- didn't work- oh well- thanks again for trying to help-
Did you happen to try the program i suggested ? ?

patio.  8-)I did not try it- after reading the description of what the Print Directory utility does (the only thing that looked applicable) it does the same thing as the FolderScavenger I tried- as Soybean said- since you cannot locate the folders within Outlook via Windows Explorer Karen's will not be able to find/print them. Again- thanks for your EFFORTS though- nice to know about Karen's- have a great evening~I'm confused again...it doesn't take much.
Why can't you find the sub-folders in Outlook thru Explorer ? ?
Do you have show hidden files checked ? ?
What directory would you like to print the contents of exactly ? ?

patio.  8-)Maybe I can explain it this way-  you've set up folders within the email program you use to organize it, right? For example, Project X, Project Y, Project Z- the folders you move messages into that you want to keep- can you find these folders in Explorer?I'm sure you can't find them with Explorer.  They are embedded in an "Office Data File" which contains them.  In my system with Win XP installed on partition F, my Outlook files are located at F:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook.  The main file appears to be simply named Outlook.  There's also a file called "mailbox", which is also an "Office Data File" file type.  I also see files named archive and backup there; they are also Office Data Files.

I can't open them from Explorer.  Via a Command Prompt window, I see that full names: Outlook.pst and mailbox.PAB.  Outlook.pst is about 108MB in size; mailbox.PAB, about 265KB.Right- it's basically the .pst file that HOLDS these folders- Windows Explorer can't open a file so that you can see the folders in the file- that's why this program won't work to get a list of these folders!   I knew there was a good reason i don't use Outlook... Quote

I knew there was a good reason i don't use Outlook...

You can do this with Visual Basic.

The following is a fairly rough-and-ready solution that will create a folder tree for email folders and plonk the results in a new note.  Customise to suit your needs.  You should only run the "ListFolders" procedure.  Give it time to run - it may appear to have hung for a bit if you have a lot of folders.

Code: [Select]Sub ListFolders()

Dim lfApp As Outlook.Application
Dim lfNote As Outlook.NoteItem
Dim lfNameSpace As Outlook.NameSpace
Dim counter As Integer
Dim newline As String

newline = Chr(13)

Set lfApp = CreateObject("Outlook.Application")
Set lfNote = lfApp.CreateItem(olNoteItem)
Set lfNameSpace = lfApp.GetNamespace("MAPI")

'lfNote.Body = "test"

For counter = 1 To lfNameSpace.Folders.count

  lfNote.Body = lfNote.Body + lfNameSpace.Folders.Item(counter).Name + newline
  If lfNameSpace.Folders.Item(counter).Folders.count > 1 Then
    ListSubFolders lfNameSpace.Folders.Item(counter).Folders, lfNote, 1
  End If

Next

' Show note
lfNote.Display

End Sub

Function ListSubFolders(lsFolders As Outlook.Folders, lfNote As Outlook.NoteItem, depth As Integer)

Dim counter As Integer
Dim newline As String

newline = Chr(13)
For counter = 1 To lsFolders.count

  lfNote.Body = lfNote.Body + "|" + String(depth, "-") + lsFolders.Item(counter).Name + newline

  If lsFolders.Item(counter).Folders.count > 1 Then

    ListSubFolders lsFolders.Item(counter).Folders, lfNote, depth + 1

  End If

Next

End Function
Gives output like:

Solve : compressing mp3's?

Answer»

i need to KNOW how to compress mp3's to make them have a smaller file size. what program can do this? Quote

Check out dBpowerAMP Music Converter.
It can convert between many different audio formats while preserving ID Tags.
The latest version (v11.5) is shareware (30-day trial, $14.00 to buy) but you can still download the last freeware version (v10.0) from here.
The lower the bitrate, the smaller the filesize.MP3's as far as i know cannot be compressed too much more than they already are...although what jph says is true all you would be accomplishing with this METHOD is degrading the original CONTENT...

patio.  8-)ALRIGHT i guess i will have to crap up the songs a little bit. oh well, 10mb's for a 5min. song is rediculus. This is one reason why HDD's are huge these days...and relatively inexpensive.

Burners as well...

Solve : a vertical design for a letterhead in Word??

Answer»

I have a vertical design that I want to use to make a letterhead in Word. I don't want it to be editable so when someone types in their letter, they cannot move it or delete it. The header/footer OPTION only allows at top and at bottom horizontally! Can the footer be made vertical for EXAMPLE? Or another solution? Thanks!

With the header panel open, click on Insert (MAIN menu), Text Box, and enter text vertically in the Text Box.  Will that WORK?

Alternatively, you might create a image with Paint containing vertical text, and then insert it into your header.Although the header and footer are at the top/bottom of the page, you can insert an image or text box into a header or footer, that appears ANYWHERE on the page.  Once you've got it where you want it, exit the header/footer view and then adjust the document's margins to suit.
