Solve : Disabling 'single click editing' in Outlook?

Answer»

I got asked a very interesting question today.

In outlook, in the calander view when you single click an appointment(from NOTHING selected), and wait one second, it automatically will try to EDIT the subject.

See attached Picture

How do you stop this?

Cheers

-EddieWhat other reason would there be to click on it other than edit it?Yes, it does defy the "once to select, twice to edit" rubric, doesn't it?  Outlook is a bit of a law unto itself.  But in spite of all that, it's a HECK of a program and one of the very few Microsoft offerings that I can bring myself to praise.

If you don't want to go into edit mode, you need two operations instead of the one.  First click, then hit ESC on your keyboard.  Sorry about that!  But it'll come automatically, soon enough.  I figured out last night, that if you click that little blue strip, then it wont edit, just select.

Thanks for your replies guys, i think I like this FORUM!!This is what I mean:Ah yes.  I knew that...

I've TRIED for awhile...
Ending up having to Right-Click > Open Folder to open everything. Quote

Try a system restore a few days earlier.

It probably can be fixed, but isn't it just easier to try this first? Can you describe what he did, step by step, that lead to the problem?

Solve : Windows ME backup?

Answer»

I've got a computer with windows ME on it but I don't have the original disks.  I'd like to back up the operating system with the CD burner or obtain the original disks as a backup.  Help!!How could we help you obtain the original disks?  We know nothing about how you acquired that computer.

Acronis TrueImage or NORTON Ghost would allow you to create a backup of your OS; this backup could be used to restore your system if necessary.  However, I do not know if that can be done by burning a CD.  Since Acronis TrueImage and Norton Ghost create a mirror image of the entire drive, that's not likely to fit on a CD.  Such backups are usually created on a separate partition or separate hard drive. It will however fit on a DVD burner...this will not create a WinME original disk as soybean stated but a complete image of your system as it sits today...what happened to your originals ? ?

Well...
When I broke into the pentagon and stole this computer, it was broad daylight so there were a lot of people around.  And after I cut the steel cable holding it to the desk with my pocket blowtorch, I had to CARRY it down the hall.  And as I was slowly and inconspicuously carrying it down the hall with both hands,  the button holding up my pants popped off and my pants dropped to the FLOOR.  And wouldn't you know it about that time, ten women had just finished lunch and walked around the corner.  When they saw me holding the computer with my pants around my ankles, they all screamed and pushed an alarm.  So I ditched my pants (good thing my neon purple thong was still in good shape) and MADE a run for it.  And a hail of bullets and a high speed police chace later, I made it home.  But the disks were still in my pants back at the pentagon.

Just kidding.

A guy bought a new computer and gave me his old one.  The original disks (and him too) are long gone.  I've got the product CODE if that helps.Good explanation there on the history of your acquiring that computer.  LOL

The product code is irrelevant in this situtation.  I think we've given you appropriate advice, so I don't what more we can add.  Now, you need to plan an acquiring some software (Acronis TrueImage or Norton Ghost).  Just be careful you don't get caught with your pants down.   However if the operating system has problems, you will only be backing those up as well. In the absence of a legal Windows CD you are stuck with what you have, which includes the debris of how many years of installs, uninstalls, malware, crappola, etc.

Solve : E-mail Is Getting Blocked?

Answer»

There is a particular user I am WORKING with who cannot receive Excel attachments which include macros. Below is some more information on the topic:

The user can receive excel attachments without macros.

The user is in same security group for outside e-mail as other users which can receive excel files with macros.

I have confirmed that the local machine firewall is disabled.

I even tried setting the Excel macro security to low.

Added the Level1Remove registry entry for .xls;.exe;.vbs

I added the user as a delegate. When I viewed my inbox under her login the e-mail was viewable. I was able to receive the e-mail, however, I was required to save the attachment before it could be viewed. (Level2)?

Currently using Exchange 2k3 and Outlook 2k3

All Office updates are current.

Any suggestions on how to get this type of file through to these users?

Let me know if more information is required.

TIAZip the file first, then send it.

Are these users CONNECTED to Exchange, by any chance?Yes they are.  2k3Could be security settings on Exchange; attachments can be stripped by filename extension.  But that probably would not discriminate against a particular user...  One of the Outlook service packs introduced fairly aggresive policies with regard to attachments, but again if all Outlook installations are patched to the same level, you wouldn't expect differing behaviour.  I wonder if the rogue PC has a particular virus checker installed...?

Anyway, try the zip method; should get through, unless it is indeed a virus checker problem. That is not something that I have tried yet.  I will give both a try.  I will let you know what the outcome is.

Thanks for the information.Okay.  Best of luck. There is no virus checker on that pc - I checked this myself.
I SENT an email with a .zip file as the attachment - This email was not received.

I have some more info for you.

There are a few users here which use a different domain name in their email address.  I have recently checked with the other users who use this same domain name and they have the same problem.

This company uses a single domain with one exchange 2k3 server with outlook 2k3 email client.

The problem may rest in the domain name and for some reason is blocking the emails from being received.  Any suggestions on how to look into this further?  Security settings for individual domain names?

ThanksAre you using the same ISP for both domains?  Are you retrieving email from a smart host, or do the MX records for those domains point directly to your mail server?Yes, it is a T1 line.
We are not using a smart host.  All points to the exchange server.I don't currently have an Exchange machine to play with so here are my off-the-cuff thoughts:

 • check the Exchange settings for the domain (OBVIOUSLY)
 • trawl through the GPE on the server
 • have a look at >this article<
 • check the settings for your server-side antivirus
There is nothing in the settings which lead me to believe that these emails would be getting blocked.

I have not looked through the GPE for the server yet.  This is something that I plan to do.

I am familiar with this article.  This did not solve my problem.

Antivirus is ok.

It has to be a setting some where.  I just have to find it.

Thanks again for the suggestions.  I am still working on it.  I will let you know what the outcome is.
Rob, I wanted to update you on my situation since you took so much time to help me out.  I was able to resolve the problem.  You were correct in asking if we were using a smart host.  We were just not knowingly.  About nine months to a year ago we were using a smart host.  By the time I was hired everything had already been switched to an exchange environment and the smart host service was canceled.  However, that service was cancelled for this location but not for our other location, the location where we were having these problems at.

I noticed that all email going to that location had the same IP address for the sender.  I made a phone call to the host and he confirmed that he was still routing email for that location only.  So that service is now canceled.  It took about a week for the IPs for the senders to begin changing.  No more problems.  Thanks again for your time. Thanks so much for posting back.  Glad you got it sorted.  Some ISPs try to be a little too helpful...

Solve : Copy protection of CD using software?

Answer»

This is regarding copy protection of CDs USING software methods (NOT by making physical marks/holes on CD):

I use WINDOWS XP with Nero-6. I want to create copy-protected CDs.

(1) Is there any other software, or other version of Nero itself, which has this feature?

(2) If not, is there any (third party) add-on module which makes this feature available in Nero or Windows-XP?

(3) Copy-prevented CDs have dummy file-names with very large size in their directory. I UNDERSTAND that this is what prevents the copying. But, I wonder why the copying software tries to interpret the directory information instead of reading the CD track-by-track, like copying a FLOPPY disk. Can you throw some light on this technique employed in copy PROTECTING a CD? How it works?I can't but Google can: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=copy+protecting+a+CD&btnG=Google+Search Quote

I want to create copy-protected CDs.

Does this mean you want to create new CD of your own design, which is protected against copying? Quote

Solve : Web Server Software?

Answer»

Quick query.

What web server software would people recommend?  I've done a fair bit of web programming on pretty much most of the main platforms, but as FAR as back-office work, I have only ever set MS IIS 5 up.

I am thinking of doing a little freelance work again, but have no web server to test any applications that I write.  HENCE the question.  What is easy to set up, FAIRLY secure (i.e. doesn't cause my firewall to twitch everytime SOMETHING happens), FREE etc. etc. ??  I looked at Apache, but the Apache site that I visited said that there may be firewall issues after installation.

Ta v. much.

MFirewall issues with Apache?  Nah.

Apache is definitely your best choice for several reasons:

 • small memory footprint
 • low processor utilisation, whether the site is loaded or not
 • cost
 • stability
 • security
 • compatibility
You might be best grabbing a WAMP distribution (Windows/Apache/MySQL/PHP) that would be comparatively easy to install.  Installing Apache can be tricky at times, but is always worth the effort.

The only firewall issue I can think of is that you might need to set up port forwarding on your router if you want to allow external access to the web site.

I wouldn't recommend going back to IIS 5 - not when Apache is so much better.  IIS 6 is pretty good, but you may not have access to it.

You can run ASP code on Apache servers, but I would recommend making the (relatively easy) transition to PHP.  Code PROCESSING is much MUCH quicker, and because PHP is so widespread, there are plenty of script libraries out there.  Plus one of your best friends happens to have a fair amount of PHP experience.

Oh - that's another reason to install Apache too!

PS  Where in the blazes are you going to find time for this freelance work?!

Solve : fax modem?

Answer»

I have a laptop with an inbuilt fax modem. I deleted the fax files I believe when I was in the Control Panel removing / ADDING windown COMPONENT. I checked on the Fax box hoping to restore the fax function. THen it asked me to insert  XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 CD. I got this laptop from someone and I was not given the Pack 2 CD - Is there other way I can GET the fax modem to work? are there other ways to get teh fax files from somewhere.. ANy suggestions would be appreciated thank you kindlyHow old is the laptop?  What brand?  Do you have any data on it yet?  It would be helpful if you can give us more information.

Alan <><

Hello

thanks for trying to help. I have an Acer laptop (Aspire 3500 1.4 GHZ - Aspire 3502NLC1 I got it December of last year.

I'm not sure about Acer, but they may have a partition that has all the files to do a complete install on the existing hard drive.  When you go into My Computer do you see C:\ & D:\, or just C:\?

Try doing a system restore prior to the date you removed the fax files.  Go to Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore & choose a restore point.

Another option is tf it does have that D:\ partition, reboot the computer, look for something on the screen that allows you to REINSTALL Windows (like F2 ,F12 or something) and do a restore.

Alan <><  My laptop has two drives C (hard drive) and D (i.e. DVD/CD drive).  I will one of the options you mentioned. ThanksAn Acer comes with a set of restore CD's. You can not install individual files from these. If you do not have the 3-5 CD set you cannot reinstall Windows either.

Solve : Media players fighting?

Answer»

Perhaps I should really know better, but everything I've tried so far has no effect. Whenever I try to play mpegs or similar files on my system, the whole thing locks up on me, EVEN the mouse. It seems to me that WMP and Creatives MEDIA player are both trying to play the file at the same time.
Short of uninstalling WMP, is there a way of making Creative the DEFAULT media player, or disabling WMP?  Right-click the file you want to open, choose 'Open with', then 'Choose Program'.  Scroll down to the Creative icon, click it, then just below all your choices you MAY see a box that SAYS "Always use this program to open these files" and put a tick in that box.

Alan <><  Cheers for that. Tried it, but both players still fire up. same thing also happens when I try to view "video clips" on the internet. Any more IDEAS? Please?Fire up Windows Explorer.  Tools-->Folder Options-->File types.  Have a look in that list.  Be careful.  Thanks Rob. Had a look, altered a few settings, (I was careful too). Result is still the same though.
Looks like i'll just have to shoot WMP.   :-/I'll loan you my .357 magnum!!

Alan <><  Uninstall both programs.  Install your least favourite media player first, then install the other - pay close attention to the file associations dialogues.

Solve : hijack this question...?

Answer»

are BOTH these entries legitimate?im pretty sure the top one is.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\Rundll32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\RUNDLL32.EXE

i mean ive heard about viruses that have a similiar name to thwart suspicion.

BTW, i had a minor problem with not being able to connect to the internet, so i looked for my network adapter and checked out its properties. turns out i was recieving packets while i was unable to connect using fire fox or IE. why is that? That is just 2 entries to load the 1 file, you can remove 1 of those entries.
Remember, it is impossible to have 2 FILES of the same name in the same location.

Receiving packets when you shouldn't be? That could be a problem, are you sure there are no auto update things running that you are unaware of?i only have 15 programs that Zone Alarm will allow internet access without me confirming it. everything else has to ask me for internet access.

i honestly can NOT think of ANY program that could access the internet without me knowing. also, even if they did somehow get around Zone Alarm, how could they recieve packets while i could not use an internet browser?heres my HIJACK THIS log...

Are you still unable to open a browser?-mystery packets stopped
-i was always able to open a browser, i just could not connect.

i did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING between the time i was aware of recieving packets (the zone alarm internet monitor was showing me as recieveing packets) and when i was finally able to connect to the internet. i do believe when the packets stopped i was able to connect, but i am not certain.

recent events
- i set up a home network between my comp and my friends comp (for sharing files). i was NOT connected to the network at the time i was recieving packets, his comp wasnt even at my house at the time.

i was able to get a patch for BF2 off his comp, however he was not allowed to connect to my comp (for reasons unknown). and since then, this problem has happened AND windows media player 10 displays the following pop-up...

Solve : DVD drive doesn't recognize mini dvd!?

Answer»

Greetings everyone,
I'm having problems recording.  I try to copy a mini dvd-r disc from my "D" drive (Samsung DVD-ROM) onto a regular size DVD-R disc (E drive is NEC DVDRW DL) but my D drive doesn't recognize the mini dvd.  The D drive opens up with a message informing me to place the disc to be copied into the drive!
Can anyone help me figure out this PROBLEM?  I've copied the same kind of discs before with no problem but, it seems that after a couple of months with the upgraded software this problem has occured.
The software I use is Roxio Easy Media Creator 8.  COULD it possibly be a physical problem with the drive?  What can I do?
Thanks  Usea q-tip and alcohol (not the consumable variety ) and clean the laser lens...Would that be Denatured Alcohol (available at any pharmacy)? That's the stuff ! !

patio.    8-)Thanks, I will try that.  Gotta run to a BBQ right now but will try it tomorrow.  I'm a bit skeptical though.
Will let you know if it works.
Well, cleaning the drive with rubbing alcohol did not work.  I finally contacted DELL support  and they have sent me PROCEDURES to deal with this problem.  I will try out what they suggest.  I'm not SURE if I should POST their solution here if it works?Sure, go ahead and post it.  We'd like to know whether they provided a solution to the problem and what was it they advised you to do.Well, I tried all the suggested solutions  from Dell (too many to describe) and none worked.  We concluded that there was something physically wrong with the drive and they will be sending someone over to switch out the old drive.  I'm so glad I got the extended warranty for 3 years, which I rarely do.
At least they were very prompt in responding; always within 24 hours

Solve : Nero and Sonic ??

Answer»

Hello everyone: Would there be a compatability issue if I downloaded NERO on my system
which allready has Sonic? In my mind I can't SEE anything wrong but my first wife
and my third couldn't get along so I thought I would ask the field for advice, the reason
I want Nero is because of the utility "Nero Speed" which Sonic doesn't offer a utility like
this, and after Google searches for "Verify Blank DVD and CD Media" the PICKINGS are few and
windows and HP don't offer such a utility.

As always Thanks for any advice..
I forgot to say it's the dvd-cd software Suite
also I'am using a HP a1314n media edition with xp-proI'm using Nero v6.3.1.18 and Roxio Easy Media Creator 7 Basic Edition and don't have any problems with them stepping on eachothers toes.

Alan <><  In general burning programs hate each other...find one you like and stick with it.

ale i'm suprised it works for you...when i had both it caused nothing but havoc.

patio.   8-)Patio,

I've had both of them on my W2kPro machine for at least a year, using Nero one time then Roxio the next and they've never given me a lick of problems

Solve : Setting up a VPN connection?

Answer»

Can anyone tell me how to set a VPN ConnectionThere's this ONE and this this one, the FIRST two of 9m from Google.

Good luckDusty gave you a couple of good places to start.

VPNs usually want a static IP so they can consistently connect to the same place EVERY time.  Do you have static IPs on each computer?  If not you MIGHT look into Hamachi (http://forums.hamachi.cc/) or RUN DDNS.

Solve : Microsoft Publisher Page Numbers?

Answer»

I have my master pages set up to put page numbers on all the pages of my
publication. However, after the 9th page the numbers stop. They are still set
up on Master Page A and Master Page B but they do not appear on any
subsequent page after page 9. Does anyone know how to fix this?
I'm not very familiar with Publisher but I know it can be used for many types of publications.  I think it might help if you state what type you're talking about.I am creating a new Parts Price List for my company. It's was just a blank FULL page publication for print. Hope that HELPS because I don't know ANYthing about Publisher except what I have managed to teach myself over the last few days.I honestly haven't used Publisher ENOUGH to be able to advise on using Publisher this way.  I've used it some for business cards and a little for greeting cards.  That's about it.  Hopefully, someone who is more familiar with it will come along.

I do wonder why you're using Publisher for this purpose.  If you have Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, and Access are all potential applications for this, depending on which you're most familiar with.  Actually, a parts list suggests a database application, which would be Access.  Excel could also be used and would allow sorting on part number or other fields.  Sorry to have confused you. The Parts Price List is a publication that we print in house and send to our customers. We have our Catalogs and General Price List professionally done, but we do the parts price list in house, designed, printed, bound....everything.It still sounds rather cumbersome to me.  Word, Excel, and Access all allow a lot of formatting for printed publications.  What features are you using in Publisher that make it the preferred application for this purpose?  Borders AROUND each page, corporate logo at the top of the page, etc.?

How do you get the parts price data into Publisher?  Copy and Paste?  From what?

Is the final publication on 8 1/2 x 11 paper or something else?  How is it "bound"?Copy and paste from Excel spreadsheets. It's being done this way because that's how it's "always been done" this company doesn't allow for a whole lot of innovation, or independant thinking for that matter. I'm using Publisher because that's the way they've always done it.

The final publication is 8.5"x11" and it's bound with the little plastic circle things that use the binding machine thingy (like my termanolgy?) that's all I can TELL you about it.Sounds like a fault with Publisher.  What version are you using?

I agree absolutely with soybean by the way.  You might find using Word is easier and produces better results.

Solve : Looking For A Good ISO file Reader?

Answer»

Have anyone intro some software ...
i found a ISO READER but...
it run very slow .... on overnight still not yet finish ...

Don't know from personal experience but I found this download site which may have what you need: iso viewer free at Free Downloads CenterISOBuster....the best and free.

patio.    8-)I found a cool little program that actually EMULATE a cd-rom drive on your computer and runs the iso. in my computer it looks as if you have another cd-rom drive... http://www.softpedia.com/get/CD-DVD-Tools/Virtual-CD-DVD-Rom/Virtual-CDROM-Control-Panel.shtml I googled the LINK for you (how sweet)  you will have to read the readme file it takes some manual instalation very simple though... dont know if this is what you need though...Still not SURE if your trying to open it on a computer or use it as an iso... I use a program called Universal Extractor. It does everything some of the time... its for extracting install files so you dont have to install them but doesnt allways work. However i did find out it etracts .iso probably .img and has never failed me yet... plus it extracts all zip, 7ZIP, .sys ... very simple to use I just drag the file I want to open to the archive to extract and the default folder is usualy perfect for me... http://www.legroom.net/modules.php?op=modload&name=Open_Source&file=index&page=software&app=uniextract

No need to install unless you want to theres 3 different downloads

(I should get benie points for googleing stuff like this...)" It does everything some of the time "

What the heck does that mean ? ?

patio.   8-)Well it does just about anything as far as extracting different files. the only time it hasn't worked for me is for some install files. more than it works on. it allways works on windows installer programs or something. but iso 7zip rar anything else it works great it is an extractor so it no help for compressing the files back...

Solve : Outlook sends multiple copies to each addressee?

Answer»

Hi, when I send an email from Outlook 2003 to more than one person, each person receives the same number of copies as there are people on the distribution list. i.e., if there are 8 addressees, then each addressee receives the message 8 times into their inbox.

Why is this happening and how do I stop it? - it causes great embarassment as it is not professional!

Help would be appreciated.

SkolWhat method are you using to send the email to multiple recipients?  Have you spoken to your ISP about this problem (SINCE it could conceivably be at their end)?I'm sending them through outlook. It doesn't seem to make any difference whether the addressees are in the "to" section, or the "cc" section.

My isp is BTInternet/Yahoo. I have reported the problem to them, and was told it was an outlook issue, in their opinion, and that they couldn't help.

I have two accounts on Outlook - my personal BTinternet one and my work one (which is a web-based Dutch isp). the outgoing server for both is the BTinternet one. While the Dutch isp is responsible for my incoming mail, it cannot influence my outgoing mail, beacuse of this fact, so I don't think it is them.

It is actually only my parent company in holland that complain about this problem (that i seem to be causing), so I'm not sure whether other people/companies are also affected. I will try to send something to different groups on both accounts to see if that makes any difference, as I suspect that would be one of your next SUGGESTIONS!Ok, further to my last reply, I have SENT test messages on both my accounts to different groups of people and they all replied that they only received one COPY. Therefore, it seems that my Dutch parent company is the only one experiencing this problem. Can I safely assume it is some setting at their end, and if so, any IDEAS what could be causing it?It would not be a setting on their end in other words i cannot set my e-mail client to request "send me 2 copies of everything"...

Check the recipient list settings on the work account on your end.

patio.   8-)Hi there

Are you running trend or pc-cillin anti-virus by any chance?

Steve Quote

it seems that my Dutch parent company is the only one experiencing this problem. Can I safely assume it is some setting at their end, and if so, any ideas what could be causing it?
It sounds likely that it's at their end.  I would suspect a misconfigured email server.  Does your parent company have an I.T. department?  Do you know if they run their own email server?

Alternatively, it might be a problem with the way the company downloads emails from the ISP.  I'd need a bit more detailed information in order to advise more fully. Thanks for all the replies! To answer each one in order:

1. How do I alter recipient list settings? I cannot seem to find any option for this.
2. No, I am not running trend or pc-cilin.
3. They do run their own email server. I have thrown the problem back to the Dutch for the moment, for them to investigate. The conundrum is that they only get the problem from me and as far as I can test, I only have this problem when sending to them!

I will report back shortly, hopefully with a bit more info.

Solve : How to delete this in Outlook 2000??

Answer»

After I have open someone's INBOX, how do I delete it (as shown in ATTACHMENT)? Thanks. Is this a folder managed by EXCHANGE?  Usually you'll have a context menu if you right click on the Inbox in your folder TREE.  You can close it from there.  ALTERNATIVELY remove the account from your email accounts list.I'm sorry. Not really understand.

Anyway, this is in my Outlook 2000. Example, A gave me the access to read his Inbox and I open his inbox by File>Open>Other User's Folder (as shown in my attachment). But, how do I delete this off? I can't right click to delete it.You could download CCleaner and run it.  I believe it will remove those items.  But, keep in mind it will do the same for Word, Excel, etc.  Tried but doesn't work. Any other solution? Thanks

Solve : NTSC v. PAL when playing a DVD on a reg PC?

Sorry if this is in the wrong section... I'm not quite sure if this fits here...

And I also have to say I've asked a few questions on this forum before and you guys really help... you rock!  most PC dvd players can switch between ntsc and pal, however some have a inbuilt counter that only lets you switch a certain number of times

the is no differnce in the hardwareWhy would they limit the number of times you switch? I mean you bought the DVD-player to play DVD's. Quote

Solve : Prevent strong language around my computer?

Answer»

Can an MS Word page be manipulated to WYSIWYG on screen. Even applying the help suggestions (say ensuring I am in 'normal' mode), whether in 'document-build' mode or in print preview, it doesn't give me 1:1, regardless of what scale setting I apply - the proportions of the page are always wrong. It prints OK, but I want to see what I get before I print.
Is a 1:1 image preview unobtainable in MS Word?
Thanks
[XP & latest edition of MS Word].Your post is a puzzling one.  In Preview, I DEFINITELY see exactly what actually prints.  Where are you getting the "proportion" concept, here?  That word appears no where in the print preview or print commands, as far as I can tell.

And, where do you see "'document-build'" mode?  At the lower left corner of the Word window, you have small icons representing Normal View, WEB LAYOUT View, Print Layout View, Outline View, and Reading Layout, but no  "'document-build'" view.
Mr Soybean specialist, the proportions selected for paper size are not obtainable on screen, only on the final print.
Maybe the screen is not intended to accurately represent the selected format of the document, or perhaps its is  -I would think it should be. What I mean is that a selected document page size of 5.5x8.5 inches appears on the screen as a DISTORTED 5.5x9. I would like to be able to (if necessary) to adjust the scale to see 5.5x8.5. Doing reams of test prints does not cut it for me.
ThanksSo your problem is that you can get one dimension (say, width) right (e.g. using the zoom function) but not the other?  The problem you have here is that Word can be aware of screen resolution, but not of the physical characteristics of your monitor.  Your monitor probably has width and height controls.  I suggest you cut out a 5x9 (or whatever) piece of paper; get one dimension right using Word's zoom function (holding the piece of paper against the screen) then get the other dimension right using the height/width adjustment on your monitor.

Caveats:

Word is not a professional grade publishing layout package.  Sizes reported in Word may be close to accurate, but they are not precise.

Unless you are a professional printer, you will probably not be using an accurate printer.  The biggest problem is page feeding; most printers skew the page even if it's just a little, or FEED the page fractionally more/less each time.

If you need precision results, you have to use precision tools.

PS  I very much enjoyed the title to this thread.  Thank you M'sieur.

Solve : Failure to deliver messages.?

Answer»
Hello everyone.

Lately when I chat with my girlfriend on WINDOWS Live Messenger we don't get 80% of each others messages, and we don't get noticed about it. This brings us a lot of confusion (she thinks I don't reply at crucial moments etc. or don't care).

//Symptoms:
-80% of the messages don't get delivered, we don't get noticed, causing confusion.
-Her offline status appears on my side 10 to 20 minutes after she logged off, more confusion.
-It happens a lot when she's online, that it shows offline on my side (and no, this is not her BLOCKING me or anything, we both know that), which makes her sad thinking I'm not replying to her (I am, but she's appearing offline). Then after she re-logs on, I can see her online status properly.
-I tried troubleshooting by telling her to go on IRC with me, but same symptom of not delivered messages, not warned. mIRC showed that she had constant Ping Timeouts.

-today I chat with my friend on Windows Live Messenger and I get the "2 messages not delivered - 1 delivered" symptom. At least this time it shows that the messages don't get delivered. But, still a problem. Had this problem before in the past.

//My Configuration
-I got a simple desktop firewall, McAfee 7 with latest updates
-Windows Firewall is Off
-Simple desktop PC with Ethernet NIC, and a T1 half duplex cable connection, Motorola modem
-ISP: telenet
-I have Hamachi installed recently (shows as seperate connection in "Network Connections" (Hamachi is a VPN tool))

//Her Configuration (which I think is the problem)
-xDSL modem and Ethernet NIC
-DHCP router (any PC/laptop can plugin and get directly internet)
-relatively new laptop (maybe with a WLAN connection inside)
-Desktop PC (she chats on her laptop though)
-She lives in a student buidling where they have "free shared internet",
which is probably one shared connection over the whole building (causing lag and timeouts?). Everyone is connected to each other (traffic overload -> packet loss?)

//Troubleshooting
-I tried mIRC with her, didn't help much
-Tried going from MSN Messenger 7.5 to 8.0 (Live)
-Could spyware malware be causing this problem? Already did a fresh updated scan on ad/spyware yesterday with Spybot and Adaware.
-Today someone told me he had the exact same syndrome at the exact same time (warnings about non-delivered msgs on msn messenger)

//What do I think?
-I think the warnings-part  might be SERVER sided (MSN servers?)
-I think the NON-warnings part is most probably her side, as she is getting timeouts (packet loss?)
-Most probably her side as she has a shared connection over many students in one building

What could I do to troubleshoot this?
It's really bringing us trouble..

Many thanks for your attention.
Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

Treval

p.s.: Strange..right now I'm getting "a network cable is unplugged" message..*censored*.."limited or no connectivity" message (MSN servers unstable or my ISP..? Perhaps IP renewing problem from my ISP's DNS server..don't know..) Great..I can't connect to anything anymore -copy pastes this and posts after reboot-
Is it just with her you have the problem, or your other CONTACTS? And same question to her. SOMETIMES this happens to me, but not to this extent. I have a few different messenger programs and if one is playing up, I switch to the other for a while. That might be a temperary solution? As far as I know the network cable is unplugged means just that, rather than an ISP problem but I could be wrong. Do you get connection problems with other programs?Have you tried calling her on the phone to let her know you care ? ? ?

The old HD was running win2000 and was getting kinda wierd which brought on the de-frag.  I googled aroud and tried all of the FIXES to get the HD to boot to 2000 but to no avail.  I have managed to make this work in the past by accident but I need to know how to do it now for real this time!!

I just want to be able to do a NORMAL boot from the new HD in XP (with the un-bootable HD attached) and still get to the old files (via explorer) to save some of files that I can't replace!

Thanks :-?If the old drive has been slaved and the system booted from the new drive and you still cannot access files then the old drive may be DAMAGED either physically or electronically.  You could go to the website of the old drive manufacturer and download drive diagnostic software which may come up with a reason for the problem.

Good luckremove old HDD from pc
install new HDD
install windows XP
re-install old HDD
ensure old HDD is on secondary IDE cable (ie slot 2, ide2 it will  prob say on mobo which is which)
restart pc
that's it!
the secondary cable is usually the one the dvd/cd is attached to, you can put both on one cable if it has two connectors on the cable.
if not buy one, it will only cost a few bucks

Yes, you can do what downundersteve said, but I would connect the old drive to the same data cable as the MAIN, i.e. Win XP, hard drive, with the main drive being master and the old drive being slave, as Dusty said.  The master will be the boot drive.  If Windows recognizes the old drive, you may then be able to copy files from it.
I suggested ide2 because it is the original drive, ie set to master.
if you put it on the same cable as new drive, (also set to master) there wil be a conflict and not work.

I thought it would be easier to install to id2 than to explain master/salve/jumper position, reading diagram, ask type of drive etc etc.......I see your point but I think your logic is flawed.  In your first reply, you said, "the secondary cable is usually the one the dvd/cd is attached to, you can put both on one cable if it has two connectors on the cable."  If a hard drive and a DVD/CD drive were on the same cable, he would still need to set master and slave settings.  And, besides, he may have already had two optical drives on that channel.

What he could do, in this case, is temporarily disconnect any optical drives from the IDE2 connector and then connect the second hard drive to it.  That way, no master/slave configuration issues. As he has gone missing for now i'll not offer anything constructive...I have turned the light off.......

Solve : Problem with the registry????

Answer»

Problem:  When I try to click on the clock on the lower right hand corner of the screen I get an error message that tells me that "another program is currently using this file at this time".  It is in a pop-up window that is labeled Control Panel.  I also get the same message when I click on certain items within the control panel.  I ran Norton and Antispyware in safe mode and I ran scan disk.  This did not fix the problem.  Is there something I should be doing in the registry?  Thankswhat os do you have?? what protection do you have?

did this start happening all of sudden or has it been going on for a while? what did you dl right before this started happening?

So if you think that it is something wrong with the registery then download a software and run it..Yellow FLAG on Maksim.

This will not help find a solution to the problem. Quote

hi there.
this does not sound like a registry FAULT, (but I could be wrong)
I would guess it is a windows fault bacause you are getting it on various objects.
If it were my computer,(hope you are using XP) I would do a repair install** with XP cd.
of if you have system restore on you could do a roll back?
** this will replace corrupt files but may also loose a lot of your stuff, ie favs, internet settings etc etc

can you post a pick of what processes are running it could be some odd bit of software is preventing it, but i do think that might be unlikelyI am running Windows Xp and I did run registry mechanic to try to fix the error. The type of protection I am using is Norton AntiVirus and Trend Micros Spyware Program.  I also downloaded a trial version of spyware DOCTOR just too see if that would help to because I have heard that some spyware programs can pick up spyware that other can't.  Needless to say the program still exists.Yes it did start happening all the sudden... I wanted to look at the calendar LAST WEEK and the error message came upIf your using Win XP and you think it's a registry or other software problem there is a very good program, minimal expense called jv Power Tools 2006 at: http://www.macecraft.com/The following online scanners are pretty good at picking up nasties.

Online Virus Scan and Spyware Scan
http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm

Online Malware Scan
http://www.ewido.net/en/

If they come up clean then you may have a legitiment program running that is 'stealing' your clock, then run Hijackthis & post a log and we can check it out.

You could also look in msconfig>startup for anything odd.

Solve : Cannot open avi file?

Answer»

I have an avi file which cannot been opened by any program I've tried.
It gives an unsupported file format error message.
It's a VIDEO file recorded by my CCTV.
Previously all the similar files were ok and can be opened.
Could it be corrupted?
Any help?what programs have you tryed?
Most likely cause is a damaged file.I've tried Windows Media Player, Winamp, DivX.

The file I'm trying to PLAY is 900MB in SIZE.
If I try to play a shorter clip, let's say 200MB, it can be played.
So I guess there was something gone wrong during the saving process DUE to the clip size.

Solve : Lost Drivers for Win98SE?

Answer»

I have installed Win98SE on the HD.
It did not show any errors or messages until it got to "Running for the first time"
When searching for drivers for numerous hardware or programs none of them seemed to be there.
Missing .dll files.
Missing .exe files.
Missing .386 files.
And others.
eg. PCI ETHERNET Controller in Device Manager
Can ANYONE explain this for me please.More info on your machine and someone will be along shortly to ASSIST...

I suspect you need to re-install your MBoard drivers though.

patio.   8-)2 HD's One with XP unplugged, and one I am trying to get 98SE installed on.
Further to my above post, it appears most hardware noted in Device Manager
are working properly, but anything connected to Internet connecting and
communication is lacking the driver info.

Thanks for the reply. Is this a new install of 98? What do you MEAN XP unplugged? Are you trying to end up with some sort of dual boot system? If so, how are the drives set up? If not, what does that mean? This is a clean install as if it is a new PC.
There is a second HD in the computer, that I unplugged the wiring from.
Rather than remove it altogether.
I want to install XP to the same drive as 98 after I get it right.
As stated above, 98 searched for drivers for all the hardware installed in PC, and
found all, except , none for anything to do with NETWORKING.What is the computer and/or motherboard make and model.

Download Everest Home, make a report and insert it here:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.htmlEverest shows a large file of the computer summary.
I had to activate the second HD with XP on it to get the info
you asked for.

Compaq Deskpro EN PIII.
Compaq Motherboard.
512 MB Ram.
3 Com Ports, Com 1, Com 2, LPT1.
Storage: Intel 82801BA Bus Master IDE Controller
              WD HD 18GB (w/XP Pro)
              WD HD 18GB  (C,E,F Partitions w/98SE)
              CD Rom Drive
              Floppy Drive.

Network Adapter Intel PRO/100 VM Network Connection.

To help me better understand where you are headed, "why
are you asking for this info"? Is my motherboard a newer
version than 98SE is not capable to run on.

As I mentioned when I installed 98SE and it was looking for
drivers it appears anything to do with networking and communication were not there.
Video, audio, USB, keyboard, mouse etc were all enabled.

Is this because 98SE is too old to have any of these drivers
preloaded?

If so can I just load these drivers "After"A Deskpro EN will run Windows 98 just fine. That was THE operating system when it was out.

What speed PIII processor? That will determine exactly which drivers.

The Compaq (HP) website should have ALL the drivers you need although Win98 had them natively for the PII-350 up to at least a PIII-500, as I recall.

http://h20180.www2.hp.com/apps/Lookup?h_lang=en&h_cc=us&cc=us&h_page=hpcom&lang=en&h_client=S-A-R163-1&h_pagetype=s-002&h_query=Deskpro+EN

Ok

Thanks for the info.
While I was waiting for your reply, I did find the EN information on the Compaq website.
The drivers for the Network Adapter were there.
My EN is a PIII 1.0, so all is fine there.

I got concerned when WIN98 was searching for some 50 odd drivers in a file named PRECOPY, and could,nt
find them, and when I specified search the 98 disk, still could,nt find them.
For example, drivers for files I recognized such as tracert.exe, winipcfg, ftp.exe, ipconfig.exe, and ping.exe, plus
many .dll files.

When starting 98 for the first time, my screen size was as though it was in Safe Mode, and trying to move the
slider to a higher resolution would'nt work.

This is what prompted my questions.
Again, thanks for the help. Quote

You have to install the correct video driver before the rest is functional.

It sounds like you have a bad/damaged/dirty/bootleg Win98 CD. Any of those would explain the install issues.ewwwwwwwww.
Don.t like that reply.
It is software that was purchased.
However, it is loaded on a Kingston Data Traveller (USB).
Also, can I load the drivers that I need from Compaq, in the W/98 file that is on the Kingston, and then clean install W/98 again.? Quote

Solve : How to do a "clean" reinstall??

Answer»

Until today, I always believed that if you uninstall a program, reboot, and then re-install, it would be like starting with a fresh new installation.  I've now encountered a situation that makes me question that.

Here's the story.  Corel Draw 8.0 was repeatedly CRASHING on my PC, USUALLY during routine tasks like doing a "Save As" or searching for an existing drawing in a directory.  It had run fine on the same machine for a couple of years.  After ruling out conflicts with other software and checking several ways for viruses and spyware, I figured that a file must have become corrupted, so I decided to do an uninstall-reinstall.

I used the uninstall program from the Corel program group.  After that, I ran two registry cleaners (Norton, and a freeware one).  I then rebooted and did a reinstall.  It prompted me for the registration key, which I had, and it appeared that things were going as I'd have expected.

However, after I opened the program, I immediately NOTICED that the "history" list -- in other words, the list of files that I had opened most recently -- was completely up to date.  If it was a fresh install, how did it know what I had been WORKING on before?  In addition, it was already set up to save files to a directory on a different drive.  How did it know to do that, since I don't save my Corel data files in the default location?

And of course, there's still the problem of crashing.  The uninstall-reinstall didn't APPEAR to solve it, although I need to do more testing to see if it has improved any.

My main concern isn't the crashing -- if I work at it long enough, I'm sure I'll find a solution to that.  But what am I overlooking as far as getting a nice clean re-installation?  If I wipe out the program and reinstall it, how does it "know" that it had been there before?  I find it hard to believe that it's getting any information from the saved data files, which are on a different drive.

Background info:  Windows XP Home.  Sony PC, 2.8 gHz, 512 meg RAM, lots of hard disk space.   No patches for my version on the Corel website.  Hard drives thorougly checked for viruses and spyware.  No problem with crashes in any other programs.   And yes, I know that Corel 8.0 is an older version, but it meets all my needs (and in fact, it can do way more than I'll ever be able to use it for), so I don't feel a great need to upgrade.

Any thoughts?  Thanks in advance!I don't know about Corel, but Firefox & Thunderbird does the same thing.  If you do an uninstall/reboot/reinstall, all your 'stuff' is still there.   Come to find out that these programs store some data in MORE THAN ONE PLACE.  I found this out after doing a 'search' thru Explorer.  Maybe Corel does the same thing.  You might try doing an Explorer search and see what you get.

Hope this ads some insight

Alan <><  every program that i know of does just go yo m ycomputer your harddrive (most commonly called c drive) program files and look for the program folder and detelete it..

make sure you uninstalled the program first.

Solve : Access to MS Outlook Calendar entry datestamp??

Answer»

MS Outlook 2002 Calendar Query.  Is there a way of accessing the date/time when Calendar appointment entries are made or changed?  I wish to determine if original entries have been subsequently modified (and thus may have a later than expected date/timestamp).  My computer skills are limited but I am aware that some other programs like MS Word do save FILES with this time information.  However, I have no idea where to start regarding my query.  I suspect it is not possible but I can HOPE!  Thanks for any clarification.Outlook does track modification times - you can use Visual Basic to access the "date modified" field.  You might get help with this from someone in the programming forum.  Alternatively, you can modify the forms that display calendar entries.  Tools-->Forms-->Design this form.  You can then put a control on the form that displays the date modified field. Many thanks for your comments.  I'm not really FAMILIAR with Visual Basic to try your suggestion to access date created or modified fields but I have DELVED further into the program looking at form design along the alternative route you indicated.  However, it would appear that the original form design employed by Outlook by default does not capture the two wanted fields so that examining existing Calendar entries (if I could) would probably not yield the required information.  I've tried looking at the .pst file using simple text program but it is a mass of MEANINGLESS (to me) characters.  Once again, thanks for responding. No no, the modification times are added to the calendar entries whether or not the control is visible on the calendar form.  In fact, if you put such a control on the form, you should really make it read-only and leave it to Outlook to decide when and how to change the field's contents.

Solve : Safest easiest to use email??

Answer» NOTHING BIG here but I have been using Mozilla T-bird for email and it has been great but I recently was hired to help edit newspaper columns for a writer and then send them to the editors. The reports I get is that the T-bird adds unwanted characters that they have a hard time deleting. I used T-bird at the recomendation of a friend who said they were good against hackers vs Outlook.

Short version is that I am open to ideas/thoughts as to what email system and browsers are the best for safety, usage, trouble-free etc.

Thank you......SteveI have a personal liking to  yahoo's email. It has a attached virus protection and its free.
I am sure others here will differ, keep checking back. All email programs basically have the same limitation: they EITHER send in plain text or HTML.  HTML is not a suitable presentation format for professional printed publications.  You really should be composing your columns using whatever package/format your editors prefer (e.g. MS Word, SAVING as RTF) and attaching those to your email.  You cannot rely on email programs not to TINKER with the content - they are limited by underlying email transmission protocol.TBird adds nothing to e-mails...only what you want it to.If only it were that simple.  Thunderbird has an HTML editing and rendering engine.  Try replying to an email, inserting text all over the previous email.  Then have a look at the source code for that message.  You'll see just how much Thunderbird is obliged to add.

Solve : How to edit a certain line/command in autoexec.bat?

I'm using Symantec Ghost.  I have a laptop connecting to a SWITCH and there is a server connected to that switch.  The server has the ghost images on it.  When I boot up my laptop, I have the option to go into the server and CHOOSE where I would like to boot from.  A virtual floppy drive was created to make the laptop think that it was booting from a floppy.  Now within the virtual floppy folder, I have an "autoexec.bat" FILE that I need to edit.  How can I edit this file so that I can input a command that tells the laptop to boot from a certain file.  I will actually need it to boot from mulitple DIFFERENT files.  Example C:\Windows\Images\Image01.  After that, I will need it to load from: Example C:\Windows\Images\Image02...and so on, all the way down to Image05.  If one of y'all geniuses could help me out, please LET me know.Simply open up the file in notepad. Or from the dos prompt, type "edit autoexec.bat" when you're in the same directory. Thanks Neil but what would the command line be if I wanted it to load from a certain folder?

Solve : Word > Adobe?

Answer»

I have to create a form for my company to use with Adobe. I have created a Word Doc with for fields but the ISSUE I'm having is locking the permanent information into place.

Customer Name:        "Form Field Here"            Reported By:   "Form Field Here"
Model:                       "Form Field Here"                        Reviewed By:   "Form Field Here"

Problem DESCRIPTION:   "Form Field Here"

Feedback Date:           "Form Field Here"

What I can't figure out is how to type in a form field area such as Customer Name: without having Reported By moving with every character. I have tried inserting text boxes and it screws up the paragraph formatting of the rest of the fields. There has got to be an easier way to do this besides doing it all manually field by field. Any help would be greatly appreciated.nevermind...after playing with it for 6 HOURS today I got it. AH well, at least I got paid for it. next to work on is converting it to .pdf and praying that the form fields I put in will convert as well.If I had bothered to read further in the forums I would have noted that the form fields do not convert from Word to Adobe. How now do I go about putting form fields in the stupid thing so that people can fill it out?I'll bet that info can be found in Adobe Acrobat's Help. One would hope that would be the case...sadly it is not, at least not that I can find or understand anyway...does anyone have any more USEFUL information?Acrobat Pro comes with Adobe Designer.  That's what you should use to create your forms.  It's a little tricky to get to grips with at first, but it's much better for your purposes. What about using an Excel sheet?
Recently I've just created a template for quotation purpose, where the USER can choose the field entry from the drop down list (data validation).

Hi there; have you ever used or still using "StorageCrypt"?  I need your OPINION or comments about this PROGRAM.  Is it reliable?  Is there any bug(s) or known issue(s)?  Any information about this program will be appreciated.well, i was using it for a while and i didn't find any bugs or  errors and i filled quite safe for illegality while using it.
Thanks for the response.
You said you were using it for a while; do you mind telling me why you quitted using it?What's the purpose of using it? Here's what one user said:

"if you USE Storage Crypt on a USB card you won't be able to unencrypt and use the files unless Storage Crypt is on the remote computer as well"

Here is a lot more info:

Many PEOPLE have successfully locked their data permanently AWAY from themselves with encryption programs as well.  Tell me about it... does anyone know how to unlock a passworded zip?
