Finally got frustrated with my ASUS laptop where the touchpad is too sensitive and I will be typing and if my hand accidentally touches or brushes against the surface it will move my pointer to a different section of whatever I am typing making a jumble mess.

Google on this subject talks about going into mouse settings and there (might be) a setting there to set the touchpad to disable when keys are typed. My laptop DOESNT have anything there of this kind. It was originally a Windows 8 laptop when purchased and I bought a license of Windows 7 to apply to it. ASUS dont have any touchpad drivers for this model and so its using the generic driver that Windows 7 64-bit installed with with no problems in functionality.

So I went to track down a piece of software that I read about years ago on PCWorld and found this article here:

Years ago I had a Toshiba Qosmio that was running XP and I used the TouchFreeze utility which worked well. I forgot the name of this utility so I went into first searching to see if Microsoft made a touchpad lockout feature as part of the OS feaures but didnt find one for Windows 7, so then I refined my search to touchpad lockout and PCWorld and found the article above, and it talks about sometime typing to use the older TouchFreeze with Windows 7 and it not working. So PCWorld updated this article to include a newer free utility Touchpad Pal that can solve for this problem. I scanned it first before installing and it scanned clean. Installed it and its working with no problems as now I am typing and intentionally moving against touchpad to try to get it to mess up and the utility is working as intended and a pop up bubble tab messaged from the tray icon that it prevented the accidental touchpad interaction.

*Note: It adds a shortcut to desktop but its accessible through system tray. Clicking on this shortcut on desktop... nothing happens... so its kind of pointless to be there. But there isnt any configuring for the free edition. When its installed its enabled and it keeps track of how many times it blocked the touchpad from interfering with keystrokes. was there no Fn key combo that turns the touchpad on and off?
all the laptops I've seen have such a feature (for that very need).There is a similar "syndaemon" package on LINUX distributions which locks out clicks for a CONFIGURABLE AMOUNT of time after a key is pressed, preventing palm-clicks while typing.

I have had photoshop 6 for many years. Suits my needs fine. Today when doing some simple photoediting I clicked somewhere in the vicinity of the left side toolbox/bar/palette while my eyes were elsewhere. The contents of the toolbox have vanished. The appearance is that of the box having been MINIMISED. That's to say the top blue bar of the box and the photoshop eye symbol are still there..but the contents, the tools themselves, are not. There is nothing to click to restore or expand the box if it has indeed been minimised.

Googling the PROBLEM finds scores of people who have lost their toolbox - most, though not all of whom had the problem successfully solved. But all of them that I can find involve the whole box/panel itself vanishing (hence such solutions as windows- show tools or reset all pallets etc), they also mostly involve later/different versions of photoshop so involve clicking on tabs which don't exist in photoshop 6.

None of the above have HELPED. Attached is what it looks like on my screen along with the message that appears if I right click the eye (clicking the blue top bar does noth8ing). If I PRESS the download option it tells me an unknown adobe online error has occurred and to try again, or else reinstall from the disc...which would be a job as I haven't had it for years. What's happened and how do I retrieve the missing tools?

If you double click the light-blue title bar in the floating toolbar window (The one that still contains the "Go to adobe Online" button) it should restore to normal size and show the tools again.

This feature was removed at some point- I think in CS- so modern web sites documenting common photoshop problems never mention it.Thank you! It worked. I am trying to learn to use Dosbox .74 When trying to run Lotus 123 version 2 the links to other spreadsheets worksheets just return ERROR looks like it needs more work. Maybe using DOSBox the exe files and worksheet files all need to be in same directory.What exactly are you asking?

For REFERENCE Lotus 123 2.0 seems to have no issues with formula links for me.

With a directory mapped to C:, I saved a worksheet to C:\ as C:\WK.WK1, then created another spreadsheet in C:\123 and had a link reference through

First I start dos box then type mount c c:\lotus then it says c is mounted as
local directory c:\lotus\ I have Z:\> prompt I then type c: Then I have

c:\lotus are listed I store my documents in directory called store when I select this

When the spread sheet is up and running by the above method and you go to file
then directory and and it asks for, enter current directory: I type in c:\lotus\store
you get error message that says Directory does not exist

It seems that when Lotus is running it can not find the WK1 files I might not be mounting
the right way or all EXE and WK1 files need to be in same directory. Might changing
123.set help? Or could changing info in bat file help?

This does work when running in Windows XP and I should mention I am running this
DOSBox on windows XP not Windows 10 if this matters.

When I run Lotus 123 On XP I can go to file retrieve and it brings up all my WK1 files
when running under DOSBox I go to file retrieve then I have to select my directory
where WK1 files are stored. You want to mount C:\ directly.

By mounting C:\LOTUS as C: within DosBox, C:\ within DOSBox is the same as C:\LOTUS on the system itself. That is, If you have these FOLDERS on the PC you are running DOSBox On:

C:\LOTUS
C:\LOTUS\STORE

and then you mount C: as C:\LOTUS within DosBox, then Dosbox has the following directories:

C:\
C:\STORE

it does not have a C:\LOTUS or a C:\LOTUS\STORE directory. Thus the errors you are seeing.
That makes it work correctly

Monogame is the only strictly open source thing I can find in there. Unity isn't open source. CryEngine isn't open source. Neither is WPF or Windows Forms or UWP. Xamarin's SDK is open source but that doesn't really mean much. Kind of cute how they have UWP as a Mobile platform platform. Microsoft's idea of "cross-platform" often means being able to run on Windows Tablets, Phones, laptops, and computers.

That is, they consider UWP "Cross-platform" because you can develop apps for Windows Phone as well as Tablets, Laptops, and desktops. You cannot develop software for Android, iOS, Mac OS, OSX, or Linux using it, though.Just a FYI, the Steam Client also has game building/development apps. Most are WYSIWYG and Engines that allow you to build from. Some come at a cost and others are free.

I tried the free one that they have but I took a liking to a different package they had available and I bought into one of them for $40 marked down from $99.99 and have only so far used it to create landscapes and then compile it and then view it as if i was there moving around and swimming through water etc. There are free and item/objects for sale that you can download and add to it. As the free service that i have with it there are limits to how many free downloads you can have per month etc. If I buy into it I could have unlimited downloads but so far until I get a grasp of developing for it there is no need yet to pay a monthly fee for content downloads when the 5 or so per month are enough now to tinker with. You can also create your own objects for it but I havent played with that yet, but there are videos on youtube of people making 3D objects that are able to be imported as 3D object models into the engine and placed in the WGSIWYG. I will share more on the steam stuff when i get home from work. the title of it skips my memory as for I have only used it a few times since buying it, and I havent actually coded yet for it. I have only just tinkered around with the building of landscapes and waterways and textures for ground and mountains and grass that sways from wind etc, and lighting effects of sun angle etc. The cool thing is that when your done with a project you can compile it to an EXE and share it with others and it has no royalties, so if you make something cool with it and want to sell it you can or if you want to make a game and give it away as an EXE you can do that as well. One test I had was what is the smallest project that can be created, and I can make a game rpg world type of environment for 400MB as a stand alone EXE, but at 400MB its not a game its just an empty map area with grass, mountains, and waterways and the sun at a choice angle that currently is at a fixed angle because there is no code to control a day/night cycle yet.

I will share the name of the game builder that I bought and the free ones that I played with when i get home from work as for I cant get to them to link them from here at work, in case anyone is interested in making stand alone games for PC and some of them also support developing for Android, Linux, and Mac from the Steam game dev offerings. I have only played around with the building for PC games. I have a long ways to go in coding for it and learning all the tricks. And I want to make my own objects which means that I will probably have to buy an Adobe product that supports making the 3D models at a couple hundred dollars at some point, but before I do that I want to make sure its something that i am sticking with vs an idea that is fun one day and lose interest in it the next. I've bought software in the past with a plan and then never followed through and it was wasted money so Ive learned to not buy software anymore unless I know I am going to really use it...

Lastly, the game development WYSIWYG that I bought is CPU intensive to compile the 3D game world, but it can be done with lightweight modern processors. On my AMD A8-5545m 2.7Ghz quadcore it takes about 6 minutes to compile a stand alone game environment with CPU and hard drive RUNNING full tilt. On my 8-core AMD FX-8350 4Ghz it takes 25 seconds in which the SSD looks to be the bottleneck because the CPU isnt maxed out. Free software I have from Steam:

Screenshots attached are of the Game Guru software which I like the features and ease of use of, however Game Guru is not free. The free game dev programs listed above I haven't spent much time with them yet to say whether I like them or not. Because I paid money for Game Guru I put more time into playing with that but still a bunch to learn.

The first screenshot shows how they have all sorts of free resources once you own the software to watch videos on how to do certain things to be quickly on your way to making stand alone games.

The second screenshot is after clicking on the rocket icon to test the game. This one is just a bare map with mountains, water way, and greenery that sways in the wind and when you move around it. This is just a default starter map that I launched.

Lastly testing this on my Athlon II x4 620 2.6Ghz with 4GB RAM, I have 2GB RAM free for Windows 7 64-bit even with this loaded, but the CPU is hit heavy when its loading the game environment. It took 3 minutes to load up a demo games layout in the editor to tinker with. Twice as fast as the A8-5545m 2.7Ghz system that I tested this on but not as quick as the AMD FX-8350 4Ghz at 25 seconds. Once your in the game environment though, none of the systems lag playing around in the world game environment you create on these 3 systems I tested it on, and then A8-5545m has integrated graphics as part of the APU.


[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]I'd argue that those sorts of frameworks/tools are sort of like Unity. For the most part they "are" the platform that they target. Unfortunately this means that you typically have less control of the software. And of course you are constrained to what the software is designed to allow you to build- if you try to go outside it's capabilities you will easily run into barriers.

It's similar to Visual Basic in that regard; it's designed for standard Windows-based applications. And you CAN repurpose Visual Basic to make all sorts of different programs including full-screen games but you are fighting an uphill battle. of course with a game engine or game maker you would be fighting in the other direction. You aren't going to be creating, say, a UWP Clock App in Blender or Geovox, for example.

On the topic of Games, though, I sometimes write simpler game titles because I like exploring the possibilities of making MODIFICATIONS to the core concepts of a game. usually I write it directly in Windows Forms and create the appropriate game and render loops and draw everything manually to a PictureBox. This isn't ideal and I've run into it's limitations particularly with my Arkanoid clone but the alternative is to make a full-blown "game" using DirectX or a Toolkit like OpenTK which I find immensely complicates the entire process.

As an example, I gold-plated the living heck out of my Arkanoid clone, which has all sorts of ridiculous capabilities. It's possible to make Platform levels in the editor- I remember one of my test levels involved navigating Mario from one side of the level to the other, avoiding red shells and breaking bricks to allow them to open new paths to get a starman, which would allow you to kill the red shells and then killing all of them invoked a trigger which busted a wall of invincible blocks (while playing the "puzzle solved" chime from Zelda, naturally) allowing the one "required" block in the level to be broken to complete the stage. Then the next level had you fight a boss which was a snake like in VARIOUS snake games composed of blocks. breaking one of it's component bricks would cause it to shoot a damaging fireball at the players paddle (paddles had health bars. It made sense at the time...). The goal was to hit the snake on the head block. This would kill it, resulting in an elaborate, drawn out death sequence as each segment of the snake broke from the tail upwards and then showered the paddle in Macguffins (I created a number of pointless items which give small health boosts or provide a slowly raising score multiplier or energy recharge and called them appropriately enough Macguffins). The music would stop, a victory music would play, and then when that stopped it would trigger a delay trigger which after a few moments would cause the level to be completed.

More recently, suddenly occurred to me that I had never written a tetris clone. I had tried in high school but it seemed beyond my grasp and I never tried again. Furthermore, I thought it would be neat to make it flexible- make it able to handle various similar puzzle games where you manipulate pieces on a cell-based board; Tetris, Tetris 2, etc. or custom variants, or support custom "skins" or styles so it can look like different implementations.

It was very easy to write and I didn't need any special libraries to do it, except for the BASS.NET library for Audio.


I modelled it after the NES Tetris game by Nintendo in terms of audio and visuals. The little blocks are all custom-drawn by the program and can scale to any size as well. interestingly, the code for drawing them was actually "stolen" from of all places an "Update" program, I had written it to draw coloured gummy circle icons to indicate update status and copied the routine and changed it to draw rectangles. I wrote it in standard Windows Forms just because I was comfortable with it- Besides, being Tetris I could never sell it anyway so there wouldn't be much reason to create a UWP App out of it anyway. I also had (and am having) lots of fun with writing the various mechanics and coming up with ways to implement things like a Next piece queue and a "Hold" piece capability.
Cool info BC and yes I agree that the game maker tools that steam has your kind of confined to making stuff that is within the limitations of the utility.

I like that Tetris game you made there and have a question about the text within the game.

So in the past when I wanted to make text that scale like that I had to define how to make the alpha numerics to scale it up. Such as in a 5 x 5 sprite layout where * here represents sprites to make white on a black background, I'd call to 5 arrays. Each array representing the line of up to 5 on or off sprites, so where ever it is to be on the display they would be painted from the array where

I am thinking that perhaps I was reinventing the wheel long ago by doing this. So curious if there is a better way to scale up text like you did or if I was on the right path of making an alpha numeric map within 5 arrays where each array defines of the 5 lines what sprites would be off =0 vs on =1The text is a normal truetype Font called "Pixel Emulator" that I embedded in the program, as I found Arial looked rather out of place. Since it's just a font aside from some stuff to load the font as a resource, there is no special scaling tricks. As it stands the status area definitely isn't complete. I want it to be a bit more fancy with a display for the "next" piece as well as facilitating Hold pieces and making the Count of tetrominoes that have been dropped look better.

For your example I think it would make more sense to use a two-dimensional array rather than a number of arrays. I'm too lazy to verify the syntax in C/C++ but in C# you could have something like this:

or you can just do that for entire segments of text. Really at that point you may as well use a bitmap/image I guess. I used something similar for the "Game over" screen of my arkanoid clone game, which I've largely abandoned since the playfield is small and scaling it up to a larger size has major performance implications. (Guess that's a point against GDI+ and WinForms for this sort of thing) Perhaps I could rewrite it in UWP. It is, after all, itself a rewrite of an equally ambitious Visual Basic 6 game...

Lasers, power-ups, debris flying all over the place. Actually the debris makes it hard to track the ball. I've never been able to decide if that is a feature or an annoyance. The lasers come from a power up that shoots a ball which itself fires lasers randomly, because of course it does.Very Cool. And curious about the following.

Ever since last night, my Avira antivirus has failed to update every 2 hours like its supposed to. I thought the server was down, but today when I checked, it wasn't. Even stranger, I tried going to their site and could not! On my computer anyway; I ran Malwarebytes but found no viruses.

I was able to access the site via my phone and found a few options. One was deleting a file that might be locked waiting for a reboot; another was reinstalling the program. I chose the latter, but since I had no access to the official site I got it from Cnet.

I have by now uninstalled Avira and am currently installing it again. I hope? It seems to have stopped at 75%.

I also called customer Service (on my phone) and has passed on to a technician who had me download something called Supremo. exe. Suddenly realizing that might be a trick, I stopped the download and ended the call. Yeah I'm getting paranoid by now.

For the record, in addition to Malwarebytes I have Windows Defender, so I might not need Avira at all. So, my questions are:
*have I handled things well or have I screwed up?
*what could be going on and how can it be fixed?

I sometimes listen to music on the computer while I am cleaning. I just listened to something two weeks ago and today I put in a CD and it won't play. It doesn't even recognize it when I look on "This PC". What the heck has happened to it? I have Dell Inspirion Intel i-5-4460, Windows 10, [emailprotected] 3.20 GHz, RAM 8 GB, 64 bit operating system. I have not downloaded anything new onto the computer, I have only just gone on FB, ebay, my home page with Comcast and my Comcast mail, and some cross-stitching websites. Can you try some other CD's? Yes, I did try other CD's, Soybean. It's just not working. Cannot figure this out. I've had no trouble with the media player before today.
How old is the CD drive? Sometimes, they fail, i.e. become DEFECTIVE, and need to be replaced. They are not very expensive and can be replaced by owners who have some experience working inside a computer. Otherwise, you should take it to a repair service. I have an mp3 file that is 42 hours PLAY time , the size of the file is like 3.2 gig , i have tested 3 different video editors now and none of them can handle the large file....

i want to make a video out of the file by adding video clips on top of it on the side of the music so i can upload the music to youtube as a music video.

first i used Wondershare Filmora , and this program was the one that worked the best , i was able to put VIDEOS along with the music all the way up to 30 hours then the whole program started giving me error messages and i was un able to complete the video to the 42 hour mark

so i tested a new program CyberLink PowerDirector but that program would not give me any sound on the file , guess cus it was to large or to long playtime , it loaded the file but no sound even though i edited all the sound software options in the program it SELF to try get sound,

then i tested Adobe Premiere Pro , and that program did not load the file correctly in to the program, right before it was finished loading in i got an error every single time, so the file had no visual sound on it nor sound , guessing the program could not handle the length of the music, when i tested smaller files in mp3 they loaded without errors and had sound,

so im stuck... i cant find a program that will do the job, as i said best result was with wondershare that almost let me finish the project but bugged out at 30 hour mark...

anyone know a program that will do the job and wont bug out ?

What's the format of the video file you're trying to add?
One thing I would suggest is cutting the file into more manageable pieces, if this is an option for you.There's a free program called mp3splt that will automatically split an mp3 at intervals. Might be worth a shot:

While most clean out the dust etc on their computers on a interval basis of say every 3 months etc, I was asked if there was a way to determine which computers were used from those that havent been used, so that only computers that were used for an X-many HOURS be targeted for cleaning vs ALL = hundreds of them.

I know that a hard drive contains run hour information as part of its SMART data which could be used, but that would require manually visiting each computer to poll the hard drive for its run hours, and if your already there doing that you might as well be blowing out the dust etc. I dont know of any program that can remotely get smart data from a fleet of systems over the network and use this hour value from each system with system name as a means to collect and keep track of what computers are used more than others and which ones need frequent cleaning while others might be able to go 6 months or longer without getting blown out because if the system is off or sleeping the fans aren't spinning to act like a PC vacuum cleaner with the inside of the case act like as the bag collecting the dust.

When the workstations are not used for 15 minutes they go into a sleep mode, so they are always powered but in sleep mode fans stop spinning so its pretty much the same as an off state.

I was thinking of implementing my own solution but my skills are limited and a console window would be up as a computer use ODOMETER if I wrote something to do this as for I have never written a program to act as a service before hidden.

From description it looks exactly like what can be used to keep track of usage activity. And even though only last 3 weeks seems to be the limit for logging activity, that should be plenty enough to know the heavily used systems from the others that are sleeping etc. I was impressed with the fact that this actually taps into information already readily available on the OS so it doesnt have to create its own records, so it doesnt need to run in the background as I had thought a service would have to run to be able to determine system usage.

Basically what you are doing is imaging an exact copy of your HDD with everything...and moving it to a larger HDD...

You can move whatever doesnt have to be at a C: path to your D: drive and then use a symbolic link to redirect the fixed path to the D: drive as if it was really at C:. This works really well and I essentially spanned my SSD to a HDD making 250GB of storage for C: when C: really is a 90GB SSD. Thanks for everyone's thoughts and recommendations but believe I've got it fixed. I was reading somewhere that other programs on the computer can cause a fault like that so started looking and found my Excel program would work but kept saying it needed to replace a file that was damaged. I put in the CD as requested, it fixed the problem and also the one with Spam Butcher I guess because it 's not looked back since and is working perfectly. Anyone else have a problem similar with the same error message you might want to look at some of your other programs, one of them may be the culprit.

love it or loathe it, maybe it's time to dust off MailWasher.Motherboard on my computer appears to have gone belly up. It's about8 or 10c years old so it'd possibly time. using my wife's old Dell but it at least WORKS pretty well. Now here's my problem, motherboard is a CG5270 Asuz and finding a new one is near impossible. Used are available but i prefer a new one. Does anyone know of an available replacement that is an exact MATCH I can bolt right in the old one's place? I'm running Windows XP Professional and would appreciate any help in this area.

that's a socket 775 board, so yes, that will be all but impossible to find new.
eventually you are going to have to replace it with a more modern gen one, and that'll force the upgrade of the RAM, CPU and PSU.
so serious thought is needed on whenever you go down that path now or go cheap with just a mobo and gamble the system hangs together for a few more years.

So I work with a couple of music softwares on a Win7x64 machine, in which one needs to use plugins on audio tracks. I would like these plugins to be pinned all the time on my 2nd monitor screen. But the plugin interface remains only till the FOCUS is one the audio track it is inserted on. When i select the next track the interface disappears.

I found a lot of utility programs that work to keep an explorer WINDOW, browser window or any application window pinned on top, but none work for a child window inside the application. I am really hoping to find something like that.

Thank in advance.When those child windows disappear, the parent application is telling them to disappear. As far as I know, there is no WAY to override the parent application's instructions to its child windows.If your running a virtual environment, whatever is running in that environment can be the focus, while you can then move to the physical system and do other things. I use to run my virtual machine on one display and my physical system on another. Whatever was interacted with last on either environment is what the focus is for that environment. If you need multiples greater than 2 active windows as focus you can REPLICATE the virtual environments if your properly licensed for Windows to run multiples of an OS. I ran 4 virtual machines and 1 physcial environment on a single Pentium 4 with 2GB RAM years ago with 256MB RAM allocations for each Windows XP virtual environment. 1GB RAM was for the virtual systems running and 1 GB left for the physical system environment.

Dragon works for me in Windos XP. The fersion I now have is version 11.

A long time ago Dragon Naturally Speaking was made to work with Word Perfect, which it did very well. The was my introduction to it.

In my case it is needed because of my oor vision makes typing very hard. I can not see what I type, so I have my face on the keybaord.

But with Drago, I can dictate about 100 wrods per minuete and it gets it right most of the time.

Yes, Drago is slow, and anything the takes more resorces makes thigsn even worse. So I will use Dragon Pad, a bare bones word processor taht has almost no features other tahtn font, and size and simple things like bold and italic. No spekk checkingm what ever you say goes on the page.

Please come back and update the thread if you f ind the Dns is working for you as good as it should.

This thread is one of the few taht tells it like it is. Nuance keeps advertising th ier product as good on Windows 10 when it fact they have been slow to fix the problem. So it you do find taht it is now working better, [plaes come here and tell others.

Lack of clear proof taht Nuance has control of the issue is not good news for users.

Myself, if a program runs better on Windosws 10, then I will use it on Windows 10. But if not, I go back to Windos XP or QWineos 7.

I did not do this on Dagon this time. I had to type it. Dragon takes some much time to load taht I just did NTO want to wait for it.

Really, it would be great if Nuance makes Dragon work as users want on Windows 10. It is much, much better taht cortana for dictation. Cortana is more about AI and less about speech regonition. Dfagon is very good are recognizile a wide range of accents and volaculaires. Hopefully hey will improve the product.

If you search the web you will find taht there is little good news from Nuance. Maybe taht will change son.

Just upgraded to Dragon Professional Personal 15. I am running latest upgrade of Windows 10 on a Surface Pro 3. I did a fair amount of dictation, mainly into Word, Outlook, and played a bit with machine control and tried using "intelligent" commands. DNS accuracy is the best of any of their versions I have used (I have been using it since v2). Phenomenal. UNBELIEVABLE. And easy!. That's the good news. It does what it says it does better than any other product.

WIN 10 is the WORST OS due to the fact some of the games can not be displayed correctly, another thing is this OS gives us a very confusing start menu , last bust not least it often makes PC frozen for no reason , so i believe there MUST BE SOMETHING WRONG with WIN 10 and no wonder MICROSOFT intends to give this OS free of charge to us so i think we should just choose the previous OS like win 8, 7 or even XP because they are more friendly and easy to use.

For its part, Nuance has not responded to multiple voice messages from TPR on this story. It is unclear how many people were working under the impression they would qualify for these incentives. Nuance is a Fortune 1000 company.

I've been using PaperPort 14.5 for years and although there were problems occasionally I was not prepared for the massive issues when upgrading to Windows 10. The 10 upgrade removed PaperPort from my computers. Nuance Support was not very helpful simply me to "kindly reinstall the software." Unfortunately the extra cost of the disk and extended support (rip off) since the initial support only lasts 90 days. I often never receive the hard cd for installation. The extended download electronically usually works once and they want you to spend another $7.99 for another not to mention the constant harassing of their telemarketers.

A few years ago, I had windows XP and Excel on MS office. I also had several spread sheets on LOtus VERSION 4. When I imported a lotus file into excel the result was the convenience of Lotus and the power of Excel. I was able to create MACROS using the lotus keystrokes. Running macros and editing was a snap. I would like to find how I can GET something like this now with Windows 10. What is it you gain by having both Lotus and Excel and switching between the 2? As far as I know, Excel can do everything Lotus could do and more. I was a big-time user of Lotus back in the 90's but switched to Excel and never missed Lotus. MS gave Excel the ability to respond to the Lotus "/" commands and even has this capability in the LATEST version of Office.

Excel has Lotus compaibility options under Advanced options:

I'm interested in learning how to create a computer software for employee scheduling and management. The program would essentially be on the computer, but I'd like to have an iphone and android version as well. I know how to code in MATLAB and Java (I've used Eclipse before), but other than that I don't really know how to EVEN begin. Any help is appreciated!

Thank you!For a project like this, I'd design it around a database on a web host and have all DEVICES connect through browser to it as the most easiest method. This would save from having to code for different platforms and instead you can have the webpage detect what browser is being used and then appropriate formatting for tablets vs desktop computers etc.

If your looking to make a product that comes at a cost, there are so many scheduling software options out there. Its a tough market. There are lots of free scheduling options out there as well as low cost. I would think that you might want to add a feature or two that other scheduling software dont have to be able to compete better, but only idea that comes to mind would be if you added video conferencing to it so those who have access to centralized scheduling would have reminders and then be able to connect together remotely if NEEDED to attend important meetings. But there are video chat options out there outside of scheduling software that people are already using so. Forgive my reinterpretation of your question, but:

Uncharitable? Maybe. but there is such a thing as biting off more than you can chew. And the breadth of this query is- well, a bit silly!

1. Create a design document from the perspective of the user. What capabilities does it PROVIDE, How will you, as a user, use the software? For software like this around 50 pages would be terse but workable.

2. Create a technical design document drawing from the first design document and describing how you plan to implement those features.

3. Implement the features in the technical design document.

Just as an overview- It's obviously going to use a database. Nobody can tell you what database to use- But I will say that MS Access would be a poor choice. Postgres is pretty good. You'll have to design the tables and you'll have to know how to work with a relational database if you haven't already as well as pick up on the query language.

Since you want to support Apps, it needs to be possible to interface with that database via HTTP. This would mean learning how to program server-side web pages. So you'll have to choose a server side development technology and implement a database layer. REALISTICALLY, you'll want all the business logic which deals with actually manipulating and dealing with the data as part of the web API itself. So that will be where the bulk of everything happens. Client apps/applications would interface through that web server to read and set information. For example perhaps an employee can book time off or something and that saves that information to the database which is used when constructing schedules.

As you can see, I have a very old copy of Aldus Type Twister. It appears that I last installed it back in 2005. It is not free ware,I THINK I got it when it was on floppy disk. I was just now looking to see i fit was updated. Guess not.

Was wondering if anyone knew of any software that monitored CPU usage and when CPU usage goes over a certain % of use it would log a date/time of when it reached that threshold and then when it went back to normal idle log date/time then too.

Thinking a service or program running sampling the CPU could be written that keeps an eye on CPU usage, so that the program doing the monitoring doesnt cause itself to detect itself as a false positive, but thats beyond my programing abilities as for I am not sure how I would import CPU utilization percentage value. I looked to see if there was any open source system monitoring code out there to use sections of someone elses code on how to monitor utilization of CPU, but none found. Tools out there that monitor CPU's just show real time and no LOGGING.

I put the brakes on with coding up my own solution for this and figured I'd ask to see if anyone knows of a way to do this if some software or code already exists before I reinvent the wheel. If anyone knows of some code to achieve this to point me in the right direction if it needs to be coded up as a service that would be cool too if software doesnt exist to do this or writing up code to do it makes more sense vs buying a product that does the same etc.

Trying to figure out how long processes take to complete that when the process completes it stays running, so its not as easy as putting an EXECUTABLE into a batch file and write the date time before the start of the EXE and then at then end of the EXE. Because the EXE is always running it will never GET to the end time written to log of a batch. For processes that run and close when done its easy to track how long a process took to complete, but an EXE that I dont have source code to adding logging to and I want to know how long its running against a CPU heavily for, the only way I can see this achieved is by monitoring CPU utilization and when the CPU goes over 90% to then log when this happened and then when it drops below 90% to log that date/time as well to know how long a process is taking.I use Efmer Tthrottle* because I have a i7 4790 with a stock cooler and if you max it out the temp will go to 100 C so I use this app to throttle it back to 20% cpu when the temp goes over 75, and release the throttle when it gets lower. I think it has some handy logging features. Maybe more what you are looking for is Speedfan which can log temps, fan speeds, etc at intervals you can select, and also do trigger actions at certain temps such as run a script or program. You can load the logs into Excel and get a graph too. If you want you can make Speedfan put its readings in shared memory and write an app to collect them. I think you can do it in Python.

Tthrottle doing its thing with a CPU hog (notice the temp cycling between 60 and 75) if it wasn't running that upward slope would get right up to 100 and I'd be in thermal throttling.

I suppose I should have said more in my initial post. I am trying to figure out how long a CPU intensive process runs for that runs at a scheduled interval. I know the start time of it but no idea when it ends and instead of having to babysit the server to see how long it takes to complete, I figured there must me a software or scripted method of doing this. I figured knowing when the CPU is HIT heavily that would be a starting point and when its done at greater than 90% use a date/time could be logged as well.

Your thermal info shared though is interesting because if there was a log that saved CPU temps with a Date/Time that too would be a way to log this to figure out how long it runs.

On my power hungry Phenom II x4 3.0Ghz it completes in about 12 minutes and I observed that myself because waiting 12 minutes isnt all that bad. But I wanted to drop my electric bill because the Phenom II x4 3.0Ghz runs at around 160 watts when the CPU is hit hard and around 110 watts idle when cool n' quiet kicks in to underclock the CPU.

I noticed my netbook that I set off into storage when digging for something different and realized that why dont I repurpose that for my needs instead of this power hungry Phenom II x4 system. So I migrated over to an Intel Atom N280 1.66Ghz APU and I am trying to determine when this heavy hitter process ends so I can adjust the scheduled tasks and not have overlap of scheduled events, and with an event that runs independent of windows scheduled tasks, I'd like to know when that ends before I trigger another event. The Intel Atom N280 1.66Ghz runs on 13 watts idle and 27 watts when its running full tilt with the CPU heavy daily routine.

It comes out to a savings of about 2kW a day at 18 cents per kWh so I'm saving 36 cents a day which comes out to $131.40 a year in electric bill savings to beat on this Intel Atom N280 during sleep hours. And when this CPU intensive process is not going on it has plenty of processing power to do everything else I need which is to be a File Server ( NAS ) and Database Server.

With the Phenom II x4 3.0Ghz setting up the scheduled events was easy because I knew when a heavy hitter scheduled event was done, but last night I watched the heavy hitter event put the Intel Atom N280 1.66Ghz to 100% for over 1.5 hours and so I left it running and when i woke up in the morning it was done so i know that it took less than 6 hours and that it will save me money on electric bill using this, but I have no idea as to how long it took to complete. The benchmark of a N280 Atom is around the performance of a Pentium 4 2.53Ghz but far less power consumption. Quite the difference from that of a Phenom II x4 3.0Ghz If you know the name of the executable you want to monitor, and TASKLIST can see it, you can have a simple little script like this. The delay in secs is a bit approximate as you can see. If you have one of the sleep.exe commands (the Microsoft one in the Server 2003 res kit is good because it has an -m switch option e.g. sleep -m 250 for milliseconds) you could use that instead of good old ping.

i will reinstall oc guru 2 as many times as i want then either straight away on the next restart or eventually it will come up with an error saying it cant find gigabyte oc guru 2.msi installation package

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]Uninstall this and then reinstall clean. The path it shows in your pic is your user profile and its missing the file at the target path. Reinstallation should fix this. Additionally do not install this from the download location. Move the installation .exe or .msi file to a location such as C:\Utilities and run from there, this way you will keep a clean copy of the software that you install and they dont reside in a location that COULD be TARGETED for cleaning/cleanup such as temp locations are SUBJECT to.

However you state that you have already been down this path so something is removing files from your profile or you have corruption happening. If you used any PC Doctor, or PC Optimizer tools or anything like that to clean up your system they have a tendency to remove files from profiles and break stuff so just for you to be aware that the cause could have been a system utility finding it and removing it which broke OC GURU 2.

If your not using any utilities like this then be sure to perform a scan for malware or virus's as for they target profiles and the temp file path of this is unusual for a utility to reside from PERMANENTLY in a profile.+ 1 for Dave's advice...

Also if you intend to leave the app installed i would CREATE a Folder prior to the install so the path remains the same no matter what.

I am not EXPERIENCED in Recording Macros. This is in Excel 2003 - a BIT old, but I like it a lot BETTER than newer versions of MS Office.

I was trying to load microsoft word and it no longer loads all I GET is what appears to be wowexec and winword set back in task manager. I use XP and already did the restore point back to the point where word still worked and this did not help probably will have to replace all the word operating files do you not think? I should mention the excel part still works.Is this OfficeXP edition.... it should have a repair feature. This may require the ORIGINAL disc's to repair. I have used the repair for Excel and Outlook before but not Word.

A little knowledge can be a hazard, as the proverb says using slightly different words. I just downloaded 64 bit Nircmd version 2.81 released 23 May 2016, which is not exactly "fifteen years ago". The copyright message says (c) 2003 - 2016. I downloaded it from the author's website. New versions seem to come out about every 2 or 3 years. Maybe you should check things that "somebody else" said.

I put nircmd.exe and nircmdc.exe in it, then:

Control Panel / System / Advanced system settings / Advanced tab - Environment Variables button at bottom

. . . System variables / click on Path - Edit . . . I put this folder in the list: C:\Windows\System32\USER-ADDED

Then do a Restart, so it takes effect.

Ive been trying to fix this issue for 4 months now, my pc is randomly restarting when i play video games, and its usually when the gpu goes over the temperature of 60C, i stress tested the gpu alone with it going up to 65C with no issues, i checked the vram itself as well as the ram slots on the mobo, since the bugcheckcode for the event viewer gave me #26, but now it gives me nothing, everything is 0. Checked every ram stick individually, 2 days of memtestx86. I bought a new PSU, the Evga 650W G3, still restarting though. Everything in the PC is Less than 1 year old, with some parts being just a few months old for example my cpu, psu, and cooler. I suspected it was the CPU, and ill go way back on this one. I used to play Dark souls 3, and one day out of nowhere, my pc started restarting on the highest settings of dark souls. GPU went up to 70C and *restart*, but this used to be when i still had my old cpu i5 6500 and it went on and on, and suddenly out of nowhere just stopped, got my new one on black friday i7 7700k, and it started doing it again a month later. Also i have to mention that ive had the problem where my display alone just crashed, with the game sounds still going in the background eventually coming to a stop, ive had that a few times on arma and miscreated, which is a gpu issue.

My CPU was also stress tested reaching up to 70C and my pc never restarted.

Also Checked the debug PATTERN on the mobo, everything flashed, until the last one, stopped for 5 secs and went on with the pc booting up.



I dont know what to do anymore, but i am sure as *censored* ready to throw this pc in the garbage.

Nothing is overclocked.I would check the Temp ranges for that CPU....70c may be too highLast I knew Intel Processors would thermal throttle if they get too hot to avoid getting into unsafe territory for temps.

If you have a friend with a similar video card that they wouldnt mind helping you with this, you could swap video cards and then play the game and see what happens.

Last thing to be aware of is that hard drive health can mess up a system LIKE this when information for virtual memory is written to disk and then is reread back into RAM. If the drive is handing back to RAM corrupt ( mismatching binary data ) to that of which should have been written to disk and back to RAM flawlessly, it can crash a system fast. I had a hard drive a ways back that in the middle of playing intensive games it would crash randomly, usually when a lot was going on in the game and lots of information passed between hard drive and RAM for virtual memory. My solution was to replace the hard drive. I FOUND this when I ran crystaldiskinfo for this drive and it flagged it as Warning in yellow with 26 bad sectors. Windows also had a warning in event log of delayed write errors. So worth double checking the hard drive health.Control Panel / System / Advanced system settings / Advanced tab . . . If not I would run that against the system for at least 1 hour to make sure it doesn't come back with memory errors. If that doesn't have any errors I would also think a PSU problem.I tried MemTest. From memory, the way to fix: Make sure that you have the most current driver for your video card . . . If you have a laptop, go to the manufacturer's web page, and use the one listed there for it, that's important.

See if there are other updates that would be used by the game, like, make sure Windows has all the updates.Or, are you "over clocking"? . . . Put that back to normal . . . With the video card driver, put everything at the default settings

Also, make sure that your video card is on the Specs for the game. In my experience, nVidia always works, ATI kind of works, but has issues.

It's kind of confusing to figure out how to use NirCmd. As I have read elsewhere, NirCmd's help file is not that comprehensive.

Patio - Yes, NirCmd has a help file, but what I'm getting at is . . . do you see anything there that says you need to have NirCmd "wait" for one second for the program to open, before it sends the keys you want? I don't . . . So, this makes it quite confusing when you use the Help File syntax, and then nothing happens . . . That's why I'm saying, it would be good if someone had a page devoted to explaining basic things like that, and everyday "useful" applications.

The first one opens Skype, gives it my password, and logs me in . . . How does just putting the pw into the clipboard make it automatically enter into Skype?

Key things to know about NirCmd are: activate ititle, max ititle, and wait . . . It took me a while to figure this out

I recently was hit with a virus. My computer repairman kept whatever information he could, but had to reformat the HD. I reloaded the latest version of Firefox and it has been FINE for four days, but today I get this message for every bookmark - even Amazon. It allows me to make certain certificate exceptions, but not for EVERYTHING. If I type in a WEBSITE, I get the same thing.

One cause of this is that the date/ time are wrong say the YEAR is 2017 instead of 2018 there fore the certificates for web sites don't match your laptops time. I lost my excel file a month AGO, while I am moving the contents of that folder into a NEW one, now when i am using RECOVERY file its saying the entry was OVERWRITTEN with another file, the s/w recovered the excel file but the file memory space showing only 21kb and when i tried to open that file its saying the file got corrupted and it was unable to open the file, Is there anyway to recover the contents of my file. the file is important for me.See Here...Hi,

I own bootable CD with operating system OS/64.
It boots, startup and then access first FAT32 partition.
I want to CREATE partition where I copy files from CD and then make it bootable.

But how? Exist any tool?

I used earlier ISO to VDI by VBox, then Qemu Copy to convert to VMDK and after VMDK2Phys - it created partition,but after booting it hangs and cannot work 'cause partition format is ISO... so this is no WAY - of COURSE trying VMDK on VMware was success - it boots and works - but VM is not real machine.

Can anybody explain it me?

Hey everyone, I recently fixed an old, underpowered Toshiba netbook of mine. The specs are; 1GB of DDR2 RAM, 250 GB HDD, and an Intel Atom 1.6 Ghz processor. It was originally running Windows 7 Starter, which was a bottleneck in itself. My parents downloaded a virus on the laptop so I formatted the hard drive and installed Windows XP. It runs so well on the machine, sometimes that CPU fan doesn't even run! Only problem I have is I want to use this as a storage server for my house. A 250 gb hard drive is plenty for what I want it for. I CURRENTLY have it running as a NAS pretty well, but I wanted to take it a step further and install a program like SeaFile to host them online. However, every program I have tried is not compatible. Any solutions would be much appreciated! Thanks!What have you already tried?

Here comes the SPAM...Could this be call-and-response?Since you mention you have an OST file, use SCANOST.EXE but in reality yiou shouldn’t need to.
As it is OST, therefore IMAP, all your emails are sync’d with your email server.
I would delete the email account and recreate it back as an IMAP account that will then resync all your emails which should still be up on the server.

I currently use Outlook 2016 (with .pst files storing my data, not IMAP), my Calendar within Outlook is my iCloud Calendar, which syncs to my Phone and iPad. When I'm not at my computer, I can't see the emails that I have put colored categories on for follow-up, or see the folders where I have stored all my emails . And I worry about the .pst file crashing, but at the same time I don't want to move to IMAP because once you delete something it is gone for good.

What "setup" would allow me to see my contacts, calendars, and emails THE SAME WAY across all Windows and Apple devices so I can manage them all wherever I am?To be honest, when you are working with multiple devices, IMAP is REALLY the only practical option. Sure when you delete emails, it will delete from all devices but your mail server will more than likely offer some sort of trash or deleted items folder for this purpose. You can ALSO export your PST file from Outlook when you are using IMAP if you are really concerned and want to keep a backup of all your emails.Perhaps you should switch to a webmail solution such as gmail. I think that is one solution to making email behave nicely across multiple devices.

Note: I do not have any Apple devices. I have an Android phone and an Android tablet, in addition to PC's running Windows.

I've noticed an ISSUE lately occurring sometimes when I attempt to move files on my drives if they have been recently OPENED. Very OFTEN if I open an .EXE for example and then close the program I'm unable to move/delete some of the associated files as it's being used by another process. I had assumed that this was something with the the programs or OS (Win10) still doing something with the program after I ran it and closed it.

But I've recently started to look at the processes that are locking the files up and every time it's Google Chrome (I pretty much invariably have the browser open constantly and have allowed all related Google services to run). Any one have any idea why this is happening? Seems pretty ODD to me.

I recently started using an old Acer Aspire M3802 and am having problems. Everything was fine until I updated it to Windows 8. Upon my first reboot I was told the CMOS Checksum was bad, and, was prompted to continue or to run a setup, both of which I need to hit a button on my keyboard to perform, however, my keyboard does not work upon startup (I think because USB Legacy Support isn't enabled), however i can not enter the BIOS without using my keyboard, and cannot successfully boot up my computer without inputting a keystroke. I replaced the CMOS Battery but I have to set the CMOS Date/Time, which again requires using a keyboard. I TRIED using a WS/2 to USB adapter and a different keyboard but neither work, is there anything I can do?the adapter should have worked, so maybe try another adapter.also, if you PLUG something into a PS2 port, it only gets detected during boot up, so reboot after connecting something into the purple or green ports.

ideally, a native PS2 keyboard PLUGGED into the purple port on the back of the case should do the trick so YUOU may need to hunt down one of those to get into BIOS to change the legacy USB settings.
have you tried a different USB keyboard and another USB port?
Checksum errors mean the HDD aint talkin to the PC...for whatever reason///i suspect the HDD is failing.

Now about the keyboard. Do this:
Remove the hard drive. (Or just remove the power and data connectors.)
Remove all USB devices except the keyboard. Turn power on. The keyboard lights should flash. If not, poser down and try again. Try another USB port. When you get into the BIOS, reset defaults. Don't worry much about the date and time. The other stuff is more important.

Once you have BIOS set and the keyboard works, power down and put the hard drive back where it belongs. Don't expect the system to work, yum will get an emperor message. The message will confirm that the drive is there, but not bookable.

You may need to do a repair the OS.You will need the CD or DVD used to install the operating system. Set BIOS to boot from the CD or DVD. Select repair system.

After you replaced the the CMOS battery did you unplug the power to the power supply . The reason to do this is the cmos battery is only used when the power supply is disconnected from the mains, like when the computer is in transit.

Having the Date set is important for a windows computer to boot !

When you replaced the cmos battery did everything look ok on the motherboard, No bulging capacitors or a build up of dust ?

Do the Keyboard lights flash when you turn the power on. ? if not leaving the computer unplugged for 10 minutes may reset the fuse for the USB ports and get the usb ports working.
If they are still not working then perhaps try another power supply.

It is unlikely this is caused by a faulty hard drive as was suggested.


I unplugged the PC while I was replacing the CMOS Battery. Just checked the motherboard and couldn't spot any bulged capacitors or large amounts of dust. Both keyboards I used lit up when plugged into the USB port and while using a PS/2 adapter. I tried unplugging the hard drive but the problem persisted. In Windows 7 there is a 'recent documents' item.
From Google:
