Solve : Merging mails in a folder?

Answer»

It so happened, that out of interest, I SUBSCRIBED to a lot of GROUPS. The mails are piling up in respective FOLDERS(Outlook Express), all unread. I realized it is TAKING a lot of time to open and read all of them individually. Is there a way to merge all the files in a folder, to a single file, in whatever format it could be, so that when I open this single file I can read all the mails in a single shot?

Sorry if this question is too elementary.....Quote from: Newagebrahman on July 22, 2007, 12:34:39 PM

Solve : Email Attachments producing error messages.?

Answer»

Howdy Folks,

I've created an album cover in PHOTOSHOP CS, and I've attempted to email it as an attachment, but the receiver said that the album cover did not show up!!! They're seeing RED X's instead.

I've been saving it as a TIFF FILE, because I undersatnd that it'll need to be in taht format for printing. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Could someone help me?

Lena Mae ..... Odd ...... I use photoshop to make covers all the time and I SAVE them for printing as jpg...... never have any issues in emailing them as jpgs either .
What Email application are you USING ?

dl65 How do you print your covers? I was thinking that I should save mine as TIFF because they will be printed through offset printing.

I'm using YAHOO.

Tell me - Do you flatten your images or anything? Maybe I'm missing a step on that end.Yeah and if you are using work mail (how sure are you that its not the fire wall).
jpg i should work or gif.

Its so funny you post a thread and then you run away.Lena Mae take dl65's ADVICE it should work.Yes, I'm running back and forth trying to get this email out. I'm not at work, but I never thought that it could be my firewall..

I'm going to try to email it as a jpeg. dl65, whenever I save the file as a jpeg and the message "this has to be saved as a copy" would that have any effect on my problem?Lena Mae ...... So you are making 4.76" x 4.76" covers for a cd case.....
How large is your image ?
It's possible that it is too large and yahoo mail is filtering out the image.

Agreed. As a tiff file that thing is probably huge...why not upload it to imageshack instead ? ?

Solve : Outlook 2003 Archive.pst file?

Answer»

My Outlook 2003 is in physical disk 'C:' (name 'WinXP') and its 'archive.pst' in physical disk 'G' (name 'Data').

Every Saturday I run backup TASKS --all PROGRAMS closed-- and COPY all data files sotred in 'Data' into external disk 'K'. It has gone fine for years.

Last Saturday I couldn't copy the 'archive.pst'. Whenever tried, I got the message "The process cannot access the file because another process has LOCKED a portion of the file".

This Saturday (today), same thing.

What 'other process' can it be if all programs are closed? How can I unlock the 'archive.pst' so that I can copy it somewhere else? A couple suggestions:

1. Start in Safe mode and try doing your backup.

2. In NORMAL mode, open Task Manager and see what processes are running. Kill one or more and try again. If it still won't work, pick one or more processes to kill and try again, and so on. This might lead to the culprit. Another approach here would be to run msconfig, select Startup, and unselect some processes, restart, and try your backup, and so on.

Solve : Outlook crashes because of oversize email--can't use it long enough to fix!?

Answer»

I have Outlook, the version that comes in the OFFICE XP Standard suite. I sent an email yesterday that must have been too large, because the mailer-daemon response came through and the file size was 51MB!! This CAUSED Outlook to freeze, and I did "end program" using the task manager, but every time I try to RESTART Outlook it freezes before I can get any functionality out of it, i.e. to import a previous version of my inbox.pst, or to delete this gargantuan email.

I already tried copy-and-pasting my BACKUP inbox.pst file (from about 3 days ago, without this killer email inside of it) into the directory where the current inbox.pst is kept but that doesn't seem to change the situation--still when I load Outlook, I can see the pane of my inbox with the From/Subject fields, but the preview pane tries to load and then the entire program freezes.

Is there anything I can do without Outlook being open to fix this? I even tried uninstalling and reinstalling the program but there seems to be some imbedded setting somewhere that is holding onto the current (dysfunctional) version of my inbox and not letting me inside long enough to delete this email.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!!

Solve : Trouble with one account using Divx and Musicmatch?

Answer»

I own a laptop and I made an ACCOUNT for my sister to use. Mines is the administrator account and hers is limited. When she tries to add tracks to the musicmatch LIBRARY a pop-up would say its already being used by another program. We'd check my account and its not even in my playlist but I have the song in my library. Also, whenever she tries to watch Divx videos online they never load, it just gets stuck on CONNECTING. The programs works fine on my account and hasn't given me any problems. So she has to use my account all the time to watch videos and LISTEN to music which defeats the purpose of having seperate accounts.

Is it my firewall? I'm not sure what could be blocking her from using those programs. When she is using the computer...are you still logged in?

Try logging out and have her login and attempt the same procedure.

Post your results.I'm not logged in when she uses it, I checked that. Even tried going to the music folder and clicking the file itself to open in musicmatch but it still wouldn't play.

I also checked to see if there were different setting on her account for the divx but when I tried to check it it wouldn't let me access it because she has a limited account and I can't figure out how to check her settings from my account.

Solve : Media Player Plug-In for IE7?

Answer»

Hi...im a newbie and totally backward when it comes to computers so be gentle with me! My problem is as follows -

http://www.whatson.com/kerrang1052/ is the bane of my LIFE at the minute. About a month ago I regularly used the "Listen Again" feature on Kerrang Radio but lost INTEREST in it...last week I came back to it but it wont play. The live stream WORKS perfectly fine but if I try to "listen again," I click on the PLAY button, for a few seconds it displays "PREPARING" then just says "READY"

"You will need the Windows Media Player plugin to use the player" is the message at the top of the "Now Playing" box but as far as I was aware, I had it and it worked.

Im using IE7 on Windows XP Home Edition (not Firefox as I know Kerrang DOESNT support it), I have WMP11, ive tried turning my pop-up blocker off as I think its got something to do with ActiveX but apart from that im lost.

I would be incredibly appreciative of any help from you guys as I obviously know absolutely nothing!

Solve : Direct X file missing?

Answer»

I use Windows XP service pack 2. And Direct X 9.0.

When I try run a few of my games I get an error message saying DX is not installed, or my video software is not up to date, and the program shuts down. I looked at my DX9 diagnostics and it says I'm missing the file 'd3dim700.dll', giving the message: The file d3dim700.dll is missing! - You should reinstall Direct X to get the latest version.

so, I reinstalled DX9 from one of my game cds (Dawn of War). And it still gives me the same message when I try to run games. I tried a few other game cds with DX9 on it and they just say it's already installed. What else can I do to fix this?

Get the latest version of DirectX by clicking here in Internet Explorer.
Hope this helps.already tried it.
dxwebsetup just says: installing components: initializing...
It stays on that for about ten minuets then gives me a message saying: setup could not download the file. Please retry LATER or check network connection.OK, try this instead (54Mb download, be warned).
It will download a file, open it and it will unzip the files to a location you choose.
Open the folder it creates and open setup.exe to install DirectX.nope. Did what you said and the file's still missing.

also, when I test Direct 3d I get this message: test failed at STEP 42 (query for D3D) HRESULT = 0x80004002 (no interface).Maybe I should try uninstalling and reinstalling DX. Can anyone recommend a reliable DX removal tool?

edit: come to think of it, I didn't start having these problems until I ran an issue scan with CCleaner. Could it be possible that scan removed the DX component? How WOULD I GO about fixing the registry if that was the case? I have two older reg files saved.i fixed it. I just downloaded the individual file and placed it in the systerm32 folder.

thanks for your help, Calum.Quote from: Titan01 on July 19, 2007, 11:58:50 AM

Solve : Tracing downloads on my computer?

Answer»

I have downloaded 550mb on a certain date and would like to find out what I downloaded. Is there any way I can trace what I downloaded?Where are you seeing you've downloaded those 550 mb? Unless you have some kind of monitoring software installed you can't see how much and what you've downloaded.I have a mobile phone data card and the download amount is stated on the bill and I would like to know what I downloaded.

Well like I stated in my PREVIOUS post, unless you've got software installed that specifically monitors this type of information there is no way to do what you want on a windows machine.

There are some firewalls that logs the amount of traffic that goes through them, so that might be a POSSIBILITY but I doubt you'll be able to see what you've downloaded.I don't know if this is relevent info but if you have vista there is a folder with downloads? just pointing it out there lol Do you use a download manager by any chance? That might make this a bit easier, depending on which one you use. If not, you could try JDiskReport. Its abilities are a bit LIMITED when it comes to this particular function, but it can at least help give you an idea. Once it scans, just click on the Top 100 TAB and then click on Newest.I don't know! How do I find out if I use a download manager? If you don't know what it is you most likely don't use one. It's a program that manages your downloads. It usually allows you to queue up files, put downloads on pause, stop downloads and resume them later to name a few common features.

If NON of these features sound familiar your not using one.

Solve : What's a good program for burning and playing music..?

Answer»

I'm looking for a program that will organize and play my music files and allow me to burn cd's and mp3's. What's the best for this? I've always used musicmatch jukebox but it always runs sluggish on my pc.

I have Windows XP on a Compaq pc by the way.

Thanks
AMandaWindows Media Player has always done a good job of organizing my music and stuff, but I usually use Nero for burning cds. Don't know if this helps but I figured I'd throw my 2 cents out there. Windows Media Player works FINE for burning music CDs, too.i would recommend Winamp, looks good, easy to use + many advanced settings can be used! Quote from: FilluX on July 19, 2007, 11:18:39 AM

i would recommend Winamp, looks good, easy to use + many advanced settings can be used!

I've used Winamp, and liked it. Only for playing music though. Never to burn. As far as navigation, creating playlists, etc., it worked fine.

After using Winamp, one day I saw MusicMatch on someone else's computer. Didn't like it.

Everyone has a personal favourite.
For me, it's Creative Mediasource or VLC to play my music, and usually Cyberlink Power2Go to burn it.
Creative Mediasource can also burn CDs.What version of MusicMatch do you have? Have you tried an older version? I've never updated to anything newer than 7.5.I prefer Limewire...simple & has free or pro depending on your needs.Quote from: edncaroline on July 19, 2007, 09:23:24 PM
I prefer Limewire...simple & has free or pro depending on your needs.

I'd have to disagree. If you are using Limewire then you are most likely downloading pirated data. We do not wish to encourage this; so for the OP to begin using this program after your recommendation then we'd have 'failed'.

Personally I use WMP11 for playing music. I don't burn music too often, though if i did I'd use WMP or Nero. For files that don't play on Vista I use VLC. But for me thats not too good at playing music, don't have a clue why, and I don't care because WMP is more user friendly in that regard anyway.I'm going to be burned at the stake for this, but here goes...

I like to use iTunes to rip CDs and convert them to MP3. Then I just use iTunes' burn function to make either audio or MP3 CDs. iTunes can be a bit of a resource hog, especially on slower machines with little RAM, but it serves my PURPOSES with music and podcasts nicely. I also get most of my music from the iTunes Store. Good quality music for cheap.I read a news report on foxnews.com recently that said they found out that itunes IMBEDS personal information on the tracks that you buy and stuff. It was a very interesting article, not sure if it's still on their website or not, should be cause it's not that old...Quote from: beanhead07 on July 20, 2007, 02:27:24 PM
I read a news report on foxnews.com recently that said they found out that itunes imbeds personal information on the tracks that you buy
That depends on whether you buy the "normal" tracks or the DRM-free tracks (for nearly double the price). Yeah, if you buy the normal ONES, some account information is embedded in the songs you buy. That's just how Apple's DRM works. The DRM protected WMA files you buy from Napster and Ruckus contain personal account information, too. The only problem with purchasing music from the iTunes Store is that it will not play on any other media player. For some REASON, Apple won't share it's DRM technology with the rest of the media world.

Solve : Problems with Norton Internet Security file ccSvcHst.exe?

Answer»

I have Norton Internet Security 2007 with AntiVirus 2007, fully updated through LiveUpdate

According to the Task MANAGER, the ccSvcHst.exe file frequently uses over 500MB of RAM and over 50% of my CPU usage.

My computer is custom-built.

This my system information:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core PROCESSOR 4600+ running at 2.4GHz
2GB of RAM
250GB Master drive with 120GB Slave
Intergrated sound car
Radeon x550 graphics card running dual monitors
As well as Norton I also run Spybot and Ad-aware, frequently updated.

unfortunately all Symantec Norton protection products, does use up a lot of resources in any computer installed with it, it is CONSTANTLY running in the background and unless you change the update TIMINGS, it will be constantly checking for updates all the time. A recent survey puts Norton at the TOP of resource hogs with McAfee a close second. if you want to keep using it you have to just accept the slow start up, slow internet browsing, you can type in "norton resource hog? " your browser and see the results for yourself, the other problem with norton is it is very difficult to remove without leaving bits behind, if you want to remove it, check the norton website for help full removal tools for your version, thats about the only good help they are giving nowadays. By they way both Norton 360 and Microsoft’s Windows Live One Care are almost identical in features and performance, and resource hunger.Yeah Aeshion you wont find many Norton fans on this board. It truly is a resource hungering monster.Sorry, but that seems like a very generic answer, I probably should have been more specific.

The other computer in the house is nearly same system with the exact same Norton installed but with a 2GHz Dual Core processor instead of 2.4, and it never has this problem.

The ccSvcHst file has occasionally used over 1GB of RAM.

This problem only occurs once per computer session, if I end process it auto-restarts but I don't have the problem until next computer restart.

I'm worried it may be a virus affecting it, but that's just a guess so I posted in Software.

Solve : Limewire problem...can't remove!?

Answer»

My Limewire icon is always in the start-up tray at the bottom right corner of my MONITOR. Left or right clicking on my mouse has no result. I uninstalled Limewire but the icon is still in the start-up tray. Cntrl, Alt, Del shows nothing is running & I went to Start, Run, Msconfig, Start-up to KEEP it from starting when I start but it doesn't show Limewire on the start-up.Everything I try to do with reinstalling Limewire fails because it sees the program running & says to close it before installing but I can't.
Please help!
Thanksunfortunately Limewire also install all sorts of software with it which also must be removed, I am sorry it is heavy going but it works:-
OPEN the LimeWire folder.
Open the folder UninstallerData.
Double click the Uninstall LimeWire icon (or something similar).
Follow the on screen prompts to uninstall the program.
Go to C:\Program Files and delete the LimeWire folder.

Set a System Restore Point, to prevent trouble if you make a mistake.
Go to Start, Run, type regedit in the box, and hit Enter.
At the top of the Registry Editor window, click on File, and then Export. In the Export range panel (at the bottom), click All, give the file a name, and then Save your registry as a backup to a location where you will be able to locate it easily if necessary.

Go to the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run. If you find the value HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run\limeshop, delete it and reboot the machine immediately.

Solve : End It All / Google desktop?

Answer»

This computer i'm on now has not been turned on in well over a MONTH. Besides all of the expected updates i got a message to update Google desktop which i did.

i USED End It All before defragging and noticed that there were two "Google desktops" listed. Ever since i installed Google desktop i noticed that my computer slowed down noticeably. Is it possible that instead of updating the program it downloaded a new version and i now have two running at the same time?

Anyone else notice that their computer slowed up with Google destop? i like the program but like a speedy computer better.

yes i did notice that. you should UNINSTALL it. Google desktop indexes your hard drives, so it will slow your computer down a fair amount.
You COULD use CCleaner and see if that lists more than one instance of Google Desktop in its uninstaller section.
Other than that, look in your processes, you may have more than one.

...Is there anything as simple for a windows computer (XP) or can I configer any microsoft program that comes in Works or Office to do the same. P

What version of Windows are you using?

For example, in Win98 under Accesories, there is an Address Book.
It has lots of fields in which you can enter info, INCLUDING a free form "Notes" AREA. You can search it.
Would accomplish whatever you WANT?
Assuming you are using XP, I would EXPECT it to have something similar available.

Regarding Works: Yes, it would do what you've described too. Load it up,
and play with the database stuff.

To me, it sounds like what you are asking for is a very plain database.

I hope this helps.

Solve : BIOS Flash questions...?

Answer»

Firstly, anyone flashed BIOS? Is it recommended?

Also, is it possible to flash my BIOS so I'll be able to use ECC RAM, as ATM I can't.

It's not that I really want the error correcting RAM in my machine, but I have a GB of it, and only 256MB of non parity RAM atm.

I don't wish to mix-and-match, just one or the other, and I got wondering if it was possible to update the BIOS (safely) to allow the use of ECC RAM.

I'm currently researching elsewhere (Google) but all input welcome, even if it is just a LINK to more info.

Thanks. If you are not having PROBLEMS with BIOS, don't flash it. As far as the different types of RAM, it depends on what the motherboard supports, not the BIOS. Though the BIOS ALLOWS timings to be changed, it you use RAM not supported by the motherboard, all is for naught.

Answer»

This is one that sure has me puzzled. Computer= Compaq Presario S3200NX. Operating System=XP-Pro. Modem =Smart Link 56k Voice Modem. Browser IEX Ver. 6.0.2800.1106.Outlook Express same as IEX.
On this particular computer it is normal for it to autonmatically disconnect from my ISP after periods variying between 2-3 minutes. What is the worst frustration (if that weren't bad enough) is that the monitor icon in the lower right corner near the time does not close when the connection is lost. My clue occurs when the message "WEB page cannot be displayed " occurs. Suggestions? truenorth
You should checkout your computer throgh a vrius software (quick HEAL) and I hope it can solve your problem.smritimoy,Thank you for the REPLY. I only use AVG free edition(been using it for years on many computers) i accept and revise the AVG updates usually daily.Scans of complete system indicate no problems of any kind. Do realize that some "bad guys" cannot always be found by all virus programs and none are perfect. But AVG has a very good reputation. Of course i cannot totally rule out your observation but i THINK it is highly unlikely to be the source of the problem.truenorth

Solve : Retrieving Outlook information?

Answer»

Hi

I have a problem - can anyone advise.

My computer died last week. I now have a new ONE. The hard drive is fine and is now operational VIA an enclosure, and most of the USEFUL material has been transferred.

However, I can't seem to access any of the emails, contacts betc which were there before when I used Outlook as my main email client. Is there any way of doing this? Please note, I'm not especially technically-wizardish

Thanks

Mike
With your old computer, did you ever export your Outlook data? Can you find any .pst files on that hard drive?Hi. I can't seem to find any via searching the drive. No, I don't recall exporting any Outlook files.I spoke too soon - I have found them (they were hidden). They are Outlook 2002 files. I have installed Outlook 2007 on the new computer.
Any advice?Take a look in Outlook's HELP. Look for "File types you can import or export" or SOMETHING similar. In Outlook 2003, Help says I can import .pst files from Outlook 97-2002. Surely, Outlook 2007 will allow you to import .pst data from earlier versions. Phew...its finally done, and all have now been transferred to Windows Mail!

Solve : Macro and Auto text in Word 2000?

Hi you all,

I use Word 2000 and Windows XP on my 3 NETWORKED machines.

I wrote numerous macros and autocorrects in Word on one MACHINE and would LIKE these SETTINGS to be copied to my other machines.

How do I do that ?

Thanks,

ClaudeRe: macros, open Visual Basic Editor by hitting Alt/F11 (with Word open). You should SEE your macros under Modules. Right click on a macro name there and select Export. Copy that file to your other computer, open Visual Basic Editor, right click on Modules and import the file(s) exported from the other computer.

Solve : How to Deny Someone From Forwarding An Email You've Sent Him?

Answer»

Hi Guys,

As the subject denotes, I would like to know whether it's possible to

deny someone from forwarding an email that I've sent him myself

earlier. In the sense that I have a file in PDF format which I need to

attach in this email but since the PDF file contains sensitive data, I

need ONLY the intended particular recipients to receive my email; in a

way that these same intended recipients won't be able to forward my

email to third parties. Similarly it's important that the recipients

won't be able to copy this file on their Hard Disk [C:] as then it will

be very easy for them to forward the file as a new attachment in a new

email.

Just to make it clear, the CONTENTS in the email itself are not a

problem if they are copied and FORWARDED; my concern is only the PDF

file attached, that is, how I can prevent the file I attached from

being distributed to non-intended recipients or to third parties.

The PDF file attached I need to send is already in READ ONLY format and

the recipients can't copy the contents by a simple COPY PASTE but my

concern is still the one mentioed above as presently they still can

forward my email to third parties.

In this regard, can someone help me out please? Maybe you know of a

setting I can do in my email account settings or a software which can

help me solve out my problem? Or maybe from Adobe Acrobat Professional

itself...

Just to let you know, preferably I'd like to use my GMAIL account to

send this email but please feel free if there's a solution related to

other email programs other than Web-based e-mail services like Gmail.

I thank you in advance for any comments and assistance.

Best Regards,

Corolla

I'm running Windows XP and the Firefox browser.

Here's my opinion. I think you should consider taking this entirely out of the Internet arena and use regular mail to send this sensitive document. You might also send it by certified mail, or whatever the Postal option is called that requires the recipient to sign for a mailing received and which results in a signed FORM being returned to you.

As you've said, you cannot technically prevent - as far as I know, that is true - the recipient from forwarding the PDF to someone ELSE. But, if, for some reason, you feel you must send the document in digital format, you could at least get an agreement from them not to distribute that PDF to anyone else before you send it to them. Again, do this BEFORE you send it to them. If they do not agree, then don't send it to them. If they agree but violate the agreement, you may have grounds for legal action against them.I don't know of way to this without using a third party service. You can send self destructing emails through them. A free service for this is http://www.kicknotes.com/. You might also want to google for BigString. It is more flexible and has more control.I sent a little test message to myself from http://www.kicknotes.com/ to see how it works. I set the message to self-destruct after one viewing and, indeed, I could only view it one time.

I SAW no option for attachments. So, you wouldn't be able to send a PDF by using this service. Also, note that the text in one of these messages can be copied and pasted into Word or whatever. corolla315, will you quit that hellaciously annoying double spacing!!!
Please contact with me I will tell you the soulutions.
Hi All,

Thanks a lot for your replies guys...I really appreciate...Actually I can't use a self-destructing option as that's not a solution for me - I want a particular intended recipient to keep the email on his PC-no prob. However what I don't want is not to be forwarded to 3rd parties I don't even know!

Thanks a lot anyway for all your help.

Best Regards,

Corolla

How to REALLY go about it???I don't think you can download the subtitles through VLC, but if you have the subtitles file (usually a .SRT file) you can import them by following these steps:

1) Open your VIDEO file in VLC
2) Right click on the video which is playing, go to “Miscellaneous” then “Preferences”
3) Click > video > Subtitles
4) Insert your subtitles file.
5) Wait for a few seconds.

Solve : Working on DVD files?

Answer»

After I recorded some videos using my DVD Camcorder onto a few discs, I would like to learn how to do something with the recordings:

1. How can I copy the recordings to HARDDISK so that I can watch them without the discs?

2. How can I edit the recordings (from more than one disc) and merge them? Let's say I want to make one disc out of THREE.

3. Any freewares capable to carry out the tasks above?

Thanks for any suggestion.Use Windows Movie Maker. You should be able to get the movies from the DVDS and you can merge them together. Thanks for your reply.

As for the playback, I read on the net that the .vob file is same with .mpeg file that if we rename it then it should be able to play on harddisk.
Anyway, when I rename the .vob files and play them, the original few minutes clips turn out to be merely a few seconds only.

Solve : looking for OS winxp SP2 themes to Vista themes?

Answer»

anyone got winxp sp2 with vista themes?
(without any program)As far as I KNOW, You cant have Vista themes on an XP computer. If it was POSSIBLE, you would need ANOTHER program.
Use the magic source GOOGLE to DEEP darker.Unless you do it manually, you're gonna need a program... There are some out there but from what I've read they can make XP unstable because they change so many system files.ya as i know if using any sofeware to change the theme
got few system file will be replaced (that why i dont want program)
any else ideal?Well, All the software would do is do everything for you RATHER than having to do it manually... So on that basis, you wouldn't be able to accomplish what I think you are wanting to, I don't think.

If you want to change the look of the start menu/taskbar etc then you will need to use software at some point.

Solve : Help with Ports COM1 and LPT1?

Answer»

OS winxpsp2
Ram 512mb
Intel celeron cpu
Phoenix bios
600 mhz

I recently changed my operating system from win98se to winxpsp2.
I saved the Files and settings from the 98se system using the Files and Settings Transfer wizard in winxp, removed the HDD with the 98se os, and installed a new 80gb, 7200, WD drive, and installed the winxpsp2 OS.
The instllation seemed to complete SUCCESSFULLY.
I then install my 98se files and settings with the transfer wizard, installed av and spyware programs, went to MS and activated the system, and downloaded and installed the updates (77 at this date).

My printer, lexmark 1100 color jetprinter worked fine with the 98se os.

I connected the printer, and at reboot, the printer was detected and windows proceeded with the installation . I did direct it to the newly downloaded XP driver. It seemed to install successfully, then asked if I wanted to PRINT a test page, I answered yes. The page did not print. The printer icon in the toolbar at the clock showed a red check, and when i click on it it indicated there was no communication to the printer.
I went to start> cp> printers and faxes, and the printer shows there with a black check indicating the default printer, Also, there was a file in the print que waiting to print.
I then went to the Device Manager> ports> COM1 and LPT1 and both had a yellow with black exclamation mark indicating a problem.
RIGHT clicked the COM1> properties, there was a "This Device Cannot Start" (code 10) message.
I Right clicked the LPT1 properties, there was a "This Device Is Disabled because The Firmware of The Device Did Not Give it The Required Resources" (code29)
At this point, I disconnected the printer, uninstalled the COM1 and LPT1 ports and rebooted. The "new hardware" was detected and reinstalled.
When I opened the Device Manager to the ports again, they were reinstalled but with the same error messages as before, with one exception, LPT1 was now shown as LPT3. (printer is still disconnected)
I repeated this uninstall, reboot and the reinstall with the same results as above indicated.
I did a debug port scan with the results as follows:
COM1- F 8 03, COM2- F8 02, COM3- E8 03, LPT1-78 03, LPT2-78 02,LPT3-BC 03
Which indicates the ports are being detected.

Can someone please help?
Thanks
Mitt
I'm not sure why that would be happening. Does this printer support a USB connection? I've found that it's a whole lot easier connecting a printer to a computer through a USB port rather than the old-school LPT1 ports. It's also faster especially with 2.0 ports. When I first installed the printer after getting a new computer with XP I tried using an LTP1 cable. I was unable to get anywhere with it so I tried using a USB cable instead and what do you KNOW, it worked. From what I've seen, XP doesn't work well with the old style ports. Can you try this. Go into the BIOS and disable the com port. Then change the type of LPT port. Try ECP or EPP or something. Tyr no interupt.. Reboot and see if XP does a new thing with the LPT port. After your re-install did you remember to re-install the MBoard drivers as well ? ?
If not try that.

If no joy joy remove one item at a time in Device Manager and re-boot to see if this clears things up.Lordvader
Thanks, excellent suggestion, but the printer does not accept USB connection.Patio;

With Lexmark printers, it is better to not let windows install the drivers. When windows detects new hardware, cancel out and use the Lexmark CD to install the drivers.

2k_dummy,
Thanks, but the Lexmark CD which I have is for win98, which
is why I downloaded the xp driver from Lexmark.
If the downloaded driver has its own install program, you can still use the same procedure. Just use the install program instead of the CD.Thanks to all:

I did go to the Bios, as suggested by dslgeek, they were enabled and setup as they should be per Pheonix (bios mfg) and MS.

I did find the resolution to the LPT1 problem;
There was a resources conflict with another program, Sound Blaster.
I removed both the printer and the sound blaster, then reinstalled the printer and driver. Windows assigned the proper resources to LPT1 and was able to print a test page. I then reinstalled the Sound Blaster program and it too was assigned the proper resources. All is well with LPT1.

The COM1 port problem is still in limbo, but as for now, it is not causing a problem.

Update:
The COM1 problem has been resolved by way of Bios configuration setting changes as follows:
Serial Port A--Change the setting from "Auto" to "Enabled"
Parallel Port--Change the setting from "Auto" to "Enabled"

Thanks to all who contributed to the resolution of this problem.

Solve : Where to save programs?

Answer»

"My Programs " on my C Drive contains 6.5GB, and I'm sure some of that is stuff I never/rarely use. I know I can uninstall most programs with either a built-in uninstall feature or Windows Add/Delete Programs utility. But what if I want to save them for possible future use? Can I move them to my external drive and still have them work when I open them? Any special requirements for doing that? Also, if I download a new program, can I save it on the external drive and have it function properly?Alright moving them once they are installed would be hard but maybe possible but then you would have to change some feathers. (I can't do that maybe someone ELSE can.)
But what I would do is uninstall them and reinstall them at a external drive then there wouldn't be any problem. I even run a program on my memory stick (2Gb).
When you install a program you will be asked where you want to save that program.
At default this would be "C:\program files\make of program\name of program" you can change this to whatever you want so you can change it to F:\Programs\name of program.
If you do it that way there won't be any problem but just moving them will not work with most of the programs.

Jonas Quote from: keithmacsd on July 12, 2007, 08:32:22 PM

As Jonas Wauters said, you need to uninstall the programs under the normal uninstall procedure and then reinstall them, specifying the external drive as the location for the program to be installed.

Also, be sure your external drive is always assigned the same drive letter when it's running. Otherwise, programs installed on it would not work; in other words, when a program is installed, Windows Registry gets updated and the path to program files is saved in the Registry. I would not un-install anything you don't have an installation CD for...Yes of cours but I think keithmacsd is aware of that, don't you?
If you aren't just don't do it if you want to keep the program.

Jonas Thanks, all. I've decided against "moving" any programs right now, because I ran CCleaner and picked up another 4.5GB of HDD space. That gives me about half of my 20GB drive free, and CCleaner also reduced "My Programs" by about 40%. Unless I do some heavy downloading in the future, I should be good to go for quite a while now.In the meantime take an inventory of all your Program CD's and organise them in to one location...always a good idea in case something goes wrong. Thanks, Patio; I've got them all in a little book with my recovery diskette. You're Welcome.
Another good approach is getting a software imaging program for your computer such as Acronis True Image or Ghost. The software creates an exact image of your hard drive at the TIME you run it.
This image can then be burned to CD/DVD for safekeeping and in the case of a SYSTEM failure or other problems you simply use it to RECREATE your system in one step.
Beats the heck out of having to re-install everything INCLUDING drivers, programs and system settings/preferences etc.

Well worth the money spent.

Good Luck to you and stop by anytime...

Solve : Multiple Problems With Both "Internet Explorer" and "Outlook Express"?

Answer»

My computer is a DELL Dimension 8200. My OS is Windows XP, Home Edition. My ISP is PeoplePC and I use a dial-up connection.

I am experiencing the following described problems with "Outlook Express" and with "Internet Explorer:"

Outlook Express:

When I ATTEMPT to use "Insert Picture" into the body of a new message by left clicking on the small BOX like icon, which contains mountains a rather large blank screen appears that has a blue border, white/blank interior, small red box with a white cross at the upper right corner (cancel facility) and the Internet Explorer icon (blue "e" with a gold band) at the upper left corner. There nothing about such screen that is functional and I remove it by left clicking on the red box with the white "x." As a consequence of these circumstances, I am unable to insert / embed a picture within e-mails that I prepare to be sent.

Internet Explorer:

At the "Internet Explorer" screen when I left click on the "Tools" button and then on the "Internet Options" button that appears in the drop down menu only a small screen that very, very quickly flashes and goes away appears. Consequently, I am unable to access / use those items contained in the "Internet Options" facility.
When my home page is booting up after I have connected to the internet, a script error screen appears that includes this, "res//ieframe.dll/navcancl.htm" that includes a provision for me to choose either "Yes" to continue or "No" and I choose "Yes" and this same script error screen then appears one to two more times and it is only after I have chosen "Yes" on each such screen am I finally at my home page.
I would sincerely appreciate HELP in resolving these issues..... dialup.... you have my sympathy. Do you have SP2 (Service Pack 2) for Windows XP installed? What protections are you using against viruses and spyware?

Have you been able insert pictures in the past? I gather you're getting a glimpse of this panel for inserting a picture but it's faulty:

Is that the panel you're referring to?

Yes, I do have SP2 installed and all Windows "patches" that have been made available by Microsoft.

With respect to virus protection, I am using AVG 7.5 FREE edition, which I make sure is updated daily. I am also running "SpyWare Blaster," "Spybot Search and Destroy," "Ad-Ware SE Personal" and "Crap Cleaner." I regularly and routinely check for updates for each of the applications on a weekly basis and run those that have that feature.

The screen you show concerning what I am missing with respect to attempting to insert a picture within an e-mail it the correct one, but I do NOT get even a flash of that screen. Instead, the blank screen I described appears. The small screen that appears very, verly briefly (just flashes) is with respect to what happens when I attempt to access "Internet Options" under the "Tools" provision of "Internet Explorer."
You maintenance regimen is good. Re: OE, again, Have you been able insert pictures in the past? When did this problem start?

Re: IE, here's a Google find on navcancl that looks worth careful reading: Windows Update killed IE7! navcancl & ieframe.dll error

Yes, I have been able to insert pictures in e-mail previously and did so routinely, with such pictures generally being animated GIFs.

These problems commenced at or about the recent event of my former ISP (AllVantage.COM) having apparently sold all of its dial-up accounts to PeoplePC. When I downloaded and installed the software from PeoplePC for using them as my ISP I had resulting problems. But, I am not certain at this JUNCTURE if those that I have described here appeared immediately upon my having downloaded and installed such software, except that I do recall that the script errors did immediately appear.

I have contacted PeoplePC's tech support more times than I can count concerning the script errors and have consequently followed their instructions to make changes in an attempt to correct the same. I am suspicious that one or more of the changes I was instructed to make by PeoplePC's tech support may have resulted in the other problems.

My last TELEPHONE conversation with a PeoplePC tech resulted in my having been told that my Internet Explorer 7 program was corrupted and that was the source / root of all of my problems. I have attempted to reinstall Internet Explorer 7 several times, but with no success. Such attempts always result in getting a message saying that the program could not be installed.

2- But if its a brand new word document , for example if click on word directly just before I do the "save as" to anywhere I can name it in that case,
3- but once its named - I can't change the name anymore
4- Also if right click on desktop and choose on new then choose a word document , I can't even type a name to name the document if I do give it a name a message pops up saying , document will be un usable if change name , it just will say underneath "new micorsoft word document.Doc -
So I don't even know whats in the word document , the next time I see it

I all started when I tried to change the word documents icon appearance in propertys > "customize" I may have done something I don't know what and I can't undo what ever it was I did - I tried MONKEYING around with word options and nothing helped and I can't fix it in the document shortcut icon>propertys> customize
My last options which I hate to do is more drastic - Un install Reinstall word or the repair option in word ?
Should I un install and re install word or can I fix it in word > options repair ?

Please help me, someone - I am really DESPERATE -- Thank you

I think I know what the problem is. Open up a folder (any folder) and go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab. Uncheck Hide extensions for known file types and click OK. Do you have any problems now?

Solve : Temp File Cleanup?

Answer»

My HARD drive is 99% full. My Local Settings file (in Documents and Settings) is nearly 6 GB, of which 1GB is in the Applications Data file, but most of the rest is in a file labelled Temp. I've deleted the items in that file that have the .tmp file designation, but the rest have other formats, such as all numbers and letters, application names or .dir00. I don't know whether I can safely delete those or not, even though they're all in a temp file. The Disk Cleanup utility in Windows XP doesn't identify that temp file as one to delete, but I need to get rid of something. You need more HDD space...i'm afraid just cleaning out the Temp folders won't be sufficient.
HDD's are pretty reasonable these days.
I'm suprised that machine even runs.
Windows recommends a minimum of 10% free space to operate properly.Quote from: keithmacsd on July 08, 2007, 08:43:43 PM

It's actually a temp folder. Folders contain files and sometimes more folders as well.

Shut down and restart the PC. Open the temp folder in Windows EXPLORER, choose detail view, which will easily allow you to see the "last modified" dates/times of the files and folders in your temp folder. Click on the date column header to arrange the files & folders in date order. You can delete everything with a date/time earlier than "today", in fact anything earlier than when you TURNED on the machine this time.

Also clear your recycle bin.

Get a portable hard drive and shift a load of stuff over to that - its usually movies and music which take up the space! He says 99% full. 99% of what, I want to know.

try install the registry medic.it is easy to use and it will erase all unnecessary files.registry medic is a Registry cleaner. Using a Registry cleaner can yield benefits such as improved performance but it's not going to make a significant difference in freeing up space on the hard drive. Or any difference at all, really.

Exactly how big is this HDD? You either need to do some major spring cleaning, or you need a bigger HDD.Here's an update. My HDD is 20GB and had only 800MB of free space. I bought a 500 GB external drive, partitioned it and backed up my entire system to it using Acronis. Then, after checking to be sure the temp file was there in the backup, I deleted everything in the temp file. Result: 4.5GB of free space on the C Drive, and everything seems to work properly. I guess you COULD say the problem is solved, at least for now. Thanks for all the input.

Solve : Can I Create a Pop-up Message in Microsoft Word (2003 version)??

Answer»

(what VERSION of Windows you are using) - I'm using Microsoft Windows XP Professional

service packs - not sure what this is

computer make/model - Dell Optiplex 320 w/ Intel Pentium D inside
RAM - not sure on this...I think 220
hard drive - about 140 GB,
sound and video cards - have never used so don't kow
current adware/spyware/virus programs being used on a regular basis - Norton
do you have a "real" Windows CD, etc. - yes we have an IT department that has them

My question is: is it possible to create pop-ups in a Microsoft Word (2003) DOCUMENT like you can do in FrontPage? If I want to provide a definition/description for a PARTICULAR word (or WORDS) but only allow the reader to see that if they hover their mouse over that word to bring the def/desc. up, how do I create that feature?

Thanks,
Jennifer

Solve : not a valid windows32 application?

Answer»

I wouldn't be posting unless at my wits end* I've read for 2 days now and cannot figure out my dumb problem.... I've tried Isobuster / windows update 4-hardware ie...my dvd hardware.... tried firmware updates at Samsung / installed & tried search & recover /

cannot install any new games on my puter ............ always.........

E:\ setup.exe

Only part of a ReadProcessMemory or WriteProcessMemory request was completed

[ could that mean my memory is bad? I have run benchmarks and it all looked ok?
this old man is too tired anymore fighting this, looking for the easy fix! Your brains !!

ps... my emachine puter can install and run games, what could I put on a thumb drive from that machine and install in my new one to make this go away ?maybe a possible solution with this I found "googling" this morning...will checkout later when I get home.....

"
Possible solution: (Worked for me)

I was getting this error with my HPDVD 630i (DVD writer) and HP instructed me to do this....

Go into your device manager->IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers. Right click on secondary and choose properties. Go to the advanced settings tab and choose PIO only for "transfer mode". I WOULD ensure that your drive is connected to the secondary controller first though.

I'm not sure why this works, but HP tech support had me try about 5 things and this one finally worked.

HP told me on several occations that they have compatability issues with Nero software. He said 1 and 100 will work with Nero.

Hoppe this helps."^ the above did not help my scenario ? Try Memtest to check your memory.
Download it, unzip it, burn it to a CD using the option to burn a disk image or similar.
Then boot from the CD and let it run, you'll SOON see if you have any memory issues.

Seems it's a common problem, with many possible solutions.
The one you mentioned was one, others I saw from a quick Google search included reinstalling Windows, buying a new drive, and some indicated a virus problem.I am almost 99.9 % sure it has nothing to do with memory (ram).......ran memtest & a few others after getting it all built...no "issues" on the test results.......
This is a missing file extension or an issue with these specific drives and or my windows installation...something ALONG those lines.... for a minute I thought I might have 64 bit windows installed but no....
it is something stupid which is creating this problem, the other thing I had been reading is a possible registry issue* I think it might be closer to that but not real sure ~ (goning to try my external Liteon dvd burner 2 nite via USB) and see if they will install with that..........Yeah, give your other drive a try and that will narrow it down at least. Please keep your eyes open on this if you see anything, I was unable to try anything last night, I'm sickPut that DVD drive in your eMachine and install a game with it...if it doesn't work return it for a replacement.
A bad firmware upgrade will cause this also.

Not to pick on him personally but the HP tech was way off base...PIO is the slowest file transfer mode of all...not exacrly what you want just to get a piece of hardware to work.as you can see Patio, i got two of these suckers at the egg.... oem

my TOP one installed windows ok, plays cd's but thats about it

I'll try that tonight or tomorrow thanks , I was reading a "few" reviews at the egg on these and a couple guys said your same type thing....they suck*

I did do a firmware update ...maybe that was it, how bout uninstalling the drivers and device,, might that help when I let windows try to recognize on a reboot ?Unfortunately firmware updates are irreversible.

Try the Lite-On brand...i've had great luck with them.10-4 I have their EZ-Dub (lite-on) external from wally world, I'll use that till the replacements come, I'm not sure if I can get a refund ? thanks for your help*I can't believe this.............. ummm I hadn't done the firmware update yet

revised * below

It figures with my luck~ didn't help

Solve : Dreamweaver 8 "Help" problem?

Answer»

Re: Dreamweaver 8.0.2 on Windows XP machines

Every time (and everywhere) I press "Help" I get the message: “Dreamweaver has encountered a problem and has to close.” This happens on both my laptop and my desktop.

I’ve removed the program and re-installed it onto my laptop thinking some files might have been missed or corrupted… same problem. Any ideas on what might be wrong and/or how I can solve it? Or, if not, where I might get the answer?

THANKS in advance! --Dennis
Is this a legitmate version of Dreamweaver and not a hacked version?

If legit...when you install it...it needs to have FTP access if you are uploading files. Is your firewall blocking it?

Have you updated it?I've had it for awhile (but hadn't used it) and I believe it's an educational version (above the serial number it says "DREAMWEAVER 8 ENG EDU"

For nearly a decade I've been using FrontPage but want to learn DW, and haven't built anything with it yet so I'm not sure that uploading and firewalls would be an issue at this point. When installing I simply followed the wizard and it never gave any indication that these were required, nor did it suggest that there was a problem with installation.

I just did an update for 8.0.2 and it didn't make any difference... still no "Dreamweaver Help" POSSIBLE under the Help menu.

DennisI do not know much about dreamweaver but IF the help page is a page online then it could be the firewall that's blocking the help feather.
What firewall do you have?

Jonas I don't believe the Help page is online, but I checked firewalls anyway. I've got my Windows firewall turned off, I've got Norton Personal Firewall (and turned it off temporarily) and the problem still OCCURRED. The only other one (I guess) is in my Linksys wireless ROUTER, but I have no idea how to even find that firewall, let alone turn it off. --DennisHave you tried Dreamweaver Support?

http://www.adobe.com/support/dreamweaver/I have tried Dreamweaver support, but found nothing there that was even remotely close to my problem.

Solve : OE 6 asking for password?

Answer»

I am on Win XP. I use OE 6 for email and when I check email I get a screen asking for my password. I don't want it to be password protected. The box for "save password" is checked and it doesn't save it. When I go into tools>accounts>properties>servers> my password is not SHOWN, even though I enter it, and check the save password box. I APPLY, get out of OE 6 and get back in and it asks for the password again. When I check properties, the PW is not there but the save PW is checked. I've TRIED deleteing the account and adding a new one but the same problem exists. All updates for Win XP and OE 6 are installed.Have a read here: Save password setting not retained in Outlook or Outlook Express. I suspect this applies to you.It WORKED! THANKS for the info!
Great! And, thanks for the feedback.
