Solve : Merging mails in a folder? |
Answer» It so happened, that out of interest, I SUBSCRIBED to a lot of GROUPS. The mails are piling up in respective FOLDERS(Outlook Express), all unread. I realized it is TAKING a lot of time to open and read all of them individually. Is there a way to merge all the files in a folder, to a single file, in whatever format it could be, so that when I open this single file I can read all the mails in a single shot? Is there a way to merge all the files in a folder, to a single file, in whatever format it could be, so that when I open this single file I can read all the mails in a single shot? No. |

Solve : Outlook crashes because of oversize email--can't use it long enough to fix!? |
Answer» I have Outlook, the version that comes in the OFFICE XP Standard suite. I sent an email yesterday that must have been too large, because the mailer-daemon response came through and the file size was 51MB!! This CAUSED Outlook to freeze, and I did "end program" using the task manager, but every time I try to RESTART Outlook it freezes before I can get any functionality out of it, i.e. to import a previous version of my inbox.pst, or to delete this gargantuan email. |

Solve : Trouble with one account using Divx and Musicmatch? |
Answer» I own a laptop and I made an ACCOUNT for my sister to use. Mines is the administrator account and hers is limited. When she tries to add tracks to the musicmatch LIBRARY a pop-up would say its already being used by another program. We'd check my account and its not even in my playlist but I have the song in my library. Also, whenever she tries to watch Divx videos online they never load, it just gets stuck on CONNECTING. The programs works fine on my account and hasn't given me any problems. So she has to use my account all the time to watch videos and LISTEN to music which defeats the purpose of having seperate accounts. |

Solve : What's a good program for burning and playing music..? |
Answer» I'm looking for a program that will organize and play my music files and allow me to burn cd's and mp3's. What's the best for this? I've always used musicmatch jukebox but it always runs sluggish on my pc. i would recommend Winamp, looks good, easy to use + many advanced settings can be used! I've used Winamp, and liked it. Only for playing music though. Never to burn. As far as navigation, creating playlists, etc., it worked fine. After using Winamp, one day I saw MusicMatch on someone else's computer. Didn't like it. Everyone has a personal favourite. For me, it's Creative Mediasource or VLC to play my music, and usually Cyberlink Power2Go to burn it. Creative Mediasource can also burn CDs.What version of MusicMatch do you have? Have you tried an older version? I've never updated to anything newer than 7.5.I prefer Limewire...simple & has free or pro depending on your needs.Quote from: edncaroline on July 19, 2007, 09:23:24 PM I prefer Limewire...simple & has free or pro depending on your needs. I'd have to disagree. If you are using Limewire then you are most likely downloading pirated data. We do not wish to encourage this; so for the OP to begin using this program after your recommendation then we'd have 'failed'. Personally I use WMP11 for playing music. I don't burn music too often, though if i did I'd use WMP or Nero. For files that don't play on Vista I use VLC. But for me thats not too good at playing music, don't have a clue why, and I don't care because WMP is more user friendly in that regard anyway.I'm going to be burned at the stake for this, but here goes... I like to use iTunes to rip CDs and convert them to MP3. Then I just use iTunes' burn function to make either audio or MP3 CDs. iTunes can be a bit of a resource hog, especially on slower machines with little RAM, but it serves my PURPOSES with music and podcasts nicely. I also get most of my music from the iTunes Store. Good quality music for cheap.I read a news report on foxnews.com recently that said they found out that itunes IMBEDS personal information on the tracks that you buy and stuff. It was a very interesting article, not sure if it's still on their website or not, should be cause it's not that old...Quote from: beanhead07 on July 20, 2007, 02:27:24 PM I read a news report on foxnews.com recently that said they found out that itunes imbeds personal information on the tracks that you buyThat depends on whether you buy the "normal" tracks or the DRM-free tracks (for nearly double the price). Yeah, if you buy the normal ONES, some account information is embedded in the songs you buy. That's just how Apple's DRM works. The DRM protected WMA files you buy from Napster and Ruckus contain personal account information, too. The only problem with purchasing music from the iTunes Store is that it will not play on any other media player. For some REASON, Apple won't share it's DRM technology with the rest of the media world. |

PI'm not sure what you're talking about. Have you tried a Google search on index card program? See: ...Is there anything as simple for a windows computer (XP) or can I configer any microsoft program that comes in Works or Office to do the same. P What version of Windows are you using? For example, in Win98 under Accesories, there is an Address Book. It has lots of fields in which you can enter info, INCLUDING a free form "Notes" AREA. You can search it. Would accomplish whatever you WANT? Assuming you are using XP, I would EXPECT it to have something similar available. Regarding Works: Yes, it would do what you've described too. Load it up, and play with the database stuff. To me, it sounds like what you are asking for is a very plain database. I hope this helps. |

Solve : Need a calendar with reminders? |
Answer» I was wondering if anyone knows of a good calendar program, in which reminders can be set each day, that I can put on my desktop? It doesn't necessarily have to be freeware. So, you want an email program that also has a calendar, right? Why not use Outlook for email, since you have it? Mainly because there are certain things that Outlook won't do that OE will Quote from: patio on July 14, 2007, 11:25:07 AM SunBird Thank you very much, I'll certainly give that a try You don't need to use the e-mail facilty in outlook in order to use the calendar. He has the Linux OS and I have XP Home so I'm not able to use the same one. I was just interested to see if there was something comparable. Thank you for your help ~ Judy I'm quite SURE such a feature is not standard in Outlook. However, an add-on feature called Quick Calendar might serve your requirements. Solve : Help with Ports COM1 and LPT1? |
Answer» OS winxpsp2 With Lexmark printers, it is better to not let windows install the drivers. When windows detects new hardware, cancel out and use the Lexmark CD to install the drivers. If the downloaded driver has its own install program, you can still use the same procedure. Just use the install program instead of the CD.Thanks to all: I did go to the Bios, as suggested by dslgeek, they were enabled and setup as they should be per Pheonix (bios mfg) and MS. I did find the resolution to the LPT1 problem; There was a resources conflict with another program, Sound Blaster. I removed both the printer and the sound blaster, then reinstalled the printer and driver. Windows assigned the proper resources to LPT1 and was able to print a test page. I then reinstalled the Sound Blaster program and it too was assigned the proper resources. All is well with LPT1. The COM1 port problem is still in limbo, but as for now, it is not causing a problem. Update: The COM1 problem has been resolved by way of Bios configuration setting changes as follows: Serial Port A--Change the setting from "Auto" to "Enabled" Parallel Port--Change the setting from "Auto" to "Enabled" Thanks to all who contributed to the resolution of this problem. Solve : Where to save programs? |
Answer» "My Programs " on my C Drive contains 6.5GB, and I'm sure some of that is stuff I never/rarely use. I know I can uninstall most programs with either a built-in uninstall feature or Windows Add/Delete Programs utility. But what if I want to save them for possible future use? Can I move them to my external drive and still have them work when I open them? Any special requirements for doing that? Also, if I download a new program, can I save it on the external drive and have it function properly?Alright moving them once they are installed would be hard but maybe possible but then you would have to change some feathers. (I can't do that maybe someone ELSE can.) Can I move them to my external drive and still have them work when I open them? Any special requirements for doing that? Also, if I download a new program, can I save it on the external drive and have it function properly? As Jonas Wauters said, you need to uninstall the programs under the normal uninstall procedure and then reinstall them, specifying the external drive as the location for the program to be installed. Also, be sure your external drive is always assigned the same drive letter when it's running. Otherwise, programs installed on it would not work; in other words, when a program is installed, Windows Registry gets updated and the path to program files is saved in the Registry. I would not un-install anything you don't have an installation CD for...Yes of cours but I think keithmacsd is aware of that, don't you? If you aren't just don't do it if you want to keep the program. Jonas Thanks, all. I've decided against "moving" any programs right now, because I ran CCleaner and picked up another 4.5GB of HDD space. That gives me about half of my 20GB drive free, and CCleaner also reduced "My Programs" by about 40%. Unless I do some heavy downloading in the future, I should be good to go for quite a while now.In the meantime take an inventory of all your Program CD's and organise them in to one location...always a good idea in case something goes wrong. Thanks, Patio; I've got them all in a little book with my recovery diskette. You're Welcome. Another good approach is getting a software imaging program for your computer such as Acronis True Image or Ghost. The software creates an exact image of your hard drive at the TIME you run it. This image can then be burned to CD/DVD for safekeeping and in the case of a SYSTEM failure or other problems you simply use it to RECREATE your system in one step. Beats the heck out of having to re-install everything INCLUDING drivers, programs and system settings/preferences etc. Well worth the money spent. Good Luck to you and stop by anytime... |

Solve : Temp File Cleanup? |
Answer» My HARD drive is 99% full. My Local Settings file (in Documents and Settings) is nearly 6 GB, of which 1GB is in the Applications Data file, but most of the rest is in a file labelled Temp. I've deleted the items in that file that have the .tmp file designation, but the rest have other formats, such as all numbers and letters, application names or .dir00. I don't know whether I can safely delete those or not, even though they're all in a temp file. The Disk Cleanup utility in Windows XP doesn't identify that temp file as one to delete, but I need to get rid of something. You need more HDD space...i'm afraid just cleaning out the Temp folders won't be sufficient. but most of the rest is in a file labelled Temp. I've deleted the items in that file that have the .tmp file designation, but the rest have other formats, such as all numbers and letters, application names or .dir00. I don't know whether I can safely delete those or not, even though they're all in a temp file. It's actually a temp folder. Folders contain files and sometimes more folders as well. Shut down and restart the PC. Open the temp folder in Windows EXPLORER, choose detail view, which will easily allow you to see the "last modified" dates/times of the files and folders in your temp folder. Click on the date column header to arrange the files & folders in date order. You can delete everything with a date/time earlier than "today", in fact anything earlier than when you TURNED on the machine this time. Also clear your recycle bin. Get a portable hard drive and shift a load of stuff over to that - its usually movies and music which take up the space! He says 99% full. 99% of what, I want to know. Using a Registry cleaner can yield benefits such as improved performance but it's not going to make a significant difference in freeing up space on the hard drive. Quote from: soybean on July 11, 2007, 06:51:08 PM it's not going to make a significant difference in freeing up space on the hard drive.Or any difference at all, really. Exactly how big is this HDD? You either need to do some major spring cleaning, or you need a bigger HDD.Here's an update. My HDD is 20GB and had only 800MB of free space. I bought a 500 GB external drive, partitioned it and backed up my entire system to it using Acronis. Then, after checking to be sure the temp file was there in the backup, I deleted everything in the temp file. Result: 4.5GB of free space on the C Drive, and everything seems to work properly. I guess you COULD say the problem is solved, at least for now. Thanks for all the input. |

Solve : OE 6 asking for password? |
Answer» I am on Win XP. I use OE 6 for email and when I check email I get a screen asking for my password. I don't want it to be password protected. The box for "save password" is checked and it doesn't save it. When I go into tools>accounts>properties>servers> my password is not SHOWN, even though I enter it, and check the save password box. I APPLY, get out of OE 6 and get back in and it asks for the password again. When I check properties, the PW is not there but the save PW is checked. I've TRIED deleteing the account and adding a new one but the same problem exists. All updates for Win XP and OE 6 are installed.Have a read here: Save password setting not retained in Outlook or Outlook Express. I suspect this applies to you.It WORKED! THANKS for the info! |
