Solve : Program to record screen output??

Answer»

I'm looking for a program to record whatever appears on the computer screen to a video file, mpeg2, avi, etc. I'm not looking for a keylogger. I want to create a training video of a new program we have at work. If possible, I would like to overlay an audio file/speech ONTO it (or maybe I could just run both at the same time). Is there something available that could do this, either software or hardware?

I was thinking of a USB PVR/TV Tuner card, but I wouldn't know how to overlay the audio, and there's the cost of the card itself.Ok you want hypercam.... http://www.hyperionics.com/hc/

Great Find Willy...Thanx !

You're welcome.

Ya like that, eh? It's PRETTY slick. I've only played with it though - not mastered it.

You can 'idiot-proof' something with a tool like that, huh?

Enjoy.

.I've used HyperCam and Wink.
I found Hypercam doesn't work too well on slower machines, but it's pretty useful.
Camstudio is another free option, and my personal choice, but Wink also works well.Hypercam works pretty good. The only complaint is the files are huge. 10 seconds is about 1 mb. Most of the size is from the audio portion. I tried with the lower SETTINGS, like 8 bit, but the audio came out staticky. I'll try the others.

Solve : Can't send e-mails in Thunderbird!?

Answer»

I have INSTALLED Mozilla THUNDERBIRD 2.0.0.5 recently (to go with Mozilla Firefox) and I decided to use it with my Windows Live Mail account. Now I have more SMTP servers on Thunderbird, and I am not sure how and why they are there. The first SMTP server is *********@hotmail.com, the second one is "WEBMAIL - localhost". When I send e-mails from my Windows Live account, it will return a sending FAILURE message and the message does not send. (Guess there's no reason to send a "Outgoing Server Test" message!). What should I do? Should I delete the "Webmail - localhost" server?

Thank you in advance.Click here.
Hope this helps.
Also, Thunderbird 2.0.0.6 has just been released, you should probably update ITUNDER Tools/Account Settings how do you have the default outgoing SMTP setup ? ?

i dont KNOW what a microsoft exchange email address is. i'm guessing a microsoft email address? i am using a "[emailprotected]" email address.
it is happening at home. What is an Exchange Server e-mail account?: "Home users typically do not have an Exchange Server e-mail account; instead they use a POP3 e-mail account with an Internet service provider (ISP)"

i just set it up about a week ago, so it's been doing this ever since.
i am definetly using a POP3 account and from reading that, i definetly dont have an exchange server.
i use my outlook for my email and everything else. i can send and receive mail fine.

Solve : Would win98 run in nowadays fast CPUs??

Answer»

Hi! I was just wandering... how would win98SE run in latest-tech machines (talk about dual core CPUs)? I mean will it run at all? I always liked win98SE rather than XP or Vista, but never tried it on anything faster than a P3 500mhz...
If it wouldnt work at all... then which would be the fastest hardware on which you could use Win98SE?

Thx in advance...
Well you've certainly piqued my interest although i haven't completed my dual-core build as of yet i've decided that will be the first OS it will see...
The only concern is of course driver issues but my board has yet to arrive.
Will let you know how HARD it crashes the first time...

From everything i've read WIN98 has to be tweaked for it to work but it maxes out at 1G of RAM...haven't seen anything on processor speeds though. I'm not even sure it will take full advantage of dual cores.

As to the OS issue you may want to give Win2k a try or check out a machine it's already installed on...very stable, not quite as many features as XP but a big step up from Win98.Quote from: patio on August 01, 2007, 05:05:57 PM

...

...

Somewhere in the depths of my old BRAIN, I'm getting the feeling that this is 512M, not 1G.
But I can't remember enough details to do anything more than toss this out there, and hope it is not too far off the mark. I'm sure you'll check around and find out.

I thought I had some good stuff on it in my bookmarks, and so far have found: http://www.dewassoc.com/support/win98/win9x_512memory.htm
but that is not the one that I was looking for.
If I COME across more sites/pages, I'll POST links.

Edit: some mention of it in this thread.

I wouldn't imagine Win98 supporting dual core, as even XP Home does not.
Not sure about any other issues, but drivers could be a problem with newer hardware, as could support.
As patio suggested, Win2k would be a good choice, it's fairly similar to 98 in look and feel from my point of view but better (again, only my opinion).

hi, i have a problem with the installshield wizard, basically installed a game a while back and when trying to uninstall it had a problem and although apparantly uninstalled is still listed on my add/remove programs list. i went to reinstall the game recently but CANT due to the fact that its already there, when i TRY to uninstall or repair it the installshield just closes. any HELP would b much appreciated! Welcome to CHF!
You could try Dloading Ccleaner and configure it like this.
Then run the issue part.
This will clear out the unwanted registry value.
Let us know if it worked.

Jonas I'm having the same problem with Peachtree software. I tried the CCleaner solution and configured it as suggested, but that did not resolve it. Tried to uninstall thru CCleaner but it ran into an error 1316.A I can't repair or uninstall thru the Peachtree CD because it says it doesn't find any Peachtree programs installed. When I try to install it from the CD it says that it is already installed. Any more suggestions to try?apbs it's usually best to start a new topic even if the problem may be SIMILAR...so it recieves the proper attention.
And Welcome Aboard !

Solve : Cannot restart Windows XP?

Answer»

I recently INSTALLED some antivirus updates but forgot to do a "restart". Instead I did a "shutdown". It said updating files 1 - 6 and then shutdown.

However, when I tried to start up the computer the next day, it got to the Windows XP screen but then it failed to bring up my desktop icons, etc. It just lingered there and did nothing. I tried doing a "safe MODE" start and it worked once and I was able to do a restart but it does the same thing...it fails to bring up my desktop icons and do a "normal start". Please help!! What anti-virus was it? Is it legal?
Instead of Safe Mode, did you try Last Known Good Configuration?I tried the "last known good configuration" but it did the same thing, it lingered there. The antivirus update was from McAfee.I meant to ask this in my last post...can you see your wallpaper and just not your icons? Or does Windows not even leave the Welcome screen?
Also, do you have an official Windows CD?

If you can see your wallpaper, hold down the Windows key and press R to bring up the Run screen. Type in explorer and click on OK. If this works, we then may need to determine what's preventing explorer from autostarting.

Also...if you have the Windows CD, press Windows + R again and type in SFC /scannow (note the space). Enter your CD when prompted.

If your computer doesn't leave the Welcome screen, the Windows CD may be needed. Try reading through this page...
http://www.ntcompatible.com/thread27472-1.html

Unfortunately, I have to take off for now, but give those a try, and some of our other members will SURELY come along with some of their own suggestions.Ok you answered that question , but you didn't answer whether it was legal or not........... and be honest whether it is legal , because if you lie then i cant tell you whats wrong , i cant help you install the files because the site is on a strict policy not to help with illegal software and i respect that ........but i can help you understand why it has done this , if your honest ..Yes, the software is legal. Also, I don't see the wallpaper or the icons. It's a blank screen which comes up.booting from the OS cd and copying the userinit.exe and wsaupdater.exe files seems to be the answer based on the aforementioned thread. That's what I would do anyways. At the moment, that's the only solution I can think of.If your windows Stuck after welcome Screen, Press Ctrl+Alt+Del then there will appear Task Manager, In Application Tab, Press new Task TAB in Right Bottom Corner, then write there EXPLORER.EXE in Creat New Task window...

Then Enjoy......... ALLAH HAFIZQuote from: endlevel on July 26, 2007, 02:20:08 AM

Solve : BSOD! Bad Driver?

Answer»

Hey, I recently installed a program onto my computer named alcohol 120%. During Installation Vista asked me if i wanted to install some driver so as you do i pressed yes. A couple of seconds later my screen became dark blue and came up with a long error message. It gives me about 1.5 seconds to read PART of it and then it restarts my computer. I am not even able to get into my user before it turns my screen blue. Any help guys?
Thankyou, SkateDid you download this file via a torrent by any chance ...

Tony It was on Rapidshare.com as i was unable to download it from the official website. The program was Alcohol 120%yh im 99.9& you have a virus..... i have my sources ..... and im pretty sure this was downloaded illegally as well....

Site rules : sorry .....

Tony Ok guys. Sorry about double post. I managed to Force Shutdown Vista during startup and it when i rebooted it asked me if i wanted to repair. I am now doing a system restore to before i installed this 'Driver'. Lets SEE what happens. If it don't WORK i know how to reformat. It didn't work. Solve : Windows MovieMaker - poor quality output?

Answer»

I edit video clips (.avi from my digicam) in MovieMaker - clips usually 2-3 minutes long. Exported .wmv quality is never very good but is particularly bad if some of the "heavier" transitions are USED; pixelation etc. The sequences become very jumpy and pixelation seems very high for FILE sizes of around 15Mb.
I'm running XP and the individual .avi clips are very good quality, i.e. nothing to do with my camera.
Is it just that MovieMaker is poor? I don't want to spend money on software because this is just a sideline hobby; the clips are POSTED on YouTube.
Are there better, ideally free, alternatives? Or is there something I can do to improve output quality?
PS: To see an example, if you find user Fuquit69 and look for a "BriSCA F1 Semi-Final 2007" file (easy - I've got about 5 clips in total!) you'll see what I mean about the quality.Have you tried to use a different quality setting when saving the finished MOVIE? On the page after you SELECT a name for your movie and where to save it, there is a blue link called "show me more choices..." under a radio button with the text "Best quality for playback..."
Try different options and see what gives the best result.

Solve : PDF download - how to stop???

Answer»

I want to browse a very long document which is in PDF format.

The website with this document has a box with "View/download PDF", and I presumed that the option was to view, and if required, to download. When I click this box the opening page duly appears - with a box in the right hand corner of the screen showing a download record bar with the download apparently in full swing. I don't want this download, but I can't figure out how to stop it except to exit the website.

Any suggestions please?I should have said - I have Adobe Reader 8 and Windows XP SP2Just out of curiosity, why are you not wanting it to download? If you're worried about space on your computer you could always download it and just delete it when you are FINISHED with it. Or is there another reason you don't want to download it?Thanks for your interest beanhead07 -

I have no special reason for not downloading, and I did think of just doing that. The document concerned is a translation of a historical document and, as I said, is very long (3 parts and some 1600 pages, total file size 70 mb), and I just thought it rather excessive for the sake of looking at a few pages.

I've not come across this seemingly AUTOMATIC and immediate download feature before.Wow, that is a huge file, I understand why you don't want to download it just to see a few pages. So when you click on the link to download it it doesn't even come up with a window with options to "view" or "download"? It just starts downloading? If you right click on the link does it give you any different options?Quote from: silkie on July 31, 2007, 01:31:33 AM

I've not come across this seemingly automatic and immediate download feature before.
Are you saying you've viewed other PDF documents on the Internet where the whole document did not automatically download? Can you give an EXAMPLE? I just looked at a 799 page TAX publication from the IRS website. The entire document downloaded as soon as I displayed it in my browser; I had no control over that.To see it on your screen it has to be downloaded one way or another (no such THING as a free lunch) so it's probably best for you to right click and save it to your disk then open later with Foxit of course.
Google Foxit, you and your computer will be much happier. Yep. Unfortunately, if he only wanted to view the first few pages of a 1600 page document, there's no way to limit the downloading to what's actually needed. Thanks for all replies.

soybean -
I must admit that I can't recall ever having looked at a PDF file before - I assumed that there would be an option to download. In this case the download started as soon as the page displayed, as in your own example, with no control. I gather from what you've said that this is the way PDF works.

Fed -
Clicking r or l anywhere on the page brought no response (except the Adobe options).

My interest in the document (a facsimile of a 3 volume book: "History of the English", Online Books) is not very serious - curiosity really - and I would have liked to browse.

You need to right click on the link to the page to get the options.

Right. It's worth noting here that the document you were viewing is an extreme case; it's an extremely large, even for 1600 pages. The 799-page tax document I mentioned was about 3.6MB. The document you were viewing must be heavily laden with graphics or a lot of some type of content that results in much bigger files than only text. If the document you were viewing had a file size in direct proportion to the one I was viewing, it would be about 7.2MB, not 70MB.

Thanks for the tip.
I think I've got what you mean - I save the link to disk and then use Foxit to open and download?soybean -
Just seen your post, thanks.

I'm now wondering if I've got the size right! I'm sure it quoted 26-28 mb for each of the 3 volumes.Quote
I think I've got what you mean - I save the link to disk and then use Foxit to open and download?
Download and install Foxit and set it as your default PDF viewer or continue using Adobe, either way the following is the same.
The Foxit download is tiny.

When you left click a PDF LINK using IE it will open the Foxit viewer.
When you right click PDF LINK using IE it will give the you option of opening the PDF file or saving it to disk.
I always save them to my desktop first.

Adobe is bloatware IMHO.Fed -

Solve : Outlook Express - Error 0x800CCC19?

Answer»

Please can someone help me, I work for the NHS and I am trying to fix outlook express! Our NHS help desk won't fix the problem and want me to use another program!! (But I like Outlook express!)

I KEEP GETTING the following error message when trying to send an e-mail:

A time-out occurred while communicating with the server. Account: 'IMAPMAIL1.NHS.NET', Server: 'SMTP1.NHS.NET', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 587, Secure(SSL): Yes, Error Number: 0x800CCC19

This only happens when I try to send messages, I receive them OK!

I have been trying to fix this for over a week now, and I have tried:

Installing SP2 (as advised)
Turning off the Virus checker (Sophos)
Deleting the account, then putting it back on again
Checking all the details are correct (it works perectly well on another computer)

this is all very fustrating as the account used to work perfectly, but it just stopped!

I hope someone can help before I throw the computer out of the window!

thanx
Alex

Try the above suggested fix.

Most other sites suggest this is a virus program generated error. I note you have tried turning off your AV protection. Try LEAVING it running and disabling the scanning of emails. Also you could have an email with a large attachment stuck on your server, contact your admin and ask them to empty your emails on the server, and then send yourself a test email. This may be worth a careful reading: How to troubleshoot error messages that you receive when try to send and receive e-mail in Outlook and in Outlook Express

Try this:

You can download a simple MS-DOS Boot disc http://www.bootdisk.com/

Turn Laptop off.
Insert Bootdisk
Turn PC back on and you should get MS-DOS message and A:\ Prompt.
I all is OK. Type SYS C and press enter.
remove diskette and turn off.
Turn Laptop back on and it should now boot to the C:\ Prompt.

Read the notes on the Bootdisk Project page on how to create a bootdisk.Okay.. ill do that.Ive just left the pc on for a few mins but it goes to the screen with all the options:
Start windows with safe mode etc.

But there like a 30 sec countdown that automatically 'Starts Windows' and it just keeps restartingOkay.. now im about to try your second idea

Please specify a floppy drive to copy the images to:

But my laptop doesnt have a floppy drive.Quote from: Richenstony on July 30, 2007, 03:49:41 AM

I've tried Ccleaner CHKDSK /X /F and SFC /scannow.
I checked gpedit.msc But I didn't find anything at shutdown.
Thanks in advance

Solve : Audio cd's won't burn correctly?

Answer»

My computer will not let me burn cd's, and I have no clue why. When I try to burn a cd with Windows media player, a message pops up after 1 or TWO songs have been written, and says that I should choose a slower RECORDING speed. I have tried all of the recording speeds that WMP allows, and I have tried using itunes, Realplayer, and other PROGRAMS to write the cd but nothing works.

I use I use Sony Supremas CD-R 700 MB discs, and I do not have the option of using a different brand of discs. My computer is a Dell dimension 8110, windows xp, Celeron D.Do you GET the same pop up message with the other BURNING programs as well? I usually use Nero. What other ones have you tried?I don't get the same error message, but I do get an error message withe very program. I'm not sure which programs I used, but I used at least 4, other than the ones I listed. Quote

I do not have the option of using a different brand of discs.

Why not ? ?

Solve : add remove programs is all messed up?

Answer»

My computer was running really slow and not booting up so I took it downtown to the "fix it " place and they GOT it up and running. BUT when I go to control panel and add or remove programs, there is a strange LIST of things in there I haven't seen before and when I click on anything, the remove or change buttons do not show up so I can't get rid of anything. What do you think can be the matter? Welcome to the CH forums.

Perhaps the guys at the "fix-it" place installed a whole heap of progs to assist their efforts. Post a few of the names you don't recognize and someone will try to identify them for you - then maybe you can delete them...

Which operating system is installed?

Also, as Dusty stated, a few names of those programs would be helpful.I am running windows xp home. Here are a few of the weird things in there:
ccPxyCore
Copy
CP_PLS Business
BufferChm
CueTour
Distnation
esupportPfolder
1310
1310 tour

I have an HP 1315 all in one printer that is not hooked up at this time. this is just a few of the things in there. It did have like "shrekcards", ETC in there but I deleted them with my ccleaner utility.Do you have an HP computer. Some of the items you LISTED seem to be related to HP Image Zone.yesQuilter - It's way past time when you should have given details of your system, it's gonna be very difficult to advise you if your only response to a question like "Do you have an HP computer?" is a vague YES.

So come on, lay it on us:
What is the model number?
What hardware is installed, floppy drive, dvd/cdr, scanner, etc.?
Is your hard drive partitioned?
Do you have a genuine full cd of your operating system from which you can re-install?
What software is installed, which anti-virus, which third-party firewall, any other protection?
Anything else you care to tell us about your pc, how old is it?

Most, if not all, the questionable entries in your Add/Remove should not be there but should reside in Program File FOLDERS. For example ccPxyCore is reported as part of the Norton Anti-virus suite. The problems with your pc slowing was possibly due to it being heavily infected by malware which has done the dirty on you. This possibility is supported by many reported instances of the same thing happening on web forums.

First - and most important - do you have files on your hard drive which you need to backup, data files may be lost during any recovery process and the end result for you may be to re-format your hard drive and re-install XP..

sorry I have not given enough information. My dog has been having major grand mal seizures and I am about to leave to have him put to sleep, so this issue will have to be put aside. sorry...

Solve : What antivirus program would you use??

Answer»

I use AVG Free Edition as it doesn't bug me to log on as an administrator like Norton Internet Security does. Instead, AVG gives you a prompt for 30 seconds, if you don't tell it what to do, it sends it to the virus vault. Plus - it DOESN'T hog my memory!I chose option z, NOD32. Light, fast, high virus detection rate and rootkit detection as well. It isn't free though, but cheaper than the big names like SYMANTEC and McAfee.I don't use any
anti-virus program , i use my will-power to KEEP them AWAY!!!

Ohh really Richi!!Is that true?
It is a big achievment.Congrate.

Solve : Adobe GoLive CS2 problem?

Answer»

Hello,
I have a dog magazine online and have been using GoLive5 on Windows 2000 to prepare the page layouts in printed magazine style. I have just bought a new computer and UPGRADED my GoLive5 to GoLive CS2, running on Windows XP Pro and Firefox 2. I have just finished the NEXT issue and it is ready to make accessible
except for one thing - the pictures disappear from view when I upload.
I have sometimes had a problem with pics not appearing in the old program when uploaded if I have put the pics in the wrong folder, but this time that is not the problem as I have checked it three times. I know it is probably something I am doing wrong as I am as yet unfamiliar with the CS2 version, and wonder if it can
be something to do with the character encodings? Or would that have no
effect on pictures? I use Ipswich FTP Pro to upload - could there perhaps be
a compatibility problem? I am running out of things to try and am certainly
no expert! Can anyone help or point me in the right direction? I tried comparing the page source FILES in the old and new versions and they seemed to be completely different. Thanks - Ziggy I am in the strange position of having found a solution to the above problem but am still in NEED of advice. The 'source' code of my pages revealed that the images were sourced to my C drive instead of a 'virtual' drive that can be viewed on the website. What do I do to make the photoshop CS2 images import to my page layouts as 'virtual' (the source file would need to drop the first part of the address as my C drive)?
Second, the source files also SHOWED that the meta tags are being integrated with the page source files - either I will have to stop them doing that, or open my page template as an inserted/included document - how do I do that? - Ziggy

Solve : Registry Backup Software - recommendations??

Answer»

I was going to download ERUNT but it's apparently not compatible with Windows ME so I was wondering if anybody had any other suggestions. Why do you want a third-party registry backup program when Scanregw is built-in and can be automatic? See here and here..

Good luckI did what it told me but nothing CAME up after typing in scanregw while in RUN...Most unusual - did you click on OK after typing Scanregw?

Was an error message displayed?Type "regedit" in Run. Go to FILE, then export, then choose the location where you want to save your backup.Comp Guy's solution worked actually (thank you very much BTW), but still, there was no error message or anything of the SORT... and i did indeed click OK...TK92 - To check the info I gave you I installed Windows Me and ran Scanregw without difficulty, also checked it out on Windows 98.

Thanks for coming back with your info and glad that Comp Guy's backup method suits you.

Solve : Excel 2000, I'm new to this one?

Answer»

need help with the COMPANIES software (they're not up to date). I need to count the total number of "n" in column c that correspond to specific numbers (i.e. '48' or '24' ect.) in column b. column b cannot be ORGANIZED, the numbers will occur randomly. I don't have access to any addin WIZARDS either. is this possible to do?Does this help?:

I was actually able to figure out that much (being the dope that I am) but column c contains y and n (yes and no) and I need a total count of the n('s) that correspond to the designated number in column b (same row)

Your LAYOUT still isn't clear to me. You have numbers in col. b. Column c contains y and n (yes and no), so column c is taken, right? Do you want the counts of the number of occurrences of certain values in column b, in column d?I need a count of occurances in column c that correspond to numbers in column b. this count total goes at BOTTOM of c. did I say that right?I sense a bit of an attitude here. The forum is here to provide free help. No body gets paid for taking time to respond to questions. I think I'll not continue this discussion. My bust and most sincere appologies, no attitude intended, I am sorry if it came off that way, it was not intended to. I am in construction, field work mostly, very little computer stuff. I also have a dry sense of humor (according to my wife). Again, I am sorry and did not mean to insult or degrade anyone. Not sure if it's right, but it works:

=sum(if(range=#,if(range="n",1,0))) then control+shift+enter

Is that what they call an array? (serious question).OK, got your PM; no problem re: my previous concerns.

I believe the formula you posted in a nested formula, not an array, although control+shift+enter is used to enter array formulas. I really haven't delved into array formulas. A nested formula is indicated when you have one function embedded in another, such as an IF function within another IF function, as you have done.

Does that formula seem to be working for you?

Works great! does what I needed, but I did have to enter as an array. not sure why, but I do beleive that "if it ain't broke..." I think, not sure, that the array had to be used becuase of the mix of letters and numbers. that or this machine doesn't like me. thanks for the help.

Solve : File Attributes Error Message?

Answer»

I hadn't restarted my computer for about a week (I would just put it into standby). During that time I did download and install programs, but they are all legitamite free programs. So anyway, I restarted my computer, and had a little trouble getting Windows to boot. I changed the POST to do a thorough hardware scan, and my computer booted fine. Everything works fine, except for the Dell Quickset program, for which the error message below comes up. I tryed USING the Dell Utillities CD to reinstall the program, but when doing the initial installation for the CD, the same TYPE of error message (Error getting file attributes) popped up. I don't know what this error is, so any help would be greaty appreciated.

Solve : Outlook 2002 and HTML?

Answer» EVEN though, in the opitons, I have selected HTML for pagesetup for outgoing messages, any may I want to answer opens in plain text (in Word). If I want to answer, I have to open a blank page (it opens in HTML format) and copy and past the original message I want to answer to this BLANC page.

Does anyone have any idea what is wrong here?I'm using Outlook 2003, so yours may be different. Do have this menu sequence, Tools, Options, E-MAIL Options (a button)? If so, and you click on E-mail Options, do you see an option to "Read all standard mail in plain text"? If so, unselect it an save. Does that work?Hello SOYBEAN. Thank you for answering. Nope, the option "Read all standard mail in plain text" is not present in Outlook 2002. There are three options available for page setup: html, RTF or plain text. I selected html. Next there are two other options:
- Use Microsoft Word for e-mail messages.
- Use Microsoft Word to read messages in RTF format.
I CHECKED both. Have you checked with any recipients to see if the emails are arriving in HTML style ? ?Yes, they do arrive in html format

Solve : Flashplayer 9 not working on a sub-account...?

Answer»

I'm in a bit of a predicament involving Adobe Flashplayer 9 and most likely Norton Anti-virus.

Note: I'm running Windows XP, Internet Explorer, with Norton-Antivirus software.

I found a way to install the Flashplayer, and it now works wonderfully...only on the computer's main/administrative account, however. My account (a sub-account that also has administrative listing) is in a muddle. Most applications on the internet don't work (drop-down menues, Youtube videos), among other things. I can no longer use the "Find on Page" option without getting a blank popup that says "Internet Explorer Script Error" that refuses to close unless I cntrl-alt-delete it. The same happens when I OPEN my Corel Painter program, which has nothing to do with the internet.

And this is all on only one account. Strange thing is as well...I installed the flashplayer while logged on to my account, not the main one.

I have a feeling that Norton Antivirus is behind some portion of this, and I can't FIGURE out how to turn it off without completely removing the program, which my dad would not be happy about.

And so, as a little non-computer-savvy teen, I beg for help. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

-The attatched image is of the blank error message.

[Saving disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]Sounds like the account itself is having problems as there are more than one issue...try CREATING a new account and see. If it runs FINE just delete the old one.I created a new account, but it had the same issues. I might end up simply running the computer on one account if this keeps up. I'm asking all over the internet for anyone that has any ideas. If a solution pops up I'll post it here.

Solve : All WMA files incorrectly marked as "protected content"?

Answer»

Hi All, hope someone can help a not-too-pc-savvy type:

I recently loaded up my CD collection onto a hard DRIVE in preparation for an overseas posting as I didnt want to lug 500++ albums halfway around the planet. I used the Media PLayer on line service to pull down the track listings where available.

At first Media Player would not let me play many of my wma files, insisting I needed a licence. I seem to remember choosing an option to download a licence initially, and only then being able to play them. On trying to do anything with about half my wma files (aside from playing them in Media Player ), I get a message "Protected Content". On checking the "Properties" section is reads the WMA files are all protected. I do not know if this is what is referred to as "DRM" protection or not.

Please note about half of the 4,500 wma files are now marked protected, the remainder are not. It affects whole albums (ie an album is either entirely protected or entirely unprotected)

This is particularly annoying because many of them are old vinyl JAZZ albums I burnt to CD myself (and still own the originals!!!) Even more galling is that some of them are my own recordings of myself (i am a wannabe muso). So I cant load them onto my MP3 player or load them into Audacity for doing some "mashups" for my own amusement. Te remainder are largely older CDs with no protection on them.

Someone out there needs their backside whupped. I am Royally p......ed off as all my music is in storage and I wont be accessing it for at least 5 years (far too long to go WITHOUT any ZOOT Sims or Sonny Stitt on my MP3).

Ive never bought music online (and am even less likely to do so now!), so there should be no protected content on there (well maybe one or two snuck on from a friends CD, it is possible). Most CDs were burnt/pressed before copy protection and on line licencing were even concepts.

I was using XP to load up the music. I now have Media Player 11 but do not know what version I used to load up initially. Im now on XP Professional,on a laptop Centrino dual core 1.6Mhz CPU, 1 MB Ram. The hard drive is connected via a USB cable - 80Gig (sorry dont know the brand)

If someone could shed some light on how to correct this I will be indebted. I tried to find a prog called "FairPlay" or similar but all links I tried were invalid.

Thanking you in advance! Just did another check: it is ALL my wma files on my harddrive that are tagged as protected - even the stuff I burnt onto the original CDs myself.

There are a bunch of MP3 files that are unprotected.

Can anyone pls advise how to remove this protection tag?

Solve : Word Pad / Word default problem?

Answer»

Word pad seems to be all that i need for most of the word processing that i do. Can i set word pad as the default program to open when i double click a doc icon that is created in word pad but my computer wants to open it in word and remind me that my 30 or 60 free subscription has expired and i wind up closing out of the doc and reopening by right clicking and chosing "open with this"....this is such a pain and when i'm in a hurry which is most of the time i forget to open with a right click.

Office is not that special to pay for it on every computer that i have. And in one case i typed in the wrong oem code and never got to use my 60 free days. Not a big fan of being held hostage for ransome by MS.

Isn't there a free version of a word like program that recognizes word and it opens a whole suite of programs similar to office?Just right click the icon on your desktop and select Open with...

You can select which program you want to have open this type of document by selecting it from the list of available programs.Quote from: The Saviour on July 06, 2007, 07:36:05 AM

Yes, but it be set as the default program to open all word documents?WordPad and Word are two different animals.

Since you're telling us your Office free trial has expired...and WordPad is what you basically use as your word processor, then all you need to do is create your document in WordPad and then save it to wherever.

You then select WordPad to open that document by doing what was said in the previous post.

Since your Office Word program trial is over...you can ALSO open those documents using WordPad as well. You just have to let the computer know that...again...following the same step as described in the previous post.

Either I'm missing something or not fully understanding your issue.Quote from: Kryptonite on July 06, 2007, 06:57:41 AM

Yes, OpenOffice.org. Another option for a freeware word processor that will open Word documents (note: this might not work with Word 2007 documents) is AbiWord.

Actually, I'm not sure OpenOffice will recognize Word 2007 files, i.e. saved in Word 2007 format. I'm surprised you can open them with WordPad. But, since you can do so, I agree with The Savior about opening them in WordPad and saving in a format that will then open in WordPad and not prompt you to choose a program with which to open it.Quote from: The Saviour on July 06, 2007, 12:38:55 PM

[ an ASIDE but related: i had a house fire several months ago and there have been problems with everything associated with owning a house since that time...the electric company wants me to write a letter explaining that i had a fire and that i want my electric turned off, so does the gas company, so does the insurance comapny, so does the town, and so on. Everytime i'm asked to write a letter it baffles me that a phone call is not enough to say "turn off everything cause the house is gone". i KEEP thinking it's all a bad joke or bad dream that's saying what is requested on the phone is not enough to get the job done. So i write a letter and they ask for proof but don't say what proof might be....so here i am several months after the fire still writing letters. ]

If i recall correctly in Win 98 there was a chooice when selecting "Open with" to always associate this command with this icon. No such option that i can find exists in XP to do that. If a document is created in word pad the icon is exactly the same as Office/word. So simply double clicking always leads to the doc opening with office/word where it TELLS me that my trial is over and if i want to buy....etc etc, which i do not want to buy. All i want to do is to always associate that icon with word pad so on THIS computer it will open with word pad. If i take a copy of the document on a CD or jump drive to another person's house who has office on their computer then let it open in office/word. i just HATE the extra steps that i have to go through to open a document that was created in the free word pad program.
Maybe what i'm asking for is not possible with a PC or with XP. That's why i'm asking here. i appreciate all of the suggestions but i already know about right clicking and chosing "open with" i just want to change the rules so i can simpley double click and have it open in word pad, not office/word.

Sorry if this is such an unusual request or that i'm explaining it wrong. Quote from: Kryptonite on July 07, 2007, 05:50:36 AM

Wrong. "Open with" is available in XP. Open an Explorer window, locate one of your files, right click and select "Open with".

Solve : Outlook problem when alternating between two ISPs?

Answer»

Hi There,

I am using Windows XP and Outlook 2002. I have a wireless ISP which I use at work (Let's say ISP "A") and an ADSL2 connection at home (Let's say ISP "B"). I also have TWO email addresses A and B and two email accounts A and B.

If I am on ISP A I have to physically set email account A as the default in Outlook. Then when I am on ISP B I have to set the emai account B as the default. If I do not do this (or often forget to do it), the emails are not sent.

If I TRY to send an email when the default is set to the other account the email will not be sent and I get a system error message which says "Relaying denied. IP name possibly forged" followed by an IP Address.

Also if I am on ISP A and I receive an email through Account B, if I try to reply to it I get an error message similar to the one stated above.

What settings do I have to use on my email accounts or elsewhere so that I can send and receive emails irrespective of which ISP I am on and which account is set as the default account.

Any help would be much appreciated.

This is a confusing scenario.

If you have a default ISP for outlook, it will always try to use that ISP. It won't manually look for another. You'll always have to change the settings.

If I'm not mistaken, outlook (and your server for that matter) will only accept that you have one IP address at any given time.

Correct me if I'm wrong on this guys.
Yes you are right. As I said, I have to reset the default to the ISP that I am on in order to send emails. I would like to know if there is a setting so that I do not have to keep switching the default and can send emails irrespective of which ISP I was on.

Also if I am on ISP A and I receive an email on my B account, I am not able to reply to it until I log on to my B Account.I don't actually think the problem lies with Outlook but rather your ISPs. See MANY ISPs only allow users who belong to that particular ISP to use their outgoing email server. So when your are on ISP A and trying to reply to an email sent to your ISP B mail account, outlook will contact the outgoing email server for ISP B. But since your on ISP A, ISP B will not allow you to send mail through their server.

One solution would be to setup both email accounts to use a neutral server to send mail. Gmail for example can be setup to send and recieve email in Outlook.
But all email sent through Gmail is rewritten so that it looks like it's send from your Gmail account. So for anyone receiving a mail sent this way, the mail will have a Gmail email address in the 'from' field instead of one of the two email addresses you have now.

But maybe someone else knows a BETTER solution or an outgoing mail server that allows you to do this without it changing the email address. Thanks Deerpark,

I'll look into this but would prefer an "Outlook" solution if there was one.

Solve : Best Free program for registry cleaning and system optimizing??

Which program do u think is BEST for registry cleaning and system optimizing?I know a registry cleaner that is usually suggested on this forum is CCleaner. I use it myself and it works really well.Got to go with CCleaner it the best free one out there in my opinion!Go to http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds.aspx and GET the SLIM version; it avoids the Yahoo toolbar.Regedit. FilluX, ignore this:

Regedit.
Yep editing your registry with regedit is a bad idea unless you're 101% sure on what you're doing. And even then handle with care.FilluX........ I have been testing this registry cleaner for the last 6 weeks and FIND it to be very good.

What should I do?I don't have an ANSWER but, while you're waiting other replies, you MIGHT also post here: http://www.adobe.com/support/forums/

Solve : How to retrieve deleted files from recycle bin??

Answer»

I just ran across this issue while ridding my computer of a malware infection a couple of weeks ago. Now, I can't remember where in the system the deleted files are.

Can someone please enlighten me? I need to know urgently for my Church's computer.

Thank you in ADVANCE,

SurfinwahineIf you deleted them manually they should be in the recycle bin, if they're not then you must have cleared it too.
If you used a removal program then they should be in that program's 'vault' or 'backup'.
Why would you want them BACK?I'm afraid that in trying to delete some games from the computer I may have inadvertently deleted files we USE to print labels for our Sermon CDs!
Our Minister of Music called and said the games are still on the system but the files containing the Label info are gone!
You see my dilemma...

SurfinwahineThen hopefully they're in the recycle bin.Sadly, no. I deleted the 2 "games" files from the recycle bin. One file was named
"Spyder.exe" I believe, and the other was "Solitaire applet". I also deleted the shortcuts to the games. Those are the only things I deleted. I don't understand how the Labels would have been deleted and the games still be on the system.

Any ideas how to locate the files?

Pretty please?

Surfinwahine
It doesn't sound like something you did caused the problem.
Do you remember any of the file names, if so try searching your computer for them.
Start>Search>Search for Files or Folders.
Has anyone else been playing with the computer? That's possible...at this point I won't know until I get there in the morning. I did set an Administrator password to logon to our Ministry's Account, but 1-2 others use the same computer.

Once the computer is on, how can I set a password to keep people off of the internet account?

Thank you so much.

SurfinwahineI have very limited KNOWLEDGE on passords and multiple users because I use a non networked computer and I'm the only person with access.
Hang in there, someone will be able to answer your last question.Hi, To set a password do the following- Start,Control panel, User accounts, Change an account, Click computer administrator, Change password.

Anything else.If I am some missing!!!!

Pls help me.what version of internet explorer are you USING?

if is is not version 7 Go here :-

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/ie/getitnow.mspx

and download the LATEST version, then try your software again.

I have IE 7.but can't install it.
The problem is
The MSXML6.0 PACKAGE is not supported on this type of processor.Check out this thread:
http://www.mindjet.com/us/forum/viewtopic.php?p=5885

Basically you NEED to download and install MSXML6.0 for 64 bit system. (which it appears you've already done.)
Then you need to do a custom install of mindmanager where you tell it not to install MSXML6.0 since that causes the problem.Deerpark
I already install MSXML for 64 bit from that link. And also I install MM7 from that link. But it takes somr other error. So I removed. The problem is solved.

Solve : Post Spyware removal problems?

Answer»

I recently downloaded Spybot Search and destroy and it helped me locate a great many disturbing spyware and malware as well as dialers on my PCs. Some of these things also SEEMED to have Antivirus disablers. Fortunately I have now removed them, but on the other hand, I am now having problems OPENING many programs on my PCs such as Firefox and Word. Often I GET messages like quota is not enough to process command or that a certain key could not be initialized. I tried to uninstall some applications like Office and Firefox, but that isn't working either. My Antivirus (AVG) also has problems. Sometimes the resident shield simply goes off. On startup the Antivirus just starts a full scan, although I have set it to disable the scheduler. The settings just seem to reset things. It seems to me that there is some PROBLEM in the registry. How do I solve it? Is there some other solution other than any of the fix-registry programs? Applied RegistryPatrol to some of them, but it only fixes some things.Re-boot into safemode.
Run all your malware apps there and let them fix what they find.
Post back with a list of what you ran and results of the SCANS...

Solve : Using 5.25" floppy drives in windows...?

Answer»

Is there any way to get XP to recognize a 5.25" floppy DRIVE? If not, what is the newest version of windows that I can use? Actually according to this XP does support 5.25 drives although you can't FORMAT them. Are you sure the drive you've hooked up is still working, after all its must be pretty old by now. Also from what I've read not all newer BIOS' supports 5.25 drives anymore so that might be your problem.actually, that's what I need to do is format. I have a 386SX that will only read disks, it won't format. I can't figure out why, it just says read error. abort, retry, fail. But with a formatted disk it reads. I don't know what's wrong. That's why I was trying to get XP to format a disk so I can use them on it. So, what versions of windows will format a 5.25" floppy disk?

Also, I'm using the Format A:\ command in PC-DOS 6.3, if that changes anything... my B:\ drive does the same thing, but it's 3.5" so it formats in XP.Windows 98 should be ABLE to format it (and probably also Windows ME then). Can't seem to find any info on whether or not Win 2000 can. Thanks, I think I'll go with 98... I swore never to use ME again, ugh. I think I've got a copy of that laying around somewhere...

Anyway, if anyone reading this knows why my computer won't read unformatted disks, I would greatly appreciate it. I'm pretty sure it's not the drives unless both have the same problem, which I doubt, but could be possible.

The computer is a Packard Bell Legend 386 with the 16-bit 386SX processor (Surface mount!), I'm not sure about the RAM, and it has 2 floppies, one 5.25" and a 3.5". 125MB hard drive, and PC-DOS 6.30/Windows 3.xWin2K will handle it as well...Quote from: jdearing17 on July 19, 2007, 06:39:02 PM

No computer will read unformatted disks, there is nothing on the disk to read.

The 386 sx won't format disks in either floppy drive, the 3.5 inch drive or the 5.25 inch? In that case I would suspect the floppy controller or the ribbon cable from the motherboard to the drives. Like the other people said, this is VERY old hardware. You could check that all connectors are well plugged in and secure.

Also the disks themselves could be defective and unusable. The 5.25" disks in particular have a very flimsy casing that does not protect the disk surface very well. Writing on the label with a ball pen can kill a disk. Also dust can get in.

You aren't doing anything silly like leaving the disks write protected are you?

I of course know this, maybe I'm wording it wrong... I put the disk in, use the format command, and it says disk read fail, abort, retry, fail. This particular disk is brand new, I forgot about the write protection on these though. I'll have to check that.

It will format a previously formatted disk though, it just won't format this brand new one. Again, this maybe the write protection thing...this is probably basic knowledge, but did you use the right floppy ribbon cable (the one with the 7 ribbon "twist"? and did you hook in the cable with the twist towards the drive?

just makin' sure! GOOD call, Flip81! That used to catch people out back in the day... It must be 12 years since I last used a 5.25" disk. I used to BUY 3M ones preformatted for an old IBM PS/2 386 DX (Not a game console!)

ha! touche, PS2.I realised my last post was a bit ambiguous. The 5.25" disks were preformatted, but not especially for the PS/2, which of course used the standard MS-DOS disk format.

Solve : Removing Kodak EasyShare from my computer but keep my photos.?

Answer»

I have the Kodak EasyShare on my computer and all (620) photos are in that program and any time I add a photo to my computer I cannot do so with it being placed in the Kodak program.
I am taking a course at the local community college in Adobe Photoshop Element 5.0. I am unable to download any pictures associated with this program that do not land in Kodak Photo program.
Have tried to get some service to burn me CD's with my photos after they remove them from the Kodak Program or at least burn the CD's so I can DELETE the Kodak program and then upload the CD's on to my PC. To date no one has been willing to do this. Does anyone: know (1) how to get my photos out of Kodak (2) know of a service who would be willing to do this for me at a cost? What version of Windows are you using? I'm not familiar with Kodak EasyShare. Are you sure your pictures are not also in the My Pictures (Win XP) or Pictures (Win Vista) folder? If not, why not just copy them to that folder and then uninstall EasyShare?

Do you have a CD or DVD burner drive in your computer?Let me make sure I understand this...
You want to use Photoshop, but you're having problems because the IMAGE files open in Kodak EasyShare? Is this correct?

If so, you can resolve your problem without having to remove Kodak. Simply right-click on one of the image files and go to Properties. Next to Open with, click on the Change button. This will open the Open With window. Look for Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0, SELECT it, and click OK. Your pictures will now open in Photoshop.

Follow these steps for whatever files you need. You only need to do this once for each filetype (jpg, gif, png, etc).Ugh, my MUM uses that program.

I do believe, the pictures are stored in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\My Pictures, and a sub folder that is NAMED Kodak or something. (For Windows XP, as far as I know)

If you move all the pictures to a folder on your desktop, you should be able to un-install it without worring about it deleting any pictures when it goes.
