Solve : Program to record screen output?? |
Answer» I'm looking for a program to record whatever appears on the computer screen to a video file, mpeg2, avi, etc. I'm not looking for a keylogger. I want to create a training video of a new program we have at work. If possible, I would like to overlay an audio file/speech ONTO it (or maybe I could just run both at the same time). Is there something available that could do this, either software or hardware? Thanks. That should work. I'll give it a whirl. If you can think of anything else, I'd appreciate it. Check out: http://www.debugmode.com/winkGreat Find Willy...Thanx !Quote from: patio on August 01, 2007, 05:13:21 PM Great Find Willy...Thanx ! You're welcome. Ya like that, eh? It's PRETTY slick. I've only played with it though - not mastered it. You can 'idiot-proof' something with a tool like that, huh? Enjoy. .I've used HyperCam and Wink. I found Hypercam doesn't work too well on slower machines, but it's pretty useful. Camstudio is another free option, and my personal choice, but Wink also works well.Hypercam works pretty good. The only complaint is the files are huge. 10 seconds is about 1 mb. Most of the size is from the audio portion. I tried with the lower SETTINGS, like 8 bit, but the audio came out staticky. I'll try the others. |

Solve : Can't send e-mails in Thunderbird!? |
Answer» I have INSTALLED Mozilla THUNDERBIRD 2.0.0.5 recently (to go with Mozilla Firefox) and I decided to use it with my Windows Live Mail account. Now I have more SMTP servers on Thunderbird, and I am not sure how and why they are there. The first SMTP server is *********@hotmail.com, the second one is "WEBMAIL - localhost". When I send e-mails from my Windows Live account, it will return a sending FAILURE message and the message does not send. (Guess there's no reason to send a "Outgoing Server Test" message!). What should I do? Should I delete the "Webmail - localhost" server? |

Answer» everytime i have outlook minimized and go to open it, i get this error message. i dont understand what it means and i'm hoping SOMEONE can tell me how to fix it. Are you using a Microsoft Exchange email account? Is this happening at work or at home? i dont KNOW what a microsoft exchange email address is. i'm guessing a microsoft email address? i am using a "[emailprotected]" email address. it is happening at home. What is an Exchange Server e-mail account?: "Home users typically do not have an Exchange Server e-mail account; instead they use a POP3 e-mail account with an Internet service provider (ISP)" Was this working right at one time? Solve : Would win98 run in nowadays fast CPUs?? |
Answer» Hi! I was just wandering... how would win98SE run in latest-tech machines (talk about dual core CPUs)? I mean will it run at all? I always liked win98SE rather than XP or Vista, but never tried it on anything faster than a P3 500mhz... ... Somewhere in the depths of my old BRAIN, I'm getting the feeling that this is 512M, not 1G. But I can't remember enough details to do anything more than toss this out there, and hope it is not too far off the mark. I'm sure you'll check around and find out. I thought I had some good stuff on it in my bookmarks, and so far have found: http://www.dewassoc.com/support/win98/win9x_512memory.htm but that is not the one that I was looking for. If I COME across more sites/pages, I'll POST links. Edit: some mention of it in this thread. I wouldn't imagine Win98 supporting dual core, as even XP Home does not. Not sure about any other issues, but drivers could be a problem with newer hardware, as could support. As patio suggested, Win2k would be a good choice, it's fairly similar to 98 in look and feel from my point of view but better (again, only my opinion). |

Solve : Windows MovieMaker - poor quality output? |
Answer» I edit video clips (.avi from my digicam) in MovieMaker - clips usually 2-3 minutes long. Exported .wmv quality is never very good but is particularly bad if some of the "heavier" transitions are USED; pixelation etc. The sequences become very jumpy and pixelation seems very high for FILE sizes of around 15Mb. |

Solve : PDF download - how to stop??? |
Answer» I want to browse a very long document which is in PDF format. I've not come across this seemingly automatic and immediate download feature before. Are you saying you've viewed other PDF documents on the Internet where the whole document did not automatically download? Can you give an EXAMPLE? I just looked at a 799 page TAX publication from the IRS website. The entire document downloaded as soon as I displayed it in my browser; I had no control over that.To see it on your screen it has to be downloaded one way or another (no such THING as a free lunch) so it's probably best for you to right click and save it to your disk then open later with Foxit of course. Google Foxit, you and your computer will be much happier. Yep. Unfortunately, if he only wanted to view the first few pages of a 1600 page document, there's no way to limit the downloading to what's actually needed. Thanks for all replies. soybean - I must admit that I can't recall ever having looked at a PDF file before - I assumed that there would be an option to download. In this case the download started as soon as the page displayed, as in your own example, with no control. I gather from what you've said that this is the way PDF works. Fed - Clicking r or l anywhere on the page brought no response (except the Adobe options). My interest in the document (a facsimile of a 3 volume book: "History of the English", Online Books) is not very serious - curiosity really - and I would have liked to browse. You need to right click on the link to the page to get the options. Don't forget to check out http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.phpQuote from: silkie on July 31, 2007, 05:15:24 PM soybean -Right. It's worth noting here that the document you were viewing is an extreme case; it's an extremely large, even for 1600 pages. The 799-page tax document I mentioned was about 3.6MB. The document you were viewing must be heavily laden with graphics or a lot of some type of content that results in much bigger files than only text. If the document you were viewing had a file size in direct proportion to the one I was viewing, it would be about 7.2MB, not 70MB. Fed - Thanks for the tip. I think I've got what you mean - I save the link to disk and then use Foxit to open and download?soybean - Just seen your post, thanks. I'm now wondering if I've got the size right! I'm sure it quoted 26-28 mb for each of the 3 volumes.Quote I think I've got what you mean - I save the link to disk and then use Foxit to open and download?Download and install Foxit and set it as your default PDF viewer or continue using Adobe, either way the following is the same. The Foxit download is tiny. When you left click a PDF LINK using IE it will open the Foxit viewer. When you right click PDF LINK using IE it will give the you option of opening the PDF file or saving it to disk. I always save them to my desktop first. Adobe is bloatware IMHO.Fed - Thanks for that. Always learning something new (bloatware and IMHO)! |

MohanaK - do you have any diagnostic cd's? If not I suggest you download the Ultimate Boot CD from here. When your pc is booted from this disk you can run hardware tests such as Memtest86 (RAM test) and the appropriate diagnostics for your hdd, depends on manufacturer. |

Answer» I use AVG Free Edition as it doesn't bug me to log on as an administrator like Norton Internet Security does. Instead, AVG gives you a prompt for 30 seconds, if you don't tell it what to do, it sends it to the virus vault. Plus - it DOESN'T hog my memory!I chose option z, NOD32. Light, fast, high virus detection rate and rootkit detection as well. It isn't free though, but cheaper than the big names like SYMANTEC and McAfee.I don't use any |

Everything works fine, except for the Dell Quickset program, for which the error message below comes up. Solve : Outlook 2002 and HTML? |
Answer» EVEN though, in the opitons, I have selected HTML for pagesetup for outgoing messages, any may I want to answer opens in plain text (in Word). If I want to answer, I have to open a blank page (it opens in HTML format) and copy and past the original message I want to answer to this BLANC page. Does anyone have any idea what is wrong here?I'm using Outlook 2003, so yours may be different. Do have this menu sequence, Tools, Options, E-MAIL Options (a button)? If so, and you click on E-mail Options, do you see an option to "Read all standard mail in plain text"? If so, unselect it an save. Does that work?Hello SOYBEAN. Thank you for answering. Nope, the option "Read all standard mail in plain text" is not present in Outlook 2002. There are three options available for page setup: html, RTF or plain text. I selected html. Next there are two other options: - Use Microsoft Word for e-mail messages. - Use Microsoft Word to read messages in RTF format. I CHECKED both. Have you checked with any recipients to see if the emails are arriving in HTML style ? ?Yes, they do arrive in html format |

Solve : Word Pad / Word default problem? |
Answer» Word pad seems to be all that i need for most of the word processing that i do. Can i set word pad as the default program to open when i double click a doc icon that is created in word pad but my computer wants to open it in word and remind me that my 30 or 60 free subscription has expired and i wind up closing out of the doc and reopening by right clicking and chosing "open with this"....this is such a pain and when i'm in a hurry which is most of the time i forget to open with a right click. Just right click the icon on your desktop and select Open with... Yes, but it be set as the default program to open all word documents?WordPad and Word are two different animals. Since you're telling us your Office free trial has expired...and WordPad is what you basically use as your word processor, then all you need to do is create your document in WordPad and then save it to wherever. You then select WordPad to open that document by doing what was said in the previous post. Since your Office Word program trial is over...you can ALSO open those documents using WordPad as well. You just have to let the computer know that...again...following the same step as described in the previous post. Either I'm missing something or not fully understanding your issue.Quote from: Kryptonite on July 06, 2007, 06:57:41 AM Isn't there a free version of a word like program that recognizes word and it opens a whole suite of programs similar to office?Yes, OpenOffice.org. Another option for a freeware word processor that will open Word documents (note: this might not work with Word 2007 documents) is AbiWord. Actually, I'm not sure OpenOffice will recognize Word 2007 files, i.e. saved in Word 2007 format. I'm surprised you can open them with WordPad. But, since you can do so, I agree with The Savior about opening them in WordPad and saving in a format that will then open in WordPad and not prompt you to choose a program with which to open it.Quote from: The Saviour on July 06, 2007, 12:38:55 PM
[ an ASIDE but related: i had a house fire several months ago and there have been problems with everything associated with owning a house since that time...the electric company wants me to write a letter explaining that i had a fire and that i want my electric turned off, so does the gas company, so does the insurance comapny, so does the town, and so on. Everytime i'm asked to write a letter it baffles me that a phone call is not enough to say "turn off everything cause the house is gone". i KEEP thinking it's all a bad joke or bad dream that's saying what is requested on the phone is not enough to get the job done. So i write a letter and they ask for proof but don't say what proof might be....so here i am several months after the fire still writing letters. ] If i recall correctly in Win 98 there was a chooice when selecting "Open with" to always associate this command with this icon. No such option that i can find exists in XP to do that. If a document is created in word pad the icon is exactly the same as Office/word. So simply double clicking always leads to the doc opening with office/word where it TELLS me that my trial is over and if i want to buy....etc etc, which i do not want to buy. All i want to do is to always associate that icon with word pad so on THIS computer it will open with word pad. If i take a copy of the document on a CD or jump drive to another person's house who has office on their computer then let it open in office/word. i just HATE the extra steps that i have to go through to open a document that was created in the free word pad program. Maybe what i'm asking for is not possible with a PC or with XP. That's why i'm asking here. i appreciate all of the suggestions but i already know about right clicking and chosing "open with" i just want to change the rules so i can simpley double click and have it open in word pad, not office/word. Sorry if this is such an unusual request or that i'm explaining it wrong. Quote from: Kryptonite on July 07, 2007, 05:50:36 AM If i recall correctly in Win 98 there was a chooice when selecting "Open with" to always associate this command with this icon. No such option that i can find exists in XP to do that.Wrong. "Open with" is available in XP. Open an Explorer window, locate one of your files, right click and select "Open with". |

Solve : Best Free program for registry cleaning and system optimizing?? |
Answer» Which program do u think is BEST for registry cleaning and system optimizing?I know a registry cleaner that is usually suggested on this forum is CCleaner. I use it myself and it works really well.Got to go with CCleaner it the best free one out there in my opinion!Go to http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds.aspx and GET the SLIM version; it avoids the Yahoo toolbar.Regedit. FilluX, ignore this: Regedit.Yep editing your registry with regedit is a bad idea unless you're 101% sure on what you're doing. And even then handle with care.FilluX........ I have been testing this registry cleaner for the last 6 weeks and FIND it to be very good. http://www.eusing.com/free_registry_cleaner/registry_cleaner.htm I also use ccleaner on a regular basis. dl65 Another VOTE for CCleaner here. And dl65, I've heard good things about your suggestion too, I might give it a try.Quote from: dl65 on July 18, 2007, 07:25:59 PM FilluX........ I have been testing this registry cleaner for the last 6 weeks and find it to be very good.ive used that one for a bit and i like it. i need to reinstall it.I also use Eusing Free Registry Cleaner and have experienced no problems with it. I've mentioned it before in this forum.i think thats how i found out about itthanx for all the replys! I have got ccleaner and registry mechanic, but i'll try out eusing FilipI personally use Norton Systemworks without GoBack, but I have had problems with this program. |

Solve : Post Spyware removal problems? |
Answer» I recently downloaded Spybot Search and destroy and it helped me locate a great many disturbing spyware and malware as well as dialers on my PCs. Some of these things also SEEMED to have Antivirus disablers. Fortunately I have now removed them, but on the other hand, I am now having problems OPENING many programs on my PCs such as Firefox and Word. Often I GET messages like quota is not enough to process command or that a certain key could not be initialized. I tried to uninstall some applications like Office and Firefox, but that isn't working either. My Antivirus (AVG) also has problems. Sometimes the resident shield simply goes off. On startup the Antivirus just starts a full scan, although I have set it to disable the scheduler. The settings just seem to reset things. It seems to me that there is some PROBLEM in the registry. How do I solve it? Is there some other solution other than any of the fix-registry programs? Applied RegistryPatrol to some of them, but it only fixes some things.Re-boot into safemode. |

Solve : Using 5.25" floppy drives in windows...? |
Answer» Is there any way to get XP to recognize a 5.25" floppy DRIVE? If not, what is the newest version of windows that I can use? Actually according to this XP does support 5.25 drives although you can't FORMAT them. Are you sure the drive you've hooked up is still working, after all its must be pretty old by now. Also from what I've read not all newer BIOS' supports 5.25 drives anymore so that might be your problem.actually, that's what I need to do is format. I have a 386SX that will only read disks, it won't format. I can't figure out why, it just says read error. abort, retry, fail. But with a formatted disk it reads. I don't know what's wrong. That's why I was trying to get XP to format a disk so I can use them on it. So, what versions of windows will format a 5.25" floppy disk? Anyway, if anyone reading this knows why my computer won't read unformatted disks, I would greatly appreciate it. I'm pretty sure it's not the drives unless both have the same problem, which I doubt, but could be possible. No computer will read unformatted disks, there is nothing on the disk to read. The 386 sx won't format disks in either floppy drive, the 3.5 inch drive or the 5.25 inch? In that case I would suspect the floppy controller or the ribbon cable from the motherboard to the drives. Like the other people said, this is VERY old hardware. You could check that all connectors are well plugged in and secure. Also the disks themselves could be defective and unusable. The 5.25" disks in particular have a very flimsy casing that does not protect the disk surface very well. Writing on the label with a ball pen can kill a disk. Also dust can get in. You aren't doing anything silly like leaving the disks write protected are you? Quote from: contrex on July 22, 2007, 02:02:14 AM No computer will read unformatted disks, there is nothing on the disk to read. I of course know this, maybe I'm wording it wrong... I put the disk in, use the format command, and it says disk read fail, abort, retry, fail. This particular disk is brand new, I forgot about the write protection on these though. I'll have to check that. It will format a previously formatted disk though, it just won't format this brand new one. Again, this maybe the write protection thing...this is probably basic knowledge, but did you use the right floppy ribbon cable (the one with the 7 ribbon "twist"? and did you hook in the cable with the twist towards the drive? just makin' sure! GOOD call, Flip81! That used to catch people out back in the day... It must be 12 years since I last used a 5.25" disk. I used to BUY 3M ones preformatted for an old IBM PS/2 386 DX (Not a game console!) ha! touche, PS2.I realised my last post was a bit ambiguous. The 5.25" disks were preformatted, but not especially for the PS/2, which of course used the standard MS-DOS disk format. |
