Solve : Looking for an event calender...?

Answer» HI, I am trying to find a desktop calender to suite my limited needs, but haven't been able to find one as YET. They're generally MEANT for an office environment, not for a single user with a short term memory. It needs to do only one thing, allow me to write a reminder note to a specific date and then show me this note at a specific time, prior to this date, say the day before. This could be a typical "pop-up" alert. It doesn't need to be fancy, just free, preferably. Any opinions? Any help will be appreciated.I use ReminderFox: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1191
Works well...Thanks Broni, that one's great for online reminders. I found one called Hott Notes 4, like those little "STICKY" notes. It's so good, I'm actually thinking of donating to his cause, assuming Hott is a guy.http://www.veign.com/application.php?appid=102

If you would like to tie it in with your email and general calendar, Thunderbird and its Lightning add-on has the option for pop-ups or an email reminder for events and tasks. It can also be tied in with Google calendar if you are sharing or looking at other people's calendars. Google calendar works for me.....and alerts and NOTICES are sent via gmail in advanceI use this one...

Solve : Looking for AVI codec for vista WMP (Windows Media Player)?

Answer»

Hi

I really don't GET it, I though AVI was a CODEC designed by Microsoft, or am I wrong?
But then why does it only plays the SOUND in my WMP?
I'm searching for some way to play it on WMP, yes I do have VLC and yes it does play correctly there, but it doesn't want to play on wmp.
I tried Divx code pack and K lite but both come with a tray prog. and I don't really like it (and the quality of the Divx code pack is poor.)
Anyone who has any idea how I can make it work?

Thanks in advance

Jonas WautersThere is a reason, many people don't use WMP, and you just mentioned one.
In any case, try this: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=5326Yeah thx.
Only too bad it has tray incons that are in the wmp process.

ohh well thanks anyway it works

Jonas You're welcome

Solve : recovery media??

Answer»

Hello, I just want to go over my contingency plan. I'm currently on a Toshiba Qosmio X505 Q870 and apparently they are no longer calling it a recovery disc creator, but a recovery media creator(this throws me off). I don't like subtle changes in the technical terms for things, because it only causes confusion and makes you wonder if it's actually what it once was called or something different(isn't it?). Most new computer(or all of them?MAJORITY) no longer come with recovery discs, and instead a hidden partition CONTAINING the necessary data is pre-installed. This is a lot of data, I guess not for now a-days with systems that can access 16 exa bytes and tera byte hard-drives being common I just didn't think I was gonna NEED DVDs let alone(if I don't want 4 or 5 DVDs) DL DVDs. I'm pretty young, but I remember having a computer with CD recovery disks lol.

Anyways, we all know if the entire drive is KILLED that partition isn't ''magically saved'' from the in-humanity of such a thing to happen. And this seems to be the best measure is to have a set of recovery discs just in-case you need to replace a hard-drive.

I am a bit confused on what happens to the OS and how the recovery works in general. If your hard-drive is corrupted or fried, all-data and obviously your OS is toast. I would think you wouldn't be able to re-install Windows from a set of recovery discs because couldn't you then be able to install windows on any computer? See this is why it says beginner on my info. In my opinion everyone should use disc imaging software. There are a number of good, free options

Solve : WGET - Slow?

Answer»

I am trying to download a 19KB (18,887 byte) file via WGET, but it is taking over 30 seconds (31 seconds to be precise)...the strange thing is, the file APPEARS in the explorer as 19KB (done?) before WGET is finished... Here is how I ran it:

wget -q http://services.runescape.com/m=itemdb_rs/*/viewitem.ws?obj=%%a

(%%a being a number from a file, extracted with a FOR loop)

Is there any other standalone HTTP downloader that works faster than wget?Whats wrong with using your browsers in-built downloader?

Solve : word print blank pages?

Answer»

I am running windows xp with works suite 2003 with hp 5550 printer. It will PRINT of a web page but when I USE word it starts as if to print and then throws out a blank page.
Please could you help me to rectify this. Your help would be much appreciated. Has it ever worked properly? Did you just install either the printer or Word? You need to PROVIDE more information. It has always worked but I had a problem with the computer and when it was rectified it would only print from the web NOT from word. by an outside agency and do not know what they did to the pc. I also cannot obtain "outlook express" anymore. Well, we'd need to know what the original problem was and how it was "rectified". Clearly something that was done is causing this and all you'll get without telling us the ENTIRE story is wild guesses. Thanks for the replies. It was originally running very slowly and being at the end of the telephone bt line I do not have a very good broadband speed. So the agency got of desktop software that I had not used for ages and cleaned the whole system up to make it go faster.

They have said that when they tested it the printer worked with word but we definately cannot get it to work with word now. I have tried downloading hp jet printer again but it did not work. I would talk to the "agency" and have them fix it. They broke it.

Solve : Can't Boot Of Secondary Hard Drive?

Answer»

i installed windows 7 on a 2nd hard drive from the 1st hard drive. which means me downloading a copy of windows 7 the making it into a virtual drive and installing it from my first hard drive to the second hard drive.

so my problem is whenever i take of the first hard drive i cant boot of second hard drive. is there a program that allows me to make a boot file for the second hard drive?

I'm running windows 7 32bit

Thanks
You downloaded W7 from where?Your first post is lacking some essential details. To save some time let me make a guess at which you might have done and how you should have done it.
Let's say a user are ready as Windows Vista on a good running computer. And then he BUYS another hard drive and gets a trial copy of Windows 7. Of course, it is kind of late now to be using the trial copy of Windows 7. Still, it is possible to install it and try it out just to see what it does.

So the user would in style the second drive into his desktop computer and make sure it's working properly. Perhaps even doing a format using his existing wiendows Vista . If everything goes well he will install Windows 7 off a DVD he has made from the ISO image provided by Microsoft as the download. The installer will see there are two disk drives and the user will select the new blank drive. Windows 7 will do the logical thing, install Windows 7 on the new drive and provide a boot loader that will allow the user to select between the two drives at bootup time.

There is nothing especially new or on about this arrangement. This is how Microsoft operating systems for the desktop had been doing dual-boot for the past few years. The system assumes, logically, that you're not going to change the hardware configuration after the installation. And that is the key of the problem this user has. He thinks he can just remove the original drive now that he is installed Windows 7 on the second drive. It doesn't work that way.
Disclaimer: all this is just a wild guess based on the limited information to the original poster provided. My apologies for any confusion given by my quick response.

OK.. ill be more specific. first i installed windows 7 on the 1st hard drive i had from a USB because i don't have any CD/DVD drive and it worked. but after a while the OS began to slow down. so i decided to take my other hard drive and install windows 7 on there too so i did. all i did is download it from a website (not trial) which is an ISO. then i mounted it with virtual clone drive so i don't need to use a DVD drive and then i installed it on the 2nd hard drive. but i think the problem is that the boot files are written on the 1st hard drive. so when ever i remove the 1st hard drive and try to boot off the second hard drive the computer wont boot off of it. my question is how do i make it so the computer boots of the 2nd hard drive without having the 1st hard drive attached?

thanks if you guys need my computer specs I'm going to provide it.

Thanks againQuote from: Allan on April 06, 2010, 04:29:01 PM
Right - that's what we figured. Sorry, we can't help.

Which is mediafire.com coz i uploaded my copy on there so if i scratch the CD/DVD i wont have to buy a new one. and i don't like to waste space on my hard drive. but i have the serial though.Quote

That is right. In a two-drive system only one drive is set as the boot drive. With a notable exception. If both drives were installed independently, each without the other PRESENT. the BIOS boot menu can be used.

Too bad you do not have a DVD drive. If you did,m and if you had a proper copy of Windows 7, you can easily repair the installation by the recovery process in Windows 7 install DVD.. It is something like the process in Windows XP, but not the same.

Windows 7 is an outstanding product. If you need a low-cost version of Windows 7, you need to check with an educational institution in your area.

Patronizing sites that offer unauthorized Dloads of major software is a bad idea. And I do not just mean the legal and ethical issues you may have. What I mean is Webmasters who promote that kind of thing have very selfish motives and they have no respect for you. They consider you a sucker.

if i use windows recovery on a flash card is it possible to add a boot file in the 2nd hard drive?Topic Re-opened on request.

I see the topic is still open.

How to put full boot loader on a second Hard Drive.
This discussion is specific to the official release to the official release of Microsoft Windows 7. This may or may not apply to the trial versions of Windows 7.
The first step of course is to power down the computer completely and remove the first hard drive out of the system. Turn the power back on, go into the BIOS and make sure the drive that had been the second is now the only one in the system and it will be the default boot drive after the CD-ROM. Next, placed your Windows 7 DVD into your combo CD/DVD reader and reboot the system when you get the message to press any key and let the Windows 7 installer begin.
At this POINT Windows 7 installer should realize you already have Windows 7 is installed on the only hard drive in the system. It will then attempt to repair or recover that installation. If it is successful you will then have a complete boot loader on the second drive, which is now the only drive.
Unlike some versions of Linux, Windows 7 will allow the single drive to be either be the first or second in the physical hardware array. Logically Windows 7 sees the only drive as the boot drive.
Reboot the system at least two times to make sure it is working normally. Then power down and put back in your first drive and configure the BIOS to your preferences for the boot order.
The BIOS should have an alternate boot menu available to you. On some systems this is done by hitting F8 before the Windows loader starts. On others it might be the F12 key. See your documentation. With each hard drive having its own full boot loader, you should be able to boot either drive independently whether not the other is present.
This this procedure requires use of the installation DVD in order to make a repair on the boot sector of the drive of interest. Now if sing a USB device as a DVD emulation that should also work. However, I have not tested a DVD EMULATOR with the Windows 7 installation DVD.

We hope this is of some help to you.
And by the way, there is some new information available about a trial version of Windows 7 that is available for some users.

Solve : Toshiba recovery CD stuck on "Applying Final Configuration" fix?

Answer»

I searched for a fix to this problem and couldn't find any posts that were resolved so here is my proposed fix. This METHOD was performed on a Toshiba Satellite A210 series, but I'm positive it will work on almost all models.

Prerequisites:
Toshiba laptop.
Toshiba recovery CD used

Symptoms:
Screen reads "Applying Final CONFIGURATION" and never finishes or computer reboots manually or automatically and repeats a same step endlessly with a screen title of "Applying Final Configuration".

Solution:
The problem seems to be in the cleanup design of this final step and is purely a huge mistake in the programming department of Toshiba. I used an extra tool to complete step 1 called WinPatrol 2010, but you can do it with the alternative discussed below.
Step 1.) Using WinPatrol bring up the "Startup Programs" tab. Delete the following items:

  • Title Command
  • SysOff ClosespV.exe
  • B3 B3.bat
  • Toshiba America Information Systems Splash.exe
Step 1 alternative.) If WinPatrol undesired then use msconfig to uncheck the items listed above in the Startup tab.
Step 2.) Check the Startup folder to verify B3.bat and Splash.exe don't exist there. If they do exist there then delete them. The Startup folder can be found easily by clicking on the Start Button (Vista is the color WHEEL of doom) in the bottom LEFT corner. Then click on All programs and look for the Startup folder.
Step 3.) Reboot
Step 4.) System Preparation Tool pops up. Don't change any options and RUN it as it is. It will do some cleanup and Sysprep whatnot and reboot the computer automatically again.
Step 5.) Answer questions on a reboot such as Username, password, blah, blah.

Done! I hope this helps at least one person out there!

On a personal note I own a Toshiba running XP and have had nightmares with customizing it without using this recovery CD. It seems like Toshiba hardware is sound, but tech support and drivers seem like a distant afterthought. After experiencing this and having my own experience I've decided I won't be purchasing a Toshiba ever again.Quote from: Sn3akyP3t3 on April 07, 2010, 11:03:43 AM

Solve : I can't watch videos on youtube?

Hi
I had the same problem with I.E 64 bit; it seems ADOBE is not COMPATIBLE with it.

If you look under all programs you will see that it has I.E (64 bit) and ALSO just I.E which I am guessing is the 32 bit version that will work with Adobe
Flash player is compatible with 64bit Windows, just not a 64bit browser. It will work in your standard IE.

http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/systemreqs/
Hi, this is a bit of a long shot and I don't know if you have tried this already.

When I had this problem in IE, I tried clearing the cache and temp files etc but that didn't work. I then reset the IE settings COMPLETELY...

Tools>>Internet Options>>Advanced>>Reset

This ACTUALLY worked for me, so just give it a go and see if you can get it working in IE first

Solve : System restore problems?

Answer»

I am desperately in need of some assistance.
My Toshiba Laptop (about 2 and a half years old) was running Windows Vista with all the MS 2007 office applications. Over the last few months it had been getting progressively slower and of course that was incredibly FRUSTRATING. Someone told me that there was a way to restore the computer back to its 'out-of-the-box' state, and this seemed too good to be true in my opinion. So i saved all the files i WANTED to keep and got instructionson how to restore my computer.

All seemed to be going well in the RESTORING process until i was met with an error"Error: F3-FF00-0020. Computer will shut off now" (or something along those lines)

so i turned on the computer again and let it run when i got a n error "BOOTMGR is missing".

So after a little google-ing and searching i got the impression that i needed to load Vista back onto the computer with the disk. But my computer came with Vista already loaded onto it and do you think i could find a disk in the things that originally came with the computer??? And my Google SEARCH from before said that this was a common occurance and could be easily fixed with a free download of the windows vista recovery files. This directed me to a Limewire Torrent file (I USUALLY abhore using P2P sharing programs like this - but i was desperate) and it downloaded an *iso file image that had to be burnt to disc.

So i have my makeshift recovery disk (it was a 64bit version - I have no idea what that means BTW - but it sounded better than the 32 bit) and i find my Microsoft Vista product code on the bottom of the laptop (almost worn away- but there) and i try booting the computer from the CD.

All seems to be going okay until i get an error code 0x80070002 (something about the file cannot be found - or something along those lines)

I am at the point where i dont know whether to cry or tear my hair out in frustration. I have considered taking to some kind of computer specialist - but am so afraid that in the process i will drain my bank account.

My questions to you wonderful people out there are:
\
1. Can anyone help me repare this without having to buy new software or pay a computer expert?
2. Am i even doing the correct thing - keeping in mind i am a very basic computer user so computer related jargon does not sit well with me! lol)
3. would it simply be easier/ cheaper/ less hassel to go out and buy the new Windows 7 program and go from there?? Will this even fix the problem?

If anyone out there can help me it would be so very much appreciated! I am getting sick of googling on my iphone!

Solve : MS Excel issue?

Answer»

We have a folder on a file server at my office that I am getting several complaints from people that the excel files this folder has in it are showing up as read-only. I checked the folder settings all the way down to the excel file itself and domain users are set to have modify PRIVILEGES on it. I even gave them Full Control to see if that would help but all the users are still getting the excel file showing as "read-only." I have checked a couple of the users' profiles to make sure it wasn't a permissions error and they had administrative RIGHTS to the PC. I really don't understand what could be causing this. The users that I have checked all are running MS Office 2003 and the file was created using Office 2007 but the users have the Offie 2007 compatibility pack installed and are able to view the file but not modify it. I'm not quite sure what to give you as far as PC specs since it's happening on a pretty wide range of PCS, but in general they are all running Pentium 4's, with at least a 40GB HDD, 1GB RAM, Windows XP Professional. All with SP3 and the latest updates. Any ideas? Thanks for any help. Also, I don't think it's an issue where someone has it open somewhere else because I checked several other excel files which they should have been able to modify but all of them were coming up as read-only.Are the files protected? Open one up with Excel and look under Tools---Protection.
I've got Office XP (Excel 2002).Also, setting the "Full Control" ACL to "Allow" doesn't automatically give "Full control"... a "deny" ACL will override that, so make sure there are no "Deny" ACLs listed on the drive/file.

Thanks for the suggestions. I checked to make sure no "Deny" ACL was checked (there wasn't) and then checked to see if the spreadsheet was protected which it was not. Any more ideas? Thanks again!Have you tried to move the files to a different folder to see if they can use them?I have not tried that yet. I'll give that a shot today and post the results. Thanks!Quote from: beanhead07 on APRIL 05, 2010, 01:49:22 PM

Also, I don't think it's an issue where someone has it open somewhere else because I checked several other excel files which they should have been able to modify but all of them were coming up as read-only.
I think you need to examine this issue closer. Let's say one user has an Excel file open. Since that user is the only person to have it open, that person should be able to modify the file and should have gotten no notice about being limited to read-only when opening it. I believe any other users who open the file subsequent to the first user, while the file is still open by the first user, will get the notice about being limited to read-only.

Do you agree with this?
Yeah I definitely agree with that soybean, but there are certain excel files that are doing that that only 3 people have acces to: administrator, dept manager and assistant dept manager. The assistant dept manager wasn't here when I tested it, and I (administrator) didn't have it open under an administrative account, but I opened it on the dept manager's login and he got the read-only message. So at least with that file I don't think that is the issue. That could be a very possible issue with the other files but I am kind of thinking that if that many files are having this issue it's probably all tied to the same cause, but I could be wrong. I will definitely CHECK into that more as well. Thanks for all the suggestions!

Solve : Missing or corrupt file system 32/ntoskrnl.exe?

Answer»

I have been trying to fix this corrupt file problem for a whole NIGHT and now a day. I have a netbook, no drives, and did not come with recovery disks of any sorts. I have been on the internet downloading registry programs, folders, recovery files, on my memory stick, which it did not read, my external cd rom drive which did not work, it will not GO past reinstall system 32/ntoskrnl.exe, corrupt or missing. I can access bios and tried default reload settings, didn't work. I have crashed other computers in bios and partitions so I don't want to go there again. How and what can I try to reinstall this folder, and get some sleep! Any suggestions?/recovery downloads? and how to get your computer to read them?
Driving me nuts, but I will not give up until my netbook will be in non-recovery !

Thank you From your post you say you're using a net book, not a note book. Is that right? In either case, we need to have more information about the model number of your computer. Both net books and notebooks are strange animals. Are we to assume that you're using windows XP on a net book? Most recent net books come with Windows 7, I believe.
If this is an embedded VERSION of windows XP it is highly unlikely that you could've lost a critical file.
Please give us as much material you can about what type of computer this is and what your experience has been with it up to now.

And by the way, if this thing is under warranty it is not, in my opinion, worth the time trying to FIGURE out what's wrong with the thing. You need to get in TOUCH with the manufacturer right away before the warranty expires.

I have now set up a new account (different name different server) in outlook however I KEEP getting the LOG in box for the old account COMING up. I am hesitant to delete the old email account as I am unsure if that will then delete all the old email I have in Outlook - I would like to keep them as a record. Solve : html or css help?

Answer»

I been doing ok with geting an image to be my background on CSS pages.

But I have it set to No Repeat and it works.

How do I GET the image to cover the whole page without re peating??Use a big image. Keep in mind that you don't know what size monitor and resolution your viewers will be USING. So, I think I'd want to use a fixed WIDTH page if I were going to use one image to cover the whole background of a page.

By the way, why didn't you post this in the WEB Design section, with your other discussion?

Solve : Hard drive with endless XP installation loop?

Answer»

I have a Dell Dimension 3000 running XP SP3 with 2 hard drives - C and D, with XP originally on the C drive. I acquired a number of trojans and after apparently getting rid of them I found that I could only boot my C drive in safe mode. Stupidly I thought that reinstalling XP would sort the problem. At first the installation seemed to go normally, up to the point where a restart was needed. I restarted and XP began to run. Then it stopped and said XP cannot run in safe mode- XP is restarting, which it did and now I have an endless loop start -stop-restart-stop ad infinitum. I have a second disk - D drive onto which I reinstalled XP. I found that I could then rescue the info from the C disk. Having gathered all I need I then tried to format the C disk but RECEIVED an error message saying that Windows cannot complete the operation. This is my last try before binning the disk. Any help you can offer gratefully received.
No idea what you did. Did you try to do a completely new format and install or were you trying to do a repair install? In other words, what does "reinstalling xp" mean? This started when I disabled my firewall when I was having problems installing a photo frame, and this was one of the suggestions to get over the problems. I forgot to switch it back on and collected a bunch of trojans. Among other things they had shut down McAfee, but I managed to get rid of them by using Spybot, but found that I could only boot in safe mode. I decided, foolishly I admit, that re-installing XP would fix that. I stuck my XP disc in and ran it. All seemed OK up to the point where I had to restart to complete the installation and ran into this problem that XP will not run in safe mode, and neither will it just shut down. It endlessly restarts and tries to complete the installation with the inevitable doomed result.I still don't know what you are doing. Are you trying to start from scratch (erase everything on your drive and reinstall the OS)?When I started installing XP I hoped to get the disc up and running as before. Since the problems I have had I now wish to format the disc so that I can put it to further use when I want to. I have tried both quick and standard format and in each case I get the message Windows cannot complete this format. Boot to the XP CD. Delete any and all partitions. Create a new system partition. Do a full format (which will also check for and attempt to repair any hd errors). Then install the OS. If there are problems please post the COMPLETE AND EXACT error message(s) you see.Thank you for your patience. I'm SORRY but this is at the limit of my competence. Can you please advise how I boot to the XP CD without it going into run mode, and amplify the partition procedure.

thank YOUTHAT's been your problem - you've been trying to format from within Windows and you cannot do that. Don't worry about the partition then. Just do this:

Change the BIOS so the cd drive is at the top of the boot order
Insert the XP CD
Reboot to the CD
Begin the install procedure. At the very beginning you'll be offered the option to format first. Choose that option.
Install XP

When I go into the Bios to Boot Sequence I find:

1. IDE CD-Rom device, 2. Hard Disk Drive C, both ticked.

There is no reference to my D drive, which is now running the OS. I'm concerned that I do not currently understand the relationship between my C and D drives. I tried to physically remove the C drive but could not boot the D drive even though I had taken the jumper off the C and put it on the D set to cable select. It appears that the D drive has a slave relatinship to the C drive even though the C is not accesible. I am worried that if I kick off a format procedutre at present I shall not be aware of which disc it is formatting.Stop playing with the drives and follow the instructions above. If d: does not have an OS installed you cannot boot to it.Sorry I wasn't clear above. I tried to remove the C drive a few days ago, not today. The D drive is what I am currently running on. I installed XP on it to get the machine up and running, harvested the stuff off the C drive via Explorer, and am now trying to get the C drive out of the equation, although as I said I'm worried that it seems to be an essential part of the chain at present. So there is only one drive right now? Then it is c: drive - it does not matter what its previous designation was.

Please - if this is not correct just start at the beginning and explain everything slowly and clearly. This piecemeal story is beginning to get a bit annoying. My first post set out the current position - C drive unusable, D drive loaded with XP to get operational again. At present both DISCS are in place and connected.Just to say thank you for your assistance to date - I am now away from this computer for a week, back on 12/4/10

Solve : Stumped...Hope This Is The Right Section?

I have an older PC. 2.6G Intel Pentium 4 processor and 2 G of RAM. I'm dual booting XP Pro and Win 7 on 2 separate hard drives.
I have an old Sound Blaster Live card that works great on XP. I couldn't get the drivers to work in 7 so I got the KX drivers.

After some tinkering, I was able to get all six speakers working and sounding good in 7. Now, what I'm having a problem with.
I play my X-box 360 through my 22 inch PC monitor, and had the sound routed through the SB card via RCA couplers to a 3.5 mm adapter. Worked great in XP.
With the KX drivers on 7, I can't get any sound from the X-Box. I've Googled this(or Topekaed.... ) and can't seem to find the answer.

I think it's a SETTING in the KX mixer, but I can't seem to figure it out. Any help is MUCH appreciated.

DaveJust to update, I got it working. Apparently by default, the KX drivers have the line out on the sound card muted.

I finally found the place in the settings to un-mute it and now have sound with the Xbox 360 in Win 7.

I know this was kind of a wonky call for help, but a lot of folks VIEWED my issue, so thanks for taking a look!
I've never used the KX drivers for sound, so, it's been a good learning experience.

Anyway, all set!!. Thanks!Good to hear you're fixed up...

Solve : is there software/utility to read/open windows file directory index??

i'm looking for software/method that can open windows file index for windows 7 and SHOW the file directories on all hard discs.

firstly am using windows 7. I noticed how more powerful the search/index function is......i was hoping to look at the ''library'' of all these files as windows does while it searches.

i imagine that windows keeps a 'catalog'/index of all files and their location on the computer. i had a FAILED hard disk and i just want to look at the names of those files from he dead hard-drive, but hopefully memorized/indexed/catalogued by windows)....some downloads....so that i can go about downloading/replacing the LOST data. How dead is this HDD ? ?
Indexing service if it can be found won't help much here at all as it will ony be a data file listing files and sizes...not the actual files themselves.
Have you hooked it up as a slave drive to see if you can retrieve the data ? ?

Actually, it has a LOT of information, but there is absolutely no way it can be parsed into anything useful. Most of it would probably be binary data stored from the various installed "IFilters" Word and OpenOffice(I think) both install IFilters and there are a lot of IFilter's implementations installed by default for several file types. each IFilter can store a chunk of data into the Windows Search Database (Indexing service in XP and 2000). This chunk of data is highly unlikely to be human readable or even in a recognizable data format, and is more then LIKELY a custom persistence format created by whoever authored that particular search filter.

Either way, the location is off-limits to any administrator. the data is stored in the "System Volume Information" Folder of the drive: see What's the deal with the System Volume Information folder?

However: even if you get access to it, there is no way you will be able to easily understand any of the data that is stored. In fact it's unlikely to even have paths stored at all; who knows how it stores it's indexing data. it might store it by folder; it might even compress the entire thing using a compression format, thereby making the entire thing unintelligible.Thanx for the clarification BC...

ummm...it is really dead.... cant it had an I/O error.
have tried so many high level and low level softwares to recover it........i just cant get into it.
tried hirens, erd, knoppix.....just cannot get into the disk..always returns a ''not responding to commands' error.Ahh, so you thought that windows stored the index data for, say, a USB drive or other drives, on the system drive.

This is not the case; index information for files on a drive are stored on that drive.

Solve : Spreadsheet?

Hello,

I'm TRYING to keep track of the time I've spent on my business in a spreadsheet.
However, I can't just write down how many hours I've worked, I need to specify what I did in those hours. However, since there will only be 5 definitions or so to CHOOSE from I was WONDERING if it was possible to perhaps make OpenOffice.org Calc to automatically add an hour to a counter when I type "L" for labour anywhere in the spreadsheet.

In case that doesn't make sense, I've added an interpretation of what I'd like to do with this post as a screenshot.

Thanks in advance

Solve : Microsoft Office Home and Business 2007????

I have Microsoft Office Home and Business 2007. My question is, I have tried to set up a standard email with an ATTACHMENT, and send it to different receipients many times. I tried some solutions some have given me and they didn't work. I was told I need Microsoft Outlook Express to do an email over and over again with an ATTACHMENT. Is that correct, if so I need to get it. Also, is there a way to fax with a laptop wireless? If so, can I buy a scanner and do it that way? Thanks.Quote from: joepinger on April 01, 2010, 08:34:19 AM

There's no such VERSION of Office. I assume you mean Home and Student, which does not have Outlook, the email client.

Quote
I was told I need Microsoft Outlook Express to do an email over and over again with an ATTACHMENT.
You're running WINDOWS Vista, right? So, you don't have, and can't INSTALL, Outlook Express. But, you have Windows MAIL. So, use it. Attachments are no problem.

Any of the aforementioned email clients, Outlook Express, Outlook, and Windows Mail would apply to POP maill accounts, not a webmail account such as gmail, Yahoo! Mail, or Hotmail. Do you have a POP email account? Many people use a POP email account provided by their ISP. But, sending attachments via a webmail account should also be no problem. So, your question dosen't make a lot of sense. What type of email account are you currently using?

Solve : Encrypting system files?

Answer»

Hi, I was just wondering if it is safe to use EFS on important system files such as system32 documents and executables. I just want to make sure it is safe to do so before I actually do it. Thanks.I wouldn't. First of all, what's the purpose? Second, if you ever LOSE the key you're completely out of luck. You can't encrypt system files. Since they will be encrypted with your account, the system files will be inaccessible to any other account, including administrator, Local Service, ETC. Making the computer entirely unbootable.

Additionally, what are you trying to protect? What does encrypting, say, shell32.dll give you? Nothing. it makes the text green.

Encryption is about protecting secrets. encrypting a file that millions of other people have isn't protecting anything. It's utterly pointless.Quote from: BC_Programmer on March 29, 2010, 10:52:14 AM

You can't encrypt system files. Since they will be encrypted with your <current> account, the system files will be inaccessible to any other account, including administrator, Local Service, etc. Making the computer entirely unbootable.
You know what, I'm embarrassed to admit I hadn't even thought of that.A lot of people recommend whole disk encryption for laptops, or any other hard drive that might fall into the wrong hands. I don’t know anything about EFS, but Truecrypt will encrypt your whole hard drive and make it inaccessible to anyone who doesn’t have the password.

Once you boot up and log in the encryption is transparent and doesn’t affect the use of the drive. I had my laptop disk encrypted for a year or two before I upgraded to Windows 7. I just haven’t bothered to encrypt the new installation, but I probably will. It protects files you don’t usually think about like page files, hibernation, deleted and temp files.
This is an important point right here.

People refer to "protecting" their files.

Protecting the files from what? I mean seriously, is there a band of thieves DEAD set at stealing all your Word documents or something? It just seems silly. In fact, EFS is far more likely to prevent the owner from accessing the file; especially if you use it on a removable drive. Like if you store your top secret letters to your nephew on a removable NTFS drive and encrypt them, and then forget about the drive, and reformat your OS... Now you cannot access the files at all. That IMO does not constitute protecting files.

Files are not something that protecting. Secrets are what EFS is designed to protect. If there is nothing secret about what is in the file then it doesn't need protecting.

Also (IMO) protecting a file is properly done by backing it up.Quote from: BC_Programmer on March 30, 2010, 08:09:24 PM

+1We all live very different lives and use our computers for our own particular purposes. For gaming machines or HOME media PCs, security and encryption are not of much concern. But for PCs used as ‘electronic file cabinets’ security can be a major issue.

I keep PDFs of all my bank and credit card statements, medical records, tax returns, wills, trusts, investments and other things that could be used to steal my money and identity. It is a matter of principle to protect these things from being compromised. Encryption is one of many steps I can take to reduce the risk of loss.

Both laptops and external drives are at HIGHER than average risk of being lost or stolen in the course of daily life, so I agree with you that data backups are essential to good computer practice. But backups are to keep you from losing your data. Encryption is to keep other people from getting your data. That’s the difference.

Solve : No RS232 support?

Answer» FIRST, I appologize for this being so long-----I have a laptop I was given to use at work that is dual booted into Windows 98 and XP PROFESSIONAL. The Windows 98 is being used for the DOS architecture only. It is not a full operating system setup. I use this DOS for operating a data acquisition machine. However, this new laptop does not have an RS232 port for the DB9 adapter cable that is on the data machine. What I am TRYING to do is to use a USB CONVERSION cable as this laptop has many USB ports. I know I need a USB driver for this to work. I went to the adapter's webpage and downloaded the driver for Win98 (as there is no driver support for DOS). Here is my dilemna: being that Win98 is not a full operating system, the driver will not load. Is there some way I can manually place the driver in config.sys and autoexec.bat in the DOS architecture. I have tried many configurations that did not work. Unfortunately this data system has to run in DOS only.No.
It would have to be a driver written specifically for DOS to work properly.Oh, also I went in and enabled the USB legacy support in the BIOS before making anymore chnages. How do I get a driver for USB then?. Search for DOD USB drivers.
Why can't you do a full install of Win98 and just run thae external stuff in DOS mode ? ?
Is there a reason your data acquisition can't be done in WinXP? Or is the DA software DOS based? Can you tell me more about the DA machine or system? I was a data acquisition and control design engineer for more years than I care to admit here. I knew this problem was coming and is probably beginning to hit hard now, since they have stopped making laptops with RS-232 ports and parallel ports. Most DA interfaces are still RS-232 and the equipment has lifetimes of 20-30 years. This is a noise data acquisition setup that has to run in DOS. I tried to use a FULLY installed WinXP with no luck. I don't know why the laptop did not come with all of the Win98 software. I did not set it up because it is a leased unit. But now I find myself with this dilemna.Belay my last!! (sorry military talk). This data acquisition is what is known as a General Purpose Data Acquisition System (GPDAS) and was orginally written as a DOS system. There is no Windows support. You could try an adapter like this.

I DOS to USB all the time. That in itself is somewhat tricky but not difficult if you understand DOS, config.sys & autoexec.bat
Unfortunately, you're not USB to USB, you're USB to USB to RS-232.

There was a thread here, not too long ago about USB for DOS. Search this forum and Google the same.

The adapter shown will require Windows, DOS support does not exist. If you can "force" it to work under DOS is unknown. You'll probably have to buy an adapter and attempt to make it work under DOS.

I'd say dilemma is an understatement.

Solve : Program to record games with?

I think this is the right sub-forum to place this in, if not just move it
I tried a few programs to record with.
WeGame, Fraps, GameCam.
So i wanted to record while i play MODERN Warfare 2 or a other game.
GameCam somewhy did not work for me.
Fraps worked but was unregistered, so only 30 seconds per record.
WeGame worked great but it did not record the sound somewhy.

About WeGame:
It does say i need to have Stereo Mix enabled, and i have, it also says that sometimes the sound just wont work for some people.

About Fraps:
Well i ain't really wanna buy it, that's why i tried others.

What is different since the last time the system worked properly (new hw, sw, virus, error, etc)? With the little information you've provided my first guess would be malware. RUN full scans with both your anti virus utility AND MalwareBytes and REPORT back.

Solve : text editor help?

Answer»

Is there another FREE text EDITOR aside from OpenOffice out therehttp://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1T4GGLL_enUS304US305&q=free+text+editorOpenOffice is a desktop APPLICATION suite... not a text editor.

It doesn't even with a text editor. a Text Editor edits text. Microsoft word and the Open OFFICE word PROCESSING module... well, they are word processors.

Different purposes.

Solve : Nero Vision 4 Can't Burn Dual Layer DVDs?

Answer»

Hi,

Over the past week, I haven’t been able to use Nero Vision 4 to burn Verbatim Dual Layer Data DVDs even though I can burn Verbatim Single Layer DVDs WITHOUT any problem.

When I try to burn a Dual Layer Data DVD I get the following error message: E: Philips DVD+RW DVD8631
Generating DVD high compatibility borders
Session fixation error
X Could not perform end of Disc-at-once
X Burn process failed at 2.4 (3,324KBS)

Some other factors that may be helpful are:
1.DMA is on
2.I have the LATEST firmware installed for my Burner
3.I have no other RECORDING software on my computer
4.I only encounter a problem with dual layer dvds.
5.This problem seems to have started after I started using re-writable DVD for a project.
6.I have used other dual layer dvds (Maxell) and had the same problem.
7.I cleaned the lens with a Maxell laser lens cleaner. It didn’t help.
8.8. I tried burning at a slower speed (2x). No Change.

I’d appreciate any help anyone can give me in solving this problem.

Radioron
Even though you have tried 2 blank medias ID try another...
Also it may be the burning app itself...DLoad and install CDBurnerXPro...FREE.
3rd thing to consider is you are burning in session mode...many burners have issues with this mode.
Id also suggest not using this format and instead assembling each burn project as a finalised session instead of leaving the re-writable open for later additions...

Best of Luck and LET us know...

Solve : MS Outlook "Reading Pane" has disappeared...?

Answer»

My MS Outlook (2003) reading pane has simply disappeared. I've TRIED to get it to come back by selecting "bottom" "RIGHT" or "off" under the options. I've tried restarting MS Outlook. I've even rebooted. No luck at all. Any other suggestions or possibilities as to where it might have gone? It doesn't appear to have been minimized or "hidden." I'm HONESTLY out of things to try. Any help is appreciated! No suggestions then? Darn it, it's really sad not having it. Really sad.Well, we certainly WANT to alleviate your sadness. I think this may apply to your situation: Outlook 2003 TAKES longer than expected to populate the preview pane when you receive an encrypted e-mail message

Solve : Ms Excel Font Case?

Answer»

i want to know the shortcut key used for changing the font case in ms excel ? shift+f3 is used for such purpose in ms word but in excel its not working. i have 2007 version of office. it irritates alot when you have typed the (text) data & in the end you see that the font case is not correct. kindly help meYou have font controls on the Home ribbon. Why aren't you using them to set your font? I hate it when people ask for a specific answer and you suggest something different. rofl
By the way there is no way to change to all upper through the ribbon (unless there are hidden ribbon functions I don't know about)

Anyway:

Quote

The short answer is no, but that's also the unhelpful answer - you haven't said what form the data takes, but if it is a database, the QUICKEST way to do it is to select all, copy, then paste into Word - use words format change case menu to fix the problem, then reverse the process to get it back to Excel. Excel itself doesn't have a title case function, so if this method doesn't work you would need to write a custom function which went through every cell in the workbook (or better, a given range) and carried out the appropriate formatting. I can write a suitable macro for you if this would help

The simple way to change your text to uppercase or lowercase is to use the respective UPPER("text") and LOWER("text") functions of Excel. e.g. you have a text "hello" in cell A1 and you would like to change this to "HELLO". What you do is you click on the cell A1 and in the formula bar you write: =UPPER("HELLO"). If it's a lot of text then I would just copy/cut the text that is already in the cell and place it between =UPPER("").

That's what I know so far. What would be nice is to write a macro or VBA that reacts to the push of a shortcut key and does just that (LOWER("") and UPPER("") fuctions). ONE could do this. I don't know how to, yet. If there are any friendly programmers out there =P LOL, please write a neat little VBA script that fulfills this youngman's desires. Thanks!

Treval

Well, shucks now, my brain just focused on font and competely overlooked the word following it, i.e. case.

Here's a macro:

Sub UpperCase()
Dim Cell As Range
For Each Cell In Selection.Cells
If Cell.HasFormula = False Then
Cell = UCase(Cell)
End If
Next
End Sub

It can be applied to a range of cells all at one TIME. Thanks and I hope the OP will be happy with it. =Pthnkx for your help. Upper & lower case in formula tab is a good idea. thank u verymuch. but there is another thing that how can i get the first letter of every word in selected text/cell in upper case ? again i will give the example of ms word that if you continue pressing shift+f3 then you will see the variation (all upper case, all lower case and first letter upper case). can i bring this thing from ms word in ms excel ? i am totally unaware of creating / using macro. is it possible to do that stuff in excel which is available in ms word ?Using the PROPER function in a formula such as =PROPER(A2) will do that.

an i bring this thing from ms word in ms excel ?
I think that question is a bit over-simplified but the answer is basically no. KEEP in mind you're comparing a word processing program with a spreadsheet program. They are designed for different purposes. You're TALKING about program design to someone who is barely familiar with software. =PQuote from: Treval on March 28, 2010, 12:34:55 PM

Oh, come on, now. My reply was not technically complex at all. What's complicated about:

I think that's a point he needs to recognize and I don't know how it can be stated any simpler. 1. He could not know what you mean by 'processing words'
2. idem + 'spreadsheet'
3. idem + 'design of a program'

Here's how I would say it:

Keep in mind that Word and Excel don't do the same. =PPeople aren't stupid. they know what the word "designed" means. It's like.... you don't have to be an architect to know what people mean when they say what a building was designed for.

Anyways, I wanted to post the "propercase" version of Soybeans macro:

Code: [Select]Sub ProperCase()
Dim Cell As Range
For Each Cell In Selection.Cells
If Cell.HasFormula = False Then
Cell = StrConv(Cell,vbProperCase)
End If
Next
End Sub
No, I actually don't know what you mean by "this building was designed for". A building can have a function? O.o
Aren't all buildings the same? So many million factors..Quote from: Treval on March 28, 2010, 09:45:04 PM
No, I actually don't know what you mean by "this building was designed for".

You don't design a department store the same way you design a two bedroom rancher.I don't know what a rancher is.. =P

I have both coppies of Office 07 installed ...
Where did you get these "coppies"? Please explain how you got into the situation where you have two installations of Office 07. Or, in other words, if you had Office 07 installed once, why did you install it again? One of the coppies is a home trial that I got from the MS site. The other is a copy of Pro that I installed off of a legal installation disk, thing is that I have been just useing it for trail useage CAUSE I dont really need to have a copy installed except for my one class. As it turns out though that I need it for my other classes. Do you see both editions of Office in your Add/Remove Programs panel? What "uninstall programs" did you use? What registry cleaner did you use? Thanks Soybean

Yes, just tried that but it wont let me uninstall it. I THINK a remover tool from MS Quote from: soybean on March 28, 2010, 10:23:15 AM

I SAID that I had, thing is that I cant uninstall them threw it. Currently right know I can only accept suggestions. It takes a while for the laptop to start for one an I'll be leaveing here soon. How many different machines are attempting to fix all at the same time here ? ?Approxiatly about four, but not all the same. One I am not at the location of the machines an Two this is stuff that I have been facing with for a good couple mths sadly. Three I just FINALLY thought of tring to get back on here a while ago an ask these matters.Quote from: Gin on March 28, 2010, 10:27:51 AM

"it" is singular, I believe. Them would be plural.

Anyway, this may be your solution: How to manually uninstall the 2007 Office system if you cannot uninstall it by using the "Add or Remove Programs" feature
I stand corrected I did try shearching ms, but its a big a complex thing. In retro spec I suppose thats a thanks as wellQuote from: Gin on March 28, 2010, 12:26:16 PM

You've heard of Google, right? I got the MS link from Google, not by going to microsoft.com and then doing a search. I did, but I suppose what you PUT in varied from what I have. I have yet to try it, but I have something to go on know.

Still Thanks
