Can I add an up and/or down arrow in the text using Word and Excel?I think you'll have to expand your explanation of what you want to do. As stated in your original post, it doesn't make MUCH sense, in my opinion.

Are you working withh Word and Excel files that are larger than what can be displayed on one screen? If so, then you should see a scroll bar on the right side of your screen and you can use it to move up and down the page. Or, you can use arrow KEYS, PgUp, PgDn, Home, and End keys to navigate a large file. I do know how to use the scroll bars on the FAR left. What I need to do is insert an up or down arrow within the text of a document.An arrow? I'm still not following you. In Word, you can insert "bookmarks" at various points in a document and then create hyperlinks to those bookmarks. Hmm, my mis-interpretation, I guess, but I you could have clearly stated you were not talking about a navigation tool, just a mere image of an arrow.

ANYONE know about gpg? I had some scripts running to deycrpt a FILE. After I moved everything over to an new machine and installed gpg4win the scripts don't WORK. When I run the deycrpt script I get a error saying that it can't connect to the S.gpg-agent and then a box pops up to have me manually enter the PASSPHRASE. When I enter it and click ok it works fine.

I WANT to get rid of the manual step.

How can i hide icons/options from control panel so no one else can see who is using the computer, just LIKE in corporates where almost all the options are either disabled or hidden . SORRY, I'm not sure what you want to do. Do you want to keep OTHERS from knowing you are on the network, do you want to remove specific applets from control panel, do you want to prevent other users from accessing control panel, or is it something else?No, i am not on the network. It is a home PC. But some times guests who visit do use the computer and can modify the settings. I want to prevent them doing it. Please help me so no one except me can access the control panel.Create a limited user account for your guests. Or even better, tell your guest what they may and may not do or they won't be permitted to use your computer again.

I need to FIND MUSIC on a hard drive. I have tried and can't boot from the hard drive. It does however SHOW up on my COMPUTER. Is there a program to SEARCH and transfer music or any files to my computer? Thanks for your help.Not exactly sure what you're trying to do. Could you be more specific?

I have a HP 4200 series "All in one " printer that I have used for years through Windows 98, Windows XP, Vista, and for two months, Windows 7 (64 bit).. Suddenly this am, it stopped responding. Message says that it is not there... So I TRIED to re-install it with the original CD. When the installer is running it comes back with another message saying that I need administrator rights to install this. I am the only user and administrator. I have a tried to change users types, inserted other users, but nothing seems to work. This all started when I lost my audio sound drivers after removing some programs that I did not want to buy and I used "system restore" to get my sound back.. Anybody have any ideas??

Thumbnails for Open Office Documents. My problem
Using Open Office 3.2 thumbnails of documents are VISIBLE in Windows Explorer.
Here is a screen shot of Desktop.

In documents 2 and 3 you can SEE the image of the inserted JPG file.
But in Documents 1 and 4 it is not visible. But it is there.

The workaround is to save the file as RTF, open it with WordPad, then insert the JPG again, then save it. Now the Thumbnail is OK.

After the file is converted back to the ODT FORMAT the thumbnail view still shows the EMBEDDED image. But if I have to change the image, Open Office no longer gives the thumbnail with the image. Drives me crazy!

As far as I know, this thumbnail feature is part of Open Office,
- not Windows Explorer.

Is there something I am missing? What should I try next?

Hello. I'm a novice when it COMES to computers so I apologize in advance if I am putting this post in the wrong section.

A few days ago I clicked to open my iTunes, and it was taking a long time to open. It gave me a message that it was looking for my library or something like that. I was FRUSTRATED so I hit cancel and thats was it. When I re-clicked iTunes, my music as WELL as my podcasts were all gone. This made me even more frustrated. I then decided to upgrade from iTunes 9.12 to iTunes 10 to no avail. I googled this problem online and most of them said to uninstall/reinstall and I did PRECISELY that but everytime I do, I get an error message (I attached a picture of what the error message looks like).

Any ideas or solutions to this problem will be greatly appreciated! Also let me know if you need other information.

I have a Dell Inspiron 2600 laptop running with Windows 2000. It's CPU is an Intel P3 1Ghz, and it has 256Mb of ram.

I want a free firewall for this laptop, preferably something that does the job, but is 'lite'. (This laptop is a little slow) I hoped to use Comodo, but the DOWNLOAD SPECS say it is for windows XP up. I have seen a few others that seem to be able to run on Windows 2000, but I was hoping someone has actually tried one, and could give some solid ADVICE as to which firewall to use.

Needing some custom CONTACT fields, I managed to design a FORM using the built-in forms designer. I wasn't able to use the new template style, but it works fairly well. However, I can't seem to get ONE thing to work.

For contacts I have the usual notes field. But I NEED another field for personal INFO that won't get synchronized over to my iPhone.

I call this field "Personal Info". I tried using another notes field, but Outlook won't allow two note fields in a Contact form. So I tried a user defined field, but it won't allow multi-line operation -- only a single line with no carriage returns. I need a field that will allow me to have multiple lines and not sync to my iPhone.

Please help.

Hello FOLKS, I registered way back and don't remember if I needed to enter computer info or what. I think a general answer will fit this.

I have ICON for Microsoft Power Point reader on desktop and I click it and my video folder opens. I can then click on a .pps video and it plays like it is supposed to.

If I OPEN the video folder first and then click on it to play it I get the error message ...

C:\users\home\video\ (name of video) is not a valid win 32 application

The open with program for it is Microsoft Office Component

More of an irritation than anything ELSE.

Thanks Charlie dright click on the .pps file, Open with, choose your program and put a tick in the BOX to always open with that program.... the tic was already there. This is not a big problem. I can just work around it.

If you install only the JRE and do not install the browser-plugins (which might require they be manually removed afterwards), whether you do or do not have Java installed will not have any salient security consideration.

I run Windows XP and Microsoft Office 2007. I don't think further specs will be pertinent to this situation.

I do not know a lot of database or spreadsheet jargon, so I may use confusing words.

I am beginning to think that LOOKUP might not be what I need to do what I am trying to do. All I want is for it to look at a cell reference, use the word therein to match up to the same word in another list, and then return with the adjacent number in the same row.

I do not explain THINGS well, so I will provide pictures as attachments. The words were all replaced with random ones for the purpose of these screen shots for privacy reasons. They may also be blurry because I saved them as jpegs set to high compression to lower their file sizes.

Anyhow, for the purposes of these images, I use the formula:

=LOOKUP(A35,DummyList,Sheet4!B3:B24)

Where A35 is assigned a word from the list on Sheet4 via a drop-down. The list is called DummyList. I then intend it to match the word in A35 to the word in the list on Sheet4, and then return the corresponding number. In this example, I selected the words Salt (in A33, and yes, the upper one is LOOKUP(A33....) and Forget. Beside them they should return the numbers 1.1 (Salt) and 2.1 (Forget). Instead I get 6.0 (Salt, and 1.0 (forget).

If I do it the other way, where it looks up the number and then returns the corresponding word, it is usually bang-on. Here it gets the wrong number, and doesn't give me an error.

Which brings me to the conclusion that LOOKUP is not going to do what I had hoped it would do, and I don't understand all of the FUNCTIONS, EVEN after reading some of the help files.

Can someone further explain the mechanics of LOOKUP and hopefully suggest something that will be more accurate? I need 'find word, retrieve adjacent cell', not 'find number, retrieve adjacent cell'.

I appreciate anyone who takes their time to read this, and apologize for my round-about way of TYPING and getting to the point. I've done SEARCHES, but could not come up with much help.

I have 2 monitors and used to be able to go in to control panel, display, settings and extend to the 2nd one. Now it does not even show up. Any suggestions? The monitor that is working is plugged in to the same card, so I don't know what the problem could be.Sometimes the video cards have a driver utility that takes control over these options generally there is a tool to be found to access these features. Is this an ATI or nVidia video card or some other card to point you to the utility that might be present?

I have systems with both ATI (AMD) Radeon Video Cards as well as nVidia GeForce Video Cards and they each have a utility installed to configure dual displays and fine tune features.I don't know what kind of card it is. It was added by prior owner. As mentioned in first post-it used to work and now it does not. I opened the tower and the make is FATAL1TY. STRANGE that the VGA side works but the DVI side does not. I took the card out and put it back in hoping that when I restarted the computer it would search for drivers. Nope, nothing.
When I go to Device Manager there is nothing under Display adapters and there is a question mark next to "Other devices" and then under that it says Video CONTROLLER (VGA Compatible) with a question mark.

System Info for Windows...also Free...Nevermind, I got it fixed. When I took the card out and put it back in, the computer did not automoatically identify new hardware and offer to look for drivers. I WENT into add hardware and chose the video card and it downloaded them-GeForce 8500 GT.

So strange that it did this all of a sudden. Glad I have dual monitors now though!!

Looking at the info you SHARED... never knew that Dell used Fatal1ty gaming boards.

I had a similar Fatal1ty gaming board with SLI running Windows XP over 5 years ago with tons of RED surface mount LEDS everywhere so it came to life with a red glow in the tower, and integrated POST diagnostic Green LED readout. I got rid of this back in early 2009 when it sadly would not take a better than a Pentium 4 socket 775 CPU of which I had the 3GHz HT CPU, and games I played required a better ( true dual-core vs Hyperthreaded single-core ) CPU at the time because they were lagging out as the CPU was pegged at 90 to 100% for physical and virtual HT cores almost constant trying to keep up with Need for Speed Carbon and World of Warcraft. So I bought a cheap Dual-Core AMD CPU/Motherboard bundle which was 3x more powerful than it for $65 and was able to move my 1.5GB of 667Mhz DDR2 RAM and Video Card GeForce 7800GT over for the easiest Motherboard/CPU combo upgrade by using all the other original hardware from the Fatal1ty build which was all compatible with the newer dual-core upgrade. Sadly that Fatal1ty board would not take a Core 2 Duo, otherwise I'd probably be still running it today. I gave my board away to a friend who was hard up for a basic computer, and its still running today 5 years later. Good Motherboard, but sadly limited to Pentium 4 Class socket 775 CPU

But the AMD Dual-Core Motherboard/CPU combo upgrade now made these games play without lag that I had prior. I almost bought a new video card thinking it was video card related, but the CPU showing it pegged stood out that I needed more processing power as well as these games were suggesting Dual-Core CPU's for proper gameplay in the game spec requirements.

Are you gaming with this system with modern games? If so which ones and what type of performance are you getting out of it?

When you receive these emails, are the pictures included as Attachments, or are they embedded in the message? Right t clik the image in the email and save it to the desktop...
Then compose the e-mail and send it as an attachment...I receive an e-mail with multiple pictures but when I forward it some or all of the pictures are missing. I get a warning that they are missing with a question if I want to continue sending it anyway. I tried this in both live mail and g-mail (same message)same results.

Yes. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it is my understanding that Task Scheduler kills the exe file and doesn't actually shut down the program properly. it's what I was told on another site...

After much searching I was able to find a piece of freeware that works. It's called System Scheduler. Per the company:


"With the free version, you can have the Window Watcher feature to run at 5pm, and set the Window Watcher to close the application. This does a normal close - not a Kill.

Replace the [seconds left to shutdown] with the time to shutdown.For eg: if yu want to shutdown pc at 5pm and now time is 3pm just calculate 2*3600 = 7200. Then type there 7200 and when timer reaches 0 it will force shutdown. If you wannt to cancel timer just type in RUN:

I have Avast! Free and when I run it's Software Updater it tells me to update, AMONG other things, Flash Player ActiveX and Flash Player Plugin ....................... neither will work!
I DOWNLOAD the programme but when I GO to install it nothing happens! If I re-try I get a MESSAGE telling me "Only a single instance of this APPLICATION can run", what's going on?

I am UNABLE to open a .wps file. i keep getting a message stating WORKS cannot open "c\users\hp\desktop\(filename)\.wps. The file may be in use by another application, the file format may not be supported by any of the installed converters, or the file may be corrupt.
I have rebooted my laptop but still get the same message. Other .wps files open correctly. It is just this one which doesn't and the information I have on it is IRREPLACEABLE. Any help would be appreciated.What version of Works do you have on your computer? What version was the file saved in?

Unattended install of OS + Software Applications = You will need to either create an image that will be used for the installation from a prior manual build process using software such as Ghost or use a Windows Server system and RIS or WDS depending on the Server version and the OS to be pushed to systems.

If this is a single computer or small group of computers and you dont have a Windows Server to set up RIS or WDS on then creating individual images is the best way to go. If you have hundreds or thousands of systems then you will want to use RIS or WDS to push an install to a system unless all workstations are the same exact model or you have say less than 10 different hardware configuration models in place to have 10 individual images for.

I have used RIS in the past and you are essentially able to boot a workstation system off of PXE Network Boot service that the RIS server is hosting and select an image to push to the workstation, the system then pushes the installation clean to this workstation as long as the network adapter driver matches to that of the RIS image. Otherwise RIS fails to connect between the Server and workstation. * One trick that I did was I bought some cheap PCI Intel Pro 100 Managed Network Adapters and so the systems that were not the Intel Pro 100 chipset, I would install this adapter temporarily to PXE boot and push the image to the workstation. Then when the system is done, remove this adapter and have the system run off of its other Broadcom etc adapter.

BUT.... With RIS and I believe also with WDS, you STILL need to activate the Windows Installation with MICROSOFT. Also you need to take a single system that is built the way you want all others built and use that to create the installation image for the other systems to be exactly configured to, however they are all running on their own Windows OS keys.

If going with an Image off of an external drive or DVD discs, the only problem you can run into is that its a static image and so all systems built from that image have the same Windows key. If there is a difference in hardware between the system that the image was created on and the system to take the image you can run into problems of a Blue Screen of Death or if your lucky will only have to REACTIVATE Windows with Microsoft within 30 days. Using an external drive is easiest as for your not swapping out DVD1 for DVD2 etc until all discs are installed of the spanned image so its the most realistic unattended installation where discs would require you to check on its progress and remove and insert the next disc etc. Also depending on what is installed it doesnt take long to end up with an image that is 9 DVD's spanned for 36GB for example with a build of Windows 7 64-bit with all updates up to the creation date of the image + MS Office + Accounting software + other software, printers, configurations, etc for a 45 minute build process if using external USB 2.0 hard drive etc to push the image.

Lastly the only drawbacks to RIS and WDS is that if you do this over the network during a time of the day when others need bandwidth and are running a 100mbps network, you will bring the network to its knees for a period of time. My employer did not want to justify upgrading to Gigabit Switches at this location and so I had to perform RIS installations after normal business hours for a while. But then I got my boss to authorize purchase of another Windows 2003 Server license and so I was able to host my own private network in my office that was isolated from the main LAN and I was able to basically pick up a system, set it up on the workbench, PXE boot it, authenticate with server, select image, push image, activate Windows XP Pro key, and then run MS Updates when connecting system to normal network. Then deliver it to the user about 1 hr later built like new from the RIS image. Over the private LAN it took about 20-25 minutes to push a 16.5GB image to HP SFF DC5000 Pentium 4 2.8Ghz systems with 512MB RAM and 80GB HDD's, and the private lan was flashing full bore to push the image to the system.

And the biggest PRO of using RIS or WDS is that you can have multiple systems ( workstations ) receiving this image installation at the same time. ( Although due to network bandwidth limitations, the more that are getting imaged, the longer the process takes to complete! ) The most I had getting an image at once was 20 workstations all getting a fresh install. These systems were part of an internal training room where the business hosted its own internal training program for existing and new employees and an instructor would demonstrate and users would be in this large room at their individual computers and follow along and learn how to do their jobs better or a new software application that is being pushed out to the 7 locations of the business. So when the course was done, I'd wipe them clean of any personal info and have them ready for the next training as clean workstations. I basically started the 20 at the same time on like a Friday and then would check back into work on Saturday and activate the XP keys and have the training classroom I guess you COULD call it ready for class that Monday all fresh ready to roll.

i have an excel spread sheet that contains city, st and zip in one cell. i need to separate these into 3 indivual cells. My problem is the some of the cities are one, TWO and sometimes 3 words so USING a delimiter of space will not separate them correctly. Any ideas? Thank you,

The link I posted above will work based on the example you gave and other examples. I even tested it on White River Junction which is in Vermont. A 3 part city.

Windows 8 is pretty SIMILAR to Windows 7 so pretty much anything that can run on Windows 7 will run on Windows 8. Of course there is always badly written software that will not run on newer OSS but this is very much the exception rather than the rule.

Objective:
To set up a default margin of 0.3 for the top, bottom, left and right margins.
This is to conserve paper. My school is running far far short of funding for paper, in fact, we already hit the end of our paper budget, and its an extreme problem.

Cutting margins by default WOULD help us out greatly. We would like to KNOW how we can set up these kinds of defaults, erase currently existing defaults, and then distribute the new ones.

We have an idea of distributing the new ones, and that is by using our Ghost server which is capable of sending files to the select groups of computers we desire. (Which, is all student computers, not teacher laptops or computers).

I prefer not having to do this through GPO, since I know I cant get the network guys to do it, but, if thats the only solution, I can make it happen... even if it requires I break into the server room and do it myself.

Operating systems being dealt with:
Windows XP, primarily, as well as a few 2000 machines. Main focus on the XP machines.

Users do need to be able to change margins, for professional documents mainly. The BEST part about Ghost doing all this would be that we can just target student computers, not teacher computers. You need to do this in Group Policy, especially so that you can limit this to students, not teachers. In our SCHOOLS we have WRITTEN our own Print Auditor/Limiter based on Windows Print Server but it basically operates like this commercially available package:

I have a reasonably new Samsung Writemaster burner (which SHOWS up as TSST Corp cd/dvdw sh-s182d) in the properties tag and I use Philips dvd+rw disks for their (and other +rw brands) reusable value.
For burning software l'm using VSO convertxtodvd. (there is only one version installed, but my problem happens with both versions 2 and 3).
So, l insert the disk and it says new disk installed. It initialises, burns, and the disk is formatted and ejected. When l use explore on the disk, there's nothing on it! Run the disk through Imgburn (VERIFY) and it says the disk is empty and needs formatting.
I cannot seem to use this disk again for anything, as it just won't be burnt to. I bought a spindle of 25 disks and at least 10, and counting, seem to have this problem. COULD it be the disks? Could it be the burner? Could it be the software?
Not too worried if there is not a specific answer to this, just some suggestions about what l could look for.

Double check the burn settings...sounds LIKE "finalise CD" is not turned on.Also try different DVD brand, reinstall convertxtodvd (I use this program, and seems to be working flawlessly).

I mean, Adobe took something simple- Viewing PDF files, and managed to create a behemoth that is so unweildy it takes over a minute to start up on a average machine.

I, personally, like PDFs. They are very handy at times, especially for printing forms.

up until today, i can't figure out how to read pdf and insert the contents to database without paying, had to save it in csv format. so keeping 2 types, pdf & csv. pdf for human to read, csv for computer to read.

PDF was designed for viewing documents, not to be a data source for a database, spreadsheet, etc. It doesn't even make sense to discuss PDF as a data source for .csv files to be fed into some other application.

distributing documents as pdf is like distributing text file in .jpg format.
if i have hundreds of pdf files in a folder and need to extract few numbers from it, then i have to torture my self viewing the pdf one by one, scrolling down, and manually input to db. **sigh**
somemore, data can become garbage because of human error while inputting, and then garbage data will cause fatal result in decision making.

why people love to distribute documents in pdf format? html, chm, word or anything else other than pdf would be better.

How do I CHANGE a vob and ifo file into mpeg? Have SEVERAL videos from home camcorder that I need to change to mpg format to be able to edit, then play on my computer. Can anyone tell me how to do this? You need software to do it, not sure of free stuff but have a search, commerically, I think http://www.dvdvideoconverter.com/vob/ does it and Nero.Just a note, the video file is .VOB. All the SUBTITLE, track titles, chapters, ect, are in the .IFO file.

In other words, you WOULD want to convert the .VOB to ANOTHER format, such as .AVI, which can be processed in Windows Movie Maker.

On a second note, you can play the .VOB file with VLC Media Player.A VOB file is actually an MPEG-2 file. Change the extension to .mpg

I can not open Paint shop pro 9. I just restored my computer. I reinstalled everything. The computer runs good, but I can't open PSP9. I have XP. My desktop is a HP. Any help WOULD be great.

ThanksMe too. I had an experience like that. I had to install XP all over again. Do not install the AV until the install is complete. This means you have to have all your stuff on a local media, CD or another HDD. Paint shop has to be one of the last thins you install. Except the AV program.
And no, I don't know why. Spent days and days and days on it.It was the last thing I installed. I had to install it on my laptop, but I would love it to be on my desktop. So frustrating.If you want to pursue this, here is what I might do.
Create a new partition on my desktop PC. large enough to hold a bare XP install. About 7GB should do. Install a bare XP with no updates. The new install will update BOOT.INI so that you have a Multi boot system.

Do not connect to the Internet. No other programs. Just install Paint Shop Pro. You may get a good install this time

This is one good reason to have Multi boot.Sometimes you have programs that just do not get along and the have to be in each in a separate little world.

Such programs remind us of some people!I am not sure if I know how to do that. Sorry, do not MEAN to make it HARD.

This is a partition program that I have used. But you should not try it unless you have a backup of some kind. There is always the possibility that this kind of software =can go bad. I hive never had this one fail, so I would recommend it.
What it does is like the re size feature in Vista. But this will WORK with XP or 2000 or almost any version of Windows. You reduce the size of you main Hard Drive partition by a few gigabytes, Say 7GB. Then you reboot and put in the XP setup CD and run a new install of WINDOW XP in the new or free space of the drive.The new XP will go onto D: instead of C:. I do that so that I can have another environment to try something the does not seem to work right on my main system.And sure 'nuff. I find things that do not work well in the big partition, but will work in the new, smaller partition. Not sure why. Just had a program like that with my Speech Recognition software. And had whet with Paint Shop Pro.

I have an HP PAVILLION 64 bit, with Service Pack 1 (4gb, 500gb) with Vista Home Premium. I'm trying to download a .mov file from my Nikon S6 camera. I'm using the HP Photosmart Essential program. It DOWNLOADS jpg files fine but it skips the .mov file. I can VIEW the file on the camera. The number of the .mov file, DSCN 1733 is skipped on the download so I know it is on the camera. And the same program downloaded .mov files from the same camera automatically with my old computer ( with XP). Help! What's wrong? Is there a SETTING somewhere I need to change? I think it's a limitation for 64 bit PC's - seems to be a common issue. Might need a update for QUICK time...

Today, my start menu decided to move itself over to the right hand SIDE of my screen and the task bar is not in a horizontal line on the bottom of the right hand side anymore. How do I switch this back to its normal position with the start menu on the LEFT hand side on the bottom rather than on the right hand side at the top as it is now? What caused this? 1)Open the file you want to slice by clicking on File, and from there CHOOSE Open.

2)SELECT the slice tool and draw a box to DEFINE the area you want to slice.

3)Next, Go to the slice tool in the menu palette and select the Slice Select Tool. Now double click on the slice. A screen named Slice Options will come.
a)In the Slice Type option choose Image
b)In the name option GIVE your slice a name
c)In the URL option enter the path of the image you want to link.
d)Then you will see 4 more options, these options are optional , and leaving them blank won't effect your slice.

4)To Optimize and Save a file , on the file menu , click save for web and devices.
The Save for web and devices dialog box will be displayed. Now, you can click any one of the tabs available to select a DISPLAY option.Then , click Save. The Save Optimized As dialog box will be displayed. In this dialog box, select the Format option and specify in which format you want to save the file, that is in an HTML format or Image format. Now, enter a file name and select a location for the resulting file or files , and finally , Click Save.
