Hello! I POP up here every so often, and have a quick question for you guys. Basically, I'm in a science fair with a group of 3 people. We are demonstrating data analysis using the program PEAT (PHOTOSENSITIVE Epilepsy Analysis Tool).

Is it possible to lock all computer windows from letting others view them (EX: start menu, shutting down, right click desktop, CTRL+ALT+DEL)? I WANT to KEEP this window maximized, and prevent people from exiting out of it.

My Windows version is XP Professional.

I know there is a program out there for something like this, except it's one of those things you can't put in a few keywords. I'd be very glad if anyone could give me POINTERS. Study this and see whether it provides an adequate solution for you:

I have a logitech Pro 9000 web cam, when I installed it I was running McAfee Site Advisor and everything ran fine. My old McAfee ( Site Advisor) expired and I installed McAfee Antivirus Plus a few days ago, now when I use my web cam the movements have a 1-2 second delay which I never had before, right after I installed McAfee Antivirus Plus I stated getting this problem. Can changing to a different type McAfee cause this? I never had this problem for almost 2 years running the Site Advisor, I OPENED my web cam 5 minutes after installing the Antivirus Plus and it had the delay. Should I re-install my web cam or go back to using McAfee Site Advisor again, any ideas? There are a number of free anti virus software that one seldom hears complaints about. I am using (on different computers) Avast,Avira,and AVG. If i was to state a personal preference it would be for the latest version of Avast (Ver.9).

ANYWAY, if you decide to go for free antivirus I would recommend AVAST. that is my favorite for the past 2 years now.If I download Avast, do I also have to download a firewall too?
Also I keep getting a blue page that tells me my windows have been shut down to prevent damage to my computer, It says the problem is with a file, "Partmgr.sys." and also reads "Page_Fault_in_nonpage_area". This should remove all mcafee software from your computer including the new one. Once you've finished the removal, install your new McAfee Antivirus Plus from the CD again.

I had read on other sites, and it had been recommended to me to GET another more current version of the Rescue Media (even though mine worked last week), and burn another iso image.

IT WAS A WELL KEPT SECRET WHERE THIS ISO WAS!

I asked everyone, at Acronis and many forums.

I finally got from Acronis an iso download. He stated -: The link I have provided you is for ATI 2010 bootable media. It is backward compatible and will be able to restore the images created with ATI 10 personal edition.

It worked! Phew!

I do have a follow up QUESTION though--
Is it the better practice to make a .tib file of your entire system (system reserve, C, mbr) regularly?
or just your whole C drive where programs and data reside?

I reloaded the image.

Now I have the opposite problem Before I could see my external drive but Acronis could not see my internal C drive.

Now on Windows 7, device manager sees my external drive, but there it does not appear in My Computer so now I cannot access my external drive files.

There are no question marks in the device manager. It is listed under Disk Drives.
When I chose safely remove hardware something generic comes up instead of the name of the drive.

I guess I have to uninstall it in device manager? and plug it back in again? I tried that. My computer still does not see the drive in My Computer only in device manager. In Disk Management it is generically listed as Disk 1 basic. I know that is it by the size. It used to be recognized and say Toshiba blah blah.

How do I fix this new problem since the image reload?
Thanks1. I really do not understand your problem with the drive letter C:\

I have used many different BOOT-CD's for many purposes, including SUNDRY Partition managers and also Acronis 10 and Acronis 11.
None of these have EVER shown me any drive letters, they do not know such things.

Drive letters are something special to Windows,
and can be reassigned within Windows.
So if Windows is not running, i.e. Boot-CD is in TOTAL charge, drive letters can only be guessed at.

I learned a long time ago to change the label of every partition to show me the drive letter I wanted it to be, and also its purpose.

2. There is a special GOTCHA with Acronis Secure Zone.
It is a hidden partition which is possible to boot into when otherwise the BIOS would decide there is no CD to use and it is time to run Windows.
Acronis patches the MBR to permit this bypass of a full Windows start-up.

If that Acronis Secure Zone is damaged or destroyed, or discarded by restoring to factory defaults, then if you restore an Acronis image that includes the MBR as it was, when you complete restoration and reboot the first thing to happen after BIOS is the MBR wants to see the Acronis Secure Zone.

It HAPPENED to me and I had to use another Boot-CD to fix my MBR before I could run Windows again.

I was using a Partition Manager under Windows to shift a data partition (i.e. no system files were at risk).
Something happened and all seven partitions vanished.
Even the Partition manager could not see them until I launched its Recovery Wizard.
That saw about 24 different partition boundaries due to many changes to the size of this partition and the replacement of that etc. So many possibilities for overlapping partitions.
PANIC
It was a great help to see my labels with the drive letter clues.
I think I need to add a further clue of the date whenever I change its boundaries.
I retrieved the six I needed.
The other partition was the Acronis Secure Zone which I have never needed,
and the Partition Manager had always said it was an unknown format at the best of times because of how Acronis had hidden and protected it.

I decided that I had no need for the Acronis Secure Zone,
and I certainly was not going to risk losing again the six which had caused me such panic,
so I got out of there as fast as possible.

I had the 6 partitions, but no Windows, no Internet, and no Google to tell me how to fix things.
More panic until I worked out for myself that the MBR needed fixing.
I remembered there was something called fixmbr, but had no idea how to use it.
Google just is not around when you need it most ! !
All I had were my BOOT-CD's.
Relief, Partition manager CD had a rebuild MBR option.
Windows at last ! !

I now ensure the Internet is disconnected and all Comodo Security is disabled before using a partition manager under Windows to do anything more advanced than changing a drive letter,
and feel safest from any external disturbance if I use the Partition Manager BOOT-CD.
You live and learn.

So guys, Im having trouble with photoshop.

I keep getting that "Scratch Disks are Full" Error.

Well this ISNT possible because I LOOKED it up.

There is not such temp files for me to delete.

And I only have 5GB space on my drive, but THATS because those scratch disks took up all my space.

So now I barely have space for anything and I cant make my pictures and I cant find my temp files.

Im getting annoyed and just WANT this fixed.

I did a clean install of Windows 7 on my laptop. I was reinstalling the original drivers and software for my Sony VAIO. It did a restart and when I tried to log in, I could not. I must have made a TYPO when I changed the Admin password. I cannot use a CD BOOT as I was not done installing all of the drivers, it does not recognize the CDrom. I cannot use an external CD drive because my laptop does not recognize it either. I downloaded a password recovery program but it asks for my Admin password to RUN it. At this point I am ready to hit my laptop and myself with a hammer. Do I need to reinstall everything again?Quote

Why does my SCREEN go white when I EXPAND to full screen when streaming from all on demand services. Views fine in mini screen mode..?What are you USING to play the videos?I guess I'm using whatever player that the TV channel provides. I'm running XP and medisa player when playing a DVD RUNS in full screen fine.I'd suggest downloading and installing the latest driver for your video card as a first step in troubleshooting the problem.I've had a right good tinker with it and I've found the problem. The Adobe Flash Player settings were set to "enable hardware acceleration", whatever that means. I unticked the box and the full screen plays on all the different steaming channels. I'm glad it was something simple as if I'd tried to update the video card drivers I think I'd have got into all sorts of problems. THANKS for your advice..Thanks for the update. My neighbor installed OpenOffice from Oracle on my computer

Does anyone have any experience with the OpenOffice.org PROGRAM?

I have two questions when I opened the spreadsheet program I noticed it did not have the “AutoSum” key for spread sheets like Excel has. However it does have the Auto Sum key on the tool bar at the bottom of the page it but will only show the total on the bottom but will not place the total on the spread sheet

The other question is it appears once the spreadsheet program is opened it must be closed before another program can be opened such as Text Document.



Is there a solution to these two problems ?

I'm running Outlook 2003 on XP Pro. I want to configure my outlook so that I ALWAYS REPLY in HTML format, regardless if I am replying to an email in HTML or in Rich Text (or anything else!).

I know about the issues SURROUNDING this: programs filter out HTML from emails, people who send in Text generally only SEE text.

That's great, I just want to know how to do it.

I have a rather odd question. My HP laptop desktop COLOUR is STUCK on this purplish colour I changed it to a few months back, something it's saved SOMEHOW as it's still there long after I've installed Windows 7. I can change the desktop image and the colour, etc, but whenever I restart my laptop the desktop colour reverts to that same purple. Any help/suggestions is/are appreciated. ^^I ought to mention also I've tried rebooting/restoring and at one person's suggestion deleted folder named ActiveDesktop under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies.I wouldn't take advice from someone suggesting deleting REGISTRY entries...

I re-installed The Print Shop 23 Deluxe because on my main page, it has a dashed square in the middle of it and I don't EVEN know how it got there. I thought by re-installing the software it would re-set itself, but it's still there.

Hi, I have a collection of old backups donated to our archive but we are unable to open them. They were created on 8th Feb 1988 on 3.5 inch floppies and they each contain a backup.001 file, a control.001 file and a restore file which is an MS dos application file. We have no idea what material is on the file but it may be important to preserve in our archive. Does anyone have any idea how we could open these files?

In order to restore the files to their original state, you would need to run the restore command from a version of DOS (any version that has it will do).Thanks for that, I have done a quick search to download an ms dos system and the results were mind boggling. ARe you able to recommend a program that will be able to do this for a 1988 backup and be able to run on a Windows vista pc?

To restore a backup created with the Backup program included with MS-DOS 5.0, use the Restore.exe program located in the Other\Oldmsdos folder on the Windows 95 CD-ROM. To run this program, copy it to a folder on your hard disk, and then run it from a command prompt, making sure to use the appropriate syntax.

Windows did their 'Compact all Files' in Outlook Express. As always, it all ended up in my Recycle Bin as .bak stuff. Usually I just empty R/Bin, but this time I moved it all across to my 'back-up' Drive. Went back to O/L/E, and all messages, all people (except one person for some obscure reason) GONE! Thousands of 'em.

D'you know what my ...second...thought was? PHEW!

But, unfortunately, I can't let it go...have to know what happened, of course. (I've checked my back-up driver, and all I can find is a pile of those 'orrible .dbx things).

Any ideas? (Please do tell me to post it elsewhere if necessary. Thanks). The Compacting procedure always puts .bak files in Recycle Bin in case you need to restore from them. So, what you saw in R/B was NORMAL.

And, those "horrible .dbx things" are your OE message files. To get your messages back, try importing those .dbx files. And, be sure not to delete those .dbx files on your backup drive.Quote

I ran across this registry optimiser (Advanced Registry Optimizer 2010 ), of course it doesn't correct all of the errors unless you buy the pro/upgraded version. I would assume that most including me wouldn't know which ones are necessary to correct and which ones aren't. Are there any safe FREE programs and also a safe guide to doing this? I know you need to back up your registry but why wouldn't SYSTEM restore work if things got dicey so to speak.The consensus opinion here is basically to leave Registry cleaners alone at all COSTS...Never use any registry optimizer. docx file and xml documents will not open properly, im told they are office 2007, and that is what i have on my computer, I even tried a DIFFERENT computer also with office 2007 and no luck, I just get bits and pieces of document but also lots of errors. Not sure if i need to install something else?
Or any other ideas to try?

Specifically, what "lots of errors" are you getting? What is the computer telling you?HI, well, this came from a college professor, so im assuming it was UPLOADED right. I saved it to my desktop, in the main folder i have 3 other folders and an xml doc, most of the files wont open and the ones that do, I can READ some info, but then a bunch of gibberish, almost like its not formatted properly, or that im missing something to tie all files together.
All the xml files are 1kb each, and open in IE, but also SHOWS all the commands. I dont know if im explaining this right,
So, not really any errors, but not formatted properly, or something.
Any ideas??Can you ask other students who might have received the same file(s) whether they had such problems? Were the files compressed/zipped when you downloaded them? Repair Install Of Office...

I was tearing my hair out trying to figure out why "sometimes Thunderbird deletes from the server as I expect, and sometimes it leaves deleted items there."

I never figured we need a Get Mail command in order to complete the delete-from-server operation, because it's also set to empty trash on exit. But that little tidbit solved my problem, so I just wanted to thank you.

In what environment or activity where you in when this error report CAME?Click the 'click here' LINK in that error you had and GIVE us the 'technical details'.I would SERIOUSLY suggest you uninstall and reinstall your sound drivers or just use uninstall what you have currently and install different drivers. I had this same ISSUE and decided to go with Realtek HD drivers instead of what I had in the first place. Give it a try.

Firstly, I'm sorry if this is in the wrong section. Not sure if it would fit here or in the Software forum. Please move it if its in the wrong section.

Now my problem. I was using Firefox and a pop up from Spybot came up about a process of Firefox that should be blocked. I didn't really read it properly and just clicked yes. I know, big mistake.

It seems Spybot has blocked Firefox, WHENEVER I try to open a website, FF crashes. I opened Spybot to see if I could undo what I did and found nothing. I clicked the resident and it says:

27-09-2010 16:22:44 Encountered and terminated Fraud.ActiveSecurity in C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugin-container.exe!

What should I do?

I am trying to transfer my songs from my Ipod to itunes. Plenty of tutorials, which I started to do, but one of the first STEPS is to open My Computer, then open the Ipod, but there is no Ipod there. Someone in chat suggested making sure manage manually was checked in itunes...it is...didn't work, then I tried downloading the program suggested...IpodCopy off of SourceForge...it's just files, no program automatically runs, but if I open like the "bin" file...it asks to run, I say ok, then it asks for Ipod Mount Point, what the heck is that? Try as I might, I can't seem to find a solution to my issue. I have a spreadsheet and would like to save the spreadsheet date
as text and have the data output as a fixed column width with no delimiters (like an implied table) . I've tried altering each column in the spreadsheet using data, text to COLUMNS..No luck. When I copy and paste the data into a txt doc. the data remains as delimited.
The original input to the spreadsheet is in delimited format.

Anyone have any ideas for this?
ThanksYou can USE Save As and choose "Text (MS-DOS) .txt" but you still have delimiters. I think you'd need a VBA MACRO such as the one in the spreadsheet on this page LINKED to here:

But I would prefer the time-honoured method of installing, as an additional printer, the "generic/text-only" printer and then, from the Excel print menu, choosing (1) that printer (2) checking the "Print to file" box, and (3) supplying a file name.

After computer boots I get the message "computer must be restarted for updating to continue" then the option of yes or no. No matter what I have tried this will not go away, NORMALLY this is not a problem as I just say NO and everything works as normal. The sender is unknown to me but the topic is quite familiar, although I can't remember if it's the exact title that I originally sent, as it is quite old. The message reads RE; to what I think was the topic but not 100% sure?. The message has no attachment/s. The original topic(or a version) that I sent ,was sent to the EDITOR of a forum (which supposedly does not reveal email addresses) and a version was also sent to a number of government officials (but who knows what government officials do, PERIOD? ). It is my UNDERSTANDING that viruses are normally contacted through opening ATTACHMENTS (as opposed to the email itself) but I've read somewhere, where someone , said the email itself could possibly cause problems. I've encountered several viruses/infections previously, and although this email is important to me I won't open it unless I get the OK.

I need to find some software that will allow me to un-compile and then re-compile software installation packages. The goal here is to send/push out software to the users on our system and have them install the software with the configuration we want them to have. I.E. we have AVG 11 Business that I need specific CONFIGURATIONS on that will CONNECT the PC to our admin console. I can push the software silently but it installs with the DEFAULT configuration. If I could un-compile it, I could edit it and then send with my settings. Any ideas?I do not know if this will help but 7-zip seems to be able to open most of the setup files I have as if they were zip files.

Edit: I just realized, it is probably against the license agreement to edit the installer.I actually have a support request in for the AVG exe. But I also have some company owned software from the previous SA, but cannot track down the actually uncompiled files. I have used 7-zip for years and never knew it could do that, but it did. Why would they need to that? Outlook shows the name of folders in bold font when they contain new mail. Otherwise, the folder name is not in bold font.

Yes, it's possible. When creating a Rule, select "move a copy to the specified folder" the Select action(s) phase of the Rule setup.

Made the huge error of trying to improve the functionality of hotmail and so downloaded the #@[emailprotected]#%@ 2011 thing. Hideous.

The msn feature now has stupid quasi-news as a whole page and the tiniest bit of my contacts on the right, who are not even readable unless I scroll down to see who might be online. I also, hey what can I say?!, just want to see a list of all of my contacts whether they are online or not, LIKE MSN USED TO BE. At least you still get the little 'ding' and a box cropping up on the right-hand side if someone signs in.

Now, because I HATED this new nonsense, I deleted the msn feature from that #[emailprotected]% 2011 thing. I then tried to re-install it. The blasted thing claimed it did that but now I have no way to sign in to msn simply, see who might be online and get a notice when a message comes in or someone signs on.

I hate them.

AND, I am stupid enough to PAY for this pseudo-priviledge only because switching to another e-mail program (such as Gmail where I do have a secondary account) seems like too much hassle for all of the people who already know me here (I know that is easily remedied) and, especially, for all of the saved messages I have.

Here's an interesting problem. I've tried to download a dvd copier to my desktop (Gateway) but each program I've tried (Cheetah, Fly DVD Copier, Magic DVD Copier, One-Click) all have the same results. They will download fine, but will not open and often freeze the computer. Each time one has failed to work I delete it through Control Panel, and try ANOTHER. But the same results each time.

I thought this may indicate a conflict with one of my existing programs, But how do you find out which one? No error MESSAGES appear; programs just won't work.

Any IDEAS?

Since the programs seem to be DOWNLOADING and setup seems to work (they always go all the way through the setup process to 'finish') I believe the programs are downloading correctly. But they still will not open (work).

I'm using XP, if that matters. Also use Chrome for a browser.What,if any, media software programs DO you have CURRENTLY installed ? IE Nero,etc. truenorth

I am in college and have an economics project due in tomorrow. I was working on it today in college and emailed what i had done to myself using my gmail account so I could open it up on my own laptop when i got home to finish it. I opened the EMAIL downloaded the attached microsoft word file. I have just SPENT 4 hours finishing the project while intermittently HITTING the quick save icon. It did not ask me to save as into my documents and to be honest i didnt even think to do it.

As i congratulated myself on finishing the project while again hitting the quick save (not sure if this is what its called) I closed down word. When I went to email the document to myself again so I can print it out tomorrow in college and hand it up....it is not there. I have searched my computer to the best of my ability and i cannot see any sign of it ever being there.

I WOULD appreciate any help anyone could give me otherwise I have another very long 4 hours ahead of me (its now 23.22 and i want to go to BED!)

I am certainly not trying to download the material breach. Because it is not good behavior.
It is clear from your words. that download materials in this way (torrent ) can CAUSE security gaps.

I have an issue with Outlook 2003 Calendar that really has me stumped. Last night I shut the computer down - EVERYTHING was fine - today I have started it up gone to look at my calendar and for some strange reason the default calendar is blank. My OLD one is still there but it seems like Outlook has created another one for reasons that I cannot begin to FATHOM!!

Even if someone could tell me a way of CHANGING the default calendar back to my normal one, that would be fine - but ideally would like to know how to delete this duplicate (even though it doesn't call it a duplicate)
