Is it possible to have multiple screens?

I have Verizon FiOS and download email to our desktop which has XP and Outlook Express. I am planning to get a netbook with Win 7 Starter so I can do email and web surf in different rooms connecting to the Internet through our Verizon wireless router.

I realize that OE is not available on Win 7 so I will have to use ANOTHER email system or go directly to the Verizon web mail server. Question: Can I download email to two different computers using two different email sysytems? If I can, I assume that those two systems will be totally independent. Eg, if I use my netbook to read a NEW email and then go to my desktop, that same email will show in Outlook Express as unread. Is this correct? Thank-you.Quote

For the past TWO DAYS I've been getting a "New Program" notice on my PC whenever I click Start. I know it does this after an new program has been INSTALLED but I haven't installed or had anything updated for several weeks. I thought it might be a virus so a ran a scan but nothing came up. I CHECKED my list of installed programs in Control Panel but see nothing new. How can I find what program this notice is indicating? Hi, try to scan your PC using SUPERAntiSpyware (secondary anti-malware program). If nothing found, try to scan using Malwarebytes (tertiary anti-malware program). Again, if nothing found, no need to worry.

To find what program that the notice is indicating, try go to Start > All Programs > check all your programs there. I believe a new program has a different background COLOR, I'm not sure if it white or flesh. Just take a look.

I am not sure if MS EXCEL cell can handle such a request. I have a SPREADSHEET where cell F9 through Fnnn can start with the character string ny, ko, c2... For each cell Fnnn which starts with the string "ny...." "ko...." "c2....", i want to assign the NUMBER 1 to its adjacent cell Ennn else a blank value. You said that you want to test if the values in column F start with 2 characters, ny, ko or c2, so the MID(cell,1,2) function will PICK those characters up. I have a file stuck in my recycling bin. It won't restore and it won't delete. It says '0 BYTES' can be found. It's AFFECTING the whole of my laptop. I can't log onto my user profile, so files aren't easy to get to. I've tried deleting it from Safe Mode, it does the same thing. Can someone please help me? Whilst designing a card in publisher, I cut and pasted a whole heap of circles to create a BORDER. I did USE the keyboard as a shortcut ( IE. control c and v). When I GO to print preview, the circles have little v's next to them?? When in normal view they aren't there. Also they are coming out when I print the page. Any suggestions?just a guess, but maybe when pasting for some reason the v KEY was entered into a textbox next to the circles. if that is the case, you can probably just highlight it and press delete.

I've been having this issue for a while and after much searching I still have yet to find a SOLUTION. In many programs on my computer, such as AIM, that use Shockwave or Flash, the font is very small and IMPOSSIBLE to read. Also any games or applications on the Internet that use Shockwave have this problem. I've tried uninstalling and re-installing all of my Adobe programs but to no avail. Searching on the internet for solutions turned up fruitless as well; I have yet to find ANYONE else with this same problem. Any IDEAS as to what might be causing it?

tring to fix friends pc after their GRAND kids left lol. Their desktop has changed.
It use to be c:\jflober\desktop but now it say c:\user\jfloberg and most of the icons are missing from his desktop and have to use computer to open up pc list an pick desktop.
Befor when you hit computer and the list CAME up it WOULD show everything like normal now when you open it right under descktop jflober is listed where it never was befor.
Any idea how to get it back to showing the main desktop? tytheir os is vista. I know almost nothing about vista.

I've been lurking around the website for a while but never really had an issue worth creating a thread for. But there i am giving it my first try.

We got 10 COMPUTERS that have hyperterminal on it. We receive calls and information is displayed on the hyperterminal. For some reason, the information is immediately sent to the print queue and gets stuck there, causing the print queue to STOP printing anything else (obviously).

We had a workaround where we created a little dongle that we put on the parallel port so everything that is sent to the parallel port would "print to itself/nowhere".

We are now going to put in computers that doesn't have any parallel port so this workaround won't work anymore. Any IDEAS how to mimic this "print to itself" BEHAVIOR?

I've used Excel for years, but all of a sudden this month, the 'spreadsheet' part isn't connected to the background that has the ribbon and all the top data on it. Now when I adjust the size, I have to adjust BOTH items. This is so frustrating.
I've studied what I can, but can't figure out what I must have DONE or what happened.

[regaining space - attachment deleted by admin]If you look closely at the upper right corner of the sheet you have open, you'll see it has its own Minimize, Maximize/Restore Down, and Close buttons. You just need to maximize that sheet within Excel.

Likewise, you can maximize the whole Excel window by clicking the Maximize button in the upper right corner there. Hey, this is pretty noobish but-- I have a few different email addresses (gmail, hotmail, gmx) and I'd like to find SOMETHING that will DISPLAY mail from each one so I don't need to check them separately. I'm not even sure what this sort of thing is called but I'm pretty sure they're out there. I don't really care if it is downloadable software or something in the internet browser.

(I'm running Windows XP with Firefox 5)For that, you need to use an email client, meaning a separate software from your web browser. Just about any email client can handle multiple email accounts. Win XP users have Outlook Express. Windows Vista users have Windows Mail. No email client comes with Windows 7 but Windows Live Mail can be downloaded for free from Microsoft; it works with Win XP/Vista/7. Microsoft Office users can use the Outlook component of Office. ANOTHER good email client is Thunderbird, which comes from Mozilla, the makers of Firefox web browser. And, if you happen to be a user of the Opera browser, Opera has a a built-in email client called Opera Mail.

Since you're using Win XP, I suggest either Outlook Express or Thunderbird. You already have Outlook Express but Thunderbird is a very good alternative. I have an old, legal version (set of original 3 diskettes, purchased by me) of MathCad, which I would LIKE to install in a laptop (running the Vista OS). I copied the diskettes onto an USB drive, and from that onto the hard disk on the laptop. HOWEVER, when I run the setup program, it interrupts asking for the next diskette. How can I get around that?The trouble with some floppy disk install sets is that the install program may look on the disks to verify each disk volume name or serial NUMBER. Unless this changes, it will not believe you have changed the disk. I presume you have access to another PC which has a floppy drive. On this computer, using suitable software such as WinImage*, make a floppy image of each disk in turn. On the target machine install a "virtual floppy" image mounting program such as IMDisk** or Virtual Floppy Drive (VFD)***. Place the 3 floppy image files on a flash disk. Plug this into the target machine. Either copy the floppy images to a FOLDER on the target machine or leave them on the flash disk. Using VFD, mount the first floppy image as a virtual drive. I work as a network admin for a company that owns a lot of stores , well all the registers are running windows xp sp3 and the credit card services relie on DOT net 1.1 but yto remain pci compliant we need to have sp1 installed . Now here is where the trouble begains WILE installing sp1 it will get to 3 sec left and stop I have to cancle it adn gow in to the task manager to get it closed adn upon a reboot i get a error 2711 or 1603 I have been told to uninstall dot net and reinstall it so I tryed that and than dot net will not reinstall it goies to registering eneterprise services.dll and hangs .
I whent to microsofts HELP pages and knowklage base and they tell me to disable several services that will cause it rio hang problem is those servises are not installed .. As of yet no one seems to know how to fix this issue not even microsoft aperantly .

Thx, Matt.The problem with creating a rotatable image is that to look correct, all of the images should be TAKEN at precisely the same distance and angle as well as at a set number of degrees for each image to be take at (like ever 10 degrees for example). Otherwise, if the measurements are not all the same, the picture will look odd when rotated. That's why most professionally done 3D rotatable images are done with machines, strictly for precision.

You could, with care, use a turntable of some sort and a camera on a tripod. That should keep the distance and angle right. You would have to measure the angles and TURN the turntable precisely for each image before JOINING them together in the rotatable image. That's probably the best "poor man" method I can think of. Time consuming compared to using a machine though.

I am having troubles with placing a hyperlink in a document. Several hyperlinks in the same document FUNCTION perfectly. The one in trouble allows me to place and activate the hyperlink. It functions, as it should, numerous times, until I shut down the document. On REACTIVATING the document the hyperlink will not function and REQUIRES a COMPLETE re-do. Saving the document at each step has no effect. ANYBODY have an idea for me. Using WIN7 and MSWord 2007.

Is that hyperlink unusual in some way, maybe containing some characters not usually found in a URL? Is it an internal link (within Word) or a link to a website?

I have tried to INSTALL thunderbird from oldapps.com , EVERY time when my download is complete i try to open that thunderbird setup.exe file it shows an error that it is not a valid WIN32 application! why is that? i need to install ANOTHER software to setup these softwares what?Why did you go to oldapps.com to get it? I suggest you get it from http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/.I do not know why this member has gone the route they chose to obtain the "Thunderbird" browser. But usually the reason is to install an "older" version than the current (for whatever reason). If indeed that is the reason an alternative to the site they used here is one i have used for other older software versions i desired. I have never had any problems with it. My link is to the specific "Thunderbird" program but it provides 100's of OPTIONS for other programs as well.

Running Windows Vista Home on a Dell. Have Norton Security free with Comcast isp. It had a handy feature that stored login ID's and passwords and entered them when needed. Neat. Then they changed to a password-protected feature that isn't worth the time it takes to use, IMHO.
I didn't like Norton anyway because it used so much capacity and it ALWAYS doing something that slows the operation to the point of the computer being almost being useless for the first 90 mins every morning. So I DUMPED Norton and installed Avast. Much less intrusive now. BUT it doesn't have an id - password storage feature that I have been ABLE to find. So, is there a simple program availabe, free hopefully, that I can download to do this for me?

I have a dedicated SATA hard-drive from which I boot XP SP 3. I also have a SCSI striped array from which I boot Windows 7 Ultimate.
All the data on my SATA hard-drives was created under WINdows XP.

I find that copying data over a network between 2 Windows 7 PCs is substantially faster that between mixed operating systems.
I created an Administrator-level profile in both XP and Windows7 that I use to access the drives across the network. (ZNET)

My problem is that when I access an XP-created-drive from another networked Windows 7 PC while my PC is running WIndows7, I then find that when I re-boot my PC with Windows XP, CHKDSK AUTOMATICALLY runs on ALL my XP-created partitions and there has even been some data-loss!

I assume this is caused by ACL corruption.

I'm getting corrupted indexing files every time I DIRECTLY access files on my system.

I installed Windows 7 on a partition of a raid 0 with Windows XP on a second partition as a dual boot. The setup went fine and all of the drivers appear to be working fine. It SEEMS any time I access files via windows explorer, my computer, etc. the indexing of the files get corrupted. The system detects the corruption and upon reboot it cycles through the disk repair utilities and deletes several indexing files it says are corrupted and the cycle goes round and round. I disabled the file indexing on all of the partitions and the problem has gotten better but I still on occasion have to run scan disk and fix more indexing errors. Is anyone else having this problem? ...

Today I tried to open a project I was working on, and I was greeted by a little popup that asked me to set the text, language, and ALIGNMENT of the document. I clicked okay.
Then another BOX popped up and it said "document file is locked for editing by unknown user." open read only document or a copy for editing." both choices SENT me to my 137 page document, where every piece of text was replaced with pound signs. (###)

I have no idea what to do. Please, please help me out. This is so important.I have not seen this problem before but I will try to offer some suggestions.

Did you try clicking "Undo" after the "text, language, and alignment" popup?

I have a large picture approx 32 x 24 inches (can't recall EXACT measurements ) I want to make a smaller print of the "ENTIRE" image say an 11 x 14 or an 8 x 10... how can i do this in photoshop... when i go to do this 11 x 14 ... it cuts off a good portion of the image ... how can i get the entire image but a smaller VERSION.... thanks if anyone can help !! In the Print dialogue box, tick the "Scale to fit media" box. That should be all you need to do. Click Print.

Alternatively, load up Irfanview - Irfanview can easily resize to print, again via the print dialogue box.You can also use File>Save for Web & Devices and type in the SIZE you want on the bottom RIGHT of the dialog that pops up.

I have TWO rather weird errors in office 2002 (package including frontpage).

I've recently been unsuccesfull in downloading and installing MS office 2002 service pack 3 from windows update: it asks for my CD which I can't find. I THEREFORE click cancel and the installation fails. This problem might be RELATED to the two errors/bugs:

The first is in Outlook: it show me my e-mails in the inbox as blank lines. Clicking on a blank line opens an e-mail correctly.

The second is in Excel: when I start Excel, it starts "configuring microsoft excel office XP professional with frontpage" and then asks for a CD.

I've looked around but can't find any help online. Who knows what to do?

my computer has had a recent problem where it GETS to the loading screen right before the login screen and then suddenly shuts down

You will need to provide some information. Is it a very new computer? A LAPTOP? Did it come with Vista installed? Have you ever made the suggested Vista recovery disc on a CD?

The most common failure with laptops is often overheating and battery problems. But battery problems come after na year or so of use.

It is not hard to find a replacement drive for most computers. But first, let us think of other THINGS that might have gone wrong.

Do you have any reason to suspect a virus? Do you often go to unknown web sites? Do you have a good anti-virus program?

Try this. Disconnect any external devices from the USB ports. Turn on the computer and strike the F8 key until you see a menu for boot options. Boot into safe mode with VGA. Does that work?

I have a question about Iobit's New Malware Fighter Pro. I had their paid version Of Security 360 Pro, and after being told by Iobit they were no longer SUPPORTING that PROGRAM, I followed their directions and uninstalled Security 360 Pro, and installed Iobit Malware Fighter Pro. My license code was carried over to their new program and it successfully installed except for one function.

The program has an auto scan feature just as the previous program did. I had no problem in directing Iobit Security 360 Pro to scan daily at a time of my choice. The new program will allow me to put in that same information into auto scan every day at a certain time, but once the computer is shut down, it does not hold this prompt. The program continuously reverts back to wanting to perform a scan for only that day at a time of its choosing.

I have been in contact with their tech support. They keep asking me if I am correctly setting the program for a time of my choice, they review the directions how to do this, and what they offer is what I am already doing. I reached a point where I asked them if I should uninstall and reinstall a clean version. They told me to try that. After uninstalling, I reinstalled the program again from their direction to download it from C Net. It installed correctly, but I am having the same problem. The new program will not hold a prompt correctly applied for a day and time of my choice for an auto scan once the computer is shut down. Every other feature of this program works.

I notified their support of this again, asked if others were having the same problem with their new program, asked if this program is designed to work on XP Pro, 32 BIT systems, and did they have any other suggestions. They have not replied.

Is anyone else having this problem with Iobit Malware Fighter Pro and is there a FIX or something I can check into for this. Do they have something wrong with their new program that they need to fix? Iobit Security 360 Pro never had this problem on my computer.

I wanted to finalize this question. Iobit finally did get back to me and said they had updated their program and that this would correct the problem with auto scans. I downloaded their updated version and the program is working fine now.

I am running 2 laptops at present; (1) a Panasonic with XP and (2) an Acer with Windows 7. I can run applications like Metatrader and skype on my Panasonic no problem, but recently, I can't seem to load any of my browsers (I have Firefox & Explorer). They simply will not load. The "egg timer" on the cursor comes on but it simply will not load the browser at anymore.

In addition, my Acer's performance has been terrible lately. Is that correct (because you don't mention the effect on the browsers)? I also believe you found that even after the reintroduction of the firewall and the AV the 2 computers (after an initial problem with the XP machine) they are both now operating as you would want. Is that also correct? You MIGHT want to try operating with your AV only and no firewall to see the effect of that. My belief was and the reason i had you try the test was that perhaps your AV and/or your firewall was performing their functions to the point that you could not access the browsers as they were not completing their scans. If you do get the problem back you may wish to try a different AV. You may know that there are others (free) that are known to be quite effective.truenorth

For some reason many programs like Firefox, Chrome, STEAM just refuse to open on my COMPUTER. If I CLICK on them and nothing happens. I even found them in their containing folders and clicked "open" but still nothing happened.

Only a few programs like Microsoft Word, AIM, and IE will work.

The weird thing is that all programs work fine on another user on my computer. However, the programs will open fine with Safe Mode on my user.

BTW: I have Windows 7.

Does anyone know why this is happening and how I can fix it?

Using HP Pavillion computer with windows XP, Service Pack 3, Outlook 2002.
I have taken several pictures on my digtal camera and loaded them
to "my Pictures".
When I try to send them in an email the PICTURE turns to unreadable
jibberish that can't be read. I right click on the pic and choose "send to" and then the email comes up with the picture as an ATTACHMENT. Upon clicking on the attachment
I get a window that says "file conversion" and to select the text. The text has already been selected as Windows default and the unformatted jibberish is in the email. I have been able to send these same pics last year without any PROBLEMS.

RLSMy first guess is that your pictures are larger than you ISP allows. The fact that you used to be able to send them may mean that your ISP has changed the attachment file size allowed. You need to CONTACT your ISP to see what limitations they have on attachment file sizes.

Additionally, how big are these file sizes? Maybe you need to compress the pictures a little more.

I installed Silverlight Beta for Facebook for WINDOWS. There are several features that don't appear on it that the regular Facebook PAGE has. Hello all!

My laptop, a Toshiba Portégé M700 wont start up after hibernation. Whenever I close my lid to the laptop, it goes into hibernation and then when I open the lid, it goes to the page that says Restarting Computer and has the little time bar that finishes but after that, the screen just goes black and nothing happens. If I WANT to turn the computer on, I have to force quit the computer and then do a full restart and that takes ages to do.

I went to the IRC channel yesterday and Milkman helped me trying to fix it, but apparently the fix didnt work We tried to update my video CARD and we tried to give my laptop more space for the visual memory but that didnt work either.

Have your run scandisk/ chkdisk to check for corrupt entries in your HD? Have you also run system FILE checker to ensure that all of Windows file is intact?It started just a few months ago and I think it started after I did a disk defrag and used a registry CLEANER since my computer was really really slow. Ill do a scandisk now to see whats up1) NEVER use registry cleaners
2) NEVER listen to people in CHAT. What would your video card have to do with this problem??

I did undo the things the registry cleaner did since the program had a back up. I thought that might fix the problem but that didnt.

I think he thought the video card was faulty since I had a black screen.First, Hibernation has always been somewhat problematical. It works fine for some and causes headaches for others. But since it worked for your you prior to the registry CLEANING here's what I suggest.

1) Go into bios and make sure your optical drive is the first device in the boot order
2) Boot to the Recovery Console and run chkdsk /r (I don't know how you ran "scandisk", but this is the correct way to check and repair the HD).
3) Do a repair install. Boot to the XP CD and choose the SECOND repair option. XP will install on top of itself replacing all missing or changed system files.
4) After doing the repair install you'll need to go to Windows Update and download & install all updates.

Then let's see where we are with hibernate.

On a new install of Windows XP Home, I copied the program files folder for Yahoo! Messenger from the previous Windows, which came from the same CD. The program did not work this way, and downloading the install file gives me errors. The first error message I get from the Yahoo! installer is "Incorrect command line parameters". The title of the dialog box is Windows Installer. (I have not had any trouble installing any other programs). The installer, however, keeps working, and gets a second error message, which says in the dialog box,

Hi and hope someone can help. For a long time now when I boot up I was taken to the black screen where I'm asked where I want Widows to start ( start normally, last good configuration etc.etc.) This was happening approx 30% of the time. Now what's happening is every time I boot up it takes me to a different black page that defaults to; "Start Windows Media Edition" and then the screen with the Windows logo .There the blue bars run across the screen (as they should) but then stop, then the screen goes black and then the page with the logo is back and the blue bars run until completion. After all of this I finally get to my desktop. This latest scenario started after I added !GB of memory and at the same time I installed a new video card. ALSO recently I had "DragonMaster Jay" debug my PC. ALONG with this I'm now using PC Tools Firewall Plus instead of Windows firewall ,at his suggestion. In addition to the problems mentioned , once I do get to my desktop it now seems to take a lot longer to get going that before I added the additional memory? Also, for some reason I had to reinstall -- Roxio Creator 8 and --The Print Shop. But, I have not added any additional programs.
Anyway, any help with all of this would be greatly appreciated. Thks.

I'm not sure about the brand but I took my PC to a Computer (Dealer/Repair Shop). I showed him a print out of what was in my PC as FAR as memory goes , it's a print out from SIW. It listed 2 x 512MB DDR2 (PC-4300). He told me that actually what was in there was (DDR2 PC-4200) and that's exactly what he added 1GB (DDR2 PC-4200). Does 4200 vs 4300 make a difference?

Thks.PC2-4200 and PC2-4300 are the same. Just a difference in labeling.I usually try to keep my memory matched up with the same brand but the different brands really shouldn't make a difference.
Removing and installing memory isn't hard. Just make sure your computer is powered down and you touch the case before touching anything inside.
You could try removing the 2 512MB RAM or the 1GB that was added to see if it changes anything.Thanks for replying. What I'm going to do (perhaps as early as tomorrow) is have another 1GB of memory installed. The repair shop that I deal with would prefer that they do the install. Reason being that if it doesn't work properly I'm not out of pocket for the stick. Also there is no charge for the installation. What I'll have them do is; Install the new 1GB and remove the 2- 512MB temporarily to (as you said) see if it makes a difference.

Here is the specs for your board as far as memory goes. The memory should be unbuffered, non-ECC memory. Because this PC sometimes hiccups when booting up (and this has been going on for a long time) I don't expect that removing the 2 x 512's will change much. The tech. said (and I wasn't there) that he removed the 512MB's and didn't see the hiccup when he booted up after installing the 1GB. But, I don't think that he even knew what I was talking about. Anyway, beside that the PC is RUNNING well. 3GB is a whole bunch better that 2 x 512 MB. One of the changes that I was also wondering about at Start-up (and it's no problem just different) is put there (according to the tech.) after running Combofix. Anyway, if the hiccup causes me any additional concerns ,then I'll play with the memory.
Oh!! Yes. The tech. did a time check and tells me the time that it takes to get to desktop is just fine.

I bought Roxio Easy VHS to DVD software and capture device. The device works great with VirtualDub, but the software is foulded up. I use Vista Home Premium, 2 gig memory 150 gig free hard disk space, AMD Turion 64X2, nvidia graphics. I have cleaned registry, defragged, shut off AVG, Firewall and other programs, installed Roxio and when I click on the icon it begins to load then goes through an endless configuration, reboot cycle. IF the interface ever does show up, I click on capture video and get a runtime error. Does anyone know how to make this program work? No help so far from Sonic or Roxio forums or knowledge base. Dave Have not used Roxio products in quite a while (except for "Spin Doctor" from an old version 4). However if my RECOLLECTION is correct when i was using their products and they were still within the "free tech" support period they were quite good in providing tech support. If you have just recently purchased the product 1st go on line and register your product. Then use the telephone number provided in your manual (hopefully a toll free number) give them a call. Trying to do this via email messages can be very frustrating.
There are many ways to accomplish what you want but if you just bought this product and your system meets the requirements you have ever right to expect it to work for you. truenorthHi, thanks for the reply. Thanks, DNOn cleaning the registry, I merely went into regedit and deleted all the roxio or sonic items. I've done that many times in the past and it has not caused a problem. When I have done it in the past, programs that were not working well functioned ok when I reinstalled them after doing that. I also used regclean and ccleaner to get rid of issues. DNYeah, that's what I figured.

1) Regclean is known to CAUSE all sorts of problems
2) I don't care how many times you've done it, I guaranty you did not get rid of all entries created during the software install. That's what ADD/REMOVE is for.

I didn't do the regedit until I had uninstalled the program, but there were some registry entries related to roxio and sonic left over. Other things I did included defrag, shut down firewall and antivirus, close out the startup programs in msconfig, and then reinstalled. Nothing I try seems to make it work. I could, of course, reformat, reinstall the other programs I use and see if that works, but I read one fellow's comment that he had done that and it didn't help, either. I'm getting pretty fed up with roxio; found a good FREEBIE today that works: Captureflux; it's free and works okay, as does VirtualDub. Thanks for all the input. Other than the old version of "spin doctor"which i continue to use for vinyl/cd transfers i no LONGER use any of the Roxio products.
