Is there a way to get a piece of software off my computer if it does not have an UNINSTALL option & it does not appear in the add/remove programs LIST?

Solve : Windows Media Player Not Installed Properly?

Answer»

I had to rollback my WMP 11 to WMP 9 to correct a problem I was having with it rearranging my music library awhile back. So now I'm trying to reinstall WMP 11 since it is the version I PREFER. The installation goes fine and doesn't appear to have any problems. However I keep getting an error message when I try to open the program that says:

"Windows Media Player is not installed properly and must be REINSTALLED. Do you want to install the Player from the Microsoft Web site? Yes/No."

-Choosing "yes" takes you back through the installation process and doesn't remove the error.
-Choosing no...well does nothing.

So I tried to reinstall it by rolling it back to WMP 9 again, and doing a fresh install of WMP 11. It also RESULTS in the error message reappearing.

Does anyone know of a solution?

[System Specs]
Model: Gateway E4300
OS: Microsoft Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) SP3
RAM: 3GB
Hard Drives: C:/ - 74.5GB, E:/ - 465GB
Video: NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT
Anitvirus: AVG Free v8.5
I just thought of something...
each time the program starts to do this is after an AUTOMATIC update.
Perhaps something in that update causes the error.Wow, this is more like a self-help forum than anything else...

Alright, so I have determined that it is in fact an update that is causing the problem. I have set my automatic updates to notify me before downloading and installing. Now I intend to rollback to 9 once again, reinstall 11, and when the update comes up again I should be able to get at least a NAME for my problem.

Solve : WinHex - Cluster analysis?

Answer»

Does ANYONE here know MUCH about WinHex?

i was wondering how to analyse individual clusters? more specifically the CLUSTER slack space. i was thinking on a cluster by cluster basis, rather than gathering slack space of an ENTIRE drive.

Thanks** FIXED **

i managed to view the cluster tip by enabling "Open and search files incl. slack" option in the "Directory browser options" window.

on the pane to the right it shows the cluster size and the data file size,

you can deduce where the slack starts by counting the file size (in bytes) form the start of the cluster, anything outside the space allocated to the file is the slack.

Thanks.I wish I knew what this all meant... http://www.explorerplusplus.com/blog/54-file-slack

there is some links at the bottom, winhex is a free tool that you can UTILIZE to view clusters and a ton of other forensic functions.

Solve : outlook express 6 (with pop3) duplicate messages?

Answer»

All of my inbound messages get duplicated and, not knowing what was at the origin of the malfunction, I don't know what to do about it. One thing I tried, to no avail, is delete the pop3uidl.dbx file. So, what should I try? How do I search for clues? So, you deleted the pop3uidl.dbx file but that did not solve the problem, right? I SUSPECT your computer is not retrieving all messages when you try to retrieve mail. Do you hear the audible tone you should hear when OE has completed DOWNLOADING of all messages? Or, does it seem to stop before all messages are downloaded?

Can you access your email via a webmail interface, i.e. using your web browser? Who is your ISP, with whom I presume you have this email account? Was away a few days. Thanks soybean for your interest. What I finally did is use my various cleaning utilities: Ad Aware, Spybot S&D, Win OPTIMIZER, chkdsk, CLEAN up and, to my surprise, one of them must have done the trick because this early afternoon I checked my mail and it CAME in singly, no more duplicated. I suspect that my registry had been tampered with. I hope I can say goodbye...

Did you try reinstalling the PROGRAM?

Try the latest version, Windows Live Mail. You can get it by following that link. Thanks for your response but LOOKING at the link you sent doesn't this refer to Hotmail and not Windows mail?
grandadOh, sorry about that. Try here: http://download.live.com/wlmailDo I have to uninstall Windows mail before downloading and if so how do I do it because I cant find it in my list of programs. No, you shouldn't have to uninstall. It's really just an update process, rather than NEW installation. As soon as I ran the link you PROVIDED the computer crashed so that wasn't the answer.

Solve : Safe removal of OE6?

Answer»

I had a question in another thread regarding OE6 which no one seems to be able to answer so l thought l'd try a different solution.
There are no files that l wish to save, any relevant ones l have printed off. How do l remove OE6 successfully as it doesn't appear in the add/remove programs.
Having looked around, it seems to place files and keys all over the place. I did find some instructions about having to delete the following keys first
though:-
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WAB
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\WAB
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \Software\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{44BBA840-CC51-11CF-AAFA-00AA00B6015C}
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \Software\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{7790769C-0471-11D2-AF11-00C04FA35D02}
What else should be deleted, and where do l look.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Open Add/Remove Programs and click Add/Remove Windows Components on the left. You can uncheck it here, but you can't actually fully remove it.You can't remove OE6. It's part of IE6. Internet Explorer can not be uninstalled.Thank you both.
If it can't be "removed" can l reload OE6 and overwrite all the existing files.
(this is basically what l want to do)
RegardsOE6 is a part of IE6. It can't be downloaded separately.
Are you using IE6?
What's the problem, to start with?Hi Broni.
I've been using OE6 under IE8 with no problems at all until l changed service providers. OE6 won't let me add or delete accounts and is STILL stuck with my old ISP.
Because this started as an internet problem, my original post is in the internet/networking - networking forum, about the fourth one down.
As ther seemed to be no answer, l thought it easier just to get rid of and reinstall (obviously not!).
Perhaps you would be kind enough to have a shift at that thread.
You may know the answer?
Thanks Outlook Express was bundled with IE6. With the introduction of IE7, it was replaced by Windows Mail, and later with Windows Live Mail.Hi Broni, thanks for sticking with this.
Sorry to seem like an absolute dope here, but l've been using OE6 with IE8 all this time with no problems at all, until now that is (it's what l've been used to so l suppose it's my comfort zone).
Should l therefore install this Windows Live Mail, and does it do the same as OE (ie download emails from my new ISP via pop3).
Another question that arises is that when l select the read mail (envelope) icon on the IE8 toolbar, where will that take me (OE6 or Livemail)?
Thanks very muchI'm just very theoretical here, since I don't use OE, or Windows Mail, and barely IE. On a top of it, I'm on Vista here, but I'll try....
You can either install Windows Live Mail, or go for some other email client, like Thunderbird, which I use.
Whatever you'll decide, open IE8, go Tools>Internet options.
Under "Internet programs", click on "Set programs" button, and it'll let you select your default email program.Quote from: Broni on July 18, 2009, 05:02:36 PM

Outlook Express was bundled with IE6. With the introduction of IE7, it was replaced by Windows Mail, and later with Windows Live Mail.
Actually, Windows XP USERS who upgraded IE, starting from version 6 to 7, and the same from version 7 to version 8, still have OE 6. IOW, OE was not replaced by Windows Mail in Windows XP systems; Windows Mail replace OE in Windows Vista systems.

I think I'd give Windows Live Mail a try or, as Broni suggested, get Thunderbird. Thanks soybean for all CORRECTIONS. As I said, I'm not very familiar with those programs. Thanks everyone.
Yes soy, that's what happened to me via the upgrade route and l was left with OE6.
Will give Livemail a try first as my OE6 is now totally screwed up, so nothing to lose.
RegardsHave just downloaded Thunderbird as Broni suggested and it's blimmin' brill. Looks and ACTS very similar to OE6. Don't know why l even bothered with OE (l can delete and instal TB over and over if l so wish as there are no links with IE. Hoorah!). Thanks Broni.
My userid is @free.fr so l have set it up as POP3, incoming mail as pop3.free.fr and outgoing as smtp.free.fr and all seems to work ok.
Should l be using imap INSTEAD? If so, would incoming be imap.free.fr and outgoing as mail.free.fr

Mod added. When l come out and go back into TB, some of the messages in the inbox have written over the top of other messages making them unreadable to the eye, but they do in fact still open. Any ideas? I'm glad, you liked TB

Solve : MS Outlook 2003 - Printing Emails?

Answer»

Thanks Rob and killerb255!

Both REPLIES sound very useful. I will take a shot at the profile & let you know the results.

Thanks again! I have followed the instructions left by Killerb255 and can report the following,

 • A new Outlook profile was created but the print problem still occurred
 • All MS updates were in place
 • Printer drivers uninstalled/reinstalled.
 • I tried logging ONTO a different XP Pro machine in the office using the roaming profile. Profile loaded fine and outlook printed correctly with a space between the subject line and main body text. I have tested the profile on a second machine and again prints correctly.

Is the User's profile corrupt even though it functions ok on other PC's?Probably part of the hive that doesn't roam is indeed corrupted. Suggest migrating over to a replacement profile. The only other thing I would suggest is trying the first half of #5 from my previous list:

Quote from: killerb255 on JULY 08, 2009, 01:18:03 PM
5) Try logging in as a different user. I'm not sure if your corporate environment is using roaming profiles, but if it is, then this could ELIMINATE a few things. Open up Outlook under the different user account and try PRINTING an e-mail. If the problem doesn't occur here, then the user's roaming profile might be corrupt. To confirm this, log onto another PC with the user's account that is having the problem, and try to print. If the problem exists, then yes, indeed, their profile is corrupt. Start rebuilding that profile!

You tried the second half of this (different PC, same user), but not the first (same PC, different user).

Solve : outlook 2003 not connecting to mail servers?

Answer»
Hello all and thanks in advance.
I built a new computer due to mobo FAILURE with all new parts except the tower. I havea fresh install of xp pro -sp3 and office 2003 -sp3 and all available updates installed. I had norton NIS 2009 installed but uninstalled it to verify it was not the problem. I am also using IE8. LINKSYS router.

Here is my problem: OUTLOOK 2003 cannot connect to mail servers. I have tried gmail and yahoo, using various smtp ports 25, 465, 587, and pop 995, 993. When I clck test settings it gives:
/-establish network connection completed
X-find outgoing mail server cancelled
X-find incoming mail server cancelled

With a send/Rx i get an error 0x8004210A pop timeout error. I can get into the email accounts through their webpages ok. I can ping the mail servers through a cmd box. My laptop on the same network connects fine through outlook express.

Everything was working before the other computer crashed. Is there a way to check and see if outlook is being blocked by SOMETHING?

Again thanks.
It wasn't any of my settings or firewalls. It all had to do with slipstreaming xp3 into my setup disc and removing outlook express. After installing OE, it all works EXACTLY as it should without any other setup or changes.

Thank you and good night.
Strange....

Solve : Which of the following preloaded software crap can I remove from my new laptop??

Answer»

I included a screen shot of my programs that are on my new laptop.

I just bought a laptop and you know it comes with a lot of preloaded crap.

I just want to know what I can remove and what I cannot remove safely.

I havent added anything of mine on the computer so I want to be able to remove everything that I can without hurting the laptop.

Thank you!

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff74/seoaxen/hpsoftware.jpgCan you do this, instead? It'll be easier to READ, copy, and PASTE...

Download HijackThis:
http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthis/download
by CLICKING on Download HijackThis Installer
Install, and run it.

Click Config... button.
Click Misc Tools button.
Click Open Uninstall Manager... button.
Click Save list... button.
Click Save.
The list will be saved as uninstall_list.txt in C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis folder.
At the same time, Notepad will open with the list displayed.
Select all text, copy, and paste in your next reply.Ones I see, based on a brief look at the list:

 • Norton Internet Security, unless you plan on using it, which i WOULD not.
 • My HP Games, if not using.
 • Microsoft Office Home and Stiudent 2007, if it's a temporary version which requires payment for a full license and you do not intend to get the full license and continue using it.
 • Sling Player - I'm not familiar with it. will you be using? if not, remove it.
 • HP stuff - it all warrants a review; it you think you have no need for it, then remove it. I would not remove HP Quick Launch BUTTONS, and HP Wireless Assistant.
A couple of programs that you could get rid of are Adobe Air and Adobe Reader 9. You should keep Adobe Flash Player though. This will free up over 200mb of disk space.
You will however need a substitute for Adobe Reader, and Foxit Reader does the trick. can be downloaded from -

Solve : Copying OS harddrive - software?

Answer»

Hi,

I WANT to upsize my OS hard drive. What is good brand of software to copy everything from the small drive to a larger one?The MAJOR HDD manuf. all have FREE software to "clone" your old drive to the new one...
The procedure is simple
Hook up the new drive as slave
DLoad the software from the manuf. site and create a bootable cd.
Boot to the CD and select the Clone operation.
Let it run completely...this is IMPORTANT.

When FINISHED remove the original HDD and hook up the new one as master.
After you have VERIFIED everything is working you can then add the old drive as slave; FORMAT it and use it for additional storage...

Solve : Houghton Mifflin's eReference in Vista?

Answer»

I need some advice from SOMEONE who has gotten Hughton Mifflin's eReference program to work it Vista. They are not yet supporting the program in a Vista environment but they report that it works for some users.
It installed OK for me and word look up works. The audio pronunciation of a word fails with error "eRef 41 Run-time error 7 Out of Memory". I did try increasing the virtual memory, that did not help. If you have had success with this program in Vista please advise me
Thanks
Frank CHave you tried running it in Compatibility Mode?

Are you using 32-bit or 64-bit Vista?Thank you for the reply.
Yes, I did try compatibility mode. I used Win XP sp2 It did not work.
I previously had the subject program operating on a Win XP sp2 machine.
I no longer have that computer.
My Vista is Ultimate 64 bit.64Bit is probably the barrier...Sorry for the late reply...

64-bit is most likely the issue...

If there are any 16-bit components in the program, then it'll choke.

If there are any 32-bit DRIVERS in the program, it'll choke.

I'm going to take a guess and say that the program's audio feature uses some type of 32-bit device driver.

Although 64-bit Vista can run 32-bit apps, it can't run 32-bit drivers.

The other guess I would have is that the program may not like file paths with parentheses ( ) in them. By default, 32-bit programs install in C:\Program Files (x86).

Try this:

1) Uninstall the program.
2) When asked to choose where you want the program to install, change the part "Program Files (x86)" to "PROGRA~2" (that's the DOS 8.3 version of Program Files (x86)).
Thanks for the reply,
I don't see the folder PROGRA~2 on my system. I did a "C" disk search. Do I need to create it?
Thanks
Frank CI think you misunderstood me.

There is no such THING as a "Progra~2" folder.

Once upon a time, before Microsoft Windows, there was an operating system called MS-DOS.

All you could do was type commands. There was no mouse, no color, no pretty pictures, no nothing.

MS-DOS also had the limitation that every file and folder could only have up to 8 characters and the file extension could only be up to 3 characters. No spaces or special characters were allowed either.

In other words:

winword.exe would be valid in DOS.

some really big torrent file name.torrent would NOT be (too many letters, spaces, and the file extension is more than 8 characters).

...then came Windows 95, which began allowing longer file names.

Since DOS couldn't understand the longer file names in Windows 95, abbreviations were created.

So something like Huge Effing File Name.txt in Windows would be Hugeef~1.txt. There is no actual Hugeef~1.txt file. It's just that DOS is stupid and can't understand file names longer than that.

Same with "Program Files" and "Program Files (x86)." DOS sees those as "Progra~1" and "Progra~2" respectively.

The reason I mentioned this is because the program you're working with sounds pretty old, has no clue what to do with a file or folder name that has parentheses, and the DOS 8.3 (8.3 meaning 8 characters.3 letters) format might be a way to work around the program's stupidity.

So no, you will not see a Progra~2 directory. You'll have to type that in yourself.Sounds to me, like this program was written in a earlier version of Visual Basic (VB1,2,3, or 4 16-bit). I gather this from the Run-time error code #7. It boggles me why they wouldn't simply recompile with a 32-bit version; unless they are using a number of VBX controls...

In either case, allow me to add to killerb255's post regarding long filenames.

As he said, DOS only supported 8.3 filenames, -well, technically, the filenames could be any length, but had to have a "\" at LEAST every 8 characters (or more if an extension is used on a directory - but that is merely a optimistic way of perceiving the limitation.

With the introduction of windows95, MS slightly modified the FAT implementation; at the basic level- the filesystem still only supports 8.3 filenames. Windows 95 (and 98, and all later implementations while using a FAT filesystem) cleverly circumvents this by actually creating more directory entries that HOLD the files name.

So you ask, "why don't they show up in a DOS DIR?" well, when windows95 creates these directory entries, it sets some FUNKY set of flags, (I think it's Volume and system and hidden, which makes no sense). SO DOS just ignores them.

The original Files Entry is, Of course, the shortfilename itself, IE PROGRA~1 or ~2 or whatnot. Examining the disk structure reveals that there are probably 2 or three actual entries to store the entire "Program Files" string itself- Spaces are allowed in a fat filename, (the confusion about this detail results from the command prompt's, and DOS programs basic parsing of command-lines).

NTFS preserves the short file-names for these files as well; for the most part this is a backwards compatibility feature mainly intended for those scenarios where a NT server has a shared NTFS drive accessible from a DOS client. Short-name generation can be disabled, but this can cause issues with older applications.

with FAT32 MS extended filenames to be 255 characters in length. (if memory serves). It still needed to generate short-filenames for the same reasons as NTFS, with the addition that windows 95OSRB and 98 are far more likely to be used for running older applications that don't natively understand the new file name formats.

Even newer applications had issues with long filenames- programs merely RECOMPILED for the 32-bit environment were still using the same filename validation code as their 16-bit counterparts, resulting in a slew of programs that, although 32-bit applications, were no more "LFN aware" then their 16-bit brothers.

Quote

Same with "Program Files" and "Program Files (x86)." DOS sees those as "Progra~1" and "Progra~2" respectively.

I'd like to use this quote as an example of another lesson well learned with the introduction of windows 95 and the long filename system it provided; the generation of short-file names is not predictable machine to machine.

Many Word add-ons assumed that the Office folder was "C:\Progra~1\Micros~1\" the issues here are two-fold; if there was a existing folder called "Progra~1" on the disk, perhaps from a previous installation, then the current install, where Office would be installed, would be in "C:\Progra~2". This type of issue can cause numerous problems- the Add-in might appear to install successfully (but was in fact installing to the previous install folder, which it erroneously decided was appropriate). However, it would show no signs of existing, and perhaps may even make word unusable (Registry entries pointing to specific components in the old program files folder, for example.).

the second issue, of course, is with the Micros~1 folder spec itself. you simply cannot predict the order that the user will install programs. if they installed Microsoft Visual Studio first- then that would be Micros~1, not Office.

The issues at that point were resolved easily- "use the full folder name, you dorks" was the generally accepted solution.

In this case, however, I believe the Windows 64-bit setup process creates Program Files before Program files (x86) in practically all cases (with the very large exception of side by side installs with other windows operating systems on the same partition).

I have been encountering the same problem ("run-time error '7' pop-up, program crashes, etc.) when I click on an audio pronunciation.

I installed the program to the "Progra~2" directory (which apparently installs it in the hidden "program data" folder) and still the problem reoccurs. I've also tried playing around with the compatibility settings without any success, unfortunately.

I want to point out that the free-trial did not work for me either. For anyone interested in running the free trial, I have posted the link to the page on the company's website: http://www.houghtonmifflinbooks.com/eref/buy.jsp

I truly appreciate any help with this issueI forgot to mention that I'm running Vista Home Premium 32-bitQuote from: catracho44 on July 13, 2009, 07:36:19 AM
I forgot to mention that I'm running Vista Home Premium 32-bit

The "Progra~2" suggestion doesn't apply to you, since Vista 32-bit does not have a "Program Files (x86)" folder.Well that's part of the dilemna here...it's been stated she was running Vista x64 and now it says 32 bit...

Solve : Uninstalling Issue?

Answer»

Hi everyone,

I have a query about some files in C:\Programdata, basically about a year ago I had a game on my Laptop (Toshiba Satellite) which I'd thought I had unistalled properly however it doesn't seem to have fully uninstalled.

It is still appearing in Add/Remove Programs, but when I try to remove it I get an error message. When it does this I've noticed that it tries to reinstall the program rather than uninstall. The program is no longer in C:\Program Files, the only trace left that I can find of it is under C:\ProgramData. I have tried to delete these files (I know you aren't meant to delete these HIDDEN files but since the program is meant to be removed already I don't see why it would CAUSE any issues), however Windows Vista wouldn't let me as it said it couldn't locate the files.

This is exactly where the folders/files I'm trying to delete are:

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Playonline

They are folders and Shortcuts, which of course I can only bring up in search. I think they are the reason why Windows believes the program is still installed and wondering how I might be able to get rid of them?

At the moment I can't reinstall the game by DISK as it THINKS the game is still installed.

Thank you!

Solve : maximum storage capacity of a inbox in outlook express 6?

Hai Friends,

I want to know what is the maximum storage capacity of a inbox in outlook EXPRESS 6. And if the inbox gets filled with mail how to store the new mails which are yet to download the mails from the server to the inbox without deleting the old mails. Please help me in this issue.

Regards

Gayan WickramarathneAs far as I know, Outlook mail storage is limited only by hard drive space.

You can export old mail messages into a Personal Folder File (File -> Export). You can then save this file onto a CD or DVD for storage. You can browse the Personal Folder File by choosing open from the file menu and opening the backup file you created. After the backup is created, you can delete the old mails freeing up hard drive space.quaxo, your comments pertain to Outlook, not Outlook Express.

Per this reference, "The maximum file size of the .dbx files that are used by Outlook Express is 2 gigabytes (GB)."

Easy. Just move messages out of your Inbox into other folders. I have over 200 folders in OE and make HEAVY use of Message RULES to automatically send mail from certain senders into specific folders. That really helps in preventing massive clutter in the Inbox.Ah yeah, my mistake. The Max. Storage Capacity if *.dbx (Inbox) is 2GB. If exceeded teh limit, inbox will not display any messages. but if u notice the DBX file size, that will be showing morethan 2GB.Eh, this is a YEAR and a half old....So am I ....

Usually my procedure for uninstalling a program goes like this: I run Your Uninstaller Pro, which, when set on moderate cleaning will get rid of quite a few leftover registry entries and some system files. It usually will not get program file folders and such, but they're easy to delete.

After that I go into to regedit in Vista and do a text search for remnants of the program I just uninstalled. I usually find plenty that I can delete. I do not touch the binary information that COMES up after I do a search because I don't know what all the numbers mean or if I should delete them or not.

Also I have two other registry edit utilities that I run, that scan a little deeper than regedit. I delete what I can from them also. So after all of that I am usually content that I got rid of most of the leftovers from any given program that was uninstalled, however deep inside, I still wish there was a better way to go about it all.

Enter the program Total Uninstaller. I bumped into it on the web and immediately bought it. I liked the way it described the method it USED to get as clean an uninstall as possible. The way it works is, when you want to install a program, you install it under "monitored installations. It first takes a snapshot of your registry and system files, then you install your program, then it takes a final snapshot.

That, in theory, is supposed to result in a more thorough and cleaner uninstall, leaving fewer remnants in the registry than other uninstall programs. So lately I've been busy installing programs left and right because I just reformatted, however the other day I uninstalled my first program using Total Uninstaller and I was confident it would do a very thorough job

However after the uninstall, I was curious as to how efficient the program was, so I ran one of my registry edit utilities and up came about 40 to 50 entries related to the program I just uninstalled. Boy was I surprised. And a little angry.

I immediately contacted Gavrila Martau., the developer behind Total Uninstaller. I asked him why, when his web page MAKES claims of a complete uninstall, I still find remnants in the registry. His reply was "By default, Total Uninstall doesn't scan some of the registry locations that are not important. It is about "Most recent used" lists that are handled by Windows. In these keys the registry values are replaced by others as you use another programs (older entries are replaced by new items). So even if these entries are deleted will be soon populated by Windows with entries of other programs"

You can tell his English is not that great, but I still was not satisfied with his answer, so I wrote him back. But before I did, I opened up his options menu and looked for Scanning Profile Options (see attached screenshot). I saw "File EXTENSIONS with version information" with a white box under it and a box that says "Add". That looked like a place where you could add types of file extensions in order to make for a more thorough snapshot, thereby resulting in a cleaner uninstall.

The current extensions that were in there were .dll, exe and .ocx. So I asked him what other extensions could I add? His answer was "As long as the file version is not part of the system snapshot the list is not used. The version information take a lot of time if you activate it in the scanning profile " I didn't totally understand the answer, so I moved on.

I then asked him about "Monitored Applications, Scanning Profiles, Default and Registry". (see screenshot) There is an"add" button and I noticed that in the box are currently only three, I think you call them "hives". Excluded are HKEY_Users and HKEY_Current_Config. I asked him could I add those to make for a more thorough scan, monitored snapshot, install, snapshot, then uninstall?

His reply " Yes, you can add them. But you should know that HKEY_Users include HKEY_CURRENT_USER and the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE include HKEY_Current_Config.

I went on a little further about getting Total Uninstaller to run to it's optimum potential, but I didn't understand a whole lot more of what he was talking about. I did ask him one more question related to MRU registry entries that are leftover after an uninstall and he just said "These registry entries doesn't accumulate but are recycled."

But I think he is not telling the truth here. During my post-uninstall scan, the entries that I found were not MRU entries. I don't know what they were but they were definitely not MRU entries.

Finally I just asked him if I should just not worry about tweaking Total Uninstaller and he said "Just use Total Uninstall and a non aggresive cleaner like CCleaner"

So that's where I stand. While I don't think I was totally taken, I did buy a program that does not do everything it says. And I should have tried out the trial version first and given it a test drive before I bought it. So that's why I am so interested in seeing if I can tweak the program a little more to be more aggressive, but from what everything the developer tried to say, the program is already as tweaked as it can be.

That's where I need your expert advice. It still seems to me that more could be done to it, but the developer is hard to understand and doesn't explain things that well, so I really don't know how. All I know is that I'm still frustrated that all of these uninstaller program still leave MANY many remnants. Remnants of which I still have to go into the registry and delete manually.

By the way, if you wanted to you could download the trial program and follow me along to see if what I've said is true and tell me if the program's functionality can be improved
upon through the options menu. The URL is: http://www.martau.com/

I look forward to hearing your suggestions
Jan LaFata

[recovering disk space -- attachment deleted by admin]Not trying to add to your frustration...and I know you're looking for a tweak(s) to this new program you just tried.

No registry cleaner is going to perform at 100% no matter what you do.

He was correct in recommending CCleaner along with the application, however...even with CCleaner and the application itself...you may still find yourself entering the registry to manually delete entries that were not removed by either program.

Wish I could help more, but to be quite honest...I'm almost positive that even after using both of those programs, there's really no need to take it any further...based on the number of entries that may/may not be left over after uninstall/cleanup.

Best of luck to you...I'm sure there will be more replies.

Solve : Web Content Viewing Problem?

Answer»

Well, perhaps you should direct him to this forum discussion. You have plenty of confirmation here that that Best BUY web page does not work right on MANY computers.

My old COMPUTER running Win 98SE and IE 6, that I previously mentioned, does not have AV up to date and spyware scanner, and Win 98SE is no longer supported by Microsoft, so forget the updates. If we CONSIDER, that BestBuy's GeekSquad is a piece of CRAP, maybe they only accept unprotected, infected computer on their site

Solve : Retrieving Outlook files?

Answer»

My computer just crashed with all my names, adresses, phone NUMBERS and much more. I have installed Outlook 2002 but cannot link my Outlook data files created in Outlook 2000 (which I no longer have) into Outlook 2002. I know the data is sitting in my retrieved files somewhere. Any ideas please? What did you do when your computer "crashed"? How did you recover and get your system working again?

Have you searched your hard drive for a .pst FILE? It got a virus so my sons helped by installing a new hard drive, new virus software, new windows, new outlook, new MS Office etc, so the new HDD was virus free. We do not want to search the old hard drive where all the program files are for fear of picking up the virus. My documents were in a seperate HDD and therefore retreived to add in to the new HDD. I have everything installed now but as the Outlook I have is version 2002 and the old one I used to create the files was probably 2000 they seem to be incompatible.
Yes we searched for a .pst file but this is where everything went weird. I think it found some .pst files but when we tried the next step it said it couldn't find them. When we tried something else it said " no I can't do that as you already have them". If you can take me through the .pst process from the beginning I can tell you what happens when we do this. My boys are now gone so I will need step by step instructions I'm afraid. I will be eternally grateful if you can help , thanks. What Antivirus do you have?Norton 360

So basically you don't have any good protection at all. (according to my experience and our Malware Specialists opinion).

If you want, you can keep Norton 360 but there are other better free alternatives.

Have you tried PERFORMING a scan on the other hard drive yet?Quote from: aangie on September 08, 2008, 03:38:44 AM

Yes we searched for a .pst file .... I think it found some .pst files but when we tried the next step it said it couldn't find them.
Where did find them, on the old HDD, the new one, or both? What is this "next step" you're talking about?Sorry I'm a beginner and don't know how or where they found the .pst files. Would you be able to tell me how to find them again, step by step?
Then if it doesn't work I can see for myself where it went wrong and then ask you again what I might do next? In Windows XP, right click on Start and SELECT Search. Click the drop down arrow for the "Look in" box and select Browse. Select My Computer and proceed with the search.

Do you find .pst files in multiple locations? Where are they? Thanks. I have found Outlook.pst in C drive, thats the new one. I moved all the document files from the old drive onto C so that seems OK so far.
How do I put them in the Oulook programme please? Sorry to be so thick! So, you found the new .pst. What about the old one?

See http://www.howto-outlook.com/howto/backupandrestore.htm#Import_pst-file and follow the procedure for Restore through the Import and Export Wizard.

Solve : Outlook lost reply and forward buttons?

In Outlook 2003 for a message display there are no Reply or Forward buttons.

How can I get these buttons? There are a lot of problems with this. They seem to just disappear.

You should find SOMETHING here:

Solve : Robocopy /mon & /mot switch help needed?

Answer»

Migrating a file SHARE SERVER and using robocopy to do so. All testing has been successfully so far, however....

I'm trying to implement the /mov /mot switches.

when I include them into my cmd, all that happens is the directory of the source is copied, no files. Robocoby doesn't even re-run the cmd when changes are made to the source or after the "x" amount of time given in the /MOT switch.

Here is the command that copies everything as I would like:

"robocopy /E /CopyAll /R:5 /W:30 /ETA"

The above command works FINE, however the below command with the /mov /mot switch implemented fails to copy any files (only the directory) and does not re-run (monitor changes)

"robocopy /E /CopyAll /MON: 1 /MOT: 1 /R:5 /W:30 /ETA"

Any HELP would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks,

Solve : Find keyword and Write entire line to File appending?

Anyone know of any SOFTWARE out there that you can search for a keyword in a file and it saves all LINES to another file in which that keyword MATCH was LOCATED on, such as a large text document, and you want to end up with an output file that lists all lines in that document that had that keyword match located in it?

I am guessing I might have to write my own code to do this, but instead of reinventing the wheel, I figured I'd ask FIRST and maybe save myself some time.grep works in exactly this fashion.

Be very careful.

A Software Test Technician is a legitimate hob title. However, CERTIFICATION or training for this job is not, at the present time, well defined.

Some new companies have just come on-line. This seems rather odd. Software testing has been around a long time. So one would ask, why are new companies just now offering courses?

So if anyone has more ideas I welcome the choices, If this win 7 is legit I just dont get why I can't use it. Solve : SKYPE MALFUNCTIONING?

Answer»

I am using an Acer Aspire Timeline X (1830T-3425 model) laptop. It has Windows 7, 64 BIT. I have been using skype for a long time but it doesn't want to function properly. Most of the time when I try to open the program, one of two things tends to happen. (1) It seems to get stuck on the sign in part and never signs in. (2) It SAYS that the program is already running on the system. If #2 happens, I use ctrl-alt-delete and shut down skype (as I always find it running but can't access or use it (and it's not on my taskbar where it should be). Other times, when I try to access skype, it leads me to a driver folder in my PC.

On the other hand, it works fine sometimes. I have tried uninstalling and re-installing it a few times with no success. Any suggestions?I just recently started using Skype and have not used it much YET, so I don't know whether I can help you. I suggest you try the Skype community at HTTP://forum.skype.com/

Solve : Webcam Backdrop/Background Software?

Answer»

I need your advice, please, software pros!

I am looking for a professional software which, when the webcam is turned on, would prevent the background behind me and to the left and right of me from being seen entirely. Specifically, I need such a program which would show my party from their side only my face, part of my torso, etc. surrounded by a plain blue wall. I will be using webcam for business-related communications and not for fun. I saw quite a few links to webcam backdrop freeware but all of it are for people who want to DECORATE their webcam when chatting for fun. I tried this product www.webaround.com but it does not help me MUCH because it doesn't cover space to the left and to the right of me. It ony covers what's GOING on behind me. But I wonder if there's some software that can be used to mask entire room which is around me. Please, help!
The program which I will be using with the webcam to communicate is called "Vidyo" or something like that. Thanks!FRANKLY, I SUSPECT you'll have to do what you don't want to do, which is to tidy-up the background in your workspace because I doubt you'll find software to do what you want. But, you might spend some time purusing http://www.vidyo.com/. Looks like they have a lot of info for users of their software.

Solve : Alternative to Google Desktop??

Answer»

I've been pretty happy with Google Desktop - pretty speedy results, and doesn't seem detrimental to "normal" performance.

But I've noticed that a recent update has taken away its ability to index an external drive (NOT Flash, a regular drive). I've totally uninstalled and reinstalled, I've added the drive, removed the drive, added the drive, rinsed, repeated.

I receive a "Unknown error accessing files during crawling" at best, when I get ANY type of response on the Preferences page.

I can't find a solution, so I'm thinking time to find an alternative. Also, I'm not digging that on WINDOWS 7, to RUN GD effectively, I need to turn off Windows indexing, which screws up my Outlook search (which is superior to GD, but only when searching Outlook).that depends on your OS vista and 7 have windows side baryou might also try some of these http://alternativeto.net/software/google-desktop/http://tech-informer.com/bye-bye-google-desktopit-was-fun-while-it-lasted-24/

The reason I've never used Google desktop search, personally, is that it doesn't index file names, only their content. Most of my searches comprise of trying to find a file or a specific set of files, or something. I don't generally need to search by content; and, EVEN if I did, Windows comes with that capability anyway.

Really, the only time I use a "search" would be in the windows 7 (and before that windows Vista) start MENU search bar. If I can't find it that way, I generally open the Search tool I wrote to find it. (which also presents the files in the way I prefer, unlike the search results in Windows Explorer)

Also: Windows Search can be told to index external drives; right-click the drive, choose properties, and check off "Allow files on this drive to have contents indexed in addition to file properties".

Err...Windows sidebar is unrelated to searching...See I do frequently need to search for content... I share lots of files and frequently need to "find that file that had that xxxx in it".

I find the Google Desktop to be sooooooooooooooooooooooo much faster than Windows Search, but will GIVE that a try. Also looking forward to that "alternativeto" website.

Will post results soon!

Answer»

I want to make some animations for my projects.

The animations i want to make is, a pc loading up, text SCROLLING and flashing and others.

Which software would you recommend.

I am running windows 7 64bitWhy not give US a little more information on what you want to accomplish, otherwise there is always Google.Toon Boom Studio is one of the best animation programs for internet users, and is well known for its depth and quality of their technical support. It’s a solid application that is made for animators, by animators. This makes it a perfect choice for creating your own original cartoons.

animations? Two things come to mind-GIF file animations and flash animations...yeah man, try Flash,
HTTP://www.adobe.com/products/flash.html

Solve : Windows Medai Player not plays DVD?

Answer»

This is on a Dell E1705 laptop with XP pro, SP-3, Dell OEM version.
Device manager says display driver is OK.
But WMP not PLAYS my DVD.

But VLC works fine.
Is there a reason for this? The WMP HELP is a lot of n nonsense.http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306318from the screenshot, you are obviously using 16 bit COLOR... try 32 bit. Plus, WMP suck in my opinion. I got nothing but bother from it. To be honest, i'd stick with VLC - much better.
And I concur with the last comment

from the screenshot, you are obviously using 16 bit color... try 32 bit.
(right-click desktop -> prop. -> display 32-bit) unless you just COMPRESSED the screen dump like that.
after that, you should be plain sailing.
even after getting that changed i bet WMP still doesnt play the DVD..
anyway, let me know how you get on.
lukeThe color and resolution do not help.
I will stick with VLC
Thanks.Quote from: TRANSFUSION on July 27, 2011, 02:15:10 AM

The screenshot say to try lowering your color quality settings. Changing from 16 bit to 32 bit would be raising it, not lowering it.

Solve : Graphics/ sound issue?

Answer»

Basic computer specs:
1) Windows 7 64-bit
2) 6-GB DDR2 RAM
3) ASUS P5N-D APCI motherboard
4) Intel Core 2 Quad CPU 2.833 GHZ Q9550
5) NVIDIA Geforce GTX 550 Ti

I recently upgraded to a new video card do to deal with some issues with the previous one. Since upgrading I have noticed a popping sound in my audio whenever running multiple graphics related programs (ie having a youtube video playing music while playing Starcraft 2). I have noticed that I can make the popping sound consistently if I mouse over any links and scroll pages up and down on top of opening up separate programs. I feel I should be honest and say that I have used "Drivermax" to update my drivers as it is difficult for me to find drivers for my system online. Drivermax installed these realtek high def audio drivers and it has error status in system info.

Also, I use a logitech wireless headset for all sound purposes. HOWEVER, if I plug headphones into the computer I no longer hear any popping with whatever I do.

Solutions: These are the steps I'm considering taking so solve this issue. I wanted to see if anyone else had any other suggestions before I take them:

1) Reinstall windows, I hate having to deal with itunes after this, but I see this as the only way to remove any driver errors that are conflicting with each other.
2) Check my RAM for errors. I ALREADY had one stick giving me errors so I wouldn't be surprised if others had broken.
3) buying a new headset since these ONES are pretty old anyway.

P.S. Does anyone know why I have 20 PCI standard RAM Controllers listed under system devices in device manager.

Thanks for the help
