Solve : Why is an assemblhy binding issues not allowing Connectify to run?? |
|
Answer» Thank you for taking the time to look at this. I am totally stumped. I seem to only have this issue when trying to use "Connectify". Connectify is a windows 7 only program that allows you to create a Wifi access point using software and Windows 7. That software is still a BETA.... Yes I know it is BETA but its vouched for by soooo many reputable places that its not really an issue I think. I did not know they had a forum though, thank you for that info.where do you see the forum link? Problem solved! WOOOOPEEE! Fix: I went into the ""Turn Windows Features on and Off" and enabled "Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5.1" and now Connectify works! Thank you soo much for GIVING me the .NET info to go on. I knew it had to be something I did in the "Turn Windows Features on and off" section. |

Solve : New PC Cleanup? |
|
Answer» Ok my mom has a new computer with Windows 7 on it and being new it has all the advertising on it and it runs slow, I am looking for a program that will clean this up for me, I found a program call PC Decradifier but I don't know anyone who has used it. Is this a good program to use or any SUGGESTIONS on adware removal? I'm sorry I forgot to list this information, what I actually see on the desktop is an Icon shortcut for Net Zero and Netflix Trial, I cannot find the programs in the Control Panel>Uninstall Programs or in my Start Menu>Programs so I don't know how to remove the whole file. Other than this I don't know what else maybe installed.I'm surprised Net Zero and Netflix Trial are the only extras you see on the desktop. They are probably nothing more than shortcuts to a website, and you can simply right click on them and delete them. However, since they have no affect on the computer's performance, deleting them will yield no change in that regard. As I previously stated, I'd go ahead and run PC Decrapifier. It will not remove anything without your permission, and it's helpful in identifying things that could be removed. See http://www.pcdecrapifier.com/howitworks and http://www.pcdecrapifier.com/removes for more info. After the computer has loaded windows and all the icons it works well, it just seems to me that from the time I turn on the computer until it actually brings up my desktop is WAY to long than most computers it took approximately 4 or five mins to completely get everything running. It is a Gateway NV52, has an AMD Athlon Dual Core proccessor and 4 gig RAM so I would think it would boot up faster than this, also my mom has installed programs on it such as The Print Shop 22, Quickens and 2 or 3 other programs. From start go to run>type in msconfig>click ok> click on start up and un check the the boxes that you dont need on start up.Quote from: xavier on February 12, 2010, 09:18:46 AM From start go to run>type in msconfig>click ok> click on start up and un check the the boxes that you dont need on start up.Do NOT do this. Msconfig is a diagnostic utility. Use a 3rd party utility such as the aforementioned Startup Control Panel to manage startup items. One program you may want to try is Ccleaner http://www.ccleaner.com/ it will clean up your PC and it also will Fix Registry errors which may slow it down. it has worked wonders for me. you can use it to delete programs but i dont recommend it. i would still use the control panel for that.Quote from: nitelife2989 on February 12, 2010, 10:55:41 AM One program you may want to try is Ccleaner http://www.ccleaner.com/ it will clean up your PC and it also will Fix Registry errors which may slow it down. it has worked wonders for me. you can use it to delete programs but i dont recommend it. i would still use the control panel for that.Sorry, but... 1) It does not "clean your pc". It deletes temp files you can delete on your own if you prefer 2) It does not fix registry errors. And the entries it deletes from the registry do not slow down anything A lot of people use it and it's a pretty harmless utility. Having said that, in my opinion it's also pretty useless. |

Solve : What Is "SPAM"? |
|
Answer» Hi Experts I Need Your Help Again When I first started using the computer, I was afraid it would blow up in my face. After using google for a while, I was able to connect with others who shared my fear and were also unable to accept evidence to the contrary. They're ticking time bombs! I keep mine outside right behind a dump truck full of dirt, so when the countdown begins, I'm ready to bury it. Quote I used to be a hardcore windows explorer user, but after doing finds with that goggle thing, I discovered a better web looker, called mozzarella foxfire. Quote I'm a 60-year old grandmother of 4, and I have a hectic schedule. between getting up at an ungodly hour, buying a single COFFEE at a coffee-shop and insisting on staying after it closes 8 hours later, and trying to get home in time to watch wheel of fortune and jeopardy, it's hard for me to keep track of where my glasses are. One day, I WOKE up an entire hour late. my entire schedule was skewed an entire hour. I ended up missing wheel-of-fortune. It bothered me for weeks. "what word combinations and vowels did people buy in the missed show?" I wondered, often aloud to my cat, who generally stared at me quizzically and sprayed the couch yet again. I talked to my friend Deloris and she said that I could watch the show I missed on-line. She didn't tell me what I needed, so I then TOOK nearly a week trying to setup my old selectric. I'm smart enough to know that a computer keyboard is more magical then then typewriters keys, but I couldn't find where I was supposed to plug it in. thankfully, Deloris' Son was able to set a new PC up for me, quite the Darling, I remember when I used to change his diapers, or perhaps I'm remembering my Son. Actually, I certainly hope I'm remembering my son. I cannot fathom why I would be changing some neighbor babies diaper. YES, I probably could have written the definition of spam for you, but that would be taking away your legwork.Isn't Spam just mystery meat in a can??Wanna know what Spam is? Refresh the page. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spam_(electronic)Thanks Spoiler No problem....anytime BTW what you were doing in chat is considered SPAM...although not the definitions given. |

Solve : "Computer Not Communicating"? |
|
Answer» Ah yes i do see my erroneous reference to the computer that the Dell tech was working on. I guess i automatically felt that the "Dell" tech would not do anything on an HP computer.I must confess that your last post i find very confusing. There is a point in it where i was certain the printer issue with the Dell laptop is solved. It does appear from your last post that a successfull install of the Dell 960 printer software has been accomplished on the Dell laptop. Is that so? And are we to understand that if that is so that you are still unable to use the Dell printer on the HP desktop only?Is that correct? My insistence on following the method of INSTALLING the printer as specified by the "manual" was because each printer can have certain aspects of the install of hardware/software that is specific to that printer (they do vary printer to printer as well as being different depending on the operating system on some printers). So while i was certainly aware of the efforts you had made to remove and reinstall i was not certain if you had followed the precise instructions of the manual which is usually critical to success. What is being requested of you when ""Please Select Network Printer You Want To Use" is because you are on a network and on that network there are more than one printer. So at that point a list of the available printers should be displayed or somewhere on the open printer window (this is fuzzy with me now) as as i told you i am using a hardware method for printer sharing (not a network) and it has been some time since i used the network method should be an option to display all the available printers on the network and then when you select the A960 then you will be able to use it. At this point the printer program needs to be directed to the printer you want to use. It will NOT print (the laptop) until that is satisfied.I have never tried to use 2 printers on a network with 2 computers. Most people would use one printer with 2 (or more) computers. It may be because of the fact that you are using 2 printers (and want to for whatever reason continue to do so) you may have to designate the specific printer of use each time you want to print. Although GIVEN that you CAN print from the HP printer on the Dell laptop which is physically connected to the desktop (and as well i assume from the HP desktop also). It seems that only when you want to use the Dell printer from the HP desktop that you GET the need to identify the printer. Is that right? As a matter of interest when you are using these 2 printers are they both turned on at the same time? If so what happens if you only turn on one printer at a time? If i am not mistaken we do have considerable progress here -- 2 printers--2 computers are now working--just not the way you want them to. If he fails I'll have no choice but to call in expensive microsoft certified techs. You know, for what it would cost to pay for Microsoft support, you could probably buy a new network-capable printer. I have a Brother AIO connected to my D-Link DI-524 router and can access from two desktop computers connected by cable to the router and from my laptop by wireless connection. I paid about $109 for the AIO, but I got it during an exceptionally good promotional offer from newegg.com. But, other models that normally sell for less than mine are also network-ready. truenorth, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, learn the concept of paragraphs. It would make your posts a lot easier to read. I'll do my best, Soybean. 1. Yes; simply put, COMPLETE interchangeability between both computers & both printers. 2. Both networkable (although neither printer is "wireless"). As said, worked heretofore flawlessly! 3. Hard to say which printer older; both old. But question repetitive: both networkable as per (2) above. 4. Currently no sharing/networking. Each prints on whatever printer cable connected to it. Now both printer cables are connected to HP desktop. So it prints from both. Laptop does not print from either unless/until cable connected to it. More briefly, there's no network. No reason to be content with half-a-loaf! Have Router, should have network; should have full capability. 5. Know what you mean! DellOnCall assures will reestablish network for $129. Microsoft "only" $70. Geeks a matter of time/distance and who-knows-what-cost. Another difficulty is some of the very competent MSN techs, and there's a whole slew of them, are expert in some areas, and useless in others -- and no way to know which even if they do "estimate". Two references I supplied are entirely different and far more reasonable. Cordially,OK, to reiterate, you could just connect one printer to each computer and leave it at that. Quote from: roduke 41 on February 12, 2010, 01:55:55 PM No reason to be content with half-a-loaf! Have Router, should have network; should have full capability.OK, it's your money. Edit: You might try http://en.community.dell.com/forums/3527.aspx and http://h30434.www3.hp.com/Thanks for references, Soybean.Truenorth, good references thank you. Made printout of CNet Asia; About.com I belong) will take more time; HowStuffWorks interesting; Without Router I passed on. Cordially, I don't believe this option has been mentioned: D-Link DP-300U Multi-Port Print Server RJ45 Two IEEE 1284 Parallel Ports USB 2.0 PortAgain thanks, Soybean. I'll hold on to existing WBR-1310 d-Link router! Cordially,UPDATE: After review of CNET ASIA referral re SHARING, on desktop found name "Printer 4". Knew this to be the Dell A960; changed name. Also checked re "Additional drivers", desktop being XP SP3 & laptop Vista SP2. Found list half-dozen items, one of which (an Intel) checked YES. Went to laptop SHARING; no "Add Printer" (as was on desktop); checked name, found Printer 4, but when Cancelled, checked again, up came the Dell A960. I had not intended to follow directions had "Add Printer" been there inasmuch as six printers already shown The Dell A960 & HP Deskjet 970CSe being each shown twice, it was safe assumption the ones with title RODELL41PC referred to desktop; ones without that to the laptop. BUT on the desktop there was only one entry for each printer, each without RODELL41PC in title. Total five printers if include "Add Printer". The "Additional Drivers" area was "blued out". NETWORK ACTIVE LAPTOP PRINTED ROUTINELY! (This despite both printer cables connected to desktop!) Here's the rub: Selecting HP Deskjet in place of the Dell A960: DID NOT PRINT. One further anomoly on desktop. Opening taskbar A960 icon in use, 0 documents. At Ctrl Panel PRINTERS, the other icon with abbreviated title showed 3. Accepted to Cancel 2, but not the 3rd. On desktop all five printers "0" & "Ready". |

Answer» I have this problem when i run microsoft word my computer will not respond and i have to end task the program. My computer will eventually HEAT up until i end task word. I scanned my computer with numerous av program and other programs for TROJANS etc. I also did a REINSTALL of my os. I opened my computer recently and add new thermal paste to my heat sink ever since i did so my computer is responding ok not heating up until i open microsoft word. There seems to be a problem with word. also opening folders with to many pictures or FILES in them will also cause my comnputer to heat up and not respond. I did a clean install of my os and word. However as your main concern (other than the heat issue of course) seemed to be it's relationship to using "word". So i thought that you might want to see if an alternative to it might lessen your issue. The picture association can probably also be handled differently than you are at the present time. I tend to suspect that your issue is likely to be related to some internal hardware (fans for instance).truenorthI also could use works 8.0 i will try that program. No. you cannot do this. it is impossible. Well, that's not true, it's probably possible, but seriously, I really don't THINK you understand the implications of a PC without an administrator account. Any setting in control PANEL need changed? you need to change the resolution or update the sound or video driver? or run windows update? Well, hope your ready to reinstall to get the admin user back. have a malware infection? (although the LUA will help prevent this there are some tricky ones) well, hope your ready to reinstall. And of course installing programs will become impossible. Have you considered- you know, putting a PASSWORD on the administrator account? passwords are quite effective, when properly chosen, at keeping people who are not aware of the password from using the admin account. and with UAC it can display the prompt and he can get SOMEBODY to put the password in. Solve : Software Windows condensed, missing buttons? |

Answer» Something happened to my computer a while ago, where it had numerous problems and viruses, after i CLEARED it all out, i had a problem with a couple of my programs. For one, when i tried to you CCLEANER, the window was half the size it normally is, and several of the buttons were stacked on top of each other, or options were cut out of the window completely. I know this isn't very specific, but this is causing problems, because for software like pspvideo9, ccleaner, rapizvideo CONVERTOR and other programs are either condensed, or have certain parts options completely going off the window, and when i resize the window, it just enlarges the window, and the cut off areas are still cut off, help WOULD be appreciated, and i apologize for the wordy post...When you say "the window was half the size it normally is", do you MEAN that it's showing in a lower resolution/size so things look zoomed in, or is half of the moniter blank (not showing anything/black)? |

Solve : Photo Bucket? |

After posting User Content to the Site, you continue to retain all ownership or license rights in your User Content and you continue to have the right to use your User Content as you did prior to such posting. However, by posting or making User Content available through the Site or via the Services, you hereby grant to Photobucket a nonexclusive, royalty-free, transferable, worldwide license to use, copy, modify, prepare derivative works from, distribute, publicly display and publicly perform (whether by means of a digital audio transmission or otherwise) and process your User Content, or any part of it, solely on and through the Site and Services, including without limitation (a) adapting the format of your User Content (for example by encoding or transcoding) for suitable display on the Site; and (b) displaying, in Photobucket's sole discretion, your public User Content in search results generated by the Photobucket search engine. In addition, where you have made your User Content public, posted a link to your User Content on another website or otherwise shared a link to your User Content, you grant to Photobucket a nonexclusive, royalty-free, worldwide right to sublicense the right to copy, modify, prepare derivative works from, and distribute your User Content as necessary to perform the Services, including without limitation the printing services offered by Partner Sites. You acknowledge that you are solely responsible for all Content you submit to the Site or provide to the Service. You represent that you either own the User Content or have the rights necessary to grant Photobucket this license. Basically, we can do whatever we want with your pictures. I can put the pictures on my own account and display them WHEREVER I wish. 5. Right-clicking on a private picture gives all of the same information as a public picture. There's no special encoding/encryption. Basically, the only thing that is truly private is the account/folder itself. Somebody would need your password to get into your private account. But remember, anyone can view a public account. 6. People absolutely can not trace a picture back to your computer. Period. There's no way to get access to anything from your computer if you post pictures from PhotoBucket. Phew. I'm sure I've probably created more questions for you, but I hope I have at least provided some answers here. |

Solve : Bill & Authentification? |
|
Answer» From other posts it has been stated that it is possible to retain an operating system (Xp-pro media center) on a hard drive (internal)and install Vista Premium on another HDD (removable) on a computer that is authorized to utilize both operating systems. However maybe i am being paranoid but is there going to be a problem (authentification denial/cancelation/etc.) of the Vista if it becomes part of the HDD chain on another computer? After all a major reason for an external is portability and interchangeability with other computers. Even though i would have no intention nor desire to use the "Vista" on the "other" computer it is still there to be seen. i have many reservations about going solo with Vista at this moment.I have not yet installed the Vista on the external due to my thinking about this issue. truenorthFirst, I don't know that Vista can be installed on a removable disk. Unless I see this notion supported by a reliable source, I'm not ready to believe it. And, if it could, it's not a good idea. You would surely encounter problems if you tried to use that OS installation with different computers. Unless the computers were identical, they would have different device drivers. And, I believe it would surely be a violation of the software license agreement and, as you've mentioned, cause problems with authentication, i.e. activation of Windows. After all a major reason for an external is portability and interchangeability with other computers.Silly statement. External hard drives have many benefits but they are not intended for OS installation. What exactly are you trying to accomplish here ? ? p.s. Soybeans points are very valid.I suggest (with all do respect for the good work many of you do) that i is not productive to make presumptuios statements WITHOUT all the FACTS (Soybean "silly statement") + endorsed by patio it would appear. If it had not been for the ability to put an operating system on a removable HDD it is most unlikely that i could have rejuvinated a computer that had become a collection of metal and plastic parts. Also i had to do so as the HDD (internal) was not partitioned and --ah welll suffice to say it was not silly and it did solve a problem that many on the forums had not been able to solve (even though it became the most read post on the "software" forum-which it still is today). So comeon fellows try to refrain from derogatory comments that do nothing to advance the topic. which by the way both soybean and patio have not addressed. as one travels through the journey of life one should be adaptable to the ideas of others even though they may differ from ones own perceptions. After many decades on this earth i have learned long ago that there are often many ways to accomplish the same objective. There are those on the forum, i have wittnessed ,whose sole solution to computer problems seems to be "remove and reinstall an O/S". While this is sometimes the only solution it is not always the only solution. patio, what i am trying to accomplish here is the continued use of an o/S that works and i trust (Win xp-pro media center) and at the same time have available the newest O/S (Vista premium) which i don't know and at the moment don't trust (and it appears with good reason from the experience of many other Vista users not only on the CH forums). As was the case on the dead computer with no HDD partitioning this one also has just one huge unpartitioned HDD (mfgr. choice not mine) that obviously contains the XP-pro O/S . Now if i can load the Vista on the removeable HDD (without the concerns i have expressed) that will ALLOW me to use it and get to know it without the loss of something else until i decide if i want to use it or stay with XP. Hows that --still sound "silly"?? As to the "i don't know that Vista can be installed on a removeable disk" here is the source for the statement i made that another forum member advanced when queried on that topic--- Jonas Wauters Beginner Online Posts: 189 Toshiba Tecra M1 Re: coincident xp-pro/Vista « Reply #1 on: May 12, 2007, 12:26:01 PM » -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yes its completely possible to have to OSs. And yes its possible to install in on the removable hard drive. that's if that drive is large enough. Only I don't know how you can do that. I 'll follow this topic sow I learn how I can do that. Jonas Report to moderator Logged -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- OS: Windows XP professional (SP2) DOS: Version 5.1.2600 Processor: Intel Pentium M processor 16000Mhz RAM: 1024MB Video card: Trident Video Accelerator Cyber-XP4 I do hope someone will now give me the benifit of their knowledge and opinion as to the concern that i have expressed in order that i may decide whether i should even attempt this and try to ignore any inner voice that wants to say something that doesn't advance the topic. As is my case there exists at least one other person on the forums that has an interest in knowing more about this possibility. truenorthWell, your posting of a reply from another forum doesn't lend much support to prove that Win Vista can be installed on an external drive, since he admitted he did not know how to do it. Your last post portrays a somewhat different picture than your first post. In your last post, you seem to have dropped the idea of running Vista from an external drive on different computers. To run two OS on one computer, you really need a "dual boot" configuration. That can be done on a single, partitioned, hard drive or a system with two hard drives. Since your HD is not partitioned and you don't want to format the hard drive in order to use the standard Microsoft tools to partition your drive, you could obtain software such as Partition Magic that can partition a hard drive without formatting and erasing the drive. The other approach would be to install a second hard drive. Then, you could install Vista on it and you would have a dual boot system, allowing you to choose which OS to boot during startup. If your external hard drive is actually just an external enclosure with a standard IDE or SATA hard drive in it, you could remove that hard drive and install it in your computer as a second/slave drive. If the hard drive can not be removed from the enclosure, I think I'd buy another hard drive if possible, and keep your external HD for backup.Vista will only support a non-removeable drive for the system partition. it's not a supported installation scenario. And, there would really be no point in installing the system partition on an external drive, would there? Reference: Definition of System Partition and Boot PartitionYou would also have to have a MBoard that supports booting to a USB device. However if you do still want to dual-boot i would suggest another internal HDD. This would solve the dilemna nicely and leave you with all that storage space on the external...patio,soybean,contrex, Thank you all for your input. Much to think about. soybean, Just to clarify --nothing is different or changed from my 1st post. I would still want to use the Vista O/s on the "same" computer that the xp-pro media center O/S is on. It is a genuine external 250gb HDD not an internal in a case. I do not at the moment have any spare or extra HDD's kicking about. However this 250gb is available. It would be my intention as earlier stated to use this external between other computers in the household (but definetly not the Vista operating system other than on the computer it is authorized for --which coincidentally is the same one that has the media center O/S on it). However while i do not know how Microsoft accomplishes it's ability to validate it's O/S's i remain concerned that if this were doeable it would be there on a HDD to be detected on a computer for which it is 'not" authorized regardless of my intention not to use it on the "unauthorized" computer.Yes i am aware of the Symantec partition Magic software and i do believe it could allow a non destructive partition. However other than a version 5 (that is not useable -and not supported--which i paid good money for and have never used) i do not own that software. I don't see myself going that route as cost wise another internal HDD would be cheaper. contrex, Not that i doubt your statement --but if true that would seem to be the end of my quest to go that route. I would only say that due to problems on another computer i was able to have win98se (upgrade) installed on "C" drive on the sole internal HDD (replacing a non functioning Xp-Pro) AND Win xp-pro (corporate) on another external HDD ( 3 partitions 1-fat,2 ntfs) on the "G" partition of the external. I have been using that configuration for about 2 weeks now and no problems so far. I do appreciate that Vista is not Xp-pro and therein may lie the problem. So it seems that a dual boot from not only separate partitions but indeed separate and even external HDD's is possible (unless i have invented something up to now deemed not possible --and i sincerely doubt that).thank you all again for your observations and comments, truenorthQuote from: truenorth on May 24, 2007, 06:37:23 PM I do appreciate that Vista is not Xp-pro and therein may lie the problem. So it seems that a dual boot from not only separate partitions but indeed separate and even external HDD's is possible (unless i have invented something up to now deemed not possible --and i sincerely doubt that).thank you all again for your observations and comments, truenorth There's nothing inherently undoable about booting an OS from an external USB or firewire drive. Linux can be modified to do this fairly simply. See here for a discussion and some links. http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/linux/library/l-fireboot.html?ca=dgr-lnxw09FireBoot See here for plenty more http://www.google.co.uk/search?source=ig&hl=en&q=boot+linux+from+usb&btnG=Google+Search&meta=&aq=t&oq=boot+linux The problem with Windows, especially Vista, is that Microsoft does not want you to do this. From a paper, "Recommendations for Booting Windows from USB Storage Devices" published in 2004 Quote Windows does not support USB hard disk drives as the primary boot device http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/device/storage/usb-boot.mspx They make it clear that while USB devices may be used for OS deployment and repair, using a USB device from which to run an OS is not going to be supported. If it were, it would might endanger Microsoft's whole licensing strategy, since XP, which depends on tying the OS fairly firmly to a specific identifiable hardware set. Also, I can see security issues. If you could carry a full OS around, you could just walk up to any PC with a USB 2.0 or Firewire port and boot the thing up off your USB pen drive or hard disk (unless the BIOS was hardened against this). That having been said, it has been done, unofficially, up to and including XP. Vista may or may not be next... This page shows how. http://www.ngine.de/index.jsp?pageid=4176 Quote To keep the introduction short, Microsoft denies that booting Windows off a USB drive works. Here is another site http://searchwincomputing.techtarget.com/tip/0,289483,sid68_gci1254169,00.html You can easily get those PE disks, (Bart's PE, MiniPE, which modify the XP PE (Preinstall Environment) to form a ready made fully work ing XP bootable CD with network support, browser, disk tools such as Partition Magic, Ghost, etc, defraggers, and lots more. Well, this is a step up from those in terms of usability and functionality. I wonder if one could install Linux on an external HD and then install VMWare and put Vista on that? The man from Google he say YES!!! http://apcmag.com/4027/how_to_run_vista_on_linux_xp Contrex, WOW. Such a great amount of information and the research that it must have entailed on your part. I am extremely grateful for all the time and effort that you have obviously put into helping me (and I’m sure others) with your information. Thank you. You may rest assured that I shall follow and read all of your links (though some sleep may have to be sacrificed). I am a firm believer in the process of reading as many of the CH posts on computer issues that I can as it most certainly adds to ones knowledge and skills pertaining to the utilization of computers. I must now correct some misinformation that I gave on this post (unintentional). However as others may also be reading this post and perhaps contemplating some actions based on the information I have provided. I am currently working (others might describe it with a different verb) with 7 computers –4 very actively. I have represented that I have successfully installed and am using an O/S (win XP-pro corporate) on a removable HDD. This is false. It is dual booted on the same computer as the win98se (a Sony Vaio). It is indeed on “G” drive. However it is on the 3rd of 3 partitions of the same internal HDD (NTFS). I also do have a “G” drive on an external 250 GB HDD (also NTFS) and erroneously believed it was on that external that I had installed the XP-pro. However from what I do gather from just your last post on the topic “things are possible” to achieve certain situations re installation of O/S’s on external HDD. (I note your limitation emphasis on Vista) . Yes it was the aspect of “carrying it about “ to other computers that gave rise to my concern, which started my post on the subject. While I had and have no intention to use it interchangeably on other computers (non-authorized) perhaps there might be one person out there that might be inclined to do that . So I do appreciate the concern of Bill and his subordinates in that regard. Though I must say a similar concern does not seem to flow from them to us. As an example most new computers sold today (not tailor made ones) do NOT include a CD-r of the operating system. At best it is a “restore/recovery” utility—which I don’t believe can be used as a reinstall when a HDD, etc is lost. That is exactly our case with my wife’s recent purchase of the Cisnet computer that I wanted to do this project with. Also again typical the Cisnet came with the O/S (XP-pro media center ) preinstalled as well as other software on the one honking 120gb HDD with no partitions other than “C” on it. Without an O/S CD it is not possible (even if one were so inclined) to reformat and partition the Cisnet HDD without some 3rd party (Partion Magic, etc.) software. To try it without such a tool would be destructive I believe. So it would be nice if the mfgrs. And Microsoft would include a greater degree of concern for the great unwashed that use their products and not constrain us so much. Thanks again. truenorth Quote from: truenorth on May 25, 2007, 12:02:50 PM Yes it was the aspect of “carrying it about “ to other computers that gave rise to my concern Many companies here in the UK have a "no pen drive" policy, staff forbidden them and VISITORS having to give them up, BIOSes systematically passworded (this is often overlooked) and set to disallow USB or CD-ROM booting. Unauthorised data transfer to a USB device is bad enough, but if you boot from an external drive, you can browse and copy and leave no traces. But, if he installed Windows on an external drive and then tried booting it from a different computer from the one from which he installed it, he's likely to encounter some problems. Don't you agree? If he wants to be able to browse the web on someone else's computer without leaving a trail, I'd recommend just installing the portable version of Firefox on a flash drive. Quote I suggest (with all do respect for the good work many of you do) that i is not productive to make presumptuios statements without all the facts (Soybean "silly statement") + endorsed by patio it would appear. Not sure where this comes from or why offense was taken....we are talking about Vista now...not your other situation which was totally different.... p.s. I only advise remove and re-install OS as an absolute last resort so you must have someone else in mind. Don't bunch me in with those advisors. Nor soybean for that matter... |

Solve : MS Office Word 2003? |

Answer» Hi, guys, Is this happening with all Word files or just one? Quote Then I tried to open other word documents, still the same! Thanks contrex, I READ the article you suggested but have no ideas what so ever (i am no good with visual basic software)... I tried to use the repair function in MS Word but still not working.. I guess the only way to solve this is to re-install the softward! Cheers! Not necessarily. Find Normal.dot and delete or rename it. Then, restart Word and see whether the error message has stopped. Normal.dot Template—ExplainedQuote from: soybean on May 24, 2007, 03:27:19 PM Not necessarily. Find Normal.dot and delete or rename it. Then, restart Word and see whether the error message has stopped. Thanks soybean, I followed the procedure you (and the website) suggests and still the same. Maybe it will be quicker if I re-install the MS Office again..... thanks again! Yes, you might as well go ahead with uninstalling and reinstalling Office. If you changed any settings, modified toolbars, etc. from the defaults, you lose them because they'll be restored to defaults. And, if you had gotten any online updates to Office, you'll need to repeat that as needed. If you did not have the SP2 (Service Pack 2) update for Office, I suggest you install it SOMETIME after reinstalling Office. |

Solve : Stupit test. I can't set it back!? |

Answer» Before I had my other external hard drive I've tried to share my local E: drive THATS the drive I use for my documents. I would attach a screenshot but if I save it in paint it is to big. How can I change that?In paint, go to File - Save As - and under where you input the name, change it from *.bmp to jpeg settings and save it. This will REDUCE the size. And, if you want to reduce the dimensions of the image, go to Image, Stretch/Skew (in Paint) and enter some figure less than 100 in Horizontal and Vertical boxes.Ok Thanks I'll try it when I"m home. But does someone has an answer for my question?Have you tried this? highlight the shortcut, hold down the shift key, and press delete. If that doesn't work, and it is actually located on the E: drive, search the E: drive for shortcuts and delete it there.I've already tried shift delete and I can't find any shortcut on the E: drive. or do I have to look somewhere else then just in the explorer? Thanks for the replysHere is my (Late) screenshot: [cleaning up - ATTACHMENT deleted by admin]you need to change the share level of that drive. Read all about it here. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304040 Yes but I can't find any info about how you can turn a LEVEL 5 into a LEVEL 1. Could you help me white that? Jonas The option to make a folder private (Level 1) is only available to a user account in its own My Documents folder. To configure a folder and all the files in it to Level 1, follow these steps: 1.Right-click the folder, and then click Sharing and Security. 2.Select the Make this Folder Private check box, and then click OK. Local NTFS Permissions: •Owner: Full Control •System: Full Control Network Share Permissions: •Not SharedThanks but I know how to do that but I forgot to say that I do not use simple file sharing and If I use it it says that the disk isn't shared. But when I don't use it I can see that it is shared. Jonas |

Solve : word document recovery? |
|
Answer» When closing an important word document (what was once 47 pages is now only 39) i accidently clicked the 'no' option on doy uowant to save? And also, why didn't microsoft plan for this? why make it so that if you ACCIDENTALLY click the worng option, it destroys all your work completely, instead of keeping the auto-saved file until it's sure you didnt want it? What kind of morons do they employ?? When Word asks if you want to save the file, it is asking if you really want it. I don't think the morons are at Microsoft... I suppose they could have a "blonde" setting where the save dialog asks, "Are you sure", and "Are you really sure?", and "Are your really really sure?" etc but then you'd still get ditzoids saying "I accidentally clicked "no" six times! Those morons at Microsoft!" Quote i am very much upset by this. ive been crying. Makes a change from "HELP PLZZZ!" This post made me chortle, so I'll respond. contrex, do you have to be so negative? pissedoffteen - Are you sure the backup ones are gone? Go to Tools --> Folder options in Windows Explorer, and select "Show hidden Files". Go to the folder the word document was in, and see if anything else shows up. If not, try Recuva and see if that can recover the files. In the meantime, try to limit writing to the HDD, as in doing anything with the PC, to maximize the chances of recovering it.absolutely sure. Hidden files are always shown anyway. It made a new backup file about five seconds after i reopened the file, but it didn't have anything new in it. i suppose its a mercy i didnt lose the whole thing. i'll try recuva, thanks. As to the other guy, what i meant was that it is perfectly possible to press the wrong button. I'll admit that in my entire life this is the first time its happened to me, but still: it keeps backup files if you exit without saving in other ways, why not assume that sooner or LATER people will accidentally click the worng button? it kind of defeats the point of backup files if you delete them doesnt it? And im a little worn down...lots of coffee and three days of solid revision and courseowkr, stopping only to sleep (not even stopping while eating) takes it out of you. i was at the end of my tether. then it snapped.ow. elastic bandy tether. Give it a go, it may not help but it's worth a shot. pissedoffteen, I'm in the same situation, exams coming up etc, really takes it out of you. Get some sleep, it's worth it in the long run even if you feel it wastes too much time. Otherwise you just end up wasting time trying to revise because you can't concentrate.Recuva didnt really help...but thanks anyway. it'll help next time i thoughtlessly delete something. just not when microsoft does it for me, apparently. it seems to have overwritten it rather than deleted it. hmm. Well, it was worth a shot. Just think twice before clicking anything, and save every 5 minutes, especially when working on something important. I've had the same thing happen to me before and it is annoying, but it just made me resolve to double check before clicking anything and to be certain I saved often. For future essays/papers, you may want to consider using something like KeyNote. It's a tabbed program that saves your work as you TYPE. It's not the prettiest program, but it sure is handy. |

Solve : How to reassign what program my digital camera opens with?? |

Answer» I just bought my daughter a used digital camera (FUJI) and after installing the software, I connected the camera to the PC. SINCE it was the first time connecting it, the box popped up asking me how I wanted to OPEN it, so I figured I'd try to see if the software for my camera (Canon) would work (it didn't). Anyway, the problem is I accidentally clicked the "always use this option" when I connected it the first time, so now it does it AUTOMATICALLY which MEANS the only way to access pics from the camera now is to open it as an external drive and take them out one at a time. Is there any way to reassign what program the camera opens with?roccenstein ....Have you tried uninstalling the camera as well as the camera software . Rebooting the machine, then reinstall the camera software ....and then connect the camera....hopefully you will get the open with option again. |

Solve : How reliable is microsft word created date on a document?? |
|
Answer» I am in a battle with our association. I own a condo in florida and shortly after buying it the board changed the rental rule. They did so without 2 week notice to owners so we were unable to speak. The board president is what we call a dictator(his way or take highway). We had a hearing and he and one other PERSON stated that they gave the 2 week notice sent out and posted on Sept 6. I was able to examine the COMPUTER records and microsoft word shows the created date as being Sept 16. How reliable is this? I have always wondered about this....because if it was re-saved somewhere new on a particular date, wouldn't the windows time stamp change, because that particular document was made at a different date? The time stamp changes if it was an actual timestamp... if you just put the date in, say: 01/20/2009 It WONT change itself, you have to put a timestamp in specifically. |
