Solve : Why is an assemblhy binding issues not allowing Connectify to run??

Answer»

Thank you for taking the time to look at this. I am totally stumped. I seem to only have this issue when trying to use "Connectify". Connectify is a windows 7 only program that allows you to create a Wifi access point using software and Windows 7.

I also noticed that when I boot my computer the system resources go extremely high until i KILL the Connectify process.

Thank you for any help you can offer.

p.s. I TRIED uninstalling and then reinstalling the software but that did not help and neither did a system restore. I am not sure if this helps, but I had been messing around with the 'programs and features' and the 'turn windows features on and off' tabs in the control PANEL. All i turned off and then turned back on was the Windows 7 search function, but it is back on now.

That software is still a BETA....
They have a Forum though...

Yes I know it is BETA but its vouched for by soooo many reputable places that its not really an issue I think. I did not know they had a forum though, thank you for that info.where do you see the forum link? Problem solved! WOOOOPEEE!

Fix:

I went into the ""Turn Windows Features on and Off" and enabled "Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5.1" and now Connectify works!

Thank you soo much for GIVING me the .NET info to go on. I knew it had to be something I did in the "Turn Windows Features on and off" section.

Solve : New PC Cleanup?

Answer»

Ok my mom has a new computer with Windows 7 on it and being new it has all the advertising on it and it runs slow, I am looking for a program that will clean this up for me, I found a program call PC Decradifier but I don't know anyone who has used it. Is this a good program to use or any SUGGESTIONS on adware removal?

Thanks! She has all WHAT advertising on it?PC Decradifier is good. Go ahead and use it. It should be helpful to you.Hang on. I'd like to know what the OP is talking about. A new system should not be running slowly regardless of what's installed.I believe the OP is talking about What's some of the preinstalled unnecessary software that comes with your computer? But, I agree he needs to confirm that. I understood the possibilities - I know what is preinstalled on systems. I just have some questions.I'm sorry I forgot to list this information, what I actually see on the desktop is an Icon shortcut for Net Zero and Netflix Trial, I cannot find the programs in the Control Panel>Uninstall Programs or in my Start Menu>Programs so I don't know how to remove the whole file. Other than this I don't know what else maybe installed.

Also the computer was purchased at Best Buy and a Geek Squad agent told me they would optimize it for $130.00 which would clean up the advertising and tweek the system so it would run 20% faster but i'm looking for a way to do this myself. They cannot do anything to make your system run 20% faster. Is there some problem with it now? Does it seem to be running well? As for the icons, they are probably shortcuts to url's. What happens if you click on them? You may not need to do any more than just delete the icons.

Download and run Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel. Are there any startup items with which you are unfamiliar?Quote from: Randy1887 on February 10, 2010, 10:24:47 PM

I'm surprised Net Zero and Netflix Trial are the only extras you see on the desktop. They are probably nothing more than shortcuts to a website, and you can simply right click on them and delete them. However, since they have no affect on the computer's performance, deleting them will yield no change in that regard.

As I previously stated, I'd go ahead and run PC Decrapifier. It will not remove anything without your permission, and it's helpful in identifying things that could be removed. See http://www.pcdecrapifier.com/howitworks and http://www.pcdecrapifier.com/removes for more info. After the computer has loaded windows and all the icons it works well, it just seems to me that from the time I turn on the computer until it actually brings up my desktop is WAY to long than most computers it took approximately 4 or five mins to completely get everything running. It is a Gateway NV52, has an AMD Athlon Dual Core proccessor and 4 gig RAM so I would think it would boot up faster than this, also my mom has installed programs on it such as The Print Shop 22, Quickens and 2 or 3 other programs. From start go to run>type in msconfig>click ok> click on start up and un check the the boxes that you dont need on start up.Quote from: xavier on February 12, 2010, 09:18:46 AM

Do NOT do this. Msconfig is a diagnostic utility. Use a 3rd party utility such as the aforementioned Startup Control Panel to manage startup items. One program you may want to try is Ccleaner http://www.ccleaner.com/ it will clean up your PC and it also will Fix Registry errors which may slow it down. it has worked wonders for me. you can use it to delete programs but i dont recommend it. i would still use the control panel for that.Quote from: nitelife2989 on February 12, 2010, 10:55:41 AM

Sorry, but...
1) It does not "clean your pc". It deletes temp files you can delete on your own if you prefer
2) It does not fix registry errors. And the entries it deletes from the registry do not slow down anything

A lot of people use it and it's a pretty harmless utility. Having said that, in my opinion it's also pretty useless.

One day, I WOKE up an entire hour late. my entire schedule was skewed an entire hour. I ended up missing wheel-of-fortune. It bothered me for weeks. "what word combinations and vowels did people buy in the missed show?" I wondered, often aloud to my cat, who generally stared at me quizzically and sprayed the couch yet again. I talked to my friend Deloris and she said that I could watch the show I missed on-line. She didn't tell me what I needed, so I then TOOK nearly a week trying to setup my old selectric. I'm smart enough to know that a computer keyboard is more magical then then typewriters keys, but I couldn't find where I was supposed to plug it in. thankfully, Deloris' Son was able to set a new PC up for me, quite the Darling, I remember when I used to change his diapers, or perhaps I'm remembering my Son. Solve : Kyocera Laylo M1400?

Where could I and or him find it? He needs these pictures ASAP.

Thanks.I would try the phone manuf. SITE first...Just bought Laylo M1400. No USB cable. Called Kyocera corporate. Specifically said no cable because only WAY to transfer pics to PC is by sending message via MetroPCS. Said no software exists to interface Laylo phone to PC.

No mention of this limitation made on packaging, user guide, web pages or by ignorant MetroPCS sales people.

Deceptive advertising in attempt to get users to pay for image transfers.

Any one for a class action suit?

If anyone knows of 3rd party apps that might work, please let me know. Thanks!I admit I'm totally ignorant when it comes to cell phones but...could your friend e-mail the pix to himself and capture the pictures from the e-mail?

RosieBluetooth! I set it up on my phone & computer in about 5 minutes and transfered all pics to COMUTER and my ringtones to the phone. No cables or software needed.
Can you please explain to me how it could be done, jmontana1679? My friend would appreciate it...Thanks in Advance.

Solve : "Computer Not Communicating"?

Answer»

Ah yes i do see my erroneous reference to the computer that the Dell tech was working on. I guess i automatically felt that the "Dell" tech would not do anything on an HP computer.I must confess that your last post i find very confusing. There is a point in it where i was certain the printer issue with the Dell laptop is solved. It does appear from your last post that a successfull install of the Dell 960 printer software has been accomplished on the Dell laptop. Is that so? And are we to understand that if that is so that you are still unable to use the Dell printer on the HP desktop only?Is that correct? My insistence on following the method of INSTALLING the printer as specified by the "manual" was because each printer can have certain aspects of the install of hardware/software that is specific to that printer (they do vary printer to printer as well as being different depending on the operating system on some printers). So while i was certainly aware of the efforts you had made to remove and reinstall i was not certain if you had followed the precise instructions of the manual which is usually critical to success. What is being requested of you when ""Please Select Network Printer You Want To Use" is because you are on a network and on that network there are more than one printer. So at that point a list of the available printers should be displayed or somewhere on the open printer window (this is fuzzy with me now) as as i told you i am using a hardware method for printer sharing (not a network) and it has been some time since i used the network method should be an option to display all the available printers on the network and then when you select the A960 then you will be able to use it. At this point the printer program needs to be directed to the printer you want to use. It will NOT print (the laptop) until that is satisfied.I have never tried to use 2 printers on a network with 2 computers. Most people would use one printer with 2 (or more) computers. It may be because of the fact that you are using 2 printers (and want to for whatever reason continue to do so) you may have to designate the specific printer of use each time you want to print. Although GIVEN that you CAN print from the HP printer on the Dell laptop which is physically connected to the desktop (and as well i assume from the HP desktop also). It seems that only when you want to use the Dell printer from the HP desktop that you GET the need to identify the printer. Is that right? As a matter of interest when you are using these 2 printers are they both turned on at the same time? If so what happens if you only turn on one printer at a time? If i am not mistaken we do have considerable progress here -- 2 printers--2 computers are now working--just not the way you want them to.
truenorthHi Truenorth: I'll do my best on each of your uncertainties:
1. The Dell tech was working on the Dell A960 connected to the HP.
2. Yes, A960 is installed on Dell laptop (as well as the HP).
3. You got me on a double negative: "... if that is so that you are still unable to use the Dell printer on the HP desktop only?..."
Believe answer is Yes, A960 prints from the HP (its cable being in HP tower)
4. Followed manual in order to get to where Dell glitches encountered.
5. What I said in para following "Please select..." were the succession of screens which appeared (and which left me unable to comply without your help)

a. FIRST there is \\RODELL alone (apparent reference to laptop); then an addition \\RODELL41PC (apparently the desktop).
b. At one point, "Add A Printer" brought forth "You do not have sufficient rights to perform this operation". As I found all printers: Dell A960/HP 970CSe/Microsoft Document Writer\Fax I disregarded it.
c. I am puzzled by each of the two printers having almost duplicate entries: Dell AIO Printer A960 & Dell AIO Printer A960 on RODUKE41PC. Same thing with the HP 970SCe.
Assume one entry each is for each of the two computers.

Tried printing with one and then the other (on A960) but "error" and no printing.
Perhaps you can provide a step-by-step sequence to resolve all this.

6. You say, "...It seems that only when you want to use the Dell printer from the HP desktop that you get the need to identify the printer. Is that right?" Answer, Yes, although unsure of your meaning. The network has the same IP addresses for the computers and the identities are as you see, not only there, but there almost in duplicate.
7.No, the two printers are not on at same time. Each is ON only when printing with it.

As to why have two printers, first, they print very differently and second, the cost of cartridges (and local availability at thrift stores!) also differ.
Also, I am less likely to find myself unexpectantly unable to print.
The A960 is far superior to the 970CSe when need color.

Yes Truenorth, your conclusion of progress is right on, and I hope I have clarified your various points. What remains are the essential NETWORK entries for the laptop. My para 5, a-b-c-etc., is not definitive, but illustrates my ignorance of just what is required.

Cordially,

I am afraid that i have reached the limits of my ability to assist further in your issue. I note that "plodr" on "Major geeks" is also endeavoring to resolve your issue. Your reasons as stated for desiring to use more than one printer are readily understood. My wife and i are using a variety of them ourselves for reasons of quality and differences of paper size, etc. So in and of itself the use of more than a single printer is not unusual. What is unusual is that you are trying to use more than one printer on more than one computer while having them all interconnected. By the way my earlier "hardware" solution will not work in your situation unless you wish to use two computers with one printer. The only way that solution could be used for you is if you had two of the devices and unplugged one from the two computers when you wished to use the other printer. Which to me is as readily accomplished by simply connecting the particular printer you want to use to the specific computer you want to use it on (manually) at the moment of desired use (this of course being dependant on both printer's software being installed on both computers). Which seems to be where you are now. If you ever do get this operation working in the manner you are seeking i personally would be interested to know how it was accomplished to increase my knowledge. good luck, truenorthMuch appreciate your time and trouble, Truenorth. Of course disappointing not to be able to activate the network but easily understood.

What keeps me going is what I'm after is just what I had and used without difficulty for over a year. That eliminates any interest in your hardware referral. Sure, I can simply switch the cable between computers as software now working on both of them. If I were more tech-savvy I'm sure d-Link Router could resolve the network problem but that's not the case.

Only hope left is plodr. If he fails I'll have no choice but to call in expensive microsoft certified techs. As you may know, that's a very hazardous area, but FYI, two I have found as reliable, honest and capable are FASTEX & NETSURGEONS.

Cordially,It bothers me to have to give up on something. So i have done a bit more investigating to see if anyone else has tried to do what you are trying (the same or similar) and i have a few links for you that may contain that missing ingredient. Here they are:
http://asia.cnet.com/digitalliving/ask/0,3800004928,62033844,00.htm
It occurs to me (even though you may have done it differently when it worked in the past) you should be able to accomplish the same thing if the 2 computers are physically close enough to each other by joining them with an ethernet cable to their ethernet ports. As an example:
http://www.labnol.org/software/connect-computers-without-router/11049/
This last one contains "tons" of info re set up all kinds of networking situations.
http://compnetworking.about.com/od/homenetworking/Home_Networking_Setting_Up_a_Home_Network.htm
One more,
http://www.howstuffworks.com/home-network.htm
truenorthroduke 41, can you recap a few key points here, to spare us the pain of having to read through this very long thread? You two computers, two printers, and you want to connect one printer to each computer and share both printers so that either computer can use either printer. Is that right?

Is either of the printers networkable? Any printer can be shared by enabling file and printer sharing in Windows. But, "networkable" means being able to connect the printer to a router rather than to a computer, and then accessing the printer from any computer networked via that router.

My guess is the HP printer is much older than the Dell, right? And, the HP is not networkable, right? How about the Dell? Apparently, at least one of the printers is network-capable since you mentioned your router and having contacted D-Link support.

And, now, some questions which I believe have not been asked. Since you could just connect one printer to each computer, why do you need to share or network them? If you can get one of the printers working as a shared or networked printer, would that not be enough? Why do both printers need to be accessible to both computers? Quote from: roduke 41 on February 12, 2010, 11:56:23 AM

If he fails I'll have no choice but to call in expensive microsoft certified techs.
You know, for what it would cost to pay for Microsoft support, you could probably buy a new network-capable printer. I have a Brother AIO connected to my D-Link DI-524 router and can access from two desktop computers connected by cable to the router and from my laptop by wireless connection. I paid about $109 for the AIO, but I got it during an exceptionally good promotional offer from newegg.com. But, other models that normally sell for less than mine are also network-ready.

truenorth, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, learn the concept of paragraphs. It would make your posts a lot easier to read. I'll do my best, Soybean.
1. Yes; simply put, COMPLETE interchangeability between both computers & both printers.

2. Both networkable (although neither printer is "wireless"). As said, worked heretofore flawlessly!

3. Hard to say which printer older; both old. But question repetitive: both networkable as per (2) above.

4. Currently no sharing/networking. Each prints on whatever printer cable connected to it. Now both printer cables are connected to HP desktop. So it prints from both. Laptop does not print from either unless/until cable connected to it. More briefly, there's no network.
No reason to be content with half-a-loaf! Have Router, should have network; should have full capability.

5. Know what you mean! DellOnCall assures will reestablish network for $129. Microsoft "only" $70. Geeks a matter of time/distance and who-knows-what-cost. Another difficulty is some of the very competent MSN techs, and there's a whole slew of them, are expert in some areas, and useless in others -- and no way to know which even if they do "estimate". Two references I supplied are entirely different and far more reasonable.

Cordially,OK, to reiterate, you could just connect one printer to each computer and leave it at that. Quote from: roduke 41 on February 12, 2010, 01:55:55 PM

Also checked re "Additional drivers", desktop being XP SP3 & laptop Vista SP2. Found list half-dozen items, one of which (an Intel) checked YES.
Went to laptop SHARING; no "Add Printer" (as was on desktop); checked name, found Printer 4, but when Cancelled, checked again, up came the Dell A960.

I had not intended to follow directions had "Add Printer" been there inasmuch as six printers already shown The Dell A960 & HP Deskjet 970CSe being each shown twice, it was safe assumption the ones with title RODELL41PC referred to desktop; ones without that to the laptop. BUT on the desktop there was only one entry for each printer, each without RODELL41PC in title. Total five printers if include "Add Printer".
The "Additional Drivers" area was "blued out".

NETWORK ACTIVE LAPTOP PRINTED ROUTINELY! (This despite both printer cables connected to desktop!)

Here's the rub: Selecting HP Deskjet in place of the Dell A960: DID NOT PRINT.

One further anomoly on desktop. Opening taskbar A960 icon in use, 0 documents. At Ctrl Panel PRINTERS, the other icon with abbreviated title showed 3. Accepted to Cancel 2, but not the 3rd.
On desktop all five printers "0" & "Ready".

Solve : Loss of computer after attempt at backup?

Post a screenshot of what Paragon is showing for drives and partitions...
And post a description of how you have these physical drives and partitions laid out prior to the image backup...patio, I will require some guidance of how to produce the information you DESIRE (while it is still available before i have the paragon instructions). IE: How do i create a screen shot when i still have the limited access to that computer? I can try a digital picture and send that but i don't know what the quality and word definition will look like. As to what the partitions were "prior" to the image backup:
A) If they were different than what they now appear on the Paragon wizard (which i doubt) i sure cannot remember. I do remember that there were/are 3 on each physical HD. Also to the best of my recollection i believe one on each physical HD was an NTSF and the others were FAT32. But what the assigned letters to them as to the file format i cannot remember. On the wizard the WAY they are lettered at the MOMENT is from "C" through "H" inclusive. Whereas originally there were "E" and "I" for the 2 optical drives in the wizard they are "X" and "Y" if i remember from my only observation. Anyway they are much later in the alphabet than they were originally.
If you can tell me how i can give you the info you request i will make every effort to comply. It usually takes 3-4 days before Paragon replies so i do have some time to try to get you the info.truenorthTHIS POST IS COMING TO YOU FROM MY SONY VIAO. OK OK enough shouting! But boy do i EVER feel i have earned it. To all of you that have endeavored with your knowledge and experience to assist me a great big thank you. It was largely due to 2 factors that i have recovered it.
1.The iso software program provided from Paragon and
2.My wife standing over my shoulder holding my feet to the fire as i tried to follow the instructions (which i will add to this post when i go over to my Compaq where they are) as
a) typical of a lot of males i have a hard time with understanding instructions.
b) the sequence explained in the instructions were not accurate and it took some initiative and imagination to find a workaround method of using them.
This subject seemed to have generated a lot of views. So to those of you that were following it and have HUNG in there my message would be:
a) don't give up and
b)persevere.

What is the best computer SOFTWARE to REPLACE very outdated index cards - would like something where we can either bring up lists of our customers by their last NAMES or by the MONTH they are due for service?http://www.azzcardfile.com/

Solve : Remove Corp version of Norton?

Answer»

Hi All,
I have a Windows 2000 PRO computer running a corp version of Symantec Antivirus. It is version 10.1.

I am trying to get RIP of it. When I run the uninstall it asks for a uninstall password which I don't have....

Need some ideas on how to get rip of it.

THANKS
Have you used this? http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039Remove it from Add/Remove programs...
Then Run This...Thanks but the problem is that when I start to run the add and remove it gets about HALF way though the removal and then asks for a password. It will not let me complete the uninstall without the password.

[Saving space, attachment deleted by admin]Norton Removal Tool won't work on Corporate Edition.
You can try manual removal: http://service1.symantec.com/support/ent-security.nsf/pfdocs/2002031914291648?open
I don't touch Norton, so if it'll ask you for some password, I can't help you.Hope this works, try the following steps

Quote

The default password that should work for most of the Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition client uninstallation is “symantec“.

However, if the default password didn’t work, this is what you should do:

1) Go to Start -> Run and type regedit

2) Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\INTEL\LANDesk\VirusProtect6\CurrentVersion\Administrator Only\Security\

3) Double click on the value name “UseVPUninstallPassword” and change the value from 1 to 0

4) Close the REGISTRY and retry the uninstall.
Thanks......

I tried a bunch of passwords I thought it might be and found that the symantec worked!

I was able to finish the uninstall and its gone!

Thanks everyone......

Another fine example of why you should avoid Norton at all costs...there are a bunch of quality free AV's to choose from, if free is what you like
This was a low end build for a kid to get email and surf the web.

I am not a big fan of Norton and wanted to pull it out before I had trouble with it and the kid. I loaded avast! and malwarebytes.

I get the feeling I will be seeing this machine again after the kid toasts it.

Thanks again all !

Solve : Add/Delete screen not showing all programs?

Answer»

I'm running XP on a standard Dell desktop. Trying to find in the Add/Delete screen, from the Control Panel, PROGRAMS that show up when I go Computer - C drive- Program Files- specific file. How do I get a complete population? Some apps simply do not land there...what app is it you are looking for ? ?
Also CHECK to see if the app has it's own un-installer...some do.The specific program is just a MP4 Trading chart..... but I've got about 50% more programs listed in the Program FOLDER than appear in the Add/Delete screen. You will need to check them...

I'm assuming you repopulated the list after it's done loading here...I didn't know that it could be repopulated.....or how to do it. Instructions please. This usually happens when an installation places an invalid entry in the registry. If you scroll down the Add/Remove window, you will probably see the other entries.

To fix the display of A/R, use REGEDIT and navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

Use "Find" to search for DisplayIcon.

If the value for one or more APPLICATIONS end in -1, change the 1 to a 0

Close REGEDIT

That should solve the display problem.

Usual warning about backing up the registry applies.

I also stated above truenorth that when I open folders with lots of pictures my computer would heat up not only with word.Yes i did see that. However as your main concern (other than the heat issue of course) seemed to be it's relationship to using "word". So i thought that you might want to see if an alternative to it might lessen your issue. The picture association can probably also be handled differently than you are at the present time. I tend to suspect that your issue is likely to be related to some internal hardware (fans for instance).truenorthI also could use works 8.0 i will try that program. Will installed it via cd and see if it works fine.I TRIED works and it seems to work fine.

I was just wondering if anyone could provide me the names of a couple of programs that would completely remove all admin rights and the admin user on a Vista computer?

No. you cannot do this. it is impossible.

Well, that's not true, it's probably possible, but seriously, I really don't THINK you understand the implications of a PC without an administrator account.

Any setting in control PANEL need changed? you need to change the resolution or update the sound or video driver? or run windows update?

Well, hope your ready to reinstall to get the admin user back.

have a malware infection? (although the LUA will help prevent this there are some tricky ones) well, hope your ready to reinstall.

And of course installing programs will become impossible.

Have you considered- you know, putting a PASSWORD on the administrator account? passwords are quite effective, when properly chosen, at keeping people who are not aware of the password from using the admin account. and with UAC it can display the prompt and he can get SOMEBODY to put the password in.

Solve : Windows Vista Movies On Windows XP?

Answer»

Hey everyone.

I've created a movie for school using Windows Movie Maker on Windows Vista, at HOME. At my fathers house, I'm there now, we have Windows XP, so do the computers at school. When I try to view the video I have created on Windows Movie Maker on XP, it says the video was made with an incompatible version of Windows Movie Maker. Is there anyway that I can view and edit the video on Windows XP? My FRIEND still needs to do some digital editing as well, and he has Windows XP. All help is appreciated.Did you try this:

In movie maker, click File --> Save Movie File --> Next --> Next --> and Next again.
This saves the movie/video as a format the can be played with any media player. All right, I'll try that when I'm back at my moms. When I tried to save it, there was no such option. I couldn't save it as anything other than the default format.I've attatched a screenshot of the Windows Movie Maker we have here at school.
Some features should be the same with Vista's Movie Maker so it should look familiar.

Check the picture out and post back to see if it helps.

[cleaning up - attachment deleted by admin]I'll have to try TOMORROW night, I don't have the FLASH drive with me. But I think that is the same as the publish movie option in vista, because I don't see save movie anywhere. If I do that will I still be able to edit it?To edit the file after being saved, you have to import it on Windows Movie Maker.
If you used several clips and put them together for the video, they will all be joined to one large clip. All right. Thanks, I'll let you know if it WORKS out tomorrow.

Solve : OUTLOOK MAIL 2000?

Answer»

Ok please excuse if not in right topic am new first post of many I imagine.

Every time I try send a e-mail from another site I get message about default mail, then I get a address for a gmail acct that for what ever reason won't take my password. How do I get rid of the gmail thing and use my OUTLOOK acct as default mail. Have searched all over can't find what I am looking for.Open Internet Explorer and go to Tools, Internet Options, and select Programs. If Outlook is not shown as the default email program, change it to Outlook. Click Apply and OK. Did that solve the PROBLEM?Ok outlook is posted as DEFAULT MAIL, how do I change what acct is listed. I have dumped all the e-nmail accounts they no longer exist. Just like today tried order a part from a site when I clicked on the e-mail in that site it showed OUTLOOK when I click send it has a box that says something about using default mail. It then shows a G mail acct that don't exist. So, if you open Outlook and go to Tools, E-mail accounts, View or change existing e-mail accounts, no accounts are shown? Right?

Download CCleaner, install and run it's Windows scan, Applications scan, and Issues scan. For info on configuring it, see Configuring CCleaner. When you run the Issues scan, backup the registry as prompted before removing the items CCleaner found. Repeat the Issues scan; it may find additional items upon a repeat scan.

Installing CCleaner will also install a Yahoo toolbar unless you elect not to do so. You'll see the option soon after starting the installation of CCleaner. I suggest you SKIP the Yahoo toolbar.

After using CCleaner, try the email link again and see whether gmail still appears. When in accts all I see is the two accounts that I listed and want. Nothing for G-mailThis what I am getting

The title of your post is OUTLOOK MAIL 2000. You said Outlook, not Outlook Express. Now, you're showing a screen shot of Outlook Express. Outlook does not equal Outlook Express; they are different programs.

Do you use a dialup Internet service?I don't see any place that says EXPRESS. When I click on help I get MICROSOFT OUTLOOK 2000

What's new in Outlook 2000
In each topic, you'll find information about new features in Microsoft Outlook 2000, along with ideas about how you might use them in your work.

Your screen shot shows Outlook Express three places.
Ok see what you are talking about hadn't seen that before or paid any attention to it. I was just mad about not being able send mail or sign into the account. I had conntacted GOOGLE canceled all G-mail acct.
Would that be because of the G-mail thing? The screen shots are from the site I was trying to send mail to. Can they have me signed into EXPRESS without me really knowing what is going on?

In my OUTLOOK acct it all refers to OUTLOOK 2000.This help any? Appreciate the help, I'm a real NERD.

Open Outlook Express, go to Tools, Accounts, Mail, and make screen print and post it. Also, open Internet Explorer, go to Tools, Internet Options, Programs, and post a screen print.

When MAKING screen prints, Alt/Print Screen will CAPTURE only the application in focus.

And, again, Do you use a dialup Internet service?
wow am learning that works great.

You did not post the screen print for Programs, as shown here:

So, select the Programs tab and then post it. And, please make it smaller. There's no need to post an image that large.

And, still waiting the for other items requested in my previous post. Ok think I have the mystery solved, dumped EXPRESS reinstalled and got rid of G-mail addy. Thank you for your help. Being a NERD MAKES things about 4 times harder than for anyone else.

Solve : B5T to ISO?

Answer»

Hey.

I'll keep it short. I have ISOBuster, Alcohol 120% and a dozen B5T files that would take me a month to redownload.

They don't work properly unless mounted on a virtual drive (or so I ASSUME) but THEREIN lies the dillema: ISOBuster doesn't MOUNT and Alcohol 120% doesn't READ B5T files. I also have a shareware version of BlindWrite6... but I can't see any mounting OR extracting features on that.

As always this place is my last resource (that's not meant to be offensive, just know I have exhausted my resources).

Thanks in advanced .
Have you tried http://club.cdfreaks.com/Thanks, I'll make a post there.

But if anyone else has any solutions, feel free to add them.

Solve : What program should go first??

Answer»

This is our first home computer, and in the 3 months we've had it we have had countles probs. Three weeks ago I spent $99 to have Geeksquad make remote repairs to it, and after 4 days and 14 hours on the phone we ended up with only most of the problem fixed, and Windows XP OFFICE installed x1 and XP Home edition installed x2. It has been sugested that I just wipe the hard drive and start from scratch. What I need to know is what disc do I install first, or does it matter what goes first? Gateway provided me with 4 disc's:
1) Windows XP Home operating system disc.
2) Applications & Drivers disc.
3) Nero 6 Suite.
4) Microsoft Works 8.5
Any idea what goes first? I will be greatfull for any advice about this. The way you have your list above is how you could use your CD's. The Windows XP Home operating system should always be first. Next you should use the applications and drivers disc to install the drivers on the computer if something is not WORKING and then applications (if there really an application you need installed often it's just junk programs). Nero is the program USED for burning software and you shouldn't need Microsoft Works if you have Office.

Solve : Google desktop toolbar keeps returning?!?

Answer»

I have Google desktop V5.1.750 And I USE the forecast add on I enlarged it and putted it on my desktop.
But I don't need the sidebar nor the Deskbar of Google.
Sow I Right click on my Deskbar>toolbars and undo Google toolbar.
Then I have what I want.
But every time I reboot the Deskbar is there again.
Is there a way how I can make sure that the Deskbar stays away?

As usual thanks in advance

Jonas I'm not sure, but I think you have to go to the control panel, then add/remove programs and remove the Google desktop bar. But it might get rid of all of it, not let you stay with just a part of it. Let us know how you did.NO that's not a possibility.
I need that part of the program without it I can't have the forecast.
I just need something to keep the taskbar hidden.

Jonas Can't have one without the other...sorry.

Look into some other forecast programs...FireFox has an extension for this.I googled for it but can't find anything that isn't red marked by siteadvisor.

Jonas Dump Site Advisor...

Here YA Go...It doesn't work for my country: I live in Belgium.
And Why would I dump SiteAdvisor??

Jonas I wouldn't dump SiteAdvisor, but it's not always accurate. The below link, for example...

http://www.freedownloadmanager.org/downloads/Weather4you_24646_p/

It's red-flagged, but the site is perfectly safe. It just gets a red mark for linking to a QUESTIONABLE site on its Awards page.

DoubleClick, however, gets a green rating. But if you actually view the summary...
http://www.siteadvisor.com/sites/doubleclick.com?ref=safesearch&aff_id=370-16&premium=false&suite=true

You'll see it's not EXACTLY a site you want to be going to. SiteAdvisor is handy, but it takes a bit of your own discretion sometimes. And whenever you visit a site, you're not sure about, read the summary (just click on More Info) and viewer ratings. You can't always put your faith in just the McAfee ratings.Quote from: Jonas Wauters on May 24, 2007, 03:10:53 PM

It doesn't work for my country: I live in Belgium.

Jonas

Did you even read the link ? ?
It works anywhere in the U.K.

More HereCan't I just hide this Deskbar each time at startup?
Or make it impossible to unhide Google Deskbar?

Solve : Software Windows condensed, missing buttons?

Answer»

Something happened to my computer a while ago, where it had numerous problems and viruses, after i CLEARED it all out, i had a problem with a couple of my programs. For one, when i tried to you CCLEANER, the window was half the size it normally is, and several of the buttons were stacked on top of each other, or options were cut out of the window completely. I know this isn't very specific, but this is causing problems, because for software like pspvideo9, ccleaner, rapizvideo CONVERTOR and other programs are either condensed, or have certain parts options completely going off the window, and when i resize the window, it just enlarges the window, and the cut off areas are still cut off, help WOULD be appreciated, and i apologize for the wordy post...When you say "the window was half the size it normally is", do you MEAN that it's showing in a lower resolution/size so things look zoomed in, or is half of the moniter blank (not showing anything/black)?

BTW, what is your OS(operating system i.e. XP, Vista)? What did you use to remove the malware and how do you know it is all gone? Please list all current protection for us, and then run ALL of those scans in safe mode.

Solve : Photo Bucket?

Answer»

Ok,

but you have not commented on the point I am implying, and that is to be more direct, . . .

then I can assume that someone can not pick up on the URL and proceed to BACK track to my desk top.

I really don't understand the point of origin, unless your saying, . .
that you can click on a posted-image that you would find for example in CH,
and thereby get the information we are discussing. Correct ?

According to this;

"Registered User." Registered Users are limited to one free account per person. You may also upgrade to a "PRO" account by paying a membership fee, in which case you are entitled to one free account (in addition to your PRO account). Your Photobucket account is solely for your own personal use and benefit. You are responsible for safeguarding the password that you use to access the Site and Services. You agree not to disclose your password to any third party nor to permit any third party to use your Photobucket account.

You would need a password to enter my account ?

This is what I am trying to undestand, . .I will read over carefully what you have said and try to figure it out, . .then I will go to PB, and see if I can figure that out.

But please try to answer the last QUESTION;

would that be correct ?

Jp
Jp...... Why dont you go to the library and read some books about computers....... And NO there is no access from your photobucket account to your computer......... Why on earth would any one want to hack into your pc .......... it has so many issues they would probably never get out ....LOL

I have TROUBLE trying to follow along with some of your questions, but I'll see if I can give at least a few answers...

1. If your account is public, everyone has access to it. They can view, save, and use any pictures that are in your account. They can't make any changes to your account, though, of course.

2. If your account is private, then PEOPLE can't access your account. However, if you post a picture, people can then view, save, and use that one picture. This doesn't give them access to your other pictures, though.

3. On the other hand...if someone can successfully guess the name of one of your pictures, they will be able to view it. For example...

Without even going to your account, someone could guess that you have a ChickenLittle.jpg and they would get the above picture. Someone could guess that you have a NakedJP001.jpg in one of your private folders (you can have a public account, but make areas of it private). If they're wrong, nothing will happen (aside from an error page). If they're right...well, it wouldn't be pretty. And the 001 implies that there is a series of such pictures, so they could try looking for NakedJP002, NakedJP003, etc.

Keep in mind that isn't normally something you have to worry about. I mean, why would someone go through the effort? It's possible to access your private pictures, but there's a lot of hassle involved. However, if you have any pictures that you absolutely don't want people to see, don't give them obvious names.

4. Although you have some rights over some of the pictures in your account, this doesn't mean that other people aren't allowed to use them as they please. This may be different for private pictures (although PhotoBucket is allowed to do what they please with these pictures), but all public pictures are basically up for grabs. Perhaps you should read the license agreement from the Terms of Service:
Quote

Solve : Bill & Authentification?

Answer»

From other posts it has been stated that it is possible to retain an operating system (Xp-pro media center) on a hard drive (internal)and install Vista Premium on another HDD (removable) on a computer that is authorized to utilize both operating systems. However maybe i am being paranoid but is there going to be a problem (authentification denial/cancelation/etc.) of the Vista if it becomes part of the HDD chain on another computer? After all a major reason for an external is portability and interchangeability with other computers. Even though i would have no intention nor desire to use the "Vista" on the "other" computer it is still there to be seen. i have many reservations about going solo with Vista at this moment.I have not yet installed the Vista on the external due to my thinking about this issue. truenorthFirst, I don't know that Vista can be installed on a removable disk. Unless I see this notion supported by a reliable source, I'm not ready to believe it. And, if it could, it's not a good idea. You would surely encounter problems if you tried to use that OS installation with different computers. Unless the computers were identical, they would have different device drivers. And, I believe it would surely be a violation of the software license agreement and, as you've mentioned, cause problems with authentication, i.e. activation of Windows.

Silly statement. External hard drives have many benefits but they are not intended for OS installation. What exactly are you trying to accomplish here ? ?

p.s. Soybeans points are very valid.I suggest (with all do respect for the good work many of you do) that i is not productive to make presumptuios statements WITHOUT all the FACTS (Soybean "silly statement") + endorsed by patio it would appear.
If it had not been for the ability to put an operating system on a removable HDD it is most unlikely that i could have rejuvinated a computer that had become a collection of metal and plastic parts. Also i had to do so as the HDD (internal) was not partitioned and --ah welll suffice to say it was not silly and it did solve a problem that many on the forums had not been able to solve (even though it became the most read post on the "software" forum-which it still is today). So comeon fellows try to refrain from derogatory comments that do nothing to advance the topic. which by the way both soybean and patio have not addressed. as one travels through the journey of life one should be adaptable to the ideas of others even though they may differ from ones own perceptions. After many decades on this earth i have learned long ago that there are often many ways to accomplish the same objective. There are those on the forum, i have wittnessed ,whose sole solution to computer problems seems to be "remove and reinstall an O/S". While this is sometimes the only solution it is not always the only solution.
patio, what i am trying to accomplish here is the continued use of an o/S that works and i trust (Win xp-pro media center) and at the same time have available the newest O/S (Vista premium) which i don't know and at the moment don't trust (and it appears with good reason from the experience of many other Vista users not only on the CH forums). As was the case on the dead computer with no HDD partitioning this one also has just one huge unpartitioned HDD (mfgr. choice not mine) that obviously contains the XP-pro O/S . Now if i can load the Vista on the removeable HDD (without the concerns i have expressed) that will ALLOW me to use it and get to know it without the loss of something else until i decide if i want to use it or stay with XP.
Hows that --still sound "silly"??
As to the "i don't know that Vista can be installed on a removeable disk" here is the source for the statement i made that another forum member advanced when queried on that topic---

Yes its completely possible to have to OSs.
And yes its possible to install in on the removable hard drive. that's if that drive is large enough.
Only I don't know how you can do that.
I 'll follow this topic sow I learn how I can do that.

I do hope someone will now give me the benifit of their knowledge and opinion as to the concern that i have expressed in order that i may decide whether i should even attempt this and try to ignore any inner voice that wants to say something that doesn't advance the topic. As is my case there exists at least one other person on the forums that has an interest in knowing more about this possibility. truenorthWell, your posting of a reply from another forum doesn't lend much support to prove that Win Vista can be installed on an external drive, since he admitted he did not know how to do it.

Your last post portrays a somewhat different picture than your first post. In your last post, you seem to have dropped the idea of running Vista from an external drive on different computers. To run two OS on one computer, you really need a "dual boot" configuration. That can be done on a single, partitioned, hard drive or a system with two hard drives. Since your HD is not partitioned and you don't want to format the hard drive in order to use the standard Microsoft tools to partition your drive, you could obtain software such as Partition Magic that can partition a hard drive without formatting and erasing the drive.

The other approach would be to install a second hard drive. Then, you could install Vista on it and you would have a dual boot system, allowing you to choose which OS to boot during startup.

If your external hard drive is actually just an external enclosure with a standard IDE or SATA hard drive in it, you could remove that hard drive and install it in your computer as a second/slave drive. If the hard drive can not be removed from the enclosure, I think I'd buy another hard drive if possible, and keep your external HD for backup.Vista will only support a non-removeable drive for the system partition.

it's not a supported installation scenario.

And, there would really be no point in installing the system partition on an external drive, would there?

Reference: Definition of System Partition and Boot PartitionYou would also have to have a MBoard that supports booting to a USB device.
However if you do still want to dual-boot i would suggest another internal HDD.
This would solve the dilemna nicely and leave you with all that storage space on the external...patio,soybean,contrex, Thank you all for your input. Much to think about.
soybean, Just to clarify --nothing is different or changed from my 1st post. I would still want to use the Vista O/s on the "same" computer that the xp-pro media center O/S is on. It is a genuine external 250gb HDD not an internal in a case. I do not at the moment have any spare or extra HDD's kicking about. However this 250gb is available. It would be my intention as earlier stated to use this external between other computers in the household (but definetly not the Vista operating system other than on the computer it is authorized for --which coincidentally is the same one that has the media center O/S on it). However while i do not know how Microsoft accomplishes it's ability to validate it's O/S's i remain concerned that if this were doeable it would be there on a HDD to be detected on a computer for which it is 'not" authorized regardless of my intention not to use it on the "unauthorized" computer.Yes i am aware of the Symantec partition Magic software and i do believe it could allow a non destructive partition. However other than a version 5 (that is not useable -and not supported--which i paid good money for and have never used) i do not own that software. I don't see myself going that route as cost wise another internal HDD would be cheaper.
contrex, Not that i doubt your statement --but if true that would seem to be the end of my quest to go that route. I would only say that due to problems on another computer i was able to have win98se (upgrade) installed on "C" drive on the sole internal HDD (replacing a non functioning Xp-Pro) AND Win xp-pro (corporate) on another external HDD ( 3 partitions 1-fat,2 ntfs) on the "G" partition of the external. I have been using that configuration for about 2 weeks now and no problems so far. I do appreciate that Vista is not Xp-pro and therein may lie the problem. So it seems that a dual boot from not only separate partitions but indeed separate and even external HDD's is possible (unless i have invented something up to now deemed not possible --and i sincerely doubt that).thank you all again for your observations and comments, truenorthQuote from: truenorth on May 24, 2007, 06:37:23 PM

There's nothing inherently undoable about booting an OS from an external USB or firewire drive. Linux can be modified to do this fairly simply. See here for a discussion and some links.

See here for plenty more

The problem with Windows, especially Vista, is that Microsoft does not want you to do this.

From a paper, "Recommendations for Booting Windows from USB Storage Devices" published in 2004

Quote
Windows does not support USB hard disk drives as the primary boot device

http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/device/storage/usb-boot.mspx

They make it clear that while USB devices may be used for OS deployment and repair, using a USB device from which to run an OS is not going to be supported. If it were, it would might endanger Microsoft's whole licensing strategy, since XP, which depends on tying the OS fairly firmly to a specific identifiable hardware set. Also, I can see security issues. If you could carry a full OS around, you could just walk up to any PC with a USB 2.0 or Firewire port and boot the thing up off your USB pen drive or hard disk (unless the BIOS was hardened against this).

That having been said, it has been done, unofficially, up to and including XP. Vista may or may not be next...

This page shows how.

I was wondering about the same thing, as i did not want to put a Windows partition on my Linux.based work laptop, and thought it was a good idea to run Windows XP off a USB Hard drive that i just plug in when i need it, and boot from it. To put a long story short, this is exactly what i do now

You can easily get those PE disks, (Bart's PE, MiniPE, which modify the XP PE (Preinstall Environment) to form a ready made fully work ing XP bootable CD with network support, browser, disk tools such as Partition Magic, Ghost, etc, defraggers, and lots more. Well, this is a step up from those in terms of usability and functionality.

I wonder if one could install Linux on an external HD and then install VMWare and put Vista on that?

The man from Google he say YES!!!

Contrex, WOW. Such a great amount of information and the research that it must have entailed on your part. I am extremely grateful for all the time and effort that you have obviously put into helping me (and I’m sure others) with your information. Thank you. You may rest assured that I shall follow and read all of your links (though some sleep may have to be sacrificed).
I am a firm believer in the process of reading as many of the CH posts on computer issues that I can as it most certainly adds to ones knowledge and skills pertaining to the utilization of computers.
I must now correct some misinformation that I gave on this post (unintentional). However as others may also be reading this post and perhaps contemplating some actions based on the information I have provided. I am currently working (others might describe it with a different verb) with 7 computers –4 very actively. I have represented that I have successfully installed and am using an O/S (win XP-pro corporate) on a removable HDD. This is false. It is dual booted on the same computer as the win98se (a Sony Vaio). It is indeed on “G” drive. However it is on the 3rd of 3 partitions of the same internal HDD (NTFS). I also do have a “G” drive on an external 250 GB HDD (also NTFS) and erroneously believed it was on that external that I had installed the XP-pro.
However from what I do gather from just your last post on the topic “things are possible” to achieve certain situations re installation of O/S’s on external HDD. (I note your limitation emphasis on Vista) . Yes it was the aspect of “carrying it about “ to other computers that gave rise to my concern, which started my post on the subject. While I had and have no intention to use it interchangeably on other computers (non-authorized) perhaps there might be one person out there that might be inclined to do that . So I do appreciate the concern of Bill and his subordinates in that regard. Though I must say a similar concern does not seem to flow from them to us. As an example most new computers sold today (not tailor made ones) do NOT include a CD-r of the operating system. At best it is a “restore/recovery” utility—which I don’t believe can be used as a reinstall when a HDD, etc is lost. That is exactly our case with my wife’s recent purchase of the Cisnet computer that I wanted to do this project with. Also again typical the Cisnet came with the O/S (XP-pro media center ) preinstalled as well as other software on the one honking 120gb HDD with no partitions other than “C” on it. Without an O/S CD it is not possible (even if one were so inclined) to reformat and partition the Cisnet HDD without some 3rd party (Partion Magic, etc.) software. To try it without such a tool would be destructive I believe. So it would be nice if the mfgrs. And Microsoft would include a greater degree of concern for the great unwashed that use their products and not constrain us so much. Thanks again. truenorth

Many companies here in the UK have a "no pen drive" policy, staff forbidden them and VISITORS having to give them up, BIOSes systematically passworded (this is often overlooked) and set to disallow USB or CD-ROM booting. Unauthorised data transfer to a USB device is bad enough, but if you boot from an external drive, you can browse and copy and leave no traces.

But, if he installed Windows on an external drive and then tried booting it from a different computer from the one from which he installed it, he's likely to encounter some problems. Don't you agree?

If he wants to be able to browse the web on someone else's computer without leaving a trail, I'd recommend just installing the portable version of Firefox on a flash drive. Quote

Another option is M-Audio's Session.

As for CONVERTING .nib files to work on Windows...well, that's unfamiliar territory for me.

Solve : MS Office Word 2003?

Answer»

Hi, guys,
I'm wondering whether you've encountered the same problem as me. I am a regular MS Office 2003 user. However, 2 days ago when I opened my file that it have an error message. The message said Microsoft Visual Basic Run-time error '9'? - Subscript out of range. What's that? (I don't have visual basic installed on my PC, unless that's some system language written by Microsoft) Then I tried to open other word documents, still the same!

BTW, when I CHOOSE to end that message it works fine. I can still review and make changes to my document, but it is kind of annoying...

Can anyone help me here?

Many Thanks,
DiDiIt sounds like the Office application is set up to run a custom macro, written in Visual Basic For Applications, ("VBA"), which, as you correctly GUESSED is used by Microsoft as a system language for Office. That macro is halting because a "subscript is out of range", that is, probably, an attempt is being made to access or refer to some data that does not exist, such as the 11th row in a table with only 10 rows, or in Excel, a non existent cell.

These macros are often included in start up actions for Excel spreadsheets, which confuses me because your title for this thread explicitly mentions Word. If you meant Word, maybe a reference to a linked spreadsheet is failing because the spreadsheet has been edited or deleted or in some way differs from its previous state.

The Microsoft help for this problem here is all about Excel

Thanks contrex,
I READ the article you suggested but have no ideas what so ever (i am no good with visual basic software)... I tried to use the repair function in MS Word but still not working.. I guess the only way to solve this is to re-install the softward!

Cheers! Not necessarily. Find Normal.dot and delete or rename it. Then, restart Word and see whether the error message has stopped.

Thanks soybean,
I followed the procedure you (and the website) suggests and still the same. Maybe it will be quicker if I re-install the MS Office again.....

thanks again! Yes, you might as well go ahead with uninstalling and reinstalling Office. If you changed any settings, modified toolbars, etc. from the defaults, you lose them because they'll be restored to defaults. And, if you had gotten any online updates to Office, you'll need to repeat that as needed. If you did not have the SP2 (Service Pack 2) update for Office, I suggest you install it SOMETIME after reinstalling Office.

Solve : Delete or Disable Cookies??

Answer»

What is the difference between deleting cookies and DISABLING cookies? As I understood it, if you delete cookies, they are automatically restored when you start up your computer again. sisdroid ... Lets start with what a cookie is.........

A SMALL text file of INFORMATION that certain Web sites attach to a user's hard drive while the user is browsing the Web site. A Cookie can contain information such as user ID, user preferences, archive shopping cart information.

If you disable cookies ........ you are telling your browser not to accept cookies from any site. ( this is not a good idea as some sites won't be available to you if you have cookies DISABLED.)

If you delete cookies .......... any cookies which have been placed on your machine will be deleted until you visit the site again. Simply restarting your machine will not replace cookies which have been deleted.

Hope this HELPS you.

In paint, go to File - Save As - and under where you input the name, change it from *.bmp to jpeg settings and save it. This will REDUCE the size. And, if you want to reduce the dimensions of the image, go to Image, Stretch/Skew (in Paint) and enter some figure less than 100 in Horizontal and Vertical boxes.Ok Thanks I'll try it when I"m home.
But does someone has an answer for my question?Have you tried this? highlight the shortcut, hold down the shift key, and press delete.
If that doesn't work, and it is actually located on the E: drive, search the E: drive for shortcuts and delete it there.I've already tried shift delete and I can't find any shortcut on the E: drive.

Jonas The option to make a folder private (Level 1) is only available to a user account in its own My Documents folder.

To configure a folder and all the files in it to Level 1, follow these steps:

1.Right-click the folder, and then click Sharing and Security.

2.Select the Make this Folder Private check box, and then click OK.

Network Share Permissions:

Solve : Creating a rule that selects default sending address when replying in Outlook??

Answer»

I have a SOMEWHAT complicated question to fix an issue that is more of an annoyance than a serious problem. Let me start off by explaining my scenario. I have two email addresses: a university address and a gmail address. The storage on my university address is only 5 MB so I set up gmail's POP3 feature to automatically download my messages and delete them from the university server.

Now here is the problem. I like to use Outlook 2003 on my home computer to manage my email. When I had Outlook checking both accounts separately (before my university email was wired through my gmail INBOX), both email accounts would download to the same Outlook inbox, but if I replied to a message it would send from the email address it was originally sent to (e.g., if a professor sent a message to my university account and I wanted to REPLY, the message would automatically send from my university email address rather than my gmail address without me having to select it). Now that all of my email is being downloaded from my gmail inbox, all messages I reply to default as sent from my gmail address no matter which of my email addresses it was originally sent to.

I had an idea to fix the problem but am having a bit of trouble. I wanted to create a rule that if email was sent TO my university address, then when I try to reply I will be sending FROM my university address by default. However, I don't think such a feature is built into Outlook's rules.

Any suggestions? Thank you!I'm getting a kind of contradiction, or some confusion, here. In your first paragraph, you state that 5MB limitation of the university caused you to set up the Gmail account. But, in your second paragraph, you indicate you were, at one time, using Outlook directly for university mail. This would mean the 5MB limitation was not really a problem. Please clarify. Why did you feel you had to stop using Outlook directly for university mail?I love to use Outlook at home, and if I only checked my email at home I would not need the gmail account as I could just have outlook download my messages and delete them from the university server in the process. However, I often check my email at school and work among other places. To do this, I need to have my messages stored on a web-based email service. Does this help clear things up?Yes, that makes it clear. I don't know that a rule can be used this way. But, do you have your university mail account set up in Outlook in your home computer? If not, why not create that account and then use it as the sending account when you reply? This would achieve the OBJECTIVE, although it does not make it automatic. With multiple email accounts in Outlook, one will be default for sending but this can be changed by clicking on the Accounts button and SELECTING the desired account for a new message or reply. Here's an image to illustrate:

Does that help?Right, I knew about the accounts button. I was just wondering about a way to make it automatic, because at first glance I don't always know which account each email was sent to so I don't know which to reply from.

Nonetheless, I think I figured out a solution. I changed gmail so it does not delete the messages off my university server. Then, I changed Outlook so it still downloads from the university server, but it deletes the email after 1 day (giving gmail more than enough time to download it before it gets deleted). This then results in a duplicate of every message sent to my university email address in my Outlook inbox (one from the university server and one from the gmail server) so I created a rule that applies only to emails downloaded off gmail and permanently deletes any messages sent to my university address. I haven't received an email to my university address yet to test it out, but logically it seems like it should work.

Thanks for the help anyway!

I cannot see how that command send an image to the CD BURNER. Even as old as I am the DOS prompt is still an inigma to me. I guess I started too late in life.

Solve : word document recovery?

Answer»

When closing an important word document (what was once 47 pages is now only 39) i accidently clicked the 'no' option on doy uowant to save?
when i did that, apparently word also deleted all the backup copies of my file as well. For some stupid REASON i hadnt saved since three oclock. How do i get BACK a version of my file autosaved (it does it after every ten minutes and creates a file, and its now deleted the file, so presumably i must be able to get it back somehow) as recently as possible?

And also, why didn't microsoft plan for this? why make it so that if you ACCIDENTALLY click the WORNG option, it destroys all your work completely, instead of keeping the auto-saved file until it's sure you didnt want it? What kind of morons do they employ??

i am very much upset by this. ive been crying. Please help urgently! it had to be finished for tomorrow!! i cant write it all again! There were diagrams!! HELP!!Sorry. No sympathy. You "accidentally" clicked "no". What you seem to be asking is "Why don't Microsoft write software that reads your mind and does what you really meant to do instead of what you actually told it to do?"

When Word asks if you want to save the file, it is asking if you really want it. I don't think the morons are at Microsoft...

I suppose they could have a "blonde" setting where the save dialog asks, "Are you sure", and "Are you really sure?", and "Are your really really sure?" etc but then you'd still get ditzoids saying "I accidentally clicked "no" six times! Those morons at Microsoft!"

This post made me chortle, so I'll respond.
contrex, do you have to be so negative?
pissedoffteen - Are you sure the backup ones are gone?
Go to Tools --> Folder options in Windows Explorer, and select "Show hidden Files".
Go to the folder the word document was in, and see if anything else shows up.
If not, try Recuva and see if that can recover the files.
In the meantime, try to limit writing to the HDD, as in doing anything with the PC, to maximize the chances of recovering it.absolutely sure. Hidden files are always shown anyway. It made a new backup file about five seconds after i reopened the file, but it didn't have anything new in it. i suppose its a mercy i didnt lose the whole thing.
i'll try recuva, thanks.
As to the other guy, what i meant was that it is perfectly possible to press the wrong button. I'll admit that in my entire life this is the first time its happened to me, but still: it keeps backup files if you exit without saving in other ways, why not assume that sooner or LATER people will accidentally click the worng button? it kind of defeats the point of backup files if you delete them doesnt it?
And im a little worn down...lots of coffee and three days of solid revision and courseowkr, stopping only to sleep (not even stopping while eating) takes it out of you. i was at the end of my tether. then it snapped.ow. elastic bandy tether. Give it a go, it may not help but it's worth a shot.
pissedoffteen, I'm in the same situation, exams coming up etc, really takes it out of you.
Get some sleep, it's worth it in the long run even if you feel it wastes too much time.
Otherwise you just end up wasting time trying to revise because you can't concentrate.Recuva didnt really help...but thanks anyway. it'll help next time i thoughtlessly delete something. just not when microsoft does it for me, apparently.

it seems to have overwritten it rather than deleted it. hmm. Well, it was worth a shot.
Just think twice before clicking anything, and save every 5 minutes, especially when working on something important.
I've had the same thing happen to me before and it is annoying, but it just made me resolve to double check before clicking anything and to be certain I saved often. For future essays/papers, you may want to consider using something like KeyNote. It's a tabbed program that saves your work as you TYPE. It's not the prettiest program, but it sure is handy.

Solve : How to reassign what program my digital camera opens with??

Answer»

I just bought my daughter a used digital camera (FUJI) and after installing the software, I connected the camera to the PC. SINCE it was the first time connecting it, the box popped up asking me how I wanted to OPEN it, so I figured I'd try to see if the software for my camera (Canon) would work (it didn't). Anyway, the problem is I accidentally clicked the "always use this option" when I connected it the first time, so now it does it AUTOMATICALLY which MEANS the only way to access pics from the camera now is to open it as an external drive and take them out one at a time. Is there any way to reassign what program the camera opens with?roccenstein ....Have you tried uninstalling the camera as well as the camera software . Rebooting the machine, then reinstall the camera software ....and then connect the camera....hopefully you will get the open with option again.

mattThere are no guarantees in bittorrent...

I would scan your machine for baddies. You shouldn't be downloading warez if you don't know what you're doing. simshi993052 ........ Have a look at this......
http://www.jakeludington.com/ask_jake/20070423_how_to_play_torrent_bittorrent_files.html
I don't use torrents, but this is how to play then.

dl65

It's obvious you do not use torrents as 'torrents' are not media files. They are files that tell the BT client where to get the files.

Anything that comes from BitTorrent comes from Newsgroups or FTPs.

Like I said before; if you don't know what to do with the warez once you download them, you're not supposed to be getting them in the first place. MUCH like buying a car and not knowing how to drive it..

Anyhow, for future reference: the guy needs codecs. DivX most likely. Yeah i got the answer all you got to do is copy the bit file onto a 2 disc cd and play it on the windows media player i think that should work for you unless you got an old model like the school computers

Solve : PC boot up gone all strange?

Answer»

The PC crashed, only way to sort it out after leaving for about 20mins was to remove the power supply.
Now on reboot, after the initial manufacturers screen it comes up with the following

Diskette drive 0 seek failure

Press F1 to CONTINUE, F2 to enter setup

In F2 the set up is Sata 0 recognises the hard disk.
Also in Setup have tried 1st BOOT as HD and 2nd boot CDROM and the other way round.

If you press F1 the PC boots up ok to the users page.
Any reason why the PC will not boot as per normal.

Thanks.
Diskette is more commonly referred to as a floppy drive.

In your BIOS, disable your floppy drive and the problem should go away. What version of Windows ?
Do you have a Windows CD of that verssion ?
What happened prior to the crash ?Using WIN Vista Home premium.
Supposedly my son was doing homework either on Word or Publisher then it all froze. Left it for about 20mins could not reboot or BRING up task manager so only option was to pull the plug.
Do not have a full OS disk.Download Windows Recovery Console: http://www.thecomputerparamedic.com/files/rc.iso
Download, and install free Imgburn: http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download
Using Imgburn, BURN rc.iso to a CD.
Boot to the CD...let it finish loading.
When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
Then, follow the steps from here: http://icrontic.com/articles/repair_windows_xp, starting below this picture on page 1:

Please read my MESSAGE and do not reply me that "windows 7 is still beta and run it in compability mode and bla bla bla" I just want to know how to successfully install it and Remember compability mode does not work for me

Sorry for my bad EnglishWindows 7 is a BETA...as such there are many devices/Programs that are yet to be compatible with it...this is normal.

Solve : How reliable is microsft word created date on a document??

Answer»

I am in a battle with our association. I own a condo in florida and shortly after buying it the board changed the rental rule. They did so without 2 week notice to owners so we were unable to speak. The board president is what we call a dictator(his way or take highway). We had a hearing and he and one other PERSON stated that they gave the 2 week notice sent out and posted on Sept 6. I was able to examine the COMPUTER records and microsoft word shows the created date as being Sept 16. How reliable is this?
My wife and I have been MADE out to be liars by him. Your help is appreciated. Thanks in advanceAs long as the system Date/Time was not changed on the machine it was created on the timestamp is accurate...
This however can be done FAIRLY easily...I have always wondered about this....because if it was re-saved somewhere new on a particular date, wouldn't the windows time stamp change, because that particular document was made at a different date?Quote from: Kurtiskain on January 20, 2009, 06:20:51 PM

I have always wondered about this....because if it was re-saved somewhere new on a particular date, wouldn't the windows time stamp change, because that particular document was made at a different date?
The time stamp changes if it was an actual timestamp... if you just put the date in, say:
01/20/2009
It WONT change itself, you have to put a timestamp in specifically.
