Find the equation of the plane with intercept 3 on the y-axis and parallel to ZOX plane.

Answer»

Equation of ZOX plane is y = 0

Direction ratio of normal to this plane is (0,1,0)

since the required plane is parallel to y = 0

Direction ratio of its normal is also (0,1,0). Intercepts on y-axis is 3,

∴ The point (0, 3, 0) lies on the plane.

∴ equation of plane

(x – 0) + 1 (y – 3) + 0 (z – 0) = 0

∴ y = 3.

14060.

Write the intercept cut-off by plane 2x + y - z = 5 on X-axis.

Answer»

Given equation of plane is 2x + y - z = 5.

On dividing both sides by 5, we get

2x/5 + y/5 - z/5 = 1

on comparing above equation of plane with the intercept form of equation of plane.

x/a + y/b + z/c = 1

where, a = x-intercept, b = y-intercept and c = z-intercept.

we get, a = 5/2

i.e., intercept cut off on X-axis = 5/2.

14061.

Find the equation of the plane with intercept 3 on the y-axis and parallel to ZOX plane.

Answer»

The equation of the plane ZOX is y = 0

Any plane parallel to it is of the form, y = a

Since the y-intercept of the plane is 3, a = 3

 Thus, the equation of the required plane is y = 3

14062.

(i) Find the equation of the Plane with intercepts 2, 3, 4 on X, Y, Z axes respectively.) (ii) Find the distance of the point (- 1, – 2,3) from the Plane \(\bar{r}\) (2i – 3 j + 4k) = 4

Answer»

(i) The equation of the plane is

\(\frac{x}{2}+\frac{y}{3}+\frac{z}{4} = 1\)

(ii) The equation of the plane is 2x – 3y + 4z = 4

Hence the distance = \(\frac{2(-1)-3(-2)+4(3)-4}{\sqrt{4+9+16}}\)

\( = \frac{-2+6+12-4}{\sqrt{4+9+16}}\)

\(\frac{12}{\sqrt{29}}\)

Show that the line joining the origin to the point (2, 1, 1) is perpendicular to the line determined by the points (3, 5, −1), (4, 3, −1).

Answer»

Let OA be the line joining the origin, O (0, 0, 0), and the point, A (2, 1, 1).
Also, let BC be the line joining the points, B (3, 5, −1) and C (4, 3, −1).
The direction ratios of OA are 2, 1, and 1 and of BC are (4 − 3) = 1, (3 − 5) = −2, and
(−1 + 1) = 0
OA is perpendicular to BC, if a1a2 + b1b2 + c1c2 = 0
a1a2 + b1b2 + c1c2 = 2 × 1 + 1 (−2) + 1 ×0 = 2 − 2 = 0
Thus, OA is perpendicular to BC.

If x = a cos θ, y = b sin θ, then find dy/dx.

Answer»

According to question, x = a cos θ ...(i)

y = b sin θ...(ii)

Equation (i) differentiating w.r.t., θ

dx/dθ = ad cosθ/dθ

= a x (-sin θ) = -a sin θ

Then eq. (ii) differentiating w.r.t θ

dy/dθ = bd sinθ/dθ = b cosθ

Hence, dy/dx = dy/dθ/dx/dθ = b cosθ/-a sinθ

= (b/-a) cot θ

14074.

Critical Angle for light moving from medium I to medium 2 is θ. The speed of light in medium II is v then the speed in medium 2 is A) v (1-cosθ) B) v/sinθ C) v/cosθ D) v (1- sinθ)

Answer»

The correct option is B) v/sinθ.

From Snell's Law:

nsini = n sinr..................... (i)

Where n1 =Refractive index of first medium

Refractive index of second medium

I = angle of incidence

r = angle of refraction

For critical angle:

Angle of incidence = i = θ

Angle of refraction = r = 90°

By substituting in equation 1 we get:

nsinθ = nsin90°

nsin θ = n x 1 Sinθ = n/n.................... (ii)

But as we already know the equation= n = c/V

Where n inversely proportional to V

If v and v2 are the speeds of first medium and second medium then :

n/n= v/v2.............. (iii)

By equation ii and iii we get,

Sinθ = v/v2

v2sinθ = V

⇒ v2 = V/sinθ

Zamindars made some plans to save their zamindaris from being lost by auctions. Evaluate this statement.

Answer»

Zamindars used a technique called ‘false sale’. It was a technique they used in the transfer and sale of the zamindaris.

For example, a Raja in Bardwan, transferred some of his zamidaris to his mother Zamindaris in the name of women were not to be confiscated for auction.

Sometimes zamindars used their agents when their zamindaris were auctioned. When their zamindaris were auctioned because of non-payment of taxes in time, the agents of the zamindar took part in the auction and offered the highest bids winning the zamindaris. But they would not pay. Again the zamindaris would be offered for auction. The Zamindars would again send their agents and this way the process would go on endlessly. The government and the others taking part in the auction would be tired at the end, and the government will be forced to give the lands back to the original zamindar for a small price. Such false auctions were rampant.

Zamindars also used force to prevent the transfer of their lands. If outsiders tried to get into the zamindaris, the zamindars would use goondas to prevent them from occupying the land. Sometimes farmers themselves prevented outsiders from entering their land. There were many farmers who were loyal to their zamindars. They considered themselves as the loyal subjects of the zamindar. The sale of the land by auction would wound their self-respect and so they tried to prevent outsiders from coming there by using all kinds of means.
