Solve : Trouble with my Samsung 1710?

Answer»

by lisashomeoffice - March 21, 2011 3:04 AM PDT

Hello,
I bought a Samsung 1710 new in 2003 and have never had more than a paper jam until this week. My printer will not work at all. I have re-installed the driver many times. I have gone through the PROCESS of shutting down the PC, unplugging the printer, the USB,& the power. I have done that many times. Whenever, I try to print a page the little printer shows up in the notification area and nothing happens. I then proceed to open the printer and have the docs purged. I have done all of these things over and over again. I still can't get the THING going. I did a test print and it comes out fine. Can anyone clue me in on what I can do albeit buy a new printer?

Thank You in advance.

Solve : Copying a DVR?

Answer»

How do I copy a movie or TV program recorded on my cable boxe's DVR to my PC? If this is illegal I will not go any further. However I often take my COMPUTER on BUSINESS trips and it make the time pass if I can watch things I have recorded.

Thanks,
PeterLook in the Use Guide for the DVR. It may have a way to send files to the PC. If not, yu need and adapter to take OUTPUT from DVR to PC.
Here is a helpful reference article.
Record TV on your PC
But after that article was written, some NEWER gadgets have come out. Here is a video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e0Bw_WZDLkw
If you were able to connect it to a PC you would know from the manual or user guide. I have a DVR with a hard drive, and the only way I could get the programs onto a PC would be if I physically opened up the DVR case and removed the hard drive. Then I would have to use a caddy or USB adapter and copy the recordings (which are in MPG format) to the PC.

Solve : What temperature are safe with core temp??

Answer»

I have no REAL IDEA what a safe temperature is for a CPU. I have read that different software reads different hardware configurations... differently. I have seen a few other posts from people worrying about 45 degree temperatures so I thought I should ask about the readings that I am getting. HOPEFULLY all the information you need is on the picture. (And hopefully the picture loads, I'm new to this.)

[recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]Every CPU is different...check AMD's site for the temp ranges for that chip...The AMD specs for the Phenom II 955 BE list the maximum temperature as 62 degrees C. Since it appears that onyxlibrarian's idling temperature is around 51 C (3% cpu load is idling) then he/she is running rather hot. There is only 11 degrees headroom. My Phenom II 945 has a similar power consumption and max temp. Mine idles at around 25 C and even on full load it gets up to around 40 - 42 C. I have AMD Cool 'n' Quiet enabled. In my opinion better cooling is needed. If this is a self or custom build then I would be inclined to check that the cpu/heatsink assembly has sufficient thermal transfer compound PROPERLY applied and that the fan speed is adequate.

Solve : Bad HW question?

Answer»

Recently my computer has been acting a bit off ("a bit" is an understatement I guess), BSOD's, program crashes, things like that.

I'm pretty sure I've narrowed the suspects down to three main suspects, the CPU, the RAM or the MOBO (tho other components might possibly be orchestrating this). Could you help me confirm that, and perhaps even narrow it down even further?

The crashes(BSODs) started with big .mkv files, mainly 720p movies (2-4 gigs) and sometimes even shows (0.5-1.5 gigs), they crashed the computer about 2-5 minutes of watching. I figured it might be the new 1.5 TB HDD (5200rpm, unlike my other HDDs) so I unplugged it, and the .mkv BSODs stopped after that (even after i replugged the HDD). This was like 1.5 weeks ago.

The .dmp files (which I don't have, sorry) pointed to files like hal.dll and ntoskrnl.exe (I used a .dmp analyzing utility). There were quite a few different error CODES. i remember seeing things IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL and codes like 0x000c2. Basically it points to HW failure. Some of the BSODs induced CMOS settings reset. (or is it BIOS settings reset? Anyways I saw the word CMOS).

At the time my .mkv crashes stopped i started noticing games acting up (I only tried two, Dragon Age 2 and WoW). DA2 started to lock up at random intervals (I found out that pressing ctrl+alt+del or ctrl+alt+esc didn't fix it quickly, but pressing the windows KEY stopped the lock-up instantly, if that matters). WoW started crashing (albeit less frequently than the DA2 lockups) and giving me ERRORS about "Instruction at memory "0xSomeMemory" illegally referenced memory at "0xSameMemoryLocation"". (don't remember the exact locations or the exact wording of the error)

I turned off the computer last night and it was okay. Now when I turn it on the screen doesn't get any signal, and my BIOS settings (CMOS settings?) seem to have reset once again (the CPU fan goes full speed, which means the speed limit I lowered has gone back to default or my CPU is overheating extremely in less than a second(not possible I guess)).

From this I deduced my CUP/RAM/MOBO theory, can you enlighten me more?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. And yeah. I don't have the exact computer spec with me EITHER buuuuuut:

MOBO: MSI p45 neo-f
GPU: Nvidia 9800 gt 1gb
CPU: Intel quad core 2.33ghz
RAM: 4gb (kingston, i think)

Plus, now im thinking it might be GPU failure?

Solve : Upgrade HDD from SATA 2.0 to SATA 3.0 connectors ??

Answer»

Okay, so my question is what complications, if any, will I have if I recently realized that my mobo has SATA 6Gbps support and I have my two HDDs in RAID-0 plugged into the older SATA 3 Gbps slots and I wanted to unplug them and hook them up to the newer and better SATA 3.0s? I wanted to make sure I wouldn't have any catastrophic problems when trying to switch the connectors.

Will I just have to go into the BIOS and change something first or will it work automatically? Thanks in advance. SATA 6Gbps ports might not support RAID-0. Why WOULD you need or WANT RAID-0 with SATA 6Gbps or 3Gbps?I know it supports it because it says it does on the website. I know it's mostly marketing but it says "SATA 3.0 up to 4x speed via RAID 0." I already have them in RAID 0 just hooked up to the 2.0 ports. I don't really NEED RAID 0 but I was able to get a second drive for really cheap and RAID 0 makes two drives into one whilst giving a slight performance boost.

So my thought process is why not plug them into the faster ports and see if Gigabyte's marketing team is just really good or if I do get a faster read/write speed. The problem with RAID-0 is it doubles the CHANCES of losing the computer. If you lose either hard drive, it won't boot. RAID-1 is a much better option. As for RAID-0 performance, it may be measureable but you will never notice any difference. Plug them into the other ports & see what happens, shouldn't hurt anything. I assume the drives are SATA 3.0?Yea, they are. I do have an external drive backing up all of it THOUGH.

I'll try later, thanks.

Solve : Building A Media Center?

Answer»

I have accumulated enough parts to put together a media center for my 46" television. I am questioning my graphics card. I am going to be mostly watching movies and television through Netflix and Hulu. The card I am planning to use is a Nvidia 9600GT.

BIOSTAR V9603GT52 GeForce 9600 GT 512MB 256-bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 X16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card

My television is a Samsung 120Hz 46" LCD. I can provide more INFORMATION on the television if needed.

I also might want to play a little WOW.Your graphics card is very good. I disagree...I understand that this is a mid range graphics card. I am just concerned it is not going to give me the performance I want on a 46" LCD television. I have looked at some of the media centers that are sold prepackaged and the graphics cards do not look like they are anything special. I think some of them advertised on board graphics.

I do not mind investing in a different card if I need to.You want a video card with HDMI output to the TV which surely must have HDMI INPUTS. Few TV's have DVI ports.

The card you have specified has S-Video out, which is composite, not component video, therefore it is analog, not digital.
I do have a Power Color ATI5450 1GB DDR3 that does have a HDMI port. I was actually going to get an adapter to GO from DVI to HMDI for the 9600 card. You may find it on Google.

Solve : unfamiliar post screen, no keyboard detected lol?

Answer»

i had RECENTLY built a new computer. after installing windows 7 everything was fine, except for during post it'd say 'no keyboard deteced'. which it wasn't detecting it because i couldnt acess bios during this. once i came to the windows log in screen, it was then reading the keyboard.

a few days ago i had a power outage during a thunderstorm and now a screen appears when turning on my computer giving me 2 options somehwat like 'continue start up' and 'enter a set up'. these are extremely general ideas of what it says but its not the usual 'start windows normally' screen. i would look but i'm currently at work since i cannot access the internet at home lol.

the problem with this screen appearing is that since it is not detecting my keyboard at post, i have no where else to go. i've tried every usb port, as well as a ps/2 keyboard.

i either a. need to figure out how to get PAST this screen or not have it appear at all or b. figure out how to get it to detect my keyboard.

if you have any suggestions or info i'd highly appreciate the help.

thanks.TRY another keyboard...PS2 if POSSIBLE.i mentioned that i did. someone from another site suggested doing a cmos restart. i tried that last night and got nothing. unless i did it wrong lol. if thats possible. unplugged power, popped out the battery, waited 30 min, popped it back in.If you recently made changes or added any hardware, try removing it and to other external devices with keyboard only hooked up. You could also try reseating all hardware components(RAM, Cards, cable/power CONNECTIONS)

Solve : Laptop LCD Screen is dark.?

Answer»

Hello,
I have "Packard Bell - qua-k1" laptop. I have problem with my LCD Screen which is dark, when I turn on laptop. What do you THINK, it is a LCD Screen problem? If I change laptop LCD, then will be working preferably, or it is other problem?
THANK you!Perhaps cable is a problem?Based on what you've told us there is no way to diagnose the problem on a forum. The best anyone can do is guess. Then the best way is take my laptop to repair centre?Either that or provide a lot more INFORMATION for us to work withWhen you close the cover, is it a button or a captor inside the screen that makes the screen blank? When I turn on laptop my lcd screen is dark, but I can see a bit picture.. I can read... but is to dark.If you have a light DETECTOR on your pc (for light regulating), maybe that means that the detector don't work. Quote from: Allan on March 20, 2011, 02:29:17 PM

Either that or provide a lot more information for us to work with

Is the laptop new?

Has it ever worked properly?

Have you changed the settings?

Have you installed anything that might have changed the settings? games, video software

etc, etc, etcLaptop is used
Had worked properly
Nothing changed
I REINSTALL windows xp that's allDid you re-install the drivers from the laptop manuf. ? ?Yeah, but when laptop had old xp then I had same problem with LCD... Quote

Try changing your backlight brightness on your laptop. You do this by pressing the FN key and the key that looks like it has a sun on it (usually the arrow keys).

It is also possible that your backlight has burn't out.No, It's not working. But I can see little bit.. hmmm maybe anything I can try change in Bios? Quote from: edzha90 on March 29, 2011, 03:50:40 PM

Solve : Best way to clean and lower laptop temp without voiding warranty??

Answer»

Hello again everyone!

This is sort of related to hardware... Recently I noticed my laptop has been running warmer then usual 56-60 Celsius when under NORMAL use. The system gets much hotter if I run a game which sometimes I do..

Anyways, I installed Prime95 and ran a stress test and here is something that happen within 5 minutes of full CPU usage. I stopped it after 5 min fearing it will hit its safe mark.

I don't think the temp is safe at all, in fact I think it was reaching its limit..

I never had to use a laptop cooler before and under stress before the hottest it got was 70 Celsius.. now when I ran a stress test.. see image

I took air can and blew the vents and puff of smoke came out through the sides and under the computer where it vents. I would try to take the laptop apart so I can try to see if the motherboard is covered with dust, but the computer is under warranty and I don't want to void it by opening it up.. Anyone know any good ways to cool or clean a laptop without hopefully having to buy a laptop cooler.. I have never seen temps this crazy before!

I thought this laptop looked pretty well built but apparently having 1 fan on it is not enough.. Its a Toshiba A665 series, not the 3D VERSION. I still have a warranty on it and technically nothing is broken and I hope nothing EVER breaks on this laptop. I never had to use a laptop warranty before and hopefully never, but anyone have any recommendations to help cool this computer down a bit? I already tried compress air on the vents and it dropped the idle temp by some... but under load it seems to be dangerously hot.

The system is running at factory settings.. nothing has been changed other then adding a bios and HARD drive password.

[recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]External cooler fan may help and there are many you can choose from.

Solve : Should a CPU's fan spin even with a dead graphics card/no graphics card??

Answer»

Oddball question I know, but I can't find an answer to this specific question and now I'm paranoid that I may have somehow borked my PC worse than it was before.  I'll give as detailed of an account as possible, so please don't mind the length.  Here's what happened;

So my GeForce 8800 GTX's fan was making a horrible buzzing sound and every time I tried to run a game, even something graphics-light like Torchlight, the card's temp would jump up to a terrifying 77+ degrees. Since the REST of the computer was running nice and cool and because of the fan's noise I figured it must be the card's fan. Cleaned it, installed it back in, same thing was happening. Took it out, decided to unscrew the fan to give it a really good cleaning...and managed to get a SCREW stuck inside the card. Stupidity on my part, but doesn't change the fact that now my 8800 GTX is pretty much dead.

Then I remembered that I use to have an 8600. Asked a family member where she put it. Found it...inside a box...without anything covering it. Can't blame her, she doesn't understand computers all that much, but taking into account where it was left and that she probably didn't handle it properly it was dubious at best that it would work. Still, I figured "what do I got to lose?" and installed the thing. Turned on the computer. Mobo lights up, but no boot-up beep. Black screen. Card's fan wasn't running at all. Sigh.

And that's when I noticed that the CPU's heatsink wasn't spinning either.

Now for all I know this is what is suppose to happen, that without a graphics card the mobo doesn't start the boot sequence at all.  But I can't help but shake the feeling that now the CPU is screwed up as well.  This may be a simple question for you all to answer, but I would like to know sooner than later whether or not I'm going to have to buy a new CPU as well as a graphics card.  Also, as I understand it, most mobos give "warning beeps" when it is missing a particular piece of hardware/has bad hardware.  But the mobo doesn't make any sort of beep at all, at least not within the time frame I let it stay on (maybe a minute or two).  Here's a break down of what happens now when I turned on the computer;

-Mobo lights up, case fans spin, but there is no boot beep and the little boot code on the bottom right just displays a "- -"
-CPU heatsink fan doesn't spin
-With graphics card installed, I only get a black screen and the fan doesn't spin

And here are my specs:
OS: Windows 7 32-bit
CPU: INTEL Quad-core 2.66
Memory: OCZ Gold 4 Gigs
Mobo: nForce 680i SLI
PSU: BFG 850W
Graphics: Dead

Will provide more info if needed. Again, may be a simple "yes' or "no" answer, just would really like to know. Thanks in advance.

Do you have onboard graphics?

Does the 8800 GTX still work even though the fan is stuck? If so, then you know your mobo and CPU are OK. Quote from: Linux711 on March 28, 2011, 10:30:54 AM

No onboard graphics.

The 8800 GTX was still working. When the PC was IDLING the temp was acceptable. It was when I started to run something graphics intensive, like a video game, that the fan would make an awful noise and the temp jumped up to above 75 degrees. This was before I managed to kill the card via my own dumb luck.

Good to hear that my mobo and CPU are probably fine. I'm just hoping that inserting the dead graphics card didn't somehow kill something else. Unlikely, but stranger things have happened with PCs. Ok, now that I've spent a little bit more time with the PC today I found the problem. Kinda simple really. It was a grounding issue.

When I installed the 8600, I must have pushed the board in a little too much. Mobo was shorting out and hence the reason it wasn't posting and giving me a "- -" error message with no beeps. I readjusted the board and now everything turns on fine.

Leave it to me to consider the worse possible scenario. Sorry for using up forum space.

Solve : Laptop Screen and Hard Drive?

Answer»

Hey. I have two major problems with my laptop that I'd like some advice on .
Firstly - after not turning on my laptop for a couple of weeks (the charger was broke) when I did finally get a new charger and TURNED my laptop on: the SCREEN was broke - lots of lines, some AREAS of the screen jumbled and moving up and down, however there is no external crack. I tried to get the laptop repaired on warranty - but they told me it was my fault and after SEEING pictures I send to them said that it was AN INTERNAL CRACK IN THE SCREEN. I've phoned around and been quoted around 100 pounds for a replacement screen and repair however I told the repair guys that my screen was 'cracked' and did not specify that the crack was internal. Would this make a difference? Can my laptop screen still be repaired?

Second problem: I have not used this laptop in a while due to the fact that Windows 7 blue screened and refused to boot back up - some files were corrupted or missing - and told me to insert the installation disk (which I didn't make >.< I know schoolboy error) . After a while I burned an ubuntu iso to a disk and booted from that - however I partitioned the drive wrong. Being honest I'm very inexperienced with technical matters like this and I'm pretty sure ubuntu asked me if it could 'unmount' the drive and I clicked OK. After that - the hard drive cannot be found - not in the system diagnostics at boot time or in ubuntu, I've tried taking the HDD out and putting it back in again - my computer cannot find it at all. Have I just broken my hard-drive for good ? I'm using the laptop now from an ubuntu 10.10 CD .

Sorry for the long winded-post.
Thanks.

Solve : rebuild a brand computer?

Answer»

can i rebuild a desktop by using peripherals from a brand name computer.

I have a REFURBISHED HP PAVILION m7580n that basically broke down. The hard drive failed.
So, Is it possible to replace the hard drive and buy windows 7 and get this computer to work again
without having any disks for all the peripherals attached to this computer?
Of course.Once you get Windows 7 installed, open Device Manager and GIVE it a careful look; you may need to download some device drivers to get all devices optimally running. Software & Driver Downloads - HP Pavilion Media Center TV m7580n Desktop PCI bought a new 2TB hard drive and OEM windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit and 2 more sticks of 1GB each to max my Ram.
I got everything hooked up but I'm not getting the CMOS screen. (I'm getting the HP Invent screen with options to press either F1, Esc, or F10 for recovery) but my wireless keyboard is not working. I tried plugging into all the external USBs.
I need help!
Thanks in advance Quote

but my wireless keyboard is not working
TRY using a wired keyboard(PS/2 if available). On BIOS setup make sure USB/keyboard is enabled and New HD is recognized and check boot priority, SAVE and exit. You could also remove first added RAM modules first on troubleshooting if everything still do not work and add them after installing OS.Thanks for your response jason2074.
Unfortunately, I threw out the wired keyboard.
I do NOTICE when I initially plug-in the usb adapter for the keyboard that a red light flashes,
telling me it's getting power.
I don't get it. Shouldn't the motherboard recognize this keyboard like it did in the past?
What am I not getting here. You shouldn't plug in/out keyboards with the power on...
A new PS2 keyboard is 10 Bucks...Well, the new ps/2 keyboard doesn't work either.
Are there any other suggestions?
Quote

Even with this suggestion, I am stumped. Remove the new drive & the new RAM. See if you can enter Setup. Finally!!!
Thanks to all of you. I really appreciate all your advice.

Special thanks to Computer Commando. After your last post, I basically removed all my peripherals. (video card, media card, modem, hard drive, cd-rom, and the extra ram)

It was great to see the CMOS screen.

One by one, I added one peripheral at a time with no problems.

Again thanks to all who posted. It was probably the media card reader, it's USB. I seem to remember other threads with the same issue.

Solve : Need to identify socket 462 Mboard??

Answer»

Sorry I don't have a digital camera here right now to show picture of this board.
I've goggled some info but can't find a match.

I found the manufacturers website and entered socket 462 (it's AMD Athlon processor), but where do find the info on the board for the next entry, "Model"?
(The MBoard shown in the LINK does not look like mine).
What other info do I need to provide here?
Thanks,
MikeUse CPUID --> http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.htmlI don't have it installed yet. I have an ATX full tower case in which the CPU went bad. I want to install this MBoard/CPU to replace that.
I need to order a few things to go with this board (Memory, graphics card ect) but I need to know memory specs ect.Did'nt follow the link so I thought of just needing some additional info. for your mobo. Ok did you look at any AREAS such as near the expansion slots or cards marking for the model of your mobo? Also look beside the processor slot or CPU. If not, then its possible that you need to take it to a computer repair shop and have them physically check at the same time look for replacements and upgrades that fits the mobo. Wait for other members to give additional suggestions.I looked with a magnifying glass and my best glasses, although, with my old eyes, it may still be right there in bold print. lol
I searched through every model # listed on the manufacturers site and I believe I found it. The picture is identical and I'll view the manual I downloaded as SOON as I get through updating my Office 2000 software (in process now).
I'll post back when I have more info.
Thanks Jason! Well, I installed the mboard and only connected 1 known good HD. When powered on, the led's light up and PS FAN runs for ~ 5 seconds then everything quits. No beeps - nothing shows on monitor. This is a used mboard and cpu a friend GAVE me. He said it was supposed to be good but he's not known as being real honest sometimes. I may be just wasting my time unless there is something one of you guru's can suggest me trying?
Otherwise I'll start saving for a new mboard/cpu.
Check CMOS battery and try replacing it. You could check the battery using a voltmeter( removed from mobo). If you have onboard sound, video for the mobo, use it first if you happen to insert any cards to troubleshoot. A RAM module(s) swapping one or two on power up would be next and make sure its compatible. PSU would be next then CPU or Mobo along the way. Quote from: jason2074 on March 27, 2011, 10:09:51 PM

Battery test 3.1v with DVOM.
No expansion cards are installed.
Mboard has onboard audio, video and eithernet.
It has 2 slots for ddr memory modules and 2 slots for sdr modules. I have both types of known good modules and have tried both types, separately (user manual says not to use both types simutaniously.
I dont have another AMD socket 462 CPU handy.Swap now with another PSU. Use atleast one RAM for testing. Without knowing the real condition of the used mobo, the test and swapping will reveal it.

Keyboard & mouse still don't work on other ports. My printer is a samsung but it hasn't been connected for ages. Is there any other information you need? thanks. How are they being reported in Device MANAGER ? ?Nothing was installed recently except the last time it worked properly & i shut down it installed windows SECURITY update kb2524375. I uninstalled it but it still doesn't work. Quote from: patio on March 26, 2011, 07:13:09 AM

Solve : Computer keeps getting blue screen errors when reinstalling Windows XP.?

Answer» ONE of my spare computers has been having PROBLEMS lately. I usually leave it running right next to me and I noticed that it would randomly restart, get BSOD's, and even sometimes it would give an error that Windows Explorer had to be shut down. I immediately diagnosed it as some kind of software problem and decided to reinstall Windows on it(since it had nothing on it and I didn't really want to fix Windows).

But now every time I try to install Windows it crashes. It seems to occur 3 or 4 minutes after I input the network settings. Here's part of the blue screen error it gave:

If you can't read it says:

***STOP: 0X0000001A (0X0004128B, 0X09185201, 0X00000000, 0XC0883000)

Also, I have also gotten an error that said:
***STOP: 0x0000007F (I think all these sequences were 0X00000000 4 times. )

Anyway, I'm thinking it's a RAM problem I've got here. I did check both RAM cards and reseated them after I got the 0x0000007F error, and after reseating them is when I got the 0x0000001A error.

Any help?
Try one stick of ram at a time and see what happensI've seen this kind of error a number of times.

It is either the RAM, the cache on the MOTHERBOARD or the harddisk.

You need to eliminate the RAM first, then the Harddisk. If both turn up clean, it's time for a new mobo.

1) To check the RAM...
> Use a single stick from your set, then run any ram stress tester program for 24 hours. If you don't get any crashes, it's your memory, replace the sticks. If you still get a crash, try another stick until you've tried all the sticks you have.

If they all crash, it's unlikely to be the ram. On to step two.

2) The harddisk is the next thing to check. The only decent way to check it is to simply swap it with another computer that has windows installed. Windows will automatically detect all the hardware and allow you a few days of free time (if it asks to validate). Leave the PC running for a few days, see if you get any crashes. If you don't have another disk to try, try running a full SECTOR scan, it may turn up bad sectors but it's not a conclusive test.

Working? Replace Disk. Still crashing? Step three.

3) Sadly, this usually means the problem is the motherboard cache. The error is caused by corruption in the registry and if you've already eliminated the ram and the disk, it has to be the board. Theres no easy fix here, you'll have to sack the board and get a new one . Cleaned up some irrelevant posts. Thanks guys.

I found out that one of the RAM slots was the problem. So, after shifting my RAM around it's all working fine.

Solve : GPU memory test: how long??

Answer»

How long does it take to complete analysing a graphics CARD memory?

The video card in question is Nvidia Geforce 9600 GT, it's being tested by the utility called SiSoftware Sandra, and the test has been running, like, 25 hours. Is it normal? (The settings are default, so it shouldn't be an endless cycle...)
Unfortunately, the software does not show the progression of the test.
I believe the OS is not frozen, although the monitor is; the mouse led has its regular red shine when the mouse is not touched. So, the devices aren't responding but the system is PROBABLY running.
How safe would it be to force the shutdown / unplug the PC; could it damage the video card? How long can a standard PC be working? It doesn't sound normal. You could Google that card's specs, and it is safe to turn off the computer. As for how long a PC can run, for example, mine never stops.
There was a program I had found once that told me directly the memory of GPUS, though I don't remember it now. What you're using is probably a stress test to see how high the temperature and how slow it gets, which never stops unless you stop it yourself. It runs TIL you terminate it...

So does MemTest. All RIGHT, the PC having been rebooted, nothing seems to be out of order, except for the txt-report breaking at the place it should show the test results at. I'll try some different testing software, then.
Thank you for the answers! No problem...Welcome Aboard !

Solve : SoundMAX Integrated HD Audio weak, especially external speakers?

Answer»

This is on my HP Compaq 6715b notebook (in specs).
System sounds are fair but playing videos I can barely hear it unless it's late at night with everything else quiet.
I have a set of JBL external speakers that sound great when hooked to any of my desktops, and sound good hooked to my Toshiba laptop (in specs).
This sound card is integrated (see link) and I do have an empty card slot (One Type I/II PC Card slot, 16-bit PCMCIA and 32-bit CardBus). But I can't afford an external sound card right now if I can find the problem with this internal card.
I checked device manager for driver updates but it SAYS it has the latest available (4/24/2008).
What can I do first to troubleshoot this?
Thanks,
Mike
I know this MAY sound obvious, but did you CHECK the volume for all outputs.

Start -> Run -> sndvol32The mixer panel only shows 2 volume SETTINGS - speakers and system sounds. Both are set to max. Quote from: lectrocrew on March 28, 2011, 11:52:46 AM

The mixer panel only shows 2 volume settings - speakers and system sounds. Both are set to max.

Is this while running a video? The volume control in the mixer won't show unless it is active
Have you checked the volume level on the video player itself?

Easier way to get to the mixer is to single click the small speaker icon in the bottom right of the screen on the taskbar, and selecting mixer. Quote from: Kurtiskain on March 28, 2011, 08:44:10 PM

Yes mainly when playing a video. Whether it's played from a file in my documents on C drive or from an external drive. The onboard speaker volume is weak and external speaker volume is almost un-hearable.

Quote

"Video player"? I have Nero 8 Ultra Edition and VLC media Player. Audio is the same with both. (I did have WMP before I un-installed it, but results were the same with it also).

When I connect the laptop to the TV and use the amp on the TV I get good sound if I turn the TV volume up. At this point, if I disconnect the laptop from the TV, then the TV volume is way too loud for viewing regular TV channels via cable providers box input.

External speakers are JBL Pro pc speakers (non-amplified) that sound awesome when connected to any of my desktops with good sound cards but only marginally better this this pc when connected to my Toshiba laptop.

Sounds to me like I may need a high performance sound card for this pc. Will this increase increase onboard sound also or just external audio output?

Quote

That's how I get to the 2 volume controls I posted (speakers and system sounds).

Most of my other pC's have several controls available in the mixer control panel. Why does this only have the 2 (speakers and system sounds)

And thanks to you for your help Kurtiskain.
Try Winamp(Free Version) --> http://www.winamp.com/media-player/en although not all video types are supported but I think it has better audio output with a preset equalizer(full bass & treble) and an "on" button for amplified sound experience. Thanks, and yes the Winamp audio output is better with pre-amp setting +12 and all equalizers at max, but it's not going to be the answer here I'm afraid. I think we are just treating the symptom with this approach. I'm going to need more audio card output volume somehow.
I also connected the PC audio external output to a home stereo amplifier - then connected that amp output to these same JBL speakers. The sound is better, but only with the amp (10watts per channel RMS into 8 ohms) volume pegged at max.Check your manual. Somewhere there is another volume control. Quote from: Geek-9pm on March 29, 2011, 01:41:22 AM
Check your manual. Somewhere there is another volume control.
I can't find it.
The only audio related icons I see in Control Panel is "Sound". And there are limited options there.

Attached is a screen shot:
or here

I see no Soundmax audio software offered from HP for my pc - only drivers.
I have the latest sound driver and have tried an earlier driver = same results.
The HP user manual and specifications manual have no usable info pertaining to 'low' volume that I haven't ruled out thus far.

[recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]After reading the above posts...You state that the JBL speakers are non-amplified? As far as I know, there are very few sounds cards that amplify the sound enough for speakers to function without the use of external power.

I had an old HP where the sound card connected directly to the PSU to provide pre-amped output to the speakers which were also non-amplified, they did not need an external power connection.

I have an PCI-e X-FI Titanium in my rig, and even that isn't manly enough to power a basic pair of speakers.

have you tried another pair in the laptop? Ones that require power from a wall socket preferably.
If you don't have a pair handy, stroll your laptop down to your equivalent of Noel Leemings/Bond and Bond, im guessing something like circuit city or something.
Stores like that here in NZ have speaker systems set up for you to try out (Many wasted afternoons blasting music from MP3 players on $1500 speaker sets )
These will be passively powered so they will provide you with the test you need.

Solve : Command for Com Port?

Answer»

Hi,
I'm writing a program for counting bills in VB.net. I'm using L70 of CTS Electronic device for read the bills (OCR scanner) and it's connected over Com Port. I need to find a command to start "read". It can be reprogrammed to read automatically when sensor recognize a BILL, but, for a external proprietary software, cannot do that.

Thanks
ManuelI did not vote because I do not understand why you can not do it all inside of VB.net,
- am I missing something?
I do believe there is a method of dealing with COM port events in VB.http://www.dreamincode.net/forums/topic/37361-serial-port-communication-in-vbnet/

Should work for .NET 2.0, 3.0, 3.5, or 4. I haven't had to use Serial Port communications ever, let alone in .NET and particularly not in VB.NET since I haven't used it more then a few minutes for a few general questions elsewhere on the forum.

I didn't vote because the poll is pointless and probably not intentional. But of course they can do it all outside VB.NET. they COULD also write the program in python without wearing any pants or without using the JVM. Absolutely none of those arbitrary constraints helps them achieve their goal of reading bills via OCR.

you missed this piece:

Quote

Therefore, assistance should be provided for VB.NET, and not you rambling about your inability to understand why they don't use assembly or some nonsense.I was not going to suggest assembly. For control of the serial port it can be a DOS program like QBASIC. The commercial version of QBASIC would handle com port events in real time. I used it to parse a X.25 feed feed from a communications Satellite MANY years ago. The current version of VB should have the equivalent thing.

I am guessing here, but I think he wants a program to respond in real time. So it has to be event-driven, not just any sort of program to read data from the port. Of course, you can use port-polling, but that means the CPU will suffer a big performance hit. It may not mufti task well with port polling. Instead, it should be interrupt driven.
Maybe the OP will clarify. Quote from: Geek-9pm on March 28, 2011, 04:27:45 PM

Quote

There was no commercial version of QBASIC. there was QuickBASIC. I hope you aren't suggesting they pirate a copy?

VB.NET is hardly even close to QuickBASIC, except that it has some similar syntax. It's like comparing C to Javascript at this point.

You say Tomato,
I say Eggplant.
Here is common usage:
Quote
For some people...
"QuickBasic is a product of Microsoft Corporation. It contains quite a lot of commands that can help in creating software programs and games. The only limit is your imagination. These commands, like any other languages, are typed in QB environment line by line to be compiled by the compiler and then executed... thus creating an output. QB Programs are made out of many many lines of commands or codes that are typed inside QB to be executed."

And for others...
"QBasic is Microsoft's version of the popular BASIC programming language. BASIC stands for Beginners' All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code. The Q in QBasic stands for Quick. There are many different versions of BASIC but most have become obsolete. GW-BASIC and BASICA are two examples."
QuickBASIC is the commercial product.

QBASIC is the free interpreter provided with MS-DOS 5 and later to replace GW-BASIC and BASICA from previous versions.

QBASIC & QuickBASIC are both obsolete. There is no commercial version of QBASIC, just as there is no commercial version of DIR or SORT.

And no, the ability to use OPEN "COM" statements is not in VB.NET, since you don't open files using file numbers and OPEN statements anymore. Quote from: Geek-9pm on March 28, 2011, 10:50:49 AM

This was my original post. Still I would like to know why he wants to use some program tool outside of what you can do with some version of VB. Either VB NET or VB 2005. The is an event HANDLER for the serial port (com port) in VB. And it has been thee for awhile. Current syntax is something about a delegate of an event.

One of many references...

Solve : Question about high CPU Temps??

Answer»

I'm currently running a custom build (about a year old) and it seems the CPU temps are higher than in the past. The build is as follows:

Antec 300 case
1 140mm top case fan (run on low SPEED)
1 120mm back case fan (run on low speed)
AMD Phenom II 965 BE 3.4ghz (no OC, stock cooler)
12 GB RAM (using all RAM slots)
Gigabyte MA790GPT-UD3H
SAPPHIRE 100283L Radeon HD 5770
Corsair CMPSU-650TX 650W PSU
Samsung F3 1TB HD
WD 320GB HD
Windows 7 64-bit

I bench tested it a year ago before the video card addition (so integrated graphics) and got

NO VIDEO CARD

Idle: 31 C
Load (PRIME 95 for over 1 hour): 67 C

I just recently decided to test for temperatures again and used Prime95 with CoreTemp to monitor, and the temperatures were getting fairly high.

(WITH HD 5770)

Idle: 37-38 C
Load (Prime 95 after 2 minutes): 77 C

Video card Idle: 58 C

I actually stopped the Prime 95 test about a few minutes since the CPU temperature kept GOING up and I didn't want to hit the CPU Tj Max (78 C according to CoreTemp).

Should I be looking to add more case FANS to the front and side? Should I probably consider a new after-market CPU cooler like (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835233001)?

I'm concerned about the stability of my machine once I get to putting under more stress playing games and such. I'm looking to keep my computer as quiet as POSSIBLE (one reason I run the fans at low speed), but still maintain good cooling so stability isn't a problem.

Thanks for any suggestions.Did you modify the fans to run at lower speeds? Well if you did, that's whats causing your over heat problem . obviously when the heat comes up the fans are controlled by the motherboard to run faster. but if it's making a big noise you can try a silent cooling fan , refer to the links below. There is also some tips for silent computer cooling. A quiet cooling fan is 12db or less, the lesser it's the quieter it's.

Solve : Intel i7 990x Build?

Answer»

Hello guys

I'm a beginner in IT world.

I want to build a computer and I already have the following hardware:

I7 990x Processor
Corsair Obsidian 800D (modified for good air flow)
Corsair AX1200W
2 x SSDs

I want to buy:

Asus Rampage 3 Formula
Corsair Dominator GT 2000MHz 6GB
2 x MSI GTX 580 Twin Fronz 2 (for Surround gaming on 3 x 3D monitors)
1 x 2TB HHD
And so on.

Please tell me what AIR Cooler will be good enough to keep 990x safe overckocked to 4.0 or 4.2ghz? (I don’t want those insane 5.0ghz overclocks (so far), and I don’t want to water cool because I’m not experienced in water cooling so far (but I will go for it ultimately).

And, can 990x 4.0ghz handle two GTX 580s in SLI? Or need it more OVERCLOCK?

I will use this PC mostly for gaming, 3d modeling and HD movies

Please advise

All the best
ok your first question. Recommended coolers.

Your socket type is LGA1366 so need a compatible cooler.

Corsair Hydro H70 = This is a watercooling system which is completly inclosed therefore very little chance of a water leak.. Look it up before discrediting it.
Is it as good as "true"water cooling , no

Cooler Master V10 = 100% air cooling however this cooler is massive so check you case room before buying it.

Corsair Cooling Air Series A70 = can handle a i7 at 4Ghz with some wiggle room lol.

There are more coolers out there that will be able to handle your i7 at 4Ghz just look throught the reviews ect.
Corsair Hydro H70 = my vote
or the A70 second place lol

And yes it will handle both the graphics cards

p.s thats quite a lot of money spent on a computer, EVEN more so as it's your first build lolJust a note...the OEM cooler for the i7 works fine...i average around 39 degrees on mine.ok your first question. Recommended coolers.

Hello Steven

I did look through the reviews and found plenty of coolers, most enthusiasts vote for the Noctua 14, but it’s very big, seems bigger than Cooler Master v10, besides it can’t fit in with the Dominator GTs. But I like this v10, and I like it can fit in and cool off the Dominator GTs, but it’s very heavy, 1,2 kg. You think it’s ok to put this much pressure upon the CPU/motherboard? Some say that it can damage CPU/motherboard someday, some say it cannot. What do you think?
So, in case the v10 doesn’t put much pressure I’ll go for it, otherwise I’ll go for the Corsair H70)

As for the money spend, well, i was lucky to get i7-990 as a gift from my friend

Thank you for the help

Hello Patio

I don't have the OEM cooler, only the processor.

Thank you anyway

Yes the v10 is heavy like everything coolermaster builds

It has a large back plate which helps to distrubute the weight over the motherboard. As for it damaging or bending your motherboard, yes it "could" but fitted correctly it won't. (insure all screws are in correctly as having a lose one will put more stain on the board)

Also watch out for clearance between cooler and ram as some ram won't fit with a large cooler !!!

also you have some very nice friends lolI would definitely go with the Corsair H70 or H50. It's a water cooler that you never have to do anything with after installation, installation is beyond easy, plug and play basically. I agree with the users above, i would definitely go for a Corsair H50 or H70. Please refer to the links below if you want more details.

Solve : NVidia 9500 GT on a Pentium D??

Answer»

I am running a computer with a PENTIUM D 2.80 Ghz processor. The computer is an HP Pavilion a1440n. I am planning on installing an NVidia 9500 GT PCI-E GRAPHICS card. Is my computer's CPU good enough for this card? I'm going to upgrade the power supply FIRST, as I got a 630 watt power supply in the mail yesterday. The upgrading won't begin this week though, as I need my computer for school work, and it is working well right now.

This is the power supply: http://www.atxpowersupplies.com/630-watt-power-supply.htm?psu=630WPS-a1440n

I am also planning on having the CPU's thermal paste reapplied when doing this. Quote from: Ryan on March 19, 2011, 07:57:22 AM

...it is working well right now....
I don't think it's worth spending over $100 on a 5-year old computer that's working well.If you are looking for better performance while playing games, it will defiantly help at least a little. What is the reason for the upgrade?I'm looking for better gaming performance, but am also looking to enable brightmaps in GZDoom. My current card, an NVidia 7300 LE, does not support brightmaps in 3D accelerated computer games, and I want to be able to experience them. Right now, if I enable the brightmaps in GZDoom, nothing happens.

Will a Pentium D computer be able to run this card if I upgrade the power supply beforehand? The 9500 GT requires 350 watts of power, and my current power supply is not good enough. I won't install this card without getting the new PSU installed.

The NVidia 9500 GT was released back in 2008. Quote from: Ryan on March 19, 2011, 12:15:13 PM

I just received the graphics card. It indeed states that it requires a 350 watt or greater system power supply, with a minimum 12V current rating of 18A. It also states at the bottom of one of the box's sides that the minimum power requirement was based on a PC configured with an Intel Core2 Duo processor. Would the Intel Pentium D processor be able to handle this card well?

Also, if you don't think so, would it be possible to upgrade to an Intel Core2 Duo processor? I looked on Wikipedia, and it stated that they both use an LGA 775 socket. Right now, I do not have the money, as I spent it on the power supply and graphics card. The Core2 Duo is certainly faster than the Pentium D, but what I'd like to know is whether the graphics card will perform fine on a Pentium D. Also, if I upgrade the CPU, will a BIOS upgrade be needed first? I will back up all important documents before doing any of this, whether they're school documents, gaming related, or anything else.

My most recent games use DirectX 9.0c. The newest computer game I have is Doom 3, and I haven't been buying any new PC games lately. My suspicion is you cannot upgrade your cpu to a Core2 Duo. Some research using google would confirm this.

In the future, I would suggest you do your research before you order hardware. The people on this forum could have helped you make a more informed decision. That said, I suspect you will see a moderated increase in gaming performance with the new card. Your CPU may limit the performance gains the card could provide, but then (from what I GATHER) the card isn't all that expensive. Quote from: hejlik on March 19, 2011, 02:40:06 PM

I agree on both points. Branded computers are generally not CPU upgradeable as the BIOS is customized for a particular configuration. HP would not provide any information (even if they knew) & your only source would be from someone who had actually made the swap on exactly the same model.

Hmm. I take it I should have looked at what the original PSU's specs are? I had searched for a power supply using Google search, and it was one of those that came up on the first page. Should I have tried Newegg or some other site?

I searched Newegg, and they have the same PSU:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817165040&cm_re=PSU-_-17-165-040-_-Product

Can you suggest a better PSU if the graphics card requires 350w? I want one that would be more than adequate enough. I'll contact ATXPowersupplies if I deem I should return the PSU I ordered and get my money back. Hopefully I can find the shipping box. Patio, while you haven't responded yet, I have more information to add.

I found this page, and found out that my current graphics card, the NVidia GEForce 7300 LE, also has a power requirement of 350 watts. Is that correct? They recommended a PSU of at least 500 watts, and the one I bought has a wattage rating that exceeds that.

I'm looking for better gaming performance, but am also looking to enable brightmaps in GZDoom. My current card, an NVidia 7300 LE, does not support brightmaps in 3D accelerated computer games, and I want to be able to experience them. Right now, if I enable the brightmaps in GZDoom, nothing happens.

Um... Was this a recent addition to GzDoom? the only options I have are for dynamic lights and shaders, nothing about "brightmaps"....

Just did a quick search, yeah, I'm outdated, 4.1.3 and the latest is 1.5.6...

Anyway, not sure if it was in the new version or not, but I did find the console cvar and CHANGING it did nothing for me (9800GT) I think it's just one of those options that is subtle and hard to see anyway. Quote from: BC_Programmer on March 20, 2011, 10:34:54 AM

The brightmaps are in a separate PK3 file. You'd have to go into the ZDoom ini file and under [Global.Autoload] put in "Path=Brightmaps.pk3" without quotes. I believe lights may have to be turned on as well.HP Pavilion Media Center a1440n Desktop PC Product Specifications

Solve : Computer Keeps Crashing - New thread Post as Requested by Allan?

Answer»

Hi Allan, thank you for your response. Here is all of the info required:

1. I am running Windows XP and have service Pack 3 installed a while ago. Worked fine when I did that update.
2.As for an antivirus, I have Avast installed. I was able to run a scan a few DAYS ago and it found nothing. The computer shuts down now before it is able to complete the scan.
3.Firewall, I'm not sure if I have a firewall other than the XP firewall. Not sure I should do this now given how overtaxed everything is. Obviously, I'd like to download it once the computer is running ok.
4. I went through the list in my add or remove feature but did not find anything on there that is malware.
5.CCleaner. I was able to download this successfully and then run it. Cleaned out the registry per the instructions.
6. SuperAntispyware. I was able to download the program but the computer KEEPS shutting down before completing the scan.
7.Malware Bytes..I was able to scan this and it found nothing in the quick scan. Itried runing the full scan and the computer keeps shutting down before completing. No errors were found up until the pont it shut down.
8.HiJackThis . I was able to run this as well and included the log below. I was not able to us the self help tool as it also shut the computer down before completing.
9. I have he most recent Java and Adobe installed

As an additional NOTE, the initial part of turning the computer on works fine. The problem occurs after logging on and booting up fully. Once the computer is fully booted up can hear the computer running as f it is going at a high speed (fan?) and it doesn't stop until it soon shuts the computer down. I tried removing all the fans and the video card and cleaning them out to make sure it was not dirt or dust. They seem be functioning properly.I asked for this?Yes, I posted yesterday and you referred me to your page with the LINK of what to do. I went through everything. It took me 5 hours but I tried as much as possible and I tried to be specific about what I was able to do and not do. ou asked that I post it in a new thread. Please follow the instructions in the ORIGINAL thread and post your logs in the forum indicated in that post. Thank you.Forgive me. I am not sure which forum you are referring to where I should post. The link you provided links me to the instructions page I followed step by step. Can you guide me in the right direction asto where to post?Ok I think I got it and posted it on the virus and spyware removal forum.

Solve : Need help! Installed new hard drive?

Answer»

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Here is my story....I have xp and 2 hard drives. One is 20gb and the other is 40gb. The 40 is just for my pics and stuff, the 20 has xp and all programs, so I get a 60gb hard DRIVE and thought I would just transfer everything over, I figured it would just go over what was on the 60gb before I started. Ya right! Stupid idea! So now I have installed the new 60gb and the 40 has stayed where it is and is fine. I thought that the xp I had on my 20 would just go over the one that was already installed on the 20, wrong again. So I believe I have transferred everything over but I cant get any drivers to work. So now I have the 20gb HD I took out of the COMPUTER hooked up to the external reader. I have the 60 gb HD installed with everything on it from my 20gb HD (I believe) except the xp. It has the XP that was already installed on the new hard drive, but I wanted the XP from my 20 gb HD. I believe that is why I cant get any drivers to work. Please help! I hope I explained correctly. Any help would be so appreciated.

LisaI'm not sure I understand. Did you ACTUALLY INSTALL XP on the new drive? If not, you can't just copy it from one drive to another and expect it to boot. You need to use disc imaging software such as Macrium Reflect. Create an image of the original 20 Gb drive and then restore it to the new drive. Then you'll be able to boot to the new drive. No I didn't install xp, it was already on the new HD I put in. I just thought that when I transfered everything over that the xp on the old HD would just go over the xp that was on the new HD. But I dont think it did, I think that is why I am having problems finding any drivers for the ethernet CONTROLLER, multimedia Audio Controller, and network controller. Any ideas anyone?? Solve : Gateway desktop turns on but power light not on & no signal to monitor.?

Answer»

This happens off & on: My Gateway 5458E desktop will turn on, but the POWER light doesn't come on (should be blue) & there is no signal to the monitor. The computer powers up, can hear sounds (fan, etc), keyboard lights up, can see light from DVD player, but nothing on monitor & no power light. Have tried a different monitor with same results.

The computer has also turned itself off while working ok a couple of times & wouldn't restart correctly until next day, but most of the time this happens when I try to do a restart or just turn on computer after being turned off.

What could be causing it to start sometimes & not others?

Thanks!A failing Power Supply sounds like the root cause of this issue.

Any local computer store will be able to help you with one. The power supply is one of the most important parts of a computer.
If they OFFER something REALLY cheap, eg $30 it is not very good quality, the higher quality the better.

Assuming you are using the machine as standard, a 350W PSU will cover you, however if you plan on getting a graphics card to play games or video edit ect a 500W minimum should be followed.

Solve : Can not get my wireless HP printer to work.?

Answer»

I recently purchased a HP 4500 wireless printer. I was hoping to get it to work in my home NETWORK so that the Mrs and I could use the same printer. She uses a Hp laptop running Vista in the kitchen while I use a desktop running Windows 7 in the spare bedroom. Right now I have the printer connected to my desktop via USB and it is working.
When I try to get it to work wireless I get to the point in HP directions where it asks for the network WEP key it will not "unlock" and stops responding. The "NEXT" button does not validate.
Does anyone know what my problem is?? Will appreciate any help. Thanks for reading this, JIM Quote from: jim.mar on March 26, 2011, 06:12:31 PM

where it asks for the network WEP key it will not "unlock" and stops responding.
I'm no expert but I'll try to help until one of the guru's on here solves your issue.
What type of wireless ROUTER/print server do you have?...
Can you dial into your router to verify what WEP key you have selected?
Are you entering your SSID correctly?
Have you tried WPS setup?
I may way off base here. Just trying to help.
MikeAssume it is a regular wireless router.
My understanding is that he printer can be:

USB or wireless
but never both.

He will have to do the install again, without the USB cable, and select wireless. The cable will be plugged in for awhile.
He must specify if password is WEP or WEPA
Once the printer an talk to the wireless router, he removes the cable.
Both PCs must get to the printer via wireless router.
There is another way. Try this first.
Thanks for the comeback guys.
First, yes I know what my WEP key is and I know my routers IP no. and my SSID

Secondly aregular wireless router and can be either USB or Wireless. Right now I have it working on USB to my desktop. I thought that I could switch it over to wireless so it could be used with computers..

I can never get to the point where I am supposed to disconnect the USB cable. I get to where it asks for the WEP key but does not respond after that.

Maybe I have to un-install the printer as a USB connected unit first. Think so?? I
installed it that way so the I could get some printing tasks done in a hurry. Yes, un- install and start over.

This is not meant to be a slam on HP. In fact, the printer you have is a good value for home use. Here is one of many good reviews.
Quote
The HP OfficeJet 4500 Wireless is not exactly a speed demon, but for the price (I saw it as low as $129.99, and cheaper if you don't want wireless), it's a very good DEAL. For that price, built-in wireless, an automatic document feeder, fax, and (manual) DUPLEX come as welcome surprises. Print quality for text documents was not the best I've seen, and duplex pages will bleed through, but color photos looked lush and wonderful.
http://printscan.about.com/od/allinoneprinters/gr/officejet4500.htm
My remarks were not about routers in general. It is about how to network a printer. What I want to stree is:
Do not network a USB printer.
This is a general rule. If you want to put a printer on your network it can be:
Wireless
OR
Ethernet
(But not both)
Sorry, I am not good for explaining why.
Check you manual or user guide.
Sometimes I have had to install my HP 6550 two or three times to get it right. (I like to change OS and I have to do the printer over.)
GEEK: Thanks for the advice. I think I got it this time.
Well when I started to UN INSTALL the HP software, I found six diifferent programs and I tried to unistall all six. Five of the six gave me back a message: "RUNTIME ERROR!! THIS APPLICATION HAS REQUESTED THE RUNTIME TO TERMINATE IN AN UNUSUAL WAY".... One program, "HP Office Jet 4500 G510n-z" uninstalled successfully. I stopped right there. I am not sure what to do next. Any suggestions?? JIM Quote from: jim.mar on March 29, 2011, 11:14:41 AM

Well I'm at my wits end. All attempts to un install or install result in the same message and no action. Result: Now the printer/scanner/copier does not worrk in any mode, wireless or USB. The only thing that I can think to do is go back to GO, reformat and start over...?? Do not network a USB printer.
Why? I see no reason not to network a USB printer. Any printer (parallel or USB) connected to networked computer should accessible from other computers on the network if printer sharing has been enabled.

Solve : Problems with RAM?

Answer»

Hello folks, I have a problem with NEW RAM in my laptop. I have a relatively OLD computer, a HP Pavilion zd8000 with 512 MB of RAM. I researched this particular model and discovered I could upgrade to 2 GB (1 GB x2) of PC2-4200 DDR2, while I currently have 512 MB (256 x2) of PC2 3200s 200 pim DDR2. So, I checked and re-checked and finally ordered the new RAM. I know it's nothing phenomenal, but for what I do with my computer, 4x the RAM would help a LOT. I received the RAM in the mail today, Kingston brand, and properly installed it. When I turned my laptop on it BEEPED several times and stayed on. The fan was running but the screen was blank. The only other activity was the power button blinking on and off. Otherwise, the laptop would not respond to anything I did. I don't know what the problem could be. I even went to the HP website prior to my order and double-checked that this model could handle the upgraded RAM. Any suggestions???Have you tried it with just 1 stik ? ?No, I haven't. I will try now. I guess I was under the impression that both sticks were required. I'll say it now, I'm not that educated on how some of this stuff works. There are no specs for that laptop on HP's website. CRUCIAL doesn't even have a listing for it.
Run the Crucial scanner tool: http://www.crucial.com/index.aspx

Found the Service Manual: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01383095.pdf
I think it supports 2-1GB modules, DDR2-400, (PC2-3200)
See Table3-1, p.3-7Which means it may not be able to run PC 4200...

1. When you say the "memory card" did not fit perfectly, do you mean it was the wrong type for the slot?
2. Have you taken it out again?
no it was in the right slot, but when you put in it it should be clicked in you know, but it was only clicked in on 1 SIDE. i tried putting it in and out but my pc still doestn work? sorry for my bad english im just a 15 year old from holland. It is possible that the motherboard or the power supply was damaged when the computer was switched on with the RAM module partly inserted.

Yes it think that's it because the lights in the computer is the only THING that works so i think i destroyed the motherboard... thanks for your help anyways. I am sorry to give you bad news.

IA-32 is x86. X86-64 is amd64. Note I said non x86/amd64 hardware.

PowerPC is split into PPC32 and PPC64.

There is no longer sparc support, only sparc64 and sun4v.

Others such as mips and arm are limited.

The ones with the most support are: sparc64, sun4v, ia-64, ppc32, and ppc64.
I work with ppc32 and sparc64.
Why was this moved when it is offtopic about operating systems and an open public challenge? Placing this in computer hardware was a wrong move. It is not a question about computer hardware.
Why is Geek-9pm giving me a REFERENCE about FreeBSD from wikipedia? I know what I am asking because I use the system.
Why is BC_Programmer afraid to answer my question himself?

Solve : My Vista PC will not backup to any USB external drive?

Answer»

I have tried I think everything too this mini pc apart put it back together and it did a backup, then never again it just locks up explorer till I pull out the USB cable. Everything else works fine. The progress bar when copying a file quite often does not go past 90% and goes red. Any help would be appreciated.

GerryDon't use explorer to copy large files to a USB DEVICE.
Unless you have a USB device that is fully compatible in every way.
This means a device from a brand name company sold though a major vendor.

What device are you using?
How exactly are you backing up ? ?
What else is on the external HDD ? ? Quote from: Geek-9pm on April 03, 2011, 04:05:46 PM

Don't use explorer to copy large files to a USB device.
Can you document that statement please?I meant any unproven USB device. Here is a document. Literally.
The disuse is an old one, but many cheap USB devices may not be on the list of types that are known to be reliable. It is an issue with MS software as much as the hardware.
Quote
Document Name UNRELIABLE USB ADSL connections

Symptoms
During heavy data transfers using the ADSL USB modem under Microsoft Windows XP,
the USER may experience unstable connections and degraded throughput, especially
with FTP SESSIONS.

Cause
This issue occurs because Windows XP is dropping frames on the USB bus during
isochronous transfers.

Resolution
Microsoft acknowledged this to be a problem within Windows XP in an article discussing
one of its most visible effects, a distorted SOUND when USB speakers are used. This
issue is related to the USB management by Windows XP and can be experienced with a
number of other USB devices. Updating Windows XP with the XP Service Pack 1 should
solve this issue.

www.usr.com/support/sportster/sportster-files/EMEACSO0010.pdf
Yes, it was a network issue, but it was really the way MS software did the SUB device. The reference above indicates that. From this, one could expect all large streams through the USB can be an issue.
This article claims a XP SP update will fix the problem. That does not apply in this case. Instead, it would seem that Vista may have inherited some old issues. There is no reason not to use Explorer to copy ANY file(s) to usb devices. Period. Please stop posting nonsense

Solve : Onboard Video is fried - Need to bybass - So system will see video card?

Answer»

I have a Dell Optiplex, and the onboard video died. I cannot get into the bios, to tell it to let me use a video card, because I cannot get any video at all. Can anyone help me figure out a fix? Most PC's...(newer) will recognise when a vid card is added and AUTOMATICALLY DISABLE onboard...Thank you for your help, but this system does not work that way. I have hooked monitors up to it, that I know work, because they are working on other SYSTEMS. And it will not recognize them. What about it tells you it is just the video output?

Does the machine still boot into windows/can you log in?

Or do you get nothing at all?The MOTHER board lights up, and you can even hear the system post and boot. However, there is absolutely nothing on the MONITOR screen. The power light is on, but there is nothing on the screen, it is completely black.I would say that if the Dell cannot recognise and use an external video card, and you are quite sure the onboard video is kaput, then effectively the motherboard is dead. Thank you for your help!

Solve : nx 6110 OS installation problem?

Answer»

Hi,

How to INSTALL Windows XP on this laptop? When it boots it says "Time and Date not SET", than goes to Non-System disk or disk error...
It does not want to boot from the XP Windows disk, though in BIOS it is the first device to boot from. Probably I need an HP setup disk, which will be recognized by the HARDWARE? Does anybody have it?

Thank you for your help.
Leo.

The time and date part probably has to do with having a dead CMOS battery. The windows XP installation CD is probably currupt. Try another CD.

Solve : pc to wireless printer?

Answer»

Sorry if this topic has been addresses, I didn't see this particular issue in my search. I would like to connect a PC to a new HP wireless printer. The PC doesn't have a wireless card. Can I USE a D-Link wireless ROUTER that I already have to connect to the printer. I have the disc that CAME with the router, deep in a storage building.
Can I use the router to connect to the printer through the normal LAN port or must i designate a printer port?
Can anyone provide a link to get the router install program?
Thanksyou can use a wireless USB adapter like Netgear to connect to wireless devices in your case your printer. please refer to the link below.

http://www.netgear.com.au/au/Product/Adapters/Wireless-G-Adapters/WG111

[recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]
For installing a wireless printer on Windows XP, wireless router is an essential device.

Follow the recommended steps mentioned on the installation CD of the router, and set-up a wireless network.

Since several computers or laptops will access the printer, it is recommended to connect the wireless printer to the main computer through the USB port.

To begin the installation process on Windows XP, access the network setting in the Control Panel, and ACTIVATE the file and printer sharing option in the LAN setting.

This will allow the operating system to recognize the availability of a wireless printer.

Now, click the Start button, go to Devices and Printers, select Add a Printer option.

Click the second option- Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth printer.

The computer will search for available printer and reflect it on the screen.

Click Finish; and the printer is ready to begin the printing process.

Solve : Western Digital and Seagate. Good? Bad??

Answer»

About hard drives in general and specifically Western Digital and Seagate.
Seagate and Western Digital continued to have all the old problems. Or I should have this should be a news item, but the issue cannot be attached to a certain date. It's been going on for the past few years. Taking a look around Western Digital is getting some bad reviews. Of course, this is my subjective observation. Here is my reasoning on this. There many individual posts all over the Internet about people COMPLAINING about Western Digital 1 TB drive.
But the focus on ONE external drives in particular. One model sold on Amazon and there are over 200 customer reviews. One would imagine that certainly they sold more than 200 of these drives, but only about 200 of the customers decided to give any feedback to Amazon. A large number of reviews were very positive, giving the Western Digital portable drive pretty good AVERAGE rating. However, there are about 26 negative reviews. That really is bad news. That means about 10% of the users were very unhappy with the product. This is fairly strong empirical evidence that there is a problem with this product.
Yes, I mention Seagate at the start of this post. Seagate also has had some problems, however Seagate is a very large company and make so many different kinds of drives it's hard to find information specific to a product line. APPARENTLY, the technology used to create these extreme high density drives presents a problem to all of the manufacturers. They say the problems have been resolved, and maybe they have. Yet end-users are still are reporting problems in the first quarter of this year.
So, what's my point here? If you really need a high-capacity external hard drive, at 50 or $60 from your local Wal-Mart, Staples or maybe even your drugstore on the corner, the price is certainly very attractive. At the instant you get any trouble, time to make use of the warranty and send it right back to them.

Or do your our search for reports for the current year.
What do you think?

P.S. Seagate sales were very bad the end of last year.

Solve : Took out RAM - now BEEP?

Answer»

Hi Everyone,

I took out the ram from my Dell Dimension just to see what kind it was and to see if a new kind of RAM I pilfered from another
old Del would work in it.

I put it back where I found it (at least I think) now the computer won't start - it just beeps...

Is she dead? What can I do?

Any help GREATLY appreciated.

- Bilko
I assume you are now just using the original ram configuration and are not using the new ram. If that's correct, just open the case and reseat the ram. You should always discharge any static ELECTRICITY from your BODY by touching metal before touching ram. Thanks for your reply Allan.

I have reseated (the old) RAM.

Is it possible that it's in incorrectly?

I've tried it both ways and I seem to have the problem either WAY...If there are only two SLOTS and both sticks are the same size, then it doesn't matter. Try booting with one stick at a time. It's possible you damaged one of them. Quote from: Bilko on April 03, 2011, 04:34:02 PM

...I've tried it both ways and I seem to have the problem either way...
Doing that will damage the slots. They only insert one way. That's what the notch is for.I'm sure he meant he switched the location of the two sticks. Thanks to you both - cause I was trying them in all directions...

I'll give booting with one at a time a try tomorrow and let you know how it goes.

Thanks again!http://www.pcguide.com/byop/byop_InsertingtheRAMChips.htm
Thanks for your help everyone. I was able to reinstall the RAM successfully.

Does anyone know where I can purchase old RAM for older desktops?

Solve : plzz someone help me i need bois update file?

Answer»

Laptop MODEL type
IBM thinkpad

intel pentium(r) M processor
plzz some1 POST the latest bois update of above configuration... Hi,

Why do you need the BIOS update? The BIOS hasn't been changed since 2006. (A failed update can cause the machine to be permanently unbootable--so you only update if necessary.)

This looks LIKE a link to your machine. http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/product.do?subcategoryind=0&familyind=168403&brandind=10&doccategoryind=50385&modelind=0&doctypeind=9&validate=true&partnumberind=0&sitestyle=lenovo&template=%2Fproductpage%2Flandingpages%2FproductPageLandingPage.vm&operatingsystemind=49979&machineind=168407 You want to "Refine results" to BIOS.While I'm not as paranoid about updating the bios as many others are, I do agree it should only be done if there's a REASON to do so. And it's true that on older systems a failed bios flash can result in a dead SYSTEM. Good advice from our new member gvstn.

Are you experiencing any specific problems that make you think a bios update is called for?

FINALLY: This is an ugent matter now because I need to create a restore disk. Entire system is acting "goofy" (no virus or malware found) and I see doom approaching.
