Solve : PASSWORD RETRIEVAL?

Answer» I hope that someone here will be able to help me with my problem. I have a flash drive that I saved some of my important files on a year ago and I password PROTECTED it. The problem is that I have forgotten my password. Is there a program or a way to retrieve my password or go around it? Or am I basically screwed and those files are LOST forever? If your password was likely uncomplicated and short in length, you could try a dictionary attack on it. I am unaware of any hack tools to get past the security on the chip on the memory stick. At times like this I would write down all the most probable passwords I would have likely used and try variants such as Upper Case first Character, all caps, all LOWERCASE, and alpha-numeric combinations and/or phrases that I would likely USE.

My one router that I havent been into in like 4 years I lost my password to it, and I was able to create a list of the most likely passwords used, then try variants... I ended up finding out it was a VARIANT, and was able to get back into it without having to use reset button and then reprogram it all with ports and security.

Solve : Recommendations for a fan controller?

Answer»

I BOUGHT and installed a new 780i mobo and it does not seem to adjust my CPU fan at all. It is always on 100% and sounds like an F-22 on FULL afterburner, not that I don’t really mind since I’m in the USAF but I would like it to be a little quieter when I nap or just online in general. My older Gigabyte motherboard changed the RPM’s with a direct relationship to CPU load. I talked to EVGA and tried to change the fan controls in BIOS to manual at 5% but it still is at 100%. Therefore, I would like some recommendations for a fan controller. I would like one that can be controlled from the front and can have at least 4 fans attached to it. My CPU cooler is a ThermalTake 120 Ultra with a ThermalTake Smart fan attached.

Here’s a link to the fan: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=925072&CatId=802

PC specs:
EVGA 780i SLI mobo
Core 2 Duo E6600 3.2 GHz
EVGA GeForce 8800 GTS 640 MB
4 GB of OCZ SLI-ready RAM
500 GB Hitachi HHD (boot) and 1TB Hitachi (storage/backup)
Windows XP Pro SP2there is a variety of fan controllers to choose from, however, i have always been a fan of the scythe kama-meter.

http://www.scythe-usa.com/product/acc/015/sckm1000_detail.htmlThis may sound like a stupid question but when you hooked up the fan did you plug it into the motherboard or directly into one of the cables from the PSU.With a 3 pin fan connector how's he going to do that ? ?Before you go out and buy a hardware device to control fan speed, you could try SpeedFan as a SOFTWARE solution.  I don't know whether it will let you control fan speed with your specific motherboard but it won't cost anything to try it.  It's freeware.  And, you might want to keep in installed, even if it won't control fan speed for you; it provides other info on your system such as temperatures (CPU, hard drive, etc.), and voltage readings. SpeedFan does not WORK and I plugged it into the CPU fan connector on the mobo, i know it is because it is the only four pin connector, its tghe closest to the socket, and it says CPU fan.what do you think of the kama meter? It looks pretty good and seems better than most of the ones I have looked at. I will LOOK into getting one when I get back from my trip, unless someone has a better choice.

Solve : Windows won't load anymore?

Answer» HEY everyone, I have a dell inspiron 1520 that wont come up anymore.  I havent loaded any new sofware (or hardware) to it and when you power it on it comes to the menu that says windows failed to load and gives me two options.  I can choose to start windows normally, or start repair process.  It doesnt matter which one I choose because the screen will go blank and then immediately back to the windows didnt start screen.  I tried starting in safe mode, safe mode with networking, and safe mode with command prompt.  NOTHING works.....  Any ideas?

Thanks!Have you tried to enter the "repair" mode? What is the status of the laptop re warranty? What was the last thing you were doing just PRIOR to this occurrence? truenorthWhen I enter repair mode, it goes blank and goes back to the windows did not start screen.  I sent an email, shut it down, put it back in the case, opened it up four days later and it didn't ever come on.   Warranty is gone I am sure since it is a couple years old.   Thanks for your helpI've dealt with this kind of thing before;  Sometimes you can put in your windows restart disc that comes with your computer and boot from disc.  From there choose to repair windows. Granted nine times out of 10 this does not work, but I has worked for me once.  Another option is just to use the same disc to return your computer to the way you got it(you will loose everything on your hard drive, so i would remove the hard drive and backup on another drive on another computer).

This kind of thing usually happens to me when my computer EITHER shuts down during or freezes during a windows update. What is new or different since the last time everything worked PROPERLY (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?Nothing has changed since it worked last.   I sent a few emails, shut it down and it sat for a few days then wont come back to life.  I bought a new hard drive to reload windows and it said that no hard drive was found (although it did recognize it in bios).   I am completely stumped.   Any help is GREATLY appreciated. Are you using a windows disk to install the OS and is the CD set to boot first in the bios?I do not have a vista disk, it did not come with one (thaanks best buy).   When I tried loading XP on the new hard drive, windows said there was no hard drive installed....

Solve : AGP or PCI graphics card - to replace onboard graphics AND set up dual monitors?

Answer»

Hope someone can be of assistance here (apologies in advance for the stupid questions)

Ok I've just bought a 22" widescreen monitor and discovered my onboard graphics don't support widescreen resolutions (IE: 1680x1050). Also, I am getting a second, smaller monitor to set up dual monitors

I have one AGP and one PCI slot available (not PCI Express), very little cash, and lots of questions!

1. Which is better (AGP or PCI) and why? I presumed AGP due to the speed and the fact that it's dedicated to graphics, but after googling AGP VS PCI, I found loads of people SLATING AGP saying they're really unstable, likely to crash your system, etc

2. Are most modern cards likely to support widescreen resolutions?

3.1  Will it be easy to run 2 monitors off one card with 2 sockets (ie: 1 x VGA and 1 x DVI)?
3.2  And if so is this going to be ANOTHER factor that determines whether I go for AGP or PCI?
3.3  If the answer to 3.1 is "Yes", will I be ok to plug 2 VGA monitors into it via USE of the "DVI-VGA adaptor"?

4. How does the installation process go? I plug the card in, plug the monitor into it and switch on? Will it be natively recognised or will drivers be needed? And if drivers are needed do you have to add the card first? And if so does the monitor still activate and allow you to see what's going on to install the drivers?I'm not saying they're wrong, but I've never had a problem using AGP graphics cards over PCI based graphics cards, but I'm just one guy, and I've never bought a "cutting edge" card.  I'm guessing people complained about AGP cards due to a variety of issues -- drivers, etc.

1. AGP offers higher bandwidth.  Newer cards are available for AGP than for PCI.
2. Yes.
3.1. It's easy to run dual monitors with a single card as long as the card supports this, and you have the ports available.
3.2. Not really, it depends on the cards.
3.3. Yes, that's fine.
4. Uninstall previous video drivers, power down and insert the new card.  Boot up and disable onboard graphics if it's not automatically disabled.  Install the drivers for your new card (either form the CD, or better, from a download).  Display will be available without any drivers, it will just be low resolution.

What's your budget for this card, and do you just need it solely for dual monitors?  Or will you be gaming too? Quote from: GaZ_D200 on March 19, 2008, 04:01:44 PM

1. ... I found loads of people slating AGP saying they're really unstable, likely to crash your system, etc
Rubbish, non-sense.  AGP is fine.  I don't how much you can SPEND but, if you're in the U.S., take a look at this card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130207  Get it while the rebate offer is available.  I have a similar card, same brand, same chip (FX5500), but mine has 256MB of memory.  I run two 17 inch VGA monitors with it.

Solve : Installed More RAM Now No Onboard Soundcard?

Answer»

I have a P4M900-M4 motherboard from Biostar with onboard sound. I have two sticks of ram - ONE 2gb 667 mhz (unknown manufacturer) the other 1gb 667 mhz (Kingbox). When I plug both in, the onboard soundcard is not recognised. When I plug either one in either slot on it's own, the soundcard is recognised. I have TRIED changing the order of the ram, all the available clock speeds, and installed the latest BIOS and soundcard drivers. Windows shows there are no soundcard devices present with both sticks plugged in. Still waiting on a RESPONSE from the motherboard manufacturer. Anyone have any other suggestions? You could try the following:
With both sticks installed travel to Device Manager and right click the onboard sound controller and select remove...
Upon re-boot Windows will detect it and ask for a driver. Insert your MBoard driver CD that shipped with the machine and have Windows re-install the driver.Problem is, when I check in device manager the onboard soundcard is not listed in the FIRST PLACE. When I remove either stick of ram and reboot, it shows up.Do you have any Unknown Devices listed? Any yellow "?", or "!" marks? No unknown devices, fresh Win XP install.Have you re-installed the MBoard drivers after the clean install ? ?Just got the latest motherboard drivers from the manufacturers site and tested - still the same. All drivers (sound, video etc) are now the latest drivers. How many RAM slots and how do you have the sticks oriented ? ?
Is the 2G unknown reported properly both by itself and together with the other 1 ?Two RAM slots and I have tried orienting them both ways (2gb,1gb and 1gb,2gb).
Yes the 2Gb is reported properly by itself and together with the other 1.
I have also tried with and without the /3Gb switch in Win XP.

Solve : Video Card issues. I think.?

Answer»

Yeah, hey guys I've been having some weird video problems lately, and havnt been able to pin point a fix or even what they might be. Some sort of artifacts I'm guessing, but none like I've seen before. I was thinking maybe from overheating since these effects come and go. Few days it will be fine then a few days it wont. My temps seem to be low in the high 70's. Here's a screen showing what my problem is.

I havnt had the problem till just recently about a month ago. For a few years this LITTLE system has ran fine. My system specs are as follows. Thanks guys.

Problem   Current AGP speed is lower than maximum supported. This may cause PERFORMANCE penalty.
Appologies for the double post, but that first is very long. I just wanted to note the graphical issues/weird dots persist on the desktop as well. Not just when gaming. Happens more often on pictures to.I think this is an overheating issue.
Try opening your PC and cleaning the fans with a slightly damp cloth.  Take ESD precautions before opening the case and be careful not to damage anything.
When did the issue start?

P.S. welcome to the forums.it happend a few weeks after I did overclock. Using ATi Tool. I did get rid of the tool recently, I'd say about last Sat. when the problem was really becoming a pain. I even tried troubleshooting with underclocking, but no good. Seems to persist though even with the Ati Tool gone. Like I said though it comes, and goes. Just odd. Gunna try the quick cleaning structs you mentioned then wait a few hours see if maybe it clears.

Just hoping this isnt some permanent damage. Being a full time student, I'm finacially strapped . Oh, and thanks for such a quick reply. Gunna clean then post the outcome.Overclocking, if not done properly can cause damage to the video card and/or the motherboard so don't rule out the possibility.

Have you tried another monitor or videocard?
And when you said your temps are at 70 was that 70c or 70f?

Solve : $600 Gaming Machine?

Answer» https://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion/Wishlist/PublicWishDetail.asp?WishListNumber=8435626&WishListTitle=budget+pc

Some improvements could be made to processor and such but all together what do you think.here are a couple suggestions...

1. a better quality power supply. i recommend a corsair or OCZ PSU.
2. different RAM. i recommend this RAM. it is the same speed as the G SKILL RAM, but its 2gb's $50.00 vs. 1.5gb's $48.00. it also frees up one more RAM slot.

and as you stated, the processor could be better. Whoa that wasn't the ram i thought i added i thought i added 1GB sticks i guess that's why it came out a little lower than i expected lol.My thoughts exactly. I would get a pair of memory sticks as the mb does support dual channel memory.
I am not sure about that power supply either. I like SeaSonic. I agree with homer's suggestions.
Not sure about the CPU cooler either, it may SUFFICE but at 60mm, that's likely to be noisy.
Why the low profile cooler anyway, with such a roomy case?just going by price i mean that processor doesn't really need a big heatsink. You could always buy retail and use the stock heatsink.
I just think that the low profile cooler will be quite noisy and may run HOT with such a small FAN.

Solve : Missing space?

Answer»

Hi.
I recently acquired a new h/drive a Seagate 320g/b which I DECIDED to use as my main drive loaded win 7 all working O.K but discovered it was a slower drive than my original.

Fortunately I didn’t format my old drive a 1t/b Hitachi so I have reverted back to that as my main drive and am using the Seagate as a second drive.

The problem is I seem to have lost 22g/b of space off the second (Seagate) drive any thoughts or SUGGESTIONS welcome.
Thanks.
You haven't lost any space. Disk drive makers measure space in decimal (1 GB = 1000000000 bytes) but file systems measure space in binary (1 GB = 343597383680 bytes). 320000000000 bytes = 320 GB (decimal) = 298 GB (binary). 320 GB - 298 GB = 22 GB.

Solve : Widescreen monitor - Windows doesn't give options for widescreen screen res?

Answer»

Just bought a 22" widescreen monitor to replace my old 17" CRT, and all is great except the computer doesn't seem to have noticed there's been a change. Display properties is just giving me the same old set of screen resolution options - no 1680x1050 to be seen

So I went to the manufacturers site and downloaded the driver for it, but it's just three really small files, with no MENTION of where to put them and how to activate them.

Any clues? Cheers in advance. If this helps the monitor is Hyundai N220W, and I'm using onboard graphics not a dedicated cardOk I know I haven't given this very long but as well as being a *bump*, this reply will contain extra info

One of the "three really small files" is a .inf which I undersatand is a driver file minus the fancy set up app. Sooo, I tried to "add hardware" and browsed to the location of the file by using the "have disk" option. I attempted to open it and was greeted with "The specified location does not contain INFORMATION about your hardware" Your onboard video may not support that resolution...more info on the machine OS, etc.OS: XP Home Service Pack 2
Graphics: S3 ProSavageDDR
Monitor: Hyundai N220W

Can't think what else would be relevant so hope that's of help.

If it is that the resolution isn't supported, does that mean I need a graphics card? If so I have just bought a Matrox G2+ PCI card, which I did try to install at the same time but I gave up on because I couldn't find drivers for it and it came up in really low RES, really jerky, and didn't show the bottom bar. Do you know if that card would be sufficient? That card looks to be a bit older and may or may not get the job done...but wait for one of our Resident Video Experts such as Calum to stroll in with more advice...if you wish to run a monitor of the size successfully you can buy a very cheap video card with a max resolution of 1680X1050 may i ask what the native resolution is and i can help you pick out a cheap one. tell me which connectors you have on your motherboard

for pci i would recommend
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814133007I have a spare PCI and AGP, quite an old system though so no PCIE

Cheapness is the key here so how does that one look that I posted? Would it do the trick? Cheershttp://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131014&Tpk=nVidia%2bGeForce%2bFX5500%2b8x%2bAGP

cheaper and not from ebay.I ain't waiting on US shipping. And with that in mind does my ebay one look SUITABLE? If not i'll look up your suggestions on UK sites.yeah its basicly the same thingCool I'll get that ordered then!

Stupid question time... Is installing graphics cards easy? Is it simply a case of plug the card in, plug the monitor in, switch on and hope for the best?

Also do they usually auto detect or am I likely to need drivers? Sorry for asking silly questions but I don't wanna do all this then realise I can't see anything because drivers aren't installed. If that makes senseOne more thing...

Is AGP the better choice? I'm guessing so as it's dedicated to graphics whereas PCI is all-purpose... correct?

Solve : Audio is fine, but can't record sound -- help??

Answer»

I know my microphone used to work.

I have 2 and I've tried using both, non-battery operated, so no dead batteries. Using Sound Recorder, I tested both mics and got nada.

I tried downloading a Sound Card Analyzer from www.download.com but it couldn't even test the card.

The Audio Properties popup shows this: http://screencast.com/t/2K4KRIFC2Mj

Can anyone tell me why I can no longer record via microphone?
Any help would be appreciated.

Made any recent changes? Added a new sound card for example?Nope. No new sound card.

I last used the microphone about 4 months ago. Today I plugged it in and it fails to register input. I'm baffled. I'd say the sound card was dead, but my audio is working just fine.

Any other suggestions? 1. Have a NOSEY around your PC to see if the soundcard comes with any bundled software like mixers and stuff, make sure it's not muted.

2. Check the recording properties in Windows volume control to check nothing's muted in there

3. Open the "Sounds and audio devices" panel in control panel, click the Audio tab and check the selection in Sound recording.

4. Try updating your soundcard drivers? Or uninstalling and REINSTALLING them

5. Any other sound drivers/plugins that might be affecting it? DirectX and ASIO are 2 possible culprits if you have either or both of those.

Basically just have a dig around and check all sound-related settings1. Nope. Nothing's muted. No bundled software.
2. Nothing's muted.
3. Been there. See the link above in the first post for the settings.
4. That might be the nest step....
5. Have neither one.

Also, checked both microphones on a different computer - they work.

There have to be some settings somewhere that are affecting it. Other than that... I'm lost. Why does your link go to a Flash page ? ?
What other sound/audio programs did you install ? ?
Getting audio software to work properly can be extremely tricky...leaving out 1 detail can bugger a possible solution.

Why does your link go to a Flash page ? ?

Because it's a flash video of my "sounds and audio devices" from my CP. Thought someone here would see a setting that needed fixed, or at least be able to see my settings and be able to eliminate the problem. I find VISUALS are much more revealing than inept descriptions.

Quote
What other sound/audio programs did you install ? ?

None that I can remember.

Hence, the video.

I agreee and did so, but remember, the problem occurred before the installation.

Also, I am running Windows XP, thank you for that reminder, Betaa.

Anything else I should describe/show to help diagnose?

Solve : Looking for advice for new graphic's card?

Answer»

Hello everyone,

This is my first time posting on these forums.  I'm trying to figure out what new graphics card I should get for my computer.  I have a AMD Sempron 3000+, 2.00 GHz, with 512 MB of RAM.  It only has regular PCI slots and the AGP.  I'm not worried about the RAM requirements for the card because I'm about to invest in atleast another 1 GB stick.

The current graphics card I have is a e-GeForce FX 5500 (256 MB, at least that's what it SAYS on the box).

I've looked up the XFX GeForce 6200 http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3569995&CatId=318 and the GeForce 7300 GT http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3244230&CatId=318.  I am mostly worried about the power supply.  These say 300 Watts, but I just looked in my computer today and it says 250 Watt.  Any ideas on what i should do?  Will these WORK?First off, welcome to the forums.

So that we can help you . . .
What's your budget?
And what do you need this card for?
I would recommend a better power supply no matter what you go for, a 4-500W one will last through many upgrades to COME and they're not too expensive for a DECENT brand either.GeForce 7300 GT the other one cant HANDLE the memory that it is allotted, and yes i would recommend a new psu, having insufficient power can damage you computer.

Solve : Computer won't open windows, freezes when it does.?

Answer»

I have a Dell xps m1330, running windows vista. A week ago after running almost perfectly, it gave me the blue SCREEN, I restarted it and it wouldn't open windows. Then I got it to open and after a a few minutes it froze. With the exception of one random occasion it won't let me do anything past 5 mins then it freezes. So I did the start up repair (a few times), I did the check disk (a few times), no problems showed up. Once on the start up repair it said it had a problem that couldn't be fixed. I haven't seen that message SINCE. It runs in safe mode but I don't really know what to do in that mode to help the situation. Also I don't have a disc for windows vista. I just got this hard drive from Dell about 6 months ago and I happen to still have my old one that doesn't work well but I put the old one in and it hasn't frozen yet and it's running with no problem. Does this mean I need a new hard drive again already?? Is there any other checks I should do or software I should get before I purchase anything?

Thank you

MelissaPost the entire BSOD message...include the gibberish...I can't, it only happened that first time and I haven't seen it since after many many many restarts...anything else I can do to help? So can anyone help with this? Download BlueScreenView:
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html
unzip downloaded file and double click on BlueScreenView.exe to run the program.
when scanning is done, go to EDIT - Select All
Go to FILE - SAVE Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all of the content, and paste it into your next reply

However, if it only happened the one time and not since I wouldn't lose SLEEP over it.Thank you, I'll try that when I have Internet connection but it's still freezing EVERY start up, I'm just not getting a blue screen at all. Just chkdsk and start up repair, both are doing nothing for me Quote from: Melnic719 on March 18, 2011, 02:27:35 PM

but it's still freezing EVERY start up, I'm just not getting a blue screen at all. Just chkdsk and start up repair, both are doing nothing for me
I don't understand what you are saying.I'm saying that since this all started, the first time it shut down i got the blue screen, and now i can turn it on,  but it'll either not boot windows and freeze, or it will get me into windows and freeze within minutes. But the blue screen has never come back. So, yes, the blue screen only happened once but what I'm losing sleep over is the fact that I can't USE my computer still.  Also, I doubt I will be able to even download any software that will help me out because it wont work longer than 5 minutes...right now I have my old hard drive in, and it's working, but with errors. I'm trying to figure out if I can just buy a new hard drive and it'll be fixed, or if there's more to this. I guess with the limited information it'll be hard to figure out though.Your focusing on issues...instead of solutions here...
What happens if you boot into safemode ? ?
That should run long enough for a BSOD.No I came on here to find a solution, I'm pretty sure. Not sure what you mean by that. Im not familiar with how to find these solutions that's why I am here. Anyway I'll give it a try but I have to leave home for Internet to download the Bluescreenvision, it does work in safemode but can I connect to Internet in safe mode? I haven't used safemode before nowYes...
Use the safemode with networking option at bootup...

Solve : I need help bad... it wont turn on!!!?

Answer»

OK so here i am installing windows vista's new service pack 1 and it gets all done and powers down so i turn it back on it GOES through post and everything and gets to the windows loading screen and i get the blue screen of death so i restart it a few times only to get the same result.
after some looking around in bios settings i decide to stick the install disk in and try and restore it. first i CANT restore it because it doesn't see a valid windows install so i do start-up repair and after about 30 minutes it finishes and restarts now its loading through post and right about where windows should start to load it restarts into a continuous cycle. so i power it off read through a few websites and open up my case and unplug the 20 pin power connector and plug it back in except this TIME i plug in the +4 power as well and now i see it flash on then back off and now it will not power up.
i have tried removing the +4 pin and reseating the cmos battery along with reseating the ram to no avail.

Please help me!!!: ( i feel like a part of me is missing : (So,you can't boot in safe mode ? Also,is this a computer

What do you mean it flashed on? Did you have the power connected to the pc while moving wires around? Any activity at all? If not maybe a new power supply is in orderI tested my old power supply and came to the conclusion that it is the mobo GUESS i fried it. O well it was still under the 30 day return policy.

Solve : Bizarre problem?

Answer»

Ok, so I've recently built a gaming system completely from scratch so I could play bioshock and my system works fine, so i have some knowledge of hardware... but...

I was at j-b hifi with my girlfriend and her sisters when one of them said she wanted a dvd burner in their COMPUTER. I said no problem, as I know how to plug in the ide and power cords (It was LG, if that matters...). We got it back to their place and I proceeded to open their computer, remove their old cd-rom and plug the old one in with the same cords.
I closed the box back up, plugged everything back in and turned it on.
It ran through the bios and stuff and came up with an error along the lines of "Insert boot disk and press any KEY to continue"
I thought "ok, maybe i need to set the hard disk to the drive that the computer has to run off in the bios.
Did that and now the computer would shut down as soon as the windows xp loading screen was finished.
At this point I started to panic. so I plugged the old cd-rom back in.
Still got the same problem.
At this point I gave up for the night.

Having built a new computer recently, I had my old pc tower sitting in my room, minus a hard-drive so I figured if all else failed, i'd plug their old hard-drive into my computer and they could use that until i worked out what was wrong.
I tried switched the cords around in their old box a bit, but it made no difference, so I plugged their hard-drive in to my old computer and bizarrely, I still got the same problem.
PLEASE! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE! HELP ME regain my honour.
-TomSomething tells me it may not be the drive. Did you notice any static shock while you were installing the new drive?

im thinking it would be the hard drive...
because it was this same hd that youput into your old computer right?
if you can find another hd(maybe from your recnet build) and try it in their computer.
post back!tvellalott, No mention of whether the "new burner drive" was replacing a one and only drive which was removed. Was there more than one drive in it? If so were the jumper pins set to the PROPER configuration. If it replaced a slave drive then the new one would also have to be set to slave. Generally my experience is that new drives are usually sold with the pins set to master so if it was replacing a one of then this would not normally have created your problem. Did you connect the ide cable to the new drive at the same position on the cable as it was connected to the one you removed?truenorththe problem that your having is the OS is corrupt. You need to re-install the XP Quote from: mr_skipper24 on March 09, 2008, 12:17:43 PM

you cannot simply remove a harddrive from one computer and place it in another and expect it to work.

these changes you made in the computer, was the power off? not off like you pushed the power button, but off as in you unplugged it.

i suggest popping out the CMOS battery and leaving it out for about 10mins. make sure the system is unplugged before doing this! after ~10mins. reinsert it. plug the comp back in. boot the comp up. access the BIOS. does the dvd burner appear in the BIOS? does the harddrive appear in the BIOS? next go to boot priority or boot sequence, whichever one your BIOS uses, then make sure your harddrive boots first, then WHATEVER other components you have you can set to boot in any order.I grounded myself before playing with the bits.
I should mention that I've always been confused with the whole master/slave thing, do you have to physically change something on the drives or is it completely in the software of the computer.
The old computer only had the one cd-rom drive, a floppy disk and the hdd.
The power was completely unplugged, no cord was plugged into the mb or power supply.
Now that you mention it, when I looked in the bios, i noticed that it only said "Hard Drive", "CD-ROM" & "Floppy Disk" instead of Sony32-16x or whatever it usually says... Quote from: tvellalott on March 09, 2008, 03:10:25 PM
I should mention that I've always been confused with the whole master/slave thing, do you have to physically change something on the drives or is it completely in the software of the computer.

They are called jumpers.

There will be a label on the drive showing where the jumper or jumpers need to go to make the drive a master or a slave.

Generally, if you have 1 hard drive and 1 cd/dvd drive you will have two IDE ribbon cables plugged into the motherboard. On one cable will be the hard drive, set as master, and on the other cable will be the CD/DVD drive also set as master.

You could possibly have just one IDE cable with the hard drive set as master and the CD/DVD drive set as slave, but this may not be good for performance.

yes, tv, I think you answered your own question!

It's that whole master/slave thing -- see how the jumper was set for the CD-ROM you removed -- hopefully, there will be something on the drive itself...then you can match the setting for the replacement drive.tvellalott, do as i suggested earlier and see if that clears the problem.

As some of the others suggested you need to check the jumpers on the new dvd burner to make sure they are set the same as the old cd rom.
If the rom is master so should the dvd burner(assuming you install in the same postion as the rom was).
It should have been as easy as falling off a log.

gregOk, update.
I set the jumper to slave on the new dvd drive and reset the bios. It recognises the two drives as slave and master, as their names come up in the bios, however the computer is still turning off for no reason.
It isn't turning off at any particular point, just randomly and quite quickly. I tried plugging in the two drives with different power cords but same problems.
Helpis it perhaps overheating? is the CPU fan spinning? is the heatsink free of dust?Hey i just put together a computer and i used my old hard drive with OS and i went to load the drivers for the cpu and it will only go to the slecting for safe MODE ect and it will ust restart from there and run in a circle can you please help

You dont have a SOUND card on here.  How are you going to pay for it?Hi Rob follow this link to PC Magzine

I figured as much,  Usually on board sound isnt that great.  When I made my rig, I SET it up so that I could have as many speakers as I wanted Dual or Surrond.  This is the advantage of the card.  So you know.I can do better than your current list, I'm sure . . . give me a while and I'll post again with a build.
Oh, and onboard sound is usually fine, but for gaming or serious audio use, it's really not.

Edit: OK, here's the build.  bear in mind this is without a monitor, OS or mouse/keyboard . . . I would guess you have the first and last, not sure if you have a legal OS disk somewhere, otherwise add at least £50.

Case
PSU
Sound card
DVD burner
Graphics card
RAM
CPU
HDD
Motherboard

Compared to the rig you put together, this has a PSU and sound card, also a better graphics card.
The RAM is faster and from the UK rather than US too.
HOWEVER, some may say the case is not as good (personally I love this case, it's deceptively cheap), and it does have a slower CPU.
Finally, it's also cheaper, at £343.98 excluding delivery.

Hope this helps somewhat.with the extra cash i would get a new cpu and mobo Quote from: fpsmitch on March 16, 2008, 12:54:23 PM
with the extra cash i would get a new cpu and mobo
What extra cash?i though the EURO was about 1.5x usd?$1 (U.S. dollar) = ~£2 (Great Britain pounds)
Therefore $800 = ~£400, which would be why the title is $800 gaming rig, and in the original post it says £400.wihtout that cpu it is less than 300 euro.
that eaves around 100 euro(~200usd)

http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?Quicklinx=4MMF&CategorySelectedId=11147&PageMode=1&NavigationKey=11147,4294958803
that puts it extremely close to the original budget( )*ahem*

1£=$1.55729 as of 2008.03.16 19:31:30 UTC

found xe.comhah! i knew i saw it somewhere!
thanks homer
(that leaves even more money for processor and mobo upgrade!) It's pounds, NOT Euros.
And that CPU is a BAD choice, the E8200 is far superior.
Also, if the OP needs an OS, then that puts them over the budget.
If an OS is not necessary then the cash saved should be used for upgrades, however I think a better graphics card would probably be a better choice than blowing it all on a faster CPU.

And homer - at xe.com I'm seeing £1 GBP = $2.02679 USD.i thought UK used Euros...

but your right, £1 GBP = $2 USD.

this leads to the question, is the OP paying in pounds or euros?

Hi. I have been having a big problem with a newly installed 500GB hard drive. When I first installed it, windows did not DETECT the hard drive and I had to go to drive manager to create a drive letter for it. Whenever I try to put files in it the whole computer freezes and locks up to where I can't even move the mouse and no sounds come out, also the keyboard flashes the LED's on it and then turns off the keyboard but the computer stays on with the screen in place. Whenever I plug it in it WORKS fine if I put a few very small files in it like megabytes in size but if I put a GB or anything like it at ONE time it lacks up my PC. It can handle many GIGS of info but you have to put it in a few megs at a time and whenever you shut the PC down and reboot with the hard drive still attached it wont go past the bios boot up screen. Solve : Philips Monitor problem!?

Answer»

Hi there!

I did a search for this problem, there are two threads, however none of them HOLD any answers. So I'll try one more time.
I have a PHILIPS 200XW monitor, when I plug it in my pc/laptop, the monitor shows the image for about 1-2 secs, after that it turns black. I can get my VIDEO signal through, but the screen turns black shortly after. I've tried it on different electricity networks, and tried switching the cables around.
Any help or hints WOULD be GREATLY appreciated.

Sincerely yours!Could be the backlight, or a problem in the electronics that drives the display. You need to take it to a repair center or else buy a new one.

Hi,

When I WENT to turn on my computer today, nothing happened. Over the last couple of weeks, when I pushed the power BUTTON, I noticed it took longer and longer for the fans and lights to come on but today, nothing.

I have tried removing the second HDD I installed a few weeks back but it did nothing to change the problem.
i have also looked at all the connections inside and everything seem to be in place; the green light on the MB is EVEN on...

Ideas?

Thanks!

Solve : Building My First PC?

Answer»

Hello everyone! Thanks for your time in looking into this post, as it is my first. I am planning on building a PC in the near future, and since I'm fairly unfamiliar with computer hardware, I would like suggestions if anyone has the time!

I'm wanting to keep it at roughly $1,000 ($1,200 being my "max"), so keeping that in mind, what would you guys recommend? I was thinking of an Intel i7 & GTX 580 for the CPU and GPU, respectively, but I'm not sure if others would be superior for the price point I'm looking for. I've not researched any other components extensively, so help on that would be great as well!

The primary application of this machine will be GAMING (Battlefield 3, anyone? ), but I would also like to try out some editing software, such as PHOTOSHOP, Blender, After-Effects, etc. If you have any questions, feel FREE to ask and I'll try to elaborate more if need be.

Thanks in ADVANCE!
VenomWhat type of games do you play?

I think the GTX 580 may be a little bit overboard for that price range... I mean HECK you'd be at 300 for the i7 (I'll assume you're going for the 2600k) and 500 bucks for the GPU... then you'd only have $400 left over to get everything else.  Why not get a GTX 470 or a HD6950 GPU (techpowerup.com can show you how to flash the bios for a free upgrade to the 6970) and leave more for other peripherals?  You should be able to run pretty much at max settings with either of those video cards (then replace it in 12-24 months or whenever you need it. Do you already have a gaming monitor

Anyway, if you went with a GPU around 250, 2600k around 300, motherboard for another 150-200 (see the ASUS P8P67 LE or the Sabretooth P67), threw in a HAF Mid-tower 932 for 100 (expect around 150 for a full), windows 7 (100 bucks) then you still have 300 bucks for memory etc.. and you'll probably need every dime.

We just got a new flat screen monitor and it's great...except for some webpages.  and I do mean some webpages!  Is it possible to fit web pages to your screen?  This website is the full screen but other ones are just in the centre of the screen and too small to read.  I have set the text on it to large but it doesn't seem to change or help.  is there anything I can do about this?

Thanks. Can you post one or two websites to demonstrate what you mean?  What is your screen resolution set to?

I am amazed at how MANY people run their computer at 600X800 resolution. Quote

Is it possible to fit web pages to your screen?  This website is the full screen but other ones are just in the centre of the screen and too small to read.
I believe he means that some web pages only use part the space in his browser window; in other words, his browser window shows empty space on one or both sides of the web page.

The obvious cause for this is simply the web page design.  The developer has created a fixed width page.  The web developer can ALSO set font to only be displayed at a specific size.I guess I assumed this problem only started when he got his new monitor which would leave me to believe some SETTING on the computer had changed.

As soybean already said, the links to a couple of the web sites would be helpful. You could also lower your resolution and that will MAKE everything bigger on your monitor but it wont look as good.

I suspect that it is my graphics card. I'm considering taking it to the place I bought it and asking them to take a look at the card since it is still under warranty.

Any other suggestions/ Advice??
If it is still under warranty i woulld not HESITATE to return it for a replacement...

Solve : Audio Driver Fail?

Answer»

I just got a new computer a this morning. I've installed all the drivers from the DISKS, but the one thing on the motherboard disk that wouldn't install was the audio driver (it was just dark and I couldn't click it). I went to the MSI website and downloaded the "Realtek High Definition Audio Driver" for my 870A-G54 motherboard. I restarted my computer but I can only hear sound coming out 1 of the 5 OUTPUT jacks...The back jacks DETECT when something is plugged in, but only the "Line Out" jack actually produces sound. The front jacks (one mic and one headphone) don't even respond when something is plugged in, let alone actually output sound. I've double-checked that all the volumes are on full in both the XP volume control and the Realtek HD Audio Manager program. I didn't put together this MACHINE, I paid one of the technicians at Tiger Direct to do it for me so something like this wouldn't happen

Anyway, I really hope I get help soon, I don't want to bring it back to the store and wait for them to fix it...thanks in advance. What's odd is as soon as I made the OP, I plugged in the motherboard cd and the audio driver showed up. Too bad it was the same one I installed previously, and made absolutely no difference.once i had no sound for no reason at all. went to bios and restarted them to DEFAULT and the sound appeared.Congrats on the new computer

One exclamation mark on "SM Bus Controller"...not sure what it is exactly, but it's under "Other Devices".

It's the controller for the system management bus. An SM bus controller error means you need to install the chipset driver. The chipset are a set of microchips on your motherboard that carry information back and forth between all of your system devices and the cpu.

If you go here:
http://www.msi.com/service/download/driver-2592.html
you can download your the latest version of your chipset driver from your motherboard manufacturer. OK, just installed the new driver. No !, ?, or X in the device manager...checking speakers now...the back ones work, the front jacks still don't get detected.I would open it up and make sure they're connected. This is a diagram of your motherboard.

This is the connector for the front jacks, labled JAUD1 in the diagram.

Notice there is no pin on number 8. You should be able to tell which pin is which by looking for the missing pin no matter which way you have the board oriented.

Solve : connecting video output?

Answer»

I have a Compaq Presario v4000 Laptop and will need to use the screen at TIMES for an Apple Mac MINI. What would be the BEST way to connect the video output from the Mac mini straight ONTO my Presario screen? Thanking you, RabtrueThat's not really possible on a laptop.
The laptop screen is hardwired directly to the output from the graphics card in the laptop.
The closest you can come is to buy a video capture card.
Then you can use video capture software to SHOW the output from the Mac mini on the laptop.

Solve : First build nightmare?

Answer»

A friend of mine and I talked my cousin into building his own computer since it was really quite easy and we could walk him through any questions or issues.

He decided to go with quite the beast -

Mobo: XFX MB-N780-ISH LGA 775 Nvidia nForce 781i SLI Intel motherboard
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4 GHz LGA 775
VGA: EVGA 512-P3-N801-AR GeForce 8800GT 512 MB 256 bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0x16HDCP (SLI ready)
RAM: OCZ SLI ready edition 4GB (2x2GB) 240 pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel
HDD: 2 x  Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD7500AAKS 750 GB 7200 RPM SATA
ODD  Lite-On 20x DVD+R DVD Burner with LIGHTSCRIBE SATA
PSU: PC Power & Cooling S75QB EPS12V 750 W
Case: Antec 900 Mid Tower
PS/2 Keyboard for installation and testing
USB mouse converted to PS/2 for installation and testing

His parts came in, he put them together, and went to install Windows XP SP2 OEM last weekend.  When the installation got to about 60% on "Copying Files," he received errors that certain files could not be copied (p3.sys being the first). He tried a couple of times, and did get the install to go through once, but he was having some issues with his display and mouse, panicked, and tried to install again. From then on, all installations failed. Some attempts were with QUICK format, some with full format.

After some research, our first suspects were either the media or the RAM.  We told him to download the UBCD on his laptop, burn a copy, and boot it in the new build so he could run some memory tests.  He ran Windows Memory Diagnostic in the extended tests on both sticks simultaneously. No errors were reported.

In the meantime, I had him create an ISO of his XP CD and transfer it to me. I burned the image and installed it on a test machine (1 ghz Celeron, 256 MR PC100 RAM, 13.6 GB IDE HDD, IDE optical) It installed start to finish with no issues.

He ran memtest from the UBCD on his RAM, both simultaneously and individually for at least 8 hours. No errors were reported in either case.

My next thought was to test the HDD's, so I had him again boot to the UBCD and run SeaTools 1.09.  However, SeaTools from the UBCD would not let him get past the EULA screen. He tried a straight burn of SeaTools 1.10, still no go.  He installed a 3.5" floppy drive that I had sent him and tried to run SeaTools 1.10 from there, but the same lock up occurred.

He is not able to test his optical drive, as he does not have another to swap out at the moment.

Just as a test to see if he could at least boot to an OS, my next thought was to try to boot to an Ubuntu 7.10 live CD.  I had him download both the 32 bit and 64 bit versions. (I was watching on a web cam, by the way) We tried the 32 bit, and as it nearing the point that the GUI would APPEAR, there was a note about how low graphics would NEED to be used. I had forgotten that the 8800 GT was too new of a card to have drivers on the live CD.  After we closed this dialog box, we got a blinking cursor and nothing else.  It seemed to be hung up. Now, granted, perphaps we did not wait long enough (30 - 60 seconds, but I would not think it would take this long on a machine like this.  So I wrote that off as an issue with display adapter compatibility. I do not know enough about Linux to troubleshoot this one.

On a complete hunch, I watched as he tried to install Windows again. This time we only had one HDD installed.  I had him create a 10 GB partition, quick format, and install into it.  This time XP installed.  We tried again, deleting the partition and installing into the entire drive.  This time it would NOT install.

Now we were convinced that the issue was either due to the size of the HDD, or a faulty HDD.  We pulled this HDD and installed the other one by itself, this time using the entire drive as the partition size.  Windows DID install on this drive in this partition.

Not completely convinced, I asked him to try it again, with the same parameters.  This time the errors reappeared.

We are utterly befuddled.  He is going to make a trip to visit (3 hours away) this weekend so he and and I and our friend can try to troubleshoot.  Between myself and our friend, we have components that we can switch out for testing.

Where should we start?  I figure trying a different optical drive or HDD would be a good place to start (perhaps even PATA rather than SATA)  Could it be the mobo?

What is a good boot utility to test the HDD besides SeaTools?

Is this worth the time or should he just return everything to NewEgg and start over?

PKI think you've been quite thorough in your diagnosis...
The 2 main suspects in this scenario are the first HDD and the Optical drive.
Since drive 2 took the installation properly it lessens the odds of the Optical drive being bad.
Why not just do the build on the drive it installed properly and really scream the machine thru it's paces ? ?
In the meantime return the offending HDD to newegg.
He may want to purchase a backup DVD burner just in case the optical is the culprit but i really think it's the first HDD.

Nice Build BTW !

High end MBoards seem to be all having issues lately...i think the article was at Tom's Hardware awhile back but i'm not convinced this is the case here and i've done quite a few builds recently with absolutely no issues except a failed onboard NIC on an MSI Platinum. However, if you look again you will see that the second HDD also failed on the second attempt at installing into the entire drive.  Otherwise I would agree with you.

So are you now leaning toward ODD?

Oh yes, when we get this problem figured out (or are at least reasonably sure) we will indeed make it cry with stress tests.

PKSorry didn't catch that part...The optical drive would now be the prime suspect, followed by the RAM then the MBoard.
Did you run MemTest or just the Windows memory checker from the UBCD...i believe both are included in the .iso.In my experience when Windows halts during installation with a message about file copying errors, the cause is very often memory problems. Incompatible or badly seated or faulty RAM. This kind of problem can come and go, so you could pass a Memtest and still have the problem.
That is what we gathered too - a RAM issue.

But he tested the crap out of the RAM with both memtest and WMD.  He tested both sticks at the same time and individually.

He even swapped out with some RAM from a guy at work. Still no go.

PKRAM or RAM controller (chipset on motherboard) 1.i dont think its the RAM if it was it wouldnt have installed in the first place even on just one drive, and the memory test would have failed.
2. check your BIOS HDD settings and make sure that its not on ANYTHING goofy.
3. im willing to bet that the ODD is not the problem either. if it was it wouldnt have installed xp on first HDD, even if it did finish, it would have screwed files up.
i would guess that something isnt right in your BIOS. also it could be a bad SATA port on your mobo. i would try the second HDD drive on the one that the first HDD was on. or better yet, swap the SATA ports on your MOBO so that your ODD is on the port that the second HDD was on, and the HDDs on the ports you have used. just a thought. Well, 6 hours, 18 Windows installs, 2 XP Pro CD's, 2 optical drives, 2 systems, 3 hard drives, and 3 geeks later, we think we figured it out.

The theory is that his XP Pro CD had a flaw that his optical drive was especially sensitive to, but not on EVERY install (though usually every other install).

Every failure started at the p3.sys file.

The true "tell tale" was when we installed his ODD into my friends computer and used the suspected media and got a failed install.  The same drive worked fine though multiple installs with a different CD and the CD worked fine through multiple installs with a different ODD. There was apparently just something about that CD that his Lite-On did not like.

I am guessing that the ISO that he created on his laptop and sent to me must have been a good read (different ODD).  We tried that disk too with no problems.

So, I think he is going to contact MS to get a replacement CD and use the ISO he made in the meantime.  I know its a bit silly to go through the trouble when he has a working copy, but its the principle of the thing.

He may also RMA his ODD just in case the sensitivity is a defect of some sort.

That was fun.

PK

Was there another XP CD used in this equation that confirmed this ? ?
Did you swap out the ODD to test this ? ?
What HDD was the successful installs to ...one or both ? ?Yes.

Yes.

That did not seem relevant. We were looking for a failure more than a success.  Once the suspected media failed in the suspected ODD on the other guy's system (and HDD), it seemed prettty apparent that the combination of the media and the ODD was the culprit.

PKGood solid detective work on your part.Ill say.  Nothing like finding a needle in a haystack

Solve : Wipe out my hard drive?

Answer»

My son's Dell Computer is infected with a virus. It won't even allow the virus scan to run. It seemed to have wiped out all of his settings. I want to WIPE out the hard drive and start over. All I have is the OS CD (Windows XP). He doesn't have any drivers except to his Wireless USB.

Can SOMEONE tell me step by step how to wipe out the hard drive to start over? Do I need anything else, other than his OS CD?

Thanks for your help, he is going crazy! sure, make sure you dont need anything backed up.

you will need to SET the BIOS to boot from cd which it already likely does and reboot the computer while the xp cd is in the rom.

the screen will display "press any key to install" while booting

do that and that will start the windows xp installation.

delete the partition and remake it

and this should clear is off

drivers are typically no biggie,

as long as you have the network card your good to go you can always download i strongly SUGGEST installing an antivirus before going on the internet.also very true, I use avg free...

Solve : No OS on my old AST laptop?

Answer»

I found one of my old ast LAPTOPS and formatted the cluttered harddrive. when I went to install my 95 on it (because it only has floppy drive) it said invalid system disk replace and strike any key. As you may know there is a series of 13 disks and I tried the first and that message came up. In the BOOK to help you through the install procedure it only offers 2 options: install from earlier version of windows and install from DOS. and I cannot seem to GOT into BIOS either. The laptop doesn't prompt me to push any buttons it just goes to the message earlier stated can I install any OS from scratch and then upgrade it to 95 or am I making all this WAY to complicated?Just for fun,  visit   www.bootdisk.com and download what you need to make a bootable floppy.

Make a boot floppy, and then try to boot from that.    Just to see what happens.

doesn't work. it did something the first time but then it stopped. after it did that something it rebooted and said invalid system disk all over again and whatever I do I can't repeat that result.

Yes lots. PCI-E has a far greater data BANDWIDTH than PCI.

How about a GeForce GTX 480 $400 Or a GeForce GTX 570 $350  [Check your power supply first!]
They're apparently the 2ND & 3rd best GPU's at the moment. (Performance wise that is, stability, power CONSUMPTION & heat dissipation I have no idea about).

Solve : Dual Core skipping?

Answer»

Hello, I Recently bought a new Motherboard, Ram, and an AMD X2 5000+ black edition, and whenever I try to play a game I will play just fine for a bit then suddenly my fps will drop to 1 then go back up again. So far it has done this in every game, and whenever I am in Ventrilo people say that I am skipping. I have tried every Dual-Core Optimization things too, and some of them helped a bit. I have ALSO tried to see if it was my graphics card by taking it out and using my on board VGA but it did the same thing. Please help me I am desperate. Specs Below.

Motherboard: ECS 780G
Processor:  AMD X2 5000+ black edition
RAM: A-DATA 2GB DDR2 800
Graphics card: EVGA 7600GS
PSU: Raidmax 420Watt

Version of Windows?
Did you reinstall Windows after the hardware change?

Windows XP SP2

I did reformat, but only the 10Gb one which has windows on it. The 320GB one has all of my GAMES and music and stuff. Do you think i would have to reformat that one too? Because i have at LEAST 200GB of stuff on it and i really don't want too.Actually i would suspect that the 10G HDD is the weak link in this setup...that drive has to be at least 6 years old or more...actually, i had my processor over clocked to 3.0 from 2.6 and i put it back to 2.6 and i don't seem to have the problem anymore.

And about the hard drive... When i bought the SATA drive i didnt know that you had to have sata drivers to make the sata your main drive and i dont have a Floppy drive or a cd burner. You could put the SATA driver on a USB drive...really?most defcan some one tell me how or link me to a website with instructions?Explain what your intentions are...you stated you don't want to format the SATA so installing on there is out of the question,
Unless you have a backup strategy for the drive installing an OS on it is going to wipe it out.
If you plan on adding another SATA drive to install XP to simply DLoad the SATA drivers from the MBoard site and put them on a USB drive.
Then remove both drives and plug in the new drive. Boot to the XP CD and early on in the install you will see an F6 prompt to install RAID?SATA drivers...point it to the USB drive and continue with the XP install.
After all drivers have been installed and everything is WORKING re-connect your other drives. If i do just reformat the one sata i have and take out that old IDE, will the speed increase be noticable? If so how much and if it is a good amount than i may just reformat it.

Also, now whenever I am ingame and i hold down a button for along time, like in CS:S if i hold down TAB than i skip around and lag alot.So do you guys think this is a CPU problem? Or maybe a Motherboard problem? Because I am thinking of returning the CPU and getting a better one for a couple more bucks. But if i don't need to than i won't.Bump for great justice. There will be a performance gain going from the 10g to a SATA drive for your OS...

Solve : how to disable hard driver fan?

Answer»

hi, my hard drive fan went and i need to disable it in my bios.
it says:
Alert! hard drive fan failure. Strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run the setup utility.

I have a Dimension 9200c

Vista
4gb ram
cpu 2.13 intel

thanks a lot guys. It may not be a HD fan but a CPU/Heatsink Fan attached over that needed to be replaced. How many CPU tower fans being used and have you tried reinserting them? its the hd fan not the cpu fan. Hard Drive fan failure? Interesting...

It sounds like you are trying to follow this advice:
http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/desktop/f/3514/p/19286795/19689895.aspx

If your hard drive has a fan, disabling it will not solve the problem. It will just increase the potential for damage.

Do you have experience opening up the side of your computer and physically interacting with the hardware?yes I do have experience opening up the side of your computer and physically interacting with the hardware.
My HD Fan doesn't work... my question is without this fan can it lead to more problems. I always had hd without fans.... this computer is the first.

thanks  Have you thought about replacing the fan?     http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=hard+drive+fan&x=0&y=0replacing the fan is on the mind right now lol

will it give me hd issue if i don't?

the reason i ask is because this is the first pc i know that ever had a hd fan.

thanks Unplug it.i did unplug the fan... will i still have hd issue without it
i still get this error message with it unplug
thanks I believe the answer regarding a possible heat issue is that it depends on the air circulation in your computer case without the hard drive fan.  How many fans are INSIDE your computer and what's their air FLOW direction?  Typically, any fan in front of the computer draws air in and fan(s) on back are pointed outward to move warm air out of the case.

ALSO, removing the non-functioning hard drive fan may be the best approach since it's presence might be a slight obstruction to air flow around the hard drive.

Also, you might install HWMonitor and see whether it give you a hard drive temperature reading.  I've used it on my Windows 7 system and it works well.
i'm going to buy a new hd fan so it will remove the error message and no heat issues... the tower is thin so i do need more air flow.
I'll let you know if everthing went ok.
Thanks everbody! The fan works now but i still get the error... what gives

Thanks Quote from: Slayer666 on March 07, 2011, 05:26:49 PM

Did you connect the fan to the HD FAN header on the motherboard, or is it a Molex plug?

Either way, Hard Drives don't generally COME with fans, they are installed afterwards, and therefore are usually completely unnecessary. (If they were necessary then the HD manufacturers would include one- which they don't.)

Right now my HDs are hovering around 71 degrees. I haven't had a problem with any of them.

Also, you could simply disable the message in the CMOS setup, I think.  HD FAN header is connected to the hd itself on the motherboard.
in the bios configuration... i don't see it at all unless i miss it and i look like a 100 times.

I am using Windows 7, 64bit, a quad core processor and 4 gigs of ram.    When I try to access the "HP Solution Center"  it tells me that the installation was not complete.        I recently re-installed Windows 7 because I was no longer able to install any new programs.  That problem seemed to GO away after I re-installed Windows 7...   Maybe not,
   Anybody have any ideas??

I had a similar problem trying to install my HP printer/scanner.

Remove any usb cables and STICKS.

Remove the HP software using    UNINSTALL a program in Windows 7 cntrl panel.

To save having to reinstall the entire OS if something goes wrong. Set a system restore point before before installing new software.

Install the HP software BEFOFE connecting the printer.

But now ,the only usb device that is connected to my comp is the printer.

That got it going!!

Hope this helps.

Solve : Built PC, no sound?

Answer»

I just built a COMPUTER.  When I got everything loaded up, I'm not getting any sound through the speakers.  The sound card is integrated onto the motherboard which you can see here:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16813157176

The drivers for the sound card are updated.  In Windows, the Mixer shows that sound is being played so I don't think it's a software issue.

The speakers give feedback when you touch the 1/8" tip to your finger or another surface so I know the speakers are working.

I have plugged the speakers into the AUDIO port in the back of the computer, and I also tried to plug them into the headphone port in the front of the computer.  It can't be that one of the ports is fried or one of them would work.

I'm at a loss at this point.  Any ideas?Oddly enough, I just tried a third-party driver which fixed the PROBLEM.  Never mind.  Quote from: spum on MARCH 20, 2011, 09:11:53 AM

Solve : Having some issues..?

Answer»

Hello, having some minor problems with this other computer of ours, well major problems. So about a year ago our Dell studio xps 435mt got struck by lightning and it went through the phone line, our house insurance wanted us to take it to some dinky computer tech place to just get it diagnosed, and they ended up putting a POWERSUPPLY in it well they didn't hook it up just put it in there... So my father hooked it up and it and it was just turning on the tower and the monitor would kinda get a grey tint then go back to black and repeat before settling on black, and the router's ethernet light would stay off. So I rehooked our older dell(the one I'm on now) and the monitor is working good and the ethernet light on the router came on(obviously if im online) so we took the studio xps to geek squad at our local Bestbuy, and one of the "agents" helped us and said that we hooked up the powersupply properly and that they'd do some diagnosing, well when he hooked it up to their monitor it did the same thing, so he said it'd be a couple days and it'd COST 60 dollars to diagnose. Well we get a call saying it's done and it checked out alright and they did a 5HR heat test etc etc. We get it back bring it home and it does the same thing. Tower light is WHITE and is running but monitor is doing the same thing and the router is saying no ethernet. So we take it back to geek squad, and they run some tests again and install a new driver so they said and everything checked out alright. Well bring it home and its doing the same thing! So I was wondering if anyone here could help me in this situation and any opinions would definitely be welcomed. We're taking it back up there in a couple days, and if they say its ok again I was going to see if they would come hook it up for free so they can see that it's not okay!

Thank you for reading this and thank you for your input and thoughts. When you went to pick it up the second time, did they PLUG it up and show you that it was working and connecting to the internet? Nopers. He said he updated the driver and that its working now, and that it's all good to go. I figured he'd needed to be on the internet to get the driver but maybe I was wrong, or maybe they didn't even update the driver. Pretty sure next time I'll demand that. Thank you

Solve : My soundcard and speakers not working??

Answer»

Ok guys here is the problem. I recently did a system restore on my computer. I went and put all my music back on my computer and when I went to play a song I GOT an ERROR on Windows Media Player saying ---

"Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There may not be a sound device installed on your computer, it may be in use by another program, or it may not be functioning properly."

I thought it was my speaker so I plugged them into my Ipod and they worked fine. I am guessing it is my sound card, and I am praying I don't need a new one. I don't know if the system restore had anything to do with it, but I just wanted to give all the info. Maybe I need to download a driver?? Any help would be awsomeYes, you checked your speakers independently, and you know they work.

Have you looked in Device Manager to see the status of your sound card?

In Win XP:  Start --> Control Panel --> Performance and Maintenance --> System --> Harware --> Device Manager --> Sound, video, and game controllers

Is there a yellow question mark (device not found) or exclamation point on yellow background (conflict)?

This will help establish whether you need to reload a driver -- most likely at this point.I looked under sound, video and game controllers and the only thing there is:
Audio Codecs
Legacy Audio Drivers
Legacy Video Capture Devices
Media Control Devices
Video Codecs

There is a yellow question mark for "other devices" and a few things listed under that but thats about itI agree, look up the MANUFACTURER on internet and get latest driver, more often than not you only get these errors when there is a driver problem !the manufacturer of the sound card??In Control Panel, look under Sounds, Speech and Audio Devices.   Under the Audio tab, it should show the default device being used for sound playback.  What does that show, please?yes of the soundcard.

REASON:  Often the hardware is on a shelf (X) period of time in a shop, meanwhile the manufacturer has made a few modifications and upgrades which you can download from their site, these will not necesarily be on the instalation CD with the  soundcard as that is a physical CD if you get me !

I always check their website to see if there is a more updated driver than what came in the box !  Sometimes it makes a difference, sometimes not, but worth a try.

Ofcourse, CHECKING what everybody else is saying will also help detect the problem.Under sound playback for default device it says no playback deviceThat's it, Adam.

Are you using on-motherboard sound, or do you have a separate sound card?

If the sound is on board, maybe you can get the drivers from the CD that came with the motherboard or computer.  If it's a separate card, you should be able to get the drivers from the manufacturer.

Not to sure about that one I have an EMachine so I think it may be on the mother boardDo you have any kind of recovery or other CD's that came with the E-Machine?

(If the lime green audio plug in is up near the other ports, like USB, parallel ports, and ethernet ports, it's most likely on-board sound.  If you don't have discs, there's probably another way to get the drivers.)The only discs that I no of are the 4 restore discs that came with itOkay, now I have to be careful not to get you into trouble, here.

Do the recovery disks specify anything about motherboard or drivers?

I'm checking the E-machines website (or you can do this yourself).  It wants to know the series and model of your computer (which I assume is a desktop.)Should I throw the disks in and check if they say anything about the motherboard or driversGive that a try, Adam...see what's on the disks, if you can.

Solve : USB root/file?

Answer»

I am trying to update my copiers firmware using a USB stick but don't exactly understand what the directions are saying. Maybe someone can help..First , from the manufacturer website, I am supposed to download the program loader in the root of the USB. I understand that part. Then I'm supposed to load the new firmware of my specific model in a sub folder.  That's where I need help. The root program is called mentsu.02 and the file I'm supposed to load is 4520 series..I'm not sure how to procede..thanks You did not say which copier. Makes a difference.
Give a link to the instructions. The sub folder would be the name or model of your copier. To be sure, let someone here read the instructions.

Also, it would had been better to be more specific in the title.
Like:
"Copier firmware upgrade via USB problem."
If that describes the problem. Those CERTAINLY sound like strange instructions for installing a printer...

More info... Quote from: patio on March 27, 2011, 07:06:50 AM

You open the USB stick in Windows Explorer and place program loader in the root folder, that is, the uppermost folder of the drive. If the drive letter was E: (just an example) then the root folder would be E:\ and then you make a new folder in the root folder for example E:\Newfolder\ and put the new firmware file in that new subfolder. It might be crucial to give this subfolder a correct name but without more information we cannot really say. If you give a link to the instructions we can take a look and see if we can help further. These devices aren't cheap and you don't want to brick it, do you? Personally, if my EMPLOYER was leasing one of these on a contract, or if it was my own property, I would get a service rep to do it. If anything WENT wrong it would be their fault, then, not mine.

Solve : panasonic toughbook cf-c1 lost password?

Answer»

hi there ive got a panasonic TOUGHBOOK cf-c1 with intel i5 vpro, WINDOWS 7 professional installed. I have forgot the password at start up, i have tried everywhere for some help/advice. This isnt a normal windows password, its a password before even bios on these machines. can anyone please help me? You will need to take it to a Panasonic service center and be prepared to show proof of ownership.....
i have been in touch with panasonic and they said it will cost 90 pounds to sort. Thats ridiculous.Yep...Is that the only way it could be bypassed? if so then thanks anyway buddy.Unfortunately yes...

I have seen Panasonic Toughbooks. These notebooks are tough in every way, including tough to steal. They have a very special BIOS with something called "Computrace theft protection agent". They are often used by businesses where asset and data protection is vital. You would have known about this when you bought it, or could have easily found out by reading the user guide. Opening up a toughened notebook, removing the soldered BIOS and the onboard protection, replacing  and reassembling is not a trivial task. The security of the data on the machine and the traceability of the machine if it gets stolen is something that you paid for when you bought the machine. "Forgot laptop bios password" is quite a common QUESTION on here, and it is pretty obvious why we can't (read "won't") help.

Solve : I need help buying a new computer?

Answer»

Hi everyone.
I would like to by a new computer.
My current  computer is  P4 2.8 Ghz with 2 gigs or ram. I have 2 500 gig hard drives.
What I want to accomplish: surfing the web, scanning photos, a little video editing, burning cds. I have an Epson Perfection V500 photo scanner that I would like to continue using, with my current set up, I can't scan at the HIGHEST res the scanner has because the images are too large to handle.
I can pick out the dress up stuff I want (card reader, hdmi video, etc) but I have no idea what speed and model processor would be best and how much memory. I don't want to build it myself.

Thanks for looking. And double thanks for any suggestions.Best place to start is with a budget...you did not mention that...Thanks patio.
Yes, that would be nice. $1000 for the box, I don't really need a monitor or any peripherals. Quote

What? Your old P4 can not handle large images? I don't believe it. Here there is a old P4 2.8 Ghz that does just fine. It  can scan anything that fits on the scanner bed at any resolution the scanner can do.
Do you need a new computer?
-OR-
Do you crave a new computer?

In the USA thee are a few Wal-Mart stores that sell computers.

OR, on the north end of the pond...

It is sooo hard to choose!
Thanks Geek-9pm.
The P4 can, but my motherboard won't accept but the 2 gigs of ram. I always buy 8 1/2" by 11" photos then scan them at the highest resolution the scanner will accept. I'm assuming the scanner software is recognizing the maximum size my equipment will handle. The highest res I have been able to scan so far is 1600 by 1600. And that was a smaller photo. I usually use tif format, because that is what I ahve always used. I know it isn't the smallest or the best, but it works with the software I like to use for printing, etc.And what will you do with your old computer?
I have two Dell Dimension 3000 models. One has 786M the other 1280M of RAM. Neither has ever used up the entire memory even while doing 3d rendering. Perhaps what also matters is that I have Debian, OpenBSD, and FreeBSD installed on them.

Why not use another format and then convert to tiff?

You can weed out most of the electronics department of WalMart, BestBuy, etc. They are there to sell a product and few have any idea of how one works.

Speed and processor type won't matter if you're running a lot of programs.

HDMI should be on the graphics card. Card reader doesn't really matter. You can modify the case and attach another to an internal usb to motherboard connector.

Surfing the web isn't going to be fun if the system you use and the browser you choose to use are eating up cpu cycles, RAM, and paging files constantly. There's little here that makes any sense ... Quote from: patio on March 18, 2011, 06:52:32 PM

Buying a new computer when your old one is still efficient. The problem is in the OS design and requirements. The same applies for the programs. Change what is installed on the equipment not the equipment.

The same thing said two different ways. Communication must be difficult for you.

Do you really need a translation for this statement. Yes? Okay. use a format that requires less memory. Transfer that to your computer. Use a conversion program to change it to tiff.

HDMI connectors are on the graphics card. Is the system without a card reader? Well, does it have a free bay? If so, pop out the shield, place another card reader in it, and connect it internally.  You must pay the bills of your local computer shops' employees.

Yes. Maybe the OP will clarify why he thinks his old PC can not handle large images.
Aat home I edit images up to 3000 by 4000 and can print them on my color printer with quality close to a photograph. The issue is the paper quantity, not the limit of the PC. My scanner will do 600 DPI, which is very close to photograph quality. And PC speed, monitor, CPU and  RAM and HD are never an issue. Unless you do it for commercial use, in which case you would not want a PC anyway. Go buy a commercial thing from Kodak.
Maybe he just wants a new PC. For whatever reason. Quote

Maybe he just wants a new PC. For whatever reason.
Not particularly. What I want is a computer that will handle my scanner's top resolution. I am satisfied with the printer output that I have. I want to scan at higher resolutions to save the very best copy of the image possible. Some of the photos I want to scan are 70 years old or older. I want digital copies that are as hi-res as possible. By possible I mean at the top end of my current scanner. If it was a matter of just wanting or "craving" a new computer, I would already have it. I guess my real question should be " what processor & how much memory do I need to handle a scan to .tif of an 8 1/2" by 11" 6400 dpi.
It would also be nice if it would do it as fast as the scanner will scan.
The reason I started using .tif is because it is a "lossless" format. Quote from: okietool on March 22, 2011, 04:39:46 PM

1.  WinXP-32bit can use no more than about 3.0GB RAM.
2.  If the application needs more than available RAM, it will use Virtual Memory.  You may have to allocate more virtual memory to scan at that size & resolution.
Quote
.tif of an 8 1/2" by 11" 6400 dpi

54,400x70,400 pixels, at 24 bpp would be 11,489,280,000 bytes (approx 11GB). Scanners to the best of my understanding don't compress any of the data before they send it to the computer; and even if they did it would just be expanded anyway. you can't work with compressed data directly, so the format/compression used is only relevant to the resulting filesize, not to the possible resolution and color depth,

Really though this isn't a case of unsufficient physical memory anyway. Most of that data would be swapped to virtual memory anyway. Sounds more like a hard-set limitation set by the software, possibly unrelated to memory configuration; although if the pagefile/swap settings were manually changed from system managed, and the software was actually doing calculations on the fly to determine how big of an image to process (which I personally doubt for a number of reasons) then it could be deciding that the user cannot scan a super huge image.

It may be a good idea to try another piece of software that supports acquisition from a scanner.

Do You Really Need All That Resolution?
It seems even the scanner makers are now caught up in the more-is-better routine. A few years ago 300dpi 16-shade grey was an incredible scanner, to-day it seems if you dont have a 600dpi 24-bit scanner youll likely to get drummed out of the local DTP users club. But do you really need 600dpi?

Solve : New graphics card causing problems?

Answer»

Hi,

My sister has a Dell precision workstation 450, her current setup doesn't allow her to  play the sims 3 so she asked me to upgrade it.

It had a Matrox 908-07 Rev A graphics card in it but it doesn't support her game (this was in one of the PCI slots). I bought a PNY GeForce 6200 AGP card, removed the old card and fitted the new one. The SYSTEM turned on but there was no display on the monitor - I checked connections SEVERAL times and couldn't find any issues.

However, I've since taken out the new card and replaced the old one to see if I could find a solution and I'm getting the same problem - no display. Tried it with two monitors and with the card in 2 slots.

What can I do? I haven't got a clue where to go from here - it still starts booting up and the keyboard light comes on with the old graphics carde in but no display. (Keyboard light doesn't come on with the new card - don't know if that helps).

Any ideas?

Really appreciate any HELP you can give.

LewisIs there an onboard graphics card that it is booting to first? If it doesn't...

it is possible you knocked SOMETHING loose during installation, reseat the RAM sticks and CHECK all connections from the PSU to the Motherboard. There's no onboard graphics, going over to have another look today, will check connections from psu to motherboard - thanks kurtiskain.

Anything else that could help solve the problem?

Will post when I've checked connections.

Solve : lap top touch pad?

Answer»

Hope this is the right place.  After 3 yrs the touch padon my lap top (Acer) has "stuck" & I CANNNOT move it.  As I have a wireless mouse I didn't bother with it, but now I need the USB port that the mouse is in for a flash drive.  Is this a big repair & where do I go?If you don't feel like getting the TOUCHPAD replaced you can get little unpowered USB hubs that would be OK for items like wireless mice / flash drives. This is quite a common way of adding USB connectivity to laptops.

They are not expensive at all.

All below are 4 port hubs

Designs range from conventional...

to, WELL, strange...

... and incorporating an illuminated mouse pad...

There are lots and lots of different styles and designs.

Just a toss to the wind, if you run the LAPTOP without the battery in does the touchpad work?It is also worth mentioning that most laptops incorporate some method for intentionally disabling the touchpad. My Acer netbook uses Fn [function button]+F7 to toggle the touchpad on and off, although yours may be different. Make sure this is not the cause of the problem.

None the less, you will find a USB hub to be useful.
